Retail center planned for Avenue Motor Sales building in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A developer plans to demolish the building that formerly housed Avenue Motor Sales in Batavia and build a retail center.

After being open for more than 80 years, Avenue Motor Sales, which was at McKee Street and Randall Road, shut its doors in December 2011.

The business had been selling used cars after being dropped as a Chevrolet dealership.

The dealership stopped selling new Chevrolet vehicles in November 2010.

Batavia Enterprises Real Estate has been marketing the property.

Austin Dempsey, of Batavia Enterprises Real Estate, said his company is under contract with a Wisconsin developer that plans to raze the building and build a retail center on the property.

Dempsey said he could not provide further details about the project. Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said the project was positive news.

“We would welcome redevelopment of the site,” Buening said.

Avenue Motor Sales President John Clark’s grandfather, William H. Clark, started Avenue Motor Sales in 1930 on Batavia Avenue in downtown Batavia before the dealership moved to Randall Road. Before General Motors took away Avenue’s franchise, the dealership had employed 48 employees and was doing well, John Clark said at the time.

“We were forced out of business,” he said at the time.

Sugar Grove church sets spaghetti dinner fundraiser

St. Charles Park District offers wide array of activities

The St. Charles Park District offers fencing, archery, ice skating, karate, tennis and other activities that don’t necessarily require large teams of individuals to participate at one time.

And while there is certainly a strong element of fun and competition involved, karate classes for children as young as 4 years of age not only provide a rigorous athletic workout, but they also instill lifeskill principles in areas such as health, hygiene, nutrition and rest. At the same time the classes are strengthening bodies, they are sharpening minds through exercises that demand focus and concentration, and developing character and confidence through drills that build self-esteem and instill lasting knowledge of personal safety.

Other alternative athletics also combine similar mental and physical disciplines. The ancient sport of archery hits the bull’s-eye with its dual requirements of mental concentration and physical control.

And just as the centuries-old regimen of fencing may conjure up images of pirates and knights medieval, this fast-paced sport of swordsmanship also incorporates el-

ements of power, strategy and finesse that require a sharp mind and strong body.

Although part of the course curriculum involves practicing falling down, finesse of another sort is almost compulsory in ice skating. The park district’s Skate School programs can help young skaters achieve both the grace to glide across a winter’s pond and the grit to compete on a hockey rink.

With techniques like forward swizzles and backward wiggles, the elements of basic ice skating can appeal to the young and young at heart, while serious ice athletes can learn how to develop the agility and speed to score in the hockey rink.

Agility and speed are equally handy skills to have on the tennis court, and tennis lessons for children ages 6 to 12 can help them jump into the game through the Quickstart method recommended by the United States Tennis Association. Whether

for recreation or competition, tennis lessons are not only fun, but they also can start a student on the way to USTA certification at beginner and advanced-beginner levels.

An added bonus for many of the alternative athletic programs offered by the park district is they are available to students and adults alike, making them ideal parent-child activities. Horseback riding is one such sport where the basic elements of good horsemanship are available to children, as well

as adults. Following focused training on safety, grooming and tacking, aspiring equestrians of all ages learn the specific skills of both English and Western styles of riding.

So, whether one’s arena is the ice rink or the dusty trail, whether the adversary is met across a tennis net or at the end of a fencing blade, there is a vast array of athletic opportunities available through the park district’s sports and fitness programs. Not every sport is played on a court or a field or a diamond. Nor does every player need to prove him or herself by competing against a team of 11 or nine or five other athletes.

Sometimes it may be a more invigorating challenge to go head-to-head against just one other person. Even, and maybe especially, if that other player is yourself.

When parents are considering athletic pursuits for their children, the “Big Four” come to mind: football, soccer, baseball and basketball. All worthy sports. But sometimes it’s nice to think outside the box to find a game that requires a different set of skills or a fitness regimen that takes a more individualized approach.

From archery to fencing, horseback riding to ice skating, karate to tennis, the park district offers dozens of classes in sports that can appeal to both team players and lone rangers.

“We hope to give children and parents a wide menu to choose from,” said Melissa Caine, athletic programs supervisor. “These athletic activities are alternatives to the everyday experience, and they can help develop a more athletically well-rounded child.”

There is often a philosophical, as well as a physical component, to many of these athletic programs, particularly the popular varieties of martial arts classes offered by the park district.

Shotokan, tae kwan do and hap ki do karate classes can attract athletes as young as 4 years of age. Each can provide a blend of training for strength, agility and coordination while imparting proven techniques for self-defense, all in a fun and encouraging environment.

“These appeal to parents and students who are looking for more of a discipline, rather than a game,” Caine said.

BatFest to feature family-friendly activities

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Those who plan to attend Saturday’s BatFest in downtown Batavia should start warming up their pumpkin-rolling arm.

BatFest once again will feature a pumpkin-rolling contest, in which participants will have the opportunity to roll a pumpkin down Houston Street and see how far it will go.

The event is one of the activities featured in BatFest, which is organized by Batavia MainStreet.

The pumpkin-rolling contest will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other pumpkin-related activities include a pumpkin carving contest at 1 p.m. at the Peg Bond Center at Houston Street and North Island Avenue and a pumpkin seed-spitting contest.

Children also can get a head start on their trick-ortreating, as that is part of the festival.

In conjunction with BatFest, Music Matters School of Music will hold its first fall festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its new location in the historic former Louise White School building at 24 N. Washington St. Activities include a petting zoo, rides on a trackless train, a bouncy house, arts and crafts and live music.

Performers will include professional guitarist and Music Matters instructor John Ivan, as well as Green Eggs and Sam, which is a band featuring local teens.

School director Jeff Matter, who also will be judging the BatFest costume contest, said the school wanted to hold the festival in conjunction with the festival.

“There should be a lot of happy kids there,” Matter said.

U.S. Bank building to become Batavia police officer center for independent workers struck during incident

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A new business, 25N Coworking Community, has bought the former U.S. Bank building at 25 N. Third St. in Geneva, officials said.

Company founder Mara Hauser said the 10,000-squarefoot building is under renovation and will be open for business Jan. 5. It took 10 months to find the right space, she said.

Coworking provides a professional environment for virtual employees, freelance workers and entrepreneurs to work, have meetings and network, she said.

“You might have a home office, and you might want to work there some of the time but not all the time,” Hauser said. “It’s for freelancers, independent contractors, small business owners or someone with a small business with

employees who are virtual – that is, you are working for a company but working out of your home.”

At 3:05 a.m., a Batavia police officer was injured while attempting to make contact with a suspicious subject in the far northwest corner of Green Meadows near 1179 W. Wilson St., according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.

‘Great Decisions’ to be held at St. Charles library ST. She enjoyed 20 memorable retirement years in Santa Fe, NM before returning to Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents,William J. and Mabel E. Mather; and her brother. Charles.

Starting in nursery school, she received all of her education from the University of Chicago, completing her Bachelor of Philosophy degree before marrying William Alexander Greene of Aurora, IL on January 27, 1947. She was an active member of several community organizations including the YWCA, AAUW, Tuesday Garden Club, Santa Fe Desert Chorale and Minerva Coterie.

She was a patron of the arts, a skilled gardener, a voracious reader, a self-driven thinker, passionately curious, and a woman of great spirit. Marjory was a whirlwind of energy and excitement in the lives of all around her. She cared deeply for family and friends near and far, staying connected through her prolific correspondence and “clipping service.” She loved a good party.

Her life was richly lived as wife, mother of three, grandmother of nine and great grandmother of eleven, though she rarely felt old enough to have earned the title of matriarch over such a large crowd.

Her memory is cherished by Alex, her husband of 67 years; children, Judy Shepard (Charles) of Winona MN, Gordon Greene (Patricia) of Spring Green WI, Kathy Ball (George) of Aurora IL; grandchildren, Christopher Shepard (Mari) of San Rafael CA, Peter Shepard (Megan) of Santa Fe NM, Thomas Shepard (Marit) of Minneapolis MN, Laura Greene of Eugene OR , Alex Greene of Madison WI, Samuel Greene of Oxford England, Gregory Ball (Emily) of Hudson WI, Sarah Bimber (Benjamin) of Portland OR and Elizabeth Holmquist (Carl) of

WINONA M. MITCHELTREE Born: Oct. 19, 1932 Died: Oct. 20, 2014 Winona M. Mitcheltree (nee Moroney), age 82, of Aurora, and recently of Batavia, passed away peacefully and went to be with her Lord on October 20, 2014. She was born October 19, 1932, in Aurora, to Thornton and Hermina (nee Scholl) Moroney.

Winona attended Mary A. Todd Grade School, graduated with West Aurora High School Class of 1950, and attended Ritchie Secretarial School and Aurora College. She was a legal secretary for 2 years and then an executive secretary for 3 years with Thor Power Tool Company and 11 years with Northern Illinois Gas Company, retiring when blessed with her first child.

On September 23, 1961, she was united in marriage to Albert R. Mitcheltree, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aurora. They were married over 41 years until Albert went to be with his Lord in 2003. He has now welcomed his loving wife into Heaven.

Winona was a lifelong member of Our Savior, from a little girl attending church in The Healy Chapel while the church building was completed, through baptism, confirmation, marriage and raising her family in the same church. Winona was an

active member of Our Savior where she enjoyed friendships and fellowship and served as a Trustee, Bible School Teacher and choir member.

She will be remembered for her love of her family and her saving faith and love in Jesus Christ as her Savior.

She always gave her all and best to her family and friends, and with anything with which she was involved.

Winona gave her time and talents to many and served in organizations such as Aurora Business and Professional Women’s Club, Fox Valley Christian Women’s Club, YMCA-YWCA Adult Programs, Parent Teacher Associations and the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. In addition to the church choir, her beautiful soprano voice was heard for many years with Aurora Festival Chorus. She also was active with the Fox Valley Hiking Club for well over 40 years.

Winona is survived by God’s gift of four loving children, David (Laurie Benton) Mitcheltee and grandson Jack and granddaughter Kate of Issaquah, WA; Laura Mitcheltree of North Aurora, IL; Mark Mitcheltree of Haines, AK; and Brad (Jennifer) Mitcheltree and grandsons Stuart and Larkin of Fort Collins, CO. Many dear family members and so many dear friends, all of who have brightened her earthly life, also survive her.

She was preceded in death by many family members and friends and has now met them again in Heaven.

A funeral service celebrating her life and faith will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, 420 W. Downer Place, Aurora, IL. Rev. Jeff Mikyska will officiate.

Interment will take place in Lincoln Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2014, at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Place, Aurora, IL and one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday, at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, 420 W. Downer Place, Aurora.

Robert “Bob” Charles Black of Maple Park, passed away at his residence on October 21, 2014. He was born on July 14, 1928 to Orval and Maude Allen Black, previously from Downers Grove.

His tall stature, signature dark blue hat, and cigar were his trademarks over the many years that he owned and operated Lawndale Auto Body in Berwyn; and in later years, Blacks Auto Rebuilders in Geneva. Only two years ago, he finally retired and sold the business, which he loved so dearly, to his loyal and trusted friend, Bill White, who renamed the shop, State Street Collision. Bob was well known locally for his widespread support of so many civic associations and causes.

He was predeceased by his second wife, Eleanor.

He is survived by his children, Robert W., Michael, Bonnie, and Candee, all of Florida; step-children, Barbara, and Michael; brother, Judge William Black; sister-inlaw, Charlene; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Barbara E. Baert, age 78, of Sycamore, formerly of St. Charles, passed away Monday, October 20, 2014, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva surrounded by her family.

She was born January 22, 1936, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Webster and Helen (Powell) Sandy.

Barbara worked for many years as a secretary at Haines Jr. High School in St. Charles. Later she worked for DuPage Airport, a realty company, and lastly Driessen Construction Co. Barbara spent a lot of time reading and enjoyed listening to music. She also loved to watch CSI and Criminal Minds. Barbara was an avid Bulls fan. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and found great joy in spending time with her large family. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

Kane County to renew contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Despite considering another insurance provider, Kane County will remain with Blue Cross Blue Shield, pending County Board approval next month.

The Human Services Committee on Wednesday recommended approval of resolutions authorizing Chairman Chris Lauzen to enter into contracts for health, dental and vision insurance with Blue Cross, Guardian and Delta, respectively.

Health costs are split and are covered 83 percent by the employer and 17 percent by the employee. Open enrollment begins next week.

Laurence Marx of Global Benefits Group – a Libertyville-based employee benefits consulting firm – said the renewal with Blue Cross will result in a projected increase of 6.19 percent.

The best alternative was Cigna, Marx said. But, he said, an analysis supported staying with Blue Cross.

Lauzen said the county has submitted questions about the group administration document to Blue Cross. His

St. Charles police offer Halloween safety tips ST. CHARLES – With trick-or-treating set for Oct. 31, the St. Charles Police Department issued a news release sharing safety tips to make sure the night is safe and enjoyable for all.

Hours for trick-or-treating are 3 to 7 p.m. in St. Charles.

Motorists should take extra precautions and be more observant during this time for children who might not be as watchful for traffic.

Residents also are encouraged to use outside lighting for the safety of trick-or-treaters.

We can work it out To all the soccer moms and recreational league soccer coaches out there, I have simply one request, and that is to please be kind to your teen referee. Thank you.

For the past two years, I’ve been a referee for a recreational soccer league during the spring and fall time. I normally referee 9-year-old girls, and let me tell you, the job is entertaining. I get to spend time with adorable kids as they play a sport that they’re passionate about, so what’s not to like? Well ... .

Soccer moms, for one.

They’re easy to spot; usually they lurk around in the suburbs and drive a cluttered minivan filled with future superstar athletes. They chauffeur their kids to soccer practices and play dates, all while managing to plop a quick meal in the oven for dinner before five o’clock.

They often do anything to make their children content, whether that’s buying them a box of Twinkies or the newest video game.

Yeah, these women sound all sweet. But no, their looks are deceiving. I can assure you that some (not all) of these “soccer moms” are vicious while they watch their kids play soccer. While refereeing, I have seen many women who just go ballistic while their kids run around and try to kick a ball into a net. There are even some moms who order their child to attack other players, and that just makes me cringe.

Recreational soccer is supposed to be where kids learn about teamwork, not tearing each other to bits. Besides, most 9-year-olds don’t know the difference between a goal kick and corner kick call, so why do some moms act like their kid is in the FIFA World Cup? Let’s just tell Little Susie over there to play nice, please.

This leads me to the coach-

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina es. For the league I referee for, the coaches are volunteer parents. I’ve met so many down-to-earth and respectable coaches, but there’s always one or two coaches a season that usually make me want to pound my head against a wall.

I’ve learned to recognize the “scary” coaches. These parents always start off all friendly when I introduce myself, and by halftime their true colors show. They question everything I do and call out every play of the game as if they’re the referee.

Basically, they steal my job since they think their opinion overrides mine. I’m sure other referees can relate when I confess that I’ve had coaches argue with me over a call and claim I don’t know what I’m doing.

By now, I’ve learned to just shake off the negative comments. In all honesty, there’s a reason why I referee for a recreational league. Emphasis on recreational.

So, to all the soccer moms and coaches of the world, please remember that none of the young players care who wins the game because they just want to have fun with their friends. As a teen referee, I can confirm a majority of the players only care about the after-game snack of juice boxes and cookies. Admittedly, when I played soccer, that’s the one thing I always looked forward to.

During this time, Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District officials have proven fiscal responsibility by incurring no debt to the taxpayers of the fire district while still being able to purchase property and construct a new fire station No. 1 in Elburn and open a third fire station in Lily Lake.

In addition to the fire stations, district officials have also been able to continue to purchase and upgrade fire and ambulance apparatus and fire

and EMS supplies, with all of the most modern equipment available.

District officials have also made it possible to hire and further educate and promote their own fire district firefighters and paramedics so that most – if not all – have excelled in their positions within the department to achieve further education and skills, which is not only a benefit to the individual, but also a tremendous asset to the department.

What does this means to you? This was all done without any debt. You, as the resident of Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, have the most to gain from everything mentioned above.

As a former paid on-call member for the Elburn and Countryside fire department, I can say with certainty that every patient and every piece of property involved in any incident, medical or otherwise, is treated with dignity and respect, as if it were their own.

Each member of the department carries a sense of pride knowing that they have been given the best training and best equipment available to perform their task.

I ask for your support by voting against disconnection from the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

Musician Ed Anderson to perform Saturday Singer to take stage in Batavia at Kiss the Sky

The album was produced by saxophonist Steve Berlin, best known for being a member of the band Los Lobos. Anderson, a 1990 St. Charles High School graduate, will perform an acoustic show Saturday, Oct. 25, at Kiss The Sky record store, 180 First St., Batavia.

The show starts at 8 p.m., and there is a $10 cover charge. Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Anderson about his current activities.

This will be Anderson’s last show in the Midwest before Anderson and his wife head south for the winter.

“The Memory of Water” is about three sisters who come home to plan a funeral for their mother, who has recently died after a battle with Alzheimer’s. As plans are made and stories of the past are shared, the sisters soon realize they don’t always share the same memory of events. Sisters Mary, Teresa and Catherine use humor – and bickering – to deal with their loss.

“I’m drawn to the characters in this script,” said director Veronica Krystal in a news release. “They are all very flawed, but they don’t try to come off as perfect people. Despite the fact they cannot agree on their shared memories, they all still come together in memory of their mother, who had flaws of her own.”

school’s head count isn’t everything when it comes to athletic prowess, as Friday’s 42-0 triumph for the St. Charles North football team over St. Charles East reinforced.

But the enrollment gap between the St. Charles high schools has widened in recent years, putting the North Stars on more challenging competitive footing against the crosstown Saints and other larger competitors in the area.

East’s overall enrollment (2,504) is more than 500 students larger than North’s this year, continuing the recent trend of East’s student population rising as North’s falls.

District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann

acknowledged the current gap might be larger than the district would want, saying a spread closer to 300 probably would be more ideal. Still, he considers it logical for East to house more students.

“East does have more square footage than North so from a facilities standpoint, you do have capacity to have more students [at East],” Schlomann said. “Now we did move some portables from North to East that accommodates some more classroom space that was needed. They do have better athletic facilities [at East] from the standpoint of more square feet, not necessarily better.”

Last school year, East reported more than 100 student-athletes than at North participated in at least one sport, and that gap figures to increase in 2014-15 given the

continuation of the schools’ enrollment trends.

Schlomann said boundary changes in the district predating his 2007 arrival were made in anticipation of continued growth on the city’s north and west ends, which would have padded North’s enrollment. But the economic collapse that followed clogged the pipeline of future North Stars.

Schlomann said only recently have the affects of the boundary change taken full effect since many family members were “grandfathered in,” allowing them to still attend North as their siblings had.

Coaches at North say the thinning enrollment – especially relative to East’s growth – has not gone unnoticed.

North blanks Elk Grove in semi

Such was the case Wednesday in the IHSA Class 3A Elk Grove Regional semifinal at Elk Grove, where the No. 4-seeded St. Charles North boys soccer team defeated the 15th-seeded Elk Grove Grenadiers, 2-0.

The North Stars (11-5-4) will face Rolling Meadows at 3 p.m. Saturday in the regional championship match.

“In a game like this, you want to jump on teams (like Elk Grove) as quickly as you can and get that first goal,” North Stars defender Nick Graham said. “I think once we scored that first goal, we got out-worked for a lot of the first half by them. At halftime we talked about

by junior midfielder Alex Amro, and Graham got a head onto the ball and placed it into the upper right corner of the Grens’ net past Centeno with 37:33 left in the opening half.

“In these playoffs, you just want to win and move on,” Graham said. ‘I guess I didn’t want to have this season end yet because I like playing with these guys.”

The North Stars would take back control of the match in the second half and added on to their lead when Amro sent a crossing pass into the Grens’ penalty area where senior midfielder Zach Morgando controlled a loose ball and from 14 yards out sent a right-footed shot past Centeno into the net for 2-0 advantage with 25:16 remaining in regulation time.

Football is a sport in which developing depth through raw numbers on a roster is especially crucial. This year’s North Stars qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2009.

“I know that before I got here when they re-established the boundaries … those are kids that drive past this school to get to East, and I know that a lot of those kids would help our program,” second-year North football coach Rob Pomazak said. “If I could have 500 more kids [in the school], and if 200 of them are boys, fine by me, I’ll take whatever we can get. It takes only one or two kids to change a program. That’s the truth.”

Poulin said he’s noticed participation in those three sports dip slightly, but not to the extent he thinks North is competitively handcuffed.

Poulin said he understands there are nonathletic benefits for a school to have more modest enrollment.

From a sports standpoint, however, he said he’d have reservations if the crosstown gap balloons further.

“As a coach, just from that perspective, I would be concerned if that number grew, and I think the majority of coaches would be, but it’s out of our hands, and really we do the best we can do with the situation you’re in, and really we love our situation,” Poulin said.

Schlomann said the enrollment ranges of East and North likely will remain relatively stable the next couple years, but longterm, a sharp decline is forecast for both schools.

According to Schlomann, considering the sizes of the current kindergarten class

in the district, enrollment at North could plunge to the 1,300 range and to the 1,700 range at East by the time those students complete their high school years.

D-303 is soon to launch a “citizen’s committee” that will work with the municipalities of St. Charles, Campton Hills, South Elgin and West Chicago in the coming months to scrutinize longer-range population projections.

Schlomann said those meetings should help determine whether the smaller, district-wide head counts are “the new normal, or an anomaly.”

In the meantime, East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld said the growing student body at East has not put much strain on the school’s practice space or staffing levels. While swelling to 2,500-plus students makes for a larger pool of Saints athletes, Sommerfeld said school size can be overstated as a competitive advantage.

“If the community values extra curriculars, then you tend to see those schools in those type of communities do well,” Sommerfeld said. “The schools that have good feeder programs and kids involved in youth sports before they get to high school, I think that’s the biggest correlation between success and non-success rather than the number of kids you have to choose from.”

North AD Dan Dolney said the school has been able to maintain solid programs despite the dipping enrollment, even seeing expanded participation in a few programs.

If North continues to shrink, however, options such as reducing levels offered in some sports might become a stronger possibility.

“You don’t want that to happen,” Dolney said. “You want to make sure you’re giving everyone who wants to play an opportunity, especially at the freshman and sophomore levels.”

Fox Valley Hawks gear up for nomadic season

By STEPHEN GORDON editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Home-ice advantage could be difficult to come by for the Fox Valley Hawks this season.

One of the biggest hurdles the team will face is a lack of consistent home ice to play games on and be seen by home fans.

The Hawks will play 35 games this year, 22 of which will be league games in the Illinois Suburban Hockey League, but only 10 games will be at the Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, the program’s traditional home. The remaining home games will be split between Addison Ice Arena in Addison and Carol Stream Ice Arena.

Most of the team’s practices will be held at Jet Ice Arena in St. Charles. There will also be away tournaments played in November and January.

“Fox Valley is a great rink to play at,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “But the rink caters to who pays them the most money. That would be the local club team based out of that rink. We will play a lot of away games this season be-

cause of that.”

The Hawks, 2-0 on the young season with 13 goals for and only two against, are led on offense by sophomore Josh Gadow (St. Charles East), senior Dillon George (St. Charles East) and junior Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North). They are backed by such defensemen as Giovanni Pompillo (St. Charles North) and Scott Sokniewicz (St. Charles East).

Goaltending duties this season will be handled by Batavia junior Aaron Karkos and Marmion sophomore Brett Hengesbaugh.

“I give the kids on this team a lot of credit for sticking it out this season with me,” Gabrielsen said. “For not playing many true home games and the travel we have to go through in playing games, as long as the kids are happy, they will tell their friends and the program will sell itself. We just have to get our name out there that we are a viable option to playing club hockey. Why would you not want to play for your school is what I wonder.”

The Hawks will play their first home game of the season at 9:40 p.m. Saturday at Fox

Valley Ice Arena against the Cobras of the ISHL. Gabrielsen, a Geneva resident, has more than 20 years of high school hockey coaching experience with stops at such places as Naperville North, St. Charles East and York. One would think he might prefer some weekend down time after spending 20 years of Sunday nights in hockey rinks from Geneva to Oak Park and all points in between.

“I was approach by the Fox Valley Hawks club in January of this year to see if I would be interested in taking over theprogram as coach,” he said.

“After attending a few games late last season, I decided to do it.”

Gabrielsen, along with his assistant coaches Mark Sokniewicz and Peter Garvey, who had been coaching with Gabrielsen since 2004, take over a program that returns all starters from last season.

late perfectly to the court.

“I try to apply it to my life. Volleyball’s very mental, it’s a game of mistakes. So psychology definitely helps you stay positive because you know you’re going to make mistakes,” Stone said. “That does help.”

It certainly helped a season ago, when as a freshman, Stone was tasked with learning and playing an entirely new position. A middle hitter, she was sent outside.

It involved leaving the front row and rotating all over the court.

It went well enough – she ranked third on the team in kills – but she’s happy to be back in the middle, what she refers to as “home.”

“Last year, I played out of my position. This year

“Last year, I played outside, and I played all the way around, which was very different for me because I am a middle and middles only play in the front row. So it was a big learning transition learning the whole back court, too.

On the surface, none of that seems to have much to do with spiking a volleyball or blocking an opponent’s shot. But the psychology student in Stone should know that everything’s mental.

“It was the first college I actually visited, and I just loved it immediately,” she said. “I went on to visit more colleges, but Niagara just stuck with me for some reason. It just clicked.”

Being that far from home, however, has provided some benefits for Stone.

“It’s definitely different. I like it a lot,” she said of the college experience. “You’re

The mental side of sports?

Alex Stone has that covered.

The St. Charles North graduate is now a sophomore at Niagara University in upstate New York, and although she’s still officially undecided on her major, she’s leaning toward psychology. Perfect for a volleyball player such as herself.

“Psychology’s always interested me because I love interacting with people and helping people,” she said.

“I think it’s cool to find out what’s going on in their minds and try to help them fix whatever problems they might have. It’s always interested me.”

But the classroom won’t be the only place she’ll get to use that psychology. It can trans-

When asked why, Trestman said Wednesday, “I don’t think this is unusual. We’ve done it both ways, where we’ve elected five captains, which some teams do. Other teams go with weekly captains.

“After being around this team for 18 months, they’re certainly a group of guys that I would call decorated veterans that are influential guys on this team, guys that I go to, talk to.

But there’s also a lot of guys, more than five guys, who are truly leaders and guys who have the respect of our team and leaders are really visibly seen in their demeanor, in the way they practice, the way they work in meetings, the way they initiate conversation with

other players and we have a lot of those guys.

“I felt this year I wanted to recognize some of those guys.

And that’s why we’re doing it.

It’s not unique to us.”

I’m not sure if there is a right or wrong answer, but here’s my problem with it. Captains appointed for one game aren’t really team captains responsible for the well-being and best interest of all their teammates. They’re just guys being honored on a given day.

Let’s say one, two or several Bears players had been out of line in the locker room immediately after the loss to the Dolphins. Which players would be in a position to do something about it in a way every man on

the team would respect? This week’s captains, last week’s captains, Week 1’s captains?

Jared Allen doesn’t think that’s a big deal.

“I’ve never been a huge guy on needing a person to be an out-front, vocal leader,” Allen said. “I would assume people respect the fact that I show up and I work. And I’ve been around this league long enough and had enough success in this league to where if I need to talk to someone I can.

“I think I have that respect as a teammate. I think that’s what we do well with this team.

Again, I would say we have good leadership. Maybe, from the outside looking in, you guys are looking for a vocal person

who has an ‘S’ on his chest to do something. Those aren’t the guys typically I find that people respond to.”

Perhaps Allen and Trestman are both right.

But I have never seen a business being run successfully by a bunch of talented guys with whoever feels like it at the time stepping up and leading and getting everyone else to follow.

Leadership by committee is often no leadership at all.

Could it be one of the reasons the Bears are 3-4 and floundering right now?

It was unfortunate and not something that should be ignored or just passed off, and it’s not something that happens often in locker rooms around the league.

But it’s also really not that big a deal if you believe, as I do, there is no rift or turmoil among Bears players. The locker room isn’t about to erupt and this group of Bears players do seem to be a fairly tight group, exactly as head coach and team members continue to tell us.

Rather than being a sign of more ominous things to come, it was most likely just an overflow of emotions after a tough loss that will have little impact on the future of this Bears team.

What it has done, however, is touch off a different question or topic of conversation about the 2014 Bears.

Who are the leaders of this football team, who should they be and what kind of job are they doing?

Last season, Marc Trestman’s first as the Bears coach, the players elected captains for the season. This year, Trestman decided not to let the players vote and has been appointing captains himself for each game.

Mild exercise, alternative therapies can relieve back pain Dear Doctor K: I have frequent back pain. I usually take acetaminophen (the Tylenol brand), but I hear it may not be effective for back pain. Is there anything to that?

Dear Reader: If you’d asked me that question even a year ago, I would have said, “Acetaminophen works fine for most people.” Lots of people are bothered by back pain. When it strikes, all you want is relief – and fast. Many folks turn to over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin).

Most doctors I know would have shared my impression that acetaminophen works for back pain. I respect the opinions of seasoned doctors, but I also know that there is no substitute for actually studying a question. Indeed, a recent study has challenged my long-standing assumption about the value of acetaminophen for back pain.

Researchers wanted to know if acetaminophen shortened the time from the start of acute back pain (back pain that comes on suddenly) to complete relief.

What they found was surprising.

For people who used acetaminophen only when their back

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff pain bothered them, it took about 17 days to get complete relief. For those who took the medication three times a day, it also took about 17 days for full relief. And for those who took a placebo – a sugar pill with no medicine at all – the time to recovery was 16 days. In other words, the medication made no difference in how fast back pain went away and stayed away. In addition, all three groups had similar experiences in terms of the severity of their pain, disability and function.

Does this mean that you shouldn’t bother to use acetaminophen for back pain? Not necessarily. Randomized studies like this can tell you the reaction of the average person in the study.

But people are all different. It may be that some people really do get good relief from acetaminophen, even if the average person doesn’t. So, if it works for you, stick with it.

But acetaminophen does have its own risks and side effects.

Taking too much acetaminophen can seriously damage the liver.

Ideally, the average healthy adult

shouldn’t take more than 3,000 milligrams a day.

The safest option is to try to get through the worst of your back pain without medication: • Use cold compresses or an ice pack, not heat, immediately after an injury. About 48 hours after back pain hits, heat may be more helpful. The warmth soothes and relaxes aching muscles.

• Try to keep moving. A limited amount of activity is better than lying in bed. Ask your doctor about appropriate exercises to start sooner rather than later.

Exercise therapy can help heal acute back pain and help prevent a repeat episode.

• Chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, massage or yoga provide relief for some people with acute back pain. Several studies support using these alternative/complementary therapies.

Many people can relieve their back pain with these simple measures. If they don’t provide complete relief, then non-prescription NSAID medicines often will do the trick.

Teens should get allowance Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and my parents give me a $10 per week allowance. My problem is that I must save five dollars of it. In fact, they put the five dollars in a bank savings account for me. Don’t you think that I should get my full allowance? – Nameless, Vicksburg, Mississippi Dear Nameless: Some parents might disagree, but I believe that an allowance should be given with only one restriction – purchasing something not approved by the parents.

All teens should be assigned chores, but the allowance should not be tied to these chores.

When family earnings are sufficient, teens should be given an allowance!

Dr. Wallace: I met Vicky at a party and I really liked her. When I asked her for her telephone number she gave it to me. So, I called her last night and her dad answered the phone, and when I asked to speak to her he wanted to know why I was calling.

I told him we met a few days ago at a party and I was going to ask her out. Then he asked me if I knew how old she was and I told him I thought she was about 16. He said Vicky was only 13 and that she wasn’t allowed to date yet. I was really surprised. She didn’t look like she was only 13.

If you are in a bridge slam, take some extra time, because so many points are at stake. In this deal, how should South play in six spades after West leads the club queen?

North’s two-no-trump response showed a balanced hand with eight points or more. South, knowing that his side had at least an eightcard spade fit, used the Gerber convention, asking for aces.

The original declarer took the first trick with dummy’s club king and played a spade to his king – and had to concede down one when West discarded.

If the spades were 2-2 or 3-1, there would not have been a problem. So South should have slammed his attention on dealing with a 4-0 break. If West had all four, the contract was unmakable.

But when East had four, they could be picked up if South could lead through East’s 10-nine twice. But that required two dummy entries: the heart ace and club king.

Declarer had to win the first trick in his hand and lead the spade king. Suppose East won with his ace and returned his second club. South would have won in the dummy and played a spade. Presumably East would have put in his nine or 10, but declarer would have won, returned to dummy with a heart, and finessed East out of his last two trumps.

Some prognosticators forecast that China’s economy may overtake ours as soon as this year, almost a decade sooner than most predicted just a few years ago. What’s just as astonishing is the rapid pace at which China has morphed from a country caught in an aesthetic time warp to one that’s now on the leading front of design.

On my first trip to Beijing, more than 25 years ago, I marveled at a country that seemed uncomfortably positioned with one foot firmly committed to Communist ideology and the other lunging toward a society where private wealth was not only tolerated but encouraged.

Back then, the faded lobby of the Beijing Hotel was considered one of the more stylish hangouts, with its glass cases of Western cigarettes for sale and smoke-choked floor-to-ceiling curtains framing windows onto the city’s most notable avenue.

Bicyclists dominated the roads, and only the homes of the elite sported refrigerators and televisions.

Now China is a formidable economic powerhouse, and those throngs of bicycles have been supplanted with bumperto-bumper Porsches making their way to chic shopping streets and one of the globe’s most interesting contemporary art zones. The Beijing Hotel is still there (revamped, of course) but now competes with every top luxury hotel brand in the world.

And like many who’ve recently come into money, China’s taken a circuitous route to identifying a sense of personal style. Having experimented with an eyebrow raising more-is-more sensibility for the past decade, new Chinese style has confidently settled into a more restrained and elegant influencer of global home design trends.

Of course, it’s of little surprise that the best examples of this new Chinese style reside at the two Chinese Aman outposts: the Aman at Summer Palace in Beijing and at sister property Amanfayun in Hangzhou, which I recently had a chance to visit.

The Aman Resort Group has

long pursued aesthetic perfection at its properties, notably incorporating centuries of local culture into the creation of environments that are both genuine and remarkably fresh.

Recent headlines have bolstered its reputation even further with its Venice outpost, Aman Canal Grande, chosen as the site of the recent nuptials of George Clooney to Amal Alamuddin. Its two Chinese properties (a third is due later this year) showcase this new Chinese aesthetic and, more importantly, provide a clear-cut guide to capturing this chic and trending look in three easy steps: • Search out clean and classic Chinese furniture. Avoid the fussy and embellished Chinese furniture popularly seen in Chinese restaurants and, instead, search out plain pieces with clean, classic lines and simple hardware. Chinese domestic furniture, made for everyday use in the late 19th and early 20th century, features clean lines that easily adapt to nearly every style.
