BATAVIA – Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Holly Deitchman has always regarded Batavia to be a happy place to live.

So she was not surprised the city was named the third happiest city in Illinois in a study done by www.creditdonkey.com, a credit card comparison and financial education website.

Batavia was ranked on seven criteria: restaurants, crime rate, commute, departure time, income, divorce rate and housing. Cities were narrowed to those with a population of 25,000 or more.

“It makes sense,” Deitchman said. “Look at the amazing restaurants we have.

And the amount of crime we have is minimal.”

Batavia was the only city in Kane County to make the list of 10 happiest cities. Moline was named the happiest city in the state.

One family displaced in apartment fire in Batavia Discarded smoking materials found to be cause of blaze

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After the smoke detector started going off in her apartment at the Lorlyn of Batavia apartment complex Monday afternoon, Stephanie McGlennon called 911, grabbed the hand of her young daughter and ran out of the building.

She is just thankful they were not injured after a fire damaged her third floor apartment.

Her 6-year-old son, Ryan, was at school at the time of the fire.

“My kids are all that matter to me,” McGlennon said.

They were the only family displaced by the fire. Firefighters have determined the fire started on the third floor balcony as a result of discarded smoking materials.

The blaze, which started

about 2:45 p.m., caused an estimated $70,000 in damage to the building and $5,000 to the contents.

One firefighter responding to the fire sustained a minor injury. Upon arrival, fire department crews found smoke on all three floors of the apartment building and visible fire and smoke at the roof line and third floor balcony in the rear of the building.

McGlennon and her fiancé, David Silva, have lived at the apartment complex on Lorlyn Circle for three years with their children, Ryan, 6, and Serena, 1½. Their apartment received water and smoke damage, and the fire caused extensive damage to the mansard roof on the exterior of the building By 3:30 p.m., firefighters had the fire under control, according to Batavia Fire Chief Ran-

getting out of the shower when he saw smoke entering the building.

“I’m just happy no one was hurt,” he said.

He has lived in the complex for two years, but plans to move out at the end of the month in order to be closer to his job in Lombard.

Economic incentive policy to be revamped

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen acting as the Committee of the Whole on Monday tabled a proposed economic development incentive policy for Geneva so its provisions could be amended.

The revamped policy is to be presented at the Nov. 11 meeting, officials said.

The policy was to provide formal guidelines to prospective businesses that are looking to locate in Geneva with expectations, officials said. A formal policy also would aid the council, staff, citizen commissions, as well.

But some of the aldermen objected to one of the policy’s guidelines – that a project needed to have a funding gap

in order to ask for an incentive. That is, but for assistance from the city, the project would not go forward, and the applicant had to prove the need exists, officials said.

Assistance could come through the tax increment finance district, a business improvement district, special service areas, property tax

abatement, waived fees, recapture agreements or discretionary city revenue, according to the proposed policy.

Economic Development Director Ellen Divita said some incentives, as from the tax increment finance district, legally require a funding gap.

But 2nd Ward Alderman Donald Cummings objected,

saying he did not want the requirement to stop a business from coming to the city.

“I can imagine a business coming to us and saying, ‘I have the money to do what I want to do, and I’d like a break,’ ” Cummings said. “I could see myself reacting positively to that.”

city would help a business that did not need the money.

“These are public dollars,” Divita said. “I don’t think it would be fair to existing businesses.”

But 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian said the city should not have a policy that might turn away potential development.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com For 30 years, Sandra Wright suffered with digestive problems and never once found a doctor who could – in her words – “connect the dots and say, ‘Let’s test you for celiac disease.’ ” “I actually diagnosed myself with a test and lab report,” said Wright, 74, of North Aurora.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that attacks and damages the lining of the small intestine, according to the National Institutes of Health. The inflammation is a reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats.

Celiac disease has more than 300 symptoms recognized symptoms, including diarrhea, gas, bloating, constipation, belching and heartburn, Wright said.

“There is no medicine for celiac disease,” Wright said.

“There is only a gluten-free diet. You learn how to eat differently.”

Wright read everything she could about her condition and saw a dietitian. She said “the dietitian cost me $150, and I got 15 cents worth of information.”

In her pursuit of information, Wright said she began going to support groups to learn more. She drove to Chicago, Rockford, Skokie, Peoria and Evanston to network with other fellow sufferers and learn from them.

“I could not believe that I could not find a local support group,” Wright said. “We needed a support group here in the Fox Valley ... so I started one.”

The Aurora CD and GS Support Group meets at 7 p.m. the last Monday of each month in the Moore Room at Presence Mercy Medical Center, 1325 N. Highland Ave., Aurora. CD stands for celiac disease, and GS stands for gluten sensitivity. Wright said it was easier to abbreviate than spell everything out.

diseases, Wright said. About a dozen members come from all over, including Aurora, Sugar Grove, Hinckley, Sandwich and Downers Grove.

Among them is Aurora resident Nicole Schade, 34, and Sugar Grove resident Doris Czarobski. Both have celiac disease.

“I learn from the others in the group and appreciate the opportunity,” Czarobski said.

“And sometimes they know of stores where to find foods or even trade recipes, [and] that

has been helpful. I think it was brilliant on [Wright’s] part to get the cooperation of Mercy hospital to be able to use their room.”

For Schade, who works at her husband’s business, Proview Realty in Aurora, the support group is an important opportunity to be with others who face the same issues.

Schade said she had symptoms since she was 7, but she was not diagnosed until she was 26. She has followed the gluten-free diet ever since.

“We bring snacks, and I don’t have to worry and ask 20 questions: ‘Is there wheat in this? Can I see the label?’ ” Schade said. “It’s a group of people who know what it is like to be paranoid about everything that goes into your mouth. It’s just nice to be with a group of people that get it.”

Wright sees the group not only as support, but providing information, resources and advocacy.

during the hearing. She called the protective order request standard and said the videos, some of which was taken from the front of a train, provides a view of Union Pacific’s operations not typically available to the public.

There are Illinois Supreme Court rules that dictate how the evidence is used and distributed, said Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress, Shadwick King’s attorney.

“There are a number of things they are requesting that don’t have a basis in law,” Childress said.

Childress said members of the press would have to follow elaborate rules if they wanted to obtain a copy of the footage.

Judge James Hallock also referenced the Illinois Supreme Court in his denial of the protective order. He said all parties that receive the videos still have to follow regulations. Immediately after Hallock’s ruling, Graham each gave Childress and Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams a manila envelope that contained a disc with instructions on how to view the contents.

Before they discussed Union Pacific’s motion, Childress said the city of Geneva did turn over materials that were subpoenaed back in August and September. A petition for rule against the Geneva Police Department for the matter was withdrawn. Shadwick King’s next court date is Nov. 19.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County judge on Monday denied Union Pacific Railroad’s motion for a protective order in a murder case involving a Geneva man.

Union Pacific Railroad sought the protective order for subpoenaed video recorded on the Union Pacific West line between West Chicago and Geneva from 5:45 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. on July 6. At 6:37 a.m. on that day, the body of Kathleen King was spotted by a train operator on the southernmost Union Shadwick King Pacific Railway tracks south of Esping Park, less than a half-mile from her east-side Geneva home, according to Geneva police.

Kathleen King’s husband, Shadwick King, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in her death. He appeared in court on Monday during the hearing on the protective order.

“Union Pacific does not seek to avoid production of the videos; it seeks the Court’s intervention to ensure that reasonable measures will be taken to protect the sensitive nature of these videos and ensure that they will not be released to the press, placed on the Internet, or used outside litigation,” wrote the railroad’s attorneys in a Oct. 21 motion.

The money will reimburse the city for the purchase of 25 new trees, which were planted this month by Sebert Land-

scape at various locations along and adjacent to State Street. During the past two years, the committee has donated $20,000 to plant 55 parkway trees in the downtown.

BatFest attendance reaches about 3,000

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The summer-like weather on Saturday played a big role in packing downtown Batavia with residents for the annual BatFest, its organizers said.

“To have a 72-degree day, that’s amazing,” said Joi Cuartero, Batavia Mainstreet executive director. “I’m going to say there were at least 3,000 people in the span of four hours.”

The Halloween-themed BatFest is one of Batavia MainStreet’s free family events and features dancing, games, pumpkin carvings and trick-or-treating.

Organizers said at least a third of BatFest attendance was made up of children, many of whom wore costumes as they collected candy at more than 70 participating businesses. Griselda Delgado of First State Bank in Batavia handed out treats and had a bean-bag toss on the Batavia Riverwalk. She was joined by her family, including sons Omar, 12, Jonathan, 10, and Gio, 4.

Another annual tradition could be the Music Matters Fall Festival, which held its inaugural event Saturday in conjunction with BatFest.

The festival had a petting zoo, bounce house, train rides, live music and arts and crafts, Music Matters School Director Jeff Matter said.

“It was a lot of fun, a huge

success and we’re just glad everybody got to have a fun fall day,” Matter said.

WASCO – The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District has planned an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fox River Station 1, 40W361 Route 64 in Wasco.

In next week’s election, select voters in the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District will face a choice of whether to remain with the Elburn fire district or to join the Fox River district.

According to a news release, “the purpose of the meeting is to provide accurate information to residents in the petition area.”

ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles leaf collection program runs from today to Nov. 26 for residents who live within city limits.

The leaf pickup program has been modified this year.

It will run similarly to the brush pickup program, with the collection areas divided on the east and west sides of the river.

The complete leaf collection schedule and program details can be found on the city’s website, www.stcharlesil.gov/ services/leaf.

Leaves must be on the parkway by 6:30 a.m. on the designated day of pickup, but it may take three to four days before the leaves are picked up in a specific area.

As an alternative, residents may put leaves in yard waste bags, which will be collected by Advanced Disposal on normal collection days through Nov. 26.

Butera store to close by Nov. 1

Butera Market at 2732 E. Main St. in St. Charles has signs on its front doors announcing the closing without a specific date and with the message, “Thank you for your past patronage.”

The store also reduced its hours on Oct. 22 and will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day until it closes for business.

“We might do a half-day on [Nov. 1]; that’d be the latest we’d be open,” store manager Dave Peterson said. “Everything in the building is 20 [percent] to 40 percent off and dwindling quickly.”

The store in September began an inventory reduction sale with select items starting at 20 percent off. Since the sale went storewide, items such as cigarettes have sold out, Peterson said.

St. Charles resident Connie Stadler, who shopped at the store on Saturday, said she usually goes there twice a month. She said the store carries some good deals but appears to have changed since it first opened in March 2004.

“It’s time,” Stadler said of the store closure.

When any store location is closed, it’s always the company’s plan to offer employees a chance to transfer to the other locations, Butera said during the September phone interview.

Butera said by year’s end the company will open a store at 20 Tyler Creek Plaza in Elgin, giving that city its second Butera location.

B L A C K B E R R Y T O W NSHIP – Not long after dawn on Sunday, hundreds of people gathered at Marklund near Geneva for the nonprofit organization’s second annual Run, Walk and Roll 5K/1-mile event.

As the participants lined up near the starting line, Marklund President and CEO Gil Fonger wished for each of them to set a personal record but also encouraged them to like the organization on Facebook.

While focused on physical activity, the event is a way to raise awareness about Marklund, Fonger said after the participants set off on the course that wound through the Mill Creek subdivision in Blackberry Township.

What Marklund does can be boiled down to this, he said: making everyday life possible for people with profound disabilities.

Sunday’s event is one of several – including a winter black-tie function, a spring golf outing and a fall pancake breakfast – that support Marklund, Fonger said.

Marklund serves 117 fulltime clients a year, he said, and state funding falls about $16,000 short of what is needed per person, per year.

He said that means Marklund annually has to raise about $2 million to fund that gap.

The Run, Walk and Roll 5K/1-mile event raised about $30,000 for Marklund’s programs and services in its first year. This year’s event – which had an even bigger turnout of more than 700 people – was expected to raise more than $40,000, Fonger said.

“It’s huge,” he said.

For 21-year-old certified nursing assistant Sinai Chapa and her two coworkers, participating in the event was a way to support – and represent – the children they work with at Marklund, she said.

“We love the kids at the children’s home,” Chapa said. “We wish they could be with us.”

Ultimate responsibility with only limited authority Before I was elected to serve as Kane County Board chairman, I was warned that, with 24 strong-willed board members each representing about 25,000 constituents, it would be like “herding cats.” This has not been my experience.

For the most part, our Kane County Board members are conscientious, hard-working, intelligent people, devoted to their work on your behalf.

What I have found challenging is the way Illinois law assigns responsibility collectively, but reserves authority individually, among countywide elected members of the county executive team, including the sheriff, county

clerk, circuit court clerk, state’s attorney, treasurer, auditor, recorder and coroner.

The fundamental dilemma is the chairman has responsibility for the annual budget and levy of county property taxes, but once the countywide elected officials have their budgets approved, my authority ends, and I cannot limit how these agency budgets are spent.

Pending Republican win demands a better agenda BLOOMBERG NEWS Allow us to be the first to congratulate Republicans on their victory. The election is not until next week, but it seems pretty clear that, come January 2015, they will control both chambers of Congress. (And if they don’t, check back here for an explanation and a helping of humble pie.)

Now the question is what they intend to do with their newfound power. At a conservative think tank last month, House Speaker John Boehner gave a speech titled “Five Points for Resetting America’s Economic Foundation.” It was billed as a policy framework for Republican governance, exactly the sort of plan a party leader should deliver in advance of a national election. Unfortunately, Boehner’s remarks were so bland as to resist analysis, never mind debate. And, given the realities of a polarized electorate and a divided government, there is a limit to how much a Republican Congress might accomplish.

Could that limit prove surprisingly high? Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, earlier this year produced a viable blueprint for tax reform – which promptly went nowhere.

Camp plans to retire in January, but that shouldn’t prevent his colleagues from resurrecting his plan. Pending trade agreements have supporters in both parties. Get them on a legislative track. Infrastructure spending can’t wait until all the bridges collapse. Roll out (at historically low borrowing costs) some investments – and claim credit for the jobs created.

AURORA – The Rosary volleyball team had an advantage over almost all other teams in the state when it came to cultivating a close-knit team this fall.

The Royals, who open postseason play tonight with an IHSA Class 3A regional semifinal on their home court, have six sisters on their bench if you count head coach Rachel Hartmann and her assistant, Christine Hartmann.

Senior Grace Konovodoff and sophomore Martha Konovodoff, of Sugar Grove, and senior Michaela Ping and junior Rachel Ping, of Batavia, tighten the Royals’ sisterly fabric.

Rachel Hartmann reports “all upside” to the familial ties, saying the siblings have been supportive and avoided distractions. That wouldn’t be the case with all sets of sisters, she acknowledged.

“We kind of got the best of the bunch I think,” Rachel Hartmann said. “They make each other better. Especially Michaela and Rachel who are in the same position mostly playing [middle hitter], they help each other out a lot, on the court, off the court.

“And they can maybe communicate better. Sometimes Christine will explain something better to me than someone else could, so someone who’s in your position and then someone who’s a sister … I think it makes them closer together as a team and I think more competitive to have their sister around

Former U.S. Olympic volleyball player Caren Kemner is a cousin of the Ping sisters’ mother. With those kind of volleyball bloodlines in the family, it’s no secret why they gravitated toward volleyball.

“[Kemner] I think definitely was looking for other volleyball players in the family so our parents have always been like you’ve got to try it and see if you like it,” Michaela Ping said.

They did, and their shared bond through the sport rekindled this year as Rachel joined Michaela on Rosary’s varsity

team.

“Usually on our off time, especially in tournaments when we’re together, we’ll play pepper, play off the wall,” Rachel Ping said. “We never really stop playing volleyball even though it’s our off time.”

The Konovodoff girls can relate, both to living up to a family’s volleyball legacy and

the intensity with which the sport engulfs their time and thoughts. Their older sister – former Rosary standout Abigail Konovodoff – plays collegiately at Division-I Fordham, and Grace Konovodoff has committed to play at Robert Morris.

Batavia moves beyond regional opener

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com NAPERVILLE – It hasn’t been an easy road this season for the Batavia girls volleyball team, the No. 16 seed in the IHSA Class 4A Bartlett Sectional.

But the journey will continue after the Bulldogs’ gritty 25-22, 25-21 victory Monday in a tough match against No. 17 Glenbard North in a 4A Neuqua Valley Regional opener.

After coming up on the short end of a long match-point rally, Maddie Jaudon dove to save the ball on the next point, giving Jancy Lundberg a chance to kill it a moment later. Lundberg’s fourth kill of the set and fifth on the evening sent Batavia into a semifinal match against No. 1 seed Benet Academy tonight.

“With a school like us, a

first win is something so big,” Jaudon said. “We’ve had a lot of teams that have gone far but also a lot of teams that haven’t had the luck to do that. It’s really nice for us to get this first win under our belt. We just have to keep going.”

Batavia (13-23) rallied from an early 9-5 hole in the first set to gain its first lead at 13-12.

The two sides traded runs from there, with the Bulldogs jumping out to a 21-15 lead.

But Glenbard North wouldn’t go away, with the Panthers rallying to within a point at 22-21 before the Bulldogs finally put the set away with an ace from Katelynn Fegan.

The second set didn’t get any easier.

Batavia opened up a 6-2 lead early, but the Panthers clawed back to tie it at 11.

Grace and Martha Konovodoff are among seven siblings but share an especially strong relationship, largely because of their time as volleyball teammates. They are in their second year together playing for the Royals.

Rachel Ping said she and Michaela “can always sense what each other needs and how to help each other out” on the court, and Martha Konovodoff also considers the ability to be extra candid with one another a valuable sisterly privilege.

“I really enjoy playing with Grace because we definitely connect with each other,” Martha Konovodoff said. “She’s my best friend so it’s really nice playing with her. But at times, it can be frustrating. If

one of us messes up, we don’t hide anything from each other.

So on the court, we definitely are honest with each other, but it’s the best experience I could ever have, playing with my older sister.”

As for the coaches, Rachel Hartmann admitted she and Christine “used to fight like crazy when we were younger,” but said much of that stopped during the one season their Rosary careers overlapped.

Rachel Hartmann (Rosary class of 2005) went on to play college volleyball at Minnesota before Christine Hartmann (class of 2008) played at Kentucky.

Once Christine Hartmann’s job relocated back to the Chicago area two years ago, Rachel Hartmann coaxed her to come aboard as assistant coach when she began her season season on the job.

The Royals (19-17) appear to have a favorable early path in the Class 3A postseason.

They’re the top seed at a regional in which Plano or Aurora Central Catholic likely will provide the stiffest competition.

Astling was aided largely by setter and captain Sam Bradle, who had a team-high 14 assists to go along with 12 digs on the night.

The pre-game report and preparation enabled Astling to hit a variety of winners.

“They were giving me sets than enabled me to hit different shots,” Astling said. “I was able to get tight sets where I was able to tip them to our spots in our scout report. They were setting me far out so I could do that cut shot. They let me hit line. It was really just letting me hit all of the shots that we were supposed to hit.”

Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne credited Glenbard North for playing a closely

contested match and said they were better than the scouting report indicated.

“We watched film on Glenbard North and had a couple scout reports on them,” Trippi-Payne said. “They played a lot better than what we had on them. I give them a lot of credit; Glenbard North played a great match tonight.”

Trippi-Payne said her side didn’t play its best match but made the necessary adjustments to prevail.

“Credit our girls; I thought we served them tough and we did a good job playing some good defense,” she said. “I thought we picked up a lot of things and kind of settled down early in the match; our blocking wasn’t looking good and then we started to block.

We started to play a little better.”

Jaudon tied the team lead with 12 digs in the game.

The two-time defending Class 3A state champions were shipped north for a change, and the Spartans have to love their chances to prevail at the Regina Dominican Regional. It could be a postseason crash course between top-seeded St. Francis and nearby foe Wheaton Academy, but that would have to wait until a sectional final.

POTENTIAL DARK HORSE Limited candidates here, considering Geneva, St. Charles East, St. Francis, Kaneland, Rosary and Wheaton Academy are each favored to win their regionals. So let’s go with North. Difficult of a spot as the North Stars find themselves in, a tall, talented roster and the North Stars’ late-season uptick suggest North could be a handful this week.

With Piron now in full playoff mode, the ritual of watching other teams’ games only intensifies. Because of Kolowski’s own sweat equity, however, the Bulldogs can break things down from the convenience of school or their own dens.

“Coach Kolowski, he’s pretty special,” Piron said.

Saturday it is: Speaking a few minutes after his team learned of its Class 7A, firstround game against visiting Hersey, Geneva coach Rob Wicinski sounded confident about the prospects of a Friday night kickoff.

“Sometimes those schools a little bit further east, they think we’re in Wisconsin,” Wicinski said then. “But a big school like that, I think they’ll be willing to come in and play on a Friday.”

But the Vikings and Huskies will kick off at 1 p.m.

Saturday, continuing a trend.

Seven of the eight first-round games involving Chronicle-area teams are set for Saturday.

Statewide, just 31 of the 128 first-round games over Illinois’ eight classes are slated for Friday.

Batavia, climbing up in class from last season’s landmark run through the IHSA football playoffs, opens its bid for a second straight state title against defending Class 7A champion Mt. Carmel in a first-round, 7A game.

Bulldog Stadium has hosted some big games before, but the one coming to town at 1:30 p.m. Saturday certainly could rank near the top.

“You’re looking at a team that plays in one of the best conferences in the country [Chicago Catholic Blue] with a longstanding history of great success not only in the playoffs, but for winning state championships. That’s what they do there at Mt. Carmel,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said.

“If we’re going to go 7A, we might as well play someone like that, you know. … We’re thrilled with the quality of the opponent and the game that we’re about to have.”

Batavia (8-1) clinched its fourth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title Friday. Two of its casualties during a 7-0 run through conference play, Geneva (8-1) and St. Charles North (7-2), join the Bulldogs in 7A. Geneva’s first-round foe, Hersey (6-3), routed North’s first round foe, Rolling Meadows (7-2), 48-6 on Friday night.

The Vikings open the playoffs at home, while the North Stars begin on the road.

Apart from living in the north suburbs when he coached Niles North “in the day,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski admits little knowledge of or experience with Hersey. This time of year, that’s the way he likes it.

“We really don’t have too many connections with Hersey, but it’s cool,” Wicinski said. “The playoffs are

No. 9 seed North’s firstround game at No. 8 Rolling Meadows pits North coach Rob Pomazak against his alma mater.

But Pomazak, a class of 1996 Rolling Meadows graduate, said the novelty of facing the Mustangs has expired after many matchups against them when he coached at Elk Grove.

Pomazak suggested Rolling Meadows’ season-ending blowout loss likely was “an anomaly” for the Mustangs.

“I think they’re a very good football team,” said Pomazak, who said he guessed Rolling Meadows might be North’s opponent in the wee hours Saturday morning once it appeared Rolling Meadows would bump up to 7A from 6A. “I know coach Matt Mishler does a very good job. Their offense is going to be very dynamic, and we have our hands full. We really relish our opportunity here.”

Marmion (6-3) will visit DeKalb (8-1) in Class 6A, meaning the Cadets will try to wrangle Illinois-bound running back Dre Brown on the

Barbs’ turf field. Cadets coach Dan Thorpe’s first inclination is the Cadets must keep Brown and Co. off the field as much as possible to pull the upset.

“I’m sure if you’re going 8-1, people have tried to focus on stopping Dre Brown, so I assume the other players have stepped up,” Thorpe said.

“You go 8-1, you have a nice team, so I’m sure there are some other skilled kids and linemen. I don’t know if they’re big or small or what but we’ll find out in the film exchange that we do with them.”

St. Francis, Marmion’s brethren in the Chicago Catholic Green, also is part of the 6A field, its first time in that class after making its past five postseason trips as a 5A team. The Spartans (7-2) host Grayslake North (6-3) in the first round.

Landing in Class 5A didn’t shock Burlington Central coach Rich Crabel, who commenced crunching the numbers from the time the Rockets boarded the bus after Friday’s regular season-ending romp at Rockford Christian.

It’s a rare condition when a football coach embodies a car insurance slogan.

Leave it to Batavia assistant Adam Kolowski, whose colleagues often “go to ‘The General’ and save some time.”

Kolowski earned his nickname for his meticulous preparation and penchant for the little things, such as always having cleat cleaners handy. He arguably makes his biggest mark through advance scouting, though.

Batavia’s freshman coach, Kolowski routinely analyzes the IHSA’s weekly playoff outlook and organizes his own scouting trips and those for others on the freshman staff.

He already has foraged footage of 2015 Bulldogs opponents South Elgin, Oswego and Naperville Central, to boot.

“You can never have enough film. That’s all we’ve got to say,” Kolowski said.

Batavia, which hosts Mt. Carmel in a Class 7A firstround playoff game at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, landed in 7A from the earliest projections. That added a wrinkle to Kolowski’s preparation after the Bulldogs, the largest 6A team in 2013, won the 6A state title last fall.

Despite the prominence of Hudl and other online film services – plus the two-game exchange policy between opponents – Batavia harps on building its own library.

“You never know if you might get a shady film or there’s plays missing,” Kolowski said. “Or just the zoom. There’s no wide shots or something. Coaches know what other varsity coaches want to see.”

“General” Kolowski is quick to note he didn’t develop this philosophy. At Batavia, at least, it’s a trickle-down effect from offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari, the Bulldogs’ head coach from 1985 to 2010 before handing over the reins to friend and longtime assistant Dennis Piron.

Tandem jokes about past tiff Kaneland senior girls tennis athletes Jelly Emmanouil and Madi Jurcenko withstood the usual on-court challenges during two IHSA state tournament matches against Sloane Williams and Kendall Scruggs of Whitney Young.

When the Dolphins duo offered verbal volleys from disputed line calls to boot, Emmanouil and Jurcenko worked to grin and bear it.

A memory from childhood ultimately eased that process.

Before teaming up as Kaneland sophomores, Emmanouil and Jurcenko occasionally opposed one another in junior tournaments growing up.

Once, there was a minor dustup. Very minor, Jurcenko assured before laughing again. “[Emmanouil] called a line judge on me in the fifth grade because she basically thought I was cheating, so that’s funny,” Jurcenko said.

“It was not a big deal. It was just funny.”

Williams and Scruggs proved far more contentious during a third-round match that began Thursday but was postponed until Friday due to darkness.

On Saturday, the Dolphins were more concise than confrontational, winning in two sets in a consolation quarterfinal to end Emmanouil and Jurcenko’s tournament.

“They were the type of players that if something was on their minds, they would say it, and that’s OK,” Jurcenko said.

Like many counterparts around the state, Emmanouil and Jurcenko, who finished 35-2 as seniors, share a friendship in addition to one side of the court.

However, they are just one in the other’s social network, which seems to fuel their oncourt success.

“We get along really well.

We’re not the best of friends outside of school, but we’re still really good friends,” Jurcenko said. “I think the fact we don’t spend every wak-

ing moment with each other helps us keep the tennis part stronger. We don’t bring any outside problems into it, because we don’t have them.”

It’s been about a month since the Cougars and D’backs agreed to a two-year PDC that begins next season, but for all that figures to be new around Fifth Third Bank Ballpark next season, plenty remains familiar.

Among the returning promotions for the Cougars’ 25th anniversary season in 2015 are Thirsty Thursdays, Nancy Faust appearances on Sunday Fundays and the ballpark concert series. Individual promotions will be announced at a later date. The Cougars host Cedar Rapids in the season opener at 6:30 p.m. April 9.

Peavy open to Cubs

Jake Peavy has a better idea: a package deal.

“No, I’m not offering a package to the Cubs,” the San Francisco Giants pitcher said, clarifying the impression he made while talking about himself, the Cubs and his pal, Lester. “There’s a package deal out there for any teams.”

Lester and Peavy added to a mix that might include star manager Joe Maddon running the show?

Imagine that one while watching Peavy take the mound for the Giants tonight in a Game 6 start with a chance to beat the Kansas City Royals for his second World Series ring in as many years.

Peavy didn’t want to talk too much about his pending free agency with World Series work left to do, but the former Cy Young winner has the Cubs at the top of his wish list this winter, according to sources close to him.

He wouldn’t confirm that, but he did rave about his experiences playing for the White Sox, the city of Chicago and the plan he sees coming together on the North Side.

And after winning a World Series with Lester last year in Boston, Peavy believes he and his friend can deliver double-barreled, left-right impact to any team’s rotation next season as a pair of proven winners.

“Me and Jon are obviously very close,” he said. “If there was ever a fit with both of us on the team, certainly that would interest me. I know what he brings to the table.

We have a crazy good friendship, and I know how bad he wants to win, and I know he’s not going to go to a situation for however many years he signs [for] to lose. …

“You never know what free agency brings. I’ve certainly talked to Jon Lester because we’re buddies. So I have a feel for what he does.

And I certainly know that Chicago would interest him and interest me, both.”

“That’s awesome. We’re very happy about the opportunity to play at home,” Crabel said. “You can figure all you want going into [Saturday], but until you see it, you don’t know.”

might be split into quadrants.

With Geneva heading to the north bracket, Fabyan Parkway served as the de facto Mason-Dixon line. If Batavia defeats Mt. Carmel, which won its final three games to become playoff-eligible after a 2-4 start, the Bulldogs could travel to Belleville West in the second round.

The Maroons travel to Bradley-Bourbonnais in the first round. IHSA officials’ policies weren’t for Piron to figure out.

“Who knows why they do what they do,” he said. “I mean, we’ll never know. It’s a very unusual process with so many variables and so little predictably. But that’s what makes it fun.”

Well, in some circles, anyway.

Wheaton Academy tied Aurora Christian for the 256th and final berth in the eightclass field. Although both for-

mer Suburban Christian Conference rivals had 39 playoff points – the total of opponents’ victories – the Eagles earned the edge via tiebreaker. They played more playoff qualifiers, 4-3.

Aurora Christian (5-4) travels to defending 2A champion Sterling Newman (9-0) in the first round in 3A. Wheaton Academy ends its season with a 5-4 record, one of 22 teams with that distinction statewide.

“It’s pretty devastating,” Warriors coach Brad Thornton said. “You’ve got a whole range of emotions going through you. You’re frustrated and you feel awful for your players, especially your seniors, who their goal all along had been to make the playoffs. ... I really felt the work they put in this season was enough, and I really thought they deserved the chance to play in the playoffs.”

“It definitely deflter playing through wet conditions in the previous loss.

Larson said that the loss helped from a tactical outlook as the Bulldogs were able to avoid making the mistakes this time around.

“I think in that game we found out who their main forward was so we knew who to stop,” he said. “Going the other way, we knew how to exploit their weaknesses.”

With Benet next up for the Bulldogs, the team will have its work cut out for it in order to reach the sectional championship game.

“It will probably a good match,” Gianfrancesco said.

“They’re a well-coached team and it’s going to take a valiant effort by us to move forward from there. We’ll enjoy this tonight, we’ll enjoy it tomorrow. We’ll enjoy it for most of Monday but we’ll get back to work at 3 o’clock on Monday afternoon.”

With plenty of quality teams unexpectedly being unceremoniously bumped off this postseason, DiBiase said focusing on what his side can control would be key to continuing to progress through the tournament.

“We expect tough competition,” he said. “It’s playoffs; anything can happen so we need to go in and do our best work.”

While the win was cause for celebration, advancing deeper than last season won’t satisfy a team bent on achieving more.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com GLENDALE HEIGHTS – While it was disappointing to Chronicle-area girls cross country teams that Wheaton Warrenville South won Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A Glenbard North Regional, the squads were still happy with their results.

The top six teams advance to next week’s St. Charles East Sectional, and Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North all made the cut.

Geneva took second place in the meet held at Camera Park, scoring 60 points to Wheaton Warrenville South’s 56. North took third with a score of 77 and East came in fourth, tallying 91 points.

“The goal is finish in the top six and move on. It’s nice to win, but second is treated the same as sixth, so we are moving on,” Geneva coach Bob Thomson said. “We knew coming into the meet that it would probably be between us, Wheaton Warrenville South and St. Charles East.

That’s pretty much the way things played out.”

East, which placed its five runners in the top 15, won the boys regional with a score of 40. Geneva came in second (72) and North took fourth (91). All will be part of the sectional field in St. Charles this weekend. Leading the Saints was Mark Sciurba, who finished second in 14:55.8. Kyle Cepeda of Wheaton Warrenville South won in 14:34.0.

AURORA – A year after falling at this hurdle, the Batavia boys soccer team became regional champions on Saturday night.

Ian Larson’s pair of goals helped the No. 2 seed Bulldogs to a 3-0 win over No. 7 Neuqua Valley to emerge as IHSA Class 3A Metea Valley Regional Champions.

The win earned some redemption for Batavia after falling to Neuqua, 3-1, on Oct. 14 in a crossover and propelled the Bulldogs into a sectional semifinal against Benet on Wednesday at Bolingbrook.

The two sides went into halftime level at 0-0 after a first half that saw as many fouls as quality scoring chances. The chippy play carried over, finally resulting in the match’s first goal in the 60th minute after Batavia’s Kevin Collins was taken down outside the 18.

Wildcats midfielder Xavi Ortiz was issued a yellow card for a challenge from behind, giving Batavia its best chance of the night to that point.

Larson stepped up on the ensuing free kick from 20 yards out and netted home a left-footed strike, besting Neuqua Valley goalkeeper Brady Moody far post.

“I just knew that the goalie would be screened and wouldn’t know what to do so I tried to keep my shot low and in the corner,” Larson said.

The momentum from the goal helped to open the floodgates after possession had largely been 50-50 for the first three quarters of the match.

Davis DiBiase took a ball down the left flank in the 71st minute before sending a cross onto the foot of Luke Laurich, who beat Moody near post to double the lead.

“The ball was played in diagonally and I saw two guys, Luke at the top of the box and someone making a far post run,” DiBiase said. “No one was marking Luke so I sort of just bent it in so he could take a one-time shot.”

But Halloween decorations are in such demand today that there are even mail-order catalogs and pop-up stores that feature nothing but Halloween. The idea behind Halloween goes back centuries, but the first Halloween parties that resembled modern celebrations of the holiday were costume parties for adults in the 1880s and 1890s. Costumes from those parties - some of the earliest Halloween collectibles - were almost always homemade. Pressed-paper “veggie people,” jack-o’-lanterns and other Halloween decorations were being made by the 1900s, mostly in Germany. By the 1920s, jack-o’lanterns were made of a composition material, holes were made for the eyes and mouth, and a handpainted piece of paper was glued inside to create a finished face.

By the 1950s Halloween decorations were being made of hard plastic, and in the 1990s a strange sponge-like plastic was popular for soft jack-o’-lanterns. Pre-1950 Halloween memorabilia is scarce, so prices are high. But beware: Many reproductions of early paper jacko’-lanterns and Halloween candy containers have been made in Japan. New mail order catalogs sell copies of old pieces along with new life-size witches, ghosts, skeletons and zombies, as well as tombstones, black cats and huge blow-up monsters and spiders.

A: Pennsylvania enacted a law regulating the manufacture of stuffed toys for retail sale in 1961, so your toy dog is less 53 years old. The law has been amended several times.

It requires “All New Material” or “All New (Type) Material,” free from dangerous or harmful sub-

stances. It must meet flammability standards and the parts and decorations must be securely fastened.

Manufacturers get a certificate of registration from the state after they meet the standards and pay a fee. The registration number must be shown on the toy.

Prevent chronic inflammation with a healthy diet Dear Doctor K: You’ve written that chronic inflammation has been linked to diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Is there anything I can do to fight inflammation without using medications?

Dear Reader: Inflammation in the body is a double-edged sword.

Short-lived inflammation, directed by your immune system at invaders like bacteria or viruses, protects your health.

But sometimes inflammation persists, even when there is no health threat. That’s when it can become your enemy. Many major diseases have been linked to chronic (ongoing) inflammation, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression and Alzheimer’s.

The good news is that powerful tools to combat inflammation can be found in the grocery store. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. He explained that components of many common foods have anti-inflammatory effects.

By choosing the right foods, you may be able to reduce your risk of illness. Consistently pick the wrong foods, however, and you might speed up the inflammatory disease process.

The same foods that contribute to inflammation are already

They also contribute to weight gain, which is itself a risk factor for inflammation. How does that happen? When you put on weight, the fat cells in your body become more numerous and also grow larger.

We used to think that what fat did was provide a storehouse of energy for when we needed it, sort of like insulation that protected us against the cold. In the past 20 years we’ve learned that fat cells are little factories that make hormones and immune system chemicals. These substances influence our appetite, our metabolism – and inflammation.

To reduce inflammation, avoid or limit: • Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries; • Fried foods such as french fries; • Soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages; • Red meat (burgers, steaks); • Processed meat (hot dogs, cold cuts);

• Margarine, shortening and lard.

On the flip side are foods and beverages that reduce the risk of inflammation and chronic disease. Fruits and vegetables are particularly effective. Good choices are blueberries, apples and leafy greens, which are high in natural antioxidants and polyphenols. These are protective compounds found in plants. Nuts and coffee may also be protective.

Include plenty of these anti-inflammatory foods in your diet: • Tomatoes • Olive oil • Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale and collards • Nuts, such as almonds and walnuts • Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines • Fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, apples, cherries and oranges • Spices, particularly ginger and turmeric If you’re looking for a dietary plan that closely follows the tenets of anti-inflammatory eating, consider the Mediterranean diet.

This diet is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and healthy oils.

Quit job and play basketball Dr. Wallace: I’m a good athlete, and this year I should be a starter on my high school basketball team. Last year, I was considered the sixth man. My problem is that I have a good job as a waiter (I’m 18) in a nice restaurant and I make decent money.

My coach told me that I will have to quit my job as soon as basketball practice starts. I’d like to play basketball, but I know I’ll never be good enough to play college ball. With that in mind, I was considering giving up basketball and keeping my job. I get decent grades and I do plan on attending college.

Talk to your employer and explain that you enjoy working at the restaurant and ask if you can return to your job after the basketball season ends.

When a certain teacher gives a test she leaves the room. The entire school takes tests on the honor system. I can honestly tell you the honor system doesn’t work here. As soon as the teacher leaves the room, out come the “cheat” sheets. Some students are so brazen they even open the textbook looking for the correct answers.

I have thought about telling our principal, but I can’t get the courage to do it. In fact, my parents advised me to do my very best and to ignore the cheaters who are

Dear Nameless: Students cheat for a number of reasons.

Parental pressure to get good grades is the main one. Many cheaters are intelligent, but figure, “Why study when I can cheat and still make good grades?” In some families, cheating is normal. Many students have observed their parents cheating on their income tax returns.

Teens witness a parent misuse company funds, while others watch parents steal company supplies because, “The company won’t miss them, and besides, I should be making more money for the good job I do for the company.”

The teens who observe their parents cheat think it’s OK – as long as they don’t get caught.

But cheating is still morally wrong. Honesty is always the best policy, thus you will be the winner in the long run!

Dr. Wallace: In sports, how important is winning? – Todd, Ames, Iowa Dear Todd: The object of competitive sports is to win. That means winning is important.

However, teamwork, fair play, and discipline are equally important.

However, computers are useless unless programmed.

And although many, many man-hours have been put into writing bridge-playing programs, they still cannot compete with humans.

As an example, look at the West hand in the diagram. What would you lead against four hearts after the given auction?

North-South were using twoover-one game-forcing. South decided to overbid slightly, forcing to game with his two-heart bid.

Instead, he might have responded three hearts, which would have shown at least six hearts and been game-invitational. North would presumably have passed that out.

Against four hearts, surely every human would have led the diamond king. Now, it is true that if declarer ducks that trick, West must shift to his heart king to defeat the contract for sure. But that is not an impossible play to find if West trusts his partner’s discouraging signal at trick one.

(If West continues diamonds, South wins with his ace, ruffs his third diamond in the dummy, and leads the spade king to ruff out East’s ace. Then declarer can play two rounds of trumps, ruff West’s diamond exit, cross to dummy with a club, and discard his two club losers on the queen and jack of spades.)

At the table, the computer program sitting West led the spade 10! That is incomprehensible.

Now South easily made his game.
