ST. CHARLES – The city’s leaf pickup program is set to begin today for residents east of the Fox River, according to a St. Charles news release.

In the release, Public Works Manager Andrew Reinking stated the program is funded by a portion of the fee collected on eligible homeowners’ utility bills.

“Check your utility bill or call Utility Billing at 630-3774426 if you have a question regarding your eligibility for this program,” he stated in the release.

Like the brush pickup program, the release stated, the leaf collection areas are divided by the Fox River.

In addition to Tuesday, collection dates for the east side are Nov. 6 and 18. Collection dates for the west side are Nov. 2, 12 and 23, according to the release.

The release indicated pickup is not available to the following neighborhoods because they have homeowners associations that run their maintenance programs: Cumberland Green, Whittington Course, Royal Fox private streets, Dunham Place Commons, Delnor Townhomes, Delnor Glen

Leaves must be on the parkway by 6:30 a.m. on the designated pickup day, but it might take three to four days before the leaves are collected in a specific area, the release stated.

The city provided these leaf collection tips: • Do not obstruct leaf piles by parked vehicles or other obstacles.

• Keep about 10 feet between leaf piles and such permanent structures as fire hydrants, trees and street-

light poles.

• Rake leaves in a row parallel to the street at least a foot back from the curb and off the sidewalk.

• The pickup schedule could be altered by inclement weather or a large volume of leaves.

• Pushing leaves into the street violates city ordinance punishable by a fine up to $500 for each offense.

• Avoid raking foreign materials into leaf piles, as such objects could damage equipment or injure personnel.

What’s abuzz in Batavia business

There are so many exciting Batavia business happenings right now, it’s hard to decide what to write about. So, let’s take a quick journey together through the highlights of what is abuzz in Batavia business: • Houston Street update: Sidewalk is being poured, and final touches are being completed. Local businesses that have been hurt by this road closure should see relief by the end of October. Please make a special effort to visit the local businesses in that corridor.

• Walgreen’s (current and new): With the new Walgreen’s just outside my office window, and fresh news about a prospect for the current Walgreen’s location, this has been on the top of my mind for several weeks. Blue Goose just announced it is eyeing a second location in the current Walgreen’s location, but – as always – I reserve my excitement until I cut the ribbon at the grand opening. As for the new Walgreen’s, fingers crossed for an open date soon

after Valentine’s Day. • Golden Corral: After several years of anticipation, calling Batavia home was short lived for this franchise.

I understand the closing was not because of lack of business. So, maybe another franchisee will swoop in and occupy this space.

• Hardee’s: A quick departure during the overnight hours left us all in the lurch.

Not sure what will be successful in that location, but some variety would be great. I have reached out to a couple of my favorite ethnic restaurants, asking whether they want to open another location in Batavia. I will wait for the return calls. What do you think will be successful in that location?

• River Street (extended): Lots of space between Pal Joey’s and the Boat Club. Who has a great idea about what to

do with that riverfront property? Mixed use? Apartments over retail? We could use some affordable housing in Batavia. It also would fit well in the streetscape format.

• Avenue Chevy: I have heard everything from upscale grocery to hotel. I vote hotel because hotel tax is a great source of additional revenue to the city, and there are no hotels in Batavia.

Although, I do love that we have a couple right along our borders.

• Former location of O’Sole Mio: Exciting buzz about plans for the owners of Pal Joey’s to open a martini/wine bar in this location. The owner of Pal Joey’s is one of the nicest people on the planet, and I wish him much success in this new venture.

• Salt Creek BBQ: No real movement there. Some of the parking was taken by the new car wash at the corner gas station, but it still is a viable restaurant location with a drive-thru.

Entrepreneurial education program to start KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Emerging business owners who are eager to grow their business have the opportunity to do so through participation in ScaleUp Aurora, a 12-week entrepreneurial education program starting Nov. 3 in Aurora.

ScaleUp Aurora is presented free-of-charge by the Women’s Business Development Center, a Chicago-based organization whose mission is to create jobs and fuel economic growth. Both men and women are eligible to participate in the program.

Initially launched in fall 2014, the program is open to business owners throughout the Chicago area who meet specific criteria. Applicants must generate annual rev-

enues between $150,000 and $750,000, have been in business for a minimum of two years and have at least two employees, not including themselves (1099 employees qualify).

Funded by the Small Business Administration, the program offers individual business counseling sessions, workshops, CEO round tables and opportunities to make connections that can lead to contracts.

“The ScaleUp program has provided immediate benefit to me,” said recent graduate Luisa Buehler of The Hire Solution Staffing Agency in a news release. “ ... My ideas on how to grow my business, which were generated and nurtured through 12 years of business ownership, have been energized and reevaluated to the

point of exciting. Success will follow this program.”

Participants will gain practical skills they can put into action, including a business and strategic growth plan with customized action items to scale up their businesses.

In addition, the WBDC will guide business owners on becoming more bankable, as well as help to provide direct lending opportunities to qualified participants.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – At the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School, Batavia seventh-grade student Kailey Light has been able to watch how caterpillars turn into butterflies.

“I really enjoy that there are more hands-on activities here,” said Light, one of 50 Batavia School District 101 students enrolled at the STEM Partnership School. “I was very excited about coming here.”

John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School is based at Aurora University in Aurora. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

The school serves students in third through eighth grades in the East Aurora, Indian Prairie, West Aurora and Batavia school districts.

Batavia students started attending the school this fall after the Batavia School Board voted to join the school.

John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School Director Arin Carter said STEM education is all about integrating different subjects and applying them to real-world problems.

“Students work in collaborative groups to answer those real-world problems with hands-on discovery,” she said. “Everything in the building is mobile. Kids don’t just sit at their desks and get lectured to. We want them to collaborate and learn how to work together.”

That collaboration goes beyond their peer groups, Carter said.

“We have third-grade students collaborating with college students,” she said. “The idea is to build that comfort level.”

STEM school fourth-grade teacher Elizabeth McAlpin, who had taught at Rotolo Mid-

dle School in Batavia before coming to the STEM Partnership School, is a firm believer in STEM education and how it can be used to get kids more excited about learning.

She pointed to a recent discussion about the atom as an

example.

“We can integrate math, we can talk about the history of it, we’ve done nonfiction reading, so all of those subjects are integrated,” McAlpin said. “The kids are certainly excited about what

they are learning, and when they are excited about it, I think it is easier for them to learn different topics.”

Students then talk about what they have learned in a weekly newsletter that is sent home to their parents.

Fourth-grade student Mason Hendricks, of Batavia, said he is looking forward to learning about electricity. He said he is enjoying his experience at the school.

“Once you meet the teachers, it’s fun,” he said. “It has awesome technology.”

Carter said she sees the school continuing to evolve to meet the students’ needs.

“We really want to make sure that our curriculum doesn’t become stagnant, but that we evolve with our students,” she said.

Geneva aldermen Monday voted, 9-1, to advance the ordinance to the Geneva City Council for a vote.

Fourth Ward alderman Jim Radecki voted against the measure.

The ordinance makes clear air rifles only can be discharged on someone’s property or with the property owner’s express consent if the air rifles expel a single BB, pellet or globular projectile less than 0.18 inches in diameter; has a maximum muzzle velocity not exceeding 700 feet a second; are discharged in a way that does not endanger people or property; and prevents the projectiles from passing outside the boundary limits where the rifles are being used.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns asked Weisman be considered out of order after Weisman implied city staff had a specific agenda for getting the ordinance passed.

Geneva resident Kurt Koenig said the city was becoming more restrictive than the state on air rifles, but Second Ward Alderman Don Cummings disagreed with him.

“I think [the ordinance]

The Geneva City Council is expected to vote on the ordinance at its next meeting Nov. 2.

Under the proposed ordinances, loaded air rifles are not permitted in public streets and areas within the city, but they may be transported if they are not loaded and in some type of carrying case.

If traveling by motor vehicle, an unloaded air rifle must be in one of the following conditions: broken down in a nonfunctioning state, not immediately accessible or enclosed in a case, according to the ordinance.

GENEVA – Pace will seek public input on its balanced 2016 budget in Geneva this week. A public hearing is set from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Kane County Government Center auditorium.

“We encourage people to participate in the public hearing process, as it’s an opportunity to learn more about how we’re funded, our operations, and our plans for the future,” Pace Board Chairman Richard Kwasneski stated in a news release.

According to a brochure about the budget, Pace plans to spend $228 million on suburban services in 2016, and Pace Suburban Service ridership is estimated to grow by 1.6 percent to 34 million passengers.

The proposed budget includes a 25-cent fare increase for bus customers paying in cash, bumping the adult fare to $2, according to the release. The reduced rate would increase from 85 cents to $1, effective Jan. 1.

This would bring Pace in line with similar policies at the Illinois Tollway and CTA and would encourage the use of Ventra in order to mitigate the costs associated with collecting and handling cash, the release stated.

Ventra fares would remain flat at $1.75 for adults and 85 cents for the reduced rate.

The proposed budget also includes $6.6 million for new route services launched in 2015 and $1 million of new service for Interstate 90 in late 2016, according to a brochure.

“We are excited about the expansion of services contained in the budget and what that means for the mobility of our customers, especially as the economy improves and demand increases for work-related travel,” Kwasneski stated in

Born: Sept. 21, 1921; in Hinckley, IL Died: Oct. 25, 2015; in Elburn, IL Lawrence J. Martin, age 94, of Elburn, passed away peacefully on Oct. 25, 2015, at home with his family.

Born in Hinckley, Illinois on Sept.

21, 1921, he moved to Elburn with his family in 1922. His father, “Red” Martin, owned the barber shop on Main Street and ran a pool hall.

After graduating from Elburn High School, Lawrence worked at a defense factory until 1941, when he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in December of that year. Lawrence served our country during Would War II as a Technical Seargent (E-7) with the 18th Weather Squadron, 8th Army Air Force in England.

Following the war, he completed his Bachelor’s degree at Northern Illinois Teacher’s College and received his Master’s of Science in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 1954 to 1956, he taught military dependent children in France, mostly in Paris.

With these exceptions, Lawrence has always had an address inside the city limits of Elburn.

Lawrence served on the Elburn Village board, was the City Treasurer for Mayor Arnold Erickson and Mayor Bud Wise, served as a Trustee of the Town and Country Public Library District 1989-1994 and 1999-2007, was awarded a Community Service Award for his humanitarian service as a resident historian for the Village of Elburn in 2000, and was an active member of Elburn Congregational Church.

He was the first graduate of Elburn High School to be named its principal. When Kaneland High School opened in 1959, Lawrence was the first Director of Athletics.

When then-Superintendent H.F. Landis asked Lawrence to help form

Kaneland’s Guidance Department, he returned to Northern Illinois University and earned a Master’s of Education in Counseling and was the Director of Guidance 1961-1981, when he retired.

In retirement, Lawrence and his wife, Beatrice (nee Paulson, of Dorchester, Wisconsin), whom he married in 1958, enjoyed traveling and their wonderful life together as husband and wife, as parents, and as Papa and Granny. He was an avid reader his entire life who took great pleasure in sharing his love of books and learning with everyone he loved, and will always be remembered as a “sweet and gentle man”.

Lawrence is predeceased by his father, Claude (“Red”); mother, Ethel (nee Eastabrook); and brothers, Russell, Clifford, and Wilbur.

He is survived by his wife, Bea; daughter, Sarah Jane (Mick) Brown of Wadsworth, Ohio; son, Jay Lawrence (Wendy) Martin of Byron, Illinois; granddaughters, Caroline Ashley Brown of Denver and Bailey Beatrice Martin of Salem, Virginia; and grandsons, Nathaniel Emerson Brown of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Kirk Patrick Martin and Donald Paulson Martin of Byron, Illinois. We love him and will miss him.

Visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at Elburn Community Congregational Church, on the corner of Rt. 47 and Shannon St., in Elburn. Rev. Dr. Walter Thyng, pastor of the church, will officiate with private family interment to follow at a later date.

Together they enjoyed the parties Linda would throw, family picnics and time with his grandparents. Joe loved to play little league baseball and had some all star moments that were his claim to fame. Joe was a sports enthusiast. He played golf and was a great bowler.

Beyond anything, Joe was a die hard Cubs and Bears fan from a young age.

Joe had an incredible work ethic and found his passion of plumbing in 1999 when he joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 501. He loved being a plumber. He cared for the safety of the environment and took his role as a plumber to heart.

Joe and his best friend often said “I heart plumbing.” Local 501 merged with Local 130 and Joe had his sights on becoming more involved with the union Joe met his future in 2006 at the bowling alley when he caught the eye of Miranda. They were smitten and a true love story began. Joe proposed to Miranda in the Dominican Republic wearing a Cubs jersey and proud as can be. They were married at St. Partrick’s Church in 2008. A reception at the Plumbers

and Pipefitters Union Hall was perfect for them. Their love story continued and they welcomed their sons Gianni (6), Gabriele (4) and Vincenzo (17mths) into the world.

Joe would tell everyone that we had the outfield and our family was complete. He was right. Joe was the best daddy a kid could ask for.

He would do anything for his family.

Joe was a go getter and was constantly busy. He loved to be on the move but also loved to be at home with his family and working in the garage. He was always organizing his tools. He loved to teach his boys how to use tools. He taught his boys to always protect their mama. Just like he was taught.

Joe loves music and his boys have carried that tradition on. Joe really loved vacation and always looked forward to spending time on a beach with his family.

Joe was the best of the best. His kindness and compassion will live on forever through the hearts of his 3 little boys.

Joe was received into heaven by his Nana and Grandpa (Frances and Leonard) and his Gram and Grandpa (Frieda (Merendino) and William Muller).

Until they meet again, Joe has left his wife, Miranda; and their three children, Gianni, Gabriele and Vincenzo; his parents, Len and

Linda Middona; his brother and sister in law, Anthony and LeeAnne Middona and their children, Ethan, Evan, Nathan, Aaron and Aidan; his Mother and Father in law, Donna and Roger Ronzheimer; his brother in law and nephew, Brooks and Brendan Ronzheimer; and countless family and friends who Joe has touched in so many ways.

He will be missed everyday.

BATAVIA – A nerd, Supergirl and Scooby Doo walked the streets of downtown Batavia on Saturday morning, collecting their loot.

After getting more from a business along Wilson Street, the trio – portrayed by sisters Lola and Hazel Kolaya and their cousin Lenny Baranowski, respectively – showed off their candy.

“They’ve made out pretty good,” said the girls’ father, Jay Kolaya of Batavia.

The 8-, 4- and 5-year-olds were among hundreds of other children donning a costume for BatFest, the city’s annual Halloween-themed, family event.

The Batavia MainStreet festival featured dancing, games,

looked more like a lion because of a wig that gave him a mane.

Attending BatFest is tradition, Hagemann said, noting it is great to see so many people downtown. The corner of River and Wilson streets particularly was busy, as Gaetano’s was not just handing treats to kids, but also to adults, who got a cup of hot cider.

Nearby, 16-year-old Julia Den Uyl stood under the Pal Joey’s awning awaiting the trick-or-treaters with a bowlful of Butterfinger and Crunch bars. She instructed those who approached to take only one piece.

“It was up to here before,” the Pal Joey’s employee said, indicating how much candy she had gone through in the event’s first half-hour.

“There’s two more bags inside.”

Republicans sneer at ‘free stuff’ but also give it away

By PAULA DWYER Bloomberg News Let’s talk about “free stuff.” Republican presidential candidates are against it. They accuse Democrats of bribing voters with it. And when they debate taxes, deficits, debt and other economic policy matters Wednesday in Boulder, Colorado, they’re likely to bring it up.

Free stuff is the more polite way to disparage the “moocher class,” identified in the 2012 campaign as those who rely on food stamps, unemployment benefits, Obamacare and other safety-net programs.

At a South Carolina event last month, Jeb Bush said he’d attract black voters, although not by telling them to “get in line and we’ll take

care of you with free stuff.”

Two weeks later, Marco Rubio critiqued the first Democratic presidential debate as a contest over “who was going to give away the most free stuff.” He listed the ways: “free college education, free college education for people illegally in this country, free health care, free everything.”

Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley and to a lesser extent Hillary Clinton indeed are pumping out one proposal after another aimed at helping those with lower incomes obtain better housing, health care and higher education without taking on huge debt burdens. No doubt, they’re competing to attract Democratic votes. Sanders’s proposal for government-run

health care alone would cost $15 trillion over a decade, by one calculation.

That’s a lot of free stuff.

But Republican candidates are offering piles of free goodies for their constituents, too. It’s just that they call them “tax cuts.”

Even while claiming they want to reduce the U.S.’s $18 trillion national debt pile, they’re in a surreal competition to offer more tax breaks, as Howard Gleckman of the Tax Policy Center explains.

Six candidates – Bush, Rubio, Rand Paul, Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal and Donald Trump – propose an average of $6.5 trillion in new cuts over 10 years.

In past elections, Republicans sought to make their tax plans revenue-neutral, meaning that tax cuts were

offset dollar-for-dollar with tax increases or spending cuts to avoid adding to the deficit. This year, they make no pretense of budget neutrality. The candidates’ tax cuts, according to the Tax Foundation, would add an average of $633 billion to the deficit each year.

That’s more than the fiscal 2015 deficit of $439 billion (an eight-year low).

The tax code already is a fount of giveaways that has the same bottom-line effect as, say, increased Medicaid spending. The collection of exemptions, credits and deductions known as tax expenditures are functionally equivalent to direct spending. They’re also bigger than social-welfare spending.

In fiscal 2015, the grand total of all this tax spend-

ing came to $1.4 trillion, of which $1.3 trillion benefited individuals and the rest went to corporations. In a $3.8 trillion federal budget, that’s a hefty dose of free stuff.

Who benefits? In 2013, the Congressional Budget Office looked at the top 10 tax breaks by dollar value and calculated that more than half of the tax expenditures went to taxpayers in the top20-percent income bracket.

Seventeen percent went to the top 1 percent. Households in the bottom one-fifth of the income scale got 8 percent.

So keep this in mind when the Republican candidates boast about their tax cuts: If a subsidized Obamacare plan or help with college loans deserves the label “free stuff,” then so does a tax cut.

To the Editor: Lately, we have been inundated with stories in the news media concerning how our various taxing bodies, charities, businesses and others have been grappling with a myriad of budget issues, such as – which program/service should be retained or cut, fully funded or not, retained as is or modified, etc.?

There is no doubt these are tough decisions. Perhaps a look into past writings may prove to be helpful.

William of Ockham (Occam), a 14th century English scholastic philosopher and Franciscan friar, is widely credited with writing “Occam’s Razor,” which simply states: “Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily.”

Many savvy individuals have been regularly applying Occam’s Razor to their everyday decision-making process with successful results. Accordingly, it just might be beneficial for decision-makers, who previously were unfamiliar with Occam’s Razor, to start using this simple, methodological principle now, as well as in the future, when faced with making difficult budget decisions.

Batavia falls in 4A regional play-in, still proud of season, growth

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – When the Batavia girls volleyball team looks back at its 2015 season, there is much more that meets the eye than its final record.

Seven seniors saw their high school careers come to an end as Batavia fell to Plainfield North, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, on Monday in an IHSA Class 4A Plainfield North Regional play-in game.

After winning the first set, the No. 18-seeded Bulldogs (14-22) had a tough time keeping Northwestern-bound Allie Lindroth and No. 13 seed Plainfield North off the attack.

Lindroth, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter, finished the match with 19 kills.

“Their setter was really good at faking our block, so a lot of the time they were hitting one on one,” Batavia senior outside hitter Sydney Cavanaugh said. “I think we adjusted well, but they were hitting over some of the shorter girls at the net, so it was definitely tough there.”

Cavanaugh had five of her six kills in the third set, but most of Batavia’s offense came from Maddy Astling (12 kills) and freshman Sam Juarez’s career-high 10 kills.

Sure, it was tough to see their senior seasons come to an end, and have a record finish eight games below .500, but Batavia is proud of the way it played in the past three weeks, especially with how the season started.

“It’s been incredible,” libero Katelynn Fegan said.

“I would not define this season by wins and losses.

We’ve come so far from the beginning and improved so much since Day 1. As us always being the underdog and having teams look past us, that drove us in every single match we played.”

Many of the losses the Bulldogs faced were against top programs around the area, and the long-time coach knows her team was stronger because of it and built character, regardless of how the season ended.

“I’m just so proud of this group that I can’t even begin to explain what they have ac-

complished together,” Trippi-Payne said. “From Day 1, how we started, to come this far and play the way we’ve been playing these last few weeks, it’s a testament to these girls. Our schedule was very, very difficult and it made us that much better.

Whether we beat those teams, or lost to those teams, you could see the way we’ve been playing that those matches made us better.”

Astling, who had six of her 12 kills in the first set, expected Monday night’s match to be one of momentum swings.

Joining Fegan in her third year at the varsity level, Astling knows how her experience and playing some of the teams they played helped. “[Trippi-Payne] does that on purpose,” Astling said of the tough schedule. “It really helped us get better as a team. In matches like tonight, we’ve been there before, and even though it’s tough for everything to come to an end, we stuck together through everything this year

and that’s something to be proud of.”

It’s tough to say good-bye to a team that bonded so much throughout the season, and one Cavanaugh said was really “a group of best friends.”

But just because the Bulldogs fell short of a potential regional semifinal match against Tri-Cities rival Geneva tonight, the Bulldogs did everything they could to turn those tears into smiles before leaving Plainfield North on Monday night.

Trippi-Payne knows it’s going to be tough to replace the likes of Cavanaugh, Astling and Fegan, among others, but as time heals the pain of Monday night’s loss, she knows that this season can be celebrated as a success.

“The way these girls fought every single time we were out there, regardless of who we played, I love them,” Trippi-Payne said. “They put their hearts out there for this program and I can’t thank them enough.”

Batavia and coach Dennis Piron feel about as well as a team could heading into the playoffs. With wins over Geneva and Streamwood to clinch their fifth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title, the Bulldogs, led by quarterback Kyle Niemiec and receiver Canaan Coffey, along with defensive coordinator Matt Holm’s gritty group on the other side of the ball, are as confident as they could have hoped as the postseason arrives.

“We feel very, very good about where we are right now,” Piron said. “But as far as these postseason seeds and matchups go, you really don’t know anything anymore. We can watch film and prepare, but they don’t know what our

8-1 means, and we don’t know what their 5-4 means. We’re mainly excited as a group that we’re in the playoffs and that we’re hosting the first game.”

Pekin, part of the Mid-Illini Conference, sneaked into the playoffs with a 21-20 Week 9 win over Bartonville Limestone.

All four teams the Dragons lost to this year are in the postseason, including a No. 1 Class 5A seed in Washington.

GENEVA

As expected, Geneva

doesn’t have a whole lot of early intel about its opening opponent, Oswego East, which is in the playoffs for the second time in the school’s 11 seasons.

But it didn’t matter who the Vikings drew. Quarterback Sean Chambers and Geneva know they’re going to be ready to go once Friday night arrives.

“I think everyone is pretty excited just to be part of the playoffs,” Chambers said. “No matter who our draw was, we know what it takes to win once the playoffs come. You always want to go 9-0 and beat a team like Batavia, but I think losing a game got us all a little angry. A little adversity always helps, and I think we want to prove ourselves, and winning these games at this time of the year is really all that matters.”

Chambers will take center stage against Oswego East, of the Southwest Prairie Conference. The Vikings will be without top receiving target Jack Wassel, who will not play because of team disciplinary reasons. Oswego East won its final three games of the season, but two of which came

against struggling Plainfield Central (0-9) and Romeoville (1-8).

“Our town loves football and our football team loves our town,” Chambers said. “We’re looking forward to putting on a show for our community.”

ST. CHARLES NORTH

“If these losses needed to happen for future successes, then that’s what we want.”

That was North coach Rob Pomazak said after back-toback losses to Geneva and Batavia in the middle of the season, making a statement that has panned out. The North Stars have won four straight games, each by at least three touchdowns to wrap up a 7-2 regular season. Since allowing 40-plus points in each of its two losses, North has allowed 23 points in the final four games of the season.

Benet competed in the East Suburban Catholic Conference against the likes of perennial powers Joliet Catholic, which the Redwings beat, 24-21, in Week 8, and Nazareth, which shut out Benet, 33-0, in Week 6.

Surging into the Class 6A playoffs on a three-game winning streak, the Kaneland football team enters its first postseason since 2013 in high gear.

The Knights and 255 other schools statewide learned of their playoff destinations Saturday night, and although Kaneland faces a potentially daunting matchup with familiar foe Montini in the second round, players’ focus remains on their opener against visiting Belvidere North.

The Knights (6-3) have playoff history with Belvidere North, too, but the team is just giddy to be preparing for a Week 10 after a rare miss last fall.

“Last year, it was kind of upsetting, and we felt like we let down the coaches a little bit, let down each other,” senior quarterback Jake Marczuk said. “But we bounced back this year, for sure, and we believed we were a playoff-potential team, and that’s what we proved.”

Marczuk, the latest in an athletic line of Knights’ spread quarterbacks, remembers

sitting in the middle school section at Peterson Field as a youngster and watching the likes of Joe Camiliere and Drew David. He and the rest of the seniors wanted to channel that postseason success in their prep swan songs.

Class 7A entrants Batavia (8-1), Geneva (8-1) and St. Charles North (7-2) also are in high spirits as the postseason looms.

Geneva individuals shine at XC regionals ST. CHARLES – On a day when every step was an adventure, Geneva cross country runners McKenzie Altmayer and Tyler Dau reigned supreme.

The two Geneva athletes took home top individual honors in the girls and boys races, respectively, at Saturday’s soggy IHSA Class McKenzie 3A St. Charles Altmayer North Regional Leroy Oaks Forest Preserve.

Batavia captured the girls team title in impressive fashion, with all five of its point scorers finishing in the top 10, boosting the Bulldogs into next weekend’s West Aurora Sectional. St. Charles East captured the boys title with four of its point scorers in the top 10.

Geneva, North and East will join the Bulldogs girls at sectionals.

Marmion, Geneva, North and Batavia also are sectional-bound on the boys side.

Finishing with mud splatters up the backs of their legs and mud caking their shoes, runners appreciated finishing on their feet, even if their

times were slower than expected becauase of the sloppy course.

“It was my slowest time all year,” said Dau, who completed the three-mile layout in 16:14, three seconds ahead of his nearest competition.

“But it was slow for everyone.

There were a lot of runners who fell during the race.”

In the girls race, Kaneland finished fifth to advance to sectionals.

Seniors Brianna Bower (third, 18:57) and Noelle Espino (ninth, 19:37) paced the Knights.

At Elburn Woods Forest Preserve, Kaneland narrowed an 83-point gap between itself and Crystal Lake Central to just one.

The Knights finished far behind the Tigers in their own invitational last month. The teams found themselves in the same field at the same Elburn Woods Forest Preserve course over the weekend, and the Knights responded.

Crystal Lake Central finished with 72 points to Kaneland’s 73. Bring on another duel when the teams meet again at this weekend’s Woodstock North Sectional at Emricson Park.

“For us to come into regionals [Saturday] and have this performance and lose to them by just one point, it’s an incredible on our part to close that gap,” Knights senior Austin Kintz said. “And we feel it’s quite the momentum booster.”

Royals, Mets have Cougars ties KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE KANSAS CITY, Mo. – St. Charles East alumnus Wayne Randazzo called Kane County Cougars baseball games for AM-1280 WBIG from 2012 to 2014, missing out on broadcasting Yordano Ventura’s starts by one season.

When the World Series opens at the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffmann Stadium at 7:07 p.m. today, the two will unite to connect the Fall Classic with the Class-A club based in Geneva.

Ventura, a 24-year-old Dominican right-hander, helped the Royals to their second successive American League pennant Friday, pitching 5⅓ innings in the clincher against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Randazzo, meanwhile, will have a well-rested voice for the Series opener. The preand post-game host for the Mets’ flagship statio, AM-710 WOR, hasn’t been on a call since Wednesday, when the Mets completed a four-game sweep of the Cubs in the National League Championship Series.

Ventura, who was born about three months after the Cougars began their inaugural season in Geneva in 1991, made 19 starts for the club in 2011, Kane County’s first season of a two-year player-development contract with the Royals. He went 4-6 with a 4.27 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 88⅓

Royals manager Ned Yost boasts indirect Cougars ties.

He was a catcher for the 1975 Wausau (Wisconsin) Mets, a Mets affiliate in the Midwest League, batting .192 in 79 games. The Wausau franchise, later aligned with the Baltimore Orioles and nicknamed the Timbers, relocated from Wisconsin to become the Cougars after the 1990 season.

A year before suiting up in Wausau, Yost played in Batavia – New York, that is. His minor league career began with the Batavia Trojans, a Mets affiliate in the Short-A New York-Penn League.

*** Q: Can I use boiled linseed oil on my woven oak splint baskets? My dad’s aunt made them in the early 1900s. Some of the splints are starting to dry out and crack. How can I keep them from splitting more?

A: Don’t use linseed oil or any other kind of oil, it can get sticky and will make the splints harder and darker. For routine care, dust the baskets with a feather duster or use the vacuum cleaner, but first wrap an old nylon stocking around the nozzle. You can clean the splints by blotting with a damp white cotton cloth. Let your baskets share the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The hot, moist air is good for the basket. Splint baskets benefit from a light shower or misting once or twice a year, but don’t soak the splint. Let the basket dry completely in a spot away from direct sunlight.

Some sources recommend soaking the baskets in cool water for 30 minutes, but that can cause the splints to warp. Keep baskets away from direct

sunlight, heating vents, the fireplace and any other heat sources that will dry out the splint. *** Q: What is a fore-edge book?

A: The fore edge of a book is the edge opposite the spine. In a foreedge book, the edges of the pages are painted or gilded to make a picture when the book is closed. Foreedge paintings may have been done as early as the 10th century. In the 17th century, artists began painting slightly inside the outside edge of the page so the picture was only visible when the pages were fanned out. Double fore-edge paintings also were done so two different pictures were visible depending on which way the pages were fanned. A lot of foreedge paintings found today are later additions to old books. Fore-edge books sell for a few hundred dollars or more. *** Tip: A monogram can be removed from an old piece of silver by a competent jeweler or silversmith. Jack-o’-lanterns, ghosts, witches and trick or treating are all part of Halloween. But how did it start?

There were similar celebrations dating back to ancient times but the modern holiday started about 1910.

There was a Halloween Carnival party and a king and queen were chosen in 1904. The Dennison Co. started selling costumes, crepe paper and instructions for Halloween decorations by 1910. About 1920 paper lanterns and paper pumpkins turned into jack-o’-lanterns became popular. The same type of stiff paper was used in Germany to make Halloween candy containers. The 1920s also saw the idea of trick or treating come into fashion. To get a treat of candy, the costumed visitors had to perform. Some of the 1930s jacko’-lanterns were made of celluloid.

And by the 1940s, hard plastic had arrived. Witches seem to have been added to the holiday by the 1930s and the black dress, pointed hat and flying broom were important. The green face was probably inspired by the wicked witch in “The Wizard of Oz” movie, but witches are getting nicer and better looking at today’s celebrations. Could that be because nice witches starred in TV shows like “Bewitched”? And trick or treat bags didn’t appear before about 1948.

Before that any plain paper bag or cloth sack was fine. Since 1900, toy makers have added to the holiday fun with games and toys using all the popular symbols. Save the trick-ortreat bags this year. They are becoming popular collectibles.

*** Q: I have a bentwood and leather chair with a metal label that reads “Sno-Shu.” What can you tell me about the company that made it?

A: “Sno-Shu” chairs were made by W.F. Tubbs Co., a snowshoe manufacturer in Norway, Maine. The chair seats and backs have rawhide webbing similar to the webbing in snowshoes. The company was in business from 1906 to 1939 and made snowshoes, dog sleds and chairs.

Tubbs sold his business in 1923.

American Fork and Hoe Co. was the owner in 1928. The company moved to Wellingford, Vermont in 1932 and continued to make Sno-Shu chairs for a few years. *** Q: I bought a Smith Corona “Classic 12” manual typewriter from the SCM factory in Groton, New York, in 1965. It came in the Trimline carrying case. I have the original booklet and warranty that came with it. I bought a new ribbon for it in 2004 and it’s still in excellent condition. What is the value?

A: Smith Corona was formed by the merger of two typewriter manufacturers, L.C. Smith & Brothers Typewriter Co. and Corona. The companies merged in 1926 and the name was changed to Smith Corona, Inc., in 1949. The Classic 12 was made in the 1960s. Smith Corona stopped making typewriters in 1998 but sold typewriters made in South Korea until 2009. The company is still in business, selling pressure sensitive labels and thermal transfer ribbons. Your typewriter could sell to someone who wants to use it. Value of your typewriter, about $30 to $50 for most, about $100 for mint in the case. Most are bought to use.

A large study put the icing on the cake. It showed statins reduced the risk of heart disease even in people with normal levels of LDL cholesterol – presumably by reducing inflammation.

So there were two different ways (anti-cholesterol and anti-inflammation) in which statins could lower the risk of heart disease.

Based on this new information, updated guidelines published in 2013 moved away from recommending statins just for people who have high blood levels of LDL cholesterol. Instead, the new guidelines recommended a statin for anyone between 40 and 75 years of age who has a 7.5 percent or higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years.

How do you calculate your risk? There are various systems, and those systems were developed from studies of different populations of patients.

All of the systems measure “risk factors” previous research has shown increase the chances of developing heart disease – or of having more heart trouble if you already have heart disease.

In tomorrow’s column, we’ll talk about the risk factors and the controversy over prescribing statins based on those factors – and not just on a person’s blood level of LDL cholesterol.

Plus, I’ll answer your question as to what I think about the new guidelines. Just don’t tell my colleagues here at Harvard what I said.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17, and live alone with my mother. My parents were divorced a year ago, and it was the best thing that could have happened in our life.

My dad was, to put it bluntly, a drunken bum. He physically and emotionally abused my mother when he had been drinking, and drinking was his favorite pastime. He was drunk most of his waking hours. He never hit me, but he never paid any attention to me. The only time he talked to me was when he told me to get him a beer out of the fridge.

Since my dad left our house, we have spent the year he’s been gone enjoying being a “family” even if there’s only two of us. My mom and I are close and our life is very calm.

A few weeks ago, my dad started calling my mom and taking her out to dinner. I told her I didn’t think she should go out with him, but she said they had to talk things over. They have gone to dinner several times and she tells me a little about their “dates.” She said he has changed and is trying to get his life organized, but I don’t want to hear about it. Today, when I got home from school, my mom told me Dad plans to come back home to live with us. He has apologized to her and is sorry for the way he has behaved. He also has joined Alcoholics Anonymous and is making good progress, and he wants to show us how he has

Dear Dr. K: My doctor put me on a statin in 2013 because the guidelines that came out that year said I should be on them.

Are the new guidelines really better than the ones they replaced?

Dear Reader: I’m sorry you asked that question, because any answer I give will be criticized by some of my colleagues on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. This is a very controversial area, and my colleagues all have strong opinions – just not the same one.

In fact, there’s an old joke: Our faculty are so knowledgeable, on any particular question, any three faculty are likely to have at least five completely different opinions – all strongly held and forcefully argued.

Not only is my answer going to be controversial, it also is going to be long.

There is so much to say, I will need two columns to say it.

Statins are medicines that were developed to lower blood levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol, or “bad” cholesterol).

Statins were based on basic research that discovered how the liver controls the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood. That research was honored with the Nobel Prize.

Subsequent studies proved statins reduce the risk of heart disease.

Most of us assumed this was because they lowered LDL cholesterol.

Guidelines were developed that said people with LDL cholesterol above a certain level should take statins.

However, additional research revealed it was not so simple. First, it was discovered inflammation inside plaques of atherosclerosis raised the risk of heart disease.

Then it was shown, in addition to lowering cholesterol, statins also

When a fit is found, both partners can include shortage points (or follow the guidelines of the Losing Trick Count). When North raises hearts, South can add one point for each doubleton, getting him up to 19 support (high-card plus shortage) points – enough for his jump to game. (Alternatively, his hand has only five losers: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and one club.

This is the number for a jump to game opposite a single raise.)

Should West overruff declarer?

With king-doubleton, yes; but what about king-third?

Now it primarily depends upon the second card in the suit. If it is relatively high – typically at least the eight – the defender should not overruff, in the hope that that card will be promoted as a winner.

In this deal, if West overruffs and, say, shifts to a spade, South wins that trick, draws trumps, and claims. But if West calmly discards, he will eventually take two trump tricks, with K-10-4 sitting behind A-J-8-7-2.

That seems to be easy, but as you know, bridge loves exceptions.
