don’t think I’ve never known my postal carrier’s first name.

All my years living in Chicago, and even growing up, my family never made that special of a connection with the person who delivers our mail every day.

This was absolutely not the case for carrier Steve Hicks and the Geneva residents whose hearts he touched as he wound his way between the Fox River and East Side Drive every day for 14 years.

Hicks died this past week.

As dozens of USPS mail trucks drove Steve’s route in his memory Thursday, I saw Padma Lacy, Maria Martel and Jean Zimmer standing in Zimmer’s driveway, wiping tears from their cheeks.

STC Fire Department to host open house

Gerard Keating, president and CEO of Keating Resources LLC, also in Geneva, said about 100 people will attend the twoh o u r c a s u a l Jeb Bush meet-and-greet event at the home in the 300 block of Elizabeth Place. Donations are $250 to $1,000 a person, Keating said.

“I started investing in Florida three years ago, based on its pro-business environment versus the anti-business environment in Illinois,” Keating said. “And I was struck by what I experienced – which is the growing population of investment in school and infrastructure throughout the state from one end to the other. His company invests in agriculture and real estate, he said, and he considers himself a beneficiary of the positive business environment Bush’s policies created in Florida.

Water main project’s finish delayed editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Earlier this year, the city of St. Charles launched a large-scale project to replace the water main on North Fifth Avenue. The original project completion was slated for September. Because of the scope and complexity of this project, weather delays and some unforeseen circumstances, project completion has been pushed back to later this fall, according to a news release.

The project includes replacement of 5,400 feet of water main, along with auxiliary items, such as fire hydrants, valves and vault boxes. Also being replaced are water mains on Iroquois Avenue, between North Fifth and Third avenues, and on Allen Lane between North Fifth Avenue east

“And I said if he decided to run for president, I would love to host a fundraiser at my home in Geneva as a small thank you for what he helped create in Florida and which could be duplicated throughout the U.S.” Keating said his son, Alec, 17, a senior at Geneva High School, will be at the gathering with some football teammates, as they will be old enough to vote in the primary and election next year.

“Jeb wanted to meet his team and talk to him about the future,” Keating said.

“We strongly encouraged whatever friends of his want to meet Jeb and listen, and that is what this is about.

Many people are undecided who they will vote for, and I

The release stated although there is minimal excavation, there are areas that can be accessed only by excavating the road. Because some of these areas need to be opened more than once throughout the course of the project, they are covered with temporary

patches. Some of these temporary patches have deteriorated over time. The contractor will examine the roads and fix any patches in need of maintenance.

The contractor also will clean up the right of way and other work areas, removing debris and construction materials that are not needed for future work, the release stated.

“This project is vital to maintaining safe and reliable service to residents,” Peter Suhr, director of public works, stated in the release. “We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your continued patience.”

COVER STORY ‘ONE OF THE COOLEST MOMENTS’ Jeffery Austin puts musical talents, history to test On the Web

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jeffery Austin had his first experience Wednesday being mobbed by fans.

Students at Haines Middle School crowded the 24-yearold singer in the hopes of getting an autograph and a photo while he visited classes.

“You may not be a national star yet, but you’re a star to them,” Austin said. “It was so fun to be able to make them happy; they were all really excited.”

Austin, who graduated in 2009 from St. Charles North High School, is a contestant on “The Voice” singing competition currently airing every Monday and Tuesday on NBC. Austin – whose real last name is McClelland – will compete against 47 other hopefuls for a chance to win a recording contract.

On Monday, Austin’s debut aired with his rendition of the Sam Smith song “Lay Me Down.” He ended up on No Doubt singer and “The Voice” Coach Gwen Stefani’s team.

Fellow coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton later expressed regret for not turning their chairs around during his blind audition.

Austin said he hadn’t performed on a big stage since 2009, when he was in high school. He first learned the keys on the piano from one of his grandmothers, Sonnie Brommel.

Before Austin’s father died of complications from an enlarged heart when Austin was 9, he would sing songs with his son that Austin’s other grandmother Nancy McClelland, taught him.

Austin performed in the school plays, musicals and was a member of the St. Charles North High School Chorale.

separate email about the pride she feels for her son. McClelland, her other son, Casey, and Austin’s grandparents were at Austin’s televised audition.

Austin shifted gears in college and went into public relations, eventually ending up in an agency in New York. He had

seen the first season of “The Voice” in 2011 and watched its eighth season intently. When the show held open calls in New York in January, Austin was there.

“I did ‘Lay Me Down’ at my open call, my first song, a capella,” Austin said.

With that, Austin continued on the casting process that led him to the blind audition, which involves contestants singing while the coaches face away from them. If one or more coaches hit their button to turn their chair during a blind audition, the contestant has made it on the show.

“It’s one of the coolest moments of my life,” Austin said of his performance. “I got one chair, but it was definitely the right chair.”

Austin said Stefani is motherly, great to work with and emotionally connected to he and the other members of “Team Gwen.”

After the rest of the blind auditions air this month, the next stage of the competition is called battle rounds. Austin will have to compete against another member on Stefani’s team by singing the same song together in front an audience.

Battle round episodes are expected to start airing the week of Oct. 11, and viewers are encouraged to keep watching the show throughout since Austin’s next air date won’t be revealed in advance.

If Stefani does not pick Austin to move forward, he still has a chance to be picked up by one of the other three coaches.

“The steals are in play ... it will be interesting for everyone to see what happens,” Austin said.

Michels said the village appreciates the company’s investment, noting anything that brings more people to Sugar Grove is a “real plus.”

The new 15,000-squarefoot facility will include 7,500 square feet of synthetic turf and 4,500 square feet of hitting and pitching tunnels, Clark said.

The actual steel structure is being built elsewhere and is expected to be delivered the week of Oct. 26, he said, explaining it will be attached to the north side of the existing building at 769 Heartland Drive.

Top-Pick Athletics plans to open the facility by January, as the first team rental is scheduled for Jan. 11, Clark said. He said Top-Pick Athletics serves athletes in soccer, lacrosse, cheer and wrestling, as well as those in baseball and softball.

Grand opening scheduled for new park

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove Park District officials will host the grand opening of the new Harter Community Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday during the Go Fly A Kite festival at Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove.

The park is adjacent to Harter Middle School, officials said.

Sugar Grove Park District Recreation Superintendent Karen Pritchard said it was a two-year project that involved

support from Kaneland School District 302 and a $400,000 grant from the state.

The 15-acre park cost more than $1 million to develop, she said. It has three baseball diamonds, a multipurpose court for tennis and inline hockey, two bags courts, a picnic shelter under a gazebo, a playground and pathways with enhanced natural areas of prairie grasses and other native plants, she said.

“It’s a wonderful thing the school district is doing for us and the community,” Pritchard said. “And it also benefits them to have the park for the middle

school kids.”

The school district donated the use of the land to the park district, Pritchard said.

In turn, the park district developed the land with money saved in its capital development fund.

The district also received a $400,000 matching Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, although there was no land acquisition, only development, Pritchard said.

“We are waiting for the state to pass a budget so we can get reimbursed,” Pritchard said.

Three retired Kane County teachers currently are traveling in Lithuania and Belarus to promote Snowball, an award-winning drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention program to help teens stay healthy.

Jack Irwin, 76, of Geneva, a retired Kaneland School District 302 counselor, said this is his 60th trip to Lithuania since 1992, when he first went there to establish the alcohol and drug prevention program.

Others traveling with Irwin are Steve LeVrouw, 68, of DeKalb, a retired Kaneland science and math teacher; and Magaret Perry, 65, of rural Burlington Township, a retired Central District 301 language arts teacher.

The three will spend 15 days visiting 14 of the 37 chapters of Snowball in Lithuania and the single program in Minsk, Belarus, Irwin said.

“We’ve gone from one Snowball chapter in 1994 to 37 in 2015,” Irwin said. “Our goal is to keep healthy teens healthy.”

LeVrouw said this is his third trip to Lithuania with Irwin to promote the Snowball program.

“It’s a good, worthwhile organization,” LeVrouw said.

“The first time I went over, I was blown away by the kids. It was one of the better experiences I had.”

Perry said she is taking her first trip to Lithuania with Irwin because she wanted to help teens avoid drug and alcohol use and make healthy choices.

“Students and young people over in Lithuania have heavy drug and alcohol use and a high suicide rate,” Perry said. “They need to believe in themselves and build bridges with others and become [the] people they can be.”

Mail carriers honor colleague with procession following his route

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Mail carrier Steve Hicks didn’t live along his Geneva route, but that didn’t make him any less of a neighborhood fixture.

He knew the residents’ names. He knew their dogs’ names. He befriended a 6-year-old boy who called him Mr. Steve. He offered to assist with yard work. He was, as one Woodward Avenue resident said, family.

“We loved him,” Padma Lacy said. “We were his family. He was part of our family.”

Thursday, she and others on his route paid their respects as the late mail carrier’s colleagues sacrificed their lunch break to drive his route, which included the streets between the Fox River and East Side Drive.

“I thank God we were allowed the chance to do this,” Geneva mail carrier Michael Melchor said. “He truly deserved it.”

The Geneva Police Department provided a police escort for the procession. Cmdr.

Eric Passarelli wrote in an email that it is an honor and privilege to provide funeral-related escorts to the community.

“We understand that it is a time of great difficulty for the families and friends affected,” he wrote. “We hope that these escorts help provide some solace to the family. It is commonly requested that we utilize a route that travels past the residence, place of

Two St. Charles businesses fined for liquor violations

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Two St. Charles businesses cited for allowing patrons to exit their premises with alcohol must pay a $500 fine, according to a city news release issued Thursday.

The Alibi Bar and Grill, at 12 N. Third St., and Hotel Baker, at 100 W. Main St., also were required to pay $500 in court costs, the release states.

According to the release, the hotel was cited July 25, and the

restaurant was cited Aug. 30.

The release indicated that only one patron was involved in each incident.

Mayor Ray Rogina, who also serves as liquor control commissioner, enforced the local liquor ordinances at the Sept.

21 meeting of the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission, according to the release.

“Cooperation between the city and our business community is vital,” Rogina stated in the release. “Both licensees assured the commission and me that

they will increase safeguards to avoid this type of situation from occurring again.”

According to city documents, Hotel Baker was last fined in September 2013 for allowing patrons to leave with alcohol, and it received a warning letter in November 2014 about patrons consuming alcohol outside its premises.

Documents indicate the Alibi was last fined in June 2014 for selling and allowing consumption of alcohol outside the licensed premises.

They and residents described him as a friendly, good man who cared deeply for his customers.

“His heart matched his height,” Lacy said.

The Buss family was among many residents who displayed flags Thursday in honor of Hicks.

Lisa and Curt Buss watched with their daugh-

ters, 3-year-old Sophie and 7-month-old Julia, as the trucks passed their house.

“He was a fixture in the neighborhood,” Lisa Buss said.

She said she felt bad that her 6-year-old son, Evan, missed the tribute because he often would greet Hicks.

“He’ll miss his Mr. Steve,” she said.

ELBURN – The Elburn Lions Club will host its Classic All Wheel Car Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Lions Park, 500 S. Filmore St., Elburn.

Lions show committee member Jeff Miller said about 400 cars are expected to be shown on the park’s 25 acres, with about 2,000 people likely to attend.

The show is free to spectators and $20 for vehicle entries at the gate. Proceeds will go to breast cancer research, but Miller said the Lions have not yet decided which charity will receive the funds.

The show has more than 25 classes for cars, trucks and motorcycles from Model T’s to muscle cars, Miller said.

New this year is a Best of the Best class where the Lions invite owners of award-winning cars at other shows to compete against each other, Miller said.

“We’re going to have some pretty outstanding trophies,” Miller said.

The awards will start at 3 p.m., he said. Also new this year are two classifications for the Best of the Best, modified

and stock cars, Miller said.

“It’s hard to judge when they’re totally different cars,” Miller said.

Modified is when the cars are changed, such as with different motor, interior or wheels, he said.

“Stock is when the vehicle looks like it did when it left the showroom,” Miller said.

“Original wheels, tires and motor.”

Other activities include music, a swap meet and a craft show.

The rich get hit harder by inflation than the poor

By NOAH SMITH Bloomberg View What if inequality isn’t as bad as we’ve been led to believe?

That is the upshot of new research by Juan Sanchez and Lijun Zhu of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. They looked at changes in the prices of various items, and they found the things poor people buy more of have gone up in price by a lot less than the things rich people buy more of.

Usually, we measure inequality by looking at differences in real income. But real, in this case, means adjusted for inflation, and inflation is different depending on whether you’re rich or poor. Rich people spend more on college tuition, entertainment and eating out. Poor people devote more to electricity, clothing and eating in.

Sanchez and Zhu found the prices of education, entertainment and medical care have gone up hugely since 1980 (when the U.S.’s big increase in inequality is generally thought to have begun).

But the prices of clothing, electricity, new cars and public transportation have increased only a small or moderate amount. In other words, it is getting more and more expensive to maintain a rich lifestyle, but not much more expensive to support a working-class lifestyle.

Using different inflation rates for different socioeconomic classes weakens the story of widening income inequality. If you use only the consumer price index, a broad measure of inflation, you see working-class people’s income gains since 1980 being eaten up by increased prices. But if you realize that the prices working-class people actually pay on a daily basis haven’t gone up by as much as the CPI, you understand that the income of working-class people has increased more than is generally believed. And because the prices rich people pay daily have gone up by more than the CPI, that means gains in their real income have been less than is commonly advertised.

Of course, we shouldn’t take this logic too far. The increase in the prices of the goods wealthy people buy makes it harder for working-class people to break into the rich-people lifestyle. That’s doubly true when the item in question is college, which offers one of the best opportunities for climbing the socioeconomic ladder.

There is also a deeper reason why this kind of finding shouldn’t let us stop worrying about inequality. It goes to the very heart of why we care about inequality in the first place. ... It just doesn’t seem right for working-class people to slave away for days for the same amount of money that a rich person can earn in a few hours. But that’s only part of the problem. Inequality also has negative social consequences. People don’t simply care about the goods and services their money can buy.

In other words, if you’re afraid that we’re moving toward a Dickensian world in which the poor starve in the street, don’t fret. But if you – like me – are concerned about a society in which respect is increasingly reserved for only a few rich people, then you should still be worried.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR A flawed juxtaposition

To the Editor: The Pareto Principle: A rule of thumb stating that 80 percent of outcomes are attributed to 20 percent of a cause, also referred to as the “law of the vital few.”

In no arena is this more true than the world of gambling, where those vital few equal minorities, women, low-wage earners and seniors. Disproportionately, casino revenue comes from our most exploited and vulnerable, not those out for an evening of dinner or those driving through St. Charles on their way to the flea market. Those casual gamblers represent only 4 percent of revenue, according to some studies.

There currently is an open store front near the Arcada Theatre. Perhaps a cozy bar or restaurant occupies that space, and the owners apply for a video gambling license.

The Illinois Gaming Board doesn’t care if it is next to a historical landmark theater.

Once our elected officials “opt-in” for video gambling, they are essentially out of

the equation and have little control or say to where, how many and what location the licenses are granted. Would any St. Charles resident be happy with a neon sign advertising slot machines next to the cherished Arcada Theatre?

And if our City Council limits liquor licenses because of location, in the attempt to control gambling parlors, litigation is certainly to follow.

I urge our elected lawmakers in St. Charles to read the mounds of studies available as diligently as they are seduced by a casino industry spread sheet. Reckless gambling saturation is neither benign nor economically honorable.

According to “Gambling Economics: Summary Facts” by professor Earl L. Grinols, “Gambling fails a cost-benefit test: Conservatively estimat-

ed, costs to benefits exceed $3: $1.” Social costs can result from increased crime, family disintegration and bankruptcy, to name a few. And how is this for a statistic: $1 million – yes, $1 million – has to be wagered and lost by our everyday citizens for St. Charles to receive $50,000 in revenue. How is that at all worth it? This has proven to be an unstable and failed revenue source time and time again.

It seems a very flawed juxtaposition that our elected officials, the very people we charge with protecting the public, are the ones who may put us into harms way.

No citizen or their family is expendable for the sake of revenue.

Kickers keep thunder foot, even keel

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com Adam Durocher and the St. Charles North football team found out just how important one kick can be.

North had just taken a late lead over Geneva two weekends ago, and Durocher lined up his PAT to give the North Stars a seven-point lead.

Geneva’s Griffin Bellano blocked the kick and North ended up losing by a point.

While it might not have been the junior kicker’s fault that it was blocked, it proved the point that in high school, getting in the end zone doesn’t guarantee seven points.

“It’s so important to for everyone to do their job on special teams,” Durocher said. “I try to go out and do the same things every time, with my steps and everything, and pay attention to the little details.

It’s one kick and it’s over with, but that lost us the game and it shows how important every play can be.”

Durocher has had kicking in his blood since he can remember. Although his parents never played soccer, all of the Durocher kids have. If that last name sounds familiar, it’s probably due to the fact that Durocher’s sister, Hanna, was the 2015 Kane County Chronicle Girls Soccer Player of the Year last spring and currently plays at NCAA Division III Barry University in Florida.

Their younger brother, Billy, is the kicker for the North freshman football team, as well.

Adam Durocher played soccer up until eighth grade, but once his kicking ability was recognized by North assistant coach Tom Poulin after a game with the sophomore team last year, the varsity job has been his ever since.

“I try to stay away from everyone,” Durocher said. “As a kicker, you can’t really get too fired up or have a ton of energy, you know. All of the steps and alignment can change if you’re off by just an inch, so it’s important to keep focus and stay calm.”

It may have been hard for Batavia kicker Jack Carlson to keep his cool when the Bulldogs took the field at Oswego in Week 1. Carlson, a freshman, took part in a tryout for the position with the entire Batavia football team during the summer.

Coach Dennis Piron joked

that it came down to wide receiver Canaan Coffey, running back Zach Garrett, Carlson and a few linemen. While Coffey still takes care of the punting duties, Piron saw something in Carlson that gave him confidence in a freshman at the varsity level.

“He’s got the ability to put the ball anywhere,” Piron said.

“He’s got the perfect mindset for a kicker. He’s calm and focused when he gets out there.

He has one thing to worry about taking care of and he does it very well.”

Twice this season, Carlson, who Piron said has missed two extra points has executed an onside kick to perfection. As uncommon as it was, with both coming in key situations, there was something more unusual.

The right-footed kicker

used his left foot for an onside kick against the North Stars.

“I just tried it in practice once lefty, and I ended up being pretty good at it,” Carlson said.

Carlson, also a wide receiver for the freshman team, said varsity wideout Nick Stuttle sits with him before games to calm his nerves. Ever since the Oswego game and first home game, the nerves have dwindled. But the freshman’s confidence gained him more than enough respect from his varsity peers.

“When you’re able to spot the ball and put it in a place, and you know he’s going to put it in that place, our confidence in him is amazing,” Batavia quarterback Kyle Niemiec said. “What’s even better is the confidence he has in himself.

It seems like he’s been up here forever, you know, and it’s crazy to think that he’s just a freshman.”

The luxury of having a reliable kickers is one of the more undervalued things in high school football. After St. Charles East’s Nick Candre drilled a 45-yarder in a Week 2 game, Saints coach Bryce Farquhar said, “I don’t see many people around being able to do what he does.”

Before suffering a torn labrum in Week 3, Marmion’s Connor Hoeft had built a reputation as one of the top kickers in the region.

As it is, coaches have enough stress poring over film and game-planning for teams.

Having that reliable kicker is one less concern heading into Friday nights.

For the second week in as many starts, junior Zach Mitchell suffered an injury. “It’s just the style of offense we run,” Farquhar said. “I’d rather our QB see the hits coming in front of him, than get blindsided by hits. I take that all day.”

ROUGH STRETCH Things will not get any easier for 0-5 Burlington Central in the coming weeks. The Rockets host Big Northern Conference leader Marengo (5-0) this week, before heading on the road to play a couple of 4-1 teams in Richmond-Burton and Johnsburg.

The best hope to pick up a win might be against Rockford Christian (0-5) in Week 9.

The buzz in the stands

If it has seemed that Batavia has passed every test it has faced this season, well, it has. Tonight brings another tough Class 8A opponent in Naperville Central, a nonconference foe.

Batavia put up another impressive win, 48-28, over St. Charles North last week, while the Redhawks improved to 4-1 after a 20-8 victory over Wheaton Warrenville South. Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron and Naperville Central coach Mike Stine know each other very well, and both expect the game to be a battle.

“I think it’s a great matchup of two good football teams,” Piron said. “I expect some mid-game adjustments and a chess match out there. We’re looking forward to it.”

The marquee matchup

There’s no question that Batavia will see the best defense it has this season tonight, and the same can be said in reverse for the Redhawks defense. Naperville Central is allowing under 10 points per game in a strong DuPage Valley Conference, while Batavia has averaged almost 40 points per game offensively in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. Something has to give “It looks like they have 15 players out there on defense sometimes,” Piron said.

There hasn’t been a defense that Batavia quarterback Kyle Niemiec (1,192 yards) has yet to solve, and with weapons like Canaan Coffey and running back Zach Garrett, a balanced offense has certainly helped.

“They are going to get their yards, but if we can limit big plays, that will be big for us,” Stine said. “We’re OK with 16-18play drives if we end up keeping them off the scoreboard. Their offense creates a lot of problems and we know we have our hands full.”

The X-factor:

I’m going to cheat a little and take two X-factors that will determine the outcome, but they will certainly have an affect on each other. First off will be the battle of first downs. No, not who tallies more first downs tonight, but instead the yardage gained on first-down plays.

Whichever team can force the opposing offense into second and third down and long situations will be in much better shape.

“They don’t give you a lot defensively, so avoiding second and third and longs is big,” Piron said.

“It’s key for us to put their offense in those stressful situations, especially third and longs.” Stine said. “If we can win that, we put ourselves in a good spot.”

Building off that, the second X-factor will be Naperville Central’s time of possession. One way to not get beat by the Batavia offense is to keep the Bulldogs off the field.

Best-case scenario for the Redhawks

Batavia will look to impose its will with size up front to push around that strong Redhawks defense.

The Bulldogs won’t make it three straight 40-point games, but 35 isn’t too shabby. This team is on a mission, and I don’t see a defense being able to outsmart Piron and Niemiec at this point. I think Naperville Central will have trouble with everything the Bulldogs throw at them. Oh yeah, Batavia’s defense isn’t too shabby, either. Batavia wins and goes to 6-0.

The skinny: Just when it looked like the Knights were rolling and getting back to playing Kaneland football, last week happened. A tough loss to rival DeKalb puts Kaneland at 3-2 and in need of a response

this week.

Although Sycamore is coming off a shutout win, Knights coach Tom Fedderly will head into this contest with confidence that his team will pick up a victory.

Since day one, Kaneland’s goal has been to return to the postseason after missing the playoffs in 2014.

Extra point: Sycamore has been a thorn in Kaneland’s side the past couple seasons, winning the last two meetings.

Those wins include a 2013 win that was the only regular season defeat Kaneland suffered that year.

Impassioned North Stars top Saints

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – It was an emotionally charged Thursday afternoon at the St. Charles North natatorium.

The North girls swimming team squared off against crosstown rival St. Charles East on senior night. Also, the meet honored the For Scout Foundation, a charitable organization formed in memory of Scout Cantrell, a 9-year old swimmer who died last year from complications of an asthma attack.

The North Stars swimmers remained focused on the task at hand and won, 101-85.

“I really like the performance of the kids from top to bottom,” North coach Rob Rooney said. “It was obviously a very emotional meet. I’m proud that the team is learning how to focus on meets. That’s extremely big, especially when you trying to put together teams for your championship meets.”

“It was a tough loss,” East coach Joe Cabel said. “We battled well with them, but they’re just stronger across the board.”

The Saints opened and closed the meet with wins, winning the starting event, the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.52)

and final race, the 400 freestyle relay (3:38.96).

“We were good at the beginning and at the very end,” Cabel said. “We need to firm up the middle.”

North dominated in between, winning eight of the remaining 10 events. North’s Guyett sisters figured in five of the events. Senior Monica Guyett won the 200 free (1:53.9), the 500 free (5:06.23) and swam the final leg of the 200 free relay. Guyett, Jill Waslawski, Grace Samuelson and Samantha Sauer took top honors in the event with a time of 1:37.52.

“I think it’s always fun swimming against East,”

Guyett said. “A lot of the girls know each other from club swimming, so it’s a fun competition.”

Sophomore Audrey Guyett came in first in the 100 backstroke (56.61) and the 200 IM (2:06.40).

Sauer also won two races for the North Stars – the 50 free (24.44) and the 100 free (53.59).

Isabel Herb, competing in the event for the first time, won the 100 butterfly (58.15) for the Saints. Kayla Jones was East’s other individual winner. The junior won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.42.

“We knew that North was strong coming in,” Herb said.

“I thought our girls did amazing with the circumstances that we were under.”

The loudest cheers of the night happened after the meet when Rooney and Cabel presented the Cantrell family a check for $5,640 for their foundation. Cabel also announced that East’s swimming team would donate another $1,000.

Katie Cantrell, a freshman, is on the North swim team.

“The Cantrell family lost a young girl a year ago who was a member of our swimming community and both sides down here are big into supporting each other with things of that nature,” Rooney said.

Sports are icebreaker for Geneva family as well. So we’re just a golfing family.”

QUICK READ Kevin Druley Darby Lillibridge once wielded a hockey stick. She wishes she could again.

“Actually, I miss it a lot,” Lillibridge said, smiling and showing all her teeth. “My mom took me out when I was little. She didn’t want a third hockey player in the family, so, yeah.”

Golf and hockey lately have been mutually exclusive for the Lillibridges, an athletic-minded clan that now watches Darby shine as a sophomore for the Geneva girls golf team.

Older brothers Colin and Graham also are former Vikings golfers. Graham and Darby’s prep careers could have intersected last fall, but Graham elected not to compete for Geneva as a sophomore, focusing on his budding hockey prospects instead.

The Cubs series, held from a Saturday through a Monday, closes a six-game homestand that begins with a three-game visit from the West Michigan Whitecaps, a Detroit Tigers affiliate that dethroned the Cougars as MWL champs last month.

The Cougars open the 2016 MWL season at home, facing Clinton at 6:30 p.m. April 7.

Playing more than ever before under new head coach Eric Golz, Koehl has four times as many goals this season as she did in her entire collegiate career entering the fall.

“With the new coach, I Lauren started playing a lot. Recently, Koehl I’ve been doing pretty well, I guess,” she said.

“Everything’s just been clicking and going right. Things are looking really good.”

While the injury was an unfortunate thing to occur, it’s had a positive effect, in retrospect, forcing Koehl to work harder than ever before to not just get back to the level she was playing at but to attain a higher level.

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber “An injury like that happens and it kind of humbles you,” Koehl said. “You kind of know that the world’s not perfect and things aren’t going to go your way, so you have to work and know that you have to work really hard to get back. People are playing this position and stuff like that. So you have to work hard to get back where you were.

“Once you start rehab and start playing again, your mind’s like, ‘I can do this, I can do this.’ And really good things happen.”

The mental aspect of things couldn’t have been that difficult for Koehl, who counts psychology as one of her two majors at Illinois State, along with recreational

management.

She said that the things learned in her psychology classes can come in handy at times when on the soccer field, too.

“I always get asked if I’m analyzing people. Sometimes it does help. The way people think or act, you kind of think, ‘Oh’, and you think back to your classes,” Koehl said. “It does help a little bit; you get a little edge, I guess you could say.”

After this season wraps up – the Redbirds have five regular-season games remaining before competing in Missouri Valley Conference tournament – Koehl will spend a fifth year at Illinois State, making up for that time

lost to the injury.

Her goals for the remainder of 2015 are simple: keep playing well and help the team win.

“For the rest of this season, I hope to keep scoring, putting balls in the back of the net, helping our team win conference,” Koehl said.

Stronger since her injury and playing well of late, those goals are looking quite attainable, indeed.

Two years ago, Lauren Koehl’s sophomore season at Illinois State was wiped out after the St. Charles North product tore her ACL. But that injury and the subsequent recovery has only made her a stronger women’s soccer player.

“That was tough right when it happened. Obviously, you don’t want that to happen. I think I kept really positive in coming back. I was really strong, I think I came back maybe better than I was before,” Koehl said.

“You just do so much training that you kind of have to come back better and stronger. You kind have to step into being confident and all that stuff, especially with this injury. It was tough, but I got out of it.”

Koehl is now a redshirt junior, playing in her second season since returning from that injury, and she’s playing a big role in her fourth year in the program. She leads the

Spending the day with Pope Francis

Around 2 p.m., the rush of people began in earnest. In the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., where I was stationed, a sea of brown and gray appeared. These were seminarians, mostly young men, but also numerous young women, all in a spirited and festive mood.

At 3 p.m. we volunteers were given the choice of waiting for Pope Francis upstairs with the seminarians or sitting on the front steps outside.

I chose to stay indoors, which proved not to be the best choice. Huge screens had been erected in the main church so people inside could view Francis’ progress toward the basilica. He arrived around 3:45 p.m. and passed in his popemobile right before the front steps of the basilica. I was regretting my choice at this point.

However, a few minutes later, a HUGE cheer went up in the basilica as Francis appeared from the back and proceeded up the main aisle toward the sacristy where he was to don his robes for Mass.

All decorum completely disappeared as seminarians and volunteers stood on the pews hoping to get

a glance of our Francis.

I saw him a couple of times coming up the aisle, but there were so many wild seminarians in front I could not get a picture.

No matter. The moment was magical. The wild clapping and cheering for Francis was chillingly beautiful to hear and to be part of. It seemed like a dream to be in the same place with this man, not so much Francis himself but what he represents to us – our church, humanity, our planet.

Everyone quieted down for several minutes and then Francis emerged again in his vestments following the cross and his attendants as he proceeded through the east doors of the basilica onto the porch erected for the Mass of Canonization. Cheers and clapping went up again but were more subdued in respect for his proceeding to the beginning of Mass.

There were screens all around the interior of the basilica so everyone there had a close-up of what was taking place outside.

I must say the Mass was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever attended. There was such joy in the music from the great orchestra, the ever-superior choir of the basilica and the cantors.

The Mass lasted more than two

hours – Catholics are not acquainted to so much extended time in church – but it seemed to pass so quickly.

When the Mass was over, Pope Francis returned to the interior, leaving the cheers for him from the crowd outside, to be greeted by cheers again as he returned inside. Then came the mass exodus in front, because we all knew his vehicle would be picking him up in front. He emerged from below about 30 minutes later, and I could see him quite clearly but had given up on attempting a picture. I just wanted to savor the moment.

Again much cheering, clapping and cries of “Viva Francesco!”

He paused to wave and bless the crowd and was in his vehicle and off to visit a nearby seminary.

My friend, Carrie, and I walked out into the street with hundreds of other people and proceeded on the long trek to my car which was parked in the parking lot of Archbishop Carroll High School.

By this time, dusk was descending as we walked along Michigan Avenue to encounter the detritus of such events: Men selling T-shirts at a great discount – all cheap knock-offs with images of Pope Francis on the front, guaranteed to disappear at the first washing – and then the man with the

bullhorn screaming that the Pope was the Antichrist and that we should all repent for following him. Reality!

Everyone appeared more amused than bothered.

We made the trek to the car up a long hill and then proceeded to go in the wrong direction at that point, ending up in a wooded area and somehow coming upon the backside of Archbishop Carroll High School, where we could see the car but were halted by a fence.

Carrie made it over the fence very easily. I somehow got stuck getting over and ended up on my rear-end, but on the opposite side at least.

By this time, darkness was upon us. We got to the car and went to my house, where Carrie had her car parked. She got in her car for the 40-mile trek to her home beyond Manassas, Virginia.

I went inside my house and after feeding the animals and brushing my teeth, I fell into bed to sweet dreams.

Dear Abby: Our family dog

recently passed away after a year-long decline. I had grown up with him. He had reached the point where he needed daily care for his body, even though his mind was 100 percent there. Near the end, things got very bad. I got only about four hours of broken sleep a night caring for him, and no one in the family would help me. During part of his daily care routine, he had a second accident all over the freshly cleaned floor. I lost it and hit him.

He’s gone now, and I can barely live with myself. When I think about it, I get nauseated and dryheave. I literally hate myself. In my book, exhaustion doesn’t give anyone the right to do what I did.

I’m old enough to know better.

This makes me want to change my life plans and never have another pet or have children – just in case.

The first step is to choose the “right” red meat. The USDA grades meat by its fat content.

Avoid meats that are labeled “prime,” since they have more fat. Instead, choose leaner cuts that are graded “choice” or “select.” Look for meat that has less visible fat, and make sure the label says the meat is lean.

Leaner beef cuts include chuck, flank and roasts. For

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff pork, go with tenderloin or center-cut chops. Chops and roasts are the leanest cuts of veal and lamb. Stay away from bacon and other processed meats; they are higher in preservatives and salt than unprocessed meats.

The next step is to cut back.

Even modest amounts of red meat put you at a higher risk for developing heart disease, colon cancer and diabetes.

Try to make red meat an occasional food. Aim for no more than two servings a week, with a serving size no greater than 3 ounces (about the size of a deck of cards). That gives you plenty of protein. Make changes gradually. For example, if you eat red meat every day, twice a day, try to cut down to once a day, then just a few times a week. In place of red meat, substitute healthier protein sources such as fish, poultry, beans or nuts.

Another approach is to think less about cutting back on red meat and more about how to add more healthful foods, par-

ticularly vegetables and fruits, to your diet. Why? Because piling on the produce means there’s less room on your plate (and in your stomach) for less healthful foods.

Here are some ways to work more produce into your meals: • Roast vegetables along with whatever entree is in the oven.

• Add fresh cut vegetables into pasta sauce, casseroles, soups, stews and chili.

• Have a salad with dinner most days.

Of greater concern than lean red meat is a regular diet of processed meats. This includes hot dogs, sausages, salami, bologna and bacon. That diet is linked to many adverse health effects.

But I had a couple of grilled hot dogs on the Fourth of July and enjoyed every bite!

Of course, I’m talking only about the health effects of red meat. I understand and respect that many people avoid eating animal meats for ethical reasons. That’s a different matter.

‘They are alive and life goes on’ Dr. Wallace: I’m a single mother and have read your column ever since I was a teenager.

My husband died in an auto accident before our son was born. A drunk driver hit my husband’s car head-on when he was coming home after working a late shift. The drunk driver survived, but he robbed me of my husband and robbed my son of a father.

My son is now 16 and a good boy. Recently, one of his friends was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. To me, this was shocking.

My son assured me that even though several of his friends drink (I didn’t know this), he never has. I believe him, but I wonder if he can continue to “just say no.”

Several years ago, you printed an essay about teens who don’t drink but are pressured by friends who do. Is it possible to reprint that article? “Buddies” ride with us when we are drunk and let us ride with them. They trust our judgment to evaluate our own condition.

The same friends, buddies and pals visit us in the hospital if our drinking results in an accident, but if we “aren’t fun anymore,” they will find new companions.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace If we die from our injuries, they will attend our funeral and sob in shocked disbelief. Then they will toast our life and have a few to ease the pain of our death, but they are alive and life goes on. Friendship?

Dr. Wallace: I spent two weeks in Dallas, Texas, this past summer.

While I was there I met a really nice guy. We went out several times, and we promised to email each other and keep in touch. We planned to see each other next summer after both of us have graduated from high school.

I emailed him first about a week ago. Today, I received a reply from him and he told me that he loved me.

This was a complete surprise to me, but the more I thought about it, the more I think that I might be in love with him, too. Do you think we are just infatuated with each other? – Nameless, Denver, Colorado Dear Nameless: You’re both obviously infatuated with each other, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also be “in love.” Infatuation is the doorway to love. Love is an emotional and spiritual state that is about not only the present moment but also the long term. Infatuation happens all at once; love grows over time. Infatuation fades at the first challenge or difficulty, but love survives and grows stronger.

Finally, if East plays low smoothly, South wins with his ace and, against most opponents, will find the trumps breaking 2-1.
