Batavia Ave. Anderson, of Gurnee and Hultgren are vying for the U.S. 14th Congressional District on the Nov. 4 ballot.

Anderson will host his 20th town hall at 7 p.m. Oct. 27. and Oct. 28, at the Rotary Building at Veteran Acres, 431 Walkup Road, Crystal Lake.

They were married in 1964, shortly after Jim Casey, who was in the U.S. Navy at the

time, returned home from a year-long mission in the South Pole as part of Operation Deep Freeze.

“We were married two weeks later,” Lynne Casey said.

For the past 60 years, more than 1,000 couples have exchanged vows at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church.

“We have at least 25 to 30 weddings a year,” Zajac said.

GENEVA – The city of Geneva has announced its recommended trick-or-treat hours for Halloween on Oct. 31.

Children and parents are encouraged to trick-or-treat in their neighborhoods between the hours of 3 to 7 p.m.

Participating downtown Geneva businesses will be offering free treats to children from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 30.

For those looking for a weekend option, Geneva Commons will have trick-ortreating from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

According to a news release, the Geneva Police Department “wants all little superheroes, princesses and scary monsters to have a fun and safe Halloween experience this year.”

The department offered the following safety tips: • Wear light-colored clothing or some type of reflective material for better visibility.

• Ensure costumes fit and are worn in a manner that prevents tripping.

• If children wear masks, make sure they can see clearly and their visibility is not ob-

structed.

• Small children should always be accompanied by an adult.

• Go out in the daylight when possible and carry a flashlight for use if out after dark.

• Give and accept only wrapped candy.

• Examine all candy before allowing children to eat it.

• Carrying hard props such as swords and daggers should be substituted with soft foam rubber items.

• Stay within familiar neighborhoods.

• Watch for traffic.

During the ceremony, she reminded the couples of the special bond they share between them.

ST. CHARLES – Twenty-five years ago, Jay and Christine Fregeau were married by a judge, with a priest in attendance.

On Saturday, the couple got the church wedding they always wanted as they reaffirmed their vows along with 18 other couples in a ceremony at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles.

“What a joy it is to be in the presence of so many strong marriages,” said the Rev. Mary Zajac, as she presided over the ceremony. The church this year is celebrating its 60th anniversary in its current location, and the ceremony was part of the festivities.

Christine Fregeau said they always wanted a church wedding. But the ceremony was even more special for them because their daughter, Taylor Fregeau, and her fiancé, Scott Knight, will be getting married next summer at the church.

“It made it more real and exciting,” Taylor Fregeau said.

Also reaffirming their vows were Jim and Lynne Casey of St. Charles, who are celebrating 50 years of marriage.

North’s Furrie closes strong at AA state meet

jschwab@shawmedia.com St. Charles North sophomore Gianna Furrie already has set a goal for her junior year – win it all.

That’s a mouthful, but Furrie closed her sophomore year in emboldening fashion, registering birdies on her final two holes Saturday en route to a 4-over-par round of 76 at the IHSA Class AA State Meet.

Furrie’s two-day total of 157 tied her for 13th place among the state field of 114 golfers at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.

“I’m definitely happy about that because last year I ended like 49th, so that was a big improvement, but to get to the top 10, I was two strokes away,” Furrie said. “That would have been really cool, but definitely happy with my position.”

Furrie shaved five strokes off her opening-round performance, an 81 with which she

was displeased.

“At first I was really upset about it but I knew if I dwell on it too much it was not going to get better [Saturday],” Furrie said. “So I just kind of got over it and thought about which things I need to get better on and work on that, and then came out today.”

Furrie said she hit many more greens in regulation Saturday. She flirted with a holein-one on the par-3 8th hole but settled for converting a short birdie putt, and she added another birdie on No. 9, her final hole of the tournament.

“To end with two birdies, she stuck them both within three, four feet, there’s not a better way to close,” North coach Irish Whalen said.

Neuqua Valley junior Jessica Yuen shot a two-day 142, 2-under, to claim the individual championship.

As a team, North (136-over for the two days) landed in 11th place out of 12. Hinsdale

Central (58-over) won the team title.

Fellow North sophomore Kate Lillie had the opposite tournament trajectory of Furrie, struggling to an 87 on Saturday after opening the tournament more crisply Friday, when she carded an 81.

Senior Gabi Spinazze had North’s third-best two-day total (186) but finished one stroke behind junior Kayla Janchik and senior Alina O’Donnell on Saturday, both of whom shot rounds of 96.

“I was hoping we would do a little better but I can’t complain,” Furrie said of North’s team finish. “We made it to state, so that’s exciting.”

Burlington Central junior Josie Kurosky posted a twoday 175, tying for 68th place.

She shot 91 on Saturday.

BLOOMINGTON – The St. Charles East boys golf team finished in 11th place Saturday after the final day of the IHSA Class 3A state tournament.

The Saints were a cumulative 65 strokes over par for the two-day tournament, contested at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

Senior Gary King led the way Saturday with a 2-overpar 74 and was East’s top scorer for the two days (157). He tied for 40th place individually.

Teammate Colin Johnson shot a 79 to land at 160, while Daniel Haugen (two-day 162) and Ronnie Griggs (two-day 168) also paced the Saints, who finished four strokes behind

Loyola and Glenbrook North, which tied for ninth and 10th places.

Hinsdale Central (9-over for the tournament) won the team title. Individually, Hinsdale Central’s Kenneth Li (5-under 67 on Saturday and 4-under 140 for the tournament) commanded top honors.

Marmion sophomore Nick Huggins (two-day 158) tied for 46th place and teammate Jackson Clark, a junior, shot a 161, including a 79 on Saturday.

“It was a bit of a struggle,” Clark said. “I didn’t make too many birdies – that was kind of my goal coming in. I hit a lot a lot of good shots, a lot of good irons, a lot of good drives, but I think my putter really let me down this tournament. I can always improve on my putting.”

In Class 2A at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, St. Francis finished fifth as a team behind Jonathan Nocek’s two-day 153 (4-over 75 on Saturday), Connor Buckley (162), Pat Mochel (163) and Luke Armbrust (163).

The Spartans (72 over as a team) were 25 strokes behind team champion Morton.

Burlington Central’s Austin Niesel shot a two-day 154 to tie for 14th place individually.

In Class 1A, Aurora Christian took eighth place as a team, led by sophomore Brett Seward (two-day 160).

“We just work really well together,” Jurcenko said. “We’ve played for three years and we move really well together. I know what she can get, she knows what I can and can’t get.

“I think this is the best we’ve been playing out of our three years together. We know what to expect at state now and we know what mentality we have to have.”

Geneva senior Kirby Einck won the singles title, defeating Kaneland’s Sammie Schrepferman, 6-3, 6-0, in the championship match.

Einck advanced to the state tournament for the fourth time and was hopeful her experience would make a difference this go-around after playing a tough field to get there.

“I feel awesome,” Einck said. “That match, my final match was super good. She was a great competitor. I’m feeling good going into state, probably the best I’ve felt out of all

four years. I have experience behind me this time. I’m just hoping to play my best tennis and continue to play like I am right now.”

With low temperatures and light rain throughout the morning, staying warm was crucial to Einck’s success, with a quick turnaround between her final and semifinal victory over Lake Park freshman Gina Odisho, 6-1, 6-1.

“After playing that match I didn’t have time to get cold again so it was nice to go in warm,” she said. “I had just played really well; I’d beat a good player so I was feeling pretty confident going into the match.”

Schrepferman advanced to the state meet for her third time, defeating Geneva sophomore Grace Krueger, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinal.

In the final, the senior was able to generate a lot of power on her serve, especially in the first set, but unforced errors were killer in the second.

Einck was able to take ad-

vantage and forced Schrepferman to be on the move early and often.

“Really I was just focused on hitting every single ball back and moving her corner to corner because she gets a ton of balls back,” Einck said. “If I had hit it in the middle of the court she would just run me around. So I tried to really take control of the point but not to over hit.”

Krueger, a sophomore, rallied to defeat Odisho, 6-4, 6-4, to capture the third-place singles match and advanced to state for the second time.

Odisho rounded out the qualifying quartet by defeating Batavia’s Nora McClure 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Geneva won the sectional with 21 total points, with Kaneland coming in second with 20 and St. Charles North third with 17.

The state tournament will begin on Thursday and run through that Saturday, with Buffalo Grove serving as the tournament headquarters.

St. Charles East boys, Batavia girls win conference titles ELGIN – The St. Charles East boys cross country team, with help from its freshman-sophomore squad, retained the Upstate Eight Conference River title at Saturday’s conference meet at Lords Park.

Applying lessons learned from the frosh-soph race helped the Saints edge Batavia for the top spot.

East came in first with 39 points, followed by the Bulldogs with 46 points.

Geneva’s 71 points earned the Vikings third place while St. Charles North took fourth with a score of 92.

“I think we learned a lot from our frosh-soph race. The guys went out too fast, kind of faded,” East coach Chris Bosworth said. “We told the varsity team to go out just a little bit slower for that first mile and then when you hit that, start to build. That’s what we

did and we finished strong.”

Bosworth also credited the return of Michael Gerkin (16th place, 16:08.8), who was injured earlier in the season, with putting East on top.

“If you score one through four, we were tied with Batavia, so big kudos to our fifth man, Michael Gerkin,” Bosworth said. “He’s coming back from an injury and he hasn’t raced in a month. He really stepped up big time for us.”

Although Geneva finished third, coach Bob Thomson was pleased with his team’s showing.

“We pretty much knew that Batavia and St. Charles East would be battling for it and on the varsity side we’d been losing to St. Charles North all season long but we have been close a couple of times,” Thomson said. “The goal was to go in there and beat them, so we did.”

runners and seventh overall with a time of 15:18.7.

“I was leading the first mile but personally I think I started out a little too fast,” Wieties said. “I think I could of run a more even race but given the circumstances and the course, it’s not exactly the flattest, I think I was able to close it pretty well.”

Rounding out the top five River Division runners were Mark Sciurba of East (15:21.6), Mitchael Demantopulos from Geneva (15:25.9) and Jack Rezpecki (15:39.9) and Mike Skora (15:40.5), both from East.

Batavia edged Geneva by two points to take the girls River title. The Bulldogs scored 50 points to the Vikings’ 52. East came in third with 74 points and North took fifth, tallying 122.

“Our fifth was in front of their [Geneva’s] fourth and even our sixth and seventh weren’t too far behind their top five so our depth really paid off. They really beat us

up front,” Batavia coach Chad Hillman said.

Freshman Marygrace Golden’s burst of speed at the end of the race was the difference.

“Marygrace, who ended up being our third girl, was super tough the last couple

hundred meters. She ended up knocking a couple of places back and one of them was a Geneva girl … that’s the meet right there,” Hillman said.

Thomson said the Vikings lost “substantially” to Batavia earlier this season “and this time, we made it close.”

ST. CHARLES – With a frost advisory out as St. Charles East hosted its girls tennis sectional, staying warm and loose over the two-day competition seemed imperative.

Then Kaneland seniors Jelly Emmanouil and Madi Jurcenko blew that notion out of the water, winning the doubles championship behind a 6-0, 6-0 dominating performance over St. Charles North’s Lianne Anderson and Emma Spellman.

The Knights’ duo had to wait over 2½ hours to get back on the court after their 6-3, 6-2 semifinal victory over North’s Morgan Rerko and Brittany Rohrsen.

Wheaton Academy’s Maisie Howland and Lily Bracy had to play Geneva’s Emma Hazel and Shannon Foster in a quarterfinal matchup Saturday instead of Friday night.

By the time Wheaton Academy won the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, the Kaneland pair had already

won its semifinal.

Jurcenko said the delay didn’t hinder them, and their fundamentals, coupled with the warm-up period, enabled them to regroup.

“I think we just stuck to our mechanics,” Jurcenko said.

“Shift the shoulders, move your feet and get the body warmed up. You just have to go back to the basics and you go from there.”

Emmanouii said their offcourt friendship translated well to on-court success over the weekend, as the pair failed to drop a single set and played largely at ease.

“We’re friends off the court so it’s easy to laugh at each other when we’re doing bad and just get over it and move on,” Emmanouil said.

Howland and Bracy won the third-place doubles match, 7-5, 6-4, over Anderson and Spellman. All four pairs will advance to next week’s IHSA State Meet.

Dear Abby: Halloween is around the corner, and my 7-year-old daughter has decided to be a cowgirl. She wants the boots, the hat and the gun.

Is it appropriate to let her have a holster and an obviously toy gun to accessorize her costume for trick-or-treating? She would not be taking that part of her costume to school on Halloween. I live in a part of the country where guns are an important part of our culture, but I am unsure how to proceed. – Confused About Halloween In Montana Dear Confused: Guns may be an important part of the culture where you live, but how do YOU feel about them? If it’s all right with you, and the weapon your child carries is obviously a toy, then there should be no problem as you take her from house to house collecting her goodies.

But there is nothing wrong with a 7-year-old cowgirl not having a gun and holster as part of her costume. If you need verification, have her check out the character Jessie in the movie “Toy Story 2.”

P.S. Having her not take a toy gun to school is wise because many schools have strict policies about weapons – including toy weapons – being brought on campus.

That is a perfect way to lead into this week’s deals, in which the “obvious” play is not right.

Here, South is in six hearts.

West leads the diamond king.

South wins with his ace and cashes the heart ace-king, but East discards a spade on the second round. What should declarer do next?

After North used a three-diamond transfer bid, South’s three spades showed the spade ace, four-card heart support and, typically, a doubleton somewhere.

Then North, who knew the partnership had the values for a small slam, transferred again with four diamonds before jumping to the small slam. (Yes, he might have control-bid four clubs to show his ace.)

South is faced with two losers: the heart queen and the diamond queen. He must discard dummy’s two diamonds before West can ruff in and cash his diamond queen. With only five spades between the two hands, it looks obvious to play on that suit first – but it is wrong! West ruffs the third spade and cashes his diamond queen.

If West has fewer than three clubs, the contract is unmakable.

So South should play on that suit first. If it breaks 3-3, then he hopes West also has at least three spades. But when West turns up with four clubs, one diamond can disappear on the club 10 and the second on the third spade, West’s ruff coming too late for him.
