GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Don’t you just love life’s little surprises? You reach in your coat pocket and find a forgotten $5 bill. Yay! You run into an old friend at the grocery store. Yippee! You water your houseplant, and a lizard pops out of the soil.

Say wha ... ?

Surprising as it sounds, that’s exactly what happened to a local resident the other day as she tended a plant she’d bought online a few weeks back. I don’t know what type of plant it was, nor from which website it was bought. But I’ll bet my mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria spp.) the plant was produced by a grower in Florida.

How do we know this?

Because the surprise lizard is a brown anole, Anolis sagrei, a small, nonnative species introduced to south Florida from the Caribbean in the late 1880s.

Finding the Sunshine State to its liking, little A. sagrei steadily advanced northward and today can be found in nearly every region in Florida, as well as assorted locales in Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.

Such expansion is quite an accomplishment for a reptile that, fully grown, measures just over 8 inches in length.

But the brown anole has several factors working in its favor.

Its generalist diet includes a wide variety of insects, spiders and other invertebrates – all of which are in abundant, year-

round supply. It thrives in disturbed landscapes – another feature Florida has in abundance. Perhaps most important, this species gets moved around a lot by people. Some of this movement is intentional, as folks often keep brown anoles as pets. But much is accidental, with the lizards getting transported as stowaways in boats and firewood.

And houseplants. Thanks to a reproductive strategy that includes laying eggs one or two at a time, in soft, moist soil, brown anoles have found ideal habitat among the many greenhouses and outdoor growing plots that dot the Florida landscape. Lay an egg, move along. A week or so later, lay another egg and move along. All summer long.

Female brown anoles are capable of laying 15 to 18 eggs per breeding season. That number doesn’t seem like a lot, until you consider the advantage of this one-at-a-time approach. It’s almost as if the brown anole heard the adage, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and decided, then and there, “Alrighty then, I won’t!”

Just as wise investors diversify their portfolios, lest one company should fail, brown anoles spread their offspring around. Sure, one egg here or there may be predated, infected or crushed, but chances are good that at least some of the offspring will survive.

Compare this strategy to certain other lizard species that deposit all their eggs in a single clutch. One visit by a predator, one big rush of floodwater, and it’s bye-bye

Related to the Carolina anole – the lizard that changes color from green to brown, and used to be labeled “Chameleon” in pet stores across the country – the brown anole has a blunter nose and, often, irregular patterns of spots, chevrons and light-colored lines. An intense gaze and lively habits only add to its endearing qualities.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, we decided to adopt the little houseplant-borne anole. Although we’re pretty limited on space and enclosures for live animals, we thought this animal would have potential as part of an interpretive display on nonnative species.

Plus, did I mention, the little guy is just darn cute?

Cute, but tiny. When the lizard, clearly a hatchling, arrived at Hickory Knolls it was only about the length of a toothpick – and almost as thin.

Regular misting and a steady diet of fruit flies have had a

positive effect though, and, today, “Baby” is nearly twice as big as when s/he arrived. A few more milligrams of weight and millimeters of length, and the Little Lizard That Could will be ready to educate visitors of all ages about the issues associated with wildlife species that are introduced to areas beyond their native range. If you’re planning a trip to Hickory Knolls sometime soon, keep an eye out for this newest addition. You may think you’re peering into an enclosure filled with filled with random sticks and leaves.

But look a little closer at those small branches ...

Random act of kindness turns into day of paying it forward

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The morning coffee rush began at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at the 7-Eleven at 621 W. State St. in Geneva, but there was a twist: a customer had given $100 to owner Therese Davison to treat the morning customers to free coffee. And the customer wanted to be anonymous.

“The first customer came in,” Davison said. “I said, ‘Have a fabulous day. Your coffee has been bought by an anonymous person.’ He had money to pay for his coffee purchase. ... He handed me the $2, and he said, ‘Could you please buy the next person their purchase when they come up?’ ” The next person who bought coffee gave her $5 to put toward the next person’s purchase.

“So then Patrick [Lencioni] and I were both dueling on the cash registers, and as it was happening, people were just completely, completely amazed,” she said.

Nearly all of them would either turn around and pay for the next customer’s item – chips, doughnuts, sandwiches, energy drinks – or they handed her the cash and said to give it to the next customer.

And so it went for the next 12 hours. The anonymous benefactor’s gift of $100 worth of free coffee turned into $400 to $500 worth of paying-it-forward purchases involving about 800 people, Davison said.

“It was the coolest thing,” Davison said. “People think that everybody’s hearts have gotten harder and gotten greedy ... and just to see that act of generosity passed on and passed on. It was great.”

Davison owns two other 7-Eleven stores, one at Fargo Boulevard and Randall Road in Geneva and one at 1705 W. Main St. in St. Charles.

“In 24 years, I have never had this happen before,” she said. “You read about people paying it forward, and [when] you see random acts of kindness ... it warms your heart. ... From one little person ... to affect a customer count of 800 people, it really is humbling, and you just feel that we have the nicest people in our community.”

Davison said the customer who started it has not been in this week.

“I can’t wait to see him,” Davison said. “There’s so many things I want to tell him. I just want to let him know that he affected hundreds of people’s lives.”

They often split along party lines on issues asked by a Shaw Media Editorial Board, such as the Affordable Care Act. When they did find common ground, such as the need to rein in and start paying down the nation’s $17.8 trillion national debt and reforming the tax code, they differed on the fix.

Roskam said the tax code, last overhauled in 1986, has become “riddled with loopholes, carve outs and crony capitalism,” and favors simplifying it on top of cutting government waste and balancing the federal budget.

“Our tax code is so broken that American companies are

fleeing the country, moving their headquarters overseas to escape the record high taxes they face here in the U.S. I strongly support eliminating loopholes and carve outs to create a flatter, fairer tax system for individuals so families can keep more of their hard-earned money and fundamentally reforming the corporate tax code to keep and grow American jobs,” Roskam said.

While Mason agrees reforming the tax code will improve the economy and therefore increase tax revenue, he also said a reduction of expenditures needs to be paired with increased revenue sources.

“The tax code needs to be analyzed, and such things as $4 billion subsidies to industries that are already making billion dollars in profits needs to be eliminated,” Mason said. “Other provisions, such as carried interest, need to be analyzed to see if it really does add to the economy or just creates windfalls for already wealthy fund manag-

ers. I believe further analysis would lead to additional tax revenues that would also help reduce the debt.”

Roskam and Mason also agree the nation’s immigration system needs to be fixed, but differed on how to do it.

Mason favored the reform bill passed in the Democrat-controlled Senate that has not been taken up in the House.

“This is a comprehensive bill that was designed to secure the border, modernize and streamline the system and provide some type of a legalization system for those already in the country,” Mason said. “This bill was passed on a bipartisan basis in the Senate, but again the current Congress has let the American people down and will not even consider the bill.”

Roskam said he favors addressing what he called a humanitarian crisis by being serious about border security, followed by smaller, targeted legislation aimed at bringing illegal immigrants into legal compliance, streamlining visas for highly skilled workers

and granting seasonal permits for agricultural workers.

“If we work through small bills that fix targeted problems, we will succeed in creating a smarter, more effective immigration system in a way that is transparent and easily understood,” Roskam said. “One thing we have seen time and again is that one big comprehensive bill just provides excuses to hide bad policy and produces a bad outcome.”

Roskam and Mason split on the controversial federal Common Core state standards initiative for public schools.

Roskam said he is skeptical of Common Core and what he called a “one-size-fits-all approach dictated by the federal government,” and favors reform through school choice, charter schools and tuition vouchers. Mason said he supports Common Core and other standardization systems.

He added the system must be consistently re-evaluated and adequately funded, while avoiding “teaching to just pass a test.”

8 Batavia couple facing felony charges after robbery

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Two 21-yearold Batavia residents face felony charges after robbing an acquaintance, according to the Batavia Police Department.

Tanner J. Smith and Desiree L. Smith, both of the 700 block of North Van Buren Street, have been charged with robbery, a Class 2 felony; mob action, a Class Tanner 4 felony; and J. Smith two counts of battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

Batavia Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said the S m i t h s a r e Desiree not related L. Smith but are in a romantic relationship. They reportedly approached a 16-year-old former acquaintance shortly before 8 p.m. Oct. 7.

The teen was walking in the 1000 block of Pine Street in Batavia when a small black vehicle containing the Smiths pulled up alongside her, Mazza said. The Smiths exited the

car and immediately attacked her, Mazza said. During the assault, he said, Desiree Smith forcibly removed a bag of marijuana from the girl.

The couple then returned to the vehicle and left the scene.

Officers reportedly searched the area but were unable to find the Smiths or their vehicle. The Smiths were, however, located Thursday. Mazza said they were taken to the police department for processing and were transferred to the Kane County Jail late that night.

According to online records for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the Smiths remained in custody Friday.

Bail was listed as $10,000 for Desiree Smith and $12,500 for Tanner Smith.

Mazza said the teen was not seriously injured in the attack. She was treated and released at the scene by medics, he said. He noted issues regarding her possession of marijuana are being handled within the police department.

With juveniles, Mazza said, the goal is to change behavior, not necessarily bog down the court system. In a juvenile shoplifting case, for example, police can send the case to court or can deal with it inhouse by such measures as community service, he said.

• A 2014 Nissan Altima was hit by a rock Friday, Oct. 10, while being driven on the 2000 block of Bent Tree Drive.

According to reports, the driver heard a thump, and when the car was examined, it had a dent in the rear driver side door with gray chalky substance on it.

Police found a rock with the same light chalky substance on it, theorizing that someone threw the rock that caused the dent.

Pouley to become ‘rustic road’

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Pouley Road is on the verge of becoming Kane County’s fourth rustic road, as two Kane County Board committees unanimously recommended approval of the status this week.

“This is our version of a historic district,” said Julia Thavong, Kane County preservation planner.

Pending County Board approval on Nov. 10, the rustic road status would apply to the portion of Pouley Road between Keslinger and Hughes roads in Blackberry Township.

In presentations to the Transportation and Development committees, Thavong listed some of the road’s features, including views of Johnson’s Mound, wildlife and two landmarked farmsteads – the Pouley Estate and Blackberry Creek Farm.

Board member Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, noted many high school students will get their picture taken on Pouley Road.

“It’s absolutely gorgeous,” she said.

With the area expected to grow in the future, board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said the rustic road status will help retain the character of the corridor.

“Excellent work,” he said.

But it wasn’t without its obstacles.

The process for establishing Pouley Road as a rustic road began in 2006, when residents submitted an application. Thavong said the process encountered some bumps, including an annexation that made it necessary to create an intergovernmental agreement between the county and Elburn.

“I’m all for this,” said board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn. “It’s not an easy thing to do.”

Registration will begin at 1 p.m. The 5K walk along the Fox River will start at 2:15 p.m. The route begins and ends at the church. Organizers are aiming for more than 150 walkers and hope to raise $25,000.

A portion of the funds raised will go to Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, Lazarus House, the Salvation Army Tri-City Corps and Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Since 1988, walkers in the Tri-Cities have raised $765,000.

“I talked to residents in the area, and many of them are concerned about noise and traffic,” Hanna said. “I think the gem of Settler’s Hill is our beautiful golf course and the hills. We could make Settler’s Hill a more family-friendly place to go.”

Martin said plans for Settler’s Hill redevelopment will be changing over the next decade, but as a public amenity, it “is an opportunity for an economic boost for the area.”

Martin said creating an NCAA-qualified track would not mean it would be limited in its use.

“It’s meant to meet their qualifications,” Martin said.

“I don’t think the confusion is intended, but this is not a facility for NCAA usage. ... It is a public amenity.”

Hanna said the county has to keep half of the enterprise money in the fund at all times because Waste Management will need access to its methane pipes in the landfill at all times.

“I just have a feeling that we might run out of money for the fill, 200,000 yards of fill to build a $1 million NCAA championship cross country track. ... We could be going over the enterprise fund, and then we’ll be asking taxpayers to pick up the bill,” she said. “That’s some-

thing I’d like to avoid.”

In response to a question about board members being paid per meeting instead of as a stipend, Martin said, “The devil is in the details.”

“Kendall County is going through ... a great abuse of their per-diem arrangements,” Martin said. “If a board member is not fulfilling his obligations and not attending meetings, and not doing what he should be doing, he should be un-elected.”

Martin said he would not take a pension or insurance if he is elected.

Hanna said she was not seeking election for the money, but to serve her community.

“I don’t know about a per-meeting rate. I don’t know how that would work,” Hanna said. “I am for getting rid of pensions for part-time County Board members.”

ST. CHARLES – Democrat Martha Hanna and Republican John Martin are seeking to fill the District 11 seat on the Kane County Board, facing each other in the Nov. 4 election.

The candidates spoke Wednesday at a League of Women Voters of Kane County forum held at the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

Martin said he has attended meetings for a year to learn about the Kane C o u n t y Board. Martin is a 42year resident of Geneva.

“As I bec o m e m o r e Martha Hanna educated, I get more excited about serving this district,” Martin said.

Martin also has a b a c k g r o u n d John Martin in serving on the Geneva Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals, where he also served as chairman.

He also served on the Homes for a Changing Region study involving North Aurora, Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles,

analyzing what the housing needs will be in the next 40 years.

Hanna, a 25-year resident of Batavia Township, said she has served as an election judge, a tutor in the Challenge Program at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center, a CASA volunteer and as a special-education professional.

Hanna said she was among the homeowners who stopped development of a Ravinia-style outdoor concert venue at Settler’s Hill landfill, which called for a mountain bike path through Fabyan East Forest Preserve, an area she said includes some of the oldest oak trees in Kane County.

“Development of Settler’s Hill is a big issue for District 11,” Hanna said. “I am proud to say I was one of those residents active in removing those portions from the plan.”

Hanna said she favored the promise of redeveloping the landfill as a recreational amenity for the residents of the county. In particular, Hanna objects to the NCAA cross-country track proposed for the now-closed landfill.

Hanna said the track would be of interest only to a portion of the community, and she prefers separate grass trails developed for walking and running, and bike paths that would be of

Estranged husband faces stalking charges KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – A Wayne Township man was charged with felony stalking after police said he followed his estranged wife in a car, struck her car from the rear, and kept following her.

Mark A. Boelkens, 46, of the 3N600 block of Lo- Mark A. cust Avenue, Boelkens Wayne Township, was charged Oct. 11 with stalking to cause fear for one’s safety and stalking to cause a person distress, both Class 4 felonies

punishable by one to three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

Boelkens also was charged with two traffic offenses – leaving the scene of an accident with damage to an attended vehicle and following too closely.

According to police reports, Boelkens’ wife was with a friend, leaving from the Randall 15 movie theater in Batavia at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 10, when she saw her estranged husband waiting on Mill Street for them to leave.

She drove onto Mill, and he began following her, even as she turned on Randall Road, then turned east on Fabyan Parkway, speeding up to get away from him, according to

police reports.

At East Fabyan Parkway and Raddant Road, Boelkens’ car hit the rear of his wife’s car, but she kept driving and called 911, according to reports. At Fabyan and Enterprise Drive in West Chicago, she made a U-turn because Boelkens was attempting to pass and cut her off, police reported.

She drove west to Kirk Road and made another U-turn going east on Fabyan, with Boelkens following the entire time, according to reports.

Illinois governor: Rauner Gov. Pat Quinn has had more than five years to guide Illinois toward a brighter fiscal future.

Instead, his incompetent leadership and regressive policies have driven the state to the brink of financial collapse.

To that point: Illinois is bleeding jobs.

State data released last month show there are 102,000 fewer Illinoisans in the workforce now than when Quinn, a Democrat, took office in 2009.

That’s good for worst in the country. Illinois also is the only state in the Midwest in which food stamp enrollment has outpaced job creation – and by a 2-to-1 margin – since the Great Recession – again under Quinn’s watch.

Illinois has the worst credit rating of any state in the nation, meaning it pays more in interest when borrowing money. Under Quinn, national ratings agencies have downgraded the state’s credit

rating 13 times. The state’s bonds are near “junk” status.

Illinois also has a worstin-the-nation public pension deficit of $100 billion and growing. Almost a quarter of every dollar that state government collects annually from taxpayers goes toward retirement benefits, not services. Quinn stood on the sidelines as lawmakers worked on pension reform last year, offering no solution of his own to the state’s most pressing issue. The solution ultimately arrived at now appears likely to be thrown out in court, putting reform efforts back to square one.

Deadbeat state government owes social service agencies, school districts and other employers about $5 billion for work completed months ago.

Illinois’ worker’s compensation costs are fourth worst in the U.S., driving businesses and jobs elsewhere.

Quinn and Democratic

state lawmakers also foisted a 67 percent income tax increase on wage earners in 2011, costing a household with an annual income of $50,000 an additional $1,000 in taxes. Quinn promised it would be temporary, but he now wants to make it permanent. He also wants to introduce a graduated income tax – another jobs killer.

Simply put, Quinn’s tenure as governor has been a complete failure.

By contrast, Republican nominee for governor Bruce Rauner is a success story.

A self-made millionaire, he helped build a startup investment firm into one of the most successful businesses in the state.

Rauner’s wealth was not given to him. He earned it.

Yet Quinn, a lifelong politician, holds that against him.

Success should be lauded, not vilified.

Because he is independently wealthy, Rauner will not

be beholden to the special interests that have helped corrupt Springfield. He said he will stand up to public employee union leaders who have fought tooth-and-nail against reform. He said he also will fight corruption and cronyism, which have thrived under Quinn in state government agencies such as the Department of Transportation and the Department of Agriculture.

Rauner understands that the state’s taxpayers are overburdened. He wants to phase out the Quinn income tax hike over four years, freeze property taxes and shrink state government. He also wants to reduce the overall number of governmental bodies in Illinois.

Rauner pledges to be an active governor and live in Springfield. Unlike Quinn, Rauner said he will be on the floor working legislation every day the General Assembly is in session.

Rauner also is not a career politician; this is his first run for office. He supports term limits and, if elected, said he would serve at most two terms.

Rauner admits he does not have all the answers. He understands that Illinois’ financial situation is so dire, he will need help. He vows to surround himself with talented people whose focus will be righting the state’s fiscal ship, not political cronies looking for more taxpayer-funded handouts.

Rauner doesn’t need this job. He said he’s running because he believes in Illinois and wants to make it a better place to live.

SOUND OFF

This year seems to be the year for negative campaigning, particularly with the Democratic party’s gubernatorial candidate. Apparently, he can think of nothing positive to say about himself, so he spends his time ripping the Republican candidate for governor. And now we have Willie Mayes, the Democratic candidate for sheriff, dredging up an incident that happened 34 years ago in Republican Don Kramer’s career.

They’re not all like that

It’s ridiculous I’m calling about the property taxes and seniors being driven out of their houses. Perhaps it’s time that our laws change, and people who have children out of the schools for a long time, which could be 10 years, 15 years, 20 years, the portion of their property tax that goes to the schools be changed, so maybe only a quarter of the property tax that they would normally pay to the schools, they pay. The schools should be getting the money from the people who are actually using the schools. To make up for the money, maybe the people who are renting and sending their children to school should be taxed.

It’s ridiculous that the elderly are being forced out of their homes for a fee that they’re not even using.

Is that worth it?

We all hear about seniors this and that, complaining from the middle aged. OK, middle aged, how mortgaged are you? You probably buy everything in the store that you cannot afford. We, as seniors, have our own homes. No, we do not make what you make, $50,000, $60,00 or $75,000, $100,000 or more. But we are not in foreclosure. We own our own homes. We don’t have the latest gadgets. We don’t keep up

with other people. We live our lives, and we are happy and less stressed.

Then, when we pass away, you’ll want our home. But you complain about the seniors so much. Cut back on your stuff. Your kids don’t need anything that is new. Do you want to be mortgaged to the hills? Lose your homes? Have Bulls tickets? Yes, my grandson has Bulls season tickets.

Do you know what that costs? He’s working two jobs. My daughter-inlaw is working one full-time, plus job.

Is that worth it?

While lower taxes would sound great, I think there is a cost in the long run. Fox River seems to spend a lot of time justifying a huge debt.

I think the debt, the way they are managing things, is only going to get bigger. At some point, someone has to pay for that debt, and it will be the taxpayer. They will raise

taxes sooner or later. My guess is sooner. Elburn has a third station now in Lily Lake, and their service is much better than Fox River’s. …

Elburn has done a great job with keeping everyone safe, has used good fiscal judgement, has better equipment, better response times, no debt. The no-brainer is voting no to the disconnect.

They don’t need everything Yet another chapter in the ongoing debacle about Batavia High School. They only have 46 acres because they have used up so much area for a field house and a fine arts building that weren’t that necessary. Maybe the powers to be should have thought of these things. Kids need good teachers and a safe environment. They do not have to have everything. Vote no.

The school taxes are bleeding us due to irresponsible spending and a lack of competent planning.

Borders need to be secured I am hoping that those in government are coming to their senses soon about protecting our United States borders. There have been three warnings already that we should pay attention to. The first, of course, was the 9/11 attack in New York City. The second was the current ISIS threat that may be coming to the United States. Thirdly, now I am concerned about illnesses, in particular, the Ebola virus needs to be contained. And I suspect there is another virus, I think it’s called enterovirus, affecting children across the country. Please consider securing our borders, and I don’t mean immigration reform, which might be the opposite of what I’m speaking about. Our borders need to be secured. Our citizens need to be protected. And our laws need to be enforced.

We still have less than a month to go to election time, and indirectly, we taxpayers are paying big bucks.

building open house set KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Residents are invited to celebrate the completion of the new Biosolids and Operations Building at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant in St. Charles, according to a news release.

An open house will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the building, at 1405 S. 7th Ave. in St. Charles.

The new building replaces the previous structure that dated to the 1930s, and had several modifications performed on it over the years, the release states. Aging equipment also was replaced with more efficient technology.

“The new building showcases state-of-the-art equipment, improved process efficiency and energy-saving practices for wastewater treatment,” John Lamb, the city’s environmental services manager, wrote in the release. “Everyone is invited to come to the open house to learn more.”

‘We’ve been dreaming of this’ Batavia closes in on River title after beating Geneva

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia football players stormed onto the Bulldog Stadium field wearing all black, the most absorbent color there is.

Maybe that explains why, after all the daydreaming, pregame speeches and hoopla surrounding the annual showdown with Geneva, some of the final bits of bedlam still were hard to comprehend Friday night.

Batavia all but assured its fourth consecutive outright Upstate Eight Conference River Division title with a 26-20 win against its century-old rival. The stadium went relatively quiet as the postgame meetings and revelry subsided, and the few Bulldogs who weren’t engaged in conversation stood and grinned.

“We’ve been dreaming of this since we were little kids,” Bulldogs senior cornerback Eddie Golden said. “To beat Geneva for a conference title as seniors.”

Batavia (7-1, 6-0 UEC River) intercepted Vikings senior quarterback Daniel Santacaterina five times en route to handing the Vikings (7-1, 5-1) their first blemish of the fall.

Safety Nick Bernabei and defensive lineman Josh Leonhard returned their picks for touchdowns. Joey Gross’ interception set the Bulldogs up inside the red zone “Defensive line and our linebackers,” said Golden, who snagged two of the interceptions. “They get pressure on [Santacaterina], he’s throwing off his back foot, and we can make plays. Without them, we couldn’t have made those plays.”

Despite its struggles in the Vikings’ fourth straight loss in the series, Geneva still had a chance to at least tie the game in the closing minutes.

“You can’t play against two teams, and we were playing against ourselves,” Vikings coach Rob Wicinski said.

“More power to them, though.

They made plays when they needed to.”

A dazzling stretch of three touchdowns in 57 seconds early in the fourth quarter provided the requisite flashiness after miscues and inefficiency highlighted the game’s first 36 minutes.

Bulldogs junior running back Zach Garrett atoned for two first-half fumbles on Batavia’s go-ahead drive, rushing four times for 29 yards, including the go-ahead, oneyard run that snapped a 14-all tie with 11:54 to play.

“I fumbled twice earlier in

the game, and I was just telling myself, ‘Keep two hands on the ball, and the linemen will open the holes for me,’ ” Garrett said. “I just kept going, and I didn’t fumble again.”

Leonhard rumbled in for his pick-six on the Vikings’ next possession, and the Bulldogs ultimately withstood Justin Taormina’s 85-yard kickoff return TD that immediately followed.

“It was just thinking about this was our senior season, we’ve got to finish this,” defensive lineman Jake Hlava said. “I would have so many regrets if we didn’t finish this.

We just played our heart out.”

The teams combined for six turnovers – three apiece – in the first half, not including surrendering the ball on downs.

True to form, both the Bulldogs and Vikings were guilty there, although Geneva arguably derived the most momen-

tum from Batavia’s near-miss gutsiness.

Leading, 14-0, with the ball on Geneva’s 40 early in the second quarter, the Bulldogs went for it on 4th-and-1, sending hulking fullback/defensive end Noah Frazier into the line. A host of Vikings arrived on the scene simultaneously, led by defensive linemen Stephen Kemp and Jack McCloughan.

Geneva scored two plays later, as running back Taormina raced 29 yards for a touchdown after Santacaterina and Mike Landi connected for a 31-yard gain.

There was 7:06 left in the second quarter then, and 4:47 remaining when Santacaterina and Jack Wassel connected for a 25-yard score.

Ultimately, 25 was a more significant figure for the Bulldogs, who now have won that many conference games in a row.

also picked off Santacaterina, a Northern Illinois recruit who in no way is accustomed to being treated this rudely.

“We were just really clicking tonight, everybody,” said Golden, a senior cornerback.

“Our defensive line, that goes out to them a lot. They were getting him pressured all the time. He threw it up and we went and got it.”

One of those D-linemen, Leonhard arguably turned in the signature moment for Batavia’s defense, though there were many candidates.

With Geneva trailing, 2014, early in the fourth quarter, Leonhard gobbled Santacaterina’s pass at the line of scrimmage and ran about 45 yards to paydirt to give the Bulldogs their first two-possession lead since the 7:06 mark of the second quarter.

Leonhard said he figured Santacaterina’s pass would sail over his head, but the 6-foot-2 end showed terrific reflexes with little time to react.

Bulldog Stadium must feel booby-trapped to Santacaterina, who has enjoyed ample success at just about every other venue.

Two years ago, as a sophomore, Santacaterina’s season was cut short when a sack by former Bulldog Marquise Jenkins resulted in a broken collarbone. While that night was surely more painful physically, this one packed an emotional wallop.

Geneva coach Rob Wicinski expressed faith that Santacaterina can move beyond Friday’s uncharacteristic turmoil.

“His mind wasn’t too far off,” Wicinski said. “He need-

ed to get rid of a few of those down the stretch. I’m going to go back and look, but he put some BBs in there. I thought he threw some nice passes.

“He’s a Santacaterina. He’s nasty. He’ll be fine. He grew up in this stuff.”

Wicinski recently said Batavia-Geneva games are so emotionally charged they tend to come down to whichever team makes the fewest mistakes. After Friday’s six-turnover outing for his previously undefeated Vikings, he joked that assessment might have been a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It wasn’t just the rash of turnovers – the Bulldogs were guilty of three of their own – that made for a weird night.

Wicinski provided example No. 728 that he really, really loathes punting the football, allowing Santacaterina to attempt a QB sneak on fourthand-1 from the Vikings’ own 15 a minute before halftime.

Batavia stuffed the play, undoubtedly prompting

muttering from even the most ardent of Wicinski’s supporters, but Geneva senior Pace Temple bailed out his coach, intercepting Batavia’s subsequent second down pass for the whopping sixth turnover of the first half, three apiece.

That kept the score tied at 14 at halftime, and it was anyone’s game as late as the closing minutes, when Geneva moved into Batavia territory before a sack and late penalties sealed the Vikings’ fate.

There would be no Hollywood ending for Geneva as Batavia seized its fourth straight win in the series.

In a highly entertaining game that was there for the taking for either team, the Bulldogs’ defense plucked the game – and the conference championship – right out of the air.

Berango, a junior, rushed for over 200 yards against Genoa-Kingston this year. Some highlights as running back in five games include 8 touchdowns, 12 point conversion, 79 rushes for 547 total yards, and 6 catches for 45 yards.

Jordan is a junior standout for the Lady Saints Swim Team. She is the team’s top 200 IM and 100 Backstroke swimmer and was a State Finalist in those two events last year.

BATAVIA – Eddie Golden stood on a wet, soggy field after the defining moment of Batavia football’s season, and allowed himself a moment to drink it in.

The Bulldogs had just defeated archrival Geneva, 2620, on Friday in a game that will extend Batavia’s Upstate Eight Conference River supremacy another year.

“This atmosphere with the rain, it was just out of a movie,” Golden said. “It really is, just out of a movie – 26-20, so close to the very end.”

Golden and his ball-hawking Bulldogs teammates turned this movie into a horror show for Geneva quarterback Daniel Santacaterina and the Vikings. Golden had two of five Batavia interceptions on the night – two of the picks were returned for touchdowns – as the Bulldogs turned Geneva’s vaunted passing game into a major liability.

North was forced to punt on their first possession of the second quarter but East fumbled on the return and North’s Jordan Bergren recovered the ball on the Saints’ 33-yard line.

“We really got them going early by some mistakes we made,” Farquhar said. “We gave them some short field positions a few times.”

On the next play, North Star quarterback Nathan Didier connected with Blake Kastein on a 33-yard TD pass.

North scored on its next possession to take a 28-0 lead at halftime – a 32-yard pass to

Kyle Novotney and 16-yard toss to Kastein. Didier completed 10 of 14 passes for 199 yards.

The Saints finally earned a first down in the third quarter but still were not able to sustain any drives. Sophomore quarterback Zach Mitchell finished the night completing 7 of 17 passes for 68 yards.

A fourth TD pass in the third quarter put North up 35-0 – a 32-yarder from Didier to Tyler Mettatal.

North scored its final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Billy Duhownik.

The win snapped East’s six-year winning streak in the crosstown series.

The Cadets rushed for 436 yards and eight scores on the ground, with seven different players recording touchdowns.

Senior Jordan Glasgow and junior Nathan Traxler led the way for Marmion, rushing for 106 and 105 yards, respectively. Both added scores, with Glasgow finding the end zone twice late in the second quarter.

Cadets quarterback Russell Joyce, Jr. had a quiet night with a light rain falling all evening, only attempting one pass in the game.

Joyce Jr. said his offensive line enabled the rushing attack to be consistently efficient throughout the game.

“It just all starts up front,” Joyce Jr. said. “We’ve got an insane, great offensive line.

They’ve been working hard ever since the offseason and I think it’s a major tribute to them being able to put 56 up without even having to pass the ball. Lucas Warren, Jordan Glasgow, Nathan Traxler, they’re just beasts of running backs.”

Marmion (6-2) coach Dan Thorpe was proud of his team’s resolve after playing a difficult schedule and was happy to be healthy at the right time.

“Football still is a numbers game,” Thorpe said.

“You can have great talent from two or three (guys) but it takes 11 on both sides of the ball for 48 minutes and obviously we wore them down.

The biggest thing is we’re getting better each week and we’re healthy. At this point in the season that’s the key.

It’s not always how good you are but how healthy you are.

Aurora Christian (4-4) quarterback Austin Bray was injured on the first play of the second quarter, reinjuring a nagging issue with his left ankle.

Bray did not return to the game, though coach Dave Beebe said his quarterback wanted to be on the field.

Beebe credited Marmion for being better and said he expects Bray to play in next week’s pivotal matchup against Chicago Leo. “We had trouble doing just about everything tonight but that’s a credit to Marmion; they’re a nice program,” Beebe said. “They played us well and were definitely better than us tonight.

It would take Austin to have three or four broken legs to not play in that game and that’s not going to happen.

I’m not worried about that.

“We’re in a position where, in our minds, the playoffs start next week. You get a home game first week of the playoffs, that’s what we’re worried about.”

Nick Edlund led the way for the Eagles offense, rushing for 64 yards on 15 carries in the first half.

The remaining starters were pulled at the half with the Eagles trailing, 35-0.

“There’s just relentlessness on this team and that wins,” Edlund said. “Even though we suffered a tough loss tonight our eyes are forward and we feel good about things. We’ve just got to move on.”

Kaneland cruises past LaSalle-Peru Knights score 37 consecutive points in win

The Knights scored their first touchdown on the second play from scrimmage, scored

37 consecutive points and never looked back in a 58-6 win over the Cavaliers.

“I feel really good about how we played tonight,” Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said. “We have lost so many close games and we didn’t want them to get them all Connor wrapped up Fedderly into that. We wanted to come here and play a good game and feel good about ourselves.”

BURLINGTON – Through seven games, the Burlington Central football team had little trouble scoring.

Before Friday night, the Rockets were averaging 27 points a contest, including more than 30 in their five conference wins. The offense was clicking.

But they ran into trouble against Johnsburg, falling 7-0, marking their first loss since stumbling at Dixon in early September.

For Johnsburg (7-1, 6-0), the win guarantee a share of the Big Northern Conference East Division. For Central (52, 5-1), its only hope to earn a share would be with a win next week against Rockford Christian, coupled with a Johnsburg loss.

After giving up a 32-yard touchdown run to Bailey Stefka on the game’s opening drive Friday, the Rockets struggled to respond and get their own offense moving.

They were held to minus-1 yard of total offense in the first two quarters.

In the second half, though, they still had their chance. Se-

nior quarterback Adam Skirmont, who didn’t complete a pass until the third quarter, engineered a long early fourth quarter drive. Completing five straight passes, including four to senior running back Trevor Davison, to bring them into the red zone. But even on a third-and-goal at the twoyard line, they came up empty on two straight running plays.

Skirmont and the Rockets had another chance late, but Johnsburg cornerback Nick Brengman deflected a pass on fourth down, and the Skyhawks ran out the clock.

St. Francis 33, De La Salle 14: At Chicago, St. Francis clinched a playoff berth behind two interception returns for touchdowns from Matt Hanson.

The Spartans improved to 6-2 (2-1 Chicago Catholic Green) and have surrendered just 80 points, by far the fewest in the league.

“Another unbelievable performance by our defense,” Spartans coach Mike Fitzgerald said. “The defense really has been lights-out.”

Riverside-Brookfield 40, Aurora Central Catholic 28: At Riverside, ACC (5-3, 1-3 Metro Suburban West) missed

a chance to clinch a playoff berth. It was the Chargers’ first road loss in five games.

Wheaton Academy 24, Fenton 14: At West Chicago, Wheaton Academy became playoff-eligible, improving to 5-3 and 1-3 in the Metro Suburban West.

Camden Meade rushed 25 times for 130 yards for the Warriors, while quarterback David Thrasher finished 11 for 17 for 207 yards and a score.

Made added 11 tackles and an interception defensively, with Chase Martin contributing 10 tackles.

The Warriors can clinch a playoff berth when they host Aurora Central Catholic to close the regular season next week.

IHSA GIRLS GOLF STATE MEET

Each athlete followed an older sister’s footsteps to Hickory Point and is making her state debut.

Kurosky continues a whirlwind week. She initially was scheduled to be part of a Tues-

day playoff at the Conant Sectional at Fox Run in Elk Grove Village after all other scores were determined Monday.

She was early in the stages of the commute from home to Fox Run when she learned the playoff had been canceled due to unplayable conditions.

All four would-be participants were state-bound.

“I wasn’t necessarily nervous, I was just very unhappy,” Kurosky said. “So when we got the call, I was very excited and it was a miracle, kind of. So it was great.”

The first day of the IHSA Class 3A state boys golf meet didn’t go St. Charles East’s way, but proof of the Saints’ resolve was on display late Friday afternoon.

“I’m looking at the [driving] range right now and the range is filled with mostly Saints,” East coach John Stock said in a phone interview. “A few other people, but a lot of Saints out there that played today, and that’s a positive.”

East – one of 12 team qualifiers in the 3A meet at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington – landed in 11th place heading into today’s final round.

The Saints’ team score of 327 lagged 27 strokes behind leader Hinsdale Central and six shots behind Glenbrook North and Loyola, which were tied for ninth and 10th.

Stock said holes 4 through 9 – the last six holes East played

posted the Saints’ counting scores.

Stock acknowledged vaulting into the team race today is unrealistic but said the goal for today’s final round is clear.

“Show The Den, so to speak, we can play those last six holes because we did not play them well today,” Stock said. “You can’t jump 20 strokes, that’s just not going to happen – I’ve been down here enough to know that, but you do the best you can, come out tomorrow and see what happens.”

Marmion qualifiers Jackson Clark and Nick Huggins each notched rounds of 82, while Batavia junior Andrew Nelson shot an 85.

Maine East senior Orion Yamat (even-par 72) is atop the 3A individual leaderboard.

In the Class 2A meet at Normal’s Weibring Golf Club, St. Francis – the area’s lone team representative – is in seventh place out of 12 teams. The Spartans’ 328 total was 16 strokes

The last time I competed in a triathlon? Wow. I’m trying to think. Proably over two years ago. I think when I was in Europe for the summer two years ago.

Muscle memory can be a big thing for athletes. Do you foresee returning to triathlon coming pretty naturally once you get back into it?

That is really what I’m hoping. I kind of did the same thing when I was younger, because I started triathlons when I was 7, and then was part of a team growing up. … Then in high school, I just decided to do running and took a 2½-year break from triathlon. … So I’m kind of mirroring what I did then now. So I’m hoping it’s not a huge challenge and comes back naturally.

What prompted leaving Colorado-Colorado Springs?

Would you shoot for the international circuit again?

It was actually a really difficult decision, but basically, it just came down to the fact that I couldn’t foresee myself continuing to do triathlon after staying for four years there. I think if I had stuck with it, I probably would have wanted to just end it there.

Plus, Madison is basically two hours door-to-door [from Geneva], it’s a beatiful campus and I’m closer to home. ..

My sister and dad [Taylor and Jim], were both [NCAA] Division I athletes, and they both said there’s nothing like the D-I college experience, and I wanted to experience that for myself.

Ideally, that’s what I would love to do. I know there’s a ton of factors that play into it and, I’m trying not to think too far into the future because so much can change. But ideally I would like to get back to the international circuit. ... But the ultimate goal would be to compete in the Olympics, but since high school, I’ve really learned you have to look at things one year at a time, because planning too far ahead never works.

When’s the last time you biked or swam a triathlon distance?

I have not been on my road bike in a very long time, probably almost a year. And then I got hurt last year during track, so I swam to cross train during that.

Are you still in contact with any old Geneva teammates?

We try to keep in touch.

Everyone’s got really crazy lives, but for the most part, when we meet up, it’s just like old times. ... I feel like when we are in high school we formed a very strong bond just from training together and competing together. ... It’s definitely a friendship that would last, I would assume, our entire lives.

Geneva product Kelly Whitley temporarily has shifted her focus from triathlons to her high school root sports of cross country and track. A Wisconsin senior, Whitley transferred from Colorado-Colorado Springs two years ago after a string of triathlon success that included accolades as USA Triathlon’s Junior Athlete of the Year in 2010 and 2011. Recently hampered by injuries, including a stress fracture in her tibia, Whitley is working to be part of the Badgers’ lineup during the cross country stretch run. Catching up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley, Whitley provided an update for the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat. Here’s an edited transcript:

Oh man. It seems that for several years, my kids have routinely played soccer on synthetic turf fields, the likes of which some now link to cancer. Ugh. Synthetic turf, infilled with that granular synthetic “dirt” made from shredded recycled tires, which sheds little black crumbs that drive me batty because they’re nearly impossible to eradicate from car mats, cleats and even the kids’ hair, is now being touted by a whole host of news outlets as bad news.

Awesome.

The news culminated in an NBC report aired last week that featured Amy Griffin, a coach of the University of Washington women’s soccer team, who said she became alarmed by a comment made by a Seattle nurse during one of her hospital visits with a young goalie five years ago.

“Don’t tell me you guys are goalkeepers,” the nurse said according to the report. “You’re the fourth goalkeeper I’ve hooked up this week.”

According to the report, Griffin then realized that she knew of several soccer players who’d been diagnosed with rare cancers (lymphoma and leukemia dominate the list), so she came forward with her concern that those little black bits might be the culprit.

The news spread and her anecdotal list of cases grew, and now includes dozens of current and former American soccer players, many of whom are goalkeepers, who spend way more time diving on the ground and connecting with those suspicious black bits than do their teammates.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose “Tires are so full of toxic chemicals they have to be disposed of in a special landfill,” said Doug Wood, a founder of Grassroots Environmental Education in New York, when he was interviewed

by News 12 Long Island in 2007. “So why would you grind them up and put them on a field where kids are going to play?”

In their investigation, NBC reported that the international agency for research on cancer stated that at least four carcinogenic chemicals are typically present in recycled tires.

And now Batavians are set to vote, Nov. 4, on a pricey bond measure that would provide for many capital improvements to the district’s schools, including the possible installation of synthetic turf at the high school’s stadium and an adjacent practice field.

Proponents say that such fields drain quickly, making competition cancellations due to heavy rain less likely, but I can’t get past the safety question. And the potential cancer risk isn’t the only health concern turf inspires.

According to a recent CBS report, American soccer phenom Abby Wambach contends that artificial turf’s abrasive nature increases player injuries.

Two weeks ago, CBS also reported that a lawyer representing several of

the biggest playmakers in women’s soccer announced that they had filed a lawsuit at the human rights tribunal of Ontario, seeking to force FIFA and the Canadian Soccer Association to install natural grass for the Women’s World Cup, slated to happen next year in Canada. No major men’s soccer tournament has ever been played on artificial turf, according to the report.

“About a year ago when we heard definitively that they were gonna be playing on actual artificial surface, I kinda came out pretty vocally and said this is an outrage, this is a disgrace,” Wambach told CBS. “The game changes, the ball rolls faster, and it’s less fun as an athlete. It should be grass stains, not blood.”

My daughter’s soccer coach, Alex Nowak, agrees. He says that when his oldest daughter competed on artificial turf at indoor facilities, he spent way more time cleaning nasty abrasions and mopping up blood than coaching soccer.

And now we’re talking a possible link to cancer?

Geneva High School Athletic Director Jim Kafer said during an interview on Friday morning that without checking his records he can’t say for sure whether his turf, installed three years ago, is derived from recycled tires. He does recall, however, that concerns about health, including respiratory concerns, were carefully considered.

Kafer says that after much deliberation, “We were, and are, very confident that the turf is safe.”

According to NBC, several school

districts around the country have canceled its orders for synthetic turf, including Kennedy Catholic High School in Burien, Washington. The school scrapped their plans to use crumb rubber turf after learning about the recent NBC investigation. According to the report, Burien isn’t certain a link to cancer exists, but isn’t taking any chances, and nor should we.

In two weeks, Batavians can vote on the school district’s bond question.

Holly hopes to play high school soccer next year, but I’m putting my foot down if it’s to be played on this stuff. No way, no how.

Did synthetic turf cause cancer among those in coach Griffin’s admittedly anecdotal survey? NBC reports that the Synthetic Turf Council said in a statement, “There is no research directly linking crumb rubber exposure to cancer.”

It may be never be proven, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Isolating the myriad variables is the challenge facing researchers going forward, but what do we do today? We parents have plenty of things over which to lose sleep – but turf doesn’t have to be one of them. Err on the side of caution and find a less questionable material, Batavia. Or, you know, plant some grass. And for pity’s sake, please don’t spray it with weed killer.

Ornamental grasses provide plenty of fall color Fall is often a time of diminishing color and bloom in the garden. Many perennials have petered out by then, and plants grown as annuals are on their last legs. But there is one group of plants that have played a supporting role all season, only to become the stars of fall: ornamental grasses.

We have all seen Miscanthus, the beautiful group of grasses that have been extensively hybridized. Many have sensational fall color, but some are very wide, making gardeners wary. One of the oldest is one of the best. Not too large, Miscanthus sinensis

LEARNING TO GROW Donna Mack “Gracillimus” can be seen in 14th century paintings, is cold tolerant, pretty even without bloom, and easily found.

Sarabande and Graziella, 20th century cultivars, also easily found, are similar. These do not spread by seed in northern Illinois and are all about 6 feet tall before the plumes. For a shorter but similar grass, perhaps 3 feet tall, try Adagio.

For a newer cultivar with

stupendous, slightly earlier bloom, try Huron Sunrise. Said to be the single most floriferous bloomer, it begins to flower in September. Zone 4 hardy, the blooms are a beautiful burgundy.

For those who prefer easily maintained native grasses, Panicum, or switchgrass, is a good choice. Tolerating everything from drought to wet soils, it produces blooms as well.

There are many types, because it is being extensively hybridized. It grows from 3 to 6 feet, with foliage colors from deep green to blue to burgundy. The flowers extend 1 to 2 feet above

the foliage, and the autumn color of the plants varies. The cultivars range from “Northwind,” which is steel blue, to “Shenandoa” a bright red.

Like miscanthus, plants stay upright, despite their height, through winter into spring.

For a shorter ornamental grass, try prairie dropseed (Sporobolis heterolepis), another native grass. Barely 2 feet high, it makes a great edger with blooms extending about 3 feet above the foliage. Some insist that it smells like popcorn and has a long bloom season from August to October.

I have recently discovered

a fall blooming grass with distinctive charm – Eragrostis spectabilis. Only 1 to 2 feet, it is blooming in my garden now.

Extremely drought tolerant, in bloom the flowers are reddish purple, and amongst other things, it is black walnut tolerant. It is blooming now and looks like an explosion. It is also a native species.

For fall color and charm, try ornamental grasses.

ADVICE Woman objects to being called a ‘status digger’ Dear Abby: I have been seeing “Tony” for a few weeks. He is kind, caring and will make a great boyfriend, husband and father someday. My problem with him is he thinks I’m a “status digger.” (It’s similar to a gold digger, but he means I care only about someone’s standing in the community.) His rationale is based on my friendships.

I come from a privileged background. While some acquaintances in my circle are spoiled and superficial, my close friends and I are not. Because I grew up here, it was only natural I’d date guys from a similar background. While I was not opposed to dating outside my social circle, the opportunity never presented itself.

Because he perceives you and your friends as having had so much given to you, he may feel

Of course, that’s stereotyping, and it isn’t fair to you. Because someone comes from inherited status/wealth there is no guarantee that it won’t disappear.

That’s the reason some women prefer self-made men to those from a privileged background.

You and Tony should have a frank talk. When you do, suggest that before he assumes any more preconceptions about you are true, he should get to know you – because if he doesn’t, he will miss out on someone who is not only very nice, but who thinks HE has a lot to offer.

Dear Reader: To prevent cavities and tooth decay, you need to brush away plaque – that sticky, bacteria-laden material that builds up on teeth. It’s best to brush at least twice daily, once after you eat breakfast, and then again before you go to sleep.

Some toothpastes are designed to reduce sensitivity of teeth to heat and cold. It might take a few weeks of using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before you notice any improvement. You can use anti-sensitivity toothpastes that also contain fluoride as your everyday toothpaste.

• Abrasives. When choosing a toothpaste, consider its level of abrasiveness. A little bit of roughness helps remove plaque and stains, but too much can strip away tooth enamel. Using a toothpaste that’s too abrasive can lead to permanent tooth damage, particularly around the gum line. If you don’t smoke and have few stains, a low-abrasive toothpaste is best for you. The American Dental Association (ADA) issues its Seal of Acceptance only for toothpastes that are mild to moderately abrasive.

So, look for the ADA seal of approval on the tube.

• Whiteners. Toothpaste makers have bombarded the marketplace with products that claim

to whiten teeth. All whitening toothpastes contain mild abrasives that help remove surface stains. Whitening toothpastes that display the ADA Seal of Acceptance also have chemical or polishing agents that boost their stain-removal power.

A patient asked me once, “I know you’re not supposed to swallow the toothpaste, but is there any danger if you do?”

Swallowing small amounts of toothpaste, which occasionally happens with all of us, carries no risk. However, some people apparently deliberately swallow larger amounts of toothpaste (don’t ask me why). That can cause problems. The fluoride and the triclosan, in large amounts, can cause abdominal symptoms and even more serious problems, including seizures.

Finally, don’t forget to floss regularly. No matter how thoroughly you brush your teeth, it’s impossible to reach the plaque and food debris that lodge under the gum line between your teeth.
