St. Charles East presents ‘Macbeth’ If you go

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – For his lead role in “Macbeth,” St. Charles East High School senior Hunter Fredrickson not only had to memorize lines.

He also had to learn how to wield a sword for the scenes with sword fights, he said.

The 17-year-old will brandish the 2-pound steel, dullblade prop as Macbeth during performances set for Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the Norris Cultural Arts Center on the school’s campus, 1020 Dunham Road, St. Charles.

The East students have been preparing for the fall play for months. Erin Newman, a 16-year-old junior who plays Lady Macbeth, said the rehearsal schedule included a few summer sessions, every day since the beginning of the school year and weekends.

“It’s very strenuous,” she said.

This is the first Shakespearean play for both teens, they said. Although the language took some getting used to, they said, the audience should be able to understand the story.

The teens appreciated the flexibility to apply different interpretations to Shakespeare’s words, they said.

“Everything’s a meta-

phor,” Newman said.

While Newman and Fredrickson have one role to learn, junior Leah Bieniak has to know much more as stage manager. The 17-year-old – who also is acting in the play – said the stage manager has various tasks, such as writing notes about blocking, helping the cast focus, organizing the sets and props, and assisting

with costume changes during the show.

“We have to know the whole show,” she said.

The other cast members are Zaina Abdin, James Bundy, Clark Cheatham, Chrissy Chlepecka, Lindsay Drozdik, Chloe Fanning, Morgan Fanning, Lauren Freas, Cody Hedera, Dawson Hubbs, Casey Iwanski, Brooke Lynch, Beth Mehl, Ava Nunes, Brandon Pearson, Joe Petersen, Alex Saviano, Caroline Skoog, Suzy Tokarski, Mara Vavaroutsos and Jack Wartman.

St. Charles OKs video gaming in split vote

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Minutes after the St. Charles City Council on Monday narrowly voted to allow video gaming, a resident warned the six who supported the measure that they won’t easily be re-elected.

“We’ll work our darnedest to make sure you’re replaced,” Robert Brown said.

“You were blinded by what this community wants. … We want to be pride of the fox.

We don’t want to be video gamblers.”

Mayor Ray Rogina listed other debated subjects in the city, such as placing a homeless shelter downtown, rejecting a housing development on the old St. Charles Mall site and proceeding with Red Gate Bridge. With each one, he asked whether the city’s

image was tarnished.

“As to the assumption of the impact of this [video gaming] decision on the town’s image, I have been blunt in my response that this town’s image cannot be tarnished,” Rogina said, reading from a prepared statement he provided to reporters.

He and aldermen Todd Bancroft, Ed Bessner, Dan Stellato, Art Lemke and Bill Turner voted in favor of al-

lowing video gaming with caveats addressing the state’s fiscal situation. For example, the ordinance won’t go into effect until the state passes a budget this fiscal year.

Illinois is operating without a state budget, which was due July 1.

Art exhibition at Batavia library

I know what you’re thinking. Because, I thought it myself. I figured I could just put off this whole retirement thing for another year or maybe two. Then it hit me. All the things I will need to do to prepare for the big Kay Johnson decision and move – like sorting, packing and selling a home; I’ll still have to do. Only when that time comes, I’ll be another year or two older. Let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger. I looked at other places around Elburn but none of them felt like home. Then I came out to Oak Crest. I toured the grounds, visited with the staff, compared prices and amenities and just knew. Oak Crest was more than just a place to retire, it would be my home. The day I moved in I said, “I wouldn’t have wanted to wait even one more day.” I am so glad that I didn’t put off until tomorrow, what I could do today.

B

efore the music starts, Batavia High School junior Linnea Johnson is thinking about a couple of things.

Thoughts include making sure her feet are in time, keeping her shoulders square, an upward horn angle and playing with dynamics and articulation.

“Each set is a new chance to do something better,” said Johnson, 16.

Johnson is one of the 120 members of the Batavia High School Marching Band.

In recent years, Batavia and other schools have risen to the challenge of creating elaborate productions with props and choreography.

The bands’ showmanship has been on display every Friday during home football games.

Chris Owen, Batavia’s marching director, said he has seen several changes in marching band performances since he was in high school in the late 1990s.

“The amount of change that has happened in the activity is massive,” Owen said.

In the 1990s, a typical marching band would have 20 different sets, “or pictures,” said Aaron Puckett, director of the 115-member Kaneland High School marching band. The school’s competitive show has close to 80 pictures it has to make during the show.

Both Batavia and Kaneland work with someone outside of the school to help them write the bands’ complicated sets.

Batavia students have to commit to joining the marching band and all of its performances by March of the previous school year, Owen said.

To prepare for the fall performances, schools typically hold a band camp, followed by after-school rehearsals.

Senior Todd Martin first made the decision to join Batavia’s marching band as a freshman based on his interest in music and seeking out more friends. His eighth-grade graduating class at the Batavia Montessori Academy had seven students.

Martin, who plays center snare, said he has become close friends with those in and out of his section.

“I really like the musical challenge that marching band has given me,” Martin, 17, said.

The freshmen band members end up becoming mentored by the upperclassmen, said Jim Kull, St. Charles East band director.

Even with middle-school band experience, practice is crucial for the incoming freshmen to get down all the marching and playing they have to do as marching band members, Kull said.

A willingness to practice and a positive attitude are the most important things to keep in mind, said Samantha Reattoir, a Geneva High School color guard captain.

Reattoir said memorization skills also are crucial for color guard members because they cannot use “cheat sheets” once out on the field.

For all the work and commitment marching band takes, marching bands do not hesitate to recommend incoming freshmen to join their ranks.

“It was overall one of the best decisions I made in high school,” Johnson said.

were made up of family members, friends and supporters of the two women.

“I love that they remember [Clawson] this way and help with such a bittersweet thing,” Brown said.

Rosenberg agreed, saying she has a glad heart and a sad heart each year during the walk.

Anyone in an abusive relationship or bad situation should call a place like Mutual Ground, Rosenberg said.

“There are shelters, counselors out there,” Rosenberg said. “The hardest thing to do is walk away. The easiest thing to do is make a phone call. Talk to somebody, anybody. Don’t carry that burden alone.”

GENEVA – Chilly morning weather did not keep Felix and Kendra Coronado from walking Saturday on the Fox River Trail with their dog, Riley.

“It got warmer on the walk – the weather was great,” said Felix Coronado, an Aurora resident.

The Coronados were among the more than 300 people who participated in the eighth annual Walk for Hope at the Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva.

The event also included a children’s play area, massages and live music by musician Chuck Torpe.

It is the largest fundraiser for Mutual Ground, an Aurora-based domestic and sexual violence services agency for people in Kendall and southern Kane counties.

The walk raised more than $80,000 as of Monday morning, and people are still able to donate by logging onto www.firstgiving.com/ Event/Donation/38250, Mutual Ground Executive Director Michelle Meyer said.

“You all are the reason that Mutual Ground will continue to operate while the state of Illinois figures out how to operate,” Meyer said during the event’s opening ceremonies.

Mutual Ground serves more than 1,500 people annually in domestic abuse and sexual violence cases, Meyer said. About 400 of them are children, she said.

“Unfortunately, domestic violence is a real thing, and it’s a scourge, but we have people that are willing to help, and that’s what we need,” Kane County Sheriff Don Kramer said to the crowd.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke and Chuck Nelson, assistant chief of staff for Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner, also addressed the participants.

Before the walk started, Meyer read aloud the names of several people who lost their lives to domestic violence and asked for a moment of silence.

The list included Kathleen King, Andrea Will, Kari Clawson and more.

North Aurora man charged with assault, having stolen gun NORTH AURORA – A North Aurora man is facing multiple charges after he pointed a stolen gun at a family member Saturday morning, according to a North Aurora police news release.

Francis P. Perez, 37, of the 200 block of East Arrowhead Street, North Aurora, was charged with unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm without a firearm owners identification card, both Class 3 felonies, the news release stated.

Perez also was charged with possession of firearm ammunition without a valid FOID card and aggravated assault, a Class A misdemeanor, according to the news release.

North Aurora police officers at 7:14 a.m. Saturday were dispatched to Perez’s home for a report of a person with a weapon.

Officers found members of the Perez family outside of the home with Perez still inside, armed with a rifle, the release states.

Before one of the family members left the home, Pe-

rez pointed the rifle at him or her, according to the release.

The officers, eventually joined by Francis P. Aurora Police Perez Department officers, set up a perimeter around the house and began to evacuate adjacent homes, the release stated.

Perez, about 7:42 a.m., voluntarily came out of the home unarmed and was taken into custody without further incident, according the release.

The perimeter was taken down four minutes after Perez came outside.

Officers recovered a .223 caliber semi-automatic rifle and ammunition from the residence. A check of the rifle through the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System, or LEADS, determined the rifle was reported stolen from Oglesby, Illinois, the release stated.

Perez attended a weekend hearing where his bond was set at $75,000 – with 10 percent, or $7,500 – required to be released pending trial.

The incident remains under investigation.

BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council on Monday approved two agreements and a liquor license for an upcoming business in downtown Batavia.

Batavia aldermen at their regular meeting voted 12-1 in favor of two Tax Increment Finance, or TIF, redevelopment agreements and 13-0 in favor of a liquor license for Bar Evolution.

Fifth ward Alderman Kevin Botterman voted against the redevelopment agreements but voted in favor of the liquor license.

First Ward Alderman Carl Fischer was absent from the meeting.

The bar will be at 27 N. River St. in Batavia – the former Batavia O’ Sole Mio location – and be an intimate space where patrons can enjoy wine, martinis and other

drinks, owner John Hamel said.

One of the agreements is for a $25,000 grant and a $25,000 low-interest loan.

The other agreement is for another $25,000 grant to assist with the cost of installing double-paned, bi-fold windows at the business.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien and seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown expressed their support for Hamel’s business contributions to River Street.

“When we were in the throes of designing Riv er Street, this is exactly what we were looking for,” O’Brien said.

Hamel also is the co-owner of the West Chicago and Batavia Pal Joey’s locations.

He thanked the aldermen for their support.

After the meeting, Hamel said he plans to open Bar Evolution in December or January.

Group to host meeting on services for mentally ill

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Fox River Valley Initiatives will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Congregational Church of Batavia, 21 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia, to address mental health programs and affordable housing in Kane County.

According to a news release, the organization seeks support from Kane County to fund a pilot program to help people with mental health issues get assistance to manage their illness, successfully re-enter the community and avoid returning to jail.

The program would provide pre- and post-release counseling and support for inmates diagnosed with a mental illness to help them have access to insurance, behavioral and mental health services and social services, according to the release.

Counseling would be provided by the Association for Individual Development and Ecker Center for Mental Health, according to the release.

The organization is working with Kane County Board leadership on a funding package in the new fiscal year, the release stated.

Fox River Valley Initiatives’ member organizations include Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles, Congregational Church in Batavia and the United Methodist Church of Geneva, and the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva.

Other member organizations include Lazarus House in St. Charles, Hesed House in Aurora, Ecker Center, the Illinois Education Association and National Alliance for the Mentally Ill – Kane, DeKalb and Kendall counties, according to the release.

Alice and John began their life together on the family dairy farm in the Elburn area, and joined in the rigors of farming for 34 years. She worked for 26 years for Illinois Bell as a switch board operator and clerk, where she made many life- long friends. She was an active member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, member and former secretary of The La Fox Farmer’s Club, avid card player belonging to many area card playing clubs, and also volunteered with the Batavia Senior Center where she would sew and crochet items for the members.

After the loss of her husband she found a love for travel, enjoying many trips to Florida with her close knit gang of gal pals and visiting places all over the world.

Holidays were always her favorite times of the year to be able to have her entire family close together. Her connection to her family is forever, a family grateful for her life and the moments they shared.

She is survived by her beloved children, Janet Benson and Karen Benson; and beloved life long friend of the family, Jurate Pezze; sister-in-law, Nancy Sporleder; and numerous nieces and nephews most notably, Steven (Sonja) Sporleder.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, John, four brothers and two sisters.

A memorial visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until time of memorial service at 10:30 a.m.

City OKs $700K for design to upgrade wastewater plant

The improvements are necessary in order to meet required phosphorus discharge limits to the Fox River, officials said. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit for the Geneva plan requires it to meet the limit of 1.0 milligram per liter annual phosphorus limit by July 2019.

Second Ward Alderman Richard Marks and 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian both voted “no.” Fourth Ward Alderman Ron Singer and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra were absent.

Marks also cast the lone “no” vote at Committee of the Whole last week because it was not competitively bid.

Simonian said he changed his

mind and also voted “no.”

“I got a second thought that it was too big a line item – $700,000,” Simonian said. “I thought more about what Alderman Marks had to say and reconsidered and thought it was something we should at least go to bid with.”

“I still believe it’s a good deal,” Simonian said. “We got a very good deal. Timeliness, I know, is imperative here. …

But I concur with [Marks] it should have went to bid.”

Public Works Director Richard Babica had said at committee last week the company is well-versed in Geneva’s wastewater design and going out to bid would delay the $8 million project to upgrade the treatment plant by three to four months.

Babica had said it was important to keep to its schedule to get good construction bids, as other communities will be looking to upgrade their wastewater plants to meet the new requirements, and Geneva would be competing with them for contractors.

America’s shrinking domain

By FRED HIATT The Washington Post In many ways, and contrary to whatever Donald Trump may say, the next president will inherit an America in better shape – better positioned for world leadership – than the nation that George W. Bush bequeathed to Barack Obama.

So why doesn’t it feel that way?

Why does it feel as if we’re losing?

In 2008, when the U.S. economy was on the verge of implosion, so was the standing of the U.S. as a model for the world.

Remember the “BRICs”? Pundits proclaimed the rise of Brazil, Russia, India and China. The latter especially was ascendant. Democracy seemed to have led the West down the drain, while the authoritarian Communists in Beijing were building fast trains and creating good jobs. The United States was in no position to tell them or anyone else what to do.

Today, that conventional wisdom doesn’t seem so wise. India has a reform government, but the magnitude of its task is clearer than ever. Brazil is stagnating; Russia is going backward; China is slowing. Europe is focused inward, threatened by weak links, such as Greece, and terrified of an immigrant tide.

“Right now,” Obama said on CBS’s “60 Minutes” a week ago, “our economy is much stronger relative to the rest of the world.

China, Europe, emerging markets, they’re all having problems.”

Longer-term trends, especially demographic, favor the United States, too. Five of the 10 most populous nations in 1950 were from the “First World.” Of those, only the United States will remain on the list a century later, thanks in large part to immigration.

And yet, if the United States is the leader of the free world, its domain after two Obama terms is shrinking. According to Freedom House, global freedom has declined every year that Obama has been in office. The number of countries ranked “Not Free” has risen from

42 in 2008 to 51.

China, tightening the screws at home, is pushing U.S. allies around in East Asia and the South China Sea with expansive territorial claims and new naval outposts.

Russia, also more repressive internally, has dismembered the Western-leaning Ukraine, dismissing U.S. protests.

When CBS’s Steve Kroft asked Obama in that same interview whether the world is safer than when he took office, the president didn’t try to make the case. “America is a safer place” was the most he would venture, and it’s not clear his own security team would agree.

What explains this apparent contradiction? If what Marxist-Leninists might have called the correlation of forces is increasingly in U.S. favor, why does actual U.S. influence seem to be waning in so much of the world?

One possible answer, I suppose, is lag time: Having drawn certain conclusions as the Great Recession set in, the world needs time to recalibrate to changed conditions.

More likely, the advantages are real but not self-actualizing. That is – the United States’ economic, demographic and other strengths provide an opportunity to exercise leadership. But it is an opportunity that has to be seized, something Obama has shied away from.

There’s a more alarming possibility, too: that not just Obama’s predilections but something in the body politic will keep the nation from capitalizing on its strengths.

We will have a new president in a year and a few months, but that by no means guarantees an end to dysfunction in Washington.

Hyperpartisanship, a waning of empathy, a turning inward – I don’t think those are America’s most probable direction, but in this odd election year, it’s hard to rule them out. If they took hold, the nation’s strategic advantages wouldn’t matter – and wouldn’t last.

Postseason brings about renewed intensity with ‘one and done’ mindset

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – For seniors like Luke Laurich and Nathan Carey, the next loss will be their final match as a Batavia Bulldog.

While everyone in Bulldog red well, actually all white uniforms in their Class 3A Waubonsie Valley Regional opener against Marmion tonight hopes that the final game will be a win at Hoffman Estates in the state tournament in early November, that only happens for a select few.

The Postseason, with its one, and, done format, brings about a renewed sense of urgency. Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco expects that for his seniors, who got to experience a run to a sectional championship game last season, the intensity will come and remain on the field for a full 80 minutes.

“I think playing that consistent game, start to finish, is what’s important in the playoffs,” Gianfrancesco said.

“You can get the early goal, which always helps, but these are long games. It’s not over once you get the first goal.

But any senior doesn’t want to hear the whistle sound for the final time, so you get up for these games and take that sense of urgency to another level come playoff time.”

Gianfrancesco said he only believes he’s taken on Marmion one time in his 17-year tenure at Batavia, but expects the postseason atmosphere to bring out the best in both teams.

It hasn’t been easy for Batavia, which finished Upstate Eight Conference River Division play at 1-2-3, but its regular season ended with a positive feeling after a 1-1 draw with Geneva.

Contrasting styles: Tonight’s match between the Bulldogs and Cadets features two very different teams.

Gianfrancesco and Batavia like their ability to get behind the Marmion defense, which has recently played a high line. With a forward like Davis DiBiase and Laurich and Carey, as well as Matt Allen contributing on both sides of the ball from their midfield positions, the Bulldogs will look to play through and over-thetop balls to use its speed and

athleticism.

Marmion, on the other hand, comes in with size and strength being its strong suit.

Joe Duffield anchors the defense, while junior forwards Sean Miller and Nick Grant are the go-to options up top.

“We know they like to play a high line, so it’ll be about connecting and executing for us,” Gianfrancesco said. “We’ve had trouble finishing at times this season. Our problem has

Burlington Central (11-10-1) may have had some ups and downs during its season, but one thing that can go a long way in the postseason is having a standout player. Sophomore Jack Schramme has burst onto the scene this year and could carry the Rockets to a regional title and beyond.

BC has its hands full, with an opening round game with Hampshire, followed by a potential meeting with Kaneland for the regional final, but don’t sleep on Schramme and BC just yet.

Wasn’t it just two months ago that rekindled talk of two-a-days and concussion safety protocol ushered in a new season?

With Week 9 now upon us in the usual flash, the discussion centers on postseason eligibility and playoff points. The IHSA will host its annual pairings show Saturday night, beginning in earnest the “second season” teams strive for each August.

Among Kane County Chronicle-area teams, Batavia and Geneva, both 7-1, have clinched playoff berths, along with St. Charles North (6-2). Kaneland (5-3) became playoff eligible with its Week 8 win against LaSalle-Peru, and can assure itself of a spot with a win at Rochelle this week.

St. Francis (4-4) must defeat visiting Fenwick in the regular-season finale to get to five wins and become playoff eligible. The Friars (3-5) are out of playoff contention after losses in weeks 7 and 8, and have allowed 247 points, most in the five-team Chicago Catholic Green.

“This is going to show a lot about our kids and how much pride we have,” Spartans coach Mike Fitzgerald said. “I love these guys and I’m going to enjoy

the week with them, and you never know what’s going to happen.”

Bulldog bites

Catching up with Batavia, which earned at least a share of its fifth consecutive Upstate Eight Conference River Division title with Friday’s 24-14 grudge match victory against Geneva at Burgess Field: • Someone in the IHSA scheduling department must have a sense of history.

The Bulldogs, in search of their 31st consecutive UEC River win, are set to close the regular season at Streamwood this week. Batavia’s current conference run began at the Sabres’ Millennium Field on Oct. 23, 2010, which is exactly five years before Week 9 of the 2015 season.

• The familiar senior night accoutrements accompanied Batavia’s regularseason home finale, a Week 7 romp against Elgin. Given another gaudy record and the aforementioned conference success, players figure they’ll be back at Bulldogs Stadium a time or two during the postseason.

Fine by them.

“We have a great turnout every game,” junior offensive lineman Jackson Lambert said. “Our fans are great. All of our

parents come out. They’re dedicated to us. We have a great town.”

• Despite surrendering a pair of long scoring plays, the Batavia defense clamped down on the Vikings elsewhere during the game, helping preserve the lead even when things got interesting down the stretch.

“I think we played a whole game all the way through,” senior linebacker Sean Callahan said. “I think everyone played a part in that game, and it’s a beautiful thing to see come together.”

Batavia has allowed 14 points in the past two weeks after St. Charles North (28) and Naperville North (34) had success in weeks 5 and 6.

The Bulldogs channeled the electric atmosphere in Geneva during their most recent effort.

“Every time playing here is just amazing,” senior linebacker Zack Majka said. “It’s my last time playing here, and it’s super emotional. It’s my last time playing Geneva, ever. So I’m just glad we could end on a good streak. It just means the world to us.”

If the Knights beat Rochelle on Friday, they will be back in the playoffs after missing out on the postseason last year. With a loss, it will come down to playoff points, which coach Tom Fedderly would like to avoid. It’s a little more complicated for St. Francis, the Spartans look to just be in the points conversation with a win over Fenwick Friday to give them that playoff eligibility.

ST. CHARLES – One of the main differences in tennis between singles and doubles is in the singles game, long rallies are much more common.

This was the case Saturday at the St. Charles East Sectional, as Elgin freshman Marta Krakowski made tedious work of Geneva junior Grace Krueger to win the singles championship.

“The singles game is a lot more counterpunching and slower-developing,” St. Charles North coach Sean Masoncup said. “Most of the points will go very quickly, but they are long. I think that has a lot to do with it, but the pace of the doubles is really where it gets going.”

Masoncup and North know a thing or two about doubles.

The North Stars earned the sectional title behind two entries who’ll compete in the IHSA state tournament Thursday at various District 211, 214 and 220 courts.

For the record, the North duo of Emma Spellman and Shelby Thomas defeated team-

third (singles) because [recent graduate Kirby Einck] usually played for first,” Krueger said. “I just want to do better than I did last year and freshman year” at state.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE NORMAL – Kaneland freshman Will Marshall had plenty of reasons and opportunities to tout the end of a breakthrough boys golf season on Saturday.

A final-round, 1-over par 72 at Illinois State’s Weibring Golf Club helped Marshall to a two-day 147 at the IHSA Class 2A state tournament. That was good enough for fourth place overall, seven shots behind champion Drew Miles, a senior from North Shore Country Day. Accolades aside, Marshall calmly and routinely credited the presence of his coaches, Mark Meyer and assistant Ken Neahring, as well as junior teammate Brett Glennon, who tied for 57th with a 169.

“It is nice to be a freshman and be able to go to state like this, but I can’t take all the credit for it,” Marshall said.

“The coaches really fixed a lot of my game, and being around the varsity players really finetuned me for the competition level.”

Senior Jonathan Nocek, whose two-day 150 tied for seventh individually, is a veteran of all three state trips alongside classmate Connor Buckley (173). Sophomore Luke Armbrust, who followed Nocek with a 154, competed with the 2014 team.

“We’ve had a lot of experience coming into the week,” Spartans coach Greg Bare-

sel said. “They know the golf course, they’ve played summer tournaments down here.

I think that really pays off. The teams that have been down here before really do well, and I think that made a big difference.”

Marshall credited calmness for helping him prevail. Entering the day tied for seventh overall, he seized the urgency after playing the front nine at 2-over par. Three consecutive birdies followed, and then a fourth on the fifth hole of the back side.

“It really hit me, you know: ‘I’m only 2-over, but 2-over’s not going to get it done,’ “ Marshall said. “I started making lot more putts. I was leaving myself less feet on the approach shots. I couldn’t stop there, so I started making the putts.”

Marshall said he benefited from a “fade-friendly” course that helped him guide approach shots. A double bogey on No. 16 cooled his momentum, as he played the final three holes at 3-over.

In the Class 3A meet at The Den at Fox Creek in adjacent Bloomington, Geneva placed 12th in the program’s first state trip as a team since 1989.

The Vikings finished with a two-day 686; champion Hinsdale Central fired a 621.

Andrew Abel (163), Tyler Isenhart (169), Jack McDonald (178) and Hudson Traylor (180) were the team’s aggregate top scorers. Only senior J.T. Kruzich will graduate from the 2015 state team.

Edwardsville’s Justin Hemings was an individual medalist with a 1-over par 145 for 36 holes.

St. Charles East sophomore Danny Buetow tied for 39th with a 161. Marmion junior Nick Huggins shot 166, tying for 60th.

In 1A competition at Prairie Vista in Bloomington, Aurora Christian junior Devin Johnson, a Geneva resident, tied for 15th with a 162. That score was 13 strokes behind St. Edward senior Michael Mattas, the individual medalist.

Get this: The North Stars already have designs on improving on this season’s fourth-place finish in Class AA next fall.

“I’m really proud of this team. We played really well,” freshman Megan Furtney said. “I think we’re just ready to come back next year and play even better.”

Furtney finished fifth individually with a 3-over par 147, closing her debut season with a 1-over 73. Her round featured three birdies – including separate ones on the first two holes – as she finished three shots behind champion Madasyn Pettersen, a sophomore from Rockford Guilford.

Megan Furtney St. Charles North girls golf was seven shots behind thirdplace Wheaton Warrenville South and 30 off the pace of champion Hinsdale Central.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls either way because of what they did and what they accomplished this season,” North coach Irish Whalen said.

North entered the final leg of the state series on a tear, having earned its first team sectional title on the heels of

a repeat regional title performance at Sycamore Golf Club.

Junior Kate Lillie (161) followed Furtney, who was flanked all season by fellow freshmen Emma Hayes (172) and Sarah Arnold (174).

The North Stars placed 11th at state in 2014, but are optimistic about a continued climb thanks to the infusion of youth to join Lillie and classmate Gianna Furrie. Furtney, the sectional medalist, led the effort down the stretch.

“I’m pretty proud of how I played,” Furtney said. “Obviously, I would have liked to have won the tournament, but I played my game. I was pretty proud of how I hit the ball and what I scored.”

It was especially gratifying considered what Whalen called a “two-club wind” that challenged the field throughout the weekend.

St. Charles East placed

ninth, shooting a 350 on Saturday to finish with a two-day 697.

Although the Saints hoped to improve upon their seventh-place standing entering the final round, there’s a silver lining in that each of the program’s state scorers will return next season.

Seniors Brooke Brotzman and Karina Shah also were part of East’s state team.

Paul Jennison has probably moved on from the girls season, with his focus solely on taking the boys team as deep into the playoffs as possible.

But a foe in Conant awaits in a first round matchup tonight at Conant.

A coach named Jason Franco awaits Jennison on the opposing bench, and one would recall that Franco got the better of Jennison and the East girls soccer team in a sectional semifinal game at Schaumburg High School last spring.

The Saints did not lose a match in their final 10 of the season, and, as it was when the girls fell to Conant, it would be quite the surprise to Jennison and East to not advance from this matchup.

Mitch Dorsey and Jasminko Dizdarevic are among the go-to threats at forward, while Evan DiLeonardi is as steady as they come at midfield.

Indoor plumbing with a flushing toilet was not commonplace until the 20th century, even though the first flushing toilet was patented in 1775.

Queen Elizabeth I and other members of royalty had a type of toilet that emptied into a nearby body of water. Others used outhouses, chamber pots and holes in the ground. In the 18th century the wealthy sometimes had a special chair altered to hold a chamber pot. A period Chippendale commode corner chair was sold recently at a Cowan auction for $185, and at another auction a short Chippendale commode chair sold for $24,000. What was the difference?

The expensive chair had a tooled leather seat, an intricately designed skirt, well-shaped back panels and arms, and original finish. It is one of the best of its type. A regular chair was sometimes converted into a commode chair. A hole was put in the seat and a shelf below held the potty. The front panel on the chair that hides the potty was probably added when the chair was altered.

Careful examination can show where it is attached to the original seat.

And details of the style of the chair, the straight legs or curved legs with ball and claw feet, and the possible shortening of the arms all influence the price. Collectors want original antiques and alterations lower the value. And the most expensive furniture is always made by the best craftsmen. Today, more than in the past 20 years, the original finish adds much to the value. ***

Q: My blue cast-iron motorcycle was a gift when I was 5 years old. It has a policeman riding on it. The motorcycle is 6 inches long and 4 inches high. The tires are hard rubber and the original bulb is in the front light.

Does my old toy have any value?

A: Your police motorcycle was made by Hubley Co., founded in 1898 in Lancaster, Pa., by John E. Hubley. The company originally specialized in toy trains. It reorganized in 1909 and started to make cast iron toys-horse-drawn wagons and circus wagons, fire engines, miniature coal stoves and toy guns. As the automotive industry grew, Hubley added more and more models. The company stopped making cast iron toys in 1942 due to the war effort. After the war, it made diecast metal and plastic toys. The name was changed to Gabriel Industries in 1965, and in 1978, the company was bought by CBS. From about 1934 to 1936, Hubley made electrical toys, like your motorcycle, with battery-operated headlights. The motorcycles also made an exhaust sound. They’re rare, and your motorcycle could sell for $350 to $500, depending on its condition. *** Q: What is the sheet music for “Will You Remember (Sweetheart)” from the movie “Maytime” worth?

A: Your jug doesn’t have a maker’s mark, but a wine and liquor wholesaler operated in Buffalo, New York, at that address from the 1880s until about 1901. Salt-glazed stoneware pottery from Europe was used in America from its earliest days.

small local potters. Early decorations were incised and later designs were painted free hand, usually in cobalt blue glaze. By 1860 designs were more elaborate and had stylized flowers, leaves, birds and other pictures. Names often were printed or stamped on the jugs. Stoneware crocks held butter, sugar, spices, flour, coffee, tea, honey, molasses, pickles, cheese, smoked fish, meats and cheese. Stoneware jugs and bottles held vinegar and beer and kept water cool and drinkable. Don’t forget whiskey, that’s probably what was in your jug. Stoneware was out of favor by about 1910, after the inventions of canning in glass jars and refrigeration. Now collectors consider salt-glazed stoneware folk art. Prices are determined by rarity, unusual decoration or known maker.

A: Old city directories sometimes sell at auctions. An 1876 San Francisco directory sold for $234 several months ago. There are collectors of old books and ephemera, which includes other paper collectibles.

Some bookstores and auction houses specialize in selling old books. The directory probably has the most appeal in the Philadelphia area. It would sell best at an antiquarian book seller. 22 Anesthesia based on type of

procedure and state of health Dear Dr. K: I have a minor surgical procedure coming up. Will I have any say in the type of anesthesia the doctor uses?

Dear Reader: For some surgical procedures, more than one type of anesthesia may be appropriate. The doctor who will administer the anesthesia (the anesthesiologist) will talk to you about the options.

I spoke to Dr. Kristin Schreiber, an anesthesiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She explained anesthesia has four goals.

The first is to make sure you have no pain. The second is to make you drowsy or unconscious.

The third is to keep your body still during the procedure – you don’t want your surgeon to have to deal with a moving target.

And finally, the fourth is to prevent bad memories of the procedure.

There are four basic kinds of anesthesia. The type used depends on the procedure you’re having and your state of health.

Sometimes, but not always, the doctor will be able to take your preferences into account.

• Local anesthetics are injected near the area to be treated, to numb it.

Their effects are limited to a fairly small area.

They are used when you’re having dental work done, or if you require stitches. When a local anesthetic is first injected, you feel a very brief sting. Then the area becomes numb, and more local anesthetic can be injected. Although you won’t feel pain from dental work or stitches with a local anesthetic, you might feel pressure.

• In regional anesthesia, local anesthetics are injected near clusters of nerves. By numbing the nerves, the doctor is numbing all parts of the body to which those nerves travel. That is a larger area than local anesthetics injected

Regional anesthesia can numb all of your arm or foot, for example.

• Neuraxial anesthesia includes epidurals and spinals. First, the doctor numbs the skin above your spine with a local anesthetic. Then a needle is passed through the numbed area, and anesthetics are injected near the spine. The anesthetics are injected in a slightly different place for epidural anesthesia than for spinal anesthesia. Both types block sensation from the waist down. Epidurals commonly are given to ease the pain of labor and childbirth or the pain of a large abdominal incision.

Spinals often are used for cesarean section and knee surgery.

With both regional and neuraxial anesthesia, you may be able to choose how conscious you’ll be during the procedure.

With minimal sedation, you’ll be relaxed but aware of what’s going on.

Moderate sedation will allow you to drift in and out of consciousness, but still let you be easily aroused.

With deep sedation, you are essentially fast asleep and unlikely to remember anything.

• General anesthesia works in the brain to render you completely unconscious and unable to sense pain. This effect is achieved through a combination of intravenous drugs. You also are often given a drug to relax your muscles. For certain types of major surgery – heart surgery, for example – general anesthesia is the only choice.

Good declarer-play and defense require accurate tailoring of trumps, making the most of their power and trick-taking capability. Trumps serve many purposes: removing those held by the opponents, helping to establish a side suit, killing the opponents’ winners, and so on.

In this deal, West leads the club king against four hearts. What should happen?

Since West did not have a weak two-bid available in clubs, he traded on the favorable vulnerability to open three clubs.

South must take these 10 tricks: one spade, four hearts, three diamonds and two clubs. So, declarer wins the first trick and leads the heart nine. Which four tricks should East have his eye on?

First, East should realize that South has the spade ace. But the defenders need to take two spades, one heart and one club. (If West has seven clubs, presumably the contract is cast-iron.)

Should East shift to the spade king at trick three? Assuming South wins that trick, when West gets in with his club queen, he can push a spade through dummy’s jack. But suppose declarer ducks the spade. Then, when East returns his second club, West might get it into his mind to win and lead a spade, not another club.

It is much safer for East to lead a club at trick three. Here, West will take the trick and return a club so that East can ruff dummy’s jack. Then South has no chance.

Ruff away one of declarer’s winners when it does not cost a trump trick.

When I clicked on it, I discovered he is in rehab at a private-care facility that requires he stay for months.

It is very expensive. I contributed as generously as I could, considering my limited finances, and received a thank-you for my support.

I was happy to help.

Now, less than three weeks later, I’m seeing pictures of my friend on vacation. I don’t plan to say anything to this person, but I have learned a valuable lesson. From now on, I will donate my hard-earned money only to organizations I believe in and have researched.

Is this a new trend, people asking others to fund their family problems so they can go on with life as usual? I recently saw a GoFundMe page for a funeral, and I know the family is well-off.

The Argyle Sweater

Dear Abby: My wife and I have been married 16 years. We have three boys, ages 12, 6 and 2. My 6-yearold doesn’t sleep in his bed.

He sleeps on the couch. My wife sleeps in a recliner in the den. The 2-year-old usually sleeps with her.

Sometimes he sleeps in a crib in our room. I sleep by myself in a king-size bed.

There is no possibility for romance. The only time there can be is when my wife comes to bed. If this happens, I know something is going to take place, but I have no chance to initiate.

Our sex life is totally up to her. Once a month or so is fine with her, but not for me.

I have told her how I feel about our “sleeping arrangements,” but nothing has changed. I know I snore, but she has not complained about it keeping her awake or used it as an excuse.

Our 6-year-old will not sleep in his bed as long as his mother sleeps in the recliner. The longer this goes on, the harder it will be to get him in his bed.

Do you have any advice on what I should do or say about this situation? –
