Chronicle wins 18 journalism awards The annual Northern Illinois Newspaper Association awards banquet took place Thursday night in DeKalb.

Eighteen awards were won by the Kane County Chronicle, including five first-place awards.

The Chronicle also won four second-place awards for best headline writing, best video, best online photo gallery and best feature photo.

In addition, the paper won nine third-place awards for best news story series, best tech/medical reporting, best general feature, best in-depth news story, best sports story, best website, best sports photo, best education reporting and best business/financial/ consumer reporting.

Last year, the Chronicle won 15 NINA awards, including four first-place awards.

Kane, Campton, South Elgin, awarded $400K Money will go toward free planning services from regional planning agency Under the grant program, known as local technical assistance, CMAP will dispatch its planners to partner with planners in those local governments to help them complete their projects.

Among the local projects, Campton Hills will receive assistance on its work to revise its zoning ordinance, and South Elgin will receive help in drafting a new ordinance to govern development in its community.

Gilberts and Pingree Grove also will receive assistance with their comprehensive plans.

Kane County, however, will

be able to use its award to help teach new skills to other planners, both at CMAP and in a local municipality.

Recently, Kane County received a grant from the Pew Charitable Trust to train staff at the county’s Development Department to learn how to perform health impact assessments.

Essentially, the HIAs could be used to determine how a particular development project or policy might either improve or harm the health of people living near the project or within the county.

Mark VanKerkhoff, Kane County’s director of develop-

ment, said the county used the HIA process to evaluate new policies being developed pertaining to encouraging the production of local fruits and vegetables in the county.

He said the work caught the eye of CMAP, who wanted to partner with the county on a similar assessment project to learn how to do the assessments itself.

The county now is seeking a development project or policy change under consideration by a municipality within Kane County on which to perform the HIA. “We think this is a great opportunity,” VanKerkhoff said.

This week, Kane County announced it and the local municipalities, including Campton Hills and South Elgin, had been selected by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, or CMAP, to receive the in-kind services grant.

bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The shovels worked in tandem, each scooping out the sod, then the topsoil, sticky clay and heavy rocks, to create a 24-by-24inch grave to hold a 19-inch casket.

Digging graves by hand is something that still happens under some circumstances.

Full-sized graves are dug by backhoe, but those for cremations and infant burials are dug by hand, said Fred Dornback, the Blackberry Township cemetery superintendent and sexton, as he and groundskeeper Curtis Lubic carefully dug neat corners with square-edged shovels.

They used probes first to measure out the depth and width before they started.

“The typical grave sites are 36 inches across with a concrete vault that gives us three-quarters of an inch on either side to be exact,” Dornback said as they worked on a recent afternoon.

Vaults probably began as a way for cemeteries to make money, Dornback said, but they also served a practical purpose for the ease of maintenance.

“A wooden casket would disintegrate and collapse in the ground,” Dornback said.

“A vault prevented the land from collapsing.”

An older burial site nearby without a vault requires yearly additions of soil to keep the plot level with the rest of the burials, Lubic said. In winter, they use a pickax when the ground is frozen, he said.

The Blackberry cemetery was founded Jan. 25, 1860, as an initiative of Odd Fellow Lodge 222 in Elburn, Dornback said.

The township took over July 1, 2007, overseeing the maintenance of the 2,800 people buried there.

An old stone building dated 1890 was used as a morgue, storing remains from winter until spring when the ground was soft enough for burial, Dornback said.

The laborer would be responsible for filling the grave after the burial.

When they need a full-sized grave, the cemetery contracts with Weiland Excavating for the work, he said.

Most cemeteries do con-

tract with excavating companies for that service, such as Mark Christopherson of Professional Cemetery Services, who digs graves for the Geneva cemeteries.

Christopherson said it takes about two hours to dig a grave with a backhoe, and sometimes he has lots of rocks to maneuver through.

“I had one the other day that had giant boulders,” Christopherson said. “What would they have done with a shovel?”

Christopherson said he puts plywood down to protect the turf from damage. In most cases, he will put a pile of dirt next to the grave and then fill it once the burial occurs.

“If I know in advance that it’s going to be a huge funeral, I will haul the dirt out and then haul it back in,” Christopherson said. “I will leave a pile of dirt next to the grave, so the mourners can drop a handful of dirt back into the grave at the ceremony.”

And so it will be with the burial for the small grave Dornback and Lubic are digging, as they will have a small amount of dirt for the family to drop into the grave.

“Some families want to put a shovelful of dirt or flowers or other things in,” Dornback said, and he said they try to accommodate those wishes.

A short distance away, a new plot is laid out with bright orange markers. Dornback said the grave is marked to be dug for a man in hospice.

“I mark spaces available with cones, and the families come in on their own time to choose,” Dornback said.

Dornback pointed out other grave sites where couples are buried.

It is tradition, he said, for husbands to be buried on the left side and wives on the right side.

It also is a religious tradition for a burial in an eastwest direction to have the head be to the west.

“That means on Resurrection Day, when the casket opens, they can look east to the rising sun,” Dornback said. “When we bury people north and south, the head is to the south so they will face east and the rising sun.”

Family asks why gravestone was destroyed

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Shawn Murphy would like whoever is responsible for the destruction of the monument gravestone for his cousin – Quincee Miller – to come forward and explain what happened.

A large headstone stood at Garfield Cemetery in Campton Hills, in tribute to Quincee, a Batavia resident who was 15 years old when she took her own life Oct. 20, 2010.

Sometime soon after the three-year anniversary of her death, which was Sunday, the monument appeared to have been run over, and Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman has said it appears either to have been an intentional or reckless act.

Quincee had been bullied before her death, and family members since have become active in the fight against bullying and teen suicide.

Murphy said he believes whoever is responsible for the monument’s destruction is familiar with the details of Quincee’s ordeal.

“My personal feeling is that whoever did this, they know the situation,” Murphy said. “I have that feeling. It’s a gut feeling.”

tery found the monument destroyed.

A large portion of it was resting against a fence, having been knocked off its base.

Another portion sat near where tire marks could be seen.

Hoffman on Friday said there were no new details, and the investigation was continuing.

An independent fundraising effort to replace the monument has far exceeded its original goal.

Haleigh Nesbitt, a friend of Quincee’s, launched the effort at www.gofundme.com/, listing a goal of $2,000.

By Friday afternoon, the total raised was at $2,911, and the goal was raised to $5,000.

Murphy said family members were grateful for Nesbitt’s effort, but stressed that they did not ask for it to be done.

Murphy said it isn’t known how much it would cost to replace the monument, and he’s unsure whether the existing

monument can be fixed.

The monument had been in place for only a few months before the incident, he said.

Nesbitt, 19, who now lives in Georgia, said she just wanted to help, and she has been surprised at the support.

She said she thought she might be able to bring a $500 check to family members when she visits in November.

“I didn’t expect it to happen in this amount,” Nesbitt said, adding that as far as expressing how she felt about it, “I don’t even know where to begin.”

Nesbitt said she, too, wants to know what happened.

“If it was an accident, if they were drunk driving … if they did a three-point turn and got scared and drove over it, no one is going to be mad,” she said. “If it’s on purpose, then explain why. No one deserves to, after they already passed and were bullied, no one deserves to be even more bullied.”

Tommy Lencioni (pictured) and Tom Maloney made great memories growing up in Kane County. Lencioni passed away Wednesday. when he said it was good to see you and asked how you were doing. During those years it seemed everyone knew him, and he knew every person in town.

One winter’s day, we had a great snow storm, the playing and packing kind. All the kids were outside, and we decided to build snow forts in the empty lot across from Tommy’s house and have a snowball fight. After a day of building, the fight was scheduled for the next day.

I thought I would be really smart and make snowballs for

the next day.

Well, everything froze over night and the snowballs were frozen rock hard. Tommy was behind the fort wall across the yard. We were all having a good old time, laughing, heaving snowballs, just a group of young kids having a ball. I let loose with one of my special frozen weapons, and – when I did – Tommy’s little head popped up from behind the wall. I think my breathing stopped as I wanted the snowball to do also. It smacked him right in the face, and he instantly fell over and hit the

ground.

I rushed over as everyone did. It had shattered his glasses. His mother, Arlene, rushed him off to the hospital, and I slowly walked home a block away, helplessly sobbing for what I had done.

Tommy of all people. I felt just rotten.

A few hours later, Arlene called and said he was home and to come on over. We sat at their kitchen table.

I was still so upset, apologizing repeatedly. Arlene said we were lucky – he had shattered glass in one eye that the doctor removed, and there was no permanent damage.

Today is a sad day for some current and former residents of Geneva, for we have lost our Little Buddy – Tommy Lencioni. I use the title “Little Buddy” with all my love and respect, because that is what Tommy was to us that knew him.

Tommy was a lifelong resident of Geneva and a member of the LPA – or Little People Of America. He passed away Wednesday.

I first met him when I was 12 years old, when I moved into his neighborhood. Their home was an oasis for all kids growing up throughout grade school and high school. We were always welcome at his home. Tommy was always included in games or anything we were involved in. He was just like every other kid; he wanted to be part of things and to be liked.

Tommy was genuine. He really meant it from the heart

lucky for he could have lost his sight in that eye. I was still apologizing and offering to pay for new glasses. Arlene said that is was not necessary; it was an accident and everything is OK. Then, Tommy – smiling at me – says, “Maloney, you know what I am going to do?

I’m going to make some snowballs, put them in the freezer and when you are walking by the house in July, I’m going to come out and get you buddy!”

He gave me that friendly smile and laugh I will always remember him for.

I lived and learned a great lesson from Tommy that day.

How terribly bad it feels when you hurt someone, even if it was unintentional. Yet, what a glorious relief it is to your heart and soul when someone forgives you. I will never forget that day, and Tommy didn’t either. We have both laughed about it together several times 50 years later.

Tommy, my Little Buddy, I am going to miss you dearly but I will never forget you or what you taught me. I am so glad I knew you and we were neighbors and good friends.

Geneva library board gets glimpse at vision for future

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Public Library District board members Thursday got their first look at library director Matt Teske’s Vision for the 21st Century.

Teske said the board instructed him to put together his idea of what the library should look like and what kinds of services it should be offering to meet all patrons’ needs.

In his outlined vision, Teske advocated for a more open entryway, more meeting space and an improved teen area.

He said the entryway needs improvement because it’s a high-traffic area that contains the circulation department, and patrons have to decide immediately whether they want to go upstairs or downstairs.

“It can get very crowded.

It’s not a very welcoming environment for people,” he said.

He said the teen area also is lacking when it comes to space. In his presentation, Teske said library staff members have a good relationship with teens who are interested in helping design a space just for them.

He said he’d like to see enough space for a teen book collection, interactive stations and a separate gaming area where they wouldn’t disturb other patrons.

Teske said the library also is lacking in meeting space.

“That’s a big one,” he said.

“We have one meeting room that’s used by the library for board meetings, the Friends of the Library, book sales and it’s available to the public.”

The presentation also highlighted the need for more space for the Friends of the Library group to use. Teske said the group does a lot of organizing, sorting and moving to prepare for book sales.

The group raises about $15,000 a year to help fund occasional equipment purchases for the library and helps to fund the winter reading prizes for youth and adult services. He said the group now has to compete for space in the library’s only meeting room.

Teske said the library may conduct a survey to help steer the process.

He said the plan will help identify services they should be providing, and board members will have to determine whether it’s possible to accomplish those goals in the current library space or find a new building.

“This is kind of a kickoff to see what our process wants to be,” he said. “There’s no real timeline in place. We just started thinking about this more deliberately.”

In other business, board members voted to hold a public hearing on the library’s proposed tax levy increase, which Teske said would total $4,600,031.

The public hearing is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at the library, 127 James St., Geneva.

LYLE ‘SWISH’ JOHNSON Born: Aug. 18, 1935; in Aurora Died: Oct. 11, 2013 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Lyle “Swish” Johnson, 78, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Elburn, passed away Oct. 11, 2013, surrounded by the love and care of his family.

He was born Aug. 18, 1935, in Aurora, the son of Gladys Johnson Scalet. Lyle grew up in the Fox Valley and graduated from Batavia High School with the class of 1953.

Lyle played baseball for Rajah’s Colts from 1951 to 1954. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960.

On Feb. 23, 1963, he was united in marriage to Barbara Breese; they happily celebrated their

50th anniversary earlier this year.

They made their home in Wasco, St. Charles and Elburn for a number of years before moving to Largo, Fla., in 2002.

Lyle worked as a bartender for a number of years at Denny’s Den, Wasco Inn and Ruby’s Half Moon. Until 1968, he worked on dairy farms in Batavia, Sycamore and Wasco.

From 1968 to 1975, he was employed at the St. Charles Youth Center, then went to work at Hines Lumber Company, St. Charles, in 1977, where he remained for the next 21 years.

Lyle was employed by Conte Excavating after retiring from Hines, until he and Barb moved to Largo, Fla. He was a member of the Teamsters Local #330, and in the earlier years he coached Wasco Little League baseball.

A true, blue Cowboys fan, Lyle also was a die-hard Cub fan.

He loved a good game of poker, enjoyed golf, reading a good western, a trip to the boat, talking sports with the boys and having a beer with friends.

He will forever be missed and never forgotten.

Lyle is survived by his loving wife, Barb of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his children, Paul (Janis) Johnson, of New York, N.Y., Peggy (David) Stover, of Maple Park, Jeff (Steph) Johnson of Elgin, Dan Johnson of DeKalb, and Ed (Tammi) Johnson of Woodstock; seven grandchildren, Joe Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Lance Johnson, Shana Johnson, Gabe Curl, Zak Johnson and Ayden Johnson; two step-grandchildren, Tim (Susan) Stover and Paul (Alvina) Stover; one step-great-granddaughter, Cadence Stover; his sister, Ann (Bill) Boden of Friendship, Wis.; and his sisters-in-law, Marge Breese of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Kathy Carlson of Monticello, Minn.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a countryside of friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Gladys and Emil Scalet; his daughter-in-law, Kathy Johnson; his brother-in-law, Jerry Breese; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Helen Breese; and one niece, Lori Breese.

She was born in Bridgeport, Conn., the daughter of Leonard and Josephine Diasio. JoMarie was a 1965 graduate of West Aurora High School.

She is survived by her two beloved daughters, Jennifer (Brian) Doane and their son, Trevor, of St. Louis, Mo., and Stephanie Davis of Florida; one brother, Tony Diasio of Aurora; three stepsons, John (Jennifer) Dellis and their children, Gracie and Mason, of Aurora, Louis (Gloria) Dellis of Pennsylvania, and Nick Dellis of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Officials push for better court sound

He said, for instance, that the county had budgeted enough money for 103 autopsies this year. But Russell said he has already performed more than 140 autopsies, and expects yet more in the final weeks of the year.

He asked the County Board for about $88,000 more.

In years past, such requests were typically paid by the County Board. On Friday, however, the board and Lauzen demanded Russell and the others meet with the county’s “financial professionals” to determine the need and perhaps seek alternatives.

Following the meeting, Lauzen said it will be the policy going forward for all supplemental requests, and particularly ones he called “budget busters.”

The new requirement also comes amid continued rancor between Lauzen and Russell over the coroner’s budget for 2014. Russell asked the county to give him money for more deputy coroners and for more anticipated death investigations. Lauzen has balked at the requests.

“We’re going to ask you to justify it,” Lauzen said. “Are all these autopsies necessary?

Maybe they are. Are all these toxicology tests necessary?

Maybe they are.

“But now that he [Russell] has requested more money than what he was budgeted, it’s up to the board to decide what to spend.”

But those who run the county’s courtrooms agree with those whose job it is to observe courtroom operations that, in the 21st century, the ability to hear what a judge, a lawyer or a witness is saying should not depend on the natural abilities of vocal projection of the courtroom participants.

And with that in mind, the county’s judges and court administrators have lent their voices to a push to dedicate money to improve the audio systems within the courtrooms at the Kane County Judicial Center.

“It’s a real concern for us, absolutely,” Kane County Court Administrator Doug Naughton said. “We agree

that everyone should be able to hear what is happening in their courtrooms.”

Concerns were most recently raised by members of the Fox Valley Court Watch, a group of volunteers that monitors and critiques courtroom activities on behalf of crime victims, and particularly victims of domestic violence.

Fred Dresser, a representative from the group, addressed the Kane County Board on Oct. 8.

He said he and others with the Fox Valley Court Watch are increasingly frustrated with poor audio quality in several county courtrooms, and particularly those in which domestic violence proceedings are typically held.

“The unfortunate fact is, you just can’t hear what’s going on,” Dresser said. “A judge will be speaking with attorneys in front of his bench, and it’s just inaudible to those sitting in the audience.

“That’s not fair, especially to the victims, and it’s not what court is about.”

He said he believed “a Campbell’s soup can and a string” could produce better audio quality than the current

system.

To reinforce his point, Dresser said Fox Valley Court Watch visited courthouses in several other counties and found Kane’s courtroom audio systems were decades behind.

“When the judicial center was built, these may have been state-of-the-art systems,” Dresser said. “But that was the 1990s – a long time ago.”

Naughton said the county is aware of the problem, and has solicited estimates to repair the issue. He said the county’s diagnostics have traced the problem back to substandard and obsolete circuit boards inside of the audio mixers.

“The problem is that the components break, and then we can’t find replacement parts,” Naughton said.

He said the county believes it would cost $5,000 to $6,000 a courtroom to upgrade the systems.

“The microphones, amplifiers and most other parts are fine,” Naughton said.

However, he said the county has not yet budgeted any funds for the work. And he said he does not know when or if it will.

GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell believes he needs more money this year to pay for the work his office already has conducted in 2013, including death investigations, autopsies and toxicology tests.

However, the Kane County Board, led by Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen, has asked him to again justify his request before they will sign off on increasing the money he can receive.

On Friday, the Kane County Board’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee opted not to act on the budget request from Russell, as well as other budget requests from the county’s judiciary and Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez, until the requests can be reviewed by the county’s chief financial officer and Auditor Terry Hunt.

The demand from the Kane County Board is unusual.

In the past, elected officials like Russell and Perez typically have worked with the County Board to craft an annual budget, and are then free, under state law, to run their offices generally as they see fit.

However, those officials can come to the County Board with what are known as supplemental budget requests – essentially, asking the board to pay for cost overruns or unexpected expenses.

This year, for instance, Perez submitted a supplemental budget request of $152,000 to pay for the cost of fuel, because the County Board, when it crafted the 2013 budget in late 2012, set the amount budgeted for fuel at $263,000 – almost $192,000 less than what the sheriff’s office had estimated it would need for fuel this year.

The new software platform

lets customers sign up for e-bill services, which will send an email alert indicating their bills are ready to be viewed online. Customers then can visit the city’s website, www.geneva.il.us, and click the “Online Bill Pay” link.

Once logged onto the site, customers can access their billing history, consumption and

usage history and pay by credit card. The only difference customers should notice about their account is a change from a 12-digit account number to a 13-digit account number.

Customers using online bill payment from their bank’s website need to update their account numbers so payments can be applied correctly.

Rant or rave? Opinion split on beavers People always have something to say about North American’s largest rodent GOOD NATURED Pam Otto When it comes to conversation, and newspaper columns, certain topics are bound to cause a stir. Religion is one; politics is another. And then there are rodents.

These furry, gnawing critters, famous for their ever-growing incisors and often impressive reproductive rates, never fail to provoke a response. Folks either say “Yay!” or a very strong “Nay!” Knowing this, and knowing the sorts of feedback past columns on chipmunks and mice have generated, I’m nonetheless putting this topic up for discussion again. Yep, I’m going out on a limb, so to speak, and tackling the topic of our largest North American rodent, the beaver.

If you happen to live near water, whether it’s the Fox River, a tributary or a neighborhood pond, you’ve probably had dealings with these industrious mammals.

Maybe they’ve discovered you have excellent “taste” in landscaping. Or perhaps they’ve toppled a tree in your yard, leaving a gnawed, pointy stump as their calling card.

Even if you don’t live by beaver habitat, you can certainly spot evidence of their presence. Take a walk along the river and it won’t be long before you see bare sticks floating in the water – a sign that Castor canadensis has been snacking nearby.

Some people love ’em, other people loathe ’em. Either way, the industrious beaver plays an integral role in local wetland ecosystems. beavers don’t eat wood. It’s the tree’s nutritious inner bark that they’re after. The stripped sticks that are left behind are like the cobs that remain after you eat an ear of corn.

Right now beaver activity is at a peak. Because they don’t hibernate, beavers need to store up enough food to make it through the winter months. Shrubs, saplings and small trees make up the bulk of the harvest. Cut into manageable lengths, they’re then toted and floated back home to be stored in food caches

– pantries, if you will – next to the underwater entrance of the beaver’s lodge or bank den.

Over time, these branch buffets can grow to an impressive size – sometimes as tall as 6 feet – and include a wide variety woody plant species.

Local favorites include river birch, maple, alder and, as one homeowner told me, “anything that costs more than $100 to replace.”

Wildlife biologists have noted that beavers tend to place favored food items lower in the cache, then top

off the structure with species less preferred – the beaver equivalent of planning to eat dessert first. But this top layer also serves an important function. Extending above the water’s surface, its protruding branches catch falling snow and create an insulating layer that helps keep water from freezing in and around the food; meanwhile, down below, cold water keeps the stored branches edible until spring returns.

But if you happen to find yourself near a local body of water, you may be able to spot some of the more obscure indications that beavers are about.

One sign is bank dens. Fox River beavers do not typically build dams nor live in lodges built of sticks and mud; instead, they excavate dens in the river’s banks. Look for large piles of gnawed sticks at the water’s edge; a den entrance usually lies below.

Scent mounds are another indication of beaver presence in an area. They are more common in spring than fall, but are cool nonetheless.

Beavers use their scent glands, or castor sacs, to mark territories. A beaver will make a small mound of mud and twigs, then anoint it with castoreum. If you spot one, sniff it. It’s a smell that’s hard to describe but, believe it or not, is not unpleasant.

In my book, traits like these catapult Castor canadensis beyond the category of just ordinary rodents, into the realm of extraordinary. But I’d like to know how you vote when it comes to beavers. Are you a yay, or a nay?

Police still investigating cause of the accident

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Friday morning on Deerpath Road, south of Mooseheart Road in Batavia Township.

Christopher Saumell, 27, of the 2400 block of Boxwood Lane, Aurora, died in the single-vehicle crash, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Kane County

Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said in an email that he did not know whether a seat belt was in use, but the driver was not ejected from the vehicle. The speed limit in the area is about 40 mph, he said.

An initial investigation indicates that, at about 8:15 a.m., a 2000 Jeep Cherokee was traveling north on Deerpath Road and, for an unknown reason, went onto the east shoulder, drove back across the road and struck a tree on the west

side of the road, states the release. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and investigators are still working to determine the cause.

Saumell was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was transported to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead.

The accident caused Deerpath Road to close between Mooseheart Road and Tanner Road until about 10 a.m. as the crash was investigated.

The owner of the painting, who was not identified, filed a police report Oct. 11 after several employees notified her that the painting had gone missing, the report states.

The painting was 4 feet by 3 feet in size, but the police report did not contain a more detailed description.

It was taken from the district’s administrative offices, now called the Coultrap Educational Services Center, 227 N. Fourth St., Geneva, and had been hanging on the south wall of the lunch room above some tables and chairs, the report states.

“The complainant was advised that there has been construction going on in the building with multiple contractors that could have taken the painting,” the report states.

Hotel Baker fined for liquor violation KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – Hotel Baker has been fined $250, plus court costs, for a September liquor license violation, according to a St. Charles news release issued Friday.

Hotel Baker, 100 W. Main St., St. Charles, was cited Sept. 5 for letting a patron leave its premises while in possession of an alcohol beverage.

The violation was discussed at the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission meeting Monday. Hotel repre-

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR East side improvements To the Editor: Thank you for your report suggesting that business is improving on our east side (Kane County Chronicle; Oct. 22, 2013).

Our city has endured two years of construction; the end result – from a positive side – is the beautiful road we have in our east corridor. The sacrifice, as reported, has been the negative impact on our merchants.

The city, along with our partners at the chamber of commerce and Downtown St. Charles Partnership, will continue to promote buying local and will continue to impress upon our residents the benefits of a vibrant St. Charles economy – east, west and central.

Valedictorian, salutatorian honors are worth keeping Kaneland High School became the latest area school to revisit designating its top students as valedictorian and salutatorian last week, when the District 302 school board debated whether alternate methods of honoring high-achieving students might make more sense.

While many schools have moved away from bestowing valedictorian and salutatorian honors at graduation, we think it is a tradition worth continuing.

Some school representatives contend that the pursuit

of the valedictorian honor drives some students to shy away from taking classes that might be especially difficult.

But as long as schools use class rank, ultra-competitive students will let grade-point average fixations dictate their academic strategy, regardless of whether valedictorian honors are at stake.

And, surely there are instances when the carrot of striving for these honors helps bring out the best in talented students who, in some instances, might otherwise be content to coast on their

natural ability during senior year.

As the Kane County Chronicle reported in the spring, Batavia School District 101 and Geneva School District 304 no longer recognize a valedictorian, instead honoring top students by letting them wear special stoles at graduation.

But what’s the harm of presenting a class valedictorian and salutatorian, as long as parents help students who are pursuing the honors keep things in perspective?

land district wrote in a recent letter to the editor, competition is part of the high school culture, most notably in athletics. If high school student-athletes are asked to be mentally tough enough to deal with a disappointing loss or being cut from a team, other students can learn the constructive lessons that come from falling short of a high academic goal.

Some schools in the state have moved toward lauding the top 10 seniors or other larger pools of high achievers, considering how many

gifted students are so closely clustered together. That makes some sense, but a valedictorian and salutatorian can still be part of the picture.

Being named valedictorian or salutatorian should not be viewed as the be-all, end-all for a high school student.

A top ranking does not necessarily mean that student is the smartest in his or her class or the best prepared to thrive in college.

It is simply a well-earned honor, and one worthy of public recognition when it comes time for graduation.

Now if we could only get more people to fill in some of the empty stores on Randall, that would be great.

No more money I think, as taxpayers in Batavia, that we should act like the government. Let’s withhold our taxes … school districts want more money. Everybody wants more money. You are taxing us out of our homes, and I think that we, as citizens, should be able to withhold our taxes. These people who want more taxes are benefiting from our dollars.

Not a good solution President Obama promised with the Affordable Care Act lower health insurance monthly premiums. All the Democrats, liberals and the media expounded on the lower premiums. Now that the insurance exchanges have listed the costs for the Affordable Care Act, the monthly premiums with the subsidies may be lower, but the deductibles are in the thousands of dollars. It would be cheaper for individuals and families to pay the penalty and continue to use the emergency rooms for their health care, rather than signing up for Obamacare.

Obamacare glitches Watching the weekend news shows, it’s amazing how the liberals and conservatives spin the failure of the computer launch of Obamacare. The liberal stations state, what do you expect from the government and the mass of people logging into the website, and it is not a problem. The taxpayers spent $300 million on a website that does not work and expect to equal that amount just to repair and fix the problems. Maybe the liberals think the money is somebody else’s. But it is my money and their tax money that has been wasted on computer programs for Obamacare. What other glitches will appear later in the health programs that are not being mentioned?

Keep the land open In Tuesday’s Chronicle, I read an article about the First Street development. I couldn’t believe that. People have been talking about how nice that open land is along the Fox River, not just for us, but for future generations, and now in the article, it says there’s going to be a fifth floor on the building. There will be a parking garage? Is there any way to keep some of that land open. The fewer buildings there, the better. I’m sure there will be nice buildings, but the open land along the river would be beautiful. Compare it to Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. The article talked about TIF and whatever.

It’s confusing to the average person. But Chicago didn’t build along the lakeshore. Let’s keep some of this land open.

The Vietnam War Moving Wall in Aurora Veterans Day is coming up Nov. 11, and a veteran friend of mine told me the Vietnam War Moving Wall was going to be at West Aurora High School [in November]. I told him, good, I would like to go again. I’ve been to the Wall in Washington, D.C., as Vietnam vets call it, years ago. Now, the more I’ve tried to come to terms and go to the Wall again, I come to realize that I can’t do it. For me, it is very, very emotional and disturbing, and I realize I can’t take all the emotion again. I have over 100 missions behind enemy lines in north Vietnam, and I saw lots of planes go down and went to too many funerals of friends. Having said that, I would encourage everyone to go ... to West Aurora High School in remembrance of the 58,000 young American men and women who lost their lives in Vietnam and also in remembrance of all the POW-MIAs still not accounted for.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A tipped ball at the line of scrimmage came fluttering toward Batavia linebacker Anthony Thielk, who had a potential interception in his sights but couldn’t reel in the ball.

Thielk, exasperated with himself, followed the Batavia defense’s practice ritual of doing a few push-ups as punishment before springing back to his feet.

“I jumped to go pick it, it got tipped like 15 feet in the air, and then I lost it in the lights,” Thielk said. “I bobbled it but I dropped it. Yeah, I had to do some push-ups.”

Good thing for Thielk.

Batavia’s starters – most of whom played less than a quarter of Friday’s 62-14 Upstate Eight Conference River rout of Elgin – welcomed as much exercise as they could get to stay warm on a mostly sedentary night at Bulldog Stadium.

Batavia (8-1, 6-0 UEC River) led 42-0 with 3:08 still to play in the first quarter en route to clinching the conference title outright, one game ahead of second-place Geneva.

Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron has yet to lose a conference game in his three years as head coach.

This year’s Bulldogs outscored their six UEC River foes, 304-83.

“Our theme is ‘All In’ this year, and what I would say about that is coaches, kids, players, parents, community, youth programs – it’s kind of one, big unifying force,” Piron said. “I guess I’m an administrator, if you will. Hopefully a good one.”

Batavia has a loaded roster, and several of the Bulldogs’ second- and third-stringers had their chance to shine from the second quarter on.

Among the other first-half highlights: a 36-yard touchdown pass from Micah Coffey to speedster Rourke Mullins that opened the scoring, Mullins’ 40-yard interception return for a touchdown and a blocked punt by Forrest Gilbertson that gave the Bulldogs possession at the Elgin 9.

“Obviously we’re very outmatched strength-wise,” Elgin coach Kyle Rohde said.

“We have a lot of work to

do in the offseason, and the kids know that. When you bench 100 pounds and [the guys across you] benches 300 pounds, it’s a big difference.”

Piron, though, saluted the Maroons’ second-half effort despite facing a 55-8 halftime deficit and a running clock.

“The best part of it was how Elgin kept fighting and how their kids played so hard but so clean,” Piron said. “We’ve been in some other games this year that weren’t quite that way.”

Backup running back Patrick Ward gained 64 yards on seven carries for Batavia,

while reserve quarterback Evan Acosta had a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Now Batavia can turn its full attention to tonight’s playoff pairings announcement, with the Bulldogs sitting on the 6A/7A bubble.

“It’s kind of hard not to talk about it – 7A’s the most stacked class [in the state], I think,” Thielk said. “We’re excited. Anxious. We’ve been talking about it since this week. We just can’t wait to find out who we’re playing.

We’re ready to go. We’re ready for a whole new season.”

On the second of the four sacks, Geneva’s Stephen Kemp recovered a Polich fumble on the Streamwood 40-yard line that set up the Vikings’ fourth score of the half.

“I’ll have to look at the tape, but I think these guys were all in the right spots tonight,” Wicinski said of his defense. “First indications are we were pretty good.

We’ve had trouble with fits and just having good integri-

In the past, Miller said that the Vikings’ offense usually went with blue hair and the defense black, but the team decided to go blond this time.

Geneva players are hoping that their blond moment in the season finale will carry over into next week’s firstround playoff game.

“I think this is a good win going in to the playoffs that will keep our minds right,” Miller said. “When the playoffs start, we’re going to be strong.”

GENEVA – In the Geneva football team’s 55-6 drubbing of Streamwood in the regular-season finale Friday night, the Vikings proved that blonds have more fun.

After topping Metea Valley a week ago to clinch the playoffs, Geneva playe r s d e c i d e d Pace Temple that Mohawks and dyed blond hair was the best way to commemorate the occasion.

With blond locks flowing, Geneva closed out the regular season with a near-flawless performance against the onewin Sabres. The Vikings blew the game open in the first half, limiting Streamwood’s offense to just 78 yards while scoring on each of its five possessions. Add in the Vikings’ first special teams touchdown of the year – a 70-yard kickoff return from Chris Barger – and Geneva heads into the playoffs on a high note, winners of six straight games.

Gain 36 yards on the first play from scrimmage, score four plays later, sprinkle in some early inconsistency but ultimately handle Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Morris?

That’ll work.

Kaneland closed the regular season with a 49-14 victory against the Redskins on Friday, improving to 8-1 and 4-1 in the conference as it awaits today’s tonight’s playoff pairings.

The Knights insist last week’s 31-21 loss at Sycamore – a result that helped the Spartans to the NI Big 12 East title and likely paved the way for a top seed in 5A – is out of their memory banks. Quarterback Drew David’s long read-option keeper to open the Morris game provided the first bit of proof.

“A night like tonight going into the playoffs, I feel very good about it,” Knights senior wide receiver/linebacker Dylan Nauert said. “The focus is where it needs to be, the players are where we need to be, and we’re ready for it. I’m glad this is the way we’re going into the playoffs.”

“I looked at the tape last week, really wasn’t happy with how I played, but had a better week of practice this week with a lot of help from the coaches and everyone around me.”

Snyder’s mindset seemed to be contagious. David fired four first-half touchdown passes, including scores of 15 and 41 yards to Nauert in the last 1:46 of the first quarter. David connected with six different receivers before halftime, with the longest gain a 44-yard, one-handed catch and run by junior Connor Fedderly that set up a 6-yard Isaac Swithers scoring run.

The Sycamore senior made an impact on both offense and defense in the Spartans’ 41-7 win over Yorkville, which gave Sycamore (9-0, 5-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) the outright Northern Illinois Big 12 East title.

The Spartans’ conference championship is their first outright league crown since 1981, when they won the Little Seven Conference. It’s also the first undefeated regular season for Sycamore since 1978.

“That’s always our first goal,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “You win this conference, you’ve done some work. I’m so proud of our kids.”

Niemann caught four passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. With Sycamore leading 7-0 in the first quarter, Niemann picked up a fumble

ELGIN – For the second Friday in row, a St. Charles team took on Larkin to get back on a winning track after a lopsided loss the week before.

And for the second week in a row, the St. Charles team – this time East – left Memorial Field back in the win column. The Saints downed the Royals, 55-12, in the season’s final Brannon Barry Upstate Eight Conference River contest.

The victory clinched a second straight playoff berth for East (6-3, 4-2 UEC River).

The Saints wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

Brannon Barry returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

Senior Erik Anderson (112 yards rushing on nine carries) scored two first-half rushing touchdowns on runs of 13 and 46 yards. Junior Ramon Lopez rumbled 4 yards for a score.

Anderson scored his third touchdown on the night at the 3:41 mark in the third quarter on 38-yard pass from Mitchell to put East up, 55-12.

The Saints defense limited Larkin (3-6, 2-4) to 182 total yards and picked off two of Kemmerin Blalark’s passes.

The game marked the end of the Mike Scianna era at Larkin. Scianna is stepping down after four years as the Royals coach with a 11-25 record.

It was a welcome bounceback for the Saints, who were coming off a 47-14 loss to Batavia last week.

East is expected to land in the 7A playoff draw.

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys soccer team made its fans wonder if it was going to be able to advance out of their own regional Friday night against the Rolling Meadows.

After trailing two goals midway through the opening half, the eighth-seeded Mustangs of the IHSA Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional came storming back to even the match by halftime before finally falling to the Saints, 6-2.

The Saints play the winner of Glenbard North-Wheaton North match, which will be played today, in the IHSA Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional semifinals Tuesday in Schaumburg.

“I think they (St. Charles East) did a great job of going up on us 2-0,” Rolling Meadows coach Peter Mikulak said. “But then I think we did a great job of coming back to even the game. St. Charles (East) came out with a lot more intensity and we just kept waiting for that spark that never came. We did not make smart decisions in the back in the second half and it

St. Charles East, who defeated St. Charles North in the regional semifinal, 2-0, to advance to the final, opened the scoring with 33 minutes left in the first half when Taylor Ortiz beat Mustangs goalkeeper Marc Quezada with a right-footed shot from 12 yards out for the 1-0 advantage.

The Saints upped their lead to 2-0 more than ten minutes later when Ortiz sent a crossing pass into the Mustangs penalty area when Zach Manibog advanced the ball into the Mustangs goal for what seemed to be a comfortable lead.

The Rockets cleared the corner and countered. Jacob Schutta assisted an Alan Camarena goal to give Burlington Central a 1-0 win and the regional title.

“It was one the best shots I have had. I just aimed and took the shot. I didn’t even see

the goalie,” Camarena said. “I am pretty excited.”

The swift counter by the Rockets went as well as it could have. Schutta’s pass was bouncing when it came to Camerena.

“I heard Alan calling for the ball and I hit it one time, as quick as I could, to get him the ball, and Alan made an excellent shot,” Schutta said.

Camarena let the ball bounce a few times before taking the shot on the half volley from the top of the box. The ball flew past Kaneland goalkeeper Jarred Karr into the

“It was nice to get the result. I think that we deserved to win,” Burlington Central coach Mike Gecan said. “That is not taking anything away from Kaneland. They are a very good team and that game could have went either way.

We found a way to score, and that is what great teams do.”

Burlington Central dominated most of the match. The Rockets came out with pressure, but could not break through the Knights’ backline. Burlington Central out-

shot Kaneland, 17-4.

“They had lots of shots, but they weren’t quality either until that last one,” Knights coach Scott Parillo said.

“There was one quality shot the whole game and it goes in.

That is just the way it goes.

“It was a good game – two good teams going out and fighting each other. I wish it was still us in the playoff, but it is not.”

The Rockets will head to the Burlington Central Sectional and will play the winner of the Rochelle Regional on Tuesday.

Girls state tennis entries bow out on second day KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Batavia’s top doubles team of Amelia Cogan and JennyMizikar was eliminated from the IHSA girls tennis state tournament with Friday’s fourth-round consolation loss.

Neuqua Valley’s Riti Vohra and Taylor Hershey paired for a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory at Rolling Meadows that ended the duo’s season.

Before the match went final, howe v e r , C o g a n Amelia Cogan and Mizikar already had authored a new chapter in the program’s history books. Mizikar, a senior, leaves with 129 wins, the most in Batavia history. Cogan, a junior, boasts 104 victories, and is the first player to reach the century mark before her senior season.

“A record-setting year in a lot of ways for them, and certainly a doubles team that’s going to be sorely missed next year,” Bulldogs coach Brad Nelson said. “They’ve really set the bar for everyone else that’s coming through.”

Cogan – who is expected to move with her family to Boise, Idaho before her senior season – joined Mizikar for three state tournaments.

Friday also saw the elimination of the rest of the Kane County Chronicle-area contingent still alive in the backdraw.

In singles play, Geneva junior Kirby Einck opened her day by yielding a combined three games in victories against Bryttish Burts of Thornton Fractional South and Leigh Friedman of Maine South.

Einck bowed out in the sixth round of consolation play when De La Jenny Mizikar Salle’s Khalia Powell scored a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Kaneland junior Sammie Schrepferman encountered what Knights coach Tim Larsen called “a [darn] robot” of a player in her fourth-round consolation opponent, Nicole Tyulpa of Rock Island. Larsen counted just two unforced errors from Tyulpa in a 6-2, 6-0 win.

On the other side of the field, Ephraim Lee did most of the heavy lifting for Marian.

If the Hurricanes feel well-rested heading into the playoffs, they have Lee to thank. He tallied three rushing touchdowns (63 yards, 13 yards and 48 yards), turned a screen pass from Billy Bahl into a 19-yard touchdown reception, and returned a kickoff 84 yards to cap off his near-perfect day.

“Our kids stayed with us and we practiced really hard the last two weeks, which is pretty hard to do when you’re in the situation that we were in,” Crabel said. “But our staff and our kids, they stayed with it, and we scratched a couple out at the end of the season.”

We’re both the captains, so I feel like we have kept the team going, kept them pushing, and it kind of helped them get used to varsity.

When did you first start as a distance runner?

I’ve been running since fifth grade. Ran a 5K, liked it and stayed with it.

How much do you and other runners think about Geneva’s string of cross country success?

Lots of teams play ultimate frisbee or have a quirky side game as an alternate workout.

What do the Vikings do?

Yeah, actually during the summer camp we’ll have practices on Friday, captain’s practices, and after that we’ll play a game, and it’s usually ultimate frisbee. … It’s very active. The frisbee’s always moving, and everybody can kind of throw a frisbee and catch, so it’s not too difficult.

Talk about your dad [Eric].

Is he more a team doctor or consultant for cross country?

I guess he’s more like a team consultant doctor than [anything]. … He’s the team physician for the football team. He’s an orthopedic doctor [at] Fox Valley Orthopedics.

What’s your injury history over the years? Does your dad just treat you at home?

I’ve had a lot of injuries.

I’ve broken my foot, my ankle, a couple of other bones. … He can check things out at home, but we go to the office to get the X-rays and stuff.

Of course, NIU has to take care of its own business first.

If the Huskies falter, it won’t matter what Fresno State, which is ranked one spot ahead of No. 18 NIU in the BCS standings, does the rest of the year. There won’t be any worry about finishing in the top 12 of the standings, or in the top 16 and ahead of the American Athletic Conference champion.

The Huskies are 31-point favorites against Eastern Michigan this afternoon. NIU also should be a heavy favorite against UMass next week.

It’s hard not to look ahead to the game against Ball State on

Nov. 13.

NIU coach Rod Carey isn’t looking forward. All he has to do is look back 10 years to see that midseason BCS rankings don’t really matter.

In 2003, NIU was ranked 10th when the first BCS standings were released after starting 7-0. The Huskies lost at Bowling Green that week with College Gameday in attendance, finished 10-2 and didn’t go to a bowl game.

Carey has mentioned the 2003 Huskies to his current squad, talking about how the great start didn’t amount to a storybook ending.

“I tend to look at that and the lesson learned from that.

Not putting them down in any way, shape or form because that was a great team and we love those guys,” Carey said.

“We had them here [for homecoming], but they’ll say that it doesn’t mean anything until

you’re done. So you better do it the way you got here. The way we’ve gotten in this position so far is one little thing at a time.”

Eastern Michigan comes into today’s game at 1-6, with the Eagles’ only win coming against FCS Howard. EMU coach Ron English also is serving as the team’s defensive coordinator this season. English served as Michigan’s defensive coordinator from 2006-07 and was Louisville’s defensive coordinator in 2008.

The switch hasn’t helped, as the Eagles rank last in the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense (49.7 points a game) and total defense (514 yards a game).

It could be a huge day for Jordan Lynch and the NIU offense. However, if the Eagles were to somehow pull off a huge upset, the Huskies know there won’t be any talk of the BCS on Sunday.

Peer pressure is not just a kid thing Sometimes I am that mom. You know, the one who says, “No.” The one who upsets the balance and kills the joy for everyone else involved in the proposed plan. It’s no fun being that mom, but sometimes, such is a mom’s life.

Being the mom who says “yes,” on the other hand, is so much more fun.

“Yes! Yes! Yes!” Yes, that does feel good. But sometimes parenting gets in the way. What a drag.

It’s especially draggy when yours appears to be the only “no” vote.

Parenting is hard enough. But I think we make it even harder for ourselves when we don’t simply trust our own guts and go with our initial instinct about how we should handle a situation. We make it harder on our fellow parents in the trenches, too, when we exert peer pressure and challenge each other’s parenting decisions.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose For example, another mom recently pulled me aside at a social gathering to encourage me to reconsider my decision about my kid’s participation in something I’d already weighed in on days before. Because, she said, a couple of the other kids had asked her to speak to me about it.

Really? Yes. Awkward? You bet.

Did I change my mind? No. Who’s in charge here?

I get it. I have no qualms with kids exploring limits. While it’s not always easy

to deal with, I kind of expect that sort of lobbying from kids from time to time. It’s their job to explore the possibilities and discern what their parameters are.

Awesome! Ask for the moon, I say.

Go for it. I can’t always say yes, I tell Noah and Holly, but hey, there’s a reason you’re still in my nest.

Because while being a cabbage-patchkid is all the rage among adolescents (who are too young to get the reference – but still, I make it), sometimes, it helps to have a parent. (Um, yes, that’s a matter of opinion, but I digress.)

That said, I’m a huge fan of picking my battles. I say “yes” as often as I reasonably can.

Adolescence is prime time for learning independence, after all. But in certain situations, I just have to say “no,” for now.

There will be lots and lots of time for yes, in the future.

I like the way my friend Hilde puts it when she’s faced with similar quandaries.

“Save some things for later,” she says to her teenagers. I love the diplomatic, warm “yes” that’s implied.

So, it’s not “no” forever, just no for now. Nice.

But I get it. It’s hard to hear “no.”

“His mom” or “her mom said yes,” I sometimes hear, from my children.

“But I’m not his (or her) mom. I’m your mom,” I say.

You know the drill.

Sometimes I make unpopular decisions. It’s a lonely thing, at times, but sometimes, such is a mom’s life.

Fall: When nature prepares for coming months Regular readers of this column may recall the enthusiasm with which I embrace autumn. I just delight in the smell of wood fires at dusk; leaves turning and twirling on their way to the ground; and the chill in the air that urges us to start baking again and makes us reach for an extra blanket and add another log to the fire.

The same short days and cool temperatures that drive us to various acts of domesticity induce our gardens to get ready for the coming months as well, and as the trees prepare for their long winter’s nap, they put on a dazzling show.

All perennial plants, including trees, take precautions to help them survive the freezing temperatures and harsh winds of our long, cold northern winters. Some parts of a plant (stems, trunks,

Unlike evergreens, whose tough needles can withstand freezing, broadleaved plants and trees are not able to protect their leaves from the elements, so they lose them.

Preparations for this eventuality begin in early autumn, with the gradual closing off of veins bringing water and other nutrients into and out of the leaves. This affects the production of the pigment chlorophyll, which makes plants green.

• FALL Continued from page 31 Chlorophyll, essential to photosynthesis – the chemical process by which plants convert sunlight to food – is constantly produced and broken down during the growing season.

But the arrival of shorter days and chilly nights signals a tree to slow its manufacture of chlorophyll in advance of winter dormancy, and what remains in the leaf is eventually broken down, leaving other pigments that were always there to take center stage.

The reds, yellows, purples, and golds that dominate the autumn landscape are due to the presence of these other pigments found in leaf cells.

Carotenoids, the group of pigments that give daffodils, carrots, and bananas their yellow and orange colors, are revealed once the chlorophyll disappears.

No longer relegated to the shadows, they show up in the spectacular yellows and golds of the gingko, witch hazel, hickory and redbud in fall.

Anthocyanins, the red and purple pigments that color fruits we love, like strawber-

ries, cranberries, red apples and plums, are produced by some plants in the fall as a result of bright light and high sugar content in leaves.

When present, these pigments can mask the yellows and result in the purples and fiery reds of some maples, oaks, serviceberry and dogwoods come October.

While there is no real way to accurately predict fall color, warm, sunny days, followed by cool, but not freezing, nights seem to result in the most spectacular displays.

The sunny days cause increased sugar production in the leaves, and the chilly nights and closing veins trap the sugars there, where they trigger anthocyanin production, mak-

ing the reds more vibrant.

Soil moisture is also a factor in the brilliance of fall color, which means that inadequate rainfall during spring and summer can alter the timing and intensity of color change.

So, as we bustle about preserving peaches and canning tomatoes, unearthing flannels, and bringing out our warm woolen mittens this fall, the garden is hard at work, too, even if we can’t always see it.

When we finally do, though, it’s magnificent.

This question, for many readers of “Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital,” is the crux of a complicated, polarizing debate that engaged not just New Orleans but much of this country’s medical community in the aftermath of Katrina.

At the forefront of this volatile exchange – though largely mute herself – stands Anna Pou, a highly regarded head and neck surgeon known for her compassionate care. She was arrested and brought before a grand jury on second-degree murder charges in the deaths of four patients. Two nurses, also arrested, were later told that they would have to testify about what happened in exchange for not being prosecuted.

Numerous compelling issues arise as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheri Fink slowly, steadily, fashions a multi-dimensional view of a city, a medical establishment, a hospital and its hierarchy, a legal system, a community with deep spiritual beliefs – all in the throes of unthinkable and protracted chaos. Fink, a physician with experience in natural disasters and armed conflicts, began her research in February 2007, a year and a half after Katrina struck and the city flooded. From her impressive collected research, including interviews, she sculpts a broader, deeper view than even the grand jury had of exactly how the staff at Memorial functioned day by day. Here, finally, we see what really happened. Yet many unpleasant questions remain.

“Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital” is written by Sheri Fink. and nurses had to cool patients with bits of cardboard they used as fans. Temperatures rose to over 100 degrees, water stopped running, toilets clogged and overflowed creating reeking cesspools, respirators quit and nurses had to hand pump air into patients’ lungs. Some of these patients died and were moved to the chapel where they quickly began to decompose. Food, while available, had to be carefully meted because, traditionally, staff reported to hurricane duty with friends, loved ones and pets. Katrina was no exception.

Because of early expectations of evacuation, many patients were carried on sheets down pitch-black staircases to the second floor where they languished, scattered about, often in their own excrement and suffering from dehydration. Patients suffered various conditions including post-surgical and ICU status, amputations, late-stage cancer, organ failures, infections and lung diseases.

Nurses and doctors worked with little sleep while the sounds of gunfire rang out, especially in the night when they were left alone to guard their own hospital from what they were told was looting and escalating violence.

No plan for follow-up care could be made because a lack of working phones, Internet and radio communications.

These devices, including AC and TV, were available next door in a cancer center that the hospital administrators took refuge in, unbeknownst to staff.

Even the hospital owner, Tenet Healthcare Corp., was slow to act because of an assumption that the government would coordinate evacuation. But the military and police force, what was seen of these people, were busy plucking people off rooftops and worrying over their own safety. Further, they seemed to balk at picking up the acutely ill because they demanded more time and special handling. Some hospital staff determined that the sickest would be taken out last, if at all.

On Thursday the hospital was entirely evacuated. There was an understanding that no one would be left behind.

People known for their good works, like Pou and several others profiled here, decide to inject lethal doses of medication into those deemed sickest. One of the determining factors was the existence of a DNR order. This determination ignores the fact that DNR does not indicate a patient’s current condition.

Because Fink lets each person involved narrate their unique point of view, readers perceive numerous sides of a complex situation. The debate may not necessarily be about the right and wrong of euthanasia but about how exhausted, frightened, sleep-deprived medical staffs are expected to carry on.

Something seemed to happen on Thursday morning in the rush to evacuate.

Compassionate euthanasia became the rallying cry in the media and courtroom but that is not necessarily the debate that matters most.

Fink’s comprehensive work calls up “Lord of the Flies,” a cautionary tale where order is lost in the throes of disaster. Fink contrasts the situation at Memorial with that of Charity Hospital in New Orleans where only three people died and where all procedures and protocols remained in place throughout the disaster.

At Memorial, 45 bodies were recovered.

Strength-training exercise can help slow bone loss Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard that weight-bearing exercises are a good way to prevent osteoporosis. Can you describe a few?

Dear Reader: Use it or lose it: That message applies to most parts of our body. We see it most clearly with the muscles.

If we don’t use them, they wither. But if we regularly challenge them, they bulk up.

The same is true with bones.

Most of our bones bear our weight, except when we’re lying down. That’s what they “want” to do. If we don’t give them enough time each day to do that, they tend to get thin.

This is a particular problem if a person also has a genetic tendency to develop osteoporosis. Inactivity speeds the thinning of the bones that occurs in osteoporosis. This makes them more susceptible to fractures.

Weight-bearing (or strength-training) exercise is any activity that puts stress on bones. Walking and climbing stairs are examples.

Weight-bearing exercises can help to slow bone loss and stimulate new bone growth.

A complete strength-training workout involves eight to 12 exercises. Together, they exercise

Below, I’ll describe three strength-training exercises.

They are designed for older adults and people who are new to strength training.

Do strength-training exercises two or three times a week. Allow at least 48 hours between workouts. Try to do each exercise eight to 12 times, or repetitions (“reps”). These repetitions make up one set. Do two to four sets of each exercise. Rest for 30 to 60 seconds between sets.

To do these exercises, you’ll need a sturdy chair, athletic shoes, an exercise mat and weights. (You should be able to do no more than eight to 12 reps of each exercise with the weights you choose.)

• Bridge: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Put your hands next to your hips with palms flat on the floor. Keep your back straight as you lift your buttocks as high as you

can off the floor. Pause. Lower your buttocks without touching the floor, then lift again.

• Standing calf raise: Stand with your feet flat on the floor.

Hold on to the back of your chair for balance. Raise yourself up on the balls of your feet, as high as possible. Hold briefly, then lower.

• Overhead press: Stand with your feet slightly apart. Hold a dumbbell in each hand on either side of your shoulders, at shoulder height, with your palms facing forward. Slowly lift the weights straight up until your arms are fully extended.

Pause. Slowly lower the dumbbells to shoulder level.

Dear Vicky: Sooner or later, Jeff is going to have to deal with this problem. He can’t bluff his way in the work world forever. You should insist that he gain reading proficiency, but be as encouraging and supportive as possible.

He needn’t feel bad (or remain in a state of denial) about being a poor reader. There are many possible reasons for it. English may be a second language for him. He may have received poor reading fundamentals in grade school or he may have a reading handicap, such as dyslexia. A reading clinic can answer this question.

Insist that Jeff be tested and then help him follow up with appropriate remedies.

Dear Abby: I have a 10-year-old son. “Zack’s” a great kid, creative, funny and athletic. He has decided to grow his hair long. My husband and I figure it’s not illegal or immoral, so why fight it?

My family does not share our opinion. My mom and sister are cruel in their opposition to Zack growing his hair. They tell him he looks like a girl and call him names. There have been bribes, bullying and instances of utter insanity on their part, trying to make him cut it.

My sister’s son has been physically and verbally cruel to Zack, and she thinks it’s funny. She’s repeating a pattern from when we were children of being the “toughest” – if you can’t handle the abuse, you’re a “baby.”

I need to know how to stand up to these family members for my son. It’s a struggle for me to speak to them face-to-face, and they have called me a coward for sending email messages.

In today’s deal, South must find a ninth trick in three notrump. If he makes the wrong play, he will strike out. What should he do after West leads the diamond queen?

North hoped to find a 4-4 major-suit fit, but when it didn’t happen, he jumped to three no-trump.

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, two diamonds and five clubs. He has two 50-50 shots for his ninth trick: West might have the spade king, or East might hold the heart ace. Which should he try?

The odds are equal, but declarer should play a heart to his king first. Why? First, suppose the worst happens: West takes the king with his ace and returns a heart, the defenders taking four tricks in the suit. South still has the spade finesse on the back burner.

Second, an expert sitting West with, say, ace-third, might duck, thinking that declarer has K-Q-10 and wanting to give him a guess on the second round of the suit.

If declarer tries the spade finesse first, he should fail with this layout. East will win with his king and return a diamond.

When South plays a heart from the board, East grabs the trick and leads another diamond, giving the defenders one spade, one heart and three diamonds.
