Having just celebrated my – cough – 40th birthday, I was in awe of Fran Gustafson as I watched her celebrate her 100th at Delnor Glen assisted living center in St. Charles this week.

The former physical education teacher walks every day and recently did a video with her family, where she spent hours recanting family stories from the past century.

As she stood up from her private lunch with her family, she looked around and saw about 100 people each holding a balloon to be released outdoors in her honor. “I love people!” she said.

I hope in 60 years, I am just as sharp and physically fit as Fran.

She is an inspiration.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – As members of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District waited for dispatch to sound the start of a machine entrapment drill Thursday afternoon, Chief Kelly Callaghan said training exercises are common for his team.

But he and training officer Lt. Mike Huneke acknowledged Thursday’s technical rescue team drill at the Lafarge gravel pit was different.

“This is pretty unique,” Huneke said. “We really jumped on the opportunity.”

Plant manager Doug Averkamp said he invited the fire district to the work site, which is at 1S194 Route 47 near Elburn, because in his industry you always have to be prepared.

“Safety is our top priority,” he said.

Upon arrival, the first responders climbed a series of stairs on a piece of machinery to reach a rescue mannequin several stories high.

While the mannequin – which weighed about 125 to 150 pounds – wasn’t trapped in the equipment, the scenario gave the emergency responders a

“It’s not like we can come back tomorrow and do it again,” Huneke said.

Conducting drills on site rather than at a training facility gives first responders a

chance to see what they might encounter during a real-life situation, such as uneven ground, he said.

“It tests us, and it tests them,” Huneke said, referring to the Lafarge employees.

Workers cooperated with the drill by guiding the emergency vehicles to the site – “You could get lost in here,” Callaghan said – and directing them to the mannequin.

In entrapment situations, Huneke said, the workers

would be valuable because they know how the machinery works and could therefore help the first responders free the trapped person. Units from Batavia and Kaneville also participated in the drill. Batavia brought a ladder truck – a piece of equipment Elburn doesn’t yet have – and Kaneville was brought in because the drill was going to include a helicopter, Callaghan said. The helicopter was canceled because of forecasted storms.

COVER STORY COUNTDOWN TO MODERNIZATION Kane County officials await installation of a new court case management system

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Kane County Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell is looking forward to the day his office won’t need black suitcases from WalMart.

The inexpensive luggage is used to transfer about 26,000 to 29,000 court files each month from his office in St. Charles to various courtrooms in the county, such as those at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township and the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva. The transfer process for each file includes one day each for pulling and reshelving the paperwork, but Hartwell said it should be unnecessary once the county implements a new court case management system.

“I can’t wait,” Hartwell said in mid-September, during the kickoff of the project.

The County Board approved a multi-million dollar contract with Tyler Technologies in August.

The original project budget was $12.6 million when discussions began in 2010, but the negotiated price with Tyler Technologies was $6.02 million. The agreement also included project-related travel expenses and a 10 percent project contingency for a total price of $6,866,582.

Because there are other costs, such as project staff, Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock said the fiveyear project budget is about $10 million.

“It’s a big investment,” he said.

But it’s one that County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said will have long-lasting effects.

“The usefulness of this system will be felt over decades, multi-generations,” he said, noting he is “thrilled” by the potential of having a best-inclass system.

AN 18-MONTH WAIT Installing the new system isn’t as easy as buying soft-

ware from an office supply store and downloading it onto a computer, officials said.

Rather, they said, it will be a complex, 18-month process.

Texas-based Tyler Technologies was one of 11 vendors that applied for the job, Fahnestock said. He said that list was narrowed to four and, eventually, to two. Stakeholders in the county’s judicial system recommended Tyler Technologies, Fahnestock said. He said they struggled with the decision because both finalists had different strengths.

“I think they’ve got it exactly right in their selection of Tyler,” Lauzen said. “Tyler’s done this hundreds of times with systems much larger than ours.”

Indeed. The company’s website lists such clients as New Mexico, Minnesota and Clark County in Nevada.

“We should be easy for them,” Fahnestock said.

INCREASED EFFICIENCIES Once the new system is in place, officials expect greater efficiencies and more productivity.

“The addition of the attorney manager product will improve how our office, the circuit clerk and the state’s attorney’s office interact, removing much of the paper handling and duplication of efforts,” Public Defender Kelli Childress wrote in an email.

“Beyond the inter-office benefits, file management within our office will be much simpler. I expect from early on we will see a marked rise in productivity.”

The public also should notice a difference.

For example, Hartwell said, lawyers will be able to file complaints electronically instead of having to file a paper copy at the circuit clerk’s office. Therefore, he said, lines likely will be shorter for those there for other matters, such as to pay fees.

The immediate access to information among the various offices tied to the courts also

should help in serving orders of protection, Hartwell said.

Now, he said, the judge signs the order, hands it to a clerk, who then gets it to the sheriff’s office so the other party can be notified. This potentially day-long process will be instantaneous with the new system, he said.

In addition to serving orders of protection, the sheriff’s office holds almost all of the warrants issued by the courts, Undersheriff Pat Gengler wrote in an email. From a corrections standpoint, he added, the case information about each inmate is housed in the clerk’s system.

“We are a big user/supplier of information for the courts,” Gengler wrote. “We use the current Jano system daily, so having a upgraded system will allow the sheriff’s office to be more efficient.”

With the new system freeing up his staff’s time, Hartwell said they will be able to focus on other projects, including scanning old documents and organizing the evidence his office is required to keep.

Until then, Fahnestock said, there will be a lot of work ahead.

BATAVIA – Melinda Kintz of Batavia has been named the executive director of Batavia United Way, bringing an extensive nonprofit and social services background to her new role, the board of directors announced Thursday in a statement.

Kintz has experience b u i l d i n g a Melinda Kintz social-needs program in Batavia and rallying community support for it.

with CDC to help monitor for Ebola KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Kane County Health Department is coordinating efforts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other public health agencies now that the first diagnosed case of Ebola is in the United States, according to a health department news release.

“It is important to remember the Ebola virus does not spread easily and, though one individual has been diagnosed in the United States, there have been no reported cases of people becoming infected while here,” the release states.

The virus is spread by direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who has symptoms; through objects or surfaces

contaminated by bodily fluids of an infected person, such as clothing and bedding; and by contact with a person who recently died from Ebola. It is not spread through the air, by water or by food.

The CDC recommends avoiding nonessential travel to areas affected by the Ebola outbreak.

People can protect themselves by following these guidelines, according to the release: • Avoid contact with blood and bodily fluids of those who are ill.

• Do not handle items that have come in contact with an infected person’s blood or bodily fluids.

• Use protective clothing – gloves, gowns, masks and eyewear – when caring for sick people.

• Monitor your health for 21

days after leaving the affected area.

• Seek medical care immediately if you develop symptoms of Ebola. Symptoms include fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, lack of appetite and abnormal bleeding. Some might have a rash, red eyes, hiccups, cough, sore throat, chest pain, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or bleeding inside or outside the body.

In addition to the CDC, the county health department is coordinating efforts with the Illinois Department of Public Health, area local health departments, hospitals and medical facilities to monitor for the Ebola virus.

WAYNE – The current owner of the 131-year-old Dunham Castle has big plans for the site, but he needs the village of Wayne’s approval to make them a reality.

Jeffrey Bussean, president and founder of Bussean Real Estate, LLC, purchased the castle for $1 million in October 2013. The castle, at 5N648 Dunham Road in Wayne, is in need of severe repairs and renovations to the estimated tune of $6 million, Bussean wrote in a news release. Bussean plans to bear the entire expense of the project and eventually donate the castle to the village, but there are conditions attached.

She especially loved the arrival of a new baby cherishing the times she could “just sit and quietly hold an infant.” Our Grandma Jean was a strong woman, a hard-working woman, a woman who showed her love through support, good deeds, advise, examples and warm caring.

She shared her life’s adventures with a story teller’s glee. Telling enhanced stories of living through the depression, reading childhood books by kerosene lamps, that she had to weekly clean. Her stories of a woman’s life at home during WWII raising children alone and burning 14 tons of coal to keep the babies warm spoke volumes of fortitude and fears. Grandma Jean left her family with an array of life experiences, heart-filled memories and albums of family photos. The opening page a photo of her Grandmother Jandeau dated 1916.

Jeanne joins immediate family members, husband, Mike; daughter, Rita; and son, Stephen.

She is survived by sons, Mike and Scott; daughters, Nanette and Sally; along with 25 grandchildren and great great grandchildren ranging in age from 3 months to 54 years old.

Jeanne was born in Aurora on August 22, 1923. The third daughter

of Louise and John A. Anderson, she lived her entire life in the Fox River Valley. She was raised in the Catholic faith, attending Our Lady of Angels School as a child.

Marriage in 1940 brought her to St. Charles as a lifelong member of St. Patrick Church. She began working in retail sales when her children no longer needed Mom helping at school. As a collector of old things, her favorite job was at the thrift store, sharing the fun of a find with patrons. Always aware of the love her family shared with her, she pre-planned her passing and left us with these words.

“Do not stand by my grave and weep; I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the sweep uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circle flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand by my grave and cry I am not there - I did not die.”

Grandma Jean will be in our hearts for many generations to tell her stories, teach by her examples, and always love our babies, at every age.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland School District 302 need not be a stepping stone for its next superintendent, according to an official from BPW and Associates, the search firm tasked with identifying candidates for the open position.

Mark Friedman, a BWP representative said it is a “pretty big district, K-12.”

“It could be a destination for someone,” he said.

Friedman joined other representatives of the search firm Thursday night at a community forum at Kaneland Harter Middle School. The officials answered questions from a handful of residents who were taking part in the process of finding a permanent replacement for Jeff Schuler, the previous superintendent who left to become the superintendent

at Wheaton Warrenville District 200.

Renee Goier is serving as the district’s interim superintendent.

Three school board members – the president, Cheryl Krauspe, the vice president Teresa Witt and another member, Pedro Rivas – were in attendance at the forum.

Residents provided feedback for the BWP officials, telling them what they wanted in a superintendent.

Dan Nagel, who regularly attends board meetings, said the superintendent should believe in transparency and be ready to answer some tough questions about finance.

Renee Dee, the founder of P.E.A.K. for Kids and a key player in the district’s fight against bullying, said the superintendent should understand the distinct issues Kaneland faces – such as the fact that it is made up of stu-

dents from nine communities. She said the successful candidate should help work with local leaders to help attract new businesses to the nearby towns, and the superintendent should be a leader respected by both the school board and the administrative team.

Montgomery residents Melissa Anderson and Susan Buerke said it’s important that there be a unity in the district, not that schools, such as the Montgomery-based McDole, be “McDole in the Kaneland district.”

Friedman said there would be “a lot of interest” in the position. It is a matter of how many candidates would be able to fit the description desired by Kaneland residents.

A survey is up at the district’s website – www.kaneland.org – and Friedman said the results of the survey ultimately will be posted.

Worry about Ebola in West Africa not Texas BOOMBERG NEWS Health officials have known for weeks that it would happen, and now it has: A case of Ebola has been diagnosed in the United States. More such cases are to be expected, in others who travel to the U.S. from infected areas in Africa without realizing they’ve picked up the virus.

Ebola is a horrible sickness that has already killed more than 3,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. But a single case in the U.S. is no cause for

alarm. U.S. hospitals are capable of handling infectious diseases of every kind, and public-health workers are well equipped to monitor a patient’s recent contacts. In other words: In the U.S., it’s easy enough to stop Ebola in its tracks.

This is not the case in the afflicted countries of western Africa. Ebola was able to come to the U.S. because Ebola remains out of control in Liberia. And it is in Liberia and its afflicted neighbors that Americans – and people everywhere else – need to focus their concern.

The primary cause of this enormous Ebola outbreak has been inadequate health care. The virus itself is no more transmissible or deadly than it was in any previous outbreak. In Nigeria, for example, health care workers were able to bring the disease under control relatively quickly. They identified the problem early and got patients into hospitals equipped with protective gear and other critical supplies.

In Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, in contrast, health care systems that

were already weak have practically disintegrated in the face of Ebola. Health officials now expect to see many more deaths there from other conditions as well, as people cannot get proper care for malaria, HIV-AIDS or tuberculosis, for example.

Hope is growing that Ebola can be brought under control by mid- to late January, as a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention model suggests. The world took its time responding to the crisis, but many countries and organizations are now coming in with money – more than

$550 million – and hundreds of fresh doctors, nurses and other volunteers.

If, in the next three months, 70 percent of Ebola patients can be properly treated and isolated, then the number of new cases can finally start to fall.

It’s too soon to count on that happening. But if it does, it’s obvious what will be needed next: The foundations must be laid for strong and sturdy health care systems in western Africa, prepared to quickly put down the next outbreak – whether Ebola or another infectious disease.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

GENEVA – When a survivor of domestic violence is in shelter, she likely will need some legal advice from a family law attorney – but 38 counties in Illinois have no family law attorneys and 34 only have up to five attorneys with that specialty.

Enter Lt. Governor Sheila Simon, whose staff worked with the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence to create a pilot project – Virtual Legal Clinic – to provide free legal consultation to survivors of domestic violence via web cam technology.

Simon, an attorney who used to prosecute domestic violence cases, spoke Thursday at the Kane County Bar Association’s Annual Technology in Practice Seminar at Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva.

Although currently lieutenant governor, Simon is the Democratic challenger to incumbent Republican Judy Baar Topinka.

75 horses in need of good homes

By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com HAMPSHIRE – There are 75 abandoned horses in Hampshire in desperate need of good homes, and time is of the essence, according to a local animal rescue organization.

Barrington-based Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society has teamed up with Hands and Hooves of Chicago to find homes for 75 American Quarter horses in just a few weeks. The horses have been living in inadequate conditions for the past two years, society president Donna Ewing said.

“We have less than a month to get 75 of these horses off the leased property and into permanent homes,” she stated in a recent news release.

The horses’ previous owner, once a leader in breeding American Quarter horses, fell on difficult times after the deaths of both her husband and daughter, Ewing said.

The former owner eventually lost the family farm and was unable to maintain the horses’ care.

The animals were relocated to a leased equine facility in Hampshire, which is not big enough to house all 75.

For two years, 30 of the horses have been confined in stalls and the remaining were left

She added the two organizations are doing the best they can, but the man hours and costs involved make for a daunting task. Ewing estimated it was costing the organizations $30,000 to care for the horses.

“We’re asking for anyone who has room in their barns and their hearts for these horses ...” Ewing said, adding the animals will need owners

with previous horse experience.

Those interested in donating to the Hampshire Quarter Horses Rescue Fund or adopting one of the horses should contact the rescue society at 847-382-0503. Adoption applications can be found at www. harpsonline.org. The horses range in age from 6 to 27 years old. Ewing said younger horses will go for a minimum bid of $500 and older horses $100.

Law requires psychiatric evaluations to be shared in trials

“We are the leader in something good that improves the criminal justice system,” Jones said. “There is no statute in the country that does what we are doing.”

If each side’s experts do not agree, but the judge cannot see the basis of their opinion, justice and transparency are not served, he said.

“One says he’s fit; the other one says he’s not fit. We

have a contrary opinion – so, ‘Here’s my videotape, and here is why I think that he is not fit, based on this videotape,’ ” Jones said. “A judge is going to give weight to more background.”

The law also requires the disclosure of notes and other evaluations.

Jones said in the case of the 2012 theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, defense experts said the accused James Holmes was unfit to stand trial, but they did not want to turn over their forensic interviews with him.

ordered then to turn it over because they were relying on that as the basis for their opinion, Jones said.

“In Illinois, it would have been presumptively turned over,” Jones said. “As a result of this law, it will be automatic. There will be no court hearing for it; they just have to turn it over.”

The reform, which was enacted late last month, was inspired by a series of articles in the “National Law Journal” and the “Chicago Daily Law Bulletin,” and is expected to serve as a national model for best practices in the field.

ST. CHARLES – The former owner of a petting zoo charged with animal cruelty appeared in court Thursday regarding a civil case, which also involves horses.

Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin, owner of the now-defunct Mini Zoo Crew, represented herself before Kane County Circuit Court Judge James Murphy at the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

Murphy gave Fiebelkorn 35 days in which to file court papers responding to the claim and scheduled the next court date for Nov. 20.

Fiebelkorn and other defendants are named in a lawsuit seeking more than $50,000 for plaintiff Korine Buffini, 43, of Belvidere.

Court papers allege that the defendants were negligent and violated both the Animal Control Act and Domestic Animals Running at Large Act, which require animals’ owners to keep them from escaping their enclosure.

According to the lawsuit, Buffini is permanently injured and now disabled resulting from a crash in June 2013, when she hit three horses running loose on Route 20.

The horses escaped from Britannia Hills, the Hampshire farm where Fiebelkorn and others kept horses, according to the suit. It also is where nearly 100 sick and starving horses, donkeys, rabbits and other animals were impounded from Fiebelkorn’s Mini Zoo Crew, her traveling zoo.

Misdemeanor cruelty and neglect charges still are pending against Fiebelkorn. A hearing in that case is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

The other defendants in the case are Michelle Hamiel of Maple Park and Carl Niemann, owner of Britannia Hills. Neither appeared in court, nor have attorneys of record listed.

Buffini’s attorney Bart Galvin said he could file court papers seeking default judgments against the other defendants.

Different takes on targeting Some wish there was more time to adjust to new rule

The new rule itself offers one absolute.

“If you’re the beneficiary of the call, you’re happy,” Upstate Eight Conference and Metro Suburban Conference supervisor of officials Octavio Herrera said. “If you’re the guy whose team is whistled, you’re not.”

Introduced by the National Federation of State High School Associations this year, the rule hasn’t overly miffed too many helmet- and headset-clad people through the first five weeks of the IHSA season.

Resulting in a 15-yard penalty – and possible ejection if the maneuver is deemed flagrant – the rule defines targeting as “an act of taking aim and initiating contact to an opponent above the shoulders with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulders.”

It’s a trickle-down effect from similar recent additions to the NFL and NCAA rulebooks in the ongoing pursuit to limit serious head and neck injuries.

Although coaches sometimes feel the rule blends closely with illegal helmet contact or targeting a defenseless player, Herrera describes it as additional criteria officials can look for in monitoring defenses.

It’s all in the name of safety

“They’ve’ got, like, 12 names for it, and they don’t even like to use six of them or something,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “They don’t like calling it whatever, but that’s been a point of emphasis. But I haven’t really noticed a real change in how things have been called.”

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly agrees. Although referees twice penalized DeKalb for targeting in last week’s game, Fedderly figured the same yellow flag would have flown when the teams met a year ago.

Marmion coach Dan Thorpe goes as far as to deem officials’

discretion to date “tremendous refereeing,” even in the freshman games he has seen.

“Enforce rules,” Thorpe said. “Don’t antiquate the rules; don’t overreact. Just be confident as a referee. Make the tough call and make the right call.”

That’s the goal of any official in a profession that typically guarantees no better than a 50 percent approval rating.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron simply wishes he and his brethren statewide might have been afforded more time to prepare.

Unaware the NFHS introduced the rule in February, he, like many, did not get his first look at the new criteria until the summer.

As Piron noted, this particular rule wasn’t something as concrete as moving the kickoff line up, another recent safety maneuver.

Piron said when officiating crews visited offseason scrimmages, “They basically made the statement, ‘If we believe it’s a penalty, we will call it, where in the past we erred on the side of we better make 100 percent sure it was [intentional].’ So that’s a huge shift.”

Piron added: “Some of those things you could adjust to in your camp, but this was a significant rule change that I think will require coaches to institute specific protocols and practice strategies beginning with the freshman level, and even in their middle schools.”

A late defensive penalty in Batavia’s season opener afforded Oswego an untimed town to end the game. The Panthers capitalized, scoring the game-winning touchdown to cap a wild finish in a 40-38 win.

Piron did not cite that game in assessing officiating to this point, but viewed last week’s win against St. Charles North as inconsistent – with both calls and non-calls – compared to earlier weeks.

“Really, to expect kids to be able to change something they’ve been doing for years in a matter of weeks is pretty difficult,” Piron said. “So that’s why you’re going to continue to

Herrera concedes that “sometimes the mechanics that the players use to tackle gets away from them.”

Coaches certainly would agree, but many also believe that maintaining a low tackling target is a time-honored tactic that won’t be affected by the emphasis on targeting.

As Thorpe and his assistants preach, “Keep your head on the football.”

Kaneland defensive coordinator Keith Snyder is adamant that it’s equally unsafe to the defender to hit high than for a ballcarrier or defenseless player to absorb such a blow.

As concussion and head injury concerns color some parents’ wariness about allowing their sons to play, that notion takes precedence.

“One, it really isn’t sound tackling, and two, it really is dangerous,” Snyder said. “We can’t afford to lose any kids to concussions. We’ve got to keep every kid we have safe.”

For the first time since the Upstate Eight Conference’s 2010 inception, the Geneva-St. Charles East game will not pit Rob Wicinski against a branch of his coaching tree.

Wicinski’s former Geneva assistant, Mike Fields, stepped down from his Saints post after the 2013 season. In-house candidate Bryce Farquhar earned the promotion, and is plenty familiar with Wicinski’s Vikings after seven seasons as a lower-level East coach.

“Just looking on from the outside, he’s always run a well-disciplined program,” Farquhar said. “It’s an upper-level program, for sure, and a program you always want to set your expectations high to beat.”

The buzz in the stands

Has Kaneland really lost two conference games in a row, and three overall?

In past seasons, the Knights and Spartans have met with perfect seasons and/or NI Big 12 East titles on the line. Although it’s mathematically possible Kaneland still could rally to force a tie atop the league standings, playoff eligibility is of utmost concern here – for both teams.

The marquee matchup Dangerous Sycamore speedster Dion Hooker scored a go-ahead, 11-yard rushing touchdown early in the second half of last season’s win against Kaneland, his first action coming off an injury. He enters this game healthy and well-rested, taking a breather after running for 183 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of last week’s 42-0 romp against conference crossover foe Ottawa.

The Knights have proven susceptible to the run during their losing streak. Yorkville’s Michael Kurtz rushed for 310 yards and four scores in Week 4, while Illinois-bound DeKalb star Dre Brown collected 149 yards and a touchdown in last week’s 37-34 win.

A handful of Kaneland players have lined up against Hooker a few times before – namely senior linebacker Danny Hammermeister – but the Knights also must be ready for the rest of Spartans coach Joe Ryan’s deep playbook.

“He always seems to have a new wrinkle that we haven’t seen on film all season, and his kids are always well-coached,” Kaneland defensive coordinator Keith Snyder said.

“They’re technically sound, they don’t beat themselves, and they’re just really good at what they do.”

Best-case scenario for the Knights Kaneland clicks behind a spread attack that has a history of scoring against Sycamore.

Before last season, the Knights averaged nearly 32 points in their past three wins in the series.

In the DeKalb game, senior receiver Connor Fedderly set a program record with 294 receiving yards on 12 receptions, eclipsing former Knights standouts Casey Crosby, P.J. Fleck and Jody Henningson. Fedderly’s father and coach, Tom, said Connor Fedderly “idolized” many of those players and kept their pictures on his bedroom wall.

Led by quarterback Jake Marczuk and an offensive line anchored by tackles Jake Gomes and Tristan Kinder, Kaneland pushed the Barbs late in the game while gaining 464 yards of total offense.

Best-case scenario for the Spartans Mobile quarterback Brett Bemis adds a running dynamic to complement an effective Hooker and fellow running back Derek Massier as the Knights struggle to consistently get stops.

“We obviously like the ground attack and to keep possession,” Ryan said. “That’s what we did [Sept. 26] until the game got out of hand. But their defense is really good, too.

So we’re going to have to play really good defense, really good special teams and really

good offense.”

The X-factor Kaneland completed the first 18 games of its NI Big 12 East existence without a loss until the Spartans’ visit to Peterson Field in Week 8 of 2013. Sycamore’s 31-21 victory also snapped the Knights’ 36-game regular-season winning streak.

Sycamore players insist there was no invincible aura about their longtime rivals before.

Now that the Spartans have the reigning upper hand, they’re just as certain they can’t get complacent.

“They’re a good team. We can’t let their record reflect how they are as a team,” Hooker said. “They have a losing record, but they are always a solid team. You have to come out strong, come out confident.”

Kevin Druley’s prediction: Kaneland 35, Sycamore 31 Kaneland hasn’t lost four successive games since the first term of Bill Clinton’s presidency. Behind a group of players not born until Clinton’s second term, Kaneland buckles down defensively in key spots while Marczuk keeps making plays.

“Jake’s been improving, and so has our offensive line,” Tom Fedderly said. “When we’re able to have 460-something yards of offense, a lot of it goes to the guys up front.

That’s allowing our skills guys to do what they do.”

“The players realize that this is a little bit different opponent, and any time you’re playing one of these Tri-Cities teams, there’s a little bit extra spark,” Wicinski said. “They know them a little bit more personally, and it’s a closer to home type of a game. So far, so good. They’ve had good energy.”

It could be another big day for the Spartans’ defense. St. Laurence has scored just 43 points in its past three games.

Batavia bests St. Charles East with singles sweep

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – With the heavens starting to open up and the skies darkening, the picture still was cloudy as to who would win in Thursday’s girls tennis meet between Batavia and St. Charles East that went down to the wire.

With Batavia leading the meet 3-2 with most of the matches over with, the middle courts were action packed with the No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles both going to three sets.

Senior No. 2 singles player Ashlyn Turner secured the 4-3 victory for host Batavia, ensuring a singles sweep for the Bulldogs after coming from behind, winning her match against East’s Kelsey Straumann, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.

East dropped the No. 1 doubles match, 6-2, 6-1, to Batavia’s Julianne Robinson and Sydnee Unterberg but swept the rest, with the No. 2 pairing of Katie Downing and Emily Hautzinger overcoming a tough challenge to win, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

Downing said positive encouragement helped them overcome a tough second-game loss.

“We were reminding each other and communicating with each other that we need to keep our energy up,” Downing said.

“Stay aggressive and encourage each other, don’t put each other down ever.”

“We had a big win today at second doubles, which was huge for those girls,” Bulman said. “They went three sets with Geneva, had a tough loss with [St. Charles] North, and come out today to beat Batavia.”

Nora McClure led the way for Batavia’s singles, defeating counterpart Olivia Gapuz, 6-1,

6-0.

McClure was business as usual, winning many points by outlasting Gapuz at the back line and was the first one off the court in 45 minutes.

Afterward, McClure was pleased with her service game in the match.

“Today I knew it was going to be a consistency game,” McClure said. “I knew I had to get my first serve in. I’ve been struggling with that, so I was

really happy with my serve today.”

Kate McClure completed the singles trifecta for the Bulldogs, defeating Haley Jeanes, 6-1, 6-2.

The No. 3 East doubles tandem of Sonia Ost and Jenna Patzer won, 6-0, 6-3, while East’s No. 4 doubles pairing of Allison Smith and Grace Esler won, 6-4, 6-3.

Alexa Popiel and Kate Hafner won their No. 5 doubles match, 6-2, 6-1, for the Saints.

With the UEC tournament next Friday, both coaches were looking forward to a potential rematch and said they would be chasing Geneva.

Batavia coach Brad Nelson was pleased with the result and speculated about the chance to play the Saints again in the tournament.

“East has a nice team and they did a great job, especially at third and fourth today,” Nelson said. “We had a great match with second singles, second doubles. We’re going to be neck and neck with them. It makes for an interesting tournament, definitely. There are really no gimmes when it gets to the semifinals.

“Today it was nice for our singles players to go out and get it done, take care of business, and our one doubles team played very well today. It was a big win for them.”

Both coaches were resigned to believe that they likely will be competing for second place

with Geneva’s depth.

Bulman said the tournament would be Geneva’s “show to lose,” while Nelson said the Vikings would be “nearly impossible to overcome.”

The prospect of playing each other again was appealing to Bulman, as well.

“The second-place battle between us and Batavia is going to be good,” Bulman said. “It’s going to be a dogfight all the way to the end. I feel really good about the depth of our lineup. I think our third and fourths can really do well at conference.”

With the doubles pairings playing well heading into the final stretch of the season for the Saints, Hautzinger said keeping the same approach would be key to handling the pressure of the conference tournament.

“I feel like we just have to be aggressive, keep the mental game going,” Hautzinger said. “You can’t lose your mental game.”

The seeding meeting for the tournament will be Wednesday, with Nora McClure hopeful she would gain a higher one after her victory, saying the field would be tough.

“From playing first singles last year to playing first singles this year, the competition has really gone up this year with almost every school,” McClure said. “You can never take anything for granted and you have to play your heart out in every point.”

Cary-Grove’s tenacious defense, unforced errors doom Vikings

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva girls volleyball team was unable to overcome Cary-Grove’s tenacious defense and its own unforced errors Thursday night as the Vikings lost a nonconference match in three games, 27-25, 16-25, 25-22.

The Trojans’ Karisa Wilcynski and Brianne Coffey combined for 36 digs, with Coffey finishing with 23.

Service errors also plagued the Vikings. The team committed 13 in the match. “[Cary-Grove] had a great

defensive effort. Our team has never been dug that many times before,” Geneva coach Annie Seitelman said. “The hitters were getting a little frustrated. I thought they did a nice job of rebounding back and taking some big swings.”

Said Cary-Grove coach Patty Langanis about her team’s defense: “They are going to fight tooth and nail to keep the ball in play, and I thought tonight they did a wonderful job. Brianne Coffey, our libero, just gives everything she has.”

Cary-Grove (16-5) held the lead during most of the first set. Geneva (15-4) staged a late

rally, coming back from a 2420 deficit to tie the game at 24 on a Grace Loberg kill. The Trojans responded with an Abigail Schebel kill to retake the lead, 25-24.

The senior outside hitter had a match-high 11 kills.

Viking Ally Mullen retied the game with a kill. But that was as close as Geneva came, as Cary-Grove scored its last two points on Vikings hitting and serving errors.

“We just had too many unforced errors,” Seitelman said.

“When you have a good rally and then there is an error, which can cause a change in

the momentum.”

Momentum swung Geneva’s way in the second set.

Cary-Grove tied the game early at 6 on another unforced Geneva error. The Vikings retook the lead on a Loberg kill, one of nine for the match. Geneva never relinquished the lead and finished the game on a 12-4 run.

“Geneva was really connecting well and running a dynamic offense [in the second set]” Langanis said. “Our block was late and none existent at times and then our offense started to falter.”

The teams traded the lead

early in the third set. The Trojans took the lead for good at 7-6 and gradually pulled away.

Geneva again staged a late rally. The Vikings trailed, 2418, but reeled off four straight points, the last on an Ally Barrett kill. Schebel ended the comeback with a kill to score the winning point.

Kyley Thompson smacked nine kills for Geneva, while teammates Mullen and Maddie Courter chipped in six each.

Mikayla Lanasa earned 11 assists for the Vikings, and Kelsey Wicinski added 16 digs.

Allison Splitt had five kills for Cary-Grove.

Kaneville Classics 4-H Club elects officials at first meeting KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The Kaneville Classics 4-H Club had its first meeting of the year in September. During the meeting, club members elected new officials and discussed upcoming events.

The newly elected officials are Sam Lederman as president; Dylan Lederman as vice president; Hayden Ragatz as secretary; Erica Johnson as treasurer; Caitlyn Bjorkman as reporter; and Nick Lederman and Josh Childress as rec leaders.

One of the club’s upcoming events is 4-H Fun Night, an annual event that is open to the public, as well as all 4-H club members in Dupage, Kane and Kendall counties. The 4-H Fun Night will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Prairie Events Center Atrium at the Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. The event is free.

Throughout the year, 4-H Club members plan activities, such as the 4-H Fun Night, the Hot Cocoa Sales fundraiser during the holidays, International Night and the Pork Chop Dinner.

At the end of the year, the Kaneville Classics, along with other local 4-H clubs, present projects at the Kane County Fair. Some of the projects that 4-H members can participate in include welding, cake decorating, sewing, gardening, raising animals, aerospace, visual arts and more.

Every county in Illinois has a 4-H program, which is operated through the University of Illinois Extension, states a news release. Membership with the 4-H club is open to those ages 8 to 18, and the Cloverbud program is geared toward children ages 5 to 7.

Former St. Charles mayor takes Ice Bucket Challenge KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Former St. Charles Mayor Fred Norris in September took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in front of the St. Charles Municipal Building.

Norris took the challenge for the Golden K Kiwanis Club of St. Charles.

The challenge was part of the campaign to raise funds for the ALS Association, in which those challenged were called to donate to the association, have a bucket of water dumped on them – or both.

According to www.alsa.org,

more than $114 million has been raised through the campaign.

According to a news release, Norris has a personal connection to ALS. His sister, Joy, died in June 2006, a few days short of her 68th birthday of ALS in Dallas.

She graduated from St. Charles High School in 1956 and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University in 1960, married in Texas and had three sons.

Norris wanted to do something to honor both his sister and help those with ALS, according to the release.

I don’t want to be around her and have told my father this, but he doesn’t accept or respect my feelings. Being around them causes stress on my marriage because my husband doesn’t want to be around her either, and we don’t want her around our children.

Bleak reality of Alzheimer’s may be brighter in future Dear Doctor K: My mother has Alzheimer’s disease. What should I expect in the coming years?

Dear Reader: It’s impossible to predict exactly how Alzheimer’s disease will affect someone.

Symptoms of the disease, and how quickly they progress, can vary widely from person to person. In some people, for reasons we don’t understand, the disease progresses very slowly.

However rapidly Alzheimer’s disease progresses, it generally unfolds in five stages: • Stage 1. Memory problems begin. The person may misplace valuable objects. Their performance at work or in social situations begins to suffer. They may have more trouble expressing their thoughts.

Personality changes also begin. A person may become withdrawn, apathetic, moody, depressed, irritable or anxious.

• Stage 2. Memory problems are more obvious. It may be difficult for someone with Alzheimer’s to follow conversations. The person may have difficulty recalling current events or even bits of information from their own lives.

Depression often becomes prominent. Reasoning and judgment skills are impaired.

• Stage 3. Memory can fluctuate

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff daily or even hourly. People sometimes forget major events in their lives. Often they are unaware of the date or the time of year.

Their conversations may become disjointed and veer off track.

You may see episodes of paranoia or anger. Stressful situations can trigger shouting, cursing or hitting.

At this stage, people with Alzheimer’s can still manage many basic activities of daily living. But they can no longer live independently.

• Stage 4. In this stage, you’ll see dramatic changes. Language skills drop sharply. Memory impairment becomes profound. A person remembers only bits and pieces of his or her past.

People become less withdrawn, but they often develop behavior and emotional problems, including delusions and hallucinations.

Sleep disturbances and wandering are also common.

By this stage, the person will likely require help to bathe, toilet, dress and eat.

• Stage 5. This stage has been

called “the long goodbye.” There seems to be very little left of the person’s “self.” Motor skills decline until the person can no longer walk, sit up, chew and swallow food, or control bladder and bowel movements. As the brain shuts down, the person becomes unresponsive, lapses into a coma and finally dies.

I am sorry to paint such a bleak picture, but unfortunately today we have no way of preventing or treating this terrible disease. However, there is reason to hope that the picture will become brighter in the future. In the past 20 years, scientists have begun to unravel what goes wrong with the chemistry of the brain in Alzheimer’s. I am cautiously optimistic that this knowledge will lead to true breakthroughs.

But like the pace of the disease itself, the pace of our growing knowledge is hard to predict. It may take decades, but I think medical research will make major advances. I know that gives little comfort to people who must deal with this terrible illness today.

At the bridge table, as we saw yesterday, that is sometimes possible in the bidding. I pointed out that a jump-shift response by a passed hand is fit-showing: length in that suit and partner’s suit.

That was in an uncontested auction. When the opponents sail in, I like to use fit-jumps even by an unpassed hand. I jump as high as I am willing to drive the auction.

In this deal, after South opens one diamond and West overcalls one heart, North jumps to two spades, showing a limited hand with five spades and four-plus diamonds. (With a stronger hand, North could jump to three spades.) The auction then proceeds to five diamonds by South.

West leads the heart ace and shifts to his trump. East wins and plays a club. How should South continue after guessing well to win with his club ace?

Declarer needs three dummy entries: one to take the spade finesse, one to ruff out East’s spade king, and one to reach the established spade winners.

Those entries are a heart ruff, the diamond queen and the diamond six – did you see the necessity for South not to play his diamond five at trick two? Then you can bring home the contract with four spades, five diamonds, one club and the heart ruff.

Note that if North initially responds one spade, East would jump to four hearts and leave both North and South wondering what to do.
