Hultgren, Anderson divided on issues in 14th Congressional District race A Republican congressman said he is running for re-election to continue the work he’s started in Washington, D.C. His Democratic challenger seeks to change the atmosphere there.

Dennis Anderson of Gurnee is once again vying to unseat Rep. Randy Hultgren, R–Winfield, in the 14th Congressional District, which includes Kane and six other counties.

Anderson, who lost to Hultgren in 2012, continues to hold several open town hall meetings this year to increase his visibility among voters. He often tells residents he will represent everyone in the district if elected.

Anderson said the two issues he hears about most frequently is dysfunction in Congress and the economic recovery still has not reached everyone in the district.

Some jobs bills approved by Congress don’t actually contain work and opportunities for residents, Anderson said.

Anderson said Congress should review small business owners’ access to credit so they can launch their enterprises or expand their current operations. Ander-

son also said he would vote not to repeal the Affordable Care Act since it is providing health care for uninsured residents, but he said Congress should focus on improving it.

Anderson said young entrepreneurs are not held back by regulation and taxes, but Hultgren disagrees.

Hultgren said the free market creates jobs, not Congress. He said the Affordable Care Act, which he unsuccessfully voted to repeal, has made businesses struggle as they attempt to comply with the law.

“Ask them what would it take to hire one more person ... and they say to get the government out of their way,” Hultgren said during the Chronicle editorial board interview.

It’s the Year of the Scarecrow Song debuted, yearlong campaign announced at closing ceremonies

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Scarecrow Fest might be over, but the Year of the Scarecrow is only just beginning.

Sunday’s closing ceremony of the three-day festival revealed a new, yearlong marketing campaign to promote St. Charles to visitors regionally and nationally as the festival prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary next year.

“That is a big deal,” said Lynn Caldwell, of the milestone. Caldwell is vice president of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors.

The visitors bureau produces the annual event.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina told the crowd at Lincoln Park that a for-

mal proclamation officially launching the Year of the Scarecrow will be presented at the Oct. 20 City Council meeting.

The announcement was followed by the performance of an original song, “What’s in a Scarecrow,” which was written by Lynn Caldwell’s son, Ryan Caldwell.

The 22-year-old is a recent graduate of Millikin University’s music business program and decided to write the song after overhearing plans for the yearlong campaign, he said.

He said the chorus was inspired by the Chuck and Char blog, specifically an entry about building the perfect scarecrow.

formed the tune, Steve Sledzinski and Crystal Skipworth – Steel Beam Theatre actors portraying Chuck and Char – danced among the audience.

“What’s in a scarecrow,” the band sang. “Hey, just ask Chuck and Char. I’m sure they’ll know.”

Amy Egolf, executive director of the visitors bureau, said the organization won’t have statistics on the weekend’s festival for about a month, but organizers were very pleased with the crowds.

“Obviously, the weather was wonderful,” she said.

She noted they were happy longtime participant Ted Eynik of St. Charles was able to make a scarecrow this year after taking a year off.

Geneva’s audit gets high marks for detail, transparency GENEVA – Aldermen acting as the committee of the whole Monday unanimously approved the comprehensive annual financial report for the year ending April 30, 2014.

Fredrick Lantz of the auditing firm, Sikich, LLP, gave the city high marks for detail and transparency.

“It’s really a very very good document,” Lantz said. “The city has voluntarily chosen to prepare a comprehensive annual financial report ... that goes far above and beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles and the minimum requirements of Illinois compiled statutes. The city does so in the spirit of full accountability and full transparency

... to provide [residents] with all the information they could ever want.”

Lantz said the city’s report puts it in the 1 percent of all municipalities of 25,000 or less in the nation.

“We’re obviously pleased with the audit report,” Mayor Kevin Burns said. “It’s not surprising to us at all, that we con-

tinue to run a tight ship. We continue to invest our money wisely and provide the services our residents and businesses expect.”

The report is part of the information packet on the city’s website, www.geneva.il.us.

Aldermen also approved a $24,500 expenditure to repair an emergency generator at the

Officials said the food bank requested the amendment to allow an area for existing compactors and sorting operations to be relocated, thereby freeing up additional storage space.

The city council will take final action on the recommendations.

‘ANGEL’ FINDS HER MISSION Geneva teen’s organization aims to ‘break the stigma of mental illness’

alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Smiling teenagers crowded Flair on Third on Saturday afternoon in downtown Geneva, preparing makeup, hair and anything else that needed to be just right for the Geneva High School homecoming dance that night.

It was a festive scene, sponsored by a group – A Cutter’s Guardian Angel – that aims to spread awareness about a serious issue, cutting. The group was launched by Bree Carey, 16, who is a junior at Geneva High School. Mayoclinic.com describes cutting as “the act of deliberately harming your own body” as “an unhealthy way to cope with emotional pain, intense anger and frustration.”

According to the A Cutter’s Guardian Angel website, the organization aims “to help teens and their families learn to deal with mental illness in a positive and effective way.” It also “takes part in the attempt to break the stigma of mental illness.”

Mimi McNulty, a senior at Geneva High School, was at Saturday’s event. She described Carey as “amazing” and praised the event as a great way to spread awareness. McNulty’s eyes lit up as she emerged from getting her makeup done, but when the topic of the reason behind the event came up, she went silent for a second and admitted “it makes me feel a little uncomfortable.” McNulty said she had never gone through cutting but said she felt bad for those who do.

“It’s really out there, with the name of the organization,” McNulty said. “I talked to a teacher about it, how that made me uncomfortable. … She said that’s probably the point.”

She is an exchange student from Tunisia. depression started to become “just overwhelming.” She said there’s a difference between sadness and depression, saying sadness is like a rain shower, but depression is like a thunderstorm or a drizzle that lasts for days, and because there are so many emotions involved “it’s exhausting.”

“I had a good life, but I was so sad all the time, and I had no reason to be sad,” Carey said.

She turned to cutting, something she then struggled to stop doing, she said. She said it came to an end on Nov. 26, 2012.

She said she had been clean from self injury for four weeks,

but she was feeling an urge to do it again.

“I saw no reason to stop,” she said.

Her parents had locked up every sharp object. She was upset and texted her boyfriend.

She said she stopped texting him, but he kept calling back, not letting her go through with cutting again. When he told her she didn’t need to do it, she said she finally understood.

“You can’t break free until you realize it’s a want, not a need,” she said. “I wasn’t drowning. I was purposefully swimming to the bottom of the ocean.”

When she recovered, she wanted to help others. She started on Instagram in January 2013, then took her message to Facebook. Now, A Cutter’s Guardian Angel also has a presence on YouTube, Twitter and online at www.acuttersguardianangel.webs.com. She said she never expected it to grow so quickly.

“I’m kind of a big thinker,” she said. “I like to make huge plans for things that never go anywhere. ... I never actually really thought that it would be so big.”

She has spoken to many youths, and she said she’s

learned to understand cutting can happen anywhere.

“Perfect Geneva isn’t necessarily perfect,” she said. “We have our issues. Everyone has their issues.”

••• At the event at Flair on Third, she had support, from the owners of the business, to her parents, to friends, such as McNulty, and to Roger Breisch, the former executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. Breisch said he plans to become a member of the board as A Cutter’s Guardian Angel aims to become a nonprofit organization. Noting the festive atmosphere Saturday, Breisch said it was appropriate.

“It’s about not being sad and somber,” he said.

Also in attendance were Kathy and Dave Carey, Bree Carey’s parents. They both said they were proud of their daughter’s efforts. They said it was a surprise to them both when Bree Carey started the group.

At first, they didn’t know the endeavor had begun.

“She was a little afraid,” Kathy Carey said. “I think she felt we would say she couldn’t do it.”

But both said they were pleased that the effort had grown. Last month, Bree Carey spoke at a Geneva Public Library event. Word continues to spread, and Bree Carey’s parents said all of it helps as their daughter tries to put attention on an uncomfortable subject.

“One of her goals is to erase the stigma of mental illness,” Dave Carey said.

Liberty Property Trust recently broke ground for a 429,541-square-foot industrial building at 300 Mitchell Road in the Liberty Business Center in North Aurora. The building is the first of three buildings planned for the 81acre park, located at the intersection of Mitchell Road and Interstate 88 in North Aurora.

“We believe this new

building will offer prime institutional-quality industrial space along Interstate 88 desirable for local businesses looking to expand and companies looking to relocate to the metro area,” said Don Schoenheider, vice president and city manager of Liberty Property Trust, according to a news release.

Mitchell Road recently was repaved as a result of the new development, North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco said.

He said the project is an example of the growth the village has been seeing in the past few years.

This is the second indus-

trial building to take hold recently in the village. In November 2013, work began on a 604,565-square-foot industrial building on 32 acres along Orchard Gateway Boulevard, west of Randall Road.

The I-88 Gateway Logistics Center is at 1200 Orchard Gateway Blvd., near a shopping center. Opus Development Company LLC, a subsidiary of The Opus Group, a family of commercial real estate companies headquartered in Minneapolis, is overseeing the project.

The building is near Interstate 88 and is owned by an investment affiliate of USAA Real Estate Company.

David Scudamore of Batavia was driving a minivan north on South Cicero Ave-

nue at 11:40 p.m. when he hit a building in the 4900 block, according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney.

Scudamore was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, where he was pronounced dead.

It appears the crash was caused by a medical condition

that Scudamore had, Sweeney said.

“The accident appears to be medically related,” Sweeney said.

Three adult women who were passengers in the minivan were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and treated for injuries, he said.

Shops are displaying decorating ideas and items for the season, and restaurants are creating dishes using the fall harvest. Who knew how many ways pumpkin could be used?

Get your October off to a spooktacular start by visiting downtown Geneva on a Sunday. A great many places are open on Sundays in downtown Geneva.

The Geneva Public Library is giving you another reason to utilize the costume you spent hours making or hours finding. On Oct. 22, a costume parade will weave through the library for preschoolers, siblings and parents. After the 10 a.m. parade, stay for treats and crafts. Specifics at gpld.org.

Takashio is Japanese for “storm surge,” she said.

Flinn, of Glendale Heights, said she has 23 ferrets at home.

“Ferret math,” Flinn said.

“I started out with a couple from Petco, then I adopted a couple from the shelter. I took a couple in that were supposed go to the shelter that never made it because they ended up staying. Then I got a couple from breeders.”

The event was held for the first time at the Kane County Fairgrounds, a fundraiser for the Greater Chicago Ferret As-

“The show is important because it raises money for the only freestanding ferret shelter in Illinois,” said show director Valerie Michalski of Pingree Grove.

Ferrets – domesticated distant cousins of weasels and skunks – were evident everywhere: snoozing in cages, getting snuggled, petted and played with as well as being studied for judging.

Ferret accoutrements were in abundance, including beds, toys, blankets, carriers and cages – available for purchase and as raffle prizes.

Stephanie McCulloch of Crystal Lake and her daughter, Allora, 13, were selling ferret beds and other items.

“This is my fifth year with the Greatest Ferret Show on Earth,” McCulloch said.

“Whatever you buy goes straight to the ferret shelter.”

McCulloch said she has two ferrets, Tilly and Angelica.

“I love ferrets,” McCulloch said. “They just have unique personalities. Each one does different things, they interact and play well, they are a great animal to have – and they all need homes.”

Some ferret enthusiasts came a long way, such as Sue Wilson of Brisbane, Australia.

She said when she comes to the United States to visit family, she coordinates her travels with the annual event.

Anna May Willing, age 94, died peacefully in St. Charles early Saturday morning, October 11, 2014, surrounded by her family. She died as gracefully as she lived her life.

She was born on June 23, 1920, to John and Martha Deckert Williams in Lily Lake, Campton Township, IL and named Bonnie Helen Williams.

She was orphaned following a tragic automobile accident that claimed the life of her mother three weeks later. She was adopted

by Jens C. and Nona Nielson in September 1921, and her name was changed to Anna May. Growing up in northern Iowa in the area of Northwood, her family struggled during the Great Depression and moved from town to town for support and work. When she was in her teens she was reunited with her family, whom she never knew, and returned to the Fox Valley area.

She met her husband, Herman Willing at a farmers’ dance above Roman’s Tavern in downtown St. Charles and they were married on October 28, 1939 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in St. Charles.

Following their marriage, they farmed in St. Charles and the Janesville, WI area. They ultimately settled at Colonel Baker’s Twin

Anna May was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, St. Charles and Valley Golden Agers.

For many years she volunteered at the Salvation Army’s Golden Diners and their Meals on Wheels program. She was the 1986 V.I.P. Woman of the Year in St. Charles and also recognized as the Salvation Army Volunteer of the Year.

She is survived by her sons, Rick (Sallie) of Bartlett and Robert (Constance) of St. Charles; grandchildren, Amanda (Martin) Estrada of Belgrade, MT, Brett Willing and Carly Rose Willing of Bartlett, Richie Swanson of Genoa, Randy (Brenda) Swanson of Paw Paw, Jeffrey (Heidi) Difazzio of Poland, Kirk of VA, Kevin (Nicole) of S. Elgin, Kimberly (Jerry) Poindexter

of VA and Kristopher (Mary Ann) of Naperville. Several great grandchildren including, Jacob, Victoria, Daniella, Brennan, Mackenna, Addison, Brent, Chelsie, Kassidy and Shane. She also had one greatgreat, grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughters, Jo Anne Difazzio and Judy Swanson; sisters, Stella Stroupe, Roberta Hadick, Nina Bowgren, Louise Hendrix, Ruby Harris; and brothers, Roy, Lyle, David and Clarence; and a great-grandson, Lucas Swanson.

Visitation will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 101 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles on Tuesday, October 14, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a memorial service following at 10:00 a.m. A private burial will be held at Lakewood Memorial in Elgin on Monday.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, St. Charles.

Her ferrets’ names are Tipsi Le Rie, a French diplomat; Tootsie 2736, in witness protection; Begger DaBoy, Hungarian royalty; Mitsi named after Mitsubishi; and Macy after Macy’s. Frank McCormick of Lake Forest, advertising coordinator for the show, also brought two of his ferrets, Toby and Shelby.

“I love ferrets because they’re kind of like puppies that never grow up,” McCormick said.

“I got married and moved to Australia six years ago,” Wilson said. “I have four ferrets: Jessie and James – who are brother and sister – Billy Black Legs and Sandy.”

Wilson was carrying a white, pink-eyed ferret named Vladimir that belonged to someone else, as she could not travel with her own ferrets.

“I was having ferret withdrawal, so I had to borrow one,” Wilson said, burying her face in Vladimir’s fluffy fur.

Ethel Rodriguez of Orland Park was fundraising for the shelter.

“We get no ... funding other than what we glean in donations and events,” Rodriguez said. “We operate a shelter in Lyons, and currently we have 110 ferrets that we medicate, clean, support and put up for

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The purpose of a state constitution is to establish a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS. (a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused.

(7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused.

(8) (7) The right to be reasonably protected from the accused throughout the criminal justice process.

(9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction.

(10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request.

The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

“I saw the article in the Northwest Herald, printed it, and went running around, showing people, telling people we had to do something,” Hempe said. “I thought, ‘What can I do?’ ” The care of 75 quarter horses, now located in Hampshire, was recently taken over by two area animal rescue organizations, Barrington-based Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society and Hands and Hooves of Chicago.

the horses’ care. Before the two organizations teamed up for a rescue mission, the

horses had spent the past two years exposed to harsh weather, surrounded by ex-

cess manure and without any human handling for a majority of that time.

President of the Barrington-based organization Donna Ewing recently called upon members of the horse-loving community for help in finding each of the 75 horses a home. In a week, the response has been overwhelming, Ewing said.

“We have gotten way over 100 applications [to adopt] from all over the United States and Canada,” she said, adding there are about 25 horses remaining to adopt.

“It’s so rewarding to know that there are people out there who care.”

Ewing said the reason Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society got involved was to ensure the horses got a second chance.

“There’s nothing I despise more than slaughterhouses,” she said. “I couldn’t stand the thought of that. That’s why we got involved, why we’ve been working day and night,

Hempe, who has had horses in her life for 50 years, since she was 10, adopted one of the remaining horses Wednesday.

She described the 6-yearold Mr. Recognized – she plans to call him Mr. R – as red with a white star in the middle of

his face, and four tiny white anklet stripes.

“He’s very intelligent and very inquisitive,” Hempe said.

It’s Hempe’s hope Mr. R will be able to be trained as a show horse, but even if that doesn’t pan out, she said he will have a good home and care from now on.

“I know it takes money to keep them and they take a lot of time,” she said, “but they’re so worth it. ... There’s nothing

like it.”

Ewing said the rescue mission put a hold on adoption application forms while they go through the multiple applications they already have received.

Local woman pleads guilty to DUI, letting son drive car

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com A St. Charles woman accused last year of letting her 8-year-old son drive her vehicle has pleaded guilty to multiple charges stemming from that incident, including endangering the life or health of a child, according to Kane County court records.

Cathleen A. Sams, 50, is due in court at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 19 for a sentencing hearing.

According to a St. Charles police report, an officer saw Sams exit the passenger side of her Ford Escape while stopped at a stop sign at Oak and 19th streets in St. Charles on May 25, 2013. Sams reportedly entered the driver’s side of the vehicle and proceeded to make a right-hand turn onto 19th Street without using a signal.

The officer stopped Sams for not using her turn signal and noticed the only other person in the vehicle was an 8-year-old male, police reported.

The officer asked Sams why she was letting an 8-yearold drive the vehicle. She reportedly said the boy was only driving for a short while from her home on Fairview Drive to the corner of 19th and Oak streets, and that he had asked to drive.

In the report, police described Sams as having glassy eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol on her breath.

“This comedic whodunit is a great way for adults to celebrate Halloween and enjoy a night out in downtown Geneva,” said Lisa Pivaronas, Cultural Arts Coordinator and Show Director.

The comedy takes place in the late 1800s, and centers on memorable characters in the small town of Pine Grove.

The reviled and wealthy Albert Webster is set to marry local sweetheart, Kayla May Blossom. When Albert turns up dead the morning of the wedding, the sheriff and his sidekick daughter, Sarah, are tasked with figuring out who arranged for the groom’s demise.

The two leads are played by John Frankenthal (the Sheriff) and Crystal Skipworth (Sarah,

the Sheriff’s daughter). The experienced and talented actors are both long-time residents of Geneva whose enthusiasm for this production will captivate the audience.

“I auditioned for “The Groom Has Cold Feet” because I’ve never been in a murder mystery before! I’m an actor who has the most fun onstage performing comedy and improv, and fortunately for me this show combines both of those elements,” said Crystal Skipworth.

George Nakashima created a special type of modern furniture sometimes called “free-edge.” He designed very simple legs and other furniture parts and created the famous tables topped by a slab of wood with original edges that often include the tree’s bark. Parts of the top were held together with butterfly joints. Nakashima was born in 1905, earned an architecture degree by 1929, then an M.I.T. master’s degree in 1931.

He went to Japan, worked for a famous architect and studied design.

In 1937, while in India, he made his first furniture and in 1940 he returned to the United States to make furniture and teach woodworking.

In 1942, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was interned like others of Japanese descent. At the camp, he met a traditional Japanese carpenter and learned traditional Japanese ways of working with traditional tools and wood. Nakashima was released from the camp in 1943 and moved to Pennsylvania, where he designed and made furniture. Some of his designs were used by famous furniture firms like Knoll and Widdicomb. His chairs and tables are well known, but he also designed a few lamps. A favorite is a lamp made of rings of bent holly and walnut with a fiberglass shade.

Each lamp is different, because the base is created from a piece of wood in its natural shape. One of these lamps made in 1977 sold for $6,875

at a 2013 Rago Arts auction. It is 29 inches high, with a small base and a tall cylindrical shade. Nakashima received numerous awards and was even honored with the Order of the Sacred Treasure by the Emperor of Japan. Nakashima died in 1990 and his daughter Mira Nakashima - Yarnall has continued the business using his designs.

District 101 referendum difficult to back In the Nov. 4 election, Batavia School District 101 is seeking voter approval on the issuance of $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund capital improvements, including potential upgrades to the athletic fields at Batavia High School.

Although we recognize that certain upgrades

throughout the district would be nice to have, it is difficult for us to back this referendum for several reasons.

Homeowners in the area have continued to struggle as the lackluster economy drags on. And though Batavia officials have said the proposal would not result in a tax increase because the district

would pledge existing revenues against the bonds, we realize that skepticism can exist with such claims – and often for good reason.

Second, more specific plans for using the referendum funds – such as deciding on two synthetic turf fields at Batavia High School, as opposed to one – only recently

began to take shape. District 101 Board members approved putting the referendum on the ballot before they had laid out concrete plans for what to do with the money. It makes the entire endeavor seem less organized than it could be. Usually people want to know exactly what products and services they need before

they set a dollar amount to them.

Lastly, the total price tag on the referendum is sizeable, and the overall improvement plan includes many smaller projects. Considering the economy, a smaller plan might have seemed more palatable to residents of the district.

Kane County sheriff: Kramer Two excellent candidates are facing off for the right to become the next Kane County sheriff.

Willie Mayes, a Democrat from Aurora, has spent more than two decades in the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. He has experience as a bomb technician and a crime scene technician, and he has held leadership positions during current Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez’s successful run in the position.

Don Kramer, a Republican from Geneva, has had an impressive career in law enforcement, with more than 30 years of experience in the sheriff’s office and more than 20 years in a leadership position. He has a strong educational background, including a master’s degree in public administration. He is the son of a former Kane County sheriff, George Kramer, who served in the role from 1978 to 1986.

Both candidates have strong ideas about how they would run the office. On his campaign website, Mayes has posted a “100-day plan” that he would implement should he win the election. He is familiar with the challenges that the department faces and has been part of a team that has been able to meet those challenges.

Kramer stresses his ability to create policy and study issues. He appears to be prepared for any situations he must tackle. He also wants to find a way to have a command staff presence at work available around the clock, including weekends.

We believe Kramer’s experience and education combine to make him the best candidate. He is endorsed.

Fire district residents should make educated vote Some residents currently serviced by the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District will vote on a referendum in the Nov. 4 election – approximately 3,000 residents of the district will be asked whether they want to be moved into the territory of the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

The territory in question is bound by LaFox Road to the east, Anderson Road to the west, Campton Hills Road to

the south and Empire Road to the north, although there also is some land included north of Silver Glen Road.

It’s a significant question, and voters should do research and figure out what issues matter most to them.

Officials in the Fox River district say they can respond to many calls in that area faster.

They said they are less expensive and can offer services that equal Elburn’s.

Officials in the Elburn district said they have serviced that area for decades and say they would be the better choice to continue that. They suggest their equipment is superior.

Plus, they say, losing the land would cost the district 10 percent of its land and 20 percent of its value.

Voters need to understand the ramifications of their decision and make an educated vote.

Confident Lillie leads state-bound North Stars, other qualifiers

That hardly keeps the sophomore standout from keeping tabs on herself.

Lillie’s 1-under-par 69 earned medalist honors at Monday’s Class AA Conant Sectional at Fox Run while helping North to second-place team finish of 331. The North Stars advanced to this weekend’s state meet at Hickory Point in Forsyth with their low scorer tabulating her round throughout a soggy day.

“I knew the whole way,” Lillie said. “I’m able to just kind of figure out the score in my head. I started to feel the pressure the last four holes, and I knew I’d just have to par the rest, and I’d be good.”

Lillie did just that, finishing a career-best round and edging classmate Gianna Furrie (74) for the day’s top honor.

Senior Gabi Spinazze (92) and Kayla Janchik (96) rounded out the team’s scoring, but the North Stars largely stayed near champion Maine South (328) and ahead of third-place Wheaton Warrenville South (337) on the strength of their sophomores.

Lillie and Furrie – or Furrie and Lillie, pending the leaderboard – also played crucial roles in North’s ninth-place state finish in 2013.

“More of the same, yeah,” North coach Irish Whalen grinned. “At regionals, Gianna shot a little bit lower.

Then today, Kate went low. …

She feels real good, and with the conditions, she should feel really happy about it.”

The weather actually worsened as the final groups came in and officials figured out the individual team scores and rankings. Intermittent drizzle persisted at times during the day, but heavy rain stayed away from the area until late afternoon.

Guyton, a senior, qualified for her first state meet. coaches followed the mellow path of sitting back and relaxing over an item from the snack bar, many others flocked to the front of the Fox Run event room and channeled their inner Lillie.

They did the math.

Two Chronicle-area girls golfing legacies – Kaneland senior Tori Guyton and St. Charles East freshman Nicole Jordan – followed their older sisters’ footsteps and advanced

as individuals. Jordan sported a Bradley cap, the same school where her sister, Paige, now competes.

“Today, I just made my putts and my irons were on,” Jordan said. “Everything just kind of clicked today.”

Jordan recalls walking Hickory Point during her sister’s past state rounds. Guyton can attest, but also brings a deeper experience with the course. She lived in nearby

Decatur for 11 years before the family relocated in 2007.

Hayley Guyton, now an Illinois State golfer, always spoke fondly of Hickory Point; at last, it’s her sister’s turn to reminisce about her central Illinois roots.

“It’s exciting and awesome to finally get to go downstate and experience something my sister was able to experience all four years,” said Tori Guyton, who with Jordan will make her state debut.

Another athlete looking to join in past sibling revelry, Burlington Central junior Josie Kurosky, carded an 84 and will return to the course today as part of a four-way playoff for the final individual qualifying spot.

In 2012, Kurosky’s older sister, Jenna, became just the second girls golfer to advance to state under veteran coach Deb Twenhafel, who will retire at season’s end.

Josie Kurosky hopes to channel past experience at Fox Run, including two practice rounds in the past week, to pull through today.

“I mean, the pin placements were similar and everything, that was the same,” Kurosky said. “But my chipping and putting could have been better.”

East (fifth, 350) and Batavia (10th, 380) also entered the day with team entries, but were unable to make the top-three cut to qualify for state.

Rose Bundy (85), Reagan Stanton (91) and Kacie Gaffney (93) followed Jordan for the Saints.

Becca Hasemann (91), Erin Ewert (96), Madi McCoy (96) and Francesca Hoffman (97) scored for the Bulldogs. Three of those four will return next season and look to build off the sectional experience.

“The greens are fast. Very soft, but they were fast,” Batavia coach Tim Kauffmann said.

“It’s not a course that you can’t play straight up. You’ve got to have a plan, come out there and execute it. None of our girls really executed what they wanted to do. It was a tough one.”

Five other Chronicle-area individuals fell short of the playoff cut of 84. Geneva senior Nicole Hassels’ 86 came closest.

For North, the round represented a 19-stroke improvement from when it played Fox Run eight weeks ago in the season-opening Conant Early Bird Invite.

Lillie fired an 85 then, but only has steadied since, helping the North Stars win team titles at the Upstate Eight Conference River Division meet and last week’s Burlington Central Regional at Sycamore Golf Club.

“Oh, it’s gone a lot better,” Lillie said. “At the beginning of the season, I felt really good, but then I hit a little bit of a rough patch, then after that, I fixed my swing and I was able to recover from it.”

Lille had three birdies Monday, and is confident she and her teammates can earn more downstate. Spinazze joins Lillie and Furrie as returners from last season’s state team.

‘Energetic’ Pomazak steers North turnaround

St. Charles North football coach Rob Pomazak moved quickly to stamp his personality on the program upon taking over before the 2013 season.

He’s been at the helm for 16 games now, winning 10, but players identified his platform much earlier.

“That’s coach Pomazak in a word, yeah: ‘Energetic,’ probably,” junior safety Jake Spaniol said. “He’s always on us in a positive way. Just always keeps us going. Keeps the motor going.”

Maybe it’s that lingering drive from a background steeped in strength and conditioning. Perhaps it’s the fact the 5-2 North Stars are playoff-eligible for the first time since the 2009 team advanced to a Class 7A state quarterfinal.

In any event, Pomazak isn’t toning it down. He has no reason to lately, as North rebounded from a two-game skid in Weeks 4 and 5 and has a realistic chance at clinching the fourth regular season of at least seven victories in program history.

“The kids, we feel like we’ve taken a big step forward,” Pomazak said.

“They’re playing fast and taking ownership and really feeling good.”

Personnel changes after a Week 4 home loss to Geneva, namely switching Nathan Didier to quarterback and Kyle Novotney to receiver, rekindled the offense, which wants to work fast.

Of course, Pomazak preaches speed in all phases of the game, and players have responded.

“Just working hard at practice, not leaving anything left in the tank, kind of not saving anything for the next day,” Spaniol said. “Just giving your all at practice because coach does condition us pretty well, I think.”

East keeps playoff hopes alive, Kaneland’s run ends Pomazak’s counterpart, St. Charles East coach Bryce Farquhar, steered the Saints to their first objective of the season’s final third last week.

By defeating Larkin, 42-13, the Saints improved to 3-4. East now must win at St. Charles North and West Chicago in the next two weeks to become playoff-eligible.

North can attest to that “nothing’s guaranteed” part, finishing 5-4 in 2013 but not advancing to the postseason because its playoff points – or opponents’ victories – did not stack up against those of its other 5-4 brethren.

Kaneland entered last week in the same scenario as East, needing three straight victories to become playoff-eligible. Morris’ fourth-quarter rally ended those hopes. The Redskins hadn’t defeated their longtime rival in four Northern Illinois Big 12 East meetings.

“It’s pretty big,” Morris defensive lineman Ryan Niewinski said. “We knew it was going to be a hard-fought game.”

Spreading like a brushfire Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly sounded

as if he were starting a countdown.

Instead, he was describing the varied defensive fronts Morris might display at Peterson Field, working out of five-, fourand three-man schemes.

“I mean, everybody kind of does that.

Nobody just sits in one thing anymore,” Fedderly said. “Everybody moves around. … That’s happened for a while now; probably, I don’t know, at least for the last five years everybody has multiple things that they do.”

Fedderly, indirectly, is part of that reason, cultivating the Knights’ spread offense that has known many new cousins throughout the state and nation over the past several seasons.

“With the advent of the spread and where the spread has gone, you kind of have to be able to throw multiple fronts these days,” Pomazak said. “The game is even more complicated than it was even four years ago from a defensive standpoint, so you have to be able to throw those multiple fronts, otherwise teams are going to move the ball all over you.”

There typically is no conditional involved when someone associated with St. Charles East athletics tells you, “It’s a great day to be a Saint.”

East boys golf coach John Stock said as much about Monday’s weather-compromised Class 3A Lake Forest Sectional at Lake Bluff, even though he may or may not have spoken with crossed fingers.

“Unless a miracle occurs or something goes afoul [today], we will be the third team headed to the state tournament,” Stock said. “But it’s not official yet until the tournament is finished.”

About 80 percent of golfers had reported scores by the time officials suspended play after two rain delays and a lightning stoppage. Lake Forest led the field with an unofficial team score of 293.

East trailed the Scouts and Barrington after defeating Stevenson for third by virtue of a scorecard playoff.

East’s fifth scorer, Mike Bertke, shot a 79, which was better than his Stevenson counterpart.

Most of the groups that will finish at 9 a.m. today, vying to advance to this weekend’s state meet at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington, are comprised of golfers who competed as individuals.

Rain or shine, East compiled what Stock called “a fine team effort,” with four scores in the 70s: Colin Johnson (75), Daniel Haugen (76), Kyle McWeeney (77) and Gary King (78).

Stock said he “couldn’t be happier and prouder of Kyle McWeeney,” a sectional substitute who was not part of the six-man lineup at last week’s Geneva Regional at Mill Creek.

A Foreign Exchange Student from Germany, Derowski, hasn’t lost a match yet at 2nd singles. She is coachable, has a positive attitude and always wants to do better.

Berango, a junior, rushed for over 200 yards against Genoa-Kingston this year. Some highlights as running back in five games include 8 touchdowns, 12 point conversion, 79 rushes for 547 total yards, and 6 catches for 45 yards.

Dunn, an outside hitter and a captain for the Kaneland Volleyball Team, was All-tournament team this year for the Wheaton-North Tournament and Centennial Tournament.

Dunn is committed to play for Ball State University next year.

In Maddie’s 3rd year on the varsity team she has been a starter all 3 seasons. She is verbally committed to play on scholarship at NCAA I Elon University as a libero and was just named to the all tournament team at the Waubonsie Valley Warrior Blast, in which she led team in digs with 62.

Monica is the 200 and 500 winner against St. Charles East. She was also the 200 Free winner at the Fenwick Invite.

Jordan is a junior standout for the Lady Saints Swim Team. She is the team’s top 200 IM and 100 Backstroke swimmer and was a State Finalist in those two events last year.

Justin starts at tailback and has also started at corner. On offense, Justin has 389 yards rushing for an average of 5.8 yds/carry, caught 6 passes for a 13.83 yards/ catch average and has 12 touchdowns. Defensively, Justin has one interception, 9 tackles and returned KO’s and punts. adno=0283198

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WATSEKA – In only its third year of existence, the Wheaton Academy girls golf program has earned its first berth to the IHSA Class A state meet.

Competing at the Watseka Sectional on Saturday at Shewami Country Club, the Warriors scored a 362, finishing three strokes beHailey hind champion Farmer Bloomington Central Catholic and one shot ahead of third-place Richmond-Burton.

The top three teams advanced to the state meet. The two-day tournament begins Friday at Red Tail Run in Decatur.

“The girls were real excited for about a minute, and

then they realized they could have won the whole sectional, so they got a little mad at that,” Warriors coach Haley Martin laughed.

“They’re very excited to go and experience it and be one of the top teams in the state.”

A pair of Geneva residents led Wheaton Academy.

Junior Hailey Farmer’s 87 was seventh individually, continuing a consistent state series run. Sophomore Lauren Isenhart followed with a season-low 87.

Megan Herring (94) and Meredith Bult (97) were next.

Central finished fourth in Class 2A in 2013 behind senior Matt Weber, who now competes at In-

diana.

“I just really wanted one last opportunity to get down as a team,” Twenhafel said.

“I really feel our team is as strong as the one that got down last year. I really and truly believe this team improved enough to make up the difference for what Weber would be shooting.”

Aurora Central Catholic competed as a team entry, while Kaneland advanced five individuals from regionals to sectionals.

Class 1A Seneca Sectional: At Nettle Creek in Morris, Aurora Christian (325) finished as runner-up to North Shore Country Day (301), and advanced to this weekend’s state meet at Prairie Vista in Bloomington.

Brett Seward paced the Eagles with a 76, and was followed by Devin Johnson (80), Nick Geen (82) and Kollin Schalhamer (87).

Geneva sweeps No. 1 through No. 3 singles, wins conference

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BARTLETT – Geneva’s top three girls tennis singles players – Kirby Einck, Grace Krueger and Elizabeth Prendergast – have lost four matches combined the whole season.

None of those defeats came this weekend as the Vikings won the Upstate Eight Conference River tournament Saturday to cement their overall conference championship.

Einck has lost twice on the year, both times to Naperville Central’s Tiffany Chen, the defending IHSA state champion.

Players locally have had much less luck with Einck, including Elgin’s Dahlia Keonavingsa, a 6-0, 6-1 victim of Einck’s in the championship match.

Einck said she was in top form Friday and Saturday in her trio of victories.

“I think I played my best tennis of the whole season, which is good leading up to sectionals and hopefully state,” Einck said. “I played really consistent, made all my

shots, so I feel good about this tournament.”

In the No. 3 singles final between Prendergast and St. Charles East’s Haley Jeanes, Prendergast needed to overcome a second-set deficit to prevail, 6-1, 7-5.

“The second one was really tight because I was down 3-5,” Prendergast said. “I won it, 7-5. I just sort of made her run more so she’d get more tired than I would.”

It was the season finale for Prendergast because No. 3 singles players aren’t slotted into the sectionals draw.

Geneva (78 points) comfort-

ably maintained its advantage going into the weekend, finishing 11 points ahead of conference runner-up Batavia.

St. Charles East (64) and St. Charles North (53) made for an all Tri-Cities top four.

While Geneva was 3 for 3 in netting singles titles, coach Maureen Weiler also was proud of the Vikings’ doubles output.

“All our doubles, they placed, and that’s what we needed for them to do,” Weiler said. “All our doubles teams are brand new this year … and every position either won second place or third place, and

that’s enough of a score. It’s the depth of the team that wins conference. That’s what was able to come through for us.”

The No. 1 doubles final between Batavia’s Sydney Unterberg and Julianne Robinson and St. Charles North’s Brittany Rohrsen and Morgan Rerko was hotly contested, with Unterberg and Robinson rallying for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The Bulldogs duo avenged a regular-season loss to the North Stars, and a rematch this week at sectionals is a possibility.

Robinson, a sophomore, said she and Unterberg, a se-

nior, kept their calm after the first-set loss.

North’s Lianne Anderson and Emma Spellman won the No. 2 doubles final over Geneva’s Madi Corda and Maddie Krafcisin.

East’s Sonia Ost and Jenna Patzner won at No. 3 doubles and teammates Grace Esler and Allison Smith won at 4 doubles as both Saints tandems maintained their perfect conference records.

Singles competition took place at Larkin while Bartlett High School played host to doubles and the awards ceremony.

People suffering from migraines are often misdiagnosed Dear Doctor K: I’m a woman in my 30s who has suffered from sinus headaches for years. Allergy medications haven’t helped. What else can I try?

Dear Reader: Seasonal allergies can cause sinus congestion, sneezing and a runny nose. But when you experience pain and pressure in your head, it may be time to consider other causes. That’s because sinus problems do not usually cause headaches. At least, they don’t cause what most people refer to when they use the term “headache.” Most people with sinus congestion refer to “head congestion,” not headache.

I spoke to my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. William Kormos. He said that if you’re regularly experiencing headaches with nasal congestion, you may have migraine headaches. That’s because migraines can cause sinus pressure and clear discharge, just as they can cause the eyes to get red and teary.

People with migraine headaches are often misdiagnosed with sinus problems. That may be because many people don’t associate sinus pain and pressure with migraine headaches. In fact, more than 80 percent of migraine sufferers report sinus pain and

To add to the confusion, weather changes are common migraine triggers. So your migraines might follow a pattern you associate with – and mistake for – seasonal allergies.

A doctor should be able to diagnose the type of headaches you are experiencing. He or she will make the diagnosis based on an accurate, detailed description of your symptoms. For example, nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light or sound are clues that your pain is related to migraines.

Migraine headaches should be treated as soon as symptoms begin, as any delay can make the headache harder to treat. The mainstay of migraine treatment is a group of drugs called triptans.

Another crucial part of migraine management is prevention. Certain activities, foods and other factors can trigger migraines. Identifying and avoiding your headache triggers may help reduce how often you have mi-

graines and how badly they hurt.

Common triggers include: • Caffeine (either too much or less than usual); • Certain foods and drinks, including those that contain tyramine (aged cheeses and meats, fermented drinks); sulfites (preserved foods, wines); and monosodium glutamate (MSG); • Stress, or (more often) relaxing following a stressful day; • Hormone levels (which may be affected by menstrual cycles or hormone-containing medication); • Lack of sleep; • Travel; • Changes in weather or altitude; • Overuse of pain medications.

Also ask your doctor about preventive medications. These are prescription drugs taken every day to reduce the number and the severity of migraines.

The drugs, also used to treat other conditions, include beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, anti-seizure drugs and drugs used for depression.

Charles Caleb Colton was an eccentric English cleric and author who died in 1832. He said, “Nothing more completely baffles one who is full of trick and duplicity than straightforward and simple integrity in another.”

This week, we are trying not to be baffled by trick one. In this deal, the North-South hands, the contract (three no-trump) and the lead (the spade six) are the same as yesterday’s. What should declarer do?

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade (given the lead), three hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. The ninth winner will come from clubs. Is there any danger?

Yes, if a defender gets on lead with the club queen, perhaps East-West will then cash too many spade tricks.

As we saw yesterday, declarer must start by playing dummy’s spade king, the honor from the shorter side first. Yesterday, the king held the trick, but not today – East wins with his ace and returns the spade nine. How should South proceed?

If the spades are 4-4, there is no danger, but if West has five or six spades, the contract is at risk. First, declarer must duck the second trick and take the third with his spade queen. Then the job is to try to keep West off the lead, the defender with the spade winners. This means that the club finesse is a red herring.

South must cash his two top clubs. Here, the queen drops and the contract is home with an overtrick. But if the club queen does not appear, declarer plays a third round and hopes that East wins the trick.
