Kaneland teachers get 3.99 percent raise

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Teachers in Kaneland School District 302 will receive a salary increase for the 2014-15 school year. Officials from the Kaneland Education Association and Kaneland’s school board announced the agreement after Monday night’s board meeting at Harter Middle School. Teachers will receive an increase of 3.99 percent over the previously negotiated schedule, officials said, adding that the total cost will be $962,000. KEA represents teachers at Kaneland.

School board members Monday night OK’d a move to establish a Dec. 15 meeting date, pushing back a meeting originally scheduled for Dec. 8. According to a timeline suggested by search firm BWP and Associates and district officials, a superintendent contract could be completed by the Dec. 15 meeting.

Leading up to that date, board members will be seeking feedback from several groups, including students, community members, teachers and more. The search became necessary after the previous superintendent, Jeff Schuler, left the district to become superintendent at Wheaton Warrenville District 200. Renee Goier is serving as the dis-

trict’s interim superintendent.

A significant early step in the process, a community forum, is set for 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Harter Middle School, 1601 Esker Drive, Sugar Grove.

Also, an online survey will be available starting Friday at the district’s website, www. kaneland.org.

Representatives from BWP were at Monday’s meeting to talk about the details of the search. One representative, Mark Friedman, said candidates will want to know two things before asking about salary. The most important he said, is “what’s the board like?” Also, Friedman said they will want to know why Schuler left right before the beginning of a school year.

“We’ve got a good answer to that one,” Friedman said.

Valente said he thought teachers deserved a raise that is “a lot more than 4 percent,” but he said the increase could mean the district eventually might have to raise the levy.

Hardware store opens in Sugar Grove

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Big Rock resident Ron Weiten on Tuesday was picking up a few washers at the new Sugar Grove Ace Hardware store.

The 16,000-square-foot store opened last week at 160 E. Galena Blvd., near a Jewel-Osco.

It is the village’s first hardware store. Weiten said the store is long overdue. The store has been doing brisk business since opening on Sept. 23, said owner Mark Driscoll, of Batavia.

“We had a lot of people over

the weekend,” Driscoll said.

“The overall response has been very positive.”

A grand-opening celebration is set for mid-October, he said. This is Driscoll’s first Ace Hardware store. He spent 36 years in the grocery business, including being vice president of operations for the Jewel-Osco chain. Not only is the store the first hardware store in Sugar Grove, but it also is the only hardware store in the Kaneland area, Driscoll said.

County to keep property tax levy flat for 3rd year

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County won’t collect any more property taxes in 2015 than it did this year.

In a report to the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick said the proposed 2015 budget calls for a flat property tax levy at $53,891,513. The levy has been at that level since 2013.

Although the general fund will be increasing about 2.8 percent – from about $80.9 million to slightly more than $83.1 million – the overall county budget will decline by about $3 million, or 1.2 percent, for a total of $258 million, Onzick said.

The budget does not include any new debt, he said.

In fact, he said, debt will be reduced by $13.72 million, and interest on debt will decrease by $458,655.

Additional staffing also is factored into the budget for the departments of auditor, public defender and court services, Onzick said. Salary and benefits for these employees total $645,403.

Excluding the additional headcount, the total salary and wage increase is $914,700, Onzick said.

He said the increase is because of collective bargaining agreements for union employees and a 2 percent increase for non-union employees, excluding elected officials.

The county’s health insurance contribution is expected to increase by 6.2 percent, the lowest negotiated rate for its current Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, Onzick said. Assuming the county adopts Guardian as a new dental insurance provider, the county’s dental insurance contribution should decrease by 8 percent, he said.

The County Board is expected to approve the budget for public display on Oct. 14.

Approval of the budget is slated for Nov. 10.

The balanced budget is the result of weeks of work to reduce a projected $2 million gap.

Increases in user fees for the offices of county clerk, recorder and sheriff are among the measures that helped balance the budget.

The County Board, however, has yet to vote on the new fees, which are budgeted to generate $712,720 for the general fund. They will be brought to the appropriate standing committees and be acted on by the full board in November, Onzick said.

Sheriff hopefuls face off at candidate forum

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Donald Kramer and Willie Mayes Sr., candidates for Kane County Sheriff in the Nov. 4 general election, faced off Tuesday at a candidate forum held at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin. Republican Kramer and Democrat Mayes fielded questions for an hour at the League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area event, where about 70 people came to see the candidates.

Mayes has 28 years experience in law enforcement, 22 of those years at the sheriff’s office and is currently a lieutenant and Bomb Squad Commander. Kramer has 30 years experience also with Kane County at all levels, achieved the rank lieutenant and retired nearly five years ago.

Each touted their advanced degrees and extensive experience as reasons why they should be sheriff – but also exchanged a few barbs. Kramer’s father George Kramer was sheriff from 1978 to 1986 and hired him in 1979, giving him his start at the sheriff’s office.

“We both talked about our fathers who were previously in law enforcement. At the end of the day, they are not running for Kane County Sheriff,” Mayes said.

“We talk about master’s degrees – I could make as compelling an argument about experi-

ence,” Mayes said. “A degree without experience is nothing. But experience with a degree really allows Donald you be able to Kramer work and continue moving forward.”

Mayes said he has been endorsed by Kane County Sheriff Pat P e r e z , w h o Willie did not seek Mayes Sr. re-election.

Kramer said when he left the sheriff’s office nearly five years ago, it was to run against Perez.

son for the current sheriff [to] not want me to be in the office?”

Kramer said. “I wouldn’t want my opponent to be somebody who worked at the office. I might hold that against them.”

To a question about how statistics show there should be 112 officers and the department has 92, the candidates were asked if they favored increasing the number of staff and how they would pay for it.

Mayes said he favored an increase and would seek funding by educating county board members about the sheriff’s office’s needs. Kramer said he would keep the staffing as is.

“The citizens made it quite clear they want a flat budget,” Kramer said. “The citizens have pretty much put their foot down, ‘Enough is enough.’ ”

KDOT official: Anderson Road project ‘back on schedule’

asloboda@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Mother Nature hasn’t been kind to the Anderson Road extension project in Elburn.

Officials last winter reported the cold weather limited the amount of progress crews could make.

More recently, spring and summer rains contributed to delays because crews needed to do earthwork, which is very sensitive to water, said Dave Boesch, construction chief for the Kane County Division of Transportation.

He said it would rain, crews would wait for the earth to dry, and then it would rain again.

“We suffered a little bit of a setback with the weather,” Boesch said.

But, he said, crews have caught up because of favorable weather and by working longer days and weekends.

“We’re back on schedule,” Boesch said. “We have a lot of dirt that we’re moving.”

The Anderson Road project will extend the road, which currently stops at the intersection with Prairie Valley Street, to the south.

“We will try to beat that,” he said.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson said it is exciting to see the progress be-

ing made on the county project.

“They’re moving along every day,” he said. “Step by step and little by little.”

To get the best view of the work, go to the Metra station, 43W166 Keslinger Road, An-

derson said, noting the work isn’t as visible from the north side of the tracks.

The Metra users “get a picture of it every day,” he said.

As of late last month, Boesch said crews were continuing with earth work.

The “massive pile of dirt” on the site eventually will be the road, he said, explaining workers need to get it high enough to get over the tracks.

Crews also will be doing storm sewer work, and, in November, a temporary access road for Metra will be installed, he said. He said the existing road will be used for construction to build the bridge.

Boesch said the contractor for the bridge has talked about working through the winter but noted work might pause for certain weather conditions, such as extreme cold.

“It, of course, impacts equipment,” he said.

Hogfan’s 6th fundraiser to raise money for leukemia research

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com In the years since her son died of leukemia, a blood cancer, the charity established in his honor, Friends of Jason Gould, raised more than $100,000 for leukemia and lymphoma research and saved thousands of lives, said his mother, Sandy Gould.

The sixth annual Jason’s Hogfan Party will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Mike and Denise’s Pizzeria, 1760 N. Farnsworth Ave., Aurora.

Tickets at the door are $25 for adults and $10 for children aged 7 to 17. Those younger

than 7 are free.

With a Star Wars theme, the event features raffles, a live auction, 50/50 raffle, Star Wars drink glasses and characters from the 501st Legion, Midwest Garrison and Rebel Legion.

Proceeds support leukemia and lymphoma research to honor the memory of Jason Gould, who lived in Elburn and Oswego, Sandy Gould said.

“He was 33 when he got it and 36 when he died,” said Sandy Gould, 72. “He had a stem cell/bone marrow transplant ... his own Epstein Barr virus turned it into a

very aggressive lymphoma.

I just wasn’t satisfied that they couldn’t do anything for him.”

After two years, Sandy Gould found The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center for the Friends of Jason Gould to support.

Dr. Rob Baiocchi, the group’s lead researcher, is expected to attend the fundraiser and give an update on how donations are used to save lives, she said. Among the successful treatments developed is for the same type of viral lymphoma that her son had, she said.

Dawn, remarried in 2011 to Ted Ruler, and they live in Oswego. They and Sharon Trube, of Lisle, are involved in the Hogfan fundraiser.

“It was Jason’s wish that we help other people,” Trube said. “We’ll [host the fundraiser] as long as we still have the energy.”

Trube said she was impressed with Ted Ruler, who never met Jason Gould, but who went to great lengths to make the upcoming event as successful as possible.

“He’s not only bringing the Star Wars people into it, he built a Chewbacca kissing booth,” Trube said.

“Jason died way too young, and to have a new husband devoted to supporting this – he was willing to do these things for Jason in his honor,” Dawn Ruler said.

Ted Ruler said he belongs to the 501st Legion, a worldwide Star Wars organization, the Midwest Garrison, which is the Illinois Chapter, and the Rebel Legion, also a worldwide chapter.

Sandy Gould said she was not sure whether this year’s fundraiser would be their last, but with the enthusiasm of Ted and Dawn Ruler and Sharon Trube, it likely would continue.

BATAVIA – A reckless driver with possible ties to a crime in Geneva eluded county police during an incident last week, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Saturday, a deputy at Fabyan Parkway and Route 31 in Batavia began after a Chevrolet Cavalier after reportedly seeing it cross the double yellow line and make an illegal right-hand turn onto Route 31.

Despite the deputy’s efforts to stop the vehicle, it continued south on Route 31 in a reckless manner, police reported. It reportedly wove in and out of traffic, failed to signal for the lane changes and maintained

speeds of about 50 to 60 mph.

For safety reasons, the deputy deactivated the squad’s emergency lights near Route 31 and Main Street in Batavia, and the Cavalier increased its speed to more than 80 mph, police reported.

The deputy reportedly was unable to keep the car in sight because of its high speed but passed information to local police agencies and the Illinois State Police. After the incident, dispatch told the deputy the vehicle matched the description of a vehicle involved in a retail theft before the attempted traffic stop, police reported.

The Geneva Police Department reportedly was investigating that case.

ST. CHARLES – A family-owned supermarket chain has started a special sale at its St. Charles location, and its president is mum on what it might mean for the future of the store.

The Butera Market at 2732 E. Main St. in St. Charles on Saturday began an inventory reduction sale on select items at its store. Products such as frozen entrées, a variety of ethnic food and pet food are 20 percent off, and Butera is advertising the sale via handwritten signs in the store’s front doors and windows.

The St. Charles location is the only store out of Butera’s 10 current stores that is holding the special sale, Butera Market President Joseph Butera said Tuesday. He said he was directed to reduce the inventory of the store and generate more sales on some of the store’s

slower categories, and he had little else to say on the status of the St. Charles location.

“We have not made an official announcement, and I am not intending to do so today,” Butera said. “The store remains open ... it’s business as usual.”

If and when any Butera location is closed, it’s always the company’s plan to offer employees a chance to transfer to the other locations, Butera said.

The company’s latest location opened Aug. 24 and was a former Piggly Wiggly at 998 W. Army Trail Road in Carol Stream. A second Elgin location will open by year’s end in Tyler Creek Plaza, Butera said.

“It would never be our intention to lose any employees,” he said. “We would hope that all our employees stay with us.”

The St. Charles Butera opened on March 10, 2004, Butera said.

Retired St. Charles teacher celebrates 100th birthday

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Fran Gustafson’s friends and family know how to throw a 100th birthday party – or four of them, to be exact.

First, there was the Delta Kappa Gamma party on Thursday at the Delnor Glen assisted living community in St. Charles, where Gustafson lives. Then there were events on Saturday at St. Charles Congregational United Church of Christ and on Monday at Ferson Creek Elementary School in St. Charles.

Gustafson completed the series of celebrations on her actual birthday Tuesday with cake and a 100-balloon release with her neighbors outside Delnor Glen. She is 100.

“She’s a little overwhelmed ... but she always rises to the occasion,” said Gustafson’s daughter, Ann Kroger of West Chicago.

Kroger was grateful to Delnor Glen and all the groups that wanted to recognize her mother, who was the only PE teacher in St. Charles during the late 1930s for first through 12th grades in four schools, according to Gustafson’s church.

Gustafson still enjoys walking every day outdoors and enjoys reading, although her vision is not what it used to be, Kroger said.

to a young St. Charles math and chemistry teacher named Wirth Gustafson. She married him in 1939 and was allowed to remain teaching at a time when most women had to quit the profession after their nuptials, according to the church.

When Ferson Creek Elementary was built in 1989, it was dedicated in honor of the Gustafsons for their dedication

and commitment to children, especially those of St. Charles School District 303. Wirth Gustafson died on Sept. 29, 2002.

Gustafson has four grandchildren, and the only female one, Katie Volk, became a teacher in Rockford. She was at Gustafson’s Tuesday celebration with her son, Andy, 13, and other family members.

The family joined about 60 other people outside the Delnor Glen main entrance to release the balloons. As the crowd told Gustafson that they loved her and sang “Happy Birthday” to her, she became emotional.

“Thank you,” she said, before smiling and walking back into the building with the group.

Batavia man faces 12 charges in St. Charles traffic incident

CHARLES – A Batavia man racked up 12 charges – including five felonies – from a drive through St. Charles early Friday that ended with him spinning out and crashing into electrical control boxes, making an intersection go dark, according to a St. Charles police report.

over the limit, a Class 4 felony.

He also was ticketed with speeding, speeding 40 mph or more over the limit, improper lane use, driving without insurance, DUI, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent, and driving with a revoked license.

Clara was born January 24, 1914, to Celeste and Honore Cailliau who immigrated to the United States from Belgium. She was born in St. Charles and raised on Dean Street, and was the youngest of 5

Oury, who was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, told police a small pickup truck cut him off in the 900 block of North Fifth Avenue, causing him to lose control.

He reportedly did not recall seeing a vehicle behind him that had red and blue lights and a siren activated.

Oury was taken to the Kane County jail, where he remained in custody Tuesday afternoon.

Online documents indicate his bail was set at $50,000, and he is expected in court for a status hearing on Oct. 8.

Celebration of her life will be Friday, October 3, 2014, starting with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Moss-Norris Funeral Home in St Charles. Funeral services will follow the visitation and begin with prayers at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. before proceeding to St Patrick Catholic Church, 400 Cedar Street, in St Charles, to celebrate Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery.

Jeb Bush’s struggle to win over conservatives

By JAMELLE BOUIE Slate WASHINGTON – Last week, Jeb Bush went to Greensboro, North Carolina, to stump for Thom Tillis, the state House speaker and the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate. This wasn’t a policy seminar or think tank event, it was a party rally and Bush had one job – to give red meat and boost enthusiasm for a flailing campaign.

And he failed. Speaking to an audience of conservative North Carolinians, Bush made the case for immigration reform – “Fixing a system that doesn’t work is a big thing that I think will restore and sustain economic growth for this country” – and voiced his support for Common Core standards, a verboten stance

among Republican voters.

That put Tillis in the uncomfortable position of needing to distance himself from his advocate, telling Bush that – on immigration – “You have to make it clear that amnesty shouldn’t be on the table,” and attacking the federal Department of Education as “a bureaucracy of 5,000 people in Washington.”

The New York Times called this “rough,” and it was – the tone-deaf showing of an amateur. Which gets to the problem of Jeb Bush.

At every turn, the former Florida governor is hailed as a savior for the Republican Party, and for good reason.

Even with the baggage of his brother, he brings powerful advantages, from the network of the Bush dynasty and fundraising prowess,

to policy chops, potential Latino support (on account of his time in Florida), and the enthusiasm of the GOP establishment.

But as almost anyone can tell you, there’s a huge step between “good on paper” and good. And, judging from his recent performance, it’s hard to say Bush stands as a genuinely good candidate.

The Tillis affair is representative of Bush’s flaws as a candidate. A more talented politician would have tailored his message to his audience.

Since leaving office, Bush has lived in the realm of corporate philanthropy, where wealthy executives give huge sums for a variety of unconservative causes, like climate change and Common Core.

It’s a world of vocal centrism,

where Michael Bloomberg is esteemed and the fights are for gun control and calorie labeling, not traditional values and the repeal of Obamacare.

It’s possible Bush could abandon this and shape himself into a warrior for Republican conservatism.

But I doubt it.

As a major advocate for Common Core (his Foundation for Excellence has collected millions from pro-Common Core groups) and immigration reform, he’s too removed from the world of conservative politics to adapt. And even if he could make the shift, he’d have to stand against more genuine competitors like Sen. Marco Rubio and (potentially) Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Put another way, even after Bush flipped on a path to citizen-

ship last year, he was still behind the curve on anti-immigration rhetoric.

Here are the facts: Jeb Bush has been out of the political game for almost a decade. If he had the intensity of a Richard Nixon or a Ronald Reagan – who had long respites from national politics before winning the presidency – it would be different. But he hasn’t done the usual work of regular campaigning and fundraising that defines the active candidate. If there’s a fire that defines a presidential contender, he doesn’t seem to have it.

All the money raised is going to help two of Elburn fire department’s own firefighters who recently had children with significant medical problems and expenses.

“I think Avery did an outstanding job tonight, I think Kyla Augustine did and I think Morgan Kull did a good job tonight, too,” said East coach Jennie Kull, referring to her daughter. “I won’t tell her that.

“And Meg Schildmeyer. There wasn’t one person that didn’t get the job tonight.

We knew they were going to focus on Mikaela (Mosquera) so everyone else had to step up, and they did tonight.”

Schildmeyer (eight kills, nine assists), Macklin and Augustine (five kills each), Anne Hughes (15 digs), Kull (nine assists) and Mosquera (three blocks) were among the top producers for East.

“We got kills from our middles, rightsides, outsides – everyone contributed,” Mosquera said. “It was great. We just kept on pushing and giving it our all, no matter who had the ball and who was hitting.”

Coach Kull called Geneva (16-3, 4-1 UEC River) an “outstanding” opponent, and while Geneva’s season to date bears that out, the Vikings didn’t look the part Tuesday, particularly in Game 2.

Grace Loberg and Hannah Lanasa each had six kills to pace Geneva and Ally Barrett added five. Megan Cameron (11 assists) and Kelsey Wicinski (eight digs) also chipped in.

East’s dominance came on the heels of a surprise nonconference loss Monday in two games against Downers Grove South.

“Last night was tough,” Schildmeyer said. “We played flat, we didn’t play how we wanted to. But I think what helped us play better is we were like ‘That’s not going to happen, we can’t play like that again.’ It was a good eye opener for what we have to play like.”

East’s crosstown rival, St. Charles North, now will circle an Oct. 14 date with the Saints as an opportunity to forge a potential three-way tie atop the conference with Geneva, East and North. That match will be at East.

had taken her share of lumps against top returning state meet talent lately, topped North’s Julia Nickolson, 6-1, 6-0.

“Just had to hit it back and be patient,” Gapuz said. “I tend to like to hit winners, but I kind of played it safe today.”

North (2-3 UEC) showed aggressiveness where it has shined most this season, in the top two doubles slots.

The North Stars’ No. 1 tandem of juniors Brittany Rohrsen and Morgan Rerko defeated the Saints’ Jess Spoerl and Paige Ackerman, 6-3, 6-3, by relying on a camaraderie that first sprouted when they became friends as first-graders.

Earlier, Kathe channeled the importance of chemistry as she discussed playing with Es-

ler, a fellow senior who typically pairs with classmate Allison Smith (illness).

“With Brittany, since we’ve known each other so long, we kind of know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” Rerko said. “We can just tell when the other partner is down, kind of, and we know how to cheer each other up and get each other energized.”

There weren’t many instances when that resolve was needed Tuesday. Ditto for North’s other victory, a 6-2, 6-1 win from the No. 2 doubles team of Emma Spellman and Lianne Anderson.

East’s Sonia Ost and Jenna Patzner earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at third doubles. Given the North Stars’ sound reputation at that part of the lineup, the

Saints’ knew upsetting the doubles balance was imperative.

Then again, competing against North in anything amps up the urgency.

“Oh, yeah,” Kathe said. “We always want to win. We always are intense. But this one was a little extra special because it was the nemesis.”

Kathe still delivered that last word with a smile, a gesture that was commonplace as players shared apples and granola bars while conversing after the match.

Most donned at least one extra layer of clothing as they chatted on a chilly day.

“I like this kind of weather for tennis, but I know some people, it changes,” Rerko said.

“But I thought it was fine.”

Cadets trip up Spartans in Chicago Catholic League match

By THOMAS DELVES editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The Marmion boys soccer team controlled much of the possession on Tuesday, leading to a 2-1 win against rival St. Francis in a Chicago Catholic League match at Fichtel Field.

The Cadets (8-8, 3-1) took the ball in the opening minutes and used quick passing to keep the Spartans off balance and off the ball. Although St. Francis was not able to move onto the attack often in the first 10 minutes, the Spartans’ defense thwarted multiple Cadet attacks.

With 13:41 left in the first half, Marmion sophomore Sean Miller was able to crack the Spartan defense with a soft touch that dribbled into the goal. The ball was passed deep into the St. Francis box and Miller got a foot on it to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.

“This is the performance I expected from the beginning,” Marmion coach Ricky Del Toro said, “I’m glad we’re not peaking yet. … I’m hoping we can do a little bit better but right now the end of the season is coming up, and this is where we should

start playing our best soccer.”

The Cadets took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a few spectacular saves by junior goalkeeper Matthew Fletcher.

Once again after halftime, the Cadets came out firing and were able to score on a wellplaced shot by midfielder Tim Wheeler. Sophomore Nick Grant lofted a ball into the box that landed at the foot of Wheeler, who finished the play making it 2-0.

The Spartans (5-6-3, 3-1-1 CCL) did not go quietly. Despite struggling to string together possession, St. Francis pressured the ball at every chance.

The pressure paid off with less than five minutes to go when senior Jose Zepeda snuck a ball past Fletcher to cut the lead in half.

“It’s been a tough season, but we are not giving up,” firstyear St. Francis coach Kevin Ward said. “You can see we don’t give up and we’re flexible and we’re tenacious.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East girls tennis teammates Grace Esler and Jessica Kathe shared singles backgrounds before linking up as doubles partners.

Initially, that presented a handful of mutual kinks to work through, too.

“It was just kind of with the whole doubles communication and whose ball is who,” Kathe said. “But by now, we’re really good at getting the shots we need to get.”

charged back in the second set before Esler and Kathe repelled them once more.

Many matches offered more of the same in the Saints’ 5-2 win against their visiting Upstate Eight Conference River Division rivals.

“I think East’s consistency – and we were a little shaky today … but East was definitely the more consistent team today,” North Stars coach Eve Tubman said.

East (4-1 UEC River) geared up for Thursday’s key conference dual at Batavia behind an efficient singles sweep.

Olivia Gapuz (No. 1), Kelsey Straumann (No. 2) and Haley Jeanes (No. 3) yielded a combined eight games en route to victory.

The pipeline between the St. Charles East girls basketball team and the St. Louis metropolitan area is expanding.

About a week after East classmate Katie Claussner committed to Washington University, East forward Kyra Washington made a Division-I commitment last week to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Carpooling considerations weren’t the driving factor in Washington’s decision, but it’ll be nice to have a former teammate across the Mississippi River.

“We’ve been friends since second grade so we’ll still be close together, so that’s exciting,” Washington said.

Washington visited SIU-E in late August and received a scholarship offer on the trip, she said. The Cougars, members of the Ohio Valley Conference, are coached by Paula Buscher, who previously coached at Bradley.

Washington was impressed by team workouts she watched while on the SIU-E campus.

“They got stuff done,” Washington said. “Like at practice, they got stuff done but then outside of that they were just really good people to be around, so the mix of the two, I really liked.”

Washington also was interested in Illinois-Chicago and Western Michigan. A 6-footer with a wiry build, Washington is more of a face-up threat than a banger, and said she likely will put her perimeter skills to even more use at the college level.

“I played shooting guard through my travel team [Illinois Lady Lightning] so I’m kind of used to it, but I think it’ll be a little difficult,” Washington said.

“We’ve done pretty good in our summer stuff,” Washington said. “It’s a good group so I’m hoping we can keep it going throughout the season. We have some athletic girls on the team who can really help us out as a whole.”

Willis, supporters speak out: Brian Willis and a group of his supporters spoke at Monday night’s Kaneland school board meeting at Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove, where the school board officially approved his dismissal as Kaneland’s softball coach.

Willis said a harassment charge that he contended was shown to be “baseless” was part of the school’s review that led to his ouster, adding it was the first time in his long coaching career

he’s faced such a charge.

Players and parents who spoke on Willis’ behalf focused much of their commentary on Willis being tough but fair and making players earn their playing time.

The school board did not respond to any of the Willis-related feedback.

Kaneland Principal Jill Maras said earlier this month the school considered Willis’ removal as coach a closed matter but that he would remain as a physical education and driver’s education teacher. She added that his removal was unrelated to his health; Willis battled colon cancer during the Knights’ 2014 season, which ended with a 20-13 record.

It’s definitely a big confidence boost because I changed positions this year, I previously played safety and running back, so just getting in there, getting plays, really helps to build confidence in myself and lets me be more aggressive toward plays and have more confidence in my play overall.

Batavia is enjoying one of its finest seasons in program history, and there’s little doubt who has been the Bulldogs’ ringleader.

Duquesne-bound senior Ian Larson is on pace to flirt with 30 goals on the season, taking an already impressive Bulldogs career to another level this fall.

“I’d say so,” Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “ … I think a lot of his leadership has come out. That’s been kind of the big thing, I think. Obviously he’s been a good player in [his three years] since he’s been here. Can he score goals, yes, can he assist, yes. He can do those things, and he could do those things as a freshman.

“But now it’s more the leadership role, it’s more taking on some ownership and making some other guys better, pushing other guys, things like that.”

Larson’s measureables have been remarkably consistent, too. Just within the past week, he scored both Batavia goals in a 2-1 win over Geneva, scored in a 2-1 win against West Aurora, added three goals in a 7-1 win against Oswego East and had an assist in the Bulldogs’ 1-0 win against Wheaton Warrenville South.

Gianfrancesco said Larson’s zeal for the game is evident on a daily basis.

“He enjoys playing, enjoys being out here win, lose or draw,” Gianfrancesco said. “He’s a competitor, but he just likes to be out here and play.”

Lesson learned Geneva played a solid second half against Batavia last week, scoring to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 2-1 and producing a late equalizing bid that was disallowed by an offsides call.

Geneva coach Ryan Estabrook said the

match left the team “ruing” its inability to play steadier in the first half and finding itself in need of a big comeback.

“It’s pretty upsetting but at the same point if we can learn from that and improve going forward, then [the loss to Batavia] is not a complete wash,” Estabrook said.

Seeds to be unveiled Postseason seeds for teams in classes 2A and 3A are scheduled to be released Thursday at IHSA.org, with pairings to follow Friday.

In Class 3A, Batavia and St. Charles East – the Upstate Eight Conference River’s top teams – won’t have to jockey with one another for prime seeding. Batavia is part of the Bolingbrook Sectional while St. Charles East is slotted in the Bartlett Sectional.

The shingles vaccine is not for everyone Dear Doctor K: You’ve written about who should get the shingles vaccine, and why. Are there any groups of people who should not get the shingles vaccine?

Dear Reader: I’m glad you asked because, yes, there are groups of people who should not get the vaccine.

Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with blisters, that lasts from two to four weeks. Its main symptom is pain, which can be quite severe. For some people, the severe pain of shingles continues long after the rash clears up. Called post-herpetic neuralgia, this condition can last for months, or even years. It can be quite debilitating.

Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. VZV quietly remains in your body after you recover from chickenpox, but it can reactivate and cause shingles many years later.

Most adults age 60 years and older should get a vaccine called Zostavax. The vaccine helps prevent shingles – and it decreases the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia if shingles does occur. The vaccine is also approved for people 50 and over. People generally should get the shingles vaccine

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff even if they have already had shingles: The vaccine will reduce the risk of getting shingles again.

The shingles vaccine consists of actual living varicella zoster virus that has been greatly weakened. The weakened virus stimulates the immune system the same way infection with the regular virus would. However, the virus has been so weakened that it cannot cause problems in people with healthy immune systems.

Still, some people should not get the shingles vaccine or should wait. This includes: • Anyone who has had a severe allergic reaction to gelatin, the antibiotic neomycin or any other component of the shingles vaccine. Tell your doctor if you have any severe allergies.

• A person who has a weakened immune system and therefore might be made sick by the virus in the vaccine. People with weakened immune systems include those with HIV/AIDS or another disease that affects the immune system; receiving

treatment with drugs that affect the immune system (for example, prolonged use of high-dose steroids); receiving cancer treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy; who have cancer affecting the bone marrow or lymphatic system, such as leukemia or lymphoma; • A woman who is pregnant, or might be pregnant. Women should not become pregnant until at least four weeks after getting the shingles vaccine. That’s because pregnant women have a somewhat weakened immune system.

• Anyone with a moderate or severe illness (including a temperature of 101.3 degrees or higher) should wait until they recover before getting the vaccine.

The vaccine is less effective when given to someone who is sick with another infection.

Shingles is no fun. And post-herpetic neuralgia can be very debilitating. So the shingles vaccine has been a very good thing – for most people, but not for all.

Question difficult to answer Dr. Wallace: Our daughter, age 15, who happens to be a superb athlete, has been denied the opportunity to try out for the freshman high school football team just because she is a girl. She can throw the ball and kick the ball farther than most boys. If our daughter is skilled enough, do you have any reason why she shouldn’t be permitted to at least try out for the football team?

Your comments will be appreciated. – Father, Houston, Texas Dear Father: This is a very difficult question for me to answer, but I’ll give it a try.

If the school offers the same sport for boys and girls, then the girls should play on the girls’ team and the boys on the boys’ team, regardless of the skills of the athletes.

In cases where a sport is offered to only boys – football, baseball, (not softball), wrestling, etc., then a girl should have the right to try out for the team and to be honestly evaluated on her skills. However, this could lead to future problems.

If a sport is offered for girls and not for boys (possibly softball, field hockey, water ballet, etc.) then boys who possess sufficient skills should be allowed to try out for these teams and be honestly evaluated.

However, you must remember that few girls will ever become starters on an all-boys team. And if boys would be allowed to play on all-girls’ teams, the team would eventually be male-dominated, thus denying some girls the opportunity to compete.

As a former varsity head basketball coach and later a high school administrator, I witnessed a wonderful growth in girls’ athletics.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Girls are every bit as skilled as boys in athletics, but the fact remains that, for the most part, boys are bigger, stronger, faster and can jump higher and farther than girls.

That’s the major reason I believe girls should compete with and against girls and boys should compete with and against boys.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a teenage girl who doesn’t watch a lot of television.

Still, teens are criticized for having poor grades because of watching the “boob tube” instead of studying. Teens seem to be blamed for everything. My parents watch a lot more television than I do! – Mindy, Moline Dear Mindy: According to Nielsen Media Research, the typical home has the television on for a little over 7 1/2 hours every day. Females 55 and over view the most television programs, averaging about 6 1/3 hours daily, while men the same age are next with 5 1/2 hours of daily viewing time. Teenage girls watch the least amount of television averaging 3 hours daily. Because of the popularity of sports on television, teenage boys log 3 1/2 hours, on average, daily.

Since teens watch more television on the weekends, the schoolnight viewing is below 2 hours. Research by the University of Michigan showed that, on average, the less television viewing time for students, the better the grades.

We have been looking at deciding between two possible trump suits. Of course, to have this quandary, two suits usually have to be bid and raised. And in this direction, if a fit is found and one player has a two-suiter, he often should show his second suit, especially in a competitive auction.

For example, look at today’s deal. Both South and West can help their partner’s high-level bidding decision.

After South opens one spade, West passes, North raises to two spades, and East overcalls three clubs, what should South do?

If a jump to four spades would silence the opponents, that would be a sensible choice (although it is an overbid). But what if West competes with five clubs? Should North-South let them stew or go on to five spades? Neither player knows. However, if South rebids three diamonds, showing his second suit, North will be aware of the double fit and can happily bid on at the five-level.

And, yes, West can also make a good bid. Over South’s three-diamond rebid, West should advance with three hearts. This cannot just be advertising a long heart suit and sufficient values to compete at the three-level, because West did not intervene on the first round. This bid shows heart length and club support (although admittedly not necessarily as good as queen-fourth).

Now look at the full deal. You will see that five clubs is unbeatable for plus 600. But five spades doubled goes down only two, minus 500.

When you have a double fit, it is usually best to declare, especially with the minority of the high-card points.
