ednesday, I spent a chilly afternoon on the football practice fields at St. Charles North High School watching the kickers practice.

Two kickers took turns setting balls on the stand, counting

their steps and kicking through the goalposts.

Usually, I can see her ponytail sticking out of her helmet, but Kat Stutesman had tucked her hair just so it wasn’t visible. She was wearing bright pink socks,

but so was half of the varsity team. “They’re the warmest,” she said.

Kat is the only girl on the team, and the only female high school football player I’ve seen in a long time.

She told me how she wanted to join the military after high school, possibly the Air Force Academy.

Fred Norris honored with Barth Award

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Before he arrived at the 29th annual William D. Barth Award ceremony Thursday evening, Fred Norris said he had no idea that he was the man of the hour.

He said he was originally led to believe that his brother would be honored Thursday.

But when he arrived at Riverside Receptions in Geneva, he learned that he would be this year’s recipient.

“It’s a humbling experience because you just do what you do in the community,” he said.

Between government, church and service organizations, the list of civic engagements Fred Norris has been involved with is as diverse as it is lengthy.

His involvement includes serving as St. Charles mayor for 20 years and as an alderman, as well as service organizations such as the Illinois Jaycees, Fox Valley Shrine Club, Cotillion Club of Fox Valley, the Elgin Communi-

Fred Norris was nominated by his son, Fred Norris Jr., who said his father’s involvement encompasses education, charity, service, civic engagement, government, youth services, culture and service with his church, which is why he wanted to nominate him. He said his father helped raise money to build a facility to train first responders at Elgin Community College and also helped secure 9,000 acres to add to the Kane County Forest Preserve.

Fred Norris said being involved in his community is just how he was raised.

“It’s just a part of living in a community you love,” he said. “If you really want to make a hometown your home, get involved.”

‘It doesn’t look like it’s an accident’ Family upset after teen’s monument gravestone destroyed

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A vehicle’s tire marks were visible Thursday at the Garfield Cemetery, and they were leading to a broken monument headstone that had been created to pay tribute to Quincee Miller, a Batavia teenager who died three years ago.

The large, dark monument was hit by a vehicle and had split in two, with one piece that i n c l u d e s t h e Quincee word, “Love,” Miller and Quincee’s photo resting against a fence.

Another piece, with her name, birthdate and date of death, was knocked off its base, a few dozen feet away.

Family members who had gathered at the cemetery to mark the three-year anniversary of Quincee’s death found the monument in ruins, and they want to know what happened. Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman is investigating and said Thursday that the monument had been

run over by a vehicle, in what “appears to be intentional, or a reckless act.”

Quincee Miller was 15 years old when she took her own life Oct. 20, 2010. She had been bullied. Family members since have become strong advocates in the fight against bullying and teen suicide.

A cousin, Shawn Murphy, said family members were upset over the incident and filed a police report. Family photos of what the monument looked like while it was standing showed it was a large, prominent salute to Quincee.

Near the broken monument on Thursday afternoon was a handwritten note on a sheet of lined paper, saying there would be “no hard feelings” for anyone who comes forward with information about what happened. It was signed by the Miller family.

The note urged those with information to call the cemetery, but cemetery officials had no comment Thursday.

Nesbitt now lives in Georgia. She said she was a close friend of Quincee’s and wanted to do something to help.

She said Quincee was “a great person, and that the family had been through so much already.

“My main thing is that I don’t want them to have to pay

anything again,” Nesbitt said.

Nesbitt said she hopes whoever is responsible for the damage would “have the courage to come forward.” She said she was heartened to see the amount of money that had been raised so far.

Tale of two Obamacares emerging as number of states bypass U.S. flaws

By SHANNON PETTYPIECE, FREEMAN KLOPOTT and MARGARET NEWKIRK Bloomberg News NEW YORK – Don’t tell Elisabeth Benjamin it’s tough to sign up for Obamacare.

For two weeks, she has been enrolling uninsured people from her New York City office through an online marketplace created by the law.

Most recently, she helped a Bronx home-health worker in her 30s get health coverage for $70 a month.

“By week two, the system was pretty smooth,” said Benjamin, who’s certified to assist people signing up for health insurance.

In Texas, which has more uninsured than any other state, 90 health insurance navigators, doing the same job as Benjamin, haven’t been able to sign up a single person despite a flood of interest, said Tim McKinney, head of the United Way of Tarrant County.

The difference: New York built its own exchange website and it has been running with few technical troubles since the opening week while Texas, and 35 other states, is tied to a federal site plagued by errors and delays.

Three weeks after the sites debuted, a tale of two Obamacares is emerging with perceptions about the effectiveness of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 varying widely from state to state.

With many Republican-controlled states refusing to build exchanges, supporters of the law from Texas to Michigan to Florida have been relying on the troubled federal site and preaching patience, rather than enrolling the uninsured.

The state and federal exchanges are designed to sell health insurance to millions of Americans under the law known as Obamacare. More than half of about 500,000 enrollees since the Oct. 1 opening come from the 14 states running their own exchanges

independent of the U.S. government. While enrollment continues through March, consumers must sign up and choose a plan by about Dec. 15 to get insurance coverage as of Jan. 1.

Elizabeth Watts of Kentucky, which runs an independent exchange, had her application accepted at 12:04 a.m. on Oct. 1, making her one of the first to start the enrollment process. Because of a rare disorder, she has already had a heart attack and a stent put in place. She makes $220 a week working at a Shell service station. Previously, the only insurance she could find was for $300 a month, which was too much for her to afford.

Using the exchange site, Watts learned she was eligible for Medicaid, the state-federal program for the poor that was expanded under the law and will cover most of her costs.

“It’s been such a relief,” said Watts, 31. The last time she saw her heart doctor, “it took 15 minutes and cost $160.”

It’s a very different story happening in Texas, said McKinney of the United Way that serves the Fort Worth area. Instead of enrolling consumers, 90 Texas navigators funded in part by a $5.9 million federal grant are spending their time answering caller questions and holding educational events.

They haven’t been able to complete the enrollment process on the federal exchange website without encountering errors.

The navigators strongly encourage each caller and visitor to return next month, when McKinney said he hopes the problems will be resolved.

“We knew there would be problems, we didn’t know the extent of the problems,” McKinney said in a telephone interview. “By this time, we expected the navigators to be enrolling a pretty good number of people on the site. But that just isn’t happening.”

Tegeler announces candidacy for Kane Circuit Court judge

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva attorney D.J. Tegeler has joined the race for the Kane County Circuit Court judge seat that will open in October 2014 after Judge Karen Simpson retires.

Tegeler, 50, said he became a licensed attorney in 1990 and has handled a variety of cases in his career, including criminal jury and bench trials and divorce cases.

“About the only case I’ve never tried is a medical malpractice case,” he said.

“There’s not a courtroom in Kane County that I haven’t done a trial in. I’ve literally tried a case in every room.”

Tegeler, who ran for a judge position four years ago, is running for the Kane County Circuit Court judge position on the Republican ticket. He joins the race with Associate Kane County Judge Marmarie J. Kostelny, currently assigned to the

drug rehabilitation court, who also is running on the Republican ticket.

Tegeler has served has the legal counsel for the Kane County Republican Central Committee, vice chairman of the Western Township Republicans and is the president of the Mill Creek Water Reclamation District.

He said the water district has a $6 million to $7 million budD.J. Tegeler get, which was in the red when he took over four years ago, but has been in the black for the last three years.

“When it comes to working within a budget, I’ve proven that I can do that,” he said.

Tegeler was the chair of the Criminal Law Committee several years ago and helped set up the rules and regulations of the county’s drug court program, as well as the

county’s second chance program.

If elected, Tegeler said he hopes to work toward streamlining divorce and custody cases “so kids in divorce cases aren’t in the middle of the tug of war.” He said he’d like to set local rules and regulations that would help complete the custody portion of the case immediately.

He said he’s always been interested in becoming a judge because he truly enjoys practicing law and has experience with looking at both sides of each case.

“Not only do you render decisions and have to realize it’s people’s lives you’re dealing with, but you have to be willing to have ideas on how to make the judicial system better and work within a budget, which I have done for 20-some years in my own practice,” he said. “You have to have a passion for the law, and I have all those. I think I’m by far the best candidate.”

his family.

He was born Aug. 18, 1935, in Aurora, the son of Gladys Johnson Scalet.

Lyle grew up in the Fox Valley and graduated from Batavia High School with the class of 1953.

Lyle played baseball for Rajah’s Colts from 1951 to 1954. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960.

On Feb. 23, 1963, he was united in marriage to Barbara Breese; they happily celebrated their 50th anniversary earlier this year. They made their home in Wasco, St. Charles and Elburn for a number of years before moving to Largo, Fla., in 2002.

Lyle worked as a bartender for a number of years at Denny’s Den, Wasco Inn and Ruby’s Half Moon. Until 1968, he worked on dairy farms in Batavia, Sycamore and Wasco. From 1968 to 1975, he was employed at the St. Charles Youth Center, then went to work at Hines Lumber Company, St. Charles, in 1977, where he remained for the next 21 years. Lyle was employed by Conte Excavating after retiring from Hines, until he and Barb moved to Largo, Fla. He was a member of the Teamsters Local #330, and in the earlier years he coached Wasco Little League baseball.

A true, blue Cowboys fan, Lyle also was a die-hard Cub fan. He loved a good game of poker, enjoyed golf, reading a good western, a trip to the boat, talking sports with the boys and having a beer with friends. He will forever be missed and never forgotten.

Lyle is survived by his loving wife, Barb of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his children, Paul (Janis) Johnson, of New York, N.Y., Peggy (David) Stover of Maple Park, Jeff (Steph) Johnson of Elgin, Dan Johnson of DeKalb and Ed (Tammi) Johnson of Woodstock; seven grandchildren, Joe Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Lance Johnson, Shana Johnson, Gabe Curl, Zak Johnson and Ayden Johnson; two stepgrandchildren, Tim (Susan) Stover and Paul (Alvina)

Board says CERT group is function of the village

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Elburn Village Board members unanimously decided that the Elburn Community Emergency Response Team should be a function of the village and CERT’s insurance should be covered by the village.

Trustee Dave Gualdoni, who works closely with the CERT group, abstained from the vote.

Elburn had been providing insurance at a cost of $1,062, but Village Administrator Erin Willret had pushed for a definition of the group’s relationship with the village.

Trustee Ethan Hastert asked Smith what an officer might be paid for such work, at time and a half. The answer was $45 an hour, which led Hastert to say that CERT provides a valuable service.

“I don’t see a reason to change what we’re doing,” Hastert said.

Before the vote, Village President Dave Anderson had pushed for a decision, telling board members that “I want to make a decision, and I want to do so one way or another.”

Trustee Jeff Walter added, “We need to continue the coverage.”

All ages are welcome. Parents can request a “no scare” tour for children, but Acosta

cautioned them from bringing young kids.

“We have seen people of all ages … just literately in terror,” she said. “It definitely can be very scary.”

The haunted house grew out of the family’s participation in the St. Charles Park District’s Gallery of Ghoulish Home Tour, Acosta said.

If done at a normal pace, tours of the haunted house take about 15 minutes, Acosta said, noting other parts of the property also are decorated.

Because Acosta and her husband own businesses and have four daughters, transforming the house into spooky grounds can be difficult, she said. But, she added, the end result is fun.

“We really love doing it, and we never have a shortage of people [who want to help],” she said. “They do it because they love doing it.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – When the Acostas first transformed their St. Charles Township home into a haunted house a few years ago, they didn’t expect it would become the attraction it now is.

“It’s anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half wait to get in,” Chris Acosta said. “We don’t know what to think of it.”

The haunted house – which includes a 14-foot castle wall facade on the front of the home, a zombie cage, gruesome scenes and costumed actors who jump out at visitors – will close for the season after this weekend.

Tollway to boost speeds on I-88 west of Route 47 the Tollway said.

That increase covers 64 miles of roadway from near Sugar Grove to Lee County.

The speed limit on the stretch of I-88 from Route 47, near Sugar Grove, to Aurora will be kept at 65 mph.

The Tollway also announced that it intends to increase the speed limit on a 15-mile stretch of Interstate 90, west of Interstate 39, near Rockford in Winnebago County, and on a six-mile segment of the Tri-State Tollway in Lake County.

The Tollway will submit

the speed limit increase requests to the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

After those organizations sign off on the proposal, the speed limits would be increased.

The Tollway intends to have the new speed limits in place in January after the new signs are posted.

Proof of residency is required in order to register a child for an Early Childhood Screening.

State law indicates that all children with qualifying disabilities between the ages of 3 and 5 years must be provided with programs appropriate to their needs.

The school district must offer an annual screening of these children in order to determine need and eligibility for services.

Eligible children must be preschool age and reside within the district.

The district will provide screening in vision and hearing, speech and language, cognitive and motor, and social and emotional.

This screening is optional.

It is not a requirement for enrolling in preschool and is not designed to determine kinder-

Thursday, the Illinois Tollway announced it intends to seek to bump up the speed limits on certain stretches of interstate highway it oversees.

Locally, the speed limit on Interstate 88 west of Route 47 could be increased to 70 mph,

by State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, to increase speed limits on most of the state’s interstate highway system from 65 mph to 70 mph.

The law has produced some confusion among various transportation agencies, including county transportation departments and the Tollway over which highways exactly would be sub-

ject to the change.

The Tollway has interpreted the law to apply to interstate highways running through predominantly rural, or “non-urban” areas.

A Tollway spokesman said the agency may also seek to increase the speed limit on I-90 from Elgin to Rockford to 70 mph.

However, the spokesman said any changes there would not be sought until after a large road reconstruction and widening project is completed on that segment of the highway in late 2014.

In explaining his vote, Hultgren noted the importance of the riverway system to the local economy.

While WRRDA will not bring direct benefits to the Tri-Cities and Kane County, it will indirectly benefit the region, he said, by supporting agriculture, manufacturing and other key industries.

The nearest river lock and dam may be dozens of miles from Kane County. But the region’s economy still will receive a boost from an expected flurry of activity to improve navigable waterways in Illinois, say supporters of new federal legislation aimed at improving the country’s river locks, dams and ports.

Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the bill known as the Water Resources Reform and Development Act. The legislation passed, 417-3.

It was supported by local congressional representatives, including U.S. Reps.

Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield; Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton; and Bill Foster, D-Naperville.

A similar bill had passed the U.S. Senate earlier this year.

WRRDA had drawn strong support across the spectrum of business, industry and politics.

Locally, the measure was supported by the Kane County Farm Bureau, said Joe White, president of the county farm bureau, who farms near Elburn and Kaneville.

“This was one of those infrastructure jobs that just needs to be done,” White said.

He said the farm bureau particularly supported funding and regulatory changes to improve the antiquated locks and dams on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers.

As much as half of the corn and other grain grown in Illinois is exported. White said a “huge chunk” of the Kane crop is shipped by barge down the Illinois River through Morris and Ottawa.

Nail A Thon raises funds to fight breast cancer

A Nail A Thon event is set for Saturday and Sunday at Well Polished Nail Spa, 228 S. Third St., Geneva. An additional $10 for every service will be charged, with that money going to the Colette A. Miles Foundation, which is devoted to the memory of a St. Charles woman who died at age 50 after battling breast cancer.

For $10, each person is given a raffle ticket, which puts them in competition for some prizes. Among them – a prize of $1,000 in products and services at the salon.

Thon and said it raised about $650. Hopes are high that the event will exceed that, as she said $600 in tickets already have been sold.

“I thought it would be a great way to do something fun and raise some money,” Maki said.

My congressional representative, Randy Hultgren, voted “no” to end the wasteful government shutdown. According to some reports, roughly $24 billion of taxpayer money was lost during the shutdown, and he wanted to keep it going.

Peter Roskam, also a Republican, voted “yes” to end the shutdown and then called on the president and Democratic members of Congress to work with his party to develop a sensible budget and improve the president’s health care law.

I am tired of my representative paying allegiance to his party’s right-wing extremists, instead of his constituents.

Mr. Roskam, will you be my representative?

Cell phones, originally bought to phone 911 when stuck in a snow ditch, now function as guilt machines for teens required to check in when getting to the party, when at the party and when

More Americans than forecast filed jobless claims last week

By MICHELLE JAMRISKO Bloomberg News WASHINGTON – More Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week as California continued to work through a backlog.

Jobless claims decreased by 12,000 to 350,000 in the week ended Oct. 19 from a revised 362,000 in the prior period, a Labor Department report showed Thursday in Washington. The median forecast of 48 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a decrease to 340,000.

Applications in California remained elevated and analysts weren’t able to determine how many nonfederal workers filed due to the government shutdown, a Labor Department spokesman said as the figures were released to the media.

Firings may gradually diminish as a backlog of claims processing in California and the end to the closure of government offices push and pull on the figures. A slower-than-expected pace of hiring in Sep-

tember may reflect companies’ hesitance to ramp up payrolls as lawmakers in Washington feuded over the budget and now prepare for the next round of negotiations.

“California and the shutdown are still going to be elevating claims numbers,” Guy Berger, an economist at RBS Securities Inc. in Stamford, Conn., said before the report.

“Layoffs are going to subside once we head to the very end of the year. It’s really a question of whether hiring can pick up.”

Another report showed the trade deficit in the U.S. was little changed in August as imports and exports stalled, indicating a loss of momentum in global economic growth.

The gap increased 0.4 percent to $38.8 billion from a revised $38.6 billion in July that was smaller than previously reported, the Commerce Department reported. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of 71 economists called for a $39.4 billion deficit.

While the claims data continued to be released during

the lapse in appropriations, the shutdown delayed the Labor Department’s September employment report and other government data releases.

Federal workers filed about 44,100 claims for jobless benefits two weeks ago, down from about 70,100 the prior period.

Those were tallied in a separate category and didn’t influence the headline reading.

The partial government shutdown this month trimmed 0.25 percentage point from fourth-quarter economic growth and cost the U.S. 120,000 jobs in October, Jason Furman, head of the Council of Economic Advisers, said at a White House briefing earlier this week.

Economists’ estimates in the Bloomberg survey for jobless claims ranged from 320,000 to 365,000 after the prior week’s previously reported 358,000.

Applications surged in prior weeks as California worked through a backlog caused by a switch in computer systems.

The four-week average of claims, a less volatile mea-

sure than the weekly figures, increased to 348,250 last week from 337,500. No states were estimated last week.

The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits decreased by 8,000 to 2.87 million in the week ended Oct. 12. The continuing claims figure does not include the number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

Those who have used up their traditional benefits and are now collecting emergency and extended payments declined by about 54,200 to 1.33 million in the week ended Oct. 5.

The unemployment rate among people eligible for benefits held at 2.2 percent in the week ended Oct. 12.

Thirty-six states and territories reported an increase in claims, while 17 reported a drop. These data are reported with a one-week lag.

Initial jobless claims reflect weekly firings and typically wane before job growth can accelerate.

The September payrolls report, released earlier this week after government offices reopened, showed a labor market that had little momentum heading into the shutdown.

Employers added fewer workers to payrolls than projected in September, Labor Department figures showed.

The addition of 148,000 workers followed a revised 193,000 gain in August that was larger than initially estimated.

Unemployment fell to 7.2 percent, the lowest level since November 2008.

October employment data are scheduled for release Nov. 8.

While companies have held back on increasing payrolls in the face of sluggish economic growth, online retailer Amazon.com is making longer-term plans to add to staff. The Seattlebased company announced this week that it plans to hire more than 1,000 full-time employees for a one-million-square-foot warehouse in Baltimore, and another 1,000 workers for two sites in Florida.

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North senior Kat Stutesman hopes to hear by Christmas whether her ambitions of attending college at a military academy will come to fruition.

Stutesman figures her two years playing varsity football with the North Stars qualify as helpful preparation.

“Being on a football team and being in basically an entire male environment, and going to a military academy like the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy or West Point, it’s the same exact deal,” said Stutesman, who is interested in becoming a pilot. “And that’s what I want to do when I’m older.”

Stutesman, who set North’s program mark for career extra points in last week’s win against Larkin, could topple North’s single-season PAT mark Saturday in North’s regular season finale at South Elgin.

Stutesman has converted 46 career point afters – breaking the old mark of 43 – and has connected on 32 this season, two behind the season record in North’s 13-year history.

Until last week’s game at Larkin, North coach Rob Pomazak said Stutesman had only missed one PAT on the season.

Pomazak said he had never coached a female football player until arriving at North before this season, but his first experience has been a delight.

“She really is probably as focused of a person as we have on our team, and I’m not just saying that,” Pomazak said. “I worked with her over the summer for some of her military training, and just the level of effort that she puts in and the direction that she has for her life is something that I wish more of our kids could learn from.”

Stutesman said she’s “always been a tomboy,” competing in taekwondo, basketball and soccer – which she still plays – growing up.

St. Charles North senior kicker Kat Stutesman practices Wednesday afternoon with her team. driver’s ed instructor, and when Stutesman heard about North being thin at kicker a couple of years ago, she started mulling the nontraditional move.

She attended the team’s camps leading up to junior year and found her niche at kicker, even if it took some of her teammates a while to warm up to the idea of a girl under the helmet.

Stutesman said her second year in the program has gone more smoothly, on and off the field.

“If anything, when I do wide receiver drills, the guys go really easy on me, which sometimes I’m kind of like ‘C’mon, just go hard, go how you actually would, get some practice in with an extra person.’ But last year it took about half the season to actually be accepted to the team,” Stutesman said.

“First day of summer camp, I remember one kid going up and saying ‘Oh, it’s really cool you’re trying for football,’ and he instantly accepted me, but I remember one of the safeties last year, I didn’t feel like he accepted me until the last game. So it was kind of in between for the entire year, but this year, everyone’s a friend.”

Aside from separate pregame dressing, Stutesman is in the mix with the boys throughout the season.

Naturally, some of the guys’ language and mannerisms have become her own.

“If it’s kind of like I’ve been having a bad day, then some of the language comes in,” Stutesman said. “But usually I’m on the sidelines, and whatever they’re saying, I usually say it just stays on the sidelines, and I’m just going to let it go over my head.

“But I grew up doing taekwondo, which is mostly a male sport, so it’s basically the same language, same kind of social interactions.”

North senior lineman Camden Cotter said Stutesman has “carried herself perfectly” and earned her place in the program’s “family.”

“I think at first she was on the team last year to be a part of something, but now she actually fits in and she has a job to do,” Cotter said. “We expect her to get that job done, and she has because she has the record and everything. As a guy who’s on the offense after we score, I’m confident to be able to come off the field and know that we’re going to get another point on the board.”

Stutesman made a field

goal last season against Streamwood and has attempted two this year but Dom Sidari kicks the team’s medium-to-long range field goals.

When it’s time for PATs, though, North turns to Stutesman, with the assistance of holder Blake Kastein.

Stutesman credited North’s offense for being prolific enough to put the program PAT record in reach. She said she believes she’s the first varsity female football player in North history, but noted there is a girl in school considering going out for the sophomore team next year as a linebacker.

She hopes her career inspires more football-loving girls to become involved at the youth level, and thinks the record she set last week lends credence that her participation was more than a novelty.

“In my college essays, I’m putting this also – you don’t know the first woman pilot to have her license, but you know the first woman to fly across the Atlantic,” Stutesman said. “That kind of deal.

If I didn’t break it, nobody would remember me in the future, but if I broke it, it’s an ‘up on the wall’ kind of thing.”

SLEEPER GAME OF THE WEEK St. Charles East at Larkin. The Saints (5-3) have struggled much of the past month, and are eager to shake off the cobwebs from last week’s ugly loss at Batavia.

The Royals (3-5, three-game losing streak) have had their own recent woes, but figure to have some extra emotional juice tonight since it will be the last game for coach Mike Scianna, who announced he’s stepping down after this season.

COACHING SPOTLIGHT Aurora Central Catholic coach Brian Casey is going against his alma mater for the last time in the foreseeable future, with the breakup of the Suburban Christian Conference at hand.

Casey attended Montini from 1997 to 2001, and started at quarterback for the Broncos as a senior.

Chargers assistant coach Tom Kero (running backs) was a high school teammate of Casey’s at Montini.

PLAYOFF WATCH St. Charles East (5-3, at Larkin), Aurora Christian (5-3, at Guerin), St. Charles North (4-4, at South Elgin), St. Francis (4-4, vs. St. Edward) and Wheaton Academy (4-4, vs. Marian Central) are the teams that need Week 9 wins to either clinch the playoffs or become playoff-eligible.

Of the 4-4 teams, St. Francis is in the best shape to squeeze in at 5-4 based on playoff points, while St. Charles North has the most cause to fret.

7 p.m. today The buzz St. Francis is one of those schools for which the playoffs have arrived a week early, with the Spartans facing a do-or-die scenario to make the postseason.

The Spartans won their first three games, then crumbled amid the SCC Blue meat grinder against Montini, Aurora Christian, Marian Central and Marmion before whipping Guerin last week to put the postseason back in sight.

“I think our kids are excited,” Spartans coach Greg Purnell said. “Even though we dropped four games in the middle of the season, we’re excited we still have a shot to get in. If we win, we’re in. That’s the thing we feel good about. We’re just a .500 football team the last week of the season fighting for our lives.”

Marquee matchup St. Francis running back James Butler vs.

St. Edward running back Davontae Elam.

Elam (1,268 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns) and Butler (1,090 yards, 17 TDs) are two of the top running backs in the western suburbs, and both are receiving Division I recruiting interest.

Butler has drawn recruiting attention from programs such as Iowa and Purdue, while Elam has garnered interest from Northern Illinois, South Dakota State and others, according to Green Wave coach Mike Rolando.

X-factor Purnell said workhorse receiver/running back/safety Steven Fassnacht will be a game-time decision after spraining his neck two weeks ago against Marmion.

Fassnacht missed last week’s 56-7 drubbing of Guerin.

If Fassnacht can’t go or is limited,

Purnell said juniors Jack Ahern, TJ Jackson and Mike Shaw will continue to play larger roles.

Best-case scenario for the Green Wave Rolando is confident his team will make the Class 4A playoff field even with a loss, but he considers competing well against a potential 5A playoff program such as St. Francis a valuable measuring stick of what the Green Wave are capable of in the weeks ahead.

Leaving Kuhn Memorial Field tonight with a win – or even a highly competitive loss – could be the springboard into the playoffs the Green Wave seek. St. Ed should also benefit from trying to match the sense of purpose of a desperate Spartans team.

“We had our back against the wall for three weeks straight,” said Rolando, whose team started 2-2 after a disappointing Week 4 loss to IC Catholic Prep.

“It makes you play better, it makes you play harder. … I’m sure the Francis kids are feeling that way.”

St. Ed’s running game is among the most productive in the state. In addition to Elam, Mikey Castoro (487 rushing yards) and Dwayne Allen (430) have helped the Green Wave run for 2,367 yards behind an offensive line that features a pair of threeyear stalwarts, left tackle Zach West and right guard Collin Holte.

Best-case scenario for the Spartans St. Francis seems to have kicked its midseason bugaboo of slow starts, which looms large tonight with the Green Wave a tricky team to come back on consider-

ing their ability to maintain possession and drain the clock.

Both teams are looking to flesh out their offenses by giving defenses something to ponder in the passing game, and, even without Fassnacht, Spartans quarterback Zach Prociuk has several targets to choose from in towering receiver Adam Hart (11 receptions, 123 yards), Matt Hanson (nine receptions, 179 yards) and Butler (eight receptions, 111 yards).

While St. Francis has abandoned the Wing-T this season, Rolando said dealing with the Spartans’ more multiple offense doesn’t require a drastic change in approach.

“They may be in a a different formation, in a different look, but it’s still Greg Purnell football,” Rolando said. “He’s a lot like us. He’s going to run the ball first.

He’s going to throw when they have to throw, when pressed into it, but if the running game is working, you’re not going to see him go away from it.”

The Spartans haven’t risen to the occasion in big games so far this season, but this team has too much ability not to make the playoffs. Last year’s Spartans were shut out at 5-4 but St. Francis’ strength of schedule is better this year, making the Spartans a virtual lock to make it with a win.

“We added Plainfield South to our schedule, a team we thought was going to be pretty good,” Purnell said. “They are, and they’ve given us some playoff points, and that will help. We’ve got to take care of business for ourselves. If we we don’t win, we don’t deserve to get in.”

The skinny: Batavia has been one of the hottest teams in the state since a Week 2 loss to Richards, scoring 44 or more points in blowout wins each of the past six weeks. That stretch includes routs against the Bulldogs’ closest competition in the UEC River, Geneva, St. Charles North

and St. Charles East. The arrival of winless Elgin should allow for ample, senior night playing time for Bulldogs veterans as Batavia eyes an outright UEC River three-peat. Batavia coach Dennis Piron said the Bulldogs’ defense is flourishing without the need to blitz. “We can [blitz] if we have to, I think, but our front can put incredible pressure on people,” Piron said. “It allow us to [play] max coverage, but when we do blitz, I think we’re really an explosive group.” Quarterback Micah

The skinny: Geneva has allowed 20 or more points to each of its eight opponents, but Vikings coach Rob Wicinski doesn’t get huffy about needing to win high-scoring games. His years of clamoring for shutouts are over, based on how skillful most offenses are in this era. “We kind of go into the game, we’ll give up a touchdown a quarter, and we’re a little over that, but if you can give one touchdown a quarter, you have a chance to win the game, so that’s kind of the mentality,” Wicinski said. “If we don’t give one up that quarter, you’re ahead of the game.” Geneva’s defense struggled more than usual last week at Metea, but what has turned into an excellent Vikings offense carried the day for the team’s fifth straight win. Wicinski said the focus heading toward the playoffs is more explosion coming off the ball rather than attempting any dramatic, late-season tinkering. “Defensively and offensively, we are who we are,” Wicinski said. “We found out through bad experiences when you do try to change, it’s even more of a cluster than what you had before.”

Extra point: Leading up to senior night at Burgess Field, Wicinski saluted a relatively small senior class that has proven resilient after struggling at the lower levels. “I’m really proud of the way they’ve stuck together and made it happen,” Wicinski said. “I think they’re thrilled to death. If this senior group can get to the playoffs, there’s not a senior group we have at Geneva that can’t get to the playoffs.”

The skinny: Saints senior quarterback Jimmy Mitchell (1,888 passing yards) has a 2,000-yard passing season within his sights tonight as East seeks a playoff-clinching sixth win.

Mitchell has thrown for 22 touchdowns to go with six interceptions. While scoring points was problematic in last week’s loss at Batavia, a leaky and injury-strained defense has perhaps been the larger issue as the Saints have dropped three of their last five games. Larkin is 0-3 this season against Tri-Cities opposition, with the only close game coming in a Week 4 meeting with Geneva, won by the Vikings, 41-34. Even if the Saints fall prey to an upset in Elgin, with 37 playoff points entering play tonight,

The skinny: North’s playoff points (30 entering Week 9) have been dented by Plainfield Central – a six-win, playoff team last season – being 0-8 this year. Between Plainfield Central, Elgin and Streamwood, that’s three North opponents with a combined one win. Still, North coach Rob Pomazak hasn’t abandoned hope that a win against South Elgin could be enough to earn North its first playoff trip since 2009. If not, North would at least finish over .500. “I think it’s a good stepping-stone for us, if we can get over the hump and get back to being a winning program,” Pomazak said. “You can’t control the numbers game, it is what it is. To be playoff-eligible and not make it would be disappointing but to be playoff-eligible, period, not every team gets that opportunity, and I told the guys that.” Pomazak liked the way QB Erik Miller directed the offense in the Larkin win. “I thought Erik in particular played his best game of his career,” Pomazak said. “If we can get that Erik Miller coming out on Saturday, we’re a tough team. … And then on the other end, kids finishing plays off. It takes two. The sophomore, John LeGare, on the two deep balls, did a great job, and Garrett (Johnson) did a great job on the one ball over the middle, so we need that.”

Extra point: North aims to change up its loss-win, loss-win pattern that has held up throughout the season’s first eight weeks.

Kaneland (7-1, 3-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) at Morris (3-5, 1-3 NI Big 12 East), 7:15 p.m. today The skinny: While the season-ending ACL injury to standout Kaneland running back Jesse Balluff naturally commanded more attention, a more recent ACL blowout for starting center Zach Thielk also is posing hardship for the Knights’ offense. Alex Snyder moved from right guard to center while Sam Bower slotted in for Snyder.

“That’s been a challenge,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “We moved Snyder over there and he’s had two games under his belt now. We’re hoping thing are going to jell up front.

We’ve had to shuffle kids quite a bit this year so that was a challenge and had something to do with our penalties with the snap of the ball [against Sycamore].” After falling at Sycamore, the Knights are attempting to move on from a regular season loss for the first

time since the 2009 season. Fedderly said there was initial anger and frustration after the loss but he thinks he has a mature enough group for the Knights to respond constructively at Morris, which brightened its ailing spirits last week by upsetting Rochelle.

Extra point: A Kaneland win at Morris coupled with a Sycamore loss at 5-3 Yorkville would give the Knights a piece of the NI Big 12 East regular season title.

Marmion (6-2, 4-2 SCC Blue) at Walther Lutheran (2-6, 2-4 SCC Gold), 1 p.m. Saturday Last week: Marmion lost to Aurora Central Catholic, 13-12; Walther Lutheran lost to IC Catholic Prep, 41-12.

The skinny: Marmion coach Dan Thorpe and Co. have challenged Cadets running backs this week after a frustrating offensive showing at ACC that Thorpe partially credited to the Chargers’ defense. “I would say half and half,” Thorpe said. “They did a great job open-field tackling. We had running backs pop through, but they dropped them in their tracks, and we preach all the time, we can only block 10.” The ACC loss could cost Marmion a first-round home playoff game in the 6A draw, though 7-2 sometimes is enough to start at home, which Thorpe considers “very crucial.”

Extra point: With a 2013 classification enrollment of 327, Walther Lutheran is the smallest football school in the SCC.

The skinny: Chargers coach Brian Casey and his staff have done their best to make sure ACC doesn’t coast to the finish after clinching the playoffs last week with the emotional win over Marmion. “I’ve always kind of learned after a big win like that, the next week of practice has to be pretty brutal to get them back to earth, and I think we’ve had to do a little bit of that,” Casey said. Casey hailed the Chargers’ offensive line for allowing ACC to control clock and follow through on the team’s template for beating a talented opponent. Juggernaut Montini’s arrival tonight only ups the ante on that mindset.

Extra point: ACC enters Week 9 tied with IC Catholic Prep at 4-2 atop the SCC Gold. Crossovers count in the conference, so ACC likely would need to upset Montini to earn a share of the conference since IC Catholic plays struggling Chicago Christian tonight.

Aurora Christian (5-3, 3-3 SCC Blue) at Guerin (2-6, 0-6 SCC Gold), 1 p.m. Saturday Last week: Aurora Christian lost to Montini, 49-0; Guerin lost to St. Francis, 56-7.

The skinny: Aurora Christian will remain severely short-handed by injury this week, according to Eagles coach Don Beebe, but Beebe remains pleased that the team has “kept our togetherness and chemistry throughout these tough times.” The Eagles have lost three straight after starting 5-0, while Guerin has dropped six in a row.

Extra point: The closest Guerin has come in SCC play was a 28-14, Week 5 loss to Chicago Christian (2-6).

There’s a lot of teams right now who know they’re not in the playoffs, and we’re very fortunate to know we have something to play for in Week 9.”

Extra point: Last week’s 21-point win against Chicago Christian was the closest game the Warriors have been involved in all season.

In consolation play, Hess and Hazel knocked off Abby and Caroline Witkowski from Loyola Academy, 6-3, 7-5, but were eliminated from the tournament with a tough three-set loss to Fenwick’s Dana Balk and Anna Sprajcer, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Like Einck, the Batavia doubles team of Jenny Mizikar and Amelia Cogan advanced to the third round of the championship bracket before being dropped into the consolation bracket with a loss to a 5-8 seed. The two Bulldogs started their day at Rolling Meadows with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tiffany Bui and Janine Urgello from Downers Grove South, then whitewashed Mattoon’s Kristen Doty and Katie Ervin in a pair of sets.

“We played awesome,” Mizikar said. “Both of us together did our best.”

In the third round, the Batavia tandem lost a first-set tiebreaker to Edwardsville’s Mallory Abert and Megan LaRose and trailed 2-0 in the second set before rallying for a 6-3 victory to force a third set.

The Bulldogs fell behind 5-0 in the tiebreaker, pulled back to within 5-3, but lost the final two points of the match.

“I definitely think it was one of our closest, most intense matches of the season,” Mizikar said. “We definitely played our ‘A’ game. We made mistakes here and there, but we also had some really good points and went back and forth with some really good volleys and rallies.”

The pair will be back in action today in the consolation bracket at Rolling Meadows.

“We’re going to go back to the hotel tonight and we’re going to forget about this match,” Cogan said. “We’re going to go in tomorrow – clean slate.

This match didn’t happen. We played a great match, and so did Edwardsville.”

Batavia’s other state qualifiers – Nora McClure in singles and the doubles team of Brooke LeFevre and Sydnee Unterberg each – went 0-2 on the day.

Kaneland’s state competitors went a combined 6-2 on the day.

PALATINE – Lexie Petrovic struck a hard line-drive shot toward Geneva junior Kirby Einck, who was in good position to return the volley. The ball hit the net cord, seemed to balance on top of it for a moment, then fell on Einck’s side of the net.

It was that kind of match for Einck on Thursday in the third round of the championship bracket of the IHSA Girls Tennis State Tournament at Palatine High School. Petrovic, a Nazareth Academy senior and a 5-8 seed, sent Einck into the tournament’s consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

“I felt like I got a lot of balls back,” Einck said. “She’s a great player. … She made [every shot] today. There’s not much I can do about it. I’m pretty pleased with the way I played.”

Despite cold and windy conditions, Einck opened the day in strong fashion, shutting out Jasmine Owens of Oak Park-River Forest, then dispatching Carla O’Bryne of St. Ignatius, 6-3, 6-0.

“The first two matches, it was all about who could judge the wind better,” Einck said.

“My second match, she was a tough player. I was able to play my game and just really read the wind better is what it came down to.”

Einck said battling the elements was as difficult as trying to beat the competition.

“It’s like there’s a third player out there,” she said. “You’ve got the wind coming at you and then you’ve got the cold. Your hands are numb. You can’t really feel the ball. It’s definitely tough, but it makes you feel so much better when you can win in these types of conditions.”

Geneva’s other singles entrant, freshman Grace Krueger, went 1-2 on the day, while the Vikings’ doubles team of Margo Hess and Emma Hazel split four matches.

The Kaneland girls came back nicely in consolation play with three straight-set victories.

Playing at Rolling Meadows, the Rosary doubles team of Megan Conlin and Andrea Goyao opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Mykennah Allen and Alexis Halbrook of Shelbyville.

A 6-3, 6-4 loss to 9-16 seed Martina Dragoytchev and Jessica Chepurda of Glenbrook South sent the Royals’ duo into consolation play, where they won in straight sets over Bui and Urgello to set up a meeting with familiar rivals, IMSA’s Nahee Park and Emily Ling.

“This is our fourth time meeting,” said Goyao, a senior. “We played them in singles and doubles this year and we’ve always been back and forth.”

This meeting was no exception. After winning the opening set, Conlin and Goyao fell behind 5-2 in the second set.

The pair rallied to force a tiebreaker, which they led, 5-1.

Park and Ling managed to pull back even at 6, but Conlin and Goyao won the final two points.

“So we’ll be back here tomorrow,” said Conlin, a senior. “Overall, we played our hearts out today.”

Drendel returns home for Kaneland Spikefest Former Kaneland outside hitter Kelsey Drendel coaches the Normal West girls volleyball team these days, so her return home for Saturday’s Kaneland Spikefest will be both business and pleasure.

First, there’s the business side: “Boom, boom. Get it done with at the end of the season and get some playing in before regionals,” Drendel said.

Then there’s its complement, pleasure: “I’m excited to come and play at Kaneland again,” Drendel said.

“I feel like it’s going to be bittersweet going back when maybe even a year or two ago it was like, ‘Wow, I wish I had a job closer to home.’ “ Drendel finds herself far more attached to central Illinois than when she joined Normal West as a physical education, health and driver’s education teacher three years ago. Now in her second season at the helm of the Wildcats, who on Tuesday clinched the Big 12 Conference title, Drendel has emerged from the early adulthood anxiety of settling away from home with newfound friends and perspective.

Normal West will take on the host Knights and Geneva among other teams in the one-day, round-robin format, completing a recent flirtation with Chronicle Country.

Normal West met St. Charles North in the Minooka Invitational finals this past weekend, with the North Stars winning, 25-17, 25-16.

A 2005 Kaneland graduate, Drendel played under Kris Weiss and later was a freshman coach when Todd Weimer led the program.

Drendel is not as familiar with first-year Knights coach Kerri McCastland, but knows McCastland won’t have to give her players a history lesson.

Drendel’s twin brother, Andy, coaches Kaneland’s pole vaulters and serves as public address announcer during home boys basketball games. Their father, Ralph, was a longtime Kaneland teacher and coach who

gained induction into the athletic wing of the school’s hall of fame in May. What’s more, older sister Kimmi coaches freshman volleyball at Rolling Meadows.

Drendel’s mother, Paula, is a former coach, too, making shop talk quite comfortable among the family.

“They don’t even need to know volleyball,” Drendel Kelsey Drendel said. “They’re natural coaches. Just give different ideas that I feel like I have a very good sounding board at home, that they’re going to give me honest advice and not only what I want to hear.”

Drendel still remembers watching her dad coach Knights track athletes at the state meet as a young girl.

There are many other snapshots she holds dear.

“It will be fun to be back in the gym,” Drendel said.

That might as well be her family’s motto.

Just 18 players registered for the 2013-14 season, meaning the program is fielding only a varsity team. The co-op of players from St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Batavia, Geneva and Kaneland also had a JV team in its inaugural season of 2012-13.

“It wasn’t that they decided to go to another team, it’s just that some of our seniors got senioritis and decided to sit out this year,” club president Judy Bondarowicz said.

“We’re encouraged that we’ll be back to having two teams next year.”

WHAT WE LEARNED LAST WEEK ...

Sharing’s not so bad. As St. Charles East and St. Charles North both won Tuesday, both teams were at peace with the tie for the Upstate Eight Conference River Division crown that created. Batavia and Geneva were in the tile hunt for most of the season, as well. “It was a lot of fun to see which teams won, who got farther and everything,” East sophomore middle hitter Sydney Urban said.

WHAT WE’LL LEARN IN THE WEEK AHEAD ...

Which Kane County Chronicle-area teams emerge with regional championships. In 4A, Batavia and Geneva could be on course for a clash in the Addison Trail Regional title match. In 3A, frequent postseason combatants Kaneland and Burlington Central are on opposite courses. The Knights head south to Sandwich while the Rockets travel to Genoa-Kingston.

Streaking North ‘hungry for more’ St. Charles North coach Lindsey Hawkins sensed a no-nonsense professionalism in players from the time fall workouts started.

The intensity wavered slightly as a handful of losses pocked the transition from September to October, but the 28-5 North Stars picked things up again before long. The team has not lost a match or a game since absorbing a road sweep at Waubonsie Valley on Oct. 3.

That stretch includes two of North’s three tournament titles this fall, at Schaumburg and at Minooka.

“I can just tell the girls are hungry for more wins, so that’s a really good thing to see out of them,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said. “They come in every day and practice and really want to challenge themselves and challenge each other. That’s the mentality that you have to have it you want to go far in the playoffs.”

North, which shared the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title with St. Charles East, will have had a week off before its postseason opener against either Willowbrook or Fenton in Tuesday’s opening Class 4A South Elgin Regional semifinal.

“Definitely have a lot to work on over the next couple days at practice,” Hawkins said. Really getting into the mindset of postseason. Especially in our area, it seems like it’s anyone’s game nowadays. … We’re just trying to work on getting better and work out some of the kinks that we have in our game, hope that we show up to play.”

North already has earned its most single-season victories under Hawkins and has won three regionals since she took over in 2009.

Saints keep coming together No middles, no worries. At least for now.

East rallied from a three-game loss at North in September to tie its crosstown rivals for the conference title.

Ashley Bullock missed much of that run because of injuries.

“I’m so happy. With everyone out right now, I think we’re doing a great job,” East libero Anne Hughes said. “That makes us more confident that when we get everyone back in, we’ll be even better.”

East coach Jennie Kull is optimistic the team will be in full health when the postseason starts.

Central concerns Burlington Central aspires to return home for a 3A sectional in the first week of November. Should that occur, the Rockets can credit a lesson they relearned at the end of October.

While BC topped Marengo on its senior night this week, it was surprised to need three games to do so. The Indians posed a threat after Central, seeking at

least a share of the Big Northern East Conference title with Richmond-Burton, has handled much of the league with relative ease.

“It’s going to be a battle,” Rockets coach Marv Leavitt said. “Every match from now on is going to be a battle and we have to come ready. If we don’t come ready, we’ll have a pretty short postseason. If we come ready, we can do well.”

Senior libero Allie O’Reilly, who opened her varsity career as a setter, recently committed to Illinois-Chicago, picking the Flames among a few other NCAA Division I offers.

“She just liked being close to home and liked the program at UIC, so I think she’s very happy to have this opportunity,” Leavitt said.

Recalling St. Charles’ good old days, other goodies Transportation these days is, for me, a scarce commodity.

From the line in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” I depend on the generosity of friends (and cousins).

The Grozis’ and the McFarland’s are the greatest to provide a carriage ride for me, the wheelchair and the handicap sticker to the designated event – and more than once to retrieve a lost slipper. (The zebra truck, our only vehicle now, is a one man operation that often smells like a skunk or conceals a homeless reptile or a cache of Twinkie wrappers.)

Clearly my outside ventures are limited for one reason or another.

So, when Bea Grigo announced that Sarah Circle at our church had invited Charles (Charlie) Brown to talk to us

about aspects of St. Charles history seen through his eyes that road trip became a priority. Not to mention that I was listed as co-hostess, which meant gathering the traditional yummy dessert buffet and charming table décor.

Please note that Barb Traver did everything, and Sylvia Wennlund made the coffee. I did provide a scrawny yet charming potted plant. The meeting was almost mandatory at that point, and the program was as rewarding as anticipated.

Mr. Brown identified himself by giving his birthdate, which established his credibility (old enough to have been there and hearty enough to remember). Then he added to his identity by framing his long time association with the Klick and Worthley Pharmacy, which

The format was question and answer with questions from those brought up in town and many who were brought up and lived elsewhere, which made for some thought-provoking questions.

He described Pottawatomie Park and the swimming pool and the amenities, such as the baseball diamond, which were brought about by the WPA. One questioner asked if it was true that, at one time, there had been a sign meant to exclude certain groups. Yes, indeed.

I ratified his recall with my own recall, and how abhorrent that and other prejudices would seem today. Hopefully this sense of how our town has matured in the context of social issues is a strong factor in how we feel distinguished as a good place to live!

Here’s a few more teasers from Charlie for your memory bank. Remember “Heck” Johnson who collected Fox River clam shells?

Recall when the police department was led by “Skinny” Covalsky and all the policemen knew your name – and vice versa? When the fire department was all volunteers who were summoned by the siren? The abundance of farms close to town and the Saturdays when the farmers came to town?

An inquiry that a lifelong

resident probably took for granted – Little Woods School, Little Woods Store, etc. Was there a family named “Little” (as in Leroy Oakes) or was there a small forest in the area? Perhaps Laura Ingalls Wilder had an influence?

What do you remember; what is your question? Think about it.

Talk to Charles Brown or the historical society, which, of course, used to be a Texaco Station where gas was pumped by a guy who checked the oil and washed the windshield.

Audi raises pleasure bar with Q5 The temptation exists.

Instead of one, why not buy two of them, one for the garage and the other for the driveway. That way, if someone in the family is off shopping in one, there is the other to use.

Audi’s Q5 is one of those types of special vehicles. Almost all luxury manufacturers have one of these in the lineup, notably Cadillac, Infiniti, Acura, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and, of course, Audi.

They are midsize sport utilities loaded to the hilt with electronic and power devices, easy to maneuver, restful to drive, somewhat economical and simply all-around appealing.

Unfortunately, they cost lots of money with pricing in the $40,000 to $65,000 range.

That was the case with the recently tested 2014 Audi Q5. It carried a suggested manufacturer’s price of $46,500 but delivery and an option package raised the total to $50,000. Delivery is an additional $895. The $3,500 option package included a navigation system with voice control, an upgrade sound system to include high definition radio and a DVD player, a color instead of black and white information screen and a rearview camera.

Over and above the usual power features (four express up and down windows, door locks, exterior heated foldable mirrors, front leather seats), the Q5 came with power panoramic (over two rows) sunroof, liftgate and rear folding seats. The controls to folding or raising the rear seats are just inside the carpeted and lighted cargo area. The liftgate can be operated by remote key fob or a control on the driver’s door panel. The liftgate opens and closes manually as well.

The 3-liter, 240-horsepower diesel V6 engine in the 2014 Audi Q5 is mated to an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper and the like, the powerplant is worth a paragraph or two.

The 2014 Audi Q5 has a 3-liter, 240-horsepower TDI diesel as well as gasoline 2- and 3-liter powerplants. The diesel and gasoline engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The beauty of the diesel is that it can average up to 30 percent better mileage than a gasoline engine. During a test week in the 2014 diesel Q5, average fuel consumption was 26.8 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. Even so, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the tested diesel’s combined mpg was not 30 percent better than

an untested gasoline engine Q5.

The EPA rates the 2-liter at 23 mpg and the gasoline 3-liter at 21 mpg in combined city and highway driving. This diesel vehicle weighs 4,475 pounds and the gas pedal was put to liberal use during the testing period, which makes the mpg even more remarkable.

An automatic start-stop system gives a boost, although negligible, to fuel economy figures.

The Q5’s engine stops when the vehicle does, presumably saving on fuel at signal lights which are red longer than normal. The engine pops back into action when the driver’s foot is taken off the brake and placed on the gas pedal.

Diesel fuel is readily available, especially in the Chicago-Rockford-Milwaukee areas.

The tank holds 19.8 gallons.

The ride is high, quiet and, with a five-link (front) and trap-

ezoidal-link (rear) suspension system including coil springs, large gas shocks and stabilizer bars, a delight. It will take a deep hole or rut to send this suspension system into convulsions.

Brakes are discs, 13.6 inches in front and 13 inches in the rear, which contribute, from a speed of 60 miles per hour, to a stopping distance of about 130 feet. Besides capable brakes, safety elements include traction and stability controls, an antilock braking system, front, side and overhead airbags, tethers and anchors for child seats, and safety belts with pretensioners and force limiters.

This diesel came relatively loaded with 19-inch P235 tires mounted on alloy wheels, xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, keyless start and entry, a 10-speaker sound system with CD and MP3 playback,

SiriusXM satellite radio, iPod integration and Bluetooth. There are aluminum door sill inlays, automatic dimming rearview mirror with an embedded digital compass, dual front sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors, memory setting for the driver’s seat, a sliding split and fold rear seat with pass-through and adjustable recline, heated and power front seats, exterior foldable mirrors and door locks, automatic windshield wipers that sense rain, front and rear fog lights, dual flat bottom exhaust outlets with polished tips and heated windshield washer nozzles.

TDI is a Volkswagen AG registered trademark. It stands for turbocharged direct injection. This means injectors spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Older diesels had a less responsive pre-combustion chamber. Direct injection in the TDI allows the turbocharger to force increased air into the six intercooled cylinders. The result is economy, better torque and efficiency.

Diesel engines are much simpler and economical but they can cost more than a gasoline powerplant due to the emission system’s pollution cleansing devices necessary to meet national air quality standards. Diesels should last longer than gasoline engines. In the long run, when it comes to fuel usage, they will save money.

There might be temporary confusion in the marketplace with the Audi Q5 as Infiniti has embarked on a program of renaming its vehicles with the letter Q or QX followed by a number. The QX50, for example, is an Infiniti product that costs $35,800 in its AWD apparel. The $40,000 to $50,000 QX60 better approximates the Audi Q5 in engine and trim appointments. No matter a Q or a QX, these vehicles are several that exist in that rarified air of extremely pleasurable midsize SUVs.

‘Bad Grandpa’ – call of the vile

By BOB TREMBLAY More Content Now We’ve had “Bad Santa,” “Bad Lieutenant” and “Bad Teacher.” Now we have “Bad Grandpa.” What’s next? “Bad Rabbi”? I can already see the movie poster’s tagline: “Don’t miss this bris.” But I digress.

“Bad Grandpa” comes from the deranged minds of the “Jackass” gang – filmmakers who never met a vulgar sight gag they didn’t like. They are their own gross national product.

Like their previous films, they operate on the spaghetti principle – throw enough strands of pasta on a refrigerator door and some are bound to stick. So, what do we have here, besides a refrigerator door covered with spaghetti? We have a movie that bats around .300 in the laugh-out-loud category. That kind of average can win batting titles in professional baseball. As for winning any Academy Awards, well, even considering that possibility is hilarious. That said, if there’s ever a category for most repugnant movie of the year, “Bad Grandpa” would be in the running. And the filmmakers would be proud to be nominated.

Unlike their previous films, which concentrated on abusing bodies in truly demented ways, the filmmakers in “Bad Grandpa” take the “Borat” route with actor Johnny Knoxville dressed up like an old man and acting inappropriately in front of unsuspecting people. Not that the movie totally eschews body abuse.

Before we continue, some words of warning. If you didn’t like the “Jackass” films, you’re not likely to enjoy this one. And if you don’t like sophomoric,

“Borat” is a sophisticated, nuanced comedy compared to “Bad Grandpa.” That said, when gramps gets really bad, he gets really funny.

The film actually has a plot, though it acts more as a set-up for gags than a vehicle for anything cinematically meaningful. When the movie opens, Irving Zisman (Knoxville) is told that his wife has just died. Instead of crying, he guffaws and says to the befuddled woman sitting next to him, “I thought she’d never die.”

Irving is next seen at his wife’s funeral. Let’s just say it doesn’t go smoothly, especially when his crackhead daughter shows up before being sent to jail.

As a result, Irving gets put in charge of his 8-yearold grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll) whom he has to drive from Nebraska to North Carolina to unite him with his deadbeat drug-addled dad.

Irving, who had set his sights on nonstop carousing, is not pleased with this arrange-

ment.

So, a road movie commences with Irving behaving in a way that would not endear him to the AARP crowd. In one scene, he has sex with a vending machine.

Thank goodness the film warns the audience not to try to duplicate its stunts. In another scene, he tries to get rid of Billy by putting him in a box and shipping him to his father.

The film’s best scenes – well, its most outrageous scenes – have Irving going to a male strip club, Irving having issues with a bodily function and Billy competing in a child beauty pageant.

The laughs come not just from the tastelessness of this humor, but from the reactions of the people looking on either stupefied or repulsed.

The comedy that doesn’t rely on sight gags misses more than it hits, especially when it involves Billy whose cherubic face belies a mischievous mind.

The scene where he tries

to foist himself as a son on a complete stranger borders on cringe-inducing. Ditto for the scene involving the Guardians of the Children, a biker group dedicated to helping abused children who don’t appreciate Billy’s abusive father. Sorry, but child abuse isn’t funny. The script by director Jeff Tremaine, Knoxville and Spike Jonze does better with crass sexual innuendos.

On the thespian front, Knoxville may move around a little too spryly for an old man, but he plays perversity with perfection, and he does form a weird kind of chemistry with Nicoll.

As for the direction, Tremaine won’t be confused with Truffaut anytime soon.

Some scenes simply end with no resolution. One can assume that’s because they had lost their comic edge. Still, let them play out until then.

Case in point, the shoplifting scene where the store owner angrily confronts Irving after he exits the store with a loaf of bread stuffed down his pants.

Fans of occasionally grainy film stock, however, will be happy.

More irritating is the copout ending. Think Irving and Billy will eventually become friends? Like this film needs two minutes of feel-goodness after 90 minutes of depravity?

“Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” – that’s the film’s full title – isn’t even remotely a good movie. It’s simply a film that will do anything, and I mean anything, to elicit a laugh. And that they do for an audience whose sense of humor is no stranger to the gutter.

• “Bad Grandpa” runs 92 minutes and is rated R. It stars Johnny Knoxville and Jackson Nicoll. Grade: B

However, as her due date nears and we start talking about the birth, hospital, etc., I’m getting nervous and anxious. I’m worried, I guess, that something will happen to my wife and I won’t be able to cope with everything.

You can find your way out of ‘almost depression’ Dear Doctor K: Recently I’ve been feeling sad and tired. My doctor doesn’t think I’m depressed, but I know something’s not right. What could it be?

Dear Reader: Doctors typically define diseases by how they appear in their most extreme form.

I call it the “tip of the iceberg” phenomenon. For example, you don’t have diabetes until your blood sugar reaches a certain level. You don’t have lupus until you have a certain combination of symptoms, physical examination and laboratory abnormalities.

The same with multiple sclerosis.

Yet lots of people have “pre-diabetes”: Their blood sugar levels are not high enough to qualify for the diagnosis of diabetes, but they have a higher risk than those without “pre-diabetes” to develop the disease in the future.

And many people have illnesses with some feature of lupus or multiple sclerosis. Sometimes they go on to develop the fullblown disease, and sometimes not.

The same is true with depression. In between a state of positive well-being and full-blown major depression lies a large gray area of persistent negative mood. A newly emerging term for this gray area is “almost depression.”

If you are almost depressed, you experience some symptoms

Here’s a quick quiz to help determine whether you’re almost depressed. Check all statements that describe how you’ve been feeling in the past month: • I’m frustrated over little things that don’t usually bother me.

• Nothing tastes very good these days.

• I’d like to just “stop the world” and get off for a while.

• Nothing seems very funny to me.

• Nothing seems very interesting or exciting to me lately.

• My fuse seems shorter than

it used to be, and I get easily irritated.

• I’m not as interested in having sex as I used to be.

• I’d really like just to be left alone.

• I have trouble concentrating on a book or TV show.

• I just feel tired all the time for no reason.

If you checked off two or more statements, you may fall somewhere on the depression spectrum.

daughter’s relationship Dr. Wallace: I’m 20 and work full time in a beauty salon. The guy I am dating, and hope to marry, is 23. He is divorced and has twin sons who live with their mother.

He is a college graduate and is now teaching seventh grade math and science. I’ve been out with quite a few guys, but this one is a keeper.

He is very special and I feel exhilarated whenever I’m with him. He is a perfect gentleman and treats me like a lady.

Meeting this guy was the best thing that ever happened to me.

My problem is that I still live at home with my parents, who are not happy that I’m dating a guy who is divorced and the father of two children. End the talk by telling Mom and Dad you love them very much and need them to trust your judgment about your boyfriend.

Whenever possible, have your parents spend time with the two of you.

Dear Nameless: I agree. You should always feel comfortable in your own home and that obviously isn’t possible when your ex is hanging around. Your mother’s relationship with your ex borders on the inappropriate. If she wants to communicate with him, she should do so by telephone or email – and leave you out of it. However, I can’t understand her purpose in staying in touch with him.

Let’s assume that South is in four spades and West leads a diamond. East wins with his 10 and continues with the diamond ace. How should South continue after ruffing?

The auction is difficult. South might rebid three clubs, not two hearts, because his hearts are so weak – but we love majors.

North’s three diamonds is a game-forcing cue-bid. Then, when South shows club support, North might well bid game in that suit.

Five clubs makes unless East leads a trump, which is feasible when South shows a three-suited hand. But if East starts with the diamond ace before shifting to a club, North wins in his hand, ruffs a diamond in the dummy (South), plays a heart to his ace, ruffs another diamond, leads a heart to the king, draws trumps, tries unsuccessfully to drop the spade queen and claims, conceding one heart.

In four spades, South should plan on losing two spades and one diamond. He draws two rounds of trumps and turns to the clubs. West ruffs the third round and leads a diamond, but South ruffs, plays a heart to the king and discards a heart on the next club. The contract makes.

Did you notice that East missed a nigh-impossible defense? If he had shifted to a heart at trick two, it would have removed a key dummy entry. Try it and see.

LEGAL NOTICE/PUBLIC NOTICE City of St. Charles Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Notice is hereby given that the City of St. Charles Board of Fire and Police Commissioners ("Board"), on the 9th day of day of September 2013 passed and approved amendments to the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, Chapter IV, Section 1 General, Section 2 - Police Department and Section 3 - Promotional Testing Fire Department as follows: CHAPTER IV - PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS SECTION 1 - GENERAL. The Board, by its rules, shall provide for promotion in the Police and Fire Departments on the basis of ascertained merit and seniority in service and examination, and shall provide in all cases, where it is practicable, that vacancies shall be filled by promotion. All examinations for promotion shall be competitive among such members of the next lower rank as desire to submit themselves to examination. The method of examination and the rules governing examinations for promotion are specified below. For the purpose of determining that a vacancy exists, the Board must have received notice from the appropriate corporate authorities to fill an existing vacancy prior to the date the name(s) are to be stricken from a promotional eligibility register.

SECTION 2 - POLICE DEPARTMENT Candidates for promotion must have served a minimum of five (5) full years of certified service as a full time law enforcement officer at a lower rank prior to the written test being administered in order to be eligible to test for promotion to the next higher rank. All promotions within the police department shall be made from the three (3) individuals having the highest ranking at the time of the promotional opening, and where there are less than three (3) names on the promotional eligibility register, as originally posted, or remaining thereon after appointments have been made there from, appointments to fill existing vacancies shall be made from those names or the name remaining on the promotional register. The Board shall strike off the names of candidates for promotional appointment after they have remained thereon for more than three (3) years, provided there is no vacancy existing which can be filled from the promotional register.

Each weighted component of the examination process shall be based upon a scale of 1 to 100. a) The final Promotional Examination score for positions within the police department shall be determined as follows: Examination

30% * Test (to be created and customized specific to the City of St. Charles using department directives, City codes, personnel policy manual and one reference book) Oral Interview w/BFPC 40% * Departmental Merit and Efficiency 20% (Chief's Points) b) In the event no candidate from the immediate next lower rank qualifies for promotion, the Board in determining next in order of rank in promotional examinations herewith determines a policy of extending the examination successively through all the orders of rank in the services in an endeavor to qualify suitable eligible or eligibles for the vacancy or vacancies existing before extending the examination to the general public. c) Candidates who are otherwise qualified and have timely requested credit for prior military service shall be granted veterans preference points as provided by state statute.

TOTAL SCORE. A Candidate's total score shall consist of the combined scores of the written examination, written essay and BFPC oral interview and Chief's preference points plus veteran's preference points if applicable. Candidates shall take rank upon a promotional eligibility register in the order of their relative excellence as determined by their total score. In the event of a tie score, the placement of the tied candidates' names on the eligibility list shall be determined by lot, in the presence of a quorum of the Board, in whatever manner the Board deems appropriate.

SECTION 3-PROMOTIONAL TESTING-FIRE DEPARTMENT. Promotions within the Fire Department shall be accomplished in accordance with the Fire Department Promotion Act and as further specified within Article 18 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of St. Charles and the St. Charles Professional Firefighters Association Local 3322 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), A.F.F.I.,AFL/CIO, effective May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2016, and subject to any amendments thereto. Promotional vacancies within the Fire Department that are governed by the Fire Department Promotion Act shall be appointed in rank order from the promotional list in accordance with the Act.
