Geneva Jazz Ensemble keeps art form alive with varying ages GENEVA – All was quiet at the Pepper Valley Clubhouse in Geneva until most members of the 19-piece Geneva Jazz Ensemble arrived for their twohour practice. “Hit it,” said band director Christopher Werve, and the room exploded with the wellknown Count Basie tune “Hay Burner.” Alexandra Schroeder, 57, of Geneva, who plays trumpet, said she started the band in 2001 after six months of lessons. “My neighbor was having a garage sale, and I mentioned to her I always wanted to learn how to play the trumpet, so she just gave it to me,” Schroeder said. Schroeder talked to her son’s middle school band teacher and asked if he would direct a band if she could get it started through the Geneva
