Students eager to register to vote Law allows 17-year-olds to vote in primary if they’ll be 18 for general election

By CHARLES MENCHACA editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Kane County officials Wednesday told Batavia High School students they can register to vote at a younger age than ever before.

About 45 students heard director of elections Suzanne Fahnestock speak at the high school about a new law, which went into effect Jan. 1. Under this law, Illinois residents who are 17 years old can register to vote in a primary election if they will turn 18 before the general election.

This year, the primary election will be March 18, and the general election will be Nov. 4.

Fahnestock was joined at the event by Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez and Phil Morris, director of technology at the Kane County Regional Office of Education. During the event, they and the students also watched a brief video showing the registration process and how to use an electronic voting machine.

Adults and teens at the presentation were in agreement that everyone should exercise their right to vote.

“You can’t make a difference unless you’re part of the group going out there to vote,” Batavia senior Nicholas Kelly said.

Kelly, 17, was the first person Wednesday to register to vote at the high school. He signed up at a registration table set up outside the school cafeteria after the presentation. Kelly said he had intended to register

likely have registered thousands of students in the past two decades at the school.

He took his AP government class to the Wednesday presentation because he considers it his job to get them ready to vote.

“Our democracy requires their participation,” Kettering said of his students.

Campton Hills tabs first village administrator

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The village hired its first administrator, Jennifer Johnsen, who will step in to her new position in Campton Hills on Jan. 27, officials said.

“We’re happy that she’s coming, and we’re looking forward to having a village administrator,” trustee Al Lenkaitis said. “We went through Jennifer a lot of candiJohnsen dates ... looking for a professional to help run the village.

We’re happy that she’s coming.”

Johnsen, who lives in Batavia, was chosen from a field of 48 candidates for the position,

officials said in a statement.

Since Campton Hills’ incorporation in 2007, Village President Patsy Smith, with the assistance of the village board and resident volunteers, has served as the acting village administrator and successfully established the village while managing its resources, officials said in a statement.

Officials believed it was time to hire an administrator to add continuity and professionalism to the position, and hiring Johnsen was one of its highest priorities, officials said.

Johnsen, who is currently the administrator for the village of Berkeley, has 10 years of local government experience. She also worked at Clarendon Hills and was an intern in the offices of former State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka

and former State Rep. Patricia Lindner, officials said.

Johnsen grew up in Elgin and attended Burlington Central High School. She said the idea of working closer to home appeals to her.

“I love it – really,” Johnsen said. “I do so much for the public and the villages I worked for, and I never experience any of the progress I helped implement. It will be nice to be able to watch it grow and to be close to the progress that we make.”

Johnsen said there are some similarities with Berkeley, which has had a village administrator only since 1998.

“A village administrator wears many hats, and I am excited to take on a similar role in a larger municipality,” Johnsen said. “I think they are going to see a lot of changes over the next 20 years.”

Entries sought for St. Pat’s Parade

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership is seeking people, businesses and organizations who want to be involved with the 15th annual St. Patrick’s Parade.

In addition to parade entries, sponsors and volunteers are needed for the March 15 event, said Scott Piner, the partnership’s marketing and development manager.

Because the parade committee does much of the pre-planning, he said, volunteers are mostly needed on the day of the parade. Depending on their age, volunteers can serve as parade pacers, banner carriers and behind-thescenes workers leading up to the event, which marches down Main Street in St. Charles from Sixth Street to Fourth Avenue.

Volunteer forms are due Feb. 14, as are applications for parade entries.

Past entries have included bands, Irish dancers, floats, school groups and service clubs. The grand marshal will be announced later, Piner said.

Applicants also must obtain a certificate of insurance, sign off on the rules and regulations and, if applicable, pay a fee. The cost is $250 for businesses and $125 for partnership members. Nonprofits can participate for free.

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership is also accepting sponsors for the event. Inter-

ested businesses are asked to contact the partnership immediately. The partnership hopes to solidify sponsorships

by Feb. 7, Piner said.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Inaugural Student Artist Event kicks off Feb. 14 ST. CHARLES – The inaugural Charlie’s Center for the Arts – Student Artist Event will run from Feb. 14 through Feb. 16.

It will encompass multiple venues throughout St. Charles that will feature the visual and performing art of student artists – kindergarten through college.

Students are invited to participate in the event audition and submit visual artwork for jurying. Performing artists will receive a stipend for their performance, and visual artists’ work will be for sale, if they choose.

Fermilab to present Gallery Chamber series BATAVIA – The 2014 season of the Fermilab Arts Series Gallery Chamber Series has been set.

The Chicago Brass Quintet will perform Jan. 26. Cavatina Duo will perform on Sunday, Feb. 16. Rembrandt Chamber Players will perform March 9.

The events start at 2:30 p.m.

The performances take place at the second-floor Art Gallery at Fermilab, which is at Pine Street and Kirk Road, Batavia.

The Gallery Chamber Series tickets are $42 for all three concerts, each of which includes a reception with the performers immediately following the concert. Often the exhibiting visual artists also will be in the audience.

Eagle Scout candidate builds equipment for Campton Hills police

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills Police Chief Dan Hoffman didn’t know what to expect when 17-year-old Sam George came by Wednesday to deliver items he made as part of his Eagle Scout project.

He appeared impressed by the teen’s efforts.

“He went over and above on this one,” Hoffman said.

George, a senior at St. Charles East High School, said he spent 233 hours on the project. In addition to raising money for the materials, he led his peers in the construction of shooting target stands and built two trunk organizers for the department’s SUV squads.

“I fit my project to their needs,” George said.

Officer Randy Johnson – who served as a liaison between the department and George – said officers gave the teen direction about what they could use.

“He got a lot of input from a lot of officers,” Johnson said.

The shooting target stands are needed because the officers use various shooting ranges, which don’t always have the equipment they need, Johnson said.

George’s project must go through a review process before he is made Eagle Scout, he said. He noted he submitted his binder to the national organization this week.

The project, he said, “was rewarding.”

BATAVIA – Aliano’s Ristorante, at 90 N. Island Ave., Batavia, is looking to expand into the space next door for a pick up and delivery area, as well as reconfigure its kitchen, officials said.

City Administrator Bill McGrath said the restaurant and building owners have applied for the city’s help with obtaining tax increment finance funding and possibly some grants to help with the work.

Tax increment financing is a development tool that uses property and sales tax to fund specific improvements.

“It lifts up the entire business district,” McGrath said of using TIF funds this way.

“Some of this is a permanent investment in the building itself. So even if this restaurant is not there, the building there is more valuable because of the improvements. The combination of improvements will stay with the city for a long time.”

Aliano’s owners recently provided the paperwork requesting the city’s aid for

approximately $100,000. McGrath said if officials are able to meet with them this week, go over bids and other items, the issue will be up for discussion at next week’s joint Committee of the Whole meeting, which is set for Tuesday.

A portion of the plan also involves non-TIF money, but he does not have all the details yet, McGrath said.

“Depending on how complex it is, we’ll try to get the information to the committee and a memo on the website out on Friday,” McGrath said.

The kitchen reconfiguration includes installing a new grease trap to service the restaurant, McGrath said.

Aliano’s manager Ashlee DiDonato said the current kitchen is too small, especially on weekends.

“We’re looking to have an Aliano’s Express next door, so people can come in, pick up and it would serve as a delivery section,” DiDonato said.

“The front entry is so tiny, we get people waiting to be seated, people waiting to give their orders, people waiting to pick up their orders. This will get more space and more room in here for everybody.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Cultural Arts Commission has created a new gala fundraising event called Eat Your Art Out! to replace its popular Dancing with the Geneva Stars, which has ended its run after five years.

The new event will be an exclusive dinner that pairs art with food and wine from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Herrington Inn and Spa, 15 N. River Lane, Geneva.

Event chairwoman Alexia Monaco said tickets are $100 apiece, and only 150 will be sold.

“It’s a very exclusive event,” Monaco said. “It’s a very special experience and very, very different in being our gala fundraiser. The event concept and target audience and all details are very, very different. It’s a different level of support and investment in the community.”

Monaco said the event is planned as an elegant evening with a sit-down formal dinner of three savory courses and one dessert with three wine pairings.

The commission does not receive any tax support for these events and relies on donations and fundraisers.

The evening will include live music by a harpist and flutist, a silent auction and a live auction of the inspired art pieces with Mayor Kevin Burns ad the auctioneer.

The silent auction will continue during a cocktail hour from 6 to 7 p.m., with dinner starting at 7 p.m. Monaco said.

A Wednesday morning educational session addressed technology from unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, to smartphone apps.

Jeff Keifer, precision agriculture manager for Elburn Co-op, said he’s interested in what the unmanned aerial vehicles might bring to the industry. He provided a laundry list of possibilities including pest identification, the ability to see nutrient deficiencies, quality control of chemical applications, the

ability to analyze planter performance, drainage surveillance and topographical mapping just to name a few.

He cautioned the initial investment for the technology could be as high as $80,000.

He said the benefits are difficult to validate and service will not be available until some rules on its use are available.

“And negative connotations from the public could hinder progress,” Keifer said.

Mike Richolson of the Natural Resources Conservation Service listed several smart phone apps that farmers might find useful. Apps are available to assist with scouting for pests, mapping fields, identifying weeds and providing weather information.

GENEVA – John A. Bazar, 86, of Geneva, passed away Monday, Jan. 6, at Geneva Nursing and Rehabilitation surrounded by his family.

He was born May 21, 1927, in Czechoslovakia, the son of Andrew and Mary (Pazak) Bazar.

John worked many years in sales for Canteen Corp. He proudly served his country with the Merchant Marines in World War II. He was a member of the Geneva American Legion. John loved to travel and bowl; he was an excellent pool player and a great cook, especially chili. However, John’s greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty (Romak); children, Richard (Jo Ellen) of Virginia, Ronald (Elizabeth) of Tennessee and Janet (Patrick) Purcell of Batavia; grandchildren, Rebecca (Jason) Silverstein, Christina

(Douglas) Lane, Brian Bazar, Matthew (Carrie) Bazar, Sean Purcell, Kerri (Alan) Grage, Adam Bazar and Brendan (Ashley) Purcell; and 12 great-grandchildren.

“This is the second time I’ve come to the show,” Pfau said. “He always looks around, but his goal today was to take the licensing test.”

Each year, as many as 8,000 people flood Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center for the two-day farm show.

This year’s event focuses on technology. Along with various companies displaying equipment, some showed off new software and other precision agriculture technology.

A few of the booths were not yet manned Wednesday morning, largely because of the recent cold temperatures and snowfall, IDEAg Group marketing director Samantha Kaplan said.

New signs for county government center

The Kane County Board is expected Jan. 14 to authorize a $47,399 contract to install new signs at the Geneva campus, which includes offices for the coroner, auditor, county board, treasurer and, among others, the county clerk.

The Parvin-Clauss Sign Company of Carol Stream has been selected to do the work.

It was the lowest responsive bidder.

The government center is at 719 S. Batavia Ave. in Geneva.

During the Executive Committee meeting Wednesday, board member Ron Ford, D-Aurora, acknowledged $47,000 sounds like a lot of money but said it’s a big, detailed project that will affect signs both inside and outside.

Plans include updating the monument sign at the entrance so that the letters are easier to read against the brick. A similar sign will be added so motorists in both directions can see it.

Board member Brian Pollock, D-Aurora, asked what would happen to the signs if offices moved and whether the county could alter the signs in-house. Staff said the county would have to work with the sign company.

Improvements also could be on the way for the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township. Pending board approval Tuesday, the county will hire Hill Mechanical Group for about $40,000 to help diagnose the HVAC problems at the facility.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen described the judicial center’s heating and cooling problems as a “real challenge.”

“We are either freezing people,” he said, “… or else at other times we are cooking people.”

Contractor estimates have indicated it would cost $500,000 to $1 million to fix the problem, Lauzen said. He said the independent evaluation would be a good investment toward getting the solution right the first time.

“It’s like getting a second opinion on our clogged arteries at the judicial center,” he said.

Official: South Elgin man, 72, dies in fire KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com SOUTH ELGIN – A 72-yearold South Elgin man died in a house fire that took place Wednesday morning at 117 Beck St., South Elgin, according to a news release issued by the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

Thomas Hasier was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release stated.

An earlier news release issued by the village of South El-

gin indicated that at 9:02 a.m., the South Elgin Police Department, Kane County Sheriff’s Department and South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District responded to the call for a house fire. The coroner’s news release stated that coroner’s deputies were called to the fire at 9:29 a.m.

An autopsy was performed, and the determination of the cause of death is pending the results of the full investigation, the coroner’s release indicated.

Water main break fixed at Sugar Lane KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The water main break on Sugar Lane has been repaired, and the road “is once again fully open,” Cindy Galbreath, Sugar Grove’s village clerk, wrote in an email sent Wednesday afternoon.

The village said Tuesday that access to the road – and also to several businesses in the area – was limited because the water main break had

caused Sugar Lane to become iced over.

Despite the announcement, Galbreath urged drivers to “please use caution in the area, as there may be some residual icing.”

Also, the village stated that those who have not had their trash picked up should leave it out until Saturday because Waste Management was running behind because of icy streets in its service area. For information, call 630-466-4507, ext. 24.

Forest preserve to host snowmobile safety class GENEVA – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County is hosting a snowmobile safety class for 11- to 16-year-olds.

The class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at forest preserve district headquarters, 1996 S. Kirk Road, suite 320, Geneva.

By law, youths between the ages of 12 and 16 who wish to operate a snowmobile under the supervision of an adult must earn a snowmobile safety certificate.

Attendance at the Saturday class meets that Illinois Department of Natural Resources requirement, and is also valid in Michigan and Wisconsin.

(Eleven-year olds may take the class, but they cannot receive their certificate until they reach age 12.)

The program is being presented by the forest preserve’s public safety department and all-volunteer snowmobile safety patrol.

OPINIONS Is upgrading tech always a good idea?

With the race to transform schools into more tech-friendly environments and develop students into computer-savvy individuals, millions of dollars allocated to education are spent on faster Internet connections and new computers.

Does easier access to computers and the Internet, however, translate into higher grades and test scores?

I’ll propose a situation – suppose a parent tells his or her small kid that he or she can have one chocolate chip cookie from the high-up cookie jar. The kid would probably stick to the parent’s rules and only take one.

Let’s say that parent, while leaving the room, has

10 cookie jars and puts them all on the floor.

Sure, there might be a fair amount of trust between the kid and the parent, but the temptation of eating one’s self into a sugar- and chocolate-induced coma might prove stronger.

Now, the only cookies one will find on a computer aren’t particularly tasty, but the same principle remains.

As most high school teachers and administrators can affirm, the teenage population is the most responsible and trustworthy group of learners beyond comparison.

Given the ability to use the Internet, I’m sure most high school students would take the opportunity to better their education and, of

From my own viewpoint as a student who has succumbed to the temptation of the cookie and the computer, I can say that technology abuse within schools runs rampant.

Many employ the help of personal laptops and tablets for “note taking” during class. For those who do use these devices, the notes they take seem much more

entertaining than the commonplace script that fills my notebooks.

Perhaps it is the fact that my 70-sheet, one-subject, college-ruled notebook from Jewel does not have the means of loading Facebook or Twitter.

Or perhaps the ability to take computer notes has allowed those students to both transcribe notes and play “Angry Birds” at the exact same time. Technology manages to fascinate me every day.

Having more technology in schools won’t solve all of the problems with our current educational system. In fact, all those new computers may only add to them.

Don’t get me wrong; computers and the Internet

have the potential to be great education tools, if used in the proper capacity. To learn, I think a person needs a teacher that knows the material and engages the pupils in an exciting manner.

For all the money spent on new technology in schools, maybe administrators and politicians should redirect some of those funds to the most important part of a school – the teachers.

Helping the jobless THE WASHINGTON POST With the surprising support of six Republicans, the Senate on Tuesday mustered the 60 votes necessary to proceed on extending emergency unemployment benefits for an additional three months, at a cost of $6.5 billion.

This is good news for the 1.3 million unemployed workers who have been laid off so long that they have exhausted their unemployment insurance. It also is good news for another roughly 1.9 million at risk of exhausting their benefits later this year.

Certainly, today’s unemployment rate of 7 percent, in the context of a shrunken labor force, undermines Republican arguments that more benefits would enable

recipients to avoid seeking employment, or – as Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. – put it, “to become part of this perpetual unemployed group in our economy.”

Economic theory does, indeed, suggest that overly lengthy or generous unemployment compensation discourages work; this has been problematic in certain European countries. In the United States, where benefits generally do not exceed 50 percent of prior earnings, the best evidence suggests that extending unemployment insurance benefits now would increase the unemployment rate by only a few tenths of a percentage point. And that would mostly be because of a statistical quirk, not perverse incentives – many long-term

unemployed would cease seeking work once they lost their benefits and thus no longer count as part of the labor force.

We’d like to see Republicans and Democrats discuss ways to reform unemployment insurance programs to maximize relief to the unemployed and incentives to get back on the job. Economist Michael Strain of the American Enterprise Institute suggests cash bonuses, paid with unemployment insurance funds, as a reward to the unemployed when they find work. Ultimately, the best answer to long-term joblessness is restoring rapid economic growth, a subject to which Congress must turn as soon as the unemployment benefits fight is over.

California love Wine enthusiast brings Napa knowledge to St. Charles Wine Exchange

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – West-Coastwine enthusiast Mike Frasier uprooted his life amidst the vines in Northern California after a job with Sears relocated him to the Chicago area in 1993.

Upon retiring from the corporate hustle and bustle, Frasier decided to funnel his penchant for “fruit forward” new world wines into the Wine Exchange – a wine shop, tasting room and stage for viticultural education in St. Charles.

“I’ve tasted every wine in the shop and just about every vintage of every wine,” Frasier said, adding that he tends to focus on the new world flavor profile, which includes wine from California, Chile, Argentina, Washington, South Africa and New Zealand. However, the shop also offers old world wines from Italy, France and Spain.

“I’m a California guy, and I kind of go with that,” said Frasier, who called the Golden State home for 45 years and began his wine-tasting ventures in the ’70s. “In those days there weren’t many wineries. You could walk in and actually meet the winemakers; some of the really famous winemakers. ... I like to have that connection here.”

Frasier bought the Wine Exchange in 2006, when it was formerly located next to the Bull and Bear Tobacco Shop, and in 2009, moved it a couple doors down to its current expanded space.

The wine shop hosts nearly 150 events every year, including tastings of about five or six different wine varietals from 4 to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays

Frasier said the Wine Exchange also is “one of the few places” to allow its customers to purchase a bottle at retail price and enjoy it at the wine shop or, during warmer months, on the shop’s back patio overlooking the Fox River.

“It’s just a good place to come in and drink wine and relax,” said Amanda Garton, who has been working alongside Frasi-

er for nearly three years. “It’s like a classy ‘Cheers.’ It’s a very non-judgmental place, and everyone who comes in here ends up hanging out together.”

In addition to weekend wine tastings, the Wine Exchange’s roughly 2,000 members receive a bevy of special offers, such as complimentary admission to special wine events like MayFest and October Wine Fest, which feature – sometimes – as many as 30 wines to sample; cheese pairings; its semi-annual Black-Tie tasting of high-end

wines (at an additional cost) and discounts on wine purchases.

Membership to the Wine Exchange, which includes roughly 104 wine tasting events a year, costs an annual fee of $30 a person or $50 a couple.

Otherwise, a nonmember tasting costs $10 a person each time.

The Wine Exchange also offers wine education classes (at an additional cost to membership) taught by Frasier. “[Frasier] teaches classes that are so down-to-earth and approachable for everybody whether you know what you’re doing or not,” Garton said.

Classes include wine tasting and cover topics such as components of wine; new world versus old world wines; how wine is made; the history of wine; and how to order and taste wine.

“This is not one of those shops that has a snob appeal to it,” Frasier said. “Wine is just grape juice ... just fermented grape juice, but – boy – there is a world of difference in it.”

Buzzwords come and go in the wine industry.

Trends in winemaking can be as fickle as the stock market or the latest fashion trends. But 2013 ushered back in a philosophy, a paradigm shift that fascinated me. It was utterly welcome that winemakers started to again show restraint in their technique. They searched for balance, a word that came up in interview after interview.

The result might seem simplistic, but in 2013, in the wide array of wines that I sampled from across the globe, one characteristic stood out: Balance.

UNCORKED James Nokes via Skype. The Mulderbosch winemaker was wrapping up his day in South Africa. Yet, the theme of our interview centered around the same topic as other winemakers.

“We are all looking for balance,” Mason said. “Whether it be in wine or in life. We search for balance in all that we do.”

That search has gratefully seeped into the minds of winemakers across the globe.

In a wine that can be gregarious, Grenache, Tuck Beckstoffer spoke about balance. His Melee 2011 Grenache was the

finest interpretation of the varietal I’ve ever had. He was able to reign in the characteristics of Grenache because he let the fruit from the vineyard tell the story in the bottle.

It’s a practice I hope more winemakers embrace. Technology has allowed winemakers to almost eliminate vintage variation. But when the product of the vineyard is allowed to truly speak, spectacular wines are crafted because it’s an organic process. The final product in the bottle is what Mother Nature intended us to enjoy.

Winemakers in the Santa Rita Hills area of California carved out a reputation based on letting the vintage tell a story. Spectacularly balanced wines are the result. Alma Rosa,

Babcock and Longoria stand out as examples. They are just a few of the wineries on my Christmas and New Year’s wine trip, which was ongoing when I filed this piece. Look for the experiences from the trip in upcoming weeks.

Wine 101 Set a wine resolution for 2014. Mine is to travel to wine regions that I haven’t visited and find winemakers who will take extraordinary chances to make spectacular products.

From my early December visit to New York to discover wines from the Finger Lakes, a region in which I was totally unfamiliar, to my current trip through Santa Barbara, Calif., and the Santa Rita Hills, there

are so many producers taking risks and expanding their profession. This spring, I need to push the envelope and visit Trey Busch in Walla Walla, Wash. It’s a place I have never been and a region making amazing wines. When we met at the Heart Full of Soul fundraiser in November, his outstanding wines furthered my desire to make it to Washington.

Great wines are being made across the world.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Batavia gymnastics coach Taryn Boyce promised her athletes a pizza party if they scored at least 135 points in Wednesday’s Upstate Eight Conference dual at Geneva.

Visions of deep dish surely danced in the Bulldogs’ heads as Geneva coach Kim Hostman announced Batavia’s 135.1, a mark that still trailed the host Vikings’ 140.2 but nonetheless secured a few pieces of pie.

That was, until, fuzzy math on the Bulldogs’ beam score brought their total team aggregate to a 128.45.

Although the checker-top tables suddenly turned, Batavia still left for home with positive food for thought: whatever way you sliced it, the Bulldogs performed better than they have been recently.

“We hang out outside the gym, and I just kind of feel this is one of our more close-knit groups that we’ve had in a while,” junior Courtney Glassman said.

“So it’s really encouraging.”

Geneva worked with a short-handed lineup, as junior Grace Ginsberg (sinus infection) competed only in the vault.

Vikings freshman Claire Ginsberg registered the top score with a 37 in the all-around, edging senior Dominique Brognia (35) and junior Megan Beitzel (33.5).

For Batavia, sophomore Megan McGee was part of a three-way tie for second with an 8.6 in the vault. Freshman Cameron Hindel had the next-highest score in the vault with an 8.15, continuing a solid debut for Bulldogs newcomers on a team ripe with juniors.

“The freshmen fit in really well with the group of girls that were already here,” Glassman said. “Of course, we miss our seniors, but it’s kind of interesting not having very many seniors.”

While this week’s hazardous wind chills altered gymnasts’ routines, it didn’t fully keep them from training.

Batavia practiced Monday afternoon at Geneva-based Excel Gymnastics Academy before enjoying what junior Kristi Zabka called “just kind of a rest day” Tuesday. It was, in a manner of speaking, as Zabka still dragged her mini balance beam to the side of the family room, ostensibly spicing up the monotony of daytime TV. “It was actually warmer than it usually is,” Hostman said, “so it was good.”

The anomaly makes sense for a team that progressively is heating up down the stretch of the regular season. Geneva captured the 12-team Illinois’ Best Invitational title Dec. 21 at Wheaton Warrenville South before winning Oswego’s 12team Panther Invite a week later.

The game was originally slotted to be played Tuesday night in St. Charles, but severe winter weather caused the game to be postponed until Wednesday.

Glenbard West (6-7) jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first quarter, with all points provided by guard Will Reedy.

East (9-7) quickly overcame the deficit and launched an 11-1 run to finish the quarter leading, 15-9.

East guard Dom Adduci scored nine points in the first quarter to spark the run.

East’s full-court press led to a flurry of Glenbard West turnovers, including a steal that resulted in an Adduci threepoint play on a transition layup with three minutes left in the quarter.

Glenbard West cut the Saints draw within 10 points late in the third quarter on a 3-point basket from guard Abdulla Alzamli. Asquini answered for the Saints with a 3-pointer of his own to push the lead back to double digits and put East up, 50-38, heading into the final quarter.

The Saints were able to slow the game down in the fourth quarter and ease into their ninth victory of the season.

Woods said that the fastpaced tempo of the first three quarters of the game was the catalyst for his team’s scoring.

“We do that with pressure and trying to trap, force the ball out of their best player’s hands and try to turn it the other way up the floor,” Woods said.

Adduci led all scorers with 26 points. Gentry added 15, forward A.J. Washington had seven points and Asquini finished with six.

CHICAGO – Geneva alumna Jackie Santacaterina was not part of the Chicago Red Stars’ protected player list for Friday’s National Women’s Soccer League expansion draft, making a shift to the league’s newest franchise, the Houston Dash, a possibility.

The Red Stars on Wednesday announced their protected and unprotected player lists – comprised of 10 athletes each – for the draft to be held via teleconference at 10 a.m.

Friday. Houston can select up to 10 players, but is not allowed to choose multiple players from one team.

Santacaterina, a 26-year-old defender, underwent successful surgery on her right hip in September. She played with hip discomfort for the final two months of the 2013 season, and had three goals and one assist while starting 14 matches.

The 2014 NWSL season opens in April.

Stephens ‘playing to my strength’ at Purdue Plans for Kendall Stephens to attend Purdue University were years in the making, but his actual arrival in West Lafayette, Ind., seems to have come at just the right moment for the Boilermakers’ men’s basketball team.

Stephens committed to Purdue when he was a sophomore at St. Charles East. His father, Everette, an assistant coach with the Saints, scored more than 1,000 points for the Boilermakers during the 1980s.

The younger Stephens also has aunts and uncles living in the West Lafayette area, but he said his decision to attend Purdue was not a foregone conclusion. He also entertained offers from DePaul and many other Big Ten schools, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Northwestern.

“I think it was the coaching staff,” he said when asked what tipped the scales in favor of Purdue. “It was the location, being close to home. … I was just looking at the style of basketball I could play.”

That style of basketball included a smooth shooting stroke that can be effective from beyond the 3-point line, an area of weakness for most of the Boilermakers who returned from last year’s team that finished 16-18 overall and 8-10 in the Big Ten. Although four starters are among the returning players, they combined for just 53 3-pointers last season and shot less than 30 percent from beyond the arc.

It’s not surprising, then, that Stephens immediately fit into the plans of eighth-year coach Matt Painter. He has started 10 of 15 games and leads the team with 28 made 3-pointers. He’s shooting 35 percent from long distance.

“I’m just playing to my strength.” said Stephens, who added that he’s “working on other aspects of my game as the season goes on and every day in practice.”

ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs since a disappointing performance in a 76-70 loss to in-state rival Butler, when he scored two points and misfired on all three of his 3-point attempts.

“I knew there were going to be ups and downs my freshman year, and I’ve had some so far,” Stephens said. “I still have a lot to prove. I’m just coming in every game, every practice, staying focused.”

Stephens is averaging seven points and two rebounds a game. Whether in the starting lineup or coming off the bench, he still figures prominently in Purdue’s game plans and he’s seen no drop-off in minutes.

“I’m going to be out there if I’m playing hard and doing what the coaches ask,” he said.

Stephens scored six points and grabbed two rebounds in 16 minutes in Sunday’s 82-79 loss at Minnesota. He hit a

3-pointer from the top of the key in the final 10 seconds to pull the Boilermakers to within 3 and had a chance to force overtime with a buzzer-beating shot from half-court, but the attempt fell short.

Purdue also lost its first league game of the season to No. 3 Ohio State, 78-69.

“It’s tough in the Big Ten, especially the couple games we had, we just beat ourselves,” Stephens said. “I think we have a very promising team and we’re going to turn it around.”

He said the team still has high goals, which include a return to the NCAA tournament. The Boilermakers were invited in each of Painter’s first six seasons at the helm of the program, but were not selected last year.

Stephens is also itching for a return to postseason play after missing most of his senior year of high school with a torn labrum. He spent six months rehabbing and said it feels fine now.

“I haven’t had any problems so far,” he said.

He also hasn’t had any problems with college classes, saying he received all A’s and B’s the first semester. Perhaps his biggest adjustment to college life has been getting used to the practice sessions, which he said are longer and harder than those in high school. In fact, he spends most of his free time resting, just giving his body a chance to recuperate.

Stephens got a much-needed break over Christmas, when he spent four days back in St. Charles.

“It was nice to come home for a little bit,” he said.

Stephens will be back at his new home-away-from-home Sunday in Mackey Arena when Purdue hosts Nebraska in another Big Ten contest.

Bulldogs bits • Credit Batavia sophomore 126-pounder Ryan Marsh with a rare wrestling assist.

Two years ago, as an eighth-grader at Rotolo Middle School, he persistently needled well-proportioned classmate Dylan Uzumecki to give the sport a whirl. In short, Marsh’s persistence paid off.

“Kept nagging me every day,” Uzumecki said. “ ‘Just go to practice.’ Every day. I just got sick of it, and I finally went.”

Uzumecki’s skill level has steadily climbed since he joined the high school

program. He went 5-1 at 220 and 285 at DeKalb’s Don Flavin Invitational at the end of December, and hails upper-weight veterans Noah Frazier (195) and Connor McKeehan (220) for helping his development.

Uzumecki is pondering playing rugby in the spring, but it might not be that way if not for the confidence he’s derived from wrestling.

“Yeah, I’ve gotten a lot out of it,” Uzumecki said.

• Batavia’s Jan. 16 home dual against West Chicago has been tabbed “Wrestling Night in Batavia” and will offer free admission for all levels of wrestling, including Rotolo Middle School and the Batavia Pinners youth club.

The evening is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with Rotolo against Wheaton Edison, and will be followed by the Batavia freshmen and JV (6), Pinners exhibitions (7) and the varsity dual (7:15).

Now that’s intense Kaneland tweaked its warmup recently, making room for more live wrestling before it competes.

Coach Monty Jahns figured the maneuver went a long way in Saturday’s 30-29 victory at Plano, which he called “the most exciting dual all year” before a crowd that was “really rumbling.”

Marmion senior Johnny Jimenez pinned five of his first six opponents at the Cheesehead Invitational in Kaukana, Wis., during the weekend. His sixth and decisive bout, for the 126-pound title, went the full six minutes against someone Jimenez figures to get to know well for the next few years.

Wisconsin teammate-to-be Jens Lantz of Ellsworth (Wis.) took a 5-2 decision loss to Jimenez. Both Jimenez and Lantz are three-time state champions and have earned their titles at progressively heavier weight classes – 103 pounds, 113 and 120 – entering this season.

“I’ve met him a few times up there on visits and everything,” Jimenez said. “It was pretty cool. ... After the tournament I talked to him a little bit; before the match not too much, though. We kept the social stuff for after we wrestled.”

Seven other Cadets competed at Cheesehead, including champion Nathan Traxler (182) and runners-up Anthony Bosco (113) and Trace Carello (152).

Carello encountered a relatively familiar face in his championship bout – former Cadets state champion Bryce Brill, now of Mount Carmel.

With Marmion still awaiting the health of its full lineup, a traditionally daunting schedule of tournaments and out-of-state duals is keeping the rest of the Cadets sharp.

Just how far away from playoffs are Bears?

Of the 12 teams that started the 2013 playoffs, the Bears only played four of them. In five games against Green Bay (two), Cincinnati, New Orleans and Philadelphia, the Bears were 2-3.

The Bengals game was the first of the season and the Bengals did as much or more to lose it as the Bears did to win it, kind of like Cincinnati’s third consecutive first round playoff exit Sunday.

Their other win over the Packers, was accomplished without Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. Including the Bears game in which Rodgers went out after their first possession, the Packers were 2-5-1 without Rodgers including losses to the Giants, Lions and Steelers.

The Bears losses to New Orleans and Philadelphia were their only two

losses of the year in which they were noncompetitive, and their other five losses besides a loss to the Packers were to Detroit (two) and the last place Rams, Vikings and Redskins.

The Bears are clearly not in the same league with this year’s playoff teams.

For starters, the Bears need to get better at quarterback. Seven of the 12 playoff starters including Nick Foles, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick (91.6) had better passer ratings than Jay Cutler and all but Kaepernick were at least 12 points better at 101.2 and higher, while Cutler was 89.2.

The other five, Alex Smith (89.1), Andy Dalton (88.8), Cam Newton (88.8), Tom Brady (87.3) and Andrew Luck (87.0), were all almost even with Cutler in rating, all of them threw more touchdowns and only Dalton and Newton threw more picks.

You tell me, other than Dalton is there a QB in the group you wouldn’t take over Cutler?

The Bears are very competitive

with all of these playoff clubs at running back and wide receiver. With the possible exception of the Broncos, the Bears are better than any of those clubs at those positions.

The only 2013 playoff teams that aren’t clearly more talented on the offensive line than the Bears are Indianapolis, San Diego and Green Bay. The Bears line was effective most of the time this season, but it’s not capable of taking over games the way the 49ers, Eagles, Seahawks, Panthers, Broncos, Patriots and Chiefs can at times.

If you’re a Bears fan, you already know defensively they just don’t match up, particularly in the NFC. Seattle, the number one seed in the NFC also is first in the NFL in scoring defense. The second seeded Panthers are second in the league in fewest points allowed, the fifth seeded 49ers are third and the sixth seeded Saints are fourth.

In the AFC, the Bengals and Chiefs tied for fifth in the league in scoring defense, the Colts were ninth in the league, the Patriots 10th and the Char-

gers were 11th.

Nine of the 12 playoff teams are in the top 11 in scoring defense. In that top 11 only the Cardinals – seventh in points allowed and 10-6 – and the Dolphins – eighth and 8-8 – failed to make the playoffs.

The Bears were 30th in scoring defense in 2013, tied with the Redskins and only the Vikings were worse.

The Bears dramatic improvement on offense under Marc Trestman this year was exciting and at times a lot of fun to watch. But their decline from fifth in the NFL in total defense in 2012, eighth vs. the run and third in points allowed, is the reason they fell from 10-6 to 8-8 and are not currently a legitimate contender.

It is quite possible the Bears will improve at quarterback as Cutler spends more time with Trestman, but the only way they’re going back to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons and just the second time in the last eight is by turning over the defensive half of their roster with a lot more talent.

Of the teams paying the most guaranteed money for its starting quarterback, only one rewarded its backup more than $1 million in base salary last season: the Lions paid Shaun Hill $2.4 million (Kyle Orton restructured his deal to lower his base salary after Tony Romo got paid).

that doesn’t need nearly as much improvement as the other side of the ball.

That’s a reminder that we don’t know how McCown fits in the Bears’ priorities during the next few months with a defense to fix, but we have a good idea where he is among Cutler’s priorities.

“I’d like to see him come back,” Cutler said after signing his seven-year contract. “I know we’d love to have him back. I know Phil touched on it. We’d like to have him back in the building just because of the amount of work he does behind the scenes with the younger players and myself. Just the experience he brings to the quarterback room, it’s very valuable.

“We’ll see how that works out.”

McCown will have his suitors, and he’ll keep in mind his four kids who live in North Carolina as he decides what’s best for his family. By the time free agency opens March 11, the Bears will have a better grasp on their cap situation, how McCown would fit into the fold and if they can bring a fan and team favorite back next season.

Jay Cutler received the richest contract the franchise has signed, but what’s next for his backup?

Josh McCown played sensational football in his five starts and time in relief in two other games, while also igniting a quarterback controversy (albeit, outside the walls of Halas Hall) Josh McCown during what coach Marc Trestman referred to as Cutler’s best season.

McCown, who turns 35 in July, completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and one interception, good for a passer rating of 109.0.

“Love to have Josh back. I’ve expressed that to him,” general manager Phil Emery said Thursday. “Josh, through his play, has earned the right to have choices, and he’s got a lot of them and he’ll have a lot of them. He does

know he has a home here and that we’ll do everything we can to make it work if he decides he still wants to play here.”

Can the Bears afford McCown? It may seem like a ridiculous question when talking about a 35-year-old backup, journeyman quarterback who made $840,000 in 2013. But, as Emery said, McCown will have options.

The Bears signed Jason Campbell to a $3.5 million deal in 2012 with a $2 million signing bonus, so McCown and his representation could use that as a place to start.

Or, they could look at the highest-paid backups in the league. Sox fans savor rare highlight CRYSTAL LAKE – Every summer, fans stroll into Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen and ask Kyla Morris to switch one of the four TV sets to a White Sox game.

Just kidding.

“I’ve never personally seen it happen,” said Morris, a hostess at the restaurant. “Usually, the Cubs game is on.”

Of course.

In terms of popularity, the Cubs represent the alpha underdogs of baseball season in McHenry County. It’s Theo this, Starlin that – as a columnist, I’m guilty of feeding the beast – and it’s Wrigley this, rooftops that.

So let’s take a moment to salute the region’s White Sox fans. Frank Thomas has been elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame. That’s a huge deal.

Sox fans exist out here, by the way. At least, a few of them do.

Take Pat Walsh, for example. He’s a 44-year-old attorney from Crystal Lake who heard the news of Thomas’ induction just after 1 p.m.

“I was very excited,” Walsh said. “I believe I dropped an ‘F-bomb’ or two.”

Earmuffs, kids.

For the past few years, Sox games also have begged for blindfolds. Maybe you’re a Cubs fan, and you’re shrugging off the South Side’s long, lean seasons since 2005. So what, you’re saying. Big deal. My team is even worse.

First, true.

Second, at least you have a large group of fellow fans with whom to commiserate.

As for Sox fans?

They’re outnumbered badly, although exact figures are anyone’s guess. Two to one, at least. Maybe three to one?

Perhaps five to one?

“With my own family, I’m probably outnumbered 10 to one,” said Tony Penna, a McHenry County sheriff’s sergeant. “It’s no biggie. I can live with it.”

Penna, 48, is an exception to the rule. He grew up on the North Side – his family lived near Armitage and Cicero and

VIEWS Tom Musick eventually settled in Franklin Park – but he adopted the Sox as his favorite team because his father took him to both teams’ games.

In 2000, Penna’s father gave him a baseball that had been autographed by Thomas. Years later, Penna met Thomas at the annual Sox fan convention and shook his hand.

Both were great moments, as was Thomas’ Hall of Fame announcement. Before Wednesday, Penna said, the last great Sox highlight was the World Series more than eight years ago. Penna was in the seats for Games 1 and 2 at U.S. Cellular Field.

“The best moment ever was [Paul] Konerko’s grand slam,” Penna said. “Without a question.”

Walsh was at the World Series, too, as a fan at Game 2.

He grew up in Palatine, but his father was from the South Side, and Sox games were all that he watched as a child.

So Walsh brought his son Michael (now 15 years old), and his son Joe (now 13) to the World Series. His son Tommy (now 10) was too young to attend, he said. By now, all of the Walsh boys have followed in their father’s footsteps as avid fans. By now, Tommy is old enough to understand what he missed.

“He’s made it quite clear that the next time they make it to the World Series, he gets to go with me,” Walsh said.

But the next World Series could be many years away.

That makes the news about Thomas’ trip to Cooperstown even sweeter.

How badly did Sox fans need a new highlight?

“More than my next breath,” Walsh said.

Book Marks: Why Franz Kafka biography is a favorite book of 2013

By JOHN WINTERS More Content Now In 2006, German author and editor Reiner Stach told an American reporter there was no definitive biography of Franz Kafka.

Actually, there is. And he’s written it.

My favorite book of 2013 is actually two books, and they technically aren’t even new. They are the second and third parts of Stach’s trilogy on the life of Franz Kafka, and thanks to excellent translations

by Shelley Frisch, they are now available in English from Princeton University Press.

“Kafka: The Decisive Years” is the middle volume, covering the author’s most productive years, 1910 to 1915. Drawing on a decade’s worth of research and more than 4,000 pages of letters, diaries, journals and other sources, Stach takes us through the writing of “The Trial” and “The Metamorphosis,” as well as Kafka’s troubled relationship with Felice Bauer and the outbreak of World War I. “Kafka: The Years of Insight” caps the trilogy, and covers the writer’s life from 1916 to his death in 1924, and the disintegration of Kafka’s world into an existence marked by isolation, perceived failures, illness and misery on several fronts. (This year will see the publication of the translated first volume, covering Kafka’s youth.)

These are big books.

The middle volume runs to 581 pages in paperback, the final one goes 100 more.

“Kafka: The Decisive Years” and “Kafka: The Years of Insight,” the second and third parts of German author Reiner Stach’s trilogy on the life of Franz Kafka, has been translated by Shelley Frisch and made available in English from Princeton University Press. author who died at age 40 and whose official output is less than a dozen completed stories and three incomplete novels. However, if ever there was a writer one could call singular, Kafka is it. His spellbinding stories bespeak alienation, the brutality of the modern world and the irrationality of life itself. Meanwhile, his style is enigmatic and marked by a remarkable precision of language, ideas and images.

Kafka’s influence on other writers and world culture cannot be overstated.

Kafka the man was as confounding as he was brilliant. In the central volume of his trilogy, Stach takes us, blow by blow, through his relationship with Bauer.

It is long and drawn out, but it paints perhaps the most detailed picture of Kafka’s inner life. The backand-forth of this relationship occupies a good deal of “The Decisive Years,”

leading Stach to conclude: “It was the transition from the flight of the imagination to the drudgery of reality that was so difficult for Kafka ... .” Kafka dreaded the idea of marriage, fearing it would rob him of the time necessary to write. As he once put it to his friend and literary executor, Max Brod: “A non-writing writer is a monster courting insanity.”

This volume also details Kafka’s struggle to find his voice and his writerly sense of confidence, and finally begin to achieve some small literary successes.

When he begins coughing up blood early in the final volume, more failed romances, the famous “Letter to His Father,” and sinking fortunes begin to break him down, Kafka’s psychology and relationship to reality is brought into even sharper focus.

Stach makes the point that

Kafka created a personal mythology in order to both survive this world and to be able to write.

Kafka self-consciously fed off Kierkegaard, who wrote in his diary, “As soon as a man comes along ... who says: ‘However the world is, I shall stay with my original nature, which I am not about to change to suit what the world regards as good ... .’”

This sense of otherness shielded Kafka, and when disease strikes, he incorporates it into the myth, almost welcoming the freedom it gives him from the trivial aspects of life.

All of this is contextualized wonderfully by Stach, be it the Prague of the early 20th century, the Zionist movement, the mores of the time, the privations of the war years, the literary scenes of Prague and Berlin, or the world of tubercular sufferers.

Stach’s analysis is careful and always rooted in the facts of the life, or Kafka’s letters and diary, and only occasionally drawn from the stories and novels.

The writing is erudite, but not overly so, making these books both entertaining and enlightening for the expert and lay person alike. And it deserves mentioning again, Stach hit the lottery with a translator as fine as Frisch.

When I asked myself what book I most enjoyed reading the past year, these two volumes on Kafka kept leaping to the fore. They are as close to flawless as more than 1,200 pages on this most challenging of writers can be.

Grandma-to-be appears controlling, entitled and someone who will be more of an endurance test than a helping presence. They are right to set kind, yet firm, boundaries with her.

I wanted privacy during and after childbirth, and I’m grateful my mom and MIL respected our wishes. I needed time to establish a nursing routine, heal and get to know my baby before I was ready to host overnight guests.

My kids’ grandmas both have strong, loving relationships with their grandkids, so please remind “Family First” she’s not missing out on anything. C-reactive protein test offers evidence of heart disease Dear Doctor K: A few years ago my doctor told me that C-reactive protein was an important indicator of heart disease risk. At my last checkup, he didn’t mention it at all. Is it still considered important?

Dear Reader: C-reactive protein (CRP) is produced by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body. Inflammation contributes to atherosclerosis, the buildup of fatty deposits in blood vessel walls that’s responsible for most heart attacks and many strokes. CRP from inflamed plaques of atherosclerosis spills into the blood.

Inflammation not only makes plaques of atherosclerosis grow faster; inflammation inside the plaques also makes them more likely to rupture. When even a small plaque ruptures, it can quickly cause a blood clot that suddenly stops the flow of blood to one part of the heart. That can cause a heart attack.

CRP isn’t dangerous in and of itself. Rather, it’s a sign of inflammation in the body. A new test, called the high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) test, measures inflammation of the blood vessels.

People with the highest CRP levels are about twice as likely to suffer a heart attack or other cardiac event as people with the lowest levels. That’s why CRP is used, along with other risk factors (such as cholesterol and blood pressure), to estimate cardiovascular risk.

Your doctor may have been silent on the subject because the standards for using CRP are still evolving. For example, we don’t know what CRP target levels should be for men and women of different racial and ethnic groups.

For now, risk assessment is based on the following CRP levels: • Below 1 mg/L = low risk • 1-3 mg/L = average risk • Above 3 mg/L = high risk

If you are already considered high risk for heart disease or are being treated for it, a CRP test is not necessary. The results won’t change how your condition is managed.

If you have a moderate risk of heart attack, a hsCRP test might help to more accurately place you in a high- or low-risk category.

For example, if you are at moderate risk based on high cholesterol, you might move into the high-risk category if you also have elevated CRP. The result might be more aggressive treatment.

If you have other risk factors, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, ask your doctor about a hsCRP test. It might help to better assess your risk.

Like most issues in medicine, there is controversy about the value of measuring the hsCRP level in the blood. Some doctors think that it does not add important new information in calculating risk. As I look at the evidence, I think it is valuable.

An addict cannot control cocaine use Dr. Wallace: I’d like to respond to the 18-yearold guy who convinced his girlfriend that, even though he was snorting cocaine, he could control how often he used it and would never become addicted to the stuff. He probably believes that, but his girlfriend should not! In many cases, an addict is the last person to see the problem. Most addicts think they can control their drug use.

I know what I’m talking about because I am a recovering cocaine addict who has been clean for two years. I was introduced to the “wonders of cocaine” when I was a first-year student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Until that time, I had never been involved in drugs of any kind, not even marijuana.

At first I thought I could control when and how much cocaine I used. When I told this to my roommate, all he could do was laugh. He was the guy who showed me how to snort coke and he was addicted, and soon I had a new roommate because he stopped attending classes. My world collapsed when he split the scene.

He was the source of my coke and didn’t charge me anything. I was, in fact, using coke every other day, though I hardly realized it.

After my roommate left, I had to find another supplier. It wasn’t hard to do, but I had to pay for it – and it wasn’t cheap. At first, I started borrowing money from my parents, but after a while they became suspicious and stopped their flow of cash.

I had been a very good student, but I dropped out of the U of M midway through my second semester because of poor grades. But I still had a cocaine problem.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace To “earn” a fast buck, I turned to armed robbery. I bought a cheap handgun and started robbing liquor stores and small convenience stores in Detroit. My fourth robbery was my last one. I was identified even though I was wearing a disguise. A hidden camera caught my face before I put on my ski mask.

Getting caught actually turned out to be a blessing. I was sentenced to 21 months behind bars, but because of good behavior and an overcrowded facility, I was released in 14 months. I now have my life in good order. I’m back in school at Michigan State and plan to graduate, marry, and be a productive husband, father and citizen.

I can’t live out my dream to become a lawyer because of my prison time, but I will find a profession that will accept me for what I will do, not what I’ve already done. Some nights I fall asleep thinking about what my life would have been like if I had never taken that first snort. – Nameless, East Lansing, Mich.

Here is my final deal that was on the International Bridge Press Association short list for last year’s awards. It features an excellent defense by Shivam Shah (East) and Alex Roberts (West) for England against Poland at last year’s world youth championships in Taicang, China.

How did the defense go against five diamonds?

North opened with a Polish Club. It is usually bid with a balanced hand and 12-14 points, but it might be natural with five or more clubs and 12-17 points, or it could be any 18-plus pointer. After Shah’s three-heart pre-emptive overcall, South made a negative double. His four-diamond continuation was clearly forcing.

At the other table, the English North-South pair reached five diamonds by North, which was unbeatable. After East led a high heart, North could have taken 12 tricks, but decided on safety first.

Now back to Roberts’ lead problem. Many a West would be thinking it was lucky that the opponents stopped short of slam.

His hand is dreadful and partner also announced weakness.

Roberts, though, wondered if there might be a way to defeat the contract. Maybe partner had a club void. So, West’s opening lead was the club three.

After Shah ruffed, the spotlight was on him. How could he get his partner on lead for a second club ruff? There seemed to be only two chances: the diamond ace or the heart queen. The first would still be available in a moment, but not the second. East shifted to the heart two. West won with his queen and gave his partner another ruff for down one. Terrific!
