Kane County plans for court security fee hike

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County leaders are preparing to nearly double the fee that pays for court security.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick on Wednesday told Kane County Board members that a resolution about the increased court security fee will be submitted at the next Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting, which is set for Oct. 15.

A cost study determined the county may charge up to $47.90 – a $22.90 increase from what state law previously allowed, Onzick said.

Gov. Bruce Rauner recently approved a bill that allows counties to set a court security user fee based on the actual costs of providing court security, such as guards, bailiffs and metal detectors. It takes effect Jan. 1.

County Board members lobbied for the ability to increase the fee from $25, as the

amount of revenue generated couldn’t support the full cost.

According to county documents, the number of court cases eligible to pay the court security fee has decreased from 72,485 in 2010 to 51,838 in the most recent 12-month period, creating a projected $305,000 shortfall for the current fiscal year.

Pending board approval, the county will cover the shortfall with a transfer from the public safety sales tax

fund. Balancing next year’s budget for court security depends on the County Board approving the fee increase, Onzick said.

The County Board is expected to approve a resolution to place the 2016 draft budget on public display Oct. 26 at its next regular meeting.

The initial $3.2 million budget gap was closed without increasing the property tax levy, Chairman Chris Lauzen said.

Sugar Grove kite festival offers all-day fun

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Like the song made famous by “Mary Poppins,” the Sugar Grove Park District is hosting its first kite festival, Let’s Go Fly a Kite, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday at Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove.

Chicago Kite representatives will feature their kites and flying skills all day, with the community welcome to fly kites in a dedicated community kite-flying area.

The event includes free kites to the first 350 children, courtesy of event organizers

Renee Dee and Sarah Goss of Southwestern Real Estate.

Weather permitting, hot air balloon rides will be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. for $10 a person.

Food, such as pizzas on wood-burning grills and grilled cheese sandwiches, will be available. There will be live music.

Activities for children and families include a chess tournament, bags tournament, parachute play, in-line skating demo and open skate, Pokeman Challenge and a candy drop at 1 p.m.

The kite festival at the Geneva Park District last year inspired Sugar Grove resident Rachel Muckerheidi to form a committee to do a similar festival in her town. The Let’s Go Fly a Kite festival will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove.

She said she contacted the Geneva Park District, got contact information for Chicago Kite and began working on it.

Muckerheidi, along with co-committee members Dee and Karen Pritchard – who is the recreation superintendent for the Sugar Grove Park District – started planning a year ago.

“We clearly made it a much larger event,” Muckerheidi said. “We have never done anything like it, but we are happy to try it out. We’re hoping for 1,000 people.”

The committee members raised $11,000 from local businesses to fund the event, Muckerheidi said.

“We literally made all our money from the generous support of local businesses,” Muckerheidi. “We had no bake sales or fundraisers.”

Muckerheidi credited Sugar Grove Trustee Mari Johnson with fundraising.

“I got a few sponsors,” Johnson said. “I honestly give [Muckerheidi] all the credit. She’s the one who really pushed for it.”

“We have lots of farm fields for parking, if we need it,” Dee said.

Pritchard said the park district was happy to help support the festival.

“It is a wonderful thing,” Pritchard said. “It’s turned out to be a huge undertaking.”

Other features Saturday include the Sugar Grove Farmers Market, children’s face painting, a bounce area for $10 an hour or $15 for an all-day

bounce bracelet; and Serena’s Song will provide free tethered hot air balloon rides to those with physical disabilities, as the balloon is wheelchair accessible.

The Sugar Grove Park District will host an official grand opening of Harter Community Park at 10 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting featuring community officials.

Coffee will be provided by Java Plus Café, and doughnuts will be provided by the Elburn Dunkin’ Donuts.

COVER STORY A TRADITION BEGINS Kaneland celebrates first homecoming parade

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Spectators lined both sides of Prairie Valley Street on Wednesday night in Elburn, eager to get a glimpse at the inaugural Kaneland High School homecoming parade.

Students and sponsors representing clubs at the school took part, along with athletes, homecoming court candidates and bands from both the high school and Kaneland Harter Middle School.

The parade drew parents and supporters from throughout the Kaneland district, as well as district officials. Dana and Chris Gould, who live in the Blackberry Creek subdivision on Elburn’s south side, were there to see their children, Vanessa and Andrew, participate. The Goulds said it was an enjoyable experience.

“I think it’s a great tradition to start,” Dana Gould said.

The intention is for the parade to rotate between four villages in the district, starting with Elburn. Next year, the parade is to take place in

Kaneville. Parades then will be staged in Maple Park and Sugar Grove.

Pompon squad members Hannah King, Kaity Eutsler and Hailey Parisek were among the participants. They said they were aware Kaneland previously didn’t have a homecoming parade, and they enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of it.

“I’ll definitely remember it for all of my high school career,” King said.

Penny Blaine on Monday created a GoFundMe page to help her friend, Brandi Leggett, raise money toward the cost of replacing Leggett’s blue 2005 Honda Civic.

As of early Wednesday evening, the page – which is at www.gofundme.com/ s5569jv8 – listed a total of $1,175 raised toward a $1,500 goal.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 5:56 a.m. Sunday for a report of a car fire at the intersection of Cambridge and Cumberland Green drives in St. Charles, St. Charles Fire Battalion Chief Marty Friel said.

The fire was extinguished and determined to be Leggett’s vehicle.

No arrests have been made in connection to the incident, and a cause of the fire has not yet been determined, St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz wrote in an email.

In addition to the well-wishers, Leggett said her friends, her 7-year-old son and her boyfriend, Eric Rezendes, have helped her cope with the incident.

Illinois Audubon Society honors Batavia couple

Marion and Rich Miller of Batavia received the Illinois Audubon Society’s Mary Glenn Kirkland Volunteer of the Year Award at its fall meeting last month.

asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Rich and Marion Miller haven’t been members of the Kane County Audubon long – about four to five years – but that was enough for them to make a difference worth recognizing.

At its recent fall meeting in Springfield, the Illinois Audubon Society honored the Batavia couple with the Mary Glenn Kirkland Volunteer of the Year Award.

The honor came as a surprise to the Millers, who said they weren’t aware of the award when they got the call that they were its next recipients.

“We’re humbled, yes, for sure,” Rich Miller said.

President Bob Andrini nominated the couple, he said, noting it was the first time he recommended members for the statewide honor.

He commended the Millers for their efforts regarding the education about and preservation of chimney swifts.

They spearheaded a project to build artificial chimneys

to help the birds with breeding and migration, and they continue to coordinate volunteers to monitor the chimneys’ use.

“They not only got involved and learned a lot about chimney swifts but got a lot of other people excited and involved in monitoring the towers,” Andrini said.

“The excitement spread.”

The Millers – who make a living as nurses – have since shared their knowledge with various groups, are advising a Girl Scout who aims to build a tower for her Gold Award and administer the Facebook group Chimney Swifts over the Fox Valley.

Marion Miller said volunteering with the chimney swift project was a way for them to give back to the Kane County Audubon. They trace their Audubon membership to the Mooseheart eagles, Rich Miller said, explaining that led them to scope out birds at other locations, including Nelson Lake near Batavia.

“One thing led to another,” he said. “Blame it on the eagles.”

learned Wilson paid for the alcohol with a stolen credit card, Kintz said. He noted Wilson also made purchases with the same card at Binny’s locations in Schaumburg, Downers Grove, Oak Brook and River Grove.

Police traced the crime to Wilson because he submitted an application for a Binny’s discount card at the St. Charles store and used his name and address, Kintz said, adding surveillance footage also was used.

A warrant was issued for Wilson in November 2014,

and he was arrested in Cook County on Sept. 19, Kintz said.

Wilson, of the 2500 block of Cedar Glen Drive, Lynwood, was charged with use of an account with intent to defraud, a Class 3 felony; unlawful possession of a credit or debit card, a Class 4 felony; and theft of more than $500, a Class 3 felony.

According to online records, Wilson appeared in Kane County court Wednesday, and an order was made to appoint a public defender.

As of midday Wednesday, records showed he remained in the Kane County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond with 10 percent to apply for bail.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles man charged in a fatal 2014 traffic crash pleaded guilty Wednesday to a Class 2 felony in exchange for an 11-year-sentence in prison, according to a news release issued by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Joshua E. Spudich, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated driving under the influence causing death, Joshua E. the release statSpudich ed, indicating heroin was in his system.

He must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, according to the release. The release indicates he was given credit for at least 306 days served in the Kane County Jail, where he has been held since his arrest in lieu of $1 million bond.

Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles accepted the plea.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated in the release he hopes the relatives of the woman killed in the crash, 65-year-old Susan Gorecki, feel like they received justice with Spudich’s sentence.

“As most people were celebrating the long Thanksgiving weekend with loved ones, Mr. Spudich chose to observe the holiday with a cocktail of dangerous narcotics,” McMahon stated in the release.

“His selfish decision to take heroin, cocaine and other illegal drugs and then drive – criminal acts by themselves – had violent and deadly results.

He caused immense pain to many, taking the life of a wife, mother, grandmother and sister, robbing multiple generations of her wisdom and love at a time when they were preparing for the Christmas season.”

The accident happened about 2 p.m. Nov. 28, 2014, the day after Thanksgiving.

Spudich was driving a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe south on North Second Street in northern St. Charles when he crossed the center line and crashed into a 2004 Toyota Corolla heading north, driven

by Gorecki, a St. Charles resident.

She was taken to a hospital, where she died as a result of injuries from the crash, according to the release. It was the city’s first traffic fatality since 2010.

Spudich reportedly told police he had ingested heroin at a friend’s house shortly before the crash. According to the release, an analysis of Spudich’s urine sample indicated the presence of heroin, marijuana, cocaine, diazepam and alprazolam. Valium and Xanax are trademark names for the latter substances, respectively.

His driver’s license was revoked at the time of the crash, according to the release.

Spudich’s criminal history includes convictions for battery, DUI and theft from 2010 and 2011, the release stated.

Homecoming hustle and bustle THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel It’s officially fall, and for local high schools, that means homecoming week quickly is approaching or already has occurred. Homecoming is a time for school spirit, community pride and all kinds of fun for students.

Geneva’s homecoming is this week, and – at the time I’m writing this – I’m eagerly anticipating the festivities to come.

One of the most enjoyable activities related to homecoming is dressing up for each day’s spirit wear. “Wake-Up Wednesday” is my personal favorite, because who doesn’t love wearing pajamas to school? I’m especially interested to see what costumes people wear today for “Superhero Thursday.” Although each day’s theme might not be completely up my alley, it’s always fun to see what others decide to wear and take some Instagram-worthy pics with friends!

The big evening events during homecoming week are what really bring the students together and create opportunities for socializing and celebration. The Powder Puff football game always is entertaining – it’s about time my fellow females get to dominate the football field! Attending the pep rally with friends and family is a great way to spend an evening, and not just because there are free sloppy joes and cookies provided at the PTO barbecue.

It’s an awesome showcase of our school’s sports teams, marching band and student body as a whole. Best of all, it’s something for the whole family to enjoy. My little sisters love participating in the elementary school spirit contest to see which school can cheer the loudest. (You might want to bring earplugs for this part of the program!)

Obviously, the homecoming football game is the event the entire community comes out to enjoy. This year, Geneva’s game falls on my birthday, so I’m not

exactly sure what my plans will be for that evening, but some aspects of the game are can’t-miss.

The marching band always puts on a spectacular halftime show.

I remember how one year, while playing a song from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” members of the brass section shot fire out of their instruments – definitely a memorable moment! Also at halftime, the fireworks show is spectacular. Of course, the actual game is fun to watch, as well – let’s hope that the Vikings emerges victorious!

Homecoming week ends with the dance Saturday night. Excitement has been building about this event for quite some time at GHS, with homecoming “proposals” happening in multitudes and girls planning their outfits weeks in advance. In my opinion, some people go way too over-the-top with these different aspects. I’ve witnessed guys asking girls to the dance in ways that are admittedly cute, but so elaborate I can’t even imagine the amount of money, time and preparation that went into them. Save your wallets for prom, guys. And for the girls, what’s the point in spending so much money on a dress you’ll likely only wear once? Don’t get me wrong – I think it’s awesome people are willing to go all out for this special night. But, for me, homecoming is more than just the dance, so I try to focus more on the week as a whole rather than just one specific night.

Homecoming is a wonderful time for students and their community to come together in celebration. For those of you who already had this year’s homecoming, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I’m enjoying mine. I’m lucky to be part of a school and town that upholds its traditions and spirit – not just this week, but every week.

Boehner will be a team player to the end

By JONATHAN BERNSTEIN Bloomberg View A lot of people want the lame-duck speaker of the House to do something he just can’t do. And I’m not talking about the House Freedom Caucus radicals this time.

No, I mean those who believe John Boehner failed to pass immigration legislation last year because of “cowardice,” as the New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin put it, or those who argue, as the New York Times said Tuesday, that he could somehow still get the bill passed before he leaves office at the end of October. A Washington Post article speculated on whether Boehner would find “the resolve” to pass several bills Democrats and some Republicans support.

Look, this isn’t about “resolve” or “cowardice.”

It isn’t about Boehner at all. He’ll push bills most members of the Republican conference want him to move; he won’t act on what they don’t want action on.

Speakers represent their party. If Boehner had tried to move on the immigration measure last year, over the objections of most members of his conference, they would have removed him from his position (as Toobin acknowledges), and almost certainly blocked the bill anyway.

Finesse with food

The Finery & Blacksmith Bar chefs infuse local flavors with global flair

CHARLES – As the country continues to grow and evolve into the confluence of cultures that it is today, it poses the question: What does the American dinner table look like? The Finery & Blacksmith Bar in downtown St. Charles is setting out to answer that question, but on its own terms.

In July, married couple David and Juliette Reyes of West Chicago opened The Finery, sharing the culinary stage as owners and working the kitchen in tandem.

Classically trained in French cooking, the duo has created a contemporary, American menu that focuses on seasonality, finesse with flavors and locally-sourced ingredients.

“We set out to put together a place that was an ode to the American table with a very diverse background,” David Reyes said, adding that his Italian and Spanish roots, as well as his Mexican parents contributed to the culturally-infused ingredients that go into the dishes gracing The Finery’s menu. “It’s a broad spectrum of different cultures that have influenced the way we cook and our menus.”

For David Reyes, cooking has always been a family affair. A zest for food was instilled in him as a child while working alongside his mother in the kitchen and in restaurants owned by his grandfather.

One of his earliest childhood memories of restauranteering was when he would travel in a Ford pickup truck with his grandfather to Fulton Market in Chicago to select “hogs and produce for the restaurant.”

That’s where it started, he said.

After studying culinary arts at Kendall College, where he met Juliette, David Reyes worked in a two-Michelin-star-rated restaurant in France; soaked up the culinary know-how from about 20 other restaurants around Chicago; and traveled the U.S. helping others to fulfill their dreams of opening restaurants, before

The restaurant’s name derives from the historical significance of the building. The location of The Finery & Blacksmith Bar, David Reyes said, was the first blacksmith shop in St. Charles.

“Once we learned the history of the building, we decided on the name,” he said. “We wanted something that denoted the finer approach on dining, and we thought of a name like The Finery, which is the oven that the blacksmith uses to finish off more detailed pieces of metal. I thought that was very suiting.”

The turn-of-the-century building’s rustic yet refined “1920s chic” interior makes way for an eclectic, farm-to-table dining concept in which the quality of ingredients reigns supreme.

“We’re very much about – not necessarily – local and organic, but the right ingredient, and – often – that’s local and organic,” said David Reyes, who sources menu items such as pheasant from MacFarlane farm, and trout from Rushing Waters Fisheries, both in Wisconsin.

Starters, salads, seafood, poultry, meat and pastas grace a seasonal and condensed menu. The chef favorites include the bistro’s staple dish, the Country Pheasant with summer truffle, creamy risotto, confit purse and pesto; Marinated Beets with buffalo mozzarella, spiced candied walnuts, celery puree and an orange reduction; and the American Bouillabaisse with gulf prawn, shrimp, scallop, mussels, whitefish, spinach, marble potatoes, saffron broth, crostini and rouille.

Juliette Reyes, 27, who has worked in Chicago restaurants, such as the upscale Italian eatery Spiaggia, said that with the world being so accessible, people are flocking toward the foreign- and traditional-infused flavors available at The Finery.

“Our generation has access to so much globally nowadays that I think that people have a taste for more than just meat and potatoes, and they want to feel like they are in a comfortable space in their house ... .” she said, while referencing the pairing of the bistro’s traditional Flat Iron Steak and its Argentinian-inspired ancho-chile and chimichurri marinade.

The same painstaking care that went into The Finery’s menu, also went into the restaurant’s list of libations. Chiefly Midwestern-centric brews, hand-crafted cocktails and eclectic wines detail the menu.

A self-proclaimed wine fanatic, David Reyes set out to offer wines that matched the food. The wine list, which was supposed to feature 10 wines by the glass and 25 bottles, has grown to 20 wines by the glass and is approaching 100 bottles, he said.

“All of them have been handpicked and tasted, and we made sure that it was a really good representation of what we were trying to do,” David Reyes said, adding that he sought flavors within various varietals, rather than solely focusing on brands.

The restaurant cellar houses “everything from Alsace Gewürztraminer to a South African chenin blanc,” David Reyes said, while honing in on two wines recently featured in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list – the Emeritus 2012 pinot noir from California and the O. Fournier 2010 malbec from Argentina.

So far, the Reyes’ are grateful for the reception they’ve had from the community, and are “cautiously optimistic” about the future of The Finery.

“We haven’t achieved anything yet,” David Reyes said. “We’ve seen there’s a market for what we’re trying to do, now let’s build on it. Let’s make it into a lot of people from the city coming out to the suburbs to dine. That’s what we’re setting out to do.”

Shakou combines contemporary vibe with Japanese cuisine ST. CHARLES – Within minutes of stepping into Shakou Modern Japanese Cuisine, it was clear that an enjoyable experience was among the top priorities of the St. Charles restaurant.

From the decor on the walls to the overall vibe you feel upon opening the door, it may not be what you typically expect from modern Japanese cuisine.

As my lunch companions and I were seated inside the restaurant at 312 W. Main St., we were greeted by a more than helpful waiter, who was very knowledgeable and more than accommodating to any questions we may have had.

After looking through the number of options, our waiter made some recommendations that prompted our mouths to water.

My lunch companions ordered two types of sushi. Their choices were the Dragon Fire, which on the menu had two symbols for its spicy taste, and the Ocean Drive.

One of my lunch companions preferred the Ocean Drive, while the other had more of a taste for the Dragon Fire.

The Ocean Drive maki ($18) comes with tuna, yellow tail, avocado, cilantro, green pepper and spicy mayo, wrapped in a soy bean paper and topped with freshly squeezed lime juice.

My companion “never really thought of maki being refreshing, but the lime and cilantro in this roll seemed to make lunch a revitalizing experience.”

Shakou Japanese restaurant in downtown St. Charles provides a contemporary setting for sushi and cocktails. the Dragon Fire ($17), which our waiter said was his top choice on the menu, is a butter pan seared roll with crab, cucumber and avocado, topped with spicy tuna, spicy tako, citrus mayo and habanero and unagi sauces.

Needless to say, both dishes were empty upon our departure from the restaurant.

What probably sparked my interest most during my experience at Shakou was the ability to order something other than sushi. Some sushi restaurants have a limited choice outside of their main dishes, but not Shakou.

What grabbed my attention most, which are provided during the lunch

hours, were the Bento Box Specials. I chose to order the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box ($12).

The Bento box came with tiers, if you will, with the top tier in three separate compartments containing the rice, a variety of fried vegetables, and a couple of dumplings in the final compartment.

Underneath was where the grilled chicken breast with teriyaki sauce was located on a bed of freshly sautéed vegetables. Also in the bottom tier, was a small side salad, with a garlic-type dressing with shredded carrots.

The chicken tasted very fresh, and the amount of teriyaki sauce was the

perfect amount to have a long-lasting flavor throughout each bite. I added some of the extra teriyaki sauce to the rice, which made for a delicious taste.

For one with a rather large appetite, even I found myself taking leftovers home.

With his service and quick-witted humor, our waiter made my first experience at Shakou a memorable one. It was hard to leave with anything other than a smile on our faces, all agreeing that there was more than a small chance we would find ourselves back at Shakou for a future visit.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Tucker about her upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: I know that you are touring again after being off the road for

almost four years.

What made you want to get back on the stage?

Tanya Tucker: It’s the fans that got me back on the road.

Tanya Tucker They want to hear more music, and they want to see the concerts.

So, we had to oblige, and get back to work. So, we’re on the road, and Randy Travis let me use his bus. And we’re doing great. We’re having a lot of fun.

Schelkopf: Were you humbled that your fans would want to see you on the road again?

Tucker: Absolutely. It’s very

flattering to me, and it made me feel really good that they haven’t forgotten about me, that they would want me back out there. I guess as long as people want me, I will be out there.

Schelkopf: Was it easy getting back on the road again? Was it like riding a bicycle?

Tucker: No. No, it’s not like riding a bike. There’s a lot of work, and I’m not in my 20s anymore. You just have to kind of pace yourself.

Schelkopf: I’m sure one of the songs you will be performing at the Arcada is “Delta Dawn.” I know that was a hit for you when you were only 13 years old.

Why do you think it connected so well with people?

Tucker: One of the things that amazed me about that song is that youngsters were attracted to it, kids that were under 10 years old. And I don’t know what it was that struck them.

It’s definitely a mysterious song. A lot of people didn’t really know what it was about, and I think you can make your own mind up about what it’s about.

I don’t get tired of singing it, that is what’s interesting.

It still feels fresh to me every time I sing it. And of course it’s the last song I sing during my shows, so I feel I have the crowd up and going by then. It just kind of puts them over the edge.

Schelkopf: Was that overwhelming

to you, to have a hit song at age 13?

Tucker: Well, that’s the other thing. To be singing a song about a 41-year-old woman when you are 13 is kind of different. It was so different that Billy Sherrill didn’t want anyone to know how young I was. He wanted the record to make it on its own, not just because I was 13.

Schelkopf: And you were only 15 when you were on the cover of “Rolling Stone” magazine. Do you see yourself as being a groundbreaking artist?

Tucker: I hope so. I’m told that, from time to time, that I’ve kind of paved the way for other artists.

And whether it’s true or not, it still feels good.

Saints clip Vikings in snug race

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Zach Podl saved the best round of his St. Charles East boys golf career for the home stretch of his senior season.

When it came to the postround interview assessing Wednesday’s feat at St. Andrews Golf Club, Podl followed similar protocol.

Prompted for anything further about the 77 that vaulted him from East’s seventh-seeded player to the third-best round at the Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament, Podl flashed a knowing smile. His fellow Saints, a few paces ahead and touting the UEC River championship plaque, would have been proud.

“My friends wanted me to say this,” Podl said. “Today, the course didn’t make the rules, but I did.”

Podl and the rest of the field navigated what Geneva junior Andrew Abel dubbed a “pretty gusty” day. East (310) edged tournament co-host Geneva (313) atop the seven-team tournament leaderboard and also claimed the overall River title by avenging a Sept. 24 dual loss to the Vikings at Eagle Brook Country Club.

Batavia (328) and St. Charles North (331) were next in the tournament, while both schools tied for third in the overall team standings.

Continuing the snug motif, Geneva freshman Tyler Isenhart topped Abel for River Player of the Year standings, 30.5 points to 27. Wednesday’s medalist round of 2-over par 73 boosted Isenhart, who began golfing at age 7 but “didn’t take it too seriously until last year.”

To be sure, tunnel vision enabled Isenhart to sidestep a four-putt on No. 16 – he teed off from No. 10 – and play 2-under the rest of the way. Isenhart birdied the third and fourth

About an hour before he officially announced it to the crowd, Vikings coach Eric Hatczel summoned Isenhart to inform him he was medalist.

“He’s a really solid player,” said Abel, who shot 78. “Just fantastic. He played really well today.”

Saints junior Daniel Haugen followed Isenhart by one stroke while collecting three birdies during the round.

East boasted five scores in the top nine and six in the top 14, but, by rule, only four count toward the team total.

Sophomore Mason Meadows, a recent junior varsity call-up, shot 79, while Danny Buetow and Jacob Blood both carded 80s.

“I knew coming into today we had to put up a good number as a team, and we had to grind it out,” Haugen said.

“We knew it was going to be windy and we knew it was going to be chilly, but we had to play our best out there.”

Batavia’s scorers were Robert Carr (79), Nick Robinson (80), Andrew Nelson (84) and Sam Glore (85).

Hank Zimmer paced North with an 80, while Nik Janchik (83), Tyler Barton (84) and Alex Gruber (84) followed.

“I was able to accommo-

date for all the different things I had to do, and I just kind of played to the best of my abilities,” Zimmer said. “I had a couple challenges, but I was able to get through them.”

It’s possible each of the Tri-Cities schools could reconvene at St. Andrews on Oct. 12 for an IHSA Class 3A sectional hosted by the Saints.

East, Geneva and North will compete at Tuesday’s Larkin Regional at The Highlands of Elgin, while Batavia heads to the Oswego Regional at Blackberry Oaks in Bristol.

Batavia returns to the scene of last season’s triumph, where the Bulldogs earned the program’s first regional title since 1982.

Robinson tied for medalist honors with a 79 but lost via playoff.

“I have a lot of success there and history, so it’s going to be fun to go back,” Robinson said. “It’s pretty straightforward.”

Jack McDonald, Ethan Dalton and Dawson Peters each shot 81 for Geneva.

“We’re all doing really good right now. We’ve got a good team chemistry going, and it’s good,” Abel said. “I’m happy with how we played today, too.”

Boy, can Podl attest.

“I went out there and I hit my driver straight and I had 28 putts,” he said, “and I can’t ask to do any better than that.”

Receivers free to move about after intense preparation

It’s not that the Batavia receiver doesn’t occasionally experience the annoying cellphone snafu, but rather the avoidance by the Bulldogs’ receiving corps of the word “drop.” Batavia wide receivers coach Bai Kabba banned any variation of the four-letter word.

Completed passes are a big part of the Bulldogs’ offense; and Kabba, a former Batavia multisport standout, wants to eliminate any potential negative thoughts.

“The word ‘drop’ doesn’t exist on game day,” Coffey said. “We received 10 different note cards before the season started, and every week we focus on one of them. It’s something that has motivated us to play hard.”

As part of football’s continued offensive evolution, where spread sets focus on an aerial attack, the importance of solid play from receivers has grown. Summer camps, private lessons with specialized position coaches and voluntary group practices in spring and summer aim to increase receivers’ skill sets.

On a summer weekend, the Bulldogs quarterbacks and receivers will meet to run routes. Without the pressure of defenders, they are building a rapport. Wide receivers can familiarize themselves with the velocity of a pass, the spin on the football and a quarterback’s release point.

Because the delivery of the football needs precise timing, a quarterback can track how long each wide receiver takes to finish a route, how quickly they get into their break – the moment a receiver changes direction – and the location of their preferred catching zone.

“Our summer training allows us to hit big explosion plays,” Coffey said. “The timing is key. You’ve got to develop a trust between wide

While quarterbacks and wide receivers need hours, days or months to get on the same page, St. Charles North

has an interesting duo that has easily developed a feel for their tendencies. Quarterback Zach Mettetal and wide receiver Tyler Mettetal are twins.

Their bond runs so deep that Tyler joked he felt a sudden twinge when Zach took a big hit downfield, even though he didn’t see it fully.

Other teams need an offseason to establish a connection the Mettetals have had their entire lives.

“Since we were 12 years old, Zach has always told me if the ball isn’t there at the end of the route, come back to the ball,” Tyler Mettetal said.

“Our offseason is route running, footwork and catching passes.”

The act of catching a pass becomes easier if a wide receiver can manipulate the defensive back in front of them. St. Francis coach Mike Fitzgerald has noticed more defenses have turned to press coverage where a defensive back lines up directly in front of a wide receiver and attempts to “jam” them – that is,

push them off their intended route at the line of scrimmage.

If the timing between quarterback and wide receiver breaks down, the defensive line or anyone applying pressure has an extra second to make a sack or force a rushed throw. Coffey and Tyler Mettetal agreed that a good route gets the defensive back to turn his hips opposite the cut that is being made.

A wide receiver also has a distinct advantage over the defensive back: the element of surprise.

“We know the route being run; the defensive back doesn’t,” Coffey said. “I want to be explosive on all cuts, they should also be crisp. This year, I look at the defensive back so I don’t tip the route I’m in by looking at the location I’m running to.”

At St. Francis, Fitzgerald preps the wide receivers like quarterbacks. The examination of defensive formations and player positioning dictates the route. If the Spartans’ wide receivers can read a defense like a quarterback, perhaps players at two very different skill positions can start to think alike.

“The wide receiver position is big for us,” Fitzgerald said. “We want the defense to defend the entire field.”

Success has bred many variation and copycats of the spread offense, which also has

been a staple at Kaneland for years.

Fitzgerald theorized it’s easier to get players to buy into an up-tempo spread offense where seven to eight players get touches. It’s also an offense Fitzgerald said is the “great equalizer” because it doesn’t require massive linemen to push defenders out of the way.

But, it does require wide receivers to further their blocking skills.

“Our perimeter screen passing game is essential so we can get our screen game going,” Fitzgerald said. “We take pride in having receivers that block well. While our game plan takes into account what the defense does, we tell our receivers if they want more passes thrown, they’ve got to make sure blocks are being thrown. That’s a good motivator to block well.”

Even as he’s developed new skills, it’s old advice Tyler Mettetal turns to upon an incomplete pass.

“If I drop a ball, the first though that goes through my mind is do 10 pushups,” Mettetal said. “Someone told me that back when I started playing football in second grade, and it has stuck with me. I was quarterback for one year in second grade. I decided I wanted to catch the ball and run with it, that was more fun.”

Mettetal had good foresight. Modern offenses should allow him to have plenty of fun.

STC North girls tennis tops rival East

By TAMMY SWANSON editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Powerful winds and cold temperatures proved equalizing factors for both St. Charles girls tennis teams on Wednesday.

St. Charles North went head-to-head against crosstown rival St. Charles East.

Everyone had close matches as both teams dealt with less than ideal weather conditions.

The North Stars edged out the Saints for the 4-3 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win.

“It’s a fun rivalry. It’s fun to play against North,” East coach Matt Bulman said. “The girls get excited about it. The wind is the great equalizer for everybody. Everyone had to play in it and deal with it.”

“It’s the first time this program has beat [East] in the four years the seniors have been here, so we’re proud of that,” North coach Sean Masoncup said. “The East team has very good players. We’re lucky to come out with a win.

I thought our girls were aggressive and played our style of tennis.”

At No. 1 singles, North’s Shelby Thomas beat Olivia Gapuz, 6-3, 6-2.

“I think I did pretty well. It was pretty hard to overcome the wind and being able to move my feet and get to the ball,” Gapuz said. “I think the competition is pretty good. She seems like she was able to use

the wind to her advantage.”

North (9-2 overall, 4-1 UEC River) got another win when Kaitlyn Anderson defeated East’s Katie McCarthy at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4.

“I thought I played pretty good, but the wind was really tough. I just tried to keep the ball in play,” said McCarthy.

Hyemin Lee of East (8-4, 3-2) beat Madelyn Murray in three sets at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3). At first doubles, Morgan Rerko and Emma Spellman of North beat Paige Ackerman and Emily Sullivan, 6-1, 6-2.

“It’s hard adjusting on each side, but I think as we went, we got more used to it (the wind).

I think me and Morgan were more aggressive at the net,” said Spellman.

East’s Sonia Ost and Emily Hautzinger combined for a No. 2 doubles win, beating Brittany Rohrsen and Breanne Warne, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.

“The beginning was a little rough, but second set we felt really confident,” Ost said. “I wasn’t with my usual partner.

It was fun because we usually don’t play together. We had to figure out the beginning Masoncup feels his team is peaking at the right time and looks to prepare for a UEC title.

“Getting a win against a great team like East is nice.

We’re trying to get ourselves ready to go into conference and hopefully we’ll be a point or two behind Geneva,” Masoncup said.

St. Francis coach Kevin Ward wasn’t really sure what to expect putting his back line together this season. With players being thrust into bigger roles, along with changing positions, there would not have been much shock if there was a bit of a learning curve.

Through 12 games this season, including last night’s 1-0 win over Marmion, the Spartans (9-1-2) have allowed just three goals. The last two of which came in a 2-1 loss to Mt. Carmel eight games ago.

Since that loss, on Sept. 10, St. Francis has won seven straight games, scoring 29 goals, while allowing zero.

“As a team, we have just really worked well in that aspect of the game,” Ward said. “The back line and goalkeeper have really meshed well as a unit.

It was a new tandem this year and we’re really lucky to have those guys mesh so well so quickly.”

The anchor of the Spartans’ defensive effort is goalkeeper Jonathan Burke. The senior net minder has ten shutouts this season. As far as the back line is concerned, senior Timmy Pisarski and junior Carney Herard man the middle, while sophomores Jacob Power and Ethan Grosam provide support on the wings along with freshman Nicholas Gulli.

Ward knows his team has yet to face its toughest challenges, but hopes that its consistent play will continue in the coming games.

Fecal incontinence can result if something goes wrong with any of these mechanisms: • Reduced rectal capacity. Surgery, radiation or inflammatory bowel disease can stiffen or scar the rectum. The rectum loses elasticity and cannot store a normal amount of stool.

• Constipation. When hard stool becomes stuck in the rectum, liquid stool may leak out around it.

• Sphincter damage. If the internal anal sphincter is damaged, bits of stool can leak out without your knowledge or control. If the external anal sphincter muscles are damaged, you may be unable

to squeeze them hard enough or long enough to make it to the toilet.

• Pelvic floor muscle weakness.

Fecal incontinence can result if these muscles become weak, or if they contract and relax at inappropriate times.

• Rectal prolapse. When the muscles supporting the rectum are weak, the rectal lining may descend into the anal canal or protrude from the body. If that happens, your external sphincter must work harder to keep you continent.

• Nerve damage. Incontinence may develop if nerves controlling the sphincters malfunction.

Nerve damage can result from childbirth, multiple sclerosis, stroke, diabetic neuropathy or other conditions.

There are new options for treating and managing fecal incontinence. Most people with this distressing condition can get some relief from these treatments. We will discuss them in a future column.

It is easy to be complacent at the bridge table, assuming everything will be sunny. This deal would trip up the less cautious.

How should South play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest diamond and East puts up the 10?

North’s two-club rebid indicated at least a six-card suit with some 12-14 points. South, with game-going values, jumped to the logical final contract. (Note that five clubs can be defeated if East leads a diamond.)

Declarer begins with eight top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond (trick one) and three clubs. And surely those lovely clubs would produce six winners and two overtricks.

The original South won with his diamond jack, cashed the club queen, and led his other club.

West’s discard brought the play to a grinding halt. The long pause didn’t help; declarer was doomed.

South should realize that if East gets on lead and pushes a diamond through, the contract is in jeopardy. To stop that from happening, declarer should execute what is called an avoidance play. He crosses to the dummy (say, with a heart) and plays a club to his 10.

Here, it wins and South takes 11 tricks after all. But even if West can produce the club jack, the contract is safe.

London averages 23.4 inches per annum. That compares with, say, 36.2 inches for Seattle, 46.2 inches for New York City, and 61.9 inches for Miami.
