Geneva Jazz Ensemble keeps art form alive with varying ages GENEVA – All was quiet at the Pepper Valley Clubhouse in Geneva until most members of the 19-piece Geneva Jazz Ensemble arrived for their twohour practice.

“Hit it,” said band director Christopher Werve, and the room exploded with the wellknown Count Basie tune “Hay Burner.”

Alexandra Schroeder, 57, of Geneva, who plays trumpet, said she started the band in 2001 after six months of lessons.

“My neighbor was having a garage sale, and I mentioned to her I always wanted to learn how to play the trumpet, so she just gave it to me,” Schroeder said.

Schroeder talked to her son’s middle school band teacher and asked if he would direct a band if she could get it started through the Geneva

Chronicle to receive multiple Inland awards Earlier this month, I flew out of my office, ecstatically clapping.

I had just received word that reporter Brenda Schory will be the recipient of a first-place Inland Press Association award for best personality profile during the organization’s annual awards breakfast next week.

The Inland Press Association is a nonprofit organization based in Des Plaines, with more than 1,000 daily and weekly newspaper members in the U.S., Canada and Bermuda, so Brenda winning a first-place award from the organization is significant.

Brenda will receive the award for her story “Blackberry Township man speaks out after airplane ordeal,” which ran in July of this year.

EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Balcazar In addition, reporter Ashley Sloboda will receive a second-place Inland award next week for her two-day “Business minded” series, which ran in August 2014. That award will be for best explanatory reporting.

••• The scene at the Women’s Conference at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin on Wednesday evening was full of energy.

I wrote about the event a few weeks ago, noting that

it had the goal of empowering, encouraging and inspiring women.

I was a panelist at the conference, which also included a “Pampering and Prevention” area; inspiring talks by Sherri Dublin and Heather Nutile; a keynote question-and-answer session between Women’s Business Development Center president and CEO Emilia DiMenco and state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, who hosted the event with Advocate Sherman Hospital; and a cocktail reception.

More than 80 women (and a gentleman or two) attended the program, which tackled topics such as health, business and maintaining a positive work-life balance. “ ... I meet so many really interesting women,

and I thought an opportunity to pull women together from different backgrounds – what a supportive atmosphere that creates,” the state senator said during a phone interview Friday.

“So, that was kind of my thought process going into it. And I was just thrilled at the enthusiasm that the participants had for the event.”

Stay tuned, as this inaugural Women’s Conference could take place again in the future.

Bird visitors got you down? Knock on wood Knock, knock … who’s there?

For those of you who live in houses with certain types of wooden siding or shingles, at this time of year, your visitor may be a bird. Those same shingles/shakes/clapboards that caught your eye as a home buyer can prove irresistible to your industrious neighbors – the Downies, Hairies, Red-Bellieds, Flickers … or Chickadees.

Right now, these cavity-dwelling species are in the market for two things – food and shelter. If what you’ve been hearing sounds like the random taps of a hunt-andpeck typist, and the tapping takes place over a fairly broad area, it’s likely your bird is, well, hunting and pecking.

Its menu this time of year includes insects in diapause (a bug’s version of hibernation) as well as egg cases and pupae, with a few spider egg sacs thrown in for good measure.

These morsels may be hiding out between the boards of your siding or underneath the cedar shingles. Either way, a hungry bird will sense and seek them out, leaving small nicks and dings as signs of its search.

If, on the other hand, the taps are more forceful in nature, and concentrated in one spot, your visitor has home building on its mind. Woodpeckers, and chickadees too, frequently excavate winter roosts, or cavities, in trees – or wood-sided houses – to provide shelter from wind and snow.

Although dead trees would seem to be the natural choice for such activity, such finds are in short supply in suburbia. Plus, some birds have discovered human homes, in some ways, are even better.

Siding is soft and easy to dig into; the insulation behind the siding improves heat retention inside the cavity; and sides of houses are relatively predator free. Like the Realtors say, location, location, location …

But bird-homeowner interactions don’t stop there. As the seasons progress, our local

Christopher Werve, 26, of Aurora, used to substitute as a saxophone player for the band starting when he was 11, he said.

A 2007 graduate of Geneva High School, he graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2012 with degrees in music education and performance with emphasis in jazz studies. He is also a middle school band teacher in Oswego School District 308.

“They would ask me to come play with the band, and I would sit in and help,” Christopher Werve said. “Instead of being in the band, I decided to stand in front of the band and lead the rehearsal.”

Band members range in age from 26 to 70 and come from the area for rehearsals and performances.

“The band has really progressed,” Christopher Werve said. “It used to be just for fun.

Now it’s real deal music. ... It’s special since my parents are in the group and kind of intimidating because I’m younger than everybody. There’s a lot of really good musicians and they do follow directions. …

They are really good at being independent musicians.”

The jazz band plays at nursing and retirement homes, private parties and outdoor venues.

GENEVA TOWNSHIP – The Kane County Division of Transportation is inviting the public to a meeting to present to them an overview of plans to replace the Kirk Road bridge from Route 38 to Cherry Lane over the Union Pacific railroad.

The meeting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Well Church, 33W835 Cherry Lane, Geneva Township. County transportation officials will provide a continuous audio-visual presentation of preliminary construction drawings and exhibits and can receive comments and input.

The presentation will include an in-depth review of the existing and future bike and pedestrian connectivity, noise analysis and environmental impact, officials said.

The public can meet with representatives of the county and the study team.

The proposed improvement for the Kirk Road bridge, which was built in 1974, is necessary, said Steve Coffinbargar, the as-

sistant transportation director.

“We are early in the process, and this is a good time to gather public input into our alternatives and preferred alternatives,” Coffinbargar said.

“The Kirk Road bridge over the [Union Pacific] railroad tracks has served us really well, to be honest. But it’s approaching the end of its useful life.”

Project manager consultant Anthony Standish, of Strand Associates, said replacing the bridge with a wider structure is the alternative being recommended.

Because the bridge needs maintenance and lane replacement, Standish said doing that alone would not serve the long term needs of the region.

The recommended alternative would be to widen the bridge to have three lanes in each direction instead of two, with a median and bike path, Standish said.

“The point of meeting is to explain our preferred alternative and how we got there,” Standish said.

Illinois bond rating takes another hit KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE kcchronicle.com Illinois’ bond rating this week received its second downgrade, according to a news release issued Thursday.

Moody’s Investors Service has downgraded the state’s $26.8 billion of general obligation bonds to “Baa1” from “A3,” the news release stated.

Moody’s also lowered ratings on the state’s sales-tax bonds – known as Build Illinois – to “Baa1” from “A3,” and on the state’s subject to appropriation bonds (issued by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority and for the state’s Civic Center program) to “Baa2” from “Baa1,” according to the release.

Fitch Ratings on Monday downgraded the rating on the state’s general obligation bonds to “BBB+” from “A-,” and the ratings on bonds related to the state based on its appropriation to “BBB” from “BBB+.”

“The downgrades reflect weakening of the state’s financial position during 2015 and our expectation that an ongoing budget stalemate will lead to further deterioration,” the release said.

Despite a favorable eco-

nomic climate, structural budget imbalance, accounts payable and other fiscal metrics are back-tracking, according to the release. This will leave the state more vulnerable to the next economic downtown, “barring unexpectedly strong and swift corrective actions,” the release states.

Any recurring measures enacted for the fiscal year that began July 1 will have a short time to offset the state’s roughly $6 billion general fund deficit caused in part by recent income tax cuts, according to the release.

Payment deferrals could drive the state’s balance of unpaid bills higher than the levels seen in late 2012, when the backlog approached $10 billion, the release states. The “partisan gridlock” this year is impeding efforts to address the state’s unfunded liabilities for pensions and retiree health benefits, according to the release.

Even with an unfavorable outlook, the state’s credit still is supported by a diverse economy, legal provisions that ensure continued payment on debt even with no enacted budget and a broad legal ability to adjust state revenues and spending, the release said.

She loved reading books, traveling, and taking vacations, and visiting

casino’s to play “The One Armed Bandit”. She also had a passion for gardening. Mary Anne is survived by son, Michael D. (Cheri) VanHoosier of Elgin, Illinois; daughter, Michelle Murphy of Elgin, Illinois; brother, Joseph (Rose) Armstrong of St. Charles, Illinois; and two grandchildren, Brett VanHoosier and Torie VanHoosier, both of Elgin, Illinois. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David E. VanHoosier; and brothers, Richard and Bill Armstrong.

She is survived by her son, David (Sharon Tremble) Anderson of Occidental, California; daughter, Diane (Ed) Dewell of Batavia; sister, Norma Roman of Addison, and two kitties.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Eugene Anderson.

While working at a soda shop in Elmhurst, she met Gene, and they were married in 1949. In 1956, the young family moved to Lombard, becoming part of a close knit community of lifelong friends.

A devoted stay at home mom, Arlene was active in her children’s school activities, going on field trips to museums and zoos. She shared her love of arts, crafts, nature and gardening, while she was the leader of her daughter’s Brownie and Girl Scout troops.

For years Arlene worked as the bookkeeper for the family business. In 1964, when the kids needed orthodontic braces, she worked as a bookkeeper at Ovaltine in Villa Park.

In 1981 Gene & Arlene moved to St. Charles. She joined the Newcomers’ Club, and the Delnor Hospital Ladies’ Auxiliary, and volunteered more than 10,000 hours at Delnor, mostly in the gift shop.

She was a very active member of the cardiac support group Mended Hearts for over 25 years.

Arlene and Gene enjoyed traveling, taking long road trips visiting national parks, and taking extended trips to Sweden to visit family and tour Scandinavia.

An excellent bridge player, Arlene was a member of three bridge

in Chicago, Illinois to Ruth and Byron Schwinn of Red Oak, Iowa.

She met her husband to be, Edwin Dewey Stull at Taft High School, and married in 1950 after she graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa and Edwin completed his enlistment with the Navy.

Barbara enjoyed her career as elementary school teacher and librarian. She taught in Bloomington, Indiana, Paoli, Pennsylvania, and St. Charles, Illinois as her husband’s career with Belden Wire and Cable advanced. They spent their summers at Big Cedar Lake in West Bend, Wisconsin. Upon retiring, they resided in Fort Myers, Florida enjoying boating on the ocean. Barbara volunteered at the local historic museum.

Barbara was dedicated to caring for her family and friends, and her many animals including dogs, cats and horses, especially beloved horse Ginger Snap. Barbara was an amazing gardener and appreciated the beauty of plants BARBARA JANE STULL and nature.

groups for decades. She happily played bridge with her friends to the end of her life. Always an avid reader, Arlene kept up with current events, politics and economics.

Filling every room she entered with warmth and understanding for others, Arlene was a world class mother, and caretaker extraordinaire for her husband, her sister, aunt, mother, and motherin-law.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015, at the Peg Bond Center on the Riverwalk in Batavia, from 1 to 5 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join us celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, Arlene would prefer contributions to the charity of your choice. Organizations that were meaningful to her include the Living Well Cancer Resource Center in Geneva, and the American Diabetes Association.

Hillary Clinton won at Benghazi hearing by not losing her cool

By CHRIS CILLIZZA The Washington Post Hillary Clinton had one mission during her daylong testimony in front of a House select committee investigating the 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya: Don’t get angry.

Clinton’s last appearance before the committee – in January 2013 – was defined by a single moment in which Clinton lost her temper with Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson when he probed about the genesis of the attacks.

“What difference, at this point, does it make?” Clinton shouted at Johnson, waving her arms demonstrably.

Republicans immediately seized on that made-for-cable-TV moment as a sign of Clinton’s frustration at being asked to explain the deaths of American diplomats. Soon, it was all over the Internet.

Clinton clearly had that outburst on her mind as she prepared for the marathon day of questioning about what she knew, when she knew it and how she reacted in the run-up and wake of the attacks in Benghazi.

Her opening statement was a somber remembrance of the four men who died that fall day in 2012; she cast her appearance before the committee as her way of honoring their service. Time after time, she refused to be goaded to anger by pointed questions

by Republican members of the committee, deflecting the queries with either humor or unfamiliarity. (I don’t know those people, I didn’t see that document etc.)

At the same time, Clinton was far from deferential when she disagreed. Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo, for example, pushed

Clinton to explain why so many security requests regarding Benghazi had been made but not fulfilled. “I have to respectfully disagree,” Clinton said. “Many security requests were fulfilled.”

And so it went. Republicans doing everything they could to force Clinton into an admission that her timelines or her assumptions were wrong, Democrats allowing Clinton time to clean up any mistakes or misstatements she made while bashing their GOP colleagues for the partisan nature of the hearing.

The most heated exchange of the hearing, in fact, came between committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina, and Ranking Member Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, at the end of the morning session over the role Clinton friend Sidney Blumenthal played in influencing Clinton’s thinking on Libya.

Clinton, fittingly, stayed entirely out of the fray.

As the hearing wore on – and the politicians got tired – things turned slightly more pointed.

Gowdy pushed Clinton repeatedly on the neutrality – or lack thereof – of the State Department’s Accountability Review Board, which led Clinton to “apologize” for his dislike of the ARB’s findings. She also forcefully defended the work (and honor) of retired Admiral Mike Mullen who led the ARB. The newslessness of the hearing was a triumph for Clinton.

There was no negative sound bite from her. No acknowledgement of error. No moment of real weakness or confusion about the events that unfolded on Sept. 11, 2012. The hearing was, in a word, boring. And that’s exactly what Clinton wanted.

Think pink – this month and always

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE EDITORIAL BOARD October iconically ends with images of revelers young and old clad in costumes, heralding Halloween with tricks, treats and ghost stories.

Consider the dress-up day a brief respite from October’s otherwise up-front approach. Is it farfetched to think these 31 days might eventually be associated with pink more than orange and black?

As National Breast Cancer Month reaches its final week, local and national efforts show no signs of slowing. There’s tremendous support and concern for the approximately 40,000 American women who die of breast cancer each year and the 230,000 women who are affected by the disease.

Male breast cancer also carries risk factors, but the American Cancer Society reports the cause in most men is unknown.

Breast cancer aware-

ness unites everyone. In perhaps the most visible community forum of the fall – the high school football game – fans at contests between St. Charles East and St. Charles North, as well as Batavia and Geneva, demonstrated support on Oct. 16.

During St. Charles’ annual Kick-A-Thon, participants kicked 100 times to “kick out” cancer while raising money and awareness against the disease. A few miles away at Geneva’s Burgess Field, the Vikings and Bulldogs were playing a game recognized under the banner of the Lexington, Kentucky-based Great American Rivalry series.

To be sure, century-old rivals can be “Combined for a Cause” just the same.

That was the name of the schools’ effort to sell pink T-shirts to both student sections that benefited LivingWell Cancer Resource Center and Fox Valley Food for Health, headquartered in Geneva. Livin-

gWell recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The past several years have witnessed great advances in breast cancer treatment, but physicians and organizations stress the importance of detecting signs for possible early diagnosis. Women are urged to perform breast self-examinations and receive age-appropriate mammography.

In that respect, women are thinking pink yearround, not just throughout the 10th calendar month.

The American Cancer Society website, www. cancer.org, lists several ways to help fight breast cancer. One states that being active, eating healthy and limiting alcohol consumption can decrease the risk of developing breast cancer.

Such practices should apply to everyone and need not be tied to a color. They simply promote vibrancy, much like the breast cancer awareness movement.

Saints bow to ‘better team’

It was inopportune lapses on “D” that stung the Saints in a season-ending, 4-2 loss to Wheaton Academy.

First-half goals from seniors Evan DiLeonardi and Brandon DiOrio boosted the Saints within a goal of the Warriors at intermission. But Northwestern-bound Warriors senior forward Ty Seager’s strike 7:28 into the second half created the final margin and a cushion Wheaton Academy didn’t relinquish.

“I just keep trying to play hard, and it’s my senior year, so I’m trying to leave a good mark on it and didn’t want to go home early tonight,” Seager said. “So I’m glad we could do this.”

Wheaton Academy (18-3-1) advanced to its own sectional.

The Saints (14-5-2) were hoping to return to the Warriors’ home pitch themselves, ideally to recapture good karma.

East defeated host Wheaton Academy, 3-0, on Sept. 26. The victory helped ignite a midseason surge that followed a 2-1 loss to eventual Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion St. Charles North, who the Saints pushed throughout the fall while eschewing heavy graduation losses.

“I’m so proud of my lads for what they did this year,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said. “A brand-new squad, nobody even giving them a hope this year.

The way they came together, for a coach, this has been without a doubt my most enjoyable season working with these guys.

“They’ve been spectacular back to front. I know we just

Moments after Seager’s second goal of the night – junior midfielder Isaac Anthony also scored twice – the Saints dashed into the Warriors’ attacking third, where they spent much of the final 40 minutes.

East earned two corner kicks within the next 90 seconds of the goal, but was unable to convert. Seager called the soggy turf surface, which absorbed rain throughout the night, “a little skippy,” which prompted the Warriors to play simpler and decelerate their usual focus on possession.

“We just have to take that on the chin, and unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be,” Jennison said. “We gave it everything we had. And we can be disappointed about the result, but that’s as far as it can go, you know.

We have no regrets about this year.”

Wheaton Academy romped to the Class 2A state title in 2014, outscoring opponents, 356, in seven postseason matches

and punctuating the run with a 5-1 victory against St. Joseph in the state title match at Hoffman Estates High School.

The Warriors, who finished fourth in 2012 and 2013, played only a single one-goal game in the postseason, topping Peoria Notre Dame, 3-2, in supersectionals. So far, so good in their maiden 3A voyage.

“We play to our standard,” junior midfielder Elias McCloud said. “We play 3A schools throughout the regular season, so it’s not too much of a change.

Obviously, it looks bigger, but if we just play to our standard, we’ll be fine.”

McCloud hugged the Saints’ Jasminko Dizdarevic and a handful of other East players after the match. Seager sought

them out, too, estimating that he and McCloud were two of about 18 combined players from the schools who play club soccer for Campton United.

Jennison, naturally, got the last word with his side, embracing players as they collected themselves and prepared to head home.

“I mean, honestly, it’s been a heck of a ride,” Jennison said. “I’m so proud of these guys from start to finish. The way that we turned it around from Week 1 to where they are now, I mean, it’s been different class. You’ve got to put your hand on your heart and say we gave everything we had there tonight, we were just beaten by the better team on the night. I can’t really argue.”

STC East closes season with win For BC, ‘a night to

The St. Charles East football team closed the season with a 16-6 victory at East Aurora in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover game. The Saints (4-5) alternated wins and losses over the final seven games of the season, but coach Bryce Farquhar routinely lauded the dedication of the group, namely senior running back Cam Canales (below), who returned to form in 2015 after injuries curtailed his junior season. East Aurora (1-8), coached by former Chicago Bears and Marmion assistant Kurt Becker, closed the season on an eightgame losing streak. The Saints won two games at home and two on the road this fall.

BURLINGTON – By no means was anything the Burlington Central football team did this year easy.

With zero wins through the team’s first eight games, with nothing to play for after being eliminated from the postseason five weeks into the season, there was something that kept the Rockets coming back.

It was pride. The wins might not have come for most of the year, but behind senior running backs Jason Berango and Brad Sorensen, BC found the win column in the final game of the season, beating Rockford Christian, 32-6, in Big Northern Conference East Division play Friday night.

Both Berango and Sorensen found the end zone twice, and senior Tommy Moretti added the final score for the Rockets (1-8, 1-6 BNC East).

“You find out what kind of character you have in these situations,” Berango said.

“There were definitely times where everyone wanted to just give up during this season, but we still had a season to finish. It’s a tough feeling to be done playing football and it all hasn’t sunk in yet, but it’s a good way to end here and get a win for the first time for this team and a new coach.”

First-year coach Jason Newburger faced the usual obstacles upon joining the program, but each successive loss added on. His base objective: Trying to get a team of teenagers to care about the team, the sport and each other with essentially nothing to play for.

“It was a challenge,” Sorensen said. “Change is a big part, with a new coach and a new system and it’s probably one of the hardest things for guys our age to do, to adapt to change in a sport we love.

There was a sense of relief from Newburger. It was tough for the players to see defeat after defeat each week after the amount of time spent on preparation, but it wasn’t easy being the coach, either.

“It was tough. I told the guys it was tough,” Newburger said. “We talked after Week 5 when we were eliminated from the playoffs, I told the guys, especially seniors, that the rest of this season they were going to learn a lot about themselves with not a lot to gain. The scores may not have indicated how hard these guys busted their tails for this program. I’m proud of every single one of these kids for hanging in there.”

Before Friday, BC had not scored more than 14 points in game, but had 20 points at halftime against the Royal Lions (0-9, 0-7).

Regardless of whether it was against a now winless Rockford Christian team, there were strides being made in a lot of people’s eyes.

There was still passion for the program. There was not a place to park anywhere near the football field Friday night in a game between two teams who entered without a win.

Let’s put it this way: The fans weren’t on the Royals Lions’ side.

Rockets fans have been waiting to celebrate a victory, and they have it. The season that seemed all for naught ended with smiles.

“These kids deserve to feel this way, and record aside, I’m so proud of these kids,” Newburger said. “Most weeks it hasn’t been enough, but tonight it was. For the seniors, to see it all come together on this night, for that group of guys, one last time on Rocket Hill, it just kind of all painted a nice picture for a night that we hope they will remember for a long time.”

Spartans playoff eligible

That is just what St. Francis did Friday, as it defeated Fenwick, 23-14, to improve to 5-4 and become playoff eligible.

The Spartans improved to 2-2 in the CCL Green, and will learn this afternoon whether they’re part of the IHSA’s 256team, eight-class playoff field.

To open the second quarter, Will Purdom took his first snap at quarterback and launched a 33-yard touchdown pass to Brian Gorsky.

Fenwick (3-6, 1-3) worked from behind the rest of the second quarter, as it was unable to get the passing game going. The rain and wet field in Wheaton might have played a factor.

Marczuk showed off his right arm later in the first half, connecting with Tanner Robertsen on a 50-yard touchdown pass and an 8-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Groen as the Knights built a 27-0 lead at the half.

“We came out with a lot of intensity and executed our game plan,” Marczuk said.

“We know we have a lot of potential to put up a lot of points, and our defense really stepped it up and set us up to go out there and score.”

Rochelle (3-6), which was relying on only a running game, proved unable to sustain many long drives, while its defense couldn’t stop Kaneland’s potent offensive attack.

“They’re a good program with a good coaching staff and they’re physical, so you never know what can happen,” Fedderly said. “Jake really showed that he’s such a great athlete.

The Hubs showed no signs of rallying in the second half, especially as the Knights worked the clock down and took a 34-0 lead on Marczuk’s 4-yard touchdown run with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Marczuk then blew the game wide open with 11:38 left in the fourth quarter with a 30-yard touchdown run, which triggered the running clock at 41-0 after the extra point.

“We played hard all game,” Marczuk said. “We wanted to get some momentum for the playoffs.”

Rochelle finally broke the shutout midway through the fourth quarter, but it was far too late to make a difference.

The victory was Batavia’s 32nd consecutive win in conference play.

This morning, a host of Batavia coach Dennis Piron’s players will take the ACT exam. They nearly aced their final prep for the playoffs, as a lost fumble on the opening kickoff was about the only blemish to speak of.

The Bulldogs’ ground game shined in the first half. Zach Garrett rushed 20 times for 158 yards and two scores in the opening half. Dana Anderson and Kyle Niemiec added rushing touchdowns, as well, in the slippery conditions.

Although soggy conditions grounded the usually aeronautically-inclined Bulldogs, Piron knows all that matters is finding the end zone.

“The game plan is to win.

Whatever they give you, you take,” said Piron, who earned his 50th career win. “The conditions were not very conducive to things we normally like to do. Our offensive line blocked exceptionally well.”

The offensive line might have been at its most impressive on the final two drives of

the first half for Batavia (8-1, 6-0 UEC River). The Bulldogs covered a grand total of 167 yards on 27 plays while scoring two touchdowns.

Up 28-0 at the half, the defense helped Batavia quickly put the game out of reach in the third quarter against the Sabres (3-6, 2-4). A safety and 37-yard Derek Nutley fumble return for a touchdown helped push the lead to 44-0.

From that point on, the outcome and an undefeated conference season was just a matter of running out the clock.

Whoever the Bulldogs draw in the playoff opener, they know they’ll be facing them at home.

“That home game is nice to have. We’ll get to play in Batavia and that’s pretty special,” Piron said. “The guys earned that, too, and if seeds hold, you could play a number of home games and our fans and school deserve that.”

ROCHELLE – The Kaneland football team wanted to ensure it would make the playoffs this season.

The Knights delivered in a huge fashion to make it a sure deal, blasting host Rochelle, 417, in the regular-season finale Friday.

Kaneland (6-3), winners of three straight, now awaits today’s pairings to see whom it will play next week in the first round of the playoffs. The Knights missed the playoffs last fall, a rare hiatus.

“We talked to the kids about not worrying about the playoffs and only about this game here,” Knights coach Tom Fedderly said. “We told them to come and play their best game of the year, and I thought they did.”

A strong defense got the ball into the Knights’ offense’s hands early and often in the Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover, and the offense delivered.

BC defense bends before breaking late

The Bison spent the majority of Friday night’s Class 2A Hampshire Regional final in BC’s end of the field, and applied pressure, but could not put the ball in the back of the net for the first 72 minutes of the game.

But Fenton’s Juan Ayala found the ball off a corner kick from Julio Diaz, which proved to be the game’s only goal, ending the Rockets’ season in heartbreak, 1-0.

BC (12-11-1) hung around and gave itself a chance, but could only muster up one shot on goal, from leading scorer Jack Schramme.

“We knew they had some skill players and we had to get

Girls tennis entries eliminated KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE St. Charles North senior Emma Spellman once again shared a court with freshman teammate Shelby Thomas on Friday.

That was the setup this season during weekend invitationals and the IHSA girls tennis state tournament, which concluded for the North duo in the fourth round of consolation play. North’s other state-bound doubles tandem, seniors Morgan Rerko and Brittany Rohrsen, ultimately met the same fate, but the past few days still felt like something special for the North Stars.

The other Kane County Chronicle-area entries vying to advance to today’s final rounds in the tournament split between District 211, 214 and 220 courts also were eliminated.

After yielding only four games during a 3-0 run on Thursday, Rosary freshman singles standout Maria Goheen lost her fourth-round match to Barrington’s Michelle Linden,

6-2, 6-4, her first defeat after winning her first 27 matches of the season. That sent Goheen to a sixth-round consolation match against Grant’s Gaby Schoenberg, who eliminated Goheen with a 6-0, 6-4 win.

Aurora Christian’s freshman duo of Shelby Johnson (Geneva) and Madie Jurasek (Sugar Grove) opened with a win but was eliminated by a team from Edwardsville in a sixth-round consolation match.

mentality until Ayala’s score at the 7:20 mark of the second half.

A scramble in the box found Ayala, who just barely slotted it past BC goalkeeper Ryan Fitzgerald, who was otherwise a brick wall in net Friday night. The senior netminder made 12 saves, keeping the Rockets in the game.

“We did a fantastic job in the back,” Fitzgerald said.

“Our defense, our back line and even our midfielders coming back to help. It was really a team effort and we had the experience we needed here and we got one last game, and almost got this one. We were close.”

BC coach Mike Gecan was clearly disappointed, but seemed more upset for his seniors and the effort the entire team gave. To see that effort end up resulting in a loss was a tough way for Gecan and his Rockets to walk off the field for

the last time this season.

While the Rockets will graduate the likes of Gouriotis and Fitzgerald, there is certainly promise for the future. Gecan obviously wanted to speak of his seniors and what they meant to the program, but after a few days of letting it sink in, he knows that the future is bright.

“The effort that I saw tonight … I’m just so proud of all these guys,” Gecan said. “It was tough with the rain, and not to Jack ever make an Schramme excuse, but it slowed our play a little. I felt like we connected fairly well, and if we could have just countered and connected a couple more passes, it could have resulted in a goal and, more importantly, a win in our favor.”

Batavia junior Jake Fehrenbacher didn’t win a race at Wednesday’s Silver Bone boys cross country meet at Kaneland, but he sure captured the spirit of the thing.

The fourth annual friendly dual between the well-connected Bulldogs and Knights featured Fehrenbacher, a JV runner who is the grandson of late legendary Knights coach Larry Eddington and the son of Amy Fehrenbacher, who competed for the Kaneland girls’ first state-qualifying girls cross country teams in the mid 1980s. Catching up with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Fehrenbacher discussed his family ties and development since his days at Rotolo Middle School.

Here’s an edited transcript:

Weekend

How is it to run at Kaneland in this event, knowing of your grandpa’s history?

Yeah, I enjoy it. I like it.

Because he coached Kaneland, it’s nice running here.

How much do you dwell on the past?

Sometimes. Not a whole

CHIT-CHAT JAKE FEHRENBACHER BATAVIA CROSS COUNTRY lot. Just a little bit. … I wasn’t born yet (when Eddington died in December 1994). … They’ve shown me pictures and medals he’s got from running and stuff.

That’s pretty cool.

What do you enjoy most about running?

I like the team a lot. Just going out every day, running with the guys and everything.

How old were you when you got into distance running? Any other siblings join you?

Schramme, a sophomore midfielder, finishes with his second straight 22-goal season, upping his school record to 44 total goals. He still has two years to play, and Gecan only expects him to keep getting better.

“There is no doubt a lot of talent coming back, but Jack, phew, he’s a special player,” Gecan said. “Forty-four goals through freshman and sophomore year? That’s ridiculous.

I’ve been coaching for 12 years and have rarely seen juniors and seniors do that kind of thing. I expect him to break 100 goals, but I know Jack, and all he cares about is winning and will continue to work hard as everyone coming back needs to do to be successful.”

The Rockets expect to return 18 players to next year’s team, including Schramme’s twin brother, Luke, and sophomore midfielder Victor Rodriguez. was a good year. … 17:25 was my PR.

JV runners are unsung, right, because you still work out with varsity during the state series?

Yeah, we all run as a team.

We have kind of different groups for the workouts, and it’s all individualized, but on warm-ups and cool-downs, we’re all together. … The varsity, they always thank us for cheering them on and stuff. They cheer us on.

How is it been to have coach (Bronco) Meeks coach you in middle school and then now as a high schooler?

It’s kind of nice because he knows us really well from middle school. It kind of makes the team closer because he’s known us from such a young age, when we just started running. It’s kind of unique.

When Rotolo won the IESA title like the boys and girls did Sixth grade. So far, I’m last week, do you see those the only one that’s running. I kids much and congratulate have a younger brother and a them? younger sister.

How did you feel about the season you had running?

I felt good, pretty good about it. I could have been a little faster, but overall, it

An even lengthier postseason run could put the 2008 Class 3A runner-up Rockets’ 35 victories in jeopardy, and this group realizes what goes with the territory of being a top seed.

“It’s where we thought we should be,” Blahnik said.

“We’re definitely happy with that. But we’ve stressed to our girls that we definitely have to go out and earn it every single time.”

The Knights went 4-2-1 down the stretch to get to 19 wins, with the tie coming in tournament play.

“Before, they weren’t playing as a team, but now they are,” Kaneland coach Cyndi Violett said. “Some of our team bonding and team talks we’ve had in the last few days helped bring that along.”

Best area bet to win a regional: St. Charles North at Class 4A Waubonsie Valley Regional.

The senior-laden North Stars (32-3) enter the postseason with a sense of urgency. They feel a special bond with coach Lindsey Hawkins and each other, and they’d like to ride that wave to the state tournament at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena in Normal.

“We’re just trying to keep our focus straight so we can get ready to go far in postseason,”

Potential dark horse: St. Charles East in Class 4A. The Saints, a perennial threat to play into November, host their own regional and are the fifth seed in the East Aurora Sectional. They have lost to three of the four teams seeded above them, including No. 4 Neuqua Valley, a potential regional final foe that won in three sets in St. Charles this month.

The lone exception to the list is No. 1 seed St. Francis, the three-time defending 3A state champion that’s moving up in class. East, working back to health after a season pocked with injury concerns, topped the Spartans in three sets to win the Conant/Fremd Invitational over Labor Day weekend.

It takes seven victories to claim an IHSA girls volleyball state championship in any of the four classes.

Burlington Central earned twice that many during an unbeaten run to a Big Northern Conference East crown, and the Rockets are eager to re-summon that energy when they open the Class 3A postseason at Rockford Boylan next week.

The top seed in its 11-team sub-sectional of the Sycamore Sectional, Central (30-5) could encounter pesky Genoa-Kingston in the sectional final Nov. 5. The Rockets handed the Cogs their lone league losses in 2015, needing three sets to prevail each time. Nimble setter Lexi DeWaard captains a versatile attack that was led by Lexie VanHiel’s 10 kills in Thursday’s conference clincher at Genoa. Co-coaches Meghan Blahnik and Marv Leavitt have praised the group’s overall energy down the stretch, especially in the early stages of matches.

“I think we’ve definitely gotten better at having that intensity from the start,” Blahnik said. “More and more, we’re getting it from the beginning of the match, beginning of the set.

So much, much improved from the start of the season, that’s for sure.”

As we do every year, Tuesday night we sat down to enjoy ABC’s annual airing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” the 1966 animated TV special based on the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz. Noah wasn’t game, and Dad wasn’t quite home from work yet, so my Halloween elf and I made ourselves comfortable on the couch with Posey and Jake and waited. Holly had recorded the show so she cued it up, but couldn’t resist pushing “play” on the remote prematurely.

A few minutes in, after Lucy carves a pumpkin and Linus cries “Aww, you didn’t tell me you were gonna kill it!”

Holly reminded me that we’d never quite gotten around to carving ours. True.

“Mom, when are we doing it?” We’d had loose plans to do so last weekend, but all of us had a lot going on, and the pumpkins got lost in the shuffle. She wasn’t pleased.

(Actually, one oddly oozed a mere week after she and I bought them. Very creepy, but I digress.) “You said we would do it,” she said. Yes, yes I did.

Her dad walked in, thank goodness, so she jumped up and stood in front of the TV and gamely pushed “rewind’ on the remote, pretending we hadn’t already been watching.

But because we really had, when we got back to the carving scene we chorused in unison, “Aww, you didn’t tell me you were gonna kill it!” Aww, poor Linus. And poor Todd. Holly re-wound that scene three times before we finally moved on from our chorusing.

And then I remembered the doughnuts. You know, those evil apple cider donuts from Kuipers in Maple Park? In all of their cinnamon-sugary, buy’em-by-the-dozen, ‘cause-whocan-stop-at-just-one glory? Yes, those. Perfect accompaniment to the “Great Pumpkin.”

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose “Where are they?” I asked, so Holly paused the movie again as Todd sighed, and Noah shouted from upstairs that they still were in the back of the car. I quickly calculated and decided that no, two days (since he’d visited Kuipers with his girlfriend and bought them) was not too long for such doughnuts to be improperly stored. Too long for them to be ignored, maybe, and we would right that wrong.

Immediately. (For best results, microwave them for a few seconds, and then close your eyes and slowly inhale the heady scent of confection perfection before consuming.) Yes. For the record, I had only one.

It’s a first. We resumed our movie-watching, the big red

dog snug on my lap (hoping for crumbs), enthralled as ever by that sweet and salty scene where Linus promises Sally that, “You’ll see the Great Pumpkin with your own eyes.”

Linus: “He’ll come here because I have the most sincere pumpkin patch and he respects sincerity.”

Sally Brown: “Do you really think he will come?”

Linus: “Tonight the Great Pumpkin will rise out of the pumpkin patch. He flies through the air and brings toys to all the children of the world.”

True to form (you do recall the Great Tooth Fairy Inquisition, right?), she put me on the spot the next morning.

“WHEN are we doing it (carving the pumpkins)?” We were busy scrambling to get out the door to school and work, but I quickly took a poll and determined that we’d all be home, awake and in pumpkin-carving form Sunday evening – after her soccer game and Noah’s shift at Trader Joe’s. This seemed to appease my Halloween elf. By the way, in case you don’t know the rest of the story, Linus faints when he thinks he sees the Great Pumpkin rising in the pumpkin patch. Turns out it was Snoopy he saw, poor guy. Keep the faith, Linus – and you, too, Holly. Sunday night it is.

Be careful with spring bloomers; peonies and lilacs will most likely not bloom after transplanting this late in the year.

Typically, spring-blooming plants should be transplanted right after they bloom. I trim back my irises, lilies and hostas, so fall is an excellent time to dig them up and divide.

Should I trim my mums after they bloom?

Mums are not reliably hardy in our climate, but if you find the ideal, protected location with perfect drainage and

a hard frost, so I cut them back.

Why didn’t my oakleaf hydrangea bloom, and can I prune it?

Oakleaf hydrangeas are my favorite because they like shade and tolerate acidic soils.

That being said, they don’t like heat, so don’t plant them too close to a foundation, driveway or anything that radiates heat. Avoid areas where they get too much sun. They also prefer well-drained soil, so – if you have clay or dense soil – they will yellow or not perform. The same goes for alkaline soils. They rarely need pruning, but – if you need to shape them – do it right after blooming because buds form on new growth.

What are good replacements?

You need to consider what is most important to you. I chose based on aesthetics or native species to encourage our natural habitat. Native trees, such as oaks, are a haven for our local wildlife and increase your chances of success. I planted a fringe tree last year because of its compact size and dainty flowers, and because it’s native to Illinois. You’ll find information including growth rates, growing tips and helpful tips on selecting the appropriate tree for your yard.

We’re first-time home-buyers and want to establish a lush lawn. Do you recommend an irrigation system?

An irrigation system will maintain the aesthetics of your lawn, but many studies show the grass never establishes a deep root system to reach its own water supply. Grass needs about 1 inch of rain a week.

In my opinion, to really get a beautiful lawn, it’s in the seed

you select; tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass have deeper root systems and stay green into the drought of summer.

26 Shingles vaccine a good idea for most adults 50 or older

Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in October 2011.

Dear Dr. K: I’m a healthy 55-year-old man. Should I get the shingles vaccine?

And while you’re at it, what exactly is shingles?

Dear Reader: Shingles is a condition that results in a rash and pain. It is caused by the same virus (called VZV) that causes chickenpox. After a case of chickenpox, the virus can lie dormant inside your nerves for decades. By “dormant,” I mean that it is not multiplying – it just lies there inside the nerve cells.

Some people get infected with the virus without knowing it – that is, without getting chickenpox.

That happened to me: I never had chickenpox, but I had shingles as an adult.

The virus gets into the body, infects some nerves and remains inactive.

People catch the virus from other people, usually during childhood.

Shingles occurs when the virus become reactivated – when it starts to multiply. We don’t really understand what causes “sleeping” viruses like this one to become reactivated. The infected nerves, and the skin the nerves go to, become inflamed. This causes a rash that often contains little blisters, along with an unpleasant sensation in the area of the rash. More serious damage to the nerves leads to long-lasting pain known as postherpetic neuralgia.

Most patients describe the pain as “burning” or “stabbing.” It often gets worse when the skin touches something, even something as light as a shirtsleeve. The rash usually lasts a week to 10 days.

If postherpetic neuralgia develops, the pain can be severe and last for months or sometimes years.

Most often, the painful rash of shingles occurs on the chest or abdomen, front or back. But it can also occur on the arms,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff legs and face. It typically appears on just one side of the body, looking like a red stripe. That stripe follows the path of the nerve that is infected.

Many experts recommend that all Americans ages 50 or older should get the shingles vaccine. That applies even if they’ve already had shingles, and even if they are not sure that they ever had chickenpox. The vaccine consists of a single shot in the upper arm.

Getting the vaccine does not guarantee that you won’t get shingles, but it does reduce your chances by 50 percent or more.

And it does an even better job of reducing your risk of postherpetic neuralgia.

Because the shingles vaccine is made with a weakened – not dead – form of the virus, a small number of people develop a rash within a month or so of getting the vaccine.

The vaccine should not be given to pregnant women, but few women age 50 and older become pregnant.

Not all health insurance policies cover the cost of the shingles vaccine. You may want to look into this in making the decision to get the vaccine.

The reason to consider getting the shingles vaccine is to reduce your risk of getting postherpetic neuralgia – by two-thirds!

I’ve voted with my feet. I got the vaccine, because I’ve seen too many of my patients suffer from postherpetic neuralgia. (Even though I’ve had shingles once, you can get it again.)

Chronic pain can disrupt a person’s life. If there’s a simple way to reduce your risk, why not do it?

Learn to live with girlfriend’s curfew Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and dating an 18-year-old girl. She is a high school graduate and has a job as a hairdresser. We are in a very serious relationship and have discussed marriage.

My problem is that her parents are extremely strict.

They just don’t understand that their daughter is a legal adult and can make her own decisions, especially about what time she needs to be home from a date. My girlfriend and I go out every Friday and Saturday night. Her parents have set an 11:30 p.m. curfew for both nights and won’t deviate by one minute.

I told my girlfriend that she should set her own reasonable curfew (at least 12:30 a.m.) and that her parents couldn’t do anything about it except kick her out of the house.

If that happened, she could move in with her friend’s family, who has already said that would be OK. My girlfriend refuses to do this even though she has told me she loves me more than any other human being on earth. If that’s true, why then doesn’t she defy her unreasonable parents?

I’m considering going face-to-face with her parents and demanding that their daughter be allowed to have

If I do meet with her parents, I’ll do it when my girlfriend isn’t there, because she might get upset by some of my demands. Do you think I should discuss only their curfew time or should I add a couple of other disagreements I have with them? – Michael, Seattle, Wash.

Michael: My guess is that patience is not one of your virtues. If you love this young woman, calm down and live with the curfew. What on earth do you think you would accomplish by mouthing off to her mom and dad, except to guarantee a quick end to the relationship?

Forcing your girlfriend to choose between you and her parents – indeed, to contemplate moving out of her house over the matter of an extra hour with you on Friday and Saturday nights – is foolish and immature, but worst of all, remarkably insensitive toward your girlfriend. If she actually loves you, foisting

such a cruel choice on her would be crushing.

Be smart about this situation, and keep it in perspective. A strict 11:30 curfew may, from your point of view, be a nuisance, but it’s hardly unusual. Many parents set strict curfews.

It’s their prerogative. Thank your lucky stars that you are given permission to date this wonderful girl.

Rather than denouncing Mom and Dad from your inflated ego, focus on turning yourself into a young man they can trust. If you are able to do this, they might slowly loosen up on the reins and push her curfew back.

Even if they don’t, the fact that you are acting respectfully toward Mom and Dad would demonstrate to your girlfriend that you also respect – and really love – her.

I’m sure she would be tremendously appreciative. Take a moment to imagine how hard things are for her right now, to be caught between you and her parents.

If you don’t wise up and start acting like a compassionate young man instead of a jerk, you may soon be calling this young lady your ex-girlfriend.

In a much safer environment, bridge students tend to play by “the rules” – general pieces of advice they learn from teachers. But when a deal comes along that does not fit the mold, they often make the wrong play.

For example, in this deal, South is in four spades. How should the defense proceed?

South’s two-spade advance was forcing for one round. On the second round, South was sorely tempted to raise to three no-trump. Here, though, that would not have worked well if East had led the diamond nine, and West had played low. Instead, South forced to game with his three-diamond cue-bid, and North was happy to continue with three spades, suggesting a good doubleton. (With three spades, he would have raised spades on the previous round of the auction.)

West leads the diamond ace: seven, nine, six. He then cashes the diamond king: jack, two, five. Now, looking at all 52 cards, West must shift to his trump. (The curious may work it out.) But most Wests would lead a third diamond, hoping partner could profitably ruff away dummy’s winner.

Some Easts would ruff, not noting that it costs their natural trump trick. The wiser defenders discard. Then, unless playing with mirrors, South will go down, losing two diamonds, one heart and one spade.

All my friends are firm believers of Christianity and attend Bible study, or help out with other things at their church.
