St. Charles school jazz band teams with dance group, orchestra KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The Thompson Middle School Jazz Ensemble will be part of an event on Saturday that will offer swing dance lessons and live music.

The Thompson jazz students will take part in an authentic swing dance with the Tri-City Swing dance group and Shout Section Big Band, a professional jazz orchestra based in Brookfield and Chicago, according to a news release.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St. in St. Charles.

Tri-City Swing will start out teaching dance lessons to the jazz students and anyone who wishes to attend. Then the students will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in their jazz ensemble while the TriCity Swing members dance to their music, the release states. Finally, Shout Section Big Band will play a full show starting at 8 p.m.

Any student can participate in the dance lessons and concert for $5 with their school ID, the release states.

All others will be charged a $10 admission.

Juvenile offenders to be judged by their peers Kane County Sheriff’s Office kicks off program ST. CHARLES – Juvenile offenders charged with a non-violent crime will now have the chance to be judged by a jury of his or her peers while avoiding the court system.

“This is a huge help for us,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said, in explaining the program to a group of students and others on Wednesday during a kickoff event. “You help them get back on track. We want you to get to understand the people before you.

We don’t want you to judge them. They are good kids who made a mistake.”

As Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Laura Maglio explained, peer jury is designed for only non-violent, non-serious crimes.

Minors who would go to peer jury instead of the court system must admit what

they have done and agree to complete what the peer jury assigns to them. If the minor doesn’t complete the assignment, their case will be referred to Juvenile Court Services.

That assignment could include having to write a letter of apology to the victim, or community service, Maglio said.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva and Food for Greater Elgin for community service projects for those going through the peer jury program, she said.

Maglio herself was a peer juror at Lake Park High School in Roselle.

During Wednesday’s kickoff event, Maglio played the part of a high school student who was brought before a peer jury after stealing a cell phone from a fellow student.

The students must submit an application and interview to be on the jury. Students cannot have any prior criminal activity.

Right now, Burlington Central High School is the only school participating in the Kane County Sheriff’s peer jury. Aurora and Elgin also have similar programs.

But Maglio hopes other school districts will join in the program, as well. The first peer jury is set for Nov. 19.

“We need to spread awareness that we have this program,” Maglio said. “We want to make this available to all kids in Kane County.”

Just because decorative contacts can be purchased over-thecounter or on the Internet does not mean that they do not require the same level of care or consideration as a standard contact lens. The fact is that it is illegal to sell colored contact lenses without a prescription in this country, and there is no such thing as “one size fits all” contact lenses.

P.S. Non-prescription costume contacts can cause cuts and open sores on the surface of the eyes that can lead to potentially blinding and painful bacterial infections. These can require corneal transplants and even cause permanent vision loss.

SEEKING ANSWERS Residents talk fire referendum at forum

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com WASCO – The fire chiefs of two local districts on Wednesday took questions and shared information about a disconnect referendum during an informational forum that became, at times, heated.

Kelly Callaghan, the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District chief, joined Greg Benson, the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District chief, at that district’s Station 1 in Wasco. About 70 people, including firefighters and staff from the two fire districts, attended the event.

“This is not intended to urge you to vote one way or the other,” Benson said at the start of the forum, which lasted about 2½ hours. “It’s to provide information.”

About 3,000 voters are being asked in a Nov. 4 ballot measure whether they want to disconnect from Elburn’s fire district and move into Fox River and Countryside’s district.

Benson asked for there not to be personal attacks, but Campton Hills resident Monica DelMedico said this was a personal issue for her.

She lives in the area being petitioned for the disconnect.

DelMedico asked about Fox River and Countryside’s current debt of $4.4 million.

Benson said the district incurred the debt to expand.

He said the financial services company Standard & Poor’s has recognized the fire district will pay off 94 percent of the debt regardless of whether the referendum passes.

Campton Hills resident Mike Tyrrell asked Benson about tax rates. Benson would

not make any definitive statements regarding future tax rates, as they are based on the equalized assessed value of properties and other factors.

Benson also said there has been misinformation about the Fox River and Countryside district charging residents for its various services. Both Benson

and Callaghan each said that the only services they have charged for in recent years are EMS and spiller pays for hazardous materials.

St. Charles police to increase DUI, seat belt enforcement KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department will amp up traffic enforcement this weekend to coincide with Halloween, according to a department news release.

Officers will conduct the

enforcement – which will target seat belt and driving under the influence offenses – Friday through Sunday in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program – or STEP – aptly named “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

STEP aims to reduce the number of severe injury and fatal traffic crashes; to increase the use of seat belts, child safety seats and booster seats; and to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities related to impaired driving.

Fermilab seeking volunteers for harvest BATAVIA – The U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking volunteers to help with

its annual Prairie Seed Harvest.

A harvest event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and lunch will be provided.

Volunteers will help collect seeds from about 25 types of native plants. Some seeds will be used to replenish the Fermilab prairies, filling in gaps where some species are more dominant than others. Participants should bring gloves, a pair of hand clippers and paper grocery bags. DELORES M. JARKA Born: Dec. 17, 1933 Died: Oct. 28, 2014 Delores M. Jarka (nee Gahlbeck), age 80, of Geneva, died at home on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, following a long illness.

She was born on December 17, 1933, the daughter of Harry and Laura (nee Vogel) Gahlbeck. She was raised in Burlington, Illinois, and graduated from Burlington High School class of 1951. She started working early in life, detasseling corn in the nearby

fields. She went on to work at the Elgin Watch Factory, and eventually went to work at Warwick Publishing Company in St. Charles, where she remained for 28 years before retiring.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 40 years, Robert F. Jarka; and her only brother, Clifford Gahlbeck.

She is survived by her loving children, David of Buffalo, NY, Kathleen (William Duerr) of Batavia, Donald (Tammie) of Geneva, and Edward (Karyn) of Maple Park. She also had

six grandchildren that she was very proud of, Will and Joseph Duerr, Brad and Adam Jarka, and Rachel and Kyle Jarka.

BATAVIA – Batavia resident Carl Dinwiddie is accusing two Batavia school employees of violating election laws, saying they promoted the district’s $15 million referendum question, which is on the ballot for Tuesday’s election.

The referendum seeks to fund capital improvements throughout the district, including two synthetic turf fields at Batavia High School.

Dennis Piron, Batavia’s football coach, and Dave Andrews, the Batavia High School athletic director and assistant principal for operations, are named in the election complaint. Dinwiddie filed the complaint with Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham.

In the complaint, Dinwiddie said Piron used his title of football coach in an email sent in support of the referendum.

“Coach Piron cannot say it’s a personal email once he has identified himself as ‘Coach Piron’ and that he is ‘100 percent in support of a YES vote for the upcoming advisory question, and am hoping you are, as well,’ ” Dinwiddie said in the complaint. “Once he says this is from Coach Piron, he is now acting in his official capacity and cannot claim otherwise.”

Dinwiddie also contended a YouTube video made by Andrews and posted on the school district’s website, “is a clear promotion of a ‘yes’ vote without balanced information that would point out negatives, as well. In his video he is standing on the athletic field, with the bleachers in

Kane County Director of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock could not be reached for comment about Dinwiddie’s complaint.

If the referendum is approved, the district would issue up to $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund the projects. Batavia school board members recently decided the district will ask for two synthetic turf fields at Batavia High School as part of the referendum.

The project would install a synthetic turf field at Bulldog Stadium and add a second multi-use synthetic turf field.

The project carries an estimated $7.6 million price tag, including $4.7 million for the multi-use synthetic field. The $4.7 million price tag includes a $2.9 million underground stormwater detention system and $490,000 in sports field

Halloween Costume Contest.

Egghead is the bronze sculpture that sits upon a wall outside of the library.

Throughout the year, library employees photograph Egghead dressed in outfits related to holidays and current events, and then post the photos on the library website, Facebook page and Pinterest.

Through today, library visitors can vote for their favorite costume. Photographs of Egghead in costumes created by employees are on display at the library.

County Board members thwart coroner’s $140K budget adjustment

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board members sent a message to the coroner Wednesday that they are dissatisfied with his overspending.

“We have to hold the line, and so does he,” said Cristina Castro, D-Elgin.

Castro is among seven board members who sit on the Finance and Budget Committee, which declined to forward Coroner Rob Russell’s proposed $140,369 budget adjustment to the Executive Rob Russell Committee.

“They demonstrated their dissatisfaction and their disapproval (of the overspending),” County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said after the meeting.

The coroner is about 6.3 percent over budget in the office’s general fund for 2014, the bulk of which comes from autopsies, salaries and the cost of using the DuPage County morgue while equipment at the Kane County morgue is being replaced, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick said.

The Judicial and Public Safety Committee previously recommended approval of the adjustment for the overage.

The Finance and Budget Committee didn’t get a chance to discuss or vote on the proposal because the initial motion failed to garner a second.

“The silence is deafening,” Castro said.

Russell, who missed the meeting because of an obligation at the health department, said all the expenses were vetted, and he invited board members to contact him if they had any concerns. Nobody called him, he said, so he was under the impression there were no issues.

“I’m just as shocked as everybody else,” Russell said.

Referring to a similar overage situation last year, Russell said being over budget isn’t a matter of overspending. Rather, he said, it’s a matter of him running his office properly.

“We’re talking about the fact my current budget keeps getting compared to a broken budget,” he said.

Lauzen said the coroner agreed to his budget and listed expenses that could have been trimmed, such as a Las Vegas trip and buying Silly Putty and other promotional items for the office.

“We’ve got reasons for everything we do,” Russell said, explaining the Las Vegas trip was related to his office’s accreditation and provided training not offered elsewhere.

Although Russell’s budget adjustment didn’t proceed to the Executive Committee, that doesn’t mean bills will go unpaid.

“We’ll pay the bills,” Onzick said.

Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt said the county will continue to honor certain expenses immediately, such as salaries, fringe benefits, autopsies, toxicologies and DuPage County fees.

Other legitimate expenses incurred on the county’s behalf might be delayed because of pending County Board approval, Hunt said.

Several county officials said they haven’t encountered this situation before and were unsure whether Russell’s request could be revisited by another committee. Historically, board attorney Patrick Kinnally said, the process for such resolutions requires approval from the finance committee before moving forward.

With Wednesday’s actions, he said, “It just doesn’t go anywhere.”

GENEVA – The temporary files for all students in the Geneva High School Class of 2008 and Class of 2009 will be destroyed during the week of Nov. 3.

Temporary records are maintained for five years after graduation, transfer or permanent withdrawal from a school district, at which point they might be destroyed.

State law mandates a student’s record belongs to the student at age 18. Students who wish to pick up their file must do so in person and present a photo ID. Students may provide a parent with written permission and a photocopy of an ID for the file to be released. Records may

Firm shares results of community feedback in superintendent search SUGAR GROVE – Community feedback indicates that those in Kaneland School District 302 want the district’s next superintendent to be a strong and trustworthy leader, one who is visible in the community and will embrace the role as “the face of Kaneland.”

Officials from search firm BWP and Associates appeared at Monday’s school board meeting, sharing information gathered from research that is underway as the district continues its search for a new permanent superintendent. The information was gathered in meetings with representatives from groups at the school, as well as results from an online survey that was posted on the district’s website.

District 302 needs a new superintendent because previous Superintendent Jeff Schuler left early in the school year to become the superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200. Renee Goier is serving as the district’s interim superintendent.

Four BWP representatives gave an update on the search to the board at Monday’s meeting, in the quest to possibly have a new superintendent in place by Dec. 15. They said 305 people responded to the online survey, which representative Mark Friedman described as “not over the top and not under the bottom.”

The BWP officials said they learned that those in the district want a superintendent who can be courageous and

make tough decisions. They want someone with experience in the educational process.

One BWP representative, Patricia Wernet, said the phrase “the face of Kaneland” came up multiple times.

“They want that person to be out there,” she said.

Tony Valente, a member of the Kaneland board, said it was important to him that the next superintendent be someone who has “building-level managerial experience.”

“That is paramount, that a person has that experience,” Valente said.

Valente also said he might be reluctant to bring in someone who already is a superintendent at another district, because he would want to know “what would make a superintendent leave a district he’s already at.”

BWP representative Anne Noland said Kaneland has appeal as a large district that is in the northern part of the state. She said the fact that it is suburban would be important to some. Valente asked about “red flags,” about reasons a candidate might be “running to something or running from something.”

Friedman said red flags “are easy to find.” He added that “we’re not putting out a help-wanted ad for people wanting to leave for a negative reason.”

Friedman said there had been about 20 candidates so far, and he expected there would be more than 40 to consider. Officials have said the process will remain confidential until the final two candidates are announced.

Vanessa King, 26, is a student at Elgin Community College, with plans to start a career in art therapy. Talking with her today it’s hard to picture her at one time virtually bedridden for months because of severe anxiety.

“My life was definitely on hold,” she says.

King remembers missing a lot of school as a child because her anxiety led to frequent stomach aches and vomiting. This pattern subsided during her teen years, but the extreme anxiety returned. By 2008 she was suffering from a full-blown panic disorder with agoraphobia — intense fear that she would be stuck somewhere “unsafe” while having severe anxiety symptoms.

“During part of that year I didn’t go anywhere,” says King. “I was terrified of my symptoms.”

Symptoms of a panic attack might include an accelerated heart rate, lightheadedness, dizziness, faintness and nausea, says M. Joann Wright, Ph.D.,

Late in 2010 King was referred to the Linden Oaks Anxiety Program, which involves 3-1/2 hours of therapy daily, Monday through Friday, typically for about three weeks. Group and individual sessions use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help patients commit to pursuing what they want in their lives. They learn ways to accept and manage the symptoms that are getting in their way.

“ACT literally gave me my life back,” says King. “It’s in your face and encourages you to push your limits.

You see that feeling anxious is not going to kill you.”

King is now married and a full-time student. She also volunteers to share her story with current participants in the Linden Oaks Anxiety Program.

“I still have a few panic attacks but I don’t stop what I’m doing when that happens,” she says. “I just take some deep breaths and ride through it.”

Earlier this year Linden Oaks earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and Disease-Specific Certification for commitment to excellence in anxiety care.

Linden Oaks is the first healthcare organization in the country to receive such recognition.

CHARLES – Brass Bands International will have the 12th annual U.S. Open Brass Band Championships, hosted by the Prairie Brass Band, a brass band that draws members from the suburban area, according to a news release.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles.

The event is open to the public and features performances by six bands – Central Ohio Brass Band (Columbus, Ohio), Dublin Silver Band (Dublin, Ohio), Eastern Iowa Brass Band (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Fountain City Brass Band (Kansas City, Missouri), Madison Brass Band (Madison, Wisconsin) and Prairie Brass Band (Arlington Heights).

Halloween magic never truly fades Kindergarten. Clad in an angel costume, I marched around Coultrap Elementary School with my class, the childlike excitement of Halloween washing over me. Third grade. I wore a large Junior Mints costume, part of the candy theme my sisters and I had decided to pull off that year.

Sixth grade. Feeling witty and clever, I decorated a sheet with music notes and went with a punny “sheet music” outfit that got several approving chuckles from the neighbors.

Each year a little bit different ... but each year encompassing the same Halloween spirit I’ve grown to love.

For me, the best of part of Halloween always has been the candy. There never has been a time when I haven’t had a sweet tooth; I’ll never

turn down anything that has sugar as a main ingredient.

Especially when I was little, Halloween was my idea of heaven. I got to walk around my neighborhood and get free candy simply by ringing the doorbell and saying “trick-ortreat.” To this day, I still fondly recall the homes that gave me king size candy bars and Pez dispensers, which always made a welcome appearance in my lunchbox days later.

I remember going home after trick-or-treating and sorting all my candy, swapping with sisters for my favorites and promptly discarding the kinds I disliked. I also particularly enjoyed the fact that we got to celebrate Halloween at elementary school. The morning would drag on as I anticipated what was to come, with

New cupcake shop showcases sweet treats Smallcakes: A Cupcakery of St. Charles opened Sept. 12

Hinckley resident Tina Wackerlin and her husband, Eric, opened the franchise business on Sept. 12.

“I’ve always loved to bake,” Tina Wackerlin said. “If I had a choice of cooking a seven-course meal and seven different desserts, I’d pick the desserts.”

The St. Charles store is the second Smallcakes to open in Illinois. Jill Wackerlin-Watson, a cousin of Tina Wackerlin’s husband, opened a Smallcakes store in March at 115 E. Ogden Ave. in Naperville.

The cupcakes are made fresh daily.

Smallcakes offers 15 signature flavors, along with two different daily special flavors.

Cupcake lovers also might notice something different about the cupcakes at Smallcakes.

“They’re a larger cupcake than the normal-sized cupcake,” she said.

To fill the demand, Wackerlin and her other employees start baking at 5 or 6 a.m. and continue through early evening. The two most popular cupcakes at the store are the caramel crunch cupcake – chocolate cake with caramel frosting, topped with sea salt and pretzels – and the wedding cake cupcake, Wackerlin said.

“I like the caramel crunch cupcake as well,” she said. “I like caramel. The black tuxedo cupcake, which is almond frosting with chocolate cake, is also a good one.”

“It’s really light and fresh, even for a cupcake,” she said.

The store is trying to take advantage of the nightlife in downtown St. Charles by staying open later. Smallcakes is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“There is a lot of foot traffic in this area and a lot of restaurants behind us,” Wackerlin said. “People stop in

after they go to dinner, or to a sporting event. I feel if we weren’t open that late, that we’d be missing out on a lot of opportunities.”

The store offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Wackerlin also has catered different events.

She has an idea why cupcakes remain popular.

“A lot of people don’t want to order a whole cake, and cupcakes give you variety,” she said. “So, if you are having a party with 25 people, you can have different flavors, versus one flavor of a cake.”

Whittaker said she believes cupcakes also remain popular because of their nostalgia factor.

“They bring you back to your childhood,” Whittaker said. “They also bring people together. People try each other’s cupcakes all the time.”

That includes professionals working in offices, Wackerlin said.

“They will buy six or 12 for an office, and then they will all share them,”

she said. “They don’t stand around the office water cooler any more; they are standing over someone’s desk sampling all the different cupcakes,” she said.

Besides cupcakes, the store sells other treats, such as sugar cookies, fudge, brownies, cake pops, caramel apples and birthday cakes. In addition, it sells hot chocolate, coffee, pop, milk and water.

“The franchise only does cupcakes, but I added the treats,” Wackerlin said.

“Before we purchased the franchise, I asked if we could sell treats, because I wanted to sell cookies and pretzels and fudge and stuff like that. Not all the franchise stores do that.”

The store plans to make Christmas cookies for the upcoming holiday season and is gearing up for the Electric Light Parade that will march through downtown St. Charles on Saturday, Nov. 29.

What to buy Beguiling ($65) is 94 percent grenache and 6 percent syrah. The rounded out mouthfeel from the syrah adds a great texture, while there are loads of raspberry, strawberry and rhubarb on the mid-palate.

Sagacious ($65) has big ripe dark fruit flavors. The syrah adds a full body, savory texture and wild game notes.

Despite its robust fruit flavors, it is alluring and smooth. It is 44 percent granache, 42 percent syrah and 14 percent mourvedre.

Audacious ($65) is a Priorat blend grown in limestone above the calcareous soil line, which adds increased acidity. The star turn here is the cabernet sauvignon (20 percent), which provides cassis, tobacco and spice notes.

Ripe dark fruit notes follow. Grenache (44 percent) softens the mid-palate with strawberry notes. The syrah (20 percent) and petite syrah (10 percent) provide a solid frame.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library will present “Microcosm: A Journey into the Ocean Through a Microscope” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.

Educator and author Michele Hoffman-Trotter will share images, footage and stories about the microscopic world, which is the subject of her documentary film “Microcosm,” a 90-minute visual journey depicting the unseen ocean world.

Hoffman-Trotter joined researchers from the John G. Shedd Aquarium to study the microscopic world.

“Microcosm,” produced by Columbia College Chicago, is scheduled to be released in 2016, according to a news release.

During the presentation, participants will have the chance to look through microscopes to view the universe that exists within a single drop of water.

ianna Furrie recorded three bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine of her opening round at the IHSA Class AA girls golf state meet.

That stretch might sound blissful to a recreational player. To Furrie, it almost was cause for fuming.

The St. Charles North sophomore showed restraint instead, a pattern that ultimately cleared a path to a 13th-place tie the next More inside afternoon. “I knew that if I got real mad about it, I wouldn’t do good the second day at state, which is what I did last year,” Furrie said. “I didn’t really forget about it, but tried to remember the good things and then focused on the bad things to work on instead of getting mad about it again.”

Furrie shaved eight strokes from her two-day, 2013 score at Forsyth’s Hickory Point Golf Course, shooting a 13-over-par 157.

Catching up with coursework prompted her to miss some individual practice sessions last week, but that was the only thing standing in the way.

St. Charles North sophomore Gianna Furrie – the Kane County Chronicle Girls Golfer of the Year – finshed in a tie for 13th place in the IHSA Class AA girls golf state meet this season, shooting a 13-over-par 157. of the fall, Furrie returned for a lesson with swing coach Kiel Alderink at White Deer Run in Vernon Hills. She also gets plenty of swings in a 65-yard hitting area – complete with a bunker – in the family’s backyard. Royal Hawk Country Club is only a few minutes away for those times Furrie needs to work on her tee shots or long irons.

“She is a very, very competitive kid.

She wants to do her best all the time,” North Stars coach Irish Whalen said.

“She practices very hard. She’s very focused. She’s the kind of golfer that all coaches want. You don’t really have to direct her. She’s a constant competitor that always wants to get better.”

As was the case last season, Furrie enjoyed a classmate-turned-running mate near the top of the North leaderboard.

Eight Conference River Division meet and the Burlington Central Regional before finishing second at the Conant Sectional. Furrie and Kate Lillie maneuvered for top positioning at each meet.

Furrie went 76, 70, 74, to Lillie’s 79, 76, 69.

At state, Lillie finished nine shots behind Furrie as part of North’s 11thplace team finish.

“It’s a lot of fun to see them, how they play, and then trying to compete against one another,” North Stars senior Gabi Spinazze said. “It’s kind of fun.”

Furrie shot 33 three times during nine-hole events while averaging 15 putts a round. A growing comfort with herself and her role as a leader helped boost her confidence and her game.

“Last season, I either was hitting my irons really well, or I was putting really well,” Furrie said. “This year, it was both coming together. I was able to hit

the ball really well and my short game was good, too. So that really helped.”

Whalen, a former JV assistant at St. Charles East, had a pulse on the Furrie family line before taking the North job this season.

She was on the Saints’ staff when Furrie’s older sister, Ariana, starred at North, eventually paving the way to her current college career at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York.

Getting to know the player most teammates call “G,” has been a pleasure. Whalen is confident there’s much more enjoyment to come in 2015 and 2016.

“Gianna’s a very nice, funny, great kid,” Whalen said. “From what I can tell in my two months of knowing her, she isn’t at a place where she wants to stop. In the future, she wants to be competitive, as well. She hasn’t peaked.”

Niesel’s eagle at state caps Rockets senior’s 14th-place showing

F

ifty yards separated Burlington Central senior Austin Niesel from his ball and the pin on the par-4 14th hole at Normal’s Weibring Golf Club.

His father, Jim, held a camera as Niesel sized up his approach. His coach, Deb Twenhafel, worked to harness her emotions while standing nearby.

Bedlam soon gave way for everyone invested. Niesel dropped a 60-degree wedge about 20 feet from the hole, and it rolled in for eagle during the second round of the Class 2A state meet – the signature moment for the Kane County Chronicle Boys Golfer of the Year.

“I actually hit my mark and played it exactly the way I wanted,” Niesel said.

“It was just the perfect swing for the perfect time.”

Niesel paced the Rockets throughout the state series, with the eagle helping him finish with a two-day 154, tied for 14th individually.

He shot 75 at regionals at Marengo Ridge and 79 at sectionals at Stonewall Orchard in Grayslake.

“We knew we’d have a lot of depth,” Central coach Deb Twenhafel said, “and he was at the top of it.”

The stretch run featured a series of long putts – including three of more than 20 feet in his opening round at state – while also highlighting the shortness of Niesel’s memory.

It’s easy to bemoan the 80 he shot in the Big Northern Conference Meet at Timber Pointe now, but Niesel made sure not to dwell on it immediately thereafter. Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of why he chose golf full-time, anyway?

“I’ve always loved the game. It’s always been fun,” Niesel said. “It’s always relaxing, and I just love playing nice courses. It’s almost like art when you’re out there looking at a nice course and knowing a designer made it.”

Niesel began golfing at a young age, but decided to specialize in it around seventh grade, giving up baseball and football.

He began working with PGA professional Dan Kochevar at Oak Brook-based The Players Service regularly, making golf a year-round

Calling the past 2½ years “pretty serious golf for me,” Niesel formed a bond with 2013 Boys Golfer of the Year Matt Weber in the process. Weber, now an Indiana freshman, asked Niesel to caddy for him during a handful of his 2014 summer events, including the Illinois State Amateur and a U.S. Open qualifier.

“I’ll obviously keep in touch with him,” Niesel said. “He’s a good friend.”

Weber finished as 2A runner-up last season, sparking Central to a fourthplace team finish. The Rockets narrowly missed a team state berth this fall,

finishing one stroke behind Vernon Hills from the third and final qualifying spot from its sectional.

Sophomore Joe Sherman – Niesel’s downstate roommate in 2013 – roomed with him again this time after earning an individual spot via playoff.

Still, the Rockets fell short in their ultimate goal of delivering one final team state bid for Twenhafel, the longtime boys and girls coach who’ll retire at the end of the school year.

That’s why seeing “Twenny” celebrate his eagle meant even more.

“Just her excitement was unreal,” Niesel said. “She was just jumping around and it was pretty fun.”

“We knew that there were going to be opportunities,” Collins said. “We’re not going to hang our heads saying that’s going to be our only chance, because it wasn’t. We had already scored and we just knew that we were going to have other opportunities and wanted to finish on those.”

Gianfrancesco said the new formation hadn’t been used a lot in games this season, but he was pleased that his team responded to it well in a huge situation.

“It was a huge win,” Gianfrancesco said. “The boys pushed through. We kind of switched some stuff on them probably 12 to 14 minutes in on our formation. We kind of mentioned that we would. We saw some things with Benet with how they were playing and we definitely wanted to put more pressure on them up at the top.

Yunker’s 2nd goal of the year proves to be the game-winner

The senior midfielder elevated the Batavia boys soccer team to a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes remaining Wednesday night in its Class 3A Bolingbrook Sectional semifinal against Benet Academy.

On the game-winner in the Bulldogs’ eventual 3-1 victory, forward Kevin Collins dummied the ball to Yunker on a pass from midfielder Erik Faessler.

The slick maneuver gave Yunker the space he needed on the left side of the 18-yard box to dribble around a defender and beat Redwings goalkeeper Konrad Bayer near-post.

“We work on that all the time at practice; try to switch it across and play the dummy and then have that back post run open,” Yunker said. “It’s just touch and finish. It’s easy.”

The move paid off and gave Batavia its first lead of the night after trailing early. Seven minutes later, Collins iced the match with his second goal on the night, taking a ball over the top near the 50-yard line in for a breakaway finish.

The final goal, provided from Collins’ second score, allowed the Bulldogs to once more clear the three-goal requirement that the team has set as its standard all season.

“It just gives us confidence,” Collins said. “Benet’s a great team. We knew coming in that they were going to be a great team. We go down 1-0 and we really just had to bounce back. I’m more proud of my [teammates] than ever right now and can’t give them enough credit.”

The Bulldogs advanced to the sectional final against Naperville North at 1 p.m. Saturday. Batavia deployed a new formation, an attacking 3-4-3 that coach Mark Gianfrancesco implemented early in the

Piechota in another class for Catamounts

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber that her legacy at Western Carolina is more than just a few stat lines.

“I love that role. It’s a challenge I want to take on,” she said. “I knew that was going to happen, especially senior year and being asked to be captain.

I like being able to kind of set the tone for a game. I like the pressure, I like having the pressure on me in tough situations, to come through and lead my team to success.”

Piechota is studying elementary education, and when she’s not practicing or playing or racking up career milestones, she’s interning at Smoky Mountain Elementary, doing a different kind of leading in front of first-grade students rather than her teammates.

It wasn’t too long ago Piechota was a student at Batavia, learning her own important lessons that she’s applied ever since.

“Just a passion for the game. [Lori Trippi-Payne] was an amazing coach, and she inspired me to just play,” she said. “She knew I was a hard-headed kid, and she coached me to just kind of mellow out and play the game and love the feel of every moment of it. And I’ve definitely taken that with me through my college years.”

Any time you reach 1,000 anythings, that’s an impressive accomplishment.

When you reach 1,000 career kills as a college volleyball player, that’s a really impressive accomplishment.

That’s exactly what Batavia alumna Caitlin Piechota did Sept. 24, helping lead her Western Carolina Catamounts to a victory in the process.

“It was really exciting. I kind of forgot I was even near that at the beginning of the season, and my coach mentioned it and I got really excited about it,” Piechota said.

“And then I got my 1,000th kill at home, which was great because I could celebrate with all of our fans; my mom got to see it back at home. It’s a good feeling.”

The 2010 Chronicle Player of the Year, Piechota is no stranger to big on-court achievements. She became the 13th player in Western Carolina history to reach the 1,000-kill milestone and the ninth player in school history to reach both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. But more than those in-the-moment milestones, Piechota is happy to reach that four-digit number for another reason. “(It means) that a lot of my hard work is paying off,” she said. “It’s great to be part of Catamount history, but it’s even better to see that in all my years here, there’s something that can be put it the book for all the hard work and all the support my team has given me. So it really did mean a lot.”

There will be plenty more than those numbers, however.

Indicators were there that Bears might struggle If you are like most of the people I’ve been talking to on the radio, or the gang that’s emailing me regularly or just most of the folks I bump into on the streets, you’re probably feeling duped by the 2014 Bears right about now.

I never drank the Kool-Aid some of you did and uttered or even dreamed the two biggest words in sports: Super Bowl.

In fact, I’ve been clear since last spring these guys aren’t good enough to win a playoff game.

But I did predict these guys could be good enough to hang around through a brutal first nine games on their schedule, six of which were on the road, and then win six of their last seven to finish at 10-6, giving them an 87 percent probability of being a wild-card team.

Obviously, that’s not going to happen.

For some NFL teams, a bye is a wonderful thing, and Aaron Rodgers’ hamstring is dinged, although he said it won’t keep him from beating the Bears. But the problem with my prediction is the Saints were supposed to be the only real roadblock with their three games against the Lions (2) and Cowboys being laydowns.

So, how did this all go so terribly wrong?

Let’s start with the premise that Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall were suddenly going to be MVP candidates and team leaders in their ninth seasons in the NFL. The Cutler hopes were a

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush hair more realistic than those for Marshall because they were based on the belief/hope that Marc Trestman was the quarterback whisperer he needed.

The problem with all that is just the slightest bit of research would have made clear that although Trestman is a good offensive mind, he never has come close to engineering the kind of turnaround Bears fans expected from Cutler.

Cutler’s shortcomings have never been the result of coaching, they are the result of habits he’s developed over a lifetime in the game that are as damaging today as they were the day he left Vanderbilt.

As for Marshall, it took four seasons for the Broncos to realize they couldn’t afford to have him around any longer and only two for the Dolphins to come to the same conclusion.

Why was he suddenly going to get better, let alone fail to do damage in his third season in Chicago?

Unfortunately, there is a lot more.

Almost every day in Bourbonnais I heard someone say at least we “know” the defensive line is better.

The Bears had the worst safeties in football last season and “fixed” that by bringing back one of them in Chris Conte and adding career backups Ryan Mundy, Danny McCray and M.D. Jennings to compete with him.

How was that supposed to turn out any differently than it did?

It’s great having the best pair of starting wideouts in the NFL, or at least Marshall and Alshon Jeffery were last year. But how do you ignore the third and fourth spots?

Demariyus Thomas and Wes Welker actually were more productive last season than Marshall and Jeffery when you include TDs. But the Broncos made adding Emmanuel Sanders a priority.

What did the Bears do?

There’s really no mystery here.

We’ve got the next week or

so to try to figure out what’s next and how close or far away a winning team really is.

But the story of the 2014 season so far is the Bears, led

by Phil Emery, mixed up a big batch of sugar water with none of the actual ingredients you need to make Champagne, and we all just gulped it down on our own.

No one theory can explain why we yawn Dear Doctor K: I get plenty of sleep. So, why do I yawn all the time?

Dear Reader: We all yawn frequently, more often in the early morning and late evening. Does it mean we’re tired? Bored? Short on oxygen? As common as it is, we know little for certain about yawning.

We do know that yawning does not always indicate a need for sleep. It is true that people often yawn as they get ready to retire for the night. But we also yawn when we first arise in the morning and at other times during the day.

Past theories about why we yawn centered on the assumption that it was a reflex in response to low oxygen or high carbon dioxide levels. That’s because breathing (which is what we do when we yawn) takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. When you yawn, you take in more air than with a normal breath. So, it’s a reasonable theory that we yawn because we need more oxygen, or less carbon dioxide.

But reasonable theories often don’t prove true. This particular

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff theory lost favor after a study in which volunteers subjected to high oxygen levels did not yawn less, and after high carbon dioxide exposure did not yawn more.

Another theory of yawning is that it protects against a condition called atelectasis (at-al-EK-tas-is), which is the collapse of some of the lung’s air sacs. The lungs are full of tiny little air sacs, but not all of them are filled with air. If an air sac remains without air, it’s like a little collapsed balloon.

Instead of being separated by air, the walls of the sac touch each other. If that goes on for very long, the walls can get sticky. It gets harder for the air sac to open when new air enters the lungs.

Yawning opens up tiny airways and prevents them from collapsing. So, the theory that yawning is a reflex that protects against atelectasis is reasonable.

This could explain why yawning seems to occur when your breath-

ing is shallow, such as when you’re tired or bored. However, we don’t know if the theory is true.

Here’s another theory: Yawning might be a warning system to alert you that you’re getting sleepy and you had better stay awake. If you are driving a car, for example, and relaxing to the point where you might soon fall asleep, yawning might make you more conscious of the need to take a break. Yawning is associated with stretching of the muscles and joints and an increased heart rate.

That may make you more alert.

Finally, yawning may be a sign of disease. Although rarely the first sign, excessive yawning has been observed among people with multiple sclerosis, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and Parkinson’s disease.

To be clear, yawning is not usually a sign of disease. It’s usually just a sign that you’re human.

Mom spoke in frustration Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and have two older brothers.

One is a year older and the other is two years older than I am. Our mother divorced our father about five years ago and the three of us live with our mother.

I try to be a good, sweet kid, but nothing I do seems to please my mom. My two brothers can get away with anything, but if I do one small thing wrong I get punished.

My brothers broke a neighbor’s window yesterday and my mom called it an accident.

I didn’t say anything, but I know it wasn’t an accident because they were throwing rocks at the neighbor’s cat. Then because I was running late and didn’t make my bed this morning before I left for school I was grounded for a week. I told my mom I thought she was being unfair, but she got upset and told me she didn’t think I really was her child and that the hospital had probably made a mistake and given her the wrong baby to take home. Do you think this could possibly be true?

– Nameless, McComb, Mississippi Dear Nameless: No. Your mom spoke in anger and frustration, before her good sense had a chance to curb her tongue. Her words were mean and childish and I can hardly blame you for feeling hurt.

Being a single parent of three teenagers is an enormous challenge, and it appears that Mom may be in over her head. She is allowing your brothers to run wild and rationalizing their misbehavior, but compensates by being overly, and perhaps irrationally, strict and punitive with you.

Dr. Wallace: My mother, younger brother and I moved here from Chicago because my mom was able to get a job here in Crown Point, Indiana, after my father died. I like it here and have made a few friends. They know there is no father in our home, so I think they just assume my folks are divorced. One time I said that my dad was back in Atlanta. It’s true, but he is really buried there.

My dad died almost two years ago and I’m having a really hard time believing that he is gone forever. I just don’t know why, but I can’t bring myself to tell my friends that my father died. What should I do? – Concerned, Crown Point, Indiana Dear Concerned: In time, you will be able to accept his death.

But you need to start the healing process by telling your friends, when they ask, that your father has passed away. Explain that you love him and miss him very much. When you don’t allow yourself to tell your friends this, you are denying them the chance to really know you.

Also, keeping his death a secret is a much greater emotional burden than sharing it with your friends.

Scheetz Director Ordinance 2014-009 An Ordinance Levying an Additional Tax of 0.02% for Buildings and Equipment for Library Purposes, and Maintenance, Repairs, and Alterations of Library Buildings and Equipment in the Batavia Public Library District, in the Counties of Kane and DuPage, Illinois, for the Fiscal Year 20142015 Whereas, Section 355 (b) of the Public Library District Act of 1991 [75 ILCS 16] authorizes the Board of Library Trustees to levy, in addition to the annual public library tax for the establishment, maintenance, and support of the public library within the Library District (the corporate tax), a special purpose tax "for the purchase of sites and buildings, the construction and equipment of buildings, the rental of buildings required for library purposes, and maintenance, repairs, and alterations of library buildings and equipment"; and Whereas, the amount of this special purpose tax is "0.02% of the value of all the taxable property in the district, as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue"; and Whereas, the Board of Library Trustees deems it advisable and necessary to levy this special purpose tax for the Fiscal Year 20142015.

Now, Therefore, Be It Ordained by the Board of Library Trustees of the Batavia Public Library District, Batavia, Illinois, in the Counties of Kane and DuPage, Illinois, as follows: Section 1. That a special purpose tax of 0.02% of the value of all taxable property in the Library District, as equalized or assessed by the Department of Revenue, shall be levied for the purchase of sites and buildings, the construction and equipment of buildings, the rental of buildings required for library purposes, and maintenance, repairs, and alterations of library buildings and equipment, for the Fiscal Year beginning 1 July 2014 and ending 30 June 2015.

Section 2. That the Library Director shall publish and file this Ordinance in accordance with Illinois Statutes.

Section 3. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval according to law.
