ST. CHARLES – As the drill teams from both St. Charles high schools participate in the annual Kick-A-Thon tonight, they hope to break the $1 million mark, according to a news release.

Approximate kick time is 6:30 p.m. at the St. Charles East High School football stadium before the varsity football game with St. Charles North High School.

Now in its 22nd year, the event has raised more than $878,000 since its inception, the release stated.

The event has numerous sponsors, including the Kane County Chronicle, and accepted donations online.

Coroner, County Board work to get bills paid

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – It appears the coroner and Kane County Board will avoid a legal battle over unpaid bills. Although members quibbled about the wording, the Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Thursday supported a measure that would lead to the payment of numerous invoices totaling $4,955.82.

“Either language gets the bills paid,” said Committee Chairman Cristina Castro, D-Elgin.

The committee also supported transferring $27,000 that was set aside for a vehicle to another fund, allowing Coroner Rob Russell to use that money for the delinquent invoices.

Russell said he would like the invoices paid as soon as possible. His office – which is projected to be $56,770 or 6.8 percent over budget – was affected by a resolution the County Board approved in July. It authorized the auditor to withhold approval for payment by the treasurer with any contracts, invoices or other claims projected to exceed a department’s or office’s budget.

Last month, Russell an-

nounced he initiated legal action against the auditor over the unpaid bills, but after Thursday’s actions, he said he doesn’t want to put the county through unnecessary court expenses.

Russell also sought a $56,065 budget adjustment to account for his anticipated overage, but the committee tabled the item.

“You still technically have two months,” Castro said, referring to the remainder of the county’s fiscal year. “I think this is premature.”

She and others said it is cus-

tomary to make budget adjustments at the end of the fiscal year, and it would be unfair to the other elected officials and department heads to make an exception for Russell.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen criticized Russell for not providing the committee with a written monthly report since December 2014. He said such reports would help the board members with decisions.

“You want the trust of this committee,” he said. “You have to give them the information.”

Oak trees are strong and can battle the tough winds that are so prevalent throughout the western suburbs.

Most grow considerably high so if you’re considering adding one to your yard, you’ll need to make sure you have enough space for the branches to grow.

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – About 150 people packed the lunchroom at Haines Middle School on Wednesday night for the first of 15 scheduled community meetings on proposed school closures in St. Charles School District 303.

In the two-hour session, Superintendent Don Schlomann explained the district is looking at options to cut costs in anticipation of getting less state money from Illinois, having the cost of teacher pensions be shifted from the state to the district and the possibility of a property tax freeze.

The district is considering three scenarios in which schools could be closed, as well as looking at the option of doing nothing.

“I paint a bleak picture,” Schlomann said. “It’s $18 million in lost revenue. I don’t think all three of those [scenarios] will happen. … I think two of the three will happen.”

The district also is in the midst of declining enrollment, Schlomann said.

The four options officials want the public to consider are: Do nothing; close Lincoln and Wasco elementary schools; close Haines, retrofit Thompson and move sixth grade to the elementary schools; close Wasco, Lincoln and Haines, retrofit and expand Thompson to 1,300 students, and keep sixth grade at the middle school.

“There is not enough savings in any of these plans to completely satisfy,” Schlomann said. “Even if two [scenarios] happen, we have to have other reductions.”

Closing Wasco and Lincoln would save $1.7 million a year, officials said.

If sixth-graders stayed another year at elementary schools, the curriculum would be the same, but they would have fewer educational opportunities, Schlomann said.

“I have parents say, ‘It’s my favorite option. I don’t believe my student will be ready for middle school,’ ” Schlomann said. “I have parents say, ‘My baby gets to stay at elementary another year.’ ” The basement classrooms and lunchrooms at Thompson also would be upgraded, and the school would be air-conditioned, he said. This option would save $2.8 million a year in operational costs.

Closing the two elementary schools and Haines, while retrofitting and expanding Thompson, would cost $45

million, but then would save $4.5 million a year. This option would require a referendum, Schlomann said.

Upgrading Thompson would take two years and would have to be done while the students were in school, he said.

Because the district’s demographics are changing, with more students coming from downtown St. Charles, Schlomann said officials also need to shift students to North High School as East High School has too many.

In answer to a parent’s question, Schlomann said another middle school option could be to raze both Haines and Thompson and build a new school for about $60 million, also requiring a referendum, Schlomann said.

Schlomann said Illinois was “dead last” in paying for schools but first in relying on property taxes for that.

“We try to maintain

above-average performance by our students with average spending,” Schlomann said.

“The board wants to preserve the programs but wants to be as sensitive as they can to the taxpayers.”

Schlomann said the timetable would be for continuing community meetings this month and in November. The administration would take it to the school board in December, and the board would choose an option in January.

Then from January to March, the district would work on attendance boundaries and staffing needs, Schlomann said.

••• After the presentation and question-and-answer period, several parents said they were not swayed. Among them were Lekshmi Venugopal and Girish Nair, who said they have children who would be affected by proposed school closures.

“I think there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered,” Venugopal said.

“And we are asked to make decisions with unanswered questions – which I don’t think is very fair. ... I don’t like the K-6 option at all. That causes more problems than it actually solves. It’s not taking into consideration the emotional health of the children, as well as their academics.”

Nair added he believes officials are moving too quickly.

“I think that they’re making a decision in haste,” Nair said. “They should wait and

Report: Former House Speaker Hastert to plead guilty lying to the FBI and agreeing to pay someone $3.5 million to hide claims of past misconduct, which the AP and others reported included claims of sexual misconduct.

Oswego Township Supervisor Jim Detzler has known Hastert since the early 1980s when the former speaker first was elected to the Illinois General Assembly.

Detzler said he still supports Hastert but hasn’t spoken to him since the indictment.

“Denny has always been a good supporter of mine, and he has helped me in a lot of different things, but I just really hate to see this happen to him,” Detzler said.

“If he pleads guilty to it, what does that do to him?”

SHAW MEDIA An attorney for former House Speaker Dennis Hastert has told a federal judge Hastert intends to plead guilty in a federal hush-money case, The Associated Press is reporting.

The AP is reporting attorney, John Gallo, asked the judge to set a date for a change of plea. The AP reported Gallo said Thursday he expects to have a written plea agreement by Monday but he did not mention any of the terms, including what counts the former speaker would plead guilty to.

Virginia graduated from Northside High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1932. Before she married, she worked a clerical job in her uncle’s law office. She

wed Robert E. Witmer, on April 28, 1944 in Marion, Indiana. They moved to Decatur, Illinois in 1952, where they spent the majority of their married life together. They were members of First United Methodist Church and South Side Country Club where they were both avid golfers. In 1989, they retired to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where they lived until 2002.

Virginia was a gifted pianist and played on the radio in the 1930s and 40s. She was an active member in her sorority and was a Silver Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League.

She also traveled to many parts of the world. She loved entertaining friends and was never happier than when her family was together.

She is survived by her daughter, Marsha (Jack) Wallace of St. Charles; 4 grandchildren, all of St. Charles, Brett Wallace, Lori (Jeff) Wray, Todd (Jen) Wallace and Troy (Amanda) Wallace; six great-grandchildren, one niece and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Witmer, in 2002; her parents, Raymond and Blanche (Halter) Byrd; a sister, Mildred (Byrd) Bojanoff; and one granddaughter, Amy Marie Wallace.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 3:30 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Geneva, East Campus, 2300 South Street, Geneva, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Geneva.

Additionally, Detzler mentioned he continues to have a hard time understanding the government’s case against Hastert.

“This laundering money … just seems squirrelly to

me,” he said.

Bob Evans, who taught and coached with Hastert at Yorkville High School in the 1970s, said a plea agreement would save taxpayers the expense of a trial.

“From that end, it’s probably good – let it die and there’s no surprise that was going to happen.

From the very beginning they said that,” he said.

Evans said he has not spoken with Hastert recently and considers the allegations against him “old news.”

Eleanor Schuett Johnson, age 97. Aunt Eleanor was born on May 18, 1918, in Aurora, Illinois, and died peacefully on October 14, 2015 at the home of her nephew, John Adams and his wife, Sandi.

Eleanor was the daughter of John and Nancy Schuett. She graduated from Geneva High School in 1936 and married the young man from the farm next door, Sigfried Johnson in May 1938. They enjoyed 55 years of barn dances, parades, picnics and trips to Wisconsin together until his death in 1993.

Eleanor was proud to have worked for DuKane Corporation (formerly Opera Radio) for 50 years, where she made a number of wonderful friends. She was part of the team that worked to develop sonar for the Navy during WWII. All of her life was spent in the Geneva and Batavia area.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Sigfried; her sisters, Irene (Oliver) Leppert, Dorothy (Roger) Chamberlain, Sally (Norman Adams, Philip Talbot); and her brother, Ray (Shirley) Schuett.

Eleanor and Sig had no children of their own, but created countless family memories with their many nieces and nephews of the Schuett and Johnson families.

Others affectionately called her “Aunt” Eleanor, because she viewed all friends as family.

Eleanor’s other family was her church family. She joined the United Methodist Church of Geneva in 1934 at the age of 16, where she has been a loyal member for 81 years.

This is where Eleanor will lie in state beginning at 1:00 P.M Sunday with funeral to follow at 2:00 on Sunday, October 18, 2015, at United Methodist Church of Geneva. Interment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Evans: Plea agreement would 9 save taxpayers expense of trial

LOCAL BRIEFS Part of Dugan Road to be closed beginning today

SUGAR GROVE – The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced the south leg of Dugan Road at the intersection with Route 30 will be closed beginning, weather permitting, today.

A detour will be posted utilizing Route 30, Jericho Road, Granart Road and Route 47.

Vehicles weighing more than 10 tons are not allowed to use Dugan Road south of Bucktail Lane, according to a news release.

The closure is expected to remain place until late November.

The closure is part of the ongoing intersection improvements being made at Route 30

and Dugan Road.

That project is slated to end in January.

Kaneland Arts Initiative opening 2015-16 season

MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland Arts Initiative is opening its 2015-16 season with an event celebrating education.

“SHOUT OUT! for education” is a series of live readings written and read by individuals sharing their educational experiences.

It’s not. It’s … going to affect thousands of middle schoolers and will affect the community at large.”

Nair also said the disruption could affect the district’s reputation, and fewer people would be willing to move to St. Charles.

“I like options one and two because they are the least disruptive to all the kids,” Nair said. “But three and four – I can’t understand the logic behind spending $40 million to save $4 million. If I told you, ‘If you pay me $40 million, I’ll give you $4 million every [year],’ would you take the deal?”

A parent, David Reid, said

he did not like any of the options.

“I’d like to start with option number one, which is, give me the truth. I don’t think any of the options up there were the truth,” Reid said. “For the citizens of St. Charles to make a sound decision, we have to be doing that based on good information. I don’t think we had good information then.

I don’t think we’re getting good information now. I think there is a little bit of a scare tactic going on here.”

A grandparent, Paul Dailey, said his reaction is to have another option for when many of the district’s current building bonds will expire.

Schlomann said when these are paid off in three years, the taxes on a $300,000 home would see a $500 drop in property taxes.

Dailey said the district should use that money to “get rid of two dinosaurs – Haines and Thompson. Get rid of both

of them, [and] build a new school.”

“I think they should take option one and rethink this thing,” Dailey added. “In a year from now or a year and a half from now – yes, they would have to come out with a referendum – but they will be able to say, ‘We’ll have a brandnew school where Thompson and Haines were. We got rid of the old schools, and your taxes will not change.’ … What is best for this community is a brand-new school.”

Dailey said he does not support closing Lincoln or Wasco schools.

“He said all the growth is downtown, so why get rid of Lincoln when it’s downtown?”

Dailey said. “And Wasco is still a fine little school.”

It’s a fun time to get creative with party foods; if you’re hosting a get-together this haunted holiday, here are five easy Halloween party treats to serve your guests.

1. Spider pizza bagel bites: layer mini bagels, pizza sauce, and mozzarella cheese on a baking sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Put a whole pitted olive of your choice in the center of each bagel. Thinly slice an additional olive to make “legs”, and place around the spider’s body.

2. Continuing the spider theme, make chocolate/oatmeal no-bake cookies (recipe on Food.com) in two sizes, for each body and head. Use pretzel sticks for legs, and mini M&Ms for eyes.

3. Nothing keeps the chill away like a hearty soup. Hollow out a 6” pumpkin the way

you would a jack-o-lantern. Rub olive oil, then salt and pepper all around the inside of each pumpkin, then place on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. When cool, use it to hold your favorite chili or soup! (And save the seeds to roast).

4. Rice Krispie treats are quick and easy, and the recipe is right on the cereal box! When ingredients are mixed, roll out flat on waxed paper with a buttered rolling pin. Use Halloween themed cookie cutters to cut shapes, and decorate with tube icing, red hots, and other fun candies.

5. Toss some Vic’s half-salt popcorn with peanuts, candy corn, Reese’s Pieces, or any of your favorite add-ins.

Surprise, Hardees closes doors after 18 months

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Hardee’s, located at 107 N. Batavia Ave., quietly closed this week. The store had taken over the former Burger King location 18 months ago.

“They kind of sneakily closed in the middle of the night from Tuesday to Wednesday,” Batavia Chamber of Commerce President Holly Deitchman said.

The news came as a surprise to Mayor Jeff Schielke, as well.

“They didn’t bother to call me and tell me anything,” Schielke said. “None of the city staff seemed to know anything, either. It’s disappointing.”

Jamie Saam, executive director of Batavia MainStreet, said she was there two weeks ago asking about trick-ortreating for BatFest and was told a manager would get back to her.

“It was kind of a surprise,” Saam said about the restaurant closing.

A voicemail message left for the restaurant chain’s media spokeswoman was not immediately returned Thursday.

are steering away from fast food burgers and more toward the local restaurants and “ma and pa” eateries.

“People don’t want regular fast food burgers anymore,” Saam said. “They’re going out to spend their dollars, supporting the local restaurants.”

Saam added perhaps a Mediterranean, shawarma or falafel-type cuisine would add to the existing variety in Batavia.

Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish of garlicky meat or poultry served on pitas, according to Cooking Light’s website, www.cookinglight. com.

That people want more ethnic variety is supported by the customers who go to Tusk Thai, Saam said, adding it is frequently packed.

Deitchman said perhaps another type of ethnic cuisine adding more diversity to food choices in the area would work.

“That is not to say there isn’t room for all food options in Batavia, but it’s finding that right niche right now that seems to be challenging,” Deitchman said. “Whatever is going into that spot will have to fill a niche or a need that isn’t already being served here. We are very welcoming to all types of restaurants.”

ST. CHARLES – Changes appear to be afoot for Ray’s Evergreen Tavern, which has been closed since last month.

During a city update luncheon Wednesday, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said it is his understanding that “somebody new will gut the place and redo it.” The name might also change, he said.

“Stay tuned on that one,” Rogina said.

Tina Nilles, an administrative assistant with the city, said Thursday that a liquor license application is expected, but none has been submitted for the property at 1400 W. Main St. The liquor license for Ray’s is not transferable because such licenses no longer exist once the businesses they are associated with close, she said.

Ray’s has offered little explanation about its closure, and attempts to talk with the owner were unsuccessful. A handwritten sign taped to the door indicated the closure was temporary and directed customers to its Facebook page for updates.

In a Facebook post from Sept. 13 – the last update – the establishment apologized to its friends and patrons. It referenced issues with the Department of Revenue and intentions to reopen.

“To put rumors to the rest we were not shut down for any [liquor] violations or anything like that,” according to the post. “I’ll be posting updates and keeping everyone informed with the reopening date. Thank you for your support on this trying time for us.”

Making the best of encryption – without forgetting the risks THE WASHINGTON POST The Obama administration’s decision not to seek legislation requiring technology companies to give law enforcement access to encrypted communications on smartphones has a certain logic.

In this age of hacking and cyberintrusion, encryption can keep most people safer.

But the decision also carries risks. Encryption can give a tiny band of criminals and terrorists a safe haven.

The United States now must make the most of the useful side of encryption, but without losing sight of the risks.

FBI Director James B. Comey warned last year that law enforcement might be “going dark” because technology companies, including Apple and Google, are introducing ways for users to send encrypted messages by smartphones that can be unlocked only by the users, not by the companies. Comey was alarmed this would give criminals and terrorists a place to communicate that was beyond the reach even of law enforcement with a court order. Comey suggested Congress require tech companies to provide what is known as extraordinary access to encrypted information, a “lawful intercept” capability, sometimes referred to as a backdoor, or a special key for the government. We sympathized with Comey’s appeal and urged all sides to look for a compromise.

No compromise was forthcoming. The reaction to Comey’s suggestion in the technology world was a strong protest that any weakening of encryption – even a tiny bit, for a good reason – creates a vulnera-

bility for all. The firms also made the argument that encryption can be a positive force in today’s chaotic world of cyberattacks; their customers want absolute privacy, too, for the digital lives held on the smartphones in their pockets.

They also pointed out that if backdoor access is granted to the U.S. government, it will provide cover for authoritarian governments such as China and Russia to demand the same or worse.

Comey said last week that private talks with the tech companies have been “increasingly productive.”

That is promising. There are methods the FBI might use to crack encryption case by case or to find the information elsewhere. The FBI – and state and local law enforcement – are most in need; the National Security Agency has much stronger tools for breaking encryption overseas.

Having stood up to Comey, Silicon Valley should demonstrate the same fortitude when it comes to China and Russia and absolutely refuse to allow intrusions by these and other police states.

It would help, too, if President Obama articulated the principle loud and clear.

That leaves a nagging worry. The United States is a rule-of-law nation, and encryption technology is creating a space that is in some ways beyond the reach of the law. Encryption may indeed be valuable to society if it protects the majority.

But what if it enables or protects the 1 percent who are engaged in criminality or terrorism? That threat has to be taken into account, and so far it remains unresolved.

It will not go away.

Vikings have shown ability to come through in late-game situations

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – While the Geneva football team comes into tonight’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship game with Batavia unbeaten, it certainly hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the Vikings.

Twice this season, quarterback Sean Chambers has put together touchdown drives late in the fourth quarter to preserve the zero in the loss column. With another close game expected, with the pressure of a conference title, in a contest that is one of the most hyped games ever in this rivalry, the Vikings don’t seem fazed.

“We’ve taken the preparation and this week’s matchup just as we have with any game this year,” running back Justin Taormina said. “We haven’t treated it any different.

We’ve done the same things on the same days, just as we have throughout this season. I know once it’s here we will be a little more hyped up, but we just want to stay calm and not let our emotions get the best of us.”

It seems as though the Vikings have done that time and time again this season when games are on the line. When St. Charles North running back Eric Lins broke off an 80-yard touchdown run, putting the Vikings a little over three minutes from a potential first loss in Week 4, Chambers smiled.

He looked at wide receiver Jack Wassel and said, “Let’s go win this football game.” So they did.

Chambers found Ryan Skibinski for a touchdown inside the final minute to stay unbeaten. Skibinski was also the beneficiary of the game-winning score against St. Charles East in Week 6, when the Vikings fought past

“I don’t know what it is, but we have never really panicked, or looked at it as being, you know, ‘If we don’t do it here, we lose,’ type of thing,” Chambers said. “Everyone here has so much confidence in one another to execute a great game plan we have every week. There’s never a doubt, no matter who we are playing, that we can win any game. It’s not going to change whether it’s Batavia, or anyone.”

Coach Rob Wicinski said he has never beaten Batavia

in his 16-plus seasons at Geneva. Well, that’s not true, but he meant it in an Xs and Os way.

He doesn’t believe that Batavia has ever beaten him, nor does he feel that his team has ever beaten the Bulldogs.

The losing team always beats itself, in Wicinski’s mind, and although Geneva hasn’t been on the winning end of the rivalry since 2010, he senses something different about the 2015 Vikings.

“There’s something special about this group,” Wicinski said. “I’m not sure exactly what it is, and I don’t like to compare them to my other teams, but I’ll tell you what, heading into this season with some new faces, we weren’t sure how they would react once the lights went on. But the guys have handled their business and shown a lot of grit.”

A balanced offensive at-

tack, with timely defensive and special teams plays along the way, have kept the Vikings perfect heading into tonight’s showdown.

Taormina and Chambers were just a couple of the players that were on last year’s Geneva team that fell to the Bulldogs, 26-20, as part of the 29 straight games that Batavia has won in the River Division.

It has been an all too familiar sight for Geneva to see a zero in Batavia’s conference record over the years, and the Vikings feel this is the group that’s going to put the Bulldogs’ run to bed.

There really is no need to amp this one up any more, although Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said he can’t remember any recent entry in this series receiving more hype than tonight’s game.

Everything is on the line for the Bulldogs, who have the much talked about 29-game UEC River win streak, and the Vikings, who remained unbeaten this year after beating Glenbard East last week. The Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship is up for grabs in this winnertake-all matchup.

Batavia coach Dennis Piron expects nothing less than a game that will be talked about for a long time.

“They’ve got playmakers, we’ve got playmakers and it’s going to be a great game,” said Piron, who hasn’t lost a River game in his four-plus years as head coach. “There’s nothing quite like this environment, and I know our kids are excited to get out there and play in a game that we hope

is one that people talk about for years to come.”

The marquee matchup

This game features two of the better quarterbacks in the area in Geneva’s Sean Chambers and Batavia’s Kyle Niemiec. If both are provided time, it could turn into a shootout, as both have weapons galore.

Although both excel in their play-making abilities when the pocket breaks down, it will be important to give them time and protect them in the pocket.

“They’re going to bring pressure, and we have to be able to handle it,” Wicinski said. “If we can give Sean some time, we might be able to get some guys loose. On the other side, they have a big offensive line and if they want to go toe-to-toe and start smash-mouthing, that’ll be interesting to see how we handle that.”

Although both teams have strong running backs, in Justin Taormina (Geneva) and Zach

“Zippy” Garrett (Batavia), when the final buzzer sounds, I think whichever quarterback has more time to throw will come out victorious.

The X-factor

There’s no doubt the energy will be electric. Well, at least it should be as Wicinski joked to players, “Shame on you” if there’s not.

While being amped up is one thing, taking the field and controlling the emotion of a game like this will be invaluable.

“That’s huge. I always tell the guys you need to get in that mindset of a good business attitude, but you’re also flying,” Wicinski said. “The guys have all played sports long enough and usually it’s not an issue. It’s difficult to play well in this game, so staying level-headed is going to be important.”

“We expect there to be a lot of momentum swings and trying to control them will be big,” Piron said. “We actually, in my time

here, have played better in big games on the road than we have at home, so the atmosphere and being too amped up isn’t something that concerns me too much. The guys have had the right mentality in these games and we’re excited.”

Batavia will have to get pressure on Chambers and change up defensive looks.

There isn’t anything Geneva will do that Batavia hasn’t seen, and vice-versa. These two teams know just about everything about each other, so giving Chambers looks he hasn’t seen or isn’t expecting could prove vital.

Best case-scenario for the Vikings

Be ready for anything. In a couple of big games this season, Piron has pulled out onside kicks, trick plays, etc. Geneva needs to be prepared to see just

about anything with the River Division title on the line. Between that and limiting the big plays between Niemiec and go-to weapon Canaan Coffey, Geneva will hang with the Bulldogs if that goes accordingly. I don’t expect either team to hold anything back with the setting tonight will present.

Chris Casey’s prediction

Geneva 41, Batavia 38 Streak over. Call it an upset if you’d like, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this score is flipped, or even higher-scoring, but I’m going with Geneva, at home, to remain unbeaten and end the Batavia conference winning streak. This one very well could come down to the last possession, and I think it will. I’ll take the “underdog” for the win, although I expect both programs to make deep runs into November.

It’s been said a few times already, but we’ll say it one more time this season: For St. Charles East to get in the playoffs, it will need to beat a fellow Tri-Cities school, and its final chance comes tonight. St. Charles North heads to Norris Stadium for what will be another highly anticipated game in the UEC River, albeit between two much different teams.

Although both schools fell out of the conference race with losses to Geneva and Batavia, there is still much importance with this contest. The Saints sit at three wins, needing the final two victories to be eligible for a playoff berth, while the North Stars seek an automatic bid into the postseason with a win.

“I think all year we’ve believed in our guys, and they’re starting to believe in themselves at the right time,” East coach Bryce Farquhar said. “We just have to go out and finish. That’s been our code for the week ... to go finish what we started.”

By MATT BEARDMORE editorial@kcchronicle.com Sean Masoncup said he knew Eve Tubman wasn’t returning next spring as an assistant for the St. Charles North boys tennis team, but he had no idea a few months ago he’d be taking over for her as the North Stars’ girls tennis coach this fall.

This unexpected coaching change so close to the start of the season could have been detrimental to the North Stars’ performance the past two months, but North has embraced this transition, become a closer group because of it and is peaking at just the right time with the St. Charles East sectional starting today.

“This is really her squad,” Masoncup said of Tubman, the girls varsity coach for the past six seasons. “She was planning on finishing with the girls (this season) and then move to Atlanta, but her house sold in two days and it didn’t make sense for her to stay. “(Tubman is) real proud of them and wishes she could have finished off the season,” added Masoncup, who has texted with the former coach after nearly every weekend meet this season and spoke with her after last weekend’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division Tournament.

St. Charles North girls tennis athlete Morgan Rerko credited coach Sean Masoncup for helping the team jell this fall. said she and her teammates assumed Tubman would be back this fall, but when a few of the girls received calls and texts from her this summer confirming she was leaving, the group had no choice but to look forward.

“I think that brought us together,” Rerko said of the coaching change. “Masoncup came in and brought the team together.”

Senior Emma Spellman, who teams with Rerko at No. 1 doubles for North, had a good idea of the style Masoncup would bring to the team after watching him coach her brother, Grant, now a sophomore playing club tennis at Stanford, for four seasons.

“I knew (Masoncup) was a great coach and very motivational,” said Spellman, who recently was named a National Merit Semifinalist.

“He’s really been very sup-

portive of us.”

This unexpected pairing of coach and team has generated plenty of positive results on the court, as the North Stars are coming off arguably their best performance of the season, sweeping the four doubles title matches at the UEC River Tournament and winning the event by a 35-32 margin over Geneva.

While St. Charles North couldn’t overcome the fourpoint edge the Vikings held heading into the event by virtue of conference dual meet records, a second-place overall conference finish – one point shy of Geneva’s winning total of 66 – was clearly a step in the right direction for a program that took fourth in each of the last two seasons.

“I think we played great during the tournament,” Masoncup said, “and I’m

real optimistic that we can qualify some doubles teams to state.”

That’s the goal for Rerko and fellow senior Brittany Rohrsen, who will be partnered at sectionals after Rerko and Spellman won first doubles at the conference meet. Rohrsen and Breanne Warner, a junior, broke serve to close out their straight sets title match victory at No. 2 doubles.

The Rerko-Rohrsen pairing split its four matches at last season’s state meet after helping the North Stars finish third at the St. Charles East sectional with 18 points.

“Last year, we weren’t sure how state would go or if we’d even qualify,” Rerko said. “Now I have the confidence we can do well at sectionals. I think with the state experience and the motivation, we can get there again.”

Spellman is also hoping

for a second consecutive state meet berth after she and then-senior Lianne Anderson advanced to the consolation third round last season. This year, Spellman will line up with standout freshman Shelby Thomas, who Masoncup called the North Stars’ top singles player.

“It’s a little difficult playing with Morgan for the majority of the season then with Shelby on the weekend,” Spellman said. “(Shelby is) a singles player and excels at singles and I’m a doubles player, but she’s very good at the baseline and that works well with me at the net.”

It’s worked so well with Masoncup this season, that no matter what happens this weekend or at the state meet, the returning North Stars know what to expect in 2016 – aside from raised expectations.

“I will be coming back for sure next season,” Masoncup said.

While backing from the ACS student body has been helpful, the pair also credits family. Whether Johnson and Jurasek advance from sectionals to the state tournament set for Oct. 22 through 24, making another round of morning announcements, they know they’ll always be strongly received at home.

“We have a lot of support from the moms,” Jurasek said, “and we wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

Jurasek laughed when asked if her mother, Kathy, played tennis. Not so much, it turns out. Robin Johnson could well play the role of marathon mom this weekend if the timing works out. Her son, Devin, an ACS junior, is part of the field at this weekend’s IHSA Class 1A boys golf state tournament at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.

“It’s hard to be a mom and a coach. I will say that for sure,” Robin Johnson said.

Five years a doubles tandem, Shelby Johnson and Madie Jurasek met at a junior girls tennis tournament well before they were Aurora Christian freshmen.

As their opposition and playing locales changed, the duo’s camaraderie remained constant, an asset they hope will boost them during this weekend’s IHSA Waubonsie Valley Sectional.

“We just have a lot of fun together since we’re best friends,” Johnson said. “We balance each other out when we’re playing. We knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which helps.”

Johnson, from Geneva, and Jurasek, from Sugar Grove, represented Aurora Christian while playing Rosary’s dual schedule this season. ACS does not have enough athletes to field a full team, but athletic director Dan Beebe worked in conjunction with the IHSA to get the pair approved for competition. Beebe officially is listed as the Eagles’ coach, but Johnson’s mother, Robin, worked to gain IHSA certification as an assistant and has attended more duals this fall.

“Just from going to Shelby’s matches and lessons, I feel like that’s where I’ve gotten my knowledge from,” Robin Johnson said. “They needed an assistant, so I was going to be going anyway to get certified.”

CHARLES – The 30th annual St. Charles Scarecrow Fest saw thousands of residents and visitors from across the state and around the country converge on St. Charles from Oct. 9 to Sunday, a news release from the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau stated.

Many who attended the festival voted for their favorite handmade scarecrows from the more than 100 entries that were on display.

Steve Martin, a board member for the visitors bureau, presided over the closing ceremonies at the festival, where St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina and Tom Hansen of St. Charles Bank and Trust presented the contest awards Sunday.

‘The Mirror’

By Marti Dautel, a St. Charles resident Mirror, mirror on the wall, you are not my friend, not at all.

First a strand, then a clump, finally handfuls, all in the dump.

I see a new face, a different head, cover it with a scarf, maybe red.

The turban’s on, ribbons of color tied on tight, going out in public, hoping it looks just right.

After my shower, my eyes drift down, seeing my chest, I have tears and a frown.

Scars, lumps, colors and a lopsided look, a reminder of what the cancer took.

The worst part, you cannot see, because the pain and rage is inside of me.

I keep it all buried, oh, so deep, but it comes out at times, even in my sleep.

I can’t be brave all the time, pretending to others I’m just fine.

Transfusions, chemo, surgery and radiation all are done, it’s been a year and months since I’ve had fun.

Family and friends helped me along the way, their prayers and caring got me to the next day.

Mirror, mirror, broken on the floor, you’re not my friend, I’m out the door.

There are many reasons why labor may be induced rather than waiting for it to begin on its own. These include concerns about the mother’s or baby’s health.

Oxytocic medicines may be used to induce or speed up labor. The one most commonly used is called oxytocin (Pitocin). It is used to help contractions begin if there aren’t any. It also is used to increase the frequency of contractions when fewer occur naturally.

The dose of oxytocin will be adjusted to allow relaxation between contractions. Relaxation is needed to ensure a fetus receives enough oxygen during labor.

If the fetal heart rate suggests the baby is not getting enough oxygen, the oxytocin dose may be reduced or stopped.

Prostaglandins are given to help with the process of inducing labor. If you need this type of drug, your vital signs (heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure) will be closely monitored.

For most of human history, women simply gave birth; there were no medicines for pain or to speed labor. Today, we have medicines and tools for monitoring what is happening with both the mother and the baby, and that allows the doctor to safely adjust the doses of the medicines used. Be glad that your first baby will arrive in the 21st century.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-yearold girl and live with my dad and my 13-year-old brother.

Our mother died four years ago. I love my dad very much, and I know how difficult it has been for him to be both parents to two active teenagers.

My dad told me that I could start dating when I turned 16, so I started dating this past summer. My boyfriend is captain of the football team, a member of the honor society and an Eagle Scout.

He is a great guy and a perfect gentleman, and I really like him.

idea to have a chat with your father. Start out by telling him that you love him and would never violate the trust he has in you. Spell out your date’s good points, emphasizing that he respects your high moral standards and would never be aggressive. Tell your father that you will invite your boyfriend over to your house early for your next date so that he can have a chance to get to know him. The better Dad gets to know him the more he will trust him with the love of his life – you.

And make sure your father reads this column. It will go a long way in convincing him how mature you really are.

this is a very unusual situation. I dated Justin for over a year, but we were not going steady. Then about six months ago, I met a nice guy named Ryan, and we have been dating semi-regularly ever since.

My problem is I like both of them very much, and to complicate matters more, both of them say that they love me. This is not “puppy love,” because all of us are 18 years old. I feel these guys are competing for me and this makes me very confused and grouchy. Please help. I don’t know which one to choose. –

Can you tell me about medications that may be used during childbirth?

Will they pose any risks to my baby?

Dear Reader : Many medications can be given for pain relief during childbirth. Other drugs may be given to assist your labor.

The pain medicines may not stop pain completely, but they will greatly lessen it. Narcotics such as meperidine (Demerol) are frequently used to relieve labor pain. If a baby is born soon after a mother receives any narcotic, the baby’s rate of breathing may be slower than normal at birth. This effect generally is short-term.

If it occurs, it can be reversed with an anti-narcotic drug.

Anesthetics are medications given during labor to numb you from the waist down. They do not put you to sleep. Anesthetics can be given as an epidural or a spinal injection.

Epidural anesthesia is the most common type used for pain relief during labor. But because it numbs you from the waist down, it can prolong your labor or diminish your ability to push out your baby.

It numbs the nerves that do the pushing, as well as the nerves that feel pain. This may lead your doctor to use a vacuum or forceps to help deliver your baby. Spinal anesthesia is used as an alternative to epidural or general anesthesia when cesarean delivery is needed.

Epidural medications can lower your blood pressure; they also can slow the baby’s heartbeat temporarily. If this happens, raising your blood pressure with fluids or medication will almost always fix the problem.

Dear Abby: I’m on the verge of 30, and my fiancé has a huge issue with the fact that I still cuddle with my mom.

From what he says, his family isn’t wild about it, either.

Mom has suffered a great deal of loss in her life. She has lost all of her immediate family (aside from her kids) to cancer. We were all caretakers for these family members, doing in-home hospice, and we have formed a unique bond.

My fiancé has never even been to a funeral, so it’s hard for me to explain this to him.

Mom was born in a country in Europe where hugging and lots of affection are natural.

I live out of state, but when I’m home I will put my head on Mom’s shoulder and cuddle with her while watching a movie. Sometimes in the morning I’ll bring her a hot cup of coffee, put it next to her bed, and jump in with her and her dog. We joke, laugh, cuddle until we have to get up. In today’s deal, South is in four hearts. West starts the defense with three rounds of diamonds. East plays high-low, then ruffs dummy’s queen with the heart 10. What should declarer do?

It is unappealing to open one club with only three low cards in the suit, but with 13 high-card points, one cannot pass. (For those of you who use the Support Double, North’s twoheart rebid guarantees four-card support. With only three hearts, North would double over two diamonds.)

South, assuming trumps are not 4-0, seems to have only three losers: two diamonds and one club. It looks easy to overruff at trick three, draw trumps, and claim. Here, though, there is a nasty surprise waiting for declarer. He suddenly finds that he has a trump loser and goes down one.

South should realize that whatever happens, he will lose a club trick – so why not concede it now? Instead of overruffing, declarer should discard his club eight. Then everything is under control.

Don’t overruff when it might result in an opponent gaining a trump trick and you have an inevitable loser to discard.
