White Castle closes in Batavia

editorial@kcchronicle.com The Batavia White Castle closed sometime last week, City Administrator Bill McGrath said. The restaurant first opened at 76 S. Randall Road in 2001.

McGrath said he knew about the closing through a friend, then heard from police and others who verified the friend’s account of an empty White Castle building. As of Tuesday morning, he said the city has not had any contact from the privately-owned company about the Batavia location.

“We just haven’t heard anything from anybody,” McGrath said. “There’s not even a ‘For Sale’ sign out there.”

McGrath said any future developers likely would demolish the existing White Castle building because of its unique castle shape.

A call to the restaurant’s Batavia number rang repeatedly with no message. A phone message left for a White Castle spokeswoman was not immediately returned Tuesday.

St. Charles resident Margaret Kamen was surprised to find the Batavia location

closed Saturday. She has frequented the restaurant since 2004 when she moved to St. Charles.

Kamen said she does not understand why the store closed because it always seemed to be busy.

“Every time you went there, there were cars there,” she said. “It couldn’t have been for lack of business.”

White Castle’s sliders and cheese sticks, she is not willing to travel outside of the Tri-Cities for them. There are many other restaurants up and down Randall Road, she said.

White Castle joins the other recent Batavia restaurant closings of The Honey-Jam Cafe on Randall Road in October, and the Route 31 Burger King in July.

The annual event is set for May 24 and 25 in downtown St. Charles and features such mediums as clay and ceram-

About 110 artists participated in last year’s show, and the Downtown St. Charles Partnership is seeking similar numbers for this year’s event, said Scott Piner, the organization’s marketing and development manager.

Artists must submit four images of their work as well as one booth image.

Volunteers with the Fine Art Show Committee will review the submissions and make selections to ensure the show is balanced and of high quality, Piner said.

Deep freeze to end; 30s expected by weekend

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Ol’ Man Winter huffed and puffed and stunned the region with a frigid blast Monday and Tuesday, but above-normal temperatures are on the way.

“There will be no more arctic blasts anytime soon,” said Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Romeoville office. “We sort of drained it.

Things will climb back gradually here to normal. It will jump above normal by Friday with highs in the mid- to upper-30s across the west metro area. That will be 45 degrees warmer than Tuesday.”

The numbing chill that closed schools and libraries, canceled meetings and delayed garbage pickup was the coldest in 20 years, Friedlein said.

“It is normal to have cold air shots in the Midwest in wintertime,” Friedlein said.

“This one was particularly robust for a brief period. ... With the very cold air and wind, it dropped the temperatures to 40 and 50 degrees below zero.

That is the coldest temperatures seen in about 20 years.”

Schools will reopen today, but the two days they were closed because of the extreme cold means the last day of the school year will be extended out two days, officials said.

Batavia District 101 spokesman Tony Inglese said the school code requires the calendar to extend the days at the end of the year. Batavia’s last day will now be May 28, he said. In St. Charles School District 303, the last day will bump up to June 4, spokesman Jim Blaney said. June 2 would have been the last day for student attendance if no emergency days were used.

For Geneva School District 304, the last day of the school year now is June 3. Kaneland School District 302’s last school day will be May 30.

The extreme temperatures also caused garbage and recycling pickups to be delayed by one day, waste haulers said.

day and Saturday, with the normal Thursday through Friday pickup resuming next week. Christmas trees will be picked up the weeks of Jan. 13 and 20 on normal collection days.

agement’s website, pickups in some communities, such as North Aurora, also will be delayed by one day because of the cold.

Refuse and recycling are delayed one day in Sugar Grove as well.

ST. CHARLES CHARGED UP Green infrastructure popping up to support electric cars

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A new charging station in St. Charles is the city’s latest green initiative that officials hope will attract a growing pool of electric vehicle owners to the downtown area.

Electric vehicles appear to be gaining some traction in the Tri-Cities, with the installation of a new electric car charging station on the fourth floor of the parking garage on First and Illinois streets in St. Charles being the most recent piece of infrastructure to help meet a new demand.

Dennis Wilson, a salesperson at Nissan in St. Charles, said car shoppers are noticeably more interested in electric vehicles.

“We are selling a lot more this year than the previous year,” he said in mid-December while stopping by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for St. Charles’ new electric vehicle charger. “There’s a lot more interest in the vehicle.”

Wilson stopped by the ribbon-cutting with a 2013 Nissan Leaf – an electric car that, when fully charged, can travel 80 to 120 miles on a single charge. He said the vehicle entered the United States market in 2010, and about 12,000 to 14,000 Nissan Leaf vehicles are now on the road nationwide.

A fully equipped Leaf starts at $37,000, Wilson said, but state and federal incentives could trim up to $7,500 of the cost.

“A lot of our customers are installing charging stations in their home,” he said.

Tom Bruhl, electric services manager for St. Charles, said the ChargePoint-brand electric vehicle charger at the city’s parking garage has drawn six unique users since

going live in mid-December, including St. Charles resident Julia Davies’ vehicle, which was plugged in during a demonstration at the ribbon-cutting.

Davies said she and her husband, Gregg Yedwab, were looking to replace a 10-yearold car when they decided to purchase their Tesla Model S electric vehicle.

“We wanted something more green and earth-friendly,” Davies said.

Davies said she never worries about gassing up, or doing much of the maintenance gas-powered vehicles require.

Her car can travel up to 300 miles on a single charge, she said. She also noted that the car doesn’t require oil changes, and the car manufacturer can update the car’s software remotely whenever necessary.

Davies’ Tesla Model S starts at about $71,000, and up to $11,500 are offered in state and federal incentives, according to the Tesla Motors website.

“It’s almost like paying for your car’s entire lifetime of maintenance up front,” she said, noting that most of the time her vehicle is charged using a charging station she and her husband installed in their home.

She said it costs about $5 a year to charge the vehicle.

Bruhl said those vehicles have used about $1.60 worth of energy – about 20 kilowatt hours – since the charger went online. The charger is free for electric vehicle drivers because the city pays for the electricity.

The dual-charging unit cost the city about $13,000, but a Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant will help offset about

The city of St. Charles is responsible for any maintenance of the new ChargePoint station, but Bruhl said based on his research of other charging stations in the area, they need little upkeep. Also, it’s under warranty for the first year.

Electric vehicle owners with a ChargePoint card have access to a mobile application that tells them where the nearest charging station is and whether it’s occupied.

Bruhl said he hopes the area’s newest charging station draws drivers to downtown St. Charles, which in turn might boost some economic activity.

“In talking with electric vehicle owners, all used the ChargePoint system to figure out where the chargers [are] and those become destinations,” he said. “They say, hey, there’s a free charger in St. Charles or Geneva. Why don’t we go there?”

Bruhl said the Nissan dealer in St. Charles has four charging stations, and Kane County has one near the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva.

Cindy Galbreath, the village clerk, said Tuesday that the problem has not caused a service interruption, but that repairs would be needed. She said it would not affect the water supply, but “the street is all iced over.”

She said repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the week, but how soon that could be done will depend a lot on weather conditions.

Fireside Grille, at 49 Sugar Lane in Sugar Grove, is among the businesses affected. Virginia Yanke, an assistant manager there, said she had no problem getting into the business Tuesday.

CAMPTON HILLS – The Campton Hills Police Department charged two motorists with drunk driving during a special holiday enforcement period, Chief Dan Hoffman said Tuesday in a news release.

“We warned partygoers not to drink and drive, and we backed it up with aggressive enforcement,” Hoffman said.

32nd annual farm show set in DeKalb

That pairing is the topic of one of many sessions awaiting those who attend the 32nd annual Northern Illinois Farm Show, which will be today and Thursday at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

Although the basic format of the show is the same as past years, farm show director Amy LaTessa said there are a few differences.

“There are some new sessions, and the [start and end times] are different,” she said.

“Plus, we are extending the private pesticide testing for both days instead of just one, because it’s been so popular.”

Admission to the show, hosted by IDEAg Group LLC and local ag-related groups, is free, but parking is $5.

“January and February are really good for farm shows, because farmers can’t really do a lot in the fields,” IDEAg marketing director Samantha Kaplan said. “It’s a good time to look at new equipment and make plans.”

HorsePower Therapeutic Riding Inc. hopes to score another strike with a bowling fundraiser.

The Maple Park-based nonprofit organization – which offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons to children and adults with disabilities – is returning to the bowling alley Jan. 18 to raise money for its scholarship fund. Last year, Director Carrie Capes said, the sold-out event raised more than $11,000.

“We were very surprised,” she said.

This year, HorsePower is expanding the fundraiser to offer two bowling sessions: noon to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Charles Bowl, 2520 W. Main St., St. Charles. Doors open at 11 a.m., with bowling sign-in beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 10 and younger. Admission for nonbowlers is $15.

There is no cost for children younger than 3.

Be safe as polar vortex passes through Weather events sometimes are overhyped, but the extreme cold that has gripped our area has lived up to the billing.

Although the absolute worst of the weather emergency might have passed, it is not over. Today’s high temperature is expected to be in the teens, with wind chill values as low as minus 12.

The threats to safety for motorists and others will continue as well, with black ice, drifting snow and slick patches of packed snow making driving hazardous, including on interstates – especially those in rural areas.

Gov. Pat Quinn has issued a disaster declaration covering the entire state, and state transportation officials have advised avoiding nonessential travel in recent days.

People who must travel should let someone know where they’re going, the route they plan to take and their schedule for the day, so people know where they will be and can find them.

It’s also advisable to make sure your car has plenty of gas, leave dressed for the weather and that you have a good pair of boots either on your feet or in your car.

Extreme weather conditions of all kinds mean that we have to look after not only ourselves, but also our neighbors.

Check on people if you think they might be struggling, and help those you can safely help.

Animals are susceptible to the cold as well. Just because your dog or cat has a fur coat, doesn’t mean they won’t suffer. Please allow your pets indoors most of the day to prevent them from freezing.

As we emerge from the polar vortex and into more moderate temperatures in the days ahead, stay safe, look out for your pets and neighbors, and remember that it will be but a few short months before the spring.

How Reid may help GOP win back Senate

By MARC A. THIESSEN Special to The Washington Post Harry Reid’s decision to pull the trigger on the “nuclear option” in the fall may end up producing some unexpected fallout for Democrats next fall – the loss of their Senate majority.

Reid sowed the seeds of his own destruction by changing the calculus in the 2014 midterm elections.

Before Reid went nuclear, tea party challengers and their supporters (this columnist included) could correctly argue that winning the majority really did not matter. Since the GOP needed 60 votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster – something that was clearly out of reach – why not gamble and challenge the

establishment? The GOP had gone astray when it came to fiscal responsibility, and a Republican reformation was more important than a Republican restoration. To paraphrase former Sen. Jim DeMint, S.C., better to elect 30 true conservatives than compromise for a powerless moderate majority.

That rationale disappeared when Reid invoked the nuclear option. Now winning the majority really does matter.

While Reid’s nuclear strike was limited to executive-branch nominees and judges below the Supreme Court level, it set the precedent that the majority folks could change Senate rules when it suited them. If Republicans win control of the Senate this fall, there is

nothing to stop them from invoking Reid’s example. And if Republicans win the presidency in 2016, the nuclear option could have far-reaching consequences.

Take Obamacare. Does anyone think for a moment that a Republican Senate majority is going to let a handful of Senate Democrats stop them from repealing Obamacare in order to protect the institutional rights of the minority? Of course not. If Republicans take back the Senate and the White House, they can follow the Democrats’ lead, change the rules and repeal Obamacare with just 51 votes. And for conservatives upset over the Supreme Court’s Obamacare ruling, Reid’s action will make it easier for a Repub-

lican president and Senate majority to transform the high court. If Republicans are not allowed to filibuster lifetime appointments to circuit courts, why should they let Democrats filibuster lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court?

Ultimately, Reid’s action strengthens the hand of establishment Republicans facing conservative primary challengers – because the fate of Obamacare now hangs in the balance. The government shutdown proved that without control of the Senate, the GOP will never be able to repeal Obamacare. Tea party voters now have a tougher choice to make. Before the nuclear option, they could cast their ballots for the most conservative candidate, re-

gardless of electability. Now they need to ask themselves which is more important – ideological purity or winning the majority and repealing Obamacare?

The stakes are high because a GOP Senate majority is within reach. As the National Journal recently reported, “[T]he seven seats most likely to switch parties [in 2014] ... are only Democratic-held.

If Republicans flip six of the seven – without losing any of their own vulnerable seats – they would control the Senate in 2015.”

Autism is four to five times more common in boys than girls, with 1 out of approximately 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls diagnosed with autism in the U.S. The author, who lives in Glenview, said “Jackie’s Journal” was started when her son was 8. Jackie is between Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified and Asberger syndrome.

“This was a book that we wrote together as a way to talk about what autism was,” Christiansen said. “Things would happen. He missed social cues. He’d come home and say, ‘I want to die, everybody hates me.’ Through writing, we could discuss it and better understand somebody else.

... He’s got a really funny, sarcastic sense of humor. He wrote most of it and did the artwork.”

Mercer also has autism and attention deficit disorder.

They are featured in “Snub Club,” a children’s chapter book that presents autism so younger children can develop an understanding of other students in their classrooms.

“I just want people to understand, when they use the word ‘autism,’ that it has such a wide range,” she said. “It’s important to teach our kids at a very young age kind of what that means.”

Talking about the books is difficult for the boys, but Christiansen said it is an opportunity for them to stand up and say who they are.

thoughts on what causes it.

Christiansen said she always says it’s not her concern.

“It’s done,” she said. “I have to celebrate who my son is and celebrate a world that will meet him halfway. I get tired of trying to fit him in to what he’s ‘supposed’ to be.

This is too much of a battle.

I expect the world to understand and meet him halfway.”

Kimberly Luthin, a spokeswoman for Barnes and Noble, said the book chain also is hosting an educator forum on Common Core curriculum standards on what each district expects, how to prepare for it and how the bookstore can help.

Luthin said it was part of the bookstore’s Educator Appreciation Week, which kicks off Saturday and goes through Jan. 19.

GENEVA – With 1 in 88 to 1 in 55 children being diagnosed with autism, author and advocate Diane Mayer Christiansen said it is more important now than ever before to introduce the disorder publicly, to parents, teachers and other kids.

“A lot of parents just starting out do not get to see other parents and other kids,” Christiansen said. “It’s tough for them. A typical parent might look at that child and think, ‘He’s willfully misbehaving,’ and make judgments.

It’s kind of good for other parents to see their kid is just like my kid.”

Christiansen, 47, and her son, Jackie, 12, will do presentations and book signings of

“Jackie’s Journal” and “The Snub Club And The Case Of The Disappearing Donuts” on Saturday at Barnes and Noble, 102 Commons Drive, Geneva.

Christiansen will do a teacher-parent chat for adults at 1 p.m. and Jackie and his friend, Cameron Mercer, also 12, will do a children’s corner at 3 p.m.

“I will talk about my journey and things to do in the classroom and at home,” Christiansen said. “I will give a message of celebrating instead of looking at a negative, I will push the positive.”

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Annette Theobald said it has been a little more than 10 years since she and her husband, Dick, opened Paisano’s Pizza and Grill, a carryout and delivery place that has established itself in Elburn’s downtown area on Route 47.

The Theobalds opened the business after moving to Kaneville. She said they wanted to run a pizza place that was close, and “we just liked the small town, where everybody kind of knows everybody.” They liked the experience so much that they opened a sit-down restaurant, Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill, last year, across the street from the Paisano’s site.

Now, Annette Theobald is part of an organization tasked with helping promote existing businesses in the village and attracting newcomers. She is among the seven members on the Elburn Economic Development Commission.

“It’s like your business,” she said of the endeavor. “You want to keep your current customers happy, and you want to attract new business.”

The commission next meets at 9:15 a.m. Friday at Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

It was launched last year, meeting for the first time on Nov. 14. The goal is to work to retain current businesses and attract new businesses, which is similar to the goal of the Elburn Chamber of Commerce.

Elburn Village Administrator Erin Willrett said the commission allows members to promote their own businesses, as well as the village and the community as a whole.

She said commission members can walk around businesses with village officials.

Also, she said the commission can help potential business owners understand how to deal with zoning requirements and make it “a less intimidating process.”

As for improving existing businesses, Theobald said Eddie’s has benefited from a facade improvement grant from the village, which has led to increased visibility.

She said business owners can take advantage of such opportunities.

volved with the Elburn Lions Club and the Town and Country Public Library, and, of the village, he said, “I like to see the place succeed.”

He referenced a Michael J. Fox movie, “Doc Hollywood,” in which the title character caused damage in the small town of Grady, S.C., and was forced to do community service at a local hospital. Ultimately, he was won over by the town’s charm and was drawn to stay.

“There was a certain thing that drew him to that little town, and that’s the same thing I think Elburn can be,” Kryszak said, adding that festivals such as Elburn Days and the Christmas Stroll are “slices of Americana.”

Kryszak said he would like to see a destination restaurant in the village, and he said the village already has a big attraction – the Metra station.

He said because it’s the Metra stop nearest to Northern Illinois University, there are opportunities to take advantage of that.

“I talked to a civic official in a different area, and he said, ‘Joe, we would kill for a train station,’ ” he said. “We’ve got one in Elburn, and we’ve got to try to make better use of it.”

Ryan Easter, general manager of Bob Jass Chevrolet in Elburn, is another member of the commission. He praised the commission as providing “a very positive outlook” for Elburn’s future growth. He said Bob Jass already does what it can to promote fellow businesses, offering free shuttle rides to local restaurants for customers.

“We’re planting that seed,” Easter said, adding that he’s happy to share feedback received with other local businesses.

Former St. Charles North safety wins D-III title as college freshman

S

t. Charles North graduate Nick McCullough said he’s enjoyed returning to the area over holiday break to reconnect with family and friends, not to mention catch up on his sleep.

He hasn’t been able to show off his national championship ring just yet, but that day will come soon enough.

McCullough was a freshman safety on the Wisconsin-Whitewater football team that won the Division III national championship Dec. 20, trouncing Mount Union, 52-14.

McCullough’s contributions during the season predominantly came in practice for the Warhawks, as was the case for most of the program’s freshmen. Still, the championship year was a memorable way for McCullough to launch his college career.

“I enjoyed every bit of the season,” McCullough said.

“The guys on the team are just fantastic. You just have a ball practicing and stuff. You get down knowing you’re not going to play every down, but still you go out there and bust your butt and try to get the starters ready for the game.

Everyone knows their role.

All of us do it to the best of our ability because we know we’re all fighting for that main goal, which is the championship.”

The national title was the fourth in five seasons for the Warhawks, who finished the year with a 15-0 record.

The full team traveled to the national championship game in Salem, Va., but McCullough settled for monitoring most of the team’s road games from campus.

He dressed for home games, seeing minimal action.

“Definitely the mental part because you just have to make all the checks and stuff based on the formation,” McCullough said. “It’s overwhelming at first, but when you get the hang of it and get into the program, you start to understand it. Now it’s becoming second nature, I guess you could say.”

While Wisconsin-Whitewater plays at the D-III level, McCullough found out quickly that high-caliber players were all over the field.

“The competition is really tough,” McCullough said.

“Everyone’s got all-state, all-conference, all-area, all that stuff. We have a couple of Division I players who played a year or two at like Illinois, Illinois State, that transferred out because they didn’t like the program or whatever their reason was. So everyone is good.”

One of those transfers was South Elgin product Jake Kumerow, who piled up 1,331 receiving yards for the season after transferring from Illinois.

McCullough doesn’t yet have his hands on the Warhawks’ national championship gear – the shirts, hats and, eventually, the ring – but those goodies are coming.

McCullough, though, is more focused on finding his way onto the field in the coming years. He said a pair of safeties are graduating, but he expects competition for playing time to remain stiff.

There will also be the pressure of living up to the program’s lofty pedigree, but McCullough embraces those high expectations.

“I hold myself to a higher standard,” McCullough said.

“I always set high goals for myself to make sure I push myself higher to achieve those goals, and everyone pretty much on the team pushes themselves, wants to get better and push each other ... so we do achieve those goals.”

Frank said there is a common thread among the various teams he’s guided.

“All of my teams always have very good defenses,” said Frank, who is self-employed through his construction company. “Probably because that’s where my background comes from.

We may not be some of the fanciest teams. We’re not very flashy, so we do a lot of grinding out, creating plays, creating opportunities. But there’s always defense.

“A lot of times we end up frustrating teams into making mistakes and we take advantage, and that’s how we end up winning games.”

Several Rosary players were disappointed when Kane – who went 33-10-3 with a pair of regional championships during her two seasons as Rosary’s varsity coach – was not brought back.

“I don’t see a problem fitting in with the girls in any way, shape or form moving forward,” Frank said.

“Obviously Kristy will be missed, and I wish her the best of luck.”

Frank said his familiarity with Rosary’s roster should make for an easier Year 1 with the Royals than he’s encountered at other places.

He can take heart in the presence of a pair of the area’s top players returning – DePaul-bound goalkeeper Lauren Frasca and junior scoring dynamo Quincy Kellett.

Frank also is encouraged by the program’s offseason commitment. He said a large contingent of Rosary players are participating in an indoor league in Montgomery.

“It’s nice to see, actually staying involved and being active and hopefully staying somewhat in shape and getting ready for the season that’s going to start in, what, six weeks?” Frank said.

“Wow.” Time to gas up that car.

What really helped was kind of coming off those couple of losses I had earlier in the season.

It helped me have a more positive attitude toward the mental standpoint of wrestling. That helped at Dvorak and then now at Cheesehead.

What did you take away from the Cheeshead experience?

It was fun. We only brought eight guys because we had some injuries up there, but out of the eight, we had four in the finals. … Teamwise, there were some teams that didn’t go this year, but it hasn’t changed much. It’s always tough.

Brian Frank’s odometer says it all about his passion for coaching soccer.

During the boys high school season, Frank – who lives west of DeKalb and has a Rochelle mailing address – commutes all the way to Joliet West, where he is the varsity coach.

Daily treks like that will tear through a coaching stipend in short order.

Frank can lock in many more extended drives to his springtime itinerary after being named the new varsity girls coach at Rosary, where he previously served as assistant coach under Kristy Kane.

Longtime Rosary athletic director Mary Lou Kunold opted for continuity in the program after the popular Kane was let go as a teacher at Rosary and landed at the helm of rival Aurora Central Catholic.

“I just thought it would have been a better transition than to put it out there,” Kunold said. “He and Kristy worked well together, so no sense to go looking, really.”

Batavia coach Kevin Jensen and his staff planned to scout Tuesday’s St. Charles East at Streamwood game before hazardous wind chills closed schools and canceled practices and games.

Other than erasing the chance to see the Bulldogs’ next two Upstate Eight Conference River Division opponents, this week’s severe weather didn’t otherwise affect the Bulldogs much.

Their next game wasn’t until Saturday night against visiting Streamwood, anyway.

The cold, workout-less nights – the team practiced Monday and Tuesday morning – lent themselves to reflection about an encouraging run through holiday tournaments at Oswego and Montini. The Bulldogs were a combined 4-4 during the stretch.

“I would have liked to have won at least one more at Montini,” Jensen said, “but thought we played well every game and gave ourselves a chance to win every game.”

Batavia leads the conference race, and next week looms large in its bid to unseat defending champion Geneva and the rest of the pack. After visiting St. Charles East on Tuesday, the Bulldogs will play at Geneva on Jan. 17.

The Bulldogs won the teams’ first meeting, 59-51 – their first win in the series in nearly six seasons – but that was before Vikings freshman call-up Grace Loberg emerged as a dangerous scoring threat in the post.

Run, Rockets, run You can’t really call Burlington Central’s “22” conditioning drill a Catch-22, because there is a logical solution to escaping the situation.

Simply run from one end of the floor and back, down again and return to the freethrow line near the endline from where you started. If every Rocket does so before coach Mark Smith’s stopwatch reads 22 seconds, there is no gritty rinse and repeat.

“Definitely at the beginning of the season, 22s [are] a

very popular thing to do, but we stay conditioned throughout, which is good,” Central junior forward Alison Colby said.

BC closed a recent practice with a full scrimmage – a norm this time of year – but Smith elected to resuscitate the “22” challenge for the losing side as a sort of cherry on top.

No sweat for the Rockets, who have stressed defense and scoring in transition since last season’s run to the 3A Hoffman Estates Supersectional – its first season under Smith, a longtime high school, college and AAU coach in the region.

“He’s turned us against each other to make each other better, you know,” sophomore forward Sam Pryor said. “It’s a very competitive situation.”

And coach Tom Thibodeau, when asked if his opinion about the trade of forward Luol Deng was contrary to that of upper management, simply said: “We discussed it.

I’m going to leave it at that.”

It wasn’t an easy Tuesday morning for the Bulls in the wake of the trade late Monday that sent Deng to the Cleveland Cavaliers for center Andrew Bynum and three draft picks. By making the move, the Bulls essentially admitted what they were doing this season wasn’t working. Especially with star Derrick Rose lost for the season after having surgery on his right knee.

With general manager Gar Forman out scouting, vice president of basketball operations John Paxson had to answer the difficult questions.

And while his news conference lasted 35 minutes, in the end it was about financial flexibility moving forward.

The trade was made possible when Deng, who is eligible for free agency after this season, rejected the Bulls’ latest

offer on a contract extension last week.

“It was an offer that we felt was competitive and very reasonable in a lot of ways,” Paxson said. “[When the] offer we made was rejected – and I want to make Luol Deng this clear, too, which is absolutely Lu’s prerogative – when he didn’t take the deal and we realized how far apart we really are as far as coming to any type of agreement, we had to have some very difficult discussions.”

A source said the sides were still $4 million to $5 million a season apart.

That meant by acquiring Bynum for Deng and waiving Bynum, the Bulls could shed $20 million from their salary cap and avoid a luxury-tax hit. Plus, the three draft picks offer hope of some sort of return in the future.

And if the Bulls lose some games and slip into the draft lottery in a year being touted as having some franchise-changing players in it, so be it. Paxson just didn’t want to hear words such as “rebuilding” and “tanking” thrown around.

That’s because today is a mess.

The Bulls were headed for no-man’s land, good enough to sneak into the playoffs but bad enough to be ousted early and miss out on what could be a fruitful draft lottery in June. Deng had to go.

And, of course, there were immediate whispers that Rose wasn’t happy with the decision.

“Both [chairman] Jerry [Reinsdorf] and [general manager] Gar [Forman] spoke to Derrick,’’ Paxson said. “I’m never going to speak for Derrick. Derrick can speak for himself, and I’m sure that when he feels like it, he will. Our commu-

nication with Derrick has never led us to believe that [he’s unhappy].”

Rose shouldn’t be. If anything, he should be proactive.

He continued to insist last month that his only goal is to win a title. So he should start acting like a player who wants a ring.

Keep rehabbing, but get on the phone, reach out to possible free agents such as LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony or Chris Bosh and tell them that cap space is coming to the Bulls this summer.

More importantly, be the boss of the Rose franchise, and keep the worker bees in line.

Like Paxson said, Rose undoubtedly will address all of this soon.

It better be good.

Ten Blackhawks to play in Sochi Olympics

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@shawmedia.com Patrick Sharp insisted he was being honest when he said he wasn’t dwelling on his Olympic dreams, that he was serious when he said he wasn’t motivated by them.

But even Sharp had to admit the past few days, waiting for Team Canada to reveal its 25-man roster, were “pretty stressful.”

So for a few days, at least, Sharp was like millions of other hockey fans around the globe – scouring the Internet for predictions, for speculation, for any hint of who’d be in and who’d be out.

“Since the New Jersey game, really, it was kind of on my mind,” Sharp said. “The past couple of days, it’s been tough to go to sleep. You’re reading a lot of reports and trying to get as much information as you can.”

But when the call he’d been waiting for finally came – St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong telling him he’d made maybe the toughest team to make in hockey history – Sharp was in the shower.

“I had my phone with me

“I was surprised I didn’t have it in the shower with me.”

That’s what the Olympics mean to the 10 Blackhawks who were chosen by their countries to play in Russia next month. Sharp has won two Stanley Cups, and every other Hawk who was chosen has won at least one. Six of them have previously played in the Olympics. But the thought of putting on their country’s sweater still resonates.

“I’m excited, it’s obviously a huge honor,” said Duncan Keith, who was a lock for Canada. “That gets said a lot, but it really is. You look at all the people who play hockey in Canada, to represent the country is very special.”

Sharp, Keith and Jonathan Toews were chosen by Canada, which passed on

Brent Seabrook and Corey Crawford. All three Swedish Hawks – Niklas Hjalmarsson, Johnny Oduya and Marcus Kruger – were picked. Marian Hossa and Michal Handzus will play for Slovakia, and Patrick Kane (United States) and Michal Rozsival (Czech Republic) already had been chosen.

The Hawks, along with the Blues and Red Wings, led the NHL with 10 Olympians each. As the 10 lined up in the corner of the rink Tuesday to pose for a group photo as the morning practice wound down, Andrew Shaw – of course, it was Shaw – tried to sneak his way into the shot.

“He’s probably going to try to get in some hockey bag or something and try to get there,” Hjalmarsson joked.

Ten is plenty. In fact, it’s an awful lot. Fully half a gameday roster will be traveling to the other side of the world to play up to seven high-intensity games while the majority of the league gets nearly three weeks off to heal and rest for the seven-week sprint to the playoffs. It’s a lot of wear and tear, particularly for veterans such as Hossa

and Handzus.

“Those guys are pretty smart guys,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “They take care of themselves.”

Several players pointed out that, in 2010, the Hawks had six players go to Vancouver for the Olympics, still a fair amount, before they won the Stanley Cup. “It went pretty good that year,” said Hjalmarsson, who said he benefitted from the time off in 2010, but that the Olympians were sharper coming out of the break. “Hopefully, we could do something like that again.”

With the speculation and tension at last behind them, the Hawks can focus on the next five weeks of NHL play before turning their attention back to Russia.

Although there surely will be a little trash talk in the meantime.

“A little bit, little bit,” said Toews, a possible captain for Canada. “I think most of all it’s great to see how many world-class players we have in our room. ... To have 10 guys in our room is pretty special. It goes to show why we’re such a good team.”

Weather affecting travel plans for Huskies Northern Illinois athletics are not immune from the frigid temperatures and snowstorms that have hit the Midwest and caused travel delays over the past couple days.

The NIU men’s basketball team, which will play Buffalo at 6 p.m. tonight, was scheduled to fly to its away game, but had the flight canceled, according to a tweet from NIU coach Mark Montgomery.

Traveling by bus this morning Montgomery tweeted “Travel gets very difficult when your plane gets canceled and the highways are back up with traffic and bad road conditions.”

Montgomery later posted a picture of an accident involving an 18-wheeler on the highway, saying it was the “20th accident so far.”

The Huskies stopped in Cleveland to attend the Cavaliers game.

The Huskies are 6-6 and looking to move above .500 for the first time under Montgomery.

Derrick Rose might want to proceed with extreme caution.

The next thing he says should be thought out very well.

It’s time for the face of the Camp Rose franchise to gather the troops – brother/ manager Reggie included – and deliver a simple message: Everyone needs to shut their mouths.

Because fair or not, the Bulls’ mess is on Rose.

He’s earning $17.6 million this season and still is owed roughly $60 million for the next three seasons. He has earned the complete trust of a franchise still committed to building around him, despite two knee surgeries. And

he defiantly won’t involve himself in the recruiting game that goes on among the NBA’s elite.

So come the trade deadline Feb. 20, there shouldn’t be one whisper out of Rose’s camp that he’s somehow unhappy with the direction of the team. Not when his hands have been on the steering wheel the past four seasons.

The trade of Luol Deng late Monday was for financial flexibility, but it also came about because of Rose’s injury.

By ADAM L. JAHNS Chicago Sun-Times As this past season full of salary cap-crunching illustrated, every single dollar matters to Bears general manager Phil Emery and his staff in maintaining a roster.

In that regard, Emery promised last week that quarterback Jay Cutler’s seven-year deal – which includes $54 million guaranteed over the first three years and a yearly average of $18.1 million – would provide “tremendous value moving forward.”

“Obviously, it was a key deal in terms of how we manage our salary cap, not only this year but years forward,” Emery said. “That was very important.”

It’s all about managing the cap with several free agents to consider and other on-thefield issues to address.

Cutler’s contract is constructed in a way that his base salaries are his cap hits.

In the first three seasons of the deal, they are: $22.5 million in 2014, $15.5 million in 2015 and $16 million in 2016.

During the next four seasons, Cutler has base salaries of $12.5 million, $13.5 million, $17.5 million and $19.2 million with up to $2.5 million in roster bonuses to earn on a game-by-game basis in each of those years.

A signing bonus is not included, so Cutler’s deal is favorable when it comes to a renegotiation that could make it more cap-friendly. But the Bears can also release Cutler after 2016 without any salary-cap repercussions. It also includes an annual $500,000 de-escalator if he doesn’t meet offseason workout obligations.

“It’s fair for both sides,” Cutler said, “so hopefully we

can continue to get players that are going to help this organization win.”

The NFL’s salary cap for 2014 is projected to be more than $126 million. Based on those projections, that would have given the Bears approximately $45 million in cap space – the most in the NFC North, according to multiple analyses – when they went to work signing Cutler and others.

According to a source, the Bears are committing $33,827,500 in cap space for 2014 by locking in Cutler, cornerback Tim Jennings ($5.25 million cap hit), kicker Robbie Gould ($2.6 million), left guard Matt Slauson ($2,747,500) and fullback Tony Fiammetta ($730,000) in the past two weeks.

So what’s next?

With a defense to rebuild, the cap-crunching likely will continue. Emery said he’d like to retain center Roberto Garza and backup quarterback Josh McCown, while expressing serious interest in keeping defensive linemen Corey Wootton and Jeremiah Ratliff.

“We’ll have less space, [but] we’ll have enough space to be competitive and do the things that we need to do, attacking it when you take a look at the total context of how you attack building a team,” Emery said. “It’s not just the money that you have on cap for your phase. It is the draft, it is [unrestricted free agents], it is street free agents, it is the Arena League, it is Canadian football.

“We’re going to exhaust every source to put together the best group of players and the best team within the restrictions we have. But, to be simple, we’ve got less space, but we have enough space.”

‘Lone Survivor’: Communication breakdown

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post There’s a trend in movies this awards season, apart from the welcome abundance of awards-contenders with an African-American – or simply African – theme (“Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” “Fruitvale Station,” “12 Years a Slave,” “42” and “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”).

It first popped up this past fall, with back-to-back releases of the dramatic thrillers “Gravity” and “All Is Lost,” each of which centers on heroes – stranded, in one case, in space, and in the other in the middle of the ocean – who are visited by one increasingly grim disaster after another, until it seems that things can get no worse.

Add “Lone Survivor” to that list.

Based on the memoir of Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, who is played by producer Mark Wahlberg, the film tells the story of Operation Red Wings, a disastrous 2005 mission to kill a prominent Taliban fighter, Ahmad Shah (Yousuf Azami). As the title gives away, the fourman team of commandos, ambushed and stranded without communications on a remote mountain in Afghanistan, is slowly, agonizingly whittled away, one by one, until ... well, let’s leave some things to the imagination.

Luttrell’s comrades-in-arms are played by Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Taylor Kitsch, each of whom is barely recognizable behind the scruffy beards,

grime and blood that cover their faces.

Inexplicably, they wear no helmets.

Is it hard to watch? My gosh, yes, and not quite in the way that “Gravity” and “Lost” managed to make their parades of catastrophes simultaneously awful and compelling. Unlike those films, “Lone Survivor” is a loud and grinding affair, seemingly intent on wearing down its audience. At times, the violence is so unrelenting and fierce that it’s hard to believe that there’s anyone left alive, let alone with any bullets left to fire.

What’s missing here is something, or rather, someone, to care about. Written and directed by Peter Berg (“Battleship”), the film presumes our emotional investment in Luttrell and his fellow soldiers’ mission, simply by virtue of – well, it’s never quite clear what. The questions of who exactly Shah is, other than one of many murderous thugs, and why we should care so deeply about his fate, is never really explained in a way that grabs the imagination.

He’s no Osama bin Laden, in other words, and this is no “Zero Dark Thirty.”

Even worse, Berg gives us little reason to feel that we know the men who are hunting him, beyond a few lame lines of dialogue about someone’s upcoming wedding. They’re movie stars in camo, pretending to be massacred for the camera.

That anonymity worked in “Zero Dark Thirty.” There, it was about the mission’s high stakes, not the person-

alties of the SEALs who carried it out.

Here, we need something – compassion? Commiseration? Connection? – to leaven the monotony of the mayhem.

The fact that things start to go south after the team is discovered by a young Afghan goatherder, leading to an argument about whether to kill him, doesn’t do much to generate sympathy for these heroes. Even though the decision is ultimately made to let the kid go – a decision that Luttrell may have lived to regret – the fact that more than one of his pals seemed perfectly happy to shoot the child leaves a powerful, and lingeringly bad, aftertaste.

Of course, the film is supposed to be a tale of heroism. And in the end, it is.

Only the film’s real hero isn’t Luttrell, who survives unimaginable violence, including a gruesome leg injury that requires pushing a bone back into place. I can’t say more without spoiling things, but “Lone Survivor’s” most fascinating character doesn’t even appear until the film’s final minutes, and is dealt with mostly in a series of whatever-happened-to titles that run on screen just before the closing credits.

Now there’s a guy I would have gladly watched a whole movie about.

• “Lone Ranger” received one-and-ahalf stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains intense violence and obscenity. It runs 121 minutes.

Here they are: 1. Jealous: Excessively possessive; calls constantly or visits unexpectedly; prevents you from going to work because “you might meet someone;” checks the mileage on your car.

2. Controlling: If you are late, interrogates you intensively about

6. “Playful” use of force during sex: Enjoys throwing you down or holding you down against your will during sex; finds the idea of rape exciting.

7. Verbal abuse: Constantly criticizes or says blatantly cruel things; degrades, curses, calls you ugly names. This may also involve sleep deprivation, waking you with relentless verbal abuse.

8. Rigid gender roles: Expects you to serve, obey, remain at home.

9. Past battering: Admits to hitting a mate in the past, but says the person “made” him (or her) do it.

10. Threats of violence: Says things like, “I’ll break your neck” or ,“I’ll kill you,” and then dismisses them with, “Everybody talks that way.”

Safety of e-cigarettes has yet to be proved Dear Doctor K: After smoking for more than 15 years, I finally quit eight months ago. But I still miss my cigarettes. I recently heard about electronic cigarettes. Are they safe?

Dear Reader: I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, from my patients. Like you, my patients want to know if they’re a safe alternative to cigarettes.

The truth is that nobody knows whether e-cigarettes are safe.

That’s because e-cigarette makers have not submitted their products for FDA approval, which would require proof of safety and effectiveness. Ads claim e-cigarettes help people stop smoking, but I’m not aware of any evidence to back this up.

For readers who’ve never seen one, e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes or cigars. Others look more like pens. They all are built around a battery-operated heating element, a cartridge that contains nicotine and other chemicals, and an atomizer that converts the chemicals into an inhalable vapor.

E-cigarettes vaporize a solution of nicotine dissolved in water and propylene glycol. That’s a fluid that helps nicotine dissolve.

Why would anyone smoke an e-cigarette? Regular cigarettes contain nicotine – the substance

They also contain tars that can cause cancer. Proponents say that an e-cigarette gives a person the feeling of smoking without the risks.

E-cigarette smokers inhale nicotine, water and propylene glycol. The nicotine stems the craving that drives some ex-smokers back to regular cigarettes.

But e-cigarette smokers don’t inhale tar, carbon monoxide, or the thousands of other substances in tobacco smoke. So, while an e-cigarette smoker does remain with a nicotine addiction, he or she doesn’t have to worry about getting cancer.

Or so the proponents of e-cigarettes say.

But don’t be fooled. There are still many reasons to worry about e-cigarettes. First, the dose of nicotine delivered with each puff may vary substantially. Nicotine is a stimulant and very high levels can irritate heart rhythm.

Granted, there is no strong evidence that e-cigarettes can cause dangerous heart rhythms – but that is because there are no large,

high-quality studies of the safety of e-cigarettes.

Second, e-cigarettes still contain an array of chemicals. These include diethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance; formaldehyde, a powerful carcinogen; and at least four other chemicals suspected of being harmful to humans. There is no proof that e-cigarettes increase the risk of cancer the way real cigarettes surely do, but again, that’s because there are no good, long-term studies of safety.

Third, e-cigarettes are designed to simulate the smoking experience. By doing so, they might tempt ex-smokers into resuming the habit. They could also be a gateway into cigarette smoking for young people who are not yet hooked. Until we have scientific studies, it’s buyer beware.

If you’re an ex-smoker on the brink of relapse, consider the many well-studied, FDA-approved nicotine replacement products on the market. These include patches, gums and nasal sprays. They are vastly preferable to smoking, especially until we have more studies about electronic cigarettes.

Many of these same guys have big mouths and big egos and find it macho to kiss and tell. It’s obvious that Josh is one of these guys.

When teenage girls have premarital sex, they have little to gain and much more to lose

They could get a devastating sexually transmitted disease or wind up alone and pregnant. Both possibilities will leave scars that last a lifetime!

My mother is upset because this boy will not go to church with us. Because he won’t attend our church, she considers him to be a heathen and unfit to be dating her daughter. What Mom doesn’t know is that I’m not marrying this boy; I’m only going out with him. Also, I would not attend his religious services, but his parents are not upset because of this.

What can I do to get my mother to understand that this boy is good and decent with high moral values? I think she’d be happy if I went out with a guy from our church even if he was a jerk. Help!

It occurred during the Italian Club Championship in September 2012 (which was too late for the 2012 awards). Sitting West was Agustin Madala, one of the world’s most talented players, who was born in Argentina but represents Italy. It was originally reported by Ana Roth from Argentina.

In the auction, I am not sure about North’s double, which would usually be negative showing length in both minors.

Defending against four hearts, Madala led the spade jack, Rusinow, promising the queen.

South won with dummy’s ace and would have done best to start trumps, but he played a club to his ace.

West saw that if he were on lead, he would sacrifice a trick with whatever he led. So, he discarded a spade.

Declarer cashed his top heart.

West, still not wanting the lead, threw his king under the ace.

South now led a low heart.

West continued his brilliant work by playing low. East, Norberto Bocchi, won with his jack and shifted to the diamond queen.

Declarer could have escaped for down one by playing low on this trick and on East’s diamond-jack continuation. But in desperation, he covered the queen. West won with his ace, cashed the heart queen, and continued diamonds.

The defenders took two hearts and three diamonds for down two.

‘He’s going to be missed very much’ Former Lions Club president Henne remembered for years of service ELBURN – Jan Callaghan said she fondly remembers working – for years – at a hot dog stand at Elburn Days with her late husband, Bill, and their close friends, Ronald and Pat Henne.

Ronald Henne died Sunday at age 69, leaving a legacy from years spent helping out with the Elburn Lions Club. Callaghan said the Hennes were “both very good workers.”

“Ron spent a lot of times working at events down there,” she said. “He was just a bubbly guy. … He’s going to be missed very much.”

According to the obituary submitted by Conley Funeral Home, visitation

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla for Henne will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at 116 W. Pierce St. in Elburn. The visitation continues from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Blackberry Township Cemetery.

The obituary stated that Henne died after a brief battle with cancer.

He was president of the Elburn Lions Club from 1984 to 1985 and was a 1998 winner of the club’s Melvin Jones Award.

Elburn Village President Dave Anderson spoke highly of Henne. Anderson said both he and Henne were members of the Kaneland High School Class of 1962.

“He was one of those individuals who really and truly – and there are others – but he worked at building Lions Park into what it is today,” Anderson said. “He was an integral part of that.”

Anderson called him an “all-around good guy and a hard worker” and said Henne had “three great kids.”

According to the obituary, memorials in Henne’s name may be made to the Elburn Lions Club Helping Hands Fund, care of the Elburn

In Maple Park, the board meeting set for Tuesday will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 302 Willow St. in Maple Park.

Sports bar set to open in former Irish pub in Sugar Grove

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A new sports bar and restaurant, Roundup Sports Bar and Grill, is scheduled to open in March in the location of the now-closed Irish pub, Runway to Galway, at 1942 Route 30, Sugar Grove.

Jonathan Pantea said he co-owned another sports bar, Bottom’s Up in Naperville, until he was bought out.

He had been searching for a new place for the past year.

decided to open another place,” Pantea said. “I live in West Chicago. I looked in Geneva and St. Charles, and there’s places available there ... but there’s so many bars and restaurants on that strip, you really need to kill the competition.”

Sugar Grove seemed the perfect location because there is not a lot out there in the way of a sports bar, so his new place would meet a need.

Pantea said he was looking forward to an opening sometime between March 1 to March 15.

He also is looking to do some remodeling once the sale closes in the next couple of weeks.

“We’re going to extend and modify the bar. We’re going to add 15 televisions or so for sporting events,” Pantea said. “Maybe we’ll have some pay-per-view events, a football package. It will be a sports bar with a country flair to it.”

T h e r e s t a u r an t w o u l d have a full menu with a lot of bar type food such as burgers and wrapped sandwiches, he said.

“We are willing to do anything people like. We will feel out the crowd and change it up to suit everybody,” Pantea said. “If everything goes right, we are planning on building a gigantic outdoor patio that we can enclose in inclement weather and host a venue for live music for rock ‘n’ roll, country bands.”

Pantea also hopes to offer a Sunday brunch buffet during football season.

The students were serious about being generous with their creativity and sharing cheer with others outside our school walls because earlier that day, they had attended a production of “A Christmas Carol” at the Paramount Theater.

The play, “A Christmas Carol,” helped students reflect on the theme of generosity and turned their thoughts to helping others. The students decorated 250 grocery bags, donated by Woodmans, that will be used to distribute food at the Between Friends Food Pantry in Sugar Grove.

They also created more than 125 beautiful greeting cards to be used by clients at the food pantry or guests at Hesed House who want to send a card to a friend or family member. In addition, they wove 263 rainbow bracelets to be shared with children who will visit the food pantry and Hesed House during this holiday season.
