Wredling leaves lasting legacy in St. Charles

Those who knew the 101-year-old World War II veteran and former St. Charles School District 303 superintendent said he left such an indelible mark on the community that his legacy will endure despite his death Saturday.

“It will last for another century, for sure,” District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said. “His leadership built the foundation of excellence that we still have today.”

Born March 16, 1914, Wredling assumed leadership roles in education following his service in the United States Army Air Forces in the 1940s, according to a resolution by the Illinois House of Representatives in celebration of his 100th birthday.

He led District 303 from 1958 to 1972 – a period of rapid growth – and later became Wredling Middle School’s namesake.

Wredling not only celebrated his birthday with the students but also led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance on the first day of school – a tradition he continued this year.

A school newsletter dated Aug. 21 noted his visit, indicating Wredling was “all smiles and in good spirits” and many students had the opportunity to speak with him.

“How fortunate we are that, at 101 years old, Mr. Wredling is able to continue sharing his time with us!” the newsletter stated.

His contribution to the area wasn’t limited to the schools. He also was active in the Boy Scouts and the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club and was a charter member of St. Charles VFW Post 5036.

“John was there whenever anybody needed him,” he said, calling Wredling an “extraordinary” person. “He was everybody’s friend.”

In 1997, the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce honored Wredling with the prestigious Charlemagne Award for his continuing history of service. And, in 2014, the Downtown St. Charles Partnership invited him to act as the grand marshal for the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

However, the spotlight wasn’t his motivation, his longtime friend, Bert Eisenhour said.

“He did this without any expectation of big rewards,” Eisenhour said, describing Wredling as a “glowing example of what America’s all about.”

He noted Wredling wore a neck brace in recent years because of an illness he miraculously recovered from, given his age. During his recovery, Eisenhour said, Wredling would say how he looked forward to driving again.

“He was a positive thinker, definitely,” Eisenhour said, “not a pessimist at all.”

Schlomann expects the school district – and Wredling Middle School – will honor the late educator, but no plans were in place as of Monday.

Personally, Schlomann said, he will miss Wredling a lot. He said he keeps one of the red T-shirts commemorating Wredling’s 100th birthday next to his desk to remind himself about what’s important in the district – the foundation Wredling built.

“People recognized that the values he held were ones that built our community and will continue to represent our community for a long time,” Schlomann said.

‘Volley for the Cure’ at St. Charles North

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and you think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.”

It kind of sneaks up on you and before you know it you start considering what the options might be as you face those big Charlotte Berg retirement decisions. My children live out of state and I knew that I wanted to stay near my friends, church and my community activities so my search began. I already had some dear friends living at Oak Crest and after visiting decided that the on-site availability of health care, location and surroundings were the perfect fit for me. Now, I was faced with the dilemma of making the decision to actually move.

So, I called up Oak Crest with some pretty specific requests. I wanted an apartment on third floor, looking north, near my cousin. Feeling pretty confident that my requests would not be easily filled, I sat back and relaxed. Imagine my surprise when mere weeks later I received a call telling me that my every wish was granted. I moved in and have to tell you I couldn’t be happier. I enjoy my apartment; I love my neighbors and I can participate in any number of events and activities throughout the day. As my Oak Crest neighbors and I say, “Be careful what you wish for at Oak Crest, because they just might come true.”

ECC earns honor from IEMA

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Don Kauerauf of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency said he had one thought as he traveled Monday to Elgin Community College to present the school with an honor concerning emergency preparedness.

He could think of “nothing more than last week and the importance of being ready,” he said, referring to Thursday’s deadly shooting at a college campus in Oregon.

While the Ready to Respond Campus designation ECC earned won’t prevent the next event, Kauerauf said, it symbolizes the college’s commitment to safety and security.

“This is a tremendous honor,” he said.

The Ready to Respond Campus program aims to enhance campus safety through a comprehensive, community-based preparedness and response effort, including public safety,

campus administration, faculty and students.

It encompasses all types of emergencies, such as active shooter situations, hazardous spills on Randall Road and natural disasters, Kauerauf said. He noted it was created for those where “meeting the minimum isn’t good enough.”

The initiative was launched in 2014 after a pilot program in 2013. ECC is not only the first suburban campus to receive the designation but also the first college to get it that wasn’t involved in the pilot program.

“This is only the beginning,” ECC President David Sam said, adding he intends to talk with the campus police chief to ask about the police force’s needs.

Like anything of value, Deputy Chief Tami Haukedahl said, the task of completing the program’s rigorous campus safety criteria seemed daunting, but it helped ECC police identify their strengths and challenges.

“It was what we needed to do,” she said.

The process required more than 1,000 hours of work over 18 months, Haukedahl said.

She said talking with students and staff Monday morning reminded her why the campus

police officers do what they do.

“It’s for them,” she said.

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Radecki said he had received numerous phone calls from constituents, some reacting from an “extremely inflammatory” anonymous letter that was circulated to residents of the Crossings at Geneva, a senior living development near the Delnor Hospital campus.

Affordable housing, Radecki said, does not equate with the government buying housing for low-income individuals. But rather, individual developers would decide to build affordable housing for an income level

of $46,000, Radecki said.

Barbara Andersen, who lives in the Crossings, where two of five condominium buildings were built and sites for the other two were included in the map.

“I would respectfully ask that it be removed,” Andersen said. “I understand that won’t happen ... I am not opposed to affordable housing. I wish I had affordable housing.”

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said the map is a tool staff can provide to potential developers who call looking for multi-family zoning.

Don Ramsell, who owns a law firm in St. Charles, encouraged the aldermen to support what’s allowed in hundreds of other Illinois communities. He noted video gaming hasn’t changed the character of establishments in South Elgin.

“It’s the same people,” he said. “They’re just having another form of entertainment.”

Mayor: West Batavia Cemetery to expand

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The West Batavia Cemetery is expanding southward on land already owned by the city of Batavia, Mayor Jeff Schielke said Monday.

In his regular mayor’s report during the Batavia City Council meeting Monday, Schielke said he has received calls about markings and activity on the south end

of the west cemetery, 900 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

Work on the expansion began during the summer and will be completed in the spring, Schielke said.

“We’re getting some fairly significant interest in people wanting to buy lots there,” Schielke said after the meeting.

The latest phase of the west cemetery will include 689 additional grave sites, Schielke said. There cur-

rently are about 320 grave sites for sale in the west and east Batavia cemeteries, he said.

The city owns the land where the west cemetery is located down south to Merlo Street, Schielke said.

The city also owns the land where nearby baseball diamonds are located, but Schielke said he hopes it would be “many years” before that area is considered for a cemetery expansion.

ST. CHARLES – With nowhere to sit, people stood against the back wall of the City Council Chambers as St. Charles’ leaders Monday night listened to arguments for and against video gaming.

Aldermen nearly settled the issue two weeks ago but were evenly split on a motion that would have denied a proposed ordinance on the topic.

Tiebreaker Mayor Ray Rogina denied the motion to deny the ordinance, and the video gaming debate was sent back to committee.

First Ward Alderman Dan Stellato, who chairs the Government Operations Committee, recognized the issue is “very important” to both sides, which is why video

gaming was the sole item on the agenda.

Aldermen heard from business owners, city residents and those from unincorporated St. Charles.

Guy and Elizabeth Bellaver said they previously were silent on the topic because they thought it was “inconceivable” the City Council would approve video gaming. Elizabeth Bellaver said the city has “worked so hard” to address the behaviors associated with excessive drinking and asked the aldermen who really benefits from video gaming.

Resident Robert Brown presented aldermen with a petition against video gaming that was signed by various residents, including parents, churchgoers and civic club members.

Local author seeks to empower readers

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – For years, Leslie Sann wanted to write a book. When the Elburn resident did just that, she started it with a breakthrough moment she experienced years ago.

Sann’s book – “Life Happens. What Are You Going to Do About It?” – offers 44 short chapters meant to inspire readers to make life-changing Leslie Sann decisions and accomplish more than they perhaps might have thought possible. In her introduction, she invites people to check out chapter names, read the book randomly and “do it the way you want.”

But she requests readers start with the first chapter, which includes a life experience that had a significant impact on Sann. It was a moment Sann wrote that she realized she could be powerful, and the plan is the book can inspire readers to feel that way, too.

“It’s all about waking people up to the fact that they have a choice,” Sann said.

Those who want to meet the author can do so at a workshop and book signing set for 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Heritage Prairie Farm, 2N308 Brundige Road, Elburn. Books will be for sale.

A grand opening will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday for The Wine Bar at the jewelry store, at 147 S. Randall Road in Batavia, according to a news release.

Half-price wine, appetizers from Gaetano’s Batavia, music, raffles and more will be part of the event, the release stated.

The idea of a wine bar inside a jewelry store came to owners Rob and Karen Hollis because they have hosted special events at K.Hollis Jewelers for years and felt adding a wine bar fit perfectly with their vision for the kind of shopping experience they want to provide for their customers, according to the release.

“Creating a warm and welcoming place where our customers feel at home has been a core principle for us from the beginning,” Rob Hollis wrote in the release “With over 4,000 square feet of space, we became a comfortable and unique place for networking groups, clubs and nonprofit organizations to gather.”

Hollis asked city of Batavia officials to consider creating a new liquor license classification that would allow the business to serve wine at a retail location. KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – A St. Charles woman was charged with three counts of felony forgery after police said she used phony $20 bills with the same partial serial numbers and the backs printed upside down, according to Geneva police reports.

Shannon C. Smith, 28, of the 1900 block of Wessel Court, St. Charles, was charged Aug. 28 when she Shannon went to C. Smith Walgreens at 2100 W. State St., Geneva, to pick up a prescription. Smith also was held on an outstanding warrant from Ogle County on charges she was driving while her license was revoked.

According to police reports, Smith used counterfeit $20 bills to buy items from Walgreens on July 16 and July 18. On July 20, Smith used a counterfeit $20 bill to buy an iced coffee at 7-Eleven, 1705 E. Main St., St. Charles, but the clerk realized it was a fake and confiscated it, according to police reports.

The felony charges each have a penalty of one to three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. She is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Owen F. Lang, age 77, of Geneva, passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva surrounded by his family.

He was born Aug. 26, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Owen and Carmilla (Fabbio) Lang.

Owen worked many years for AT&T and was a long time member of the American Legion Post 75 in Geneva. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corp. He loved to travel to many parts of the world. He enjoyed trains and was an avid stamp and coin collector.

His favorite pastime however, was spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed.

Owen is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Dolores; children, Michael (Laury) of Montgomery and Lisa of Geneva; grandchildren, Amber, Michael, and Christopher; dog, Benji; and many other dear relatives and friends.

Handicap parking will be posted on North Fifth Street, North Forth Street and North Riverside Avenue, according to the release. Motorists are encouraged to check for signs before parking. Handicap parking areas will be strictly enforced with a $250 fine, the release states.

City police and emergency management personnel will provide pedestrian assistance and traffic control at key intersections, according to the release.

“Motorists should expect delays and are reminded to use caution due to the increased amount of pedestrian traffic,” the release states. “Please do not drive distracted.”

Don’t read too much into Clinton’s ‘SNL’ sketch

By PHILIP BUMP The Washington Post The first thing worth pointing out about Hillary Clinton on “Saturday Night Live” is that she is a decent actor. Jimmy Fallon, who was on the show for seven seasons, would find something he did at a funeral funny. But Clinton, the amateur, delivered her lines cleanly and with a straight face and good timing. Yes, she read the cue cards, but then Fallon did that, too. Clinton’s Donald Trump impression wasn’t quite as good as Fallon’s, but it was decent.

Secondly, we have to point out the political issues that made the cut. We’ll have to wait for the eventual Rolling Stone article or cast tell-all to know how the script for the bit evolved – with Kate

McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton chatting up Hillary Clinton’s Val the Empathetic Bartender. But Clinton got to make a few points that probably pleased her campaign’s communications team.

First, Clinton – as the bartender Val – joked about opposing the Keystone XL pipeline, something that is a recent addition to her political repertoire.

Later, Clinton offered a bit of a mea culpa for another issue on which she was later than her party’s base, supporting gay marriage. Beyond the cameo from Darrell Hammond as Bill Clinton, this was one of the best moments, with McKinnon (as Clinton) admitting that she could have shown her support for it earlier.

We probably don’t need to dive too deep into this,

do we? Clinton is getting hammered among self-identified liberal voters, folks who are by far the most likely to demand opposition to Keystone. The gay marriage bit seemed almost like “SNL” rapping her knuckles on behalf of frustrated Democrats more than anything.

The third topic that was covered was unstated and overarching: that Clinton is approachable and appealing.

That’s the whole point of the thing, of course, the point of her appearing on live television at midnight (with the full understanding that the critical audience will watch it streaming the next day).

But the bit couldn’t help but point it out explicitly, as when McKinnon (as Clinton) told Clinton (as Val) that she was “easy to talk to,” prompting Clinton (as Val)

to say, “That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that.”

The conceit of the bit – which, you’ve seen by now, I assume – is that McKinnon (as Clinton) is only imagining the conversation with Clinton (as Val). Cecily Strong, playing Huma Abedin, enters after a brief (bad) song interlude to point out that there is no “Val.” “No,” McKinnon replies. “She was real. And smart, and really nice in person.”

The most important point to make here, though, is probably that this appearance will be included for years in remembrances of the 2016 election. But, by itself, it will not tilt the scales in one direction or the other.

We’ll be the first to admit that political writers read too much into these things.

It was an amusing effort in

which Clinton performed well and landed a few talking points. As far as political appearances go, it was about as good as you can get. (Except the singing part.)

As soon as everything was over, strong performance in-hand, Clinton had to return to the grim drudgery of the normal campaign trail, feigning enthusiasm for terrible things because it is demanded of her. But, she had a job to do and she did it.

She walked out on stage and delivered her line.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Miley Cyrus!”

It was her least authentic moment of the night.

A figurative mulligan awaits several Kane County Chronicle-area boys and girls golfers as IHSA regionals approach this week.

Today’s Class 3A Oswego boys regional at Blackberry Oaks at Bristol comes at the same venue Batavia and Marmion played last fall. Ditto for Burlington Central at today’s 2A Genoa-Kingston

boys regional at Marengo Ridge.

On Wednesday, the Batavia, Burlington Central, Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North girls teams will compete at the AA Burlington Central Regional at Sycamore Golf Club, mirroring the first stop of their respective 2014 postseason paths.

At least the host schools changed for the boys regional at Marengo Ridge this time around.

Although many golfers discuss the enjoyment of touring different suburban golf courses before traveling downstate for their respective state meets, athletes ultimately respect routines.

St. Charles North girls standout Gianna Furrie, a junior, was the medalist at Sycamore last season, carding a 70. At Blackberry Oaks, Batavia senior Nick Robin-

son tied for the top individual spot with a 79 before losing in a playoff on an incredibly windy day.

“It’s pretty straightforward,” Robinson said. “I mean, there’s not too many long, hard holes out there. So just keep the ball in play, which is what I usually do, and make some putts. You can get a good score out there.

“It’s playing your game and staying within yourself.”

The Geneva girls know the other half of the equation, having finished fourth as a team in its 2014 regional by one stroke. The top three teams advance to sectionals.

“That is really cool that it’s not just one year,” Vikings senior Reilly Krohe said. “We can actually bring it back and do well again.”

Hughes incorporation: All hail Hughes Creek.

The Elburn course, the home of Kaneland boys golf, will host a Class 2A regional today for the first time under 11th-year Knights coach Mark Meyer.

“Typically, we get passed over for courses that have driving ranges, but we’re lucky enough to be able to host this year despite not having a range,” Meyer said.

“It should get the guys very excited. I know many of them already are pumped up to be playing a regional on their home course.”

Kaneland finished fourth at last year’s Mendota Regional, one stroke behind Aurora Central Catholic, which earned the final sectional qualifying spot.

NOTEWORTHY Vikings vow to start faster

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski eventually smiled and joked with a waiting group of players after Friday’s 2726 homecoming victory against St. Charles East.

His temperament was more serious, however, in assessing the win that sent the Vikings to 6-0.

“We were a little tight to begin,” Wicinski said. “We’ve got to start off better.”

East struck early behind its triple-option offense, taking more than a minute to cover 76 yards in three plays on the opening drive. Freshman Justin Jett punctuated the possession with his first touchdown run of a breakthrough night.

“He’s a freshman that’s just been playing real well,” Saints coach Bryce Farquhar said. “He’s a big, physical kid that’s done really well for us so far.”

Geneva is the only remaining unbeaten team in the Kane County Chronicle coverage area, although longtime rival Batavia also is unblemished in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. The Vikings host the Bulldogs in Week 8.

“We’re just happy to be here right

now,” Geneva senior left tackle Matt Pawlak said. “We’re happy that we have this record, but we don’t want to say what we are right now.”

Comparisons to state title team for Batavia

You could tell there was disappointment after Batavia’s 34-14 loss to Naperville Central Friday night, especially from leaders like Canaan Coffey. But the senior receiver has been through this before and knows that the program and chemistry this team has trumps any sort of down moment.

“The [2013 Batavia] team that won state, they lost in Week 2,” Coffey said.

“But they got stronger from it and built on it and got stronger as a team, and I think that’s what we’re going to do.

We’re a resilient team, and this feeling will definitely prove that we’re a quality team and can come back from something like this.”

There isn’t a possible scenario heading into a game undefeated where a loss seemed like a good thing. But now that Batavia has has experienced it, there seems to be less pressure on the Bulldogs.

In a game that meant something, but

at the same time very little because it did not affect the UEC River race, Batavia still has its mind set on a conference championship, and much more.

“Being undefeated going into the playoffs is kind of scary,” Bulldogs quarterback Kyle Niemiec said. “It’s not a good thing to lose, ever really, but we know what it feels like and would much rather have the first loss come now instead of in the playoffs and have everything be over just like that.”

The game, obviously, meant something to both teams, but if Batavia was going to lose a regular-season game, it likely would have chosen this game, against a tough, nonconference, Class 8A opponent with a fantastic defense, that still keeps the Bulldogs’ goals intact.

Should the Bulldogs respond well, and take care of business with Elgin this week, a date with Geneva in Week 8 will be for the UEC River title. Should Geneva beat UEC crossover foe Glenbard East this week, the Vikings will come into that matchup undefeated.

We want to look at the wind or bad weather as a twist. It’s a unique challenge for us.”

A harder swing into the wind won’t likely result in a shot that travels farther.

Instead, it opens up the possibilities of a higher spin rate, which could adversely effect a shot already influenced by the wind.

“The old saying in golf is, ‘When it’s breezy, swing easy,’ ” Meyer said. “This helps you keep from overswinging and also helps reduce the spin you put on the ball.

A faster swing could impart more spin.”

Still, it comes down to shooting a lower score than a competitor. The weather conditions are something everyone in a tournament will face. The approach to them will dictate the result.

“Our team feels that the worse the weather gets, the better chances we have,” Baresel said. “We have to stay energized by it. The weather is what it is. It’s up to us to still put up a good score.”

Over the fall and winter.

Nocek will sneak in a round if a nice day emerges. But, he’ll mostly spend time at a nearby golf dome and focus on his swing rather than shot shape.

Until the calendar turns to March; by then, he’s got to satisfy a craving.

“I’m dying to get back on the course by March,” Nocek said. “Once spring rolls around, I want to be out there everyday again.”

There’s no official date to start golf season, either.

“I feel I ran fairly well for it being a new course,” Altmayer said.

She said there was a lot of uphill work in the first mile of the new route.

“It was a big adjustment,” Altmayer said.

Batavia won the girls varsity meet, placing four runners in the top 15. Emma Stephens, a sophomore, finished fourth for the Bulldogs, covering the course in 17:51. Other point-scorers for Batavia were: Dakota Roman (11th in 18:32), Daphne Kolody (12th in 18:36),

had four runners finish in the top 14 to create a close battle.

Michael Gerkin, a senior, led the Saints’ runners, finishing eighth in 15:55.

“It was a new course, and I thought we ran it very well,” Saints coach Chris Bosworth said. “We ran at a pretty solid pace from [runners] one through six.”

Point-scorers for East, in addition to Gerkin, were: Mark Sciurba (ninth in 15:56), Jack Rzepecki (11th in 16:01), Brett Izzo (14th in 16:06) and Anthony Zilla (34th in 16:20).

Bosworth said the team’s focus now turns to the Oct. 17 Upstate Eight Conference meet.

With a week off before the conference meet, Bosworth is confident his squad will be ready.

“We will be where we want to be,” Bosworth said. “I am comfortable with where we are right now.”

Marmion took third in the boys varsity meet, paced by sophomore Michael Ronzone (fifth in 15:46) and senior Andrew Burroughs (sixth in 15:48).

ST. CHARLES – Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer was happy capturing first Saturday in the girls varsity division at the St. Charles North cross country invitational at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve but was more excited with her team’s effort.

The Vikings finished fourth in the meet behind Batavia, Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central.

“That’s awesome. That is so great,” Altmayer responded when hearing the Vikings finished fourth. “We’ve had a lot of injuries, and people are coming back now.”

The Geneva senior said the squad might be hitting its stride at just the right time.

“It proves we are working and getting stronger. We are getting our top seven lined up,” she said. “We will have a presence at the top.”

Marygrace Golden (14th in 18:41) and Anna Marie Malay (28th in 19:21).

The Bulldogs finished 30 points ahead of second-place finisher Lyons Township.

“I am OK with my run,” Stephens said. “I knew the time would be a little slower because it was a tougher course. I am pretty happy overall.”

The sophomore said the team win shows the squad is deep and works together.

“Our times were good. We all came in together; that helped a lot,” Stephens said. “I am happy with how we did.”

St. Charles North took 10th in the girls varsity race.

Other Kane County Chronicle individual top 10 finishers were: Audrey Ernst of St. Charles North, a sophomore, who finished seventh in 18:12, and Sophia McDonnell of Geneva, a freshman, who finished 10th in 18:32.

In the boys varsity race, St. Charles East finished second, nine points behind winner Sandburg. While Sandburg had the top two finishers, the Saints

Hawks maintain ‘high expectations’ after opening rout

By STEPHEN GORDON editorial@kcchronicle.com CAROL STREAM – If Sunday was any indication, the Fox Valley Hawks could see their season stretch well into March.

The Hawks, a combined high school hockey team made up of players from St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Geneva, Batavia and Kaneland, began their regular season Sunday at Carol Stream Ice Arena with a resounding 10-1 win against the Kankakee Irish to begin Illinois Suburban Hockey League (ISHL) play.

“It felt good to hit somebody else in a different color jersey for a change of pace,” said Hawks forward Jake Hummel, a Kaneland student.

“We had a lot of hard weeks of practice leading up to this, and it really paid off for us today. We were passing the puck good and controlled the pace of the game really well today, I thought.”

From the opening faceoff, the Hawks made sure the Irish would have a long afternoon. The Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead with 13:53 left in the opening period when Tyler Campise scored off a feed from fellow St. Charles East student Morgan York. More than two minutes later, another East player, forward Josh Gadow, made it 2-0 when he beat Kankakee netminder Kyle Gedenk (31 saves) from in close while the Hawks were on the power play.

The Hawks closed the scoring in the opening period when Hummel scored the first of his three goals on the afternoon with an unassisted goal with 2:24, left making it 3-0.

“I thought our passing game was awesome today,” Hummel said. “We knew where everyone was supposed to be out on the ice today. We were just comfortable. We have high expectations for ourselves this year. I think we are going to be pretty good

A four-goal outburst by the Hawks in the second period was led by Hummel, who scored twice in the period.

His second goal came at the 9:33 mark, and his final score came with 1:16 remaining.

The other two goals in the middle period came from Gadow and Jake Raymer (North).

Raymer’s goal came with just 49 seconds left in the period, making it 7-0.

The two teams entered the third period with the running clock kicking in the final 16 minutes of play.

“I think for us as a team, we have to continue to work on jelling as a team,” Raymer said. “We have to work as one unit. We did lose a lot of talent off of last year’s team.

There is still talent here, but it’s now spread out over four lines. We are going to rely on our fourth line this season to take the pressure off our top two lines.”

The Hawks got goals from Trevor Kurtzhals (North), Gio Pompilio (East) and Evan Anderson (East) to close the scoring in the third period.

The only thing Kankakee was playing for was to avoid getting shut out by the Hawks and goaltender Aaron Karkos, a Batavia student who made 11 saves. Karkos lost his shutout bid when Irish forward Jim Gorecki scored with 1:32 left.

Hannah Anderson is a Freshman running on the Varsity Girls Cross Country team. She has been the number 2 runner on Varsity. She is new to running, but works hard at practice everyday.

She has won awards at the Elgin Invite (19th place), Plainfield Invite (20th place) and Rockford (3rd place).

Josie had a scoring average of 38.4 for the month of September taking 1st place at the Belvidere Co-op triangular.

In addition, she took 1st place at Winnebago High School, the West Chicago Wildcat Open and also at Marengo High School. She finished second against Richmond High School and at the 14 team Elgin Country Club Invite

Tulip mania, a strange financial “bubble” in Holland in the 1630s, made a tulip bulb cost up to 10 times the yearly income of a skilled craftsman, according to some writers. So the flowers became a status symbol, and the very rich or royal bought huge flower containers to grow or show the flowers. Tulip mania ended in 1637, but the flowers remained popular. A vase that is still called a “tulipiere” has numerous holes or short tubes, which hold a flower or plant. Most sources today think these vases were used for cut flowers, but they originally were used to force tulip, hyacinth or crocus bulbs to grow and bloom in the house. Collectors can find rare early Dutch tulip vases, 19th-century Wedgwood or Staffordshire vases, or Continental and American examples, all with multiple holes or tubes. A few are offered in current gift catalogs.

A: Joseph Bishop Van Sciver (1861-1943) was 21 years old when he started a small furniture business on in Camden, New Jersey, in 1881.

The company quickly expanded to larger facilities, and pieces made at Van Sciver’s plant were delivered by wagon throughout southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania. By 1900, more shops, storage facilities and showrooms were added and the company was selling inexpensive, well-made living room, bedroom and dining sets, and more costly reproductions, lamps, clocks, rugs and draperies.

Van Sciver was also involved in the Knickerbocker Lime Co. which supplied most of the concrete used to build the Ben Franklin Bridge, Philadelphia banks, the subway and more.

The 1926 catalog doesn’t specify what metal was used for the top, but it usually was aluminum or chromed or silver-plated metal. And isn’t it odd that a glass maker would produce a container for “illegal substances” in the middle of Prohibition (1920 through 1933)? This week, we are looking at captaincy during the bidding. When one player has described his hand accurately, he typically leaves the final decision to his partner.

In today’s deal, after one spade – two spades, what should South do?

Opener usually either passes (with no game aspirations) or jumps to game (with a strong hand).

Sometimes, though, he is in the middle; game might or might not be good. Then opener makes a help-suit game-try, bidding a side suit – here, three diamonds. This asks partner in particular to look at his holdings in the bid suits.

With good holdings – high cards or shortage – he jumps to game. With bad holdings, he signs off in three spades. In this deal, although North has only six high-card points, he has great spade and diamond holdings – especially that fourth trump. So he should happily jump to game.

West starts the defense with his three top hearts. After South ruffs the third, how should he continue?

South’s 10 tricks should be five spades, two diamonds, one club and two diamond ruffs in the dummy.

Declarer draws one round of trumps from hand, plays a diamond to dummy’s king, leads the diamond 10 to his ace, ruffs a diamond with the spade eight, crosses back to hand with a spade, trumps his last diamond with the spade king, ruffs a heart, draws East’s third trump, and claims.

Make sure to eat and drink slowly – speed-eating makes you swallow more air.

A product called Beano may help metabolize difficult-to-digest complex carbohydrates when taken before meals.

Over-the-counter preparations containing the enzymes lipase, trypsin and amylase may reduce gassy emissions.

Activated charcoal absorbs gas and may help cut down on your gassiness. Occasional use is not harmful.

Pepto-Bismol may reduce the odor of your gas.

Don’t completely abandon the fruits I mentioned; they are healthful for you. A period of trial and error may help you identify the foods that lead to fewer problems with gas when you stop eating them.

Dr. Wallace: My father smokes more than two packs of cigarettes a day. I love him more than any human being on earth.

He’s a single parent and is doing a superb job of raising me (I’m 16) and my younger sister (she’s 13) and my younger brother (he’s 9). Our mother abandoned us six years ago, and is now married to someone else and living in another state. We have no contact with her.

I know you encourage all your readers to give up smoking, or better yet, never to start, but I’m asking you one huge favor. My sister and I worry my father could get lung cancer and die because of his smoking habit. We don’t want this to happen. We need and love him too much for that.

He never smokes in our house because he knows it is not good for us, but he smokes in our garage and that doesn’t help him.

Whenever we tell him we don’t want to lose him, he admits smoking can cause lung cancer, but he says he’s too young for it to happen to him. He’s only 43.

I remember you printed a letter a while ago

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace about a girl who said she lost her father to lung cancer because of his smoking habit, and he was only in his early 40s. Would it be possible for you to reprint that letter so we could frame it and hang it up where our dad could see it every day?

I’m hoping this could help him decide to quit his dangerous habit.

We are good kids and he is a wonderful father so we want to have him around for a very long time. – Nameless,

long to recover the letter you mentioned, and I hope your father will read it every day.

Maybe in a short time he will be able to give up his smoking habit and prolong his life so one day he will be as wonderful a grandfather as he is a father. The following letter is just for him: Dr. Wallace: Last Friday night, my father died at the age of 42. Daddy had asthma since he was a boy and it usually isn’t fatal unless the

person gets careless with his health.

Daddy started smoking at age 17, and although he wasn’t smoking when he died, the damage was already there – cancer. The doctors thought they might be able to operate on him, but then decided the cancer was too far advanced.

In a way, I am relieved.

Now I know Daddy isn’t suffering anymore.

But still, I feel cheated.

Daddy will not help celebrate my high school graduation.

He won’t give me away when I get married. My future children will never have the opportunity to know what a wonderful man their grandfather was.

Dear readers, if you smoke, please stop. If you don’t, please don’t start.

Parents, if you smoke, please think about my loss and give up the habit.

Dear Dr. K: All my adult life I’ve had a tendency to pass a lot of gas. It’s unpleasant for me and for others. What can I do about it?

Dear Reader: All human beings pass gas to some extent. That’s because all of us have gas (mostly swallowed air) in the digestive tract. Along with the air you swallow, the bacteria that live in your gut also produce gas – up to two quarts a day.

You may have noticed this air moves in your digestive tract.

You can feel it and you can sometimes hear it. It’s not really your stomach that is “growling”: It’s your gut gas gurgling.

Eventually the air you swallow and the gas your gut bacteria make need to be expelled to prevent painful stretching of the stomach and intestine.

There’s nothing you can do to prevent passing gas (flatulence) completely. But here are some tips to help you reduce the amount you pass.

In most people, gas-producing foods are responsible for much of a person’s flatulence. So the first step is to figure out which foods make you gassy and avoid them. Foods more likely to cause gas include: • beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and peas; • oat bran and other high-fiber foods; • carbonated beverages; • foods containing sorbitol (an artificial sweetener); • fructose, a natural sugar present in many fruits (including prunes, pears, grapes, dates and figs) and in many sweeteners; • lactulose, another natural sugar present in many fruits (including

Dear Abby: I have a friend whose 11-year-old grandson stays overnight with her sometimes on the weekends. She has only one bedroom, and I’m concerned because he still sleeps with her in the same bed.

I have mentioned it to her many times, and she says there is nothing wrong with it. I even purchased a nice air mattress, very easy to inflate, which she accepted but doesn’t use. I’m upset by this situation. I know she sometimes sleeps in revealing night clothes, although I don’t know if she does when her grandson is there.
