Dee said it is an exciting time for the campaign, noting that in two years, the group has been able to find other organizations, groups and individuals willing to be partners and embrace the message. But she said it is only the beginning, describing the atmosphere two years ago as “a closed zipper.”

“The zipper is open, but we’re barely opening the zipper,” Dee said. “There is a long way to go.”

The entire movement began with a group called Knights Against Bullying.

The groups are related, and Dee has said the best way to describe the dynamic is that the Kindness Campaign is a community collaboration, inspired by the Knights Against Bullying and sponsored by P.E.A.K. for Kids.

Dee said the Kindness Campaign’s message is to inspire good choices and “reminds kids that being nice not only makes others happy, it makes them happy, too. And the more times we choose to be nice, the happier the world will be – all because of that one person making that choice to be nice.”

Harvest drawdown at Maple Park church

School officials answer questions about referendum Information meeting on $15M ballot question held Tuesday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Residents peppered Batavia School District 101 officials with questions during Tuesday’s public information meeting on the district’s $15 million referendum question on the Nov. 4 ballot to fund capital improvements throughout the district.

“Our job is to make sure you have all the information,” Batavia Superintendent Lisa Hichens told the audience.

“We are not here to tell you to vote yes or no.”

If approved, the district would issue up to $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund the projects. Assistant Superintendent for Finance Kris Monn said the proposal would not result in a tax in-

crease because the district would pledge existing revenues against the bonds. The district would make annual payments out of its operations and maintenance budget.

Several residents asked if the district had a right to raise taxes as a last resort.

“I don’t know of any legal way this board could raise taxes to pay off these bonds,” Monn said.

Batavia school board members recently decided the district will ask for two synthetic turf fields at Batavia High School as part of the referendum.

During the meeting, school district officials also answered questions that were submitted in advance. Several questions were about the safety of artificial turf.

“There is nothing out there that shows turf is more dangerous than a natural surface,” Hichens said. “Obviously we take the safety of our students very seriously.”

Batavia High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal for Operations Dave Andrews said there is no evidence that artificial turf causes more injuries than natural grass.

The project would install a synthetic turf field at Bulldog Stadium and add a second multi-use synthetic turf field.

The majority of the school board members agreed with a staff recommendation that the project would bring the most students back onto the high school campus for after-school outdoor activities.

The project carries an esti-

mated $7.6 million price tag, including $4.7 million for the multi-use synthetic field. The $4.7 million price tag includes a $2.9 million underground stormwater detention system and $490,000 in sports field lighting.

Improvements to the softball fields and JV baseball field also are part of the project, as well as $573,000 for replacing the seven-lane track and a new stone base and as-

phalt surface.

The referendum also seeks voter approval for capital projects throughout the district.

High priority projects include an estimated $850,000 in upgraded lighting systems at Rotolo Middle School, $550,000 in updated lighting systems at Batavia High School and $250,000 in masonry tuckpointing at H.C. Storm Elementary School.

Police say man carrying beer approached St. Charles teen

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 13-yearold boy walking to school at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday was approached by a man carrying a beer, St. Charles police said. The man motioned for the teen to come over to him and then followed the teen.

When the teen ignored him, the man went on his way, police said.

The teen said he did not recognize the man and had not seen him before, police said.

The incident occurred as the middle school student walked south from West Main Street in the parking lot of Valley Shopping Center, 1500 W. Main St., police said.

The teen said the man was

on foot and behind a sports bar, Rookies, holding a tall can of Bud Light beer. The man called out, “hey,” to the teen, police said. When the teen looked at him, the man motioned for the boy to come over.

When he called out “hey” it sounded more like “ay,” police said the teen told them.

The teen said he ignored the man and kept walking toward the businesses in the back half of the shopping center, but then noticed the man started to walk toward him, so the teen walked faster.

The teen told police he was about halfway through the parking lot he when he looked at the man who was still following him.

The teen said at this point, he called a friend on his cellphone. The teen told police

the man must have seen him make a call, because after he hung up, the man turned and walked toward O’Reilly Auto Parts, 1405 W. Main St., police said.

The teen was not harmed and told school officials about the incident once he got to school, Detective Chuck Pierce said.

The man was described by the teen as Hispanic, about 30 years old, 5 feet, 4 inches tall with a mustache and glasses.

He said the man wore a blue sweater and black jeans and spoke to him with a Spanish accent, police said.

Pierce said school officials called police at about 10:30 a.m. to report the incident. Pierce said anyone who knows anything about the man or the incident should call Pierce at 630-443-3827.

KRAMER, MAYES FACE OFF Sheriff candidates spar over issues past and present Know more

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The race for Kane County sheriff between Republican Don Kramer and Democrat Willie Mayes is not only a contest between two experienced, educated lawmen, but also carries an undercurrent of past issues between Kramer and current Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez, a Democrat, extending to Perez’s endorsement of Mayes over Kramer for the Nov. 4 general election.

Perez beat Kramer for the sheriff’s post in 2010. Perez is not seeking a third term.

Kramer said Mayes is a lieutenant because Perez wanted to position him to run for sheriff, not because Mayes earned it.

“It was a political promotion,” Kramer said.

In a candidate forum, Mayes had said his promotion in May 2014 was the result of his hard work as a sergeant since 2003.

“Sheriff Perez was consistent in promoting from within,” Mayes said. “The sheriff has promoted from within in other divisions. And so, Mr. Kramer can make an accusation, but he is out of touch.”

Perez said Kramer is wrong.

“For Don to say that, this is a man who lives in glass houses throwing stones,” Perez said. “I promoted [Mayes] because he was deserving of promotion. He took over the planning and training division ... a vital part of our organization.”

Kramer had said at a forum that Perez endorsed Mayes because the sheriff did not want his former opponent to be in that office.

But Kramer said he would never take retribution against Mayes. Kramer explained his comment by saying Perez took retribution against him when he first began talking about running for sheriff in 2009, a year before the February 2010 primary.

“I was phrasing how Perez said, ‘Nobody in my office is going to run against me,’ ” Kramer said.

Kramer said Perez retaliated, transferring him without explanation to do foreclosure evictions, orders of protection and civil warrants for child support.

“I took retirement to get away from Pat Perez,” Kramer said.

Perez said Kramer was transferred because he badmouthed Perez while attending Kane County TRIAD

events – a program to help reduce crime against the elderly.

“He was disparaging me and my agency,” Perez said.

“In Don’s mind, he did nothing wrong other than run for sheriff. He had that right. He did not have the right to wear the uniform and disparage me to other employees.”

Kramer said Perez’s assertion was untrue.

“I never made any remarks against the sheriff or anybody else in the organization,” Kramer said. “It was totally made up.”

••• Kramer, 56, of Geneva, retired after nearly 30 years at the sheriff’s office.

Mayes, 52, of Aurora, has 28 years of experience, 22 at the sheriff’s office.

Both have fathers who served in law enforcement.

Kramer’s father, George Kramer, was the Kane County sheriff from 1978 to 1986 and hired Don Kramer in

1979, starting his son’s career. George Kramer retired five years ago.

Mayes’ father was the first African-American police officer in Aurora.

But each openly challenged the other’s management and leadership abilities.

Mayes has been a certified bomb technician, arson investigator and crime scene technician since 1999. He has been a hazardous material instructor and technician since 2003.

“I have practical, handson experience,” Mayes said.

“I am the most qualified because of my experience, my education and commitment to the community,” Kramer said. “As a lieutenant, I oversaw training, a $1 million computer upgrade. And I oversaw the new sheriff’s office. My opponent has had essentially one position – evidence technician ... someone who has never really super-

vised anybody.”

Perez said Mayes oversaw the evidence division and crime scene technicians.

“It is a big deal,” Perez said. “If a crime scene is processed incorrectly, it can have an undesired effect on the prosecution of a case.”

Mayes said Kramer touts his education but lacks hands-on experience.

“He has not done the work and not earned what he has,” Mayes said. “It has been given to him. He thinks he’s entitled. He was hired by his father and ... he was promoted to sergeant the day before his father left office.”

Kramer said that was not correct.

He said his promotion to sergeant was in June 1986, and his father left office Nov. 30, 1986.

“I’m a team builder. I believe in servant leadership,” Kramer said. “I believe a good team can solve problems better than one person, and that is going to be my style.”

“My leadership style is leadership by example,” Mayes said. “I am a forward thinker. I have a 100-day plan that you can hold me accountable.”

The sheriff candidates will appear at another forum hosted by the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County at 6:30 p.m. today at Kane County Branch Court, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

Plea agreement sought

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An attorney representing a petting zoo owner accused of misdemeanor cruelty and neglect asked whether the Kane County state’s attorney could make an offer of a plea agreement instead of going to trial.

Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin was charged in March after the discovery of several dead and 94 sick and starving animals belonging to her Mini Zoo Crew.

The animals were removed from the Hampshire farm where they were being kept.

Fiebelkorn’s attorney, Jamie Wombacher, said she asked prosecutors for a proposal for an agreement that she could offer her client and then possibly settle the case.

The next court date is Dec. 1.

On another matter, Wombacher won a partial victory, allowing her to have access to some records she subpoenaed.

Kane County Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Flood said about 25 pages related to former interim animal control Robert

Sauceda – hand-written notes and emails – could be copied and released to Wombacher.

Flood ruled that records Wombacher sought from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office are exempt as attorney-client privilege. Sauceda handled the removal of Fiebelkorn’s animals. Sauceda first was suspended, then resigned in May amid a personnel investigation. Wombacher sought details of an internal investigation on Sauceda as it related to his credibility, bias and ability to conduct an investigation, according to court papers.

In her court filing, Wombacher noted Sauceda’s involvement in an alleged theft and cover-up of a horse that was reported to have died, but was actually recovering.

In Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Gaeke’s response, nonprivileged materials relating to the horse investigation could be provided, but not anything unrelated in Sauceda’s personnel file.

Fiebelkorn did not appear in court because her child is sick, Wombacher said.

Student life today can be a challenge. Many students, whether traditional or those returning to college seeking new skills, face the same struggles. There is the financial struggle to meet tuition, the stress of outside distractions, and workplace demands for ever-changing competencies, among others.

Then there are the challenges faced once inside a classroom — not only mastering specific course content, but also mastering the art of learning itself.

This is where I step in. I am the tutoring and learning strategies supervisor at Waubonsee Community

College. The tutors, academic coaches and I work together to provide assistance to our students in academic subject areas, as well as guiding them in general learning strategies.

In working with our students, many concerns are voiced. The problems range from not having enough time, not being able to read for retention and understanding, not knowing how to write a paper or do documentation, to having extreme text anxiety. Many students simply just don’t know how to begin. All students know how to read, but they may not understand the process of reading academically. Then there is the technology-related challenge of having to use Internet programs with access codes, and the general anxiety of being in a new

GENEVA – A Kane County Board member with a reported attendance rate of 27 percent said at Tuesday’s board meeting he was uncomfortable such information was attached to a proposed ordinance establishing salaries for elected county officials.

The County Board acts on the ordinance when offices are up for election, officials said.

The ordinance approved Tuesday kept the salaries frozen for board members ($25,000), the sheriff ($124,750), the clerk

($100,000), and the treasurer ($100,000).

A spreadsheet detailing each official’s salary and benefits, including medical and dental, also contained a column with the board members’ meeting attendance rate from January to September.

Some were as high as 98 percent.

St. Charles man unharmed in Indiana bus rollover crash Firefighters respond to the scene of a double-decker Megabus crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 65 near Greenwood, Indiana. St. Charles resident Craig Steichen was a passenger on the bus and was not hurt, but at least 18 people were taken to area hospitals, according to Indiana State Police.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A St. Charles resident and co-founder of Operation Warrior Wishes said he was not injured Tuesday morning after a Megabus double-decker rollover crash in Indiana.

“I’m very lucky,” Craig Steichen said during a Tuesday afternoon phone interview.

Steichen was one of about 53 passengers on the bus, which he said was en route to Chicago from Atlanta. The bus, at about 4:31 a.m. Tuesday, was traveling north on Interstate 65 near Greenwood, Indiana, south of Indianapolis, when it struck the rear of a 2003 Saturn passenger car, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

The bus went into the median, struck cable barriers and overturned, the release states.

Steichen was laying down, sleeping across two seats at the front of the bus on the upper level, when the crash occurred. He said he heard a “boom,” then fell from the seats and started rolling.

Steichen said he got a couple of rug burns but otherwise was fine. He and 34 other uninjured passengers were taken to a hospital for observation. There were 18 additional passengers who went to three other hospitals with various complaints of pain and contusions. The most serious injury was a possible broken arm, according to the release.

Before the Saturn was struck, its driver, a 22-yearold man from Columbus, Indiana, went off the roadway because of driver inattention and went into the median, striking the cable barriers, according to the release. The car came back onto northbound I-65 at rest, facing east, with the rear of the car in the right lane.

Once the bus struck the Saturn, it was sent into a ditch east of I-65, according to the release.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no citations had been issued in the crash, said Sgt. Rich Myers, an Indiana State Police public information officer.

“This is very early in the investigation,” Myers said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The woman who filed an ethics complaint against Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen and a county contract employee criticized how such complaints are handled during Tuesday’s County Board meeting.

Batavia Township resident Ellen Nottke filed the complaint regarding alleged misuse of the Kane County Connects newsletter on Aug. 14.

“To date, I have heard nothing of substance, only

that it is still under investigation,” Nottke said, reading from a prepared statement.

The complaint was referred to the state’s attorney’s office after ethics adviser Grant Wegner recused himself from reviewing the complaint. Wegner cited an appearance of impropriety.

Nottke said the county’s ethics ordinance was a “noble” attempt to bring transparency and ethical behavior to elected officials, but those responsible for the ordinance appear to believe it is unenforceable.

“When the ethics officer is

appointed by the board chairman, we begin with the public perception that no enforcement will ever take place,” she said.

“When the ethics officer recuses him/herself from ruling on an alleged violation then forwards the complaint to the state’s attorney, again we are faced with the perception that nothing will happen.”

In a brief response to Nottke’s comments, Lauzen said State’s Attorney Joe McMahon is following through with his responsibility.

Lauzen also noted Nottke has served as a paid political

consultant – a point several board members objected to and brought Nottke back to the podium.

She said she wasn’t pointing fingers at Lauzen.

“I’m pointing fingers at a system that’s flawed,” she said, earning the applause of some board members.

In addition to asking for a public report on all ethics complaints, Nottke said the public should know on a regular basis about the status of an investigation.

“It benefits no one when an investigation drags on indefinitely with no resolution,”

she said.

Wegner last submitted an ethics report at the Human Services Committee meeting in August, something he must do at least twice a fiscal year per the ethics ordinance.

The time frame for the report was March 2013 to July 2014, during which time four inquiries were submitted.

A complaint filed March 14, 2014, regarding the use of county computers for campaign purposes, was referred to the state’s attorney after Wegner determined it appeared there was a violation, according to his report.

SUGAR GROVE – The public is invited this weekend to see the newly renovated Sugar Grove Township Community Building at 141 Main St. in Sugar Grove.

An open house will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the building, and refreshments will be served, according to a news release. The facility reopened at the end of August after being closed for part of the summer because of renovations.

“Hopefully, a lot of people can stop by and see it ... and can use it in the future,” Chris Walker, the building’s manager, said in a phone interview.

The building dates back to 1929, so the township wanted to maintain its history but also modernize it, Walker said. One of the biggest upgrades was in the building’s parlor, where new carpeting, furniture, window treatments and a flat-screen TV were installed.

The gym’s hardwood floor was resurfaced, and the bleachers were repainted, the release states. The heavy window blinds were removed, and the gym windows were tinted, Walker said.

There also is a new floor in the Scout room, downstairs hallway and the building’s kitchen. The kitchen is an example of one of the upgrades that was a necessity – during the harsh winter weather at the start of the year, the tiles became lopsided, and the

Apocalypse. According to reports, Wheeler has been hit with a terribly destructive virus. Your main objective? Survival. Dodge zombies through a disorienting obstacle course complete with safe zones, complications, emergency supplies and special effects. Use quick decision-making skills, speed and bravery to escape all the zombies and reach the vaccination point. But make one mistake, and you could be zombie dinner.

This year, the Zombie Apocalypse will be split into two parts. Before the sun sets from 5 to 6 p.m., the park district will provide a less intense, family-friendly course recommended for those ages 10 and under. As the sun goes down and an eerie fog rolls in, the course will be ready for those seeking more of a challenge. From 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., the ultimate Zombie Apocalypse is recommended for those ages 11 and older.

On Oct. 25, the Geneva Park District is celebrating Halloween with three events certain to bewitch the entire family. Our annual Halloween Hayday, Peck Farm Park’s Howl ’o Ween Dog Parade and the thrilling Zombie Apocalypse offer plenty of opportunities for kids, teens, adults and even dogs to get out and play in Geneva.

The fun begins with Halloween Hayday at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva. This year, the family-friendly event will be held at a new time, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The festivities include a children’s carnival, hay rides, bounce houses and more. New additions to the event line-up include pumpkin bowling, scarecrow-making and a selfie station for families to capture memories from this year’s event and take home a photo frame craft. Children should come dressed to impress for a costume contest.

Plus, Chick-fil-A will provide chicken nuggets for kids to create a spooky snack.

6th Congressional District: Roskam Incumbent U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, is facing a challenge from Democrat Michael Mason to represent Illinois’ 6th Congressional District.

Roskam’s top priority is the economy and turning it around by getting the government out of the way. A member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Roskam wants to eliminate outdated regulations and replace them with more effective ones. This includes examining the tax code. He vows to continue to work on solutions to make the tax code simpler and fairer for families and businesses.

Mason, a former Postal Service executive from Naperville who retired as the manager of the Great Lakes Area Distribution Networks office, wants to reduce the country’s debt by boosting the economy through well-paying jobs. He supports increasing the minimum wage and vows to work in bipartisan fashion. He also supports efforts to reform the tax code.

Roskam too has shown the ability to reach across the aisle and work with Democrats, including efforts with members of the House and Senate from both parties to root out Medicare fraud.

We endorse Roskam.

House District 50: Wheeler Republican candidate Keith Wheeler will face Democratic candidate Valerie Burd in the race to become the next state representative in the 50th District, an area currently served by Kay Hatcher.

Both candidates are qualified for the position.

Burd has years of experience in local government, having served as an alderman and the mayor of Yorkville.

She is in favor of a progressive income tax, and she is in favor of raising the minimum wage. She touts herself as a moderate who is willing to work with those from either side of the political aisle to solve problems.

Wheeler, an Oswego resident, is the owner of a small business – Responsive Network Services, an information technology consulting firm. He previously was the chairman of the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Wheeler drives home the message of job creation. In fact, the theme of his campaign is “Illinois Jobs for Illinois Families.” He said it’s expensive to start a business in the state, and he aims to help make Illinois a more affordable place for business owners by lowering taxes, reducing regulations and working on workers’ compensation reform.

Wheeler also seeks pension reform, supporting a move to a defined contribution system, so that retirees no longer would depend on politicians to manage their retirement.

We view Wheeler as the superior candidate. He is endorsed.

11th Congressional District: Foster Incumbent 11th District Congressman Bill Foster, D-Naperville, faces a Nov. 4 re-election challenge from state Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville.

Foster regularly describes himself as “a businessman and a scientist,” and his connection to the area is strong given his background as a physicist and particle accelerator designer at Fermilab. He said his wiring as a scientist gives him an uncommon and valuable skill set in Washington, D.C., plus an advanced understanding of an ever-increasing range of issues involving technology and the

atmosphere.

Foster believes more longterm investment is needed in research and development for the United States to excel in the competitive, global economy. He is part of a self-proclaimed “New Democrat Coalition” of moderate Democrats, though he supports party views on topics such as universal background checks for gun buyers, comprehensive immigration reform and addressing global warming.

He did, however, vote against President Obama’s cap-andtrade proposal.

Senger thinks the U.S.

economy is stifled by too much government regulation, advocates reducing government spending and cites her work in Springfield on Illinois’ pension crisis as evidence she can help address problems in bipartisan fashion. She said elected officials need “to do the work” to gain credibility in Congress, and pledges to be more aggressive about introducing legislation than Foster.

While Senger is a solid candidate, we endorse Foster.

His thoughtful, pragmatic approach and big-picture focus make him an asset in Washington.

Block helps St. Charles North to win, move into tie atop division

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The frontrow blocking set the tone, and St. Charles North girls volleyball’s smaller backline sprawled out for just about everything else.

Multiple lines of defense meshed for North on Tuesday as the North Stars picked up a 25-14, 25-22 win against host St. Charles East, creating a threeway tie for the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title among the two St. Charles schools and Geneva.

“We are getting to balls that sometimes, honestly, we have no business getting to, but they have a belief in themselves that they can dig any ball, and there’s no ball that’s going to hit our floor, and that’s what defense is, it’s an attitude,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said.

“They have really just kind of acquired that attitude about them which has really just helped our overall game because when we’re digging balls and we’re digging them right to target, we’re able to run our middles, and that’s making for a more complex offense, which we like to run, and it’s freeing up our pin hitters, too.”

Jaclyn Taylor (10 digs, five assists) and Taryn Dal Degan (six digs, four assists) thwarted many of the East attempts that front-row stalwarts Emily Carroll (five blocks) and Daley Krage (three blocks) didn’t send back initially, and libero Megan Russell and defensive specialists Sam Lappin and Frankie Neari also drew high praise.

“It was just incredible,” Carroll said. “We were just where we were supposed to be, and Daley Krage really showed up today. She was just blocking like crazy, and I think that really helped our offense and our defense.”

North (20-8, 6-1 UEC River) zoomed to an 8-2 lead in Game 1, forcing a quick Saints’ timeout, and the North Stars were never seriously threatened in the game.

The North Stars appeared to be in similar command in the second game, leading 19-12,

The 6-foot-3 Krage (Northwestern) then soared high to secure a favorable angle for a wellplaced, finesse kill that stemmed East’s momentum, and fellow Division I recruit Claire Anderson (DePaul) ended the match shortly thereafter with her team-high sixth kill.

Krage (five kills) said North felt well prepared for the Saints in the crosstown matchup that

raised money for the Susan G. Komen foundation that helps lead the fight against breast cancer.

“We knew we had to play really good defense and keep the ball alive because they’re a really low-error team,” Krage said of the Saints. “We had to focus on pushing rallies.”

East (22-7) was led by Megan Schildmeyer (six kills, nine assists) and Anne Hughes (12 digs).

Saints coach Jennie Kull said the match was “probably the

worst we’ve ever passed.”

“I’ll be honest, I’m disappointed that they didn’t play well, but I can guarantee we can learn from this and that it’s not going to happen again,” Kull said.

Earlier in the season, Geneva beat North and East beat Geneva. The Vikings defeated Batavia on Tuesday, ensuring that Geneva, East and North would finish tri-conference champions, with one UEC River loss apiece.

“It’s great to be in this kind of atmosphere, where the volleyball here is just so good,” Hawkins said. “I go other places, and it’s not the same, so I’m glad to be in this conference. It makes for a tough fight every year.”

The Blackhawks look for their third straight win to start the season against a 1-2 Flames team.

Did you guys pay attention to the postseason seeding, being a lot further down than East and Geneva? Did that aggravate you guys at all?

Yeah, it was kind of our fuel for this game because we thought that we should have been higher than that, so we wanted to [play well] tonight.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

Probably Taryn (Dal Degan) because she’s probably one of the smartest and she would help me a lot. A lot of other people wouldn’t want to help me, but Taryn would.

BATAVIA – A nonverbal cue between sets Tuesday halted the Geneva girls volleyball team’s energy lapse, spurring the Vikings’ sweep of Batavia.

“We just go in the circle and look at each other,” Vikings sophomore outside hitter Grace Loberg said, “and we know we have to step it up.”

With St. Charles North’s simultaneous victory at St. Charles East lending a helping hand, Geneva vaulted into a three-way tie for first place in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division with the St. Charles schools.

The Vikings exhaled from Batavia’s initial push, closing out a 26-24, 25-12 victory as a faithful student section chanted “NEXT COMES FOOTBALL!” Geneva visits Batavia in that sport Friday, with the winner taking the inside track to the UEC River title.

Several Vikings football players watched their volleyball counterparts improve to 22-6 and 6-1 in conference play. By the looks of it, the group sensed the confidence on the court when Geneva surged with a 12-6 run to take a 24-18 lead in the opening set.

That’s when the Bulldogs (9-18, 4-3 UEC River) responded, capitalizing on a combi-

nation of Vikings errors and strong blocking from Anna Clausen and Alyssa Klemm.

A sudden, 24-all tie turned on a Batavia service error.

Then Loberg smacked one of her match-high 13 kills, providing relief and a chance to talk things over in the huddle.

“We didn’t play very well in the past tournament, the Mizuno Cup tournament this weekend, and we really didn’t want to have a repeat of that, where we played really bad,” said Geneva sophomore outside hitter/right side Ally Barrett, who added six kills. “We just wanted to come out and play strong and show people that we are a good team.”

A 7-0 run to open Tuesday’s second set propelled Geneva, with Loberg collecting three straight kills in one sequence as Mikayla Lanasa (16 assists) and Megan Cameron (12) found her in a fruitful, front-row rotation. Clausen snapped the run with one of her team-high five kills, but Vikings middle Alexandria Mullen and Loberg earned the next two kills to put the romp back on track.

“They’ve got a lot of bigtime hitters there, and they were able to terminate,” Batavia coach Lori Trippi-Payne said. “We were able to stop them for a while, and then, you know, when we would adjust our block one way, they would go the other way,

and unfortunately, some of those balls were coming so hard, they weren’t even digging them.”

Vikings coach Annie Seitelman beamed about many things after the match, including a conversation with friend Nancy Mueller, an assistant at her alma mater, Indiana, who was in the area on a recruiting sweep.

Still, on-court matters inspired Seitelman more. Geneva played with a faster tempo, as desired, while showing improved ball control. Then there was the involvement of the middles. Fueled by sprawling defense from Kelsey Wicinski (11 digs) and Barrett (six), senior middle Maddie Courter added five kills for Geneva, collecting one more than Mullen.

“That was beautiful, wasn’t it?” Seitelman said.

Sam Bradle paced Batavia with nine assists, while Maddie Jaudon added eight digs against the Vikings.

“I’m proud of my girls. We pushed them to the limit,” Trippi-Payne said. “That’s what we were hoping for, right?”

A victory always is preferable, especially in this rivalry series, but Geneva rediscovered the trump card after catching its breath.

“We just had to be confident in ourselves and our abilities,” Barrett said, “and just go out there and stay calm and not get nervous.”

Batavia-Geneva matchup a sight for sore eyes The wait until Friday is almost over, mercifully so.

That’s when Batavia and Geneva football will duke it out for the Upstate Eight Conference River championship. St. Charles East and St. Charles North will square off the same night, making it a banner night for Tri-Cities football fans, albeit an overdue one.

Football season is always a blast, but the 2014 season – at least when it comes to the UEC River – has featured too many blowouts for the liking of anyone other than the parents of second- and third-stringers, who are seeing plenty of snaps with so many lopsided games.

The Week 1 nonconference game between Batavia and Oswego was an all-time classic. Good thing, since it turns out it’s had to tide us over for

most of the season when it comes to watching competitive football.

Once conference play hit, it’s been mismatches galore up and down the UEC River, with the exception of a Week 5 game between Batavia and St. Charles North that was competitive, albeit ending with a 21-7 margin in the Bulldogs’ favor.

That was the closest we’ve come to an upset in a conference game involving Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East or St. Charles North.

The other games have all gone to script in numbing fashion.

The gap between the conference’s upper crust (Batavia and Geneva) and the rest of the pack is painfully apparent.

North is next in the hierarchy and looks like a lock to make the playoffs. East has

Games involving Elgin, Larkin, Streamwood and conference newcomer West Chicago against any of the four Tri-Cities teams have proven noncompetitive. That makes for a lot of sleepy football beyond the first quarter.

Good things come to those who wait, but let’s get greedy and hope for great Friday when the Bulldogs welcome the Vikings to Bulldog Stadium.

This would be a Week 8 matchup of two unbeaten

archrivals were it not for the bizarre ending to the Oswego-Batavia opener.

But the Bulldogs swiftly dusted themselves off the next week against Glenbard North, the same night Geneva took down 2013 Class 6A state runner-up Richards.

Since then, it’s been evident this year’s Batavia-Geneva matchup shaped up as one of the best in the rivals’ storied history.

“Just the opportunity is fantastic,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said Tuesday. “ ...

It’s just going to be a lifetime of memories for these guys, good, bad or indifferent, you know. I’m excited for them to play.”

There are two teams capable of doing postseason damage, both apparently headed toward the Class 7A draw. Neither team has a glar-

ing weakness, with Geneva’s defense much more formidable this season, giving the Vikings reason to believe they could snap their three-game losing streak in the series.

But the Bulldogs match up with the Vikings along both lines of scrimmage, can mirror Geneva’s offensive balance and have no intention of disappointing what will be an amped-up home crowd.

No matter which team wins, it’s a safe bet we’ll have some bona fide drama on our hands Friday in Batavia.

Given the way the rest of the conference season has played out, that alone is cause for celebration.

Nore added that when going up against the Knights, there’s much more to worry about than Dunn, a Ball State commit.

“If Ellie’s struggling because we’re taking her out of system, they’ve got other players that are going to [beat

you],” Nore said. “I wish I knew all their names but I don’t. They’ve got right side, they can run middle.”

The Knights came into the contest in second place in conference behind Yorkville, which entered Tuesday unbeaten. Tuesday’s victory gave Kaneland a season sweep over Sycamore.

“Any time you start your second round of conference, it’s always tough. They’ve seen you once, you’ve seen them,” Violett said. “So it’s tough to come out and play and win in two again, so you have to change things up.

We changed a few things up and the girls stayed mentally strong.”

GRAYSLAKE – For the second straight season, St. Francis boys golf will be competing in the team portion of the IHSA Class 2A state tournament.

The Spartans shot a team score of 317 Monday at Stonewall Orchard, but were forced to wait for the final results after play was suspended because of rain. The score held up Tuesday, and St. Francis won the Grayslake Central Sectional title and advanced to the state meet, which begins Friday at Weibring in Normal.

“It feels good. I thought all season that we had a good opportunity to get back down there,” St. Francis coach Greg Baresel said. “We have a good group of kids, and it was our goal at the beginning of the season to get back down there and place.”

The sectional win was the Spartans’ first since 1994. Sean Doherty led the team with a 77, and freshman Luke Armburst added a 78.

St. Francis finished eighth in 2A last season. Burlington Central, which placed fourth,

will not be making a return trip to state, after it lost out on the last team spot by one stroke. The Rockets ended up with 328, one behind thirdplace Vernon Hills, amid some controversy.

After a Vernon Hills golfer made an eagle, players in his group not only questioned if he actually made the shot (they did not see it) but whether he took his scorecard off the course, then went back on.

Burlington Central coach Deb Twenhafel disputed the ruling, but in the end there wasn’t enough evidence to support any of the claims.

“It’s a technical ruling, and I’ll live with that,” said Twenhafel, who is retiring from 35 years of teaching and coaching at season’s end. “I feel I had to do this for my boys.”

Central did qualify two individuals for state, however.

Austin Niesel shot a 79 and Joe Sherman was one of two individuals to survive an eightman playoff for the final two spots.

Sherman parred the second playoff hole to advance after firing an 81 in regulation.

Norwegian transfer Carl Thorbjornsen provided one of the more entertaining storylines of the season Thursday, scoring three goals in a 6-3 Kaneland win over Morris only his second match of the season.

Thorbjornsen had to sit 30 days after moving in to the district in September to gain eligibility, but quickly proved himself as he seeks to fit into the Knights’ attack on the fly in the waning stages of the regular season.

COMING ATTRACTION The postseason is less than a week away, and the area boasts several legitimate contenders to make deep runs toward the Class 2A and 3A state finals Nov. 7 abd 8 in Hoffman Estates.

Safety of e-cigarettes has yet to be established Dear Doctor K: I caught my son and his friends smoking e-cigarettes. My son tells me I have no reason to worry, and that they’re safer than regular cigarettes.

What exactly are e-cigarettes? Are they safe?

Dear Reader: E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that look like cigarettes. They are built around a heating element, a cartridge that contains nicotine and other chemicals, and an atomizer that converts the chemicals into a vapor. Instead of inhaling smoke from e-cigarettes, the user inhales this vapor. (This is sometimes called “vaping.”)

Both regular and e-cigarettes contain nicotine – the substance that smokers become addicted to. E-cigarette smokers inhale nicotine, water and propylene glycol (a fluid that helps nicotine dissolve). But, unlike smokers of regular cigarettes, they don’t inhale tar, carbon monoxide or the thousands of other substances in tobacco smoke that can cause cancer.

It’s for this reason that e-cigarettes have been marketed as safe, or safer than cigarettes. It’s true that e-cigarettes can provide a nicotine fix without exposing smokers to cancer-causing tobacco, and they provide something to hold and inhale. This might help

However, I’m not aware of any strong evidence that e-cigarettes actually help people stop smoking.

Your son is not unusual: E-cigarette use has jumped in middle and high school students. This is probably, at least in part, because of e-cigarette advertising aimed at teens. Cartridges even come in flavors designed to appeal to kids, like bubble gum and chocolate.

E-cigarette companies would like teens – and their parents – to think of e-cigarettes as safe.

But it’s not true. Nicotine is a stimulant. E-cigarettes are not regulated, so different e-cigarettes may contain different amounts of nicotine. High levels of nicotine can cause dangerous disturbances in heart rhythm. Granted, there is no strong evidence that e-cigarettes can cause dangerous heart rhythms – but that is because there are no large, high-quality studies of the safety of e-cigarettes.

Also, using e-cigarettes can lead to a nicotine addiction. It’s entirely possible that e-cigarettes could be a “gateway” to smoking

regular cigarettes, particularly in kids.

There are also still many things we don’t know about e-cigarettes. For example, we don’t yet know whether there are possible adverse long-term effects of inhaling the vapor. As I mentioned in an earlier column, the vapor includes an array of chemicals, including diethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance; formaldehyde, a powerful carcinogen; and at least four other chemicals suspected of being harmful to humans.

The truth is that we’re in the early stages of learning about the possible benefits and risks of e-cigarettes. So, I would discourage my child from using them.

And when smokers ask me if e-cigarettes could help them to stop smoking, I tell them we just don’t know. And I remind them that there are many well-studied, FDA-approved nicotine replacement products on the market, including patches, gums, lozenges, inhalers and nasal sprays. They are vastly preferable to smoking.

And, until we have more studies, to electronic cigarettes.

Recycling paper is an excellent ecological project because 25 percent less energy is used to make recycled paper than to make new paper.

It also reduces air pollution by 95 percent.

Sara Paretsky, an author of detective fiction, said, “Sometimes I think I’m a one-trick pony because I’m not very inventive about new ways of telling stories.”

This week, trick one has been a one-trick spade pony with the king-four in the dummy opposite declarer’s queen-eight-three. But there can be more than one trick in this pony.

Today, South is once more in three no-trump and West again leads the spade six. But there is a difference – in this deal, West opened two spades to show a respectable six-card suit and some 6-10 high-card points. How does that affect declarer’s line of play?

North might have overcalled two spades with two no-trump, but with an inflexible spade stopper and four hearts, a takeout double was preferable. Then South went for what looked like the most likely game, despite his uncertain spade stopper. (Note that five diamonds looks reasonable on the NorthSouth hands, but the bad trump break would kill that contract.)

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade (given the lead), four hearts and three clubs. Three more winners can come from diamonds, but since East probably has that ace (not many players open a weak two with a pair of aces), there is a risk that the defenders will take five spade tricks first.

In the last two days, declarer had to play dummy’s king at trick one. Now, though, the only way to make this contract is to play low from the dummy and low from hand, letting East take the trick with his 10. That anesthetizes the spade suit and the contract comes home with an overtrick.
