Residents speak on forest preserve request ELBURN – A potential Forest Preserve District of Kane County purchase of land on Route 47 was not on the Elburn Village Board’s agenda Monday night, and it did not seem the subject would come up.

Both scheduled opportunities for public comment had passed before a village resident who was just arriving at the meeting, Amy Milz, asked to comment. It was allowed. She said she was surprised the topic wasn’t on the agenda and she “would like to know where it is going.”

Earlier this year, Elburn Village Board members heard from forest preserve district officials about buying property at 1001 S. Main St., which is on Route 47. The north parcel is in Elburn’s

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla village limits, and board members must provide permission for the purchase.

Board members had denied the request. The plan was to make it the home of the district’s Natural Resources Department.

In early October, forest preserve district officials returned with a plan that included the location of a business, Ralph Helm Inc., on a portion of the property in question. The business would sell lawn and gardening equipment and potentially could ease Elburn Village Board members’ concerns about potential lost tax

revenue.

Elburn leaders Monday launched into a recap for Milz, with Village President Dave Anderson explaining the village had not heard back from forest preserve district officials. Village Administrator Erin Willret pointed out the forest preserve has not yet bought the property.

At that point, another resident, Ellen Petersen, spoke up and asked about whether an effort could be made to get a general consensus from the public. She said she would plan to start some kind of petition addressing the issue.

“I don’t think it’s been brought up enough to the public,” Petersen said after the meeting.

The issue appears to be ongoing at this point. After

the Oct. 6 meeting, Drew Frasz, a member of the Kane County Board, spoke of a different location for the forest preserve district facility – one that was not controversial – which was south of Elburn. Kane County Board members also serve as forest preserve district commissioners.

Petersen said she just wants to make sure Elburn residents are in agreement with the board on the best use of the land.

“I don’t know that I have a preference of what I would like to see there,” Petersen said, adding, “We need more retail and industrial.”

Landlords sued in fatal St. Charles apartment fire

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The brother of a man who died in a St. Charles apartment fire is taking the property owners to court on accusations the residence did not have working smoke detectors, according to a lawsuit filed with the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office.

David Hawksley, 60, who lived in the second-floor apartment at 104 S. Third Ave., was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:47 a.m. Jan. 11. Firefighters arrived about 15 minutes ear-

lier and found smoke showing from a second-floor window and fire in the second-floor unit, officials have reported.

His brother, Keith Hawksley, claims in the lawsuit the landlords, Frank and Loreen Giampoli, did not provide working smoke detectors in all dwelling units, thus violating the Smoke Detector Act. “Because there were no operating smoke detectors in the apartment and/or building, David, without warning, did not have enough time to escape the fire, and instead, suffered fatal injuries,” the

New turn arrows debut on Randall Road in Geneva

In his monthly report to the Kane County Transportation Committee, Deputy Director of Transportation Tom Rickert on Tuesday noted the first flashing yellow left-turn arrow has been activated on Randall Road at

Glen Eagle Road in Geneva.

The light at Randall Road and Christina Lane, also in Geneva, was next in line, he said.

According to the Kane County Division of Transportation, flashing yellow arrows operate the same as solid green lights for left turns, but they better convey to drivers the need to yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians who might be crossing.

The new arrows also were planned for these intersections along Randall Road in Geneva and St. Charles: Fargo Road, Keslinger Road/Kaneville Road, Prairie Street, Oak Street, Dean Street, Red Haw Lane/ Oakcrest Circle, Red Gate Road, Bolcum Road/Ridgewood Drive and Silver Glen Road.

The signals were part of a broader project planned for Randall Road. Other upgrades

included driver feedback speed limit signs and additional signal heads at 17 intersections so each lane would have one. For example, KDOT officials have said, an intersection with two left-turn lanes, two through lanes and one dedicated rightturn lane would have five signal heads on the mast arm.

The affected intersections are Fabyan Parkway, Glen Eagle Road, Christina Lane,

Fargo Road, Keslinger Road/ Kaneville Road, Williamsburg Road, Bircher Road, Route 38, Prairie Street, Oak Street, Route 64, Dean Street, Red Haw Lane/Oakcrest Circle, Crane Road, Red Gate Road, Bolcum Road/Ridgewood Drive and Silver Glen Road.

Group seeks programs to keep the mentally ill out of jail

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Scott Ambrose said he was homeless for 5½ years, sleeping under bridges, in parks and parking lots and missions.

Ambrose of Elgin said he went through Kane County’s Treatment Alternative Court for those with mental illness to get help instead of going to jail.

Now with treatment and support from Ecker Center for Mental Health, regular AA meetings and self help groups,

Ambrose said he has an apartment “that is safe and clean.”

“I used to be sick and lonely and now I have friends,” Ambrose said.

Ambrose and others spoke to about 200 people at a community meeting Tuesday at the Congregational Church of Batavia to promote more programs for diversion and treatment instead of jail for people with mental illness.

Aldermen back use of search firm to fill electric position

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – All but one aldermen at the Batavia Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday was in support of using a search firm to fill a new city position that has gone unfilled.

The aldermen voted, 7-1, to recommend the Batavia City Council approve a recruiting service agreement between the city and Dowdy Recruiting LLC for the city’s Electric Engineer and Business Manager position.

Second Ward Alderman Marty Callahan voted against the recommendation. Before the vote, Callahan said Wendy Bednarek, the city’s human resources director still was owed a shot to try and find someone

for the unfilled position.

Two separate searches resulted with one viable candidate emerging and later deciding to withdraw from being considered, Bednarek said.

Bednarek and Public Works Director Gary Holm said Batavia is not viewed in a favorable light by some applicants because of the ongoing situation with the Prairie State Energy Campus.

The firm’s fee structure is 25 percent of the annual salary, and based on the annual salary maximum, the 25 percent would not exceed $30,690, Bednarek said.

The firm recently was able to find an applicant for an entity in Kentucky who also had dealings with Prairie State, she said.

Ebur urged the assembly to take steps to make others aware of the plight of people with mental illness, when they go to jail instead of get treatment with programs to be supported by federal grants and a riverboat grant next year.

Bill Scown of the Unitarian Universalist Society in Geneva and Jacki Bakker of Christ the Lord Lutheran Church in Elgin spoke about the high

cost of having mentally ill people in jail instead of receiving treatment.

Scown said the county spent more than $4.3 million incarcerating 1,900 mentally ill people in 2014.

Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and county board members Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles and Joseph Haimann, D-Carpentersville, also attended.

A DIFFERENT WORLD As breast cancer awareness grows, those affected finding more resources

W

hen Geralyn O’Brien talked about breast cancer Saturday to a group of about 40 girls at her daughter’s St. Charles dance studio, she delivered a message of hope and education.

The girls are with Dreams Dance Academy, which previously was in LaFox and Elburn. As part of the session, they wrote messages on cards O’Brien will take back to LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva. O’Brien, a Geneva resident, said she smiled as she read through what the girls wrote.

O’Brien considers herself a twotime breast cancer survivor. She first was diagnosed in 1998, when she was 42 years old. She again was diagnosed in 2013, and she said it was a different experience. In 1998, LivingWell, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, still was years away from existence. By her second diagnosis, LivingWell had become an established resource in the community, and she now is LivingWell’s lead oncology esthetician, meaning she provides cosmetology services.

The pink theme of Breast Cancer Awareness Month also has grown, and she said she has noticed it in many ways.

“It’s really, really nice to see the research that is being done,” O’Brien said, adding there is so much information now than there was after her first diagnosis.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month effort continues to grow. There are products in stores with pink packaging, and professional sports leagues have been incorporating the color into their schemes.

There also are many events and efforts made to boost awareness and raise money to fight breast cancer.

Locally, there was a recent Bunco for Breast Cancer event in Elburn. And an event called the Stiletto Sprint will be on Halloween in Geneva to raise money for LivingWell. In addition, at least one local company, Geneva-based Hogan Design and Construction, will donate a percentage of its scheduled project proceeds to an organization called Little Pink Houses of Hope, which provides retreat opportunities for breast cancer survivors and their families.

their mother is a breast cancer survivor. They wrote the company wanted to do something special for breast cancer awareness and sought an organization that “comforted survivors and their families before, during and after treatment.”

Meanwhile, those looking to share their thoughts can do so in downtown Geneva.

In a community garden area on Third Street, just north of the Kane County courthouse, Miscella Real Estate has planted a small tree, which has been named “Miss Ella.” During October, anyone interested is invited to use a marker and cards provided to write a message and hang it on the tree. As of Tuesday morning, there were dozens of cards hanging on the tree.

Patti Rambo, the owner of Miscella Real Estate, said the tree takes on a different theme each month.

“Rather than Halloween, she can serve a higher purpose by bringing awareness to breast cancer,” Rambo said.

Rambo said the cards will be removed at the end of the month, and a donation will be made to a breast cancer organization for each card. She said she has been

One day, she said, a group of teenage girls showed up to write out tags after a friend had lost her mother to cancer.

Rambo said the idea came from those at her office in Geneva.

“We all have relatives or close friends who have dealt with breast cancer,” Rambo said. “One of the girls in the office had two friends she lost to breast cancer.”

The Transportation Committee on Tuesday supported reducing the speed limit on a portion of Keslinger Road to better transition to the 35mph school zone.

Pending County Board approval, 45-mph signs would replace 50-mph signs on Keslinger Road 500 feet east of Dauberman Road and 500 feet

west of Meredith Road.

Deputy Director of Transportation Tom Rickert said the reduction allows for a 10mph transition from both the 55-mph speed limit on Keslinger Road and the school zone for Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

The change was prompted by parents requesting safety enhancements, Rickert said.

Committee Chairman Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said the issue arose mid-summer.

He said staff hope to implement the new speed limit by

the start of the 2016-17 school year in August.

“Staff acted extremely fast,” Frasz said.

The County Board is expected to vote on the issue Nov. 10.

Rickert said the new signs would be installed as soon as possible.

Other recent traffic improvements around Kaneland High School include flashing yellow signals to warn motorists of the school zone and signs indicating cellphone use is prohibited, Rickert said.

… I had been helping so many other people.”

Nancy Vance, LivingWell’s executive director, acknowledged the many efforts in the community, including a lot of third-party fundraisers. She said it’s been a big help, and the organization has been able to assist others during its 10 years of existence.

She said LivingWell now offers about 75 programs and 36 percent of its base is made up of breast cancer patients.

Vance said the mood is much different now than

when LivingWell began.

“There are so many people who talk about it now,” she said, adding “years ago, people thought it was a death sentence,” but people are living “longer than ever before with this disease.”

She said LivingWell has been serving 4,500 new cancer patients each year and “about 400 people walk through our doors every week.”

“We have been embraced by the community and are very, very humbled,” Vance said.

Kane County plans lower speed limit near Kaneland High School

“The nice thing is if we didn’t find a project we liked, we would not have to pay the award,” Halikias said. “It was better than putting up hundreds of dollars and not liking what they did.”

The new logo is part of a whole restructuring of the library’s outdated Web page at www.sugargrove.lib.il.us, she said. The current design has a lot of blue and little pictures, and it’s “really hard to find anything.”

“Our current Web page was created about 2009, and the version of technology we are using is 6 years old. It’s very, very, very dated and difficult for staff to update because it’s old,” Halikias said. “The goal is a user-friendly site that is easy for staff to put new content on.

Currently, it’s an ordeal.”

The new website will have a new, shorter Web address, sgpl.org, she said. The rede-

signed website should be easy for patrons and the public to view everything from the library’s hours to paying fines, checking the catalog and viewing financial documents, agendas and minutes of the library board, she said.

At the earliest, the new Web page could be ready in late spring next year because the staff is going to do most of the work, using a free software, she said.

Some aspects that are too technical will have to be outsourced she said.

“If anyone wants to assist and take this on a project, contact me at 630-466-4684 and take us on,” Halikias said. “We are happy to accept help.”

Ralph Eugene Conley, age 90, of Batavia, IL, formerly of Geneva and West Chicago, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Michaelsen Health Center, Batavia, surrounded by a loving family who kept constant vigil with him.

He owned and operated Conley Pharmacy for nearly 26 years.

Ralph was a member of the Boys Club of Geneva, Blackberry Masonic Lodge AF&AM #354, Elburn and a former member of the West Chicago Rotary. He was awarded for his contributions and dedication to the city of West Chicago, Citizen of the Year in 1973.

Ralph is survived by Ferne, his wife of nearly 70 years; three children, Pamela Kautz of Iowa City, IA, Philip (Melissa “Missy”) Conley of St. Charles, and Roger (Debora “Debbie”) Conley of Geneva, IL; five grandchildren, Sandra (Richard) Echternacht, Robert Kautz, Ryan Conley, Kelli (John) Evans and Gavin (Christina) Hayes; four great-grandchildren, Connor & Ethan Echternacht and Jordan & Eli Hayes; 6 nieces and nephews, Karen (Leslie) Howard, Dianne (Dr. Richard) Londo, Ladora (Larry) Eberle, Page (Carol) McCloud, Alan (Nancy)

SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Public Library has a new logo that features a sugar maple in earth tones with branches that form the arms over the faces of patrons.

Executive Director Shannon Halikias said the old one, which looked like the side windows of the library, had no real meaning unless the person viewing it already knew what the library looks like.

“A logo needs to convey a thought or a concept to the person who looks at it,” Halikias said. “We have the maples of Sugar Grove and the faces of patrons. They don’t pop out at first, but you see them as the faces and the branches of the tree, that represents the arms of our patrons. And the leaves of the maple are leaves of a book, too.”

The logo came from an open competition on a service called crowdSPRING for graphic design. The library district paid a $48 fee, provided a narrative of what staff and board members were looking for and then received 95 design concepts from 43 graphic artists, Halikias said.

After choosing the top three, library officials narrowed it to the one they eventually chose and paid the artist $300, she said. The district decided to use this service after a manager attended a marketing

Fitch Ratings has downgraded the rating on $26.8 billion in outstanding Illinois general obligation bonds to “BBB+” from “A-,” according to a news release issued Monday.

The ratings on bonds related to the state based on its appropriation have been downgraded to “BBB” from “BBB+” as well, the news release stated. The rating outlook has been revised from negative to stable.

The downgrade reflects the continued deterioration of the state’s financial flexibility during its extended budget impasse, according to the release.

Illinois’ “inability to balance its operations, eliminate accumulated liabilities and grow reserves during a period of economic expansion leaves it far more vulnerable to the next economic downturn,” the release stated.

After four years of nominally balanced operations that benefited from temporary tax increases, the fiscal 2015 budget only was balanced through extensive one-time action, according to the release. A budget has not been enacted for fiscal 2016, which began July 1.

The state continues to spend in most areas at the fiscal 2015 rate, which is expected to lead to a sizable deficit.

As was the case during the most recent recession, this deficit spending likely is to be addressed by deferring state payments and increasing accumulated liabilities, the release stated.

The state’s debt burden is above average, and unfunded pension liabilities are exceptionally high, according to the release.

The state has limited flexibility with regard to pension obligations after the May Illinois Supreme Court decision that found the 2013 pension reform unconstitutional.

Clean fleece, dirty planet

By JAMES GREIFF Bloomberg News It’s getting cold. Time to break out the fleece. Warm and light, it even comes in a nice shade of “green,” as a lot of the material used to make fleece comes from recycled plastic bottles – better in your sweater than in a landfill.

Green that is, until you run it through the washing machine.

That’s when thousands of plastic microfibers get flushed into the sewer system and on to some stream, lake, river and ocean.

In a world where greenhouse gas threatens to bake the planet, this might not seem so worrisome – except that scientists are starting to suspect it is. Fleece is polyester, which isn’t biodegradable. It’s made from oil, and – like most plastic – it’s almost immune to the elements. These tiny bits of plastic end up being consumed by small fish and filter-feeders such as oysters and clams. The stuff can then make it up the food chain and, potentially, into people. Scientists still are trying to figure out how much of a risk this is to human health.

There’s an added concern. PCBs and other contaminants tend to stick to microfibers. For marine life, consuming plastic is bad enough; consuming plastic glued to toxins has to be worse.

This microscopic junk is almost everywhere; during a single washing, one sweater will shed almost 2,000 fibers. One team of researchers gathered sand from 18 beaches on six continents. They didn’t find one that was free of the microfibers. The highest concentrations were found on beaches near cities – in other words, where a lot of people wash a lot of clothing.

Some modest progress is being made to get plastic out of our water. Another major source of microscopic plastic waste is what’s known as microbeads – those little granules in your body scrub, soap and toothpaste that exfoliate your skin or help scour crud off your teeth. These tiny bits of plastic

make the same journey as microfibers, passing through sewage treatment systems and into rivers, lakes and streams.

Microbeads, which often are heavier than water, are so prevalent that they’re covering the bottoms of the Great Lakes in a layer of plastic sediment. Earlier this month California adopted a law banning use of microbeads starting in 2020. At least six other states have passed bans, though most states allow a loophole for microbeads that are supposed to be biodegradable.

Don’t expect states to start banning fleece, though. That would be radical (though wool producers might cheer). Instead, there are several possible ways to limit microfiber pollution.

One might be to produce fleece that sheds less. Patagonia, one of the best-known purveyors of fleece garments, is funding research and is working with a company called Tersus Solutions to develop waterless manufacturing systems.

Processing textiles uses and contaminates staggering amounts of water.

Another way would be to outfit washing machines with filters to capture the fibers before they head down the drain. And some researchers have suggested that a better place to capture the fibers would be at sewage treatment plants.

Here’s one thing to make you feel better about fleece – natural fibers, like cotton and wool, have their environmental downsides, too. Yes, the fibers they shed degrade naturally. But growing cotton requires vast amounts of land, water, pesticides and fertilizer, while raising sheep has caused shocking degradation of millions of acres in countries such as South Africa and Australia.

So, maybe the thing to do is keep your fleece. Only don’t wash it until it’s really, really dirty.

Persistent ’Dogs rally past Cadets in regional semifinal win

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com AURORA – Batavia boys soccer coach Mark Gianfrancesco knew it probably wouldn’t be the smoothest of games Tuesday night as his Bulldogs opened the postseason with a regional semifinal against Marmion.

But they found a way.

Senior Luke Laurich scored just before halftime to calm the Batavia nerves, eventually leading the Bulldogs to a 4-1 win over the Cadets to advance to the Class 3A Waubonsie Valley Regional championship game against Neuqua Valley on Saturday night.

“I liked the effort,” Gianfrancesco said. “Once we got the first one, we got a lot more relaxed. We kind of settled in it pretty good. We started communicating and connecting passes, and I think that first goal helped quite a bit.”

Laurich tallied his second goal of the match for Batavia (7-9-5) on a penalty kick 12 minutes into the second half that was the back-breaking goal for Marmion (9-8-3).

Although the primary reason to practice penalty kicks was in case playoff games went the distance and required penalty kicks for a winner, Batavia finished up Monday’s practice with a series of shots from the spot. Laurich’s shot to the low right corner beat Cadets goalkeeper Danny Galush.

It took a little bit of time, but Batavia knew if it kept knocking on the door with chances, eventually a breakthrough would come.

“It all started clicking out there for us,” Laurich said. “After that first goal, everything seemed to be not necessarily easier, but more fluid. But we more precise with everything we did and found a lot of the things we wanted to come in

Plus, with the feel of playoff soccer, anything can happen and Gianfrancesco doesn’t go into any match feeling his team can-

“We have a lot of work to do to be ready for that game,” Gianfrancesco said. “They are very skilled in the attacking game, as you saw with what they did to us early in the season, but we’ll continue to work this week.

“This is the game we wanted to be playing in,” Gianfrancesco added. “You wanted to be playing this team again, because we knew that meant we were playing for a regional title.”

Jimmy Perrault made five saves in goal for the Bulldogs, while Galush had four of his own for Marmion.

Since the new unis didn’t have the full complement of digits, several North Stars had to switch jersey numbers at the last minute. As a result, the PA announcer misidentified North players during the first half, including Alex Amro.

The senior striker was correctly acknowledged when it mattered, however. Amro scored the first of the North Stars’ four second half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over the Mustangs at Millennium Field.

“We were a different team in the second half. I feel like there was more hunger, more want in the second half and that was the difference,” North coach Eric Willson said. “At this point in the

In the first half, most of the action took place on the Rolling Meadows (7-11-1) side of the pitch, but North was unable to use that advantage to score a goal.

The North Stars took 11 shots in the first 40 minutes, but none of them found the net. Mustangs goalkeeper Pan Zervas stopped six of the attempts while the remaining shots went wide.

Amro broke the scoreless tie three minutes into the second half with a shot in front of the goal.

“At halftime, we all realized that we could pick up the intensity because we came out a little bit slow in the first half,” Amro said. “I knew we were on their side of the time in the first half, but we weren’t able to get our chances off. We turned up the defensive pressure so they would turn the ball over and then we got lucky off of it.”

“I broke open as I was coming back into the middle,” Dizdarevic said. “I was giving my body up as you have to do in a game like this. I was able to get the ball to my right foot, my strong foot, and score.”

Fellow senior forward Mitch Dorsey was set up Dizdarevic for the winning goal with a pass through Conant defenders.

“I thought they could have gotten another couple scores after that penalty kick,” Jennison said, noting that all the momentum was going Conant’s way for the rest of the half.

Justin Stepien got the Saints on the scoreboard with a goal with 37:44 to play in the first half.

The Saints had a golden opportunity to add to their first-half lead when a Cougar defender was called for a handball in the box with 21:32 to play.

However, Conant goalie Christian Hyde was able to deny Andrew Thuer’s penalty kick with a diving stop.

NAPERVILLE – Geneva boys soccer players encountered applause after Tuesday’s Class 3A Naperville North Regional semifinal against Plainfield Central.

It came after a familiar act, but not a desired result.

Following custom, the Vikings jogged to the far sideline and back after the match to acknowledge their fans.

Leaning against an adjacent fence, the Geneva faithful immediately saluted a season that ended with a 3-0 loss to the Wildcats.

“Unfortunately, we just didn’t execute well enough tonight offensively or defensively, but I really was proud of how hard a lot of these guys played until the very end,” Vikings coach Ryan Estabrook said. “The game was decided, but we still were playing hard, trying to make the most of the situation.”

Knights season ends in a flurry, as early lead disappears

By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com HAMPSHIRE – The Kaneland boys soccer team was getting close to earning an upset victory, but then it was Slomkowskied.

The Knights led Fenton, 1-0, late in Tuesday’s Class 2A Hampshire Regional semifinal, but they gave Bison senior Jakub Slomkowski far too much time inside the left side of the penalty box with about 17 minutes remaining.

Slomkowski showed stellar ballhandling skills before ripping a hooking shot past Kaneland goalkeeper Andrew Mathys.

That one great shot seemingly deflated Kaneland as the Bison added three more goals in the final 16:10 to win, 4-1, and advance to Friday’s regional championship against either Burlington Central.

The Knights finished their season at 8-8-4.

“I thought we played well,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “We were leading them for (63) minutes. I don’t think the score really tells how well we played. We played really well.”

After a scoreless opening five minutes, the teams had to leave the field for a mandatory 30-minute lightning delay.

Once play resumed, it didn’t take long for the Knights to strike.

They had the better run of play for the majority of the half and delivered their lone goal of the game with 28:20 on the clock.

Senior Sam Wolf’s shot just missed going in, caroming off the right post, where junior Angel Escontrias collected the rebound and then assisted senior Drew Franklin.

“They had a great game plan against us,” Fenton coach Dave Alvarez said.

“They were playing a very

The Knights created a few more scoring chances in the opening half, but just couldn’t get that insurance goal. Shots by sophomore John McCaffrey, as well as Wolf and seniors Mark Dhom and Jon Turyna couldn’t find the back of the net.

That kept the Bison with striking distance, but it took them awhile to deliver.

Unfortunately, when they finally connected, they took the game over.

“It kind of snowballed on us then,” Parillo said.

“Our guys gave effort today, though, so I’m not upset, not disappointed. It’s just a little weird to have our season end this early. It’s been years when we last ended the season so early.”

It took only 39 seconds after Fenton tied the game for the Bison to take the lead for good on Juan Ayala’s goal.

They received an insurance goal from Darwin Medina with 8:44 left and then added another one with 5:09 remaining.

“My hat’s off to Kaneland,” Alvarez said. “They played their hearts out, but unfortunately there had to be a loser.”

NORTH AURORA – Fox Valley Golf Club, a venue for regional golfers for more than four decades, will close permanently after hosting its final rounds Nov. 1.

The course and banquet facility at 2500 N. River Road was hampered by aging infrastructure requiring more than $1 million in upgrades and the competitive Fox Valley golf market.

Earlier this year, the Aurora City Council voted unanimously to sell the facility to Michigan-based Odawa Devel-

“The City of Aurora and golf staff want to thank patrons who have continued to support the Fox Valley Golf Club over the past 40 years,” Jeff Schmidt, Aurora PGA operations manager, said in a statement.

18 The vitamin pills you

need and don’t need

Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in December 2011.

Dear Dr. K: I’m a 35-year-old woman who has taken vitamin pills since I was a girl. Some people tell me they don’t help, and may even hurt me. What’s the truth?

Dear Reader: I’ll never pretend to tell you the “truth” in this column, because I don’t always know what it is. And I’ve seen what people considered to be the truth change. But I will give you my best current assessment of what scientific studies show.

First of all, there’s no question that you need vitamins. In fact, they are substances all of us need to live. In developing nations, many people are made very sick and even die because of severe vitamin deficiencies.

Most of us in developed nations, however, get most of the vitamins we need in our diet – even if we’re not always eating a perfectly balanced diet.

Many of today’s foods are fortified with vitamins.

Let me begin by listing the two vitamins that I think many people need to take. First, women like you who are of childbearing age should take a folic acid (or folate) pill (400 micrograms daily) to protect against birth defects in their babies, should they get pregnant.

Large scientific studies have proven the value of taking this vitamin.

The other vitamin to consider is vitamin D. Based on current evidence from scientific studies, many experts recommend that older adults take a vitamin D pill every day. Opinions vary as to the amount, but I would recommend 1,000 International Units of vitamin D3 every day to people age 60 and over. People of any age with low blood levels of vitamin D, or with bone

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff diseases like osteoporosis, also should take vitamin D. Large studies are underway to see if other people could benefit from daily vitamin D pills, as well. I’m betting that the studies will show such a benefit, but I could be wrong. That’s why we do studies: Facts matter a lot more than opinions.

There are risks to taking vitamin pills in high doses. For example, high doses of vitamin A can increase the risk for osteoporosis. Beta carotene pills, a form of vitamin A, can increase the risk of lung cancer in people at high risk, such as smokers. High-dose vitamin C can cause kidney stones.

Some people in the United States and other developed nations are at risk for vitamin deficiency diseases. This includes alcoholics, poor people with poor nutrition, people with diseases that impair their digestion (like Crohn’s disease) or vegans who are at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency.

What about taking a multivitamin pill each day? There is little evidence that it either helps you or hurts you. They’re not very expensive, and they’re an easy way to fill any nutritional gaps.

If you do decide to take a multivitamin, look for a brand that contains enough vitamin D. Finally, because you are a young woman, don’t forget my advice about the daily folic acid pill.

It’s very important, even if you don’t intend to become pregnant: Sometimes pregnancy is an unintended surprise.

Don’t suffer with a name you hate Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and will attend college in the fall of 2016. My school days have been marred because of my unusual full name. People who don’t know me find it difficult to pronounce -- and a lot of people who do know me make fun of it.

I plan to legally change my name as soon as I turn 18.

This bothers my family. They show me movie stars, musicians and even politicians who have difficult names to pronounce. They say that no one today changes their names. But I hate my name, and I’m going to change it.

Nothing is going to change my mind.

As a regular reader of your column, I know this is the advice you give teens who dislike their names, so I’m sure you’ll agree with me. But I’d be happy if you would print my letter so I could show your answer to my family. Maybe they’ll finally see things my way. – T.J., San Antonio, Tex. T.J.: By all means, change your name. Why should you suffer your whole life with a name you hate? You can’t change your heredity, but you can change your name -- it’s easy, and no one should make you feel guilty for doing so, not even your parents.

Yes, most people keep the names they were given at

Some people even find their names too ordinary and, in adulthood, pick a name with more flair; Susan Weaver, for instance, became Sigourney Weaver. But most people who change their names go the other direction.

This is a personal matter, and comparing one person’s decision about his or her name with another’s is pointless. I’m sure screen actor Marion Morrison was quite pleased he changed his name to John Wayne.

Dr. Wallace: Why is it that when a boyfriend breaks up with you, you always get upset with the new girl he dates, especially if the new girl just happens to be one of your good friends? Let me give you an example.

Lance and I broke up after going together for seven months. We both wanted our freedom to date others. About a month ago I started seeing Mike, and I really like him a lot and wouldn’t even consider dumping Mike to go back with Lance. No way!

Last week Lance started dating Amy, who is one of my friends. Now I find myself becoming upset at Amy and Lance. Why is this? – Name-

nature to want a discarded item returned when you discover someone else wants it. Many times I’ve observed a young child ignore a particular toy for weeks, but as soon as a playmate gets interested in it, the toy is suddenly precious and not to be shared.

Dr.Wallace: Please answer my question. It is extremely important to me. Do you think that adoptive parents can love their children as much as natural parents love their children? I’m 12, and I’m adopted.

Adoptive parents wanted to be parents and some biological parents merely had no choice.

In the bidding, North is right to open one club, not one diamond. Open one diamond on a three-card suit only with 4-4-3-2 distribution: two four-card majors. Note also West’s two-club overcall. Nowadays, top pairs use a two-level overcall in a minor bid by an opponent or in responder’s major as natural. With 5-5 in the unbid suits, they jump to two no-trump. Also, North was right to raise to two spades with four-card support.

West should check out the highcard points. (Doing this on every deal would significantly improve your results.) He has 13, dummy has 13, and South had enough to jump to game.

East surely does not have a high heart honor.

And if East does not, West can see only three tricks: one spade and two clubs.

Rather than worry too much about where the fourth trick might come from, West should immediately lead a third club so that East can ruff away dummy’s queen.

Here, this works better than West could have hoped, because East ruffs with his spade queen. This effects an uppercut that gives the defenders two trump tricks.
