Driver in serious condition Monday after DuKane ABATE motorcycle crash Officials: A passenger was sent by ambulance to Delnor Hospital

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – A Warrenville motorcycle rider remained in serious condition Monday afternoon following a Sunday afternoon crash that injured him and his passenger during a DuKane ABATE motorcycle parade, officials said.

Curtis Dalton, 46, of Warrenville, was listed in serious condition as of 4:30 p.m.

Monday, an Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital spokesman said. He previously was listed in critical condition at 7 p.m. Sunday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Emergency crews were dispatched about 12:46 p.m.

Sunday to a report of a crash with injuries near the intersection of Main Street and Green Road in Blackberry Township, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

A 2000 Yamaha motorcy-

cle driven by Dalton crashed during the event, according to the release. He and his passenger, Sara Nickence, 43, of Aurora, suffered severe injuries from the crash, the release stated.

Nickence was taken by Batavia paramedics to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Elburn Fire Lt. Greg Algrim said.

A Delnor Hospital spokesman did not return phone messages left Sunday and Monday seeking Nickence’s condition report.

“It appears that [Dalton] swerved to avoid a helmet that fell off another motorcycle that was also involved in the ride,” Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler stated in a news release.

Dalton was airlifted by a Superior helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, according to the release.

Gengler wrote in the release he did not have any

confirmed information on Dalton’s or Nickence’s use of helmets. Algrim also said he did not know whether the two were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

The motorcycle parade was part of motorcycle safety and rights organization DuKane ABATE’s 29th annual Toy and Food Run. The parade began in Elburn, heading south on Route 47 to Main Street, then was heading east

toward the Batavia VFW, at 645 River Road in Batavia.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner was scheduled to ride in Sunday’s motorcycle parade.

Pictures posted online show Rauner taking photos Sunday morning with riders in Elburn before the start of the parade. “[The parade] continued on after everybody was transported and the scene was cleared,” Algrim said.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A male driver involved in a two-vehicle crash Sunday at Fabyan Parkway and Route 31 has died, police reported Monday afternoon.

The man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family members, was the driver of a small red car in the crash.

The Batavia Police and Fire departments were dispatched at 7:20 p.m. Sunday to the incident, according to a Batavia Fire Department news release.

The driver, who was a Kane County resident, was extricated and taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva after the crash, Batavia Police Sgt. Shawn Mazza said on Monday.

The female passenger of the driver’s car also is a Kane County resident, Mazza said. The woman’s exact condition was unknown Monday afternoon, he said, but she still was receiving treatment at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

The woman was ejected from her seat at the time of the crash, the release stated.

She was treated by medics at the scene, then flown by a Superior helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital, according to the release.

The driver of the other, larger vehicle was treated and released at the scene, according to the fire department.

Mazza said Monday afternoon he was not certain whether citations would be issued in connection to the Sunday incident.

“The crash is under investigation,” Mazza said.

If anyone witnessed the Sunday crash and hasn’t already spoken about it with Batavia police, they are asked to call 630-454-2500 to share any information about the incident, Mazza said.

Traffic in the area of Fabyan Parkway and Route 31 was delayed or rerouted following the crash. Batavia fire crews cleared the last unit at 8:17 p.m. Sunday from the scene with no further actions taken, according to the release.

A total of 18 fire personnel were at the scene of the crash, the release stated.

The Geneva and Fermilab fire departments assisted with the extrication and the helicopter landing zone, which was set up on the northwest corner of Fabyan and Route 31 near the Campana building, Mazza said.

The Sunday night crash was at least the second time in a seven-hour period that day where a Superior helicopter touched down in Kane County to take someone to a hospital. The first incident happened early Sunday afternoon and involved a motorcycle rider injured during a DuKane ABATE ride.

ST. CHARLES – The weekend’s robbery of a jewelry store on the city’s far east side fits a “pattern of crime” seen throughout the Midwest, St. Charles Police Cmdr. Jerry Gatlin said.

“We’re trying to compare notes with other agencies who have had similar robberies,” he said, describing it as a “very active investigation at this point.”

Officers responded to Jared, 3691 E. Main St., St. Charles, about 8:45 p.m. Saturday after three men smashed a display case with hammers and took jewelry from the case, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

The release indicated a fourth person stayed at the front door before the group fled.

“They were in and out in what’s estimated to be about a minute,” Gatlin said. “They were very quick.”

Other than the hammers, no weapons were implied or displayed, he said, adding there were “no threats whatsoever.”

Multiple Jared stores have experienced similar robberies this year, Gatlin said. In addition to shops in Illinois, he said, offenders have targeted locations in Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Kentucky.

Because of this, store personnel can anticipate the crimes and usher employees and customers to safety, Gatlin said.

He said those in the St. Charles store – five employees and two customers – were ushered to a back corner during the incident, thus eliminating direct conflict.

The offenders were described as three black men wearing dark hooded sweatshirts, according to the release.

It stated they might have fled to a light blue, older model Dodge Caravan parked behind the business.

The vehicle – which has not been recovered – matches the

description of a vehicle stolen in Batavia within an hour of the robbery, Gatlin said. The Illinois license plate number is 878 7642, according to the release.

Officers are waiting for the store to confirm how much was stolen, Gatlin said, describing it as a “considerable amount.”

This was the second robbery of an east side business within a month. On Sept. 14, an armed robbery happened at the Veri-

zon store at 2700 E. Main St. Police have said two men took several phones at gunpoint.

COVER STORY ‘THE CENTER OF WHAT WE DO’ Geneva Christian School serves students in preschool through fourth grade

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Tatiana Anderson didn’t want Geneva to be without a Christian school after the closure of Faith Christian Academy earlier this year. That school closed because of a looming deficit and declining enrollment.

Anderson’s husband is on the board for the new Geneva Christian School, which recently opened its doors following the closure of Faith Christian Academy, which had served students in second through eighth grades.

Geneva Christian School serves students in preschool through fourth grade and is an outgrowth of Faith Christian Beginner School, which also closed and had served children age 3 through first grade.

Geneva Christian School is in the space it rents at Faith Lutheran Church, at 1745 Kaneville Road, which previously housed Faith Christian Academy and Faith Christian Beginner School.

“My husband and I felt very passionate about having a Christian school in Geneva after Faith Christian Academy closed,” Anderson said.

The couple had children enrolled in Faith Christian Beginner School and had hoped they would go on to Faith Christian Academy before it closed, she said. But she has hopes Geneva Christian School will meet the needs of area families, including her own.

Those parents who enroll their students at the new school will find plenty of experienced teachers, she said.

They also will find small class sizes that allow for one-on-one instruction.

“Most of the teachers who teach here have been at the school [Faith Christian Academy or Faith Christian Beginner School] many years or have been educators all their

She is an avid reader, and they have been able to nurture that. They have been able to provide her with more books tailored to her.”

Geneva Christian School has established itself as a nonprofit organization, and plans are to have fundraising activities for the new school to keep it financially sound, Anderson said.

“We will be reaching out to

prospective donors, too,” she said.

The school started with an enrollment of about 66 students, with class sizes averaging 10 students a class, said Geneva Christian School Director Sherry Anast. She

established Faith Christian Beginner School in 1979.

Because classes are small, teachers can offer more individual attention, she said.

At the same time, Anast said the school is looking to grow.

“We can handle 100 students, plus preschoolers,” she said.

In addition, the school hopes to add a grade every year, such as fifth grade next year, Anast said.

Geneva Christian School is carrying on Faith Christian Beginner School’s educational philosophy of providing education from a Christian perspective. Anast noted the majority of the school’s books are from a Christian publisher.

“God is the center of what we do,” Anast said. “God is not an add-on. We believe God is a center of all life, and school is just a part of that. That’s what Christian education is all about, keeping it all together.”

Leaders hear vision for Pheasant Run

Plane makes emergency landing at Fermilab

Meeting in committee, St. Charles aldermen Monday heard a concept plan that would maintain the 22-acre resort area but would redevelop the remaining land with interdependent uses that complement one another.

The resort would be sandwiched between a 16-acre

space devoted to retail – grocery stores and restaurants were mentioned as possibilities – and a 7-acre plot for retail and office uses.

The 104 acres south of the resort would feature open space and residences, perhaps some for senior citizens.

Aldermen generally supported the idea, although some had concerns about future requests for financial support.

“I’d like to see this move forward,” 4th Ward alderman Jo Krieger said.

David Bird, executive di-

rector of the DuPage Airport Authority, opposed the residential component, saying there cannot be a “worse use” for the property.

He cited concerns about safety and noise, which would affect residents “every single day,” he said, predicting the city and airport would get a “constant barrage of complaints.”

And, he said, “we are only going to get busier.”

First Ward alderman Dan Stellato noted the airport had two years to buy the Pheasant

Run property when it was in foreclosure.

Third Ward alderman Todd Bancroft described the safety and noise concerns as “false flags.” Safety would be a concern for whatever goes on that site, he said, and – from his experience selling condominiums – the noise won’t deter some home buyers.

Stellato said other uses for the 104 acres, including industrial and retail, wouldn’t work.

“What in the world can you build on the site other than residential?” he asked.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen Monday recommended approval of a nearly $700,000 contract to CDM Smith for design of its wastewater plant improvements.

The improvements are necessary in order to meet required phosphorus discharge limits to the Fox River, officials said. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit for the Geneva plan requires it to meet the limit of 1.0 milligram per liter annual phosphorus limit by July 2019.

A detailed design of the improvements is expected to take until September 2016 to complete before construction can begin so the city can meet the deadline, officials said.

CDM Smith also did the facility plan update on the city’s wastewater treatment, officials said.

Public Works Director Richard Babica said the project is the result of ongoing work by staff for the past 18 months.

Second Ward Alderman Richard Marks objected to a contract of this size being recommended without competitive bidding.

“I just have to say a $700,000 no-bid contract makes me very

uncomfortable,” Marks said.

“I think something this large should go out to bid. I know they [CDM Smith] did the first part of the study, but I can’t vote for a $700,000 contract without some type of bidding.”

Babica agreed the contract was “exceptionally large,” but the hours estimated to complete the work is more than 4,800 hours.

“Which is more than the equivalent of two full-time

employees for a year of doing nothing else but work on this project,” Babica said. “CDM Smith has been active with the city. There is no doubt we could have taken that information and put it back out to bid, it will delay the project substantially.”

The overall budget for constructing the upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant is more than $8 million, Babica said.

CULTIVATE NEW POSSIBILITIES

“Staff feels that CDM Smith is a logical choice to continue down this path,” Babica said.

“CDM Smith has been well versed with this project from the basic design. This is a good value ... it’s going to be money well spent.”

The Committee of the Whole vote was 6-1 with Marks casting the lone “no” vote and three aldermen absent. The city council will take final action on the recommendation.

BATAVIA – A small plane safely made an emergency landing Sunday afternoon on Fermilab property, Fermilab spokesman Andre Salles confirmed in an email Monday.

The plane landed about 4:25 p.m. Sunday in a field near Wilson Street east of Kirk Road, according to Salles.

The plane’s pilot had taken off from DuPage Airport in West Chicago, began to experience engine trouble and needed to land, Salles confirmed.

The pilot, who was the only occupant of the plane, was able to land and was uninjured.

Salles in a second email described the incident as minor. Federal Aviation Administration officials visited Fermilab property after the landing and said there would be no investigation, Salles wrote.

Girl reports suspicious motorist Monday in Batavia KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia Police Department is encouraging parents to speak with their children about the importance of reporting situations involving suspicious people after an incident happened Monday.

According to a news release, police responded to the 1400 block of Main Street in Batavia at 1:16 p.m. to meet a girl who was approached by a man in a vehicle.

The man was driving a

tan four-door car, possibly an SUV, and reportedly shouted for the girl to approach his vehicle.

The girl, who was walking in the 1400 to 1500 block of Main Street, didn’t recognize the man and immediately ran away as the vehicle left west on Main Street, according to the release.

The man was described as 30 years old and Hispanic with short, dark, spiked hair and wearing an orange or red shirt, police reported.

“The Batavia Police Department encourages par-

ents and guardians to speak with their children about the importance of immediately calling 911 or speaking with a trusted adult when confronted with situations involving suspicious persons,” the release stated.

OBITUARIES CHARLES E. BROWN Born: April 2, 1931 Died: Oct. 10, 2015

Charles E. Brown was born April 2, 1931, and departed Oct. 10, 2015. He was born, raised and lived in St. Charles, Illinois except during the years 1949–1957 when he attended the University of Colorado and served in the U.S. Army.

After completing his B.S. Pharmacy in 1957, Charles returned to St. Charles and worked as a pharmacist for Klick and Worthley Drug. Eventually he came to own that business. Married, Oct. 16, 1954, to Diane Oddsen, the couple’s wedding was the first to be held in the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church. Charles was an active member of that church and for many years sang in the church choir. After closing Klick and Worthley Drug in 1992, Charles joined a local bank that, after several acquisitions, is now Fifth Third Bank where he was a branch manager.

He was active in many community organizations throughout the years including being president of

the Davis School PTO, a member of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, St. Charles History Museum/Heritage Center and various city committees. He was even instrumental in starting the city’s main street lighted Christmas tree decoration tradition. His many contributions were recognized in 2002 when he received the Charlemagne award. He was also very active in Boy Scouts of America as a youth and later adult. An Eagle Scout, Charles was an involved scout leader, completed the well regarded Wood Badge leadership development program, received the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service to the local BSA council as well as the Burton award. His interests were varied and at times included gardening, long distance bicycling and model

boat building.

He is survived by his son, David C. Brown (Lisa); and daughter, Darcy D. Brown both of St. Charles, Illinois, and four granddaughters, Lauren Fulcher of Los Altos, California, Taylor M. Brown of Campbell, California, Kirsten E. Brown of Boulder, Colorado and Makena Ringhofer of St. Charles, Illinois.

He is also survived by a great granddaughter, Payton Fulcher of Los Altos, California; his sister, Ianthabelle Kastoll; a niece, Karen Rae and nephew, Craig Kastoll of Lake Havasu, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane P. Brown; and his Parents.

MARY L. JUODIS Mary Louise (Cooper) Juodis, age 92, formerly of St. Charles, passed away Oct. 11, 2015. She was born to Frank and Louise Cooper in Peoria, IL. She is survived by her five children, Phyllis (Robert) Cronsell, Tony (Maureen) Juodis, Marianne (Paul) Swenson, Frank (Judy) Juodis, and Theresa Juodis.

She is a graduate of St. Charles High School. She was a long time employee for Attorney Robert Gorecki, and was previously employed by the National Bank of St. Charles. She then retired to Huntley, Illinois.

SUGAR GROVE TOWNSHIP – For the past five years, Tony Sabos and Dave Spano have taught people how to fly airplanes through their company, SimplyFly LLC, based at the Aurora Municipal Airport near Sugar Grove.

Now they want people to build a plane – not anything like a jumbo jet – but a sport plane called a Van’s RV-12 Aircraft, a small and light two-seat, all-metal, sport airplane with removable wings. The wing span and length from nose to tail is 23 feet, Sabos said.

October is one of my favorite months. It may be the cooler weather, the beautiful colors fall produces, the chance to pull out forgotten sweaters or the fact the festive holiday season is quickly approaching.

Here at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, the Christmas Walk and House Tour already have us in holiday mode. It’s just everyday people [with] no special skills, no special background, and it does not cost them anything.”

Sabos said he saw first-hand how much fun people were having.

“It tends to inspire people that they could be a part of something they didn’t think was possible – that they can build an airplane,” Sabos said.

“We – the other owner Dave and

I – talked about it and thought it would be great to do another one out here and continue on the success that we’ve gotten a little glimpse of.”

The plane-building operation in Sugar Grove also would be twice a month in four-hour build sessions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sabos said.

Once the money is raised to buy the kit, the project will begin in January. It will take 2,000 hours and about 18 months to build a completed airplane, Sabos said.

As to where the plane will go once it’s built, Sabos said they have some options, such as operating it at the Experimental

Aircraft Association’s Young Eagle events. But it would be hangared at Sugar Grove, he said.

Prizes will be awarded to those who donate during the Kickstarter campaign, he said, including a T-shirt, baseball cap, pulling the first rivet or starting the engine, or having a flight. Volunteering to build it is open to anyone, he said.

“My whole concept is to include everyone,” Sabos said.

“Whether you’re 4 or 87, if you have the desire to be around aviation – let’s share that. Anybody who is willing to drive out here on the build days is welcome to come work on the airplane.”

Odds favor even a wounded Clinton to win

By ALBERT HUNT BLOOMBERG NEWS If you had asked any oddsmaker in January to pick the most likely next U.S. president, Hillary Clinton would have been the overwhelming choice.

Since then, the former secretary of state has had a dreadful year, rivaled in political misery only by Jeb Bush, Rand Paul and a few other Republican contenders who had to drop out.

Nonetheless, if you ask those oddsmakers the same question today, before the first Democratic presidential debate tonight, the answer still would be Clinton.

This time, however, that assessment wouldn’t reflect her strength, but rather the lack of a strong alternative at this stage.

Even Democrats worried about her general election prospects – a growing population – dismiss the possibility of her rival Bernie Sanders winning the nomination.

And they are skeptical that Vice President Joe Biden will run or, if he did jump in, that he would win. The Republicans are in such chaos that a pathway to victory appears elusive.

Yet looking at Clinton’s problems, and some of her less-often-cited promise, suggests how on the mark those odds may be.

Her cavalier and clumsy reaction to the controversy over the use of her private email system as secretary of state is a case study in arrogance and poor political instincts.

There probably isn’t a smoking gun and the House Republicans’ Benghazi investigative committee, before which she will testify next week, has been discredited as a partisan assault.

Yet, she has taken a hit in the polls; voters don’t like revisiting the trials and tribulations of Clintonland.

about tactics – Hillary will offer a softer image – or her electoral firewalls.

Democratic professionals say that, in contrast to her last presidential campaign, she has strong leadership with John Podesta as chief executive and Robby Mook as campaign manager or chief operating officer. Privately, however, there is concern that crisis management sometimes comes down to a small coterie of personal intimates, her daughter, Chelsea, and Huma Abedin, a longtime aide and surrogate daughter.

Still, there also are encouraging signs for her supporters. After stiffing the media for the first part of her campaign, Clinton has done well in a series of recent interviews. She hates the press but does better when she engages.

No campaign has offered more substance, even if it was overshadowed by the email contretemps.

To be sure, some of this is politically calculated: Her biggest threat would be losing the first few nominating contests to Sanders, so her campaign is determined to protect the left flank.

Her only really egregious act of pandering was her announcement last week that she opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the trade agreement involving the U.S. and 11 countries, which will encompass 40 percent of the global economy. She long supported such a pact; her stated rationale for opposing it was specious and added to questions about her credibility or trustworthiness.

The two big tests she faces over the next 10 days – the debate and the Benghazi hearings – are opportunities to reaffirm the current odds and overcome much of this year’s self-inflicted damage.

Tax increment financing districts – or TIFs – are financial mechanisms to provide funding for assistance in redeveloping depressed areas within a community.

These districts must meet certain criteria to be eligible for the financing. The municipality can issue bonds that are not directly repaid by the taxpayers of the city but from the property taxes collected within the district.

All assessed property values within the TIF are frozen for 23 years, with the perceived notion that – with the financing from the TIF funds – the property assessments will increase.

All governmental agencies that rely on revenue from property taxes will lose a portion of those funds because the TIF diverts those new funds.

The city of Batavia has two active TIFs. The first is called the riverfront TIF and was established in 1989.

The second TIF is the downtown development TIF. The redevelopment of

the two TIFs includes engineering expenses, the streetscape projects, wider sidewalks, the parking garage, repairing both public and private property and improving the streets and sanitation.

The TIFs have provided cosmetic improvements but have not added to the atmosphere of downtown Batavia. It seems the first TIF should have expired in 2012, but it still is active, which implies the TIF is a failure or the city needs to issue more bonds for the riverfront TIF. Now the city of Batavia is proposing another TIF in a small industrial area called West Town. The assessed property value is about $3.6 million, and the city wants to issue about $20 million in bonds. This area

has small businesses, an abandoned service station, some manufacturing and warehouses, and residential areas. The Batavia School District recently rented a warehouse with option to buy in this exact district.

Why would the school district invest taxpayer money in a depressed area?

Industrial districts do not increase in value as quickly as commercial/retail and residential property. With school, park and library districts not receiving their full potential share of property taxes for 23 years, these governmental agencies should deny the city of Batavia and its West Town TIF. Freshman duo leads Geneva boys golf to state tournament for first time in 26 years

WEST CHICAGO – It had been quite a while since a Geneva boys golf team punched its ticket to the IHSA state tournament. In fact, it had only happened once in school history.

That was before Monday’s Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional at St. Andrews Golf Club. The freshmen were at it again, as Jack McDonald shot a 72, with Upstate Eight Conference River Division Player of the Year Tyler Isenhart right behind with a 73, to send Geneva boys golf to the state tournament for the first time since 1989.

Geneva coach Eric Hatczel had seen the two youngsters help carry the Vikings during the regular season, and even to a school-record 292 round at last week’s Larkin Regional, but to lead the program to its first state bid in 26 years came off as impressive.

“It’s phenomenal. I mean, what a wonderful feeling,” Hatczel said. “Jack and Tyler have been so consistent for us this whole year, and to be freshman is great. I also think it’s nice to have kids that young because with this being such an adrenaline rush, they are almost immune to the pressure. It’s great.”

Geneva had a team goal coming into Monday of shooting under 300, and while the Vikings tallied that exact score, with Andrew Abel (76) and JT Kruzich (79) rounding out the scoring, it didn’t matter as Geneva finished third, which meant the entire team will have one more weekend together The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington starting this Friday.

Coming into a sectional as a freshman brought some pressure for McDonald, whether he wanted to admit it or not. Almost finishing as the medalist,

“I mean, I started with five birdies on the front nine, so that kind of calmed me down,” McDonald said. “(Coach) was out there and telling us some of the scores, so I knew that we had a chance to do it. But bottom line is that we are going to state and that’s really all we wanted to do and all that matters.”

St. Andrews also hosted the UEC Tournament, so many Geneva golfers, as well as those from the other Tri-Cities schools, were used to playing there. As Monday’s final groups came in, the wind was beginning to pick up, but fortunately for the Vikings, McDon-

ald, Isenhart and company had all but cemented their spot for next weekend.

Several other schools fell victim to what many coaches and players joked as a miniature state tournament at this sectional.

Neuqua Valley’s 296 took home the title, while threetime defending state champion Hinsdale Central finished second with a 299.

St. Charles East’s Danny Buetow and Marmion’s Nick Huggins were in a group of five golfers that shot a 4-over 76 and more golf was required to fill the remaining three spots for qualifying individuals.

Both Buetow and Huggins, who went to state as a sophomore last year, made par on the first playoff hole, hole No. 1, while the other three bo-

geyed, meaning both qualified for state.

With sectionals already providing the pressure of a golfer’s potential last round of the season, Buetow said he wasn’t going to let the playoff hole be the last one he’d shoot this fall.

“I just kept telling myself that I was going to do it and go to state,” Buetow said. “It was definitely nerve-racking a little bit, but I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I didn’t make it. It means the world to me and I can’t wait for next weekend.”

Huggins will be accompanied by Cadets coach Doug Roberts, who knew his team had an outside shot to make state as a team, but with the loaded field, Roberts knew Marmion would have to have one of its better rounds of the season.

A 317, two strokes ahead of East, Marmion was not quite enough to catch the likes of Geneva.

“We knew it was possible, but we needed some guys to shoot great rounds and needed some help as well,” Roberts said. “We knew schools like Geneva were playing really well, and Neuqua and Hinsdale are always very strong, so it was tough. We’re definitely happy to have Nick Huggins go to state to represent us and, even though he wishes some of the seniors could be there with him, he’s happy to get this chance again.”

St. Charles North and Batavia did not qualify as teams for Monday’s sectional, but the individuals who advanced did not advance to state.

Furtney lifts North Stars to state

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com LEMONT – St. Charles North freshman girls golfer Megan Furtney confessed that “my memory is really bad,” so it took her a moment for her to pinpoint her whereabouts on Columbus Day 2014.

The then-Haines Middle School eighth grader recalls using her day off from school to practice her game.

Hmm. You don’t say.

Fueled by an inner confidence that has buoyed her all season, Furtney shot a 3-under-par 69 at Monday’s Class AA Oak Park-River Forest Sectional at Cog Hill No. 1, taking medalist honors by five strokes.

More importantly to Furtney, the score helped North to the first team sectional title in school history, a 311 that vaulted the North Stars to this weekend’s state tournament at Hickory Point Golf Club in Forsyth.

“It’s been a great experience, really,” Furtney said.

“Just the whole team aspect, I just love it. It’s something I absolutely enjoy.”

North, which finished 11th among 12 teams at state in 2014, topped runner-up Wheaton Warrenville South (320) and third-place St. Charles East (344), who also earned team entries to state Monday.

“It’s been a great experience, really. Just the whole team aspect, I just love it. It’s something I absolutely enjoy.”

Megan Furtney St. Charles North golfer “I knew we had a pretty good team because we only lost one (dual) all season,” Saints junior Rose Bundy said. “Our 18-hole wasn’t really showing it for low scores.

But today we just all were really close together, and when you do that, you advance sometimes.”

Bundy (83) trailed sophomore Nicole Jordan (82) for the Saints’ top score, with Kacie Gaffney (89) and Riley Sullivan (90) next.

Jordan, who represented East at state last fall, became the second member of her family to punch a ticket from Cog Hill since 2011. That’s when her older sister, Paige, a one-time women’s golfer at Bradley, qualified.

“Yeah, it’s exciting,” Nicole Jordan said. “I had a chance to shoot what she shot, but she beat me by a couple strokes.”

icle-area golfers advanced as individuals, led by Batavia sophomore Madi McCoy (83), who smiled upon admitting she hadn’t heard of Hickory Point until this year.

“Honestly, it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” McCoy said.

“But it feels really good.”

A pair of seniors also are Forsyth-bound. Burlington Central’s Josie Kurosky (85) will make a return trip downstate, while Geneva’s Natalie Saeger (87) just snuck ahead of the individual cut.

“It’s great to go back,” Kurosky said. “I’m relieved that my score was good enough, because I played very bad.”

Saeger shed tears of joy once the final scores were scrawled onto the scoreboard and she realized she had advanced.

“She’s excited about it,” Vikings coach Doug Ross said. “We’re very happy for her. Team captain and everything, you know. Senior. It was nice.”

Groups navigated a snag of at least 30 minutes after the starter at hole No. 10 mistakenly sent a handful of groups off from the wrong tee box to start the day.

The gaffe necessitated a de facto do-over, but if there was a silver lining, it was the eventually picturesque weather that included sun,

slight wind and highs in the mid-70s by the time the round concluded. The day started with cool temperatures and light rain.

Early afternoon recreational golfers encountering the slow-down news seemed to take it with a little less frustration. One alternative was playing Cog Hill’s famed Dubsdread course – albeit an aerated version – at a discounted rate of $100.

Had budgets and daylight not been an object, you wondered if the North Stars might have stuck around. It’s been perpetually sunny for the program this season, and remained so Monday as juniors Gianna Furrie (79) and Kate Lillie (81) followed Furtney, with freshman Emma Hayes (82) next.

After shaving 35 strokes from its 2014 regional score, North was 20 shots better than its output at last fall’s soggy Conant Sectional at Fox Run in Elk Grove Village.

“Me and Kate, with the incoming freshmen, we kind of knew a little about them, that we’d be a good team,” Furrie said. “And then that first invite, when we shot a 299, that (proved it), pretty much.”

Now, the North Stars have assured themselves of another weekend of memories.

They figure those should last awhile.

“We struggled. I think it’s just indicative of having different players as a result of injuries and we haven’t played together,” East coach Jennie Kull said. “We just have to keep competing and keep getting better.”

AURORA – In Saturday’s championship match of the St. Charles East Mizuno Cup, the Geneva girls volleyball team proved the old adage about being careful what you wish for.

The Vikings got what they desired – the chance to play against 2014 Class 4A state champion Benet – in a contest at the Great Lakes Center.

What they did not plan on was the result. The Redwings topped Geneva in two sets, 26-24, 26-24, to win the tournament.

Benet capitalized on Geneva serving and hitting errors to win.

“We were excited to see Benet,” Geneva assistant coach Jessica Anspach said.

“We wanted to see Benet, but it just didn’t work out.

“We missed a couple of execution points that could’ve put us in a better situation,” added Anspach, who has temporarily taken over while head coach Annie Seitelman takes care of her newborn son.

“Service errors and a couple hitting errors add up against a team like Benet.”

The Vikings (25-3) built an early lead in the first set, with an 8-2 advantage, but the Redwings regrouped and slowly got back in the set.

Geneva led until Benet’s Tiffany Clark knocked down a kill to tie the set at 22. A Grace Loberg spike, one of her 11 kills, tied the set once again, this time at 24. But Benet scored the final two points on Lauren Berta’s kill and a Viking hitting error.

The second set featured 14 ties and lead changes. Geneva took a late 24-23 lead on Ally Barrett’s sixth kill of the set.

But once again, Viking hitting errors returned the lead to Benet for good.

“I think we played as hard as we could and they played as hard as they could,” Loberg said. “It was just unlucky for us.”

Friday’s showdown between visiting Batavia and Geneva at Burgess Field will decide the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title. The unbeaten Vikings (7-0, 4-0 UEC River) seek their first win against the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0) since Week 7 of the 2010 season.

“We’ve definitely been looking forward to it all year,” Batavia senior defensive end Derek Nutley said. “We’ve got a lot of special guys on this team, a lot of guys that really want to win that game.

Every time, that’s one of the games we circle on our schedule. It’s definitely a team that we want to go out there and pound.”

That’s the kind of rhetoric you’d expect from either side of the longstanding rivalry, which first was contested on Nov. 22, 1913, when coach Stanley Hill’s Batavia team topped Geneva, 12-7.

Whether the 2015 edition proves to be that close remains to be seen, but what is known are the shared efforts of the schools’ cheering sections to benefit LivingWell Cancer Resource Center and Fox Valley Food for Health.

During school lunch hours Wednesday and Thursday, Geneva’s Blue Crue and Batavia’s Dog Pound will sell pink Batavia vs. Geneva “Combined for a Cause” T-shirts for $10.

The public can purchase the shirts – available in sizes small, medium, large and extra large – in the Batavia cafeteria from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday or beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at Burgess Field.

Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sales from the 50/50 raffle also will benefit Living Well and Fox Valley Food for Health.

‘Battle tested’ North building off losses

St. Charles North learned a lot from its losses to Geneva and Batavia, in games it came into with high hopes.

In helping North win back-to-back games since those defeats, quarterback Zach Mettetal has his team back on track at the time that it matters most.

With a trip to rival St. Charles East coming up this week and a home game against Elgin to follow, the North Stars like their chances to head into the postseason with a four-game winning streak and momentum at its peak.

“We still believe we can play with anyone out there,” Mettetal said. “We’re battle tested, as (coach Rob Pomazak) likes to say. You don’t ever want to lose games, but we’ve gotten stronger because of it. I think we’re all on the same

Although the North Stars already are playoff eligible, the Saints must win their two remaining games to accomplish that feat.

Lack of scoring continues to hurt BC

Burlington Central football coach Jason Newburger has not gotten off to any sort of start he could have imagined in his first year as the Rockets coach.

Sitting at 0-7 certainly was not where Newburger pictured his team, whose lack of scoring points has been a hardship.

“That plagued us last week in the

first half, and then again in the first half today,” Newburger said after Friday’s 41-7 loss at Burlington Central. “(Richmond-Burton) is a good team, and they got stingy once we got down in the redz one and we didn’t execute again.”

Execution, or lack thereof, has hurt the Rockets more than a couple times.

Senior running back turned quarterback Jason Berango was expected to carry the bulk of the work in the backfield this season, and contributed 19 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown against R-B. But Brad Sorensen also found room, carrying the ball 12 times for 108 yards.

Sorensen knows in order to pick up a win, or have success moving the football, it has to be a group effort.

“We’re trying to come together and be more of a team than just a single person while moving the ball up the field,” Sorensen said. “Whatever clicks for us as a team is what we want to do.”

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University quarterback Drew Hare has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week after posting the most accurate passing day in the history of NIU football Saturday while leading the Huskies to a 59-point offensive explosion versus Ball State.

Hare completed 29-of-32 passes for 363 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions to set the Huskies’ school record for the highest completion percentage in a single game at 90.6 percent.

Krueger, Geneva take title

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North girls tennis coach Sean Masoncup told his team throughout the season that “every match counts,” and did it ever prove to be true.

The North Stars came into last weekend’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament trailing Geneva by four points atop the conference standings. Although the North Stars swept doubles play, Geneva’s Grace Krueger won the No. 1 singles title to help the Vikings hang on by one point over the North Stars to win the team title.

North won the tournament over Geneva, 35-32, but the Vikings’ four point lead proved valuable in winning its second straight conference team title, with 66 points to North’s 65 overall.

Krueger beat Streamwood’s Alaina Kanthaphixay, 6-3, 6-4, to help Geneva just edge out North. Tournament action was split between St. Charles East and North. Although Krueger was Geneva’s only champion, the Vikings scored all-important points in doubles play, with two second-place and two

third-place finishes to hang on to the victory.

“It was one of my goals coming into the season, so it’s a really great feeling,” Krueger said of her conference title. “I just tried hard to work hard throughout the season and it paid off.”

“As a team, we got a lot of points in third- and fourthplace finishes that really matter,” Krueger added. “It just showed that even if they lost a match or weren’t playing to the best of their ability, that they have a short memory and don’t take it to the next match.”

First-year Vikings coach Zach Evans said the girls worked hard all season and took care of business when it mattered most. Evans said a few matches stuck out to the importance of getting points this weekend, but Liz Prendergast’s come from behind win to reach the No. 2 singles final was a big boost for the Vikings.

“It means a lot, but it really had nothing to do with me,” Evans said of the team’s success. “It’s all due to the girls.

We had a lot of depth and it didn’t matter who I rotated in; they found ways to get wins for us. We have a very good team

this season.”

The win provides Krueger and the Vikings a bit of momentum heading into this weekend’s sectionals. But it also provided quite the boost for the North Stars and No.1 doubles pair Morgan Rerko and Emma Spellman.

After earning the No. 1 seed at the tournament, the senior duo earned a bye before taking care of Batavia (6-0, 6-0) and St. Charles East (6-4, 6-1) to earn the conference crown.

“I really think we’re peaking at the right time,” Rerko said. “We’ve come a ways and have really gotten to know how to play alongside each other. The confidence this gives us moving into sectionals is huge.”

“It’s all about playing your best at the right time,” Spellman added. “We feel we’ve gotten a lot better since day one, and we’re excited to keep playing and see how far we’re able to go.”

There still was a bit of disappointment from the North Stars, one point shy of forcing the tie-breaker to come into effect, which would have been most overall champions. The North Stars held that at a 4-1 edge.

GENEVA – Playing before a loud home crowd Saturday at Fox Valley Ice Arena, the Fox Valley Hawks boys hockey team improved to 2-0 on with a 3-2, come-from-behind win over defending ISHL champion Joliet Catholic.

With the Hawks trailing, 2-0, in the first period, they got on the board with a goal from just inside the blue line by Gio Pompilio on an assist from fellow St. Charles East student Morgan York. With less than seven minutes to play in the game, Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North) scored off a face-off play in which Josh Gadow (East) won a important offensive zone face-off.

“We did not come out ready to play this team; we had a little hangover from last week’s 10-1 win, and it showed,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “We can’t think these games will be easy. Hopefully, we learned something from tonight. We did re-group the team after the first period and good teams will bounce back from adversity and it is all part of the learning process for a team.”

Squirrels were popular pets in past centuries. They were kept in special cages that included a running wheel or other type of exercise machine. Many of the cages were shaped like a house or other type of building. And all had an entrance door, removable tray at the bottom to aid in cleaning the cage and a feeding dish. Some even had material formed into a nest in one corner. They were made of tin and wood.

Some paintings of children from the 18th and 19th centuries picture pets that include a squirrel peering through the bars of the cage. Prices for antique and vintage cages range from $200 up to $1,500. Few are bought to house a wild squirrel today. They are displayed as folk art and historic relics. *** Q: I got a Mickey Mouse watch for my sixth birthday in 1949. The dial is rectangular and it has a leatherette strap. “Ingersoll” is on the face and “US Time” is stamped on the back.

Mickey’s hands and shoes are yellow and the numbers are red. The watch doesn’t work. Would it be wise to have it fixed, or would that lower the value?

A: In 1882, two brothers from Michigan started the Ingersoll Watch Co. in New York City. The company made quality watches for about $1 to $1.50, a day’s wages at the time.

Ingersoll declared bankruptcy in 1921 and was bought by the Waterbury Clock Co. which became the IngersollWaterbury Co. In 1933 Ingersoll, in a deal with the Walt Disney Co., made the first watch with Mickey Mouse on the face and three mice chasing each other on a seconds dial. By 1935

more than 2.5 million Mickey Mouse watches had been sold. Production of the watches stopped from 1942 to ‘45 because of World War II. IngersollWaterbury reorganized in 1944 as part of U.S. Time Corp. (later became Timex), but the company continued to make watches under the Ingersoll brand. Mickey Mouse watches were made again in 1946 with a new rectangular case and a more modern image of Mickey. The name “Ingersoll” appeared on the face next to Mickey until 1946, and U.S. Time was stamped on the back, just like your watch. A watch is always worth more if it’s running than if it isn’t. Mickey Mouse watches like yours sell from $30 for not working all the way to $375 for mint condition with the original box. *** Q: I have three bentwood chairs made by Fischel that were commissioned in Czechoslovakia for the first big hotel in New York City. The seats have carved inlay. What’s the value of a Fischel chair?

A: Asahel Curtis (1874-1941) started working as a photographer in his brother’s studio in Seattle in 1895.

Asahel went to Alaska between 1897 and 1899 and took pictures during the Klondike Gold Rush. He had a falling out with his brother and opened his own studio in Seattle in 1911.

President Warren Harding made a trip to Alaska in July 1923 to drive in the golden spike marking the end of the Alaska Railroad. Harding died on Aug. 2 on his way home. We haven’t found any record that he was part of a hunting party while in Alaska. A box of 109 Asahel Curtis glass lantern slides that included scenes in Alaska and Seattle sold recently for $1,547. If the pictures of President Harding on the hunting trip can be authenticated, they could be worth more. The projector is worth $250 to $300 and should stay with the slides. The slides from Alaska could sell for about $15 to $20 each. *** Q: I have some ivory jewelry that I got in the 1970s. My daughter told me I can’t sell it because of the laws prohibiting the sale of elephant ivory.

To some extent, someone who loses a family member to suicide suffers a loss similar to if the person had suffered another type of unexpected or violent death, such as a heart attack, car accident or drowning.

But people who lose a family member to suicide have additional challenges. These may include shame, which is reinforced by society’s attitude about suicide.

They also may struggle with guilt over whether they could have prevented the death, if only they had done something different.

One of the most important things you can do is to offer your support and compassion.

Because suicide carries a stigma, some friends and family may back away, unsure what to do or say.

Your simply being there will help.

Here are some more specific suggestions for supporting survivors of suicide loss: • Normalize the grief.

Encourage your friend to engage in the same rituals she would use to grieve any death. For example, she might hold a memorial service.

Remind her that suicide is a tragic outcome of depression or another mental illness. In that way, it is similar to death by heart attack, which may result from cardiovascular disease.

The stigma of suicide may come from the blame that some attach to the mental illness that leads to suicide. For

They don’t see it as I and many doctors see it, as a physical illness caused by disordered brain chemistry. Influenced by life events, surely, but at root a physical illness like the atherosclerosis that causes a heart attack.

• Ease guilt. It may help to remind your friend that even mental health professionals cannot predict when such a death might occur – not to mention that we have very little control over someone else’s behavior.

Encourage your friend to consider therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and support groups all can help sort through the barrage of emotions she is experiencing.

• Support openness.

Encourage your friend to talk about her son. Let her know you are there to listen to any details about him, and about his death, that she is comfortable sharing.

• Plan ahead. Assist your friend in finding ways to mark (or simply get through) her son’s birthday, family holidays or other milestones.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention recommends against using the verb “commit” when talking about suicide. That’s because this word is often used to connote criminal or sinful behavior. I’ve purposely used phrases such as “die by suicide” to avoid further stigmatizing this type of death.

Most times, when a person shows kindness and respect, those qualities are returned.

Give it a try. Be especially nice to your sister. Bend over backward to be kind and friendly.

This may cause your sister to wonder whether you’re ill, but when she gets over her shock, she’ll be delighted with the new you. What else can she do but be nice in return?

Are you prepared to convert to Catholicism? Is your boyfriend prepared to convert to Judaism? What are the natures of your respective faiths? Do both of you attend services regularly and is doing so a deep and crucial part of your lives?

You and your boyfriend should meet with your rabbi and his priest. Get their input on interfaith marriages. Perhaps one of them could put you in touch with a couple with the same religious backgrounds as you and your boyfriend, and who have a successful, happy marriage.

One last recommendation: Each of you should pray for guidance. Some answers are found only in reverent solitude.

That was quite some claim, but in today’s deal East has a chance to dangle a carrot that might cause a “revolution” between North and South.

First, though, this week we are wondering when declarer should ruff and when he should discard. This is another straightforward example. South is in four hearts. West leads the club jack, and the defenders keep playing the suit. What should declarer do?

Note North’s raise to two hearts.

With a weak hand, tell partner as quickly as possible. Yes, if South is 4-5 in the majors, spades could be the better trump suit.

Then North hopes his partner has enough to bid higher, when South would rebid two spades.

Should declarer discard his inevitable diamond loser at trick three?

Certainly not! That would put his contract on the spade finesse, when he has 10 top tricks: three spades, five hearts and two diamonds.

Well, in theory 10 top tricks. After ruffing at trick three and drawing trumps ending in his hand, South runs the spade nine (the lowest card that can win the trick if the finesse is working). Now an East with steely nerves can dangle a tasty-looking carrot. He ducks smoothly.

Then when South runs the spade queen, East ducks again! If declarer greedily assumes the finesse is winning, he will take a third finesse, but East will produce the king out of his back pocket, and the contract will go down one.

Dear Abby: I’m writing regarding the letter from “She’s Killing Them in Indiana” (July 8) and your response to the writer, whose friend is HIV-positive and doesn’t tell her partners her diagnosis. I am a disease intervention specialist (DIS) in Indiana and work specifically with STDs like HIV. In Indiana there is a duty to warn law that requires anyone who is HIV-positive to inform any past or present sexual or needle-sharing partners of her/his HIV status. At the time of diagnosis, all providers inform the patient of this, and a DIS like me is required to get a signed copy of this law from HIV-positive individuals.

This year there was a large outbreak of HIV in a rural southern area of Indiana. More than 100 new infections occurred within just three short months.

If individuals like this woman do not inform partners, then the risk is high for another outbreak.

The person who wrote you should contact the Indiana State Department of Health’s Recalcitrant Program and inform them of this situation. All information is kept confidential. Counseling could be provided, and then if she continues not informing, legal action could be taken against her. – Melissa Mu-
