ednesday was National Walk to School Day and Bike to School Day, and as I arrived early to Norton Creek Elementary School in West Chicago, I noticed a beautiful fog hovering over the fields surrounding the school, which is part of St.

Charles School District 303.

It was a calm before the storm of hundreds of students making their way on foot and bike with their parents to celebrate the national day. Some younger siblings were even being towed in wagons.

I walked to school until high school, when my mom had a job close to the school and would give my friends and me a ride as we listened to the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack or some very bad ’90s music in the car’s tape player.

Memories of my walks to grade school and junior high school were filled with laughing with my friends, crunching dead bugs under our feet during cicada season and having adventures on our way home.

BATAVIA – All Fermilab public events and tours have been suspended because of the lapse in federal funding that has resulted from the partial government shutdown currently in effect.

One such event has been rescheduled. The “Physics of Superheroes” event, which was set for Friday, instead is scheduled at 8 p.m. Dec. 6.

Tickets issued will be valid for the December event, according to a news release issued by Fermilab.

“If you already have tickets [either in your possession or at will call] and wish to attend

this event, there is no need to do anything as your tickets will be good,” the release stated. “If your tickets are at will call, we will be mailing those to you in the next week.”

Pumpkin Trolley to run for next two weeks

SOUTH ELGIN – The Pumpkin Trolley will operate the next two weekends at the Fox River Trolley Museum, 365 S. LaFox St. (Route 31), South Elgin. The trolley will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to Sunday and Oct. 19-20.

Bridge deck repairs will begin Monday

Bridge deck repairs on the Kirk Road over Union Pacific Railroad Bridge will begin Monday and are anticipated to be complete

This work will involve concrete deck patching at various areas on the bridge deck. Kirk Road will be reduced to one lane of traffic during construction.

SCARING UP VISITORS

Scarecrow Fest attracts tens of thousands of tourists to St. Charles

CHARLES – In recent years, the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau has, through surveys, tracked statistics about Scarecrow Fest attendees, including the number from the Fox Valley, the number of repeat visitors and the number of Illinois communities they represented.

This year, Executive Director Amy Egolf said, the visitors bureau wants to know something else: Of those who have been to Scarecrow Fest in the past, when was the last time they came to St. Charles for reasons other than the festival?

Exposing visitors to the city’s other amenities – such as its parks and Pheasant Run Resort – is, Egolf said, “the whole mission of the festival from the standpoint of the bureau.”

The 28th annual Scarecrow Fest begins today and runs through Sunday in various downtown St. Charles locations, with scarecrow displays in Lincoln Park and the new city parking lot just west of Third Street between Cedar and State streets.

Other activities include live entertainment, a carnival and a make-your-own-scarecrow activity.

Scarecrow Fest is the only event the visitors bureau produces, Egolf said.

“The biggest challenge that we have is making sure the festival is at least coming in on budget,” she said. “In tracking the festival since I have been here, it’s been in the red as often as it’s been in the black. We’re committed to the festival because we understand it’s a marketing tool for the area.”

Additionally, she said, the visitors bureau distributes e-blasts and direct mail postcards to its database of more than 14,000 people and sends information to tour operators to encourage them to sell bus trips to St. Charles during Scarecrow Fest.

“This year, we expect to greet 12 motorcoaches, including two from Wisconsin,” Egolf said.

Attendance in recent years has ranged from 60,000 in 2006, 2007 and 2009 to 150,000 in 2011, a year that Scarecrow Fest had three days of perfect weather, according to the visitors bureau.

The visitors bureau estimates the economic impact of each Scarecrow Fest based on the expenses by day and overnight visitors, Egolf said. Last year, the visitors bureau estimated spending at $4.1 million.

But, Egolf said, Scarecrow Fest brings much more than dollars to the community.

Dominick’s parent, Safeway Inc., to close 72 stores by early 2014

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Dominick’s Finer Foods will withdraw from the Chicago market, where it was founded in 1918, by early next year, parent company Safeway Inc. announced Thursday.

According to a statement on its website, Safeway will exit the market where it operates 72 Dominick’s stores, including one at 2000 S. Randall Road, Geneva.

Geneva Economic Development Director Ellen Divita said talk about Dominick’s closing has been going on for 10 years.

“The real estate people are surprised that it is all at once,” Divita said.

Divita said she has been in talks with the property owner for the past two years, The Crown Group in Hoffman Estates, in anticipation of Dominick’s closing.

The Geneva Dominick’s is about 65,000 square feet, so the first choice for replacement is another grocery store, she

said.

“It’s always a loss when you lose a big box – where will those folks go?” Divita said, of the closure’s impact on Geneva. “Other grocery stores will pick up the business. Will they go to Aldi, Fresh Market, Jewel? It all depends on transportation patterns and whether they’re buying quick meals or staples.”

This is the second Dominick’s to close in the area, as the 55,000-square-foot store at 2063 Route 38, St. Charles, closed in 2010. It reopened briefly as a hardware store, but closed after six months

by August 2011. It remains vacant.

“We’re certainly disappointed but not entirely surprised,” Mayor Kevin Burns wrote in a text message. “We have confidence that the power and prestige of Randall Road will attract new users to that site.”

Dominick’s was founded by Italian immigrant Dominick DiMatteo in 1918. Safeway, Inc. of California acquired the chain’s 116 stores in 1998.

JoAnn worked many years for the Kane County clerk’s office in Geneva. She loved spending time with her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.

ELBURN – Dennis R. Loske, 47, of Elburn, passed from this life to eternal life in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family.

Dennis was born March 5, 1966, in Chicago, to Dieter and Monica (McDonald) Loske. He grew up in the family homes in Lombard, Forest Lake and Barrington. Dennis graduated from DeVry with his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and from Illinois Institute of Technology with a master’s degree in computer science. He met and married his wife, Becky (Barnas), at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington. They were married July 11, 1992. They lived in Wheaton until moving to Elburn nearly 20 years ago to start and raise their family.

Dennis worked in the information technology field for many years. He started at AT&T/Bell Labs after college, worked for several computer consulting firms and then spent the past 12 years with CFS Consulting Group of Oak Brook.

He was active in Christ Community Church, St. Charles, in both the KidsWorld and AWANA ministries. He served as a Boy Scout leader for his sons in Troop 777 of LaFox. He also participated in several Bible studies, both at Christ Community Church and Bible Study Fellowship.

His life was devoted to his family and his God. He was a man of faith, a devoted husband and attentive father. Some of his hobbies included family vacations to national parks, running, cycling with friends and brewing a variety of beers.

Born: Sept. 23, 1917; in Elgin Died: Oct. 7, 2013 WEST CHICAGO – Evelyn G. Marschinke, 96, lifelong resident of West Chicago, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013.

She was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Elgin, to Loren and Pansy Gillum.

Evelyn was a 1934 graduate of West Chicago High School and attended Moser Business College in Chicago. She was united in marriage to Earl Marschinke on May 18, 1940.

Evelyn worked from 1935 to 1947 at W.L. Stensgoard & Association as a secretary. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of West Chicago since 1931, where she was a Life Deacon and secretary from 1963 to 1969. She also worked as a clerk for the city of West Chicago from 1969 until her retirement in July 1985.

Evelyn was the Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of Illinois Grand Representatives Association, International Grand Representatives Association, West Chicago Historical Society, Central DuPage Hospital Auxiliary, Fox Valley Chapter Batavia O.E.S. Lodge #265, Wayne Township Seniors, and served on the Senior Council for the West Chicago Park District.

Evelyn enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, Bible study, reading and especially volunteering for Central DuPage Hospital, Meals on Wheels and Rotary Club.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Paul (Sandy) Marschinke of St. Charles; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Marschinke of Wayne; grandsons, Dan (Karmah) of San Francisco, Chris of Elburn and Curtis of Wayne; relatives; and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl, in 1962; and son, Wayne, in 2007.

BATAVIA – Aileen Ruby Weber, 76, of Batavia, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was the

daughter of Ruby and Burl Humes.

Aileen was a homemaker while her children were young. She did foster care many years for 17 children, mostly babies.

They were the love of her life. In her church, she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 20 years, and then she helped in the nursery. She ran the kitchen for potlucks. Her faith is what sustained her through her battle with cancer. She never lost her love of her Lord.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Jay; two daughters, Carol (Barry) Mutehart of Hampshire and Karen (Brandt) Hubal of Circle Pines, Minn.; three sons, Scott (Jennifer) Weber of Canandaigua, N.Y., Peter Weber of Aurora and Jonathan Weber of Chicago; five grandchildren, Michael, Melody, Matt, Andy and Violet; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Aaron, with one great-grandchild, Emily, due in November. She also is survived by two stepsons, John Weber of Alaska and Jeff Weber of North Aurora; and two stepgrandchildren.

She also is survived by two brothers, Ivan (Beverly) Humes and Norman (Joyce) Humes; and was preceded in death by her brother, Albert Humes.

McIlvaine faces new pressure for project

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Kane County judge Thursday set a hearing date of Nov. 27 for attorneys for the city of St. Charles to ask the court to force Clifford McIlvaine to finish work he promised to do on his home.

The attorney representing St. Charles, Phillip Luetkehans, told Kane County Judge David Akemann that it’s been more than a year beyond the time the work was to have be done.

“This was to be in compliance with the code, and it is

not,” Luetkehans said.

The city sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to finish a home repair project he started in 1975.

Akemann had permitted the city to go ahead and make repairs to his home, although McIlvaine alClifford leged that conMcIlvaine tractors caused damage to his home in the process and made unnecessary changes.

Akemann also set a schedule for McIlvaine to file a de-

tailed report of water damage to his property.

The water damage was caused by a July rain that leaked into his house after the city of St. Charles hired a contractor to repair McIlvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St. McIlvaine said the city, as the general contractor, ultimately is responsible for the actions of its subcontractor, Absolute Construction and Roofing Company.

McIlvaine said the roofer removed insulation and threw it out, and he is seeking to be compensated for that loss as well.

McIlvaine said he would have higher heating bills now that the additional insulation was removed.

McIlvaine said the leak damaged some 300 electronic items at a loss that begins at $40,000.

In July, Luetkehans said the city’s contractor did not properly secure a tarp to McIlvaine’s garage and solarium while the roof was being repaired, allowing the rain damage to occur.

Luetkehans said among the city’s remedies to push for the work to be done could include a request for jail time for McIlvaine, but not until other options are exhausted.

McIlvaine was briefly jailed in September 2012 when the longtime St. Charles resident refused to comply with city’s plumbing code as part of the home improvement project.

In a separate action, Akemann denied a request from McIlvaine to find a city code enforcement officer in contempt and put the officer in jail for a month.

Geneva Public Library at crossroads

Imagine the Tri-City libraries as high school students.

St. Charles, the straight-A, organized, neatly-combed, college-bound overachiever.

Batavia, the Joe Cool, espresso-drinking, black T-shirted, swaggering hipster.

And Geneva, the diminutive, scrawny kid whose head people pat as he tries to shove his book load into his Lilliputian locker.

As the Kane County Chronicle’s “Our View” pointed out Oct. 5, “The Geneva Public Library is at a crossroads ... ” after dropping the option to buy the Cetron building.

Everyone agrees, from library staff to residents I’ve talked to, that the GPL needs more parking spaces. But does it need more interior room? Not all think so.

But the numbers show that many still use the library. The Chronicle reports that as many as 16,728 registered Geneva patrons checked out 568,000 items last year.

At a recent board of trustees meeting, according to the Chronicle, members threw out their ideas. Robert Shiffler suggested a new building on the present site.

Susan Shivers wanted to know Library Director Matt Teske’s vision for the library. Patricia Lord encouraged a patron survey.

Director Teske told the Chronicle that after establishing priorities, “ ... we’re going to need some professional assistance in helping us determine our space needs ... .”

It’s evident Geneva needs to do something. We’ve limped along long enough.

Case in point: The few times the library’s smaller meeting room was available, our memoir writers group met there until the stuffy, close, claustrophobic atmosphere drove us to Panera.

If we don’t improve our library, people might get the impression we don’t care about books, movies or culture in general. And we’d be

Why, you ask? Consider this analogy. My basement is full of about 4,000 books. I have trouble convincing my wife, Tia, I need every one.

“You’ll never read them all,” she correctly points out.

“That’s not the point,” I counter, not sure what the point is, but my literary gut believes there is one.

Then, reading what “Freakonomics” co-author Stephen J. Dubner had to say, I rejoice. “ ... Any family that has 100 children’s books in the home,” Dubner explains, “is likely to be pretty educated to begin with ... and values or treasures or rewards education to begin with.”

Whatever Genevans decide to do – or not do – about our library, it will reflect our values. Do we want to remain that punk kid with no locker space for all his stuff, or do we work as a community to graduate an honors student?

Be heard. Write board President Esther Steel (esteel@gpld. org), Director Teske (mteske@ gpld.org) or your local newspapers. Because library aficionados are getting ready to speak their minds at 7 p.m. Oct. 24.

Don’t allow our library to come across as a high school dropout.

To the Editor: Each fall, homeowners are faced with the task of disposing of leaves. Environmental laws passed in the 1990s forbid burning of leaves and dumping leaves in landfills in many places. Citizens often object to compost piles of leaves because of odor. What to do?

There is a simple and cost-effective solution – leaf mulching. In 1991, Michigan State University studied the effect of mulching various types of leaves into existing lawns. It conducted other studies, as well. The results

are impressive: 1. Weed control – significantly fewer weeds grew on plots where certain leaves were mulched. There can be nearly a 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass after adopting certain mulching practices for three years.

2. Leaves are fertilizer – mulching leaves into the lawn can be like an application of fertilizer.

Thus, mulching leaves can have the dual effect of producing better lawns and solving the problem of leaf disposal for the homeowner and our cities. Presently,

homeowners and cities spend considerable resources disposing of leaves. Let’s save resources by mulching.

I have practiced mulching for 10 years and can vouch for its effectiveness.

Mulching requires no special equipment. Simply take the grass catcher off the mower, and mow over the leaves until they are dime-sized. This may require several passes.

Six inches of leaves may be mulched at a time. Applying fall fertilizer after mulching hastens the decomposition of leaves.

Vote on discounted electricity bills seems likely

If placed on the ballot, as Kojzarek expects, the March election would mark the second time the question has been put to voters in unincorporated areas of Kane County.

In March 2012, voters narrowly defeated a similar referendum question, as the measure fell 207 votes short.

Kojzarek said he believes voters would approve the measure now.

In the past few years, several Kane County communities have approved such aggregation plans, essentially

giving their local village or city governments the authority to negotiate for electricity service for the entire community, much as is done for curbside trash and recycling pickup service.

Early returns from those communities have indicated that residents saved as much as 25 percent to 30 percent off their electric bills after the aggregation programs were instituted.

Should the aggregation question be approved, any residents who don’t want to participate would have the right to opt out of the program.

GENEVA – Kane County voters living outside of cities and villages appear likely to get the chance next spring to vote themselves discounted electricity bills, if they give the county government the authority to negotiate with electricity providers on their behalf.

Thursday, the Kane County Board’s Energy and Environment Committee unanimously agreed to recommend the full County Board approve placing on the March 2014 primary election ballot a referendum asking voters whether the county can begin

a so-called electricity aggregation program for most unincorporated areas of Kane.

The measure would cover unincorporated areas in most townships in the county, including St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Blackberry, Campton and Sugar Grove. Only Aurora and Dundee townships would be excluded, because they already enacted such aggregation proposals.

Mill Creek, which lies in unincorporated Geneva, Blackberry and Batavia townships, would be included in the referendum.

Panel discusses dangers of heroin

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell had a simple message for those attending Thursday’s heroin abuse, prevention and community resources seminar at Batavia High School – don’t try heroin.

“Please don’t go down this road,” Russell said. “I don’t want to have to tell your loved ones that you are dead.”

Russell was one of several speakers who spoke at the seminar. As Russell noted, heroin use in Kane County is on the rise.

“In Kane County, we had 27 heroin deaths last year, and 14 so far this year,” he said.

There are people behind the numbers, such as 24-yearold Louie Miceli, one of 43 people in DuPage County who died of heroin abuse last year.

“Our hope is to reach teens and adults before heroin does,” said Kristen Gutierrez, executive director of LTM Heroin Awareness and Support Foundation and Miceli’s older sister. “He had his whole life in front of him and heroin stole it away.”

She told those in the audience to watch for warning

signs.

“Prescription drug abuse is a gateway to heroin,” Gutierrez said. “Addiction is a disease and the addiction is progressive.”

She said those kids experimenting with heroin don’t know that heroin is “so deadly and dangerous.”

As Mike Moran, executive director of Aurora-based Breaking Free drug counseling services explained, heroin is an opiate that brings the brain pleasure.

“All of our brains have pleasure centers,” he said.

“There are certain substances that activate pleasure centers in our brains.”

And heroin is highly addictive, Moran said.

“Heroin is extremely effective in hijacking the brain,” he said. “You no longer have the choice of using or not using.”

Fortunately, there is hope, said recovering heroin addict Richard Hertz.

“I’ve been six years and six months free from heroin,” Hertz told the audience.

“You can be stronger than it and you can prevent it. We all want to stop this addiction from starting in the first place.”

GENEVA – Later this month and throughout much of November, Kane County officials will get live demonstrations of the various kinds of computer software systems they are considering hiring a vendor to create for their courts-related networks.

And the public will be invited to attend, too.

For the past few weeks, the county government’s information technology professionals and hired consultants have been reviewing proposals from various vendors seeking the contract to create the software system.

Since receiving the proposals at the end of August, they have reduced the list to four potential vendors, said Roger Fahnestock, Kane County’s chief information officer.

From here, each of the four finalists will be invited to Geneva, beginning

the week of Oct. 22, to give demonstrations of their products and capabilities.

Those demonstrations will continue each week for the next four weeks.

Thursday, the county panel overseeing the development of the system also said it would open up the demonstrations to anyone in the public who wishes to attend.

The demonstrations will be considered legal public meetings, requiring proper notice to be posted, as the meetings will include a number of Kane County elected officials and Kane County Board members.

For years, officials associated with the various offices that operate within the Kane County court system, including the state’s attorney, judges, public defender, circuit clerk and others, have partnered to create a new electronic document management system for the courts.

They have said the cur-

rent system is out of date, inefficient and dysfunctional, costing taxpayers money needlessly.

The county’s Public Safety and Judicial Technology Commission, which includes the heads of those various county offices, earlier this year solicited proposals from software vendors capable of designing and installing the new system.

A true price tag has yet to be hung on the project, as the county officials have said they are waiting until the vendor evaluation process is complete to more firmly estimate the cost.

To date, the county has committed about $6 million over the next few years to help pay for the work, using mainly existing sales tax revenue and other existing revenue sources to avoid the need to borrow or raise taxes.

The county panel intends to select vendors in late December or early January.

CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 is reminding parents to monitor postings on their children’s social media accounts in light of accusations that a man posed as a St. Charles East High School student on Facebook, according to a statement the district emailed parents Thursday.

The Naperville Police De-

partment has arrested Erik Hakala, 37, on charges that he posed as a 15-year-old East student named Mike Evans on Facebook, according to District 303. Hakala reportedly used his fake account to have explicit conversations and exchange photos with other Facebook users in the area.

According to District 303, there is no record of Hakala ever attending its schools, and

there are no students named Mike Evans at either of the high schools.

Police are recommending that parents of high school students in St. Charles, Batavia and Oswego review their children’s Facebook friends to see whether they have been in contact with a Mike Evans, according to District 303.

Parents who discover their children were in contact with

Mike Evans through Facebook or through a cellphone application called KIK are asked to preserve all conversations and photos their children might have exchanged with him, according to District 303.

Comedy show will benefit Batavia Access toy program

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Chicago comedian Patti Vasquez will be the featured comedy act Saturday as part of the “Comedy For Access Toys” fundraiser at the Batavia Moose Lodge, 1532 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be bought at the door.

The evening’s activities also include a 50/50 raffle and silent auction, with proceeds helping support the Batavia Access toy program, which will distribute toys to needy local families before Christmas. More than 500 families from the greater Batavia community last year received toys through the program.

Vasquez is known for her one-woman show, “Lipstick Mom,” as well as her WGN Radio show and being part of the “My Life Is A Joke” show on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

“They can expect silly and fun stories about my family and me,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez is one of five Chicago female comedians featured on the “My Life Is A Joke” show.

“It’s kind of a documentary because they air it in bits and pieces,” she said.

“The producers Patti were looking Vasquez for someone who had experience, and they wanted someone who told heartwarming stories and stories about struggle, and I kind of fit that mold, too.”

Vasquez also started hosting a show on WGN-AM this year.

“I’m very excited about that,” she said. “They give me a microphone for three hours every week, and we’re going to be expanding to the FM dig-

ital side, so I’ll have a show called the ‘Lipstick Mom.’ ” The show’s name comes from a comment Vasquez heard from someone who attended one of her comedy shows.

“He asked me, ‘You’re a mom? Wow, you look good for being a mom,’ ” Vasquez said. “The idea is, yeah, I’ve got kids, but I can look good.

It might take me a little more elastic and lipstick, but I can get there.”

She loves interacting with the show’s listeners.

“I had listeners call in about their ‘worst firsts,’ their worst first date or their worst first job or their worst first car, and people call in with their stories, and I love hearing them,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez said Chicago is a good breeding ground for comedians.

“We might be cynical, but we’re always looking for the better things,” she said.

“We’re always trying to look at the positive side.”

Residents can have wider driveways

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Residents in North Aurora now will be allowed to have wider driveways.

Village trustees on Monday approved new rules allowing residents to widen their driveways to 30 feet within their property line. Previously, driveways were limited to a 20foot width.

A driveway has to be set back no less than five feet from the closest property line. The new rules are in conjunction with a decision by the village to allow homeowners to store utility trailers as if they were recreational vehicles. Trustees on Monday also approved those new rules.

North Aurora Community and Economic Development Director Mike Toth said the change in the driveway width

was necessary because of a village requirement that recreational vehicles be located behind a solid six-foot fence.

Recreational vehicles also must be parked on a hard surface.

“If the village requires recreational vehicles to be located behind a solid six-foot fence, and the maximum width of a

residential driveway is not to exceed 20 feet in width, a conflict is created by minimizing and/or eliminating the ability to create a hard surface drive leading to the side or rear yards,” Toth said.

Toth said the village will be able to regulate utility trailers because they will be treated like recreational vehicles.

Andersson will seek GOP nod for 65th District seat

nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Longtime Geneva resident Steve Andersson on Thursday announced his bid to represent the 65th District in the March 2014 Republican primary.

Andersson who is serving his second term as the Geneva Public Library board treasurer, made the announcement in front of the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva. He is seeking the seat after current State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, announced that he will not seek re-election.

In addressing his supporters Thursday, Andersson outlined his stance on key statewide issues, which included solving the pension crisis, drawing more businesses to Illinois and establishing term limits for politicians.

dersson suggested that a state with lower taxes, a balanced budget, a working pension system and flexible planning will entice businesses.

Andersson, 49, is a partner with the law firm of Mickey, Wilson, Weiler, Renzi and Andersson, P.C., out of Aurora. Within that firm, he has represented numerous municipalities, including Sugar Grove, Montgomery and Hinckley. He is married with two children.

He said the library board is the only other public office he has held, aside from being a precinct committeeman. He said he brings a “reasonable” approach to government and hopes to help solve problems by simply not spending more than the state takes in.

An idea, I believe most people would agree with, which is simply to be reasonable – to use reason, logic, ethics and good judgment in government,” he said during his speech. “It is not to engage in bitter partisan bickering. Kaneland receivers go deep

Knights receiving corps showcases balance, quality depth this season

MAPLE PARK – Balance and quality depth are hallmarks of this year’s Kaneland football team, and nowhere does that hold true more than in the Knights’ receiving corps.

As the unbeaten Knights prepare to host Yorkville tonight, the Foxes will be the latest opposing defense that must try to figure out which poison to ingest against Kaneland’s multipronged passing attack.

“It’s pretty exciting because I don’t think we really have a weak link on the receiving corps,” Kaneland senior receiver Brandon Bishop said. “I think everyone’s doing their job, and [quarterback Drew David] has a lot of guys to rely on. Everyone’s putting in the work every day.”

Bishop is one of three Kaneland receivers with more than 300 receiving yards to his credit, and five Knights targets have more than 100 receiving yards through six weeks.

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly has overseen some elite No. 1 receivers in his days as Kaneland’s coach and offensive coordinator. While this year’s group lacks a Casey Crosby or Quinn Buschbacher, it compensates with a multiple of attractive options.

David said the Knights are able to put defenses “in a bind” with their depth. Bishop (20 catches, 434 yards, two TDs), John Pruett (21 catches, 345 yards, five TDs) and Dylan Nauert (19 catches, 318 yards, one TD) have emerged as the Knights’ big three, with junior receiver Connor Fedderly and senior tight end Tyler Slamans also regularly in the mix.

“This might be one of the deeper ones that we’ve had, where there’s not one guy catching 70 balls and the second receiver’s only got 50,” David said.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys that are all even, and a bunch of guys that I really trust a lot, so it’s really nice.”

Bishop has played receiver since sixth grade, and said his greatest progress at the position has come in

Even after standout running back Jesse Balluff was lost to an ACL tear, the Knights – behind an imposing offensive line – have remained committed to run/pass balance.

“The corners and linebackers can’t really just concentrate on the pass,” Bishop said. “They have to also look for the run, so it’s helping the receivers get open, and helping Drew make easier reads this year.”

Fedderly said the array of quality receivers makes for ideal competition in practice.

“We put in different personnel packages, so for some of the packages we have, there’s only a couple receivers, and it’s a fight to see who’s going to be those two receivers,” Fedderly said.

“Everybody wants to be on the field all the time but … with the different personnel things that we do, it creates a competition.”

Fedderly is enjoying the season greatly, and not just because the Knights have won handily each time out, while extending the program’s regular season winning streak to 34 games.

For the first time, he’s been able to directly mentor his son, Connor, during games. Connor Fedderly was on varsity as a sophomore but was

shelved with a collarbone injury most of the season.

“I’m always coaching him when he’s at home, we’re always talking about stuff, so all the way through, we’ve always been able to talk football,” Fedderly said. “I just haven’t been on the field with him. “ … I remember the days when we won the second state championship (in 1998), with Connor just running down on the turf,” Fedderly said. “He’s always been around the team. He’s been a ball boy ever since he could carry one of the bottles or whatever. It’s pretty gratifying to see him really be a positive part of the team and being able to make plays out there.”

This might come as a surprise to the ACC crowd, but Marmion coach Dan Thorpe called St. Francis “our archival.”

“It’ll be an emotional evening,” Thorpe said of Marmion’s senior night.

That also holds true for the Spartans (3-3), in desperate need of a win to stem a three-game slide.

COACHING SPOTLIGHT

Batavia coach Dennis Piron thinks the outcome of tonight’s Batavia-North game will come down largely to in-game, tactical adjustments, based on how well both teams know each others’ tendencies by Week 7.

“I’m very pleased with our preparation,” Piron said. “It’s an opponent we’ve been able to see live a couple times and know quite a bit about, and I’m sure they know quite a bit about us this time of season.”

PLAYOFF WATCH Wheaton Academy (3-3) visits St. Edward (4-2) tonight, and a strong case can be made that it’s a mustwin for both teams, considering the Warriors and Green Wave each have powerhouse Marian Central left on the schedule, and St. Edward also must travel to St. Francis.

“They know it, we know it,” interim Warriors coach Brad Thornton said of the playoff implications.

“We expect it to be a great game.”

A sense of urgency, especially on North’s part.

Unless North can upset Batavia, the North Stars can do no better than 5-4, which could lead to postseason heartache for the North Stars considering North isn’t faring especially well on playoff points, based on strength of schedule. All three of the teams North has beaten (Plainfield Central, Elgin, Streamwood) are 0-6.

“You can’t ignore it,” North coach Rob Pomazak said. “One of our goals is to make the playoffs. [The players] know that 6-3 is automatic in, and 5-4 is kind of putting it in the hands of the football gods on the points we have. We know our strength of schedule has some teams that haven’t fared very well so we know [tonight’s game] is important. … 1-0, 1-0, 1-0 the next three games is what the goal is.”

Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron is practically giddy about his defense basically being at full strength for the first time all season.

Defensive tackle Ryan Minniti is expected back tonight and several of his fellow starters have rejoined the action in recent weeks after the Bulldogs were hit with a rash of injuries a few weeks back.

“We’re going to kind of be able to do our whole thing on Friday night on defense,” Piron said. “It’s going to be fun.”

Piron said the depth that was cultivated in the temporary absence of players such as linebacker Anthony Thielk, defensive linemen James Millette and Minniti, linebacker Donovan Kilker and safety Brandon Dean will be beneficial in

emboldening the Bulldogs to go deeper on their rotations.

Batavia must contend with a North offensive line that is considered among the best in the area, and senior quarterback Erik Miller and senior running back Evan Kurtz are expected back after sitting out last week.

X-factor

North’s increasing depth at running back could keep Kurtz (106 carries, 821 yards, 13 touchdowns) fresher down the stretch.

In Kurtz’s absence against Streamwood, sophomore running back Dom Sidari rushed for 126 yards in his varsity debut, and Pomazak said Sidari will remain up with the varsity team. Junior Nick Edlund is another viable option in the backfield for the North Stars, whose leading receiver is Ball State-bound tight end Garrett Johnson (15 catches, 177 yards, three TDs).

Best-case scenario for the Bulldogs

Veteran offensive coordinator Mike Gaspari, quarterback Micah Coffey and Co. aren’t easily fooled, which should come in handy tonight against a North defense that throws more looks at an offense than most defenses.

“We’ve seen everything they do, just with different teams,” Piron said. “So are you able to adjust and are you able to do the things you have to do, play in and play out? There might be some times Micah might have to change a call because of something that they’re in.”

Piron said North’s defense might be as strong as any of the defenses the Bulldogs have encountered on the season but running back Anthony Scaccia (110 attempts, 770 rushing yards) and the

Bulldogs’ versatile passing game present large challenges for North.

Tonight’s game is the start of a twoweek stretch against the St. Charles schools for Batavia. Piron hopes the games – including a tough, road atmosphere tonight – help sharpen the Bulldogs for the postseason.

“Everything about these next couple weeks is a lot of fun for our team,” Piron said.

Best-case scenario for the North Stars

North somehow keeps up what has been a remarkable streak.

The North Stars have yet to concede 100 yards to an opposing running back this season, Pomazak said, a pattern North could be hard-pressed to extend with the explosive Scaccia in the house.

Pomazak said he feels good about North’s gameplan for Batavia but, referring to the Bulldogs’ overall talent, noted “there’s a reason they’ve been the top dog the last couple years.”

This game will take on playoff intensity with North’s sense of urgency and Batavia aiming to hit its stride as the postseason nears, not to mention protect its lead in the UEC River.

Both teams have terrific running backs and defenses capable of playing at a high level, but the Bulldogs have been much more prolific in the passing game. Unless North’s offense is able to make Batavia pay for zeroing in on Kurtz and Co., it could be another hard loss for North to stomach in a season that’s already had too many of them.

The skinny: St. Charles East’s season is at somewhat of a crossroads. The Saints have lost two of their past three games and also face substantial injury challenges.

Standout Michael Candre (foot injury) is the latest Saints linebacker to be sidelined, and receiver AJ Washington (groin injury)

is among the other seniors who will not play on senior night at Norris Stadium. The Saints, however, should be able to regroup against winless Streamwood, and coach Mike Fields is zeroing in on improved lineplay as the path to long-term recovery.

“Our offensive line really has got to step up,” Fields said. “We really have not been able to run the ball efficiently. I think we’re averaging like 82 yards a game [rushing], and that’s just not acceptable.” Fields said senior running back Erik Anderson is in line for more carries after being used as a receiver last week. Fields would not commit

to a starter at quarterback; Mitch Dupuis relieved fellow senior Jimmy Mitchell late in the Geneva game.

Extra point: East’s third-down defense was poor last week, another point of emphasis. “[Geneva] completed nine, third down conversions in the first half,” Fields lamented. “I told [Geneva coach Rob Wicinsk] he needs to go to Vegas – you don’t get that in a high school football game, no matter what the situation, so I give them a lot of credit.”

Cadets coach Dan Thorpe is looking for a sharper effort tonight in the aftermath of last week’s impressive win at Aurora Christian. The Cadets, though, are dealing with the loss of their second starting offensive lineman to an ACL injury – offensive tackle John Gauthier tore his ACL leading up to the season, while center Andy Matthews did the same in the Aurora Christian game.

“It impacts three positions because now we’re down our center, [Luke Juriga] has to move from guard, so now we go from our 255 pound, athletic, running guard, we move him to center and he’s not as good a center as he is a guard, and then obviously a guard replaces Juriga who’s not as good as Juriga, and Juriga can’t play defense because we only have one center.” Marmion’s defense shined last week, with senior defensive lineman Joe Talbot proving adept at run-stuffing in short-yardage situations.

The skinny: Eagles freshman QB Ben Weerts is slated for his first varsity start in replacing the injured Austin Bray, who is likely to miss at least the rest of the regular season with a separated shoulder.

Going to a freshman might seem drastic, but Eagles coach Don Beebe thinks Weerts is capable of giving the team solid play without having to move one of the team’s receiving weapons, such as Brandon Walgren or Noah Roberts, to QB. “He’s going to be fine,” Beebe said of Weerts. “To kind of put it into comparison, he is better than Austin was when [Bray was a freshman]. He’s going to be a pretty nice little quarterback for us in years to come.” Defensive end/tight end Jackson Carpenter also remains sidelined with a separated shoulder for the Eagles.

Extra point: Coming off the Marmion loss, Saturday’s game with IC Catholic Prep could be key for Aurora Christian to avoid a slide with powerhouse Montini looming next week.

The skinny: Wheaton Academy has either been blown out or blown out the opposition each of the first six weeks, a trend that interim coach Brad Thornton suspects could come to a close tonight. “That’s one of the things that has kind of been unusual and concerning a little bit is we haven’t been in a game in a fourth quarter, and St. Edward definitely has,” Thornton said. “It’s going to be a full, four quarter game I’m expecting on Friday night.”

Extra point: Thornton said the Warriors’ health is on the upswing with the recent returns of impact players Nathan Lopez (quarterback-turned receiver) and running back John Gemmel, who missed a game with a mild concussion.

Burlington Central (2-4, 2-2 Big Northern East) at Richmond-Burton (4-2, 2-1 BNC East), 7 p.m. today

Last week’s results: Burlington Central beat Marengo, 27-0; Richmond-Burton beat Rockford Christian, 42-7.

The skinny: Central coach Rich Crabel said a receiving corps led by senior Ian Napiorkowski has to be able to beat single coverage for the Rockets to succeed against Richmond-Burton’s defense. Of course, strong QB play is an important piece of that equation, too, and Crabel said Central is likely to use both Parth Patel and Casey Matthews at QB tonight.

Extra point: Crabel said having running back/defensive back Adam Skirmont and Trevor Davison – who plays the same positions – back from injuries has bolstered competition in practice.

Last week’s results: Geneva beat St. Charles East, 35-21; Elgin lost to East Aurora, 25-22.

The skinny: Geneva’s confidence is swelling after three straight wins against Larkin, St. Charles North and St. Charles East. “We might be little bit over our skis, believing a little too much, but that’s OK,” Geneva coach Rob Wicinski said. “That’s better than where we were at the beginning of the season. I didn’t even think they thought they could get out off the huddle.” The Vikings’ offense was dynamite early in the wins against the St. Charles teams, allowing the Vikings to play from ahead and manage the clock in the second half. Against reeling Elgin, Wicinski is simply looking for focus, asking that his players “don’t slop around.” A win would make the Vikings playoff-eligible after Geneva missed the postseason last year for the first time since 2003.

Extra point: Noting he’s lived through his share of extended losing streaks at both Geneva and Niles North, Wicinski said he was happy for East Aurora to snap its 44-game, program losing streak last week against the Maroons. “You don’t want to wish [that long a losing streak] on anybody,” Wicinski said. “For them to persevere and win their Super Bowl, that’s just huge.”

Sectionals figure to pick up the pace for golfers St. Charles North senior Jessica Grill admitted to being “all golfed out” when teammates dispersed to watch Alexandra Harkins and Larisa Luloff of the Crystal Lake Central girls co-op compete in a medalist playoff Wednesday afternoon.

In the next breath, Grill assured the affliction was only temporary, the product of a six-hour round at the Class AA Prairie Ridge Regional.

Given the natural streamlining process of cutting from regionals to sectionals, athletes and coaches figure the pace of play will improve Monday at the AA Rockford Guilford Sectional at Ingersoll Golf Course.

“The girls had to be patient and really kind of grind for that whole round [Wednesday],” North Stars coach Chris Patrick said.

• The St. Charles East girls advanced four individuals to Ingersoll after finishing fourth in the team race. That was two slots behind the North Stars and one behind the top-three cutoff.

“It was basically the whole team, so it won’t be that much different,” said Saints senior Darby Crane, who was part of East’s team regional championship as a freshman in 2010.

The roles have reversed these days, as Saints freshmen Reagan Stanton and Kacie Gaffney join sophomore Mary Ellen Combs in accompanying Crane to Ingersoll.

Crane and classmate Caroline Kulig, the Saints’ lone seniors, considered themselves big sisters to the group.

• Returning to the scene of

the Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament held less than one week earlier, boys golfers from East, North, Batavia and Geneva hailed their league once more Tuesday.

That was easy to do considering the regional host Saints won the team title at St. Andrews in West Chicago, with fellow sectional qualifiers Geneva and North in close pursuit. Three Batavia athletes qualified as individuals for the 3A Naperville Central Sectional, as well.

“I think it shows that we’re a solid golf area,” said Saints senior Luke Molloy, the medalist with a 76. “Most people are good enough to break 80 almost every time, although it didn’t happen [Tuesday]. I think the area has just got some good golf,

good programs.”

“I think we can make a mark,” added Bulldogs senior Jacob Piechota, “and hopefully some of our Upstate Eight teams can make it to state and maybe all three of our individuals can make it to state if we play really good.”

• Burlington Central’s recent mound of medals is getting pretty high. In the past two weeks, senior standouts Jenna Kurosky and Matt Weber have been the top individuals at the Big Northern Conference meet and their respective regionals.

Kaneland boys soccer rips injury-riddled Rochelle

editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The first varsity soccer game for Rochelle’s Brian Garcia was a real baptism by fire.

Kaneland peppered the freshman Thursday as the Knights won the Northern Illinois Big 12 East contest, 4-0.

“He did a very good job for the first time. He wasn’t nervous at all,” Rochelle coach Keith Lamb said. ”He was [nervous] on the way over but once I think he got into the game, he calmed down.”

Because of injuries, Garcia is the fifth keeper this season for the Hubs.

A long day started early for Rochelle (3-12-2, 0-7-1) as the Knights scored their first goal just 20 seconds into the contest.

Tyler Siebert kicked the ball in from the right side of the post after receiving a cross-net pass from Ignacio Toscano.

“I took the ball down the line, left mid and I sprinted down to the corner and put into the box,” Toscano said.

“Siebert finished. He capitalized on it.”

“That’s what we normally work on at the beginning of

the game,” Siebert said. “We go up and pressure with high intensity and try to get that first goal right away.”

It then took Kaneland (7-5-3, 4-2-2 NI Big 12 East) 15 minutes to score their next goal. They increased their lead to 2-0 with 4:34 left in the half.

After battling defenders swarming in front of the goal, Toscano booted the ball in.

“It was kind a fluke, but it went in,” Toscano said of the score. “It seemed like we didn’t know what happened, but I got the last touch and it bounced across the line.”

Toscano and Siebert reversed roles on the third score, combining for a score 30 minutes into the second half.

“I got a ball in from Siebert and put in,” Toscano said of his second goal. “He returned the favor.”

Arsim Azemi scored the final goal with 3:12 left to play.

Garcia blocked a shot with his body that bounced back and hit Azemi, who was in front of the net. The forward quickly booted the ball back toward the goal and past Garcia.

“Kaneland did a very good

job of moving and passing the ball,” Lamb said. “We were not able to compete with that.”

“It wasn’t the prettiest of wins,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “We really need

to finish when we have the opportunity. It’s kind of been the storyline all season.”

Kaneland’s midfield stymied Rochelle as most of the action was on the Hubs’ side

of the field.

“Obviously we dominated. They didn’t get too much on us,” Parillo said. “Possession was probably about 8020.”

AURORA – Gavin Sanchez scored two goals and had an assist Thursday as the Marmion boys soccer team remained unbeaten at home for the season with a 3-0 win against Plainfield Central.

“He’s been in great form of late,” Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro said of Sanchez. “He’s been involved in most of our attack, whether getting assists or goals. He’s playing very well right now, and he’s playing left wing.

He was playing attacking mid, in the center, at the beginning, but we’ve moved him to the left side, and he’s been great for us.”

Luke DeSimone also had a goal on what turned out to be an emotional senior night for Marmion (12-6-2).

Senior Flynn Collins, whose broken jaw ended his season early, made a cameo at the start of the game to be able to take the field for a final time before quickly

being substituted out. He received hugs and well-wishes from his teammates.

“It was a nice way to say bye to the season for him,” Del Toro said.

Though leaves are mostly green, fall is all around Even though the leaves are mostly still green, there are signs of fall everywhere.

The first reminder came in the form of an email from “Curly” Burr.

Bringing an immediate smile, the screen revealed a reprint of the classic “Injun Summer,” which appeared in the Chicago Tribune for decades.

John T. McCutcheon, an editorial cartoonist, first contributed the illustration and narrative in 1907 and from 1912 until 1992 it was featured each October, falling to pressure that it defamed Native Americans.

What brought my smile was the recollection of encountering the picture and the tale at the knee of Grandpa A who, like

year, particularly in the hills and woods.

My knowledge of such woods dates back to the days when Mother Florence grabbed her knife and basket and went into the woods for wild mushrooms.

A classic story remains even today. Hoping to break in “Tweet” Weber, our bartender, as her rookie assistant, they climbed over a fence to the private woods of a local farmer. Things were going well until Mom saw a bull approaching them from the nearby farmyard. She whispered to “Tweet,” now elevated to protector, “What should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t know about you, but I am going to bend over and eat grass!”

Jan Ellis, my most prodigious mailer of things of interest and humor and a ’56 buddy, sent along a series of clever yet grotesque carved pumpkins.

Professor Van Thournout, also from our high school class, replied to the forwarded images with the observation that he recognized a few but discreetly did not mention any names.

This weekend, there’s the Scarecrow Festival all over town and the start of “Scaregrounds,” created by Steel Beam Theatre out at the fairgrounds.

In my mind I have created a scarecrow – a guy in a suit with a nametag that says “Washington Politician.” These guys are really scary!

ST. CHARLES – The Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness organization had its third “Walk for the Goose” 5K on Sept. 14 in St. Charles and raised more than $2,000.

Proceeds from the walk support the group’s Veterinary Outreach Program. The program is in collaboration with the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association and engages veterinarians, whose medical discipline involves promoting and protecting public health and ensuring an environment free of animal-borne diseases, in addition to caring for animals, according to a news release.

The former Miss USA ambassador 2012, Alyssa Paulsen, served as emcee for the event.

Bill and Carol (Goetz) Jahns of Elburn celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in June and July by traveling through Alaska and Hawaii. Their adventure began in June when they traveled to Seattle via Amtrak train; and, from there, drove to Vancouver, Canada, where they boarded the Disney Wonder ship to cruise the inside passage of Alaska. In July, they continued celebrating by taking their grandson, Tucker Jahns, on a three-week trip to the Hawaiian Islands.

The couple was married March 9, 1968 at St. Michael’s United Church of Christ in West Chicago.

They first lived on Timbercrest Drive in Elburn.

Bill Jahns is semi-retired from his own business – Jahns Structure Jacking Systems in Elburn.

Strom is a 1995 graduate of Burlington Central High School in Burlington and is a 2001 graduate of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He received a master’s of infor-

Ram 1500 offers multiple choices to customers

Full-sized pickup trucks are back in fashion today and buyers face lots of options in that market.

That market is comprised of GMC, Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Ram. Each truck-maker offers multiple renditions of its product based on powertrains, bed and cab sizes, drive componentry and interior and exterior trim.

Ram is emblematic of the industry and has almost 40 models from which to choose in the 1500 series alone. That is not counting the 2500 or 3500 Rams, which will add another 25 or more to the list of choices.

A 2013 Ram 1500 was tested recently and, in price, it mimicked the market. Although a Ram price ranges from $23,600 to more than $46,000, the tested Ram 1500 was a crew cab Outdoorsman SLT model, which slid into a pricing slot of $37,300.

As late as the end of August, the average transaction price for a 2013 Ram was $36,213. Thus the SLT’s $37,300 almost matched what buyers are shelling out, on average, for a Ram. The four-wheel-drive crew Outdoorsman SLT has four doors, room for six in two rows, P265 17-inch tires, chrome wheels, a full-size spare stored underneath, a 66-inch-long-by51-inch-wide box and a 5.7-liter, 395-horsepower Hemi V8 engine mated to an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission.

Besides power windows, door locks, exterior heated foldable mirrors and front seats, there is a power sliding rear window opening to the bed.

The powertrain can tow a 10,300-pound trailer. Payload is 1,659 pounds. Ram engineers call this “best in (light duty truck) class. With the turning of a dial on the dashboard, the driver can shift on the fly from two-wheel-drive to low or high four-wheel-drive.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper averaging 13 miles per gallon city and 19 mpg city and 15 mpg combined. The EPA rating was right on or close to the mark as – during the test week – the Outdoorsman SLT averaged 15.8 mpg in combined city, highway and Interstate 94 driving. The 26 gallon fuel tank takes regular unleaded gasoline.

The bed is lined by a spray-in composite material to prevent scratches to underlying metal.

It is divided, has post holes, has a step-up bumper, a fairly light removable and lockable tailgate and cargo lights mounted on the cab. The box is roomy enough for 4-by-8-foot sheets of plywood.

Flanking the bed are Ram lockable boxes. They run over the wheel wells for most of the

length of the bed. Each box is 51 inches long and 10 inches wide.

Depth varies from 8 inches to 16 inches. Depth depends on proximity to the wheel wells.

The boxes are hinged, lockable and the interiors have a hard plastic finish. These boxes are nifty for tossing in the occasional hammer or 12 pack of soda.

Since it is a huge vehicle, entry and exit (height from ground to cab is 20.9 inches) can be difficult, which is why grab handles are provided at strategic locations on all four doors.

Space inside the cab will please those with large frames.

Leg room in the rear is almost as ample as that in front (officially 40.3 and 41 inches, respectively). A center armrest can be flipped to form a seat back so three people can sit in the front seating area.

While the competition depends on leaf springs in the rear, the Ram does not. It has

shock absorbers inside coil springs front and rear, and the independent suspension system is enhanced by short and long arms in front and multilinks in the rear. Stabilizer bars are heavy duty and placed front and rear.

For the work it has to do, Ram engineers decided to forego typical truck leafs for the coil springs. The ride is easier on the body. An optional $1,595 air suspension system at all four corners is available.

Trailer sway control, hill start assist and electronic stability control are standard.

After the unlatching, the hood raises itself by hydraulic pistons.

Besides the power features, amenities include remote keyless entry, remote start system, upgrade cloth trim, air conditioning, cruise control, sound system for AM-FM-satellite radio, compact disc player

and auxiliary hookups. Also there are 12- and 115-volt power outlets, rear dome light with on-off switch, glove box lamp, under-the-hood lamp and rubber floor mats. These are necessities in a work truck.

Warranty coverage is five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain and three years or 36,000 miles limited with 24hour roadside assistance.

In 2012 (the latest full calendar year), Ram controlled 17.9 percent of the pickup truck market in the United States. GM (GMC, Chevrolet) controlled 35.1 percent and Ford 39.4 percent. Trailing were Toyota at 6.2 percent and Nissan at 1.3 percent. Ram will introduce a six-cylinder diesel to the U.S. market in early 2014. It is a powertrain option that competitors, at the moment, do not have.

Tom Hanks’s superb performance in ‘Captain Phillips’ anchors thrilling tale

Those readers who habitually skip past the review to see how many stars a movie has earned might be muttering to themselves around now: Didn’t she just give four stars to “Gravity?” And now “Captain Phillips?” Has she gone that soft?

No, the movies have gotten that good.

And “Captain Phillips,” a taut, finely crafted, superbly acted maritime thriller, is just one of a wave of fabulous films currently heading our way. It’s autumn, my friends, a time of falling leaves and soaring cinematic standards.

Hallelujah, and pass the buttered popcorn.

The two principal artists involved with “Captain Phillips” go a long way in explaining why it works so well: Paul Greengrass, the exacting British director behind such masterpieces as “Bloody Sunday” and “United 93” – as well as a couple of movies with the name “Bourne” in the title – is behind the camera. And Tom Hanks – who needs no introduction – is in front of it, in this case playing a modest, hard-nosed merchant mariner who in 2009 was hijacked and kidnapped by Somali criminals while his ship was delivering commercial goods, water, food and fuel to Kenya.

As “Captain Phillips” opens, Richard Phillips is driving from his pretty Vermont farmhouse to the airport, chatting with his wife, Andrea (Catherine Keener), who sends him off with a perfunctory, “Have a safe trip.”

It won’t be, as anyone knows who recalls the harrowing five-day ordeal of the real-life Capt. Phillips, who

Tom Hanks stars in the film “Captain Phillips.” calmly ensured the safety of his crew and then continued to keep his wits about him while being held captive in a cramped lifeboat.

“Captain Phillips” is based on his memoir of the event, which was widely reported in newspapers and on television.

But Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray (“Shattered Glass”) go one step further, introducing viewers to the poverty, desperation and cynicism that converge to lead four Somali fishermen to go to work for a warlord, attacking container ships and absconding with their cargo.

High on khat and armed to the teeth, the particular thieves in question are led by a charismatic young man named Muse (the terrific newcomer Barkhad Abdi), who, once he boards the enormous Maersk Alabama, vies with Phillips for control. “I’m the captain now,” he declares at one point.

hews to a familiar visual style, immersing viewers in the rhythms of Phillips’ day and familiarizing them with the labyrinthine vessel that doesn’t resemble a boat as much as a vast floating office (like Peter Weir’s “Master and Commander,” “Captain Phillips” offers a fascinating tutorial in the humming, hive-like organization of a working sea craft). Once two tiny skiffs show up – first as a radar blip, then as bobbing, barely distinct omens of oncoming danger – the filmmakers keep “Captain Phillips” on its even keel, allowing the tension to ratchet up organically, rather than by way of self-conscious editing or manipulative music cues.

What larger messages “Captain Phillips” conveys – about globalization, consumerism and the clash of radically different supply chains – are delivered deftly rather than with ham-handed polemic; the fact that Phillips was delivering food aid to Africa may be seen by some

as a grievous irony and by others as a cruel case study in how foreign aid exacerbates dependence and poverty throughout the continent.

Greengrass’ straightforward style not only keeps “Captain Phillips” from didacticism, it is perfectly suited to its protagonist – a bespectacled, by-the-book guy who runs a tight ship, literally and metaphorically. Hanks, who has made something of an art of playing real-life characters, submerges his usual Everyman charm and instead plays up his Everyman blandness, allowing Phillips’ sober, quick-thinking character to emerge through behavior rather than stirring speeches or swashbuckling set pieces.

The result is a study in movement and action that is as purely cinematic as “Gravity,” a film that may be more far-reaching in its location and visuals, but portrays isolation, dire straits and the wages of manifest destiny with similar white-knuckled intensity.

“Captain Phillips” is such an impressive dramatic achievement that it comes as a shock when it gets even better, during a devastating final scene in which Hanks single-handedly dismantles Hollywood notions of macho heroism in one shattering, virtually wordless sequence.

That moment, as purely emotional as what went before has been kinetic, makes “Captain Phillips” yet another Greengrass masterpiece.

Teens won’t get far in life without table manners Dear Abby: I have acquired two teenage stepsons. They are good young men, mature, responsible, active in community service and good in school and sports.

My challenge is their table manners. They were never taught any! They use their utensils like shop tools, lifting food using fork and knife together to transfer huge bites from plate to mouth.

They use a bread knife to cut a pancake as if it were a tough steak. They slouch over the table to get their faces as near the plate as possible, while leaning on the table with one or both elbows.

Their mother shows no concern about their uncouth manners. I’m worried that when they eventually go out into the world, they’ll be perceived as having no class when they are actually nice young men. Their ignorance of table manners could cost them relationships, jobs and promotions. Dear Abby: I am almost 30, and when we have family get-togethers several times a year, it seems like they make a point to leave me out of pictures. My mom and sister lost quite a bit of weight recently, and my brothers and cousin are attractive people. It seems like they’re trying to keep the “fat one” out of the photo, and it hurts my

It’s possible your mother and sister are so proud of their weight loss they want to show it off. (There are ways to pose family members in photographs so their weight isn’t apparent.) A problem with depression is that quietly brooding solves nothing, and it often causes people to overeat. Because your depression is chronic, please consider discussing it with your health care provider because interventions are available.

Antiviral medicines can help ease shingles pain Dear Doctor K: I’ve been diagnosed with shingles. What can I take for the pain?

Dear Reader: Shingles, also known as herpes zoster or just zoster, is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Once you have had chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus remains in your body’s nerve tissues. It is inactive, but it can be reactivated later in life. This causes shingles.

When the virus reactivates, it causes a burning or tingling sensation in the affected areas. A few days later, the virus causes a blistery rash. Your affected skin may be so painful and sensitive that you cannot even stand having your clothing touching the area.

One patient of mine with shingles on his forearm switched for several weeks to wearing a short-sleeved shirt to the office, something he never had worn to work before.

If you’re over age 50 and have had shingles pain for less than three days, the current recommendations call for doctors to prescribe antiviral medicine to kill the virus that causes shingles.

(If you are younger than 50 and

The two medicines recommended most often are famciclovir (Famvir) and valacyclovir (Valtrex). These antiviral medications not only help shorten the days of pain that you have, they also help reduce the risk of long-lasting shingles pain, a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia.

The pain that accompanies shingles can be intense. If the antiviral medicine does not provide enough relief, you can take additional pain medicines. Start with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen. If necessary, your doctor will prescribe more potent pain medicines; these include codeine, tramadol and (when the pain is very severe) oxycodone.

Some studies led doctors to add corticosteroid drugs such

as prednisone to the treatment of shingles. However, as more studies of this treatment have been completed, it looks as though these medicines may offer more risks than benefits.

Shingles usually takes seven to 10 days to run its course. Blisters may take several weeks to disappear completely. The duration of pain is highly variable. Most people’s pain decreases within two or three months.

However, a small number of people develop post-herpetic neuralgia and continue to have pain for many months, or even years.

Other treatments for post-herpetic neuralgia being evaluated, but as yet unproven, include capsaicin, topical lidocaine and acupuncture. A shingles vaccine is recommended for most adults age 60 and older. Even though treatment is effective, nothing beats preventing the condition in the first place.

Brother should pay for his bad behavior Dr. Wallace: My 15-year-old brother had to stay with my husband and me for a week while my parents went out of town. He is an honors student and considered a “good kid,” so we were glad to have him for a visit – that is until we received our telephone bill. It seems that Little Brother had been calling a porn line and discussing sex with a young lady who did everything possible to keep him on the line so her “company” would get more money. In six days, he made a ton of calls for a lot of money. There is little chance that my parents can afford this amount of money and, of course, neither can my brother even though he does receive a $15 weekly allowance.

I called the phone company and explained that our underage brother was responsible for the calls, but they said it didn’t matter who made the calls; we were responsible for the bill. We can pay it, but it will put a crimp in our budget. Since I know for sure that my parents can’t pay for my brother’s misadventure, should I even bother to inform them? All my brother had to say was, “Sorry, it won’t happen again.” I’m sure it won’t!

Let them know that you and your husband will pay the bill, but that you expect your brother to reimburse you by paying you a percentage of his allowance on a regular basis. Tell them you expect full payment even if it takes several years.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and have been dating for about a year. In that time, I’ve gone out with three guys, but only

Dear Nameless: No matter whom you date, Dad will probably find some reason to complain about him. That’s actually a fairly common trait of fathers, who see their prime role as protecting their daughters. They also remember how they were as young men!

The only way Dad’s going to relax is for him to get to know the guy you’re dating. The better he knows him, the more likely he will be to accept him. Invite your parents to various activities with you and your date. A school athletic event or a Saturday lunch would be a great start. In time, Dad will start saying good things about the guy you’re dating, if he’s as nice as you say he is.
