There’s no business like shrew business GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Earlier this week, a couple of members of the St. Charles Park District naturalist staff headed out to complete some prep work for an upcoming school program.

Now, this news in itself isn’t earth-shaking, nor even groundbreaking. Over the course of a year we prep our outdoor teaching areas for, give or take, eight different programs that reach more than 6,000 area students.

This week’s job though was, literally, the pits.

Nature Programs Coordinator Lisa O’Brien and I were deep within the Hickory Knolls Natural Area, removing the plywood covers from the archaeological dig site – said pits – we’ve simulated near the park’s pothole wetlands.

The boards, in place for 11 months out of the year, allow mini-ecosystems to develop in the sandy soil that lies beneath. Spiders and centipedes feed on insects and other arthropods; millipedes munch on decaying plant material.

Last year we even found a couple of well-concealed tiger salamanders, both of which promptly retreated deep into their burrows when we lifted the lid on their world.

Big fans of biodiversity – the variety of life healthy environments display – Lisa and I each year anticipate the sorts of treasures we’ll find underneath the boards at the pits. As the broader-minded of the two of us, Lisa wondered aloud whether we’d find salamanders again, or maybe mammals of some sort. I, meanwhile, was hoping for snakes.

As it turned out, neither one of us was disappointed.

Fourteen 4-by-8-foot sheets of plywood cover the pits, and from the start we knew we’d be in for a treat. Board Nos. 3 and 4 had warped a bit, and

No. 5 displayed signs of being gnawed.

These small openings seemed like they’d appeal to a variety of small woodland creatures seeking cover for a day, a night or even a season. As we removed the screws that (mostly) held the panels in place, then lifted the boards, we saw all manner of creepy-crawlies – beetles, crickets, daddy longlegs – as well as much forest detritus – cottonwood down, dried leaves, assorted twigs and stems. And, running throughout, deep grooves in the sand – tunnels.

Continuing our work, we found the network of channels to be quite complex.

We came across a “pantry” – a food cache containing acorns and other small seeds; a “bedroom” consisting of cottonwood leaves tightly woven into a ball; and an area way off to the side that would probably best be described as a latrine.

As we analyzed the scene before us, we were momentarily distracted by the appearance of another pit resident, a young eastern garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis. I was thrilled! Lisa, well, not so much.

A silver dollar-sized hole

at the north end of the first pit gave us a strong indication of whom our pit-dweller might be. Familiar with holes of this sort, we both surmised its excavator was an eastern chipmunk, Tamias striatus.

At first, Lisa and I marveled at magnitude of what we imagined to be the industrious rodent’s creation.

That pit measures 8 feet wide and about 28 feet long, and tunnels traversed virtually every segment. The hole, we later discovered, was actually the entrance to an “underpass” that led to the other pit, which was replete with more tunnels, more caches and another sleeping chamber.

But something about this cozy arrangement didn’t seem quite right – most notably, the “latrine.” Chipmunk scat, by and large, is pelleted and closely resembles that of mice and rats. The deposits we were looking at though were longer and, for lack of better word, stringier.

Adding to the intrigue, an interesting odor pervaded the area closest to the burrow entrance. Somewhat musky, a wee bit rancid, it could best be described as a funk, dank and dark, hanging there in the humid air.

Once again Lisa and I

stopped to try and interpret the signs that surrounded us.

Could something other than a chipmunk be responsible?

The answer came to us rather suddenly – and left us just as fast. A streak of gray scuttled out of the burrow, took cover briefly beneath my crouched legs, then propelled itself toward the nearby brush and was gone.

A shrew! Specifically, Blarina brevicauda, the northern short-tailed shrew.

Suddenly, the diverse signs all added up. Shrews make use of elaborate tunnel systems; they cache food – including nuts, even though they are primarily carnivorous; they build ball-shaped nests; and they devote at least one underground chamber to restroom activities.

The musky odor made sense too, as short-tailed shrews use special glands to mark their territories with scent. The rankness could have been because of the shrew itself, or perhaps an unconsumed bit of meaty prey left somewhere close by.

What we didn’t get to investigate, and wish we had, were a couple of features that have made these mammals famous: Their blood-red teeth (because of iron in their tooth enamel), and their venom.

Yep, that’s right, shorttailed shrews are one of only a handful of mammals worldwide that are venomous. Used to subdue prey, the toxin allows shrews to take down animals much larger than themselves. Thanks to this considerable advantage, shrews’ diets can include mice, frogs, snakes, birds and – get this – salamanders. The animals we’d thought we’d find. Shrew present, salamanders absent. A coincidence? I think not.

As we made our way back to the office to tend to other tasks, Lisa and I couldn’t help but feel a might envious. Tunnels, chambers and caches; red teeth and venom. Compared to our mundane work as mere humans, there’s no business like shrew business.

GO WEST, YOUNG STUDENTS St. Charles North celebrates homecoming with parade on Route 64

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The incline toward the end of the St. Charles North homecoming parade on Friday did not bother Kempton Swartwood, but the cold did.

“The temperature could have been a little better, but it was good,” said Swartwood, a sophomore who walked with his fellow St. Charles North Mock Trial team members while it was 51 degrees outside.

Swartwood on Friday was one of about 700 St. Charles North High School students who walked, rode in vehicles or drove golf carts on Main Street during the parade, as spectators cheered and waved at them.

Unlike other parades, the St. Charles North outing started on Second Avenue, headed west on the Main Street bridge and ended at Sixth Street. All other Main Street parades use a west to east route, Erik Mahan, St. Charles police commander of traffic and special events, wrote in an email.

The North homecoming parade previously went east to west on Main Street in 2009 and 2010. The reverse route is more convenient for the St. Charles North community, said Erin Manheim, an English teacher and assistant director of student activities at the school.

“It’s much easier for our school to go this way because they are not recrossing a bridge to go back to school,” Manheim said.

Students are bused to downtown St. Charles for the parade, and many of the participants and student athletes take return buses back to the school, Manheim said.

Manheim has helped coordinate the St. Charles North homecoming parade for the past 14 years. She said it also is easier for school staff to

keep track of all the parade entries in the staging area used along Second Avenue between Main Street and Illinois Avenue.

The school relies on community members to loan convertibles or vintage cars for the parade, Manheim said.

One of the carts in the parade was decorated with hand drawn replicas of various rock album covers and represented three groups – the school’s Art Club, the Digital Media and Photo Club, and the National Art Honor Soci-

ety, said Erika Grauzinis, a North senior and the honor society’s president.

Grauzinis said the parade’s westbound route was unique and was glad the parade returned to Main Street this year, where many of the city’s iconic buildings are located.

The parade walkers did not appear fazed by the hilly part of Main Street toward the end of the route.

St. Charles resident Helena Faith said the hill was a great

spot to see all of the entries coming from the east side.

She watched the parade with her husband, Peter, and Julia, her 7-year-old daughter, from the northeast corner of

Fourth and Main streets.

Faith said her son Sam, a sophomore at St. Charles North, watched the parade closer to the Main Street bridge, where many students

and other families were gathered.

“It was just great to see the kids enjoying the parade and having fun,” Faith said. “Too bad it was a little chilly.”

MARJORIE L. MILTON Born: May 20, 1930; in Ida Grove, IA Died: Sept. 25, 2014; in St. Charles, IL Marjorie L. Milton, age 84, of St. Charles, Illinois passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014, in her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born May 20, 1930, in Ida Grove Iowa to Arthur and Beatrice Lindsay. She grew up in Arthur Iowa, graduated from Arthur High School in 1947, and in 1951 received a B.S. degree in Home Economics Education from Iowa State College.

Marge had three children, Curt Milton (Susan Graesser) of New Hampshire, Bradley Milton (Peggy Peterson) of Germany, and Amy (Bob) Boynton of St. Charles. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Lindsay Boynton (Dan Banovz), Kelly (Steve) Santell, Danny and Brad Boynton, Evan and Emily Milton.

Marge was a life-long learner.

She earned two Master’s degrees: an M.Ed. in Individualized Learning from La Verne University in 1977 and an M.A. in Teaching and Leadership from Roosevelt University in 2006. For twenty-three years Marge taught in St. Charles public schools. She was a creative and innovative teacher, fondly remembered for her positive impact on students and parents alike. After retiring from teaching, she served as an Associate Clinical Professor at Illinois State University 1997-2010, where she supervised dozens of student teachers before

finally retiring.

Marge was an American Red Cross swimming instructor for many years, and the Fox Valley Chapter Red Cross Volunteer of the Year in 1994. She taught AARP Defensive Driving, belonged to IEA and NEA (Illinois and National Education Associations), and PEO. Of her many volunteer activities; one of Marge’s favorites was docent at Sholes Pioneer School in St. Charles.

Marge was also a long-time member and active volunteer at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. She loved working on the women’s bazaar, teaching Vacation Bible School, quilting with other women in the church, and LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League).

Family sitting was another activity she enjoyed. Many individuals have fond memories of time spent with Marge while their parents were away. She loved to travel with family and friends, spending vacations in Florida, Mexico, and Europe. She attended a colleague’s wedding in India, and in 2010 enjoyed a safari in Africa, visiting Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. She visited friends in Japan and Vietnam for a month in 2012.

Diagnosed with acute myeloid

leukemia (AML) in October of 2013 Marge sustained a valiant year-long fight before finally succumbing to the disease. Her family and wide network of friends supported her through these times with countless visits, meals, mail, and other gifts.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Jane Lindsay; and brother, Bob Lindsay.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 28th at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 101 South Sixth Avenue, St. Charles, Illinois with Rev. Timothy Silber officiating. Private burial will be at Garfield Cemetery, St. Charles.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Marge’s memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

BATAVIA – Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden has retired from the district. Dryden made local and national headlines last year, when he instructed his students that they had the Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate themselves before answering an in-class survey about emotional and at-risk behavior.

Dryden contacted Batavia School District 101 officials Wednesday about wanting to retire. Wednesday was his last day with the district.

On Friday, he formally submitted his retirement letter, said Steve Pearce, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources.

Dryden was in his 21st year of service for the school district, Pearce said. The school board is set to vote on his retirement agreement during a special meeting Monday.

“We wish Mr. Dryden well in the next phase of his life,” Pearce said. “He is closing the chapter on this part of his career.”

The Batavia School District 101 board in May 2013 voted to issue a written warning of improper conduct to Dryden for his actions.

The notice warned Dryden not to provide legal advice to students, among other things.

Before the board issued the notice, then-Batavia School Superintendent Jack Barshinger docked Dryden a day’s pay.

BATAVIA – Rotolo Middle School seventh-grade student Pono Casey has a chance to take his music to a bigger audience next year.

Casey, who plays trumpet in Rotolo’s seventh-grade band, has been invited to travel to Europe next summer to go on a symphony concert tour with the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.

“I hope to learn some new techniques and a couple of languages, possibly,” Pono said.

The trip will cost more than $6,000. To help in defraying the cost, his family has turned to www.crowdrise. com, an online fundraising website.

Pono began to play the trumpet in fifth grade as part of a school program. This past summer, he was awarded a competitive scholarship to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. He recently found out that he was awarded a seat in the Blue Lake International Symphonic Band called Southern Winds.

“I love the sound of the trumpet,” Pono said. “It has a real beautiful sound.”

The person who will be directing the Southern Winds band is John Heath, who recently retired. He was the director of the Batavia High School Band for 22 years.

Rotolo Middle School band teacher Rob Buckley said Pono is deserving of the opportunity.

“Pono is a terrific musician,” Buckley wrote in an email. “He has always been a very strong musician, but he has made incredible progress at RMS. He has participated in everything our program has offered students his age.”

“He’s very good at time management,” said his father, Brendan Casey. He and his wife, Melissa Casey, said they are proud of what Pono has achieved.

Pono said he doesn’t know yet whether he will pursue music as a profession. But he said he likes the way it makes him feel.

“It makes me feel lighter and happier,” he said.

Batavia Parks Foundation to dedicate rebuilt boardwalk KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia Riverwalk was built by volunteers, and the tradition has continued with the recent completion of the boardwalk renovation.

The project was spearheaded by the Batavia Parks Foundation with the help of the Batavia Park District.

The park district will recognize the group of volunteers, as well as the donors at a ribbon cutting and ded-

ication ceremony at 2 p.m.

Sunday at the boardwalk, just north of the Peg Bond Center at Houston Street and North Island Avenue.

For more than a year, the foundation board and park district staff, along with a group of volunteers, put in more than 2,600 hours to rebuild the boardwalk, according to a news release from the Batavia Park District.

Throughout the renovation, many organizations, churches, businesses and

government organizations volunteered as “groups of the week.” In addition to the groups, individuals helped Riverwalk Boardwalk Committee members who dedicated every Saturday for the past 17 months to this project.

Following the dedication, the band Field Day, sponsored by Paul Wieland, will perform at the Riverwalk.

The custom of blessing animals is in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.

St. Peter Church in Geneva will host a blessing at noon today outside, near the main entrance to the church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

Lynn Wilson, liturgy director and organizer of the pet blessing at St. Peter, said the church has hosted a blessing for pets for years.

“Its significance is that God is our creator, and he created all the animals and they all have roles to play in our human existence,” Wilson said. “On the feast of St. Francis, we invoke God’s blessing on the animals.”

GENEVA – Holiday cards – featuring singing elves with red hats, blue snowmen holding hands, pine needles amid snowflakes and three kings – offer wishes on cards made by the adult clients of Marklund at Mill Creek near Geneva.

Each box of 20 cards will cost $25. The cards support Marklund’s mission to provide services to people with profound developmental disabilities, said Dawn Lassiter-Brueske, the agency’s spokeswoman.

This is the third year adult clients in the developmental training program have created holiday cards with the help of their instructors, Lassiter-Brueske said.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

By DONNA F. EDWARDS The Root About a year ago, the federal government came to a dead halt – shut down by the obstructionism of Republicans in Congress.

For more than two weeks, national parks closed, critical medical research stopped and our economy lost billions of dollars.

American families and small businesses were unable to acquire federal loans and mortgages. Contracts between small businesses and the Department of Defense dropped by almost one-third; our veterans’ disability claims were stalled; and 500,000 workers were sent home without pay, unsure when they could return to work and whether they could make ends meet to provide for their families.

The data confirm what we already knew a year ago: The GOP government shutdown hurt everyday Americans, yet Republicans in Congress want us to forget their irresponsibility. But no American can forget these real costs for American families because the economic impacts were extensive and severe.

Standard & Poor’s Rating Services estimated that the shutdown cost the U.S. economy nearly $24 billion. Our gross domestic product for the fourth quarter of 2013 fell by an estimated 0.2 to 0.6 percentage points, or roughly $2 billion to $6 billion. Republicans – who tout themselves as the party of fiscal responsibility – were willing to risk increasing short-term interest rates and increasing the annual deficit.

Republicans in Congress want us to forget the damage they caused to the reputation of our country abroad,

reflecting poorly on the U.S. government’s ability to be a world leader and demonstrate fiscal responsibility.

Many Republicans cheered these results, claiming that the government shutdown, despite the harm it did to American families and our economy, was “absolutely” worth it and potentially even worth repeating. The American people disagree, however, and we will not forget.

We are tired of politics by extortion and so-called leaders who are willing to gamble with families’ livelihoods and our country’s economic well-being to achieve their political goals.

American families meet their financial responsibilities, and they expect our government to do the same.

That’s why House Democrats have put forth an agenda to help grow our economy by providing equal pay for equal work, investing in infrastructure to create good jobs here at home, and expanding quality child care and educational opportunities to ensure that everyone has the skills necessary to compete and succeed in a 21st century economy.

One year ago the American people witnessed stark evidence that today’s GOP, controlling the House of Representatives, has little regard for their values or for ensuring that they have a responsible, functional government. One year later – about a month before Election Day – it is time for Americans to make a change.

The district’s teachers will receive a salary increase of 3.99 percent for the current school

year. It is the final salary schedule for the contract that spanned from the 2012-13 year to the current school year. Kaneland officials said the total cost for the salary increase would be $962,000, and that there is money available in the budget to cover the increase.

The deal was announced after Monday’s school board meeting, in a joint statement issued by Lynn McHenry, chief

negotiator for the Kaneland Education Association, and Cheryl Krauspe, president of the Kaneland School District 302 Board.

Krauspe said attempts were made to negotiate into the future, but they were unsuccessful.

She said “we’re taking a break” on negotiations at the moment.

That could mean the board members who negotiate the next contract with the KEA might be different than the group in place

the search for a new superintendent, which is expected to run through December.

“It’s not that the superintendent change is not significant, of course it is,” she said. “But a change in the board does have a big impact.”

McHenry said the length of the contract will be determined by the negotiations. She said Kaneland has had various lengths of contracts in the past.

Not one flag was displayed. What’s the matter with you people? Where is your pride and love of your country? Poland showed us what solidarity is all about. Are they a better people than us? Come on.

Get those flags out of moth balls.

But I am blessed if I can help you to pack your stuff and get out of St. Charles. St. Charles doesn’t need people like you. We fought hard to live here. We put our kids through the school system.

Vikings march easily to 6-0 record

Before, between and after those plays, good, old-fashioned efficiency subdued Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival St. Charles East.

Touchdown drives of 85, 80, 89, 70, 80 and 76 yards sparked the Vikings past the Saints, 407, maintaining Geneva’s perfect start to the season while clinching a playoff berth.

“It was nice to see a lot of things work for us and showing how much we can do, and that we’re not all just the pass game. That we can move the ball on the ground, as well,” Vikings right tackle Loudon Vollbrecht said. “So it was nice to explore our options and get used to being able to go anywhere, and not put all the pressure on the quarterback’s shoulders.”

Northern Illinois-bound Geneva QB Daniel Santacaterina shined for the Vikings (6-0, 4-0 UEC River) anyway, finishing 22 for 34 for 298 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. His older brother, Michael, now an NIU linebacker, was a Geneva senior during the Vikings’ most recent 6-0 start, in 2009.

Temple (10 receptions, 133 yards) caught two TDs Friday, while Landi enjoyed a breakout night of seven catches, 121 yards and one score. On the ground, Justin Taormina rushed 22 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

“The clock was theirs,” Saints coach Bryce Farquhar said. “Geneva really owned that tonight.”

In the first half, Geneva ran 41 offensive plays to 14 for East (2-4, 2-2). The Vikings scored on three of their four possessions, with every Geneva touchdown drive using at least 11 plays and covering no fewer than 80 yards.

The Vikings’ signature possession ended just before halftime, a 17-play, 91-yard trip that swallowed 7:08 of clock time. Landi starred throughout, snagging a pair of 19-yard

“I’ve learned a lot,” Landi said. “I always think I can’t get it, and then as long as I reach for it and get a hand on it. ... It obviously worked out, the ball bounced right back to me.”

Led by veteran defensive linemen Stephen Kemp and Matt Loberg, Geneva limited East’s ground-based attack to 70 yards on 18 carries. The Vikings keyed on senior Ramon Lopez, which occasionally opened up big lanes for Saints quarterback Aiden Wright on

East opened its first possession with three runs for five yards, prompting a Nick Candre punt. Things turned much brighter for the Saints moments later, as the Vikings’ Chris Barger fumbled a fair catch and East’s Jack Russell recovered.

The drive ended with a missed field goal, but the Saints looked sharper to begin the second half, despite offensive tackle Brennan Bosch leaving the game with an injury. Wright hit Candre for a 15yard touchdown on the open-

ing possession of the third quarter. Candre’s point-after trimmed the deficit to 20-7, but Geneva got the ball back, and on this night, that was enough.

East has no margin for error now if it intends to return to the playoffs.

“We’ve got three must-win games. Our goal is to win every game,” Farquhar said.

“We want to be at that 5-4 mark right now, and we think we can do that. We really think we’ll be able to execute with what we have.”

Note: On the eve of Wisconsin’s visit to Big Ten rival Northwestern today, the Badgers’ marching band entertained the crowd before the game, at halftime and for a few songs after the final whistle.

East band officials capitalized on a connection, and also have welcomed Ohio State’s band to Norris Stadium in past seasons.

SYCAMORE – For the second straight week, a fourth-quarter rally by the Kaneland football team ended with an interception.

This time, it was Sycamore defensive back Bryce Hansen whose interception secured a 14-7 victory for the Spartans on Friday night at Engh Community Field.

“To give up one score to these guys is saying something,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said of Kaneland, who had been averaging 30.2 points a game entering the contest.

The Knights took over after Tyler Maveus had a 32-yard field goal attempt blocked. Taking over on its own 29, Kaneland marched down field, converting two third downs – including a third-and-15 after Brett Weaver sacked Jake Marczuk with 33 seconds left.

But Marczuk ran for 21 on the next play. After he led Connor Fedderly – who set a school record for receiving against DeKalb the previous week – too far on a slant on first down, the Knights (2-4, 0-3 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) ran a similar play on second that Hansen read all the way.

“We had to keep our heads up no matter what,” Hansen said. “Win or lose we had to keep going no matter what.

And we came out with the win.”

Against DeKalb, a 37-34 loss, Kaneland had the ball in the final seconds but an interception ended that rally in its opponents territory as well.

Coach Tom Fedderly said he was proud of his team’s performance in the hard-fought game. Even though it was the fourth loss in a row, three of the losses have been by a touchdown of less.

“It’s where we want to be,” Tom Fedderly said. “We just need to cash it in next time.”

The Spartans (4-2, 1-1) – winners of two straight since a 5540 loss to DeKalb – scored the first two touchdowns in the game. Brett Weaver scored on a 1-yard plunge late in the second quarter, then Dion Hooker broke off his only run of more than 7 yards – a 63-yard run up the left side that put the

The Knights managed just 81 yards passing in the game – Fedderly had more than three times that by himself against the Barbs the week before.

Tom Fedderly said the Sycamore defense played really (22) interception during the game well and was happy with the way his team performed.

“We marched it down there Sycamore went three-and- and had a couple shots at the out, but caught a break when end zone,” Fedderly said.

Cadets’ homecoming fizzles out North Stars romp

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – The Marmion football team had two weeks to gear up for its homecoming matchup with Fenwick after accepting a forfeit win last week.

After the Friars smashed the Cadets, 49-13, it’s back to the drawing board for Marmion, but not before some substantial wound-licking.

“One of the biggest disappointments of my career at Marmion,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “Oh, yeah. … Being homecoming, conference game, two weeks of preparation. We were able to get healthy. They manhandled us.”

Marmion led, 6-0, after the first quarter thanks to a pair of field goals by sophomore Connor Hoeft, one from 29 yards and another from 31. The first was set up by Noel Abraham’s interception.

But the final three quarters were a mismatch, to Thorpe’s surprise and chagrin.

“It’s on me,” Thorpe said.

“When you get beat this bad, 4913, the coaches, we didn’t have our kids prepared, offensively, defensively, special teams even.”

The Friars (4-2, 2-0 Chicago Catholic League Green) scored 21 unanswered points to take command in the second quarter, including a 50-yard touchdown run on the first play of a drive from running back Pat Donahue.

Veteran Fenwick coach Gene Nudo said he gathered his entire team after the first quarter and challenged players to raise their level. The response was evident.

“We know the Cadets, they’re a tough team,” Nudo said. “Lord knows I’ve been facing them a long time over the years.

They’ve got disciplined kids, but we think we do, too. “ … Donahue’s an exceptional runner and we’ve got some guys that can stretch the field, and people have to honor those guys, too.”

As much as things unraveled for Marmion during the second quarter, the beginning of the third quarter was even uglier.

Fenwick’s Will Lattner returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown, and Marmion then fumbled away the kickoff, giving the balanced Friars a short field.

They soon cashed in, scoring on a 1-yard Adam Williams plunge with 9:29 left in the quarter. After the PAT, it was 35-6 Fenwick, and the chilly, wet conditions became all the gloomier for the home crowd.

Of Marmion’s numerous problems, botched snap exchanges were near the top of the list. A handful of them hampered Cadet drives, and one even led to a fumble return touchdown by Fenwick defensive lineman Harry Bell.

“Hands are cold, hands are wet – it’s tough to do some exchanges,” Marmion quarterback Rusty Joyce said. “We’ve just got to work harder in practice and work on those exchanges.”

Marmion’s lone touchdown drive was impressive, a 60-yard push during the third quarter that ended on a 7-yard TD run from junior Nathan Traxler.

But by then, the Cadets were on life support. In the big picture, Marmion (4-2, 1-1 CCL Green) remains a viable postseason threat, but Thorpe considers it gut-check time in the season.

“We had issues with homecoming activities, extracurricular activities,” Thorpe said.

“We’ll find out if football’s a priority to them or not.”

Marmion remains at home next week against De La Salle before closing with road contests at Aurora Christian and at Montini.

“We’ve got to win two of the next three, whichever two, and I want us to win all three and finish the season strong,” Joyce said. “This is a tough loss but we’ve got to bounce back. This is over now, and we’ve got to win the next two.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North alumni went home happy from Friday night’s homecoming game as the North Stars trounced Larkin, 56-7, in an Upstate Eight Conference River contest.

North’s offensive explosion was sparked by the return of junior running back Dom Sidari and the continued improvement of Eric Linz, the sophomore called up to varsity when Sidari missed time with back woes.

“Dom is a difference maker, no doubt about that,” North Stars coach Rob Pomazak said. “Dom did a great job. He runs with passion.”

Equally impressive was the North Stars’ defense, which limited the Royals to a total of 181 yards and picked off five David Hibbler passes.

“I knew that they were going to come out and try to beat us vertically. I thought our kids did a nice job on making the adjustments and playing within our scheme,” Pomazak said. “Defensive line got pressure and the secondary did their job.”

Sidari gained 106 yard on 10 carries and scored two of the North Stars’ three first quarter touchdowns.

On his second carry of the night, he scrambled 2 yards for a touchdown at the 3:59 mark. He scored his second

North quarterback Nathan Didier competed 10 of 12 passes for 117 yards and gained 78 yards rushing.

The senior QB had three touchdown passes; a 2-yard toss to Jack Callaghan to open the North Stars’ scoring; a 6-yarder to Blake Kastein in the second period and a 20yard throw to Kyle Novotney in the third quarter.

North, which snapped a two-game losing streak, will look to become playoff-eligible next week at Streamwood.

first one came with 4:31 left in the opening quarter when he scampered 9 yards into the Wildcats’ end zone to make it 7-0 after the Howie Morgano extra point. Morgano was perfect on the night as he converted all seven extra point attempts.

Batavia made it 14-0 with 33 seconds left in the first quarter when Garrett scored his second TD of the night as he ran the ball in from 1 yard out for the 14-0 lead after the Morgano extra point. The TD drive was set up by a Batavia blocked punt at the 3:16 mark of the quarter.

Batavia scored two more TDs in the second quarter when quarterback Kyle Niemiec threw a 29-yard strike to

The Bulldogs got their final touchdown of the opening half when Garrett scored his third and final TD of the night on a 9-yard run with 6:44 left until halftime. The only question at that point was when would the Bulldogs turn the game clock into a running clock.

“Running outside was way more effective for us tonight,” Garrett said. “It feels great to be playoff eligible now. I saw last year’s team go through the playoffs the way they did and I can’t wait to go through that same thing.”

The Bulldogs added a TD in third quarter from senior running back Noah Frazier and in the final quarter from senior running back Keaton Drees on an 11-yard run to seal the win.

“I was very happy with the way our linemen pushed West Chicago off the ball,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said.

Eagles give Mustangs a scare in loss

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – With Class 7A powerhouse St. Rita football team coming to town Friday night, Nick Edlund and Aurora Christian prepared for the matchup the running back dubbed “David vs. Goliath.”

For a while, at least, it looked like the Class 3A school was going to pull off the upset, with Aurora Christian leading 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

But with temperatures in the 40s and rain swirling down, St. Rita (5-1) and its running game became too much to handle as the visitors scored twice in the fourth quarter to win the Chicago Catholic League crossover, 35-21.

Aurora Christian (4-2) gave all it had and overcame a slow start to head into halftime with the score tied at 14.

With 11 seconds left, senior quarterback Austin Bray found Jacolby Maxwell for an 8-yard touchdown strike, with the extra point putting the sides level going into the half.

Bray and Maxwell connected again in the third quarter on a huge fourth-and-7 from the St. Rita 18-yard line.

Maxwell beat his man off the line and Bray found him in the end zone, with the extra point giving Aurora Christian its first lead of the night.

But the potent St. Rita rushing duo of quarterback C.J. Weydeman and running back Tyre

Lee proved too much for the Eagles in the fourth quarter, with Lee adding two touchdowns.

Weydeman finished with three rushing touchdowns and said the balance he and Lee shared kept them calm in big spots.

Down 28-21, the Eagles had a chance late in the game, but facing a fourth-and-8 from midfield, Bray was forced out of the pocket and was only able to gain three yards.

Bray limped off the field on the play with what appeared to be a sprained ankle and did not re-enter on the Eagles’ final offensive series, which resulted in two fumbles from backup quarterback Ben Weerts.

“I cannot say enough about how proud I am of this football team with the fight that they had and the resiliency that they had,” Eagles coach Dave Beebe said. “The lack of fear–we respect everybody that we play but we just don’t fear anybody and that’s the way you have to play the game.”

WEST CHICAGO – In the early stages, Friday night’s tilt between the Batavia football team and West Chicago looked like it could shape up to be a competitive game.

Batavia did not score any points until just 4:30 remained in the first quarter, but then it was all Bulldogs as they rolled over the Wildcats, 49-0, for their fifth straight win.

The win made the Bulldogs (5-1, 4-0 UEC River) playoff eligible and a win next week at Elgin would guarantee the defending 6A state champions a return trip to the playoffs.

“We thought we could run on them from what we saw on film this week,” Bulldogs junior running back Zach Garrett said. “My offensive line did a great job for me tonight. They opened up some really huge holes for me to run through.”

That’s an apples-to-oranges comparison considering the Bulldogs and Saints boys soccer teams are slotted in different IHSA Class 3A sectionals, but nonetheless it might not feel like justice to Bulldogs backers.

Postseason pairings were released Friday for boys soccer teams in classes 2A and 3A. St. Charles East, the top seed in the 19-team Class 3A Bartlett Sectional, will open with a regional semifinal Oct. 21 on its home field against either Glenbard East or Hoff-

man Estates.

St. Charles North, the Bartlett Sectional’s fourth seed, is a potential opponent of East’s in the sectional semifinals. The regular season meeting between East and North comes today.

Batavia, which beat East, 1-0, last month in Upstate Eight Conference River play, is the No. 2 seed at the 19-team 3A Bolingbrook Sectional behind top-seeded Naperville Central. The Bulldogs will face Plainfield Central or Plainfield East on Oct. 21 in a Metea Valley Regional semifinal.

St. Charles East sophomore girls tennis player Olivia Gapuz recently has faced several returning IHSA state tournament placers, an occasionally trying stretch she knows will only makes her better as the state series approaches. After playing JV last season, Gapuz made the jump to varsity this fall and has helped the Saints stay competitive in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. Catching up with Gapuz for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley asked about her season thus far and Gapuz’s earliest tennis memories. Here’s an edited transcript:

To what extent does this feel like a different atmosphere? I know they remodeled the courts and did some other renovations.

It did at first, but it seems like I’m more used to it now.

I’ve played tournaments where I’ve played doubles and singles, but recently I’ve been starting to train just for singles. … I feel like, since it’s more of the baseline, I feel that you have to move around more and just really know how to place the ball.

Well, it finally happened. Veteran Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden, one of Noah’s all-time favorite teachers, has reportedly left the building.

When I drove Noah and our neighbor-buddy Chris Kauchak home after school on Thursday afternoon, they said that they had heard from other students that the sudden departure of this beloved teacher was being called an “early retirement.”

Steve Pearce, assistant superintendent for Human Resources for Batavia School District-101 confirmed during a phone interview on Friday afternoon that, “John Dryden has submitted a letter of retirement, and we will recommend that our board approve this Monday night at a special meeting.”

Noah, a former student of Dryden’s, is really, really bummed about this news. He’s not alone. According to Jake Downing, 18, a senior at BHS: “He was the first teacher that actually made us think. He didn’t have us do busywork,” he said, and now he’s gone. But we need more teachers like him, not fewer.

Downing recalls that when he took Dryden’s world history class two years ago, challenging, sometimes controversial subjects were discussed. Noah, who took the same class last spring, remembers this, too. He appreciated that Dryden introduced his classmates and him to ideas they might not otherwise have encountered.

“How did he present them [controversial subjects]?” I asked Noah.

“He didn’t say anything one way or another. He just shared the various theories, like he always does, and said, ‘What do you think?’”

What do you think? I’m sure this question inspires lots of

Fallen leaves can be decomposed and enrich the soil with nutrients.

Autumn mysteries Monday night has become a regular night to eat out with several of my friends. Last week, as we departed one of our favorite spots, we all noted how the days have grown shorter. Not too long ago, fall seemed a distant thought, and now, fall is here and winter looms on the horizon. Because I actually enjoy fall and all its glory, I was prompted to read an article published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on the facts and mysteries of the season.

We may remember being taught why leaves turn colors in the fall: Longer nights decrease the production of chlorophyll. When the chlorophyll production actually stops, leaves take on their fall color which is either carotenoids or anthocyanins that are already present in the leaf. Carotenoids produce yellow, orange and brown colors; anthocyanins produce shades of reds, purples and crimson.

It is interesting to note, states the USDA, that the color of the autumn leaves is directly related to weather conditions occurring before and during the time when the chlorophyll is dwindling. The very best fall displays seem to follow a warm, wet spring, a favorable summer, and warm, sunny fall days with cool, crisp nights.

While we are enjoying the colors of autumn, deciduous trees are working to prepare

A layer of cells forms at the base of the leaf. Once the connecting tissues are sealed off, the leaf will fall from the tree.

Fallen leaves can be put to good use. They can be decomposed and enrich the soil with nutrients. In a forest, the fallen leaves decompose and provide a spongy humus layer which not only absorbs rainfall but also holds rainfall.

This informative article concluded with the following statement that is meaningful for all of us: “It could well be that the forest could no more survive without its annual replenishment from leaves than the individual tree could survive without shedding these leaves. The many beautiful interrelationships in the forest community leave us with myriad fascinating puzzles still to solve.”

ADVICE College girl encourages women to be independent Dear Abby: I read your column often and find it deeply troubling when girls write you lamenting that they are “still single.” I’m 18, in my freshman year of college and I have never dated. I’m perfectly OK with this.

I’m not writing to bash girls who are in high school relationships, but rather to show there’s an alternative.

Abby, please remind them that it’s fully acceptable for us to spend our teenage years single if we prefer. No one should feel pressured into a relationship because “everyone else is dating.”

Girlfriends, if you’re not ready for dating, then focus on discovering your beliefs, your purpose and what your talents, passions and values are.

If you choose to do it accompanied by a partner, that’s fine.

But if you prefer to journey

Simple measures can help relieve cubital tunnel pain Dear Doctor K: I have cubital tunnel syndrome. What’s the best treatment for it?

Dear Reader: Cubital tunnel syndrome is a trapped or pinched nerve problem, much like its better-known relative, carpal tunnel syndrome.

Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve gets compressed. The ulnar nerve extends from the spinal cord in your neck to your forearm and the pinky side of your hand. The nerve passes through a series of passageways, or tunnels. The tunnels are composed of tough layers of fibers that can pinch the nerve running through them.

The tunnel located behind the “funny bone” of your elbow is called the cubital tunnel. If you’ve ever hit your funny bone against something hard, you know that it’s not funny – it just hurts. Most nerves are buried deep inside the body, but in the cubital tunnel, the ulnar nerve is very close to the surface and easily injured.

When you bend your elbow more than 90 degrees, it stretches the ulnar nerve, pushing it against a bony canal. Tasks

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff that require you to extend and flex your elbow repeatedly can irritate and inflame the nerve.

Leaning or resting on the elbow for long periods (while driving, for instance) can also put pressure on the nerve. So, can holding a phone to your ear. Your sleep position may aggravate the problem if you sleep with your elbows bent. Injuries can also damage this nerve.

Nerves carry messages from the brain to the body, and from the body back up to the brain. The ulnar nerve carries signals from the brain that tell the muscles of the arm and hand to move. It also carries sensations – pain, touch, heat – from the arm and hand up to the brain.

The first symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome typically are numbness or tingling in the ring finger and little finger. Touching your elbow may cause a sudden, sharp pain. Your hands may also become weak and clumsy, and you may have trouble straightening your fingers.

The most important thing is to identify the actions that may have triggered the problem. For instance, switching to a headset-style phone and removing armrests from your office chair may help. Avoid leaning on your elbow, keeping your elbow flexed more than 90 degrees, and repeatedly bending and straightening your elbow. If your sleep position may be contributing to the problem, try sleeping on your side with a pillow supporting the entire length of your arm.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) can help reduce pain and swelling. So can wearing a splint to keep your elbow straight while you sleep.

If none of these changes help, your doctor may suggest minor surgery to relieve pressure on the ulnar nerve. This is usually effective. Fortunately, simpler measures almost always solve the problem and make surgery unnecessary.

Younger sister is a spy Dr. Wallace: I’m 17, and my younger sister is 13. I dearly love her (most of the time), but once in a while she really gets on my nerves.

I’m dating a super nice guy who is also 17.

Since we don’t have a lot of extra spending money, we designate Saturday night as our inexpensive date night, and he comes over and we pop popcorn, listen to music and watch television.

This works out perfectly because my parents visit my grandmother at her house Saturday nights.

My problem is my sister doesn’t want to visit grandma. She wants to stay home and “spy.”

She hangs around us the entire time that my boyfriend is here. I’ve begged and pleaded and even offered a bribe to her to leave us alone for a few minutes. It’s not that we are going to do something wrong; it’s just that we would like to be alone for a few moments. I realize that we could leave the house, but we don’t want to and, besides, I couldn’t leave my sister home alone.

The best solution – see if you can arrange for one or two of your sister’s best friends to spend some time with her on a Saturday night.

Dear Teens: Who is lonely? Elderly widows?

Divorcees living alone?

Bachelors? Some of them, yes. But, surprisingly, the loneliest group of all is you – the teenagers, says writer Dan Carlinsky.

Researchers at the University of Nebraska found that high school students are the most troubled by loneliness, with college students next in line.

Does this make sense?

Can a young active girl with a family and friends really be lonelier than a retiree living alone?

Young people, who tend to be idealistic, often want and expect to have many deep, lasting relationships. When things don’t turn out quite as they had hoped, the gap between desire and reality makes them feel let down and empty.

Older people, with a lifetime of experience, are more realistic. They know that “perfect” relationships are rare.

Since they have different expectations, they aren’t dissatisfied as often as teens are.

What often makes things worse for a lonely teen is the fear that, “I’m the only one who feels this way.” A sure way to end the loneliness is to be a “joiner.” Clubs, teams and other school activities will put an end to the “poor me” attitude.
