A HERO’S WELCOME Geneva Christian students honor Mayor Burns, police officer

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Police Officer Paul VanDorn smiled Wednesday morning as he carried a large card decorated with messages from students at Geneva Christian School.

VanDorn and Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns were guests of honor at the school’s Hero Day. Children from all grade levels sang, presented a list of the “top 10 reasons we love our hometown heroes” and provided the mayor and police officer with cards expressing their gratitude for what they do every day.

The students were joined by their parents and school officials in the chapel of Faith Lutheran Church.

“It was wonderful,” VanDorn said. “It’s nice to have the support of the community like this. … It’s nice to know they understand what our job really is.”

Burns praised the “caring and thoughtful students” and said he was honored to be at the event with VanDorn.

“What a great way to start a Wednesday,” Burns said to those gathered at the event.

He joked, “I’ll be back next Wednesday for more cards and doughnuts.”

It also was an opportunity for those at the school to celebrate with the community as the school’s identity now is established after changes that recently took place. Geneva Christian School opened

Judge denies motion to reconsider Shadwick King prison sentence

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County judge Wednesday denied a motion to reconsider the prison sentence of a former Geneva man convicted of murdering his wife.

Judge James Hallock in a brief hearing ruled Shadwick King’s 30-year prison sentence was not “unduly harsh” as stated in the motion to reconsider the sentence.

King’s attorney, Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress, was present at the hearing, along with Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams.

The minimum sentence

for King was 20 years, and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office requested a sentence of 42 Shadwick years, Hallock King said.

In the motion filed by Childress on behalf of King, an argument was made that family members who participated in King’s sentencing hearing were not authorized by statute to present victim impact statements.

Hallock ruled that each person who participated in the sentencing hearing was designated as an immediate family member. Sams made the same argument in his written re-

sponse to the motion.

A jury on March 16 found King, 48, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Kathleen King, 32. He was sentenced July 31 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

King was admitted Aug. 4 to the state’s Northern Reception and Classification Center in Joliet, according to the state Department of Corrections website.

King is in reception status, meaning he will stay at the center until he is transferred to a state prison.

Hallock in court said King will have an appellate defender appointed and can consider whether to file an appeal of the ruling.

The Bend closes shop in downtown St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Bend General Store has shut its doors after a year in business.

Tony Scheufler, who ran the shop with Jen Cook, said it was a tough decision to close last week – its last operating day was Oct. 20 – but a year’s worth of data supported the choice.

“We really enjoyed operating and having a place in St. Charles,” he said.

The store was two businesses in one – a deli featuring imported meats and cheeses and an import grocery store featuring primarily Italian products.

Despite efforts to expand catering, Scheufler said, sales at the Bend, located at 320 W. Main St., never grew to a rate that justified working 60- to 70hour weeks.

“Nobody goes in business just to break even,” he said.

The last year taught him a lot about what the market can bear, he said, adding the store likely would have done well in a more densely populated area.

“We just jumped the gun,” The Bend General Store in St. Charles closed its doors last week.

Three charged in attempted St. Charles burglary

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Two men and a juvenile, all from Florida, were charged Wednesday in connection to an attempted burglary in St. Charles, according to a St. Charles police news release.

Harris Andrew Howard, 22, of the 2400 block of 84th Avenue in Miramar, Florida, Enrico Nelson, 19, of the 3500 block of Seventh Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and a 16-yearold Fort Lauderdale boy were each charged with one count of attempted burglary from a motor vehicle, a Class 3 felony, the release states.

Howard also was charged with misdemeanor obstructing or resisting a police offi-

cer, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, driving without a license and improper lane usage, according to the news release.

A witness also provided information about their vehicle, which officers encountered at 9:17 a.m. in the 400 block of North Kirk Road traveling north, according to the release.

An officer following the vehicle reportedly attempted a traffic stop after witnessing a traffic violation. Instead of stopping, the vehicle accelerated, fleeing from the marked squad, the release states.

As it continued north, the vehicle made numerous traffic violations and left the city’s jurisdiction on Dunham Road near Army Trail Road, according to the release.

The St. Charles officer returned to the original scene on Kirk Road after losing sight of the vehicle, states the re-

lease, which noted a regional dispatch was broadcast about the vehicle, its occupants and their suspicious activity.

At 9:31 a.m., St. Charles police learned the vehicle was involved in a rollover crash and fire at Route 59 and Stearns Road in Bartlett, the release states.

Nelson and the boy required assistance in exiting the vehicle, according to the release. After being released from the hospital, they were detained by St. Charles for further investigation.

The third occupant, later identified as Howard, was taken into custody after fleeing on foot and transported to the St. Charles Police Department.

“During the course of the investigation a number of

items were recovered and determined to be of evidentiary value and connected to previously reported motor vehicle burglaries by nearby jurisdictions, as well as jurisdictions outside of Illinois,” police stated in the release.

Howard is wanted on a no bond, full extradition arrest warrant issued by the Florida Department of Corrections, according to the release. The boy is wanted on a separate no bond, full extradition arrest warrant issued by Broward County in Florida.

Howard and Nelson were transferred to the Kane County Jail, and the boy was transferred to the Kane County Juvenile Center, all to await their own bond hearings, according to the release.

CHICAGO – Former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert pleaded guilty Wednesday to bank fraud charges connected to $1.7 million he paid to cover up what federal officials said was sexual misconduct dating back to his years as a high school teacher and coach.

Prosecutors are recommending up to a six-month prison sentence.

The early morning plea hearing was being closely watched to see whether it revealed new information about the misdeeds Hastert allegedly paid to conceal. Neither the person whom Hastert allegedly paid off nor the wrongdoing has been made public.

Hastert, R-Illinois, 73, was charged in July with breaking federal bank laws and lying to investigators looking into the matter – ostensibly dull counts prosecutors alleged stemmed from an intriguing plot. According to the indictment, Hastert, who was a teacher and wrestling coach in Yorkville before he got into politics in the early 1980s, agreed to pay someone $3.5 million to hide “past misconduct” against the person.

A federal law enforcement official has said the person was a male former student of Hastert’s who alleged that Hastert molested him years ago. The indictment said Hastert paid the person about $1.7 million from 2010 to 2014.

The person was not named in the indictment, and his identity and the specifics of his allegations remain perhaps the greatest mysteries in the case. Experts did not expect Wednesday’s hearing to shed new light on those topics, suggesting Hastert probably pleaded guilty in part to avoid an in-court airing of his past.

He has remained silent about the case.

More than a dozen businesses are expected to participate in the inaugural Sugar Grove Chamber Business Trick or Treat set for 10 a.m. to noon on Halloween.

The suggested trick-or-treating hours in the village are 4 to 7 p.m.

Families participating in the chamber event should start at the Sugar Grove Township Community Building, 141 S. Main St., Sugar Grove, to receive their passport of participating businesses, Chamber Executive Director Shari Baum said.

The event aims to bring the businesses and residents together as a benefit to both, she said. Sometimes, she said, residents don’t realize that a particular business is in town.

14 Convicted murderer gets

more time to make a case

By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge said Wednesday that he saw no reason at this point to reconsider convicted murderer Jack McCullough’s request for another trial, but he granted him more time to make his case.

McCullough’s attorney, Tom McCulloch, requested the hearing to get DeKalb County Judge Jack Robert Pilmer McCullough to reconsider his September dismissal of McCullough’s hand-written petition to reverse his murder conviction. Maria McCulloch is the Ridulph DeKalb County public defender who represented McCullough at trial.

McCullough was sentenced to life in prison in December 2012 for the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph, 7, of Sycamore, closing the oldest cold case in U.S. history. McCullough, a 75-year-old Pontiac Correctional Center inmate, has claimed new evidence could prove his innocence and that prosecutors violated his constitutional rights at trial by withholding evidence that would have helped his defense.

Pilmer said Wednesday that the reasoning provided in the latest court filings wasn’t enough to merit a hearing on the matter. However, the judge said he would give McCullough a month to build a stronger case.

The rehashing of Maria Ridulph’s death has been a painful and confusing processing for her family, her brother Charles Ridulph said.

“We were really hoping that after the judge’s recent ruling that this was going to be the end of it,” Charles Ridulph said.

“This really caught us by surprise.”

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack filed a statement Monday that said his office won’t participate in any proceedings regarding the motion for reconsideration because

it was too early in the post-conviction process for prosecutors to weigh in. Schmack appeared in court Wednesday to reiterate that position.

He declined to comment after the hearing, saying it would be inappropriate.

But the State’s Attorney’s lack of involvement so far has the Ridulph family concerned. “[Schmack] responded by saying it’s really a technical thing,” Charles Ridulph said.

“The reason he’s not responding is because he doesn’t want it to appear they’re moving it forward to another stage in the process.”

Still, Charles Ridulph questioned if politics were at play.

“From the very beginning I’ve been shocked at the amount of politics involved at that court house,” he said.

Pilmer was curious about McCulloch’s involvement in the case because the public defender hadn’t been appointed to represent McCullough in the post-conviction process. In fact, Pilmer had previously denied McCullough’s request to have the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office appointed in September.

“At this point, Mr. McCullough is representing himself,” Pilmer said Wednesday.

But McCulloch said he “still retains responsibilities,” after having represented McCullough during trial.

Pilmer dismissed McCullough’s request for post-conviction relief in September, calling it “frivolous and without merit,” according to court documents. McCullough wrote the petition by hand from prison without help from a lawyer.

After the dismissal, McCulloch filed motions asking the judge to reconsider that decision based on new evidence.

In the motion for reconsideration, McCullough raised questions about the use of jailhouse informants, whether prosecutors failed to turn over evidence that could have been helpful to the defense at trial and other arguments similar to those that he and his lawyers raised during his 2012 trial and subsequent appeal. He also claimed newly discovered evidence would cast doubt on the testimony provided by two witnesses at the McCullough’s 2012 trial.

GENEVA – Kane County Board members on Wednesday called for an evaluation of the county’s credit card policy in light of recent activity by Coroner Rob Russell.

Russell was affected by a resolution the County Board approved in July that authorized the auditor to withhold approval for payment by the treasurer with any contracts, invoices or other claims projected to exceed a department’s or office’s budget.

He is working with the County Board to get nearly $5,000 of the $11,000 in unpaid bills paid – the Finance and Budget Committee supported such a measure Wednesday – but used his county-issued credit card for the remaining $6,000, officials said.

“This was making sure that people got paid,” Russell said, adding it is unfair to put vendors in the middle. “We’ve never abused it.”

Board members were upset Russell avoided the standard approval process for promotional items.

Writing about writing My parents received a report after my first day of 4-year-old preschool reading: “Today, Emma played at the Writing and Home Living Centers.”

Yep, even from the start, writing has been part of my life. I can’t remember a time I haven’t found great satisfaction and joy in the process of putting words on a page.

I remember when I would eagerly tell my parents whatever stories I invented, and they’d transcribe the words into little booklets I’d later illustrate. Amazingly, I still have most of these early “books,” and I store them in a large box labeled “Emma’s Writing.”

Every so often, I sift through the box, and I’m usually amazed at what I find. For example, take “Puffy the Farmer’s Dog,” on which I affixed a Caldecott Medal sticker I had removed from another book. The story follows the adventures of – wait for it – a dog named Puffy who lives on a farm.

Puffy and his owner, Farmer Green, visit Farmer Harrison and his cat, creatively named Puff. Then a blizzard suddenly hits, and Puffy brings bread to those trapped in their houses by the storm. When he returns home, Puffy is enticed by a delicious-looking vat of orange juice that has appeared at his house, and he consumes the entire vat.

Puffy grows into a much larger dog after drinking all that juice, yet realizes that he is loved no matter what by Farmer Green, Farmer Harrison and Puff.

I know, that’s an award-winning story right there! I’m not sure exactly how old I was when I penned “Puffy the Farmer’s Dog,” but clearly, I was still young enough that the basic principles of plot and characterization hadn’t quite sunk in. The book never ceases to give me a good laugh whenever I look back at it.

However, I’ve come to realize that my earliest works of literature (if you can call them that) serve a greater purpose than mere entertainment. They show me just how far I’ve come as a

It’s safe to say that I haven’t written anything quite like “Puffy the Farmer’s Dog” in a very long time, but when I compare it to the essays and articles I’m writing now, I see a night-and-day difference. My skills have developed in many ways (thanks Mom and Geneva School District 304 teachers!), and it’s gratifying to see the progress I’ve made. It goes to show that the harder you work at something, the more you’ll improve, and that’s inspiring as I continue on a writing path.

Whenever I craft a new piece of writing, I’m reminded of how much I enjoy the art of transforming thoughts into words.

Writing gives me an opportunity to unravel the tangled web of thoughts within my brain and express those thoughts in new ways. It provides a creative outlet for my emotions and often helps me make sense of a world that makes anything but sense. More than anything, writing is my escape, my own little universe, my chance to create an entirely new world at my discretion. Writing is a passion I can’t imagine my life without.

If “Puffy the Farmer’s Dog” ever becomes a bestseller, then I guess I reached the pinnacle of my writing career at an early age. But, at this point, I know I still have much to learn, and I’ll continue to hone my craft in the years ahead. Because as long as there are stories to tell, I plan on using the gift of words to share them.

This argument against health care fails

By CHRISTOPHER FLAVELLE Bloomberg View One of the most persistent arguments against the health care act has been that the cost of coverage on state exchanges will skyrocket. Figures released Monday by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, listing average 2016 premium increases for the 37 states whose exchanges are run by the federal government, suggest that argument just isn’t true.

Yes, some of those states will see eye-popping increases: a 36 percent jump in Oklahoma, for example, and a 32 percent rise in Alaska. But in other states, the average cost of the so-called benchmark plan (the second-cheapest silver plan in a given geographic area) will fall – by 13 percent in Indiana, 8 percent in Mississippi

and 1 percent in Ohio.

On average, benchmark premiums will go up by just 7.5 percent.

That’s not nothing; it’s far greater than the 2 percent increase for federally run exchanges between 2014 and 2015. It’s also twice the increase in nationwide premiums for employer- provided health over that same period. But it’s leagues away from the sort of doomsday warnings issued over the past few months. On Sunday, Donald Trump said the health care premiums are “going up 35, 45, 55 percent.” That’s pretty far off, even for Trump.

Nor are the new numbers particularly surprising. In June, analysts from the Kaiser Family Foundation looked at 2016 premium increases for 11 major cities. They found those increases to be 4.4 percent on average – more than the 0.6 percent de-

crease in those same cities between 2014 and 2015, but still pretty good.

One response to Monday’s figures is to say the jaw-dropping premiums are still coming – they’re just not here yet.

That may be right, but until it actually happens it’s an argument that with each passing year is increasingly drained of credibility. Sure, some states will see big jumps in average premiums next year. But that doesn’t put the sustainability of the system as a whole into doubt.

There are plenty of actual problems with the system that demand attention. Let’s deal with worrisome premium increases if and when they occur. This isn’t the year.

But their love for the beverage went beyond just drinking it after opening the Arcedium Coffeehouse in January 2009.

After Celeste Walker saw her family’s business sold and Dennis Walker thought about taking an early retirement from the construction business when the market was down, the idea of the Arcedium Coffeehouse “took a life of its own,” said Celeste Walker.

“We were originally going to be a coffee roaster and tea house,” Celeste Walker said. “But we decided to put more of an emphasis on the coffee roasting. It’s pretty amazing the way the coffee roasting industry has exploded since we’ve been in business. It was very, very rare when we first started back in 2009.”

The business, located at 60 Indiana St. in St. Charles, has won the Kane County Chronicle’s Best of the Fox Award for Best Coffeehouse for five years running.

The coffeehouse is open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Among the coffee sold at the shop – as well as online at www.arcedium.com – is the House Blend and the Yirgacheffe, which is Ethiopian.

The Yirgacheffe is one of a number of fair trade, organic coffees from around the world that is offered at Arcedium.

The roast features pronounced lemon and red berry flavors, a tea-like finish and hints of jasmine and bergamot. The House Blend is a special combination of Ethiopian and Indonesian coffees, blended to create a smooth, chocolaty, earthy body, with subtle blueberry notes.

of the behind-the-scenes work at Arcedium, such as interviews and advertising.

She also runs her own full-time law practice, so juggling time can be difficult.

Meanwhile, Dennis Walker, 62, who was born and raised in St. Charles, has always had a passion to do something in the food industry. He handles the day-today responsibilities at the business.

“Some people refer to us [as] a restaurant, and while we sell food, we’re very passionate as being identified as a coffee roaster,” said Celeste Walker with a bit of a laugh.

The Walkers said they really don’t have a reason for why they specifically decided to become coffee roasters, other

than some research that they did prior to opening their business. After being somewhat mentored by Alterra Coffee Roasters in the Milwaukee area, Dennis Walker and Celeste Walker’s father went to roasting school in Seattle with people from around the world to become certified roasters.

Celeste Walker said she has always thought – before meeting her husband and, even now, after 14 years of marriage – that people who have worked in the building industry have a strong passion for their work. During Arcedium’s years of operation, she said her husband’s work ethic carried over.

“He’s displayed the same passion for this since Day 1,” Celeste Walker said. “He’s had the same passion for our coffee, whether it’s coming up with the perfect profiles or combinations of roasts.”

Opening a small business can be a risk. But Arcedium has connected with

customers over the years.

The business has a meeting room for community groups, and it also has helped other small businesses.

And after having a strong turnout during an initial open house for the business years ago, Celeste Walker encountered a local cameraman for a TV news station that came into the shop. Being asked, “Is Washington doing anything for small businesses?” for a broadcast seemed to help the coffeehouse.

“We take a lot of pride – and there is a good amount of humility – that comes from this,” Celeste Walker said. “We’ve been able to do this virtually on our own. ... We have always had the feeling in recent years that the sense of community is very much lost, and that was one of our goals with Arcedium – to bring that back. That has probably been the most rewarding thing since we’ve been in business. We feel as though we have become ‘that place’.”

Three falls ago, Young and Rentz were freshmen enjoying the latest pop hits and the merits of early-onset authority.

The 2012 Beads featured only sophomores and freshmen in their state series lineup, leaving everyone on the team with no choice but to speak up.

Evolving from such a setup certainly shaped Young and Rentz, senior co-captains with major aspirations to bring Rosary back atop the state meet podium the weekend before Thanksgiving.

“The whole season is about training for these last few meets that are coming up here now,” Rentz said. “So we’ve been through all the hard training periods. Now this is the part where we can really start to come together as a team.”

Sporadic dancing enters into that latter equation, but not during the heat of important workouts.

Rosary assistant Glenn Brown insists athletes “know when they have to work,” even if it might be “more often than they would like it to be.”

Did you know there’s a kid who’s running sub-5-minute miles as an eighth-grader?

That’s how most conversations started.

Two years later, Kintz is a senior and Richtman is a sophomore, and together they form a formidable lead pack for a Knights team that nearly won its own Class 2A regional this past weekend.

“I just kind of took him under my wing,” Kintz said, “and it’s been incredible having him to push me and for me to push him.”

Richtman (fifth, 16:12) and Kintz (eighth, 16:37) guided the Knights to a runner-up team effort at Elburn Woods Forest Preserve and a spot in Saturday’s Woodstock North Sectional at Emricson Park.

Kaneland scored 73 points at regionals, one behind Crystal Lake Central, which enjoyed a 83-point advantage on the Knights during a September invitational at Elburn Woods.

Austin Kintz Clearly, the Knights have tightened the gap since then, which typically goes with the territory when five members of the top seven are seniors.

Sean Spaetzel, Will Kuipers, Andrew Kantola, Matt Kainrath and Zach Kurz followed Richtman and Kintz.

The Knights’ Nos. 4-7 runners were just 47 seconds apart, although still looking up at Richtman.

“It’s crazy to see how much he’s progressed just over the two years and knowing he has good leadership,” Kintz said.

“The seniors, we’re going to be leaving him and he’ll be set.”

Bosworth offered “kind of a big shoutout” to Werner, who narrowly missed the top 23 medal cutoff at the Upstate Eight Conference River Division meet in Bartlett on Oct. 17, honoring a varsity promotion.

Werner took 27th in 16:08 and was the meet champion Saints’ seventh runner. His time, however, was about nine minutes faster than what Werner typically ran as a freshman.

“I remember as a freshman he was an all-out 7:46 mile runner,” Bosworth said. “He was about 50 pounds heavier. Now, to come out and run a varsity race from when he started high school, you would have never said that he would have been on our top seven.”

Bosworth, mirroring the dedicated Werner, went one step further, calling the junior’s journey “kind of the quintessential story of a distance runner.”

Werner was seventh for the Saints’ during last weekend’s championship run to the Class 3A St. Charles North Regional title at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, taking 28th in 17:02 – one spot and three seconds behind classmate Jake Beno.

Young and Rentz recently recalled their first impressions of a pair of 2015 Rosary graduates, channeling their respective experiences as freshmen.

Young remembers how Elaina Ricci would dance for 10 minutes before practice, “just like a spaz,” because that’s the way she could bring teammates together. Once engaged, the Beads took special notice to Jill Bottarini’s persistent messages about thinking positively, as Rentz remembers.

“We just like to stay optimistic and get everyone as excited as possible,” Young said.

“Especially for the younger swimmers, so they can be introduced in how we do things here. We just want to make the season fun. It’s only four years, so let’s make the best of what we can do.”

If seed times are any indication, the Beads’ best can be exceedingly good if they swim up to their capabilities during the next month.

“We have three girls in the 100 (butterfly) that could score at the state meet, but we can only take two of them to sectionals,” Brown said. “Same with the IM. Same with probably the 100 (backstroke). But it’s a nice problem to have.

It gives us more flexibility, also.”

Hey, it never hurts to be too nimble on the dance floor.

Girls volleyball regional finals tonight “We’re not supposed to win. So that’s a nice place to be.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE Seven Kane County Chronicle-area girls volleyball teams are set to compete in various IHSA regional finals at 6 p.m. today.

A handful of intriguing regular season rematches loom in that schedule, including a meeting between host St. Charles East and Neuqua Valley in Class 4A. The Saints lost to the visiting Wildcats in a three-set nonconference match on Oct. 1, but were notably without two recently-returned stalwarts.

Junior outside hitter Kyla Augustine battled injuries to both of her ankles this season, while classmate Emily Schildmeyer, a defensive specialist, missed most of 2015 with a balky back.

So call it a rematch, although not in the truest sense, at least in the Saints’ case.

“That always just makes it so much more exciting, especially when you get beat by a team,” Augustine said. “Because then you just want it that much more. You want to come out and show them that you are a good team, that you can put it to them.”

East’s recent returns aside, the Saints still sport a certain label by virtue of Neuqua Valley’s head-to-head victory and its higher seed – No. 4 to No. 5.

“Now we’re underdogs,” East coach Jennie Kull said.

Hughes hunkers down while speaking up It’s been a transitory few months for Anne Hughes, both on and off the volleyball court.

This time last year, Hughes was St. Charles East’s libero. Now a freshman at Eastern Illinois, she’s playing a different position, moving from libero to defensive specialist.

She’s getting playing time and making an impact, but she’s back to being one of the more inexperienced players on her team, a distinct change from her senior year of high school.

“Obviously being libero at St. Charles East compared to being a DS here at Eastern was a different change,” Hughes said. “But the libero

And I’m just trying to be a good teammate whether I’m on or off the court, like if I’m on the bench cheering or if I’m in the game playing and getting good touches.”

Hughes is seeing plenty of playing time, especially for a first-year player. Only four players on the team have played more sets than her, and she ranks third on the

team in digs with 203.

But she’s getting used to contributing from the sideline, too. You might not think that players on the bench have an impact while sitting, but with the right amount of focus and the right amount of energy, that area of the floor outside the lines can make a difference.

“Being on the court, it’s easy to boost your teammates because you’re right there with them and they’re listening to you. But when you’re on the sidelines, you’ve got to keep being loud and cheering, and it’s hard to not get distracted as the game goes on,” Hughes said. “But you just have to stay focused the whole time and be in the

game and ready to go.”

In addition to the change of position, Hughes is facing the changes that every college freshman does. The courses are harder. Being away from home can be tough.

Thankfully for Hughes, she’s getting plenty of support from home.

It’s a bit of a drive from St. Charles to Charleston, but Hughes’ parents have made it on multiple occasions. And when the Panthers played in Chicago, Hughes had a sizable cheering section.

“I am in-state, so my parents, for home games, they’ve made it to most of them. They’ve been able to make the drive; it’s about 3½ hours,” Hughes said. “And

we’ve had a tournament in the Chicago area, so they were able to come to that. So far, I’m not homesick, I’m liking college a lot, it’s a lot of fun. But it’s nice to see my parents and family every once in a while.

“We had a tournament at DePaul in downtown Chicago, and my family was able to make it out. Just seeing them there as a reminder that they want to come out and support me, that my family loves me, is a great feeling.”

The drainage path can be tracked. The first lymph node along the path is called the sentinel node. This node is removed and examined for cancer cells. If the sentinel node has no cancer, the other nodes are most often cancer-free.

If cancer is found in the sentinel node, all the lymph nodes in the area will likely be removed.

In addition to surgery, treatments for melanoma include immunotherapy.

This treatment strengthens the immune system against the cancer.

Recently developed techniques for stimulating your immune system to attack the cancer have sometimes been dramatically effective. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are also available, but tend to be less effective.

Newer drugs target specific genetic changes seen in people with certain forms of melanoma. For example, about half of melanomas have genetic changes (mutations) in a gene called BRAF. This mutation signals melanoma cells to grow and divide quickly.

Drugs that inhibit BRAF and related proteins are now available.

The sooner melanoma is identified and treated, the better. Everyone should inspect their skin regularly. If you notice any moles with uneven color, an irregular border, or a border that changes over time, see your doctor. (I’ve put a photo of a cancerous mole on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and in the 10th grade in a public high school. My parents have decided I should attend a private high school connected with our church next semester. I have told them I don’t want to go to the private school, but they have enrolled me and paid the tuition already.

I’m not happy with their decision since all my friends will be going to the public high school.

The new school doesn’t have a football team, and it doesn’t offer school dances or extracurricular activities.

I’ve begged my parents to let me stay at our public school, but they are concerned about all the drugs and violence in public schools.

I have seen a fight or two, but never any drugs or weapons on our campus.

How can I get my parents to reconsider and let me continue where I am? Then, if things change and there is a lot of trouble at our school, I would agree to transfer to the private school. – Jake, Boston Jake: There’s probably no way your parents will reverse their decision now since they

Sometimes life is what you make it. Students can get a good education or be miserable failures at either school.

Your experiences will depend 100 percent on the effort you put into them, both academically and socially.

reading your column for a long time, and I notice that if a young girl is pregnant and writes to you for advice, you never direct her to a clinic where she can get an abortion.

Indiana Latoya: I’m a firm believer

that girls who become pregnant and don’t know what to do should go to their parents for guidance.

In cases where the parents do not accept the responsibility of giving guidance, the young lady should seek help and counsel from relatives, school personnel or members of the clergy.

I would never simply tell someone to get an abortion. That is never my call.

A pregnant, unwed teen is often afraid, alone and very confused. She should always make the final decision only after intelligent conversations with people who love her and care deeply that she makes the right choice.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor just discovered that I have melanoma, but didn’t really explain the treatment. Can you tell me what I’m in for?

Dear Reader: Melanoma is skin cancer that begins in the melanocytes – cells that give skin its color.

Usually these cells first form a precancerous condition called a dysplastic (diss-PLAS-tik) mole. Then the cells turn cancerous and start to reproduce aggressively.

When that happens, the melanoma grows in size. Unfortunately, some of the cells also can shake loose from the tumor and spread throughout the body. When that happens, the cells first spread to the local lymph nodes, then on to the rest of the body. If melanoma has not spread, it can be cured.

If your melanoma appears in just one spot, it will be surgically removed. The doctor removes the visible part of the tumor. He or she will also remove some healthy skin around the tumor.

(The exact amount will depend on the size of the tumor.) The extra skin is removed because it can contain microscopic bits of the cancer. You want all of the cancerous cells removed.

In some cases, the doctor may perform a procedure during which the tumor is shaved away one thin layer at a time.

Each layer is examined under a microscope as it is removed. This technique helps the doctor remove as little healthy skin as possible.

Your doctor may also want to check if the melanoma has spread to nearby lymph nodes. These small structures are part of the immune system. To check, your doctor may inject a radioactive liquid into the tumor. The liquid flows through the natural drainage pathway that connects the tumor to nearby lymph

Police Records Specialist III The Village of Elburn, Illinois (population 5,602) is accepting applications for the position of Police Records Specialist III. This is a part-time position consisting of 16 hours per week, and reports directly to the Chief of Police. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of functions that support the records management and administrative obligations of the police department.

The duties of a Police Records Specialist III may include, data entry, receiving telephone calls and citizen visits concerning information requests and complaints, accepting payments of fines and fees, communicating with other law enforcement agencies, preparing court related documents, and other tasks as assigned.

Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to graduation from high school or equivalent with two (2) years of law enforcement records experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish successful working relationships; ability to work under pressure and/or with frequent interruptions; ability to work with angry or difficult customers. Experience with New World Systems Records Management program, Municipal Software, Inc. (MSI), and GovPayNet are a plus.

Drumroll, please.

Benjamin Moore’s 2016 Color of the Year was officially announced last week: Simply White.

Huh? With memories of the earthy Marsala (Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year) and vivid Coral Reef (Sherwin-Williams’ 2015 choice), how could a plain vanilla get such an exalted ranking?

“White is transcendent, powerful and polarizing – it is either taken for granted or obsessed over,” Benjamin Moore Creative Director Ellen O’Neill said in the company’s announcement. The release also said this particular color was chosen from the company’s more than 250 selections of white paint because “it was the most neutral, level and constant in the various light sources used in today’s design

environments.”

Reaction in the design community was not surprise, but rather a bit of caution.

Miles Redd, a New York designer known for his richly hued interiors, was rooting for a daffodil yellow or maybe a shade of blue. “I don’t think of white as a color. But I know it is. I live in technicolor,” Redd said. “Most people do go for white paint. Color is something people don’t always know how to handle. I guess it’s not surprising given that white sheets and white towels are the number one sellers, too.”

Washington interior designer Mary Douglas Drysdale was not surprised. “I think it’s consistent to where design has been moving over the past three to four years.

“In the past, having kids has always steered us toward making temporary choices,” John said. “We would get things that were cheap, plastic and covered because we assumed that we would need to replace it soon anyway.” But their visits to other homes expanded their definition of “kid-friendly” to include leather and acrylic, both materials that age well and are very “wipable” for those inevitable spills. “We saw two kids jump on an acrylic table and it was fine,” John said, chuckling.
