Goodbye to an old beat and hello to a new one Let me start out by saying that all I really wanted to say is, “So long, and thanks for all the fish.” Fans of Douglas Adams’ book series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” will undoubtedly understand that reference.

But I’ve been invited to say a little more than that. So, here we go.

Some of you might already know that I recently started working for the Kane County Chronicle’s sister publication, Suburban Life. I now report on the happenings in the hometown where I grew up, Glen Ellyn.

Yes, my journalistic career has come full circle, in more ways than one. One of the first big stories I covered for the Kane County Chronicle when I started there in De-

GUEST VIEW Eric Schelkopf cember 1988 (or more accurately, the Elburn Chronicle, a predecessor of the Kane County Chronicle), was that of an alleged murder suspect who was hiding out in Elburn.

So, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that within my first week of working for Suburban Life, I was covering the arrest of a suspect in a murder that occurred near Glen Ellyn in 1985.

Working for a news organization for almost 28 years, you talk to a lot of people. Suffice to say, there isn’t enough room in the paper to thank all of the people I want to thank.

But I do want to thank the people of Kane County for all of the kindness they showed me. Even though I am not originally from this area, they welcomed me with open arms.

All of the communities in Kane County have much to be proud of. And much of that has to do with the strong volunteer spirit within the communities.

I have had a front seat to that volunteer spirit, which translated into such lofty endeavors as the building of the Batavia Riverwalk in downtown Batavia and the installation of the Water Wonders interactive stream at North Aurora Riverfront Park.

Kane County also is lucky to have such strong leaders.

Two of those I spoke with on a regular basis were Bata-

via Mayor Jeff Schielke and North Aurora Village President Dale Berman.

I appreciate the time they gave me and the fact that they were so honest and forthright with me. They realize that honesty is truly the best policy in earning the trust of the public.

So, now it’s time to go. But I won’t be far away, and don’t be surprised to see me dropping in from time to time.

Thank you, the readers, for welcoming me into your homes, businesses and other locales. And thanks for all the fish.

Scheduled stops include Pal Joey’s (2 to 3:30 p.m.), Rivers Edge Bar & Grill (3:30 to 5 p.m.), Wilson Street Tavern (5 to 6:30 p.m.), Bulldogs Cellar Bar & Grill (6:30 to 8 p.m.) and Full Moon (8 to 9:30 p.m.). Charity fundraiser, raffle scheduled in Aurora

AURORA – The seventh annual Jason’s Hogfan Party for leuke-

mia and lymphoma research is set from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at Mike and Denise’s Pizzeria, 1760 Farnsworth Ave., Aurora.

Among the prizes for the grand raffle will be an Apple iPad, Samsung tablet, Bose music system, Trek bike, XBox, TV and an American Girl doll.

There will be a live auction for Chicago Bulls tickets and more. Dr. Rob Baiocchi, the lead cancer researcher from the Ohio State University Cancer Research Center, will again be present to speak on progress made with the donations from Hogfan parties. Jason Gould of Elburn and Oswego recovered from leukemia but died in January 2006 from a viral-related lymphoma. The fundraiser supports innovative cancer research at Ohio State University. Since he was an avid Arkansas Razorbacks fan (he had HOGFAN 7 on his license plates), his mother, Sandy Gould, decided she and his family and friends would host Hogfan parties

Treasures of the Tri-Cities

WHAT: Six historic houses of worship in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles will be showcased in “Treasures of the Tri-Cities,” an eighth annual public tour.

It’s a fact of life when living in and around nature. Sooner or later, you’re going to ask, or be asked, “What’s that smell?”

The question, by itself, is fairly innocuous. But rarely are those words uttered alone.

More often than not, they are accompanied by an interjection of one sort or another that provides, shall we say, context?

Example A: “Mmm! What’s that smell?” Possible answers here might be the subtle, sweet scent of basswood flowers, or the pungent, herbal essence of crushed bee balm.

Example B: “Eww! What the …? Answers here run a wide gamut, from skunk to snake to decomposing organic matter.

And, as we learned this past week, honey.

Yep, rich, sweet, healthful honey. That wonderful gift from Apis mellifera, the honey bee. Its distinctive aroma varies widely, depending on the bees’ predominant source of nectar.

Clover honey and orange blossom honey are two commercially available varieties that have instantly recognizable scents. In our area, honey bees produce honeys made from the nectars of many local wildflowers. Dependent on growing conditions, the flavors vary with the season and year.

Here at Hickory Knolls, we are fortunate to be able to watch honey in the making each and every day. Through a generous grant from the St. Charles Kiwanis Club, and the know-how of local beekeeper Chris Saad of Honey Trails in Wayne, we have an observation bee hive in our exhibit room.

All day, every day, hundreds of worker bees fly in and out, through a little “bee highway” tube that connects the hive to the outdoors, and visit the wildflowers that grow in our natural area.

ST. CHARLES – Those wanting the St. Charles City Council to consider their input on video gaming will have an opportunity to publicly address aldermen Monday.

As suggested last month, video gaming will be the only item on the Government Operations Committee meeting agenda. The meeting is scheduled to begin after the 7 p.m.

City Council meeting.

Mayor Ray Rogina has encouraged citizens with opinions on the topic to attend the upcoming meeting because, he said on Sept. 21, it will give them “a golden opportunity” to speak up.

The debate about video gaming is continuing in St. Charles because the City Council last month failed to support a motion to deny a proposed ordinance on the issue.

The council sent the item back to committee.

Trustees to discuss proposed addiction treatment center

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills trustees are scheduled to discuss a proposed drug and alcohol treatment center at the former Glenwood School property at their next meeting, which is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Campton Township Community Center, 5N082 Old LaFox Road.

Residents, and some who are now on the board, had opposed annexing the property at 41W400 Silver Glen Road when when it was proposed by Kiva Recovery in 2013. These include Village President Harry Blecker, who opposed it as a resident, and current trustees Laura Andersen, Susan George and Mike Millette, who voted against allowing the annexation.

Now proposed to Kane County as a luxury alcohol and drug addiction treatment center, the project is on its way to a public hearing for a special use permit, St. Charles-based attorney Andrew Kolb said. He represents Maxxam Partners LLC, the company looking to redevelop the former school property.

A hearing date has not yet been scheduled, Kolb said, but

“[The proposed project] is substantially similar; it’s a high-end treatment facility, private pay.”

They married on October 21, 1950, in Appleton, and then lived in St. Louis, MO, where Carol used her artistic and design talents working for The Hamilton Shoe Company in their advertising department. Carol, Jim and their daughters moved to Chicago, IL, Cedar Rapids, IA, Camp Hill, PA, Germantown, TN, and St. Charles, IL as Jim advanced his career with The Quaker Oats Company.

When Jim retired, Carol and he split their time between Sturgeon Bay, WI and Surprise, AZ. Eventually, Carol

and Jim relocated entirely to Arizona, living in Surprise and Prescott. Always youthful and active, they traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Germany, the Virgin Islands, and many stateside locations.

Carol was an exceptional homemaker, managing her family’s busy schedules, while participating in civic and church affairs in the communities where she lived. She was an exceptional seamstress who volunteered hundreds of hours honoring her faith by creating altar paraments and banners that beautified many churches.

Carol was a very good golfer, an avid player of Buzztime Trivia at

local establishments, and possessed a quick wit. She also had an acute appreciation for fine art, which she passed along to her daughters, and was celebrated for her annual Christmas poem. A fun loving person, she enjoyed the companionship of people of all ages. Carol’s loving dedication to family and friends will be sorely missed.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Fifteen men held in the Kane County jail face charges for their involvement in the facility’s biggest fight yet, Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said Friday.

About 33 of the 63 detainees in one of the cellblocks were involved in the altercation, which began about 11 a.m. Sunday in the common area, he said.

“This is the biggest one we’ve had here in this facility,” Gengler said.

The Kane County Adult Justice Center opened along Route 38 in St. Charles Township in 2008.

In these situations, Gengler said, it is “very difficult” for authorities to learn exactly what happened.

“Most of the time when we have something like this, we don’t get a lot of cooperation in the investigation,” he said.

The officer assigned to the cellblock called for assistance, Gengler said, noting the officers were able to gain control within minutes. At the former jail along Fabyan Parkway, a fight could go on for five to 10 minutes before an officer even became aware of it, he said.

No officers were injured in the fistfight, and only a few of the inmates suffered small scratches and bruises, Gengler said.

No weapons were found in a search of the facility, he said.

Nonprofit theater group closes after 11 years at Pheasant Run

The website included this statement from the repertory’s board of directors and staff: “Thank you to everyone at the city of St. Charles, and to all the Fox Valley Rep sponsors, donors, staff, artists, Pheasant Run and a special thanks to the thousands of patrons who have enjoyed our performances for over a decade, and to our hundreds of Performing Arts Academy students and their families. We could not have made our amazing performances without you. Thank you for sharing this journey with us.”

The closure was effective Thursday.

Tracy Whiteside, who initiated the idea for Fox Valley Rep’s Performing Arts Academy, said she is emotionally “very attached” to the space and is saddened by the closing.

“I’m heartbroken,” she said. “I invested nine years of my life building their education program.”

Fox Valley Repertory was in residence at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles for the past 11 years. In a press release, the resort thanked Fox Valley Repertory for its years of theater productions.

“We recognize that the closing of the Fox Valley Repertory Theater affects many in our community,” the statement read. “Pheasant Run Resort is committed to working with all current patrons of the

Harvest time also means safety time President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was not a noted agriculturalist, nevertheless proclaimed the first National Farm Safety and Health Week in 1944.

Realizing the importance of farming and ranching in achieving victory in World War II, FDR sought to encourage safer practices to preserve life and limb down on the farm.

The goal remains valid today; despite numerous technological advances, agriculture remains a dangerous occupation.

According to data from 2013, the most recent information available, about 500 people died that year in agriculture-related accidents, at a rate of 23.2 deaths per 100,000 workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

President Barack Obama, in proclaiming last week the 72nd National Farm Safety and Health Week, noted that farmers “face considerable hazards in the course of their daily responsibilities.”

Obama reported on efforts his administration has taken to “mitigate and reduce risks” to farmers and farm workers, particularly in the areas of hazardous chemicals, machinery, silos and grain elevators.

“I call upon the agencies, organizations, businesses and extension services that serve America’s agricultural workers to strengthen their commitment to promoting farm safety and health programs,” Obama said.

America’s commitment to farm safety has grown over the years. As hazardous situations are detected and publicized, ag leaders, organizations and the government come together to devise solutions to lessen the risk.

Grain bin safety is a case in point. After a spate of grain bin entrapment deaths in 2010, widespread effort was focused on improved prevention and rescue techniques.

Previously, after tractor rollover accidents claimed many lives, sustained efforts were directed toward creating rollover protective structures.

Collisions between motorists and slow-moving farm equipment on rural roadways prompted the Illinois Farm Bureau to produce a Rules of the Country Road pamphlet that encourages common-sense practices for sharing the road safely.

With harvest season getting started, motorists and farmers would be wise to review the 12-page pamphlet, which is available online.

Farm safety isn’t just the business of farmers; it is everybody’s business.

The U.S. economy is still missing 2.7 million jobs If the U.S. Federal Reserve is looking for reasons to increase interest rates sooner rather than later, it won’t find many in the latest employment numbers. The economy still is millions of jobs short of where it should be.

The Labor Department’s employment report for September suggests that turmoil in global financial markets may have taken a toll on the U.S. recovery. Nonfarm employers added an estimated 142,000 jobs, bringing the three-month average to 167,000 – the slowest pace of growth since 2012.

The separate household survey, which polls more than 100,000 individuals, actually shows a drop in employment: The unemployment rate held steady at 5.1 percent only because the number of people counted in the labor force also declined.

Deeper down, the report of-

fers ample evidence of what Fed Chair Janet Yellen has called “slack” in the labor market.

One indicator: The number of people stuck in part-time jobs or not actively looking for work (and hence not counted as unemployed), remained unusually large by historical standards.

If the unemployment rate included those people, it would be more than a percentage point higher: A percentage point or two represents a lot of jobs. Accounting for all the people who want full-time work or are likely to rejoin the labor force, it would take about 2.7 million jobs to reduce the unemployment rate to 4.9 percent – Fed officials’ median estimate of full employment, the point beyond which inflation tends to accelerate. The number is down from 4.6 million a year ago, but still too high: There’s also little evidence

that demand for labor is giving workers much bargaining power. U.S. auto workers, for example, are struggling to curb the share of lower-paid, entry-level jobs in their industry even as they negotiate raises. Overall, average hourly earnings for private-sector workers stood at $25.09 in September, up just 2.2 percent from a year earlier. In the decade before the 2008 recession, wage growth typically exceeded 3 percent.

Although the Fed chose last month to hold its interest-rate target near zero awhile longer, Yellen has said she expects to start removing stimulus before the end of this year. Whether or not the Fed takes the first step soon, the millions of Americans who still need jobs – and the dearth of inflationary pressures – offer reason to proceed with caution.

I’m calling in regards to Sound Off last week about road ragers.

I am not a road rager. But I take offense. I can drive faster than most people, and it’s aggravating when I have to be behind a slow car, and I’m going the speed limit. Maybe out here, instead of the city, people drive slower. I’m no city slicker, but I don’t think I’m a country bumpkin. I think I’m a normal driver.

When someone says road rage, I think that person should maybe just stay off the road.

I will take paper

People are suffering from depression. The unemployment rate is high. My suggestion is to give individuals a choice in applying for jobs – an online application vs. the choice of a paper application. Many of us do not like to answer to a machine. We prefer paper applications with control over what we write. A computer dictates how we fill in information without an option.

An online application can take hours to complete.

Do you want to know how many times I want to scream due to the frustration of wasted time on job applications? I can spend 50 hours on job applications online and not receive

one phone call. It is all a waste of time. We need to eliminate online applications to save people who are fed up. If you walk into a company with a résumé, you will hear that it is all online.

I am disgusted by this process.

We need to have a choice – online applications vs. paper. I will take paper.

Where are they dialing?

I would like to talk about mobile devices. I can’t believe how much time my grandchildren spend on their phone playing games, when they could be playing games with each other.

They play games all of the time.

They could be playing games like Monopoly. I remember pick up sticks. I think it’s wrong.

On my phone, I can dial phone numbers. I can call the police.

I can get help. Where are they dialing? I just think it’s wrong.

Kids need to spend more time with their elders.

Did they check?

A young man walks into Binny’s and purchases [more than] $3,500 worth of liquor with a stolen credit card. My question is: Did anybody at Binny’s check to see if he had any ID that matched the name on the credit card? I doubt it.

Naperville Central clicks on all cylinders to give Batavia first loss of season

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA –The Batavia football team knew coming into Friday night’s matchup with Naperville Central that mistakes needed to remain at a minimum.

Playing the best defense they had seen all season, the Bulldogs could ill-afford the turnovers they committed, falling to Naperville Central, 34-14.

Nothing about Friday night’s game was typical for Batavia this season. Quarterback Kyle Niemiec threw an early interception and, as they did all night, the Redhawks (51) took advantage.

Manny Rugamba, the Iowa-bound wide receiver, scored three touchdowns, two of which came in the first quarter to give Naperville Central a two-score lead.

“As hard as we worked and prepared for this game, I think we came out a little starry-eyed tonight, for whatever reason,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron said. “Bottom line is we can’t have turnovers like that.

We have done a good job this season of limiting mistakes and against a football team like that, you just cannot have that happen.”

“They were a little more aggressive than we have seen, and we didn’t respond well tonight. ... It’s disappointing,” Piron added.

For a moment, it looked like the Bulldogs (5-1) were going to get back in the game. Trailing, 14-7, in the second quarter, defensive end Derek Nutley sacked Redhawks quarterback Conor Joyce on fourth down.

The Redhawks, who play in the DuPage Valley Conference, recovered and drove down the field to once again find Rugamba for his third score. The speedy receiver finished with six catches for 119 yards. Redhawks senior Matt Lehmann added six catches of his own for 130 yards.

Mike Stine said. “You have to choose in this game. If you take away the run, you leave guys like Manny in single coverage and he’s a very good player.

We dissected their offense.

They put a lot of pressure on you, and our defense was able to make some big plays for us.”

Niemiec, who has found his go-to weapon Canaan Coffey this season with ease, was kept in control. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 156 yards and did not throw a touchdown pass.

His first-drive interception was by, you guessed it, Rugamba.

Joyce, on the other hand, found Rugamba three times, and each of his running backs found the end zone in Jeremiah Wiggins and Luke Brady.

The Redhawks offense combined for 433 yards, but the defense, which has now allowed just over 10 points per game in five contests, was stingy as advertised.

“They did a real good job just reading every formation we threw at them,” said Coffey, who caught nine passes for 81 yards in the loss. “They flew around and really just made it tough to get in a rhythm. When we started moving the ball, it seemed like a penalty or turnover stopped our momentum.”

As hard as it was to walk off its home field with the loss, Batavia knows it can learn from this. This is a feeling that none of the Bulldogs want to feel again, because now that they have, they know it can’t

happen again.

“You never want to lose, but now we have that feeling in our gut,” Niemiec said. “Sure, we are disappointed, but we can definitely get better from this.”

“I wish we could get back out there and play right now,” Coffey said. “This feeling hurts right now and I really just can’t wait to get back out there and battle with my brothers the rest of the season.”

Assuming Batavia handles winless Elgin next week, it will travel to face potentially unbeaten Geneva in what looks to be the Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship game in Week 8. Both the Vikings and Batavia are unbeaten in UEC River play.

Vikes exhale after Saints’ scare

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles East freshman running back Justin Jett matched the Geneva football team’s total of ineligible receiver downfield penalties in Friday’s first half.

Other than Jett’s 96 rushing yards to accompany his two scores in that span, no statistic better illustrated the early role reversal in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

Bidding to upset the unbeaten Vikings, the Saints ultimately succumbed to three turnovers before intermission. Geneva owed each of its first-half touchdowns to Saints miscues, and the momentum forged from that resilience helped turn a fivepoint halftime deficit into a 27-26 win after a nail-biting second half.

Geneva (6-0, 4-0 UEC River) took its only lead on a 27-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Sean Chambers to classmate Ryan Skibinski with 2:12 remaining. It was the only score of the second half.

“It was just maintaining composure the entire time, not letting our heads go down,” Vikings senior left tackle Matt Pawlak said.

“Coach [Rob Wicinski], he always says that he’s won more games being down at half than up at half. You just need to keep your head up. This game, like St. Charles North, all you need to do is win by one.”

Yup, a full-throat homecoming crowd witnessed another one-point game of the same vein as Geneva’s 42-41 home win against North in Week 4.

East (2-4, 2-2 UEC River) overwhelmed Geneva with its triple-option attack on the game’s opening drive, rushing three times for 76 yards in 1:06. Jett, who was promoted to varsity last week, punctuated the possession with a 39-yard scoring run, and visited the end zone on a 2-yard plunge 7:40 later.

“He’s a freshman; he’s going to make some freshman mistakes,” Saints coach Bryce Farquhar said. “But he runs hard. He’s a great back. He’s

A 23-yard touchdown pass from Zach Mitchell to Dante Macaluso gave the Saints a 2614 edge with 1:05 to go before halftime, but that’s when the game began to turn toward Geneva.

Saints placekicker Nick Candre was injured on an apparent late hit on a fake point-after attempt following

the Macaluso touchdown.

Trainers and officials tended to Candre, who was loaded onto a stretcher and left the field in an ambulance. After the game, Farquhar said the CT scans on Candre’s head were negative and he cannot play contact sports for the next two weeks.

When play resumed, Geneva struggled to move the ball while throwing into the wind and facing a vaunted East pass rush. Chambers punted the ball away, but he and Geneva took control moments later when Jett fumbled on the first play from scrimmage once possession changed.

Off to a dismal start – 1 for 10 for 26 yards – Chambers swiftly regrouped upon taking

over from the Saints’ 29-yard line with 29 seconds left before halftime. He connected on his next three attempts, culminating with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jack Wassel with six seconds before intermission.

Wicinski figured that sequence would inspire his bunch, even as East displayed what he called “total, tremendous improvement” from what he saw on early-season film.

It seemed to invigorate the Vikings on the surface, but East forced a Geneva turnover on downs inside the Saints’ 10 to begin the second half. In all, the final 24 minutes featured three turnovers on downs, two punts and a Geneva fumble before the game-winning

scoring drive.

The Vikings got the ball back for the drive on a punt that followed a fumble from Justin Taormina (188 yards) on the Geneva 27-yard line with 3:52 remaining.

East ran for 240 yards. The Saints must win each of their three remaining regular season games to become playoff eligible. Visits to Larkin and East Aurora – a combined 1-9 entering Friday – bookend a Week 8 home game against 4-2 St. Charles North.

“I’m proud of the kids. I’m really proud of our effort, where we went,” Farquhar said. “Our defense was phenomenal tonight. I can’t say enough. [Geneva] had three scores on three turnovers.”

“We busted a long one early... and that got us going a little bit,” said Joe Ryan of Bemis’ long pass to his son. “We needed something. We punted the first two series and Brett did a nice job counting the coverage up, saw the middle of the field and threw a nice ball. Those are big plays that got the momentum going our way early.”

“I just give them credit, they made the plays and we didn’t,” Fedderly said. “I’m not going to say anything about our kids. Our kids fought hard. That was a good team and they made more plays than us.”

For the Spartans, it was their second win in a row after a 1-3 start to the year.

“We got off to a good start and we know we had too,” Ryan said. “We dug ourselves a hole to start the season, and this type of score against this type of team – you don’t think these things are going to happen. Things just started going our way and it was our night.”

MAPLE PARK – Kaneland wasn’t about to let Sycamore run all over the place in its homecoming game Friday night.

So Brett Bemis and the Spartans threw all over the Knights instead.

Bemis threw for 230 yards in the Spartans’ 35-7 win over the Knights, although the senior quarterback left the game late in the third quarter with an apparent leg injury.

Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said Bemis showed what he was capable of in his 9-for11, three-touchdown performance – with all of his stats coming in the first half.

“I think the game really slowed down for him,” Ryan said, adding that he thought Bemis would be ok and will “fight through” the injury.

“They say that all the time, but you really saw it for him tonight.”

The Spartans (3-3 overall, 1-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) led 28-0 at halftime.

Matthew Coovert, who had a couple of big plays on defense and a touchdown catch in the first half, returned the kickoff 97 yards to start the second half and put a big dent in to any hope of a comeback for the Knights (3-3, 1-2).

“We talked about it how we needed that big play to spark us,” Coovert said. “It quieted them down. It was just a dagger.”

Kaneland got its touchdown early in the fourth on a 4-yard run by Jake Marczuk, who finished with 16 carries for 45 yards, plus was 10 of 24 with an interception for 107 yards passing.

The Sycamore defense spent the game swarming Marczuk, preventing him from being his normal self both running and throwing the ball.

“We got into some predictable situations there where they could come after us” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “If we catch the ball, it opens up other things. If we execute, it’s a different game.

If you get in predictable situations with the athletes they have, they can just let them loose. That’s what happens.”

The North Stars snapped a two-game losing streak by overwhelming Larkin, 55-7 in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game at Memorial Field.

Larkin took an early lead, scoring on its first possession.

The Royals capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a 10-yard TD pass from quarterback David Hibbler to AJ Hunter at the 8:32 mark.

The North Stars (4-2, 1-2) responded with a seven-play scoring drive, as Zach Mettetal connected with Griffin Hammer on a 14-yard pass to tie the game at 7 halfway through the first quarter.

A second Mettetal (14 for 18 for 131 yards) to Hammer scoring pass, this time for five yards, put North ahead 14-7 three minutes into the second quarter.

“We can’t come out slow.

We have to come out ready to play,” said North coach Rob Pomazak. “That’s one of the things we will work on.”

Lins scored his first touchdown at the 7:36 mark on a 5-yard run. The junior scored 58 seconds later on an 8-yard run. After the touchdown, the North Stars recovered an onside kick at their own 47-yard line. Four plays later, Lins ran for a 32-yard touchdown run with 4:02 left in the half. Lins rushed for 128 yards on 12 carries.

The North Stars led, 27-7, at the half.

Senior back William Duownik took over in the backfield in the second half.

Duhownik scored two TDs for the North Stars, both on 2-yard runs. The second score put North up 48-7 halfway through the third quarter and started the running clock.

Spartans struggle in shootout

In a Chicago Catholic League crossover game, the Vikings outscored St. Francis, 28-7, in the second half to come away with the victory.

Vikings junior running back Fayezon Smart ran for 248 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.

St. Francis’ Nolan Pechan did his best to match Smart’s performance, running for 179 yards and four touchdowns himself in a game that saw just one punt between the two teams.

In a game where both offenses went no-huddle and marched up and down the field almost at will in the first half, it looked like whatever team had the ball last might come away with the victory.

That would be a theme the rest of the way. Big plays were a bugaboo once again for the Rockets. Burlington Central still trailed, 6-0, with more than five minutes to play in the first half and forced a Marengo punt.

The referees ruled the punt touched a Burlington Central player and the Indians, showing good awareness, scooped it up and ran it in for a score.

More than two minutes later, Marengo, pinned inside its own 10-yard line, was set to punt again, and again fortune turned in its favor. Punter Jarrell Jackson ran for a first down, and 12 plays later, Jarren Jackson scampered in from 4 yards out to make it 20-0 in favor of Marengo.

NOTEWORTHY Almost top ’Dogs Boys and girls cross country coaches take differing approaches to DyeStat, a strong online voice on the sport that compiles rankings, results and other features throughout the season.

There was little else for the Batavia girls to do Thursday but revel, however, when the website placed the Bulldogs as the No. 19 program nationally, joining Illinois brethren Naperville North (No. 4) and Yorkville (No. 10) in the top 30.

With much of its core from last season’s 11th-place state finish in Class 3A intact, Batavia has continued making strides while grooming other younger runners along the way.

Bulldogs coach Chad Hillman held out a handful of usual starters Sept. 26 at the Bartlett Invitational in a bid to bolster the program for the stretch run.

Understandably, he called it “a good thing when you have the depth to keep pushing the front runners.”

Junior Addie Bobosky paced Batavia at Bartlett, as the team also relies on contributors from all classes, including sophomore Emma Stephens and senior Dakota Roman.

Hillman is especially enthused with the seasoned Roman’s resolve.

“She’s been a state meet regular, but she’s had some not-so-stellar state

meets,” he said. “She wants to turn that around and finish off great.”

Rosary’s Bens twins court communication

Rosary senior girls tennis players Natalie and Rebecca Bens find it both pleasurable and punny that they comprise the Royals’ No. 2 doubles tandem.

“It was pretty automatic, seeing as we’re Natalie twins,” Natalie said. “So Bens they had to pair us up.”

The St. Charles-bred duo followed the lead of their older sister, Rachel, a former Royal now studying – but not playing tennis – at the University of Dayton.

“We just tried out and we liked it,” Rebecca said.

Rebecca By extension, several Bens other family members embraced the sport soon enough. The twins tout the skills of their younger sister, Madeline, an eighth-grader looking to enroll at Rosary next fall.

The girls’ father, Gary, has been known to wield a racket, too.

“Dad’s pretty good at it, though,” Natalie said. “I think he played sometime

throughout his youth, but he wasn’t part of a team or anything.”

The Benses helped Rosary win its own invitational last month, one of several successes for the team in the second half of the regular season.

Freshman Maria Goheen, another Royals tennis legacy, also has shined as the team prepares for next week’s Girls Catholic Athletic Conference tournament and the Waubonsie Valley Sectional on Oct. 17.

“I’ve been working a lot with the girls on the mental skills and training and being aware of what their mindset is going into competitive play,” Rosary coach John Tsang said. “So we’re getting better at that. We’re going to keep reinforcing that.

“A lot of it for this athletes is knowing how to compete. When you’re in the middle of a tough match, how do you respond to pressure, right? Do you fight or flee? So we certainly want to fight, and we want to fight some more.”

The Bens twins know Tsang’s meaning when he talks about “fight,” and it isn’t to bicker with one another.

“Communication is key,” Rebecca said.

“And we’re just moving around a lot. A lot of energy.”

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word integrity as “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.”

In the entryway of our family home, there were two sayings inscribed on the walls.

One you saw as you entered, “Know thyself,” a quote by the Greek philosopher Socrates, and the other as you were leaving, “To thine own self be true,” from the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare. I think of these phrases as representing moral consistency and integrity.

These two famous sayings reminded our family every day of the importance of developing a strong sense of self and of having confidence in who we were.

Integrity is like a filter through which all of your daily life experiences pass. When you truly know yourself, your

Your decisions become clearer; actions toward others are consistent and filled with compassion; fears abate; regrets are nonexistent; and you are at peace with yourself and those around you. When you strive to have integrity in everything you think, say and do, life becomes less complicated.

Without integrity, you are one knee-jerk reaction away from your next conflict.

Too many people react to life based simply upon how they are feeling at the moment. As a result they are seen as unpredictable, moody, insensitive and selfish. When you have integrity, your actions are based upon what you

believe in and who you truly are, and – as a result – people see you as consistent, steady, dependable and wise.

Truly knowing yourself takes a little time, but it’s well worth the adventure. After all, who should know you best, but yourself. Make a daily habit of spending quiet time with yourself. Even 15 minutes a day can be sufficient to get to know the real you. Ask yourself some personal questions about life. How do you stand on world issues, religion, relationships, etc.?

Maybe you don’t like the person you are now, and the answers you get are disturbing. Then answer them again, but this time, answer them the way you would if you were the person you truly wanted to be.

After all, you should be more then just a product of nature and nurture. You spend the most time with your-

self, shouldn’t you have the greatest impact and influence on who you are? In getting to know yourself, sometimes you have to reinvent. Change yourself in ways that reflect the values you wish to emulate. Change happens the moment you decide to. All it takes is to act the way you want to be, until you are no longer acting. Example: You want to have more patience, so act as if you have all the patience in the world (in thought, word and deed). It starts to become who you are the moment you begin. Once you have shaped and defined who you are, be consistent and true to yourself.

So, what does all this have to do with monkeys? Do you remember the three monkeys who portray the saying, “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil”? If not, ask someone older; they’ll most likely

know. When you have integrity, it can influence every part of your life and leave no room for anything less. There is no limit to the transformative power of integrity.

Amazing air plants add variety to your collection Living in the Midwest, we are used to having some of the richest soils in the world. It might surprise you to learn that about 10 percent of all plants don’t grow in the ground but instead attach themselves to trees and rocks. These air plants, or epiphytes, take in water and nutrients mainly through their leaves, not their roots. In fact, many epiphytes don’t have roots; in those that do, the roots are used primarily for attachment.

There are epiphytes in several plant families, including the begonias, cacti, succulents, philodendrons, nightshades, ferns, mosses, bromeliads and orchids.

Some epiphytes, such as the miniature bromeliad, Tillandsia ionantha var. vanhyningii, can be easy to grow indoors in our dry, winter-heated houses.

T. i. vanhyningii is only 1 to 4 inches tall and about 2 inches wide, with thick, silvery leaves

LEARNING TO GROW Susan Styer that have fuzzy hairs for taking in water and nutrients. It has a long-lasting purple flower that extends an inch beyond the leaves. You often see these air plants for sale in botanical garden gift shops for around $5 each.

The biggest problem that air plant gardeners face is overwatering. We are used to planting in soil and keeping the soil moist, but this can cause an epiphyte to rot. To avoid soil overall, you can plant T. i. vanhyningii in a nonporous medium, such as gravel, or even in an empty pot! It also will grow sitting on a table in the open air or glued to a rock, shell or piece of driftwood. With time, attachment roots will grow into the support, resulting in an

unusual aesthetic look.

The best way to water T. i. vanhyningii is by misting or placing it under gentle running water to wet the leaves. In humidity lower than 50 percent, give a daily misting. You will know it’s time to mist when the leaves become less plump and their edges slightly curl. Once a month, mist with ¼ dilute liquid or water-soluble fertilizer for houseplants.

In the winter, place your T. i. vanhyningii on a table near a sunny window where the temperature remains above about 40 degrees Fahrenheit. In warm weather above 60 degrees Fahrenheit, move your air plant outdoors in filtered light; it may put on a growth spurt and make a bloom spike!

Try your hand at this easy air plant to add some variety to your collection.

The hotel staff told me that they all practiced tai chi. So did their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. We have to take seriously any practice that has persisted for centuries among millions of people.

Dr. Wallace: I’ve been dating this guy for about two months.

He always picks me up at my house, so he has met my parents many times. Last night after he picked me up, we drove by his house because he forgot his wallet, which contained his driver’s license.

The only real danger in going barefoot is the possibility of cuts and punctures.

Dear Dr. K: I have fibromyalgia, and my doctor recommends that I start tai chi exercises. Like any exercise, it will take time.

So I want to be sure it really might help me. Can it?

Dear Reader: One of the many practices from Asia that have spread to the West in the past 40 years is tai chi. It is often described as “meditation in motion.”

I think it could just as well be called MEDICATION in motion. This mind-body practice appears to help treat or prevent many health problems.

Tai chi is a low-impact, slow-motion exercise. As you practice it, you move fluidly through a series of motions. The motions are named for animal actions, such as “white crane spreads its wings,” or for martial arts moves.

As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention on your bodily sensations.

A tai chi session usually starts with a warm-up to help you loosen your muscles and joints and focus on your breath and body. Then you proceed to tai chi “forms,” which are sets of movements.

A tai chi session also usually includes “qigong.”

Qigong consists of gentle breathing sometimes combined with movement.

The idea is to help relax the mind and mobilize the body’s energy.

Tai chi can be easily adapted for anyone, whether you are fit, confined to a wheelchair or recovering from surgery. It addresses the key components of fitness: muscle strength, flexibility, balance and, to a lesser degree, aerobic conditioning.

Combined with standard treatment, tai chi may also be helpful for several medical conditions, including fibromyalgia. In fact, a large study

When my fiancee recently told me we are having a child, I hoped my attitude would change. It hasn’t, and at times it has gotten worse.
