Elburn fire district opens station in Lily Lake

Having a station in Lily Lake means quicker response times to the area around it, Callaghan said.

The station responded to its first call within an hour of opening, the chief said, and since has handled a “mix of

everything” – EMS calls, accidents and fire alarms.

“It’s working very well,” Callaghan said. “They’ve been pretty busy up there.”

Callaghan said the district plans to rent the space until it can secure a permanent piece of property.

The fire district is planning an open house for the Lily Lake station, but a date hasn’t been set, Callaghan said. He said it should happen by the end of the year.

Deadline for industrial park plans has passed Missner Group fails to submit plans for development

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – If The Missner Group wants to build a proposed industrial park on the city’s east side, it will have to resubmit plans.

Community Development Director Scott Buening told aldermen at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting that The Missner Group’s application is closed because the firm had missed Monday’s deadline to submit plans to the city for its proposed industrial park.

“If they wish to reapply, they certainly have the right

to do so,” Buening told aldermen.

Skokie-based The Missner Group had proposed to build two large industrial buildings on the east side of Kirk Road at Wind Energy Pass. The group Keep Batavia Neighborhoods was happy Missner is not moving forward with its plans.

“We are pleased that City Hall has recognized that their initial evaluation of the disadvantages of a 55acre industrial park did not include the effect it would have on the 2,300 homeowners on Batavia’s east side,” Keep Batavia Neighbor-

hoods spokeswoman Joyce Keane previously said in a statement.

Keep Batavia Neighborhoods member Dennis Merritt has made an offer to buy the land where the industrial park was proposed.

Merritt has been in the real estate business for 30 years.

His proposal calls for 242 town houses to be built on the land, which is what originally was proposed.

“I am interested in moving forward when the time is right,” Merritt said last week. “I definitely have an interest in trying to do something there.”

Aldermen asking for extension of downtown TIF district

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City aldermen are asking the state legislature for an extension of its downtown tax increment financing District 3.

Aldermen on Monday unanimously approved a resolution asking for the legislature to approve the extension. Batavia TIF District 3 was created in 2004 and comprises much of the downtown area south of Wilson Street, along with certain parcels to the north.

“In order to accommodate future redevelopment in this TIF district, we feel it would be an opportune time to extend this district, as well,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening told aldermen.

Once a municipality creates a TIF, its property assessment is frozen and new or increased taxes generated by improvements are used to pay for improvements or other development incentives.

The city wants to extend the life of the TIF district by

In order for the state legislature to consider an extension request, it requires letters of support from all taxing bodies within the TIF. The city has been securing those letters, Buening said.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The stem fell off the 30-pound pumpkin as soon as Kuipers Family Farm owner Wade Kuipers pulled on it.

“It’s rotted,” he said, as he examined the pumpkin. “Mice had a few nibbles on it.”

Another pumpkin was green instead of the bright orange color one would expect for this time of year.

“It got pollinated late,” Kuipers said. “It didn’t have enough of a growing season.”

With Halloween just around the corner, this is a busy time for Kuipers and his staff, who are working to keep up with the demands of people seeking pumpkins to carve, or perhaps bake into a pie.

Unfortunately, he said, this year’s crop won’t be as good as last year’s.

He blamed rainy weather for the problems with this year’s crop.

“Thirty to 40 percent of the crop is not good because of all the rain we had in the spring and summer,” Kuipers said. “Pumpkins like it when it is dry. The moisture is what brings out diseases.”

Last year was a different story. Kuipers Family Farm enjoyed a bumper pumpkin crop. Kuipers said he didn’t even harvest seven acres last year because it was such a good crop. Now, Kuipers also has to worry about frost damaging the pumpkins.

“It froze the other night, and they got nipped a little bit,” he said. “I think they

are done growing. We always want to keep them fresh, so we keep them on the vine as long as possible. A pumpkin will last a month in the right conditions.”

Kuipers’ father owned Kuipers Produce on Fabyan Parkway near Geneva, where Windy Acres Farm is now located.

The job entails some early morning hours. He said he usually gets up at 5 a.m., and he is out of his house by 6:30 a.m.

The job also involves some tender loving care. Kuipers checks on his pumpkin crop three times a week. He also is in charge of the apple orchard and Christmas tree farm at Kuipers Family Farm.

For those looking for a pumpkin that stands out a bit,

Kuipers also sells blue and even pink pumpkins along with the traditional orange pumpkin. A portion of the sales of the pink pumpkins will go to breast cancer research, Kuipers said.

“We like to create a venue where they can get stuff they have never seen before,” he said.

Kuipers and his employees continue to harvest this year’s pumpkin crop, but he is already planning for next year’s crop.

“I am making notes on this year’s crop, what I liked and what did well,” Kuipers said.

He has some words of advice for those who plan to carve a pumpkin for Halloween – “Don’t carve it until a week before Halloween to make it last longer.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – An apparent roadway dispute in St. Charles Township escalated into a road rage incident in which one driver threatened the other with a knife, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Deputies responded to the 38W200 block of Henricksen Road just after 9 p.m. Oct. 12 for a report of a hit-and-run involving a stabbing threat.

The victim, a man in a Ford, was parked and blocking the road near the dead end of Mal-

lard Lake Road, when he saw another vehicle come up behind him, police reported.

He reportedly pulled forward so the approaching vehicle, a Nissan, could get around him, but the Nissan tried blocking him in. The Nissan’s driver exited his vehicle, and the other driver started to drive off the road to get away, police reported.

The driver of the Nissan, however, got back into his vehicle, backed into the Ford and followed it to a residence in the 38W200 block of Henricksen Road, police reported.

A confrontation between the drivers reportedly ensued in

the driveway. Holding a large, black knife, the driver of the Nissan threatened to stab the other man in the throat, police reported.

Backing away, the unarmed man told the other man to leave the property, police reported. Instead, the armed man returned to the Nissan and drove toward him before backing out of the driveway and leaving, police reported.

Luckily, Undersheriff Pat Gengler said, nobody was hurt.

He said on Tuesday the sheriff’s office is working to obtain an arrest warrant in the case.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Despite attempts to call 911, a St. Charles Township man last week suffered injuries from a beating that left him bleeding in his driveway, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Upon arrival Friday afternoon, police found the man standing in his driveway, bleeding from his head and pointing to where the beating happened – a spot where “a large amount of his blood had pooled,” police reported.

The man, who lives in the 6N100 block of Route 25, told police he was in his garage when he heard a vehicle pull into his driveway. Two people were in a white Ford Ranger, and the man reportedly ordered them to leave his property, at which time the passenger immediately became belligerent.

The man, however, stood his ground and repeated the order, police reported.

After a brief but heated exchange between him and the passenger, the passenger exited the truck, walked up to the man and said, “Touch me, come on and just touch me,” according to the report.

The passenger punched the man’s head, causing him to fall down, after the man began dialing 911, police reported. The man then suffered kicks to his head, and efforts to shield himself resulted in a broken finger, police reported.

“He continued trying to call 911 during the beating, which resulted in his cellphone being covered in blood,” accord-

ing to the report.

The kicking reportedly continued for several minutes before the men fled.

The man – whose injuries included bleeding from the ear, swollen and cut lips and damage to his teeth – refused hospitalization, police reported.

Undersheriff Pat Gengler said Tuesday the sheriff’s office is working to obtain an arrest warrant in this case.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – While an old Scottish prayer addresses being delivered from “ghouls and ghosts ... and things that go bump in the night,” the Sugar Grove Public Library will welcome such excitement at 6:30 p.m. today at a Ghost Hunting 101 program at the library, 125 S. Municipal Drive.

The program features Cindi Muntz, founder of Researchers Investigating the Paranormal – RIP Midwest of Naperville. It is free and open to those ages 13 and older. No library card is needed, but officials ask those intending to come should register online at www.sugargrove.lib.il.us.

“I’m not telling ghost stories,” Muntz said. “It will be a presentation on various types of spirits, all based on research that the team has [done] since 2006.”

Muntz said her group has

done research on paranormal cases throughout the country.

“Not fictional, but legitimate situations,” Muntz said. “We have photographs and video and audio recordings from cases we have been on.”

Adult services librarian Nancy Wollwert said about 33 people have signed up so far.

“The library has not been doing a lot of adult programing in the last few years, so I find the fact that we are signing up people like this is wonderful,” Wollwert said.

“We’d like to do more adult programming.”

Wollwert credited adult services library assistant Judy Flaherty with setting up the program.

“We all wonder what interesting stories [Muntz] has to tell and the evidence she’s collected,” Wollwert said.

“And [Halloween] is mine and Judy’s favorite holiday.”

Chief Greg Benson said taking out debt allowed the district to provide services sooner.

The debt is payable over 10 to 18 years, according to the district.

McCanna said if the district needed a building and equipment to provide services in-house, the only way to do that would be to go into debt.

“I don’t think that’s good or bad,” McCanna said.

He described debt as a tool that allows individuals and governments to get something today rather than to save up for tomorrow.

And, McCanna said, the amount of debt – $1 million, $2 million, $5 million or $10 million – isn’t significant either.

“It’s more of the services they provide,” McCanna said.

“Is a voter going from good fire protection to better fire protection, and is the cost commensurate?”

Elburn’s tax rate is about 0.79 and Fox River’s is about 0.27.

If Fox River wanted to borrow less, Benson said, the district likely would have a higher tax rate to build savings.

Callaghan said Elburn budgets money for the needs in its future plans.

“We’re earmarking money,” he said.

In less than two weeks, select voters in the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District must choose to remain with a fire agency with no debt or to join the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District, which has nearly $4.5 million in debt.

While debt might concern some voters, Kevin McCanna of the public finance consulting firm Speer Financial Inc. said there are other factors to consider, such as quality of service, response times, distance from the fire station and cost.

“It all comes down to, ‘Is it worth changing?’ ” he said.

“The fact of there being debt shouldn’t be significant.”

The chiefs for the districts said their agencies operate with different philosophies toward debt.

“Our belief is you pay as you go,” Elburn Chief Kelly Callaghan said. “We look at our future plans, and we budget for them.”

With that approach, he said, the district isn’t burdening taxpayers with meeting debt obligations during times of economic hardship, such as the recent recession.

“You don’t know what the future will bring, so you’re not imposing a possible problem onto the taxpayers in the future,” Callaghan said.

Fox River – which had contracted services from the city of St. Charles until May 2011 – accumulated its debt by investing in such capital as fire stations and equipment.

He was born March 8, 1932, in Geneva, the son of Hugo and Hildur (Johnson) Granquist.

Ronald was an Army combat veteran who proudly served our country with the 224th infantry division in Korea. After the war, he graduated from the University of Illinois and worked as a civil engineer for the FAA. Ronald enjoyed fishing and was a member of the NRA. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office • A resident of the 43W900 block of Old Midlothian Turnpike, Elburn, reported Tuesday, Oct. 14, that in July she entered into an $18,000 contract with a roofing company to replace or repair her roof. The roof reportedly leaked after the work was done, and she realized another company’s name was on the building permit. The permit also indicated the work was for $8,000.

The Elburn Economic Development Committee selected a logo created by Scott Wheatley, owner and creative director of STRATA G DESIGN. He was one of two local submissions in the contest, said Erin Willrett, Elburn village administrator.

The committee recognized Wheatley at its Oct. 10 meeting and gave him a gift basket, filled with items from nine Elburn businesses and groups, worth at least $180, said CeCe Rocha, an Elburn Chamber of Commerce member.

Wheatley’s circular logo consists of the words “Shop Elburn First” completely surrounded by landmarks and storefronts, which he said are meant to loosely represent some of the iconic businesses in town.

“The committee unanimously approved Scott’s design because of the message it sends to the community,” the committee wrote in a news release. “The logo is bold, vibrant, and represented the

heart of the community.”

The logo will adorn tote bags, decals and other materials later this year as part of the campaign, which encourages residents to shop within the village for products and services. The goal is to have the materials ready in time for the Nov. 29 Christmas Stroll in Elburn, Willrett said.

Wheatley said he was excited and honored to have his work chosen for the contest.

He said he applies his experience working for some of the top advertising agencies in Chicago and the suburbs to his design firm, which he started in 2005.

Wheatley spent a few days coming up with some logo sketches and then refined his idea. Even if the logo runs small, the center with the “Shop Elburn First” wording still is bold, Wheatley said.

“What I was trying to do was create something that invoked that excitement and energy within the village of Elburn,” he said.

Wheatley said he was glad to contribute his talents to a local cause and often shops in Elburn. He previously has done pro bono work for First Baptist Church of Geneva, where he attends services.

Out-of-order contributions THE WASHINGTON POST America’s unusual practice of electing judges has long undermined the integrity of the justice system. But the problem is getting worse: In the Citizens United age, the courtroom is becoming the next frontier in rancorous political division.

The last election cycle saw a record $24 million spent on judicial elections by outside groups, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School. This cycle still is under way, but the signals are discouraging. Just one outside spending group, the Republican State Leadership Committee, is devoting $5 million in its “Judicial Fairness Initiative” to promoting candidates “supportive of restraining government” and to attacking candidates who don’t fit the description, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The group financed a trumped-up assault on the Tennessee Supreme Court over the summer, misleadingly accusing justices of failing to stand up to Obamacare. The attack failed, thankfully, but not without doing harm; the judges had to solicit $1 million in donations to fend it off. Now the committee is attempting to steer judicial elections in Missouri and Montana and potentially in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Texas.

Defenders of spending by conservative groups argue that it counters the donations of unions and trial lawyers, from which money has long flowed to judicial candidates. True, activists of many stripes have donated, and the results often have been nasty. Sitting judges have been attacked for helping to deny cancer treatments or assisting in the release of terrorists. They are regularly accused of being soft on crime. These attacks, or the threat of them, might have chilling real-world effects: There is statistical evidence to suggest that judges hand out longer sentences as Election Day approaches.

Candidate spending on TV ads in North Carolina’s judicial elections has passed $1 million, and would-be judges now have to raise money themselves after the legislature revoked public financing of judicial campaigns. This term the Supreme Court will hear a challenge to Florida’s restrictions on judicial candidates soliciting donations. Keeping the limits would help preserve trust in the judiciary; overturning them would invite the appearance and reality of impropriety in judging.

Even if the court upholds the limitations on solicitation, outside spending seems destined to keep growing. Regulating judicial elections is better than doing nothing, but it is not the best approach. Eliminating them is. A judge’s job is not to serve a constituency, a particular donor or an ideology, as the Republican State Leadership Committee would have it. It is to make a goodfaith effort to apply the law.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CAN’T GIVE BOARD BLANK CHECK To the Editor: The Batavia School District 101 Board is presenting a $15 million bond issue for capital improvements on the November ballot.

The board claims there will be no property tax increase because the bonds would be repaid from the about $1.5 million that normally would be used for capital and maintenance within the school district.

When the Aurora Premium Outlets TIF expired in 2013, the school district received more than $2 million in tax revenue. To expedite the continued development of the Premium Outlets, the Batavia School Board, on April 22, approved a real estate tax rebate of more than $3 million back to the TIF district. The school district will receive future benefits, but TIF money is generally not disbursed until after the TIF expires.

The high priority projects would include $1.2 million (reduced to $850,000) for upgraded lighting systems at the middle

These projects could have been accountable from the $1.5 million capital and maintenance budget. The school board recently approved a lease valued at $1,440,000 for a storage facility, with an appraised value of $300,000.

The athletic department receives the balance of the proposed bond issue. These priority proj-

ects are $408,000 for tennis courts, $616,000 for a JV baseball field, another $535,000 for improvements in a varsity baseball field and $590,000 for a softball field.

The board still has not decided on a football stadium. The original proposal was for $4 million to replace the stadium. Now a new proposal has been presented with two synthetic turf football fields, with a cost of more than $7 million. The new presentation might or might not include a new stadium. Does the school board realize that the Bulldog Stadium does not completely meet the current ADA requirements?

How will the addition of a $1.5 million obligation to pay for the bonds affect the continued maintenance and capital improvements?

This bond referendum must be defeated in November because the Batavia School Board clearly has not determined how to spend the $15 million, and the taxpayers of Batavia cannot give this board a blank check.

ELBURN – Ethan Hastert’s time on the Elburn Village Board will come to an end a few months early. Hastert announced that Monday night’s meeting would be his final one as a board trustee, as he is moving to Campton Hills.

“This will be my last meeting,” Hastert said, moments before the meeting adjourned.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege.”

Hastert’s announcement means a replacement must be appointed to finish his term, Ethan Hastert which ends in April. Village President Dave Anderson said he would expect to have a new board member in place in November. Anderson said those interested may contact him. Hastert, 36, the son of former Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert, won a spot on the Elburn Village Board in 2011. Before successfully running for the Elburn board, Hastert previously lost a Republican primary race against Randy Hultgren for a seat in the 14th Congressional District.

Hastert has been part of key decisions while serving on the Elburn board, most nota-

bly the approval of the Elburn Station project, which was tied to the extension of Anderson Road and a bridge to cross the Union Pacific tracks. After the board went through a quiet period on the topic in 2012, it was Hastert who had the discussion on the topic added to the agenda.

He said he is moving into a larger house. He and his wife, Heidi, recently welcomed their fourth child – they have three boys and a girl, none older than 7. He said they looked in Elburn, but they are moving to an area just north of Route 38.

Hastert, an attorney, called his time on the Elburn board a “great education.” He complimented fellow board members, as well as Anderson and village staff. He said the village is “truly blessed” to have such people in place.

“It is a great place to raise a family,” he said. “I can’t say enough good things about it.”

After the meeting, Hastert was asked whether he would run for another position. Last year, when state Rep. New Animal Control executive impresses county leaders GENEVA – Kane County’s newest Animal Control leader only has been on the job since September, but Kane County Board members said Tuesday he already has exceeding their high expectations.

In his second appearance before the Public Health Committee – his first was two weeks after he started – Brett Youngsteadt summarized his first 30 days as administrator and his plans for the future.

His first month included meeting with the sheriff’s office and assistant state’s attorneys, building relationships with other county departments, completing an assessment on shelter resources and, he said, evaluating and updating operating procedures.

He hopes to launch a volunteer program by the end of the year, he said.

“We really need to start allowing people to volunteer at our facility,” Youngsteadt said.

He said such a program is important because it increases community involvement with Animal Control and, among other benefits, helps the animals get out of cages for more walks and socialization.

“Your thinking is right on,” board member Susan Starrett, R-Batavia, said of Youngsteadt’s consideration for the animals.

Youngsteadt also would like to change the Web address from www.co.kane.il.us/ AnimalControl to something easier to remember, like KaneCountyPets.com or KaneCountyAnimals.com, he said.

Board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, told Youngsteadt he likes his passion.

“You are a breath of fresh air,” Smith said.

Committee Chairman Monica Silva, D-Aurora, said Youngsteadt is exceeding expectations, which were high.

“Wonderful job,” she said.

Youngsteadt replaced former interim Administrator Robert Sauceda, who resigned amid a personnel investigation.

Geneva survives in shootout D’Onofrio boots winning goal in PKs

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva boys soccer team found itself in a familiar position at the end of regulation play of Tuesday’s second Class 3A Geneva Regional semifinal – tied at 2 with Plainfield North.

The Vikings ended six regular-season contests in a tie. State tournament matches cannot end in a tie, so the teams battled an extra 20 minutes to determine a winner, but they still were deadlocked.

The match was determined by a penalty-kick shootout that Geneva won, 5-4, to finally win the game, 3-2 The Vikings will play Benet, which defeated Oswego East, 4-0, in the first semifinal, Saturday for the regional crown.

Plainfield North (17-2-2) fought until the end, losing the shootout in the fifth and final round. In the first four rounds, both teams scored on their kicks.

In the fifth round, Matt D’Onofrio scored for Geneva and then Vikings goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull stopped the Tigers’ Jake Farley.

“There’s no other way to put it, that play won the game for us,” Geneva coach Ryan Estabrook said. “I think their No. 8 (Farley) was probably their best player. Maybe he was feeling some pressure at the end. Part of it was Duncan stretched out nicely on that one. He won the game for us.”

Geneva (7-4-6) was leading the game, 2-1, until about 15 minutes into the second half.

The Tigers tied the score at that point, scoring off a throw-in. As the teams battled to control the ball in front of the net, it came loose and Nicholas Anweiler had a shot at the unguarded goal.

Neither team was able to score after that, although the Vikings had several opportunities. Their shots on goal either went wide or were blocked by North goalkeeper Cade Fink.

“There were some situations where we almost had another goal, and unfortunately we weren’t able to put that third goal in, which I think would have sealed the game for us earlier,” Estabrook said.

“Plainfield North had double-digit wins this season for a reason. They found some scrappy ways to equalize, so part of the result is their quality of play.”

Geneva’s Jason Lagger scored the first goal 10 minutes into the first half.

The junior got past Fink at the right corner of the goal and shot the ball into an open net.

Plainfield North tied the score at 1 at the 14:41 mark of the first half.

Anweiler dribbled up the right sideline and passed the ball through Geneva defenders to Austin Collier, who booted it in from in front of the net.

Drew Klaus returned the lead to Geneva with five minutes left in the half. The junior headed in the ball on a throw-in by Matthew Luetzen from the right sideline.

editorial@kcchronicle.com BURLINGTON – In the opening 25 minutes of the Class 2A Burlington Central Regional semifinal between Kaneland and Sycamore, nothing separated the two Northern Illinois Big 12 foes.

That was until Kaneland’s Angel Escontrias’ opening goal midway through the first half to give the game some life. Two second-half goals by Ivan Bohorquez put the game to bed as the Knights beat the Spartans, 3-0, to advance to the championship.

“At first, we were kind of struggling,” Bohorquez said.

“But, by the end of the half, after we scored the first goal, we started to pick it up and started connecting more passes.”

Two minutes later, Escontrias received a pass at the top of the box, turned and fired toward goal. The shot sailed past Sycamore goalkeeper Dylan Nelson. The Knights held a 1-0 lead at halftime.

“In the first half, I don’t know if we were tentative or what, but I think that once we finally got the goal, that settled us down a little bit,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “At halftime, we just said that we need to play smarter.”

In the second half, the Knights started to apply pressure. Twelve minutes into the second half, Bohorquez collected the ball at midfield and started darting down the field.

The defense allowed the senior to run with the ball, and when Bohorquez reached shooting range, he made no mistake. Bohoroquez finished with composure and Kaneland led 2-0.

“At the beginning, they started teaming up on me pretty well,” Bohorquez said.

“But, they kind of backed off and they left me open, so I took the space and took advantage of it.”

Bohorquez scored his second goal off a corner kick, where the ball missed everyone in the box and went into the net.

Sycamore struggled to generate offense without senior forward Ivan Chavez, who missed the match with a concussion. The Spartans lost ball-winning midfielder Jarrett Brown early in the contest to a hip flexor injury. But, Sycamore coach David Bachta is taking nothing away from Kaneland.

“No excuses, Kaneland played an exceptional game,” Bachta said. “They are well coached and they are well organized. I think these kids have come a long way this year and I am really proud of where they came from and hope the best for the seniors.”

Kaneland will play Hampshire at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the regional title game.

Bulldogs coach Mark Gianfrancesco said the defensive scheme that Plainfield North ran made its transition difficult as it was unable to find space in the attacking third.

“I thought we stifled their play there,” Gianfrancesco said. “I wish we were a little better in the [midfield] the first half, got better there the second half. We were looking, really, because they played such a high line to play it over the top. When we did that, we were in on them, we just didn’t

finish the chances. We’ve got to be better doing that in the mid and in.”

The Bulldogs had plenty of chances to increase the lead in both halves but failed to convert, a view that resonated with both the coaching staff and the players.

“I think we need to work a little bit more on finishing,” Collins said. “We had a lot of chances to score, but we need to focus on putting them in the back of the net; 3-0, I think it’s a fine victory, but it could have been more. I think our team will learn to put them in the back of the net when it counts a little more and I believe in our team.”

Heinz cited his side’s depth as crucial in keeping the clean sheet and providing rest for key players in stretches.

“It’s really nice to have that depth, seeing how often we get fresh players on at the positions that need them like the outside mids that work really hard for us,” Heinz said. “The outside backs have to get all the way up the field so it’s really nice to sub them and get fresh feet in.”

The Bulldogs will take

on Neuqua Valley in Saturday’s regional final, where Gianfrancesco knows his side needs to execute more to continue to progress through the tournament.

“We just have to have a little more fire and a sense of urgency in front of the net,” he said. “Against better teams, you’re only going to have limited opportunities, so you have to finish the chances you get.

We did a good job of that with the set plays that we had, but the run plays, we just didn’t finish and didn’t put those away.”

The Bulldogs also gained valuable experience in the opener and should be better prepared for Saturday’s match.

“Hopefully, with this under some of those guys’ belts, with this match for some of those guys who haven’t played a playoff game before, hopefully, that will ease some of their insides where they can then be more composed in front of the net and finish some of those chances,” Ginafrancesco said.

“That will ease everybody’s stress levels moving forward, myself included.”

AURORA – The Plainfield East boys soccer team arrived 15 minutes late to its Class 3A Metea Valley Regional semifinal against Batavia, but the added time spent waiting around didn’t hinder the Bulldogs in a 3-0 victory Tuesday night.

Ian Larson, who already had two assists in the first half, scored the third goal for the Bulldogs in the 54th minute on a direct free kick from 20 yards away.

Larson’s left-footed strike deflected off a defender and in to all but seal what already had been a dominating performance for No. 2-seed Batavia.

In the first half, Batavia wore down the Bengals, who opted to come out in a defensive 4-5-1 alignment to keep the Bulldogs’ attack at bay.

It didn’t work, with Larson steering the offense from the onset.

Batavia opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Kevin Collins headed in a cross from Larson from the far corner past Plainfield East goalkeeper Isaias Marquez.

“I know Ian likes to go back post on the corner kicks, so I was just trying to put myself in a position to win the ball in the air and get it in the back of the net,” Collins said. “I just saw the ball kind of float in. I felt no one on me, so I just went up strong and put a good head on it, and it was in the back of the net.”

The Bulldogs’ attack immediately went back to work, with Marquez sliding to stop midfielder Brandon Yunker’s near-post shot a minute later.

The Bulldogs scored again in the 14th minute when Larson connected with Yunker, but the goal was disallowed on an offsides on a questionable late call.

Batavia continued to push up front and broke through for its second goal in the 25th minute when Adam Heinz cashed in on a rebound.

How has the focus been all year?

Geneva senior heading to West Point next fall The IHSA state tennis tournament can tax players’ conditioning mightily, with multiple, high-pressure matches against elite opposition each day.

Geneva senior Kirby Einck recognizes she’s in for a challenge, but nothing near as daunting as what awaits in the years to come.

Last month, Einck committed to West Point, where she will compete for the Army women’s tennis program. She has no military background in her immediate family, but her father, Jeff, was recruited to play football at Army before ultimately choosing Northern Illinois University.

Many aspects of West Point appealed to Einck, especially its structure and highly regarded academics. Then again, she acknowledged with a laugh that she’s “a little nervous about shooting a gun, if it comes to that.”

“It’s really going to be a tough four years, but it’s going to open so many doors for me,” Einck said of her nontraditional college plans.

“It’s such a great opportunity.

You just kind of have to get through the tough part to get the reward in the end.”

Einck was slotted Tuesday as a 17-32 seed in the singles

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab draw for the IHSA state tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday at various sites across the northwest suburbs. Speaking Monday night, Einck – 21-2 on the season, with her lone losses coming to defending state champion Tiffany Chen of Naperville Central – hoped for a better seed, but figured she likely Kirby Einck would end up in the 17-32 mix, recognizing that “north shore girls” tend to gobble many of the plum seeds.

This will be Einck’s fourth straight year in the state tournament, and she’s eyeing a deeper push. Her first-round match will be against Wauconda freshman Sarah Hackman, to be played at Palatine High School.

“I would like to win at least three matches in the main draw because I’ve never been able to go into Friday still in the main draw, but other than that, just try to play the best I can, and whatever happens, happens,” Einck said.

Chen is the tournament’s No. 1 seed. Despite her two losses to the Naperville Central star, Einck said she thinks she would have an intangible edge against Chen

if they meet for a third time in the later rounds.

“I think I’d be less nervous because all the pressure is on her,” Einck said. “I’m the underdog. It’d be an upset if I beat her, so I think if I were to go on and play her again, I would just swing free and know it doesn’t really matter because she’s the one who has to defend her title, I don’t.”

Einck will share a site Thursday with Kaneland singles standout Sammie Schrepferman, who also will open at Palatine against Glenbrook South’s Breck Murphy.

Schrepferman is part of a decorated Kaneland senior class that elevated the program dramatically in the past four years. Fellow Knights seniors Jelly Emmanouil and Madi Jurcenko are seeded 17-32 in the doubles draw, the only other seeded area entry besides Einck.

The area’s other state qualifiers are Grace Krueger (singles, Geneva), Ava Kolman (singles, St. Francis), Lianne Anderson and Emma Spellman (doubles, St. Charles North), Morgan Rerko and Brittany Rohrsen (doubles, St. Charles North), Megan Conlin and Maddy Deufel (doubles, Rosary), and Maisie Howland and Lily Bracy (doubles, Wheaton Academy).

Immanuel-Batavia’s top five runners were Melanie Williams (seventh grade) in third place with a time of 13:48, Tori Cammarano (eighth grade), Caroline Daniels (eighth grade) in ninth place, Anna Jerdee (seventh grade) in 14th place and Isabella Polizzotto (fifth grade) in 22nd place.

Home blood pressure device can help with monitoring Dear Doctor K: My doctor told me to check my blood pressure at home, but he didn’t give me many details. Could you provide some guidance?

Dear Reader: Keeping your blood pressure in check is vital to maintaining heart health and preventing stroke. But the way most of us monitor our pressure – by trekking to the doctor’s office for occasional blood pressure checks – is far from ideal.

For one thing, it provides isolated snapshots, rather than a complete picture. What’s more, measurements at the doctor’s office can be elevated. This phenomenon is known as “white-coat hypertension,” and it may affect as many as 25 percent of people.

Simply put, seeing their doctor – even me! – tends to raise the blood pressure of some people.

The flip side is “masked” high blood pressure. This is when your blood pressure looks fine in the doctor’s office but is higher at other times. Maybe some people feel more relaxed when they’re in the safety of their doctor’s office. Or perhaps their time in the doctor’s office is the only stress-free period of their day.

Several studies have shown that people who monitor their blood pressure at home have it

To measure your blood pressure at home, you’ll need a blood pressure cuff. You can buy a good one at a pharmacy or online for between $40 and $100. Get a cuff that inflates automatically, not one you have to pump up yourself.

And get one that fits around your upper arm and shows the results on a large, easy-to-read display.

The cuffs that fit around your wrist are less accurate.

To measure your blood pressure: 1. Sit at a table with your arm resting comfortably on it and your feet flat on the floor. It’s easier for most right-handers to take the pressure in the left arm, and vice versa.

2. Secure the blood pressure cuff snugly but not tightly around your bare upper arm.

3. Rest your arm on the table

in a relaxed posture, with the cuff at about the same level as your heart.

4. Relax for a minute or two, taking slow deep breaths, and then take the first reading.

5. Wait for at least two minutes and take another reading.

Take two measurements in the morning and two more in the evening. Take your measurements at about the same time every day.

Be consistent about taking them either before or after your coffee and medications. Avoid taking the measurements right after exercising.

Dear Teens: It doesn’t take long for readers to let me know when they disagree with my advice.

Anne was living with her divorced mother for four years, but three months ago her mom’s boyfriend moved into the house. Even though Anne liked him and he was good to her mother, she is embarrassed to have him living with her mother without being married. She discussed how she feels with her mom, but she was told marriage was not in the near future.

Anne wanted my view, and I told her not to make this a big issue and that it’s her mom’s life and she had to live it her way.

Declarer leads a card from the dummy, and you are next to play with a useful holding in that suit.

Obviously there will be occasions when you must play low smoothly and others when you can afford to pause to work out the best defense. But knowing which way to turn is often difficult.

In today’s deal, South pushes into six hearts. West leads the club 10. South takes the trick with his ace, plays a spade to dummy’s ace (West follows suit with the eight), and calls for the heart nine. Should East play low smoothly or win with his ace?

(Putting in the queen cannot be correct.)

“Second hand low” is right much more often than not. But here, if East does immediately follow suit with his heart five, South will probably also play low, the percentage play for only one heart loser. Then he will lose only one trump trick and make his slam.

East should notice that declarer cannot get back to the dummy to play hearts again. East has the spade king and diamond queen, and if South can play three rounds of clubs, East can overruff the dummy on the third round. So taking the first heart trick guarantees defeating the contract.
