Maple Park family launches #HobbitMovieLastRequest Stouffers want dying father to be able to watch upcoming ‘Hobbit’ movie before release

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – A social media campaign launched by a Maple Park family will attempt to provide a “last request” for the father, Scott Stouffer.

His youngest daughter, Jessy Stouffer, has launched an effort to somehow allow the family to view the upcoming “Hobbit” movie – “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” – before its Dec. 17 scheduled release date. She said her father is suffering from a type of cancer, neuroendocrine, and he might not survive to see the movie’s release.

Jessy Stouffer, 21, a student at Northern Illinois University and a 2011 graduate of Kaneland High School, said she has been surprised at the response to her Twitter hashtag – #HobbitMovieLastRequest, and a YouTube video.

“I’ve been told we’re in three or four different countries, with articles in different languages,” she said. “I

didn’t think it would make it past the United States. That, to me, is big.”

Jessy Stouffer said her father is a fan of the movies, and it is a family tradition to

watch the “Hobbit” or “Lord of the Rings” movies during the holidays.

Her brother, David, 28, and sister, Katie, 27, are part of the effort, as well.

The social media campaign is meant to get the attention of someone who can make it happen.

“It would honestly mean a lot,” Jessy Stouffer said.

The Kane County Chronicle left a message with an official at Warner Brothers, but that message had not been returned as of late Thursday afternoon.

Jessy Stouffer said her father, 57, is unaware of the effort. She was hoping to make it a surprise, but she said she understands the attention surrounding the campaign might make that difficult. She said her father, like her and her siblings, graduated from Kaneland.

He is an elder at the First Baptist Church of Sycamore.

The church’s pastor, Bill Badal, said Scott Stouffer is known for his love of the “Hobbit” movies, as well as “The Three Stooges.”

Badal said Scott Stouffer also is known for his work with parishioners who are sick.

“He showed up at their bedside,” Badal said. “Sometimes the elders will allow the pastors to do that, but he took that upon himself.”

Badal said he was aware of the social media campaign, noting that “it’s been going somewhat viral.”

COVER STORY SCARECROW FEST CONTINUES TO GROW St. Charles event expands offerings for 29th year

CHARLES – The west part of downtown St. Charles isn’t the only place this weekend to catch all of the action at the 29th annual Scarecrow Fest, its organizers said. This year’s fest will feature an activity zone east of the Fox River in the municipal parking lot north of the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St. in St. Charles. The zone will have a different theme for each day of the three-day festival, which begins today and concludes Sunday, said Jason Pawlowski, festival liaison and marketing manager at the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

“It’s a good opportunity to utilize some of the activities that people like on both sides of the fest,” Pawlowski said.

The activity zone’s first theme will be “Farmin’ Friday,” which will include Gardeners Gardening Demos, a petting zoo and food to buy from the Windy Acres Farm Fruit and Veggie Stand. A doughnut-eating competition will be at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. during “Spooky Saturday,” along with a Halloween Costume Sale with various items to buy, Pawlowski said.

The final theme day is “Sunday Fun Day,” which will include henna tattoos, balloon animals and a 1:30 p.m. ice cream eating contest sponsored

by Hilton Garden Inn. The staple of the festival, of course, remains the 100-plus scarecrows featured in the west part of downtown St. Charles. Scarecrows created by businesses are set up in the Veterans parking lot on Third Street between State and Cedar streets. Scarecrows from all the other categories – mechanical, traditional, whimsical, children’s and family – will be at Lincoln Park on Main Street between Fourth and Fifth streets in St. Charles.

She said she had so much fun creating an anti-bullying scarecrow with her friends in 2013 that she decided to enter the Scarecrow Contest’s family category this year. She said she and her friends are in a friendly competition to see who can get the most votes in the cate-

gory this year. Winners will be announced at the fest’s closing ceremonies at 4:30 p.m. Sunday on the Cadence Health/Northwestern Medicine Stage at Lincoln Park.

The Wilbur siblings said their favorite parts of the fest are the scarecrows and the carnival rides. Another favorite for families is the opportunity to stuff and dress up their own scarecrows to bring home at the

The festival will have live performances all weekend long with acts roaming the entire fest, on the Downtown Entertainment Stage at the municipal parking lot and at Lincoln Park. The final act will be during the closing ceremonies, where Ryan Caldwell and his band, Fight With Monsters, will give the debut live performance of the song “What’s in a Scarecrow?”

“This song will actually end up serving as the actual anthem for a yearlong marketing campaign called ‘Year of The Scarecrow,’ ” Pawlowski said.

The park district will receive the Helen Doria Arts in the Park Award for its extensive and dedicated collaboration with the St. Charles Arts Council to provide numerous art-related opportunities throughout the greater St. Charles area, the release states.

Holly Cabel, the district’s director of parks and recreation, will accept the award Oct. 24 at the state association’s eighth annual Best of the Best Awards Gala at the Wheeling Park District’s Chevy Chase County Club in Wheeling.

“We are very excited to receive this award,” Cabel wrote in the release. “It’s great to see arts and culture throughout St. Charles. To enrich lives is the park district’s mission, and we are happy to work with the St. Charles Arts Council to bring more events to the public.”

The St. Charles Arts Council produces two all-city/allarts events called Charlie’s Center for the Arts each year, one in September for professional artists and another in March for student exhibitions.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles-based Three Fires Council’s new Scout executive is veteran Scouter Joseph E. Wiltrout, the council announced this month in a news release.

Wiltrout will begin working at the St. Charles office on Nov. 3. He replaces previous Scout Executive Matthew Ackerman, who served from June 2006 to July of this year.

Ackerman resigned to pursue other opportunities, said Sue Crosson, the council’s communications and marketing director.

“I’m excited to be joining Three Fires Council,” Wiltrout wrote in the release.

“The council has a long tradition of providing great Scouting programs. I aim to build on that tradition.”

Wiltrout’s appointment

was made by a 12-member volunteer search committee, who praised Wiltrout’s background as an Joseph E. Eagle Scout Wiltrout and his history working for Boy Scouts of America.

“When we saw his friendly-yet-commanding presence in a social environment, we knew Joe was our guy,” Keith Miller, co-chairman of the search committee, wrote in the release.

“I want to get back to the day where we have good policies in place to create not just more jobs, but quality jobs and jobs with opportunities,” Senger said. “I feel bad for the kids in college. They have big college loans, but there is nothing for them when they get out.”

Every year, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce holds a Harvest Celebration to gather community members to celebrate a chamber member that has displayed “an outstanding commitm e n t a n d George dedication to Scheetz the chamber’s mission, vision, and values,” according to a news release from the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

“George is a perfect example of someone who embraces our community and unselfish-

Job growth and immigration reform are among the issues in the race for the 11th Congressional District.

State Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, is challenging U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, for Illinois’ 11th Congressional District seat. The 11th District includes North Aurora, Aurora, Naperville, Lisle and Joliet.

Foster said he supports comprehensive immigration reform. He is a co-sponsor of the H.R. 15 reform legislation introduced in the U.S. House.

Passing comprehensive immigration reform would add a much-needed economic boost nationally and in Illinois, Foster said. “The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that H.R. 15 would reduce the deficit by $900 billion over 20 years,” he said.

When they started, online shopping didn’t exist, and there were no nearby Menards, The Home Depot or Lowe’s locations, Sandie Vlach said.

“It was just us,” she said.

Now, she added, there is “no market for the specialty store any more.”

Soon, there will be one fewer such shop. The Vlaches plan to close their 8,000-square-foot showroom at 2312 W. Main St. by the end of November as they downsize their business and move away from a 45-hour work week.

“It was time,” Tom Vlach said, noting business from new construction also has declined.

Although Sunshine Lighting’s physical presence on West Main Street will be gone, the Vlaches said they will continue doing business through

GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell announced in a news release Wednesday the recent Prescription Drug Take Back program was a success in Kane County.

The Kane County rally point designated by the Drug Enforcement Administration collected 2,593.9 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs that are no longer in circulation for potential abuse.

The coroner’s office contributed 119 pounds to that collection.

The office became an official DEA collection site for the disposal of prescription drugs this year.

Proper disposal is important because studies have shown prescription drug abuse promotes heroin use and addiction, the release stated.

“There are some DEA prescription drop-off points in the county, but my goal is to promote this program heavily, and get as many sites as possible in the county,” Russell said, according to the release. “From the results, it’s apparent that the word is spreading and people are listening. That’s very positive.”

His office accepts prescription drugs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

It is in Building E on the Kane County Government Center campus, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

Goodbye hearty handshake; hello Ebola wave As a baby boomer, I grew up in the 1950s and ’60s, when a handshake served as the customary greeting. My dad taught me to grasp the hand firmly, not tightly, and look the person in the eye.

After 20 or 30 years, I got pretty good at it. I even added my own invention, a smile, also firm, not tight.

Then came the 1970s and the viral disaster novels and movies, beginning with Michael Crichton’s “The Andromeda Strain.”

“It’s only a movie,” everyone comforted each other.

“It’ll never happen.”

Then it did. In 1976, the Ebola virus disease (EBD) struck Southern Sudan and Zaire.

No one in America blinked, however, until 1995, when Richard Preston’s “The Hot Zone” graphically described

EBD’s symptoms and gave Americans a heads-up that the disease had landed in Virginia.

That year also released more realistic and frightening films: “Outbreak” and “12 Monkeys” convincing us to cover our noses and mouths with a hand or fist, preferably our own, when coughing and sneezing. Over the next 15 years, film viruses outdid even death, turning their victims into zombies and vampires.

Dracula was turning over in his grave. Or, rather, coffin.

Perhaps spurred by blockbuster novels and movies depicting a viral, apocalyptic end to malls, rush hour and Netflix, health-and-wellness centers took action. Instead of sneezing or coughing into our hands, we should rather turn

Simultaneously, medical gurus focused their attention – and ours – on hand germs.

Open a door, touch a toilet handle or grab a remote control, and your palm promises more infectious diseases than a CDC freezer.

To combat the microscopic vermin, we were advised to wash our hands every five minutes while singing the national anthem, the birthday song or, if you wanted them really clean, “Don Giovanni.”

Subsequently, people became wary of shaking hands. Quick waves, along

with fist and elbow bumps, flourished, embarrassed admissions we’d given into the bed-ridden Howard Hughes no-touch, gloves-on policy we once ascribed to an old man’s paranoia.

Now we learn about the three-foot rule separating the healthy from suspected EBD carriers. That, plus the 24-7 news cycle picturing health care workers wearing yellow astronaut suits, will surely put the hug on life support.

Thus, EBD threatens to accomplish something no hate group, no fringe political party and no foreign terrorist menace could do: make us afraid of ourselves, make us suspect of friends and family, and make us question our expressions of love.

Now that I’m finished writing this column, time to

soak my pen in ammonia, hose down my keyboard with a power washer and sterilize my printer by dropping it into boiling water like cooking a green lobster. Writing’s a dirty business.

IMF sends urgent message about global recovery BLOOMBERG NEWS If anyone was unaware of the challenges facing the global economy, the International Monetary Fund lays them out well in a new report. The extraordinary stimulus efforts of some of the world’s largest central banks haven’t been enough to produce a healthy global recovery and could be setting the stage for another financial disaster.

There’s plenty governments can do to address both problems.

The IMF expects advanced economies to grow by just 1.8 percent this year and 2.3 percent in 2015 – slower than its forecast of three months ago and well below the 20year pre-crisis average of 2.9 percent. At the same time, it worries that central banks’ efforts to boost demand with very low interest rates

and other measures may be setting investors up for a fall, particularly in U.S. markets for risky corporate debt.

Why is growth so slow?

Partly because the burden of stimulating growth has fallen too heavily on central banks – and some of them have been more effective than others.The Federal Reserve acted boldly; it’s now close to ending an unprecedented bond-buying program that leaves it holding more than $4 trillion in securities.

The European Central Bank has been more timid; as a result, the threat of deflation in the euro area is growing. The ECB needs to adopt Fed-style quantitative easing without further delay.

But central banks can’t do it all by themselves. Debt burdens, long-term unemployment and poor infrastructure are holding back growth in many developed

countries. In countries that can afford to borrow, such as the United States and Germany, careful investment in transportation and communication systems could pay for itself – boosting growth by enough to reduce public debt burdens.

In fiscally challenged countries such as Greece, household and corporate debt relief could free up funds for consumption and investment. Many countries in the European Union also need to make hiring easier and staying unemployed more difficult.

Financial booms and busts are inevitable – but systems can be made more resilient.

It’s crucial for banks and other market participants to finance their activities with more equity, which absorbs losses in bad times and limits financial contagion.

Edlund makes most of year with Eagles St. Charles North transfer excelling at running back for Aurora Christian

URORA – Nick Edlund detoured from discussing his seamless transfer from St. Charles North to Aurora Christian to a topic with far more potential for turmoil.

The bygone backyard game “Crush the Carrier” featured Edlund, his older brother, George, and his younger brother, Christopher, and unquestionably molded each sibling into a football player.

“We would all take turns running the ball, and whoever tackled one of us would be the next ballcarrier, and we would just play that for hours,” Nick Edlund said. “And since we’re all running backs, I think that somehow transitioned onto the field a little bit, just that relentless, never-die-easy attitude, I guess.”

As Edlund concludes his prep career – an erstwhile North Star turned Eagle – he finds himself channeling his childhood passion as a high school senior.

Mimicking an uninhibited kid, he led prayer during his second summer practice with the team. Edlund felt compelled to just jump right in to a group he hardly knew at the time.

He greets his backfield duties with the same fervor.

In Week 6, Edlund’s 162 yards and a touchdown nearly helped stir an ACS upset of pe-

The injury report hardly resembles a laundry list now, as Eagles coach Dave Beebe happily reports a clean bill of health entering tonight’s Chicago Catholic White game at St. Laurence.

“Compared to last year, it’s not even close. Last year was awful,” Beebe said. “This year, we’ve been very blessed. … We’re full-strength right now, it’s great.

Especially after going through the CCL, including St. Rita, that’s a heck of an accomplishment for these kids. It really is.”

In other injury developments, Marmion coach Dan Thorpe delivered this gem when asked about the team’s health on the heels of a 49-13 home loss to Fenwick.

“Our egos were smashed,” Thorpe said, “but no injuries.”

WANTED: OFFENSE After averaging 32 points in a pair of nonconference victories, Marmion has managed just 37 points in its past three contested games. The Cadets had a de facto bye during Week 5, as no replacement could be found after St. Francis de Sales forfeit the rest of its season.

The Knights have made the playoffs in 18 of the past 19 seasons, missing the field only in 2007. Should Morris fail to qualify, it would be the first time the school has had losing records in consecutive seasons since 1973 to 1976. Before 2013, the Redskins last missed postseason play in 2000.

The marquee matchup Kaneland endured a pair of ultimate rarities last week. Its 14-7 road loss to Sycamore extended the Knights’ losing streak to four games, its first such skid since 1993. In addition, the game marked the first time the Knights scored in single digits in the regular season since a 21-7 loss to then-Western Sun Conference foe Glenbard South in Week 6 of 2009.

The Knights ended the 2013 season by losing, 45-8, to Joliet Catholic in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Although many current players filled minimal roles then, the Knights still stand by the leadership of veteran varsity seniors Connor Fedderly (wide receiver) and Isaac Swithers (running back). Kaneland outgained Sycamore, 225-198, last week, but lost the turnover battle by a wide 4-to-1 margin. Rebounding and rekindling the attack behind junior quarterback Jake Marczuk is imperative.

“They will spread the field. They run a lot of five-wide sets and like to put it in the air a lot,” Redskins coach Alan Thorson said. “But, they do have the ability to run. Their running

back is pretty good, and their quarterback is elusive, so we have to make sure we keep an eye on him.”

Baerenklau, who shifted from cornerback to safety as Swithers sticks solely to offense as he feels progressively better after an early-season knee injury.

Best-case scenario for Morris Morris’ rushing attack of Keagan Sobol, Jake Walker and dual-threat quarterback Griffin Sobol channels its inner Michael Kurtz – the Yorkville senior who gashed Kaneland for 310 yards and four scores in Week 4 – consistently breaking into the second level of the Knights’ defense and beyond.

“Yorkville ran the ball pretty well on them, and the best thing for us to do to control their offense is keep our offense on the field,” Thorson said. “We have to have some good, long drives, and when we have them, we have to finish them with some points. Kaneland has big-play potential, and we have to control that. The best way to do that is to keep their offense off the field.”

No stranger to facing talented running backs this season, the Knights defense limited Sycamore’s Dion Hooker in a relative sense. Take away his 63-yard, third-quarter touchdown run and Hooker managed just 64 yards on 29 carries.

Any continued turnaround starts with the front seven, where offensive linemen Jake Gomes (left tackle), Danny Hammermeister (right guard) and Logan Strang (left guard) do their part in the linebacker rotation. Tristan Kinder, a 6-foot-3, 276-pound junior, provides a force as a two-way lineman.

For everything concrete about what the Knights and Redskins must do to become playoff-eligible, there still is the element of the wild card.

“I can also promise this,” Thorson said. “We won’t hold anything back. There’s nothing to hold back for. It’s win or miss out on the playoffs from here on out. So, if there’s a trick play or something that we think might work in a given situation, you will see it.”

Morris failed to recover a surprise onside kick to open last week’s game at DeKalb, the first bad break in an eventual 42-0 loss. That defeat followed two straight overtime losses, against Sterling and Yorkville.

Thorson said his players have short memories. Fedderly and his staff also have worked to harness the Knights’ focus. With an improved ‘D’ and a home crowd holding steady, Kaneland wins a close one, earning the right to know what’s at stake once again going forward.

“We don’t get into a whole lot about [what is next],” Fedderly said. “We’ve discussed it, we’ve brought it up, but this is just about us trying to take care of this week. So we’re not going to get into that stuff. All the other stuff doesn’t matter if we don’t take care of business this week.”

Kaneland rallies past DeKalb

BY TRAVIS ZUELLIG editorial@kcchronicle.com DeKALB – The Kaneland girls volleyball team slowed DeKalb’s momentum in time to earn a three-game, conference victory.

The Knights bounced back in Game 2 in a big way and shut the door on any hopes of a Barbs upset Thursday in an entertaining, back-and-forth 16-25, 25-18, 25-16 Kaneland victory.

Kaneland (16-8 overall, 5-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) made a lot mistakes in the first game – mostly on kill attempts and passing.

But Knights coach Cyndi Violett’s team regrouped to sweep the season series.

“I think we had a slow start at first, I don’t know if it was nerves or their crowd,” Violett said. “Then, we started to be ourselves.”

Six different Barbs (15-12, 1-5) recorded kills in Game 1, including four from Kayla Schafer and three apiece from Heather Bemis and Hannah Oehlberg.

“I think we started off

strong. We had momentum and then we lost track of what we needed. And, that was the biggest key,” Barbs coach Kyle Milborn said.

“We got away from our game plan, and you have to stick to the plan if you want to win matches.”

Kaneland trailed the entire first game. In the second game, with the score tied at 6, the Knights finished the game outlasting the Barbs with a 19-12 run, never trailing again.

“I think we were a little timid at first,” Kaneland outside hitter Ellie Dunn said. “I think we came out with the mental attitude that we need this. We need this for our record and we need to do well.”

Dunn and Riley Hannula finished the game with three kills apiece.

The duo finished the match with 11 and eight kills, respectively.

Violett said she was not shocked by their performances.

“Between them and Anna Senese [12 service points], they are our senior leaders,”

Violett said. “I have all of the confidence that they are going to step up and do what they need to do. They have been doing it all year long and it wasn’t a surprise tonight.”

The Knights never trailed in the final game. Dunn and Hannula combined for nine more kills to put finish off the match.

Hannah Nauert (11 service points) and Hollie Fedderly each finished with 16 assists.

Dunn said fewer mistakes made the difference in the end.

“I think it was less errors on us. In the beginning, most of their points were on our errors,” Dunn said. “We cleaned it up and made them make their own errors.”

DeKalb was led by Schafer, who finished with nine kills.

Bemis also had nine kills and Oehlberg ended the contest with four kills.

“We are kind of getting complacent after the first game. I thought Kaneland did a very nice job in games two and three to fight back,” Milborn said. “We just got complacent and didn’t execute.”

MAPLE PARK – Playing just his second match after gaining eligibility, Kaneland sophomore Carl Thorbjornsen – who moved from Norway in September – scored three goals Thursday, leading the Knights past Morris, 6-3.

Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said Thorbjornsen had to sit out 30 days according to IHSA rules and only became eligible earlier this week.

Thorbjornsen’s father lives in the Kaneland area and was in attendance Thursday.

Parillo joked that Thorbjornsen, a forward, “was probably thinking ‘Wow, this American soccer is easy.’ ” “We knew he was good,” Parillo said. “Today he just had a great day. It was fun to watch. I think he scored three goals in six, seven minutes, something like that. He was on fire today, and we needed

NOTEWORTHY Another Waldoch clicking for Geneva soccer The Waldoch name is alive and well in the Geneva soccer program.

Geneva girls soccer four-year stalwart Annie Waldoch graduated in the spring but her younger brother, Matt, is making an impact for the Vikings this fall. A sophomore forward, Matt Waldoch scored a goal against St. Charles East in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with the Saints.

Matt Waldoch played on varsity as a freshman but said his confidence has risen substantially this season.

“I felt last year I was very timid, especially in my attacking play,” he said.

“I was kind of deferring to the upperclassmen, but now I’m starting to take a bigger role with the team and I think it’s definitely helped my play and my confidence.”

Matt Waldoch is the second-youngest of five siblings. Annie Waldoch is the lone sister in that bunch, but Matt Waldoch said his rapport with Annie was especially influential in his development.

“We have a full-size goal in my backyard, just always being out there, she’d be the one who wanted to play with

me, even if we were fighting most of the time,” he said. “It was always nice to have a sibling I could always go to, go take some shots on, she would take some shots on me. It was good to have that, someone else who really had a love of soccer in my family.”

But, again, this was a total team effort for us. We would have liked to get the win, but it just wasn’t in the cards.”

Former St. Charles resident stands ‘tall’ in TV show When it comes to television, I pretty much avoid primetime offerings except for “Good Wife,” “Blue Bloods” and “Mike and Molly.”

Got tired of celebrity interviews, boosting their latest products and dysfunctional families.

So, it is mostly a combination of “Law and Order” (and “SVU”) reruns, football and news once a day (unless there is a pending crisis) since the themes are predictable, and I do not appreciate some reporter standing in the rain or snow to affirm that the weather is bad.

Now comes my friend, Pam Weber Waters (recall she is the gal who has been to so many national parks and works to inform folks who are especially tall about the hidden dangers of Marfan syndrome.)

Pammie’s son Cory now lives and works in New Orleans. Some may remember him from school days in St. Charles or his work at Pineview.

To make a long story short (forget I said that), Cory’s girlfriend knows somebody from “Horror Story”

staff. At that time, they were searching for individuals with certain body styles or distortions. Seeing that they were seeking a “tall guy” she told them their search was over and presented Cory, who was hired.

Pam says that Cory told her the poster was in People magazine.

AURORA – Marmion Academy senior Conroy Unruh, son of Brad and Cathy Unruh of Batavia, will be recognized in a ceremony at Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, for earning the highest advancement rank the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts – the Eagle Scout award.

Conroy Unruh is a member of the Three Fires Council and Troop 3.

Unruh completed 22 merit badges and organized a blood drive, recruited donors and conducted a blood drive within his community. Unruh’s goal was to collect 25 pints of blood. He carried out his project with the support of the Aurora Heartland Blood Center and succeeded with 26 pints of blood.

Unruh was chosen to be a member in the Order of the Arrow and was recognized as a Scout who best exemplifies the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life. He also provides encouragement for others to live with ideals, states a news release.

Unruh’s high adventure trips include the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, Superior Hiking Trail and the Maroon Bells 4 Pass Loop in Colorado.

Unruh is a member of Annunciation Church in Aurora and is a cantor and Eucharistic minister at Marmion Abbey. He is active in cross country, swimming, choir, the fishing team and theater at Marmion Academy.

Injections to relieve stenosis pain not always warranted Dear Doctor K: I have spinal stenosis. Will steroid shots help with pain relief?

Dear Reader: Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the open space in the spinal canal. This squeezes nerves, causing pain in the lower back, buttocks and legs. I have spinal stenosis, so I know about it both as a physician and a patient.

Medicines and physical therapy are usually the first treatments for spinal stenosis pain. If these treatments don’t work, doctors often recommend spinal injections.

Spinal injections generally include a corticosteroid to reduce swelling and inflammation and a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, to numb the area. Most doctors consider the injections to be safe as long as proper precautions are taken and the injections aren’t repeated too often.

But a new study calls into question just how good these injections are for spinal stenosis. The study included 400 people with back and leg pain from spinal stenosis.

They were randomly divided into two groups. One group received either one or two injections that contained a steroid plus lidocaine.

The other group got injections of lidocaine only. Lidocaine is a short-acting anesthetic that would not be expected to provide lasting relief.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Six weeks later, there were no differences between the groups in their levels of pain or function.

People in both groups reported improvement, but those who received both drugs did not report any more improvement than those who received lidocaine alone.

This study has made me much less likely to recommend spinal injections of corticosteroids for lower back spinal stenosis. The greatest danger is infection. There are other conditions that cause low back pain, however, where spinal injections of corticosteroids may have some value.

More research is clearly needed. A larger study might be able to tease out whether certain groups of people might be more likely to benefit from spinal injections. All we know from any randomized trial, even well-done studies like this one, is what the reaction to the treatment has been for the average patient in the study. It remains possible that one subgroup of patients in the study – those with more severe narrowing of the spinal canal, for example – might really benefit from the treatment.

You can also try: • Analgesics, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) • Anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) • Muscle relaxants • Heat • Physical therapy or stretching If all else fails, you might need to consider surgery. This is a major operation that is usually regarded as a last resort.

As for me, I have been fortunate. Regular exercises to strengthen my back muscles have kept me nearly completely free of symptoms. That also has been my experience with patients.

Very few have needed to consider surgery, and relatively few have received spinal injections of corticosteroids.

What if that does not remain true and my symptoms return?

And what if all the other treatments I’ve mentioned (short of surgery) don’t give relief? Would I consider spinal injections of corticosteroids? Yes, I might. But I wouldn’t be terribly confident that I’d made the right decision.

Of all of your columns, is there one that stands out most in your memory? If so, I’d like to see if I could remember it, too. Also, tell me why this particular column ranks at the top. – Richard, Dyer, Indiana Dear Richard: I’m a little late in responding to your request because it took some time to come up with a most memorable column, but I finally narrowed it down to No. 1 after having a Top 10. I probably chose this one because, while teaching high school English, I was also the varsity basketball coach.

I hope you enjoy this column that appeared in newspapers in March 1999: Dear Teens: Isaac Gildea is the starting forward and leading scorer of the College of the Redwoods basketball team. But he has one small problem. He doesn’t know what to call one of his teammates – a scrappy little fellow who averages two points and plays about five minutes a game.

All the other players call him Frank, but to Isaac that just didn’t sound right, although at first he tried doing so. That’s because the little guy happens to be Isaac’s father.

Frank Gildea initially played for College of the Redwoods, in Eureka, California, 19 years ago, but had to drop out of school. His wife had just given birth to a son – Isaac – and Frank needed to take a job to support his family.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace This year, Frank returned to college and made the basketball team fair and square.

“He can flat-out play,” said Coach Bill Treglown, who ought to know. He’s the same coach Frank had 19 years ago, when he averaged 10 points a game and played “ferocious” defense. U.S. college athletic officials say the two are believed to be the only father-son duo ever to play basketball side by side at the collegiate level.

The story has excited the community.

Two years ago, 25 fans would attend College of the Redwoods home games. Now more than 1,000 fans jam the small gym for a game. And it doesn’t hurt that the team is winning. For the first time in over two decades, the team has won the conference championship.

Does Isaac, who averages 22 points a game, like having his father as a teammate?

You bet he does. When his father enters the game, the tempo often picks up. Frank loves the challenge and says that words can’t describe the feeling of playing college basketball alongside his all-star son.

Wow, how do you ever top that? You don’t!

And Dad, who is 41, the father of four children and a dedicated husband to his wife, Linda, can still dunk the ball.

We hold a void occasionally at the bridge table. When you have a void and a decent suit fit, usually it will be better to play in that suit than in no-trump – as in this deal.

I agree with South’s opening bid, even though a two-club response would have been a tad uncomfortable. A good partner would have shown a major.

Here, though, North responded with a game-invitational three diamonds. (Some players would have preferred a game-invitational two no-trump. Best is a two-diamond inverted minor-suit raise, if you employ that gizmo.)

Over three diamonds, South decided that his void justified heading for game. His threeheart rebid initially promised a heart stopper and suggested a black-suit weakness for no-trump purposes. North, with both black suits held, rebid three no-trump.

Then South judged well not to pass.

The play was interesting in five diamonds. West led a low club, and East covered dummy’s card as cheaply as possible. Declarer ruffed, played a trump to dummy’s queen, cashed the heart ace, played a heart to his king, ruffed a heart in the dummy, ruffed a club in his hand, ruffed his last heart (East discarded a club), ruffed the club nine, played a spade to dummy’s king, and ruffed the club king. West, down to two spades and two diamonds, overruffed and cashed his high trump, but then had to lead away from the spade queen into South’s ace-jack. Cool!
