Fire in August left restaurant with damage

CHARLES – On Monday, crews from Assurance Cleaning and Restoration were doing a final scrubbing inside The Office Dining & Spirits in preparation for the restaurant’s reopening on Wednesday, a little more than a month after it was damaged in a fire on Aug. 27.

“We’re excited, after six weeks of rebuilding, to open back up to our customers,” owner Sean Williams said.

“They have been wonderful in encouraging us.”

The Office will reopen at 11 a.m. Wednesday for lunch.

The restaurant will have a new fall menu when it reopens, Williams said.

On Aug. 27, fire struck The Office, which is at 201 E. Main St. in downtown St. Charles.

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found smoke coming from the roof of the building.

When they went inside, firefighters found a fire above the ceiling in the kitchen area of the restaurant.

The fire was extinguished in an hour. The kitchen was destroyed in the fire, which also caused smoke and water damage throughout the restaurant.

“We had to rebuild the entire kitchen structure,” Williams said. “We had to clean the restaurant from top to bottom because of smoke and water damage, and had to replace the floors.”

The cause of the fire has

not been determined, although officials said it is not considered to be suspicious.

“The flames started on the oven and went up through the ventilation hood system,” Williams said.

The Office has been open since January 2011. Before that, McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub had occupied the space for 15 years, Williams said. The structure was built in the 1840s and was the location of St. Charles Office Supply for many years.

With the restaurant reopening, Williams said he

anticipates its popular outdoor patio will be open for a few more weeks before cold weather sets in. After that, the restaurant will put up a garden atrium to provide for outside dining.

The restaurant employs 61 people. Williams said he is pleased that all of the restaurant’s staff is returning. He said he is also grateful for the help that the city provided after the fire.

“We’re looking forward to being a vibrant part of downtown St. Charles once again,” he said.

Kaneville United church plans supper, bazaar

Demolition ahead Deli, imported goods for activity center store to open downtown

St. Charles resident Tony Scheufler plans to open The Bend General Store at 320 W. Main St. in St. Charles sometime in mid-October.

“You’re not going to find anything in the city like what we’ll have,” he said Monday in a phone interview. “It’s going to be a really amazing place.”

The business will have an old-world 1920s deli feel with traditional deli, hot and salad sandwiches on fresh bread delivered daily, according to

Scheufler’s written business plan. In addition to over-thecounter sales, Scheufler will have a box lunch program in place and delivery sales placed from online orders.

The majority of the revenues will come from imported products, such as meats, cheeses, oils, olives and salads that Scheufler will acquire from a specialty purveyor, according to his business plan.

Scheufler also applied for a liquor license so he can have packaged liquor sales and also

sell wine by the glass. The St. Charles City Council on Monday approved his liquor license application, 8-2. Fourth Ward aldermen Jim Martin and Jo Krieger continued their longstanding practice of voting no on liquor license requests.

The Bend General will focus on the lunch and after-work crowd during the week, but will then reopen from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays to only serve food – and not alcohol – to the nightlife crowd, Schlefer said.

The manager of the store, Jennifer Cook, also is a St. Charles resident and her family has an extensive background in the restaurant industry. Cook’s father, Mike Kaatz, managed the former Rex’s Cork and Fork in St. Charles for 20 years and then owned it for another 20 years after that, Scheufler said.

NORTH AURORA – Village trustees at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting moved ahead with the demolition of the North Aurora Activity Center.

Trustees in May decided the North Aurora Activity Center at 1 N. Lincolnway was not worth saving. The Activity Center has been closed since March 12 because of structural damage.

Kluber Architects and Engineers presented three different options for demolition. After debating the issue, trustees opted Monday for the cheapest option, which would involve removing the building for an estimated $475,773. The east and south parking lots would remain.

The cost includes asbestos abatement, removal of an underground fuel storage tank, removal of the dirt/sand playground on the south end of the property and keeping the parking area on the north end of the site.

A portion of the funding would come from the insurance money received for the village’s property loss – $68,763 – as well as funds from the closeout of the North Aurora Activity Center fund – $92,0002.

Other funds would come from reserves in the village’s capital projects fund.

As proposed, the North Aurora Activity Center would be demolished by February or March.

Batavia-based Kluber Architects and Engineers in a report had determined there are three sections of the building where the roof joists have failed because they were stressed beyond their maximum designed capacities.

“According to the report, the damage to the joists was caused by a combination of the

framing not being properly designed for dead and live loads [the building was constructed in the 1930s] and the high snowfall experienced this past season where cold temperatures did not allow for normal periodic melting,” Village Administrator Steve Bosco had said.

Adding supports to all of the joists in the affected areas as recommended by Kluber was estimated to cost $219,862, of which the village’s insurance company would provide $103,146 in loss contribution.

The village’s total out-ofpocket costs would be about $116,715, Bosco said.

Share and Care Learning Center, which was one of the main tenants in the North Aurora Activity Center, found a new permanent home in the former Rainbow Tile building at 12 John St. in North Aurora.

The North Aurora Activity Center originally served as North Aurora Grade School from 1933 to 1968.

The fight against breast cancer Geneva oncologist says attitude can affect patients’ ability to tolerate treatment

ENEVA – Dr. Perry Menini knows a lot of what he says in his initial contact with patients likely won’t be heard.

Although they might not show it on the outside, the oncologist said, people who learn they have cancer often go into panic mode and don’t really hear the rest of what he has to tell them.

So, Menini – who treats breast cancer patients at the Cadence Cancer Center on the Delnor Hospital campus – has learned he will have to repeat himself later.

That initial conversation is the beginning of a relationship that generally includes about six months of active treatment and – hopefully – a cancer-free outcome. While Menini sees about 15 new breast cancer patients each month, he said most survive the disease.

Breast cancer, he stressed, is not a death sentence.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer death rates had slowly increased for many years – about 0.4 percent a year from 1975 to 1990.

Because of improvements in treatment and early detection, death rates have decreased by 34 percent from 1990 to 2010, the society reported.

Last year, nearly 40,000 women and 410 men were expected to die from breast cancer, according to the organization. Conversely, the society reported, more than 2.9 million U.S. women with a history of breast cancer – including those still undergoing treatment – were alive Jan. 1, 2012.

He compared it to the role of a football coach. A coach doesn’t do any good by telling his team members that their opponent is really good and that they probably don’t have a shot at winning, he said.

Rather, he said, the coach has to get the team ready to go out and fight the fight.

He said he tells his patients this: “In the end, I want this to be a bad memory.”

He frequently sees his patients during their treatment and works to manage their side effects, he said. He said each meeting is an opportunity for him to infuse positive information.

A positive attitude can affect a patient’s ability to tolerate treatment, which may include chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Menini said.

The course of treatment can depend on their age, as pre- and post-menopausal women require different strategies, he said.

His patients range in age from the early 30s to 95, he

said, noting he is seeing more and more patients in their 40s.

There is no specific reason for that, he said, but the younger a patient is, the more aggressive the cancer usually is.

Those whose genes predispose them for developing breast cancer can be faced with the decision to have a bilateral mastectomy – a “bold move” that has become more acceptable since actress Angelina Jolie had the preventative surgery, Menini said.

Genetic testing is recommended at age 20 for those who have a first-degree relative – mother, father, sister – with breast cancer, he said.

Otherwise, he said, yearly mammograms are recom-

mended at age 40.

Relief and disbelief are common reactions among patients when Menini tells them they are cancer-free, he said.

“It’s emotional,” he said.

“It’s tearful.”

Patients and their families often will send Menini letters or cards thanking him for what he did for them, even if the patient didn’t survive, he said. Grandchildren, for example, have thanked him for giving them more Christmases with their grandparent.

“I don’t know if any medical specialty builds bonds like oncology does,” Menini said.

Strahl said she would have three samples used by other communities for trustees to consider at a workshop meeting.

CAMPTON HILLS – A Campton Hills village trustee has filed a police report against the village president, alleging Patsy Smith pushed him, according to a Campton Hills police report.

Al Lenkaitis Jr., 41, told police that on Aug. 14 he visited the Village Hall to speak with Smith, 58, about village-related business. Seeing that her office door was open, Lenkaitis reportedly tapped on the door, said a greeting and asked to meet with her.

Smith reportAl Lenkaitis edly said she Jr. was busy and that they could maybe meet the next day. Lenkaitis told police the interaction soon became Patsy Smith physical.

“I was standing in the doorway and she got up and came to the doorway,” he wrote in a sworn statement.

“At this point, she pushed me out of the office, using both hands on my shoulders.”

Smith reportedly then walked away to find a police officer.

Lenkaitis reported the incident Sept. 30. At that point, police reported, the trustee just wanted it documented.

Police spoke with Smith on Thursday. She reportedly gave the officer several documents that would explain what led up to the incident. An incident in June started “all this” between her and Lenkaitis, according to the police report.

“She went on to say that she was not denying that the incident on Aug. 14 happened,” states the report. “However, [she] told me that it began when Trustee Lenkaitis was blocking the door to her office.

He wanted to meet/speak with her, but she told him repeatedly she was busy and could not meet with him.”

Lenkaitis wouldn’t leave, so she had to force her way out of her office and wanted to find a police officer in the building for

help, she reportedly told police.

Reached by phone Monday, Smith reiterated much of what she told the police. She said Lenkaitis doesn’t respect her boundaries.

“It really bothers me he’s trying to turn this into something political,” she said, describing him as the instigator.

Lenkaitis said Monday night that he believed the village president was trying to avoid him so he went to her office personally because she would not schedule a time to meet with him.

“Her door was open, I stepped in and said, ‘Can I talk to you?’ I stood in the doorway and we talked for a little bit and she rushed out and pushed me out of the way.”

If the case were to proceed and charges were requested, it would have to be reviewed by the state’s attorney because it involves two public officials, police reported.

William was born July 19, 1939, in Chicago the son of William Joseph and Dorothy Regina (nee Steinke) Kraft. Bill was united in marriage to Jean Juricic August 20, 1960, in Chicago, IL. Bill was employed as a lithographer. His career first started at American Printers and Lithographers in Niles, he was later employed at Plastag in Elk Grove Village until his retirement. Bill and his wife have resided in St. Charles for the past 26 years. During his spare time he dabbled in coin collecting, but most of all he loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; three children, Debbie (Scot) Schaeffer of Decorah, IA, Bill (Janice) Kraft of Carmel, IN and Bob (Tricia) Kraft of South Elgin; nine grandchildren, Blaise, MacKenzie, and Brent Schaeffer, Nicole, Brittany, Caitlin, Tyler, Colin and Alyssa Kraft; and a brother, Albert (Loretta) Kraft.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his grandson, Zachary Schaeffer.

The crowd gathered at the Batavia Riverwalk for its boardwalk dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The boardwalk was newly reconstructed over two years with about $148,000 raised from 77 donors, and 2,600 volunteer hours spread out over 56 work days, according to the Batavia Parks Foundation.

“Please enjoy it and take care of it,” said Steve McKenna, the foundation’s president and boardwalk project manager, near the end of the event.

McKenna and his wife, Britta, were part of the initial construction of the Batavia Riverwalk and boardwalk in the 1990s. The couple once again joined forces when the boardwalk, located in the northwest part of the Riverwalk, was in need of improvements. Britta McKenna worked on fundraising and marketing for the project.

As word of the project spread, volunteers like Sarah Ryerson of Batavia stepped up to contribute both financially and physically. Ryerson previously has volunteered with the Kane County Forest Pre-

Elgin, Aurora firms among those who will pay Aquascape

ST. CHARLES – A series of settlements were recently reached in a lawsuit tied to the 2011 Aquascape roof collapse in St. Charles, according to court records.

The settlements, which were reached with eight different defendants in the lawsuit, total at least $259,000, according to the court records.

The settlement reached with Dubuque, Iowa-based Tricon Construction Group that was provided in court records did not specify a dollar amount.

Aquascape in 2013 filed a suit seeking $13 million in damages against various businesses involved in the construction of its green roof, a large section of which collapsed Feb. 13, 2011. No one was injured in the incident.

Murphy on Sept. 30 dismissed Tecza Environmental Group of Elgin from the suit after it paid a $30,000 settlement, according to court records.

Area Erectors of Rockford also was dismissed after paying $32,000.

Other settlements include $95,000 from Metallic Building Company of Houston, $32,000 from Applied Ecological Services Inc. of Brodhead, Wisconsin; $25,000 each from Dewberry Architects of Fairfax, Virginia, and Olsson Roofing of Aurora; and $20,000 from Senekekts of Monroe, Wisconsin.

Artisan Design Buildings Inc. is the main defendant and is still attached to the suit. Artisan intends to file a motion sometime before the case’s next court date to dismiss the lawsuit, confirmed Robert Martier, one of the attorneys representing Artisan, in an email on Monday.

Martier provided no further details on what the motion would contain.

The next status hearing in the case is Nov. 7, according to court records.

Some collectors search for pieces from a past era; some want pieces with a connection to a famous person or event.

Many collectors are furnishing a house or apartment and want antiques that are useful and well-priced. But younger collectors today seek useful things from the ‘50s era that are colorful, well-designed and in excellent condition. Telephones, electric fans, telephone insulators, large metal and wooden machinery, steel school lockers, and jewelry made from computer parts sell quickly at shows. At a recent Absolute Auctions & Realty online auction, two pink “Dada Babies,” figural speakers only 6 inches tall, sold for $3,277. Their bases are marked “Dada Baby Art by B & W [Bowers & Wilkins], Handmade by Blueroom Loudspeakers.”

Their modern shape and color may have attracted bidders, but many technology collectors must have wanted these rare speakers. Bowers & Wilkins is an audioequipment company founded in England in 1966 by John Bowers and Roy Wilkins, who wanted to make better sound speakers. They met an artist who thought music would sound better if played through speakers with rounded, not straight, edges and the company started making speakers in several abstract modern shapes. In 1996 B & W created its Blueroom Dada Babies. The wire for each speaker connected to the figure like an umbilical cord. The seated baby has a head that rotates to send the sound in several directions. Dada Babies originally came in five colors: blue, red, yellow, black or pink. Only a few still exist because half of the 100 speakers made in 1996 were lost in a fire. Examples are occasionally offered online or at live auctions. Are the justpurchased “babies” now exhibited on a living room table as works of art? Or are they on a shelf with other unusual well-designed pieces of technology? ***

A: Harris Lebus was a family-run business that became England’s largest furniture manufacturer in the 1890s.

Louis Lebus, a German immigrant, opened a furniture shop in London in about 1857. Sometime after 1879, when Louis died and his son, Harris, took over the business, the name of the company became Harris Lebus. It made quality furniture inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. During World War I, the company made airplanes, gliders, tent pins and other military equipment.

Furniture manufacturing resumed after the war. During World War II, production switched to munitions, and the factory was involved in a top secret government project. Two or three wooden tanks, exact replicas of Sherman tanks, were built. They were meant to be used as decoys to fool German bombers. Harris Lebus became a public company in 1947 and later made inexpensive furniture using chip board and other woods.

The stopper is the top of the hat. The only marking on the bottom is “Wade, England.” Can you give me any information about this decanter?

A: Most old cast-iron doorstops sold today were made from about 1890 to 1930. Many have been reproduced. The design for your coach and horses doorstop was patented by Charles Tuteur of Chicago in July 1930. Value depends on condition. Your doorstop usually sells for about $100 to $200. ***

A: Your decanter is called “The Don,” made for Sandeman port and sherry. The Don is holding a glass of wine, not a torch, and he’s wearing a black cape similar to those worn by Portuguese university students. The image first appeared on posters made for Sandeman by George Massiot Brown in 1928 and has been used in Sandeman ads and on bottle labels for many years.

The company claims it was “the very first iconic logo for a wine.” Sandeman was founded in London by George Sandeman in 1790 and still is in business. The Wade group of potteries was founded in Staffordshire, England, in 1810. The pottery still is in business, now as Wade Ceramics Ltd. of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Wade made your decanter in about 1960. Figural decanters of The Don were also made by Royal Doulton and Wedgwood. The value of your decanter is about $15. Bottles by

BATAVIA – With no public comment, Batavia School Board members on Monday unanimously approved the retirement of Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden, who made local and national headlines last year when he instructed his students that they had the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves before answering an in-class survey about emotional and at-risk behavior.

“We thank him for his 22 years of service,” said Steve Pearce, assistant superintendent of human resources for Batavia School District 101, during the meeting.

Dryden contacted District 101 officials Wednesday about wanting to retire. Wednesday was his last day with the district.

On Friday, he formally submitted his retirement letter, Pearce said.

The District 101 board voted in May 2013 to issue a written warning of improper conduct to Dryden for his actions.

Before the board issued the notice, then-Batavia School Superintendent Jack Barshinger docked Dryden a day’s pay.

Jon Gaspar was the sole board member to vote “no.”

The notice warned Dryden not to provide legal advice to students, among other things.

On Monday, Pearce said he could not discuss whether Dryden had broken any conditions of the warning.

Dryden was not at Monday’s meeting, and efforts to reach him have not been successful.

Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel said she was surprised by Dryden choosing to retire.

“We wish him well,” she said.

At the time, Dryden said his actions represented “a teachJohn Dryden able moment.”

“Reminding my students they had a Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves and asking them to think hard about how they answered questions on a survey on which they were identified and required to answer questions about whether they participated in criminal activity was neither inappropriate nor unprofessional,” Dryden stated in his reply to the school district.

Barshinger had said that students can’t incriminate themselves.

“The information is protected by the Illinois and federal student records act,” Barshinger said at the time.

“We won’t give it to law enforcement. That was never the intent.”

Barshinger had said students’ names were put on the surveys to help identify those students who need help.

All high school students were given a 34-question survey April 18 during their thirdblock classes that would evaluate their social-emotional perceptions.

“We put on our winter clothes and braved it,” Whiteside said.

Both of them donned mittens in an attempt to keep warm in the face of 40-degree temperatures.

This was the first year of the event, organized by the Elburn Community Emergency Response Team and the Illinois Council of Police, a union representing the Elburn Police Department’s patrol officers and sergeants.

Among other things, Paige learned how to perform CPR at the event.

“We’ve had fun. We just wish it was a little warmer,” Whiteside said.

“We have a relationship with our members to assist them in helping the community,” said Richard Bruno, staff representative for the Illinois Council of Police.

Among the vehicles on display at the expo was the Kane County Emergency Management Agency’s Mobile Command Center.

“It is basically an emergency center on wheels,” said Jake Murphy, a volunteer with the agency.

Among those taking a tour of the vehicle was Greg Loebbaka of Sugar Grove.

“It’s good to know that this kind of thing exists for our use,” he said.

Janelle McCornack of Elburn and her two children also toured the vehicle.

As an emergency medical services instructor, McCornack knows the importance of events like the Elburn Safety Expo.

“It is important for the kids to be prepared,” she said.

Residents Carl Dinwiddie, Carl Fischer and Dan Pepin have applied for the position.

Aldermen plan to interview the applicants during Joint Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday.

Dinwiddie, a frequent critic of government overspending,

has lived in the First Ward for 27 years.

Fischer has lived in Batavia since 2004, where he has coached in the Batavia Youth Football League and been involved in other community activities, such as volunteering at the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

Pepin moved to Batavia in 2012. He is a founding member of Keep Batavia Neighborhoods, which has voiced opposition to the proposed rezoning of land for an industrial park at Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass on the city’s east side.

In August, Sparks announced he was resigning from the City Council because he was moving to North Aurora. Sparks first was elected to the City Council in 2005.

Sparks’ term expires in April. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and the City Council will appoint someone to fill the seat until April.

The City Council is comprised of 14 aldermen, with two representing each of the seven wards in the city. A map of the city’s wards is at the city’s website, www.cityofbatavia.net.

Most libraries, municipal, and township offices in Kane County will accept registrations today, the release stated.

Grace-period registration is an extension of the period of time for a voter to register to vote or to update their registration information. Once registered, such voters will cast their ballot during grace period for the general election.

The period begins Wednes-

day and runs through Oct. 17.

Grace-period registration and voting will be available only in the Kane County Clerk’s Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building B, Geneva.

Five permanent early voting sites are the Kane County Clerk’s Office; Kane County Branch Court, 530 S. Randall Road, St. Charles; Carpentersville Fire Station No. 3, 5000 Sleepy Hollow Road, Carpentersville; Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove St., Elgin; and Elgin Township, 729 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin.

All five will offer extended grace-period registration and voting beginning Oct. 20 until 7 p.m. Nov. 4.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The purpose of a state constitution is to establish a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS. (a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused.

(7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused.

(8) (7) The right to be reasonably protected from the accused throughout the criminal justice process.

(9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction.

(10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request.

The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

Celebrating National Newspaper Week

By ROBERT M. WILLIAMS JR. What do you care most about in life?

Most of us would put family at, or near, the top of such a list. Friends would be there. So would our jobs or businesses, our livelihoods.

Our homes. Maybe our pets.

Our hobbies and pastimes.

That’s our world, our “sphere of influence.” Whatever happens to those who inhabit that place in our hearts and lives means something to us. We monitor. We respond.

We pay attention. We laugh.

We cry. We hurt. We rejoice.

We care. And that is what well-run newspapers do, too.

As I have traveled the nation this past year, it’s been reassuring to see so many dedicated men and women who see newspapering as so much more than a “job.”

Newspapering is a job in the same sense that being a father or mother is a “job.”

Parents are responsible for the well-being of their family. Good newspapers take on that role with the communities we serve.

Newspapers are vigilant in protecting our communities from destructive influences, both from without and within. Newspapers sound the alarm with swift, accurate and thorough coverage when sensitive issues arise.

We provide not just facts, but clearly labeled analysis stories that offer in-depth points – and counterpoints – to help everyone weigh matters with sufficient information.

Newspapers also serve as “points of pride” where communities celebrate individual and collective achievement, offering congratulations and joining in mass celebration.

providing clear, concise facts about tragic events, their causes and how they might be prevented from re-occurring.

When communities are sick or injured, newspapers bleed.

We share the pain and shed tears along with our readers.

If the newspaper I’ve described sounds like a living, breathing thing ... that’s because they are.

As long as parents take pride in the birth of a baby, a graduation, marriage, promotion or any number of life’s milestones, people will enjoy reading about them in their community newspaper.

As long as people care about who died in their community this week, how high their taxes may rise or who scored the winning touchdown at the high school football game – community newspapers will be alive.

As long as bulletin boards and refrigerator doors display cherished family memories, community newspapers will be alive.

John Donne said: “No man is an island.” Because we don’t live isolated lives, apart from everyone around us, newspapers are going to be here to help us celebrate, mourn and record life’s history as it happens. Newspapers are the “tie that binds” people together.

And in the words of that old hymn: “Blest be the tie that binds.” Thanks for reading your newspaper during National Newspaper Week.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PRESERVING HISTORICAL HERITAGE To the Editor: On behalf of the Camp Kane Heritage Foundation Board of Directors and volunteers, we want to thank everyone who was involved with the ribbon-cutting event for the Jones Law Office and the re-dedication ceremonies for Camp Kane on Sept. 20. It was truly a group and community effort.

Special thanks are due to the city of St. Charles (Mayor Ray Rogina, the entire City Council and certainly all staff).

We realize that not every municipality would step up as this administration in St. Charles has done to preserve and protect its heritage and history. Aggressive Vikings prevail in 3 Geneva’s Lanasa: ‘Our defense was on’

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Geneva girls volleyball team took its solid record to Aurora for an Upstate Eight Conference crossover matchup against Waubonsie Valley on Monday night.

The Vikings were able to escape in three sets, winning sets one and three with scores of 25-20 and 25-23. The Warriors refused to back down on their home court, however, forcing a decisive set with a 26-24 victory in set two.

The Vikings played solid team defense and had great passing, which led to easy points in set one. Geneva senior Kelsey Wicinski had 17 digs on the night and was closely followed by Megan Cameron, who added 13 digs and 16 assists. The Warriors’ errors piled up and they were unable to close the point gap down the stretch.

“We were definitely in system with our passing,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “We were also serving aggressively to keep them out of system, which makes it nice, because then they’re giving us a lot more free balls.”

The first set was textbook execution for Geneva, but Waubonsie regrouped and was able to cut down on its errors and run out to a 20-16 lead on Geneva in set two.

After a Geneva timeout, the Vikings strung four points together to tie the score at 20. Warriors senior Becky Breuer converted a crucial tip kill to bring Waubonsie back on top, 25-24. The Warriors captured the second set on the next point off a Geneva hitting error.

“I felt like we had a lot of great defensive ups and great long rallies and a lot of great blocks. It just was some moments where we weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be,” Waubonsie coach Kristen Didier said.

Set three was even until Geneva was able to get a point to tie the set at 18. The Vikings (17-4) didn’t trail after taking the lead, 19-18, and were able to put away the game on an Ally Barrett kill.

Barrett had 10 kills and two aces on the night.

“We had great chemistry,” Vikings sophomore Mikayla Lanasa said. “Our defense was on, our kill streak was on and we just did really well.”

Lanasa was a big part of the offense, dishing out 26 assists. She helped Grace Loberg lead Geneva with 13 kills and Kyley Thompson record 10 kills.

Waubonsie (16-8) played well in front of the net. Juniors Taylor Dunwell and Caroline Cordes both reached five blocks each. Dunwell also led the team with eight kills.

Senior Sydney Slevin had 17 digs, while fellow senior Lauren Hiller had 13 assists.

Geneva will return to UEC River play tonight against West Chicago.

George Spelius and Bud Selig share at least three things in common.

Both hail from Milwaukee, have presided over baseball teams nicknamed “Brewers” and are retiring at the end of 2014.

Spelius has served as Midwest League president for 28 years, or six more than Selig held his post as commissioner of Major League Baseball. Asked if there were any connection between their departures, Spelius used his familiar wit. That’s his autopilot whether he’s discussing his longtime position or Selig, a man he hardly knows.

“He found out that I was going to hang it up, so that’s why he decided to hang it up,” Spelius said. “But I didn’t get the millions that he was getting, but that’s OK.” Spelius leaves office with an abundance of a different kind of currency: respect from his peers and constituents.

“I’ve been in the central office for going on 23 years, so it’s been a pleasure to work with George,” Minor League Baseball president Pat O’Conner said. “He’s been very good for this league and very good for baseball, and he’s going to be missed.”

Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson, a Cougars infielder in 1998, has seen Spelius’ tenure from two angles.

“Quite a run for Mr. Spelius, huh?” Erickson said.

“He’s put in quite a bit of time.”

Turning more serious, if only for a moment, Spelius, 81, cites his age and longevity as the primary factors behind his move.

Those relationships routinely reassure Nutter as he works with the San Diego Padres, who recently extended their player-development contract with Fort Wayne through the 2016 season.

The TinCaps have served as the Padres’ Class-A, Midwest League affiliate since 1999.

“Partly we love that the affiliate’s so far away so that when fans come here locally, it’s all of our gear, and not necessarily everything with the Padres,” Nutter said.

Fort Wayne has ranked in the top three of the 16-team MWL in average attendance in each of the past six seasons.

The Cougars have flanked them throughout, even as the organization has aligned with three different teams in that span – the Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals and Cubs.

With the recent shuffling that saw the Cougars become an Arizona Diamondbacks farm team late last month, club brass could adopt a Nutter-esque rhetoric.

“We’re excited to get the ball rolling with Arizona,” Cougars owner Bob Froehlich said. “It’s going to be a great partnership, and I think our fans are going to enjoy it.”

has operated Beloit Floral Co., which sits across from the MWL office and has been in Nancy’s family since 1916.

Long a baseball lover, George Spelius played on a U.S. Army team in the late 1950s while serving in Japan.

He became a traveling salesman upon his return from duty, but adopted a more flowery career after meeting his wife.

With the then- eight-team MWL looking to expand years later, Spelius and four other investors joined forces to land a Beloit franchise that began play in 1982. The team initially was known as the Brewers – the same big league club Selig once served as owner.

Beloit switched its name to Snappers in the mid-1990s but never has left Pohlman Field, a quaint ballpark Spelius frequented more often when his travel was restricted late in his career.

The MWL expanded from 12 to 16 teams during Spelius’ run, and now includes clubs in seven states.

Spelius is leaving one flourishing operation to return to another one, it seems, at least part-time. As usual, he’s making the transition with a few zingers in hand.

“Once it was baseball, for the 28 years, I didn’t do as much in the flower shop as I did in the prior time,” Spelius said. “I’d tell everybody I’d just go over there and count the money for about five minutes and then leave.”

Jordan is a junior standout for the Lady Saints Swim Team. She is the team’s top 200 IM and 100 Backstroke swimmer and was a State Finalist in those two events last year.

St. Charles East’s Norris Stadium transformed from a sporadic road venue for Geneva to a biennial destination when the Vikings joined the Upstate Eight Conference River Division entering the 2010-11 school year.

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski, in the midst of his 16th season at the school, has been part of both eras, and developed a fondness for Norris from his first visit.

“I really didn’t follow St. Charles at all because they weren’t even in our division or [anything] like that,” Wicinski said. “Saw some papers on them every once in a while in the newspaper. I couldn’t believe the intensity of the fans of the game when I first showed up. I think that’s still out there. Whether we’ve won a few or they’ve won a few, it seems like that intensity is fairly high against St. Charles East.”

An appearance from the Wisconsin marching band – in the region for the Badgers’ Saturday visit to Northwestern – only augmented this week’s trip. The Wisconsin band performed alongside East’s band, delivering pregame, halftime and postgame shows around unbeaten Geneva’s 40-7 win.

“It definitely brought more energy to the game, I think, especially with us being on the road,” Vikings right tackle Loudon Vollbrecht said. “And we have a great fan base supporting us on the road, as well, so it’s always fun to get up for these games.”

It’s time to go squatchin’. Can you find Bigfoot? Spend an evening searching for this mysterious creature in the Hickory Knolls Natural Area. The St. Charles Park District will host Gone Squatchin’ from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 18 in the natural area at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Road.

According to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (www.bfro.net), these large apes are spotted mostly in forested regions with abundant protein sources, deer in particular. The Hickory Knolls Natural Area is a particularly good location for Bigfoot to take up residence.

To find him, you’ll need to be on the lookout for a large, hairy, bipedal non-human primate, according to the BFRO. Color of their hair ranges from black or dark through various shades of reddish-brown and gray to white.

According to the BFRO, those who spot a Sasquatch generally comment on their smooth, long and fluent stride. On a whole, the Sasquatch is a generally nocturnal species with the capability of making sounds like whistling, moans, howls, hoots, grunts, growls, roars and screams.

In addition to searching for this mystical creature, the event will also include a prairie maze, campfire, games and storytelling.

Admission at the gate is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents. Those threeyears-old and younger are admitted free.

I am an admitted “bed snob.” I make every bed in the house every day, just the way I want them done. It makes me crazy when my husband insists that the kids do it themselves.

Our kids have homework, daily chores they alternate (cleaning the kitchen after dinner, doing laundry, etc.), as well as what we call “Chore Day Sunday,” which is a family affair when everyone has a list of larger chores to complete.

Effects of psoriasis are not confined to the skin Dear Doctor K: My doctor thinks my arthritis and heart disease are connected to my psoriasis. Is this possible? I thought psoriasis was a skin condition.

Dear Reader: Psoriasis (pronounced so-RYE-uh-sis) is named for an ancient Greek word meaning an itchy or scaly condition.

It is classified as a skin disease, but psoriasis is the result of an immune system abnormality that can cause problems throughout the body.

With psoriasis, white blood cells of the immune system become overactive. They produce excess amounts of chemicals that trigger inflammation. The inflammation leads to abnormally rapid growth of cells in the skin’s outer layer. This causes plaques: raised, red patches covered with silvery scales on the elbows and knees – the classic sign of psoriasis. (I’ve put a photo of psoriasis plaques on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

But the effects of psoriasis are not always confined to the skin.

The disease also can cause inflammation throughout the body. This probably is the reason that people with psoriasis have higher rates of various diseases that also are associated with a constant state of inflammation. These include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and several types of cancer.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Nearly one-third of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiff, painful joints and other symptoms.

Several eye problems are more common with psoriasis, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and damage to the cornea.

When psoriasis involves only the skin, it often can be treated just by medicines applied to the skin. Very mild cases of psoriasis may improve with moisturizers and some sunlight. But most people need other treatments: • Ointments, gels or lotions.

The most common are corticosteroids, which come in varying strengths. They quickly reduce inflammation and control itching.

Long-term use of strong steroids can thin and damage skin.

• Phototherapy. This treatment uses carefully controlled exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps slow the growth of skin cells. UV light combined with medicines called psoralens often are more potent than just UV light (a treatment called PUVA).

• Systemic therapy. If your pso-

riasis has caused more than skin problems, this can have implications for the kind of treatment your doctor may recommend.

Treatments that fight inflammation in multiple parts of the body may be required. Medicines that do this include methotrexate, retinoids and cyclosporine.

Research in recent years has led to biologic agents that directly neutralize some of the body’s chemicals (called cytokines) that cause inflammation. They have proved very effective in severe psoriasis. Though they carry a risk of serious side effects, the benefits generally are greater than the risks.

Exercise and weight loss, which help fight inflammation, may help. Adopting other healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco and eating well, can help prevent health problems linked to psoriasis.

If it seems that I’m recommending a healthy lifestyle as the cure for every human ailment, that’s because it really is true: A healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of, and suffering from, many major illnesses.

Drinking trend is downward Dr. Wallace: I’m attending college this year and I’m concerned about all the drinking that takes place among college students. I’ve heard some wild stories about this and I’m wondering if it is really as bad as it sounds.

Are college kids really drinking more than ever, or not? – Stephanie, Tulsa, Oklahoma Dear Stephania: Fortunately, the drinking trend is downward, but it’s still a major headache for college administrators. When young people are away from home for the first time and think that “everybody’s doing it,” it becomes simply too much temptation to drink, and so they try it. This is a circumstance that never seems to change.

But some colleges have taken steps to reduce the temptation. For instance, one of the most positive and responsible steps taken in recent years was when some of the national fraternities and sororities decided to ban alcohol at their campus residences.

According to the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, which looked at data from more than 3,000 four-year colleges, when it comes to drinking, there seems to be no middle ground. The college community is split into two groups: Those who never or rarely drink and those who drink often, and to excess.

In a study conducted by the CORE Institute at Southern Illinois University, it was discovered that students with low grade-point averages consumed more than 11 drinks in a week, while students

Things are improving, but those students who want to risk ruining their college experience by overdrinking can still do so with very little trouble.

That applies to bridge partners. And for declarer, when the dummy comes down in a suit contract, it is so important that he start moving forward by counting his losers. Assuming his hand has at least as many trumps as the dummy, he looks at his own 13 cards and takes dummy’s high cards into account. Then, if the loser count is not too high, declarer should draw trumps as quickly as possible. But if the loser count is too high, declarer must work out how to eliminate the excess.

In this deal, how many losers does South have in four hearts, given that West leads the club queen? How should he plan the play?

The bidding was straightforward, North jumping to game with opening count when he found a 4-4 major-suit fit.

South starts with at least five losers: two spades, one heart or two, and two clubs. But he has discards coming on dummy’s diamonds.

Declarer takes the first trick with dummy’s club ace, plays a diamond to his ace, leads a heart to dummy’s ace, and shakes his club losers on the diamond kingqueen. Then he plays a spade to his ace and leads another spade.

Suppose West returns a club.

South trumps, ruffs a spade in the dummy, leads a trump to his king, and plays on spades to land an overtrick. West makes his trump winner whenever he likes.

Notice the commonplace concepts of discarding losers from hand and ruffing losers in the dummy.
