Kaneland begins tax levy process SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland School District 302 Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs on Monday night started the district’s levy process with an announcement that, for the first time in six years, the school district is expecting growth in the equalized assessed valuation.

Fuchs was seeking direction from school board members about whether to seek a levy that incorporates a consumer price index of 0.8 percent, the maximum that could be requested, or whether it should use a figure lower than that. Fuchs would use the information to prepare the district’s tentative levy, which is set to be adopted at the Nov. 9 meeting.

The majority of board members – Veronica Bruhl, Cheryl Krauspe, Peter Lopatin, Gale Pavlak and Teresa Witt – said they would seek to capture the maximum amount. Two members – Ryan Kerry and Pedro Rivas

The levy amount would be $44,150,000. Fuchs said the district would expect to receive $42,724,016.

“It is estimated that the tax bill for a house valued at $200,000 would be approximately $4,956, about $150 less than in 2014,” Fuchs stated in documents provided to the board. However, it added “if a home value increased, then the new assessed value would need to be used to calculate the tax bill.” Also, she stressed the calculations were done based on total values in a community, but because Kaneland “is comprised of many diverse communities, individual values and taxes are likely to

Board members discussed the CPI issue at length. Witt said she would seek the 0.8 percent CPI increase because she looked at CPI as a cost of living increase. Lopatin said “it’s about trying to keep up.” Fuchs said there were contracts to consider, as well as health insurance and service to buses.

Kerry asked whether the district’s fund balance has continued to grow, and Fuchs said it has, but she said there were concerns at the state level, and she said it is prudent to be prepared.

Witt said the fund balance can “help insulate us from risk from the state,” adding “that risk hasn’t diminished.”

Fuchs also added if the board chose not to seek the maximum amount, “you are affecting it for this district’s life.”

“But the opposite is also true,” Kerry said. “That taxpayer rates wouldn’t go up every year.”

Fuchs said that was true, “but this year, taxpayer rates are coming down.”

Krauspe said she would suggest seeking the full amount, adding “for me, personally, it would not be a wise move” to do otherwise.

Pavlak agreed.

“I don’t see any way of getting around it,” Pavlak said. “I’d love to take it to zero, but I don’t believe that is rational.”

St. Charles East students readying for food drive

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East High School student council is gearing up for its annual food drive, which is set for next month.

About 70 students plan to participate in the event, which benefits The Salvation Army, Kelvin Wang, the group’s public relations officer, wrote in an email.

All nonperishable food items will be accepted, such as pasta, canned food and granola bars, the 17-year-old senior wrote, noting packages should be unopened. He

wrote the goal is to collect 3,000 items.

Paper bags for the nonperishable items will be distributed to residents throughout the city Nov. 7. A week later, on Nov. 14, student council members will collect the filled bags beginning at 9 a.m., he wrote, noting the students plan to wear costumes for the occasion.

All food should be collected by about 12:30 p.m. Those who can’t donate during the food drive but want to contribute should donate directly to The Salvation Army, he wrote.

City to review sidewalk policy McMahon to serve as

BATAVIA – Batavia’s city staff will take another look at its sidewalk policy following the concerns of a family building a home on the city’s west side.

Ben Michels and his wife would like to be relieved of the requirement to build a sidewalk in front of their home under construction on Waubonsee Trail.

The couple Tuesday night addressed Batavia aldermen at their Committee of the Whole meeting. Because of issues with their home’s site plan that had to be addressed at a cost of thousands of dollars,

they said, they did not want to spend the estimated $2,000 to put in a 60-foot segment of sidewalk.

It is the city’s goal to have sidewalks constructed on both sides of the street throughout the city, Scott Buening, the city’s community development director, said.

Fifth Ward Alderman Kevin Botterman visited the property and Tuesday asked about the variance process for the family, saying an exception seemed reasonable for the couple.

It will be years before the 60-foot sidewalk segment gets connected to other sidewalks, and it will appear unfinished during that time, 5th Ward

Alderman Lucy Thelin-Atac said.

Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff and 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark each agreed the Michels family should be required to pay for sidewalk installation like any other resident planning new construction or redevelopment.

“The fair thing to do is put in the sidewalk,” Wolff said.

City Administrator Bill McGrath apologized to the couple for the issues they’ve had with building their home. He said he would meet with city staff to find a balance between the family’s wishes and the city’s requirements.

“This is about a solution, not blame,” McGrath said.

Helm is aiming to open a Ralph Helm Lawn Equipment Center on property at 1001 S. Main St., which is on Route 47, south of Keslinger Road in Elburn. Helm’s plan is dependent on whether the Forest Preserve District of Kane County successfully buys the rest of the land on the parcel, which totals about 18 acres. The forest preserve district has been seeking to use its portion of the property as a new home for its Natural Resources Department.

Since part of that property sits in Elburn, village officials then must approve the forest preserve district’s use of that land. A previous effort failed, as Elburn trustees indicated they weren’t comfortable with potential property tax revenue being lost, but now that Helm is part of the deal, trustees provided more favorable feedback.

Helm already runs locations in Elgin and Crystal Lake. Helm said he would be “very excited” about Elburn, but if it can’t come together by early spring, he would take a pass for now.

“What I sell is lawn mowing equipment,” Helm said.

“Roughly 60 percent of my sales is done during a period in the spring. … If I’m buying a pumpkin farm, I don’t want to buy it on Nov. 1. I want to buy it on Oct. 1.”

The next step comes Thursday, when the forest preserve district’s land acquisition committee meets.

There is opposition. Two village residents spoke during the public comment portion of a recent meeting, saying they don’t have enough information about the plan. The residents – Ellen Petersen and Amy Milz – said they want to be certain the forest preserve district’s plan is the best for the village. They

Also, Drew Frasz, a Kane County Board member from Elburn, originally backed the concept and advocated for its approval before Helm became a part of it. Kane County Board members also serve as commissioners for the forest preserve district. After the rejection from the Elburn board, which Frasz noted was unanimous, he said he began looking for alternative sites. He said he found one that is significantly cheaper and is not controversial.

R.F. Houtz and Son has operated at 701 E. North St. in Elburn, but that building has been sold. Rob Houtz said he is looking to retire. Helm said his business essentially is the same as Houtz’s, except Helm carries more brands and Houtz’s business was specific to Cub Cadet.

Houtz said there are “two or three people who have my blessing. He’s one of a number of suitors for my business.”

However, Houtz said, the others who are interested might not lo-

cate in Elburn, whereas Helm has indicated he would want to.

Helm said he spoke to Mike Kenyon, a Kane County Board member and the president of the forest preserve district, who he called a good friend. When Helm learned there was concern about the potential forest preserve district plan because of a loss of tax dollars, he saw an opportunity.

Helm said he previously considered the location, but he wasn’t interested in the existing building. He would use that building with the forest

preserve district’s blessing for a time, but then build his own structure. He said there is no other location in Elburn that would make sense for his business. Helm said he would buy about 5 acres of the property, which is in the area that currently is not in the village. The plan would call for that portion to be annexed into the village.

“I want to be on 47, south of Keslinger Road, in the village of Elburn,” Helm said. “That leaves very little property.”

Also, he said the timing was right, with Houtz’s retirement.

Kenyon strongly supports the plan for the forest preserve district to move ahead with its plans for the Route 47 location.

He said the existing building on the site is perfect for what is needed. He said it’s a place where seeds would be stored, and between 12 and 20 people would work out of the location.

Kenyon said the building at the location Frasz spoke of “is not near as good. It’s nowhere near ready. … Cheaper is not necessarily better.”

As far as concerns the land is better suited for commercial or retail use, Elburn Village Board members have debated the point. One member, Bill Grabarek, said he would be in favor of the purchase if Helm would construct a building on the property and be annexed into the village. Other trustees have indicated Helm being part of the deal will make them more likely to support it.

“I see some concern for losing real estate taxes,” Grabarek said. “With the Helm arrangement, we gain some of that back. … It’s on 47. It has a greater presence, both for Helm and for the forest preserve, for that type of operation. … It’s not an asphalt plant or a cement plant or a chemical plant. It’s not a noxious operation in any of those respects.”

Still, Frasz said there is a process to follow, and it could take “at least a couple of months” for it to work through the land acquisition committee and the full Kane County Board before it returns to the Elburn Village Board for approval. In the meantime, he will be touting his alternative location, which he said is south of Elburn.

“The big thing for me is the dollars for the alternative site,” Frasz said, adding it is “perfectly suitable” for what the department would need.

ELBURN – The former Elburn police officer charged with numerous counts of sexual assault could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted of each count, according to Kane County court records.

David Wright, 54, is accused of sexually assaulting a child he knew over a period of years, from March 21, 2005, to April 27, 2015. The child was younger than 13 when the assaults began, court records show.

He was indicted in June on 33 counts: 16 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony; 11 counts of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony; and six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office this month

filed a notice indicating the conduct alleged in the counts “constitutes a separate and distinct act from the conduct alleged in each of those counts,” according to court records.

Therefore, the David Wright records state, the minimum sentence would be 143 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections if Wright is convicted on each count.

Wright, of Campton Hills, pleaded not guilty in August.

He has been held in the Kane County Jail on $500,000 bond since his arrest April 27. He must post 10 percent – or $50,000 – to be released.

According to court records, he sought a bond reduction in August because he lacked “funds or means to meet the

St. Charles police question 3 in burglary investigation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A burglary on the city’s far east side Tuesday morning led to a police pursuit on Kirk Road, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

Officers responded to the 900 block of Equity Drive in St. Charles at 9:15 a.m. to investigate a report of a suspected vehicular burglary in progress involving three males, the release stated.

A witness also provided information about their vehicle,

which officers encountered at 9:17 a.m. in the 400 block of North Kirk Road traveling north, according to the release.

An officer following the vehicle reportedly attempted a traffic stop after witnessing a traffic violation. Instead of stopping, the release stated, the vehicle accelerated, fleeing from the marked squad.

As it continued north, the vehicle made numerous traffic violations and left the city’s jurisdiction on Dunham Road near Army Trail Road, according to the release. The

St. Charles officer returned to the original scene on Kirk Road after losing sight of the vehicle, the release stated.

According to the release, a regional dispatch was broadcast about the vehicle, its occupants and their suspicious activity.

At 9:31 a.m., the release stated, St. Charles police learned the vehicle was involved in a rollover crash and fire at Route 59 and Stearns Road in Bartlett. Two of the subjects required assistance in exiting the vehicle and were hospitalized for treatment,

according to the release. The release indicated they were being detained by St. Charles for further investigation.

The third occupant reportedly was taken into custody after fleeing on foot. He was taken to the St. Charles Police Department, the release stated.

When contacted with questions by email Tuesday afternoon, St. Charles Cmdr. Jerry Gatlin wrote in a reply “this is all that we are releasing at this time” and “we are actively conducting interviews and follow-ups.”

By BRENDA SCHORY GENEVA – In a 12-11 vote, the Kane County Forest Preserve Commission recently approved a resolution to support a tentative 2016-17 budget of $12.2 million.

The tentative budget is the basis for its 2015 levy request of just under $6.5 million, said Ken Stanish, finance director for the district. Levy requests always are a year behind.

Depending on how the district’s equalized assessed valuation is finalized next spring, the levy could reflect the first increase in three years, Stanish said. For 2012, 2013 and 2014, the levy was frozen, Stanish said.

With the previous levy at $6.4 million, the estimated increase could be $65,000 to $75,000 more for the district, he said.

sioners’ understanding that they would reduce it to the actual value of new construction,” Stanish said. “None of [the] EAV or new construction numbers are in, so we think it is going to be – give or take – around $65,000 in order to insure that we get all of the new construction.”

The recent vote was for levy purposes per state statute, Stanish said. The commission will vote on the levy request at its meeting next month, but will work on fine-tuning its budget beginning in January.

A homeowner with a house valued at $233,000 would see the property tax decrease by $2.14 for the year if a freeze were kept in place, Stanish said.

With the current proposal, the tax bill would drop by $1.75, a difference of 39 cents, Stanish said. But that would be true only if the property’s EAV remained the same, Stanish said.

“The difference is pretty small,” Stanish said.

Kane County board member Susan Starrett, R-North Aurora, was one of the 11 who voted against the tentative budget that would have increased the levy request.

“I made a promise never to increase taxes, and that’s what it was doing,” Starrett said. “I have kept that promise all the way through. It’s very simple. I had made the promise, no matter what it was.”

Although Starrett said she is “100 percent behind what the forest preserve does for the community and Kane County,” her constituents do not want her to raise any type of taxes.

Had the split vote been a tie, forest preserve President Mike Kenyon said he would have voted in favor.

“Really, we are increasing the dollar amount of the levy – but not the percentage,” Kenyon said. “We asked that new

construction pay into the levy.

When you build new stuff, it’s not included in the old EAV. So if you were going to keep up, you ask new people to pay what they should.”

Kenyon said those who voted against the increase “find it hard to explain to their constituents that they’re not raising their tax bill, but collecting taxes from new homes.

‘I promised not to raise taxes.’

They’re splitting hairs.”

“You do not do anybody any favors when you spend down all the money,” Kenyon added.

The additional funds would be used for salaries, equipment and maintenance, Kenyon said.

“In government, you not only have to spend money wisely, you have to make sure there’s enough money to do everything you have to do,” Kenyon said. “We have to provide enough money to do our job well.”

AURORA – A Sugar Grove man faces several charges, including a felony, after causing a crash on the Randall Road bridge over Interstate 88 in Aurora, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Travis J. Lake, 29, of the 0 to 100 block of Hanover Lane, was charged Oct. 17 with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an acTravis J. Lake cident, not having his driver’s license on his person, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and felony possession of a controlled substance.

Authorities responded to the scene just after 7 p.m. to find a Chevrolet Equinox with heavy rearend damage and Lake’s vehicle, a black Lexus GS350 with “substantial” frontend damage, a damaged windshield and airbag deployment, police reported.

Both vehicles reportedly were towed.

The passenger in the Chevrolet told police the Lexus was traveling at a high rate of speed behind them before the collision, according to the report.

The report indicated both the passenger and driver were hospitalized, and Lake – who was described as “very jittery and unable to focus” – refused treatment.

Residents, take note: The crack of gunfire might be heard more often this fall near the Fox River with the start of the state duck hunting season.

The river, which is under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, is bordered in many areas by Forest Preserve District of Kane County property and the property of different park districts.

It is not legal to carry loaded weapons through forest preserve district property, but boats can launch elsewhere to get onto the river and shoot waterfowl during designated hunting seasons, Kane County forest preserve spokeswoman Laurie Metanchuk said.

The duck hunting season for the state’s north zone – which includes Kane County – began Oct. 17 and will continue through Dec. 15. There also were youth waterfowl hunting days in the north zone Oct. 10 and 11, according to the DNR website dnr.illinois.gov.

Residents must have a current, valid hunting license, Harvest Information Program registration/certification and federal and state migratory waterfowl stamps with them at all times when hunting, according to the website.

At 8:25 a.m. Oct. 10, forest preserve officers met with Sugar Grove resident Eric Schaaf after he reported shots coming from an island on the Fox River between Les Arends Forest Preserve and Red Oak Park south of Batavia.

Police at the scene indicated the shots were from the youth hunt taking place that weekend, Metanchuk said.

Schaaf said Oct. 10 was the first time he had heard shots on the river in his 15 years of fishing and kayaking in the area. He said he is concerned the hunting is allowed so close to forest preserve and park district property where there is other wildlife.

“I’m not against hunters, but I want someone to take ownership of this,” Schaaf said.

Schaff said he has been in contact with Red Oak Nature Center staff to get some clarification on the islands from the DNR. As of Tuesday afternoon, Schaff had not received a response from DNR officials. Messages from a reporter to a DNR spokesman were not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.

Residents who hear gunshots and are not certain whether they are hunting related should call 911 immediately, Metanchuk said.

Government’s plan to register recreational drones doesn’t go far enough THE WASHINGTON POST Responding to a drastic uptick in the number of unmanned aerial vehicles – also known as drones – showing up in places they do not belong, the Obama administration announced last week that it will soon start requiring recreational drone owners to register their UAVs with the federal government. That’s fine. But it is not nearly enough.

The Federal Aviation Administration has struggled to keep a handle on the proliferation of drones flown by amateurs. As the number of UAVs in circulation has surged, so has the number of potentially dangerous encounters. Pilots flying manned aircraft now report more than 100 drone sightings a month, according to the FAA. Drones have been reported near airports and at high altitudes meant for larger, more regulated craft, even though federal rules ban them from flying within five miles of an airport or above 400 feet. One even flew over the park in front of the White House this year.

The dangers include unintentional collisions with jet engines and intentional violations of sensitive airspace for malicious purposes. But under the existing system, it is nearly impossible to track down who is violating the rules, so taking basic safety precautions is up to users, who may not even know about their responsibilities.

will have to submit to, will enable investigators to identify the owners of drones that crash, which will help them enforce the regulations that too many recreational operators flout.

Regulators also hope that forcing owners to register will improve awareness of – and voluntary compliance with – the rules: Owners will know what the regulations are and feel more exposed to scrutiny if they mess up.

Yet this is just the bare minimum the government should be doing, and it has taken far too long to get even here. Drones should be required to carry transponders that are difficult to deactivate so that they can be seen as they enter restricted airspace and so that investigators can easily identify owners. They also should be required to carry “geo-fencing” technology that renders drones incapable of flying where they are not supposed to go. These sorts of upgrades will make some UAVs more expensive.

They also may require an act of Congress. But they are worth the cost and effort.

Meanwhile, even as recreational drone registration is on a fast track for implementation, rules on commercial UAV operators have been very slow coming, holding back a range of tantalizing business uses for these tools.

(Retail giant Amazon.com, whose chief executive is Post owner Jeffrey Bezos, is among those investing in drone technology.) While the amateurs have had free rein, companies have been highly restricted. This should change – and quickly.

The No. 3 seeded Knights defeated No. 6 Plano, 25-20, 255. The Reapers capped their season at 14-18 overall while Kaneland (20-13-1) moves on to the regional title game against No. 2 Sterling. The Golden Warriors advanced after they beat No. 11 Mendota, 25-9, 25-12.

Earlier this season, Sterling defeated Kaneland in a three-game set in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference crossover contest, so the Knights like their chances at a regional title.

“If they come out, give it everything they have and start off strong, we can stick with them,” Kaneland head coach Cyndi Violett said. “Our goal is to stick with them the whole time.”

There were three early ties in Tuesday’s first set before Kaneland broke a 4-4 knot with three straight points, led

by kills from Katelyn Jablonski. After that, the Knights never trailed again.

The closest Plano came to catching up was when it reduced Kaneland’s lead to 1513 after three straight errors from the Knights. Once Hannah Nauert started to serve, however, she reeled off six straight points, including an ace, along with kills from Alex Anderson and Jablonski.

Jessica Weber’s kill gave Kaneland the 24-15 advantage,

but Plano managed the next five points before a tip kill from Chloe Filipski ended the first set.

“We started slow, and that’s been typical for us all season,” Violett said. “In the second game, we were a whole different team.”

With the exception of a 1-1 tie, Kaneland led the entire second set. The Reapers got stuck in Nauert’s serving rotation, which put the Knights ahead 16-3 after 12 consecutive points.

A kill from Plano’s Rachel Duffy stopped the streak, and after Kaneland served the ball into the net, the Knights’ next rally started again. They posted eight straight points, including back-to-back aces from Kathy Nguyen. The match-ender was on a kill from Jablonski.

“It was overwhelming, and the kids were talking about how they were nervous, excited and anxious, but also confident it could happen,” Plano coach Lisa Esmond said. “I couldn’t have asked for any more hustle in that first game.”

North Stars sweep way to final

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – St. Charles North’s journey down the girls volleyball state tournament trail began Tuesday night with a 20-mile trek to the Class 4A Waubonsie Valley Regional semifinal.

The North Stars will repeat the trip Thursday night to play for the regional crown after defeating Oswego, 25-22, 25-14.

North will face Waubonsie Valley in the title match.

“I think we came out and played a little flat. We didn’t seem to have the spark, or that sense of urgency, really,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said of the close score in the first game. “In the second set, we came out with a little bit more fire and just like maybe,

The Panthers kept pace with the North Stars in the first set, with the lead see-sawing back and forth between the two teams.

North (33-3) appeared to be pulling away in the middle of the set. After Oswego edged within one point, 12-11, the

North Stars went on a 6-2 run to take an 18-12 lead. The momentum then shifted back to Oswego. The Panthers capitalized on three North Stars hitting errors to tie the set at 18-all.

After Anna Jaskoviak’s ace put Oswego up, 19-18, Hawkins called a timeout.

“I told them [during the timeout] that they just needed to relax. Take a deep breath.

They played this game a million times and they know how to pass,” Hawkins said.

“We knew there were holes on their floor and that we just needed to exploit them.”

Oswego (17-16) pulled within a point at 23-22 before a Daley Krage kill and a Samantha Lappin ace sealed the victory.

“I think we had a really strong start in the first game. After that, we just got a little complacent, which is

something we try not to do,” North’s Jaclyn Taylor said.

“We just really want to focus on every game, every play.”

The North Stars took control early in the second set.

With the Panthers leading, 6-5, Nicole Thrun stepped up to the service line. Before her turn was over, North expanded its lead to 15-6, including three aces.

“I knew we just needed to get after it, make every point count and work as a team to get it done,” Thrun said.

An Allyson Manzella kill ended the North Stars’ streak, but Oswego did not threaten again.

Claire Anderson closed out the game with three straight kills, finishing with 15 for the match. Taylor contributed 20 assists, while Lappin had seven digs.

Defensive specialist Aleezah Washington sparked Plainfield North’s third-game comeback with three huge digs during one point. Her dig on the next point completed the Tigers’ four-point run and brought a Geneva timeout at 17-15.

“We stayed mentally tough,” Seitelman said. “We knew we still had the lead.”

The Vikings trailed, 2014, in the first set and rallied to cut the Tigers lead to one point on three different occasions, including 23-22, before losing the game’s final two points Geneva rattled off seven straight points, including two service aces from Loberg and two kills from Alex Mullen midway through the second set to break open the contest and cruise to a 10-point victory.

PLAINFIELD – The Geneva girls volleyball team rallied from an opening-set loss to top host Plainfield North in a 4A regional semifinal Tuesday night.

Winning the match 22-25, 25-15, 25-17, the Vikings advanced to Thursday’s regional championship against Naperville North.

When Plainfield North closed to 17-15 in the third and deciding set, Geneva (263) came out of a timeout to take eight of the game’s final 10 points and win the match.

“It felt good,” Loberg said of her scoring spree to end the match. “I was just trying to work with my teammates.

“I was nervous during the first game. I was nervous before we started,” Loberg said.

Confident Vikings rebound, advance

Kaneland senior quarterback Jake Marczuk said the Knights felt they let their coaches down when the team missed the IHSA playoffs in 2014.

The program left nothing to chance this fall, punctuating a 6-3 regular season with last Friday’s 41-7 rout of Rochelle to clinch a playoff berth.

Marczuk, who accounted for six total touchdowns in the game, earned a nod as the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank Athlete of the Week as a result. Here’s an edited transcript of his conversation with KCC sports editor Kevin Druley:

kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Moments after breaking their pose from a postgame photo, St. Charles East girls volleyball juniors Kyla Augustine and Alexis Jett sidestepped an oncoming referee stand with a smile.

Their reflexes might have suggested resting given all the Saints’ duo did during Tuesday’s 27-25, 25-27, 25-19 victory against Naperville Central. Instead, they kept moving well after East advanced to Thursday’s Class 4A St. Charles East Regional final against Neuqua Valley.

“I think it was always in the back of our minds that we know that can do this if we go out there and do the right things that we’ve been working on in practice,” said Augustine, an outside hitter.

East (24-12) saluted its raucous supporters, which included an Orange Fever student section that clearly knew the score. The group did not chant any premature proclamation of victory until singing parts of Steam’s “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” when a Redhawks hitting error gave the Saints a 24-18 lead in the final set.

Naturally, Naperville Central responded with a kill, but that set the stage for Schumacher, who brought six kills to a versatile attack that included Augustine (eight kills), Emily Schildmeyer (six).

“What kept us in that game was everybody’s energy,” said Jett, a defensive specialist. “Honestly, we were just scraping and having a good time. Staying in control during the play and having a good time afterwards.”

Always affable Saints coach Jennie Kull eventually gave way to grinning at the end of the night.

Still, for everything at which the Saints excelled – namely Ilona Willsey’s six aces from the service line – the Redhawks often found a response. Outside hitters Sarah Schank and Samantha Herron paced the attack, but Naperville Central coach Jeff Danbom said the Saints’ aggressive serving ultimately

East’s strategy forced the Redhawks into a higher-tempo offense than they’re usually accustomed, which helped the Saints to a final jolt of momentum. Naperville Central grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third set, but East scored 13 of the next 15 points. The cushion proved to be enough, even though the Redhawks eventually came as close as 21-18 down the stretch.

“I mean, even at the end of that game, they came back.

We had a nice lead and then

they started to come back,” Kull said. “As old as we are, we’re young. We’re new getting our lineup because we’ve had so many injuries, and now we’re back again.

“But the great part about that is we can use the bench.

The bench comes in and we’re able to use it. And they’re confident, because they’ve had to play.”

Augustine (ankle) and Schildmeyer (back) recently returned to the fold full-time after navigating injuries for the bulk of the season. Neither was in the lineup when the host Saints lost to Neuqua Valley in three sets on Oct. 1.

The Saints relish the chance at a rematch.

“It was kind of in the middle of the season. We had a few injuries. We were getting over a bump; we were in a slump,” Jett said. “But I’m excited to play them Thursday.”

St. Francis soccer gets soggy sectional win KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE HAMPSHIRE – A promising start for the Sterling boys soccer team turned into a rainsoaked disappointment.

The Golden Warriors struck first in a soggy Class 2A Hampshire Sectional semifinal against St. Francis, only to be overtaken by the speedy and skilled Spartans, who scored a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night.

Sterling ends its season at 19-2-3, while St. Francis (15-1-4) advances to take on Rockford Boylan, a 5-1 winner against Fenton in the first semifinal, on Friday.

St. Francis has now allowed just seven goals this season, and defense against a potent Sterling attack was the key in head coach Kevin Ward’s mind.

“We’ve been known as a de-

fensive team all year,” Ward said. “We turn our defense into offense, and we were finally able to do it after a while.”

The Golden Warriors struck first on a goal from Miguel Gallardo with 26:54 remaining in the first half. A nifty assist from Santana Trujillo, who headed the ball toward the St. Francis goal, set up the score. A little more than a minute later, however, St. Francis scored the equalizer on a goal from Josh Baker. Nick Roehl assisted on the play.

“It’s always important not to get down on yourselves after an early goal,” junior forward Zach Crescenzo said.

“Right away when we scored, that just made it a new game.”

The Spartans took the lead for good at the 13:45 mark of the first half. Leo Herard unleashed a shot from the left wing that was bobbled by

Golden Warriors goalkeeper James Roddy. The ball caromed right, and was put home

by Matthew Martin.

St. Francis further seized control of the game early in the second half when Crescenzo scored from close range to give his team a 3-1 lead.

Sterling, meanwhile, was largely unable to crack a St. Francis defense anchored by Ethan Grosam, Carney Herard and Timmy Pisarski.

“Their defense was well-organized,” Sterling coach Brian Cebula said. “We weren’t able to really penetrate them. We had possession, and we got the ball into typically dangerous scoring positions, but they did a really nice job to stay compact, stay organized, and deny our chances.”

Down 3-1, Sterling’s Tony Diaz, who entered the game with 49 goals this season, hit

the post with a shot from about 20 yards with 7:30 to play. He pulled up his jersey over his head after the miss, a sign of his frustration.

“It was a difficult game for us,” Diaz said. “They limited our chances, and we made a few mistakes out there.”

The Spartans’ icing on the cake came with just under four minutes to go, when Keenan Corrigan drove home a goal. St. Francis is now on a 16-game unbeaten streak, but that will be tested on Friday against Boylan.

“They look like a big, physical team,” Ward said. “I think we’re going to have our hands full. We’ve got to show up, play the best we’ve played all year, and just get ready for it.”

22 Guidelines advise statins

for those with heart disease

Dear Readers: In Tuesday’s column, I began to answer a reader’s question as to what I thought about the new statin guidelines. Today, I finish my necessarily long-winded answer.

Statin drugs have (at least) two powerful effects. They lower blood levels of LDL cholesterol (so-called “bad” cholesterol). They also fight inflammation.

Old guidelines said doctors should prescribe statins for people whose LDL cholesterol levels were high. New guidelines say doctors should prescribe statins to people who are at high risk for heart disease, even if their LDL cholesterol levels are not high.

These guidelines are controversial.

What are the risk factors for heart disease?

Age is a risk factor: The older a person is, the more likely he or she will have heart trouble.

Another risk factor is gender. Until they reach menopause, women are less likely to develop heart disease than men.

That probably is because a woman’s estrogen (female hormone) levels slow the development of atherosclerosis. Plaques of atherosclerosis are the cause of most heart disease in developed nations. In the United States, the average age of menopause is 51.

Yet another risk factor is other close relatives (parents, siblings) with heart disease – particularly at a young age.

Still other risk factors are high blood pressure, diabetes (including pre-diabetes) and eating lots of refined carbohydrates with a high glycemic load. If you are a smoker, or past smoker, that raises your risk.

Obesity, lack of regular exercise (even if you are not obese) and chronic kidney disease are risk factors.

To determine your risk of heart disease over the next 10 years, there are several different formulas. Your doctor (or you, online) can plug your risk factors into a formula, and back comes your heart disease risk.

The new guidelines my reader asked about, published in 2013, recommended a statin for anyone between 40 and 75 years of age who has a 7.5 percent or higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years. The guideline writers proposed a new formula for calculating the risk.

Some experts worried the new guidelines could overestimate the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

If so, lots of people would end up taking a statin, get little benefit from it and perhaps suffer side effects, such as muscle pain. A recent study led by Harvard researchers, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, seemed to show the worry was unwarranted.

My conclusion: The new guidelines appear to be an accurate way to decide who should be taking a statin. With new information coming in all the time, I reserve the right to change my mind. If I do, I’ll let you know.

Sometimes the feelings arrive after you get to know the person a little better. And if they never come, so what? You can still have fun and enjoy time with a guy who could become a good friend.

Teens: While the percentage of teens who mix alcohol and driving has been dropping slowly, it is still a major problem. A study funded by the National Institute on

Drug Abuse found about 30 percent of teens reported some exposure to impaired driving in the previous two weeks. Another 10 percent of those teens in the survey admitted they drove after having five or more drinks.

Although the report’s findings cut across geographic and socioeconomic lines, researchers have found students with stronger religious beliefs, higher grades and lower truancy rates had less risky driving habits. Girls were less likely than boys to drive after drinking. The major reason why teens find it difficult to get automobile insurance (and when they do, the premiums are usually higher), is motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for those ages 15 to 24, according to a National Vital Statistics Report.

Regardless of the driver’s age, alcohol and driving are a deadly duo but, unfortunately, many teen drivers feel invincible. They believe deadly crashes will happen to others, not to them. Sadly, alcohol and driving crashes kill all ages, especially teens.

What is the exception to the general rule?

Robert J. Sawyer, a Canadian science fiction writer who has won a Hugo and a Nebula award, said, “General principles should not be based on exceptional cases.”

That is true, but bridge thrives on exceptions. Over the last two days, we have looked at the general principle for a defender’s overruff: Do so with any singleton, doubleton king-low, doubleton queen-low, and with tripleton queen-low-low unless partner rates to be short in the suit. But do not overruff with an honor that will still score a trick later and a lower card that might have been promoted as a winner.

Does today’s deal fit the bill, or is it an exception? West is defending against four spades. He leads his singleton heart. East wins with his queen, dropping South’s jack, and returns the heart 10. After South ruffs with the spade queen, how should West defend?

In yesterday’s deal, West started with K-10-x of trumps, and by not overruffing, his 10 became a trick. In that deal, though, partner could not have an immediate entry.

Here, East has carefully led the heart 10, a suit-preference signal for diamonds. West should overruff and shift to a diamond.

East will take two tricks in that suit, then lead another heart to promote a second trump trick for West and result in down two.

Note that if West does not overruff at trick two, South will probably cash his spade ace, then turn to clubs to discard his diamonds and get home.

But, yes, he might not.

The key defensive point, though, is to overruff when your side has winners to cash in another suit.
