he Kane County Chronicle newsroom received a phone call a while back about a North Aurora mom, Amy Miller, and her 2-year-old son, Jackson. The call was about Jackson’s love for the family’s Waste Management collector.

Amy told us how Jackson waits every Friday for “Mr. Mac” – also known as McCree “Mac” Davis of Maple Park – to drive

through their neighborhood and run his garbage can lift for him.

When I got to their house ahead of Mr. Mac a couple of Fridays ago, Amy met me in a neighbor’s driveway. We didn’t want Jackson to get too shy when he saw me, so I kind of hid behind some trees as Mr. Mac rounded their corner and Jackson emerged, on cue, to greet his favorite person.

‘The Voice’ star to perform at Arcada show Sunday

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – “The Voice” contestant Jeffery Austin will be back in his old stomping grounds Sunday to give a free show at a St. Charles landmark.

Austin, 24, will perform various pop and soul hits during a general admission, no-ticket-required concert starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles. He’ll sing songs by artists, such as Sam Smith, Adele and more.

Austin, whose real last name is McClelland, is appearing on NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition airing Mondays and Tuesdays.

Austin has performed on the Arcada stage before for a charity function in 2010, but never as the star of his own concert. Joining him on stage will be fellow St. Charles North High School Class of 2009 alumni Danielle Floyd and Brooke Lauritzen for some duets.

“This is my first [headlining] show that I’ve ever done, ever,” Austin said Thursday in a phone interview. “It’s such a nice venue in my own hometown.”

Austin’s former classmate Mark Michelson connected Austin with Ron Onesti, president and founder of Onesti Entertainment Corp., which took over management of the Arcada Theatre in 2005.

Austin said he spoke to Onesti about performing as an opening act, but then Onesti offered use of the Arcada for Austin’s own show.

“I was so happy and grateful,” Austin said.

The Blue Goose Market also has shown support for Austin by baking a cake with

his likeness. Austin was in town Oct. 15 to buy the cake, but Blue Goose President Paul Lencioni simply gave it to him.

“This is somebody who is on a bigger stage that is a phenomenal representation of St. Charles,” Lencioni said.

Blue Goose staff members are organizing T-shirts in support of Austin, and Austin himself will have T-shirts available for sale at Sunday’s concert.

Austin said he plans to meet and take photos with audience members who stick around after the Sunday concert.

MEETING MR. MAC

Waste Management employee’s biggest fan is North Aurora boy

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Friday mornings have become a weekly highlight for 2-year-old Jackson Miller of North Aurora.

That’s when he walks out near the street, sometimes pulling his mom behind him, to see a good friend of his.

“He hears the truck and says ‘Mr. Mac’s coming,’ ” said Amy Miller, Jackson’s mom.

Jackson this year became McCree “Mac” Davis’ No. 1 fan.

Davis is a Waste Management sanitary engineer and shows up every Friday morning outside the Miller household in a large green garbage truck as part of his regular route.

Jackson and Davis will give each other high-fives, and Davis briefly will talk to Amy Miller or her husband, Ryan, before he continues the rest of his route.

“They’re really great people – a really, really great family,” Davis said.

About five months ago, Davis noticed Jackson’s continued interest in his truck. He finally offered to take a picture of Amy Miller and Jackson and started talking to them.

Amy Miller said Jackson’s interest in trucks comes from his maternal grandmother, Sherri Skaggs, who points out trucks to Jackson whenever they drive around in the car.

As part of teaching Jackson to grow up respecting others, she began putting the title “Mr.” in front of Davis’ nickname, Mac, hence the name “Mr. Mac.” “He talks about him all week,” Amy Miller said. “Anytime we see a garbage truck, he just squeals that it’s Mr. Mac.” The weekly Mr. Mac appearance also inspired Jackson to wear his glasses. Jackson, who initially was shy around Davis, grew comfortable enough to give him a

high-five, something he previously did only with his father.

Davis this summer gave Jackson his favorite toy – a small replica of a Waste Man-

agement truck. Jackson plays with it so much that the wheels have fallen off, Amy Miller said.

Davis said he never has met a family like the Millers, and has never had a fan like Jackson. He said the boy reminds him of his grandchildren.

“I really started to get to know this little boy – he’s got a

special place in my heart,” Davis said.

Davis got to know the family better in August during a National Night Out cookout also attended by the Millers’ neighbors, police and firemen.

Halloween also will have a Mr. Mac tie-in – Jackson is going to dress up as Davis, complete with a drawn-on mustache and minigarbage truck.

The Miller family plans to have more get-togethers with Davis and hopefully meet his girlfriend. Amy Miller said Davis now is a definite friend of the family.

“We knew it was something special to see that bond that Jackson has with him,” Amy Miller said.

Plan for Elburn bed and breakfast business withdrawn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – A plan to create a bed and breakfast business at 420 E. Kansas St. in Elburn has been scrapped.

At Monday’s Elburn Village Board meeting, one of the opponents of the plan, a neighbor, Tom Stopka, spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting. He handed board members a letter highlighting concerns. As he distributed the letter, Village Administrator Erin Willrett told Stopka the village had heard from the homeowner, who told officials she would not be pursuing the bed and breakfast designation.

Previously, board members had approved Judy Singer’s request to allow the bed and breakfast business at the site, which is called the Aaron

Whitney Homestead. However, they denied Singer’s request to have a venue for private parties.

Singer had hoped to host events at the location once a month, with restrictions in place. For instance, she said she would not have allowed alcohol at the events and would have limited the gatherings to 65 people.

“All petitions have been removed,” Willrett said at the meeting.

Stopka asked if that included the “party barn.” Willrett repeated that “all petitions have been removed.”

Reached via email on Thursday, Singer confirmed what Willrett said.

“After meeting with my financial advisers, I have decided not to open a B&B,” Singer wrote. “I want to thank

the village of Elburn for all of their assistance in this process.”

In a phone interview Thursday, Stopka said he was ready to continue to attend meetings in opposition of the plan.

“I’m very, very, very relieved,” Stopka said, adding “my gut tells me it’s not over, but time will tell.”

Jon Wenberg, who owns property in the neighborhood, attended a previous meeting to oppose the party venue. On Thursday, he said he would have supported the bed and breakfast plan, but the party venue would have been too disruptive. He stressed that he had no issues with Singer at all.

“I understand her position,” Wenberg said, adding “I’m happy for safety’s sake.”

Stewart Cudworth, age 89, passed away on October 17, 2015 from natural causes at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva, Illinois.

Despite suffering the effects of a stroke in 2002, Stew lived an active life with support of caregivers that enabled him to remain in his St. Charles, Illinois home through the last week of his life.

His wife Emily Nichols Cudworth, who died in 2005, preceded him in death.

For most of his life, Stew had been an active golfer and tennis player, but lost use of his right arm and leg as a result of the stroke.

Despite these limitations, he kept up his physical therapy, working out at Delnor Health and Wellness Center. His vibrant personality enabled him to build friendships despite his loss of speech. Ultimately, he taught himself to write and draw using his left hand, a talent that helped communicate needs and interests on many occasions. Even after his stroke, Stew was an active fan and supporter of local sports teams, attending games well into his 80’s. His sons were all athletes with successful careers in basketball, track & field, soccer, cross-country,baseball and table tennis.

An avid singer and music lover, Stew listened to Big Band music and participated in choir for years at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church in Geneva. That ability to sing was never lost, and Stew could bring up lyrics from some of his favorite songs on special occasions.

Raised on a farm in Upstate New York, Stewart Cudworth was born in Cortland, New York,and moved to Bainbridge with his sisters following the death of their mother from complications of breast cancer when Stew was just seven years old. And during the Depression, trio of aunts and uncles on their mother’s side cared for the family of three sisters Marion, Helen and Margaret.

Stew joined the Navy with a

tour of duty in the Pacific in 1945, including assignments in Hiroshima and Nagasaki following the end of armed conflict in World War II. Returning home, Stew attended Cornell University, earning his engineering degree on the GI Bill.

Following graduation, Stewart reconnected with the woman who lived 200 yards down the road a farm in Bainbridge, New York.

In his career, Stewart worked primarily as an electrical engineer all his life, variously in television picture tubes, camera tubes, data read out tubes, electrical meters and fiber optics, employed by firms including Sylvania, RCA, National Electronics, Simpson and Belden.

Stew and Emily were married for more than fifty years and had four sons, James Stewart Cudworth (Suzanne), age 64 in Willow Street, Pennsylvania, Gary Douglas Cudworth (Ricarda) in Oswego, Illinois, Christopher Lynn Cudworth (Linda, deceased) in Batavia, Illinois and Gregory Lawrence Cudworth (Sue) in Stowe, Ohio. Stewart is survived as well by two sisters, Helen Metzinger (Lou) of Louisville, Kentucky and Margaret Baranak of (Pennsylvania). Stewart is also survived by six grandchildren, Robin Cudworth of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, son of Jim and Suzanne, Victoria Cudworth of Oswego, daughter of Gary and Ricarda. Evan and Emily Cudworth, son and daughter of Christopher Cudworth, and Sophi and Alli Cudworth, daughters of Gregory Cudworth.

For six years Stewart enjoyed the freedom of living at his own home thanks to the care of Leonid Klevetts, a dedicated caregiver from the nation of Belarus, and former soldier in the Russian Army and true friend of Stewart, with whom he visited many garage sales, moving sales and Goodwill stores in search of fun bargains.

Memorial services for Stewart Cudworth are going to be held near the Thanksgiving holiday so that family can gather and share their memories of a man who cherished his family and friends.

Jewish Neighbors group unveils 1st section of mosaic mural 11

GENEVA – A mosaic featuring a white dove of peace, a brown dove and the Hebrew greeting “Shalom” will be the first section of a mural being created by the Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors in Geneva.

Members of the group and the Geneva Foundation for the Arts attended the unveiling of the first part Thursday in the walkway between the Neighbors’ office at 121 S. Third St., and the Geneva History Museum, 113 S. Third St. Volunteers are continuing to create the next sections, which eventually will be hung on the wall in the walkway, said Greg Cibura, president of the Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors.

“It’s our 10-year anniversary,” Cibura said. “We decided we wanted to give back to the community that has given us so much and has been so kind to us. And we figured a nice way to do that would be to create this mural as the universal values of the area. It has a river running through it. It has giving themes attached to it and peace.”

The mural was designed by artist Danielle Dobies, neighbors said.

The mosaic mural will be near the Peace Pole just outside the group’s door – a pole with the message, “May peace be in our homes and communities,” in English, Hebrew, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Algonquin and Swedish.

“Shalom is hello and goodbye,” Cibura said. “It is used mainly as a greeting. It’s a sign of peace and welcoming to the community.”

From 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday, and from 9 to 11 a.m. or noon every Sunday, volunteers come to work on the sections of the mural, Cibura said.

All are welcome to participate in the creation of the next sections, he said.

“You just show up, and we will teach you how to cut tile,” Cibura said. “We have gloves.

We have protection material for eyes. We put some music on, and we put it together.”

Also as part of the unveiling, Kent Gallagher, president of the Geneva Foundation for the Arts, presented a check for $1,000 to the Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors as a grant in support of the mosaic mural project.

“They applied for a grant,

and we approved of it,” Gallagher said. “And we are giving them two checks for $1,000 each – one now and one upon completion to help with the expenses.”

Mim Evans, a member of the Neighbors group, said the grant will cover about half the cost of materials, with the rest coming from members’ donations. Donations from the public are welcome through the group’s website, www. fvjn.org.

As sections are completed, they will be displayed in a vacant storefront at 17 S. Third St., Evans said.

The mirror for the mosaic was donated by E&T Glass and Mirror, and tile was donated by The Tile Shop, both in Geneva. But in addition to the tile and mirror, Neighbors member Alysa Hwalisz said the artist asked participants to contribute a piece of China from home.

“To be broken and included,” Hwalisz said. “For posterity.”

SUGAR GROVE – The 29-year-old Hinckley man who had been sought by police after an incident that took place Tuesday afternoon has been located, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Hageman was found at a hospital, according to Matthew Lt. Pat Gengler, Hageman the spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

“He was located at an area hospital and is in a secured medical ward,” Gengler wrote Thursday morning in an email, bolding the word “secured.”

“He will be turned over to us at the time of his release.”

Gengler stated he could not provide exact details about which hospital he was in or Hageman’s condition at this time.

According to a news release issued Wednesday, Hageman

was stopped by deputies about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday. The release indicated Hageman was driving a Chevrolet Blazer and was stopped at a gas station at Route 47 and Cross Street in Sugar Grove. Police said he drove away as they were talking to him.

The release added Hageman headed south on Route 47 and made his way into a field on the south side of Sugar Grove. Police said the pursuit had ended, but deputies observed Hageman heading west in a field before entering the roadway near Route 30 and Dugan Road.

He drove west on Route 30 before being pulled over, but then fled on foot, the release indicated. He eventually was located in a cornfield near the intersection of Route 30 and Dauberman Road, where police had set up a perimeter.

Hageman was taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, police said. The release indicated his injuries were minor, and he was admitted overnight for treatment. Police

Take the Halloween scare out of road rage Clogging rush hour traffic, October’s road construction sparks road rage better than a dropped cigarette in a droughtdry forest.

Imagine: You’re driving under a rainbow canopy of maple leaves through a friendly town when, on its outskirts, a car pulls alongside you just as a sign forewarns single-lane merge. You speed up because, well, because you can. Besides, you’re a more important and deserving human being than the twerp beside you.

When the twerp also speeds up, you accelerate faster. So does the twerp. Finally, at the point of collision, you relent, silently applauding your sacrifice for the sake of decency, traffic flow and avoiding a higher insurance rate.

The twerp does, however, need to pay for such indelicate behavior, and you collect by tailgating the offending car, which then slows to a crawl to hassle you. You turn on your brights.

The twerp brakes hard; you squeal to a stop; and the idiot behind you honks, like you’re the idiot.

My wife tells me this scenario – and hundreds like it – occurs daily on her commute to Wheaton. Leaving Geneva traveling east, Route 38 traffic backs up to Kautz Road where two lanes merge to one beyond the train overpass.

Now imagine a different scene: You’re walking under a rainbow canopy of maple leaves through a friendly town when a fellow pedestrian pulls alongside you just as the sidewalk narrows. You turn to each other, offer a smile, and wave your new BFF on ahead.

Why, I wonder, do folks who succumb to road rage act obligingly when strolling down sidewalks? Why don’t we ever hear about river-path shooters, hiker hatred or pedestrian petulance?

We clank along, swiveling our egos like gun turrets, ready to blast out of the way anyone brazen enough to drive like we do.

Most of us live relatively lowkey lives until someone screeches out in front of us, doesn’t signal a lane change or goes 25 in a 45. Then our Bruce Banner personality freaks out and goes all Hulk on us.

But it doesn’t only happen on the highway.

Road rage occurs in non vehicular situations, too. We castigate politicians for being either a tyrant or do-nothing, like people driving too fast or too slow. We disparage people who speak with a foreign accent (like Mexican, Asian or Texan), like incorrect lane usage. We denounce neighbors who allow front yard thistles, like our hometown ignoring its potholes.

We yell when lazy kids leave the door open, like bloated silver Buick LeSabres hogging not one parking space, but two.

Next time any twerps encourage your road rage – on the highway or off – imagine strolling beside them under clouds of sunset-colored leaves.

As the path narrows, signal, “Please, after you,” your gesture warm and genuine as a baby’s first smile.

Being lazy shouldn’t disqualify you from voting BLOOMBERG NEWS If California is a national trendsetter, there’s reason to be optimistic about the future of voting in the U.S. Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed a bill making California the second state, after Oregon, to adopt automatic voter registration.

The idea is simple enough: Because people submit official proof of identity and residency when registering for a driver’s license, why force them to resubmit that proof to register to vote?

California automatically will enroll eligible drivers as voters, after giving them the chance to opt out.

In most states, registering to vote is simple enough: Print out a form (or get one from a govern-

ment office) and mail it in.

Twenty-six states also offer online registration. Nevertheless, millions of Americans are eligible to vote but are not registered. And the fact so many people – most of them able-bodied – just don’t bother speaks to laziness, indifference or cynicism. Or all three.

Voting is more than an individual right, however. It’s a public good, the foundation of democracy.

So the government has a compelling interest in making registration as easy as possible.

Some states are moving in the opposite direction.

In Arizona and Kansas, voters must show proof of citizenship – a birth certificate or passport, for example – to register.

But requiring citizens to

prove their status creates a far bigger problem than the one it solves. Very few of the roughly 24 million noncitizens who live in the U.S. register to vote, and even fewer cast ballots.

A more efficient way to ensure only citizens are on the voter rolls is for government agencies to share information. Many people submit proof of citizenship when getting a driver’s license. And states such as California that issue driver’s licenses to noncitizens also know which drivers should not be registered to vote.

The right to be lazy is not in the Constitution, but it is a profoundly American one. And all American citizens, lazy or not, should be ensured the right to vote.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Rosary freshman Maria Goheen hopes she’ll look back on Thursday as the beginning of a decorated IHSA girls tennis state tournament career.

Until then, she needed Royals coach John Tsang to verify the site of her maiden state breakthrough: Three wins in as many matches in which she yielded just four games.

It was at Hersey, for the record, where Goheen defeated Jessica Chen of Neuqua Valley, Megan Davy of Morris and Edwardsville’s Callaghan Adams. This morning, she’ll shift to Buffalo Grove for a fourthround match against Michelle Linden of Barrington. A victory would put Goheen, a Royals tennis legacy, in the quarterfinals after a nearly flawless opening day.

“I was able to get my shots in. I was able to get to the ball good. My timing was good,” Goheen said. “I was able to keep the girls back and not let them attack too much, just use angles and stuff.

“I know that I still have a long way, but it feels good to win all those matches today.

I’m happy with how I played.”

Goheen is the lone Kane County Chronicle-area state qualifier remaining in the championship draw of the double-elimination tournament, which continues today and concludes Saturday.

Three doubles teams are alive in the backdraw, two from St. Charles North and one from Aurora Christian.

Spartans may be without starting QB in must-win game

With opposition such as Montini, St. Laurence and De La Salle, St. Francis has had to deal with its fair share of adversity.

But the difficulties of a competitive conference have been the least of the Spartans’ worries after quarterback Peter Fassnacht left last week’s game with concussion-like symptoms. After losing top receiving threat Mike Beach to a torn ACL in Week 4, the St. Francis offense hasn’t looked nearly as strong.

One could say playing the teams the Spartans have also could have an affect on the offense’s rhythm, but losing Fassnacht for tonight’s regular-season finale against Fenwick – a must-win game for the 4-4 Spartans’ playoff chances – would be detrimental.

“We’ve had this next-man -up mentality all season,” St. Francis running back Will Purdom said. “We have confidence in anyone that is going to step in and everyone on this team prepares like they’re going to start, no matter what position.”

Coach Mike Fitzgerald said Fassnacht is questionable, but did say if his senior quarterback is unable to go, junior John Brundage would get the start.

“We’ve dealt with several adverse situations this season, and we have continued

to try and overcome whatever we’ve had to,” Fitzgerald said. “It really is a next-man - up mindset, and the guys truly believe in that. It’s not easy, but it’s part of this game. We know we still have a chance to make the postseason, but it starts with a win against Fenwick, and that’s our primary focus.”

With four wins, St. Francis needs a win to become playoff eligible, which would then come down to playoff points. With blowout wins over Marmion (53-7), Kelvyn Park (46-0) and Chicago Catalyst/Maria (58-8) and a forfeit

making up the Spartans’ four wins, a statement win against Fenwick tonight is needed.

However, Fitzgerald said he has not looked at where his team stands in the playoff point race because if the Spartans don’t earn a victory tonight, it doesn’t matter.

“There’s no point worrying about that at this point,” Fitzgerald said. “If we don’t beat Fenwick, we don’t have any chance. We know there’s a chance if we do, so that’s our primary focus. We can’t worry about things out of our control. The one thing we do have control over is the outcome of this game, and that’s all we care about right now.”

In times of need, the Spartans have looked to veterans such as Purdom to lead the team. Although Fassnacht remains hopeful to play, he knows Purdom and company are more than capable of bringing home a victory whether or not he’s on the field.

“Especially for the seniors, we know from here on out, it could be the last football game ever for us,” Fassnacht said. “It’s clear the amount of effort that has been given in practice, and we know how important it is to leave everything out on the field.”

“The word of the week has been to finish,” Purdom said. “We know the challenge ahead of us, but we need to take care of what we can control. We need a victory against Fenwick and that’s the bottom line. We need to finish what we started.”

Batavia coach Dennis Piron was named Chicago Bears High School Football “Coach of the Week” for Week 8.

The Bulldogs’ 24-14 win over Geneva clinched at least a share of their fifth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title and was the program’s 30th straight River win.

Piron will be invited to the Bears game against the Washington Redskins on Dec. 13, where he will be joined by the fellow 2015 recipients of the award for an on-field pregame photo, and will also receive framed certificate signed by Bears head coach John Fox. Currently in his fifth season as Batavia head coach, Piron has not lost a River game, including in 2013 when he directed Batavia to the Class 6A state title.

The message from Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly is pretty simple. There’s no need to have the worry of playoff points if the Knights take care of business tonight at Rochelle.

Kaneland will take the 40-minute ride to Rochelle to face the Hubs in the Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover game. The teams are quite familiar with each other from years as conference rivals, but have an extreme contrast in styles of play.

“You know in any Kaneland-Rochelle game that physicality is going to play a part,” Fedderly said. “The message this week is win and we’re in. The guys know what a win means, and we want to go down there and take care of business.”

The marquee matchup

The main difference in these two teams’ style of play is the offenses. Hubs coach Kevin Crandall said if his team could hold the ball for 44 minutes of the game, that would be ideal. While that might be a stretch, Crandall wants to do just that behind a Wing-T attack.

Rochelle is primarily a run-based offense, featuring sophomore fullback Jarod Scarbrough and senior tailback James Porter.

Senior quarterback Chayce Sullivan also has the ability to run the ball.

“We have had a tough time consistently moving the ball down the field,” Crandall said. “I have been here for 22 years and we’re not changing anything up at this

point. We are going to stick to what we do and continue to get better at it with the youth that we have.”

Crandall hopes the time of possession is quite one-sided in the Hubs’ favor.

Keep Marczuk off the field for a long as possible. Crandall joked about wanting the ball for 44 minutes tonight – that’s most of the game – but in a way, the Hubs need that. Maybe not to that extent, but as long the Knights’ offense is off the field, Crandall can be comfortable knowing that Marczuk won’t hurt the Hubs. When on the field, Rochelle will need to make sure to contain Marczuk or it’s going to be a long night.

Jake Marczuk has been making the Kaneland offense go all season. If Rochelle doesn’t contain the dual-threat Knights’ quarterback, the Hubs could be in for a long game. Fedderly doesn’t expect the Knights to have a ton of possession, as history in this series has shown, and knows how important it is for the offense to come out and make a statement from its opening drive.

“He’s hard to defend,” Crandall said of Marczuk. “We need to make sure we contain him and not let him create plays.”

“When Jake is operating in both the pass and run games, our offense clicks,” Fedderly said. “We want to be multi-dimensional because it makes us so much more tough to defend.”

Marczuk had his best rushing output of the season in Week 7, carrying the ball 17 times for 185 yards and three scores in a 23-7 win at Morris.

Best-case scenario for the Knights If the Knights score early and see Marczuk find space, it’s all systems go from there. When facing a run-based offense, it’s always important to get ahead early and try to take the opposition out of

SPORTS BRIEFS BC girls v’ball clinches BNC East GENOA – The Burlington Central girls volleyball team completed an unbeaten run to the Big Northern Conference East title on Thursday, defeating Genoa-Kingston, 25-20, 22-25, 27-25.

The Rockets won each of their 14 conference matches, including an earlier three-setter against the Cogs when Genoa-Kingston visited Burlington last month. BC could potentially face the Cogs again if both teams advance to the Class 3A Sycamore Sectional final.

Kaneland girls v’ball falls MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland girls volleyball team fell on its senior night to Yorkville, 25-18, 24-26, 25-16, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East Division match Thursday. The St. Charles North Invitational at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles, held Oct. 3, introduced boys and girls cross country runners to a hillier course at the longtime race venue than they’re typically accustomed.

Oakes facelift on XC runners’ minds The hills are alive at the recently reconfigured cross country course at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles, site of Saturday’s Class 3A St. Charles North Regional.

Unless veteran boys and girls runners concerned about the changes uncover extra eligibility, their state series will begin with a steeper reality than past seasons.

“When you’ve got a new course, there’s a lot of ruts and things like that,” Batavia boys coach Bronco Meeks said. “So it’s still got to be run on a few times before it gets smooth.”

Officials amended the direction of the course in a bid to make it more challenging.

Meeks contends that it turned LeRoy Oakes into “an actual cross country course” given the greater patches of uneven footing and sequences of hills.

Although there’s no overwhelmingly daunting incline, knowing there are more hills to tackle enters an athlete’s psyche and affects his or her pre-race approach.

Altmayer didn’t exactly disappear when the new course debuted at the St. Charles North Invitational three weekends ago. She won the girls race in 17:44.8, a time 2.4 seconds slower than her third-place effort at St. Charles East’s annual Leavey Invitational in early September.

Saturday’s atmosphere figures to provide an additional boost. At least it has in past seasons.

“With our training, especially, our coach (Bob Thomson) really emphasizes this is where we’re just starting to peak and we’re starting to get

our speed workouts down,” Altmayer said. “It’s really exciting once we get into state series. My legs start to feel like they’re really ready to move.”

Her arms – and those of the rest of her girls and boys counterparts – should be ready to do the same. That’s one of the tenets of hill running.

The East boys won last week’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division meet at the flatter and more residential Sunrise Park in Bartlett, but Saints coach Chris Bosworth drills his athletes to stay close to one another, no matter the terrain.

“At practice, everything is based on running and training together,” Bosworth said.

“If you can do that through the season, throughout the year, it kind of just translates to racing.”

Pack it up, in other words.

Don’t pack it in.

Pool pride: Seven teams representing 10 schools will descend on the St. Charles North pool for the Upstate Eight Conference girls swim-

ming and diving meet Oct. 31.

A handful of the usual suspects won’t be on deck, however, as this fall marks the first without Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley together in the UEC. “The Valleys” joined the DuPage Valley Conference before the season.

“It’s going to be different with the mix of those teams out,” East coach Joe Cabel said. “It’ll be a lot different conference.”

The league includes three co-ops: West Chicago-Batavia, Elgin-Larkin and Bartlett-Streamwood.

“We’ve got quite a few kids from our club down there,” Cabel said. “West Chicago’s gotten better because of that co-op.”

On Oct, 11, motorcyclists gathered from multiple registration and collection points for the 29th annual DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run, eventually heading to a central staging area in Elburn for a fully escorted parade to Batavia, led by Santa Claus, as well as many area lawmakers, including Gov. Bruce Rauner, a news release stated from DuKane A.B.A.T.E. “With a little help from Mother Nature in the form of an almost summer-like day, participation exceeded expectations,” the release stated.

Free, the Elburn Food Pantry, the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, Feed’em Soup Community Project, Aunt Martha’s and Between Friends, the release stated.

“It’s an amazing thing to see people responding like this,” Elliott said. “People were still wanting to bring in donations the following day!”

DuKane Chapter President Judy Kaenel also weighed in on this year’s event.

“We can’t overlook the efforts of the seven area motorcycle dealerships that collected donations and served as remote registration points for the parade,” she said in the release. “Over the past few years, what began as a friendly competition between the dealerships has picked up steam.

We saw dealers posting promotional videos on social media and offering perks, such as free food, in order to attract more registrants.”

Kaenel is emphatic about the impact the dealers made – along with a host of volunteers, both on-site and off, the release stated.

“This is what the motorcycling community does, again and again and again,” she said

• Stay away from situations where you will be with smokers or exposed to secondhand smoke.

• Avoid foods, beverages and situations that you strongly associate with having cigarettes.

Typical examples include drinking alcohol, having a cup of coffee and going out to a bar.

• When you feel the urge to smoke, replace it with several deep, slow breaths followed by a drink of water.

• Do not get discouraged if your first attempt is not successful. Realize that most successful ex-smokers quit for good only after several attempts.

• If you slip and have a cigarette, make a decision to quit again immediately.

• Some people find that alternative therapies, such as hypnosis or acupuncture, can help.

So although it is not easy to do, you can quit smoking: There are more ex-smokers in the United States today than there are smokers.

Dr. Wallace: Now that marijuana is available to purchase legally in several states, has the percentage of teens using marijuana gone up significantly?

I ask this because I’m a teacher in Colorado and would like to share this information with my drug prevention class. Colorado is a state that recently passed a law that made marijuana legally available for purchase. This is a very interesting topic in our class. – Teacher, Denver, Colo.

Teacher: According to data

from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, teen marijuana use held steady in 2014, the first year that Colorado and Washington allowed legal marijuana sales. 7.4 percent of those teens between the ages of 12 to 17 used marijuana at least once monthly.

That number was up by only 0.3 percentage points from 2013. Time will determine the effect of the new law on the use of marijuana by teens, especially if other states join Colorado and Washington.

Dear Dr. K: I’m doing my best to quit smoking, but I am really struggling with the symptoms of withdrawal. Do you have any advice?

Dear Reader: You’re not alone. Beating an addiction is not easy, but you can do it. And there are new treatments today that make it easier to do.

Physical withdrawal symptoms make stopping any addictive drug uncomfortable. Nicotine – the addictive drug in tobacco – is one of the most difficult to beat. Withdrawal symptoms are the reason many people don’t manage to quit smoking.

These include intense cravings, irritability, fatigue and inability to concentrate. They can begin within a few hours of the last cigarette. (On my website, AskDoctorK. com, I’ve put a list of the most common withdrawal symptoms and ways to cope with them.)

It might help to know that withdrawal symptoms are worst during the first two or three days after quitting. Remind yourself that if you make it over this initial hurdle, you’ve already done the hardest part. Your symptoms will gradually improve over the next month or more.

When you start to crave a cigarette, try to wait out the urge by distracting yourself or taking a brisk walk. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can also help you get through the cravings.

Nicotine replacement products are available as patches, gums, nasal sprays, inhalers and lozenges. Two medications, varenicline (Chantix) and bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) decrease the craving for nicotine and also decrease withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor about these drugs.
