STC North alumnus Jeffery Austin wins ‘The Voice’ battle round, advances

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North High School alumnus competing on NBC’s “The Voice” singing competition has made it through another round of cuts.

Jeffery Austin, 24, sang a duet of singer The Weeknd’s song “Can’t Feel My Face” with fellow contestant Noah Jackson on the episode that aired Tuesday night.

No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani coaches Austin and Jackson on the show, and she picked Austin as the winner of the round.

“I can’t believe how far you’ve come,” Stefani said to Austin during the Tuesday broadcast.

Only a few seconds from Austin and Jackson’s performance were shown as part of a montage on the show.

After Austin’s win aired, he tweeted he was ready for the next level of the competition called the knockout rounds.

During this stage, Austin will get to select his own song to sing while he competes against another member of Stefani’s team.

Austin graduated from St. Charles North High School in 2009.

LOCAL BRIEFS Temporary files at Geneva school district, at which point they may be destroyed, the HS to be destroyed GENEVA – The temporary files for all students in the Geneva High School Class of 2010 will be destroyed during the week of Nov. 2, a news release from Geneva School District 304 stated.

Temporary records are maintained for five years following graduation, transfer or permanent withdrawal from a

release stated.

State law mandates a student’s record belongs to the student at age 18.

Students who wish to pick up their file must do so in person and present a photo ID. Students also may provide a parent with written permission and a photocopy of an ID for the file to be released.

Rogina aims for change on old St. Charles Mall site “Everyone’s walking in with their hand out.”

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – During a luncheon Wednesday, Mayor Ray Rogina teased attendees with several economic developments, as well as his personal goal for a prominent piece of real estate on the city’s west side – the former St. Charles Mall site.

The 30-acre parcel was the focus of much debate in 2010, when the City Council voted against Sho-Deen’s plans for a town center featuring retailers, restaurants, office space, entertainment facilities and residential units.

Noting the city has engaged Sho-Deen, Rogina said he wants something to begin on the property in 2016. Whatever plan is pursued likely will include mixed uses, as pure residential development wouldn’t work, he said.

“Stay tuned on that one,” Rogina told those gathered at the Royal Fox Country Club for the city of St. Charles’ update luncheon.

The event was presented by the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee.

Rogina also hinted at developments at Charlestowne Mall, which is to be relaunched next year as The Quad St. Charles. Although

Dan Stellato First Ward alderman leasing continues to be a challenge, he said, The Krausz Companies remains “fully committed” to the site, and there is “strong interest” in the out lots.

Other upcoming additions to St. Charles include a CVS Pharmacy at 14th Street and Route 38; Fox Valley Volkswagen relocating from West Chicago by late June or early July 2016; and a proposal from Corporate Reserve about 78 single-family homes on the city’s west side, Rogina said.

Aldermen in 2012 quashed plans for apartments on the Corporate Reserve site, which is between Peck and Randall roads north of Route 64.

First Ward Alderman Dan Stellato, who presented with Rogina, said the city might offer incentives to companies and developers to win or keep their business. He said it is common practice in today’s market and detailed some recent examples.

“Everyone’s walking in with their hand out,” he said.

THE RUGGED BEAUTY OF THE OAK Oak Awareness Month celebrated in Illinois

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Valerie Blaine has lived on the West Coast among the redwood trees but she said they didn’t compare to the rugged beauty of the oak.

“There’s nothing like a big, old oak tree in the Midwest,” said Blaine, the nature programs manager for the Kane County Forest Preserve District. “They’re really stalwart trees. … They represent

strength, I think.”

This month, the oak is being celebrated in what Gov. Bruce Rauner has proclaimed OAKtober – Oak Awareness Month, which the Kane County Board supported Tuesday with a resolution. The designation was intended to encourage organizations and individuals statewide to recognize the importance of oaks and oak ecosystems.

“Much of the state is dependent on oak ecosystems,” said

Jan Sorensen, a native plants specialist at Wasco Nursery and Garden Center in Campton Hills. “The wildlife depends on the oaks and the plants that grow with them. The soils were developed by oaks and the plants that grow with them.”

But, she and Blaine said, oaks have been reduced by settlement and are being threatened by invasive species that block the sunlight oak saplings need.

Local Oak Awareness Month events include a free OAKtober Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Wasco Nursery.

Sorensen said it will include tree identification, children’s activities, speakers and information about planting oaks.

It’s important for property owners to have plant diversity not only for disease-prevention purposes, she said, but also because different pollinators depend on different

species and plants.

Also from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, a Mighty Oaks of Kane County program is planned at the Dick Young Forest Preserve near Batavia. It is free, but registration is requested.

Visitors may go on a guided hike featuring oaks and learn how to identify the different species.

The white oak is the state tree.

Other forest preserves with oak populations include LeRoy Oakes, Hannaford Woods, Tekakwitha Woods, Johnson’s Mound and Bliss Woods, Blaine said.

“I think people take for granted oak trees a lot,” she said. “When you realize oaks are having such a difficult time regenerating – creating the next generation – will our kids see mature oak trees?”

Basement fire causes $25K in damage to home KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – A fire Wednesday morning caused $25,000 in damage to the structure and property of a home at 38W149 Hickory Court in Batavia Township, according to a news release issued by the Batavia Fire Department.

The release indicated firefighters were dispatched at 8:04 a.m. Wednesday, and the first unit arrived at the scene

at 8:11 a.m. The release indicated upon arrival, firefighters found light white smoke showing from the rear of the home.

“The homeowners were out of the structure and advised fire crews that the fire was in the basement and access would be difficult due to the large volume of items stored in the home, including the basement,” the release stated.

The release indicated the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Sonin, 17, and sophomore Jacob Rollins, for example, each portray more than one character. Rollins is not only playing the role of cousin Jeff, he said, but also the older variant of the character Patrick in the school’s production of “Auntie Mame.”

“It’s a funny show,” the 15-year-old said during rehearsals Wednesday.

The show – which opens tonight – is about a boy who was raised conservative before living with his liberal-based aunt in the 1920s, Rollins said.

It should also be pointed out that blurry vision is one of the first warning signs of diabetes. “Diabetic retinopathy” is the term that describes retinal disorders caused by diabetes, including “macular edema” and “proliferative retinopathy.” Macular edema is swelling of the “macula,” the central part of the retina that is responsible for sharp vision. As the macula swells, wavy and blurred vision may occur.

Proliferative retinopathy involves leakage of blood vessels into the central portion of the eye, which also causes blurry vision.

P.S. While blurry vision may seem to be no more than an annoyance, it should be checked out and its cause found because it could indicate a very serious underlying condition.

Local U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, whose name has circulated among House Republicans as a possible candidate for House speaker, said he has no interest in the position.

Roskam, R-Wheaton, said Tuesday he, like many of his fellow Republicans, hopes his friend, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, gives in and runs.

Ryan, who was Mitt Romney’s running mate in 2012, publicly has made clear he does not want the job, but is under significant pressure to change his mind.

BATAVIA – The family behind a longtime St. Charles business is considering opening a second location in the Tri-Cities.

Blue Goose Market President Paul Lencioni said he is taking a “serious” look at the Batavia Plaza shopping center as the location for a second Blue Goose Market grocery store.

The address would be 138 W. Wilson St. in Batavia. The Walgreens store at that site is going to move to a new building under construction next

Goose brand. He began considering the Batavia site after ongoing discussions with his friend and BEI Vice President Austin Dempsey.

BEI, or Batavia Enterprises, owns Batavia Plaza.

Along with St. Charles, Lencioni calls Batavia his hometown because he attended Batavia High School for his junior and senior year in the early 1990s. The Batavia location would be a full-service store and offer quality products at affordable prices, Lencioni said.

Even with the existence of the Berkeley Finer Foods grocery store directly east of downtown Batavia, Lencioni said there is enough research to indicate Blue Goose could be successful in Batavia Plaza.

“Everybody is really encouraging,” Lencioni said.

Ooh La La Chocolate 5K promises sweet end to charity run

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Zellmer Childhood Disease Foundation is hosting the Ooh La La Chocolate 5K Run to raise scholarship money for a culinary arts program for a graduating senior who has Type 1 diabetes.

The foundation, which was started by Paul and Mary Agnes Zellmer after their son, James, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 6, has raised money for diabetes research, as well as scholarships that directly affect people with diabetes, the couple said.

The Geneva Committee of the Whole approved the Zellmers’ request for police services,

“We do scholarships for camp and for college for diabetics. We are looking to create a scholarship for people with mental illness who have that well under control. That’s a need that we see.”

“The foundation started out about 10 years ago selling pumpkins at Mill Creek Golf Club,” Paul Zellmer said.

“From there, we became a [tax deductible charity] about three years ago and hosted the Pumpkins for a Cure festival in the downtown.”

The foundation also hosts Bowling for Diabetes in West Chicago, he said.

His son, James Zellmer, also works as a dishwasher at the All Chocolate Kitchen.

The winning applicant is guaranteed a $2,500 scholarship, but Mary Agnes Zellmer said if they get they get at least 120 runners, that will be enough to bump it up by $5,000.

The Diabetes Scholars Foundation is managing the scholarship, which will be available for application starting Jan. 4, she said.

Big city, Broadway lights My 16th birthday was earlier this month, and it definitely was a day to remember. From cheering on the Vikings to victory at the homecoming football game to celebrating with my friends and family, I couldn’t have asked for a more amazing day.

However, the best part of the celebration took place over a week ago. My parents surprised me (thank you, frequent-flier miles) with the perfect gift – a trip to New York City to go see “The Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway! As you can imagine, I was beyond excited!

The trip was only a little more than 24 hours long, but I was able to see and do so much during the brief time I was there. My dad and I flew into LaGuardia early in the morning and soon headed to Central Park. When walking through the scenic landscape, I almost forgot I was in the midst of loud and chaotic Manhattan. From the picturesque bridges and gardens to landmarks like the Bethesda fountain and Swedish Cottage, I thoroughly enjoyed the hours spent walking around the park.

All that walking caused us to work up an appetite. Our solution? Little Italy Pizza near Times Square, home to more than 20 kinds of gourmet pizza.

We then headed to the Theatre District and took pictures in front of all the theaters that house my favorite productions, such as “Les Misérables” and “Wicked.” Each one was vastly different in both architecture and décor. This super fan was thrilled to be right in the heart of Broadway!

As the afternoon continued, my dad and I got to spend time together as we strolled the streets of Manhattan just taking everything in. From free samples of chocolate covered pomegranate seeds at the Hershey’s store to every “Frozen” product imaginable at the huge Disney Store in Times Square, we had more than enough to

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel keep us occupied! We stopped at the New York Public Library and marveled at the gorgeous building, and then relaxed in scenic Bryant Park. Finally, a small city diner provided a delicious dinner of Belgian waffles with strawberries.

At long last, we made our way to the Majestic Theatre, home of “Phantom.” I was practically bursting with excitement as we headed to our seats in the rear mezzanine. I had a bird’s eye view of the stage, and I can’t even begin to describe the eager anticipation that coursed through me as the lights dimmed and the show began.

Everything about the production was beyond what I could have imagined. I was blown away by the special effects, the incredible talent of the performers and the sheer beauty of the music. I was in tears during the final scene because I was so moved. As I left the show with a playbill and commemorative T-shirt in hand, I was on cloud nine.

After getting a grand total of four hours of sleep that night, my dad and I flew back to Chicago, just in time for me to start my school day around third period.

I was exhausted, but every minute of sleep deprivation was worth it! It’s not every day you get to wander the streets of NYC and take in “Phantom of the Opera,” sharing these special moments with your dad. It was an experience like no other and definitely the sweetest 16 ever!

Sanders gave Clinton an opportunity to soar

By FRANCIS WILKINSON Bloomberg View Bernie Sanders is passionate. He has lofty ideals. He has a vision of a better, more communitarian America where plutocrats are constrained and average people are elevated. And if Democrats want to make progress on achieving Sanders’s goals, they will nominate Hillary Clinton for president.

That was the message of the Democratic debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Clinton’s vision deficit wasn’t exposed by Sanders; it was outsourced to him. Suddenly, her programmatic assault on public policy – a five-point plan! – had a thematic framework. Time and again, Sanders announced a distant destination.

Time and again, Clinton laid down the roadway to

take the country there. All the way there? No. Maybe not halfway. But some of the way.

Clinton is not a visionary. But Sanders is not a president. None of the four men on the stage is, or will be. Clinton’s policy proposals repeatedly settled into a happy valley.

She refused to compete with Sanders on Social Security expansion or free college. She promised only to exceed President Barack Obama.

Sanders did more than anyone but Kevin McCarthy to diminish Clinton’s email problem, saying, “Let’s talk about the real issues facing America.” It won’t put the emails behind her, but it neutered the issue for everyone on the stage, including moderator Anderson Cooper.

Sanders was not an antagonist. For Clinton,

he was a tag-team partner.

His cranky authenticity contrasted with Clinton’s cool professionalism, but largely to her benefit.

Republicans may be sufficiently unhinged to entertain (and be entertained by) Donald Trump and Ben Carson. Few Democrat voters are ready to board such shaky vessels.

They may never love Clinton. But she showed them Tuesday night why they will probably vote for her.

“I have a lifetime of experience of getting results,” Clinton said. “I know what it takes.”

It’s a dull message for a vexing moment in history.

But Clinton believes it.

And Democrats almost certainly will buy it.

More than shopping Geneva specialty shops focus on experience to gain customer loyalty

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Walking into a chain grocery store can offer many things, including the opportunity to buy specialty items, such as olive oil, spices and garlic. But there is not usually much of an experience associated with such endeavors, and rarely do such stores sample an array of similar products at one time.

Geneva has a variety of specialty shops that focus on the customer experience.

There also is a unique feel as to how the products at these shops are made.

Take The Olive Mill owner Ed O’Connell, for example. During a trip to Napa Valley in California with his wife, the two saw efforts using olive trees and olive oil.

Twelve years later, The Olive Mill, located at 315 James St. in Geneva, is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary in November.

O’Connell knows there are several olive oil specialty shops around, but his was not only the first that opened in Illinois, he said, but he was “way ahead of the curve” when doing so. It’s all about the experience when walking into O’Connell’s shop.

“You can buy olive oils at the grocery store, but you know nothing about it,” O’Connell said. “Our oil stays completely fresh [in stainless steel fusti tanks] and, most importantly, you get to taste it. There are over 1,000 olive trees, and each has its own unique flavor. We have fresh oil every day, and all of the oil is extra virgin, which provides more flavor and more nutrition.”

The customer experience also is an important part of operations at the Galena Garlic Company, located at 318 W. State St. in Geneva.

Owner Lazlo Marton spends a good portion of his time in Geneva, though a Galena Garlic Company location also exists in Galena.

The store in Geneva opened five years ago, and Marton said the store prides itself on a couple of things that set it apart

from competitors.

“We pride ourselves on ultra premium fresh olive oils,” Marton said. “They are certified, which means you know the origin, the crush date and the chemistry.”

But Marton went on to explain that Galena Garlic’s most unique quality is its idea of easy gourmet seasonings. The seasonings are kept in pouches that keep them fresh anywhere from nine months to a year. The pouches keep air out, and the contents do not become oxidized upon opening them, as seasonings can do in jars.

These things set Galena Garlic apart, but – from day one – Marton and the entire staff have stressed the customer experience, as well. It doesn’t matter whether a customer is a novice cook or expert chef, Galena Garlic is for everyone.

“We want it to be a unique experience for everyone,” Marton said. “I always joke and say, ‘If you can burn water, you’ll be just fine.’ People may be scared and not want to invite people over, but our product is fool-proof. We want people to walk in and have an experience they remember. We are very hands-on, and it’s not just about shopping; you want to help and give ideas on how to use the products, as well.”

Marton, like O’Connell, said strong customer service with openness to feedback has been a key to success and remaining relevant in the community.

The Spice House, 577 S. 3rd St., Geneva, provides another unique experience.

Manager Janet McCauley said all of the spices at The Spice House are blended inhouse, the store’s most unique feature.

“It’s very, very unique,” McCauley said. “Just about no one does it around here. To have them hand-prepared with

the quality in which we offer it, it is a very rare thing. We pride ourselves on that, there’s no doubt.”

McCauley said you can smell the shop nearly two blocks away, adding one of the go-to options for many customers is the Back of the Yards Garlic Pepper Butcher’s Rub. The Spice House website calls it “possibly our best grilling mixture, and one of our top selling spice blends.”

It is named for a certain area between Halsted Street and Western Avenue in Chicago that is known for its history of hard-working immigrants who found work in the meat industry and became the

backbone of the city, the website states.

Marton shared one final thought that not only summed up the Galena Garlic Company’s staying in existence, but also what’s been important to the success of many specialty shops.

“I go to the merchant meeting, and did when I first got to town 10 years ago,” Marton said. “I would say somewhere between 5 and 10 percent of the stores that were running back then are still running today. We’ve sold the experience, and – although it’s shopping – when you’re in for a visit, it’s truly about the customer and relationships that are built.”

Duo finds chlorine kinship Sandecki welcomes German teammate, ‘sister’

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Linda Hoppe of Solingen, Germany began learning English seven years ago, when she was 10.

Sometimes, her native tongue still slips in with her acquired one, as it did at a St. Charles East girls swimming practice in August.

Hoppe, a junior foreign exchange student, uttered the now-iconic phrase “Das is good, ja,” and more than a few teammates’ ears perked upon hearing the German words for “this” and “yes.” Then came the giggling.

“It was the first thing that kind of broke the seal of Linda’s shyness,” fellow Saints junior Sarah Sandecki said.

Sandecki would know.

The Saints use some variation of “Das is good, ja,” when

Hoppe, Sandecki’s newest sibling of sorts, prepares to compete in the backstroke, her specialty event, or any others.

Hoppe is staying with the Sandecki family this school year, bringing the clan’s foreign exchange student experience full-circle. Sandecki’s father, Bart, a native of Poland, studied in New Jersey when he was 18 and quickly took a shine to the United States. He didn’t want to leave.

Bart Sandecki finished college in New Jersey and met his wife, Dawn, at a party through mutual friends.

“I know the whole story,” Hoppe said. “We got to this point.”

Sarah Sandecki can spout some recent Hoppe history, too. It was easy to embrace once she felt more comfortable with her new teammate and roommate.

Those are in no particular order, by the way.

One early hurdle was a shared skepticism between Sarah Sandecki and her younger brother, Salvatore, a sixth-grader at Wredling Middle School.

“Him and I, before this experience, we were kind of questioning whether (it would work),” Sarah Sandecki said.

“Because it’s just kind of been the two of us. And we were like, ‘I don’t know. Another sibling in the house?’ But, I don’t know. Him and I can’t imagine her not being here.”

The feeling is mutual for Hoppe, whose work ethic has impressed veteran East coach Joe Cabel.

Cabel also is fond of the novelty of having foreign exchange students in the pool.

He struggles to think of coaching many others since joining

the program in 1980.

“This is new for us, and I thought it’d be a good experience for our girls,” he said.

“And it’s proven to be a nice thing.”

Hoppe began swimming when she was 4 but took time off last school year to focus on her studies. She said scholastic sports in Germany are offered on a club basis, but not done in tandem with a school.

Her hometown, north of Cologne in western Germany, is world renowned for its cutlery, which seems fitting for a sport in which knifing through the water is the object.

With recent losses to Geneva and Batavia, as well as to South Elgin and Jacobs in the season’s first two weeks, the Saints sit at three wins with two games to go, needing five wins to become playoff eligible.

There is no beating around the bush in these final two games, starting with a visit from St. Charles North Friday night. They are must-win games for East, and the Saints are definitely aware of it.

“It’s do or die in these last two games,” said Guillaume, a senior linebacker. “We have to go all out and hold nothing back. Our season comes down to these two games, and it’s right in front of us.”

Guillaume is expected to play after tweaking a partially torn MCL against Geneva, an injury he originally suffered in Week 1. After resting Guillaume last week against Larkin, Saints coach Bryce Farquhar knows there is no holding back anything now and “if a guy can play, he’s going to be out there.”

Russell, a fellow linebacker, has been one of the vocal leaders as a senior and doesn’t want to see his career end in the regular season.

“Absolutely, there’s a little bit of added pressure needing to win these last two, but it’s North week,” Russell said with a smile. “Everyone’s amped up, we’re excited and our weeks of practice have gotten better and better. We’re ready to go, and we’re excit-

Getting over the hump: It’s

been said a few times throughout the year, but each season when the schedule comes out, it is proven further: East will not make the playoffs unless it beats at least one of the Tri-Cities schools.

Farquhar has yet to do so as Saints coach – he’s 0-5 in his second season – but when North visits Norris Stadium, all of that can change with one positive result.

“The biggest thing is the fact that we’re confident in ourselves,” Guillaume said.

“We’re more focused and we want to win more than we have in past years. Everything is clicking right now for us and our confidence is higher than it’s ever been heading into this game.”

Actions speak louder than words, but these words prove to be fact: In the last seven games

with Batavia, Geneva and the North Stars, the Saints are 0-7, having been outscored, 259-75.

For the past two seasons, the gallery hasn’t exactly been of the peanut variety, but there are constructive sounds emanating from more places.

Since 2014, the IHSA, which will contest its respective state tournaments in Bloomington-Normal (boys) and Decatur-Forsyth (girls) this weekend, has allowed head coaches and designated assistants to live up to his or her names.

“You don’t want to necessarily go up and try to help. Only if they really, really need it, because it upsets the flow. A lot of them like to be left alone.”

Although prep golf long has lent itself to player-to-player conversation on good walks spirited or spoiled, coaches occasionally could seem like intruders in that rhythm, the good friend afraid of being jilted when another pal is talking to the new kid in town.

Communication protocol varies by coach, some of whom channel the bugaboo of offering advice to a playing partner during a recreational round.

“A lot of these girls, you know, they get in the zone and they don’t want to be bothered,” Geneva girls coach Doug Ross said. “And you can tell. You don’t want to necessarily go up and try to help.

Only if they really, really need it, because it upsets the flow.

A lot of them like to be left alone.

“And that’s the individual part of sport there, you know.

It’s them playing the course.

They take themselves out of it, they get themselves in their own zone and they just play the hole, and that’s all there is to it.”

“At the beginning of the year ... I was a little stubborn, but I think I’ve found a balance of when to listen and when I know what to do,” Saints junior Rose Bundy said, “and that’s been helpful.”

Few coaches view such discretion as undermining authority.

Presiding over a nine-hole dual is one thing, but the 18hole rounds of the state series are quite another.

You can’t be everywhere on a course when six players are spread across multiple groups, to be sure.

“Part of it is they’re trying to get themselves out of jams, and that’s where we try to get more and more kids, is to be able to self-help on the course,” Ross said. “And a lot of them have, all year. I’ve been very blessed with this group. They’ve been very, very self-sufficient girls.”

Now that’s something worth talking about. Just not when anyone is on the green, thank you.

To that end, North junior Gianna Furrie calls Whalen “a good encourager” whose NCAA playing career at Northern Illinois lends credence to her instincts and advice.

“She can tell if you’re not playing good,” Furrie said.

“She doesn’t ask all these questions and everything, but she knows what to say to help us feel better and play better.”

Of course, program veterans don’t always speak for younger teammates.

Freshmen standouts Jack McDonald (Geneva boys) and Megan Furtney (North girls) both described a soothing reliance they receive from coaches, namely with wind factor, yardages and club selection on par-3 holes.

“And it’s fun having someone to talk to walking up the fairways and stuff,” McDonald said.

The feeling is mutual for Vikings boys coach Eric Hatczel and assistant Bryan Knapp.

“All year, we’re out there, we’re walking holes with them, we’re talking strategy,” Hatczel said. “The boys seem to absolutely love it. … It really just kind of helps you keep them calm on the course. You can talk about what shots you want to hit.”

Coaches must wait until the last player in a group putts out to rekindle conversation while approaching the next hole. Once there, the communication cannot delay teeing off.

A coach must be registered on a school’s list of participants to offer input.

Prompted for their thoughts on the rule, a handful of coaches referred to 2015 being the first year of the change.

In fact, it’s the second, but Hatczel’s perspective offers a possible window into the confusion.

Sarah Sandecki largely has served the Saints as a freestyle sprinter this season, but both she and Hoppe found themselves together during Saturday’s 100 backstroke at East’s annual College Events Invitational.

“It’s cool to have a school team where I can practice with and swim the meet,” Hoppe said. “And then the football games, to go there.

Homecoming was quite a good thing I experienced, because we don’t have homecoming in Germany. The assemblies, they are new to me. We don’t have assemblies in Germany.

And everything is a little bit different. But it’s cool. I’ve learned a lot.”

To borrow Hoppe’s famous, almost first stateside words, “Das is good, ja.”

Dear Dr. K : How often does my dentist need to take X-rays of my teeth?

I’d like to minimize my exposure to radiation.

Dear Reader : Virtually everyone who visits the dentist will have X-rays taken at some point.

They are valuable for uncovering problems in places the dentist can’t see with the naked eye.

X-ray images can reveal cavities inside and between the teeth.

They can show wisdom teeth that have failed to come through the gum, and bone deterioration below the gum line.

Some people worry getting dental X-rays can cause cancer or birth defects. Today’s dental X-ray machines emit very low levels of radiation.

They narrowly focus the X-ray beam so it passes through only your jaw and teeth. And they work fast. These advances all reduce the radiation exposure.

Increasingly, dentists are using digital dental X-rays. These devices store images in electronic files rather than on film.

The high-resolution pictures require as little as 10 percent of the amount of radiation needed to create a traditional X-ray image.

Still, as a precaution, your dentist should cover your body with a lead apron when taking X-rays. This prevents up to 94 percent of the radiation from reaching your chest, abdomen and reproductive organs.

That virtually eliminates the risk of birth defects, and your risk of cancer – except for your thyroid gland.

To shield your thyroid gland, which is located in the front of your neck, you also should wear a lead collar while the X-rays are being taken.

How often you need dental X-rays depends on the state of your den-

Young mother learns she can’t reform drug-abusing boyfriend Dr. Wallace: Some people who know me consider me a loser, but maybe this loser can help her fellow female teens.

I’m 20, but when I was 16, I was deeply in love with a certain guy who was very active in drugs. He took everything and anything he could get his hands on.

I “loved” this guy, and since I was straight I really thought I could change him. My parents were concerned and they warned me he couldn’t be changed, but I didn’t listen. I was in love, and love conquers all.

He really wanted us to be together, so I quit school and moved in with him. Two months ago, I moved out. I lived with him for three solid years and did everything possible to get him to lay off the drugs, but nothing worked.

All I got from the relationship was a lot of false hope, disappointment, grief, turmoil, trouble and two kids. I finally decided he was never going to stop taking drugs and my kids’ futures are more important than trying to convert him.

Many times I have read in your column girls love guys and think they can change the guys for the better. It sounds good, but in real life it just doesn’t work that way.

My parents are both overweight, so I don’t know if I’m doomed to be obese all of my life or if I can eventually look like a healthy, normal young lady.

Dear Abby: My son, a widower with two boys, ages 6 and 9, has just informed me his 33-year-old girlfriend, “Karen,” is pregnant and due in five months. Karen has never been married and has no children, so she will become a stepmom and a new mom in a short period of time. Neither my son nor Karen seems to realize how difficult it will be to bring a stepparent into this situation, especially with a new baby on the way. One of the boys will have to give up his bedroom when the baby arrives. I’m concerned the boys will be overwhelmed by this, when they have not yet been able to effectively deal with the death of their mother.

How to keep a stress-free vacation home

By definition, accessories are nonessentials – throw pillows and blankets, framed pictures, books and objects – but really, they’re what makes a room look lived in. Soft goods, such as pillows and blankets, add warmth while pictures and books add personal notes. And because they’re a room’s most affordable element, you can switch them in and out with the seasons.

• Throw pillows: In a practical sense, these are handy on sofas with a deep pitch; use them to prop up your back so you don’t sink in too deep.

• Framed photos: Pick your favorites, frame them simply and in a similar style (like all silver), and set out a small grouping instead of scattering them throughout the room.

• Flowers and plants: Every room needs a living natural element. A houseplant or fresh flowers from the grocery store will do.

• Group like objects together. Whether items are linked by color, shape, or material, groups of objects often have more presence than single objects spread throughout a room.

• Always display items in odd numbers. Trust me, one item or a grouping of three things looks better than a grouping of two or four.

• Pay attention to shape. If all of the furniture in your room is boxy, then opt for several objects with shapely curves.

• Show off your personality.

Accessories are what make a house a home. Items don’t have to be expensive, but they should have a connection to you, thereby making your room feel more grounded and real.

• Make it useful. Baskets and boxes, while considered accessories in a room, are storage necessities. Use them to corral papers, remote controls, jewelry and any other odds and ends.

• Think in triangles. If you’ve ever studied great painting or sculpture, then you know that many artists use a triangular composition to guide the viewer’s eye and make for a more dynamic composition. Do the same when you are styling. The best arrangement is a scalene triangle, in which all sides have different lengths. And at our weekend place, we use the expensive, organic cleaning supplies we’ve deemed too pricey for everyday use. Is this logical? Probably not. But little indulgences make even wiping down the counters feel different in the country than in the city.

to surface-clean and close up shop after a visit. And as much as I love puttering in a garden, there’s no bed to weed and no lawn to mow. To cut down on grocery runs, I keep supplies on hand for quick pantry meals.

(Pasta and a jar of good sauce are perfect if heavy traffic on Interstate 66 wipes out our plans for a leisurely dinner on the grill.) And it won’t make my Pinterest board, but we sometimes use paper plates and plastic cutlery to minimize dish duty.

Keep a list: I keep a note on my smartphone listing every item in the cabin’s pantry and fridge. It sounds a tad obses-

sive, but it wasn’t hard once I got going. That way, when I’m grocery shopping in the city for a weekend trip, I don’t have to wonder whether we’ve got, say, tarragon. Otherwise, we’d probably wind up with four bottles of random herbs but no olive oil.
