t’s a time of transition. Football players are preparing for playoffs, most of the fall sports are either in post-season play or team members already are reminiscing

Pancake breakfast at Cantigny Park

North Aurora teen’s bionic arm found Father, police credit news coverage, social media and a good Samaritan

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The missing $95,000 bionic arm of a North Aurora teenager has been recovered. Chicago police and the boy’s father credited news coverage, social media and a good Samaritan.

Members of the Luther family reported the arm stolen – mistakenly – because they could not find it when they retraced their steps and found that their car had been unlocked Oct. 18, Chicago Police Officer Jose Estrada said.

“It was recovered thanks to the help of a good Samaritan who saw it there and notified the father,” Estrada said. “It is fair to say without her help, we probably never would have recovered it.”

The missing arm belongs to North Aurora resident Samuel Luther, 16. His father, Derrick Luther, said the woman who told him about the location of his son’s missing bionic arm said she learned about the missing arm from her Facebook account’s news reports.

Shaquille Chandler, an employee of a Subway restaurant on the 1200 block of South Halsted Street in Chicago, said he found the arm.

He said it was being kept in the restaurant’s storage area until it was claimed.

“I was doing my daily routine. Me and another employee were cleaning up the dining area about two weeks ago, and I found it between the cushions,” Chandler said.

Derrick Luther said a woman saw the bionic arm at the restaurant Thursday morning.

He said she realized it was the missing arm. Derrick Luther said he blames himself for not going to the restaurant personally to look for the bionic arm.

“There was not a doubt in my head when my son said he did not take it in there,” Derrick Luther said. “He probably took it off because it’s easier to eat without it.

I had posters posted up. I had a Craigslist ad. The only thing I did not do was go to the restaurant, and for that, I take responsibility.”

Derrick Luther, and his wife, Tonja, got their son a bebionic3 bionic arm at a cost of roughly $95,000. Samuel was born without the lower part of his arm and used prosthetics before the bionic arm, Derrick Luther said.

Samuel Luther had the arm with him when he and his mother went to K Models Talent, 1909 S. Halsted St., Chicago, for Samuel’s modeling class, Derrick Luther said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Under No Child Left Behind, every child was expected to be proficient in reading and math this year – a standard that no school in the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas met, according to information the Illinois State Board of Education released today.

However, its data does show that a few elementary schools in the Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles districts topped 90 percent proficiency in some grades.

But meeting that 100 percent goal – which educators here called unrealistic – is no longer as important as it once was. Illinois applied for and received a waiver to the federal education requirements imposed by the 2001 act. The waiver took effect July 1.

“AYP is no more for the state of Illinois,” said Patty O’Neil, assistant superintendent for learning and teaching at Geneva School District 304.

Schools previously faced repercussions for not making AYP, or Adequate Yearly Progress.

“Ultimately, the waiver is the federal and state attempt to give educators what they’ve expressed they want in an accountability system,” according to the ISBE website. “No more consequences based on one annual test and no more comparisons of schools around the state and across the country with vastly different conditions and demographics.”

St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said the waiver allows schools to move away from the old benchmarks and toward a growth model.

“I think it’s more realistic right now,” he said.

pares students’ growth from year to year. It is known as the average growth value.

According to the report card, growth value scores greater than 100 indicate students are improving relative to their

grade level. An example is moving from “below standards” to “meets standards.”

Districts here notched average growth values greater than 100. Some individual schools surpassed 120: Kaneland’s John

Shields and John Stewart elementary schools scored 120.3 and 120.2 in math, respectively; and St. Charles’ Lincoln and Bell-Graham elementary schools scored 121.2 and 122.3 in math, respectively.

“It seems like it’s a better measure and a more understandable measure than what we had under No Child Left Behind,” Schlomann said, noting it measures the same group of students against themselves rather than two groups of students against each other.

O’Neil said the data will be more valuable over time, when it can be analyzed for trends.

Fire reported in STC school bus wheel well; no one injured

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – No one was injured Thursday in an incident in which the brakes on a St. Charles District 303 school bus overheated and started a small fire in the wheel well, officials said.

The bus was traveling on its route, heading east on Main Street, when someone smelled smoke, District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney said.

“The driver pulled over, called 911, got the kids off the bus,” Blaney said. “The brakes were smoldering, and there was a small fire in the wheel well. They put out the fire, and we sent another bus to pick up the kids and take them home.”

Blaney said the important thing to consider is that the students and the driver were not injured or hurt.

“The bus driver called 911 and made sure the kids were safe,” Blaney said.

The bus was towed to the district’s maintenance shed, where mechanics will figure out what happened to the brakes, Blaney said.

Anderson estimated about a dozen students were on the bus.

“The undercarriage started on fire and was smoldering,” Anderson said. “They put that out with a fire extinguisher, then the fire department broke out the hoses. They got the students off and transferred them to another bus.”

He was involved in youth soccer, playing for Burlington Central High School, Sockers FC, one year at the University of New Mexico, and three years at UIC. He was a youth soccer coach for an inner city club coaching U9 boys. He recently took up golf and became an accomplished golfer, bringing him many new friends.

Michael will be forever remembered for his smile that lit up a room, his laughter, and his thoughtfulness.

He loved horses and had a faithful companion, Luggy, whom he rode from Batavia to Wisconsin Dells.

Madison Scout Cantrell. Scout was a beautiful, kind, caring, smart, athletic, creative 9 year old girl who loved life and laughter, and loving people and being loved. She loved making people laugh with her infectious smile and one of a kind laugh that could brighten even the darkest day.

She was a friend to everyone and loved singing and dancing with her friends at recess and playing four square with the best of them. She was a smart and creative student at Wasco Elementary whose imagination and thirst for learning were limitless. Her dream, when she graduated high school, was to travel to Machu Picchu and explore the ancient civilizations.

She was a competitive swimmer on the St. Charles Swim Team and had just swam this past weekend, lifetime best swims in her events, especially in her butterfly which she was naturally gifted at. Her dream was to be an Olympic Swimmer on her days off from being a veterinarian.

She loved animals, any kind of animal, and loved researching them and taking care of them, especially her cat, Chessie, who was her constant companion at home. Her dream was to go to Duke University and study to become a veterinarian so she could help sick animals. A fact evidenced by the amount of containers housing rescued bugs and animals surrounding her house that she personally took care of.

She loved SpongeBob and Finding Nemo and Frozen and could quote and sing from them on cue. She played viola and recorder and loving playing duets with her sister Katie, who played cello.

She was creative and thoughtful and imaginative and loved crafting and drawing and making up stories and inventing games and making iPad videos. She loved collecting anything and everything, from Beanie Babies to rocks to pine cones to charms. She had recently founded

CLARA STONECIPHER Clara (Olson) (Hardt) Stonecipher, age 98, of Elburn, passed away on October 28, 2014, at Cadence Hospital, in Geneva.

Clara was born in 1916, in Chicago, to Swedish immigrant parents, who later moved to the Virgil area. A lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lily Lake, she graduated from Elburn High School in 1934, and from Sherman Hospital’s School of

Nursing in 1937.

She married Richard Hardt in 1939, and they had three children, Marilyn, Bill, and Marlene. They purchased the home at 241 Shannon St., Elburn, in 1945. Rich passed away suddenly in 1953. Clara married widower, Virgil Stonecipher, in November 1954, and his children, Tom and Debbie joined the family.

Clara was well known in the community of Elburn, serving as Village Health Nurse and helping Virg run their service station. She later worked at Elburn Northern Farm Service. Virg passed away in 1990.

Clara served as a member of the Kane County Mental Health Association Board, receiving their Lyle Oncken Community Service

Award in 1994; a member of the Elburn Fireman’s Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and later worked tirelessly for the Elburn Community Center and Food Bank. She was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow for humanitarian services by the Elburn Lion’s Club in 1994, and was honored as an Illinois Woman of Achievement in 2000, at Springfield, which was sponsored by the Illinois League of Women Voters and the Illinois Municipal League.

Those passing before her include her parents, Swan and Margaret Olson; husband, Richard Hardt; husband, Virgil Stonecipher; son, Richard Thomas Stonecipher; grandson, John Paul Dorneden; brothers, Carl Einar Olson and Kenneth

Olson; sisters-in-law, Adeline Olson, Ramona Olson, and Shirley Hardt; brother-in-law, Bill Barrett.

Surviving Clara are her children, Marilyn Hardt Walters Shanholtzer (Chuck) of Panama City Florida, William Hardt (Marilyn) of Naperville, Marlene Hardt Zanardi (Curt) of St. Charles, and Mary Deborah Stonecipher Dorneden of Montgomery, IL; and Dianne Stonecipher, daughter-in-law of Fort Meyers, Florida; niece, Diana Ohme White of Arizona; sister-in-law, Evelyn Barrett; and brother-in-law, Robert Hardt.

Also twelve grandchildren, fifteen great-grand-children, three greatgreat-grand-children, fourteen nieces and nephews. Numerous cousins in the United States and Sweden;

and many friends in the Elburn and surrounding communities.

Excel Automotive Repair, at 720 N. 17th St., Unit 2, St. Charles, will be ready to serve customers Monday morning, Minor Mobley said. Mobley was busy Thursday putting together the final touches on his independent business with his lead technician, Hector Plaza.

Mobley said his store will provide a variety of traditional auto shop services, including oil changes, tire alignments and brake work for all makes, models and vehicles. His employees will use Virtual Vehicle, a program that allows customers

to learn why a service or repair is necessary or recommended.

“This is a long time coming,” Mobley said Thursday inside the shop.

Mobley, who has been in the automotive repair business for about 10 years, first started thinking about opening his own shop in 2012.

He picked his store location based on ample parking and the fact that it is close to his home. Mobley lives in St. Charles with his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Ethan, 6, and Nicole, 4.

Mobley said he recognizes there are many auto shops in St. Charles, but he feels his store can build a positive relationship with residents.

Caudill is being held in the Kane County Jail on $200,000 bond. A hearing to reduce his bond is scheduled for Nov. 6.

Caudill was convicted of drunken driving in 1986, 1997, 1998, 2005 and 2006, according to his driving record, Druker said.

A fourth conviction is a felony resulting in a lifetime revocation of driving privileges with no relief available, according to the secretary of state’s “2014 DUI Fact Book.”

Because I believe that the role of Congress cannot be overstated, I plan to vote for Dennis Anderson in the 14th Congressional District. Mr. Anderson supports jobs bills that directly create jobs. These jobs not only improve the life of those employed, but also improve the infrastructure that business and society relies on.

These skills soon transferred to the classroom enough so that he received an academic and athletic scholarship to college.

He still struggles, but lacrosse gave him a venue to build his confidence and succeed.

Extracurricular activities are an essential part of our educational program. Therefore, it is our responsibility as a community to support our students with adequate resources and facilities.

The school board has provided us with a responsible option to do so. I encourage the community to vote “yes” to providing multi-purpose fields for our students.

When a campus bomb scare steered Thursday’s Class 4A Neuqua Valley Regional final between St. Charles North and Benet from a neutral site to the Redwings’ home floor, the North Stars encountered another challenge.

Or so they thought.

North coach Lindsey Hawkins channeled her best bus ride motivation about two hours before the match, reminding the North Stars they had defeated Neuqua Valley at its gym in Tuesday’s semifinal. Benet’s execution, then, rose above any other circumstance in a 25-11, 25-21 sweep that ended North’s season.

“We knew that the home court, that didn’t matter.

What mattered was how we were going to play,” North Stars senior setter Taryn Dal Degan said. “We really didn’t let that faze us, playing here.”

Benet (36-1) roared to early advantages of 10-4 and 15-6 in the opening set. The North Stars (27-10) reached double digits in points when the Redwings already had 22.

By then, outside hitters Dana Griffin and Veronica Snelling were well on their way to separate nine-kill nights. Setter Sara Nielsen fueled the top-seeded Redwings’ offense with 30 assists.

“We have so many hitters that can put the ball down no matter what,” Snelling said, “so whenever we’re down, we know that we have people that are going to help us come back and always execute whenever we need points.”

Kailey Grove’s kill helped North tie the score at 18 before Rachael Fara’s kill handed Benet a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

The North Stars adjusted to the Redwings’ speedy offense down the stretch. It proved to be too late.

“We were trying to match up in that first set with our blockers against their better hitters,” Hawkins said. “I mean, they were hitting some amazing shots that I don’t know how they were hitting. … In the second set, they gave it a fight. We knew we were in a tough regional, so it is what it is.”

Neuqua Valley officials announced a change of ven-

ue shortly before 4 p.m., after the school received a bomb threat by email late Thursday afternoon. Per reports, the email suggested a threat for action Friday, but the Neuqua Valley campus went on lockdown as authorities searched the premises.

Benet athletic director Gary Goforth said the match changed to Benet given the school’s proximity to Neuqua Valley, whose support staff worked the event. Playing Friday was an initial option, but ultimately was ruled out because of the uncertainty at Neuqua Valley.

Although the Redwings inherited a de facto home match as a result, a painted banner near the Benet athletic entrance seemed to neutralize the mood. “LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL” it read.

“I mean, we’re thankful we weren’t there before, when they were in the lockdown,” North junior right side hitter/setter Jaclyn Taylor said. “But we’re fine now. We came. We tried to do what we could do. Of course, we didn’t get the outcome that we wanted for our season.”

The Redwings actually had arrived at Neuqua Valley as the lockdown started.

Coach Brad Baker, commuting separately, reached his assistants and instructed the team to return home.

“We didn’t really know what happened until we were back in Lisle,” Snelling said.

A few hours later, North saw the writing on the wall against a Redwings team that defeated it, 25-11, 26-24, in September in St. Charles.

Claire Anderson (eight kills) and Taylor (five) led the attack, with Daley Krage and Emily Carroll both adding four kills. Dal Degan contributed 13 assists, and Taylor added 10. Megan Russell had nine digs.

“I’m really proud of how our team fought, especially in the second game,” Dal Degan said. “I’m glad we kind of scared them a little bit. Obviously, we would like a different outcome, but we knew we were the underdogs going into it, and I know [Hawkins] and the rest of the team is proud of how we fought. We knew we could win; we went in knowing that. But it just didn’t turn out the way we wanted.”

North finished 5-4 last season under first-year coach Rob Pomazak, but lacked enough playoff points – or opponents’ victories – to qualify for the field.

It’s the second straight season that a trio of Tri-Cities teams are playoff-bound. Batavia and Geneva also are part of the 7A draw, with the Bulldogs assigned to the south bracket and the North Stars and Vikings part of the north.

“Getting in back-to-back years has been a big deal for us,” Pardun said, “and we’re hoping the experience from last year will help us.”

The skinny: Lopsided Rolling Meadows losses don’t sting Rob Pomazak like they used to. Still, the second-year North coach, a 1996 Rolling Meadows graduate, figured last week’s Hersey game to be an anomaly.

The absence of Mustangs senior QB R.J. Mattucci, who re-aggravated a lingering shoulder injury in a Week 8 win at Pomazak’s former coaching stop, Elk Grove, took a toll. Mattucci practiced this week, but Mustangs coach Matt Mishler is confident in backup Luka Pavlakis’ ability to run the Mid-Suburban East co-champs’ spread option offense. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Pavlakis, who also plays linebacker, offers a bulkier running option, to boot.

“We’re preparing that [Mattucci] and everybody else will be fully healed, and we hope they are so we can go, and we can go toe to toe,” Pomazak said.

“They’ll give you a few different looks.

They’ll make you play some disciplined football, and if you make a mistake, they have enough speed to capitalize on it, that’s for sure.”

Mishler considers the Mustangs’ defense similar to North’s: “Try to get 11 hats to the ball.” Linebackers Ryan Kobus (inside) and Nick Devona (outside) both blend size and quickness in their bid to slow quarterback Nathan Didier, running backs Dom Sidari and Eric Lins and the North Stars.

“They’re big. They’re definitely big, and they play a fast, physics style of football,” Mishler said. “We’re going to have to match that physicality and play with speed.”

Extra point: This marks North’s ninth playoff appearance since the school’s varsity program began play in 2001.

The Illinois recruit rushed 151 times for 1,562 yards and 19 touchdowns in the regular season, but played in only one series last week.

To Marmion coach Dan Thorpe, one reason Brown finds room when he’s healthy is the creative spacing of his offensive linemen.

“Big, big offensive line. They get on you and it’s hard to get around them,” Thorpe said. “They use big splits, which creates natural seams. If you slightly don’t use your technique, the lineman is going to get a piece of you, and that’s just enough for a running back to go by you.”

Marmion QB Rusty Joyce (concussion) and TE Reilly Dougherty (torn PCL) are out after suffering injuries in the Montini game. With Johnny Tate now quarterbacking full time, leaving his defensive back duties to Eli Baltazar, that puts an extra premium on Marmion’s own successful ground game.

“People have to defend the whole field,” Thorpe said. “(Nathan) Traxler’s been running nice to the right, and (Jordan) Glasgow’s running nice to the left, and Lucas Warren is running nice up the middle. So people have to defend the whole field, which is nice.”

Extra point: Marmion’s defense allowed 3.6 yards a carry during the regular season. Opponents averaged 109.5 rushing yards a game compared to 141.1 yards passing.

CLASS 6A FIRST ROUND: (11) Grayslake North (6-3) at (6) St. Francis (7-2), 6 p.m. Saturday Indiana-bound Knights running back Titus Booker, a 6-1, 182-pounder, commands every opponent’s attention. Also an accomplished sprinter who was Class 3A runner-up in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 during the 2014 track season, he rushed for 1,931 yards and 26 touchdowns in the regular season.

An athletic Spartans defensive line keyed the team’s stingy regular-season effort – only 94 points allowed – and knows it’s in for a challenge here. Quinn Calcagno (10 tackles for loss) and Michael Riley (6.5) are among the leaders up front.

“They have some very talented players,” first-year Spartans coach Mike Fitzgerald said. “Their running back is a very dy-

namic guy who’s got the ability to break it from anywhere. He’s one of the fastest kids in the state in track, so we’ve got to do a great job of playing great team defense and trusting the guy next to us.”

QB Clint Bobowski (5.2 yards a carry) and RB Will Purdom (4.1) keyed the Spartans’ ground game after Steven Fassnacht’s season-ending ankle injury in Week 3.

Seven Spartans averaged at least 10 yards a reception in the team’s balanced spread offense, led by Jack Ahern (14.8).

“Balance to us is making sure everyone on the field is respected,” Fitzgerald said, “and I think we did a very good job of spreading the ball around to all our positions. … I was pleased with how quickly the guys got the system down.”

Extra point: Fitzgerald, a former Marist assistant, on the Spartans’ first venture into the 6A draw after an extended recent run in 5A: “Coming from 8A, I’m not very familiar with the 5A teams, 6A teams. It was going to be a new experience for me regardless. ... I didn’t really spend a lot of time analyzing that.”

Johnsburg hasn’t lost since its season opener against Oregon, while ACC lost two of its final three regular-season games. Maddy Barry dished 15 assists, Lexi VanHiel notched eight blocks and DeTamble added 15 digs for Central, which was airtight in its serve-receiving, yielding no aces.

Kaneland’s Riley Hannula had eight kills and fellow senior Anna Senese provided six kills and eight digs.

HAMPSHIRE – A few strategic adjustments helped.

The Burlington Central girls volleyball team turned Thursday’s IHSA Class 3A Hampshire Regional final against Kaneland sharply, recovering from a weak start to eliminate the Knights, 14-25, 25-20, 25-20.

Dunn, Kaneland’s Ball State-bound senior outside hitter, pounded 13 kills, but the Knights couldn’t rotate her back to the front row quickly enough to keep the third game from slipping away.

Central coach Marv Leavitt acknowledged it was important for his team to capitalize when Dunn wasn’t up front.

“Absolutely,” Leavitt said.

“Every time I’m looking and I’m saying ‘OK, can we score some points now.’ Because she’s just so tough,” Leavitt said. “And she brought it bigtime tonight.”

It was a battle of conference champions, with both the Rockets (31-6) and the

Knights, whose stout blocking was Game 1’s overriding storyline.

But Central regrouped in the second game, mixing up its shots better and benefitting from sharper serve-receive to negate the Knights’ block.

“The key thing we had to do was we had to pass to the net,” Leavitt said. “I don’t know why, we’re a really good passing team, but our passes were taking the setter off the net and taking our middles out of the game, and it’s so easy for them to block us then. So we had to get our passes more on the net, and that really helped.”

Kaneland led in Game 2, 17-16, after consecutive kills from Dunn, but Central standout Lauren Wiltsie responded with consecutive kills of her own to give the Rockets the lead for good.

Wiltsie returned after missing the regional semifinal with a foot injury and led her team with 10 kills.

“Taped it up, played – adrenaline’s probably going to go down a little bit so I’ll feel the pain a little bit later, but thank the Lord [for being able to play],” Wiltsie said.

The Vikings effectively neutralized the Huskies’ middle hitters to win their home regional title, 25-16, 25-20.

Geneva will play in the first semifinal match Tuesday at the Bartlett Sectional against Benet, the No. 1 seed in the sectional.

“Coming in, I think our kids did a real nice job of executing our game plan and really taking them out of their system, which showed in the first set,” first-year Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “Part of our game plan was going at them aggressively and keep them out of system. Their middles have been really effective and

Naperville North coach Jennifer Urban lamented a lukewarm start for her team.

“In the first set, I thought our [serving] wasn’t as strong, so our hitters were taking swings

about 10 feet off the net and that is a difficult position to be and we weren’t able to get our middles involved,” Urban said. “We depended upon our middles to score for us. That was a frustrating aspect for us tonight.”

The teams traded points early. Geneva took the lead for good 7-6 on a Huskies hitting error. The Vikings went on a 9-2 run to open up the game up.

“We knew we didn’t want a close game like Tuesday night.

We just wanted to finish them quickly,” said Vikings sophomore Grace Loberg, who led all players with nine kills. “We weren’t satisfied with what happened Tuesday night.”

Geneva (30-7) needed three sets Tuesday to fend off Metea Valley.

The Vikings appeared to be heading for another victory in the second set, charging out to an 18-8 lead.

Naperville North (26-10) rallied and pulled within 21-17.

Seitelman then called a timeout.

“She just told us we are still in this game. We have to keep the lead,” said senior Megan

Cameron, who had eight assists for Geneva. “We needed to get a good pass up and trust our hitters.”

The Vikings responded with a Loberg kill and closed out the game.

“We had a few mental lapses in the second [set], but I thought we rebounded nicely,” Seitelman said.

Kyley Thompson and Alexandria Mullen both had three kills for the Vikings. Kelsey Wicinski supplied seven digs and Mikayla Lansa was credited with 11 assists for Geneva.

Both Megan Wernette and Jenna LaCorte had four kills for Naperville. Teammate Arianna Budnik added three. Emily Kwak earned 10 assists for the Huskies and Emily Bushman had nine digs.

Now the fourth seeded Vikings will reverse roles and become an underdog against Benet.

“We got our work cut out for us,” Seitelman said. “It’s kind of exciting that we are going to play the number one seed in our sectional.”

“We are going to be an underdog,” Kull said, regarding the sectional. “It has been a long time since we were underdogs at sectionals. We have to improve how we do things, but this is a team that enjoys playing together. Everyone likes each other and that means a lot. They enjoy being together.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WEST CHICAGO – The Wheaton Academy girls volleyball team won its first regional title since 2007 on Thursday, blasting Ridgewood, 25-9, 25-19, to win an IHSA Class 3A regional title on the Warriors’ home court.

“It was a long time waiting, but the girls were excited,” Wheaton Academy coach D.A. Nichols said. “I have 10 seniors on the team this year, so it was fun for them.”

Sydney Vischer (14 kills), Alecia Funk (22 assists) and Jess Bosse (11 digs) helped the Warriors improve to 306.

“We played really well tonight,” Nichols said. “We just came out, we focused, we served great and we were in system quite a bit for the night. The first set, I think we just dominated evert aspect of it.”

The Royals (21-17) had contributions up and down the roster, getting them from veterans and relative newcomers.

Konovodoff added seven digs, and sophomore outside hitter Molly Curley added five kills and six digs.

Senior defensive specialist Domenique Voelsch had six digs, and junior setter Brooklyn Martner had 20 assists.

Many of Martner’s sets found their way to sophomore outside hitter Erin Burke, who led the team with nine kills.

Burke started and ended the second set with two of those nine kills and said the momentum gained in the first set carried over.

“We kept the momentum that we had in the first game and just kept building off of it,” Burke said. “We became stronger and stronger, and at the end it was just domination.”

Burke stressed that the Royals struggled early in the season but were coming together at the right time.

“Everyone on the team has a loving relationship. We have so much fun together, so winning [the regional] with my best friends was awesome.

Volleyball is a team sport. It has to start with the pass, then it’s in the setter’s hands and then it’s just my job to finish what they all start.”

The last time Theo Epstein hired the right manager at the right time and turned it into the right answer was when he hired Terry Francona to manage the Red Sox. Eleven years later, could he repeat history? With the guy who finished second to Francona in that process?

Given the frequency with which the Cubs’ third-year team president has gone through managers on the North Side already, he almost has to – especially as ownership writes checks to pay off a manager’s contract for the third time in four years.

But, then, Joe Maddon is universally considered the opportunity the Cubs could not refuse, from the moment he opted out of his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays a week ago.

Sources said Thursday the long-anticipated signing of Maddon to manage the Cubs was in the final stages. As the Sun-Times reported Tuesday,

final details were expected to be completed by today, sources said.

A news conference likely would be scheduled for early next week.

Officials from several teams, including some within the Cubs, say the pursuit of Maddon was not right to do to their sitting manager, Rick Renteria, even though Renteria will be paid for the two Joe Maddon years left on his contract and that he was told the club planned to talk with Maddon.

Renteria, who managed the Cubs to a 73-89 record in his first year as a big-league manager, was not expected to remain with the organization even if offered a front-office position. He would be the third manager fired by Epstein, with four total contract years left on those deals (including Mike Quade and Dale Sveum with one year left each).

But that speaks to the value of a manager as highly regarded as Maddon when he suddenly becomes a free agent.

Maddon’s agent, Alan Nero, said within the first day of Maddon’s availability that 10 teams contacted him.

The contract is expected to be worth at least $5 million a year, which would put Maddon among the top three highest-paid managers in the game.

An innovative thinker, exceptional communicator and only manager to lead the low-budget Rays to a winning record, Maddon is matchup-minded strategist built for the National League.

And he seems like the ideal fit for a Cubs team with several highly regarded prospects breaking into the big leagues and enough financial flexibility for the first time in six off-seasons to suggest competitive pieces to work with.

Maddon, a two-time manager of the year, oversaw a similar transition in Tampa Bay, going from last place to the World Series in his third year there, 2008.

AURORA – The Rosary volleyball team had little trouble brushing aside rival Aurora Central Catholic for a regional championship.

Sophomore libero Martha Konovodoff helped the No. 1-seeded Royals cruise to a commanding 25-10, 25-9 Class 3A Rosary Regional championship win Thursday over No. 3 ACC. Konovodoff unleashed four aces in the first six points of the second set en route to a lead that inflated to 19-4 before the eventual 25-9 final.

Living in the moment helped Konovodoff from the back line, where she finished with six aces.

“I do it for the team,” Konovodoff said. “I just go back there and think what I can do for them and what I can do. I never think ahead; I’m always just about that point, that moment, just so I can do it for the team. I just go back there and try to relax and calm down.”

Rosary won a regional for the first time during coach Rachel Hartmann’s three-year tenure. The Royals advance to a sectional semifinal against Marian Central on Tuesday at Rochelle.

Hartmann said it was rewarding to see the hard work pay off for everyone, especially the seniors who hadn’t experienced a regional championship.

“We had a very young team last year,” Hartmann said.

“They’re still a young team this year. It was something my first year when I came in that I knew it wasn’t going to be handed to us as a program.

We had to work hard the last two years, and some of these seniors were on my team as sophomores and they know what they had to do to get there. I’m just proud of them for believing in what we’re doing and working hard every day, so just very happy for the team.”

Caring kindergartners give sweet treats to cancer patients

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Gov. Pat Quinn recently announced the state’s exceptional college students who will be honored by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The academy will recognize students at the top of their class during the annual Student Laureate Convocation at 11 a.m. at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield.

The Lincoln Academy’s Student Laureate Awards are presented for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities to seniors from each of the state’s four-year, degree-granting colleges and universities, and one student from among the community colleges in Illinois.

The local students being honored are Augustana College student Natali K. Bode of Aurora and Aurora University student Hector Velazquez of North Aurora.

“I want to commend these students for their hard work, both in the classroom and in their communities,” Quinn said in a news release. “Their achievement and dedication attests to the value of higher education in Illinois, and the high quality students our schools produce.”

At the Student Laureate Convocation each student will receive a Student Laureate medallion, along with a $1,000 educational grant and a certificate of achievement.

This is the 40th year Lincoln Academy has celebrated students’ excellence in Illinois.

Student Laureate Katie Landgrebe of Northwestern University will speak on behalf of all the laureates. The invocation will be delivered by Dr. Robert Gervasi, president of Quincy University, and the benediction will be delivered by University of Illinois Springfield Chancellor Dr. Susan Koch.

The Sangamon Woodwind Consort will provide music, and a luncheon at the Illinois Executive Mansion will follow the Student Laureate Convocation.

Lincoln Academy was established more than 50 years ago to honor distinguished citizens with the state’s highest award, the Order of Lincoln.

Annual checkup is useful for catching disease early Dear Doctor K: I’m 73 and in great health. Do I really need to have an annual physical?

Dear Reader: Let’s start by defining “great health.” I would define it as having no known chronic (ongoing) illnesses. However, most people your age have at least one chronic illness, such as high blood pressure. People with chronic illnesses need to be checked out at least once a year, and usually more often.

Even if they don’t have any chronic illnesses, I ask my patients to come in for a checkup every year. That includes asking and answering some questions, a physical examination and some screening tests.

The questions probably are the most important part of an annual checkup. For example, I remember a man in his 50s who had no chronic conditions and exercised every day. He had a healthy diet – he was a vegan. When I asked him if he had been having any bothersome symptoms, he answered “no,” but hesitated just briefly before saying it. So, I pushed him: “Even a mild symptom that’s not very bothersome, but that is something new?”

He replied: “Well, sometimes I get this tingling sensation in my feet. It comes and goes.”

That gave me an idea, and

There is not a lot of evidence that a complete physical examination is valuable. In fact, an analysis of 14 trials that included more than 180,000 patients did not find that a yearly general health checkup decreased the risk of death or illness.

I always examine the heart, lungs, abdomen and skin. Even this limited examination is of unproven value. But I’ve discovered irregular heart rhythms, mild asthma and the occasional skin cancer.

But when a person has a symptom, parts of the physical examination can be extremely valuable. In my patient with the tingling sensations, I took a tuning fork and whacked it to make it vibrate. I asked him to close his eyes and to tell me when he felt the vibrations touch his skin.

When I placed the tuning fork on his ankles, he said nothing.

During an annual checkup, it is important for adults to get several types of immunizations every so often and a flu shot every

year. I checked my patient’s immunization record and gave him a flu shot.

Then it was time to order tests.

The screening tests that I prescribe during an annual checkup didn’t turn up any problems in this person, this year, but they are effective in catching (and sometimes curing) diseases in an early stage, such as various types of cancer and heart disease.

I added a blood test for vitamin B12 to the screening tests in my patient. His symptom of tingling, his inability to feel the vibration of the tuning fork, and the fact that he was a vegan made me suspect that his vitamin B12 levels were low – and they sure were.

Fortunately, vitamin B12 pills prevented what could have been permanent damage to his spinal cord.

So, I’d advise you not to skip an annual visit to your doctor.

You don’t need to have every nook and cranny of your person probed every year. But you do need certain questions asked, screening tests performed and immunizations given.

Solitude helps teens Dear Teens: Do you enjoy being alone at times, or are you frightened by it? Do you only feel worthy as a person when you’re in the company of friends?

“Even though solitude is obviously good for the soul, our culture places a strong emphasis on togetherness,” Sue Brown once wrote in a Seventeen magazine. She also noted that many teens feel bad when they’re by themselves, especially on social nights like Friday and Saturday, when they confuse aloneness with loneliness.

However, she also explained that regular solitude is crucial to a teen’s development.

And this fact has also been underscored by a University of Chicago research team, which studied lifestyle patterns of teens in Chicago’s suburbs. Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Dr. Reed Larson show that time alone can be a great help if it’s used productively. The article points out that solitude helped the majority of teens studied in three important ways: 1. Teens’ concentration is keener when they are able to be alone. Schoolwork and scores on intelligence tests are higher among those who spend the greatest amount of time alone.

2. Many teens report they feel more cheerful and alert after spending time alone. They find they’re friendlier than usual and better able to maintain good relationships.

3. Periods of solitude give teens an opportunity for reflection, helping them to think things through.

“It’s important to

The article also gives suggestions for teens to maximize the benefits of time away from the daily hubbub while minimizing feelings of isolation and loneliness: 1. If you have your own room at home, make it an enjoyable environment, conducive to self-entertainment. Books, posters, wallpaper and favorite possessions, unique to your taste, make a room a haven from the outside world.

2. Take a few moments every day to check in with yourself.

Try to schedule this time for a quiet period, when you can benefit most from solitude.

And let your family and friends know this is your time and that you’d appreciate their cooperation.

3. Try to discipline yourself to spend some time working on constructive projects.

If you are active when you’re alone, you’ll find that you are less likely to slip into the trap of loneliness.

So, close the door on the world for a while, and spend time reading, exercising or planning for upcoming activities.

If you have a special interest or hobby, now is a good time to work on it.

That applies to bridge. You always learn new things about the game, your style of play, your partnership preferences and so on.

In today’s deal, what would you have done differently during the bidding, and what should West lead against two hearts?

Some pairs might have passed out this deal. But it was certainly reasonable for South to bid one heart. (With so few points, open one heart, not one diamond.)

Then some modern players sitting West would have made a takeout double, but I still think this would have been highly debatable with 4-3-3-3 distribution (especially with so few points). North’s two-heart rebid was excessively cautious.

With 10 high-card points, he should have rebid two no-trump.

Then South would have continued with a nonforcing three diamonds.

(With game-going values, South would have to bid something other than three of a red suit.)

And North probably would have passed, but might have invited game with four diamonds (although I would prefer to have the heart king and club ace).

Note that five diamonds is only slightly worse than the trump finesse and makes here.

Against two hearts, a computer program West led the spade ace.

Admittedly all leads were unpalatable, but a trump looks more normal. Not that anything mattered with hearts 3-3 and the diamond finesse working. Declarer was destined to win 11 tricks.
