ne of my favorite things to do on Friday nights in middle school with my friends was to go to one of our houses, order food and watch scary movies. That’s four middle-school girls watching movies such as “The Exorcist,” “The Omen” and “Friday the

13th.” I can only imagine what our screams sounded like to our parents.

As I’ve gotten older, these are the last movies I would ever see in a movie theater, let alone in my own living room. Haunted houses are the same way.

Habitat restoration day takes place at Bliss Woods

Batavia woman given Barth award for volunteer efforts Presented Thursday during award ceremony

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – From serving as the chair of TriCity Family Services’ Adopt-A-Family Program to co-founding a nonprofit organization that helps homeless children in Batavia School District 101, Joanne Spitz has volunteered her time in many ways.

For her efforts, the Batavia resident was presented Thursday with the 30th annual William D. Barth award. Established in 1985 by the TriCity Family Services board of directors, the award honors the memory of the late William D. Barth, a founder of TriCity Family Services.

TriCity Family Services is a private, nonprofit human service agency that serves central Kane County.

“She certainly epitomizes what volunteerism is all about,” TriCity Family Services Executive Director Jim Otepka said during the award presentation at Riverside Receptions in Geneva.

In accepting the award, Spitz said she was “honored and surprised.”

“I nominated Melinda Kintz,” Spitz said. “I think you guys just said ‘eeny, meeny, miney, mo.’ ”

Last year, Spitz co-founded the nonprofit CHIP IN Batavia, a program to support the Batavia School District’s population of homeless children.

Kintz was recently named the new executive director of Batavia United Way, which raises funds for programs that directly benefits Batavia residents.

Other activities Spitz is involved in include being a founding member of the Batavia Bicycle Commission and being on the board of directors for the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence.

Besides Kintz, other nominees for this year’s William D. Barth award included

Patrick and Sharon Brazill, Janet Craft, Keith Gollwitzer, Scott Kurth and Don Regole.

“We have some special people in this community,” said TriCity Family Services Board President Jason Schneider. “They are doing it because they care. They have a constant commitment to help others.”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Area children’s theater groups on the rise

“I always wanted to do acting,” the 10-year-old said during a break from a rehearsal for the upcoming production. “I thought it would be fun. You don’t always have to be yourself. You can be somebody else.”

Wanting to providing performing arts education for ages 3 to 18, Avenue J owner/ managing director Jennifer Madziarczyk, a Sugar Grove resident, opened her business in January in the Elburn Community Center.

Avenue J Studios is among a crop of new children’s theater groups that have opened in the area over the past few years.

Opportunity for youths in the theater is growing, with new options throughout the Tri-Cities and Kaneland area added to an already established scene.

Madziarczyk said she sees many children who are trying acting for the first time. She said she hopes through acting, they are building their self-esteem and confidence.

Shawn Lehman said she has been happy with her daughter’s experience there.

“They foster a good environment,” she said. “The kids are treated equally. She loves it so much, she wants to do the next production.”

Because Avenue J Studios is squeezed for space in its 800-square-foot space in the Elburn Community Center, it is moving into a new, larger home on the west side of North Aurora. The space is in a shopping center off Orchard Road,

The move should be Nov. 1, Madziarczyk said.

The Geneva Park District offers children’s theater programming through Playhouse 38, which opened in July 2013 at 524 W. State St. in downtown Geneva in the space that formerly housed the nonprofit Geneva Underground Playhouse.

“Our goal was to provide cultural arts for the Geneva community,” said Traci Wicks, the Geneva Park District’s director of marketing and public relations. “We wanted to provide a cultural arts experience for all skill levels and ages.”

She said the community has embraced Playhouse 38, noting because so many youngsters auditioned for the upcoming

production of “Annie Jr.” – about 50 – there will be two casts for the production.

“We don’t turn any kids away,” Wicks said. “They are all talented. It’s exciting that the community is embracing Playhouse 38.”

Playhouse 38 also stages adult theater productions.

Vero Voce School of Visual and Performing Arts started offering children’s theater programming in 2012 when it opened its facility at 951 State Ave., Suite F, St. Charles. The kids do more than memorize lines, said Dawn Harkins, the managing director at Vero Voce School.

“Our mission is to teach them characterization,” Harkins said. “We do a lot with

characterization. We really dive into the character, as opposed to having them on a stage with script in hand and telling them, ‘Stand here; go there; say this line.’ They’re diving into the script to investigate the relationships between their character and the other characters and discover what their part in the story actually is and why it is important.”

Because Vero Voce has a limited amount of space, it limits the number of children featured in any production to about 20, Harkins said.

“We make them audition,” Harkins said. “We don’t just allow them in. We work with them in through the audition process, and give them tips on what they can do better when they’re auditioning not just for us, but anywhere.”

Harkins said she sees the value in children’s theater, saying “it’s great for team building.”

“It’s great for self-expression, for expressing yourself in a very clear way and being able to present yourself in front of people,” she said. “So I think theater is good for a lot of things and a lot of reasons.”

SUGAR GROVE TOWNSHIP – Three people were taken to a local hospital after a crash Thursday involving three vehicles on Route 47 near Jericho Road, according to Sugar Grove police and fire officials.

Emergency responders were dispatched at 3:49 p.m. to the crash, which involved a sport utility vehicle, a minivan and a car, said Michael Warner, a Sugar Grove Fire Department battalion chief.

Warner said the three people were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. He did not know the extent of their injuries.

Two of the people came from one vehicle, the third

person came from one of the other vehicles and there was one other person who refused treatment at the scene, Warner said.

The cars still were in the roadway upon the fire department’s arrival, Warner said.

“All lanes were blocked due to where the cars ended up,” he said. “One of the cars turned sideways and blocked two lanes.”

Route 47 was shut down in all directions for about an hour after the crash, Sugar Grove Police Chief Pat Rollins said.

Full details from the crash was not immediately available Thursday afternoon.

There was no inclement weather at the time of the crash, Warner said.

Bailey Farms Inc. recalling Serrano Chile Peppers The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that Bailey Farms Inc. of Oxford, North Carolina, is voluntarily recalling 6,215 pounds of Fresh Serrano Chile Peppers because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

Although no illnesses have initially been reported, according to a news release from the health department, the product was distributed to Meijer Inc., and consumers may have bought the product from Oct. 14 to Oct. 19 at Meijer stores in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

In addition, the product was distributed to Publix Super Markets Inc., Merchants Distributors Inc., Walmart, Food Lion, Flavor 1st Growers and Packers, US Foods, Military Produce Group LLC, C&S Wholesalers, John Vena Inc. and Harris Teeter.

Consumers who suspect they may have bought Fresh Serrano Chile Peppers from the above listed companies between the dates of Oct. 2 to Oct. 21 should check with the companies to verify whether the product was subject to recall.

Rosary High School to hold open house events

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Despite strong opposition, the Illinois Commerce Commission has approved ComEd’s Grand Prairie Gateway Project, a new 345,000-volt transmission line that will extend for almost 70 miles across Ogle, DeKalb, Kane and DuPage counties.

“The commission determined the transmission line would allow greater access to renewable energy west of Illinois, which should enhance competition in the electricity markets,” stated a news release issued Thursday. Construction of the $251 million project is expected to begin in mid-2015 and the line is expected to be in service in 2017.

tween ComEd’s existing substations near the communities of Byron and Wayne.

The route would begin at the Byron substation and run east until east of Plato Center in Kane County.

The line then would run southeast along railroad corridors to the substation near Wayne.

John Tomasiewicz, an opponent of the plan, who lives in the Regency at Bowes Creek Country Club in Elgin, previously voiced concerns about the health effects of the project and that it would cause a decrease in property values.

Although Tomasiewicz said he was disappointed in the decision, he said he now will work with ComEd to make sure the project is implemented properly.

“They are going to do it with or without me,” he said.

“I still believe a high-power transmission line through a residential development should be buried underground.”

ComEd officials applauded the ICC’s decision.

“As the competitive electricity market expands, transmission lines become congested over time, just like highways do as the communities around them grow,” Terence Donnelly, ComEd executive vice president and COO, said, according to the release. “This congestion impedes the flow of low-cost energy, increasing the cost of delivering that energy to our customers, and we’re obligated to solve that problem. We are pleased that the commission has recognized the need for this important new line, which will offset those increases just as soon as it’s energized.”

A memorial visitation for William William R. R. Ketcham Ketcham of Oak Park will begin at 10 a.m. today

Barsanti said when he was elected state’s attorney in 2004, many of Ketcham’s processes for operating the State’s Attorney’s Office were still in place.

She was an active member of several community organizations including the YWCA, AAUW, Tuesday Garden Club, Santa Fe Desert Chorale and Minerva Coterie.

She was a patron of the arts, a skilled gardener, a voracious reader, a self-driven thinker, passionately curious, and a woman of great spirit. Marjory was a

McConnaughay: School funding bill a ‘real threat’

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com State Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno doesn’t deny there is a problem with the way schools in Illinois are funded.

But the Lemont legislator, along with state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, said in a meeting with the Kane County Chronicle this week that Senate Bill 16 is not the answer.

“It pits school districts against each other,” McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, said.

“No one’s really winning with this.”

The bill – which also is known as the School Funding Reform Act of 2014 – passed the Senate, 32-19, with six voting present. McConnaughay voted no, as did Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, supported it.

As it is written, it generally would favor Chicago and downstate communities and would reduce state distributions to many subur-

ban school districts, McConnaughay and Radogno said.

Few school districts in Kane County stand to gain from the bill. Documents provided by the legislators indicate Elgin U-46 would gain nearly $24.5 million while each of the districts in the Tri-Cities would lose millions. St. Charles School District 303 would lose the most – nearly $8 million.

Should the bill pass, the legislators said districts would have few options to make up the funding outside of raising property taxes and cuts to education.

“We are very concerned,” Radogno said.

She said opponents fear quick passage of the bill or it being used as leverage for other issues.

“I think it’s a real threat,” McConnaughay said. “Unless our constituency stands up ... there’s nothing to stop them.”

Batavia city officials and aldermen are upset with the condition of the former Siemens factory site at 1000 McKee Street. They want the foundations removed and replaced with grass.

Although soil remediation has been done on the site, more might need to be done,

the letter stated. Richter said Siemens soon will be doing additional environmental

sampling on the site to determine whether more remediation is required.

BATAVIA – Batavia city officials and aldermen are upset with the condition of the former Siemens factory site at Van Nortwick Avenue and McKee Street.

“It looks horrible,” 3rd Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann said at this week’s Batavia City Council meeting. “It is time for Siemens to take care of it.”

Although Siemens’ buildings were demolished in 2009, the building foundations have not been removed. Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said the foundations were supposed to have been removed

by June and replaced with grass.

The city in June filed a complaint against Siemens in Kane County Circuit Court. Siemens is charged

with failing to remove foundations and failing to restore property.

The next court date is set for Nov. 25.

“We’ve been trying to work with them on it,” Buening said. “It is in need of attention.”

In a recent letter to the Batavia City Council, James Richter, the project manager from Siemens Real Estate working on the project, told aldermen “Siemens remains committed to taking a prudent approach that serves the interests of the residents of the city of Batavia.”

“Our goal is to resolve any legal and environmental issues that may arise, and proceed in a timely and responsible manner to ensure that we resolve this situation in a manner that best fits the needs of Batavia and our company,” Richter stated in the letter.

City details proposed rules for massage parlors, tobacco dealers

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles is moving forward with its plans for massage parlor licensing and making tobacco retailers more accountable.

The St. Charles Liquor Control Commission on Monday voted, 4-0, at its regular meeting in favor of sending the proposals to the city’s Government Operations Committee. The information was presented by St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan and Deputy Police Chief Steve Huffman.

The plans will amend the city code to include specific regulations for massage and tobacco businesses. If approved by the City Council, both massage- and tobacco-related violations will be handled by the Liquor Control Commission.

The massage proposal includes a new application process with to-be-determined licensing and application fees. St. Charles police will be involved in inspecting the businesses, according to the

written plan.

Some establishments, such as those with athletic trainers, will be exempt from some of the licensing requirements, St. Charles Mayor and Liquor Commissioner Ray Rogina said in a phone interview Thursday.

“We’re basically trying to get the ones that sneak in and sneak out ... the fly-by-night operations,” Rogina said.

On the tobacco side, the city wants to hold the licensee responsible for any violations that might occur instead of simply the employee who might sell tobacco products to a minor.

The tobacco proposal also includes a ban on alternative nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes, in public places, so that it would have the same restrictions as traditional cigarettes.

This is a reflection of what Chicago aldermen approved earlier this year, Rogina said.

After the Government Operations Committee, the proposals then will head to the City Council for a final vote, Rogina said.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR THEY’RE NOW GETTING BORING To the Editor: I’m tired of all the political commercials, Democrats and Republicans. They’re now getting boring, and we still have a few weeks to go until election time.

And indirectly, we taxpayers are paying big bucks.

There should be a set amount for each party, no more than one or two a day.

The American flag can’t cast a ballot On a shelf in the garage, our American flag patiently waits to stretch its stripes, shine its stars and wave at passersby. It commemorates all those men and women who sacrificed lives, limbs, well-being and family time to secure freedom for the rest of us.

Around Kane County, of course, people also fly the flag to make sure everyone knows they’re Republicans.

Just kidding! Putting out the flag means we support and love our country, regardless of who’s Senate majority leader or NRA president.

But when to display the flag? Naturally, everyone flies it on Independence Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day – including both Tri-Cities’ Democrats. Heck, going flagless on the Fourth of July draws as many scowls as a

dark, closed-door, candy-less front porch on Halloween night.

But what about Columbus Day? Any day? Moreover, should current affairs affect whether or not the star-spangled banner should yet wave?

I don’t see many flags being displayed.”

See? We’re in the doghouse because we didn’t respond to a complex, multi-national problem with a requisite knee-jerk response.

And rich people take the most heat. “Just today,” the caller continues, “I drove through an affluent neighborhood. Not one flag was displayed. Where is your pride and love of your country?”

Look, I get it: Flying the flag is the least we can do nonverbally to express an interest in our country’s affairs. But that’s my point: It’s the least we can do.

Our community’s past low voter turnout prophecies a huge majority of us won’t cast ballots in the upcoming election. Easy to blame such a failing on lethargy or laissez-faire

attitude, so maybe a reminder of how the system works will help encourage participation.

Government operates this way: Politicians spend most of their time fundraising to run ads maligning their opponent and promising to deliver on voters’ Christmas wish lists with the ease of Santa Claus.

OK, admittedly, many elected officials work like bookies behind on their payments, always looking to scrounge up cash – and votes.

But we, the electorate, have the opportunity to fill or ditch those proffered hands.

Casting a ballot, either in early voting that began Oct. 20, or on Nov. 4, validates patriotism more than flying the flag; voting honors in a practical, palpable way those who serve in the armed services so we can have our say.

GENEVA – In an effort to meet a Jan. 1 deadline to reopen the morgue, Kane County leaders are expediting the purchase of a freezer and refrigerator.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen told Coroner Rob Russell at the Administration Committee meeting Thursday that he is happy to sign the necessary emergency paperwork.

“Rob, thank you very much for your work on this,” Lauzen said.

Through a request-for-proposals process, the county received five bids for the work and selected Mopec, a company the county previously has worked with, Russell said.

Equipment, installation and freight costs total about $70,300 – which is about $6,000 under budget.

Delivery of the equipment can take six to eight weeks, which is why county leaders decided to bypass the standard procedure of also taking the request to the Finance and Executive committees.

Since the morgue temporarily closed in June because of mold contamination, the county has outsourced forensic operations to DuPage County. Russell said that can cost $5,000 to $7,000 a month depending on the activity level, which is why the goal is to reopen the morgue by Jan. 1.

Apparently, “mum” was the

word as early as when Luke Juriga was growing up. The recent Western Michigan commit since has taken to picking his dad’s brain – hard not to when he’s a Cadets assistant – but that wasn’t as prevalent years ago.

“Not as much as people think I would,” Juriga said. “I never asked him questions because I was kind of scared to ask him questions. I was kind of scared of him. He would never really want to talk about it that much. … I think I talk about it more now because I like relating to what he did

when he played.”

There’s hardly anything reluctant about Juriga’s style these days. In Week 3, referees flagged him for unnecessary roughness after waiting to pancake a St. Francis counterpart after he already had driven him 15 yards downfield.

The Cadets would relish that kind of push during tonight’s Chicago Catholic Green showdown at Montini, as it would create open space for running back Jordan Glasgow and fullback Lucas Warren.

Juriga’s solid play on Mar-

mion’s defensive front in last week’s 56-0 shutout at Aurora Christian proved equally beneficial.

“As a safety, if our linebackers and tackles are doing well, I don’t have to do anything,” said Glasgow, who doubles as a defensive back. “So, like ACS, since they played so well, I just stood around in the back a lot of the time. I was feeling pretty good, I guess.”

Juriga channeled his brevity again when asked about his college choice. He also considered Air Force, Illinois and Northern Illinois, but opted for Western Michigan, which is coached by former Kaneland standout P.J. Fleck.

“Just wanting to make a decision, and I liked them the best,” Juriga said.

Accustomed to playing both ways since his developmental days – “I always played on smaller teams and I was one of the bigger players,” he said – Juriga said his soon-to-be college coaches had him slotted for offensive guard and long snapper.

Juriga learned the latter as a family football rite of passage. His dad taught his brother, who in turn taught him.

Juriga’s mother, Denise, and older sister, Kim, both have NCAA Division I volleyball experience. With no other siblings left to influence, Juriga takes silent pride in stirring his teammates.

“Great effort, great motor, great work ethic in the weight room,” Thorpe said. “We’re very fortunate to have him in our program, and he does inspire other kids because of his work ethic.”

The Kankakee Daily Journal sportswriter and noted IHSA football bracketologist doesn’t always crunch numbers from a sanctuary, though. Much of his work comes while watching college and NFL games on TV on weekend afternoons, figuratively transforming Soucie into an armchair analyst.

Soucie will shed that label at 8 p.m. Saturday, again offering live, in-studio insight as part of the IHSA football pairings show on Comcast SportsNet. “The IHSA has kind of become more friendly with me than they used to be. …

Now they kind of embrace me,” Soucie said.

A Daily Journal employee since his days as a high school part-timer in the early 1990s, Soucie became a guru innocently enough. In 1993, before the dawn of the Internet, then-Coal City coach Ken Miller habitually called Soucie for other Friday scores from the wire in a bid to determine his team’s playoff class.

Sometime during the Coalers’ eventual Class 2A title run, Soucie took a shine to the idea of making his own projections.

Not just for Coal City, but the entire IHSA – enrollment classifications, playoff points and all.

Through the years, IHSA officials occasionally have emailed Soucie as a cross-reference. On one Selection Saturday, IHSA official Matt Troha handed Soucie the eight-class bracket to make sure everything looked good.

“I knew he was joking,” Soucie said, “because I know they’ve checked it numerous times.”

Soucie knows what that’s about.

A few hours later, Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron scouted Streamwood’s home matinee against West Chicago alongside his daughter, Alex, and braced for the challenge of a Sabres receiving corps led by Cody Jayko. “Some real good receivers who go get the ball, and they can turn it into plays when they get it,” Piron said. The Bulldogs are in full health entering the regular-season finale and aim to stay that way in their bid for a second straight state title, this time one class up. “It would take an awful lot not to be in 7A” this fall, Piron said.

IHSA GIRLS TENNIS STATE TOURNAMENT

Long, eventful Day 1 for Kaneland duo

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Day 1 of the IHSA girls tennis state tournament couldn’t have unfolded much more oddly for Kaneland’s senior doubles tandem of Jelly Emmanouil and Madi Jurcenko.

The girls, playing at Hoffman Estates, spent about two hours in the school’s gymnasium Thursday after a suspicious package on the football field forced the school into a soft lockdown, chasing the tennis players off the courts in the middle of matches.

Then, after winning their first two matches of the day, a third-round match against Whitney Young’s Sloane Williams and Kendall Scruggs turned contentious over disputed line calls and ultimately was suspended by darkness with the Knights leading by a set but trailing 5-2 in the second.

“After such a long day and the discrepancies that happened, it kind of tires you out mentally and physically, but it was a good day,” Jurcenko said. “Good weather, too. It was nice.”

Another long day could loom today. Jurcenko and Emmanouil were to report to Rolling Meadows for a 7:30 a.m. resumption of the thirdround match and then will need to play catch-up to get back on schedule in either the main bracket or the consolation draw.

The Kaneland seniors’ first-set win against Whitney Young came via tiebreaker (72) after originally trailing in the set, 5-2.

“Jelly and I have never lost a tiebreaker in our entire career of playing,” Jurcenko said. “I don’t know why. We’re just good at them. We just play it point by point. We don’t get ahead of ourselves.”

Emmanouil and Jurcenko beat foes from Crystal Lake Central (6-0, 6-1) in the first round and from Mt. Zion (6-1, 2-6, 6-1) in the second round. It was during their second-round match that the players were ushered inside, creating an extended lunch break.

Another consolation match against Morris was pushed to this morning because of darkness.

North’s No. 2 doubles team of Lianne Anderson and Emma Spellman concluded their late-season surge with a 2-2 day.

“By the end of the season, they were just playing spectacular tennis, the best tennis of

their lives,” North coach Eve Tubman said.

Playing at Palatine, Geneva senior Kirby Einck hit her goal of making it through the first day of the state tournament unscathed for the first time in her decorated career. Einck defeated Wauconda’s Sarah Hackman, Peoria Richwoods’ Anna Liu and Stevenson’s Zoe Manion, all in straight sets.

“It’s what I wanted, and I’m glad I could achieve it,” Einck said. “Out there on the court, I just kept telling myself, ‘How bad do you want it? How and do you want it? If you want it, OK, work for it.’ ” Of the three matches, the last one against Manion was most competitive, but Einck closed

out a tight second set to win the match, 6-2, 6-4, conserving some energy for today’s fourth-round match with Lyons freshman Meg Kowalski (a 3-4 seed), to be played at Buffalo Grove.

“I was getting a little bit tired, took a little bit more time in between points, but when it got down to it and I needed to hustle for those balls, I was able to get there,” Einck said.

Einck, a 16-32 seed in the tournament, said she’ll consider each of her remaining matches in the tournament a bonus. Now 24-2 on the season, Einck’s lone losses came against defending state champion Tiffany Chen (Naperville Central), who also remains in the winner’s draw.

Einck beat Kaneland senior Sammie Schrepferman to win the sectional championship, and Schrepferman, playing at Palatine like Einck, won her first two matches Thursday before running into unbeaten Palatine freshman Asuka Kawai, who moved from Japan last year.

Kawai dominated the thirdround match, 6-1, 6-0, but a sporting Schrepferman cheerily declared “I got one game!” as she went to congratulate Kawai.

Schrepferman called Kawai “a sweetie,” and credited her for playing superb tennis.

“It’s frustrating, but I think it’s kind of a privilege to be known that I can play with her and I can still hang with her, even though she’s hitting the winners,” Schrepferman said.

“I can still compete with her, and she was complimenting

me on almost everything.”

A three-time state qualifier, this marked the first year Schrepferman won her first two matches of the tournament. She’ll continue in consolation play today. As for Kawai, Schrepferman considers the 5-8 seed a bona fide state title contender.

“I think she has a pretty good chance, and if she wins it, that’s phenomenal,” Schrepferman said.

Elsewhere, Rosary’s doubles team of Megan Conlin and Maddy Deufel went 2-2 in the double-elimination tournament, including a first-round win against Collinsville.

Wheaton Academy duo Maisie Howland and Lily Bracy dropped two of three matches, taking a consolation match with South Elgin’s Jordane Waichunas and Michelle Lopez, 6-0, 6-0.

St. Francis singles senior Ava Kolman, making her first state tournament appearance, lost both of her matches, but was cheered up by teammates who made a human tunnel for her to run through, then consoled her with a group hug.

An emotional Kolman said she hopes to continue playing tennis in college, likely somewhere local.

“It was super high intensity and super difficult,” Kolman said of the state competition.

Geneva sophomore Grace Krueger won a Round 1 match against Mattoon’s Shannon Daniell, 6-1, 6-0, before dropping her next two matches.

Change of scenery Two-time defending Class 3A state champion St. Francis was sent on a northerly track this postseason, a stark change from what has been the Spartans’ norm.

Top-seeded St. Francis was shipped to the Regina Dominican Regional in Wilmette, and will open play Tuesday against either Regina Dominican or Chicago Kelvyn Park.

The Spartans have been used to butting heads with fellow powerhouse Joliet Catholic during the postseason, but Joliet Catholic– struggling this year – is not part of the Vernon Hills Sectional.

“Truly Joliet Catholic, we’ve played them for 150 years in a row here in sectionals or supersectionals, and we will not be seeing the lovely Angels this year,” St. Francis coach Peg Kopec said.

“And here they are, of course, down. I mean, Murphy’s law or what? But I’m not crabbing.”

Brush it off Rosary’s regular season ended with a thud Wednesday as the Royals were dominated, 25-15, 25-15, by St. Francis.

Still, Royals coach Rachel Hartmann said she didn’t mind closing with such a formidable opponent.

“I think I’d rather have a good match (leading up to regionals),” Hartmann said. “ … You didn’t get a win, but it was our senior night. I think our girls still feel good. I think if we were to see Francis again, it would be a supersectional, so more self-motivation. We have to work hard if we want to get to where we want to be. What we’re doing right now isn’t good enough. I don’t think the girls got down because of [the loss].

I think it makes them want to work harder.”

The Royals host a regional next week in which they are the top seed. No. 2seed Plano and No. 3-seed Aurora Central Catholic figure to provided the toughest competition.

Exactly one week before St. Charles North faces Neuqua Valley in an IHSA Class 4A Neuqua Valley Regional semifinal, the North Stars fell to the Wildcats, 11-25, 25-23, 26-24, on Tuesday.

“Obviously, it wasn’t ideal, but at the same time it was kind of nice just because they are so competitive and I think we’re very evenly matched,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said. “We beat them once this year already (at a tournament in Wheaton) and went to three.

Obviously, we lost [Tuesday] and went to three, so we’re very evenly matched.

I think it sets us up for what a dogfight it’s actually going to be on Tuesday. I guess the loss [Tuesday] gave the girls a little spark, a little pep in their step [Wednesday] at practice, and made them want that match even more now.”

North has now won 23 matches and counting, but some of its marquee wins came after postseason seeding was completed. Late-season triumphs including a two-game win against St. Charles East and the North Stars’ Minooka Invitational championship generated momentum, but were too late to boost North’s seeding; the North Stars are a No. 9 seed in a loaded 4A Bartlett Sectional.

“I think our girls, they’ve got this mindset right now, they just really believe in themselves. … I think they believe they can do just about anything,” Hawkins said. “We went on a streak there where we were just playing lights-out volleyball, playing so well. I think even [Tuesday] they played well, but they had glimpses of some of the concerns we had in the beginning of the season where we weren’t exactly finishing and playing a little passively.”

If North takes out No. 8-seed Neuqua Valley in the regional semifinal, a likely matchup with the sectional’s top seed – Benet – would await in the final. Benet beat North when they met during the regular season.

Despite its strong regular season, North faces a tall order at regionals, but Hawkins said the North Stars still envision a big postseason.

“I have seen, on any given day, anybody can beat anybody,” Hawkins said. “I mean it’s been so up and down just in our conference, and across the state, I feel like it’s anybody’s game on any given day, so, yeah, they know Neuqua is really tough, they know Benet is really tough, but we also know we kind of put ourselves in this situation. We didn’t play the volleyball we needed to be playing earlier on in the season to get a higher seed, so we’re going to deal with this 9 seed one game at a time

Prep bowling lacks a Midnight Madness or the similar preseason pomp of much of its brethren sports.

Still, the fact remains: just around the time football players begin studying the Xs and Os of traditionally foreign playoff opponents, boys bowlers start examining lane oil patterns.

Pitchers (of water and pop) and keglers report to bowling alleys statewide Monday for the first day of practice. Girls teams follow suit Nov. 17.

Optimism is especially high for the St. Charles East boys as an experienced core returns.

“They’ve been bowling off and on for a little bit here, so they’ve been getting some opportunities to be successful early, for sure,” Saints coach Steve Dessauer said.

Girls bowlers must wait three more weeks to open practice. The IHSA staggered the start of girls season after adding a regional component to the state series last school year. The scheduling also lessens conflicts of interest for programs whose coaches guide

YORKVILLE – The Kaneland girls volleyball team earned a share of the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title with Yorkville after beating the host Foxes, 26-24, 25-14, Thursday.

Cyndi Violett, in the first year of her second stint as Knights coach, said it is believed to be the program’s first conference title since 1981.

“I’ve been at Kaneland for 20 years and I know it’s been longer than 20 years,” Violett said.

“It means a lot to come back and do that with the girls.”

The Knights close the regular season 23-8-1, 7-1 in NI Big 12 East play, avenging a home loss to Yorkville earlier this season.

Hollie Fedderly and Hannah Nauert had 14 assists apiece, Ellie Dunn supplied 13 kills and Kathy Nguyen notched 11 digs for the Knights.

The Knights won conference titles across all levels, according to Violett.

DeTamble served five aces and broke Stephanie Holthus’ single-season program record of 94.

“She’s got a really accurate jump floater,” Rockets coach Marv Leavitt said. “She can move it around, and I think it’s that combination of being able to float but still have it be a heavy serve. It’s phenomenal to have that many aces in one year.”

Lauren Wiltsie added five aces for BC (19-6, 14-0 Big Northern Conference East), which could face the Cogs again Tuesday in a Class 3A Hampshire Regional semifinal.

More to Halloween than candy, costumes Trick or treat?

Halloween is one of those observances that has a good and bad news aspect.

In fact, the origins of Halloween are thought to be associated with sort of a rally against evils associated with death, goblins, ghosts and all of those “things that go bump in the night.”

This year’s evils, as far as I am concerned, are present in the form of political campaigns, serial killers and Ebola panic.

The treat aspects are abundant.

What a glorious fall color display, perhaps a nice payback from all that rain? One more reason to appreciate the scenic glories of living in a river valley. I have often heard from Craig Bobowiec that we have much to offer to prospective tourists and need to

Woman’s club to host fashion show fundraiser KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The Batavia Woman’s Club will host a fashion show fundraiser in November.

The fashion show will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, at Pipers Banquets, 1295 Butterfield Road, Aurora.

The doors will open at 11 a.m., and the luncheon will begin around noon, with the fashion show following lunch.

This year’s fundraising event will raise money for two organizations – Valley Sheltered Workshop in Batavia and CASA Kane County. Last year, the club raised $11,000 for

Mutual Ground, according to a news release.

The featured fashions are from Steinmart in St. Charles.

There will be many silent auction items and baskets that will be raffled off.

This year, there also will be a deck of cards raffle. One raffle will be for four tickets to Disney World, which are good for two years, states the news release.

Another card raffle will be for a year’s worth of massages from Pure Health in Aurora. Raffle tickets cost $20. Tickets to the event cost $40.

A condition of her invitation is that we (my spouse and I) agree to use a type of high-powered water gun to shoot at the peacocks from her balcony while we are visiting. I understand that these birds can be messy (I assume from their droppings). However, we find conditioning the visit upon our willingness to shoot water at the birds disconcerting.

Strength training helps to slow bone loss Dear Doctor K: I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia. My doctor advised strength training because it can help slow bone loss. How does it do that?

Dear Reader: Osteopenia is a thinning of the bones. It is often a precursor to osteoporosis, a more severe thinning of the bones.

Osteoporosis puts you at risk for disabling, and sometimes debilitating, fractures.

Bones are filled with cells.

Some cells build up new bone; other cells tear down old bone. In most people, those two processes are in good balance. But in some people, particularly as they grow older, more bone gets torn down than built up.

To reverse that imbalance, and the osteopenia that comes from it, you need to stimulate the bone-building process. Bone, like muscle, follows the “use it or lose it” rule. One way to “use it” is to exercise. When you exercise, particularly in strength training, it stimulates the formation of new bone. The tug of the muscles on the bone, and the weight that the bone is being asked to support, signal the bone-building cells to work harder.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Strength-training exercises build muscle by harnessing resistance – that is, an opposing force that muscles must strain against.

Resistance can be supplied by your body weight, free weights, elasticized bands or specialized machines. No matter what kind of resistance you use, putting more than the usual amount of load on your muscles makes the bones stronger.

Strength training should target bones of the hips, spine and wrists, as these are the bones that are most likely to fracture.

People with osteopenia, like you, or with osteoporosis have to exercise carefully. A person should not do exercises that could cause thin bones to fracture. For example, I tell my patients to protect their spine.

This means avoiding activities and exercises that require you to bend your spine, especially to lift a weight. Bowling is a common example.

I also advise my patients to avoid free-weight exercises and machines that put added stress on the spine. These include some leg-press machines, leg raises performed lying down, and squats done with weight bars resting on the shoulders.

A person with thinning spine bones needs to do strength-training exercises that build strong core muscles, such as the standing side bridge. (I’ve put a description and illustration of this exercise on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

I don’t know your age, but it’s possible that you’re thinking as you read this: “I’m too old to do strength training, to work out with machines and weights and such.” That’s wrong. Supervised weight training in older people builds muscle and bone.

Finally, don’t stop with strength training. Add a few balance exercises to your routine to reduce your risk of falls.

Teen with boyfriend in the Army wants to date others Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and my boyfriend is 21 and in the Army, stationed overseas. It’s been three months since he left and I won’t see him for a long time, so we agreed to write to each other as often as we can. I have been writing faithfully to him, not every day, but 36 letters so far. And during this time he has written to me only twice and one was only a postcard sent when he was on a three-day pass with some of his friends.

I know he’s busy doing his Army duties and doesn’t have much free time, but only one letter and one postcard in three months doesn’t sound like he’s thinking much about me. I know that he had a reputation as a ladies’ man before he went into the service and it makes me think he is eyeing a bunch of beautiful local girls where he’s stationed.

Do you think it would be best to just end this “steady” relationship for now and date others until he comes home? – Erin, DeKalb Dear Erin: There are many beautiful women all over this planet, but there are also plenty of handsome and charming men around, especially in your fine city of DeKalb.

Dr. Wallace: I was reminded of myself when I read the letter from a girl who entered a poetry contest and was told she was a semifinalist, and for $50 she could buy a book in which her poems were published, along with those of all the other semifinalists.

I entered a similar contest once and was also told I was a semifinalist, so I bought the $50 book, but that was

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace the end of that. I finally figured out that I had simply paid to see my poem in print. Egos (my mom’s and mine) made us buy that book.

I’m still writing and, if I do say so, I have improved my skills.

Even though I have that book and a letter saying I was a semifinalist in a poetry-writing contest, I’m not sure I’m a noteworthy poet yet. Where can I send my material to find out? – Abigail, Ames, Iowa Dear Abigail: Becoming a published poet may happen only after years of effort and perseverance, and can be as much a matter of luck – submitting just what an editor happens to be looking for – as talent. By all means keep trying, but also show your work to high school or college English instructors, who can tell you if you’re on the right track and offer suggestions. Even more importantly, take a writing class.

The best encouragement I can give you is that if you love writing, you’re doing something right. To worry whether or not you’re a good poet is sort of missing the point. What you have to do is keep growing and becoming a better poet, which will happen only if you keep writing and showing your work to as many people as possible and keep reading the work of other poets.

Cory Doctorow, a Canadian blogger, journalist and science-fiction author, claims, “Abnormal is so common, it’s practically normal.”

If abnormal is normal, does that make normal abnormal? In bridge we have lots of normal bids and plays, but the deals in which we must produce the abnormal is one reason why the game has kept its appeal.

In today’s deal, what is the abnormal play? South is in four spades. West leads the heart two in answer to his partner’s opening bid.

North just shut his eyes and blasted into four spades. He hoped that even if his heart king was worthless, his partner would have a chance to rake in 10 tricks.

Assuming East has the heart ace (surely West would not have underled the ace), South starts with three top losers: one spade and two hearts. He must avoid also losing a diamond trick. Who has the diamond king?

If West, the contract is going down when East shifts to that suit after taking two heart tricks.

Therefore, declarer must hope that East has that key card. Then the defenders can establish a diamond trick only if West leads the suit through dummy’s ace. South must keep West off lead.

Declarer must play low from the dummy at trick one, not make the normal play of putting up the king on the off chance that West has underled the ace.

East wins with his jack and cashes the ace, but then has no winning continuation. Declarer drives out the spade ace, draws the rest of the trumps, and runs the clubs to discard his diamond loser.

He takes four spades, one diamond and five clubs.
