coached in two IHSA football state championship games, one as Batavia’s head coach and more recently as the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator.

Neither game plan kept him tossing and turning leading up to kickoff like the Class 6A state semifinal game in 2006.

That was the real pressure cooker. The opponent was Geneva.

“If this puts any perspective on that 2006 semifinal game, our two state title appearances to me, as a coach, were anticlimactic,” Gaspari said. “I didn’t feel pressure in terms of coaching. Nothing compared to that game.”

Batavia and Geneva, two neighboring, leafy suburbs in central Kane County, are not known for making much

of a ruckus. Crime is low, test scores are high and the popular weekend pastime is a stroll along the placid Fox River.

But on select Friday nights in the fall, when the red-clad Batavia Bulldogs and blue-clad Geneva Vikings line ‘em up, the tension thickens on either side of Fabyan Parkway. Usually mild-mannered residents’ pulses race.

DuKane A.B.A.T.E holds annual Toy and Food Run ELBURN – The 28th annual DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run is set for Sunday. The parade will start at Knucklehead’s at North Street and Route 47 in Elburn. Lineup begins at 10 a.m., and the parade will start at 12:30 p.m. It will be a fully escorted ride to the Batavia VFW on Route 25.

Admission to the Toy Run is $10, plus an unwrapped new toy and a nonperishable food item. The all-day event benefits 14 local charities.

Activities include a bike show and live music. A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois is a motorcycle safety and rights organization that protects and fights for the rights of motorcyclists and brings motorcycle safety and awareness to the community.

Woolly bear caterpillar quite the child star GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Note to readers – the following column originally ran in 2008. Some updates have been added.

“Where are they now?”

It’s a phrase that seems custom-made for former child stars – little darlings who sang, danced or acted their way to fame and fortune, only to fade into oblivion the moment a tooth fell out or a pimple popped up.

Remember Buckwheat, of “Little Rascals” fame? Only because of the Internet, and my good friend Google, do I now know Billie “Buckwheat” Thomas left acting to serve in the Army, then worked as a film lab technician before dying of a heart attack in 1980.

Or what about Mikey, from the Life cereal commercial of the 1970s? (“He won’t eat it.

He hates everything.”) If you Google information about the Life cereal kid, you’ll learn that Mikey, a.k.a. John Gilchrist, has led a quiet life as a husband, father and ad executive living in suburban New York.

This where-are-they-now phenomenon, it turns out, is not unique to Hollywood or Madison Avenue. The insect world has its share of child stars, too – little larvae that, like Buckwheat and Mikey, are instantly recognizable as youngsters, only to turn ordinary when adulthood hits.

The antlion comes to mind.

As juveniles, these insects excavate small pits in sand or soft soil, then lie in wait for unsuspecting prey – namely ants – to drop by. Quickly and precisely the young antlion, equipped with long, strong jaws, quickly grabs the unfortunate arthropod and quite literally sucks the life out of it. The whole performance is insect drama at its finest.

But then – just like the moment puberty zapped

Instantly recognizable, woolly bear caterpillars are one of the insect world’s many “child stars.” After pupation these familiar creatures lead quiet lives as Isabella tiger moths.

Beaver Cleaver out of the limelight – pupation takes the antlion off the celebrity insect radar. One month inside a sand-coated cocoon and – poof!

– no more fame, no more glory.

Moreover, many field guides note that the night-flying adult antlion is rarely seen and that its habits are “poorly understood.”

Other insect child stars include the bagworm, often seen nibbling on evergreens from inside its needle-covered pouch; goldenrod gall fly larvae, the small worm-like creatures that make those large lumps on the stems of its

namesake plant; and tent caterpillars and fall webworms, those gregarious, tree-dwelling caterpillars that live communally in conspicuous silken webs.

And then there is the woolly bear caterpillar: the Shirley Temple of insect child stars.

Black and brown and bristly from end to end, the famed woolly bear is cute as a, well, bug.

As if cuteness and widespread recognition weren’t enough, woolly bears have other claims to fame, too, including folklore that gives them weather-predicting skills.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, if the woolly bear’s brown middle band is long and two black end bands are short, then the coming winter will be short and mild. However, if the brown band is short and the black bands long, look out; a long winter is on its way.

Could this be true? Well, another word for folklore is legend, and another word for legend is myth. Alas, the woolly bear is no more capable of predicting weather than a teddy bear. The length of the bands can be a consequence of age (the more brown, the older the caterpillar), growing

conditions and/or genetic variation.

Nonetheless, woolly bears are a cause for celebration in several U.S. towns. Vermilion, Ohio, for example hosted its 42nd annual Woolly Bear Festival in late September; highlights included a parade, Woolly Bear 500 caterpillar race and a Woolly Bear King and Queen costume contest.

And next weekend the little town of Banner Elk, North Carolina, will put on its 37th annual Woolly Worm Festival featuring crafts, food vendors and “woolly worm waces” with competitors vying for a $1,000 first prize and the honor of “predicting” the coming winter’s weather.

What’s really great about woolly bears, though, is you don’t have to travel to enjoy these seasonal stars. In our area, they’re out in force right now, ambling their way across footpaths and roadways.

Because fall is woolly bear season.

These captivating critters have spent the last couple of months doing what caterpillars do best: eating and growing. Unlike some caterpillar species, who must feed on one particular host plant or die

Jack was a member of the Rochelle Golden K Kiwanis Club, Boy Scout Master in Geneva and an umpire for Batavia Youth Baseball in the early 70’s.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a father figure and role model to not only his family but many others.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Robert and Evelyn Brown; two brothers, Murray and Chuck Gardner; brother-in-law,

George; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Nancy; and grandson, Phillip Gardner.

Children’s Choir seeking singers for holiday season

LOCAL BRIEFS Mighty Vike Homecoming Hustle Fun Run is today GENEVA – The first Mighty Vike Homecoming Hustle Fun Run for the Geneva Academic Foundation will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. today. Registration will begin at 8 a.m.

The Fun Run will include a 5K run, a 1 mile run/walk, a Junior Jog (ages 9 and younger) and a Toddler Trot (ages 5 and younger). All races will begin and end at the Geneva High School athletic stadium.

Registrations are underway, and participants may register by visiting www.gafgeneva.org.

Live music for the event will be provided by the local Geneva band North of Center. There will be outdoor games for both kids and adults, and participants are encouraged to attend and run in costume. They will be judged in a Best Costume Contest.

There also will be contests for the School with the Most Runners and the Alumni Class with the Most Runners. There also will be pumpkins and mums on sale the day of the event.

“GAF is excited to host our first annual GAF Mighty Vike Homecoming Hustle Fun Run,” said Laura Zuzuly, chairperson of the Geneva Academic Foundation, in a release. “It is meant to be a community event, and we hope that students, parents, families, teachers, alumni and community members will all participate as runners or walkers. We would like this to become an annual part of the homecoming weekend festivities. There will be coffee and delicious breakfast food available, and tours of the high school can be arranged for alumni groups, as well.”

Coroner seeks $140K more for budget

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County coroner – whose spending has been criticized in recent months – is asking the County Board for a budget adjustment of about $140,000.

Coroner Rob Russell said he expects the increase will carry his office through the end of the year. It will be paid with contingency funds, he said.

The $140,368.87 adjustment includes about $4,184 in salaries and wages; $64,785 in autopsies and consulting; $43,311 in DuPage

County fees; and $7,931 in fuel, according to a resolution presented to the Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Friday.

The committee moved the resolution to the Finance Committee with member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, voting no.

The coroner’s office is undergoing morgue renovations and has outsourced forensic operations to DuPage County since mold was found in Kane County’s facility.

Speaking after the meeting, Russell said the goal is to complete the morgue renovations by Jan. 1. Upgrades

include a new HVAC system and a cooler-freezer combination, he said.

“It is going well,” he said. “[Operations Staff Executive] Don Biggs is doing a great job.”

The work doesn’t solve every issue with the facility, Russell said, but it should serve the office for the next five years, when he hopes it can move into a different building.

Meanwhile, the coroner’s office should soon receive extra scrutiny.

GENEVA – Mixed martial arts-trained instructor Tom Wheeler recently opened a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy in Geneva.

Wheeler, a Geneva native who now lives in North Aurora, plans a grand opening for Olympus Fitness & Jiu-Jitsu, 204 Dearborn Court, Unit 115, Geneva, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 18 with free classes, raffles, specials, demonstrations and food.

Jiu-jitsu was developed in Japan as a means of self-defense without weapons during Samurai times in the 12th to 19th century, using only the strength and weight of an adversary to disable him, Wheeler, 33, said.

“I wanted to bring that martial art to the area,” he said. “It’s the fastest growing sport out there right now. …

Everything on the ground is Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It’s like wrestling … but we are just as comfortable defending ourselves on our backs as on top.”

Brazilian jiu-jitsu developed in the 1930s and 1940s, Wheeler said, founded by brothers Carlos and Helio Gracie through their original teacher, Mitsuyo Esai Maeda, who brought it from Japan when he emigrated to Brazil, he said.

“He refined the art so you can do self-defense against any opponent – male, female, big or small,” Wheeler said. “Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a self-defense system for women and children ... [or] bullying. ... They not only learn self-defense, they get great exercise out of it. It is a big confidence builder for everyone.”

Wheeler is a certified personal trainer and sports conditioning specialist who has been practicing jiu-jitsu since 2004.

For the last seven years, Wheeler owned and operated TW Fitness Inc., which is a personal training company that trains people in their homes and schools.

camps, personal training sessions and preschool gymnastics.

Wheeler’s wife, Sunni, 39, will teach parent-child and preschool gymnastics at the gym.

Now in its 29th year, Scarecrow Fest offers a variety of entertainment for visitors to downtown St. Charles this weekend, including live music, carnival rides, an arts and crafts show, a petting zoo, children’s activities and, of course, scarecrow displays.

Many attendees on Friday took pictures of the displays, including Kim Schuth of North Aurora, who was with her daughter and her daughter’s friend, both 8.

Meanwhile, some display creators, including 16-yearold Amber Benitez, made adjustments to their products.

With help from others, the St. Charles teen used a hammer to better secure a stake holding the banner for the Cheer Alliance display.

Scarecrow Fest spans both sides of the Fox River at such locations as Lincoln Park to the west and the municipal center parking lot to the east – a site Amy Egolf wasn’t sure would be ready in time because of a $1 million renovation project.

“We were worried,” the executive director of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau said, noting organizers postponed printing the 20,000 festival brochures by a week because of the uncertainty.

As the festival approached, Egolf said, she spoke with the construction company and the city’s public works department about the issue, stress-

ing that “this is a big deal.”

If attendees arrived at the festival not knowing where to go, she said, it would generate negative feedback for both the visitors bureau and the city as a whole. So, she said, organizers were pleased that the site was ready.

She also was happy with Friday’s turnout.

“It looks like it’s wall-towall,” Egolf said, looking down West Main Street from the western edge of Lincoln Park toward the river.

She noted that the Blue Goose Market, 300 S. Second St., is hosting an event of its own to correspond with the festival this weekend, Harvest Homecoming. The new event features a fresh market, craft beers, wines and chef pairings. Complimentary valet parking also is available for all Blue Goose shoppers.

Egolf described Harvest Homecoming as a “marvelous way” an established downtown business can take advantage of the crowds that Scarecrow Fest draws. She said she encourages all downtown businesses to do the same.

“We are delighted about Harvest Homecoming,” she said.

Boy Scout troop forms in North Aurora Group is first troop in village in more than 20 years

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The village now has a Boy Scout troop after being without one for more than two decades.

Veterinarian Thomas Brooks, of the Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic in North Aurora, in August announced efforts to start a Boy Scout troop in North Aurora. Troop 104 formed Oct. 3 with six Boy Scouts and four adult leaders, Brooks said.

The new troop will meet at 7 p.m. Sunday nights at Union Congregational Church, 405 State St., North Aurora, which is the chartering organization. The troop is part of the Foxfire District, which serves West and East Aurora school districts.

The village had two active Cub Scout packs, but until now, it has not had a Boy Scout troop since the 1990s, Brooks said. Other troops in the area are helping Troop 104 get started by providing it with camping equipment and has invited the troop to campouts, he said.

Brooks had served as the Scoutmaster of Troop 3 in Aurora, and he is serving as the Scoutmaster of the new troop.

He is joined by Jan Lundsteen, who will be the troop committee chairman as it gets organized. Lundsteen started Troop 46 in Lily Lake.

According to the Boy Scouts’ website, www.scouting.org, a boy is eligible to be a Scout if he is 11 years old, or if he has completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and is at least 10 years old but is not yet 18 years old.

Marklund 5K event to raise money for client services BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Marklund at Mill Creek near Geneva is hosting its second annual Run, Walk and Roll 5K/1Mile event Oct. 26.

The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization, which provides residential and other services for developmentally disabled adults.

Last year, the event had nearly 600 participants, said Marklund Development Coordinator Stephanie Heinz.

“We’re hoping for 800 [participants] this year,” Heinz said.

Just under 300 have registered so far, she said. Those considering participating should register before Friday, to be guaranteed a T-shirt.

The cost to register for the 5K as a run or using a wheelchair is $35. The one-mile walk registration cost is $25.

Adults, children, families and those in assistive devices like wheelchairs, walkers and specialized bicycles are all welcome to participate, Heinz said.

Strollers and wagons are welcome on the one-mile walk/run.

Participants can register online at www.marklund. org/5k and follow instructions to set up individual fundraising pages to raise money to support client care at Marklund.

The walk or run event will start at Marklund, 1S450 Wyatt Drive, Blackberry Township, in Mill Creek, and then follow a course through the subdivision, returning to Marklund where hot food, live music and kids’ activities will follow.

The course is U.S. Track and Field Certified, Heinz said, which means it has been measured and deemed a legitimate course.

Heinz said Marklund’s resident clients will participate with assistance as they are able.

Last year’s event raised $30,000 for Marklund’s programs and services.

Heinz said the fundraising goal this year is $45,000.

“It’s a fun event and is a great way for people to help make everyday life possible for individuals with profound disabilities,” Heinz said.

Marklund serves nearly 200 families with members who have profound disabilities at three sites throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – West DuPage Cabinets and Granite is moving ahead with plans to open a retail showroom in the cityowned Thomle building at 2 E. Wilson St. in downtown Batavia.

Aldermen at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting approved a one-year lease with West DuPage Cabinets’ president Catherine Sanzeri.

Sanzeri said the building is the perfect location for her business.

Plans are to open Dec. 1, she said.

started West DuPage Cabinets and Granite two years ago after being in the custom home business.

The business plans to target single-family homeowners, condominium owners, business owners and single family home builders.

“We have products to fit every budget,” she said.

The city will receive $415 a month in rent – about $5,000 a year – along with an estimated $3,000 a year in retail sales tax revenues.

The store also is responsible for all utility costs. Upon the lease’s expiration, the city has the right to extend the lease for another year on

a month-to-month basis.

Staff recommended approval of the lease. In a memo to aldermen and Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke, Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston said the store would bring additional foot traffic to the city’s downtown and stimulate additional economic activity for the city.

Since 1997, the city has owned the historical Thomle building, which was built in 1876.

The city in the past has rented the space to businesses at a reduced rate to encourage new businesses to move into the downtown. Aiston said he hopes that once the lease expires, Sanzeri would move into a larger space in the city.

Maintaining civility Our elected officials do not need to like each other.

They do need to listen to one another, though, if they are going to fulfill the duties they were elected to perform.

An apparent breakdown in communication manifested itself in embarrassing fashion recently when Campton Hills Village Trustee Al Lenkaitis Jr. filed a police report, alleging that Village President Patsy Smith pushed him out of her office Aug. 14.

Lenkaitis said he was hoping to discuss village business with Smith, who, according to the filed police report, told Lenkaitis she was too busy to talk at the time. She said Lenkaitis refused to leave the office so she walked past him to seek assistance from a police officer.

Naturally, there are two sides to every story, and it is unclear who bears more of the blame for this tiff reaching the level of police involvement. But we hope both Smith and Lenkaitis do some introspection about the roles they played leading up to the quarrel.

Maybe something is in the water in Campton Hills. Another regrettable incident in town last month, in which Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District Board President Jim Gaffney reportedly “charged” toward a homeowner association meeting attendee with whom he was arguing, prompted village police to respond to keep the peace. Gaffney denied touching anyone, saying he was trying to calm down members of the crowd because the meeting “got out of hand.”

Both of these instances are disheartening. They are reminders that maintaining a level of civility is an essential component of successful leadership.

Belligerence and stubbornness are surefire ways to see your message lost in translation.

Smith and Lenkaitis must continue to work together as long as they remain in their roles. While their personal relationship might remain frosty, allowing whatever hard feelings exist to affect their job performances would be shortchanging their constituents.

Possessing or using a fake ID is a serious offense, and with it comes dire consequences.

Many college students who obtain fake IDs do not think of the serious consequences. Their goal may be as simple as getting into bars or purchasing alcohol. Anyone convicted of possessing or using a fraudulent driver’s license or ID card will receive a one-year suspension of his or her driving privileges. In

addition, they face up to one to three years in prison, a mandatory minimum fine of $500 or 50 hours of community service.

The Internet has made obtaining fake IDs easier.

Overseas companies boast of offering fake IDs for a fee. Unfortunately, some students eager to get fraudulent IDs are falling for this illegal practice and, in so doing, are providing personal information to these disreputable companies.

In addition to breaking Illinois law and risking their driving privileges, these students are putting them-

selves at risk for identity theft.

My office is committed to combating the use and manufacture of fake IDs. In 2009, I established the state’s Safe ID Task Force, which is chaired by my office’s inspector general, Jim Burns, former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. The task force works with local, state and federal agencies to combat fake ID use. Some of these agencies include police, the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Illinois driver’s licenses and ID cards contain more than a dozen enhanced security features designed to make them secure and difficult to reproduce.

Secretary of State Police experts travel the state training liquor establishments, law enforcement, banks and other commercial entities on how to spot a fake ID. The fact of the matter is, while the fake may look good, those with a trained eye and inexpensive equipment, such as a black light or a laser pen, can quickly tell the difference.

I urge college students and others who are underage to refrain from obtaining fake IDs. The penalties are too severe and will impact their future in a negative way.

Fifth straight loss sinks Kaneland’s playoff hopes

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris senior quarterback Griffin Sobol gingerly raised his hands for a gritty game of show and tell after Friday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 football game at Kaneland.

“Tell you what, that Kaneland defense, I’m going to be in the most pain I’ll ever be in after a game tomorrow. They came at me,” Sobol said. “I mean, you can see by my knuckles. They’re all bloody.”

For Sobol and the Redskins it was the kind of pain that hurt so good. Morris edged Kaneland, 2621, to keep its postseason hopes flickering, a result that simultaneously ended the Knights’ bid for another postseason.

Kaneland (2-5, 0-4 NI Big 12 East) will not play beyond Week 9 for just the second time in the past 20 seasons, and the first time since 2007 – coach Tom Fedderly’s first season at the helm.

The Knights lost their fifth straight game. Foes have outscored them by just 31 points in that span. Take away a 41-25 loss at Yorkville in Week 4, and the margin grows frustratingly tighter.

“You know, our kids have battled every single game, right down to the last minute,” Fedderly said. “And so I told them I’m really proud of them and their effort.”

Morris (3-4, 1-2) will host Sycamore next week needing the same result it got Friday, then another win in Week 9. The Redskins boast a formidable playoff streak of their own, having not endured consecutive losing seasons since the late 1970s.

More recently, Morris missed the playoffs in 2000 and 2013.

“We knew both teams were in the same position, so we really wanted to come out and stick it to them at the start,” Redskins junior defensive lineman Ryan Niewinski said. “I mean, give props to them. They’re a great team and really made plays at the end.”

The Redskins’ defense forced fumbles on three consecutive Knights possessions and scored a pair of touchdowns en route to building a 12-7 halftime lead. T.J. Layne had the first two recoveries. On the touchdowns, Morris’ first point-after attempt sailed

wide right, and the team was unable to convert a two-point conversion pass after its second score.

Kaneland regained the lead on its opening possession after halftime, capping a six-play, 54yard drive in 2:39 with a 7-yard pass from junior quarterback Jake Marczuk to senior wide receiver Connor Fedderly.

The Knights also scored on the game’s first drive – a 37-yard connection between Marczuk and Fedderly.

Fedderly grabbed Kaneland’s final TD, as well, a 15-yarder with 1:07 to play that drew the Knights within the final margin on Drew Franklin’s point-after. That reception came on the heels of Fedderly’s 38-yard catch through three Redskins defenders and Marczuk’s fourth down conversion pass to Brock Harner on a broken play.

said. “Everybody’s out there just fighting right until the very end, and Connor came up with some plays at the end. And, you know, Jake made some scrambles and made good throws.”

Kaneland led, 14-12, after three quarters and as late as with 9:08 to play in the fourth.

That’s when the Knights were unable to convert a fourthand-10 from the Morris 22.

Morris took over and mixed its bread-and-butter – keeper runs from Sobol and draws and sweeps to his brother, Keagan. A trick play helped, too, as Nathan Guth’s wide receiver screen pass to Chase Hansen earlier in the drive set the Redskins up deep inside Knights territory.

Griffin Sobol’s 10-yard scoring pass to Hansen and a conversion pass to Hansen gave Morris a 20-14 lead with 4:19 to play. The Redskins scored less than two minutes later after Kaneland threw three consecutive incom-

pletions, then shanked a punt Morris recovered at the Kaneland 5.

“We talk about persistence,” Sobol said. “Keep coming, keep coming, don’t give up. Especially when our lives are on the line.”

Morris collected five sacks, with Niewinski describing the Knights’ protection calls as similar to the Redskins’, which helped with Morris’ pressure packages.

Hansen fell on an onside kick attempt after Connor Fedderly’s third touchdown. Moments later, a handful of Knights remained slumped on the Peterson Field after Tom Fedderly’s postgame address.

“We came out, we scored right away and we had the lead [in the second half],” Tom Fedderly said. “That’s just the way the game went. It was a hardfought battle, and it came right down to the last drive.”

Mitchell showed promise as a dual-threat QB, rushing for runs of 24, 16 and 14 yards.

Lopez ran for 155 yards on 10 carries and had three TDs. In addition to its four turnovers, Larkin (0-7, 0-5 UEC River) struggled mightily in the punting game and with wrapping up East ball carriers.

“Especially their first drive, I thought we were in position every play to make a tackle, [heck], even for a loss or no gain, and they’re busting through us,” Royals coach Dragan Teonic said.

“We just did not tackle well until they put in kids that were our age. They put in their sophomores and juniors later, so that was a little bit better.”

Already down one offensive guard (Brennan Bosch, knee injury) coming in, East lost another when senior Joe Meyers hobbled off with an apparent ankle injury.

It was part of a mixed bag for the Saints, but they’ll prepare for the crosstown North Stars with their playoff ambitions intact.

“We had our ups and downs tonight for sure,” Farquhar said. “We didn’t play a totally clean game but I think we overcame some errors we made. We did a nice job of battling back from those and keeping a positive attitude through it.”

STREAMWOOD –The St. Charles North football team has been here before.

With five wins the North Stars are playoff-eligible. But some five-win teams don’t make the playoff cut, as was the case for North last season.

But it is a start.

The North Stars (5-2, 3-2 Upstate Eight Conference River) became playoff-eligible after their 44-6 win over the Streamwood Sabres on Friday night.

North can clinch a playoff berth with a win next week against St. Charles East, and the North Stars close the regular season at struggling Elgin.

“I think that we are in a very good spot right now,” North Stars senior linebacker Carson Schmitt said. “Our defense is playing very well now and out offense is starting to click. Hopefully, we can continue to play well these next two weeks and have people be looking out for us, like the Saints.”

It took about a quarter for the North Stars to figure out what Streamwood (2-5, 2-3) would do in its offensive sets.

But once the visitors got it figured out, they were off to the races.

“It was important for us on defense tonight that everyone be in the right spot at the right time,” Schmitt said.

“So we could pick up on what formation they were in and knowing what they could do when in those formations.”

As was the case for the rest of the St. Charles East football team, there was more for Mitchell to like than not despite some ragged moments Friday in a 42-13 Upstate Eight Conference River win against Larkin.

Mitchell was promoted from the sophomore team for the Larkin game as East turned to its third starting quarterback of the season.

Mitchell’s older brother, Jimmy, is a former starting QB at East who now plays at Elmhurst College.

“He taught me a lot,” Mitchell said. “He’s taught me everything that I know with how I play. He was here today. That was pretty good playing in front of him for my first varsity game. I’m pretty sure I’ll get some critiquing later.”

The Saints (3-4, 3-2 UEC River) must win road games at St. Charles North and at West Chicago to put themselves in position for a potential playoff berth.

East coach Bryce Farquhar said elevating Mitchell for the Saints’ home finale was “all about us competing for the playoffs” this year rather than trying to groom him for the future.

“He’s performed really well at the sophomore level and really earned that move up,” Farquhar said. “He’s just done some really nice things that we thought at this time of the season gives us another option.”

Despite committing a trio of first half turnovers, the Saints led, 28-6, at the break.

Senior Ramon Lopez scored on touchdown runs of 6 and 39 yards in the half, making multiple cuts on the 6-yarder that allowed East to swiftly answer Larkin’s game-opening touchdown drive.

Batavia ground game runs over Elgin Playoff-bound Bulldogs hit paydirt on seven rushing plays

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – The Batavia football team completed its first major step toward defending its IHSA Class 6A football state championship Friday by officially qualifying for the playoffs.

The Bulldogs’ 48-13 win against Elgin was Batavia’s sixth straight after a season-opening loss to Oswego.

Batavia (6-1, 5-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) used its ground game to take control against the overmatched Maroons (0-7, 0-5).

All seven Bulldog touchdowns were scored by the team’s running backs as Bat-

avia gained more than 250 yards on the ground.

J u n i o r Zach Garrett led the way, gaining 133 yards and crossing the goal line four Zach Garrett times.

Garrett scored on runs of 4 and 7 yards in the first eight minutes to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

20 and 3 yards. Noah Frazier scored the team’s fifth touchdown of the half on a 1-yard run with 3:49 left in the second quarter, giving the Bulldogs a 35-0 halftime lead.

Thomas Kamotez scampered across the goal line on a 3-yard run to put Batavia up 41-0 halfway through the third quarter and start the running clock.

Backup quarterback Greg Drake scored the final touchdown on an 8-yard run with 4 minutes left in the game.

Evan Acosta started under center for Batavia and completed 7 of 17 passes for 70 yards. Drake took over in the fourth quarter.

Geneva handles West Chicago, sets up Batavia showdown

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – With the Geneva football team leading 27-12 over West Chicago at halftime on homecoming, the fireworks display dazzled the crowd and helped ease the tension of a two-possession lead with the visitors receiving to start the second half.

But the Vikings (7-0, 5-0 Upstate Eight Conference River) did the dazzling in the second half, particularly on defense, en route to a 41-12 win.

Defensive back Sean Chambers returned Wildcats quarterback Peyton Seidler’s third interception on the night for a 55-yard touch-

down with 7:42 remaining in the fourth quarter to ice what had been a competitive game for most of the night.

“I’ve got to give credit to the blockers,” Taormina said. “They opened up holes and I just take off and go so thanks to the offensive line.”

Vikings coach Rob Wicinski was pleased with his team’s effort and ability to avoid the distracting nature of a homecoming game.

“This was a really tough situation,” Wicinski

said. “It was a tough game with homecoming; there’s a lot of distractions and just the way the season’s progressed I was really proud of them.”

“We weren’t as clean as we were the last couple weeks but I’ve got a veteran team and a veteran coaching staff. We didn’t panic and just stayed the course.”

The Vikings opened up a 20-6 lead heading to the second quarter after a strong start from Taormina, who finished the night with 15 carries for 70 yards in addition to his two touchdowns.

Both of his touchdowns came in the first quarter, with the second one coming off a long drive to end it.

West Chicago falls to 3-4, 2-3.

The Vikings will enjoy homecoming this weekend but the party won’t last long with a matchup against defending IHSA 6A state champion and archrival Batavia to determine the conference next week.

“It wasn’t the greatest win but it was against a pretty good team,” Santacaterina said. “We thought we left some points out there and didn’t play our best but, hey, it’s a win. We’re 7-0 and this is exactly where we want to be.

“We’re happy, we’re excited. I’m sure Batavia is excited. It’s going to be a great show next week.”

A Foreign Exchange Student from Germany, Derowski, hasn’t lost a match yet at 2nd singles. She is coachable, has a positive attitude and always wants to do better.

Berango, a junior, rushed for over 200 yards against Genoa-Kingston this year. Some highlights as running back in five games include 8 touchdowns, 12 point conversion, 79 rushes for 547 total yards, and 6 catches for 45 yards.

Dunn, an outside hitter and a captain for the Kaneland Volleyball Team, was All-tournament team this year for the Wheaton-North Tournament and Centennial Tournament.

Dunn is committed to play for Ball State University next year.

In Maddie’s 3rd year on the varsity team she has been a starter all 3 seasons. She is verbally committed to play on scholarship at NCAA I Elon University as a libero and was just named to the all tournament team at the Waubonsie Valley Warrior Blast, in which she led team in digs with 62.

Monica is the 200 and 500 winner against St. Charles East. She was also the 200 Free winner at the Fenwick Invite.

Jordan is a junior standout for the Lady Saints Swim Team. She is the team’s top 200 IM and 100 Backstroke swimmer and was a State Finalist in those two events last year.

Justin starts at tailback and has also started at corner. On offense, Justin has 389 yards rushing for an average of 5.8 yds/carry, caught 6 passes for a 13.83 yards/ catch average and has 12 touchdowns. Defensively, Justin has one interception, 9 tackles and returned KO’s and punts. adno=0283198

Emotional St. Francis takes down Montini

The Spartans used that emotion to its fullest in a 31-7 win against their rivals.

St. Francis improved to 5-2 and 1-1 in the Chicago Catholic League Green with the victory.

“It means everything,” senior receiver Michael Shaw said. “To these seniors it means everything. It feels so good to win. Senior night, no better way to go out.”

Shaw had a number of big plays in the first half to get the Spartans going. He broke a tackle on a screen pass and went 70 yards for the game’s first touchdown.

On the next possession, he had back-to-back catches of 37 and 36 yards to set up a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Clint Bobowski.

Shaw had 153 of his 174 yards by halftime.

Batavia AD: Time to bring athletes back on campus Batavia athletic director Dave Andrews thinks Bulldogs athletes deserve better.

Referring to a space crunch that he estimated displaces about 300 athletes and band members who are forced to practice off campus, Andrews considers it crucial that Batavia residents support an advisory question on the Nov. 4 ballot that seeks to target half of $15 million in alternate revenue bonds toward athletic facility improvements.

The school district said that alternate revenue bonds “are repaid from existing operating revenues and will not increase taxes,” but Andrews acknowledged a portion of the community will remain skeptical any time a school requests facility upgrades, particularly for athletics.

The Batavians for Responsible Government group has officially opposed the district’s plan, writing that “There are no magic money trees on school district property” and the cost will eventually be shouldered by Batavia taxpayers.

Still, Andrews said he retains optimism that the Batavia athletic community will show strong support at the polls. Under the district’s proposal, two synthetic turf surfaces would be built for athletics and physical education classes, one in Bulldog Stadium and the other a multiuse facility that would be used for practices and competitions. Upgrades to the varsity softball and JV baseball and softball fields would be among the other athletic components of the plan.

“We’re spending money to transport kids and rent facilities and our kids are just not getting what they deserve as far as being on site, being part of the school community and being part of what we’re trying to do here at the high school,” Andrews said.

Andrews said the 46 acres of property Batavia sits on is “extremely low for a Chicago suburban school,” and recent additions to the school such as the Batavia Fine Arts Centre and an indoor fieldhouse have swallowed additional space.

The Bulldogs’ football program now practices on the varsity and lower-level baseball outfield grass, and had to rent use of Mooseheart’s turf field during last year’s run to the Class 6A state championship.

Residents often say booster clubs should be responsible for athletic facility upgrades.

Andrews said Batavia’s booster club has helped with projects such as the new dugouts and fencing for Batavia’s varsity baseball field, but he said it’s unrealistic that booster club fundraising could accomplish what the advisory question seeks to set in motion.

“The booster club is right along with us this whole entire time,” Andrews said.

“They are going to do those smaller, minor projects, but we’re talking $7.5 million.

I don’t know if any booster club in the country can raise

$7.5 million in any reasonable period of time.”

The programs crowded off campus practice at various sites in town, with the boys and girls soccer teams setting up shop at H.C. Storm Elementary.

“It [would be] great to get back on campus, to have a true surface,” Bulldogs soccer coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “It’ll be great long-term for both the girls and guys programs.”

St. Charles East has launched a frisbee club this school year under the guidance of sponsor John Biernacki, an English teacher at East. The club meets each Wednesday afternoons on campus and is “year-roundsh,” according to Biernacki, referencing an anticipated break during the winter.

About 15 to 20 club members meet each week. In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, Biernacki discussed the club’s appeal and how it came to be. The following is an edited transcript:

What’s the back story on how this took shape?

So at the end of last school year, late May, early June, I was approached by two sophomore students [Sean Neff and Sean Martinez] regarding a need for some kind of frisbee club, and they said we have lots of [frisbee enthusiasts] and we envision a game of ultimate frisbee, maybe frisbee golf in some capacity, but we just kind of want all things frisbee and are wondering, if you could sponsor that. So I agreed, because I do think it’s a need at our school. I think you say ‘ultimate frisbee’ or just say the word ‘frisbee’ and a lot of eyes light up because it’s kind of a harmless activity that doesn’t get a whole lot of attention but everyone has played it in some capacity, so I agreed to sponsor the club. Then at the beginning of this year we held an informational meeting just kind talking about what we’re about.

Is it pretty mixed, gender-wise?

Yeah, it’s co-ed. It’s open to all levels, no experience is necessary. We tend to get more males out there but we have a steady commitment from maybe three or four girls and once in a while they bring their friends.

How would you characterize the vibe when everyone’s out playing? How laid back or how how competitive is it?

I’ve never called it overly competitive, but at the same time, I wouldn’t call it pure leisure. I can honestly say everyone is having fun

while they’re playing. You can see it on their faces. I would say some kids take it more seriously than others but nobody takes it too serious. We divvy up the teams so they’re fairly even so that creates a nice, competitive environment, but not to a fault.

Are there some beginners starting from scratch?

Yes. … We get some freshmen out there so they’re probably trying to get their feet wet and see what different clubs are available at St. Charles East, and this one kind of sounds enticing, so the skill level might be beginner, novice, for a few of them, but the cool thing is the leadership [in the club], everyone makes everyone feel welcome, and that’s important.

Did you model this after any other clubs around here that you know of?

No. This is built from the ground up so I can say we really did not have anything to compare it to. I don’t think St. Charles North has one. I know there is talk of it now that they know we have one, but it truly generated from two guys who just loved playing frisbee and wanted something more out of it.

So how are your frisbee skills?

Mine, personally? I’ve always played recreationally with friends. In college, I would play ultimate frisbee on the quad (at Illinois State). We never took it too seriously but at the same capacity as what we’re doing in this club, I never would have just considered it leisure, either. It was always just friendly competition and a good way to be outside and enjoy the weather for as long as we can.

WEEKEND LIFE Healing horses “It was a magical evening,” said one of Casey’s Safe Haven founders, Sue Balla, a few weeks ago when Rustic Road Farm hosted its third annual “Galloping to the Rescue” fundraiser to benefit its Elburn neighbor, Casey’s Safe Haven, a holistic horse rescue where Holly and I recently began volunteering.

Dave’s BBQ and super-fun DJ Greg Roerig of Funtime Music did not disappoint, and nor did the spectacular sunset over the party tent, a welcome surprise on this otherwise stormy weekend. Petunia, Charlie and Nemo, a few of Casey’s rescued equines, also made an appearance, and greeted their adoring fans, and then the real fun began.

Dozens of items were donated for the silent auction, including handmade quilts, gift certificates, electronics and artwork, but Holly had eyes for only one item, a basket containing hot cocoa, mugs and fuzzy slippers. She wasn’t taking any chances, so she dropped all eight of her raffle tickets on that one item. Impressed with her focus, I suggested that the laws of probability were in her favor.

“Mom, I failed probability in math,” she said. Maybe so, but time would tell.

When the announcer confessed that she hoped to win it herself, Holly mumbled, “You’re going down, sister.” Ha! And win it she did!

“Finally, I got hot chocolate,” she said, victorious, as she sat back down with her huge basket of goodies. She’d been after me to buy some (naturally, I’d been putting it off in favor of finding an organic brand), but she took matters into her own hands. We had a blast, but more importantly, the event was the most important Casey’s Safe Haven fundraiser of the year. Unfortunately, less money was raised than Balla had hoped for, though Casey’s did receive a generous $3,000 donation from Wild Horse Winery.

In addition, a percentage of each bottle of Wild Horse Pino Noir purchased will be donated to Casey’s.

Balla hopes that other corporations and individuals will find creative ways to help the rescue because, “The more you raise, the more you can help,” she said.

The thing is, it’s not just the ponies they help.

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose For example, Monday afternoon, several residents of GreenFields retirement community in Geneva made the trip to Casey’s to visit the retired equines, whom Holly and I noticed were particularly curious about the guests using walkers and wheelchairs.

“I was in a wheelchair, at one point,” Balla recalls. “It’s tough when you always have to look up at everyone, but they’ll be eyeball to eyeball,” she said.

She was right. The connections were palpable. I’m not sure who grinned more – Casey’s volunteers, the folks from GreenField’s, or the ponies. Holly and I are still just getting to know them, but even we recognized the import of 17 year-old former pony-ride pony Charlie and his apparent comfort with his new friends.

“To see him walk up to a group of people … if anyone had seen him three years ago, they never would have believed it,” said Balla.

Charlie was “terrified of people in general, and of men in particular, but there’s no panic in him anymore,” said Balla, who believes Charlie was badly abused before coming to Casey’s.

She credits Casey’s volunteer Ryan Zabilka with Charlie’s “miraculous” recovery.

“Ryan doesn’t have a mean bone in his body,” she said of the volunteer who has pitched in at Casey’s several days a week for several months. “He is the kindest man-soul I’ve ever met, and Charlie knows it,” she said. Animals are astute judges of character.

Balla hopes a group of veterans from GreenField’s will also visit, soon.

“I want to be there to see that, too,” Holly volunteered as we left the barn Monday afternoon. “I could have stayed there all day.”

Balla thinks the veterans will enjoy the equines, too. “[The horses] are incredible healers and teachers, if you shut up and listen,” she said. “Every great lesson I’ve ever learned, I’ve learned from a horse.”

In divorce, equal is not always fair Sometimes the word equal is confused with the word equitable. Equal means all are given the same. Equitable means all are treated fairly. This is an important distinction, especially in divorce, where equal is not always fair.

I’ve been a therapist and a mediator for over 35 years. In my work as a court appointed mediator with two large judicial systems I saw couples just starting through the divorce process, as well as many who had been through a divorce previously and were coming back to the courts with post decree conflicts. Many of these conflicts were the result of poorly crafted divorce documents that failed to consider the unique needs and circumstances of the family. No two families are alike, so no two divorce documents can be crafted the same.

Taking into consideration the needs of the family, one must consider the best interest of the children as the most important. How we handle our divorce is a lesson that will affect our children’s lives for generations to come. Mess up the children and that will come back to haunt you as they one day select a mate, and raise their own family in the shadow of how you raised them.

Divorce is considered one of the most difficult experiences in a child’s life, and can be made even more devastating when handled poorly. When parents use the children as pawns or bargaining chips in their divorce, the children suffer. And when parents consider the children as a part of the marital property to be divided equally, the children suffer. Children are not property and equal is not always fair.

The process of divorce is painful, and so often leaves parents worn down and ready to settle for less than ideal just to get it over with. Too often the needs of the children are overlooked in favor of the needs of the parents.

One way to keep the health of the family in focus during a divorce is to run each decision through a sort of “child filter.” Pretend you are the ages of your children and that you are going through this divorce as one of them. If when you are making divorce decisions you use this filter, you may find that you make decisions that are quite different than before.

One decision mistake that I see repeated more and more is the 50-50 parenting-time schedule. This is where the children spend an equal amount of time at both of their parent’s residences.

Sometimes this split can take on the extreme form of one week at one

THEORY Jamie Palmer parents and the next week at the others. Fifty-fifty might be equal, but it is definitely not equitable. Unless both homes maintain a similar lifestyle and both parents have an exceptionally good ability to communicate with one another, then equal time will not serve the best interests of the children.

For example, if children experience differing discipline styles, it can have a permanent impact on a child’s self esteem, i.e, one home has the lenient parent and the other home has a strict disciplinarian. Even in rare cases where both parents are completely on the same page with regard to raising their children, a 50-50 split is not recommended.

Don’t make the mistake of asking your children what they want either.

They almost always will say whatever they think their parent wants to hear.

No child wants to be asked to choose between his or her parents.

Divorce is not a natural process.

But, if divorce is imminent, make it the best you can. If possible, choose a parenting schedule that works with your child’s normal schedule.

For instance, (and this is just one of many scenarios), weekends always seem different from the weekday. One parent can take part of – or all of – the weekends.

The schedule can even switch completely during the summer months when the children are not in school.

Equal is not the goal here. We are going for comfortable and fair to the children’s needs, not the parents. Children need to know in advance what their schedules are so they can feel that they have some control over their own life. If you carefully craft your parenting schedule, your children will be able to move seamlessly between the two households, where the only real difference is the parent in charge.

Utilizing the services of a professionally trained divorce mediator is a compassionate way to work through a divorce where all parties’ needs are carefully considered.

Digital fitness monitor helps you adopt healthier lifestyle Dear Doctor K: I’d like to be more active. Do you think a digital fitness monitor will help?

Dear Reader: When digital fitness monitors (DFMs) became available several years ago, I was initially skeptical. I figured they would be the latest example of our fascination with electronic devices and that people would quickly tire of them.

Well, surveys show that some people have quickly tired of them and left them to collect dust in a drawer. However, many folks use them consistently and swear by them. Different strokes for different folks.

DFMs come in wearable styles such as wristbands, watches and pendants, or hand-held pieces you can clip onto a sleeve or slip into a pocket. They monitor one or more things that affect your physical fitness. They also nag you when you’ve fallen behind your personal goals – but it’s hard to get mad at them.

DFM features may be simple, tracking the number of steps you take or the calories you burn. Or they may be more sophisticated, capturing your heart rate and sleep patterns. Some have alarms that remind you to be more active, or announce that you’ve

Many let you virtually compete with family and friends.

But do DFMs make you more active? Research suggests they do. In an analysis of 26 studies, pedometer users added more than 2,000 steps per day to their baseline over 18 weeks. More important, they lowered their blood pressure and body mass index.

DFM prices vary widely. If you’re strapped for cash, buy a basic pedometer, which simply counts your steps.

Once you have a DFM, determine your baseline by wearing the pedometer for three days from the time you get up until bedtime. Divide the total steps taken by three, to get an idea of your average steps per day.

Each week, add 500 steps per day until you reach your goal. Many experts recommend aiming for 10,000 steps a day.

With or without a DFM, it’s a good idea to add more walking to your routine. Dr. Richard

Ginsburg, a psychologist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, suggests the following to sneak more steps into your day: • Get a dog. You’ll have to walk the animal at least once or twice a day.

• Consider sports. Take up golf, for example, which involves a lot of walking.

• Visit walking-only destinations. You could log a few miles at a museum, botanical garden or amusement park.

• Window-shop at the mall.

One lap around an average mall’s upper level ranges from a quarter to a half mile.

For people who really want to adopt a healthier lifestyle, digital fitness monitors make it easier to do. Some of my patients, and my friends, seem almost obsessed with them. One of my patients has chosen not just to average 10,000 steps a day – he has to beat that number every day. This is a healthy obsession to have!

Athlete’s career is over Dr. Wallace: I have a most unusual problem, and I desperately need your help. My brother is a good football player.

Last week, he and a guy from another school got into a fistfight during the game and both guys were kicked out. It’s the second time my brother has been kicked out of a game this season, so the principal suspended him from the team for the remainder of the season.

Since my brother is in the 12th grade, it means that his high school football career is over and he probably won’t get any kind of college athletic scholarship. My parents, especially my dad, and my brother are livid about his being kicked off of the team. They thought about getting an attorney to sue the principal and the school district, but decided not to after they all had a conference with the coach.

Now comes the unusual problem.

The guy who got into the fight with my brother was a guy I’ve been dating. He attends a high school across town. We met at a party about a year ago and have been dating on and off ever since then.

My brother blames Steve for the fight because he said Steve intentionally hit him during the game.

Steve said he did hit my brother, but that it was an accident.

He has called my brother to apologize, but my brother won’t talk with him. I have not gone out with Steve since the fight because he didn’t call me.

Last night, he called

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace and said he wanted to see me after his next home game. That means I would see him at about 10 p.m. and be home for curfew at 11:30 p.m. All we would do is get something to eat and talk.

I told him yes.

Now my entire family is ticked off with me. My dad called me Brutus and my brother said that I was a traitor.

Dr. Wallace, I’m being blamed for something I had nothing to do with. I was dating Steve before the fight, so why shouldn’t I date him after it? After all, Steve is not a criminal.

What should I do, continue seeing Steve or bow to family pressure and stop seeing him? Steve is a really nice guy. – Nameless, Des Moines, Iowa Dear Nameless: This is definitely an unusual problem, and I can sympathize with the pressure you’re under.

If your relationship with Steve is casual, with no chance of turning serious, it might be better, for the sake of family harmony, to discontinue seeing him.

But if it’s anything more than that, by all means, keep on going out with him!

My sense is that it is, so I say go ahead.

Just be prepared to have your family make things difficult for you. But remember that time heals most wounds, even emotional ones.

All top bridge players are good at math. But a lot of the sums should not be beyond anyone.

Look at today’s South hand. Partner opens one club, East passes, South responds one spade, West intervenes with two hearts, North passes, and East passes.

What should South do now?

At the table, South, someone who has been successful in his career, passed out two hearts.

What was he thinking? As soon as North opened one club, South should have said to himself, “I have 14 points; we are bidding at least game.”

South should have made a takeout double. North would have bid two spades, showing three-card support. (With four spades, he would have raised to two spades on round two.) Then South would have jumped to four spades.

How should South plan the play in four spades after West leads the club queen?

One other point in the auction: East should not have passed over two hearts with four trumps and a void. He should have bid (three or) four hearts.

South is faced with losers in each suit. But he will survive just as long as he plays low from the dummy at trick one. Suppose East ruffs (it is stronger defense to discard) and shifts to a heart.

(South won’t misguess that suit if left to himself.) West wins and gives his partner another ruff – again, declarer must play a low club from the dummy. Say East exits with a heart to dummy’s king. Declarer draws trumps, cashes his club king, crosses to dummy with a diamond, and discards his diamond loser on the club ace to get home.

Jenny McCarthy & Donnie Wahlberg To Our Friends In St Charles, A little over a year ago, we made our first appearance together at a very special event at The Hotel Baker in St Charles. We were immediately taken with the ambience and spirit of the historic building. We were also blown away by the hospitality if the people of the quaint little town in which this building stood. As our relationship grew, our memories of St Charles stayed alive in us. So when it came time to choose a place for our wedding, St Charles crept its way onto the list. Sure, we talked of tropical islands and exotic locations. Of a possible quick trip elopement to Vegas or City Hall. We considered almost every place on earth but somehow, St Charles just kept prevailing. And so it was decided. We would go back to the place where our love first took flight. We would come home to St Charles.

We could not be happier with that decision. The Hotel Baker and its staff were a dream. The locals treated us like family. The police dept, the many proprietors and small business owners, welcomed us like heroes. And while some of our “hollywood” type friends could not quite grasp why we chose St Charles, it didn’t take them long to figure it out. In St Charles, we found our little piece of heaven.

It is a very comforting feeling to know that the whimsical, small town places that our grandparents told us about, really do still exist. The small town, Main St America where neighbors wish you well, and where everyone has a kind word to say. Yes it’s true, we could have chosen anywhere on earth to share this special day together. Instead, we chose the most perfect place on earth to do it; The Hotel Baker in St Charles, Illinois.
