BOARDWALK OPENS Volunteers, donors honored for service at ceremony Blue Goose Market to host Harvest Homecoming event ST. CHARLES – Blue Goose Market of St. Charles will be hosting its inaugural Harvest Homecoming event.

It will serve as a fresh market and local gathering spot during St. Charles’ Scarecrow Fest weekend, which will be from Friday through Sunday.

Volunteers, donors praised at dedication Boardwalk complete after 2 years; about $148K raised

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – About 75 people Sunday were in downtown Batavia to mark the completion of a project built and funded by the city’s residents, businesses and organizations.

The crowd gathered at the Batavia Riverwalk for its boardwalk dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The boardwalk was newly reconstructed over two years with about $148,000 raised from 77 donors, and 2,600 volunteers hours spread out over 56 days, according to the Batavia Parks Foundation.

“Please enjoy it and take care of it,” said Steve McKenna, the foundation’s president and boardwalk project manager, near the end of the event.

McKenna and his wife, Britta, were part of the initial construction of the Batavia

Riverwalk and boardwalk in the 1990s. The couple once again joined forces when the boardwalk, located in the northwest part of the Riverwalk, was in need of improvements. Britta McKenna worked on fundraising and marketing for the project.

As word of the project spread, volunteers like Sarah Ryerson of Batavia stepped up to contribute both financially and physically. Ryerson has volunteered with the Kane County Forest Preserve and the St. Charles Park District, but she was looking for something to do in town that involved hands-on work outdoors.

“It’s just been wonderful to see the effort,” said Ryerson, who joined the project in 2013 and rarely missed any of the project’s Saturday volunteers shifts this year.

“I think it’s a wonderful thing,” she said of the boardwalk.”We raised our family here and I think Batavia is an exceptional community.”

Other Batavia residents such as Sharon Rudow are impressed by the boardwalk renovations. She used to walk her dog in the Riverwalk area years ago and on Sunday she walked a dog from the temporary Anderson Animal Shelter in Batavia on the boardwalk.

“It looks very nice,” Rudow said.

Three apply for Batavia City Council vacancy

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Three candidates have applied to fill a vacancy on the Batavia City Council after the recent resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks.

Residents Carl Dinwiddie, Carl Fischer and Dan Pepin have applied to fill the vacancy.

Aldermen plan to interview the applicants during a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday.

Dinwiddie, a frequent critic of government overspending,

has lived in the First Ward for 27 years.

Fischer has lived in Batavia since 2004, where he has coached in the Batavia Youth Football League and been involved in community activities, such as volunteering at the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.

Pepin moved to Batavia in 2012. He is a founding member of Keep Batavia Neighborhoods, which has voiced opposition to the proposed rezoning of land for an industrial park at Kirk Road and Wind Energy Pass on the city’s east side.

In August, Sparks announced he was resigning from the City Council because he was moving to North Aurora.

Sparks first was elected to the City Council in 2005.

Sparks’ term expires in April. Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and the City Council will appoint someone to fill the seat until April.

The City Council has 14 aldermen – two for each of the seven wards in the city. A map of the city’s wards is at www. cityofbatavia.net.

A Kane County Emergency Management Humvee was among several vehicles on display Saturday at the Elburn Safety Expo at Lions Park in Elburn.

Safety expo draws crowd to Lions Park ELBURN – Ann Whiteside and her daughter, Paige, 9, didn’t let Saturday’s blustery and rainy weather stop them from attending the Elburn Safety Expo at Lions Park.

“We put on our winter clothes and braved it,” Whiteside said. Both of them donned mittens in an attempt to keep warm in the face of 40-degree temperatures.

This was the first year of the event, organized by the Elburn Community Emergency Response Team and the Illinois Council of Police, a union rep-

resenting the Elburn Police Department’s patrol officers and sergeants. Among other things, Paige learned how to perform CPR at the event.

“We’ve had fun. We just wish it was a little warmer,” Whiteside said.

The expo featured disaster preparedness, as well as safety awareness.

“We have a relationship with our members to assist them in helping the community,” said Richard Bruno, staff representative for the Illinois Council of Police.

Among the displays at the expo was Kane County Emergency Management Agency’s

Mobile Command Center.

“It is basically an emergency center on wheels,” said Jake Murphy, a volunteer with the agency.

Among those touring the vehicle was Greg Loebbaka of Sugar Grove.

“It’s good to know that this kind of thing exists for our use,” he said.

Janelle McCornack of Elburn and her two children also toured the vehicle. As an emergency medical services instructor, McCornack knows the importance of events like the safety expo.

“It is important for the kids to be prepared,” she said.

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East and St. Charles North boys soccer went into the half with the host Saints leading, 2-1, in what had largely been a 50-50 boys soccer match, with both sides feeling confident.

Only East would leave the pitch that way after breaking out for three more goals in the second half in what quickly turned into a rout as the Saints bested their Upstate Eight Conference River Division rivals, 5-1.

Substitute Collin Sheehan entered the game as a forward and scored twice for the Saints in consecutive minutes, notching goals in the 47th and 48th.

Sheehan’s first goal increased the lead to 3-1 after he slotted a ball for the far post inside the box. A minute later, East stole the ball and Zach Newman added his second assist of the afternoon when he found Sheehan open in space.

The depth of East’s bench was crucial to its success, with Sheehan replacing forward Tyler Robbins, who started the game for the Saints in a 4-5-1 alignment and twice put the Saints up a goal in the first half.

Playing without talented forward Zach Manibog, who remains day-to-day with a hamstring injury, East defender and captain Ryan Stackhouse said everyone on the team knows their roles and was ready when called upon.

“That’s our team this year,” Stackhouse said. “We can put anyone in any position coming off the bench.

They know how to play, and they know the system and it’s good for them.”

East coach Paul Jennison was impressed with his side’s win and resiliency, as well as the bench depth, after a tough, 3-2, loss against Wheaton Academy during the week.

“That’s what teams do, that’s what squads do. They don’t rely on one player, and the lads have been excellent the last couple games figuring that out. It was a great response, and I couldn’t really ask any more with a day like this.”

Robbins put the Saints on top early in the game, scoring on a pass from midfielder Jared Brown in the fifth minute after East pushed forward early.

But instead of giving the hosts momentum, the North Stars doubled their determination after going down a goal, dominating possession for the majority of the first

half.

North created a number of chances before senior forward Christopher Watson finally struck gold on a flick from 15 yards out to tie the score at 1-1 in the 17th minute.

East went on the counterattack, and Taylor Ortiz hit the crossbar after executing a neat give-and-go with Sheehan in the 21st minute.

Seven minutes later, Robbins would find his second goal off a bouncing ball, heading it over diving North goalkeeper Kevin Sabres.

The two sides traded corner kicks down the stretch heading into the half, but it was still anyone’s game to call with 40 minutes remaining.

Sheehan’s quick double changed that, with East adding its fifth goal in the 67th minute when substitute Jack Petras beat Sabres far post to increase the lead to the final

margin.

“We got pumped up during the half,” Sheehan said. “It’s against North, our rival; we’ve got to put them away. I was just finding a lot of space to begin the half and was able to sneak one past the goalie. “ North was disappointed with the result, but was determined to use it as fuel for a playoff run, Watson said.

“We’re just trying to get better for playoffs, so we’re not going to take it as a total loss,” Watson said. “We can learn from it. Getting beat by them that bad, we always know that we can do better, and that’s what we plan to do.”

With the conditions on the pitch less than ideal as temperatures hovered around the low 40s and with rain coming down intermittently, both sides knew that the challenge would be difficult in an al-

ready intense rivalry game.

North coach Eric Willson was disappointed with the second half performance from his side and said North would look to regroup before playing another top team in Batavia next week.

“Today was uncharacteristic of us,” Willson said. “All we can do is get back to training and see if we can figure it out. We’ve got Batavia on Tuesday.”

East has high expectations this year and is hopeful to make a run later this month when the Class 3A postseason starts. The weather could realistically be as bad as playing conditions were against North, but Jennison wasn’t deterred.

“If we’re still playing at the end of October, beginning of November, even if it’s 20 degrees outside, that will be well worth it,” he said.

The standings were similar for the boys, who scored a 151.

Naperville Central was first among 23 teams with 97 points, with Prairie Ridge next at 134.

Ryan Wieties led the Bulldogs boys, taking fourth in 15:23.7, slightly ahead of St. Charles East’s Mark Sciurba (fifth, 15:25.8). The time marked a course-best for Wieties, a veteran senior, but not an overall personal record. He

established that at Detweiller earlier this season.

“Detweiller’s definitely a faster course, so I think it probably was a small PR [today],” Bulldogs coach Bronco Meeks said. “We’re obviously still not peaking for this meet.

We’re looking toward conference and sectionals and state.

This is just a stepping stone.

They’re on their way.”

In 2007, Stibgen’s sister, Paige, died from acute myeloid leukemia at age 11.

“Because they don’t like bands; they’re very funny about their socks. We’re like, ‘Laces, we’re doing laces.’ ” The North football team wore gold socks during Friday’s homecoming win against Larkin, while the cheerleaders sported gold bows.

Kaneland boys soccer finishes 2nd at Rock Island Invitational KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ROCK ISLAND – Kaneland capped a strong weekend with a second-place finish at the Rock Island boys soccer invitational, defeating the host Rocks, 3-1, before suffering a 2-1 loss to East Moline United in the championship match.

The Knights, who won their first two tournament matches Friday, are 8-7-2.

Responding from a Rocks goal in the 13th minute to open the day, Kaneland scored three unanswered goals, including the first two from junior forward/midfielder Felipe Speraggi.

An early deficit also sprouted against East Moline, which scored in the fifth minute and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The eventual champions scored in the 45th minute, converting a penalty kick. Kaneland earned its lone score of the match three minutes later, as Angel Escontrias scored a

ST. CHARLES – Hot chocolate and Ramen noodles proved popular sellers at Saturday’s St. Charles North Cross Country Invitational.

A sport so reliant on the cyclical felt the effects even at the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve concession stand.

With a intermittent mist falling and temperatures hovering in the 40s, athletes encountered a new but ultimately familiar challenge. Batavia’s runners were the most adaptable, finishing third as a team in both the boys and girls races.

“I feel like during the race, cold is better for me, because I can move faster and am not as tired,” said Batavia freshman Emma Stephens, who paced the Bulldogs girls with an eighth-place finish in 17:42.2.

“Obviously, I like warm weather before and after the race, but the cold works best.”

Another Batavian, Marmion senior Brady Bobbitt, took a different tack after shivering through the final stages of the boys race in a third-place 15:14.8.

“I would probably stick to a warmer day,” Bobbitt said.

“As you can tell, I can barely move my mouth. The other guys ahead of me both had gloves and hats, so I guess I could have went with that.

Might have helped, but I don’t know.”

Dear Plotting And Planning: Cremation is nothing new. It has been practiced since ancient times – 5,000 years ago and possibly even longer than that. The early Romans did it, but with the rise of Christianity it fell out of favor.

(It is accepted by the Christian religion today.)

Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs commonly cremate their deceased. However, it is opposed by traditional Jewish culture, which believes our bodies belong to God and we are not supposed to actively destroy God’s property, and by the Muslim religion.

You and your friend have covered the major considerations that make people choose cremation instead of burial. I would only add that in the past, I have heard from readers who could not bear to part with the remains of their loved one, and who have kept the ashes in their home. Others would like to have their own ashes co-mingled with their loved one’s at the appropriate time and placed in a columbarium.

Dear Abby: I am a male in the training department at my office. A lot of times, because the people I train are new hires, there are dress code violations from people who appear to be testing the limits. Most of the violations involve women who wear clothing that’s too revealing, in spite of the fact they receive a document at the start of training explaining what is and is not appropriate attire.

There are some deals that can be quite deceptive. The normal-looking bid or play is wrong, and the hard part is recognizing that and making the correct choice.

In this deal, for example, who should come out ahead in four clubs after West leads the diamond two?

South opened with a modern weak three clubs, holding only a six-card suit. After West’s clearcut takeout double, North should have bid four clubs immediately if willing to go that high over three diamonds.

South has seven potential losers: two spades, one heart, three diamonds and one club. He will have to establish dummy’s heart king and ruff some diamonds in the dummy.

At the table, South won with his diamond ace and led the heart queen. Now West found the only winning defense: He won and shifted to his low trump. He saw the need to try to reduce those ruffs in the shorter trump hand.

South won with dummy’s ace (finessing would not have helped), discarded a spade on the heart king, ruffed a heart in his hand, ruffed a diamond on the board, and called for a heart.

Now East undid his partner’s good work by ruffing. South overruffed, trumped another diamond, and discarded his last spade on the high heart eight. West had to ruff, but it cost his trump trick. If East had discarded on the fourth heart, he could have ruffed the fifth heart and the defenders would have taken one spade, one heart, one club and either one diamond or a second club.

In general on defense, do not waste a trump by ruffing a loser.
