Butera grocery store to close by Nov. 1

By CHARLES MENCHACA ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles location of a family-owned supermarket chain will close its doors by Nov. 1., the store’s manager said Saturday.

The Butera Market at 2732 E. Main St. has signs on its front doors announcing the closing without a specific date and with the message “Thank you for your past patronage.”

The store also reduced its hours on Oct. 22 and will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day until it closes for business.

BatFest attendance reaches 3K

“To have a 72-degree day, that’s amazing,” said Joi Cuartero, Batavia MainStreet executive director. “I’m going to say there were at least 3,000 people in the span of four hours.”

The Halloween-themed event is one of Batavia MainStreet’s free family events and features dancing, games, pumpkin carvings and trickor-treating.

At least a third of BatFest attendance was made up of children, many of whom wore costumes as they collected candy at more than 70 participating businesses. Griselda Delgado of First State Bank in Batavia gave out treats and had a beanbag toss on the Batavia Riverwalk. She was joined by her family, including sons Omar, 12, Jonathan, 10, and Gio, 4.

“I liked the arts and crafts table, and I liked the little [Riverwalk] playground,” said Jonathan, who wore a “Where’s Waldo?” costume complete with a striped shirt and glasses.

The Music Matters Fall Festival held its inaugural event Saturday in conjunction with BatFest. The festival had a petting zoo, bounce house, train rides, live music, and arts and crafts, Music Matters school director Jeff Matter said.

“It was a lot of fun, a huge success and we’re just glad everybody got to have a fun fall day,” Matter said.

ST. CHARLES – The public is invited to the grand re-opening of Hilton Garden Inn St. Charles, according to a news release from Hospitality Ventures Management Group.

A celebration to mark the completion of renovations of the hotel in St. Charles’ east side will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the hotel, 4070 E. Main St., St. Charles. The event will feature food, beverages, entertainment, photo booth, raffles, tours and more, according to the news

The Hilton Garden Inn now features upgrades to the property’s common areas, including the lobby and the guest reception area, the release said. LOCAL BRIEF Sugar Grove police seek car burglary victims SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove police want to know if your car has been burglarized.

According to a police department eAlert issued Saturday, midnight shift officers apprehended five car burglars in the area of Neil Road in Sugar Grove.

“We have the suspects; we have several items that they stole from vehicles. Now we need to know which vehicles have been burglarized,” the alert states.

Those missing items should make a police report. Victims can call 911 to have an officer dispatched to their residence.

The event raised about $30,000 for Marklund’s programs and services in its first year. This year’s event – which had an even bigger turnout of more than 700 people – was expected to raise more than $40,000, Fonger said.

“It’s huge,” he said.

For 21-year-old certified nursing assistant Sinai Chapa and her two coworkers, participating in the event was a way to support – and represent – the children they work with at Marklund, she said.

“We love the kids at the children’s home,” Chapa said. “We wish they could be with us.”

For others – such as Caitlin Cassiey, 10, and other members of Girl Scout Troop 4908 – the race was a way to help others and to work toward a badge.

The girls, whose troop is based out of Fabyan Elementary School, assembled green goody bags for the event, among other tasks.

CHARLES – The St. Charles Park District has received a $130,400 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to create and install a multifaceted, interactive group of exhibits highlighting the diverse aspects of the geological history of the land at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center and St. Charles area, according to a news release.

An expansion of its current display, the new exhibit will incorporate both indoor and outdoor activities, according to Pam Otto, manager of Nature Programs and Interpretive Services, the release stated. Both interior and exterior installations will include displays featuring videos and

animation, and utilize custom software to illustrate how glacial processes created the area’s topography.

The indoor interpretive video display and outdoor interpretive kiosk will create a vital link between a new “Excavation Station” activity center and Hickory Knolls’ glacial-themed interior exhibits, Otto said, according to the release.

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Not long after dawn on Sunday, hundreds of people gathered at Marklund near Geneva for the nonprofit organization’s second annual Run, Walk and Roll 5K/1-mile event.

As participants lined up at the starting line, Marklund president and CEO Gil Fonger wished for the runners to set a personal record but also encouraged them to like the organization on Facebook.

While focused on physical activity, the event is a way to raise awareness about Marklund, Fonger said after the participants set off on the course that wound through the Mill Creek subdivision in Blackberry Township.

Fonger said that what Marklund does can be boiled down to making everyday life possible for people with profound disabilities.

Sunday’s event is one of several – including a winter blacktie function, a spring golf outing and a fall pancake breakfast – that support Marklund.

Marklund serves 117 fulltime clients a year, he said, and state funding falls about $16,000 short of what is needed per person, per year. That

Batavia, climbing up in class from last season’s landmark run through the IHSA football playoffs, opens its bid for a second straight state title against defending Class 7A champion Mt. Carmel in a first-round, 7A game.

Bulldog Stadium has hosted some big games before, but the one coming to town at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday certainly could rank near the top.

“You’re looking at a team that plays in one of the best conferences in the country [Chicago Catholic Blue] with a longstanding history of great success not only in the playoffs, but for winning state championships.

That’s what they do there at Mt. Carmel,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said.

“If we’re going to go 7A, we might as well play someone like that, you know. … We’re thrilled with the quality of the opponent and the game that we’re about to have.”

Batavia (8-1) clinched its fourth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title Friday. Two of its casualties during a 7-0 run through conference play, Geneva (8-1) and St. Charles North (7-2), join the Bulldogs in 7A. Geneva’s first-round foe, Hersey (6-3), routed North’s first round foe, Rolling Meadows (72), 48-6 on Friday night. The Vikings open the playoffs at home, while the North Stars begin on the road.

Apart from living in the north suburbs when he coached Niles North “in the day,” Wicinski admits little knowledge of or experience with Hersey. This time of year, that’s the way he likes it.

“We really don’t have too many connections with Hersey, but it’s cool,” Wicinski said.

“The playoffs are about playing somebody different and somebody out of the area, so it’s nice to have somebody different who’s out of the area.”

No. 9 seed North’s first-round game at No. 8 Rolling Meadows pits North coach Rob Pomazak against his alma mater. But

Pomazak, a class of 1996 Rolling Meadows graduate, said the novelty of facing the Mustangs has expired after many matchups against them when he coached at Elk Grove.

Pomazak suggested Rolling Meadows’ season-ending blowout loss likely was “an anomaly” for the Mustangs.

“I think they’re a very good football team,” said Pomazak, who said he guessed Rolling Meadows might be North’s opponent in the wee hours Saturday morning once it appeared Rolling Meadows would bump up to 7A from 6A. “I know coach Matt Mishler does a very good job. Their offense is going to be very dynamic, and we have our hands full. We really relish our opportunity here.”

Marmion (6-3) will visit DeKalb (8-1) in Class 6A, meaning the Cadets will try to wrangle Illinois-bound running back Dre Brown on the Barbs’ turf field. Cadets coach Dan Thorpe’s first inclination is the Cadets must keep Brown and Co. off the field as much as possible to pull the upset.

“I’m sure if you’re going 8-1, people have tried to focus on stopping Dre Brown, so I assume the other players have stepped up,” Thorpe said. “You go 8-1, you have a nice team, so I’m sure there are some other skilled kids and linemen. I don’t know if they’re big or small or what but we’ll find out in the film exchange that we do with them.”

Based on the Friday results in hand, he figured the Rockets weren’t in strong enough position to host a firstround game after clinching a playoff spot against the winless Royal Lions.

By the time the 5A draw was announced around 9 p.m. Saturday, the brackets dispelled Crabel’s initial suspicions. The seventh-seeded Rockets are hosting 10th-seeded Sterling, a fellow 6-3 team.

“That’s awesome. We’re very happy about the opportunity to play at home,” Crabel said.

“You can figure all you want going into today, but until you see it, you don’t know.”

Piron expressed some surprise at the Bulldogs’ placement in the southern part of the 7A bracket, saying he thought initially the draw might be split into quadrants.

With Geneva heading to the north bracket, Fabyan Parkway served as the de facto Mason-Dixon line. If Batavia defeats Mt. Carmel, which won

its final three games to become playoff-eligible after a 2-4 start, the Bulldogs could travel to Belleville West in the second round.

The Maroons travel to Bradley-Bourbonnais in the first round. IHSA officials’ policies weren’t for Piron to figure out.

“Who knows why they do what they do,” he said. “I mean, we’ll never know. It’s a very unusual process with so many variables and so little predictably.

But that’s what makes it fun.”

Well, in some circles, anyway.

Wheaton Academy tied Aurora Christian for the 256th and final berth in the eight-class field.

Although both former Suburban Christian Conference rivals had 39 playoff points – the total of opponents’ victories – the Eagles earned the edge via tiebreaker.

They played more playoff qualifiers, 4-3.

Aurora Christian (5-4) travels to defending 2A champion Sterling Newman (9-0) in the first round in 3A. Wheaton Academy ends its season with a 5-4 record, one of 22 teams with that distinction statewide.

“It’s pretty devastating,” Warriors coach Brad Thornton said. “You’ve got a whole range of emotions going through you.

You’re frustrated and you feel awful for your players, especially your seniors, who their goal all along had been to make the playoffs. ... I really felt the work they put in this season was enough, and I really thought they deserved the chance to play

in the playoffs.”

Seeking its first postseason berth since 2009, Wheaton Academy rolled to a 4-0 start that included three shutouts, but didn’t become playoff-eligible until a 24-14 win against Fenton in Week 8.

“To be the first team out just stinks,” Thornton said. “It hurts. … But No. 1, we didn’t get our sixth win, so it’s really no one’s fault but our own for not guaranteeing a spot.”

In Class 4A, Aurora Central Catholic (6-3), which defeated Wheaton Academy on Friday night in Metro Suburban West play, drew Johnsburg (8-1), a team that visited ACC for a summer 7-on-7.

The Chargers are in the playoffs for the third straight year under coach Brian Casey but are searching for their first postseason win during that span. This time, at least, ACC is heading in with momentum after Friday’s playoff-clinching win at Wheaton Academy.

“This is the first time we’ve gone in on a high,” said Casey, who said he expects the game at Johnsburg to be at 1 p.m. Saturday. “When you finish the year with Montini the last couple years, you get beat up a little bit mentally and you certainly get beat up physically. This is the first time we’ve gone in playing well and we’ll have a chance to [make the momentum] continue forward.”

ELK GROVE VILLAGE – A sense of finality swept through the St. Charles North boys soccer team late Saturday afternoon.

North’s 4-2 loss to Rolling Meadows in the Class 3A Elk Grove Regional title match prompted tears from some players. The sight of the Mustangs embracing and hoisting the championship plaque hardly made things better.

“We all care about each other so much. It’s been like a family,” North senior forward Christopher Watson said. “We win together, lose together.

No one wanted to lose. No one wanted to let go as seniors.

That’s what made us keep going.”

Trailing for much of the match, North (11-6-4) rallied to slice the Mustangs’ twogoal halftime lead in half on Alex Amro’s tally with 35:21 remaining in regulation.

As was often the case, however, Rolling Meadows (11-72) possessed an answer. And a quick one at that. Mustangs senior forward David Zarate scored his second goal of the match less than three minutes later.

With 1:55 to play, North drew to within one goal once more on a close strike from David Gorniak. Moments later, the Mustangs sealed the game when Kou Glaser gathered a long free kick from Rolling Meadows’ side of the field and touched the ball past North goalkeeper Zachary Norton.

Glaser also scored twice, helping Rolling Meadows advance to Tuesday’s opening Bartlett Sectional semifinal against West Chicago.

“We came out with energy right from the start,” Glaser said. “Once we put pressure on them, we were feeling good.”

At the bridge table, when on defense, you need to be both an actress – or actor, of course – and an audience. You take the lead role to steer partner’s defense, then you sit back and watch her – or him – execute the lethal line.

In this example deal, how should the defense proceed against one no-trump after West leads the spade ace?

West might make a penalty double of one no-trump. If his partner has a few of the outstanding high cards, the contract will probably go down. And if partner is weak, he might be able to run to a long suit. The bad scenario is when East has a weak, balanced hand. Then one no-trump doubled will probably come home, perhaps with an overtrick.

At trick one, East must signal with the 10, high to encourage.

First, let’s suppose that West cashes his spade king and plays another spade. East will win with his queen and cash the nine, but what will he do next?

Given his hand and the dummy, he is likely to shift to the diamond jack. Then, though, South will take the next seven tricks with two diamonds and five clubs. How does East know that he needs to switch to a heart?

He doesn’t – but West does.

Before leading the second or third spade, West should cash the heart king (remember, lead king from ace-king and king-queen after trick one). Then East will know to return a heart and the defenders will take the first seven tricks for down one.
