cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The former secretary of a St. Charles lawyer on Wednesday received a four-year prison sentence after she pleaded guilty to stealing more than $163,000 from his law firm.

Judge Clint Hull sentenced Jordan Terry, of Walkerton, Indiana, to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on Wednesday.

Terry, formerly of Geneva, will have a two-year period of mandatory supervised release and must pay full restitution to St. Charles attorney J. Jordan Terry Brick Van Der Snick, whose office she worked at for seven and a half years.

Between January 2011 and August 2011, Terry, 48, stole $163,373.86 from the Van Der Snick Law Firm and used the money to make payments on her personal credit card bill, according to evidence presented previously in court. Terry pleaded guilty to stealing from the law office in September.

After the sentencing, Terry was handcuffed and led out of the courtroom.

Van Der Snick’s family attended the hearing, as well as Terry’s ex-husband, John Terry, with his current wife.

John Terry said Jordan Terry’s sentence is too short. The Van Der Snicks agreed. “[The sentence] was never going to be enough, but we accept it under the circumstances, and Laura and I will move on,” J. Brick Van Der Snick said.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County judge said he plans to rule today on motions to dismiss a 2014 Geneva murder case.

Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress on Dec. 30 filed for dismissal in two motions, one for each indictment against Shadwick King of Geneva.

Childress and King were in court Wednesday for a hearing on the motions before Kane

County Circuit Judge James Hallock. They were joined by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams.

King, 47, was indicted in September on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen.

The two indictments state that King “by means of asphyxia” caused the death of his wife.

Asphyxia is not an act but a medical condition, and it has dozens, if not hundreds, of causes, Childress wrote in the

motions.

“It is nearly impossible to strategize and come up with a defense when the ... allegations against my defendant are so broad,” Childress said in court.

Sams disagreed with Childress in court Wednesday, saying that in a charge of first-degree murder, prosecutors do not have to indicate the means that caused the death.

Hallock, Sams and Childress agreed to bring the case back in court at 2:30 p.m. today.

Two Chicago women charged with credit card fraud in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Two Chicago women have been charged with credit card fraud after they were observed Tuesday using fraudulent credit cards at Wal-Mart, 801 N. Randall Road, Batavia, according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.

Charneice L. Chatman, 27, of the 2000 block of West Gladys Street, Chicago, and Antionette M. Jones, 27, of the 2700 block of West Lexington Avenue, Chicago, were charged in the incident, which occurred at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday.

“Some of those credit card accounts have been closed,” Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said.

Proposed North Aurora Residents face low temperatures restaurant nears completion Village trustees approve $20,000 TIF reimbursement

NORTH AURORA – Village trustees have approved a $20,000 reimbursement to the owner of a proposed restaurant at 321 S. Lincolnway as progress continues on the project.

Trustees at Monday’s North Aurora Village Board meeting approved the reimbursement after North Aurora Economic and Community Development Director Mike Toth updated them about the project’s progress. In 2011, trustees approved the $20,000 tax increment financing facade grant for the project.

“They are near completion of the work, both interior and exterior,” Toth said. “The work is essentially done with what they used the TIF funds

Toth said plans are to open the restaurant later this year.

“The property owner intends to utilize the funding to buy furniture for the restaurant and open in early 2015,” he said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Geneva resident Sharon Jones has a landline phone. It is a cordless, modern phone, but it is connected to a landline – and that’s the way Jones likes it.

“It does not control me,” Jones said. “I control it.”

Jones is in a demographic that is changing, as more people are dropping landline phones and opting for wireless phones – either cellphones or voice over Internet – for their home.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2012 through its National Health Interview Survey that almost 36 percent of all homes were wireless only.

Local governments can levy up to 6 percent for their telecommunications taxes, so the decline in landlines also translates into a decline in revenue, as well. Kane County governments have coped with the loss or made it up through other revenue streams, local officials said.

For example, in Sugar Grove, telecommunications revenue was $330,848 for fiscal year 2011, but now is down to $283,762 for fiscal year 2014.

“We have replaced that lost revenue with other revenue sources,” Finance Director Pat Chamberlin wrote in an email.

Elburn Village Administrator Erin Willrett wrote in an email that the village has lost $18,797 in telecommunications tax revenue over the past three years. In 2012, Elburn had $206.3 million in telecommunications tax revenue, reduced to $187.5 million by the end of 2014, she said.

“Although the telecommunications tax has gone down, other items have gone up, such as a gaming income,

and we’ve seen an increase in building permits within the village,” Willrett wrote.

Bill Hannah, finance director for North Aurora, acknowledged the decline.

From fiscal year 2010-11 to fiscal year 2013-14 the village has had a 12 percent decrease in telecommunications revenue, equivalent to a loss of $45,570, he said.

“We have a lot of different revenue sources that makes

up a total pot of revenues,” Hannah said. “We have not had to take any specific action because of it. ... I think we have a diverse base of revenue, and it does not have a significant impact.”

Hannah said 3 percent of the telecommunications tax goes to capital projects, and 1 percent goes to the village’s general operations.

Batavia Finance Director Peggy Colby said the city proj-

ects to collect $281,000 less in telecommunications taxes in 2015 than it did in 2008.

“We anticipated it was going to continue in that direction, and it has,” Colby said. “We knew more and more people were giving up their landlines. And why not – it makes sense. I gave up my landline a year ago.”

St. Charles Assistant Finance Director Julie Herr said they were forecasting $1.13 million in revenue from the telecommunications tax for fiscal year 2014-15. That is less than the $1.15 million collected in fiscal year 2013-14 and the $1.2 million collected in fiscal year 2012-13.

“We are still in the budget process – very early in it,” Herr said. “At this point, there has not been anything that has been discussed, as far as revenue enhancements, to make that up. It is something in the long term we are going to have to look at.”

In Geneva, the telecommunications tax revenue for the 2012-13 fiscal year was about $1.07 million, and $1.02 million in revenue is budgeted for the current 2014-15 fiscal year, officials said.

Because Jones has a landline and a cellphone, Geneva collects its tax on both.

“I don’t care for my cellphone that much,” Jones said. “I forget to carry it with me.”

Kane County leaders working to protect $2.5 million revenue source

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County leaders recently learned that upward of $2.5 million in budgeted revenue could be in jeopardy but hope to make the possible loss a moot point.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told the Executive Committee on Wednesday that the Kane County Sheriff’s Office has encountered challenges with its pro-

gram with the U.S. Marshals Service.

The program involves housing federal inmates from the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Former Sheriff Pat Perez has said that revenues from the relationship helped fund the new shooting range, which opened last year.

Lt. Pat Gengler said Wednesday afternoon that, due to staffing shortages, housing a full complement of

federal inmates is starting to become a problem.

In the short-term, he said, the U.S. Marshals will take back about half of the inmates. Gengler did not have specific numbers.

The issue will be revisited if and when staffing levels improve, he said, noting the shortage was caused by a variety of reasons.

Executive Committee members Wednesday morning asked about the ramifica-

tions should the county lose its contract with the U.S. Marshals.

Onzick said the program was budgeted to bring in about $2.5 million this year.

County Board member Cristina Castro, who chairs the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, said she was “flabbergasted” by the possibility. She asked if there is anything the county can do because nobody wants to see the revenue “go out the win-

dow.”

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen told the Executive Committee that action had been taken to maintain the relationship.

“We’re working together with the sheriff to do everything we can to protect that $2.5 million revenue,” he said.

Board member John Hoscheit said the Finance Committee, which he chairs, would evaluate the consequences of any lost revenue.

Trustees override veto to keep police chief, trustee offered a written legal opinion from her firm that state law allows police chiefs to be removed in a two-step process, when the village president appoints someone else, and the board majority confirms that appointment. State law does not support a term limit for a police chief, according to the opinion.

“A presidential discharge alone is not sufficient,” according to the legal opinion.

Village attorney William Braithwaite said the board authorized Hoffman’s appointment for a specific term, which ended Dec. 27. But Tappendorf disagreed, saying “the contract term exceeded state law.”

In other action, Smith said Lenkaitis moved to Eldorado and no longer lives in Campton Hills, requiring a replacement be appointed. Lenkaitis has said he was working in Eldorado, but still was a resident of the village. Andersen said Smith would have to prove in court that Lenkaitis moved.

Smith said she did not want to spend village resources to prove he no longer lives in the village. Trustees Andersen, Blecker and George voted not to remove Lenkaitis as a trustee. Kopec voted to remove him, and Millette abstained.

CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills trustees secured both the position of the village’s police chief and one of its trustees at special meeting Tuesday, defeating the village president’s attempt to remove them.

Police Chief Daniel Hoffman and Trustee Al Lenkaitis Jr. will continue to serve the village, as a result of the board majority’s actions.

Trustees overrode Village President Patsy Smith’s veto of their vote last month to extend Hoffman’s appointment to May 5, the end of Smith’s term.

Smith had decided not to reappoint the chief when his contract expired Dec. 27 and chose a sergeant to replace him, but the board did not accept the change. Trustees Lenkaitis, Susan George, Harry Blecker and Laura Andersen voted to reconsider Hoffman’s extended contract. James Kopec voted “no” and Michael Millette passed. Then they voted 5-1, with Millette voting “yes” to extend Hoffman’s employment agreement, and Kopec voting “no,” effectively overriding Smith’s veto.

The Kane County Electoral Board is set to hear testimony about the objection against Scott Coryell’s nominating petition at 10 a.m. Monday in the conference room at the Kane County Clerk’s Office. The clerk’s office is in Building B on the Kane County Government Center campus, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.

Filed by Robert Handley, the objection asserts Coryell’s

name should not be on the April 7 ballot because he failed to file a receipt for statement of economic interest. Mary Ryan, an administrator with the district, said two seats of the five-member board will be up for election in April: Handley’s and Chuck Dunham’s. Both will be seeking another term, she said.

In addition to Coryell, the incumbents are being challenged

by Pam Turriff, Ryan said.

County Clerk Jack Cunningham, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell or their designees will make up the Electoral Board. The group is set to reconvene at 10 a.m. Jan. 15 to vote on the decisions from the objections heard Monday, according to the release.

Fox River and Countryside candidate faces objection

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council and Geneva School District 304 are considering giving AJR Filtration a $920,600 property tax rebate as an incentive to move its headquarters from St. Charles to Batavia. Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting recommended approval of the rebate. The full Batavia City Council now will consider the recommendation.

AJR Filtration, which manufactures dust collection, liquid and custom filter bags and cartridges, has two facilities in St. Charles and another in Lake County. Northern Builders Inc. proposed to build and lease AJR Filtration a 263,000-square-foot industrial building at 1252 Pierson Drive in Batavia, across Pierson from Suncast. The land is within the boundaries of the Geneva School District.

The lease would be for 12 years and six months. AJR currently employs 250 people at its St. Charles and Lake County facilities, according to Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston, and plans to

grow its workforce to 400 as part of the proposed expansion and consolidation.

As proposed, AJR Filtration would receive the property tax rebate over a nine-year period.

The city would rebate the company about $94,000 in property taxes, and the Geneva School District would rebate AJR about $827,000. During that same time, AJR is expected to generate $285,000 in property taxes for the city and $2.5 million in property taxes for the Geneva School District, Aiston said. Plans are for AJR Filtration to occupy the new building no later than next year, he said. Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown voiced concerns about the proposed rebate.

“I’m afraid once we do this, we will be asked to do it over and over again,” Brown said.

Other aldermen backed the proposal.

“This is probably the best scenario we could have to incentivize a business to come here,” 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said.

Once the building is done and occupied, the property value is expected to increase from $2.1 million to $11.2 million, Ais-

ton said. During the first year of the agreement, Batavia is ex-

pected to receive about $27,000 in taxes revenues and Geneva

The restriction applies only to how many can be seated once the election is held, they said.

GENEVA – After three Kaneland District 302 hopefuls circulated their nominating petitions, four objectors charged that they used the wrong form and did not inform petition signers what township they live in. They said the candidates should be knocked off the April 7 ballot.

But hopefuls Dan Nagel and Jerry Elliott of Sugar Grove Township, through their attorney, and incumbent Tony Valente of Sugar Grove countered that state law does not specifically say nominating petitions have to include the candidate’s township.

The objections were heard Wednesday in front of the Kane County Electoral Board at the Kane County Clerk’s office.

The three members of the panel said they will give written decisions in 15-minute increments starting at 1:45 p.m.

Monday at the clerk’s office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., in the conference room of the Kane County Clerk’s Office, Building B, Geneva.

Panelists are supervisor of elections Suzanne Fahnestock, the designee for Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and Kane County Circuit Clerk Thomas Hartwell.

Gale Pavlak and Lynn McHenry of Elburn, and Peter Lopatin and Teresa Witt of Sugar Grove filed the objections. Pavlak, Lopatin and Witt are members of the school board seeking re-election. McHenry is a social sciences teacher at Kaneland High School.

Eight candidates filed for four seats on the Kaneland school board. The others are Ryan Kerry of Elburn and Pamela Voorhees of Maple Park.

Attorney Kelly Helland represented Elliott and Nagel.

Valente represented himself.

Objectors said when candidates used the wrong form and did not state their township, petition signers were misled.

“Nominating papers for school board is a serious endeavor,” Lopatin said. “It’s

not complex. ... I made sure to use the correct form. ... I made sure I followed all the rules. ...

Details do matter. These are legal documents. Using proper forms does serve a public purpose.”

But Helland and Valente countered that the petitions were in substantial conformance with the election law and the school code, and candidates should be on the ballot.

“Statute and case law state that minor inconsistencies or clerical errors do not rise to the level of removing a candidate,” Helland said. “There is nothing in the election guide

OBITUARIES LORENA M. BRADDY Born: July 6, 1925; in Parnell, MO Died: Jan. 7, 2015 Lorena Marcella “Sally” Braddy age 89, of St. Charles passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2015.

She was born July 6, 1925, the daughter of Vea and Izole Arnold in Parnell, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Floyd E. Braddy on February 3, 1945, and spent the next 69 years together. Sally was most proud of growing up with 17 brothers and sisters. She always carried their pictures and would talk about them to everyone.

She is survived by her husband Floyd, son Floyd Jr. (Butch) and wife Linda, the love of her life granddaughter Susan (Larry) Braddy-Suhr, and Great Grandchildren Allison, Abbigail, and Anderson.

She is also survived by brothers and sisters Kenyon, Carl Jay, Georgine, Bonnie, Sharon, and Sandra and numerous nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Vea and Izola Aronld, In-Laws Arthur and Ruth Braddy, brothers and sisters Vernon, Donnice, Kelly, Ronald, George, Garland, Carmen, La Quita, Lestel, Shirley, Lloyd, and Eddie.

Along with caring for her family, Kelly was active in her church, leading a women’s Bible study group and assisting in the church nursery. She was also a member of a close-knit community of friends and neighbors.

Following her divorce in 2008, Kelly returned to school to become a Registered Nurse. While attending nursing school, Kelly was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. After a valiant battle with this disease, Kelly returned to school and completed her course of study in 2013. Realizing it was not a matter of if, but when the cancer would return, Kelly chose to move back to Lakeview to be near family after her youngest son graduated from high school, which she did in October of 2013. Within weeks of starting her job as an RN

at Altercare in Big Rapids, Kelly’s cancer returned, and after a brief time of illness, was received into the arms of God. A funeral service in celebration of her life and faith will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Lakeview Community Church, 8980 Howard City-Edmore Road (M-46), with visitation from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the service. Rev. David Hansen will serve as officiant. Interment will be in Dickerson Whitsell Cemetery in Lakeview.

Howard Parker Price, of Lake in the Hills, died January 6, 2015, at Journey Care in Woodstock, IL, after a brief battle with leukemia.

He was born June 19, 1936, in Lebanon, Tennessee, to Clyde N. and Irene Price. He graduated from Tennessee Technological University in 1959, with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

Howard spent his career in telecommunications beginning with the REA in Washington D.C., where he worked on standards for telephone circuits. He was also an engineer supervisor for Anaconda Wire and Cable Company and then for most of his career a General Manager for C ntel Telephone.

At C ntel, he focused on regional switching centers, network design, lightening protection and fiber optic deployment. He retired with Sprint Telephone and then continued working in his field as a consultant with

Lebanon, Tennessee next week.

He was present at Kennedy’s inauguration and funeral, and also stood at the stage during Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Howard was an active member of Crystal Lake Evangelical Free Church. He taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for most of his life. He had a profound love for Jesus Christ, singing praise songs, hymns and sharing Christ’s love with all that he met. Howard was also a member of The Gideons International.

Taking on first finals My fingers flew over the keyboard as I entered a critically important search into Google: “final exam calculator.” I tried the first link, entering my current grade in the class, the weight of the final exam and the course average I wished to have after the final.

The site promptly told me the score I’d have to get on the final in order to obtain my desired semester grade.

I bet I’m not the only student who’s done this in the past couple weeks. After all, it’s nearly the end of first semester, at least in Geneva.

What does that mean for the average high school student?

Final exams. And yes, they’re a big deal, especially for freshmen finishing up their first semester of high school. They’re worth 20 percent of our grade for the semester. They require

a 90-minute class period for completion. And, recently, our teachers have been talking about them nonstop.

Since it’s my freshman year, I get to take my first finals in a week. I’ve received review packets and study guides, sat through multiple meetings on exam preparation and listened to my fellow classmates emote about their increased stress levels.

Even when we’re working on something else in classes, it seems that finals provide an ominous undertone.

The question I’ve gotten from many peers is, “Are you nervous for finals?” I guess there are multiple ways I could answer this. If you’re looking for the most concise response possible, I’d have to say yes. I mean, who isn’t?

But I also don’t see the point in sleepless nights and over-the-top anxiety, just for a couple tests. I’m definitely not minimizing the importance of these exams; I agree that they’re something to be prepared for. Prepping for them might even teach me – gasp – time management and study skills! However, I don’t believe that they’re quite as big a deal as students and teachers make them.

So, yes, I’m nervous. But not so nervous that I’ll risk an entire night of sleep or my sanity just for the sake of a

test.

Think about it: A final exam makes up 20 percent of the semester grade in a class.

All things considered, that’s not even that much. The vast majority of the course average is made up of other tests and quizzes, class participation, homework and projects. So even though it’s definitely worth a decent chunk of points, if someone is doing well in class and does fine on the final, their grade shouldn’t be overly affected.

Additionally, how important are finals in the long run?

At a finals preparation meeting, an administrator mentioned that final exam grades go on our official transcript.

In most students’ minds, “transcript” equals “college.”

However, don’t colleges look at many other things in

addition to one final exam grade? SAT and ACT scores, extracurricular activities, academic rigor ... so much more goes into a college’s decision to accept someone than just a score on one test.

So, next week, when some students are obsessing about their fear for finals, part of me will be right there with them.

But part of me also knows that in the end, there are way more important things to spend my energy on.

Now, let me get back to that geometry review packet ...

Progress at the pump? Time to raise gas tax THE WASHINGTON POST The price of crude oil dipped below $50 a barrel on Monday. National gasoline prices average a little over $2 a gallon.

On principle and on politics, now is the best time Washington has seen in years to raise the federal gas tax.

Congress last year refilled the Highway Trust Fund, which pays for a range of transportation projects across the country, with a familiar strategy: shortterm budget gimmickry.

Instead of providing local transportation planners with the certainty they need to plan and execute large projects, Congress set the trust fund to run dry again in May. Instead of agreeing on a

robust infrastructure policy that invests rationally in the economy, lawmakers scraped another $11 billion from corners of the federal budget.

The reason is simple: Members of Congress don’t want to raise the gas tax, unchanged at 18.4 cents a gallon since 1993.

The gas tax operates on a straightforward principle: Those who use the roads should pay for them. But over the past two decades, the value of the revenue the tax produces has dropped by about a third – partly because of inflation and partly because cars have become more fuel-efficient.

This constrains the amount of money Congress is willing to put into transportation and encourages overuse of the roads at the expense of

the general taxpayer.

Lawmakers could have headed off some of the problem in 1993 by indexing the gas tax to inflation, but they put that responsibility on later congresses, which failed to act responsibly.

Now, with lower oil prices, the politics of raising the gas tax should be easier, the potential backlash blunted

by Americans who don’t feel as pinched at the pump.

True, lower gas prices will stimulate the economy to some degree, and raising the gas tax would reduce that effect.

But raising it now would restrain present and future demand for gasoline, encouraging Americans to maintain some of the resilience to oil price volatility that the country built up in recent years.

FreshGround Roasting aims to educate customers Business opened in the fall in Geneva

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – FreshGround Roasting won’t sell you a cup of coffee. But the business will teach you how to brew one.

“We are trying to educate people on what good coffee is and how to brew it, and also teach them where it comes from,” said Eric Andersen of Geneva, who owns FreshGround with his wife, Krista. “Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, behind oil. We think it is important that you get your coffee from people who are practicing sustainable farming practices, as well as growing quality crops.”

FreshGround opened at 321 Stevens St., Suite N, Geneva, in October after previously being located in West Chicago for about three years. The new location is almost three times bigger than FreshGround’s previous location.

“We have more production room, and we are also hoping to have more people come in and do brewing classes and coffee cuppings,” Andersen said. “Coffee cuppings are kind of like wine tastings, except for coffee.”

The business sells a variety of coffee by the pound that is roasted at the store.

Along with its store, FreshGround Roasting also has a wholesale and catering business. The store, for the most part, works with missions that are working directly with coffee farmers.

FreshGround works with six or eight different farms all over the world, including farms in Honduras, Mexico, Ethiopia, Sumatra and New Guinea.

“In Central America, there’s an organization called Growers First that’s working directly with farmers there,” Andersen said. “In Ethiopia, we work with an organization called the New Covenant Foundation. That’s a medical mission and church plant organization, but they also work directly with farmers

As an evangelical Christian, Andersen said he thought working with such organizations was the right thing to do.

It also helps to ensure quality control, he said.

“We know the people that are working on the farms, and we know what they are doing quality control-wise, so we’re able to get a better quality coffee,” Andersen said. “The buyers that we work with are working directly with the farmers, so they’ve tasted the coffee at the farm and know exactly what the quality level is like. And they’re able to work with the farmers if the quality of the coffee isn’t up to where it needs to be.”

Each coffee has its own unique flavor, he said, which customers can discover through the coffee cuppings the store holds.

“If they are roasted properly, you can taste the individual flavors from every

origin, and they are all unique,” Andersen said. “An Ethiopian coffee is radically different from a coffee from Sumatra, which is radically different from a Honduras coffee. They all have different tastes and flavors.”

Andersen eschews the popular single-serving coffee brewing systems that exist today.

“There is a convenience factor with the K-Cups, but you do not get the quality out of a K-Cup as you get from brewing it yourself,” he said. “And it really only takes five minutes to brew a quality cup of coffee.”

Because education is a key part of what FreshGround does, the store conducts classes every other week on how people can brew coffee on their own, Andersen said.

To cut down the cost ever-so-slightly, Thursdays, there is a $10 (per person) discount applied to the “Gaetapas” tasting menu, and Monday the eatery adds a $45 pasta tasting to its menu.

The restaurant makes its own limoncello and offers cocktails. Most of the options on the wine list are available only by the bottle, but there are a handful of reds and whites available by the glass.

Try the Rocca dei Mori Copertino, Puglia, ($10 a glass) for a delicious, full-bodied red.

My dining companion and I traipsed through a wintry landscape to Gaetano’s, just before a heavy snowfall Monday evening, when we were greeted by a warm fire upon entering the restaurant. The cozy atmosphere continued throughout with warm, Venetian-style, golden-hued walls with a starry-night trim and block-like dark wooden tables set with benches and chairs fit with pillows. Pops of color provided by the eclectic lanterns hanging from the ceiling provided an old-world charm to the restaurant’s interior.

The service was impeccable from start to finish; our waiter knew the menu well, and our water glasses, which included a cucumber slice to add freshness, were always filled to the brim. All of the pastas are made from scratch, and the restaurant uses fresh, quality ingredients.

To start, we ordered Datteri con Polpettina ($11) – dates stuffed with beef and chorizo, wrapped in pancetta, baked in the restaurant’s wood-burning oven and

served with coconut tomato sauce accented with cumin, coriander and jalapeño – and the Calamari Ripiene al Porto Rosa ($12) – tempura-fried calamari rolled with asparagus, topped with sun-dried tomato spicy shrimp sauce and served with soy-lime citronette and borlotti aioli.

Once the calamari hit my dining companion’s lips, she said, “This is my new favorite thing in the world right now.”

The calamari, which was served in the vein of a sushi roll, was tender, with a texture of silk, while the tempura and asparagus provided a layer of crunch.

Another appetizer worth noting is the Capesante al Cioccolato ($14), a unique dish with fresh-harvested scallops dusted with cocoa powder and roasted in a wood-burning oven and served over king oyster mushrooms, chocolate vinaigrette and watercress with a finish of 25-year-old balsamico from Modena.

For our entrees, we ordered the Involtini di Maiale ($29) – crab-stuffed pork layered with shrimp over a bed of garlic-mashed potatoes in a savory sauce – and the

tossed with wild mushrooms sautéed with garlic, shallots and white wine and finished with shaved Parmigiano.

Thick noodle ribbons in the dish intertwined with a healthy portion of hearty, perfectly-cooked wild mushrooms, giving the meal a rustic, earthy flair, while the Involtini’s rich and savory flavor combinations tickled the palate.

I cannot stress what a lovely experience I had at Gaenato’s in Batavia. Oozing old-world, eccentric charm, Gaetano’s is a place you visit to get away from it all; to let time stand still, even for just an evening; and to enjoy the true fruits of life – great food, wine and kinship – the essence of Italy.

BATAVIA – Over the years, Gaetano’s in Forest Park has been recognized as a superior Italian dining spot across Chicago, raking in exemplary ratings from Zagat, Chicago’s Best and Open Table. He has quite a laundry list of achievements, including preparing state dinners for the presidents of Italy; serving as team Italy’s chef in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City; and receiving the “Ospitalita Italiana” award given by the Italian government for having an “authentic” Italian restaurant – a seal of approval to which only 600 restaurants in the world can lay claim, states the site.

Gaetano is an intrepid culinary trailblazer, intricately playing with multi-tiered flavor combinations that you cannot get anywhere else. The restaurant boasts an extensive menu, and a specials menu that changes often.

Spartans to host Jack’s Army Shootout St. Francis will play host to a shootout

HITTING REWIND St. Charles North continued its upswing with a dominant performance Saturday against Kaneland in a United Center matinee.

The North Stars have won seven of their past nine games, with both losses during that span coming Dec. 31 at the final day of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament against Benet (by one point) and West Aurora.

COMING ATTRACTION Weather-permitting, Friday night will be a big one in the Tri-Cities as Geneva welcomes Larkin while St. Charles North visits Batavia. Each of those teams is chasing St. Charles East in the Upstate Eight River; the Saints are the last remaining team that is unscathed in conference play.

Loudon Vollbrecht took quite a tumble during Geneva’s East Aurora Holiday Tournament loss against Neuqua Valley.

The 295-pound junior post player returned during the fourth quarter after receiving treatment for the third-quarter spill, but his back flared up after the game, and Vollbrecht missed the tournament finale against Wheaton Academy.

Vollbrecht said Wednesday he’s back to being 100 percent after returning to practice Saturday, and he should be ready to roll for Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference River matchup with Larkin.

A game scheduled for tonight at Elgin was scrapped by a second straight day of school closings because of the extreme cold.

“I’m very thankful it came back so quickly,” Vollbrecht said. “Actually, I was surprised.”

Vollbrecht said the hard fall resulted in a mild muscle tear in his lower back but several days of rest, plus stretching and some Advil, helped him recover swiftly.

Vollbrecht’s return is crucial for the Vikings. He’s emerged as Geneva’s top interior threat this season, at least when senior forward Nate Navigato is playing on the wing. Without Vollbrecht, the Vikings (10-2) struggled against sub-.500 Wheaton Academy, escaping with a 54-53 win to take third place in the tournament.

In addition to Vollbrecht bouncing back, the Vikings also anticipate the return of senior guard Pace Temple, who has practiced with the team this week. Temple missed the season’s first 12 games with a football-related knee injury.

Temple could be a difference-maker for the Vikings once he plays his way into game shape.

“He’s looked really good [in practice],” Vollbrecht said. “It doesn’t look like his injury slowed him down at all.

I’m really excited to start playing with him again.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE GENEVA – Despite switching parent teams from the Cubs to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Kane County Cougars will retain a strong connection to the Cubs for the 2015 season.

The Cougars, in conjunction with the Diamondbacks, announced Wednesday that former Cubs infielder Mark Grudzielanek will be the team’s manager in 2015, the 25th anniversary season of the Cougars franchise.

Grudzielanek was named the 16th manager in franchise history. Grudzielanek, 44, enjoyed a 15-year playing career in the major leagues that included an All-Star selection in 1996 and a Gold Glove Award a

decade later as a second baseman in 2006. In 1,802 big league games, Grudzielanek batted .289 with 90 home runs, 640 RBI and 2,040 hits.

His 54 doubles in 1997 were a major league best that season.

Grudzielanek Mark Grudzielanek was an 11thround selection by the Montreal Expos in the 1991 draft and he played with the Expos (1995 to 1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1998 to 2002), Cubs (2003 to 2004), St. Louis Cardinals (2005), Kansas City Royals (2006 to 2008) and Cleveland Indians (2010). As a minor leaguer, Grudzielanek spent the 1992 season in the Midwest

League for the now-defunct Rockford Expos.

Doug Bochtler will serve as Cougars pitching coach in 2015. This will be Bochtler’s fifth season with the Diamondbacks organization. Bochtler was pitching coach at Class-A South Bend last season with the team’s pitching ERA of 3.49 ranking fourth in the Midwest League. Bochtler pitched in the major leagues from 1995 through 2000, going 9-18 with a 4.57 ERA and 215 strikeouts in 220 games.

Vince Harrison was named Cougars hitting coach. This will be Harrison’s second season as a coach with the Diamondbacks after beginning his coaching career with Rookie-Advanced Missoula last season. Harrison spent a

portion of five minor league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets and Miami Marlins organizations.

The Cougars’ field staff also includes athletic trainer Rafael Freitas and strength and conditioning coach Sean Light.

Freitas remains in the Midwest League after serving as South Bend’s athletic trainer last season, while Light spent 2014 with Short-A Hillsboro.

Scott Anderson rounds out the field staff, with the 2015 season being his sixth year with the Cougars as clubhouse manager.

Last season, the Diamondbacks minor league affiliates

went a combined 473-365 (.564), with the second-best winning percentage behind Texas (.565). The affiliates tied a club mark with five teams in the postseason.

Opening Night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is set for April 9 when the Cougars host Cedar Rapids at 6:30 p.m.

The Cougars are looking to defend the Midwest League championship after winning the league title during a historic 2014 campaign that broke numerous franchise records.

Last fall, the Cougars were recognized by Minor League Baseball as the “Best Team” in the Minor League Baseball (“MiLBY”) awards.

“We’re all driving by the stadium, and I go, ‘ Wouldn’t that be cool to one day come back here?’ ” Blake Barry said. “And sure enough, here we are.”

They won’t be the only Barrys backing the Redbirds.

Among Barry’s three older siblings, two have returned to the family’s roots in the Lone Star State and plan to attend the game.

Sister Alicia lives and works in the nearby Dallas region after majoring in hospitality and event planning at Arkansas.

Brother Bryce, a former Butler linebacker, teaches social studies and assists on the freshman and varsity football staffs at Spring Hill High School in Houston.

Erienne Barry, the third of Blake and Donna’s four children, will be absent, as she has returned to campus at Boise State.

Blake Barry, a defensive back at Stephen F. Austin in the mid1980s, estimates there will be 15 to 20 family members on hand.

He’s one of three children and his wife is one of 13, and many kin have remained in Texas.

“Everyone’s just excited,” Brannon Barry said. “Being able to go really home-home is just awesome to have the support throughout my family.”

It’s especially gratifying for Barry’s parents, who relocated the family a few times to accommodate Blake’s position at St. Charles-based Aquascape, a supplier of products related to manmade pond development and backyard water features.

Alicia and Bryce were born in St. Louis. Erienne and Brannon are native Texans.

“Now that I see the snow outside, I probably should look at going in reverse here,” Blake Barry chuckled. “Back down south.”

While it’s much too soon to tell, Brannon Barry acknowledges he might be due for a move of his own to another position group on the Redbirds’ depth chart.

He added more than 25 pounds of muscle since his first day on campus, making his latest listing 6-foot-4 and 227 pounds.

Given his size and defensive background at East, that could trigger a shift to tight end or linebacker if Barry elects not to remain at receiver. He already plays multiple positions on the scout team, with Dicken calling him “like a sponge.”

“We could probably give him scout team player of the week every week,” Dicken said, “but we’ve got to pass it around a little bit.”

Following his sideline protocol, Barry echoes another Dicken sentiment: “Wherever my body takes me,” Barry said, “is going to be where I wind up.”

Barry already anticipates where he’ll be headed in the short-term, after his triumphant return to Texas.

He’s thinking about Sunday morning, just as he’s once again pondered how appreciative he is for the chance to absorb everything that surrounds the college football experience.

At that point, Barry will allow himself to turn that gratitude into fuel for the Redbirds’ 2015 season opener, set for Sept.

5 at Iowa.

“Going into the game,” Barry said, “obviously everything is focused on the biggest point of the season, which is the national championship. … Then probably when I roll out of bed, I’ll be focused on getting ready for Iowa, which will be a really big thing in the fall.”

and the numbers we saw, but the bar was set high after his breakout season.

Marshall played through an ankle injury, part of the reason his numbers were the lowest since his rookie season. He missed the final three games with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung. There were more stories about Marshall’s sessions with the media or on Twitter than his game-changing plays.

Marquess Wilson got plenty of attention in training camp, but was set back with a fractured clavicle and didn’t show much in the final two months to show he is the next big thing in the Bears’ offense. Josh Morgan was mostly a nonfactor at the No. 3 wideout spot, along

with Santonio Holmes during his stint with the Bears. Dante Rosario made some nice catches and was capable as a lead blocker, but No. 2 tight end is still an offseason need.

Arguably the biggest problem with the top two wideouts, considered the best duo in the game heading into the season, was penalties. Brandon Marshall was penalized seven times (two were declined) and Jeffery had an astonishing five false start penalties among his seven flags. Bennett shouldn’t be absolved when discussing flags, either, as he also was penalized seven times (two declined), including two offensive holding penalties.

Moments that mattered: The best highlight from a receiver

had to be Marshall’s one-handed catch in San Francisco, playing on a bad ankle, and that was one of three touchdown grabs.

Jeffery’s 74-yard catch in Atlanta would be a close second.

Sticking with the theme of our section on Cutler, how about Marshall’s lost fumble in Week One against the Bills? It was his first lost fumble since 2011, came in Bills territory and led to a Buffalo field goal.

Not to take away from Bennett’s sensational season, but his two memorable moments were the almost-touchdown at the end of the first half against the Packers, and the missed block out in front of Matt Forte on a screen pass against Carolina that likely would have led to a touchdown.

Bears GM candidate Ballard comes with college coaching background

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Twenty years ago, Chris Ballard was evaluating talent in Texas, helping recruit players for Texas A&M-Kingsville, a school near the Gulf of Mexico that has produced many NFL players, from John Randle to current Bear Roberto Garza.

For the past 15 years, Ballard has been evaluating NFL talent, and his resume could be good enough to make him the next Bears general manager.

Ballard reportedly inter-

viewed with George McCaskey, Ted Phillips and Ernie Accorsi on Wednesday. Lake Dawson and Brian Gaine, who interviewed Tuesday, both played in the NFL before joining scouting staffs. Ballard’s coaching background could help set him apart.

Ron Harms, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, hired Ballard in 1994, a few years after failing to land Ballard as a player. Ballard played wide receiver at Wisconsin. Ballard was coaching at a high school in Texas, and the head coach called Harms.

“This particular coach had

sent me another young man that had been on his staff and ended up doing quite well with us,” Harms said Wednesday.

“He said, ‘I’ve got another one that’s a good one.’”

Ballard visited Harms and joined the staff as a graduate assistant before being hired full-time. He coached wide receivers in 1995, the secondary in 1995 to 99 and was the defensive coordinator in 2000.

“I could see that he had a lot of skill,” Harms said of his first impression of Ballard.

“He was an excellent coach, good recruiter, got along well with everybody, had good peo-

ple skills. That’s how I ended up with him, and I felt very fortunate to have him. “... Chris is a likable guy and everybody liked him. He didn’t ruffle any feathers.

I don’t know anybody that didn’t think well of him.”

As far as Ballard’s eye for spotting talent, Harms said there was no question about that.

“Obviously he had that talent. He could spot that,” Harms said about Ballard’s ability on the recruiting trail and judging talent on the roster. “He was pretty thorough about it. He was always very

energetic about people he was recruiting, and energetic in selling them to us and the rest of the staff.”

Harms, who coached for 33 years at three different programs and won one NAIA title, explained how Ballard’s experience with a coaching staff could give him an edge when it comes to the general manager position.

“I think it’s an advantage,” he said. “It’s kind of like knowing every aspect of your business from the bottom to the top. Obviously, having those kinds of experiences have served him well.”

What worked: The best, most consistent player in this group was probably Martellus Bennett, who set a franchise record for catches by a tight end (90) and was second on the team in receiving yards with 916, a career high. What’s amazing is that Bennett could have had even bigger numbers, as a few key plays that resulted in picks or incomplete passes came when the tight end was open.

He worked the seam and the flat well, played through injuries and was a top target for Jay Cutler.

Alshon Jeffery finished with strong numbers, leading the team in receiving yards (1,133) and touchdowns (10), and Brandon Marshall dominated in San Francisco and had a big game in Atlanta.

What didn’t: Expectations were not met all across the wide receiver unit. Jeffery spoiled us in 2013 with his highlight-reel, jump-ball catches down the sideline or in the end zone, and as often as Cutler tried this season, they did not result in completions at nearly the same rate. It would have been asking a lot for him to duplicate those kinds of catches

Lower heels, wider shoes help treat Morton’s neuroma Dear Doctor K: I have something called Morton’s neuroma. Can you explain what it is, and what I can do to relieve the pain?

Dear Reader: A neuroma develops when a nerve is compressed, injured or pinched, causing swelling and pain. A neuroma in the area between the third and fourth toes, or between the second and third toes, is known as a Morton’s neuroma. (I’ve put an illustration of Morton’s neuroma on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Morton’s neuroma causes sharp, burning pain and numbness in the toes and foot. You may feel like you’ve stepped on a tiny hot coal and can’t get rid of it. At the same time, you’ll have the disconcerting experience of not being able to feel your toes. Sometimes the nerve tissue becomes so thickened you can feel or see a lump.

Women, particularly those who wear tight shoes, are at greatest risk for Morton’s neuroma. The best way to prevent the condition is to wear shoes with wide toe boxes. Tight, pointed shoes squeeze bones, ligaments, muscles and nerves. High heels may worsen the problem by shifting your weight forward. Over time, this combination can cause

Wearing shoes that provide enough room in the toe box is also the first step in treating Morton’s neuroma. For instant relief when pain flares up, try taking your shoes off and rubbing the area. The nerve can get trapped below the ligament, and rubbing can move it back to its natural position.

Your doctor or a foot-care specialist may recommend lower heels and metatarsal pads. These pads provide cushioning under your neuroma and better arch support to redistribute your weight. Custom shoe inserts will help correct structural problems and distribute the pressure more evenly.

If you’re in severe pain, your doctor may give you an injection of a local anesthetic combined with a corticosteroid to relieve the inflammation and pain. If you keep pressure off the toes and wear wide enough shoes, the problem may gradually disap-

pear.

For severe or persistent pain, you may need surgery to remove the neuroma. Once the nerve is gone, you permanently lose feeling in the affected area.

One alternative to surgery is to undergo neurolysis injections. These use chemical agents to block pain signals. Another alternative is to take a prescription pain reliever that alleviates nerve pain.

West leads high from his doubleton diamond. East takes three tricks in the suit, West discarding the heart two on the third. What should East do next?

In the bidding, North had an unenviable rebid. He did not want to bid one no-trump without a diamond stopper. He did not want to raise spades with a low tripleton. So he rebid two clubs, despite having only a five-card suit. South’s two-diamond cuebid was an artificial game-force.

When North indicated secondary spade support, South jumped to four spades.

West’s diamond-nine lead guaranteed that he had started with a singleton or a doubleton.

(As he had not supported the suit, with three low diamonds, he would have led his lowest.)

West’s heart pitch denied a high heart, and East could see that the club finesse was working if declarer needed it. So the defense had to collect a trump trick. With that in mind, East led another diamond, which promoted West’s spade jack as the fourth winner.

But the flip side of these floor plans is that in a small space, you’re often forced to cook, sleep, eat and relax in one room. That can be a blessing and a curse.

“When all of your spaces flow together, it can feel suffocating in a different way,” says Megan Blake, who runs an interior design firm in Alexandria, Virginia. “Sometimes, it’s nice to have a little visual separation.”

Folding screens can be difficult to keep in the center of a room because they aren’t always sturdy enough to stay in one place.

So, for design novices who are looking to split one room into two, the safest bet is a modular-style bookcase that looks like open square boxes stacked on top of one another.

Many retailers offer pieces this shape, but perhaps the most common is Ikea’s Kallax Shelving Unit ($139, www.ikea. com), which comes in white, black and birch finishes and has 16 cubes. Bush Furniture also produces a few 16-cube room dividers that are sold at retailers such as Staples and Wayfair.
