1 dead after crash near Elburn KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com VIRGIL TOWNSHIP – One person died Sunday following a twocar accident west of Elburn along Route 38, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The names of those involved were being withheld Sunday afternoon as authorities worked to notify next of kin.

Initial investigation showed a 2012 Ford Focus traveling east on

Route 38 west of Meredith Road crossed the center line for an unknown reason at about 12:30 p.m., striking a 2007 BMW SUV traveling west, police said.

The driver – and sole occupant – of the Ford was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, police said, noting his injuries do not appear to be life threatening. The passenger was taken by ambulance to

Delnor Hospital in Geneva with nonlife threatening injuries, police said.

Route 38 between Meredith and Watson roads was closed for about four hours while authorities investigated the crash, police said.

Kane County sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are conducting the investigation.

No tickets have been issued, police said.

Haines students, parents enjoy 5K race

CHARLES – Haines Middle School sixth-grade student Emma Schnulle munched on an orange slice Saturday to try to regain some of the energy she expended a few minutes earlier running in the school’s Halloween 5K. “I think the hardest part was keeping my energy up,” the 11-yearold said.

Emma was one of more than 500 Haines students and parents who participated in the race. This was the first time the school had hosted a 5K event.

Her father, Ray Schnulle, was happy to see her participate.

“Something like this gets the kids outside,” he said. “And running is a lot of fun.”

The large turnout delighted organizers.

“This was more than we imagined we would have,” said Haines physical education teacher Samantha Trimarco-Bugger. “We are so happy with the community support and family support we received to put on the event.”

Students had been training for the event for the past eight weeks, learning such things as how to pace yourself when running as well as

injury prevention.

“We’re trying to teach them lifelong fitness activities and how to stay in shape,” Trimarco-Bugger said.

Beth Haden and her son, Haines eighth-grade student Ty Haden, decided to participate at the last minute.

“This is my first 5K,” she said.

“I wanted to encourage my son and give it a shot. The hardest part was trying to keep up with him.”

Ty said he had some doubts whether he could finish the race until he saw his math teacher, who was also participating in the event.

“She kept me going,” he said.

ST. CHARLES – Jeff Bagnasco isn’t a big fan of charity, so he had two conditions when a longtime friend wanted to host a benefit auction in his honor.

One, he said, he would help collect the items for the event.

Two, the former Lily Lake resident said, attendees would be asked to bring a nonperishable item for Lazarus House in St. Charles.

“So at least if this flops, I know I helped others,” Bagnasco said Sunday afternoon during the benefit at Beehive Tavern and Grille in downtown St. Charles.

Bagnasco, 38, was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in March, he said, noting chronic digestive issues led to the disease.

Although the Sycamore resident is too stubborn to let the illness affect him – he appeared in good spirits Sunday – his diagnosis has taken a hit to his pocketbook, he said, explaining he hasn’t been able to work since late April.

His first surgery led to complications, he said, and he didn’t start chemotherapy until August. He said another

surgery is scheduled for December.

“Money is tight,” Bagnasco said.

Enter Kyle Reed, an auctioneer who has known Bagnasco since kindergarten.

Sunday, Reed auctioned off dozens of items – such as baked goods, beauty products, toys and gift certificates to local businesses – to help raise money for his friend’s medical bills.

“A lot of places were really willing to give, which was nice,” Bagnasco said of the number of items donated to the event.

Other friends, such as Jenny Weech, pitched in to help.

Weech, who sold raffle tickets, said her husband, Erik, has been friends with Bagnasco since high school.

“Anything we can do to help,” Weech said.

She described Bagnasco as giving. He is the first person to stop what he’s doing to help someone in need, the person that can be counted on to help a stranded friend, she said.

Bagnasco said it’s likely he’ll be able to beat the cancer. Sunday, he – along with many others – wore a black shirt with this message: “Be like Jeff: Tell colon cancer where it can stick it.”

BATAVIA – Batavia High School sophomore Adam Degaetano was as surprised as anyone seeing his pumpkin continue to roll down Houston Street after it left his hands moments earlier.

“I didn’t think it would go that far,” he said. “I thought it would hit a curb and smash.”

Pumpkin rolling was just one of the activities held in downtown Batavia on Saturday as part of Batavia MainStreet’s annual BatFest event. Boy Scout Troop 6 hosted the popular pumpkin roll event.

BatFest gave the Fricot family of Batavia the chance to show off their Halloween costumes. Annie Fricot was dressed as the “X-Men” character Storm, while her husband, Marquette, came as the White Rabbit from “Alice in Wonderland.”

In addition, their son, Draven, 4, was dressed as the “X-Men” character Wolverine, and their 1-year-old daughter, Jade, was playing the role of Alice.

“We love Halloween,” Annie Fricot said. “We decorate our house every year. This event helps to extend the holiday.”

The family just moved to Batavia in March, and is not fully acquainted with the city yet.

“This is a great way to get familiar with the downtown,” she said.

“It was a lot of fun carving them,” he said. “I just took a mirror and made stupid faces and then tried to mimic the facial expressions.”

Area teams find out playoff draws

By JAY SCHWAB and KEVIN DRULEY Shaw Media The Batavia football team gathered at the school Saturday night for a community playoff party, a gathering that grew all the rowdier when the Bulldogs received what many would consider great news.

The televised announcement of the state playoff pairings revealed that – after much speculation – Batavia was the largest school in the IHSA’s Class 6A state playoffs draw, rather than landing in Class 7A. It might be a small sample size, but a much-circulated fact this past week is Batavia having reached the state semifinals in 6A in 2011 while falling in the first round in 7A last year.

Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron thinks Batavia (8-1) is strong enough to fare well in either class, but he still loved the sight of his team’s reaction to the announcement that the Bulldogs will host DeKalb (5-4) in the first round of the 6A playoffs next week.

“It was awesome,” Piron said of the party. “Awesome. Very fun, and our kids got a nice, big surprise. When they heard it was 6A, it was a big cheer, but they cheer whatever. They see the name, and then they said ‘Batavia, it looks like maybe one of the teams to beat here,’ and the kids got excited about that guy, whoever he was, so it was fun.”

Piron thought the Bulldogs coaches might be able to solve the 6A/7A riddle by early Saturday based on Friday night’s statewide results, but he said that turned out to be wishful thinking.

“In the end it was just looking more and more like it was Class 7A, so when it was announced, we were kind of surprised, to be honest with you,” Piron said. “Our super math geniuses didn’t figure it out like I thought, but we’re playing an old conference foe, DeKalb, and that should be cool.”

The Bulldogs and Barbs were Western Sun Conference brethren before going their separate ways in 2010. DeKalb needed a Week 9 win against Rochelle, 46-41, to become playoff-eligible at 5-4.

Like Batavia, Geneva – winners of six straight – is hot heading into the playoffs. Coach Rob Wicinski was delighted that the Vikings (7-2) earned a home game against St. Patrick (6-3) in Class 7A. In 2011, Geneva also was 7-2 and drew a nasty, first-round road game at Lake Zurich.

Wicinski said “I’m really happy for the players” regarding starting the playoffs at Burgess Field, and said he’s known the St. Patrick coach – Dan Galante – for many years, through a mutual friend.

It was thought that St. Charles East would join Geneva in 7A but the Saints and Oswego tied as the smallest schools in Class 8A, the state’s largest enrollment bracket.

East (6-3) will visit the north suburbs to face Stevenson (7-2) in the first round.

There was much discussion on Comcast’s playoff pairings show about how cutthroat the northern half of the 5A draw is, and Kaneland (8-1) is squarely in the midst of that minefield. After beginning with a first-round home game against Hampshire (6-3), Joliet Catholic (second round) and four-time defending state champion Montini and Marian Central (quarterfinals) are among the name-brand programs the Knights could encounter before long.

St. Francis (5-4) also is in the 5A draw, having played its way in with a Week 9 win against St. Edward. The Spartans will make a short trip to unbeaten Glenbard South in Round 1. The Raiders had an undefeated regular season for the first time in program history but play in a considerably less grueling conference than St. Francis; all six Suburban Christian Conference Blue teams made the playoffs.

“I feel it’s a good draw for us,” Spartans coach Greg Purnell said. “It’s close. Those kids know each other, and we’ve never played each other.”

Marmion (7-2) earned a No. 5 seed in the upper part of the 6A bracket, and will host 6-3 Fenton, which finishes as runners-up to Glenbard South in the Metro Suburban Conference. While Ca-

dets coach Dan Thorpe and his staff’s prognostications had the team playing Prairie Ridge in the opening round, Marmion scouts still have seen the Bison in recent weeks.

Fourteen Marmion scout crews scattered the region down the stretch of the regular season after the Cadets clinched a playoff berth with a Week 6 win against St. Francis.

“That’s one duty of being in the playoffs earlier than coming down to the last week,” Thorpe said. “Once we beat St. Francis, we knew we were in so we could start preparing. I’m blessed with a tremendous staff and some wonderful fathers, so we’ve been scouting anybody and everybody.”

SCC Gold member Aurora Central Catholic received a No. 10 seed in 4A. The 6-3 Chargers will visit 7-2 King in the first round.

In Week 2, ACC defeated King’s Chicago Public League counterpart Bogan, 42-7, at Lane Stadium.

“It’s a good opportunity. We don’t know much about them, but obviously the fact that they’re 7-2, it’ll be a good test for us,” Chargers coach Brian Casey said. “Unfortunately we’re in the spot where there’s no test. It’s pass or fail right now. But we’re excited about the opportunity to be one of the teams competing for a state championship … and we like the fact that we have a chance.”

A 3A entrant last season, ACC is making its second successive postseason appearance after snapping a 15year postseason drought in 2012.

Winners Aurora Central Catholic. Whenever you draw a CPL team in the football playoffs, it’s generally a good thing.

Now every so often a Chicago team rises up and proves the exception to the rule, but Sly will play those percentages, thank you very much.

Batavia. There is a major difference between 6A and 7A, and Batavia was the last school in 6A. ’Nuff said.

The Barbs aren’t going to be much of a threat in the first round, and whoever awaits in Round 2 will be in deep trouble against B-Town, as well. The Bulldogs deserve to be thought of as one of the state favorites in 6A. Geneva. Getting a first-round home game is a nice luxury for a 7-2 team. St. Patrick is a pretty tough first-round opponent (just ask Joliet Catholic), but Geneva has a fighting chance and got a fair draw. Potential Round 2 foe Schaumburg also wouldn’t be unbeatable.

Marmion. That late-season loss to ACC didn’t hurt Marmion’s seeding as bad as you’d have though. Sly loves Marmion’s chances in its first-round home game against Fenton, then you roll the dice in a potential second-round game vs. Lakes (soft schedule) or Prairie Ridge (dangerous, but down from recent past).

St. Francis. If you’re a 5-4 team and you know you’re going against a 9-0 team, Glenbard South is the matchup you want.

The Raiders are having a great season and won’t be easy to beat, but Glenbard South has played a very, very weak schedule and will be feeling the pressure of avoiding a Round 1 upset to a local foe.

Losers Aurora Christian. Aurora Christian’s chances have more to do with getting healthy than whoever the opponent was going to be (IC Catholic), but in the past, the Eagles have benefited from playing out-ofthe-area teams who are wide-eyed by the Eagles’ wide-open style of play.

Not so this year.

Kaneland. Hampshire in the opener is fine, but for a team of Kaneland’s caliber to have to play a beast like Joliet Catholic just to make it out of Round 2 (on the road, no less) is a tough deal, probably the worst shake of any of the local teams. Knights are capable of rising above it, though.

St. Charles East. Round 1 opponent Stevenson has been on a rampage after starting out 0-2. St. Charles East in Class 8A, Schaumburg in 7A? Something just seems off about that.

Bergren moved from his usual outside linebacker spot to defensive end Saturday as the North Stars sought to beef up their pass rush. Bergren notched a big sack on third down to force a punt early in the fourth quarter.

“Jordan took it in stride,” Pomazak said of the position switch. “He’s a smart, heady football player, and obviously, he was the player of the game for us on defense.”

Bergren’s defensive touchdown was North’s lone TD in the first half, after which North led, 7-6. But North’s ground game-driven offense perked up in the second half, including a 17-yard touchdown pass from senior Erik Miller to tight end Garrett Johnson for one of only four North completions on the day. Kat Stutesman’s point after made it 27-13 with 5:14 to play in the fourth quarter.

Mostly, it was a steady dose of senior running back Evan Kurtz, who broke a 53-yard TD run on an inside handoff in the final seconds of the third quarter. Kurtz (31 carries, 162 yards), who has battled shoulder problems this season, carried the load before exiting the game in the fourth quarter.

Pomazak was gratified to see North’s plus-sized offen-

sive line seemingly wear down South Elgin in the second half.

“When you have 280 pounds, 260 pounds, 250 pounds, constantly beating on you for four quarters, that’s what the game plan is,” Pomazak said. “Eventually a little crack turns into a big hole, and then all the sudden, you go. We know that’s part of our M.O., and we’re not going to get away from it.”

North won the turnover battle, 3-1, with senior Nick Drawant grabbing an interception to supplement Bergren’s fumble recoveries. The win followed last week’s North victory at Larkin, giving the North Stars consecutive wins for the first time this season.

South Elgin donned camouflage jerseys for the season finale, which coach Pat Pistorio said was partially a nod to volunteer coach Nate VanMetre, who Pistorio said is heading off to duty with the Marines soon.

“That’s something that from the Arena League, that’s something we’ve come in contact with throughout the years is the camouflage jerseys,” said Pistorio, who like Pomazak is in his first season as a high school head coach. “Throughout the year I kind of dangled it in front of the kids to see if they were interested in it, and this final game I surprised them here prior to the game. We did a little jersey switch.”

SOUTH ELGIN – The St. Charles North football team figured out how to win a close game too late to save the North Stars’ playoff hopes.

The North Stars held off South Elgin on Saturday, 27-25, in their season finale, finding out a little more than an hour later that they were among a minority of 5-4 teams statewide to miss the playoffs based on too few playoff points.

Still, first-year North coach Rob Pomazak called the program’s first winning season since 2009 – also North’s last year in the playoffs – a “stepping stone.”

“We talk about controlling the controllables, and winning this football game was a controllable,” Pomazak said.

North started its season by dropping two overtime games in its first three weeks, and yet another OT game became a distinct possibility when South Elgin (3-6) scored a touchdown on quarterback Rob Cuda’s fourth TD pass of the afternoon with 1:16 to play in the fourth quarter, drawing within 27-25.

But on the ensuing twopoint conversion attempt, Cuda, rolling to his left, didn’t find an open receiver to his liking, and made a dash for the end zone. He was stopped just short by North’s defense, initially by junior cornerback Tyler Bell.

“He tried to jump up, and I grabbed his leg, then one of the other players came over to [help stop him],” Bell said.

Although the Storm’s passing game had its moments – junior Nick Menken hauled in three TD grabs – the late twopoint stop was among a handful of marquee plays by North’s defense.

Junior Jordan Bergren was in the middle of several of them. He had two fumble recoveries on the day, including one for a touchdown on a bad South Elgin snap from the Storm’s own 4-yard line.

Bridge can be a strange game at times. Usually, you are happy to have lots of honors, but occasionally you would find a contract much easier if it weren’t for an unnecessary high card. Do not resist the idea that an honor may be extraneous.

How should South plan the play?

South starts with four potential losers: one heart, one diamond and two clubs. He has nine winners; six spades, one heart, one diamond and one club.

So it seems as if the diamond finesse had better be winning.

In theory, this is a 50-50 shot, but surely you know that finesses never work on Mondays! And if the diamond finesse is failing, is there any other way to make the contract?

How about trying to establish dummy’s diamond suit? As long as the suit is splitting 3-3 or 4-2 (or 5-1 with a singleton king) and trumps are not 4-0, an extra diamond winner can be established.

South should take the first or second club, play a trump to his king, cash the diamond ace, and continue with the diamond queen.

Suppose West takes that trick, cashes two club winners and shifts to a heart.

Declarer wins on the board, ruffs a diamond high in his hand, leads a trump to dummy’s jack, ruffs another diamond high, returns to dummy with a spade and cashes the diamond eight – bingo.

The probability for this line is approximately 78 percent – much better than a finesse. And without the superfluous diamond queen in his hand, South would have seen this line immediately.
