Boom! Shore Louie’s opens in Elburn Louis Cina brings New York-style pizza to Route 38

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Wearing an apron that reads “captain,” Louis Cina welcomes visitors to a new pizza place in Elburn that is all dressed up to look a little like a ship, with ropes and netting.

Cina, 37, earlier this month opened Shore Louie’s Boom! Pizza, at 151 E. Route 38 in Elburn. The business is on the south side of Route 38 in a strip mall that also includes establishments, such as Briana’s Pancake Cafe and E&S Fish Market. The location previously housed GED Pizza, which closed last year.

Menu items at Shore Louie’s include The Mullet, billed as half-pizza and half-calzone, and The Pizzabol, which is half-pizza and half-stromboli. The menu also includes New York-style pizza, with specialty choices including the Meatball Parm Pizza, the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and a White Pizza. Shore Louie’s also offers fried calamari, sandwiches and salads. All menu items are punctuated with the word “Boom!”

Cina said he is there most of those hours, which he said is a great thing.

“It’s absolutely great,” Cina said. “It doesn’t feel like work. … I can throw myself a pizza party whenever I want.”

Cina moved from New Jersey to Elburn to run the business. He is the brother-in-law of Elburn resident Eric Wilson, who runs Woof Beach locations in Batavia, Geneva and South Elgin. Wilson said he lives near the location and noticed GED seemed to be at least temporarily closed. He saw a sign on the building explaining the space was for

He said he had been trying to convince Cina to move to the area for years. Cina said he has worked as a cook since he was a teenager. Wilson said the location would be perfect for Cina.

“I’ve been eating his family’s food for a long time,” he said, adding he and his wife

have been married nearly 11 years. Wilson said he asked Cina: “ ‘Do you believe you make some of the best pizzas and make some of the best sauce around?’ He said, ‘Yeah, it’s really good.’ … If it’s awesome, people will show up and eat it.”

Cina said the place is called Shore Louie’s because he is from the Jersey Shore.

He wanted to bring New York-style pizza to the area.

He said the “Boom!” came about after Wilson turned on a light-up sign and said it was going to be like “Boom! Pizza.”

Visitors may dine in or carry out their food. Cina hopes to start delivery service soon.

Park district goes to the dogs with classes for canines

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com For anyone who wants to teach a new dog old tricks or help an old dog feel like a new pup, the St. Charles Park District is offering courses that can help canines feel and act their best.

It’s a pretty sweet deal for man’s best friend. The “Group Trick Training for Dogs” course can help Fido slip a few new tricks up his furry sleeve, so to speak.

Dogs who have mastered the art of sitting and staying may be ready to move on to more complex commands, such as rolling over, sitting pretty and the Army crawl.

“Dogs love to receive praise from their owners,” said Lara Piner, recreation supervisor for family programs for the park district.

“Learning how to perform tricks like peek-a-boo or sitting pretty is a great way for dogs to find even more ways to impress their human companions.”

The “Group Trick Training for Dogs” class will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 16 at James O. Breen Community Park. There is a limit of one dog a person, and regular dog park rules and restrictions apply.

And while watching a pet get older is never an easy thing to do, learning how to enhance the quality of a senior pet’s life definitely can add to the quantity of the time pet owners can spend with their companion animal. “Caring for Your Senior Petizen” can offer suggestions on how to provide an optimally healthy lifestyle, recognize the signs and symptoms of age-related conditions, and provide adequate diet and exercise. The course runs from 7 to 8 p.m.

Shelter dog euthanized despite online petition

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Bubbles, a 4-year-old pit bull mix with a history of aggression and biting, was euthanized this week after an animal behaviorist informed Anderson Animal Shelter officials the dog posed a significant risk.

The dog was euthanized despite an online petition on Change.org to save Bubbles.

Former shelter volunteer Debbie Szenda put the petition together and said she believes the dog could have been saved.

Shelter director Beth Drake said the dog posed such a risk that the shelter could not release Bubbles for adoption or to another rescue.

“It was not a matter of training not to be predatory,” Drake said of Bubbles.

“It’s part of who the dog is.

She poses a significant risk regardless of training or who takes her as a rescue … I feel that our community has the right to expect that the animals we release into the community will not be dangerous.”

Szenda, who said she could not stay on as a volunteer because of the Bubbles situation, disputed that.

“I had a foster home open and ready for this dog, a trainer open and ready for this dog. But they didn’t want to give her to me, and I don’t understand why,” Johnson said. “I’ve been around 19

years and … never been denied a dog from animal control – not one time.”

Johnson said in the rescue’s near 20-year history, she is known for taking on “the hard cases.”

Drake said she hired animal behavior specialist John Ciribassi to evaluate Bubbles on Tuesday after the dog bit a staff person in the stomach in an unprovoked attack last week. Bubbles was euthanized later that day, she said.

Drake said the staff person’s head and shoulders were in a cage cleaning it when a volunteer was walking Bubbles back to her kennel at the time the attack occurred.

“It was totally unprovoked,” Drake said. “It was completely out of the blue.”

Bubbles also attacked a puppy Oct. 13, Drake said.

The puppy will recover physically, but it was traumatized, she said.

Another aspect of the Bubbles saga is the dog has a history of biting staff – dating to February – but no bite reports were filed with Kane County Animal Control as required until the Oct. 9 attack, Drake said.

According to documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, the Oct. 9 bite was reported to animal control. Drake said she has addressed the issue of reporting bites with staff.

Drake said 90 percent of aggression in dogs is fearbased. What Bubbles exhibited was predatory aggression, she said.

“The only reasonable option was to euthanize Bubbles,” Drake said. “It was the right thing to do.”

Because of misinformation about Bubbles, Drake said she has had to post a response online on a link to the shelter’s website, www. andersonanimalshelter.org.

Johnson said when she was at the shelter, she asked the staff person to show her the bite, and the employee refused. Johnson said she stands by her own evaluation that Bubbles could have been saved.

“They robbed her of her life,” Johnson said. “I think she could have been wonderful and thrived in a family – if given a chance. But she was never given that chance.”

The nonprofit theater has partnered with the St. Charles Park District to turn Primrose Farm into GRIMrose Farm for the next two weekends.

Donna Steele, the theater’s executive director, said it will be different than Steel Beam’s previous Halloween attractions at the Kane County Fairgrounds in that it will feature multiple attractions – including a hayride and ghostly barn – that may be visited in any

order.

The move came about from a visit to the property last year, she said, noting the new venue gave the theater a chance to create more of a “theme park” that can be explored than a “one-and-done” haunted house.

“I think it’s going to be fun,” she said.

GRIMrose Farm will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as Oct. 30 and 31. Hours are from 7 to 10 p.m. except for Sunday, when it closes at 9 p.m.

Battalion chief: Smoke reports at Waubonsee building unfounded

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – An initial report of a structure fire Wednesday morning at Waubonsee Community College turned out to be unfounded, fire officials said.

The Sugar Grove Fire Department was dispatched for the report at 10:15 a.m.

Wednesday to the main Waubonsee campus off Route 47 in Sugar Grove, Battalion Chief Mike Warner said.

Upon their arrival to the college’s science building, fire crews saw no smoke or fire showing at the structure.

“We never found any fire problem,” Warner said.

A maintenance worker at the school believes someone might have mistaken exhaust from a building vent for smoke from a fire, Warner said.

The science building was not evacuated because the incident was not deemed a hazard, he said.

The Fox Valley Park District’s board of trustees this week announced the selection of Jim Pilmer as the district’s latest executive director, according to a news release.

Pilmer becomes the sixth executive director in the park district’s 68-year history, the release stated. He takes over for Nancy McCaul, who recently retired Jim Pilmer after 30 years in the parks and recreation profession.

Pilmer officially will begin the position Nov. 9, according to the release.

Pilmer is a lifelong Aurora resident, and he brings a varied background to the position with extensive experience in the public and private sectors. He recently worked as director of neighborhood standards for the city of Aurora and also served in an Aurora University administrative role for three years before that, the release stated.

Pilmer was director of parks and recreation for the city of Aurora from 2002 to 2009, overseeing park projects and renovations that included McCarty Park, Solfisburg Park and Phil-

lips Park, featuring such attractions as the Sunken Garden, Mastodon gallery, zoo, “Movies in the Park” and a holiday lights tour.

Pilmer stated interaction and communication with residents are among Pilmer’s top priorities, according to the release.

“I am visible, approachable and accessible – I like to be out there among the people I serve,” Pilmer stated in the release.

“Developing good relationships with our residents fosters a culture of mutual trust and respect for all involved.”

Pilmer plans the same approach in dealing with the diversity of community groups, neighborhoods and the constituents of the Fox Valley Park District.

“Building consensus through collaborative commitment is important to our mission as a park district,” Pilmer stated in the release. “Continuing the excellent leadership and financial stewardship of taxpayer dollars – through innovative and cooperative partnerships with other governmental agencies – helps lessen the burden on residents.”

Pilmer also plans to continue the district’s self-imposed tax freeze. The district for the past four years has maintained a 0 percent tax increase for residents, according to the release.

SUGAR GROVE – Police from Kane County are seeking a 29-year-old Hinckley man who faces numerous charges stemming from an incident that took place Tuesday afternoon in Sugar Grove.

According to a news release issued by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, M a t t h e w Hageman, 29, of the 300 block of Lincoln Highway Matthew in Hinckley, Hageman was stopped by deputies at about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday. The release indicated Hageman was driving a Chevrolet Blazer and was stopped at a gas station at Route 47 and Cross Street in Sugar Grove. Police said he drove away as they were talking to him.

The release stated Hageman started to head south on Route 47 and made his way into a field on the south side of Sugar Grove. Police said the pursuit had ended, but deputies remained in the area and observed Hageman heading west in a field before entering the roadway near Route 30 and Dugan Road.

Police said he struck several cones as he drove through a construction zone.

He drove west on Route 30 before being pulled over, but then fled on foot, the release indicated. He eventually was located in a cornfield near

the intersection of Route 30 and Dauberman Road, where police had set up a perimeter.

Hageman was identified by deputies and taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, police said. The release indicated his injuries were minor, and he was admitted overnight for treatment. Police said they searched the Blazer and found a small amount of heroin. Also, they found he had a suspended driver’s license and issued warrants for a violation of an order of protection, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and two warrants for driving with a suspended license.

The release indicated Hageman left the hospital before deputies responded to take him into custody, and he has not been located. Police said he is known to frequent the Big Rock and Sugar Grove areas.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized charges against him, and warrants have been issued for his arrest. He is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a felony; fleeing and eluding a peace officer, a felony; resisting a police officer, a misdemeanor; driving on a suspended driver’s license, a misdemeanor; leaving the scene of a property damage accident, a misdemeanor; improper lane usage; driving on a sidewalk; speeding; improper passing on the shoulder; disobeying a stop sign; and making an improper turn.

Senior care agency to host grand opening and reception

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – After opening in March, Seniors Helping Seniors of Fox Valley will host a grand opening and ribbon-cutting event at 4 p.m.

Friday at the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, 106 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

A reception will follow from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at The Range Grill and Tap, 35 N. Water St., Batavia, said franchisee Caroline Carlson Olinger of Batavia.

The nonmedical, in-home care service matches senior caregivers with seniors who need nonmedical care, but need assistance to remain living in their own homes, Olinger said.

“We’ll be working out of my home office in Batavia,” Olinger said. “I recruit seniors who want to work with other seniors. And we also look for those in need through ads in church bulletins and word of mouth, since I’m local. In general, I’m looking for those who are post-career, 50plus and want to stay active.”

The for-profit Seniors Helping Seniors is headquartered in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and has more than 250 franchises in 42 states since 1998, she said. Three other Illinois franchises are in Plainfield, Chicago and Westmont.

Services include companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, handyman repairs, pet support, technology support, medication reminding, wellness checks, seasonal home assistance, help with grooming and dressing, transportation

and companionship, she said.

The area served through her Batavia franchise is Kane County and portions of DuPage and McHenry counties, she said.

A 1979 graduate of St. Charles High School, Olinger is the daughter of the late Mary and Floyd Carlson, teachers in St. Charles and Batavia, she said. She served in the Navy for 30 years with awards and decorations, such as the Legion of Merit with Gold Star and Defense Meritorious Service Medal. She was honored in 2013 as a Distinguished Alumni from District 303.

She and her husband, Scott Olinger, retired from the military in June 2013, coming to Batavia to be closer to her family, Olinger said.

“For a time, I was a primary caregiver for my terminally ill parents as they were in the final stages of cancer,” Olinger said. “Scott and I also assist in the care of his parents, and provided support for an aunt who has dementia. Each step of the Seniors Helping Seniors recruitment process reaffirmed my desire to open this franchise in order to make a difference in the quality of life for seniors.”

Also partners in the franchise are her husband and her sister-in-law, Judy Carlson of Batavia. Her other sister-inlaw, Mary Ann Carlson of St. Charles, does training and administrative tasks, she said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – After their success with Geneva Ale House – a restaurant and craft beer establishment in Geneva – owners Brian Harrington and Kristie Elizondo are trying their hands at a new pizza restaurant.

Craft Works Pizza, at 40W134 Campton Crossings Drive, Campton Hills, opened last month, offering all 12-inch pizzas with rustic Neapolitan crust, Harrington said.

“It’s thin, but not super thin,” Harrington said. “Our menu is a little more upscale.

We do not do meatball sandwiches or Italian beef. We have paninis, salads and ap-

petizers.”

Harrington said the location has had other pizza restaurants there, but it had been empty for about a year.

The pizza restaurant is a departure from what Geneva Ale House, at 319 W. State St., is known for, which is burgers and craft beer, he said.

Harrington said he previously had worked in information technology before opening the Geneva location six years ago.

Harrington said a decision was made to do a soft opening before having a grand opening and ribbon cutting.

“We wanted to let things ramp up slowly and get all the kinks worked out,” Harrington said.

POLICE REPORTS Kane County Sheriff • A resident of the 7N300 block of Falcons Trail, St. Charles, reported Thursday, Oct. 15, that his or her mailbox was struck by a pumpkin between Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11. While the mailbox itself wasn’t damaged, its metal post snapped. Replacement costs were estimated at $20. The resident reported the incident after hearing other mailboxes in the area were damaged around the same time.

A canceled class makes for a happy dance BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina As a community college student, I’m used to my standard morning routine. I get out of bed early (though, not as early as I had to get up in high school), scramble to eat breakfast and get dressed, try to wake myself out of a zombie state and then drive to class on a long country road.

When I arrive at my college campus, the best days usually are when I head to my first class only to discover a little surprise when I walk up to the classroom. Each and every time I see a white sign posted outside the classroom, I know what that sign means. My mood then brightens up for one obvious reason: no class. Not having to do any school work, I get more than an hour to myself to do whatever I want.

However, having class canceled also can be quite frustrating. From my experience thus far, I often will drive all the way to school, only to find out that my first class is canceled.

Why is this annoying? Well, for one thing I often get up early, thinking that my class will start on time, only to figure out that class is canceled and I could have slept in. I believe my first class will begin at 9:30 a.m., only to realize that my school day will not begin until 11.

Most teachers will email the class early in the morning the day that class is canceled, stating the class will not meet for the day. Although, if you’re like me and often do not check your school email before driving to school, then you’ll miss this important email that your professor sent.

weird how class was never canceled in high school if the teacher was not there that day. There was simply a substitute who the students often messed around with to replace the teacher for the school day.

With high school substitutes, class for the day consisted of doing mindless worksheets or watching an educational video.

It was boring – but easy – work.

Now, in college, it’s nothing like this. If the professor isn’t able to teach the class for the day, then nobody is. I guess there truly is no one better than the professor themselves in college.

Evidently, I’m still getting used to this whole idea of class getting canceled so willingly.

The first time I had a class canceled I sort of didn’t know what to do. Nonetheless, I’m still waiting for the first time that my last class of the day will be canceled so I can leave Waubonsee Community College early and just go straight home.

As of now, I’ve always had my first class get canceled, leaving me to find some random couch to sit on, talk to my friends and “study” for upcoming tests.

Although, it might be incorrect to hope one of my classes gets canceled soon. I did pay a good amount of money to take my courses, so I’d like to attend as many classes as I can.

Horrific as it is for the victims, drug addiction’s impact reverberates beyond them, to include families, friends, whole communities.

More treatment is necessary, as is prevention; yet preventing opioid addiction has been devilishly difficult due to the fact that people’s first contact with the drugs often comes not through illicit channels but in a doctor’s office, where they are prescribed opioids by a licensed physician who, in turn, had been told that medications such as OxyContin or Vicodin convey powerful relief with little or no addiction risk.

In 2012, providers wrote 259 million prescriptions for opioids, enough for every American adult to have a bottle of pills. Opioid sales increased 300 percent since 1999. Almost two million

people abused these drugs in 2013, and more than 16,000 died from overdoses.

Now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the source of this data) has a plan that could make a major dent in the overprescription of opioids. The CDC is preparing opioid-prescribing guidelines for primary-care physicians – the first of their kind from a federal agency.

The guidelines are not finished, but early indications are that they will urge physicians to discuss risks with patients, pursue non-opioid alternatives as “preferred” options and limit initial prescriptions to a three-day supply at “the lowest effective dose.” If finalized by the CDC and embraced by doctors, the guidelines promise to turn medical practice in an appropriately more cautious direction.

As is often the case

with suggestions to curb pain prescriptions, the CDC’s proposals are being met with opposition: some from people concerned about the impact on patients, some from a pharmaceutical industry concerned about the impact on profits.

The American Cancer Society’s lobbying arm has urged the CDC to suspend work on its guidelines, arguing in an Oct. 1 letter to the agency that cancer patients could be denied pain relief. Though understandable, these concerns are overstated; the CDC has said publicly its focus is not oncology but primary care, “outside end-of-life care.”

After incorporating valid comments from the cancer society and other interested parties, the CDC plans to publish in early 2016, and we see no reason to delay.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

A VIETNAM VET’S MEMOIR North Aurora author pens ‘Diary of a Draftee’

NORTH AURORA – James Yunker grew up during a much different time.

A draft dictated that he serve in the United States military during the Vietnam War. Just weeks after marrying his wife, Susan, Yunker – now 70 years old – was drafted into the U.S. Army on Nov. 16, 1965. His two years of service included numerous experiences with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment – experiences that continue to run through his head to this very day.

Three years ago, Yunker decided that he was going to write a memoir with recollections from his days spent in Vietnam. On May 13, Yunker, along with Tate Publishing and Enterprises, put together “Diary of a Draftee.” The 304-page book is available on several websites, including those for Amazon and Barnes and Noble. In addition, the book is available for Kindle and at tatepublishing.com.

Yunker has had one book signing since the release of his book, and although he currently does not have another scheduled, his hopes are to have a few more in the near future.

The North Aurora native caught up with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey to talk about his reasoning for writing the memoir, as well as what it meant to him. Yunker also briefly spoke about his experiences in the Vietnam War.

Chris Casey: What made you decide to pursue writing this memoir? Why write this book?

James Yunker: It all started just sitting in my basement, in my wood shop, writing down notes. I sat down there for close to two years. Not all at once, of course. It took a long time and had a lot of things to jog my memory. Putting together the details took a couple years, just piecing it all together. But I wanted to tell the story because my story is pretty typical from the guys that were

Yunker: Oh yeah ... oh yeah. The first time I was out – I may not have even been there for a month – we were out by this section of road that was dug up in a way that you couldn’t get vehicles through. Our regimental commander had to go out and see the road. A sergeant would take a guy out of each track, and they came by and got me. We headed out down the road, and I was the lead guy. We got out just past where they dug the road up. There were seven of us (three officers and four grunts), and we got hit with personnel mines. I was lucky and was the only one not wounded. I had three holes in my vest. Three of the guys were killed the first time I was out, and I remember just thinking, “I have 11 more months of this.”

Casey: Do you have any advice for young men joining the special forces today?

Bulldogs take friendly rivalry

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland boys cross country coach Chad Clarey handed Batavia counterpart Bronco Meeks a bone early Wednesday evening.

Forget the idiom. To have thrown it would have been poor sportsmanship. It also might have desecrated the four-year-old symbol of the schools’ friendly-yet-deepseated running rivalry, the Silver Bone trophy.

“Just a dog bone that’s spray painted silver and has a little plaque underneath it,” Batavia junior Jacob Fehrenbacher said.

The 21st-century hardware encapsulates both schools’ al-

literative nicknames – Kaneland’s Knights and Batavia’s Bulldogs – while uniting the athletes and coaches with ties to both school districts.

Clarey is one, to be sure.

The 1989 Kaneland graduate and event co-organizer teaches at Grace McWayne School in Batavia.

Rotolo Middle School boys cross country coach Mark Montgomery, who guided the program to an IESA Class 3A state title this past weekend, also is a former Knights runner.

“Just all kinds of ties that cross over,” Clarey said.

“Yeah, it’s pretty neat.”

Fehrenbacher literally identifies with the grandfather of all connections in this bond between former confer-

ence rivals. His grandpa is the late Larry Eddington, Kaneland’s longtime former coach who died in December 1994 and is the namesake of the Knights’ annual Invite. Clarey is Eddington’s coaching successor.

Eddington’s wife, Elenore, taught in Batavia’s elementary school system. His daughter, Amy, ran cross country for the Knights.

“Everyone in my family ran,” Fehrenbacher said. “My mom ran here. He coached the team here. It just connects us better.”

Fehrenbacher was part of Batavia’s sweep of the top five individual slots in the junior varsity race, a feat that earned the JV Bulldogs a season-ending helping of ice

cream, per an earlier agreement with coaches. Because the Kaneland and Batavia varsity teams are preparing for respective IHSA Class 2A and 3A regionals on Saturday, the freshmen-sophomore and JV teams competed in separate races Wednesday.

Scores were combined to determine a winner and Silver Bone custodian, which in this case was the Bulldogs, who earned a 41-81 victory.

Batavia has boasted bragging rights in each running, dating to the final seasons of program coaching icon Mike DiDomenico, who yielded the reins to Meeks, Rotolo’s former boys coach, after the fall of 2013.

The IHSA will host its annual football pairings show beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday on CSN Chicago, with the broadcast to be streamed online on IHSA.TV and CSNChicago.com.

Pairings for Class 1A will be unveiled at 8:10 p.m., with each subsequent class to be announced every 10 minutes.

The Class 8A draw, then, will be unveiled at 9:20.

The state’s 256 playoff qualifiers will be published on IHSA.org at approximately 5:15 p.m. Saturday, and will be sorted by wins and playoff points – or opponent’s victories.

Among KCC-area schools, Batavia (7-1), Geneva (7-1) and St. Charles North (6-2) each have clinched playoff spots.

Kaneland (5-3) already is playoff eligible, but can clinch a spot with a Week 9 victory at Rochelle.

St. Francis (4-4) must defeat visiting Fenwick to become playoff eligible.

St. Charles East (3-5), Marmion (3-5) and Burlington Central (0-8) have been eliminated from postseason contention.

NIU’s Bouagnon shining in backfield

DeKALB – Northern Illinois running back Joel Bouagnon can’t stop scoring touchdowns.

The junior Aurora Christian graduate who transferred from Burlington Central and has ties to Batavia has flourished in the starting role for the Huskies.

He is third in the nation and first in the Mid-American Conference in rushing scores – a strong combination of goal line touchdowns and big plays.

“That’s a complete package,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said. “I think that Joel has a good knack for getting the tough yards and his vision – when the big one’s there, he can take it.”

The Huskies’ leading rusher enters Saturday’s game against Eastern Michigan with 144 rushes for 725 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Those numbers in seven games in 2015 already exceed those Bouagnon put up in 14 games in 2014, in which he had 113 carries for 655 yards and five touchdowns as a backup.

AURORA – On Oct. 11, Marmion hosted its first Cadet Camp in partnership with Special Olympics.

This football camp featured a series of drills and competitions developed by senior Matthew Talarico of Geneva, a member of Marmion’s varsity football team, and head football coach Dan Thorpe.

Over 10 Special Olympic athletes were in attendance, with the majority coming from Northern Illinois Academy, a special needs residential school located in Aurora.

Members of the Marmion football team assisted with the camp, running each drill and interacting with the athletes.

The Cadet Camp concluded with a scrimmage and

Talarico selflessly and creatively organized and coordinated every aspect of the event.

He is planning on conducting similar camps throughout the year for different sports, growing each event to have more athletes involved.

Talarico’s goal is to create a solid foundation so the Cadet Camps will be a lasting part of Marmion.

“Thanks to Matthew’s vision, enthusiasm and dedication, Cadet Camp will be an avenue in which both Special Olympic athletes and Marmion students will be able to grow, interact and learn from each other for years to come.” Marmion director of campus ministry Mark Malkowski said in a statement.

Continued from page 28 “They come here, it’s a low-pressure situation. It’s a nice course. It’s been nice weather the last couple years,” Meeks said. “They can pop some good times out here. It’s worked out pretty well.”

Varsity runners cheered their teammates, maintaining the camaraderie indigenous to “cross,” as it’s colloquially known.

Kaneland sophomore Henry Nosek, who comfortably won the freshman-sophomore race in 17:12, quickly shuffled from the finish line to the home stretch of the on-campus course, offering one final verbal push to his fellow Knights.

“Cross country is just a great sport,” Nosek said. “The fact you can try your hardest to work your way up there.

Then you have the team and stuff that’s very encouraging.”

Nosek’s mother, Sarah, was one of dozens of non-athletes on hand who agreed. Well, perhaps its best to call Sarah Nosek a non-competitor; she ran cross country at Wheaton North, and her career is part of what helped spur Henry No-

sek and three younger siblings to try running, too.

About four years ago, Sarah Nosek felt the proverbial runner’s “bug,” the urge to get back into the sport and challenged herself. She obliged, and can’t imagine life without doing otherwise.

“It’s amazing the power that you feel, especially as you’re getting older. Like, ‘My body can do this.’ There’s such a strength in that,” Sarah Nosek said.

A handful of Wednesday’s runners will get the opportunity to compete at varsity regionals, bidding to join the coveted top seven and contribute to the team score.

Competition season may be ending for the rest, but the next few weeks still afford lower-level runners the chance to run alongside the varsity, to offer one more piece of encouragement.

Batavia and Kaneland athletes alike bantered about the course and pleasant conditions after Wednesday’s races.

As afternoon turned into evening, the Bulldogs received a glitzy dog bone, but runners from both sides left for home feeling satisfied.

Stuenkel has firm grasp in Iowa midfield ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber Both on the field and off the field, the adjustment to college was a tricky one for Karly Stuenkel.

The St. Charles North alumna is now a sophomore at the University of Iowa, a midfielder for the Hawkeyes women’s soccer team. And while things are going much better in her second year, she can look back and admit that things were not easy in Year No. 1, either as a player or a student.

“It was hard to get a spot (in the lineup) and get into the groove of soccer. And also balancing school and practice every day, I wasn’t really used to that, and so it was just kind of hard to get a hold on things in general,” Stuenkel said.

Stuenkel didn’t play for the North Stars as a high schooler, instead playing club soccer with Eclipse Select Soccer Club. Because of that, she came to Iowa without any experience playing with or against players who weren’t exactly her age.

It made for a challenging adjustment.

“In club, we’re all the same age and we’re all kind of doing the same things, and practice is not as frequent,” Stuenkel said. “But when you come to college, practice is every day, and you’re playing with girls that are 21, 22. I came in as a freshman at 17 years old, so I wasn’t doing the same things as them, and I didn’t know them as well. I never played high school soccer, so it’s kind of hard playing with people that weren’t my age.”

Stuenkel didn’t think her club experience put her at a disadvantage, necessarily, she just was facing something brand new.

“I think my club prepared me really well,” she said.

“Eclipse is probably one of the best clubs in the nation.

We had intense practices, I knew what was coming for college. But the one thing I didn’t know was playing with different ages, girls that are obviously not my size.”

Iowa women’s soccer midfielder Karly Stuenkel (19), a sophomore from St. Charles North, has enjoyed an increased role with the Hawkeyes after logging just 194 minutes over 12 games last season.

The transition was tough academically, too, as Stuenkel – like all college freshmen – had to get used to the academic freedom she suddenly had.

“You’re really on your own, so it’s your choice if you’re going to class that day or you’re going to your tutor.

Obviously, with being an athlete, it’s a lot more strict,” Stuenkel said. “You don’t have as much freedom with that. But you have to make time for when you’re going to study, when you’re going to do your homework. So it’s just this huge responsibility kind of thrown on you.

And I just don’t think I was 100-percent ready for all that responsibility.”

But that was last year.

This season, Stuenkel – who’s no longer battling the injury issues she had at the beginning of last season – doesn’t just have a spot in the lineup, she’s an integral part of the team. She’s started all but one of the team’s games, appearing in all 16, and she ranks second on the team in points with eight thanks to three goals and a pair of assists.

She also said that she has the athletics/academic bal-

ance figured out and things are generally a lot easier the second time around.

“I think this season I know what it takes to stay healthy and what I need to block out to play well. And I balance school with that, too, so overall I was able to figure things out and do well at soccer and school,” she said.

The key, she said, was kind of hitting the reset button in the offseason and refocusing mentally.

“I feel like I’ve always been decently fit and motivated to play soccer, but freshman year, coming in, I didn’t have

as much motivation by the end of the season,” Stuenkel said. “So in the offseason I worked on that, working on my self-motivation and determination to want to do well in the Big Ten and want to play and why I love soccer.

“It was all mental. Physically, I was always ready to play, but mentally, I was getting myself ready to play.”

34 Nit comb, medicinal shampoo quite effective in treating lice Dear Dr. K: A child in my daughter’s classroom has head lice. What do I need to do if my daughter gets it?

Dear Reader: Lice – the visitor dreaded by parents everywhere.

Head lice are small insects that infest hair on people’s heads. A single insect is called a “louse.” The female lays up to 100 eggs, or nits, at a time. She secretes a kind of glue that attaches the nits onto strands of hair near the scalp.

Once the eggs hatch, their six legs allow them to grasp and wander between hairs. In their remaining days or weeks of life, they feed on human blood. They’re sort of like vampires, only much smaller. (I’ve put an illustration of a louse on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

You’ll know to check your daughter for lice if she is scratching her head often. If you think your daughter has them, you may want to check in with her pediatrician.

Lice and their eggs are often hard to see or distinguish from dandruff or other material caught in the hair.

With proper treatment, head lice usually go away within about two weeks. One option is to use a special louse comb or nit comb to remove lice and their eggs from your daughter’s hair.

This sometimes requires combing several times a week until no lice are seen for two or more weeks. It is possible through careful combing to remove all of the lice, without using medicines to kill them.

Your pediatrician may prescribe a medicine called a pediculicide.

They are special insecticide products that are available over the counter and by prescription in drugstores.

Most pediculicides contain chemicals called pyrethroids as the active ingredient. These usually are applied as a shampoo, then washed off about 10 minutes later. A second treatment is often necessary about 10 days later. When you wash off the pediculicides from your daughter’s hair, do it over the sink, not in a shower or tub. That’s because you want to minimize splashing the pediculicide on skin outside the head.

It’s easier to control where the rinse water goes in the sink.

Head lice are acquired by direct contact with an infested person’s hair.

It’s unusual for head lice to be transferred by shared combs, brushes, hats or other hair accessories.

Head lice are also not usually found on clothes, towels and bed linens.

Still, you may want to change any items that were recently in direct contact with your daughter’s hair and wash them in hot water.

Head lice do not transmit infections. In other words, they are not like the ticks or mosquitos which carry bacteria or viruses that can infect humans.

Finally, despite what many people believe, head lice are neither caused by, nor are a sign of, poor hygiene or housekeeping. They’re just something a person (usually a child) can pick up – and something you can cure.

Don’t return to abusive husband until he has received some professional help Dr. Wallace: My husband and I were high school sweethearts and we were married the year after we graduated.

He was a real nice kid in high school, and I thought he was the nicest guy on this Earth when we were dating. I dreamed about marrying him even when we were still in high school.

I think I fell in love with him because he was so sweet, and he was a perfect husband for the first six months of our marriage. We both found good jobs, saved our money and had planned our future together.

Then one day when he was watching a Chicago Bears game on TV, he wanted to eat in the living room instead of the dining room.

I had the table set already and I preferred to eat at the table rather than risk spilling food on our new couch. So I said, “Let’s just eat here instead.” I was taken aback when he yelled at me and told me to shut up, that he could eat anywhere he wanted to because it was his house.

So he ate in the living room and I ate at the table.

When I finished I went to sit by him on the couch, but he told me to get lost. This made me feel bad, so I told him to get lost and that the house

I started crying, and he then kicked a chair and stormed out of the house and slammed the door really hard. Then he drove away in our car.

I didn’t know what to do, so I called my parents and they came right over and took me home to their house.

My mother had to calm my father down because he was so angry that he threatened to go after Karl. I’ve been at my parents’ house for a couple of days now. I went to work, but I haven’t been home.

When Karl finally called yesterday he apologized and told me that he loves me and

won’t ever hurt me again.

I believe him and I think I should give him another chance and return home.

My parents do not see things this way. They think I should call the police and have him arrested and then start divorce proceedings. T hey believe that he is an abuser who will continue to abuse me and then apologize after each abuse. I’ve heard about things like this, but now I’m really confused and don’t know what to do. I’d like to hear your advice in this situation, but it doesn’t mean that I will take it. –

seems to have an emotional problem that is out of control at this time. Do not return home until he admits he has a problem, and agrees to seek professional help.

Rarely can someone with this type of emotional disturbance overcome it alone. And generally for those who won’t admit they have a problem, the recovery rate is zero.

If he refuses to get help, take your parents’ advice and end the marriage. If you don’t, you could spend your life being a battered wife.

Two uppercut rules to keep in mind

Yesterday, we looked at the bridge uppercut, but there are two important aspects that must be kept in mind by the defenders – both relevant in this deal.

South is in four hearts. How should the defenders card to defeat the contract? Be precise.

As in yesterday’s column, fourth hand made a natural overcall in opener’s minor. North was right to bid two hearts with four-card support, despite his minimum.

West starts with the diamond ace: eight, 10, seven. West cashes the diamond queen: nine, three, six. What now?

This deal was played in a three-table social duplicate. The first West continued with his diamond king. East, thinking that this would win the trick, discarded a low spade. South ruffed, drew trumps, conceded a spade trick, and claimed.

At the second table, West carefully led a low diamond at trick three, which his partner ruffed with the heart jack.

Momentarily, this looked like a lethal uppercut, gaining a trump trick for the defenders. However, South calmly discarded his spade loser and made his contract.

The third West knew that when you try for an uppercut, you should cash all of your side-suit tricks first. Before the third diamond, West took his spade ace. Then he also carefully led a low diamond to force his partner to ruff, and the contract went down one.

South lost two diamonds, one spade and one heart.

Dear Abby: My daughter has been in a lesbian relationship for 14 years.

They recently took me to lunch and informed me her partner, “Nicole,” is in the process of transitioning to a male.

Nicole has now legally changed her name to “Nick” and has begun hormone treatments. They have been going to counseling for the past six months. Since Nick began the transition, I have seen him three times. Last week when I was visiting, I accidentally called Nick by the wrong pronoun, “she” instead of “he,” a couple of times. I was either immediately corrected or ignored until I realized I had used the wrong word. It hurt my feelings.

After I got home, I sent Nick a text to apologize and explain it would take time for me to get used to saying “Nick” and referring to him as a he. I told them their correcting me bothered me.

All weekend I could tell they were irritated with me, and I felt it was uncalled for.

What do you say? Am I wrong to feel hurt they haven’t given me a chance to get used to the new name? –
