Corner Grind opens in downtown Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – With the day’s specials written out with colorful chalk on a hanging blackboard, a customer sitting next to an open laptop computer and a sign reading “Free Wi-Fi,” Corner Grind in Elburn opened on Monday, featuring the look of a classic coffee shop.

Elburn resident Tony Cobb has opened the eatery, and he was there Monday morning with his wife, Ann, and employees Jacob Roberge, Emily Rowley and Jennifer Hokinson at the business at 2 S. Main St., in downtown Elburn. Tony Cobb said there ultimately would be eight total employees, including his wife and him.

Tony Cobb said the first day had been “awesome.” He described Monday as a “soft opening,” with a grand opening and a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for the next couple of weeks. At that point, he said, sandwiches and salads will be part of the menu. For now, there are specialty coffees, smoothies and pastries.

The building previously housed a bakery shop called Made From Scratch. Tony Cobb said he used to drive past it on the way to the Elburn Forest Preserve, and he was curious about the building. He said when he noticed the “for sale” sign that was there at the time, he started thinking about opening the eatery.

Tony Cobb said Corner Grind would be open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, but he said he is open to changing the hours based on customer response.

He said the restaurant has been training for the past three weeks, inviting those from nearby businesses to try out the products. He said the location in downtown Elburn, north of the train tracks, is ideal. He said the area has great bars and restaurants, but there had been “really nowhere for people to come together” in a coffee shop setting.

Longtime St. Charles alderman won’t seek re-election in April

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man who has served on the City Council since 1971 announced on Monday he won’t seek re-election in the April 7 consolidated election.

“All good things have to come to an end,” 4th Ward Alderman Jim Martin said during the regular City Council meeting on Monday night.

Martin was first elected in 1979 and kept his seat in each subsequent election. He said

he has attended 1,031 consecutive Monday-night council meetings mostly in person.

When he had a life-threatening bout with meningitis in 1999, he attended via phone conference.

Martin attended his first City Council meeting on Nov. 1, 1971, as a resident who wanted to learn about the Cumberland Green housing project on the city’s east side.

“The city has grown drastically, and I’m proud of the community we have become,” Martin said.

Martin has served with five mayors, including current St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina.

The city will defer its recognition of Martin until next year when his term officially expires – until then there still is work to be done, Rogina said.

“We know the city appreciates all that you have done for it,” Rogina said, followed by a round of applause from him, the nine aldermen, city staff and the rest of the meeting’s attendees.

Geneva OKs resolution on Prairie State lawsuit

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously approved a resolution for a common interest agreement between Geneva, Batavia, Rochelle and the Northern Illinois Power Agency.

Monday’s vote followed a half-hour closed session, which authorized city attorney Charles Radovich execute the agreement on Geneva’s behalf.

Batavia, Geneva and Rochelle are named respondents in discovery in a lawsuit filed in August by Batavia businessman Joe Marconi over the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus.

In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia, Geneva and Rochelle are members, agreed to a long-term contract to purchase electricity from Prairie State.

Radovich said the defendants petitioned the Seventh Circuit Federal Court to take the case instead of having it heard in Kane County. The request is pending, he said.

“The common interest agreement … will really help the city attorneys that are members of NIMPA coordinate and discuss any discov-

ery requests that they may make if the case comes back to state court – and there is no certainty that it would come back,” Radovich said.

The six-page document declares a common interest among the cities and NIMPA, as they will be developing responses and preparing depositions and providing documents as the litigation moves forward.

The document states it is in all their best interests to pool some of their individual work

and cooperate in some joint efforts.

The aspects of the joint effort include sharing information, legal research, legal theories and producing documents, according to the resolution.

As respondents in discovery, the cities and the power agency are not defendants, but could become defendants, the resolution states.

The resolution states that any party can withdraw from the agreement at any time.

Residents renew call for electric project investigation

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Residents at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting repeated their call for the city to ask Attorney General Lisa Madigan to investigate Prairie State Energy Campus.

“The details of who knew what [and] when is still not known today,” said resident Betsy Zinser, in addressing aldermen. Zinser and others presented a letter to aldermen signed by more than 1,000 residents calling for an investigation.

Aldermen at a Joint Committee of the Whole meeting in September unanimously recommended the city should ask Madigan to conduct an investigation. Mayor Jeff Schielke said the city attorney is in the process of drafting the language for the request for an investigation.

He said the full City Council is set to vote on the request for an investigation at its next meeting in November.

“We expect that this action will be taken in the very near term,” Schielke said.

That statement received loud applause from audience mem-

bers.

The action follows on the heels of Batavia businessman Joe Marconi recently filing a class-action lawsuit in Kane County Circuit Court over the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State Energy Campus.

Geneva and Rochelle are other members.

Through its power sales agreement with NIMPA, Batavia is obligated to buy 45.8 percent, or about 55 megawatts of the power generated

by Prairie State. Geneva is obligated to buy 29.2 percent (35 megawatts), and Rochelle is obligated to buy 25 percent (30 megawatts).

Earlier this year, state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, asked Madigan to investigate Prairie State Energy Campus.

Schmitz had said the letter reflected his concern regarding cost overruns on the $5 billion project and the impact on participating communities that might have to pass the cost along to ratepayers.

Acosta’s Haunted House draws big crowds to St. Charles Township home

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – If you can’t stand clowns, then you might not be able to handle Acosta’s Haunted House. The same goes for those fearful of zombies, creepy children and a man with a chainsaw.

“It’s basically everything that people hate the most,” Chris Acosta said.

Chris Acosta, her husband, Cesilio, and their daughters work with a group of volunteers every year to put on Acosta’s Haunted House, an attraction that utilizes most of their St. Charles Township property. The house opened Oct. 10, and its final dates for the season are from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

It usually takes the family about a month to set up the entire haunted house display, but they crammed it into two weeks because of the opening of their third Acosta’s Consignment store in Batavia.

The Acostas had always decorated their place elaborately for Halloween, but in 2009 they started opening it to residents for a $5 admission.

The money raised from the house every year goes to a local organization or cause, and this year’s recipient is the LivingWell Cancer Resource Center in Geneva.

“Long before [Cesilio and I] met, we always liked scary movies, and we always liked haunted houses,” Chris Acosta said.

Visitors first enter the house in groups of six or seven, through a 16-foot-tall castle facade. The adventure then continues through a cemetery, a forested area and finally a detached three-car garage set up like a maze.

Tom Nemec, who lives across the street from the Acostas, is known as the “Bushman” or “Moss Man.” He wears a ghillie suit to blend into the landscape and catch some of the haunted house attendees off guard.

Nemec has participated in the haunted house every year since it started in 2009.

He said he didn’t need much convincing to join the cause because he shares the Acostas’ warped sense of humor.

Chris Acosta is clear that the haunted house isn’t for young children, but the house still has plenty of fans.

Faly Colaizzi of Bartlett said she brings carloads of people to the Acosta property every

year for some scares.

“I’ve been going to her house for many, many years,” Colaizzi said. “I just find it so inspirational and spectacular.”

Chris Acosta won a copy of Colaizzi’s book “Haunted Nights at Drumheller Castle: A St. Charles Tall Tale” and loved it. The two became good friends, and Colaizzi has even included Chris Acosta in her next book.

Colaizzi said that the Acostas are such a giving family. Past recipients of the haunted house proceeds include The Salvation Army food pantry, Lazarus House and Suicide Prevention Services.

This is the second consecutive year the Acostas will give proceeds to LivingWell.

LivingWell appreciates every dollar it receives because it is not state or federally funded, said Nancy Vance, LivingWell’s executive director. The center served about 3,500 people in 2013 and is expecting another 3,000 newly diagnosed patients by year’s end.

“Without that funding, we just wouldn’t be able to do all that we can,” Vance said.

Chris Acosta said the haunted house this year has raised $2,500 so far, and she hopes that the final weekend brings in another $1,000.

“The family doing this has evolved into something more than Halloween,” Acosta said. “It’s combined our love of Halloween and doing something for the community.”

St. Charles, who are celebrating 50 years of marriage. Lynne Casey said she wasn’t as nervous walking down the aisle this time around.

“But it meant more because of all the years we’ve shared together,” she said.

They were married in 1964, shortly after Jim Casey, who was in the U.S. Navy at the time, returned home from a year-long mission in the South Pole as part of Operation Deep Freeze.

“We were married two weeks later,” Lynne Casey said.

For the past 60 years, more than 1,000 couples have exchanged vows at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church.

“We have at least 25 to 30 weddings a year,” Zajac said.

During the ceremony, she reminded the couples of the special bond they share between them.

“True love is precious,” Zajac told them. “It can only be given and received as a gift.”

ST. CHARLES – A store with apparel for men big and tall will open today in place of one of the company’s other stores on St. Charles’ west side.

Destination XL, 962 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, will offer apparel and accessories with sizes starting at a 38-inch waist or XL including tall sizes, plus shoe sizes 10-16, in widths to 4E, according to a news release issued Monday by Destination XL Group.

The store was previously known as Casual Male XL, and Destination XL Group currently operates the Casual Male XL retail and outlet stores.

The company is in the process of transitioning from Casual Male XL to focus primarily on the Destination XL concept, according to the news release.

ST. CHARLES – Twenty-five years ago, Jay and Christine Fregeau were married by a judge, with a priest in attendance.

On Saturday, the couple got the church wedding they always wanted as they reaffirmed their vows along with 18 other couples in a ceremony at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles.

“What a joy it is to be in the presence of so many strong marriages,” said the Rev. Mary Zajac, as she presided over the ceremony. The church this year is celebrating its 60th anniversary in its current location, and the ceremony was part of the festivities.

Christine Fregeau said they always wanted a church wedding. But the ceremony was even more special for them because their daughter, Taylor Fregeau, and her fiancé, Scott Knight, will be getting married next summer at the church.

“It made it more real and exciting,” Taylor Fregeau said.

As summer came and went with numerous events, we would like to thank our sponsors and everyone who participated. We started summer with our annual Paddle Boat Mixer on the Fox River in June, although the torrential downpours kept us from exiting the paddle boats at the end – the extra time was used for some additional networking.

Between luncheons and ribbon-cuttings, the chamber also hosted Tuesday Night Cruise Nites, open to the public on First Street in July and August. We had great radio stations come out every week to play music, a face painter to enlighten the children’s faces, food and other vendors all set up for eight weeks of summer fun. The chamber’s 39th annual Golf Outing was a huge success this year. Once out on the course – after a delay to the start, because of the uncooperative weather – golfers were appreciative of the beautiful weather the rest of the day. Everyone had a great time finding out the winners of the raffle, 50/50 and restaurant gift certificates. We look forward to next year celebrating the 40th anniversary of the chamber

Chamber of Commerce Week was celebrated all over Illinois last month from Sept.

8 through 12. Here at the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, we had a busy week with many events planned: Open House Monday, After Hours Mixer Tuesday, a behind-the-scenes tour of the Arcada Theater and then finishing up with a beneficial speed-networking event.

The chamber members who attended these events were pleasantly surprised with a number of things: great attendance at the events; staggered times of events, making it easy for anyone to join; and – of course – networking. We received so many compliments on how the week went so well and the increasing number of new businesses. After this wonderful week at the chamber, we had time to reflect. The growth of our chamber this year has been remarkable. We are happy and excited to announce we have 160 new members so far this year; that is already double the number of new members last year. This year, we have administered 45 ribbon-cuttings and anniversary celebrations, making this a successful and busy year for our chamber.

All of this excitement has encouraged the chamber to try new events and add more opportunities for businesses to get involved. We have heard numerous success stories and think it is important to share

Born: Jan. 13, 1917; in St. Charles, IL Died: Oct. 17, 2014; in St. Charles, IL Mary Danielsen, age 97, passed away October 17, 2014, in St. Charles, Illinois. She was reportedly the oldest continuous resident of St. Charles at her passing.

Mary was born January 13, 1917, to Cyril and Emerence Ryckeghem in their home at 11th and Dean Streets. She married the love of her life, Einar Danielsen, on October 29, 1938 at St. Patrick’s Church in St. Charles.

Mary was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s and St. John Neumann Catholic Churches. She graduated in St. Patrick School’s first graduating class in 1930.

In 2014, she was honored as St. Patrick’s Alumna of the Year. She graduated from St. Charles High School in 1934. Mary began her working life at Moline Malleable Iron Company, where she met her husband Einar. After raising her two children, Vernon and Carol, she began her second career at Rex’s Drive-In Restaurant. Being a fun loving person she enjoyed sharing jokes with the kitchen staff. In her quiet way, she shared happiness with everyone around her.

Mary was a member of the Danish Brotherhood and Danish Sisterhood, with local lodges in St. Charles and the St. John Neumann’s Silver Foxes.

She contributed her knowledge of Belgian immigrants and Belgiumtown in St. Charles to the St. Charles History Museum.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Einar; brother, Carl Ryckeghem; and sister-in-law, Lois Ryckeghem.

She is survived by her son, Vernon Danielsen (Carol) of Roanoke, Virginia; daughter, Carol Hunecke (David) of St. Charles; and sister, Augusta Raap of Lynchburg, Virginia; grandsons, Eric Danielsen (Joni) of Roanoke, Ian Danielsen (Ruth), Paul Anthony Danielsen (Karen) both of Richmond, Virginia, Michael Hunecke (Anessa) of Olympia, Washington, John Hunecke (Andrea) of St. Charles, and Christopher Hunecke (Krissy) of

Batavia. Mary had eleven great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.

Visitation will be held at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street in St. Charles on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John Neumann Church at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. Burial will be at River Hills Cemetery in Batavia.

BATAVIA – A 38-year-old man charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual abuse is due in court Wednesday for a status hearing.

Sean Loftis, of the 1300 block of McClurg Drive, Batavia, was charged this month with criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual Sean Loftis abuse, a Class 2 felony, according to Kane County court documents.

The documents indicate the alleged crimes happened Oct. 8 to Oct. 9 and involved someone Loftis knows who is younger than 18.

His bail was set at $100,000, and records show he was released on $10,000 bond.

As conditions of his bond, Loftis cannot have direct or indirect contact or communication with the victim, nor can he be within 150 feet of the victim’s residence, documents show.

The fire occurred at Eifeler Lafer Company, 3800 Commerce Drive, St. Charles.

According to its website, the company makes coatings for tools.

Firefighters were called to the company after a fire alarm went off at 4:15 a.m., according to a statement from St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet.

Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke in the manufacturing area of the building, prompting officials to upgrade the fire and seek mutual aid from Geneva, Batavia and West Chicago fire departments, according to the statement.

An activated sprinkler head kept the fire in check, and it took firefighters an additional half-hour to extinguish the rest of it, according to the statement.

The business was closed at the time, and there were no employees or occupants in the building, officials said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials said it was not considered suspicious.

• Changes in the appearance of the nipple: A nipple that appears diferent also may be a sign of breast cancer. Some women with breast cancer have noticed a nipple turned slightly inward or inverted prior to their breast cancer diagnosis.

Skin of the nipple, as well as that of the breast and areola, which is the dark circle of skin around the nipple, may also become red, scaly or swollen when breast cancer is present.

• Clear or bloody discharge from the nipple: Women who are breastfeeding often notice a milky discharge from their nipple ater breastfeeding. Such discharges

Any of the aforementioned signs and symptoms may be a sign of infection or the presence of a cyst, both of which are less severe than the presence of breast cancer. But the success rates of treating cancers that are detected early is such that any potential symptom of breast cancer warrants an immediate discussion with a physician.

LABELING FIGHT NOT WORTH ILLINOIS JOBS To the Editor: Early next year, a ruling from the World Trade Organization (WTO) could have devastating impacts on Illinois farmers and ag-related industries. A little-known but important disagreement between America and two of its major trading partners, Canada and Mexico, over food labeling poses great risk to Illinois’ economy if left unaddressed.

At play here are Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) requirements for food products imported into the United States. Enforced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, COOL requirements are targeted at making sure American consumers know where their groceries come from.

But Canada and Mexico have balked, claiming it’s unfair for the United States to require such labeling of imported foods. The WTO has largely agreed but won’t issue a final ruling until next year.

If the WTO finds that the U.S. is out of step with their standards, Mexico and Canada would be free to retaliate against us.

What would that mean for Illinois farmers? Bottom line: They would be hit hard.

Farms large and small could face significant hardship if tariffs were put on their exported goods such as corn, soybeans and pork.

Illinois farms mean Illinois jobs. The food and fiber industry here employs almost 1 million of the roughly 13 million residents of our state.

And our state and country have benefited greatly from a free and open trading partnership with our neighbors to the north and south. Illinois is expected to export nearly $8 billion of goods to Mexico alone this year.

But hundreds of millions of dollars in exports – and the livelihoods of farmers in DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, McHenry and Lake counties – could be in jeopardy if the ruling goes south for the United States.

Farmers in Illinois and across the country would face significant economic disruption to food production, agriculture and manufacturing industries.

That’s why in July, I joined more than 100 of my colleagues in Congress to urge U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to immediately rescind the COOL requirements if the WTO determines our policy violates international trade obligations until Congress finds a more permanent solution.

These consequences are frightening, but choosing between food labeling in the short term and economic devastation to our farmers in the long term is a no-brainer.

It’s up to the USDA to act now to stave off economic catastrophe to Illinois and the country.

Why Ebola is much scarier than it needs to be

By CASS R. SUNSTEIN Bloomberg News In 2012, more than 33,000 Americans died on the highways.

In some recent years, the flu has killed tens of thousands. Alcohol is associated with some 70,000 deaths annually, weight problems with more than 300,000, and smoking with more than 400,000.

Even a single one of these preventable deaths is a tragedy. But the risks they pose do not greatly trouble most people in their daily lives. What’s worrying many people much more these days is the far lower risk, at least in the United States and Europe, of contracting Ebola.

What, then, can public officials do to stem the public anxiety? The problem is that Ebola fear presents a delicate challenge – one that official assurances might just make worse, at least if they breed distrust.

In thinking about risks, people use something behavioral scientists call the “availability heuristic”: They believe that something is more probable if they can readily think of examples – as they can when something is in the news. This explains why earthquake insurance rises sharply after there’s just been an earthquake, but de-

clines as vivid memories recede.

The availability heuristic also helps explain why, in the three months after the Sept. 11 attacks, many people chose to drive rather than fly. And because driving is more dangerous, more than 300 Americans lost their lives as a result of that choice.

Behavioral science has uncovered a related point: When a risk triggers strong emotions, people often focus on terrible outcomes, and do not much consider the (low) probability that they will occur. Terrorists try to exploit this phenomenon by making people think they cannot be safe anywhere. An infectious disease can lead to overreaction for precisely the same reason.

Research on risk perception, undertaken by psychologist Paul Slovic and his colleagues, also has found that people especially fear risks that are new, unfamiliar, involuntarily incurred, potentially catastrophic and apparently uncontrollable.

That’s not so surprising, but the consequence is that people can be far more afraid of statistically small risks (those associated with pesticides, for instance) than of statistically larger ones (those associated with smoking or texting while driving). Some dangers trigger genuine dread,

and people will take extreme measures to avoid them, whether or not it makes a lot of sense to do so. Dread also is often subject to a harmful process of “social amplification” – the ripple effects caused by sustained media attention – thus producing burdens and costs that go far beyond the risks themselves.

There is also something distinctly primal about this particular threat, something that taps into nightmares that linger in the human psyche, and that have become familiar from popular movies and literature. (Are we in the midst of World War Z?) For those who seek to calm the public, it is necessary, of course, to ensure that the appropriate precautions are taken. It might even make sense to take measures beyond those warranted on strictly scientific grounds, in order to help people feel safer, and in full recognition of the serious social consequences if and when further cases of Ebola arise.

Norwegian transfer’s time short, sweet Thorbjornsen, Knights gear up for postseason play at Burlington Central Regional

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – It’s not every day a Norwegian student walks the halls of Kaneland High School, so it was inevitable that Carl Thorbjornsen would turn into a point of curiosity.

The 16-year-old sophomore has fielded countless questions about his native country, some better informed than others.

“Probably the dumbest question I’ve gotten so far is do they speak Norwegian in Norway,” Thorbjornsen said. “That’s probably the dumbest. But they ask a lot about Norway, like ‘Do you live on a rock in Norway? Does it snow the whole year?’ ” On the soccer field, Thorbjornsen answered any questions about his talent in a hurry, scoring three goals in his second match with the Knights, a win against Morris.

Good thing Thorbjornsen didn’t need much time to thaw his skill set. After moving to the area in early September to live with his father, Charles, a U.S. citizen, Thorbjornsen had to sit 30 days to gain IHSA eligibility. He’s only played in four matches for the Knights leading up to today’s IHSA Class 2A Burlington Central Regional semifinal against Sycamore.

Thorbjornsen visited the United States twice previously but never for an extended time. He said he’s enjoyed the chance to build a stronger relationship with his dad and credited his teammates and classmates at Kaneland for making him feel welcome.

“I think it’s cool that we have a high school soccer team because in Norway we don’t have a high school soccer team; and the high

school is much bigger than my school in Norway, and I think that’s cool,” Thorbjornsen said.

Back home in Nesodden, Norway, Thorbjornsen said he plays for a pair of soccer teams. He considers the level of play in Norway higher than here – noting more emphasis on dribbling skills and greater depth on teams – but, nonetheless, he’s been impressed by several players he’s encountered during his indoctrination to American high school soccer.

Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said it was “beneficial” for Thorbjornsen to sit out a month as he transitioned to life in the United States, though the Knights would have liked more time with the physical forward this season.

“It was a shame that he had to sit 30 days, but that’s IHSA rules,” Parillo said. “Even though he’s from Norway, they said he’s an American citizen so this is a transfer, and this is like transferring from another high school. So we sat there patiently. Every few days it was ‘When can I play, when can I play?’ … I think that was tough for him and tough for us because we saw that he’s got some great ability.”

While the three-goal outburst against Morris was a clear highlight, Parillo said Thorbjornsen has continued to make an impact since, creating several quality opportunities for his teammates.

Senior midfielder Ivan Bohorquez said it’s been fun to see Thorbjornsen deliver on the promise he displayed in practice before becoming eligible. Bohorquez said he was intrigued as soon as he found out a European transfer was in the mix.

International Crown lands title sponsor Underwriters Laboratories president and CEO Keith Williams shares a handful of characteristics with Rich Harvest Farms owner Jerry Rich.

Both are avid golfers who are based in suburban Chicago but always have an eye on what’s happening globally.

That connection helped the two sides click en route to the LPGA’s announcement Monday that UL will be the title sponsor of the eight-nation International Crown match play tournament descending on the Sugar Grove course in July 2016. UL, a science safety testing and certification company headquartered in Northbrook, also will sponsor the 2018 Crown, which is set to be played in Korea at a location and date to be announced.

“They’re a very, very good company,” Rich said, “and we’re very happy to have them on board.”

Spain won the inaugural Crown, held at Maryland’s Caves Valley, in July. A rankings system will determine the 2016 field of nations at the end of the 2015 LPGA season.

“We’ve been yelling at him and telling him he’s a liar,” Parillo said. “He says it’s not as cold in Norway right now

Thorbjornsen said this likely will be his last year at Kaneland. He’s dealt with natural homesickness, and his healthier, fish-intensive diet in Norway has been altered by junkier American fare.

“I miss my friends, my family, my mom, my sisters,” Thorbjornsen said. “And I also miss my soccer team and the guys.

And it’s not as strict there. We have less rules in Norway.”

Still, he considers the broadening experience of life in the U.S. to have been worthwhile.

Parillo feels the same way, even though tonight will be just Thorbjornsen’s fifth match with Kaneland. The Knights would love to let Thorbjornsen settle in for as long as possible this postseason.

“Hopefully, we go far enough to really let him showcase his skills,” Parillo said.

Cougars carry Series ties: The 110th World Series opens tonight in Kansas City, the one-time dream destination for prospects completing their first full minor league seasons with the Cougars.

Kane County forged a “KC” connection with the Kansas City Royals during a two-year player-development contract from 2011 to 2012, a span that included the Cougars career of Royals Game 2 starter Yordano Ventura. Ventura was 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 31 games

and 30 starts for the Royals during the regular season, three years after compiling a 4-6 record and 4.27 ERA in 19 starts with the Cougars.

Royals outfielder Josh Willingham played 97 games for the Cougars’ 2001 Midwest League championship club.

The team was a Florida (now Miami) Marlins affiliate then.

The Cougars were aligned with the Oakland A’s when San Francisco Giants closer Santiago Casilla pitched for them in 2003 and 2004. Casilla pitched for the Giants’ World Series winners in 2010 and 2012.

Both World Series managers were catchers in the MWL, with the Giants’ Bruce Bochy part of the 1976 Dubuque Packers and the Royals’ Ned Yost a member of the 1975 Wausau Mets. The Wausau franchise relocated to Geneva before the 1991 season to become the Cougars.

Even as Kaneland has fallen out of playoff contention – for the first time since 2007 and just the second season in the past 20 – his tune hasn’t changed.

That’s a mouthful, but Furrie closed her sophomore year in emboldening fashion, registering birdies on her final two holes Saturday en route to a 4-over-par round of 76 at the IHSA Class AA State Meet.

Furrie’s two-day total of 157 tied her for 13th place among the state field of 114 golfers at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.

“I’m definitely happy about that because last year I ended like 49th, so that was a big improvement, but to get to the top 10, I was two strokes away,” Furrie said. “That would have been really cool, but definitely happy with my position.”

Furrie shaved five strokes off her opening-round performance, an 81 with which she was displeased.

“At first I was really upset about it but I knew if I dwell on it too much it was not going to get better [Saturday],” Furrie said. “So I just kind of got over it and thought about which things I need to get better on and work on that, and then came out today.”

Furrie said she hit many more greens in regulation Saturday. She flirted with a holein-one on the par-3 8th hole but settled for converting a short birdie putt, and she added another birdie on No. 9, her final hole of the tournament.

“To end with two birdies, she stuck them both within three, four feet, there’s not a better way to close,” North coach Irish Whalen said.

Neuqua Valley junior Jessica Yuen shot a two-day 142, 2-under, to claim the individual championship.

As a team, North (136-over for the two days) landed in 11th place out of 12. Hinsdale Central (58-over) won the team title.

“Most people don’t realize how harmful it is to their teeth or realize how discomforting it is for them,” said Batavia Dentist Ronald Murphy.

According to Murphy, on a typical day, people put about 200 psi of pressure on their teeth. At night, grinders may put 2,000 psi of pressure on their teeth.

A simple exam from your dentist will likely reveal if you have clinching or grinding issues. Wear generally shows on the chewing surface of back teeth and back surface of front teeth.

“If you are putting that much pressure on your teeth, there is going to be wear,” Murphy said.

In addition to an exam,

Murphy said a conversation with a patient’s significant other can also reveal whether or not a person is grinding their teeth at night. Clinching most often occurs during the day, particularly when someone is focused on a task.

For someone who is grinding their teeth at night, Murphy will start with recommending a night guard.

However, he advises against store bought guards and recommends his patients are fitted for a personal guard.

Murphy has patients that wear the guard while they are sleeping, but also when they are in certain situations in which they might clinch – like driving in the city during rush hour.

“The more you grind and damage your teeth, the less function you’ll get out of your teeth, and you are more likely to lose teeth,” Murphy said.

Depending on the severity of the damage, it can generally be fixed with anything from fillings to veneers.

ELGIN – The St. Charles East boys cross country team, with help from its freshman-sophomore squad, retained the Upstate Eight Conference River title at Saturday’s conference meet at Lords Park.

Applying lessons learned from the frosh-soph race helped the Saints edge Batavia for the top spot. East came in first with 39 points, followed by the Bulldogs with 46 points. Geneva’s 71 points earned the Vikings third place while St. Charles North took fourth with a score of 92.

“I think we learned a lot from our frosh-soph race. The guys went out too fast, kind of faded,” East coach Chris Bosworth said. “We told the varsity team to go out just a little bit slower for that first mile and then when you hit that, start to build. That’s what we did and we finished strong.”

Bosworth also credited the return of Michael Gerkin (16th place, 16:08.8), who was injured

earlier in the season, with putting East on top.

Although Geneva finished third, coach Bob Thomson was pleased with his team’s showing.

“We pretty much knew that Batavia and St. Charles East would be battling for it and on the varsity side we’d been losing to St. Charles North all season long but we have been close a couple of times,” Thomson said.

Batavia’s Ryan Wieties came in first among River runners and seventh overall with a time of 15:18.7.

“I was leading the first mile but personally I think I started out a little too fast,” Wieties said. “I think I could of run a more even race but given the circumstances and the course, it’s not exactly the flattest, I think I was able to close it pretty well.”

Rounding out the top five River Division runners were Mark Sciurba of East (15:21.6), Mitchael Demantopulos from Geneva (15:25.9) and Jack Rez-

pecki (15:39.9) and Mike Skora (15:40.5), both from East.

Batavia edged Geneva by two points to take the girls River title. The Bulldogs scored 50 points to the Vikings’ 52. East came in third with 74 points and North took fifth, tallying 122.

“Our fifth was in front of their [Geneva’s] fourth and even our sixth and seventh weren’t too far behind their top five so our depth really paid off.

They really beat us up front,” Batavia coach Chad Hillman said.

St. Charles North’s Audrey Ernst was the overall and River Division winner of the girls race. The freshman’s time of 17:31.1 edged Streamwood’s Gabby Juarez by 6 tenths of a second. Ernst, Juarez, Batavia’s Dakota Roman and East’s Torree Scull ran close together the first two miles.

Roman finished sixth (18:10.3) while Scull took fourth place (17:55.9). Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer came in third (17:35.8) and teammate Emma Ehrhardt finished fifth (18:02.4).

What a bargain! Often an authentic antique sells for less than a modern copy. Since the price of antique wooden (“brown”) furniture has dropped in the last few years, the good news is that there are many bargains for a buyer looking for an older style. Fewer home sales mean fewer furnishings sales, and the prices of antiques have suffered. Few Americans grew up with a 19th-century inlaid secretary from Holland in the house. Dutch designs were elaborate, with curved legs, domed cornices, mirrored door fronts, even a slant-front opening covered by a flip top that served as a desk. And of course there were drawers, candle slides and cubby holes. It is the perfect piece for a period room or as an accent piece in a simple modern room. And the drawers furnish good storage space. A new reproduction piece like this would have plain, not inlaid, surfaces and probably straighter legs and less trim. A top-quality copy would cost about $5,000. At a 2014 auction, a 7-foot-high secretary desk that could easily be moved into a modern room with the usual 8-foot ceiling sold for $2,214 at New Orleans Auction Galleries. More good news, an antique has a better chance than a copy to go up in value.

ADVICE Verbal abuse at day care cries out for intervention Dear Abby: I would like to weigh in on your response to “Day Care Drama in Indiana” (Sept. 1), whose neighbor screams at the children in her day care. I worked for 25 years investigating serious complaints, many involving verbal abuse, against day care providers for my state’s licensing agency. It is critical for this reader to contact Indiana’s licensing agency and make a complaint.

Verbal abuse is extremely damaging to young children.

If your reader were to approach the children’s parents individually as you advised, they would likely discount him/her as a “cranky neighbor.” However, if the licensing investigator were to pay a visit and interview the older past and present children, as we do in our state, the provider would be cited – or closed down – and the findings could be presented to the parents by an objective party. – Retired But Concerned Dear Retired But Concerned:

Hyperparathyroidism should be regularly monitored Dear Doctor K: A recent blood test showed that the calcium level in my blood is high. My levels of something called “PTH” are also high. Now my doctor has scheduled a parathyroid scan. Why? What does calcium have to do with the parathyroid?

Dear Reader: You have four parathyroid glands. These peasized glands sit on your thyroid gland, in the lower part of your neck. (I’ve put an illustration of the parathyroid glands on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

A hormone is a chemical made in one organ that enters the blood, travels throughout the body and affects how different parts of the body work. The parathyroid glands produce the parathyroid hormone (PTH).

The job of the parathyroid glands is to adjust their production of PTH to keep calcium levels in your blood within a normal range. If the calcium level in your blood starts to drop, the parathyroid glands make more PTH. If calcium levels rise, the glands make less hormone.

How does PTH influence calcium levels? In three different ways. Lots of calcium is stored in your bones. PTH causes the bones to release calcium into the blood.

Finally, PTH signals the kidneys to withhold calcium from the urine.

Hyperparathyroidism (hiper-par-a-THIGH-royd-izm) occurs when one (or more) of the parathyroid glands becomes overactive and makes more PTH than it should. Excess hormone is released into the bloodstream. The result is abnormally high levels of calcium and PTH in the blood.

If your hyperparathyroidism is mild, you might not need treatment. But you should have regular blood tests to measure your blood calcium level and make sure it’s not going higher. You will also need periodic bone density tests because PTH causes calcium to leak out of bones, which causes them to thin.

More severe hyperparathyroidism can cause bone pain and thin, brittle bones that are more easily fractured. Elevated levels of PTH and calcium can also trigger the formation of kidney stones and

cause kidney damage, dehydration and confusion.

The reason your doctor has ordered an imaging scan is to check for an enlarged parathyroid gland or a parathyroid tumor. Parathyroid cancer is extremely rare. A doctor may never see a single case despite practicing medicine for decades. I never have.

If your condition is severe enough, you may need surgery to remove the affected parathyroid gland(s). If it’s less severe, your doctor may prescribe medication.

Drugs used to treat hyperparathyroidism include hormone replacement therapy and bisphosphonates, both of which help bones retain calcium. Another type of drug mimics calcium in the body, in order to trick the parathyroid gland into releasing less PTH. Fortunately, many people with hyperparathyroidism have a mild condition that never becomes serious enough to require treatment.

But it does require regular repeat testing to be sure it’s not getting worse.

We gave our son a puppy as a companion for the times he was home alone after school.

He started training him when he was about a year old. One evening he said, “Look what Buddy can do.” He then said, “Buddy, go get Mom’s slippers.”

He immediately ran upstairs to our bedroom and came down with her slippers, one after the other.

Then my wife called to him, “Buddy, they’re in the bathroom.” We could hear him run to the bathroom, and down he came with the shoes.

Then once I couldn’t find one of my slippers and thought my son had misplaced it. He said he hadn’t seen it so he asked Buddy where it was. Buddy got up, went behind our sofa and came out with the slipper. He must have taken it there.

The doorbell rang during dinner one time.

It was the paperboy collecting for the paper. At that time it cost just $1 per week, so I gave the dollar to Buddy and told him to give it to the boy.

The paperboy was a bit reluctant to accept it from Buddy, but Buddy allowed him to take it from him.

Our daughter played the organ and practiced at the church half a block from our home,

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace but she needed the keys to the church to get in.

She called from her cellphone to say she forgot her keys, so I gave the keys to Buddy and told him to take them to Erin at the church.

He obeyed quickly and then came right back home.

We were preparing our trailer for a camping trip and Buddy was very nervous because he didn’t know if he would get to go along.

I said to him, “Do you want to go camping with us?” He started yipping and spinning in circles. I said, “OK, go and get your dish and put it in the car.” He ran down to the basement, got his dish and put it in the car.

All of the commands to Buddy were verbal only; there were no other signs or instructions.

I could give you many other stories about him. Now you know that our dog Buddy DID understand the English language! – Joe, Kalamazoo, Michigan Dear Joe: I retract my statement that dogs can’t understand human conversation.

Since I wrote that column, I’ve received a number of letters from readers claiming that their pooches could understand human conversation, but your tale about the remarkable Buddy has made me change my mind.

Is it obvious to do the ‘obvious’?

Alfred North Whitehead, an English mathematician and philosopher who died in 1947, said, “It requires a very unusual mind to make an analysis of the obvious.”

If that is true, bridge players need unusual minds because sometimes the obvious is wrong and the unobvious is correct. And deals in which that is true are among the hardest to get right.

In this example, South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest heart six. What should declarer do after taking East’s 10 with his jack?

The auction is straightforward.

Remember, responder does not show his five-card minor with game-going values and no singleton. It is so unlikely that five of the minor will make and three no-trump fail.

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, one heart (the first trick), three diamonds and one club. It looks so obvious to bash out those top diamonds. Surely the jack will drop. And if it doesn’t, perhaps West has jackfourth and can be given a trick, leaving the heart king safe from attack.

Finally, if East has jack-fourth of diamonds, then maybe the club finesse will work. All very easy – but the contract fails here if East has the diamond jack. East will gain the lead in one of the minors and return his last heart.

Instead, declarer should be willing to guarantee four diamond tricks while making sure that East never gains the lead.

At trick two, South should play a diamond to dummy’s ace, then he should lead a diamond to his 10. If the finesse loses, the contract is safe. If the finesse wins and West follows suit both times, declarer will rake in at least one overtrick.
