O

n a cold, blustery Friday night at the end of a very rainy soccer game last week, my heart was warmed.

The winning team from Wheaton Academy was celebrating, and a defeated St. Charles East player was hanging his head in disappointment from the loss.

I noticed a Wheaton Academy player, Elias McCloud, break away from his joyful

teammates and walk across the field to the East player, Jasminko Dizdarevic, who was crouched onto the ground.

McCloud consoled Dizdarevic and hugged him tight, as other Wheaton Academy players joined them.

The players were all teammates on a club team, away from their school teams.

It showed me the true meaning of the words sports-

manship and teammate.

Preservation Bread and Wine to be featured on ‘Check, Please’

Episodes featuring Preservation Bread and Wine will air at 8 p.m. today, 4 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. The restaurant is at 513 S. Third St. in Geneva.

The restaurant’s owner, Lawrence Colburn, said he is looking forward to watching the show. He said those with the program were “incredibly complimentary of the restaurant and really interacted with our guests” during the filming.

Colburn said the restaurant strives to offer an experience some might think wouldn’t be offered in the area outside of Chicago, while also fitting into the dynamic of Third Street in downtown

State’s school report cards lacking PARCC results

R

eport cards for the state’s public schools and school districts are being released today, but educators in central Kane County doubt the data will be useful to parents.

“I don’t know that it’s providing us or the community with a whole lot of information,” said Andy Barrett, assistant superintendent for learning and teaching at Geneva School District 304.

“There’s very little information that we don’t already know.”

Barrett said the information offered at www.illinoisreportcard.com includes statistics school districts are required to maintain – such as class size, student enrollment and financial figures – as well as outdated test results.

Historically, the report cards have included updated information about student performance on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test and the Prairie State Achievement Examination – tests that were replaced last year with the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC. Although the Illinois State Board of Education has released preliminary statewide

“The 2015 PARCC scores are taking additional time to produce as Illinois educators and their colleagues review students’ work to determine the performance level threshold scores,” according to an ISBE news release.

St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said the report card is designed to communicate information to stakeholders. In District 303, he said, the No. 1 stakeholders are parents, who want to know how their child and their child’s school did academically.

“It’s failing at its No. 1

goal, which is to communicate,” Schlomann said. “It really doesn’t communicate any information meaningful to parents.”

When PARCC results are released – which could be as early as December and as late as February, Schlomann said – it will provide a new baseline for measuring student progress and won’t be compa-

rable to past ISAT and PSAE scores.

“It’s kind of like comparing peas and carrots,” Schlomann said.

Waiting months for the test results is frustrating for educators, who devote instructional time administering an exam that is supposed to provide useful information to teachers, said Brad Newkirk, chief academic officer for Batavia School District 101.

Because of Batavia High School’s block schedule, he said, students underwent PARCC testing even earlier than other students.

“We’ve gone through a whole year of no results,” Newkirk said.

Barrett said the situation highlights a rising concern about testing. He said it’s understandable because the state requires schools to administer PARCC, yet the results are not available to help schools.

Even if the scores were released today, he said, the students who took the test now are in another grade and have covered “months and months” of material.

“How does this help you make instructional decisions for kids?” Barrett asked. “We have other systems in place to help us make important instructional decisions for kids.”

Water flow testing begins in Geneva KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva Fire Department is expected to begin water flow testing Friday, according to a city news release.

The tests, which are conducted on fire hydrants, will

be between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., primarily on the city’s west side, the release stated.

It indicated those living in the following areas might experience rusty water during or immediately after the testing Friday, Monday and Tuesday – west of Randall Road; Fairway Circle;

Bent Tree Drive; Seventh and State streets; and, on the east side, School Street and Woodward Avenue.

The water is safe to drink, but the city encourages residents to let their faucets run for a few minutes if they notice discoloration.

The city also cautions res-

idents from doing laundry until the water is clear. If rusty water discolors clothing, keep the laundry wet and call the Geneva Public Works Department at 630232-1501 to request a rust removing solution packet, according to the release.

The testing provides in-

formation to the city’s fire and water departments about water supplies available to firefighters and where infrastructure upgrades might be needed, the release stated.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police will be out in force through Sunday conducting DUI and seat belt enforcement, according to a news release.

St. Charles police will continue its support of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program with this latest round of enforcement, which begins today and will continue through the weekend, the release stated.

On the night of Halloween between 2009 and 2013, 119 people were killed by drunken driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Over those five Halloween nights, 43 percent of all motor vehicle deaths involved drunken driving, according to the administration.

The objective of the enforcement program is to reduce the number of car crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities through increased, highly visible enforcement. Police will focus on

occupant restraint, impaired driving, speeding and pedestrian safety, according to the release.

Police remind motorists and passengers it only takes a second or two to fasten a seat belt. Motorists who do not fasten their seat belts over the holiday period run the risk of receiving a ticket, the news release said.

Seat belt use is the most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The goals of the program are to reduce the number of severe injury and fatal traffic crashes, to achieve a higher use of safety belts, child safety seats and booster seats and to achieve a lower incidence of impaired driving-related injuries and fatalities.

Research has shown when lap and shoulder belts are properly used, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.

Bond set for 2 men in attempted St. Charles burglary

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Three Florida residents charged in connection to a St. Charles burglary attempt remained in Kane County custody Thursday after their initial court appearances.

The bond for Harris Andrew Howard, 22, of Miramar, Florida, was set at $60,000, according to court records. The bond for Enrico Nelson, 19, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was set at $50,000, according to the records.

A 16-year-old Fort Lauderdale boy also charged

in the attempted burglary made a brief appearance in Kane County juvenile court Thursday.

Judge Linda Abrahamson decided to postpone the hearing because as Harris of Thursday afternoon, the Howard 16-year-old’s mother still was en route to Kane County from Florida.

Howard, Nelson and the teen each were charged with one count of attempted burglary from a motor vehicle, a Class 3 felony, the release

states.

The three were in a vehicle that fled from police and later was involved in a rollover crash and fire at Route 59 and Stearns Road in Bartlett.

Nelson and the 16-year-old required assistance in exiting the vehicle, according to the release. After being released from the hospital, they were detained by St. Charles police for further investigation.

The 16-year-old on Thursday wore a neck brace over his jail uniform. When Abra-

hamson asked the teen whether he was feeling OK, the teen replied “yes.”

The third occupant of the car, later identified as Howard, was taken into custody after fleeing on foot and transported to the St. Charles Police Department, police said.

While investigating the incident, police recovered several items connected to previously reported motor vehicle burglaries in and out of Illinois, police said.

The next court date for both Howard and Nelson is scheduled for Nov. 12, according to court records.

ELBURN –The Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s potential purchase of land on Route 47 in Elburn remains on hold.

No action was taken Thursday at the district’s land acquisition committee meeting regarding the property at 1001 S. Main St. in Elburn, Kane County Board members said.

Members of the Kane County Board serve as forest preserve district commissioners.

Officials from the district have been discussing the potentially buying the property to use as a new home for the

district’s Natural Resources Department. Because part of the 18-acre property is in Elburn’s village limits, Elburn’s Village Board must approve the purchase. Elburn trustees initially rejected the plan, but village leaders were more receptive to it after business owner Ralph Helm said he would intend to buy part of the land to open a Ralph Helm Lawn Equipment Center there.

Kane County Board member Drew Frasz said Thursday forest preserve district commissioners wanted additional information to be gathered. He could not say more about what was talked about, he said, because the discussions took place in executive session, which is closed to the public.

Frasz initially supported the purchase, but he said that changed after Elburn officials voted against it. He since has been touting a different location, south of Elburn, which Frasz said is much less expen-

Two areas where work of Congress is incomplete

Pardon my confusion, but a glimmer of intelligent life in Washington has me questioning whether it’s 2015. The source of this bewilderment is that the U.S. Congress has managed to accomplish a few things: • A budget deal was reached, and a damaging government shutdown was averted. The deal entails a modest increase in spending of $80 billion over two years.

• Washington seems to have resolved its debt ceiling issues through spring 2017.

• A “voluntary” government default has been avoided.

• Spending caps on Medicare increases were negotiated and approved.

• Partisan gridlock has been broken – at least for now.

Of course, there are always political reasons for anything that gets done in our nation’s capital. The U.S. presidential elections are one year away. Jockeying for advantage meant doing the people’s work, even if by accident.

Some are going so far as to say that the age of austerity is now over.

At best, that seems like a premature conclusion. And it’s probably too early to declare the death of partisan gridlock.

Regardless, we all have a wish list of things we want and hope our elected representatives will get accomplished.

One area often discussed is infrastructure, in particular the U.S.’s decaying roads and bridges, and how regular maintenance should be paid for via the gas tax, which isn’t a tax so much as a user fee.

The second is how we finance our national debt.

Both of these issues start with the exact same premise: There is no free lunch. Like any country, the U.S. has basic needs, and these needs cost money.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Let’s take road maintenance as an example. We build roads to move people and goods around the country. All of this infrastructure requires regular maintenance.

Without maintenance, these structures last a fraction of the time they would with regular paint and repairs. Over time, they crumble and become a drag on economic efficiency.

That all of the above needs to be spelled out says something pretty awful about those in charge of seeing that our infrastructure performs as intended.

We pay for road maintenance through the Highway Trust Fund.

At 18.4 cents a gallon, the fuel tax has been unchanged since 1993.

With gasoline near six-year lows, drivers can easily afford an increase. They can either spare an extra dime at the pump, with regular increases to account for inflation, or they can spend much more in repairs that crumbling roads will eventually cause to their vehicles.

A less visible but much bigger issue is the $18 trillion federal debt.

It’s carried with a relative short duration, meaning the cost of that debt could rise a lot if interest rates shoot up. One solution, used by other nations with elevated but manageable debt levels, would be to embrace a 50-year Treasury bond.

It’s really something the U.S. should consider now. A 50-year bond would allow a refinancing of America’s long-term debts at today’s low rates. This would keep the costs of carrying existing debt as low as possible. It shouldn’t cause additional deficit spending; if anything, it would reduce total interest expenses, now almost a quarter of federal spending.

For the first time in almost a decade, Congress has started to do its job. Let’s hope it can take care of the work that still needs to be done.

To the Editor: On occasion, I see letters written to the editors of various newspapers in the Chicago area that contain quotes from America’s founding fathers that seem to go against what we were all taught about them in school as we grew up – at least, those of us who are now approaching – or are already in – our senior years. One such quote I saw used recently was this one from John Adams: “Twenty times in the course of my late readings have I been at the point of breaking out, ‘This would be the best of all worlds if there were no religion in it.’ ” I’ve been reading David McCoullough’s book on Adams, and it just didn’t sound like something he, of all people, would say. A quick search yielded the answer: He, in fact, DID say just that, but ... .

It came from a letter to Thomas Jefferson, and he (Adams) is telling Jefferson about a specific period in his youth, around 12 years of age, when he had as a pastor – a fellow by the name of Lemuer Bryant – and a Latin schoolmaster by the name of Joseph Cleverly. These two were, as Adams explained, constantly arguing about religion and politics, and he (Adams) was getting tired of hearing it go on and on.

With that little bit of extra information as background, here then is the entire quote: “Twenty times in the course of my late reading have I been

I ask you, then, why do you suppose anyone today would use that quote in its abbreviated form when the rest of it explains how the first part is no more than a statement of frustration? Other than a contempt for religion, what could possibly be going on in their minds?

Even when the atmosphere bordered on deafening for higher seed turned visitor St. Charles North, North coach Lindsey Hawkins hardly fretted.

Simply glancing at a senior core led by Sam Lappin, Claire Anderson, Jaclyn Taylor and Daley Krage long as eased Hawkins, who now has a few more happy photos with the group after the North Stars’ 20-25, 25-13, 25-20 victory.

Before convening with her teammates to slap hands for a customary post-point celebration, Anderson pounded the ground in ecstasy.

“You have to ride high on those emotions, because that’s basically the momentum you have for the game,” she said.

The Warriors raced to a 10-4 lead in the third set, with successive aces from Laura Severance helping keep the advantage afloat.

Krage responded with a kill as Taylor (38 assists) kept the offense churning, but Waubonsie Valley still boasted temporary, alliterative trump cards in Caroline Cordes (10 kills) and Brooke Burling (nine).

Warriors coach Kristen Didier ultimately conceded North’s “very smart” attackers “were able to find any holes in our defense they could.”

North’s block, however, dialed up considerably in the second set and proved just as vital in turning the tide.

“We watch how they hit at first and then we go out there and we know what we have to do,” DuVall said. “You just have to communicate with your outsides and know who you’re blocking against.”

Lappin (14 digs) was equally nimble, helping North advance to sectionals for the first time since 2013.

Naperville North stuns Geneva

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – When Geneva took the floor against Naperville North Thursday night, it looked to be in position to cruise to a victory.

But the Huskies had something to say about that. After falling in the first set, Naperville North won the following two to upset Geneva, 16-25, 25-23, 25-23, to win the Class 4A Plainfield North Regional girls volleyball title.

The Vikings (32-4) got off to a fast start, thanks in large part to Grace Loberg. The Wisconsin-bound outside hitter finished the match with 17 kills, eight of which came in the first set.

Naperville North, the No. 13 seed in the East Aurora Sectional, advances to play St. Charles North, the Waubonsie Valley Regional champions, on Tuesday.

After the first set, Loberg was able to find her offense in spurts, but the Huskies (27-10) put 5-foot-11 setter Jen Dore at the net against the 6-foot-2 Loberg, which proved valuable as the Huskies took their second regional title in three years.

But Geneva still seemed to be in control after winning the first set. Scoring the first four points of the second set, the Vikings were cruising before Naperville North snapped off separate streaks of winning

seven of nine points and eight of the last 11 to win the second set.

“It was nice that we had a big lead at the beginning because they fought back really tough,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “We broke down a bit mentally in the second set and once that mental game goes, the fundamentals start to go with it. Everything kind of got out of system and that carried over into the third set. There was a lot of tenacity in that third set, and it’s unfortunate that a play here or there didn’t go our way.”

Geneva was forced to call it quits much earlier than many anticipated from the sectional’s No. 3 seed. But what still appeared to be a shocked Vikings group after the game knew that a loss Thursday

night shouldn’t put a complete damper on the season Accolades included winning both the Lyons Township Invite right before the postseason as well as, ironically, the Plainfield North Invite early in the season – in a gym that proved to be where this group would play its final match of the season.

But losing four matches of 37 in a season is something to remember. Despite one of those losses being an ill-timed defeat Thursday night, the season as a whole was a success, Geneva feels.

With the likes of Loberg, the UConn-bound Ally Barrett, Ally Mullen, libero Payton Bellano and setter Mikayla Lanasa back next season, the Vikings will once again be a threat in the future.

Saints hang tough, but fall at home

The Saints watched the Wildcats earn a 25-19, 22-25, 2519 victory, ending their season by winning on their floor for the second time in a month.

“It’s hard to contemplate that four years are over,” Macklin said. “We didn’t want

this to be our last game.”

The Saints seemed to be in the driver’s seat after taking six of the last nine points of the second set after the two teams were knotted at 19. That tied the match at one set apiece, as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” blared over the gym PA system as an inspired Saints squad sang in their huddle and then took the court sharing high-fives in mid-air.

However, the Wildcats (298) ultimately were the ones singing a happy tune after the first 28 points of the third set when they held a 20-8 lead.

A big block for a point by

senior Riley Schumacher turned the tide and the Saints (24-13) scored eight of the next nine points, “I am extremely proud of how our girls fought,” Saints coach Jennie Kull said. “We were down and we came back.”

However, mistakes doomed the home team. The Saints also made several service errors in the match.

“We knew we had to serve aggressively to get them out of their game,” Kull said.

Kyla Augustine led the Saints with three kills in the first set, but it was a not enough as the Wildcats took

the opener Augustine and Schumacher led the Saints with seven kills each for the match.

Saints libero Alexis Jett was all over the court during the match, recording 18 digs.

Morgan Kull and Kyra Slavik set the table for teammates, recording 15 and 10 assists, respectively.

Macklin sparked the Saints in one last, late run, with two kills and a block for a point, recording the squad’s final three points of the match.

Macklin said she will deeply miss Kull, the coach she has had for the past seven years.

The Kaneland hitter helped the Knights rally early on in the second set with a handful of kills, but it wasn’t enough as the Knights fell to Sterling 25-13, 25-19 in the Class 3A Plano Regional title match.

Sterling junior Kaylee Martin, a Northern Illinois commit, had 12 kills and six digs, while fellow hitter Jay Borum added 12 kills and eight digs.

“We really couldn’t pick who to defend,” Weber said.

“They came out swinging, and I think we underestimated them. I don’t remember them being able to hit like that the last time we played. They

were on it today.”

Kaneland (20-14-1) never held a lead in the first set, but displayed grit in the second.

The Knights opened on a 4-0 run, and pushed their lead to 7-2. But the lead evaporated quickly once Sterling’s Jamy Trancoso began serving.

Trancoso is the Warriors’ most reliable server, and she rattled off nine consecutive points to give Sterling a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“I told the kids to focus,” Sterling coach Dale Dykeman said of his conversation with his team after the first game.

“I knew Kaneland wouldn’t just lie down. We’ve seen them battle back before. That’s a good team.

“We just had to relax and start playing our game.”

Kaneland never got the deficit closer than three points after Sterling’s nine-point run.

Sterling heads to the Sycamore Sectional semifinal match at 7 p.m. Tuesday, where it will face Rockford Boylan, a 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 winner over Burlington Central in the Boylan Regional final.

Royals adjust in second set and advance to sectionals

The Royals still found a way to win, though.

It was a wild but extremely successful night for Rosary, which fought off a pesky Knights squad, 25-22, 28-26, to advance to the Glenbard South Sectional next Tuesday.

“We made some adjustments, and when you don’t have big middles like Rosary you have to figure some things out and it took us a little while,” Knights coach Nancy D’Amore said. “I think that once we started to get our hands on the ball and were putting balls back that we got in their heads a little bit.”

Eventually, they made an adjustment, and fortunately they did so just in enough time as they were a point away from losing the second set, at 24-19, but answered with a 5-0 run to tie the score at 24-24.

“We didn’t want to lose,” Hart, a St. Charles resident, said. “We all really wanted to win so we just kept fighting.

Knights’ confidence key to surge

Kaneland, bumped up to Class 6A after recent playoff successes in 5A, is confident its postseason return to Peter- Jake son won’t be a Marczuk “foiled present” as it prepares for a first-round visit from the Blue Thunder.

To be sure, the Knights have developed a silent swagger en route to a 6-3 regular season that concluded with successive wins against Morris, La Salle-Peru and Ro-

“We know that stuff’s going to go wrong once in awhile,” Kaneland senior quarterback Jake Marczuk said. “We just keep our heads up, because we know we all have great athleticism, and we all believe in each other that the next drive or even the next play, we can go in and make a big play. … We’ve just learned to keep our heads up and fight through everything.”

Marczuk and other veteran teammates conceded feelings of guilt for letting coaches down when the program missed the playoffs in

2014 after a 4-5 regular season.

Before last fall, Kaneland had played past Week 9 in every season but one since 1995.

Such a streak planted plenty of visions in Marczuk’s growing mind. As the Knights’ spread offense gained prominence under longtime assistant turned head coach Tom Fedderly, Marczuk admired such recent predecessors as Joe Camiliere and Drew David.

“It started with Joe. Just watching him and watching how everyone went crazy,” Marczuk said. “And then Drew. The same thing happened. … And I just wanted to be that guy. That’s who I looked up to.”

Kemp, who grew his hair out this year, instantly earned the nickname “Thor” from coach Rob Wicinski when he joined teammates in dyeing

Kemp’s new ’do notwithstanding, couldn’t most any Geneva player go by that alias given Thor’s ties to Norse mythology as the god of thunder?

Consider that food for thought before tonight’s kickoff against Oswego East in Class 7A. As for Kemp: “I’ve kind of always had long hair,” he said, “but this year, it’s longer than usual.”

How come?

“I just think it looks good,” Kemp said. ’Dogs better under stress: After falling to Naperville Central in Week 6, Batavia’s only loss of the regular season, coach Dennis Piron thought the team came out a little “starry-eyed” before scrambling to find its usual tempo in the midseason nonconference game.

But Piron learned something specific about his team after the loss, and it’s something he won’t have to worry

about any longer.

“These players play so much better in stressful situations,” Piron said. “They like when things are at stake.

There’s no needing to tell them what’s at stake starting now. This is when it really matters, and I think every game will be stressful from here on out, so we’re excited about getting the best from our guys in every game moving forward.”

With Pekin traveling nearly three hours to Batavia tonight in Class 7A, Piron knows that if a team makes the playoffs, it can beat any team. So there has been no looking ahead to what could be, with all emphasis on taking care of business tonight.

“Wins and losses don’t matter at this point,” Piron said.

“Anybody can beat anybody when you get in these postseason games. We feel like our practices have been sensational, and now it’s time to put everything we’ve worked on together for one run here.”

The Vikings are happy to be at home, playing in front of their friends, families and community, but Oswego East doesn’t appear to be shying away from the road test. Wicinski said his offense will have to limit mistakes, while the defense can ill-afford to give up the big play.

“This is like a third round playoff game feel,” Wicinski said. “I was really surprised to see how good their defense is.

Our defense is going to have to be exceptional because I don’t see a ton of points being scored against their defense. They may have two of the best linebackers we have seen all year.

“Offensively, they have a very good quarterback that can make plays and flicks a nice ball. With the skill they have on the perimeter, I’m sure they will try to attack us deep, and we need to make sure to not give up very many big plays. So

overall, they are going to give us a handful.”

Extra point: Geneva quarterback Sean Chambers will be without his top wide receiver in senior Jack Wassel (24 catches, 351 yards, 6 touchdowns) due to team disciplinary reasons.

This will be the third game that the Vikings are without the Minnesota baseball commit.

The skinny: Pekin presents an interesting matchup, albeit a much more favorable one than last year’s opening playoff draw for the Bulldogs. After being ousted by Mt. Carmel in the first round in 2014, Batavia has played all season with the revenge factor of not only making up for that loss, but doing so by making a statement.

Batavia took care of Streamwood last week to wrap up its fifth straight conference title, but now the focus is shifted to the Dragons. With a one-point win over Limestone last week, Pekin earned a spot in the playoffs and will make the trip to Batavia tonight.

Although Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron knows his team is

not just in this contest, but the entire postseason.

“Every turnover takes away a possession from you, and gives another one to the other team,” Piron said. “You have to value the football in the playoffs.

Every possession doesn’t have to end in a touchdown, but if it improves your field position, that can be crucial.”

Piron expects a Pekin team to come out with a clean, fundamental football game and a balanced offensive attack.

The Dragons come to Batavia after playing in the Mid-Illini Conference, where Piron says they play “in one of those small communities where playing under the Friday night lights is a big deal. They have pride in how they play, and we expect to get everything they have.”

The only small worry Piron has

is the field conditions for tonight’s game, given the amount of rain in the area this week.

Extra point: Canaan Coffey set a school record with 63 receptions in the regular season, while Derek Nutley became the school’s all-time sacks leader.

The skinny: There is not a worse game for Geneva’s Rob Wicinski to coach than the first playoff game.

“Give me any game during the season, or any game after this one, but things become high-strung in these first-round games,” Wicinski said.

Wicinski knows his team will have its hands full against an Oswego East team that he is honestly “surprised that they

The marquee matchup North’s offensive line against the Benet defensive line will be something to look at. Benet coach Pat New feels like his team has seen a couple of similar quarterbacks to North’s Zach Mettetal this season in the East Suburban Catholic

Conference, so he thinks his team will be ready to go.

Mettetal, a dual-threat quarterback, has made plays with his feet all season when the pocket breaks down, finding the likes of Jayson Reckards, Griffin Hammer and his twin brother, Tyler, for big plays. Containing Zach Mettetal will be a primary focus for the Benet defense.

If North’s offensive line can give Zach Mettetal time to throw the ball, and if the junior signal-caller can make a few key plays with his feet, the North Stars like their chances.

“We know they are going to get their yards. … They have a good offense,” New said. “It’s about limiting (Mettetal) from making big plays and trying to keep him contained the best we can. He’s a good player and I think he’ll make things difficult at times for us.”

The X-factor Turnovers. It can be a key in any game, but when these two teams have turned the ball over, they haven’t had a ton of success. “If the weather turns out what the forecast looks like, I think the turnover battle becomes that much more important,” Pomazak said. “It’s always important to win the turnover battle, but when you get into these elimination games, it’s huge.”

Best case-scenario for the Redwings New wants to see two main things from his team: protecting the ball and limiting the big plays defensively. He feels if his team does those two things, it will have success. The 12th-year head coach has reached the semifinals of Class 7A, in 2012, but the Redwings have bowed out of the postseason in the first round in each of the last two seasons.

Running backs Marty Dosen and Alec McEachern, who also is one of the Redwings’ top defensive backs, will look to make life difficult defensively for the North Stars. North’s offensive tempo will not be a problem for Benet, as New also

Best case-scenario for the North Stars Get off to a fast start, but remember, if you punt, it’s not the end of the world.

Benet quarterback Jack Sznajder will make enough plays for his offense, and the Redwings’ size will impose its will enough to contain Zach Mettetal. I expect North to find some big plays, but not enough to keep its season alive. Benet’s standout kicker, Ryley Guay, will make a field goal to seal the deal late.

Reflecting on past Halloween costumes Retirement has brought many good times and delights, such as sleeping past the snooze alarm and spending rush hour at home sipping a cup of tea.

As the years go on, the life of leisure has become fairly routine, and it is not often one finds a fresh reason to be satisfied. Yet – as Halloween approaches – there is something new to appreciate in these golden years: no need to select a costume for trick-or-treating or those happy days at Evan Shelby grade school when we paraded around in our homegrown outfits.

The first thing that popped into this already stretched memory is how obsolete and – moreover – incorrect our costumes were.

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry ber the year I went as a big game hunter? The outfit consisted of an essential piece – my Hawley Products hat, the trooper/trapper version. There might have been a fake rifle except, even then, probably not.

The stuffed-critter accessory might have been a lion or tiger, which today would reflect on the scrutinized dentist and the unfortunate Cecil.

Then there was the year I dressed in white and made a cardboard cap and blue cape and was ready to step into the future as a nurse.

When is the last time you saw a nurse dressed in

white? Today’s version is more likely to wear a Winnie the Pooh scrub-suit top, right? Looking for a white uniform? Try the school cafeteria or the cosmetologist at the department store.

Sooner or later there was the cowboy outfit. My version consisted of the souvenir hat from a trip to Arizona by way of Texas; my dad’s big, red handkerchief worn Roy Rogers style; and – in keeping with Gene Autry or Hopalong Cassidy – some cattle-roping gear borrowed from the recently down-for-the-winter clothesline.

Rotary clubs unite for ‘Give the Gift of Literacy’ book fair KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Local chapters of Rotary International came out Oct. 17 to give the gift of literacy to children in the Fox Valley.

The St. Charles Breakfast and Noon Rotary clubs, as well as the Batavia and Geneva Rotary clubs, joined forces to host the “Give the Gift of Literacy” book fair.

The project was created to assist the Rotary groups in buying books for local organizations.

According to Kimberly Luthin, community business development manager for Barnes and Noble in Geneva, a percentage of book sales Oct. 17 went toward a gift card the Rotary groups plan to use to buy books.

Organizations in the Fox Valley will benefit from the book purchases, a news re-

lease stated.

Each Rotary group gave Barnes and Noble a list of books geared toward specific needs.

The recipient organizations will be Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project, the Illinois Youth Center, Lazarus House, CASA Kane County, Batavia Apartments and Two Rivers Head Start.

“Many studies show there is a strong connection between reading skills and academic success. It is crucial that these kids have access to books at a young age,” said David Hood, co-chair of the “Give the Give of Literacy” committee, in the release.

But the event wasn’t just all about books. It also was a day of fun for families, according to the release.

Michael Bazan, music team leader from Wredling Middle School in St. Charles,

organized performances by band students. Rotary volunteers planned fall-inspired crafts. And a magician entertained a group of children, while storytellers filled the day with stories.

Work on the book project began in January, when the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary Club wanted to do something in the Fox Valley to honor Rotary International’s 2015 focus on education and literacy.

Tom Tarvis, president of the St. Charles Breakfast Rotary, along with Hood and fellow “Give the Give of Literacy” committee co-chair Becky McCabe, approached Barnes and Noble, and the book fair became a reality.

Keeping with Rotary’s’ mission of serving others above self, they invited other Rotary groups in the area to participate.

Note, please, my Stan Laurel – a.k.a. Mister Z – is not so amusing these days. He recently took a head-first fall and broke his

nose and his jaw. Forget his trick-or-treat candy – it’s soup through a straw this year.

Now that I am back home from the miseries of “rest” home, I replace a key element of suffering with a TV that has a very poor selection – no Big Ten channel or CNN; and, now it seems merciful, no CNBC and no daytime “Blue Bloods.”

So, it’s Go Badgers, beat Rutgers! (Rutgers?) And Tom Selleck for president.

Don’t forget to turn back those clocks. I just did.

Community members attend D-304 technology forum KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – More than 200 people attended a public forum Tuesday hosted by the Geneva School District 304 Board, a news release from the school district stated.

Students and staff from kindergarten to 12th grade showcased how they are using technology to meet instructional goals and develop the skills students need for the jobs of tomorrow.

“We really wanted to inform our community members about how their investments in technology are being used,” said board President Mark Grosso in the release. “The many students and teachers here tonight are very excited to share what they are learning.”

Geneva technology director Mike Wilkes said the district’s technology initiatives directly support the

district’s vision of developing self-directed, lifelong learners; effective communicators; complex, creative and adaptive thinkers; and collaborative and productive citizens.

“Technology gives students real audiences and allows them to solve real-world problems,” Wilkes said in the release.

Attendees had the opportunity to speak with dozens of students and teachers and see firsthand what they do with technology in the classroom.

“Helping our students learn how to navigate various technologies is essential to preparing our students for success in the 21st century,” Superintendent Kent Mutchler said in the release.

“We are happy that so many members of our community came to see how technology is enhancing our educational program.”

All behavior originates in the brain. Brain scientists have learned some interesting information about the biology behind IED. Here’s what we know so far: • Close relatives of people with IED appear to have a significantly elevated risk of IED. • The disorder appears to be associated with abnormal activity in parts of the brain that regulate and inhibit aggressive behavior.

The chemical messenger involved is serotonin.

• Impulsive aggression is associated with low serotonin activity. Such aggression is also linked to damage to the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is a center of judgment and self-control.

Significant violence should be treated as a medical problem, like chest pain. But people who have trouble resisting their violent impulses are not very likely to seek treatment.

A number of medications can help to reduce aggression and prevent rage outbursts. These include: • Antidepressants, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs); • Mood stabilizers (lithium and anti-seizure drugs); • Anti-psychotic drugs.

Another approach that looks promising for treating IED is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

This is a form of talk therapy that helps to reframe negative thoughts and change unwanted behavior.

Dear Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend and I dated steadily for two years while we were in high school. We have been living together since June of 2014 when we both graduated from high school. He was very popular, really cute and the football hero at our school so I was thrilled that he chose me to be his girlfriend. We had a few disagreements when we went together, but we always kissed and made up afterward.

Dear Dr. K: My son’s doctor thinks he might have intermittent explosive disorder. I know my son has a bad temper, but I was surprised to hear that it might be a “disorder.” Can you tell me more about this? What can I do to help my son?

Dear Reader: Under severe enough stress, any normally calm and collected person might become angry – and might even be provoked to the point of violence. But some people lose their temper easily and repeatedly. In these people, tension mounts until there is an explosive release.

This behavior pattern is called intermittent explosive disorder (IED).

People with IED respond with strong rage that is out of proportion to the situation. They may seriously harm people and property through violent words or actions.

A survey by the National Institute of Mental Health found that at any given time, 3 percent to 4 percent of people have the disorder. It also found that people with IED were often young; the disorder often starts in the early teens.

Most people in the survey identified with IED were male.

A quick aside: Although IED is typically diagnosed later, clearly some infants fly into a rage much more frequently than most infants. I am not aware of any study that has seen whether such infants go on to suffer from IED as adults, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I learned recently of a famous physicist whose rages were notorious. As a baby, his screaming rages were so extraordinary that his parents were forced to move several times because of complaints by the neighbors.

It is sometimes hard to tell the difference between IED and other disorders that feature impulsive, aggressive behavior. Examples of such disorders include personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety

This week, we have been looking at the deals when a defender should, or should not, overruff declarer. The general principles are fine, but sometimes a defender will have to guess. In this deal, for example, South is in four spades. West leads the heart 10. East wins with his queen, cashes the heart ace, and continues with the heart king.

After South ruffs with the spade jack, what should West do?

South’s rebid of two spades guaranteed at least a six-card suit. With, say, 5-2-4-2 distribution and the same honor cards, South would have passed over East’s intervening two-heart bid.

North would have had another chance to continue his hand description.

Should West overruff? If South started with A-K-J-7-2 of spades and East with 10-8-6, West would have to overruff to gain the defenders two trump tricks.

However, the general principle is to overruff with tripleton queen-low-low unless partner rates to be short in the suit.

Here, South has shown at least a six-card suit in the auction. West should discard. Then the contract must fail. But note that if West overruffs and, say, shifts to a diamond, declarer wins in the dummy, plays a trump to his 10, cashes the ace, and claims.
