ne of my favorite things to photograph during the annual Scarecrow Festival in downtown St. Charles is the make-your-own scarecrow area.

Festivalgoers get a chance to

stuff their own man, woman or baby scarecrow with hay using donated clothing.

So, last Friday, after walking a few laps around Lincoln Park and getting a good look at a lot

of the pre-made scarecrows on display, I headed over to the First State Bank Kids Zone area on First Street. That was where I noticed 3-year-old twins Bode and Georgia Smith of St. Charles having an

absolute blast rolling around in the hay, knocking each other over in it and laughing their heads off.

It was awesome. Simple, fall fun.

Books and babies

Early literacy initiatives aim to build readers

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The toddlers and babies in Kathleen Redmond’s Babies and Tots Story Time at the Batavia Public Library were enchanted as they watched her go through rhymes and songs.

“Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?” Redmond read in a sing-song voice, holding up the celebrated children’s picture book so the children could follow along.

Then it was time to stand up and stretch – for those who could – while singing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” accompanied by a CD of Wee Sing for Baby.

Anna Bakker’s daughter, Addison, all of 6 months old, was among the babies at the program.

“We like to read,” said Bakker, a Batavia resident. “We do it all the time. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to read and keep her entertained, so it’s nice when somebody else does it, and I can hold on to her.”

Research shows that reading, talking and singing to babies are important building blocks for developing readers, librarians say. That is why most offer early literacy programs for babies and toddlers.

Taking it a step further, the Batavia Library invested in Born to Read. Officials give a book bag with six board books to parents of babies and expectant parents – and encourage them to read to their babies.

Bakker said she received one of those Born to Read book bags and has been reading to Addison. Bakker said she was not surprised to be encouraged to read to a baby.

“My grandparents and my dad started doing that with me when I was a baby, so I was pretty adamant about doing it,” Bakker said. “They said I started reading a lot quicker than most kids.”

Batavia Library Board member Maureen Jakubowski said she first learned about the program through the Naperville library.

“I just thought [it] was such a great idea,” Jakubowski said. “I talked to people in Naperville and worked hard to get grants and gifts ... when we had our budget, we formed a committee and researched which books would be the best, and we have bags in Spanish and English.”

The bags and books are given out free to parents with new babies who live in the li-

brary district, the school district or city of Batavia, with board books in English and Spanish.

The bags are available for $35 for those who want to buy it as a gift or those who live outside the area.

“We have given out almost 247 bags since we started. in the spring of 2009,” said Joanne Zillman, head of youth services for the Batavia Public Library. “The idea is to build early literacy ... to get parents into the habit of reading to their children right from infancy.”

Just opening and touching the book are precursors to reading, Zillman said.

“Seeing printed text, knowing how a book opens and closes, hearing the voice and the words – these are all the early markers for early literacy,” Zillman said. “These early experiences prepare them for learning.”

Holly Deitchman, station executive director for BATV said she got a Born to Read bag when her son was three months old in 2009.

“I did not know about the other aspects of reading to your child,” Deitchman said.

“There are a lot of other sen-

sory portions that they touch on in the materials, like letting them chew on the book is OK instead of, ‘No don’t put that in your mouth.’ ” The board books in the Born to Read bag are sturdy enough for babies to grab on to, even chew on, and can be wiped clean.

The cost is covered by a combination of support from the library and sponsorships by local organizations, Deitchman said.

“I think it’s a really great community partnership,” Deitchman said.

••• The Geneva Public Library offers a similar early literacy program called Every Child Ready to Read, said Kristi Miller-Pease, head of youth services.

“That is where we get our basis from and where the research is done,” Miller-Pease said. “We also have a table in the youth department with activities that promote reading readiness – games, rhyming words and writing, scribbling and drawing. We change the activities every two weeks.”

Messenger Public Library in North Aurora uses its baby story time to introduce board books for those ages 6 months through 23 months old, said youth services librarian Sheila McNair.

“We’re setting an example for parents with the idea of reading to babies,” McNair said. “They don’t know the alphabet yet, but … we get them acclimated to the idea of reading. This is great for babies and parents, grandparents and nannies.”

The baby-friendly programs have caused increased attendance at all their early literacy programs, McNair said.

“I do think there is something to be said for sitting together with one another that gets them ready for school – even before preschool,” McNair said. “My favorite quote is, ‘Children are made readers in the laps of their parents,’ ” attributed to award-winning children’s author Emilie Buchwald.

Daddio’s Diner to host gathering Monday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Daddio’s Diner will hold a gathering Monday in support of head cook Felipe Cuanetl, whose family members were among those killed over the weekend in a two-car crash in Aurora.

“He is well loved,” Daddio’s Diner owner Scott Beltran said. “People in this town have big hearts.”

The crash occurred about 11:49 p.m. Sunday on Broadway Avenue, south of Hazel

Killed in the crash were Cuanetl’s mother, Andrea Moyotl, 77, and sister, Rosa Cuanetl, 57, both of Montgomery.

According to Aurora police, Oscar Rodriguez, 28, of

Aurora, was driving north on Broadway Avenue, just south of Hazel Avenue, when he apparently crossed into the southbound lanes and hit a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan in which Cuanetl, Moyotl and five

other people occupied, all of whom suffered severe injuries.

Rodriguez was killed in the crash. Several of those injured in the van are Cuanetl’s family members.

Felipe Cuanetl started working at the restaurant 12 years ago, when it was called Kathy’s Diner and owned by Kathy Rapp.

Terry and Scott Beltran purchased the restaurant in 2007.

“Not only do we value his abilities, we value him as a

person,” Scott Beltran said.

The couple will host the gathering from 6 to 8 p.m.

Monday at Daddio’s Diner, 134 W. Wilson St., Batavia, and coffee and refreshments will be served.

A memorial fund also has been set up with BMO Harris Bank for the Cuanetl family.

Anyone can go to any BMO Harris Bank location and ask to give towards the Cuanetl Memorial Fund, which will go toward medical and burial expenses for the family.

Jim Oberweis: ‘90 percent’ sure of run for U.S. Senate

By ED McMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, is “90 percent” sure he’ll run for U.S. Senate next year, his spokesman Ben Marcum said.

Marcum said Oberweis is circulating petitions to run in the Republican primary, but has not yet made an official announcement.

“He’s gotten the blessing of his wife, so that’s the first step,” Marcum said. “I think it would have to take some-

thing pretty extraordinary for him not to do it.”

School board members voted Tuesday to intervene in two property-tax assessment appeals filed with the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board. The appeals were filed by the former owners of Geneva Commons shopping center and Best Buy. In a memo to the school district, school attorney Joshua Whitt said that Invesco

Ltd., which recently sold the 438,000-square-foot shopping center at 602 Commons Drive in Geneva, is seeking an $8.5 million reduction in its 2012 assessed value, which could cost the district $523,000.

“The assessed value placed on the Geneva Commons shopping center by the Kane County Board of Review reflects a fair market value of $90.3 million, and Invesco is advocating a fair market value of only $72.2 million,” Whitt said in the memo.

However, he noted the property was sold last month for $124.5 million, and both the buyer and seller indicat-

ed that the price paid was reflective of market value.

LaSalle Investment Management, the investment unit of Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle Inc., purchased the shopping center.

Best Buy, located at 1876 S. Randall Road in Geneva, also has filed an appeal with the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board.

Best Buy is requesting a $413,435 assessment reduction for 2012.

“If Best Buy were successful in this appeal, it would result in a $25,233 refund from the school district,” Whitt said.

Engineer receives award in Chicago KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Kane County engineer Carl Schoedel was awarded the 2013 Government Civil Engineer of the Year Award at the Illinois Section of the American Society of Engineers annual dinner meeting, which took place Wednesday at Soldier Field in Chicago.

A news release issued by Kane Carl County laud- Schoedel ed Schoedel’s accomplishments. Schoedel played a role in helping to lead the Stearns Road Bridge Corridor project, and the release noted professional guidance he has given to future and junior civil engineers.

He established the first cooperative engineering education program, which provided opportunities for advancement in the profession,

the release stated. Students can alternate semesters of study with “real world” work experience.

Also, Schoedel has been a board member for CASA Kane County, advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system.

Gloria Bunce, executive director of CASA – or Court Appointed Special Advocates – said in the release that Schoedel is “a generous individual that is passionate about giving children a voice to be heard and find permanency.

He is well-deserving of the award of Government Civil Engineer of the Year.”

Chris Lauzen, chairman of the Kane County Board, praised Schoedel as well.

“We are so proud to have Mr. Schoedel on our team,” Lauzen states in the release.

Rebates offered to residents for furnace, air conditioner upgrades KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles electric utility customers who also are Nicor customers are eligible for rebates through an energy efficiency program from the gas company, according to the city of St. Charles.

Rebates are available for residential customers who replace a furnace or boiler with a new energy-efficient model.

The rebates are part of a continuing program sponsored by Nicor.

For a limited time, additional incentives will be given to residents who also replace their central air conditioner unit at the same

time as their furnace.

These rebates are funded through a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The program will cease once the grant money is disbursed.

Thomas Bruhl, electric services manager for St. Charles, said in a news release that this is a great opportunity for residents planning to make these upgrades.

Rebates range from $200 to $400 for furnace replacements and $700 to $1,000 for the combined furnace and air conditioner upgrades.

Bruhl said residents should act quickly if they’re interested because the air conditioning rebates will

be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

“While it probably won’t take long for those funds to be allotted, the Nicor website has a very nice indicator about how much funding is remaining,” he said. “That website should be checked prior to starting.”

The Illinois DCEO grant totals $325,000.

It will be distributed to qualifying residents in St. Charles, Naperville, Winnetka, Princeton, Rantoul, Rock Falls and Farmer City.

The grant is administered by the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency, St. Charles’ wholesale electric supplier.

Milo worked at the Hines VA Hospital from 1969 to 1986 as chief medical electronics inspector, and before that owned Milo’s T.V. Service in Forest Park. He was a World War II veteran in the Army Air Corps and was an member of the American Legion in Forest Park for many years.

GENEVA – June Lencioni, of Geneva, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at the age of 90, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Her passing was peaceful with her family present.

June was born June 24, 1923, in Orchardville, to William and Emilee (Vest) Leathers. In 1927, she and her family moved to Geneva during the depression era. She was the seventh of eight children.

June was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her life revolved around her family core. She was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Geneva, and avid Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan. Among her achievements is being named Secretary of the Year by the Kane County Legal Secretaries Organization. She enjoyed an occasional trip to nearby casinos and was an active bowler until the age of 87. For more than 40 years, she and her husband resided on First Street in Geneva. In 1996, she and her husband, Victor Lencioni, former owner of The Little Owl Restaurant, Geneva, began residence at the home of her daughter, Vicki Mehren. June enjoyed a life of contentment and continual interaction with five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Young artists get ‘professional’ boost Board OKs purchase of students’ artwork

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A dozen young students in Kaneland schools became “professional artists” Wednesday night, as the District 302 Board approved the purchase of work from two students at each school as part of an annual program.

The sixth-grade team room at Harter Middle School was filled with the artists and their friends and families, as the artists showed off their work before handing it off to the district. Most of the work was framed, though one young artist’s work was in the

form of a birdhouse.

“Congratulations on becoming professional artists tonight,” Superintendent Jeff Schuler said, adding the event was “about celebrating achievements in the arts.”

The artwork will be displayed in the hallways of the district’s administrative center, then returned to the individual schools for permanent display.

Each artist stood by the artwork as teachers talked about it. Parents and family members took photos or videos.

GENEVA – The Pure Oil building in the 500 block of West State Street in Geneva will be among nine honorees

by Landmarks Illinois as part of the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation awards, Landmarks Illinois announced in a news release.

The event honors individuals, organizations and projects throughout Illinois that represent excellence in historic preservation, the release stated.

The Pure Oil building was built in 1935 as a service station. It now houses Geneva Bank & Trust, which is managed by St. Charles Bank & Trust. Original plans called for the demolition of the Pure Oil building, but the bank instead renovated that building

and a neighboring structure to accent the historical nature of the structure.

The bank had a Geneva Bank & Trust sign made in the style of the Pure Oil sign.

Other winners include the Randolph Tower in Chicago, Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville, Harper Theater in Chicago, Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail in Columbia, Livingston County Courthouse in Pontiac, Pomeroy Apartments in Chicago, a Walgreens store in Chicago and Washington Square Apartments in Moline.

City offers grants to beautify corridors

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Property owners along the city’s major thoroughfares can get a financial boost from St. Charles for certain improvement projects.

The St. Charles Corridor Improvement Commission is offering 50/50 matching grants for landscape and streetscape improvements at properties with frontage along Kirk Road, Randall Road, Main Street

and Route 38, planner Matt O’Rourke said.

“It’s a beautification grant,” he said. “The city’s really trying to invest in our major corridors to make it attractive for everybody.”

This year, $25,000 has been allotted to the program and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, O’Rourke said.

He noted the program was briefly suspended during the economic downturn.

GENEVA – For the fourth straight year, the number of landowners in Kane County paying their property taxes late decreased.

And that will mean those seeking to make a profit off others’ inability to pay their taxes just may find fewer delinquent tax bills available at Kane County’s tax sale later this month than at any time in the past eight years.

“The trend is moving in the right direction,” Kane County Treasurer David Rickert said. “It’s a really positive leading indicator for the health of the housing market here locally.”

This year, 7,287 property owners received final notices of unpaid property taxes, according to the Kane County Treasurer’s Office. That marks a decline of almost 7.5 percent from a year ago, when 7,872 landowners received final delinquency notices.

It also marks the lowest number of delinquency notices mailed to landowners since 2006, when 7,251 notices were sent.

After the tax sale, property owners have 36 months to redeem the property by paying taxes and penalties owed. If the outstanding property taxes are not redeemed, the purchaser of the tax bill can take the property.

Most years, most delinquent tax bills are paid by the property owner, even after the tax sale.

But in the past 10 years, about 43 percent of all delinquent tax bills ultimately are sold at the tax sale.

If that rate holds true this year, about 3,139 properties ultimately would be sold at the tax sale, which would mark a slight increase over 2012.

However, last year, about 39 percent of the properties that received delinquent notices made it to the tax sale without being redeemed.

That rate was more typical of healthier economic times, when 35 to 40 percent of delinquent taxpayers were unable to redeem their delinquent tax bills.

Should a similar rate prevail this year, about 2,800 to 2,900 properties would be sold at the tax sale – the lowest number since 2005.

Deal done, but solutions to political, fiscal problems remain elusive THE WASHINGTON POST At almost literally the 11th hour, Congress approved legislation to end a costly 16-day partial government shutdown and avert the potentially greater disaster of a default on federal obligations.

Cobbled together by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the deal is minimalist. It funds the federal government through Jan. 15 and authorizes the Treasury to borrow through Feb. 7 – or longer, if the department makes use of “extraordinary measures.”

It also creates new fraud-prevention procedures for Obamacare. That’s about all Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and his followers in the House of Representatives have to show for their effort to “defund” the health care law by shutting down the government.

As many of his GOP colleagues foresaw, what Mr. Cruz billed as a principled stand for freedom and against welfare-statism was actually the political equivalent of a toddler’s tantrum. “This package is a joke compared to what

we could have gotten if we had a more reasonable approach,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told The Washington Post on Wednesday.

“But live and learn; we’ll be doing this in a couple months.”

Alas, Mr. Graham is right. The Senate-made compromise buys only a short interval of peace, during which a House-Senate conference committee is supposed to come up with a longer-term fiscal fix, including – we hope – entitlement reforms and a more rational alternative to the across-the-board “sequester.” Given recent history, though, it is all too possible that Congress will fail to agree and will deliver the country to the brink of another shutdown or default.

Much will depend on whether Republicans really do “live and learn,” as Mr. Graham suggested. For both the GOP and the country, the silver lining in this debacle could be a measure of clarification. Experience has shown that a no-compromise strategy is doomed to fail, in both political and policy terms. Those who advocated it within the GOP camp, and effectively neutered

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, must be brought to heel by cooler-headed leaders in the caucus.

This won’t be easy, in part because a well-funded apparatus headed by outside groups, such as Club for Growth and Heritage Action, stands behind the Cruz faction, threatening to support a primary challenge to any House member or senator who does not toe its line. Though hardly unconstitutional, as some have suggested, the groups’ brand of politics is what you might call counter-constitutional. Contrary to the Founding Fathers’ purpose, which was to minimize the power and influence of factions, this unelected minority exerts pressure through indirect channels, purposely disrupting consensus and defeating compromise.

The past few weeks have showed that the GOP ultra-right cannot be appeased. That leaves the party no responsible choice but to confront it. In that respect, Wednesday’s deal gave Mr. Boehner and other GOP leaders something they little deserve but greatly need – a do-over.

To the Editor: As a proud Latino, and a member of the Elgin Community College family, it is an honor for me to have celebrated the recent National Hispanic Heritage Month.

The history of the U.S. is well populated with the contributions that Latinos, as well as all immigrants groups, have given to the betterment and advancement of our country, in multiple areas, such as education, civil and labor rights, culture, science, work force, military, politics and more.

The contribution of Latinos to this country is well felt in all 50 states and abroad. It is felt even in those states where the Latino population is not a large one. This is because in every single aspect of the life of this country there are many Latinos making sure we all benefit from the fruit of their hard work.

As it has been for all minorities in this country, Latinos have faced serious difficulties to achieve equality, fairness and justice. Although progress has been made, day in and day out, we continue to face obstacles, primarily from political groups and uninformed citizens that have made one of the primary topics of their agenda to block any effort to bring millions of Hispanics – most of them children, teenagers and young adults – to a path to become U.S. residents and eventually U.S. citizens.

These are human beings that have worked hard for this country, kids that have not known any other country but the U.S. and that were brought here due to no fault of their own.

I am very proud of being part of a Hispanic-serving institution like ECC. Year after year, the ECC family honors Hispanic heritage with a month-long celebration.

As I said in my welcoming remarks at the Hispanic Heritage Month Kick off Breakfast here at ECC, we need to continue this effort, this fight for justice and equality for all, to honor the memory of those who came before us, those who are the present and those who will lead in the future.

I will end this letter by borrowing a quote from labor and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez: “We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthen this community – and this nation.”

to help out anywhere I can on defense with all of our linebackers down,” Lopez said.

A standout wrestler for the Saints last winter at 160 pounds, Lopez said his training in that notoriously grueling sport has prepared him for his added responsibilities this season.

“It’s definitely the biggest difference in the world,” Lopez said. “I come out here and first day of the summer, you definitely can tell the difference between wrestling and football, and how much harder it is in wrestling, so it’s definitely prepared me a lot as far as conditioning goes, with offense and defense and everything.”

If Batavia wins tonight, the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0 UEC River) are practically assured of a three-peat as outright conference champions. An upset by the Saints (5-2, 3-1 UEC River) would put a three-way conference tie between East, Batavia and Geneva in play.

“We just need to be smart.

We just need to be intense,” Lopez said. “We’ve been coming out flat, and it’s showed in a couple games we haven’t really played up to our potential. I really think we can give them a run. I really think we can beat them, we just have to come out intense.”

Anderson – who plans to undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery after the season – has been relegated to limited carries and is more heavily involved in the offense at receiver and H-back. This is the third straight injury-marred season on varsity for Anderson, who battled a wrist injury as a sophomore and shoulder woes last season.

“There’s definitely frustration there but I talk to coach Fields every day, we talk about what I’m going to be doing [each week], trying to make sure I’m still helping out,” Anderson said. “It’s still exciting to do other positions, and still play football

at least. I’m just happy I get to play, I guess.”

Injuries around him have affected Lopez just as much defensively. Lopez started the season expecting to chip in among a deep secondary but a rash of injuries at linebacker have bumped Lopez into the front seven as an outside ’backer.

Jon Finn, back from his own injury travails (broken nose), has taken over at middle linebacker after injuries to Parker Vidmich, Pat Frio and Michael Candre thinned the Saints’ options.

T. CHARLES – All around Ramon Lopez, injury woes have bedeviled his St. Charles East positional cohorts.

Fortunately for the Saints football team, Lopez is still churning, providing East a lifeline on both sides of the ball entering tonight’s Upstate Eight Conference River showdown at Batavia.

Lopez is being asked to do much more than was originally in the plans this season, but the 5-foot-9, 170-pound junior has gladly accepted the heftier workload.

“He’s just a tough, hardnosed kid,” Saints coach Mike Fields said. “I wish we had more of those. We need some more tough, hard-nosed kids around here, but we’ll take the ones that we have, and Ramon would definitely be one of those.”

Lopez expected to be a complement to returning starting running back Erik Anderson this season but Anderson has dealt with a shoulder injury for much of the season, elevating Lopez to the Saints’ featured back in recent weeks.

The results have been decent, although Fields is looking for more out of East’s running game, including the line play.

“They’ve given us everything that they have,” Fields said of the line. “We look for continued improvement out of them this week and next week, and hopefully after that [in the playoffs].”

Offensively, the Saints have seen more success through the air than on the ground. Lopez leads East with 336 rushing yards on 87 carries, and has five rushing touchdowns and a receiving TD.

HERE WE GO AGAIN Knights, Spartans in clash of unbeatens, like 2010 contest

Same situation. Kaneland and Sycamore have been in this position before, both football teams unbeaten before facing each other in an unofficial Northern Illinois Big 12 East title game.

Flash back to Week 8 of the 2010 season. The Knights and Spartans had started their first year in the NI Big 12 East unbeaten through seven weeks before meeting for a showdown in Maple Park.

The contest ended the same way every regular-season game has ended for Kaneland since the NI Big 12 was created, as the Knights claimed a 30-13 win.

Kaneland’s Taylor Andrews made the biggest play of the game, returning a fumble 86 yards for a touchdown to put the Knights up by two scores. Kaneland clinched its first of three consecutive outright conference titles that night, and can clinch a share of another with a win tonight.

“We turned the ball over.

You can’t do that in a game of this caliber,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said of the 2010 game. “Good teams are going to score when you turn the ball over and that’s what we did.”

Unfortunately for Sycamore, turnovers have been a theme in recent contests against Kaneland. In the Knights’ 35-21 win in 2011, Kaneland turned two second-half Sycamore fumbles into touchdowns.

“Came down to a couple of fumbles that allowed them to take the game to us. That still hurts to this day.”

Big games between Kaneland and Sycamore are nothing new. In 2009, the Spartans defeated the Knights, 40-13, in the first round of the IHSA Class 5A playoffs.

Both schools were members of the Western Sun Conference from 2006 to 2009, and were part of the Suburban Prairie Conference before that. Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said the rivalry between the schools, which are about 15 miles apart, has been ramped up even more since

the NI Big 12 was formed.

“They’ve had a really good run of talent, and so have we,” Fedderly said. “... Joe and his staff do a great job with them, and it’s always a really competitive game. It’s something we really enjoy being part of.”

However, Ryan said that for the matchup to become a real rivalry, his team needs to start getting some victories.

“I think it’s always been a rivalry just because of the close proximity of the towns.

They’ve certainly had the advantage in that rivalry, if you want to call it that,” he said.

“For it to be a true rivalry, you have to win on the other end. They’ve had an outstanding program. Tom does a good job. We haven’t lost to bad teams. They’ve been outstand-

ing, as well.”

Sycamore is adding more bleachers to Engh Community Field with the expectation of a big crowd tonight. Sycamore athletic director Chauncey Carrick said he hopes there will be 5,000 to 6,000 fans in attendance. Fedderly remembers a rocking Peterson Field three years ago. Expect the same atmosphere in Sycamore. “[The crowd] was great,” Fedderly said of the 2010 game.

“The last three years it’s come down to either us and Sycamore or us and Morris [for the NI Big 12 East title], and everywhere we’ve gone, there’s a lot of fans, and the atmosphere has been great.”

ROAD TRIPPING Kaneland fans headed to Engh Community Field in Sycamore for tonight’s battle of unbeatens, be assured – Sycamore AD Chauncey Carrick told the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb that the school does not plan to turn fans away.

Carrick said he hopes as many as 6,000 fans might turn out, which would be about double the previous high for a Sycamore home game earlier this season against Geneseo.

Some temporary bleachers are being added for the game.

The teams meet for the final time as Suburban Christian Conference rivals, with the Cadets heading to the Chicago Catholic League and ACC to the Metro Suburban next year. There is no nonconference meeting planned in the near future.

“This game is bragging rights for the Aurora kids,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “We talked about last week [against St. Francie] for the St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia kids. St. Francis is bragging rights for those kids, now this week is bragging rights for the Aurora kids.”

COACHING SPOTLIGHT Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe said “I’ve never really been associated with or have witnessed or even heard of this type of devastation through injury to a team,” referring to the 15 of 22 starting spots that are down to back-ups because of injuries.

That’s quite the dilemma, especially with juggernaut Montini coming to town Saturday.

“Life is going to kick your teeth sometimes,” Beebe said. “The last thing you can be is be a quitter. That’s what I want to come out of this.”

PLAYOFF WATCH A Geneva win tonight at Metea Valley would clinch a return to the playoffs for the Vikings (5-2), who uncharacteristically missed the postseason last year.

ACC, Aurora Christian and St. Charles East are among the five-win teams that also can clinch the playoffs this week.

The buzz in the stands Kaneland’s marathon winning streaks are the elephants in the room anywhere it goes, and loom especially large on a night when there’s a realistic chance the streaks could be in jeopardy.

Kaneland has won 35 straight regular-season games dating to the final week of the 2009 season, and the Knights have yet to lose a conference game in the Northern Illinois Big 12, which debuted in 2010.

Niemann, an Iowa recruit who originally gave a verbal commitment to Northern Illinois, has 28 receptions for 618 yards and six touchdowns this season.

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly said Niemann’s presence helps make this Sycamore team even more dangerous than some of the Spartans teams from the recent past.

“I think Niemann is a really special player,” Fedderly said.

The Kaneland secondary – like the rest of the Knights’ defense – has been reliable all season. The Knights have allowed only 60 points all year, less than half of what Sycamore has yielded.

Ball-hawking linebacker Cole Carlson has also proven to be a key component in the Knights’ pass coverage.

The senior and three-year varsity starter has played in more than his share of highstakes games, and figures to remain composed in a difficult environment tonight.

From past showdowns against Sycamore and Morris, David and his fellow seniors know all about handling the pressure of a conference race.

“We know that going through our conference is going to get us playoff-ready,” Fedderly said. “Getting the opportunity when you play in these big games is just an unbelievable experience for our kids as to what is going to be coming down the road.”

Best-case scenario for the Knights Kaneland’s vaunted lines overwhelm Sycamore.

Sycamore coach Joe Ryan is certainly concerned about that possibility. Ryan said the Knights’ line play doesn’t compare to anyone Sycamore has encountered.

Knights senior left tackle Joe Komel is commanding Division I attention but the Knights’ blocking has earned rave reviews across the board.

“They’re so much bigger than anyone we’ve played to this point,” Ryan said.

“There’s not a team we can draw comparisons to that we’ve played to this point.

There’s teams that had an outstanding lineman, just not all of them, with the size.”

X-factor

Best-case scenario for the Spartans

Sycamore caught Kaneland’s attention from the get-go this season, when the

Spartans won opening week against Lincoln-Way West, the team that ousted Kaneland last year in the second round of the 5A playoffs.

The Spartans’ offense has the firepower to sustain drives even against a defense of Kaneland’s caliber. In addition to Niemann, quarterback Devin Mottet (1,149 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, one interception, 541 rushing yards) and running back Riley Hurley (532 rushing yards, 14 TDs) are key pieces for the Spartans.

For Sycamore to prevail, though, the Spartans’ defense will have to pry the ball away at least a couple of times from a Kaneland offense that has turned the ball over more than the Knights would like this season.

Without some takeaways on defense, the Spartans – who allowed Rochelle 33 points last week in a 42-33 Spartans win – seem unlikely to generate enough defensive stops to prevent David from cashing in on the Knights’ tone-setting line and deep receiving corps.

Jay Schwab’s prediction: Kaneland 31, Sycamore 21 Kaneland’s defense has been dynamite all season, and with this game long circled on the calendar, count on the Knights having a terrific gameplan in place for limiting Mottet, Niemann and Co. Even if the game is tight in the second half, the Knights’ hulking line should be able to wear down the Spartans in the fourth quarter and allow the Knights to manage their way to yet another NI Big 12 conquest.

The skinny: St. Charles East started the season 3-0, including a Week 2 win against a Jacobs team that has won five games in a row since. Yet Saints coach Mike Fields said “your head spins as a coach” about some of the inconsistency the Saints have exhibited since, including trailing winless

Streamwood at halftime last week. “It’s a great group of kids, but where’s our identity? We haven’t found that yet,” Fields said. “Every week we try to find it.” Injuries have certainly factored in, especially on the defensive side, where would-be key linebackers Michael Candre, Pat Frio and Parker Vidmich remain sidelined, Frio likely for the season. In addition to Jon Finn – an expected starter – Ramon Lopez, Vince Locasio and Nick Lombardo are being pressed into action at linebacker. “We’ll just do our best, put our best guys out there and try and give the Bulldogs the best we’ve got,”

Fields said. East’s best, Fields realizes, will be needed to be competitive with a Batavia team that has rolled since its lone loss, Week 2 against Richards. About the only thing that went wrong in the Bulldogs’ thumping of St. Charles North last week was a season-ending knee injury to offensive guard Mitchell Krusz, a junior. But like most spots on the field, Batavia is deep up front. “We’ve used about eight offensive linemen all year long,” Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron said.

The skinny: Geneva coach Rob Wicinski’s team is in for a sneak peek of playoff intensity tonight from Metea Valley, which must win one of its last two games to become playoff-eligible. The Mustangs have another difficult foe, Waubonsie Valley, to deal with next week. “I told my guys [Wednesday], you haven’t seen anything like that this year, where someone’s back’s against the wall,” Wicinski said. “They’re in playoff mode now.” Offensively, the Mustangs spread the field but still run quite a bit, reminding Wicinski of old Western Sun Conference foe Sycamore.

Dynamic Metea running back Jay Parker “is a little bit of a bowling ball,” Wicinski said. “He just runs people over.” The Vikings seek their fifth straight win in what shapes up as their last tough test before the playoffs. “I think this is a great game,” Wicinski said. “This is a great opportunity.

You have to be able to survive the first gut shot ... and then just be able to grind it out. That’ll be real important.” Metea is Geneva’s UEC crossover foe for a

second straight season, with the Vikings winning a shootout last year, 61-48.

Extra point: Geneva’s offense has been hampered in practice by multiple illnesses this week but Wicinski is enthused to welcome defensive back James Carroll back to the mix after a broken hand.

St. Charles North (3-4, 2-3 UEC River) at Larkin (3-4, 2-2 UEC River) at Memorial Field, 7:30 p.m. today Last week: St. Charles North lost to Batavia, 44-7; Larkin lost to Bartlett, 20-7.

The skinny: North’s murky playoff hopes are on the line as the North Stars seek to bounce back from a deflating showing against Batavia. A win against Larkin would extend what has been a loss-win-loss-win pattern for the North Stars throughout the season. North coach Rob Pomazak said after the Batavia game he planned to stick with Erik Miller at quarterback after going to Nathan Didier during the third quarter last week. “Erik was coming off a concussion, it was 31-0, I don’t want his confidence to be down more than it maybe already is,” Pomazak said. “Let Nathan get an opportunity.

Nathan deserves a chance to go out there and play. I thought it was a good opportunity to put him against a first unit that was still out there.” Senior Kat Stutesman is on the verge of setting North’s program mark for PATs. Extra point: This could be North’s last Friday night game of the season, with the regular-season finale at South Elgin set for 1 p.m. Oct. 26.

Marmion (6-1, 4-1 Suburban Christian Conference Blue) at Aurora Central Catholic (5-2, 3-2 SCC Gold), 7 p.m. today Last week: Marmion beat St. Francis, 26-20; ACC beat Guerin, 45-14.

The skinny: Marmion has seen plenty of teams with winning records this season – teams with bigger reputations than ACC – but Cadets coach Dan Thorpe said the disciplined

running game and misdirection employed by the Chargers will be new, making for a tricky week of practice. The Cadets’ defense has seen great success behind a smaller, speed-oriented pass rush – 6-foot-1, 195-pound running back Jordan Glasgow recently added to the mix since he’s now healthy enough to play two ways – but ACC’s brawny offensive line presents a challenge. “If we can … play a little more downhill, I think it allows us to use some of that size,” Chargers coach Brian Casey said. “If we start playing more east and west, we open ourselves to a little more of a concern of letting that speed really come into play. If we can come right at them, we can utilize more of that power inside that we might have.” Speaking of power, rugged Marmion running back Lucas Warren returns from injury this week to fortify the Cadets’ deep backfield.

Extra point: ACC is an underdog tonight against Marmion and next week against Montini, meaning a 5-4 finish is a realistic possibility. Casey said he thinks the Chargers are in decent shape on playoff points but he plans to investigate ACC’s playoff prospects more thoroughly over the weekend if ACC can’t upend Marmion.

Montini (7-0, 5-0 Suburban Christian Conference Blue) at Aurora Christian (5-2, 3-2 SCC Blue), 7 p.m. Saturday Last week: Montini beat Marian Central, 40-35; Aurora Christian lost to IC Catholic Prep, 48-6.

The skinny: Aurora Christian has plenty of reason to brood, having lost a laundry list of prominent starters in recent weeks. Quarterback Austin Bray, receiver/DB Noah Hagerty, receiver/DB Brandon Walgren, tight end/defensive lineman Jackson Carpenter, receiver/ defensive back Noah Roberts, receiver/linebacker/kicker Trevor Hills, fullback/linebacker Chase Tomney, fullback/linebacker Daniel Clapp and two-way lineman Jonah Walker are the nine Eagles who were either hurt before or during last week’s

debacle against IC Catholic Prep, accounting for 15 of Aurora Christian’s 22 starting spots.

Worse yet, four-time defending 5A champion Montini arrives for what projected as a marquee, Saturday night showdown before the rash of injuries hit the Eagles. Still, Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe said the team is not sulking. “As we go through this week of practice, I’m just seeing this team unite and come together,” Beebe said. “It’s really neat.” The silver lining, Beebe said, is most of the wounded Eagles will be back in time for the Eagles to begin their 3A state title defense at the end of October. “I’m very encouraged, I’m very upbeat about the rest of the season,” Beebe said. “I think we’re going to get kids back at the right time, not all of them, but a good majority of them, and we’re going to try and make a run at this thing in 3A.” Extra point: Of the numerous Eagles varsity call-ups needed to plug holes, sophomore left tackle Zach Williams arguably has the most dizzying challenge, with Ohio State-bound Montini defensive end Dylan Thompson to account for. Beebe said he’s tried to keep things light with Williams. “I keep telling him, ‘You’re just blocking Ohio State this weekend, don’t worry about it.’ ” Beebe said.

Guerin (2-5, 0-5 SCC Gold) at St. Francis (3-4, 1-4 SCC Blue), 7 p.m. today Last week: Guerin lost to ACC, 45-14; St. Francis lost to Marmion, 26-20.

The skinny: St. Francis followed last year’s template much too closely for the Spartans’ liking, starting the season 3-0 before dropping four straight once the SCC Blue competition stiffened. Among those four losses are two straight defeats by six points, to Marian and Marmion, with the Spartans blowing an early lead against the Cadets. St. Francis is without two-way contributor Steven Fassnacht, who sprained his neck in the Marmion game.

Guerin enters on a five-game losing streak.

Extra point: Provided the Spartans prevail tonight as

expected, St. Francis would need to beat St. Edward (5-2) in another home game next week to become playoff-eligible. The Spartans missed the postseason at 5-4 last year but appear better situated on playoff points this season.

Wheaton Academy (3-4, 2-3 SCC Gold) at Chicago Christian (2-5, 2-3 SCC Gold), 7:30 p.m. today Last week: Wheaton Academy lost to St. Edward, 60-21; Chicago Christian lost to Walther Lutheran, 43-21.

The skinny: Wheaton Academy’s defense is in circle-the-wagons mode after a jarring defeat at the hands of St. Ed. “It’s not what we were expecting going into it,” said interim Warriors coach Brad Thornton, who was counting on a close game with the Green Wave. “Things in that second quarter went downhill pretty quickly for us.” A win would maintain Wheaton Academy’s playoff possibilities leading up to a Week 9 game against powerhouse Marian Central.

Extra point: Tight end Marino Costello had a big night for the Warriors last week, catching all three touchdown passes from Wheaton Academy QB David Thrasher.

Rock Falls (1-6, 0-5 Big Northern Conference West) at Burlington Central (2-5, 2-3 Big Northern Conference East), 7 p.m. tonight Last week: Rock Falls lost to Mendota, 57-34; Burlington Central lost to Richmond-Burton, 14-13, in OT. The skinny: Central faces the unenviable task of bouncing back emotionally after a gut-wrenching, OT loss zapped the Rockets’ playoff hopes last week. A blocked extra point in OT doomed the Rockets. Rock Falls has allowed 56 or more points in each of its past four games.

Extra point: Tonight marks Central’s second straight Rocket-on-Rocket matchup after facing Richmond-Burton last week.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Longtime Kaneland athletic director Leigh Jaffke resigned her position effective Wednesday night, Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler confirmed Thursday.

Jaffke tendered her resignation in a letter to school officials Wednesday. It was accepted later in the day in executive session at the end of a District 302 school board meeting at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

Schuler did not discuss the contents of Jaffke’s letter or possible reasons behind her departure.

“We didn’t have any prior discussion directly with her about a resignation,” Schuler said.

Assistant principal Mike Rice will oversee athletics on a short-term basis before Kaneland likely pursues another interim candidate for the remainder of the school year, Schuler said.

The timing of Jaffke’s resignation leaves Kaneland waiting until the spring to begin the search for a fulltime successor beginning in the 201415 school year. Officials are uncertain whether the interim candidate will come from within District 302 or exter-

nally. Jaffke became Kaneland’s athletic director in 2000.

“We have not solidified a plan, but certainly [are] ... making sure that we’re continuing to provide the service from inside the athletic department that the community, the coaches and the athletes expect,” Schuler said.

A 1980 West Aurora graduate, Jaffke starred in basketball for three seasons and played collegiately as a center at East Tennessee State. Jaffke could not be reached for comment.

Kaneland boys soccer coach Scott Parillo said he was surprised Thursday to learn about Jaffke, with whom he has worked throughout his 13-year coaching tenure. He said he had no insight into the seemingly abrupt timing.

“It’s a bummer, it’s a little shocking, but I wish her the best,” Parillo said.

Schuler said Kaneland officials Thursday sent a letter to athletes’ parents regarding Jaffke’s resignation.

“We indicated we appreciate her service and her dedication to the athletic program in the past 14 years,” Schuler said, “because certainly she’s been a part of a lot of it.”

MAPLE PARK – Plan B turned out pretty well for Ignacio Toscano and the Kaneland boys soccer team.

The senior midfielder took a detour that paid off handsomely with about 23 minutes left in the second half of Kaneland’s 2-1, Northern Illinois Big 12 East win against Sycamore.

“I made my run to the corner looking to cross it at first, but the ball wasn’t there yet,” Toscano said. “So I Ignacio came back up on top of Toscano the box, and I asked Anthony [Parillo], who was in possession of the ball, I asked him for the ball, and I took two steps into the middle, and I just let it rip. I put it upper-90 and got the winning goal.”

The Knights (9-5-4, 6-2-2) hope the victory, giving them a series sweep over the struggling Spartans (2-181, 1-8-1), foreshadows Wednesday’s IHSA Class 2A Sycamore Regional semifinal in which the Knights and Spartans will clash for a third time.

Except next time, Toscano hopes Kaneland doesn’t have to sweat breaking a second-half deadlock.

“That’s an inferior team to us, honestly,” Toscano said. “We weren’t playing Kaneland soccer in the first half, and then second half, I feel we came more together.”

Kaneland produced several strong scoring chances in the first 20 minutes but only capitalized on one of them, an Arsim Azemi score off Adhurim Azemi’s assist.

The Spartans tied the match with 21:47 to play in the first half on a sharp-angle goal from Jacob Bassett.

Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said he went with a more senior-dominated lineup than usual for longer stretches on the Knights’ senior day.

“It was important for the seniors to get their playing time, and it was important for them to get a victory on their last time out here,” Parillo said.

One of those seniors, Tyler Siebert, was immediately substituted out after starting the match. Siebert injured his foot in Tuesday’s win against Yorkville.

Parillo said he hopes to have Siebert available for regionals next week.

North Stars sophomore diver Katie Schutz, a converted gymnast, earned the night’s other victory.

Neither side backflipped or flipped out over the Saints’ 115-70 win. If anything, East remained grounded about a talent base it has felt good about since workouts started in August.

“We’re definitely really deep, so we have every event covered,” Saints senior Jamie Cranfill said. “We’re really close, and it really motivates all of us to do our best.”

Cranfill covered the 100yard backstroke in a season-best 1:01.44 in one of East’s victories.

Classmate Stephanie Garvin took the 500 freestyle in 5:13.34 while anchoring winning relays in the 200 freestyle (1:40.79) and 400 freestyle (3:40.34).

Competing for the first time since finishing second behind three-time defending state champion New Trier at the Saints’ College Events Meet on Saturday, East channeled some residual energy.

“We came in a close second with the best team in the state, so we’re really pumped, and we know that we’re going to go far this season, especially at state and sectionals coming up,” Garvin said.

North, which switched many of its regulars’ events, is also gearing toward the looming state series.

Sectionals are set for Nov. 16, with the state meet scheduled for Nov. 22-23, which ultimately was why coach Rob Rooney took the end result in stride.

“A lack of focus, you know, is really what I saw. But it’s all right. It’s kind of what sometimes it should be in October. I don’t mind not being fresh,” Rooney said.

St. Charles High alum Shane Whildin, a former Saints state champion now working in Speedo’s marketing department, donated Breaststroke 4 Hope T-shirts and swim caps to both schools in a bid to bolster the community atmosphere inherent to most every East-North competition.

Donations to the cause were accepted in lieu of admission, and there were more fans clad in pink than in Saints orange and black or North Stars blue.

This week, Whildin called the effort the first of its kind for a high school meet since Breaststroke 4 Hope launched in September 2012. Guinea pigs don’t often take kindly to water, but Whildin’s optimism about the test case still prevailed.

The early verdict looks fa-

vorable.

“It’s definitely for a great cause and makes us think beyond just swimming and diving,” Saints coach Joe Cabel said, “but taking our mind off what we’re doing and trying to raise money for an important cause, I think it makes it easier to swim and dive.”

Added Cranfill: “It’s really fun supporting a cause with North because they’re our closest rivals.”

Official figures were not available, but Rooney estimated the effort raised close to $1,000.

Individual winners Katie Nagler (100 freestyle, 54.27) and Jordan Morling (100 butterfly, 58.75) were part of three winning relays, also swimming the 200 medley relay that won in 1:50.86.

Cranfill and Shea Hoyt, who won the 50 freestyle in 25.09, opened the medley re-

lay, and Hoyt also was part of East’s 400 free relay. Isabel Herb claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.03 while swimming with the 200 free relay.

Anna O’Malley (200 freestyle, 2:01.07) and Lucy Johnson (200 individual medley, 2:14.45) were the Saints’ other winners.

Schutz registered a season-best score of 186.95 as she continues to improve in a sport she only began in high school.

Teammate Jordyn Paulsen encouraged Schutz to try diving, and she obliged.

Shealyn Boland coaches divers at both St. Charles schools, so the meet felt in part like a practice with loud supporters wearing pink.

“It’s good to dive with the girls that you’re really close with,” Schutz said. “We pushed each other, and that’s good.”

Boys/girls golf: IHSA state tournament

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE RICHMOND – The Burlington Central girls volleyball team fell to division foe Richmond-Burton, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21, Thursday night.

The result put the teams in a tie for the top spot in the Big Northern Conference East Division.

Central trailed early in each game and only managed to make a comeback in its first-game victory.

Lauren Wiltsie led the team with 14 kills and two aces.

“We competed and I thought they earned it tonight, got to give them all the credit, they just played extremely well,” Central coach Marv Leavitt said. “They had a huge run in the second game and it turned the whole

match around in their favor.”

The Rockets couldn’t stop Richmond-Burton’s best player, Ali Frantti, who ended the match with 31 kills, almost single-handedly saddling Central with its first conference loss.

Maddy Barry had 26 assists for Central and Allie O’Reilly had 17 digs in the losing effort.

The Rockets will compete over the weekend in the Lincoln-Way Central Invite.

Kaneland 2, Sycamore 1 (25-22, 23-25, 26-24): At Maple Park, Ellie Dunn had 18 kills, 10 digs and nine service points and Jenny Lubic dished 27 assists to elevate Kaneland (11-14, 4-4 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) in the conference thriller.

Riley Hannula (eight kills, seven service points, three

blocks) and Vanessa Gould (six kills, six digs) were also among the Knights’ main contributors.

Geneva def. Aurora Central Catholic, 2-0 (25-23, 25-9): At Geneva, freshman Grace Loberg had 13 kills, Courtney Caruso had 11 assists and nine digs and Kelsey Wicinski had 14 digs as Geneva (227) topped ACC. Megan Cameron added 11 assists for the Vikings.

Knights tread different postseason path Kaneland has traveled to Hampshire, St. Francis, Burlington Central, Sycamore and Huntley for regionals in addition to hosting its own regional since the IHSA adopted the four-class system for girls volleyball in 2007.

News that the Knights were going south this season – to Sandwich for regionals and Princeton for a possible sectional – prompted good vibes.

If not life, variety at least can spice up volleyball, especially for a team so often clustered with nearby rivals Burlington Central and Sycamore.

“I’m really excited. I think changing it up is a good idea,” Kaneland junior outside hitter Ellie Dunn said. “We’ve got a new team. Might as well. I think it’s awesome.”

The youthful Knights, 9-12 entering Thursday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 home match against Sycamore, could also meet the Spartans in a possible regional final.

An encouraging showing in a weekend tournament in Bettendorf, Iowa, was the latest positive development for a team that’s become increasingly comfortable with first year coach Kerri McCastland.

“It was interesting to see how that played out, but we keep getting better,” said Dunn, who verbally committed to Ball State on Tuesday.

Becky Gosain of St. Charles-based NOVO: Renewing Joy in Life, will be leading the free session from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the library, 127 James St., Geneva.

Gosain’s talk, sponsored by the Geneva Library Foundation, is titled “Norman Rockwell Holidays: How Realistic Are They Anyway?”

“It’s time to let go of our Norman Rockwell and Martha Stewart expectations,” said Gosain, who has been serving the mental health community since 1994 and works with children, adolescents, adults and families.

Holidays, she noted, can be a time of extremely high stress, which can lead to anxiety and depression. In her presentation, she will be sharing how to shift expectations so they are more realistic.

The evening will include a short reception, introduction of the Geneva Library Foundation, Gosain’s presentation and a question-and-answer period.

Volkswagen gives CC more seat room When it arrived for sale in the United States in 2009 with the styling of a four-door coupe, Volkswagen officials emphasized the CC (sold as Passat Comfort Coupe in Europe) was a sedan. Based on the Passat, the CC had all of that sedan’s engineering and ergonomic flavoring, but lacked one thing.

The rear seats were buckets with seating for only two. The Passat could seat three adults in its rear seat.

A change was made in 2013, which carries over into the 2014 model year. There now is seating for three in the rear bench seating area of the CC. It can be advertised as a four-door, five-passenger midsize sedan.

With the change, the CC matches the seating of a Passat but they are not the same vehicle as the CC includes more luxury features as standard equipment.

For those who want excitement in their driving life, the CC will provide it. With a sporttuned suspension and a lively powerplant, the CC continues Volkswagen’s reputation for quick starts and smooth and quiet sailings along roadways.

The powerplants are either a 2-liter, turbocharged, 200-horsepower four-cylinder engine or a 280-horsepower V6 mated to either a six-speed stick shift or six-speed dual clutch automated manual transmission. The DSG operates like an automatic, which means the driver has no work to do.

A recently tested turbo 200-horsepower CC with the DSG accelerated from 0 to 60 miles per hour in slightly more than seven seconds. A hill-hold feature of the transmission lets the CC stop on a steep incline without rolling backward.

Braking from 60 mph to 0 can be done in a distance of less than 125 feet on dry pavement. This is good for a car with disc brakes featuring single calipers.

The CC is a standout in a crowded field of midsize

Volkswagen introduced the four-door CC to North American buyers in 2009. Choice of powerplants remains the same in 2014. A turbocharged, 200-horsepower four-cylinder engine is standard, but a 280-horsepower V6 is available. Six-speed transmissions (automatic or automated DSG manual) are mated to the engines.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper four-door cars. The seats are plush but firm and the two in front operate by power and are heated or cooled as the season indicates. Leg and body room is ample for the average adult (130-220 pounds). Insulation, as well as powerplant mounts and dampers, keeps the cabin quiet as a cocoon. Besides the interior metal and leather trim, amenities abound. Standard equipment on the CC includes bixenon lamps, adaptive front headlights and LED taillamps.

Prices start at $31,795 for a Sport and can rise to $43,000 for the VR6 all-wheel-drive Executive model. Of the six models, the $43,000 CC is the one with AWD. The other five are frontwheel-drive models. The tested FWD model was a four-cylinder, $36,995 Executive with standard

equipment including a power sunroof, interior ambient lighting, navigation system and an upgrade color touchscreen interface.

Since it is a sedan shaped like a coupe, sight lines are poor to the rear so use of the power and fold exterior mirrors is essential. As a sedan, the CC has four doors for easy entry and exit into front or rear leather seats.

Both front and rear seating rows have an armrest storage console but in the rear it is a pulldown apparatus. There is a lockable pass-through in the rear seating area to connect with the 13-cubic-foot lighted and carpeted trunk. This allows for the temporary storage of longer items, such as skis and poles.

A raked windshield, subdued C-pillar treatment and frameless rear windows are design highlights of this coupe passing as a sedan.

Fit and finish on the test vehicle were excellent. One out-

side metal panel met in a perfect seam with another. Doors and windows were tight, and insulating materials must have been in every hollow space surrounding the cabin as quiet prevailed.

The inline, intercooled and turbocharged four-cylinders have straight injection. Economy is a plus as during the test week, the 3,369-pound CC averaged 28.2 miles per gallon.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the CC four-cylinder at 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

The CC weaves around sharp corners with ease as the steering takes no effort and the strut suspension system maintains an even keel.

Major features even for the base Sport model are leather seats, heated front seats, power driver and front passenger seats, memory (seat for driver) and power exterior heated mirrors, four express power windows with anti-pinch protection, power door locks, remote

keyless entry, foldable key fob, an eight-speaker sound system for AM-FM radio, in-dashboard MP3 playback, readable six-disc CD changer and auxiliary input (multimedia socket for external audio), six airbags (front, sides, overhead), air conditioning, climate control with air pollen filter, and cruise control mounted on the leather-clad steering wheel.

Other standard features on all models include intermittent windshield wipers with heated washer nozzles, a European tuned sport suspension, lockable and illuminated glove box, reading lights front and rear, three power outlets (front and rear seats, trunk), armrests, cupholders (two each) in front and rear, four grab handles, trip computer, outside temperature display, tachometer, chrome exterior trim, self-dimming rear-view mirror and an analog clock centered on the dashboard.

Upgrade models come with a halogen reflector lens for each of the two fog lights integrated into the front bumper, lower extended sport bumpers and side skirts, stainless steel door sill plates, dual-zone climate control and 18-inch P235 self-sealing tires, rather than 17-inchers, mounted on alloy wheels. A temporary spare is stored in a cavity under the trunk floor.

Besides the air bags, standard safety fare includes a four-wheel antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, tire pressure monitoring system, and headrests and pretensioners to complement the four seat belts.

Warranty coverage is four years or 50,000 miles with 24hour roadside assistance, and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain. Scheduled maintenance is free for the first two years or 24,000 miles.

‘Mother of George’: A vibrant, extravagantly beautiful world

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post “Mother of George,” the ravishing sophomore feature film by Nigerian-born fashion photographer Andrew Dosunmu, opens with a wedding scene that calls such classics as “The Deer Hunter” and “Goodfellas” to mind, a celebration every bit as closely observed and utterly mesmerizing.

Like those films, “Mother of George” is set in a tightly knit immigrant community – in this case, Nigerians living in Brooklyn, where they’ve built a largely insular world that’s only occasionally punctured by the society surrounding them. As that radiant opening sequence plays and plays, the stunning bride, Adenike (Danai Gurira), and her groom, Ayodele (Isaach de Bankole), are feted by friends and family, all dressed in explosions of saffrons, pinks and blues, and all offering blessings and sage advice – none more freighted than the wish from Ayodele’s mother for the speedy arrival of a grandson, to be named George.

But no pressure! “Mother of George” chronicles Adenike’s attempts to build a family with Ayodele, who runs a successful restaurant with his brother Biyi (Tony Okungbowa). Meanwhile, Adenike’s solemn efforts to be a traditional Yoruba wife contrast sharply with the behavior of her best friend, Sade (Yaya Alafia), who is forging a far more contemporary, hybrid Nigerian-American lifestyle.

If that vernacular is prone to facile emotionalism and simplistic crudeness, Dosunmu infuses it with a rich, glowing, visual sense and languorous, deliberative pacing.

As with his stunning debut film, “Restless City,” Dosunmu has worked with cinematographer Bradford Young to create a world of vibrant textures, surfaces and diverse hues, whether the jewel tones of sumptuous African textiles or the

characters’ bodies themselves. Filming in mirrors or through sheer curtains, starting shots blurry and then bringing them into sharp focus, the filmmakers create a glittering, vibrant, extravagantly beautiful world that, although steeped in global consciousness, feels as recognizable and immediate as any prime-time soap opera.

Working with playwright Darci Picoult, Dosunmu has created a fair amount of tension as the shy but supremely self-possessed Adenike navigates her own way through conflicting pressures and impulses – a journey that becomes fraught with its own physical and psychic dangers. Gurira

and de Bankole infuse their Adenike and Ayodele with strength and sympathy in a story that, while culturally specific, never feels merely anthropological or patronizing.

Like his characters, Dosunmu is forging his own cinematic space – one steeped in the rituals, rhythms and textures of the country of his birth, but one in which any viewer will feel at home. In fact, it’s a place you may never want to leave.

• “Mother of George” received three and a half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains sexuality, some obscenity and a disturbing image. It runs 107 minutes.

Siblings saddened by grandpa playing favorites National honor society Dear Abby: My sisters and I just realized after comparing notes that our grandfather, who has been giving us an allowance for many years, gives each of us a different amount. We don’t understand why he would do that unless he is playing favorites. Mom says it’s because he’s allowed to give each of us a certain amount per year for tax purposes, but it still doesn’t explain why the amounts are all different.

We are a year apart in age, and the differences are substantial. Mom said Grandpa does this with her brothers and sisters, too.

Why wouldn’t he give each of us the same amount so that it doesn’t cause hard feelings? I know it’s his money to do with as he pleases and we’re lucky to get any at all, but knowing this has caused hurt feelings. We don’t feel comfortable asking him, but we’d like to understand. But you are right to try to minimize the impact on your little girl.

Do not allow her to be caught in the crossfire of your anger and her mom’s defensiveness.

In your interactions with your ex, think before you speak, count to 10 to mellow your tone and focus on the fact that YOU are the stabilizing force in your child’s life. It’s your job to remain strong and steady.

Avoid unregulated supplements for hypothyroidism Dear Doctor K: I have hypothyroidism. According to the Internet, there are several supplements that could help my symptoms.

Should I be taking a supplement along with my thyroid medicine?

Dear Reader: Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland (located in the front of the neck) doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. Every cell in the body needs thyroid hormone for normal function. When there is not enough hormone circulating in the blood, symptoms develop.

The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, constipation, weight gain and slowed heart rate. These symptoms can be very subtle, or they can be dramatic. For example, I have a super-energetic, upbeat friend who, about 20 years ago, started to get up later and come home from work earlier. She became grouchy and irritable. I figured she had developed depression, but what she had developed was hypothyroidism. Her symptoms disappeared within a week of starting treatment.

In contrast, as a medical student I was called to see a man who had been admitted to the hospital for a slow heart rate. And it was slow, indeed. The normal rate is 60 to 80 beats per minute, and his

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff was 35. In fact, everything about him was slow. He spoke a sentence very slowly, two seconds between every word: “Where ... is ... the ... bathroom?” He even laughed slowly. He had severe hypothyroidism.

The standard treatment is to take replacement doses of thyroid hormone – pills manufactured by drug companies. But, as several of my patients have pointed out, if you type the word “thyroid” into an Internet search engine, you’ll find a lot more: a sea of articles and advertisements promoting a range of supplements. Some supposedly improve thyroid health. Others even claim to cure hypothyroidism.

But these supplements have an unproven track record. In contrast to drugs produced by drug companies, the production of supplements is not closely regulated by the FDA. It gets worse. Many of these supplements contain potentially dangerous levels of thyroid hormone: an uncontrolled amount of the real hormone has been added to the supplement. Anyone taking

a high-dose supplement along with thyroid medication could end up suffering the harmful effects of having too much thyroid hormone in their system. The harmful effects include thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) and dangerous abnormal heart rhythms.

The most widely used supplements for thyroid health include those containing iodine, such as kelp. But more iodine does not cure hypothyroidism. In fact, a nutritional task force found that nearly all claims of supplements that supposedly enhance thyroid function are unproven.

Selenium may be an exception. Early studies show that it may prevent thyroid conditions from flaring after pregnancy.

But even these findings must be confirmed by additional research before doctors can recommend using selenium for the treatment or prevention of thyroid disease.

If you have hypothyroidism, take thyroid pills, not supplements. They are safer and more effective.

I was very excited about this honor and thought my parents would also be happy for me, but my dad has convinced my mom that the National Honor Society is a racist organization. Dear Nameless: The National Honor Society is a highly reputable organization, which selects members based only on their keen desire for learning and achievement, without regard to race, ethnicity or religion. In my many years as an educator, I have never encountered even the slightest hint of racism at the National Honor Society, and I support this superb organization 100 percent.

Dr. Wallace: What happens to kids who run away from home and are caught by the authorities? Are they taken to jail? Do they have a criminal record? I’m not planning to run away, but my best friend is.

Her problem is that her mother’s boyfriend, who lives with them, makes sexual advances toward my friend. My friend is only 14 years old, and her mom refuses to believe this is happening.

– Nameless, Providence, R.I. Dear Nameless: I’m so sorry to hear about your friend’s terrible dilemma. Too many teens are caught in such situations and feel they have no recourse but to run away. Sadly, this is never the right choice.

Although runaways are not charged with a crime (and if they are under 18, they’re returned to their parents

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace or guardians), running away usually plunges them into far more trouble than they were having at home. Runaways with no resources of their own are prey to all manner of predators on the road.

Your friend has recourses for ending the sexual advances that are far less drastic than running away from home. These involve alerting someone in authority such as a trusted teacher, school nurse or counselor. Positive action would be taken and the school would be obligated to contact law enforcement on her behalf.

Before anything this drastic occurs, I truly hope your friend’s mother wakes up and recognizes the problem – and kicks her male friend out of the house.

Dr. Wallace: Recently, I read an article in our paper saying that teens are more likely to use marijuana, alcohol and tobacco during the summer months.

Why do teens get into nasty habits during summer? – Barb, Orlando, Fla. Dear Barb: According to a recent YMCA survey, over 14 million young people are unsupervised outside of school. The number soars to over 42 million during the summer months.

This problem will never be totally eliminated, but more supervised public programs would do wonders to dwindle these disturbing statistics.

That is a good mantra for everybody, although no one wins all of the time.

In bridge, winning and losing tricks in the right order is often important. In this deal, after the most common auction of all, South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest heart four.

How should declarer play?

South has five top tricks: four spades and one heart. He also seems to have several establishable tricks: one or two in hearts, one or two in diamonds and three in clubs. What could go wrong?

Well, the original declarer, expecting the opening lead to be away from the king, played low from the board. He planned to win with his jack, drive out the club ace and coast home with at least one overtrick. However, South was sadly disappointed.

East produced the heart king, then accurately shifted to the diamond four.

When declarer drove out the club ace, West returned his second diamond and East took four tricks in the suit for down two.

Now let’s try winning the first trick and playing on clubs. What happens?

The contract succeeds. South has four spades, one heart and three clubs. If West leads back either red suit, declarer gains a ninth trick there. And if West returns a black suit, South plays a heart himself.

Yes, this line sacrifices an overtrick when West has the heart king, but those 30 points are paltry when compared to the 400 lost by going down instead of making.
