Batavia aldermen to vote on ending electronics program

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The city of Batavia wants to close its electronics recycling drop-off program, due to some problems that have arisen with it, officials said.

The Batavia aldermen sitting on the city’s Committee of the Whole on Tuesday were in support of city staff drafting a

written resolution to terminate the intergovernmental agreement between Batavia and Kane County for the drop-off center.

The drop-off location, at 200 N. Raddant Road, Batavia, has become a drop-off point for all of southern Kane County. Residents bring large electronics, such as older TVs that weigh up to 80 pounds, and leave them

scattered about the site for city employees to lift and move, Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm said.

“It’s just gotten to be quite a burden for little, direct benefit to the city,” Holm said at the committee’s Tuesday meeting.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he has heard from residents who were concerned the center would close because they

Parents are asked to make sure their families follow these safety tips: • Wear light-colored clothing or some type of reflective material for better visibility; • Ensure costumes fit and are worn in a manner that prevents tripping; • If children wear masks, make sure they can see clearly and that their visibility is not obstructed; • Small children should always be accompanied by an adult; • Go out in the daylight when possible and carry a flashlight for use if out after dark; • Only give and accept wrapped candy; • Examine all candy before allowing children to eat it; • Carrying hard props – such as swords and daggers – should be substituted with

‘For us, it’s a big deal’ Campton Hills hosts 1st business after-hours event

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills will have its first Business After Hours event from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Tavern

in the Hills, 40W188 Campton Crossings.

The Economic Development Committee is hosting the event, seeking all brick-and-mortar and home-based business owners to attend. The event is also an open meeting of the committee.

Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen said this first after-hours event is significant in the life of the business community in Campton Hills.

“We know we have a little gem of a downtown here, and we need to find a way to improve that,” Johnsen said.

“We need to retain our existing businesses and recruit new businesses to fill our vacancies,” Johnsen said. “And in order to do that, we want to first ask our local businesses what we should be focusing on in our attempt to draw new businesses and retain existing ones.”

Light refreshments will be

served, and a cash bar will be available. Business owners will have an opportunity to network and give feedback on how the Economic Development Committee can promote local business.

In addition, Johnsen said the committee will introduce a commercial marketing tagline for Campton Hills.

Johnsen said she expected about 20 business owners at the event.

“For us, it’s a big deal,” said Tom Jassoy, chairman of the Economic Development Committee. “Campton Hills is a smaller community, and we don’t have a chamber, so this

is a way to stimulate the local businesses and try to get something developed at the local level with both home- and site-based businesses, all in the Campton Hills area.”

Jassoy said a chamber could be formed if there is enough interest.

Born in Wilmette, Murray currently resides in Los Angeles, but Thursday night he will take the stage along with Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops and Jeff Davis as part of the Whose Live Anyway improv comedy tour for a 90-minute show at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, starting at 7:30 p.m.

But Murray, brother of actor Bill Murray, lives and breathes Chicago. If his love for the city wasn’t big enough, his passion for the Cubs, and their current postseason run has grown his love even more.

Going to games since he was 5 years old, Murray said he hasn’t quite experienced anything like what this year’s team has brought to the city. Murray and Stiles attended Monday night’s playoff game at Wrigley Field against the St. Louis Cardinals, and Murray said he planned to be at Tuesday’s game as well.

“I don’t want to say the players aren’t aware of the history, but they aren’t fazed by it,” Murray said. “They’re too young and just play ball like they’re supposed to. It’s an exciting time to be in the city and an exciting time to be a Cubs fan.”

“In a perfect world, I would spend most of my days here,” Murray added. “The good thing about living in [Los Angeles] is

There’s no doubt Murray is happy to be back in the area, doing what he loves most, but as nervous as one would think he’d be taking the stage, with nothing prepared, in front of upwards of 1,600 people, Murray said he gets more nervous watching Cubs games.

“Some people think that would be the most terrifying thing in the world,” Murray

said of taking the stage with nothing prepared. “To us, it’s fun. To be able to make a living making people laugh, boy I’ll tell you, what a crazy, yet awesome, opportunity.”

If the show sounds familiar, the comedy tour is a spin-off of the popular ABC and The CW show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” In fact, Stiles, Proops and Davis have all appeared on the show, but Murray has only been with the improv group for the past few years.

For those unfamiliar with the show, Thursday night will feature a 90-minute show of all improvised comedy, songs and

made up skits all based on suggestions from the audience.

Stiles, who has starred on several TV shows including “Two and a Half Men,” said although the show took a 10-year break, switching from ABC to The CW, it seemed when the first show went back on the air, the group didn’t miss a beat.

“It was nice to have the break, but when we got back, the set was the same, the audience was in the same place. It was like we just went for a long lunch and came back,” Stiles said. “I’ve been doing this for quite some time, and it’s because I enjoy doing it. You

never get bored, that’s for sure.

We are all really good friends, and it becomes second nature to come up with things when we’re out on the stage.”

Murray jumped on board with instinctively knowing what the guys behind him may be doing, but says one thing is for sure, he’s happy to be doing some shows back in the place he grew up.

“When we go different places, where some of the other guys are from, they know the lingo for things,” Murray joked.

“I know the references here, and it makes you feel at home.”

Murray couldn’t help but continue to refer to the Cubs playoff run and said during his time here, as fun as the shows will be, he’s glad the show’s off days are the days on which the Cubs played.

“They can’t be everywhere at once, but they are at the stops where there seems to be a problem.”

Gengler wrote that those at the sheriff’s office tell people to “drive near buses and schools like it is their child’s school or bus.”

“Driving near school buses is something that people need to take seriously,” Gengler added.

Officials finding it difficult to follow up on complains of cars passing buses

Police: Man killed in Fabyan-Route 31 crash was Geneva resident

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Police on Tuesday identified the male driver who died after a two-vehicle crash Sunday at Fabyan Parkway and Route 31 as a Geneva resident.

Todd Baker, 66, of Geneva, was turning left onto northbound Route 31, or Batavia Avenue, from eastbound Fabyan Parkway in a red 1967 Sunbeam Alpine, Batavia police reported, when a 2004 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle driven by an 18-year-old Geneva man was driving west on Fabyan, approaching Batavia Avenue.

The Sunbeam, driven by Baker, apparently turned left in front of the jeep, and the two vehicles collided, states a news release from Batavia police, noting both vehicles had green lights.

The Sunbeam vehicle sustained damage from its frontend to its passenger side, Bata-

via Detective Kevin Bretz said Tuesday in a phone interview.

The Jeep Liberty sustained front-end damage, Bretz said.

Baker was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva and then flown by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with serious injuries, states the release.

Baker died at 1:40 a.m. Monday, according to the release.

A female passenger in the Sunbeam was ejected from the vehicle, the release states. She was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by helicopter from the crash scene.

“She remains at the hospital, her condition unknown at this time,” states the release, which was issued Tuesday morning.

An investigation into the crash indicated that Baker and his passenger were not wearing seat belts at the time of the incident, Bretz said.

The driver of the Jeep refused medical treatment at the scene, according to the release.

10 Police find mangled cat under bumper after driving complaint

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A 25-year-old man faces drunken driving charges after multiple sheriff’s officials were dispatched to LaFox Road for a reckless driver, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Danny Luna, of the 1900 block of Lake Shore Drive, Belvidere, was charged Oct. 4 with

driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.08 percent and improper lane use.

Another driver called Danny Luna 911 about Luna, who was driving a 2013 black Honda Civic south on LaFox Road, police

reported. Witness reports indicated Luna went into opposing traffic lanes, hit a construction barricade on Route 20, reached 100 mph and went off the road several times, according to the report.

A sergeant, deputy and two officers were dispatched to LaFox Road and Route 64 in Campton Hills about 7:10 p.m. for the complaint and located Luna after he turned into a

driveway off LaFox Road south of Route 38, police reported.

Luna reportedly told police he left Elgin for DeKalb and that he pulled over because he accidentally went into a ditch while driving on LaFox Road.

He claimed the damage to his car was old, but the bumper and grill had fresh grass and debris wedged inside it, there were dents and scratches on the hood and “a freshly killed

cat wedged under the bumper,” police reported.

The report indicated the cat was “badly mangled,” and the responding officer was unable to see identification tags or check for a microchip.

Luna, whose blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit, was unable to post bond and was turned over to jail personnel for processing, police reported.

Police seek subjects in Kaneville Township crash involving carjacked vehicle

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com KANEVILLE TOWNSHIP – Kane County Sheriff’s Office officials continued to search on Tuesday for two people who were involved in an early morning crash on Interstate 88 in Kaneville Township that included a vehicle that had been carjacked.

On Tuesday morning, a news release was issued stating that two suspicious people were reported near a park in Kaneville, but that deputies from the sheriff’s office were

unable to locate anyone.

By Tuesday afternoon, officials stated that deputies from the sheriff’s office were able to review surveillance video from a nearby business and determined that the people seen at the park were not the subjects being sought in connection with the incident. Police stated that the subjects being sought are black males, including one with dreadlocks. The people seen at the park were white females, police said.

The original incident took place at approximately 1 a.m. today, Oct. 13. Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputies were notified by Illinois State Police that they investigated a vehicle crash on I-88 near Dauberman Road in Kaneville Township about 12:10 a.m. The vehicle involved was stolen during a carjacking in Chicago, states the release.

One subject was taken into custody at the scene, and two others fled on foot. The two subjects who fled were not im-

mediately located, states the release.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. today, sheriff’s deputies responded to the village of Kaneville for a report of a suspicious person. An area resident reported that she saw two people near a park in town.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, stated that the office will continue to have an increased presence in the area. He urged people to lock their doors, both in their cars and at their homes.

trict officials in the morning sent out a notification to parents that “we are asking that parents work together to help supervise all bus stops this morning. Additionally, please note that all schools will be extra vigilant on and around the campuses until the situation is resolved.”

By Tuesday afternoon, Kaneland had sent out another email indicating that “local police officials have given the school district the ‘green light’ to resume all regular school activities, effective immediately.”

Judge said it is important to know what cancer is – an abnormal cell that continues to grow over time – and how such factors as exercise and nutrition can affect it.

Contract gives county sheriff, correctional officers clean slate

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A collective bargaining agreement approved by the Kane County Board on Tuesday not only gives raises to the county’s correctional officers, but also provides a clean slate between them and the sheriff.

Sheriff Donald Kramer and union president Don Smith said about 50 grievances were resolved with the contract, which is for fiscal 2014 to 2017.

“It’s good that we can finally move on from the contract,” Smith said, noting it showed what can be done when parties negotiate in good faith and work together.

Kramer expressed similar sentiments.

“I feel pretty good about the contract being settled,” he said. “For me, it helps stabilize the correctional center.”

Neither man knew offhand

the exact percentages regarding the raises, but Smith described them as “fair” and on par with those given to employees in patrol.

Nearly $922,000 will be distributed as retroactive pay, Kramer said.

The agreement also included wages, such as those for entry-level positions, that are similar to those offered by other counties in the area, Kramer said.

More than 100 officers work in corrections, which has five vacancies, Kramer said. Openings might be filled by current applicants, he said, but he hopes to hire quality people with a desire to work in corrections longterm.

With some employees nearing retirement, he said, having a pool of candidates ready is important.

“I want to be ahead of the curve,” he said.

POLICE REPORTS Kane County sheriffs • An attempted residential burglary was reported Sunday, Oct. 4, in the 38W200 block of Mallard Lake Road, St. Charles. Screens were reportedly removed from

two windows and damaged. The estimated cost to fix and replace the screens was $200.

• A recycling container valued at $100 was reported stolen Wednesday, Oct. 7, from the 4N000 block of Thornapple Road, St. Charles.

It’s something many people take for granted, but there truly is something to be said about the power of parks and recreation. From the child learning to dance, to the family playing in a local park, to a group of kids forming lifelong friendships in summer camp, park districts play a crucial role in the community.

In recent years, Elburn residents have had no access to a local park district of their own; therefore, they must travel to other towns and pay higher nonresident fees for programs and services.

In a strategic and creative move, Allison Niemela, executive director for the Batavia Park District, approached Elburn Village Administrator Erin Willrett about the possibility of forming a partnership. The goal is to give Elburn residents access to all the Batavia Park District has to offer.

The two community leaders put their heads together and came up with a partnership beneficial to all parties.

A membership plan was created to allow Elburn residents to pay the equivalent of what a Batavia resident

November is American Diabetes Month and, according to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes can lead to gum disease and eventually tooth loss.

Emerging research also suggests that the relationship between gum disease and diabetes is twoway. Not only are diabetics more susceptible to gum disease, but gum disease has the potential to affect blood sugar levels.

Diabetes affects your body’s ability to process sugar. In Type I diabetes, the body doesn’t make enough insulin, a hormone that carries sugar from your blood to the cells, says the American Dental Association. In Type II diabetes, the body doesn’t respond to insulin. Both types cause blood sugar levels to soar, affecting all parts of the body, including the teeth and gums.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Pre-

vention, diabetics are twice as likely to develop gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease causing inflammation of the gums, irritation, redness and swelling. Untreated, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis, a much more severe form of gum disease whereby the gums start to pull away from the teeth, forming deep pockets of germs and pus, according to the American Diabetes Association.

If periodontitis is left untreated gum surgery may save the teeth but at this point, the teeth loosen and may eventually fall out or have to be pulled.

Regular dental visits are important as well as self-care of gum disease through brushing and flossing. Professional teeth cleanings on a regular basis play a significant role in improving blood sugar control in diabetics.

ST. CHARLES – A program, “A Murder of Crows,” is set from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28, at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles.

Why Ryan should take the speaker job

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post There are plenty of reasons – including his own sanity – for Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, not to take the speaker of the house job. And under no circumstances should he take the job without certain conditions.

His spokesman said not to expect any news this week, which still suggests he is pondering the issue.

With all of that, however, he should take the spot (with conditions) for a number of reasons: 1. His future prospects would be enhanced if he stood up, even for a short time, to help unify the party and lead the House through a rocky time.

2. He does not need to be chairman of Ways and Means to get his policy ideas to the floor. To the contrary, he knows what his policy objectives are; now he can be the one to draw the conference together and get votes on tax and health care reform.

3. If he succeeds, he will bridge the gap between establishment and angry tea partyers, channeling both sides into a constructive reform agenda.

4. As a defense hawk and foreign policy internationalist, he would be positioned to push the White House toward action, continue to increase defense spending and try to push through reauthorization of sanctions, as well as new ones.

5. While he wants to limit time on the road, he nevertheless will cement and expand his fundrais-

ing base, which will come in handy in any future run for the presidency.

By the way, Mitt Romney can decide to step up and do some of the fundraising for Ryan. Romney’s earned a place as senior statesman.

6. He can explicitly limit his tenure to the balance of the president’s term, if he likes.

There is no denying the job would entail plenty of headaches and risks for Ryan. Nevertheless, as Chris Spatola writes, we have become more tribalistic and angry in our politics. The problem with Washington these days, he observes, is that politicians “have become so dogmatic in adhering to ideology that it has paralyzed them. This fundamentalist approach to politics has created an establishment political system that is not only dysfunctional, but also cruel. In fact, the cruelty is perhaps most responsible for the dysfunction.”

Spatola’s insight is dead on that both Donald Trump and Ben Carson’s rhetoric “has been so toxic and degrading that it has only served to foment our discontent, not soothe it; and neither candidate has made a case that he would be prepared to productively govern.”

I cannot think of a sunnier personality or better temperament than Ryan for soothing that polarized, nasty atmosphere that pervades our politics.

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com AURORA – Aside from Tuesday’s match at Marmion providing a good nonconference opponent for St. Charles East, the Saints were going into a place where the Cadets boys soccer team hasn’t lost in over three years.

Mitch Dorsey scored less than a minute into the game for his first of two goals to give East a lead it did not relinquish as the Saints defeated Marmion, 5-1, in the nonconference matchup.

For the Cadets, it was the first time they have been defeated at home since Oct. 10, 2012, a 2-1 loss to Wheaton Academy.

“It’s tough for that kind of streak to end in a game like this,” Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro said. “They had much more effort than we

East (12-5-4) is now unbeaten in its last nine matches and, after a slow start to the season, really seems to be hitting its stride at the perfect time.

“We came into this season with a lot of guys who had never been on varsity before, including myself,” junior defender Jack Kempff said.

“I think it took us a couple weeks playing together to figure out everyone’s strengths.

Once we figured that out, we were able to string some wins together and really took off.”

Dorsey’s opening goal came 41 seconds into the match on what seemed like a misplayed ball by Marmion goalkeeper Matt Fletcher.

The Cadets (9-6-3) didn’t waste time striking back, when Sean Miller’s shot from outside the box found the upper left corner to tie the game.

Dorsey struck back in the 33rd minute to give the Saints a 2-1 halftime lead.

East started both halves strong as Dizdarevic scored just over a minute into the second half, which seemed to be a back-breaker for Marmion.

“It’s great that we have a number of guys that can put the ball in the net,” Dizdarevic said. “Our guys have confidence to get the job done.

We have great depth on this team, and we’re confident that someone is going to come out and score, no matter who it is.”

Cam is a senior football player and the Saints leading rusher this season. He has rushed for 350 yards averaging 70 yards per game with a long of 50 yards.

He also has 3 touchdowns on the year.

The Geneva Boys Soccer Team closed out the month of September with three consecutive shutouts. Senior defender Drew Klaus was an integral part of that defensive effort.

Emma placed 5th overall at the prestigious “First to the Finish” Invitational which is viewed as an excellent gauge of the top runners in Illinois.

She broke 17 minutes which is the first time a BHS Girls cross country runner has gone that fast.

She has been Batavia’s #1 runner all season.

Hannah Anderson is a Freshman running on the Varsity Girls Cross Country team. She has been the number 2 runner on Varsity. She is new to running, but works hard at practice everyday.

She has won awards at the Elgin Invite (19th place), Plainfield Invite (20th place) and Rockford (3rd place).

Josie had a scoring average of 38.4 for the month of September taking 1st place at the Belvidere Co-op triangular.

In addition, she took 1st place at Winnebago High School, the West Chicago Wildcat Open and also at Marengo High School. She finished second against Richmond High School and at the 14 team Elgin Country Club Invite

The Saints came in not knowing a whole lot about the Cadets, which is similar to the feel many teams will have with the postseason just around the corner.

“I told the lads at halftime today that this was playoff soccer,” Jennison said. “I think Marmion is an extremely physical group and have some great athletes, and they can punish you if don’t react to some things they do.”

“We know we’re not going to be able to play the way we want to every time we take the field,” Jennison added. “After recognizing that in the first half, that plan B was essential. Again, with that Conant (regional) game in mind next week, we were able to put some of that game planning

four shutouts in their last nine games and have limited teams’ scoring chances as the year has gone on.

Kempff is someone that Jennison said ‘always works hard and doesn’t get some of the credit he deserves,’ but along with seniors Brandon DiOrio and Tyler Champine in the back line, East’s defense has been as strong as any around over the past few weeks.

“The defense has just been playing very compact lately,” Kempff said. “We’re able to just stick with our guy and have great communication.

It doesn’t hurt that we have some height on the back line as well.”

Steve Owens (5 saves) and Kevin Cook (2) each played a half in goal for the Saints in the win. Fletcher made five saves in goal, taking the loss for Marmion.

Each team has one game remaining in the regular season, both Thursday, as the Cadets host Wheaton Academy and East will host Elgin.

Sure, as the Bulldogs will gather for a team dinner Thursday, the eve of Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division title tilt at Burgess Field, defensive coordinator Matt Holm will give a stirring address as a motivational side dish.

“Every year, he gives a super passionate speech,” Bulldogs senior defensive end Derek Nutley said. “It’s crazy, the passion our coaches have for the game. It’s un-

believable.”

Holm is but one of a handful of Batavia alumni on the staff of another former Bulldog, fifth-year head coach Dennis Piron.

Offensive line coach P.J. White and receivers coach Bai Kabba assist the varsity, while Alvin Cole (linemen), Steve Bailey (running backs) and Shane Holl (defensive line) serve in volunteer roles.

Batavia product Mike Theriault is the program’s head freshman coach, and counts fellow former Bulldogs Alex Beckmann (defensive backs) and Ryan Sullivan (wide receivers) on his staff. Sullivan also is a volunteer.

“It helps us connect with them a lot. They’re really special guys, because they come

from the same thing we come from,” Nutley said. “I mean, just to know that they’ve been there, they’ve done that.

“And even though they weren’t on, maybe, winning teams, they know what it takes, and they’ve got the same mentality that we’ve got.”

Line him up: Although he usually is positioned on the right side of the Vikings’ offensive line, senior Loudon Vollbrecht entered the season as a swing tackle in coach Rob Wicinski’s scheme.

Thus far, that has not included Vollbrecht shifting to take defensive snaps for any extended period.

“It’s more of a fallback thing for when someone gets hurt,” Vollbrecht said.

Geneva’s defense has re-

mained healthy throughout its unbeaten start, including last week’s effort at UEC crossover foe Glenbard East.

The Rams had averaged 40 points a game in their first six games before the Vikings clamped down in a 39-21 victory.

Meanwhile, a Geneva offensive line that was one of the team’s greener position groups during the preseason has jelled quickly. The unit includes seniors Matt Pawlak, Matt Julseth, John Boenzi and Bobby Ariss.

“We’ve got great personnel,” Vollbrecht said. “It’s a weekly process.”

Thirty-one savors: Friday’s game will mark the first time in 31 years that Mike Gaspari has not been part of the madness.

Batavia’s head coach from 1985 to 2010, Gaspari served as the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014 before joining the Aurora University coaching staff in the offseason.

Batavia’s offense still features multiple sets and formations even with Gaspari gone.

“It comes down to everybody, not just the starters,” junior offensive lineman Jackson Lambert said. “It comes down to everybody in practice. Everybody’s got to try their best. And we have great depth, more than just our starters. And everybody really works hard.”

Gaspari won 135 games in 26 seasons as Batavia head coach, including 16 against the Vikings.

I heard some chatter about the pin placements at Cog Hill. What made them so tough?

They really placed them on slopes, so it was really hard to try to get the ball to stick close to the pin. So I learned very

quickly that you needed to keep it below the pin (Monday). It was really important.

Middle schools don’t offer competitive golf. How much does that put a premium on summer tournaments for you growing up?

Just being able to compete in the summer, I find it so fun.

And then to be able to have the opportunity to come out more competitive golf with the team over the fall, I thought it was really awesome.

Where is a favorite practice spot of yours?

Oh, Cantigny (in Wheaton). ...

Obviously, the course is great, and just the practice facility they have is so above and beyond.

that’s pretty normal,” Hawkins said. “I felt pretty confident in the way they were playing, that they could dig themselves out of a hole.”

Elgin (9-16, 1-5) was unable to maintain the momentum in the second set as the North Stars led from start to finish.

“I knew the second game was going to be tougher,” Stewart said. “Whenever you’re close with the team on their home court in game one, they come back out more focused and fired up in game two, so I knew it to be a little tougher. But, overall, I’m pretty happy with the effort.”

Daley Krage had nine kills for North while classmate Jaclyn Taylor dished out 13 assists.

“This was definitely one of our goals at the beginning of the season and the guys earned it,” North coach Eric Willson said. “It’s been a long time coming, but I’m just so proud of this group of guys.

They have worked so hard from the offseason until now and it’s great to see that hard work pay off. They deserve this.”

The North Stars’ next contest will be Tuesday as part of the Class 3A Bartlett Regional, as they take on the winner of a play-in game between Rolling Meadows and Glenbard East.

Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week Megan Furtney helped the St. Charles North girls golf team to the first team sectional title in program history Monday. The freshman standout, just a year removed from Haines Middle School, shot a 69 and is bound for this weekend’s Class AA state tournament in downstate Forsyth.

Here’s an edited transcript of Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley’s chat with Furtney:

ST. CHARLES – Seniors on the St. Charles North girls volleyball team will remember Tuesday evening for more than being recognized for their contributions to the program.

They also will relish achieving one of the team’s goals for the season – a perfect Upstate Eight Conference River Division record.

The North Stars topped Elgin in two sets, 25-19, 25-13, on senior night, completing their River Division schedule with a 6-0 mark.

The unblemished division record also guarantees North (26-3, 6-0 UEC River) will be

alone at the top of the standings, unlike last year.

“This is something that the seniors have set out to do since they were freshmen and was very important to them,” North coach Lindsey Hawkins said. “Last year we had to share [the title] with [St. Charles East] and Geneva, a blow to our self-esteem, I guess because we really wanted it. So this year they made it their goal to come out and show people that they were the best.”

“It’s awesome,” said Claire Anderson, who had six kills. “It’s really a great way to end our senior year.”

overcome the boneon-bone effects. Thus, regular exercise is good for the joints.

But there are exceptions, and I’m an example. I jogged pretty much every day for 35 years – until my right hip joint wore out.

My hip bone was rubbing against my thigh bone, and it hurt.

Yet my left hip was completely normal. I got a right hip replacement, and the pain has been gone ever since.

So why did one of my hips go bad, but the other didn’t? I had an injury to the main muscle in my right thigh when I was a teenager. That muscle has never been as strong since. Years of jogging on asphalt probably put too much stress on my right hip.

I advise my patients who, like you, come from a family that tends to get osteoarthritis to choose regular exercise that minimizes the striking of bone on bone.

You can do other things to protect yourself against getting osteoarthritis.

If you are obese, lose weight. The extra weight puts extra stress on most of your joints.

If you have injured a joint – particularly if you have had a fracture that involves the joint – be especially careful about activities that stress that joint. Ditto for injuries to muscle that protects a joint.

Bottom line: Moving is better than not moving – for your joints and for overall health.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a shy 17-year-old young woman. I’ve only dated two guys, and both of them stopped calling after a couple of dates. I’m convinced they stopped showing interest in me because I’m shy and not a good conversationalist.

If he’s a hockey fan, for instance, it wouldn’t hurt to do a little research about the Toronto Maple Leafs so you can ask him a knowledgeable question or two about their season. If he’s a music fan,

But avoid asking him questions he can answer with a simple yes or no. It’s much easier to keep a conversation going if your questions require a more involved answer.

The most difficult part of any conversation is getting started. Once it’s under way, you’ll start to relax and feel confidence in yourself. A good conversationalist is able to strike a balance between listening to the other person and revealing her own interest and passions.

Remember, this guy also is going to be very interested in learning about you as well.

Don’t hide yourself from him.

Answer his questions and enjoy the evening.

I do agree most parents are more concerned for the safety and welfare of their daughters than their sons.

This is true not only because females can get pregnant. Girls also are physically more vulnerable.

If you watch TV or read the newspaper, you are aware females are the victims of male brutality far more often than the other way around. It’s a scary world for young women, especially from a parent’s point of view.

thing as a dumb question. The only way to learn is to ask and never feel ashamed for doing so.

It’s all right to kiss on the first date if it’s by mutual consent. In a Gallup poll, most 15- to 17-year-olds said they don’t kiss on the first date. Forty-three percent said yes, while 57 percent said no kissing on a first date.

Dear Dr. K: I like to exercise, but people in my family tend to get osteoarthritis. Is exercise good or bad for my joints?

Dear Reader: A joint is a place where two or more bones come together. Your question has a simple and a more complicated answer.

The simple answer is: For most people, regular exercise is good for the joints.

The more complicated answer is certain types of exercise can put pressure on the joints. For example, jogging on hard surfaces, such as street asphalt, causes the bones of the pelvis, hip and knee to pound against each other. That pounding can start to damage joints.

On the other hand, even walking around puts pressure on many joints – for example, the spine, hip and knee. Yet most people don’t develop serious arthritis from walking.

That’s because muscles around a joint protect it from being injured.

They help keep the bones from pounding on each other. Regular exercise strengthens those muscles, and those muscles protect the joints.

Our joints are like car tires. The more you drive on tires, the faster they’ll need to be replaced.

Regular exercise that doesn’t cause bone to drive against bone – such as swimming or, to some extent, an elliptical cross-trainer – is clearly beneficial. It strengthens the muscles.

Dear Abby: I am a 30-year-old single mom of two young girls.

After my divorce, I returned to my hometown where my family is.

I’m enrolled in school full time and set to graduate in two semesters. I have a 3.7 GPA, my girls are well-adjusted and well-behaved, and I have my own place.

My mom primarily watches my girls when I’m in school, and I feel lucky to have her support.

The other day, Mom came into my room and opened my bedside drawer.

Like most people, this is where I keep my most private things.

She discovered I had a pack of cigarettes and some marijuana.

Abby, I don’t smoke often, but sometimes when the kids are down and things are taken care of, I like to smoke a joint, watch some shows and fall asleep. I take care of my responsibilities, and I don’t feel like an occasional joint impacts me negatively.

Mom now says she will no longer watch her grandchildren, and doesn’t want to see me again. I feel completely hurt, violated and disrespected.

We said some nasty things to each other, and I can’t help but feel she is completely wrong for reacting the way she did.

That’s a pretty cheesy comment, but in this deal, declarer must bear up at trick three. He is in four spades.

West leads the heart ace: three, nine, four. West cashes the heart king: six, two, jack. West continues with the heart queen. What should declarer do?

First, South should check his losers.

He seems to have only three: two in hearts and one in clubs. But he must also worry about that third heart.

East has played high-low, indicating a doubleton. Yes, he might be fooling, but what if he is not? Then he is threatening to overruff the dummy at trick three and give declarer an extra loser.

At trick three, South has four dummy choices: ruff low, ruff middle, ruff high, or discard. Which should he choose?

As I am confident you have worked out by now, the second-best play is to ruff with dummy’s spade nine. Maybe West has the 10. Here, though, East overruffs and the contract goes down one.

Instead, declarer should discard one of dummy’s clubs. In this way, he trades a dangerous ruff in hearts for a much safer ruff in clubs.

Suppose West shifts to a club.

South wins with dummy’s ace (the honor from the shorter side first), draws two rounds of trumps, cashes his club king, ruffs his last club in the dummy, plays a diamond to his ace, draws East’s third trump, and claims.

If an opponent may objectionably overruff, consider shedding an inevitable loser.
