Girl, 3, credited for saving sister’s life

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Thirteenyear-old Destiny Harville was watching her 3-year-old sister, Jazmine Harville, on Monday after their mother took a quick trip to Walmart.

But it was Jazmine who ended up taking care of Destiny when she was knocked unconscious after hitting her head on the handlebar of a tricycle.

“She’s my little Doc McStuffins,” Destiny said.

“She’s my hero.”

Destiny was sweeping the family’s apartment Monday morning while she was baby-sitting Jazmine, but then she tripped over the broom and ended up hitting her head on the handlebar of a tricycle that was in their apartment.

She called her mother, Leandra Harville, who was on the way to Walmart.

“I told her that I just bumped my head, and I was having trouble breathing,” Destiny said.

After that conversation with her mother, Destiny suddenly fell unconscious, leaving Jazmine the one in charge.

“Jazmine told me, ‘Destiny is sleeping mommy, she won’t get up,’” Leandra Harville said.

Jazmine stayed with Destiny until a next-door neighbor, Lisa Garcia, arrived at their apartment.

Thirteen-year-old Destiny Harville was helped by her 3-year-old sister, Jazmine Harville, after taking a fall and hitting her head Monday in her Batavia home.

Jazmine opened the door for her.

Garcia right away realized the seriousness of the situation.

“Her eyes were completely rolled back in her head,” Garcia said.

On her way home, Leandra Harville called 911, and an ambulance rushed Destiny to Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

She also credited Jazmine for helping save Destiny’s life.

“Even though her sister

was lying on the ground, she never cried,” Leandra Harville said. “I was the one trying to keep my composure.”

The doctors at Delnor examined Destiny, and so far, it looks as though she will be fine.

“We have to watch her and see if her head is hurting her,” Leandra Harville said.

Destiny, meanwhile, said she is feeling much closer to Jazmine now.

“She doesn’t really understand what she did,” Destiny said.

“

Building a linguistic bridge District 303 uses ‘biliteracy’ program to improve performance at Davis Richmond

For the past five years, Pavona, of Montgomery, has taught second grade to dozens of children in St. Charles School District 303.

But Pavona’s daily lessons are delivered a little differently from those taught by many of her colleagues, as the majority of her instruction – usually around 60 percent per day – is delivered in Spanish.

“We introduce new concepts in the native language so they can understand it, and then, as we move on, begin discussing it in English,” Pavona said. “We build a bridge, allowing these students to not only become bilingual but biliterate.

“For me, it’s always amazing to see these kids, at such a young age, reading and writing in two languages.”

Since being hired at District 303, Pavona has taught through the district’s developmental biliteracy program at Richmond and Davis elementary schools.

The program exists to address some of the academic challenges facing both the students for whom English is not their native language and the public schools who are held responsible by the federal and state governments for educating them, said Cindy Ruesch, District 303’s associate director of curriculum and ELL (English language learners) program director.

The program was launched in 2008 with a group of ELL kindergarten students, and since has grown to include ELL students from kindergarten through fifth grade at Davis Richmond School and Anderson Elementary School.

“Research tells us it takes about five to seven years to learn another language, to become proficient in it,” Ruesch said. “So when you have children coming into the system without knowing English, it puts them at a disadvantage.”

Those disadvantages often can translate into achievement gaps compared to other students at the schools that can be

reflected on standardized tests mandated by law, such as the Illinois Standardized Achievement Test.

At Richmond Intermediate School in 2012, 86 percent of students considered proficient in English met or exceeded

government-mandated testing standards in reading; 92 percent of those students met or exceeded standards in mathematics; and 88 percent in science.

However, among students classified as having “limited English proficiency,” or LEP, only 33 percent met or exceeded standards in reading; 60 percent in math; and 45 percent in science.

The 2012 results, however, mark improvement from 2008, when only 23 percent of LEP students met or exceeded standards in reading; 49 percent in math; and only 21 percent in science.

The difficulties at Richmond are at the heart of District 303’s decision in 2011 to merge the school with Davis Elementary School. That decision sparked a lawsuit from parents.

That legal action resulted in a decision from a Kane County judge, who found that

Sugar Grove • A man, 50, of the 700 block of

Pembridge Place, Sugar Grove, told police Friday, Oct. 18, that someone had burglarized his vehicle, taking an iPad. The incident is believed to have occurred during the overnight hours of Oct. 17 when witnesses told police they saw two people, dressed in black hooded sweatshirts, fleeing from the man’s house on foot.

• A man, 46, of the 700 block of Pembridge Place, Sugar Grove, told police Friday, Oct. 18, that someone had burglarized his vehicle, taking only a set of keys. Police believe the incident may have occurred during the overnight hours of Thursday, Oct. 17.

• A man, 35, of the 700 block of Queensgate Circle, Sugar Grove, told police on Saturday, Oct. 19, that someone had burglarized his vehicle, likely during the overnight hours of Thursday, Oct. 17. The man said a set of tools was missing from his trunk and a speaker in the trunk had been damaged.

• A woman, 55, of the 200 block of Whitfield Drive, Sugar Grove, told police Sunday, Oct. 20, that someone had broken a footstool she kept on her front porch.

• A woman, 49, of the 100 block of Arbor Drive, Sugar Grove, told police Tuesday, Oct. 22, that she believed she had been the victim of a home repair scam. She said a contractor assessed her home for hail damage following a July storm.

When she involved her insurance company, representatives of the insurer told her the damage to her home’s siding had been inflicted by “mechanical means,” rather than natural causes. She told police she believed the contractor had damaged her siding, resulting in the need for $13,000 to $17,000 in repairs.

• Jeffrey Ottersen, 33, of the 200 block of Woodland Drive, Round Lake Beach, was arrested Friday, Oct. 25, on two Kane County warrants for failure to appear in court on charges of driving while license revoked and aggravated driving under the influence.

• Justin Lane, 25, of the 2300 block of North Harlem Avenue, Elmwood Park, was charged Friday, Oct. 25, with possession of drug paraphernalia.

• A woman, 39, of the 1300 block of Slater Street, Sugar Grove, told police Saturday, Oct. 26, that someone had burglarized her vehicle, taking cash and three iPads, including some that belonged to a business.

NORTH AURORA – Christopher W. “Chris” Butler Jr., 63, of North Aurora, passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at his home, after a battle with kidney cancer.

He was born July 16, 1950, in Yazoo City, Miss., the son of Mary (Monroe) Butler and the late Christopher Butler Sr. Chris was an instructor for more than 28 years at Eastern Oklahoma State College. He also served as a reserve policeman for more than 10 years and a city councilman for more than seven years in Wilburton, Okla.

Most recently, he worked at Kaneland High School as part of its security personnel.

Chris also was a part-time employee for the Waubonsee Community College athletic department as the public address speaker for home basketball and baseball games.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Edith Butler of North Aurora; his sister, Mary Frances Tabor; and mother, Mary Evelyn Butler, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at The Healy Sugar Grove Chapel.

ELGIN – Meredith Ann “Peggy” Lohs, 91, of Elgin, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Sherman West Court, Elgin, surrounded by family and friends.

Peggy was well-known and loved by many for the warmth of her smile, her kindness, her positive spirit, her enthusiasm for life, her love of animals and mostly for her love of family. She was independent, fun-loving, indomitable and full of grace. She lived her faith daily and was an inspiration to family and friends her entire life.

Peggy was born March 9, 1922, in Geneva, to George and Helen (nee Faitz) Marshall. She graduated from St. Charles High School and attended Cornell College. She was united in marriage to Cliff Lohs on Nov. 22, 1944, in Ft. Myers, Fla., in an Army chapel shortly before his Air Force division was deployed to Germany.

Peggy and Cliff were very happily married for 66 years, enjoying 25 years together in retirement until his death in 2010. Together, they enjoyed their large extended family, friends, nature, music and racing sailboats on Lake Geneva. In 1973, they built their vacation home in Door County, where they spent many very happy hours with both new Door County friends and old friends from Elgin.

Peggy was the oldest girl of eight children and helped raise her youngest siblings after the death of her mother in her teens. As an adult, she “mothered, cuddled and nurtured hundreds of children” through her work as a secretary at Lincoln and Channing elementary schools, as a nursery school teacher at Epworth United Methodist Church and as a volunteer at the Community Crisis Center of Elgin.

Peggy is survived by her three children, David (Beverly) of Eden Prairie, Minn., Gary (Connie) of Elgin and Jan-

et Lohs (Wayne Mroz) of Inverness; two grandsons, Nathan of Hershey, Pa., and Ethan of Elgin; as well as Nathan’s wife, Sally. Also surviving are siblings, George “Bud” (Barbara) Marshall, Barbara Anderson, William (Phyllis) Marshall, Joan (Dave) Olson and Jack (Dottie) Marshall (St. Charles). She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Peggy was preceded in death by her stepmother, Alene; brother, Robert Marshall; and sister, Nancy Fischer; brothers-in-law, Chet Anderson and Warren Fischer; and her mother- and father-in-law, Louise and Harry Lohs.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Epworth United Methodist Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Mark Jacobs officiating.

Luncheon will follow.

(nee Gould) Schultze, 84, of Batavia, passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Heritage Woods in Batavia, where she has been a resident for the past five years. Marilyn was born June 29, 1929, in Batavia, the daughter of Henry and Helen (nee Clarke) Gould. She was united in marriage to Frederick P. Schultze on May 3, 1947, in Batavia.

She is survived by her son, Donald Schultze of Elburn; two grandchildren, Michelle (David) Kovacs of Aurora and Jeremy Schultze of Batavia; a son-in-law, Leslie Clarke of Batavia; and a lifelong dear friend, Mary Ann Ford.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick; a daughter, Patricia Clarke; a daughter-in-law, Susan Schultze; and two brothers, F. Aubrey Gould and Jack Gould.

CHARLES – Guinevere Marie VanDenBossche, 81, of St. Charles, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by her loving family at Arden Courts in Geneva.

She was born June 14, 1932, in West Frankfort, Ill., the daughter of George and Gladys (nee Culbertson) Carter.

She was united in marriage to John VanDenBossche on Nov. 23, 1957, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia.

Guin was a talented oil painter and enjoyed painting throughout her entire life. She worked for many years as a secretary for the Illinois Department of Corrections. John and Guin enjoyed several winters in Tucson, Ariz., after retirement. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

$1M bond for STC teacher

Jerome McCauley, 45, of the 300 block of Grant Street in Sycamore, was charged with Jerome p o s s e s s i n g McCauley and distributing child pornography Monday after police searched his home. He acknowledged having between 1,000 and 1,500 images and five to 10 videos of child pornography, some showing 12-year-old girls, court records show.

In order to be released from jail, McCauley would have to post $100,000 bail.

McCauley, who coaches volleyball and teaches seventh-graders at Wredling Middle School in St. Charles School District 303, was placed on paid leave Monday morning, District Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

School officials said they secured an iPad and computer

McCauley used as a teacher and cooperated with local police.

Police began the investigation in August, when a Sycamore detective assigned to Internet crimes found an IP address associated with someone who may have possessed child pornography, police said.

After a series of subpoenas and search warrants, police recently connected McCauley to the child pornography, police said. McCauley collected the material in a file-sharing program that allowed other users to download it.

Appearing in DeKalb County Court on Tuesday morning, McCauley was appointed a public defender.

When Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert asked if he was employed, he replied: “At this point, yes, but I doubt [for] very long.”

If convicted, McCauley would be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison.

He has no criminal record, but Stuckert ordered that he have no contact with children or the Internet if he posts bond.

McCauley is next due in court Nov. 13.

ELBURN – A man who was selling labrador puppies from the back of a pickup truck in Elburn stirred the ire of a local animal rights activist, who urged people not to patronize such an endeavor, calling it cruel and “grossly irresponsible.”

“It is grossly irresponsible to put a bunch of puppies in the back of pickup a truck and sell them to anyone walking by,” said Steve Hindi, president of Showing Animals Respect and Kindness – SHARK – and an Elburn resident.

He said the cruelty aspect goes beyond puppies rolling around in the back of a truck, but that buyers were not properly screened before being sold a puppy, and he said the man selling them offered no information about the animals, such as their breeding or shots.

The incident occurred Aug. 10 on Route 47 on the parkway in Elburn. Hindi said his video of the puppy sales was being released now because the animal rights group just returned

While selling puppies is not illegal, Hindi said buying one – even for the $400 in cash Tiffin was charging – is an impulse buy that often results in an unwanted pet that becomes the responsibility of shelters and rescues to find them homes.

“The problem is, everybody loves puppies,” Hindi said.

“These dogs certainly should not be an impulse buy. You have to plan for a puppy. They need to be trained, get shots, see the vet, cared for, walked – these are all the reasons you don’t impulse-buy an animal.”

Hindi’s video shows a company name on the side of the truck, Sugar Bear Lab Retrievers with a phone number. The phone number is disconnected, and the company is not listed with the Illinois Secretary of State.

The machines have been installed since April, and Bob Beetham, the legion’s finance officer, said “it’s helping us.”

“It’s to get more people in,” he said. “They like to play the machines.”

Such machines are allowed in Maple Park, Sugar Grove, North Aurora and Elburn, as well as in unincorporated areas of Kane County. And several locations do have video gambling in western Kane County.

And the Illinois Gaming Board continues to approve new licenses. In August, Run-A-Way in North Aurora received a license. In its two years participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run – the single largest year-round fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Illinois – the Maple Park Police Department has ranked 13th and fifth in overall fundraising efforts, Police Chief

This year, it is aiming even higher.

“We’re trying to be No. 1 in the state,” Acosta said. “We wanted to add one more event to make sure we had it.”

So, in addition to the other fundraising events it holds throughout the year, the police department on Saturday launched Crazy Quail’s Pulling for Special Olympics event.

The honor is awarded to the department that demonstrates the greatest effort for Special Olympics and dedica-

tion to the program, Acosta said. If Maple Park gets it, he said, the police department will treat it like the Stanley Cup and have it travel around the village.

“It’s a great thing for the community,” Acosta said.

The Maple Park Police Department next year hopes to break the all-time fundraising record held by the Frankfort Police Department, which raised more than $70,000 in one year, Acosta said.

“Next year our goal is to top that,” he said.

Aldermen propose expanding housing program

“We want it to be a more comprehensive program rather than just a police program,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening told aldermen. “It’s also about the condition of the housing. We think it will do a lot to help bring them [rental buildings] to a higher standard in the community.”

Staff has proposed that a building or complex would

need to pass a property maintenance inspection before the owner is issued a rental property license. The inspection would include the exterior of the building’s grounds and common areas within the building. Individual apartments would not be inspected, Buening said.

Under the current program, landlords must include a crime-free lease addendum that makes criminal activity a violation and grounds for eviction.

That includes murder, drug-related criminal activity, prostitution and unlawful use of weapons.

Official: District to keep developing biliteracy program • BRIDGE Continued from page 4 the district merged the schools in an attempt to sidestep corrective actions that would have been required by federal law for Richmond school as a result of that school’s consistent underperformance on the standardized tests.

In his decision, the judge specifically ordered District 303 to develop a corrective action plan to provide the extra help to the LEP students to raise their test scores and reduce the achievement gap, as measured by the state test.

Ruesch said the district will continue to develop its biliteracy program for LEP students at the schools in which the program is now being implemented. And she said the district also will increase an emphasis on “co-teaching” methods in other settings, partnering ELL instruction with traditional English language classroom instruction.

Ruesch said the programs already have borne results. In addition to improving ISAT scores, she pointed to the performance of primarily Spanish-speaking LEP students on the state’s ACCESS English proficiency tests.

Last year, 64.5 percent of ELL students met progress targets on ACCESS, compared to the state standard of 60.5 percent.

And 43 percent of students had attained proficiency, as measured by ACCESS, allowing them to exit the biliteracy program, if their parents so desired, compared to a state requirement of 10 percent.

Pavona and Ruesch said they believe the program’s results derive from the commitment to teaching children in two languages at once, using instruction in other core subjects to also teach English simultaneously.

“The kiddos come to us in kindergarten having been exposed to two languages through their environment,” Pavona said. “So our goal is to make sure they can read, write, listen and speak, academically, in both languages.”

Controlling the availability of painkillers THE WASHINGTON POST Few blessings of modern science are entirely unmixed, and so it is with the development of powerful synthetic or semi-synthetic opioid analgesics – painkillers such as fentanyl and hydrocodone.

Prescribed by the tens of millions in recent years for their power to relieve otherwise crippling pain in the victims of disease and injury, these pills have turned into a $7.3 billion-per-year business.

Yet they also pose a major public health risk because of their ready availability and addictiveness to many patients.

In fact, abuse of prescription medications is overtaking that of “street drugs” such as

heroin and cocaine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spoke of a painpill overdose “epidemic” that cost 15,000 lives in the United States in 2008, up from 4,000 in 1999. Nearly half a million emergency-department visits in 2009 were because of people misusing or abusing prescription painkillers, according to the CDC, while nonmedical use of prescription painkillers costs health insurers up to $72.5 billion annually.

On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration announced an important action aimed at reversing this dangerous trend. The FDA recommended that the federal government add so-called hydrocodone combination

products to the list of Schedule II drugs, which would make it significantly more difficult for people to obtain more than a 90-day supply without visiting a doctor for a new prescription; no phone or fax prescriptions would be allowed. Under current rules, it is possible to get six months’ worth of pills on a single, refillable prescription.

Unlike pure hydrocodone, which was already on Schedule II because of its high potential for abuse, the combination products, with trade names such as Vicodin or Lortab, include an opioid and a non-narcotic such as acetaminophen.

according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. But an FDA advisory panel found that the combination products are more habit-forming and susceptible to wider abuse than previously thought. The FDA recommendation is not the government’s final word on the subject, but the DEA and Department of Health and Human Services are likely to ratify it.

The only bad news is that it took so long for the federal bureaucracy to reach this sound conclusion. The DEA asked the FDA to reevaluate the scheduling of hydrocodone combination products four years ago, when the prescription-drug epidemic was well underway.

Congress also weighed in, in the form of proposed legislation by then-Rep. (now Sen.) Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., and Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla. But opponents ranging from pharmaceutical companies to the American Cancer Society objected that tighter controls would unduly inconvenience patients.

Actually, the FDA’s decision represents a modest step toward controlling the black market. It won’t stop “doctor shopping” by drug-seeking patients; probably nothing could.

The FDA has struck the right balance, based on its correct assessment that the public interest lies not in more use of pain medicines but in the proper use of them.

East rips Wheaton North

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com SCHAUMBURG – Call it a throwback Tuesday for the St. Charles East boys soccer team.

East has encountered more challenging matches this postseason than last year, but in Tuesday’s IHSA Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal, the Saints blitzed an opponent much like they regularly did in last year’s postseason, ripping Wheaton North, 5-0.

East advances to Saturday’s sectional final against the winner of today’s Lake Park-Elk Grove semifinal.

“It was nice to put a team away early on, and not let them hang around throughout the game to take off the pressure from us, and let us just play,” East senior Daniel DiLeonardi said.

Daniel DiLeonardi scored East’s second goal of the night after his younger brother, Evan, scored less than three minutes in for a quick Saints edge. Daniel DiLeonardi’s goal came less than a minute after Saints goalkeeper Chris Lucatorto stopped Wheaton North’s Connor Ritchie on a breakaway to keep East on top.

East forward Tyler Robbins made it 3-0 by poking in a point-blank shot late in the first half, and Jordan Moore (penalty kick) and Andrew Shone swelled the Saints’ lead in the second half.

The top-seeded Saints (20-14) earned a superlative review from Wheaton North coach Tim McEvilly.

“This is the most clinical group of finishers I’ve ever seen in my life, as far as high school soccer players,” McEvilly said of the Saints.

“They get a clean shot on goal, it’s in 90 percent of time, where most high school kids, it’s 10 percent of the time. It’s unbelievable the way they finish, and the efficiency in which they put the ball in the back of the net.”

“We were pretty clinical in front of goal, especially in the first half,” he said. “Second

East was dominant enough that Saints coach Paul Jennison was able to gradually empty his bench as the second half unfolded.

“To have the whole squad play in this game is such a confidence boost,” Jennison said. “I don’t think you can ever put a price on having everyone feel involved in the team mentality. I think it’s a fantastic character-builder for your team, not just having 11 guys out there. I think a lot of times when teams fail, they have 11 guys, and if they have to turn to someone, they’re not ready or they’re not interested.”

Novotny – who made a strong save within a minute of entering – made his first appearance in more than a month.

Novotny suffered an ankle injury in a frightening collision Sept. 26 that ended the season of Marmion’s Flynn Collins (broken jaw).

Jennison called Novotny’s return a “massive lift” for East down the stretch as the Saints move within one win of what would be their second straight sectional title.

“Having the two quality

keepers back in practice really goes give all the guys a lift,” Jennison said. “It makes us so much better as a group, it makes practice so much more cohesive, it raises Chris’s level and, in turn, Mike vibes off of that. Those two seem to be back where they were before Mike got hurt. It’s a great position.”

Note: St. Charles East senior forward TC Hull underwent successful surgery on his torn ACL Tuesday morning, according to his father, Clint Hull. It was the second ACL repair surgery of 2013 for Hull, who led the Saints in scoring last season as a junior.

For now, the focus is this Saturday, when Barry and the Saints will be widely considered underdogs against a Stevenson team that has won seven straight games, beating highly regarded teams such as Lake Forest and Lake Zurich the past two weeks.

Barry said the Saints (6-3) aren’t sweating seedings or predictions.

“I don’t think we like to think of ourselves as underdogs,” Barry said. “The whole year we talked about making the playoffs and making a good impact in the state playoffs, so it’s not really [an underdog role] to us. We’re high school football players, they’re high school football players.

They’re going to come out and play hard, and so are we.”

Storm welcome celeb: The St. Charles Storm basketball program will welcome Montverde Academy (Fla.) head coach Kevin Boyle for a clinic Saturday at Wredling Middle School. Boyle was the USA Today Coach of the Year in 2013, the 2011 Naismith Coach of the Year and the 2009 ESPN Coach of the Year.

When Brannon Barry called down to Normal on Monday evening to offer his verbal commitment to the Illinois State football program, the Redbirds coaches were in a staff meeting.

Moments later, ISU’s entire staff was celebrating the St. Charles East senior’s decision. At least, that’s the way it sounded to Barry, who made the call after East’s Monday practice.

“They were very excited,” Barry said.

“They were hooting and hollering, and they were very happy. It just Brannon Barry shows I made the right call.”

Barry had plenty of advice to help him decide.

The receiver/safety comes from a family of athletes, including college-athlete siblings Bryce (a football player at Butler) and older sister Erienne (a volleyball player at Western Michigan).

Barry said Bryce was especially helpful, having previously gone through the process of plotting his college football future.

“He said wherever you go, make sure to make it your own,” Barry said. “Illinois State is a place I see myself going and a place I can see myself making an impact at.”

Barry said the ISU coaches envision him playing receiver in college. The 6-foot-5 Barry leads the Saints this season with 41 receptions for 644 receiving yards. He has five TD receptions leading up to Saturday’s IHSA Class 8A, first-round playoff game at Stevenson.

Barry chose ISU over another Missouri Valley Football Conference program, Western Illinois, after visiting both campuses this month. The MVFC is considered among the top Football Championship Subdivision conferences in the country. League member North Dakota State is the two-time defending FCS national champions.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Showing respect for their longtime rivals and the seeding at the 4A Addison Trail Regional, Geneva girls volleyball players offered conditional praise for Batavia between semifinals Tuesday night.

As the Vikings cooled off from a 25-19, 25-16 sweep of Addison Trail, the Bulldogs warmed up for a match – and presumable victory – against Elk Grove.

The complimentary words of Geneva junior defensive specialist Camille Kolquist and freshman outside hitter Grace Loberg suddenly sounded a little less evergreen after Batavia stumbled in the opening game against the Grenadiers.

Then Batavia rebounded for a 21-25, 25-14, 25-12 win, and the adulation entering Thursday’s regional final rematch was back on.

“Batavia, they’re just

all around really solid, and it’s going to be a really good game,” Kolquist said. “I think it should be close, but we’re ready to play.”

“We’re excited to have another chance to play them,” added Loberg. “We know we’re going to come out stronger and harder.”

Visiting the Vikings in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play Sept. 17, the Bulldogs rallied for a 20-25, 25-22, 2522 victory. It marked the first time Batavia seniors Audrey Faulhaber, Heather Meyer and Shea Thayer had defeated Geneva in their three-year varsity careers.

Batavia (20-16) relishes the chance to play Geneva (26-9) again at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Bulldogs are especially gratified to know they’re familiar with the Vikings. There was very much an early feeling-out process against Elk Grove (1619), but the Bulldogs exhaled once they adjusted to the Grenadiers’ block and began mixing

“We are a team where we will do really good for a couple points and then struggle for a couple, and then do really good for a couple,” said Meyer, who smacked 18 kills. “But I think tonight we executed a lot better than we have in the past, and I think that helped us a lot, kind of getting those big runs and pushing forward.”

Batavia used a 9-1 run mid-

way through the second game to take a 21-12 lead. In Game 3, the Bulldogs yielded the first point, then scored nine straight. Faulhaber (32 assists) paced an attack that also included Thayer (seven kills, seven blocks). Heidi Hoffman served four aces.

Geneva credited Kolquist’s lengthy service run in Game 2 against Addison Trail (13-24) with assuring one more long bus ride. She was at the helm of an 8-0 spurt that reversed an early deficit and helped the Vikings close the match.

“Because we had missed a couple [of serves] that game, I just had to go in and trust the hitters on our team to put them down and just focus on getting my serve in,” Kolquist said.

The run included a handful of long rallies, which kept players from both sides on their toes.

While Addison Trail’s public address announcer frequently called on the crowd to holler more support between points, players didn’t need

such provocation thanks to the natural flow of the match.

“You just have to keep going and keep pushing,” Loberg said. “Get up to block as hard as you can, hit the ball as hard as you can.”

Loberg (12 kills) and Ally Barrett (five) led Geneva’s offense. Kelsey Wicinski added 15 digs, while Courtney Caruso had 14 assists.

Along with her teammates, Meyer – who admitted she only recently had heard of Elk Grove – knows those players and their skill sets well.

All the better for when the fourth-seeded Vikings and fifth-seeded Bulldogs renew acquaintances.

“Why not? Right? That’s what the playoffs are all about,” Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said. “I mean, we’re even teams, really. The seeds are about even. We beat them the first time, but it was close. We tied in conference.

So we’re even. It’ll be a good match.”

Northern Illinois-bound senior Taylor Krage had 10 kills for the North Stars (29-5), the No. 2 seed in the Geneva Sectional.

“We really wanted to come out with high energy today because it helps set the tone for everything we hope to do this post-season,” Krage said. “We really tried to focus on our ball control. We knew there was going to be a lot of high and deep shots and a lot of deep, aggressive serves. They really took us out of our game a little bit on serve receive, so we had to have higher execution hittingwise.”

The 18th-seeded Bison (8-19) got an ace serve from Nicole Susmarski to stay close in the first game at 12-8, but North

“We work on that a lot,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said. “We have kind of made it our motto that we are going to serve low to the tape and with some velocity because that’s a hard ball to pass. You’re not

going see jump serves out of us, but you’re going to see some hard-driven float serves because that’s just about maybe the hardest ball to pass.”

The North Stars executed that phase of the game well, making no service errors in the match. An ace by Sydney Wohlert started North on an 8-0 run to begin the second game.

Sophia DuVall had three kills in the middle during that spree, a couple coming on quick sets by Wohlert, who had 14 assists.

A couple hitting errors by the North Stars gave Fenton a brief flicker of hope in the second game as the Bison cut the deficit to 12-5.

“We have a lot to clean up,” Hawkins said. “We haven’t played since last Tuesday, so a week off really didn’t do us any good. We had a lot of our own mental errors.”

The North Stars scored the next eight points to squash Fenton’s slim comeback hopes with three coming on aces by Krage.

“We’ve also been trying

to serve really aggressively,” Krage said. “Really if you win the serve and pass game, you win the match.”

With a comfortable 20-5 lead, Hawkins was able to give a number of players off the bench

some valuable post-season experience.

“We’ve got a really deep bench,” Hawkins said. “It’s a really nice problem to have. I can turn to anybody and they’re ready to go.”

St. Charles North senior Ashley England hopes to translate her momentum from Saturday’s Wheaton North Regional title to this Saturday’s Waubonsie Valley Sectional, with state qualification on the line. England, this week’s St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about regionals, sectionals and more. The following is an edited transcript: What that a goal to win individually Saturday?

It was, especially after conference. I led the whole race and then I got out-kicked [at conference], so it was definitely on my agenda. I actually told my coach, ‘Next week I’m going out there and I’m winning it.’ She didn’t really believe me at first but as the week went on, I kept getting stronger and stronger, and we knew it was possible.

Would you say this has been more of a consistent season for you or more of an up-anddown season?

It’s definitely been consistent.

I’ve ran the same time three weeks in a row so most definitely my most consistent year out of all four.

What’s the early read on sectionals?

It’s definitely going to be tough. It’s going to be tough to make it out as a team. Individually, I’m hoping to make it out. … My goal is to get top eight in sectionals, and I think it’s doable.

If you were having trouble with some difficult homework, who is the teammate you’d turn to for help?

I would probably turn to Kaylee Wessel. I turn to her for a lot of different stuff.

ELMHURST – For nearly a month, the St. Charles East girls volleyball team has been playing without injured middle-hitter Mikaela Mosquera, who was recovering from a concussion.

Mosquera returned to the lineup in East’s playoff opener against Glenbard East on Tuesday and immediately made her presence felt, helping the Saints to a relatively easy 25-14, 25-12 win in an IHSA Class 4A York Regional semifinal against Glenbard East that took only 31 minutes to finish.

East’s 25-14, 25-12 win advances the Saints to Thursday’s regional final against York, which defeated Larkin in the other semifinal.

“After [Mosquera] had those first couple of blocks, all of the girls were like, ‘OK, we remember that,’ ” East coach Jennie Kull said. “It’s really nice on the defensive end to have her back. The good news for us was that every single girl played and it wasn’t that much of a difference.”

In previous years, Kull was at the helm of East teams that had star power that carried them to state tournament appearances. This year’s Saints squad is young

With Mosquera back in the lineup, East looked a little unsure of itself in the early going against Glenbard East, finding itself tied at 11 before running off 14 of the next 17 points to take the first game 25-14. The Saints’ ball movement opened up opportunities for Mosquera and Carly Jimenez (match-high 24 assists) before Emily Vitel ended the game with three aces.

Along with Mosquera, fellow middle hitter Ashley Bullock returned from injury, providing quite the shot in the arm for what East hopes is a deep playoff run.

Mosquera fit right in despite only returning to practice Sunday.

“It was great tonight because everyone contributed,” Mosquera said. “When I was out, I tried to help all of the other middles as much as I could. It’s just been great with everyone contributing.”

East’s depth was on full display in Game 2 as Kull was able to get nearly the entire bench on the floor.

The Saints roared out to a 19-9 lead with points from Bullock, Mosquera, Dana Voltolina, Meagan Smith and Alex Mazanke. Reserve Ally Watson helped finish off the Rams with a block and pair of points to help East take Game 2, 25-12.

“We started off slow today, which is understandable because we are still young and it’s a big environment,” Kull said. “Now we have that under our belt, we can go from here. With Ashley back, too, it’s just two more weapons to have back on the floor.”

Mosquera, who led East with six kills, admitted that it took her and the team a few points to get used to each other again.

“We had a slow start but we picked it up and started playing our game we did well,” Mosquera said. “Going forward our depth is going to be huge for us because we know that anyone can step off the bench it tight situations and play well.”

“I think it was good we didn’t give up after we struggled,” senior Jenny Lubic said.

The apparent motivational issues that appeared in Game 2, were basically non existent to start the match.

After Plano pulled to within one point, 15-14, the Knights won six consecutive points,

capped off by back-to-back kills from Ellie Dunn and an ace from McKenzie McMullan.

Dunn, a Ball State recruit, recorded 11 kills in game one, 14 for the game, and was a force from every spot on the front row.

Kaneland jumped out to a 5-2 lead in game two, but Plano’s aggressiveness got the Knights out of serve-receive, and the Reapers reeled off nine consecutive points before two kills from Vanessa Gould stopped the streak.

Gould would provide the offensive spark down the stretch as the Kaneland sophomore put

down four kills in the final six points and recorded a tremendous dig that eventually resulted in a Plano hitting error on the other side of the net.

Acknowledging that a similar effort Thursday against Sycamore might not produce the same results, Kaneland’s players, who responded to questions together as a team, were quick to answer how they planned to keep that motivation throughout.

“Knowing what our goal is and where we want to get to,” they said. “Playing for what we want. What’s at stake.”

“We know what to expect. We got to watch them tonight after our game, so we know we have to compete,” Gecan said. “They’re a good team. We’re a good team. I’m sure you’re going to see a very, very good game.”

Then Patrick Sharp lunged and tapped him on the butt, and Brent Seabrook got him on the side – small gestures of consolation after a second straight alarming performance by the Blackhawks backup goaltender.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said Khabibulin’s performance in a 6-5 overtime loss was “not good enough.”

‘Kill Your Darlings’: Awash in delicious and difficult ambiguities

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post The phrase “it’s complicated” appears more than once in “Kill Your Darlings,” having nothing to do with Facebook relationship-status updates. It’s almost the movie’s signature.

As first uttered by Daniel Radcliffe – playing a 19-year-old Allen Ginsberg, when the poet was still finding his footing at Columbia University and just establishing friendships with the writers who would become known as the Beat Generation – it’s a reference to Ginsberg’s mentally ill mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who was in and out of sanitariums during the poet’s youth.

The person that the line is spoken to is Ginsberg’s schoolmate, Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), a dashing ne’er-do-well and fellow aspiring writer who quickly becomes Ginsberg’s crush and tour guide to the literarily and sexually transgressive world of 1940s Manhattan, where the film is set.

“I love complicated,” Carr says in reply, with a purr halfway between seduction and a threat.

You’d better like complicated, too.

Though based on historical fact, the film is awash in delicious and difficult ambiguities.

It centers on a killing that we glimpse at the film’s opening: Carr’s 1944 stabbing of David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall of “Dexter”), an older admirer who had known Carr since childhood.

Though Carr never denied the murder – in fact, he turned himself in – it’s not entirely clear if the killing was an act of self-defense against a homosexual stalker, as Carr, who died in 2005, claimed, or something more sinister. From the movie, it’s even less apparent whether Carr – who served 18 months for manslaughter, and who went on to marry, fathering three children (including novelist Caleb Carr) – ever reciprocated Ginsberg’s puppyish lust.

The film shows the two young men exchanging a single, brief kiss, but it also shows Carr plagiarizing – soliciting and accepting term papers from both Kammerer and Ginsberg as his own course

As depicted by first-time feature director John Krokidas, who wrote the script with journalist-turned-screenwriter Austin Bunn, Carr is a narcissistic master of psychological and emotional manipulation, allowing Ginsberg, and perhaps Kammerer, to fall in love with him – nay, encouraging it – without requital.

Whether he’s also a cold-blooded murderer is somewhat hedged, albeit just a little. “Kill Your Darlings” clearly doesn’t like Carr, though it stops just short of calling him a murderous, psychopathic liar.

The film is hardly a murder mystery anyway.

To a much greater degree, it’s the story of Ginsberg’s coming of age, both as a gay man and a writer. Krokidas and Bunn do a great job of portraying a world where literature is both sexy and dangerous.

Too often, films about artists aren’t able to capture the creative process.

Here, Radcliffe not only makes for a relatable romantic hero, but also a credible literary one. He’s sensitive and increasingly fearless on both fronts. As the story unfolds, Ginsberg grows up before our

eyes, both as a man and as a wordsmith, with Radcliffe marvelously rendering the naif’s sense of sexual and artistic discovery as he is pulled deeper and deeper into an unfamiliar world, one that’s both frightening and alluring.

As writer Jack Kerouac, Jack Huston is convincing enough. But it is Ben Foster’s William Burroughs – whom we first meet in a bathtub at a party, doing laughing gas, and whose voice is a cross between a dissolute radio DJ and a death rattle – that really sells the film’s sense of decadent rush.

The phrase “kill your darlings” refers to advice sometimes given to writers: always edit out the parts you’re most in love with, because they’re probably the most self-indulgent. In this tale of longing, loss and regret, it isn’t always possible to know who’s deluding oneself, or someone else.

But then, it isn’t always possible to know that in real life either.

• The film “Kill Your Darlings” received three and a half stars. It is rated R and contains violence, drug use, sex, obscenity and lots of cigarette smoking.

The film runs 100 minutes.

Inside the ear are three tiny canals that help us recognize the position of our body in space and maintain balance. Inside the canals is fluid and tiny hairs attached to nerve endings. The way the fluid washes against the hairs changes when your body is in different positions. When the fluid moves the hairs, nerve signals are sent to the brain. Those signals get translated in a way that lets you know what position your body is in.

BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals form in the inner ear and become dislodged. They bang around the canals and touch the

The brain starts to get conflicting signals. You experience this as a sensation of your body moving around in the world (or the world spinning around your body).

If you have BPPV, simply looking up or rolling over in bed can dislodge crystals and cause brief bouts of extreme dizziness.

Vertigo can feel like the room is spinning or as though you are spinning in the room. It can be just a sense of imbalance. It also can cause nausea, vomiting and ringing in the ears.

One treatment for BPPV is the Epley maneuver. In this maneuver, a doctor or physical therapist moves your head and body through a series of positions. You can also learn to do it yourself.

You begin by lying on an examination table. The therapist gently moves your head to the left and right, then has you roll over and sit up.

Each position moves the loose crystals through the ear canal, repositioning them to relieve symptoms. Your symptoms may

improve in as little as 10 minutes.

Your doctor also may provide specific exercises for you to continue at home.

I’ve put an illustration on my website, AskDoctorK.com, that shows how the therapist will move your head and body (and how you can do it yourself). The picture also shows how the crystals will be repositioned during each step to relieve your vertigo.

For more persistent vertigo, your doctor may recommend something called balance rehabilitation. The types of exercises prescribed will depend upon what movements provoke your symptoms.

The Epley maneuver, and several similar exercises, have given relief to many people with BPPV. Before these maneuvers were discovered, the vertigo would ultimately go away on its own, but it could take weeks. These maneuvers speed the improvement – from weeks to minutes. Unfortunately, attacks of vertigo do often return, but the maneuvers help drive them away.

About three months ago, our parents divorced and we were both upset that they couldn’t work things out so we could still be a family. Mom and Dad are good people, but they just couldn’t seem to live together without fighting all the time.

Dear Abby: I am a fire officer who has seen too many families experience accidental home fires, many with fatal results. It is devastating to find out that a life could have been saved had someone taken the simple precaution of replacing a dead battery in a smoke alarm.

In a recent survey, more than 50 percent of the respondents admitted to removing the batteries in their smoke detector, leaving them inoperable. A working smoke alarm in your home greatly increases your chance of surviving a home fire, but only if it is functional.

Please remind your readers to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they turn their clocks back to standard time on Nov. 3. On average, home fires kill seven people every day. No one should be injured or lose a life because of a non-working smoke detector.

If you don’t watch your entries, you may get stranded – as the original declarer did in this deal. South was in four hearts.

West led the diamond ace: five, nine, three. Next, West cashed the diamond king: eight, six, jack.

Then, West continued with the diamond queen. What should declarer have done now?

South seems to have numerous winners: one spade, six hearts and six clubs. What could possibly go wrong?

Despite having seen East play high-low to show a doubleton, declarer ruffed the third diamond on the board. East overruffed and accurately shifted to the spade queen. South won with dummy’s ace, but suddenly realized that he was stranded on the board.

He could not get back to his hand to draw trumps without conceding a spade trick, which would have been his fourth loser. Even playing on clubs could not have helped, unless East had started with all six missing hearts and at least three clubs.

Too late, declarer realized that he should have discarded from the dummy at trick three. Even if West had switched to a spade, South could have won on the board, drawn trumps, and run the clubs.
