Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Village officials on Monday night explored several options for replacing a records specialist in the police department, and they ultimately pushed the decision to a future meeting.

They did move forward on another issue – the buying of a new truck for the public works department – after some debate over whether to buy one with a gas engine or a diesel engine.

Despite the objection of board member Dave Gualdoni, the board, by a vote of 4-1, OK’d the decision to buy a truck with a diesel engine – a 2015 Ford F-450 chassis truck from Brad Manning Ford in DeKalb for $39,115. It also approved buying a plow, dump bed, hydraulics and light package from Bonnell for $34,767. The truck will be

used to spread salt during the winter, and it will operate as a dump truck for the rest of the year.

There was much more discussion about the police department issue. A longtime records specialist will be leaving by March 1. Police Chief Steve Smith said he would like to hire a full-time employee, and then – on next year’s budget – add a parttime employee who would work less than 19 hours a week. He said it would be valuable to have a second employee to do the work because it is a specialized position and cannot be done easily when the full-time employee is not available.

Village President Dave Anderson agreed adding an employee makes sense, but he instead pushed for adding three part-time employees instead of a full-time employee and a part-timer. Anderson said with three part-time employees, the village could save a significant amount of money by not having to pay

benefits.

Smith said having a fulltime employee “lends consistency and accountability to that position.”

Some trustees, however, said they didn’t understand why the request even was on a Village Board agenda.

Gualdoni and Jeff Walter said board members couldn’t make a decision because they needed to see how much each scenario would cost.

Walter said it belonged on a committee of the whole agenda.

“That’s a COW issue and not a board decision,” Walter said. “What’s it cost? I’d like to see those numbers.”

Gualdoni said since part of the request depended on the budget process for next year, officials should “talk about it during budget time.

This is a moot point.”

Erin Willrett, the village administrator, said there was urgency to fill the position because “we have a resignation, and we are up against a time frame.”

Anderson said it is an opportunity to consider making a long-term change, rather than just approving a fulltime person for now.

“Why not look at the whole picture?” Anderson asked. “It’s not a moot point. … If we have a resignation, and we have an opportunity to do something about it from a fiscal standpoint, why not do it now?”

Walter said more discussion was needed because, “we have Steve’s suggestion … but we don’t have any dollars and cents.”

Willrett said it should be part of the next Village Board meeting, which is set for Jan. 20, a Tuesday, because there is no meeting on Jan. 19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There could be more discussion, but she said there also is urgency to fill the position.

Dull will be in charge of

She also will market destinations in Greater St. Charles to group businesses and leisure travelers.

Dull is a 2012 DePauw University graduate whose marketing experience includes

Elburn manufacturer had role in Maggie Daley Park project

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Some machines from an Elburn-based manufacturer had a hand in the construction of the forthcoming Maggie Daley Park in Chicago.

Two Terramac RT9 crawler carriers from Terramac LLC, 724 Hicks Drive, Elburn, were used at the park site to move soil and stone above the thousands of yards of geofoam that forms the park’s landscape base, according to a news release.

An ice skating ribbon opened in December at the park, at the northeast corner of Grant Park in Chicago, the release states.

“As a company based in the greater Chicago area, our team at Terramac is honored to have been involved in such an important project for the Chicago Park District and the city of Chicago,” wrote Terramac CEO Mike Crimaldi in the release.

This Terramac RT9 crawler carrier at the Maggie Daley Park construction site in Chicago was rented from Elburn-based Terramac LLC. were used on the project from March through October 2014, Crimaldi wrote in a separate email Tuesday. Chicago-based Walsh Construction Company II LLC, which was hired to manage the park project’s second phase, rented the crawler

carriers from Terramac.

Walsh Construction was in search of equipment that could be used on top of the park’s lightweight geofoam.

When fully loaded, the ground pressure on the crawler carrier is only 5.1 pounds a square

inch, the release states.

Once Walsh Construction

officials inquired about the crawler carriers, they were invited to Elburn to view them in person and try them out, Crimaldi wrote in the email.

“Once they got into the machine, drove it around and saw what it can do, they were sold,” wrote Matt Slater, director of sales at Terramac, in the news release.

Walsh construction crews on average moved 500 yards of dirt and as many as eight loads of stone each work day, wrote Robert Bolt, Walsh Construction senior project superintendent, in the release.

“These machines allowed my crews to go in new directions and create whole new tracks across the job site, even the day after [rainfall],” Bolt wrote in the release.

The rest of Maggie Daley Park is scheduled to open sometime this spring.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com After a mild December that saw only a trace of snow, Kane County is getting blasted with a combination of snow, ice and extreme cold during the first week of the new year.

Dangerous wind chills are predicted for today. According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature on Wednesday will be 7 degrees below zero, with wind chills expected to be between 25 and 35 below zero.

Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Kaneland and West Aurora school districts announced Tuesday evening that classes were canceled Wednesday.

“We are recommending that people limit their exposure outdoors,” said Don Bryant, director of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management. “In that type of weather, you can experience frostbite in 15 minutes. Any more than that, you run the risk of hypothermia.”

Wind chills are expected to be between 20 and 30 degrees below zero again on Thursday. Temperatures eventually will rise to between 12 to 17 degrees above zero on Saturday.

Kane County’s website, www.countyofkane.org, has published a list of warming shelters in the area under the heading emergency alerts.

City halls in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles are among those warming centers listed, as well as the North Aurora Police Department and the Elburn and Sugar Grove fire departments. Because of the dangerously low temperatures, all Kane County forest preserves will be closed to the public today. District admin-

istrative headquarters will remain open regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Bryant warned that people need to dress for the low temperatures, even if they are just commuting in their car to and from work.

“You want to make sure you are dressed appropriately,” he said. “Pack an emergency kit in your car, including a blanket or two and extra clothing, and make sure your cellphone is fully charged.”

Public works departments were busy Monday night into early Tuesday, clearing streets after a second snowstorm this year. According to the National Weather Service, most municipalities in Kane County received between 2 and 3 inches of snow.

Compared to the 2013-14 winter season, this winter season has been mild so far, in terms of snowfall and temperature. Last year, the Chicago area received 82 inches of snow, making it the third-snowiest season on

record, according to National Weather Service records. It also was the third-coldest.

“By this time last year, we had used 1,600 tons of salt,” said Kevin Stahr, communications coordinator for the city of Geneva. “This season, we have used 700 tons of salt so far. Last year was certainly an abnormal winter, given the frequency and severity of the storms that hit our region.”

So far this season, Geneva public works crews have had to plow five times – three times in November and two in January. By this time last season, crews had responded to 18 snow and ice events, Stahr said.

Geneva has 2,500 tons of salt on hand for the rest of the season, he said.

“We should have enough if we have an average winter,” Stahr said. “We could always place an additional order if we need to.”

Since they didn’t have to plow in December, Geneva public works crews spent the

time catching up on parkway tree trimming and tree removal, Stahr said.

North Aurora public works crews spent the mild December cutting trees, doing storm sewer work and catching up on other things, North Aurora Public Works Superintendent Mike Glock said.

As a result of the mild winter, Glock said his department has plenty of salt left for the rest of the season.

“We’ve got a lot of salt on hand,” Glock said. “Last year at this time, we were starting to get to a critical point.”

With the latest storms, St. Charles public works crews have responded to seven snow events this winter season. At this time last year, they had responded to 16 events.

“Right now, we’ve got 6,500 tons of salt on hand,” said Chris Adesso, assistant director of public works-operations for the city of St. Charles. “I’m really happy where we are at in terms of our salt supply. I think we’ll be just fine.”

Batavia discusses Moody’s rating review of electric bonds BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting discussed the latest rating review by Moody’s of the city’s 2006 electric revenue bond issue.

Moody’s has reaffirmed the city’s rating of A1, but has changed the city’s outlook to negative from stable. Moody’s Corporation is the parent company of Moody’s Investors Service, which provides credit ratings, among other things.

“This is not a rating change – we still have the same bond rating – but it means that it may downgrade us at a future review,” Batavia Finance Director Peggy Colby said in a memo to city officials.

On Moody’s rating scale, obligations rated A are judged to be upper-medium grade and are subject to low credit risk.

Colby told aldermen what

the impact would be on the city’s electric utility if Moody downgraded its rating.

“It essentially means that if the utility were to go out and issue new debt – which there are no current plans to do so – the utility would play a higher interest rate on the debt,” Colby said.

ELBURN – Meagan Seals has survived severe birth defects, defying the odds to make it to her fifth birthday in November.

Her Elburn family incurred $40,000 in medical bills getting emergency surgeries in the summer of 2014 for Meagan to remove a mass in her brain. And when an online funding page was not doing well, community members decided to work on a major fundraiser that will be next month.

“It’s amazing,” said Luellen Seals, Meagan’s mother.

“They called me and said they wanted to do this for us – out of the blue. I feel very blessed that there are people willing to go out of their way out there.”

The Megan Seals Benefit is set for 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at the American Legion, 112 N. Main St., Elburn.

Tickets to the event are $25, which includes a meal, a drink and entry in a raffle, from which 20 winners will be chosen for a total cash payout of $2,500. Only 400 tickets

Police say man accused of speeding, driving drunk Friday in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police arrested a man accused of driving drunk early Friday after being alerted that Wayne police spotted a motorist traveling south on Route 25 in excess of 80 mph, according to a St. Charles police report.

W h e n TriCom Dispatch issued the alert a b o u t 1 2 : 4 6 Florencio a.m., one St. Caballero-Santi Charles officer went to the Main Street bridge to be on the lookout, but it was another officer who saw the fast-moving vehicle turn from Route 25 onto westbound East Main Street, po-

lice reported.

The vehicle reportedly swerved toward the curb in the 300 block of West Main Street and was stopped in the 700 block of West Main Street after it was seen speeding and swerving in its lane.

The driver, Florencio Caballero-Santi, was taken into custody after a field sobriety test, police reported.

Wayne police then arrived and detailed Caballero-Santi’s offenses in Wayne: traveling 62 mph in a 25 zone and running a red light at Army Trail and Dunham roads, according to the report.

The Wayne officer couldn’t catch up to the vehicle because it was going more than 80 mph, police reported.

Caballero-Santi, 28, of the 200 block of Court of Shorewood, Vernon Hills, was

charged with two felony charges of aggravated driving under the influence while license revoked for a previous DUI; two felony charges of aggravated DUI for driving without insurance; and felony possession of a fraudulent ID card.

Police reported he had a fake permanent resident card and a fake Social Security card.

He also was charged with DUI, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent, driving without insurance, obstructing identification, driving with a revoked license and speeding.

Records on Tuesday morning indicated Caballero-Santi was being held at the Kane County Jail on $75,000 bond.

He is expected in court Jan. 15.

Russell McClure Reid, 69, of Batavia, IL, formerly of Oklahoma passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Maywood, IL. Russell was born in Chicago on June 24, 1945, to Elizabeth and Archie Reid.

He graduated from Wheaton High School in 1963, served in the Marines during the Vietnam War, and later graduated from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma.

Prior to moving to Oklahoma, Russell worked as an Illinois State Trooper. While in Oklahoma, he worked as a sales representative for Pitney Bowes and Country Companies and was a volunteer for the Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity.

In 2009 he began serving as a board member and was twice elected president of Habitat in 2010 and 2011.

He was very involved in the building of homes for Habitat clients and was instrumental in establishing the first permanent office space for the Tahle-

Bob and Sue married on July 19, 1975, and made moves throughout the country during Bob’s successful 38 year career with DuPont to areas such as St. Louis, Missouri, and Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, before settling back in the Chicago area for the past 24 years.

Bob loved spending time with family and friends, relaxing in retirement in Fort Myers, Florida, attending local sporting events, and donating time and money to the local food bank. He was a smart, energetic leader and problem solver that helped many people on a personal, professional, and charitable level. His faith and determination carried him through a fight with cancer over many years. He will be remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was loved and

Farmers, agribusinesses to connect 33rd annual Northern Illinois Farm Show starts today in DeKalb

kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Brett Stoxen spends more time tightening bolts and polishing equipment in the days leading up to the Northern Illinois Farm Show than he normally does.

Although it requires extra work, Stoxen, an electrician with A&P Grain Systems of Maple Park, enjoys the annual event, which brings together a handful of presenters, hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors to learn about what’s next for agriculture.

“We kind of look forward to it,” Stoxen said. “We get to walk around and see what else is out there.”

Stoxen said A&P Grain has sent representatives to the show for the past 19 years. Stoxen and three of his coworkers prepared the various machines they assembled specifically for the show Tuesday. Service mechanic Adam Schumacher tightened clamps on a grain blower while Stoxen set up displays with information about the company’s products.

The Convocation Center was a flurry of similar preparations Tuesday as vendors readied for the 33rd annual Northern Illinois Farm Show, which is open today and Thursday.

Parking is $5, but otherwise the event is free. Events today will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

The show will feature 200 exhibitors and draw close to 5,000 visitors, said Samantha Castro, the marketing manager for IDEAg, which presents the show annually. Visitors come from Illinois, southern Wisconsin, southern Minnesota and Iowa.

“The draw is bringing the local and leading agribusiness together,” Castro said. “Anything they need for next season, they will find here.”

Fox and MSNBC really do reinforce partisan instincts

By CASS R. SUNSTEIN Bloomberg News Does your vote depend on which news channel you watch? If you are a regular viewer of Fox News, will you become more likely to vote Republican?

Until recently, it has been impossible to answer that question empirically. Sure, Republicans tend to favor Fox News, and Democrats tend to prefer MSNBC. But if Fox viewers are more likely to vote Republican, it might well be because of the conservative views that led them to Fox in the first place.

An ingenious new study, by Gregory J. Martin and Ali Yurukoglu of Stanford University, explores whether people’s voting behavior really is influenced by what they see on cable news. Their research starts with the fact that, in different parts of the U.S., the stations found on specific channels vary.

It turns out that, when it comes to the total number of viewers, channel location matters a lot. People are more likely to watch stations in the lower positions. For historical reasons, Fox News and MSNBC have sometimes received advantageous channel positions – but sometimes have not.

So, Martin and Yurukoglu explored, across recent time periods and in various parts of the country, the relationships among channel positions, people’s intended votes, county-level presidential vote shares and individual viewership.

One of their preliminary findings is that Fox and MSNBC have both grown more ideologically defined, and Republicans and Democrats alike are aware of that. In 2000 and 2004, a typical Democrat was no more likely than a typical Republican to watch MSNBC. By 2008, a typical Democrat was 20 percentage points more likely to watch MSNBC. In 2004, a Republican was only 11 points more likely than a Democrat to watch Fox. By 2008, the gap widened to more than 30 points.

The authors also found both Fox and MSNBC have real effects on people’s likely votes.

At the level of individual voters, that may not be such a huge deal. But considered across the United States, the effects are large.

To be sure, Martin and Yurukoglu’s analysis has many moving parts, and the researchers draw some of their key findings from surveys of voting intentions, rather than actual votes. So their particular calculations should be treated as provisional rather than definitive.

Nonetheless, their evidence is the most compelling to date that cable news has a major influence on viewers. Fox News and MSNBC do not merely attract like-minded people.

They also heighten divisions among voters, contributing to political polarization – and they have an impact on people’s ultimate votes.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR MALE BLACK LIVES MATTER To the Editor: I am writing to you in the hope that you have more resources to help me understand what has gone wrong in America.

The protest marches against the police departments in different areas of the country because of the tragic shooting deaths of two men, New York and Ferguson, Missouri – I have listened/read the angry comments of the protesters. But, as of yet, none, on either side, has explained when it has become an acceptable practice in this country to resist arrest after allegedly breaking the law.

We as a society have authorized men and women of all races and nationalities to enforce those laws. We have given them the right to use whatever force is necessary to apprehend law-breakers and protect all law-abiding people, young and old alike. I haven’t heard

one acceptable way from any protester how a policeman should apprehend a suspect without some kind of physical intervention.

Maybe by Taser, but people don’t seem to like that very much because it has caused cardiac issues.

Pepper spray seems like another choice, but you can’t do that to asthmatics; that could trigger a response to breathing issues.

The only other choice, from a laymen’s perspective, is to not arrest anyone who resists after they break the law, or train officers to not only uphold the law but get a background in para-medicine. The drawback to that choice, however, would be that the perpetrator may have broken other law’s the patrol person may not know of. (I don’t know what municipalities could afford para-medicine training for their officers, anyway.)

I don’t believe that would be easy

to explain to a person the crime had been committed against.

Since the beginning of this whole nightmarish issue, the media has left this part of the equation out of stories. Please correct me if I am wrong, bottom line, would these men still be alive today if they had not resisted arrest?

In the video of Eric Garner’s arrest, it seems he knew exactly why he was being arrested and just didn’t like what it meant. He decided he was not going to stop what the state of New York called illegal activity.

Anytime I have been pulled over by law enforcement, I have not tried to outrun them or resist their efforts to enforce whatever law infraction I may have caused.

So, please, can you help with this perplexing issue?

Cast of many powers host Knights

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – A frigid forecast bought the Kaneland girls basketball team a reprieve from practice today.

Under normal circumstances, the Knights would like to think Tuesday’s 62-37 nonconference romp against Rosary truly earned the break.

With today’s classes canceled because of glacial weather, Kaneland will get to enjoy this one for a little while longer before the team prepares for Friday’s visit to Aurora Christian.

“I feel like we’re playing really well,” Knights junior center Bailey Crimmins said. “We’re always practicing really hard and hustling in practice, and I think we’re just going to continue to move forward from here.”

Kaneland (9-3) opened and closed the first half on separate runs, prompting frequent exclamations of “NICE PASS!” and other complementary phrases from coach Ernie Colombe.

Many of those plays ended with the 6-foot-3 Crimmins converting easy points down low.

“We knew that they didn’t have anyone to really match up with me inside, so that was kind of the game plan,” Crimmins said. “Passing in the post, working it inside out and playing good defense.”

In between, as the Knights searched for consistency, Colombe occasionally resorted to such words as “BOARD IT!” and “TWO HANDS!” At times, the Royals (4-10) asserted themselves as rebounders, especially on the offensive glass.

During one sequence, Megan Conlin snagged two of four straight offensive rebounds, her most impressive feat until the last half-second of the second quarter, when she sneaked behind the Knights for a field goal off an inbounds play just before the halftime buzzer.

Kaneland led at halftime, 33-17, then, a result made possible by two recent revelations.

Crimmins, an all-tournament selection during the team’s holiday trip to Ottawa, scored eight of the Knights’ first 11 points to propel a fast start.

Meanwhile, freshman reserve guard Jenni Weber enjoyed spot-on success from distance, drilling 3-of-4 3-pointers as part of a 12-point first half.

Crimmins and Weber both finished with 15 points, while junior guard Camri Conley (10) also scored in double figures.

After a handful of recent illnesses and other commitments, the Knights played with a full roster for the first time this season.

With the proposal nixed, area teams will continue facing substantial scheduling obstacles in the aftermath of defections of conference-mates.

The Upstate Eight Conference – which includes Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North – will feature uneven divisions beginning next year with the departures of Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley, while the Northern Illinois Big 12 – home to Kaneland – has been reduced to five teams a division, meaning each side of the conference plays only four conference games in addition to two NI Big 12 crossovers and three nonconference games.

Kaneland athletic director Peter Goff cited the school’s difficulty lining up suitable nonconference games as a

leading factor in his support for the proposal. Carrick, meanwhile, told Shaw Media on Tuesday he was not “overly surprised” the proposal failed.

He said he might work toward hatching a revised alternative to the status quo in the future.

“I was disappointed but not surprised,” Carrick said. “To have 25 percent vote for you and to have 50 percent vote against the proposal is one thing, but the more disappointing thing is that 25 percent didn’t vote at all. We still think we have the basis for a good idea but the timing isn’t the best right now.”

For St. Charles East – the only Tri-Cities school currently in the state’s largest playoff class, 8A – being split off from St. Charles North, Geneva and Batavia was a main concern expressed by athletic director Mike Sommerfeld.

Considering the varying agendas distinct to each school, it’s little surprise finding common ground on a drastic reform proved an uphill battle.

GLEN ELLYN – The St. Charles East boys basketball team wasn’t its vintage self Tuesday, and that applied to senior point guard Cole Gentry, too.

Yet with the game in the balance in the final minute, Gentry found ways to help East extend its winning streak to 11 games in a 61-58 victory at Glenbard West.

Gentry, who uncharacteristically struggled with turnovers and missed free throws, put his team ahead for good with a drive into the teeth of Glenbard West’s defense for a basket-and-foul with 51 seconds to play. Gentry missed the free throw but the Saints nudged ahead, 57-56.

Then, a Gentry steal led to a fast break resulting in Jake Asquini’s put-back basket for a 59-56 Saints advantage with 35 seconds to play.

“That’s usually what big players do,” East coach Pat Woods said of Gentry’s late uprising.

“I’m glad he was able to, and I’m glad we were able to come out of here with a win on the road after a 10-day layoff, and I’m positive it’ll serve as a wakeup call to all of us that you’ve got to bring your best every night or just like

everyone says, anyone can win at any time.”

The Saints (13-1) breezed through the Chuck Dayton Tournament in DeKalb, winning four games by an average margin of 31 points. But the Hilltoppers (67) required the Saints to uncork big plays facing adversity in the fourth quarter, and East came up with many, including a gritty offensive rebound by Mick Vyzral that yielded two free throws to tie the game at 54 with 1:58 left.

“He’s been our leading rebounder all year,” Woods said.

“He’s incredibly smart and he does a great job positioning.

He’ll get the guy in the right spot and he knows how to tip it to himself. I see it all the time in practice, so he’s very good at doing that, and obviously it was a great rebound that we needed, so I was very happy with that.”

Vyzral’s perimeter shooting touch – the 6-foot-5 forward hit three more 3-pointers Tuesday – can overshadow his typically solid work on the glass.

“We want to have a rebounding, defensive mindset because rebounding, that’s going to get us championships,” Vyzral said.

Tri-Cities football matchups are safe for the time being but what to do about the headaches of conference-hopping remains a mystery.

The likelihood that not all Tri-Cities football teams would meet in a given season was among the reasons an IHSA bylaw amendment proposal to drastically restructure football scheduling was met with a lukewarm reception locally.

The IHSA announced Tuesday the proposal was voted down, 395-212, during statewide voting last month, preserving the traditional conference structure for football.

The proposal, originating from Sycamore athletic director Chauncey Carrick, who sought to put football scheduling in the hands of the IHSA, which would sort schools by enrollment and geography into groupings of seven, eight or nine schools, with the top four teams in each region qualifying for the playoffs.

The plan sought to smooth the turbulence created by conference movement, which has hit the Chicago area especially hard in recent years. Much of the movement is driven by schools looking for conference fits where they can be more competitive in football, so cen-

NOTEWORTHY Galbato soaring for Aurora Christian Wilkie said she is questionable for the Aurora Christian girls basketball coach Burney Wilkie remains gaga over junior center Gabby Galbato.

After coaching the Geneva Middle School North product for the past two seasons at the lower levels, Wilkie keeps beaming about Galbato’s progression as they both enjoy their first varsity seasons.

“She’s more active than she’s ever been,” Wilkie said. “She is really working hard to get the ball.”

Recalling a mid-December home win against Indian Creek, Wilkie added that “there was a stretch in the third quarter where it just seemed like they could do nothing to stop her. She’s just playing unbelievably well.”

The run continued during the Eagles’ recent trip to the Dixon tournament, which ended with a fourth-place finish. Galbato led Aurora Christian with 22 points in a quarterfinal victory against LaSalle-Peru, and scored 12 points in a narrow semifinal loss to Sterling before leaving late in the game with a knee injury.

Diagnosed with a deep bone bruise, Galbato was cleared to play last week.

They play great defense. And we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket.”

“We’re in a little bit of a slump right now,” Drumtra said. “Hopefully, we can get it

going again when we get back to school.”

Old ’Dogs, new tricks Junior forward Hannah Frazier’s team-leading averages of 23 points and 10.33 rebounds a game easily hand her the title of the most improved among Batavia’s three returning starters.

Still, Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen is adamant about the importance the other members of that group – Bethany Orman and Shea Bayram – have had as Batavia tries to break away from the .500 mark down the stretch.

“Bethany has moved up in a way,” Jensen said, “because she’s had to be the point guard, guard people’s point guards – all kinds of things like that that she might not have had to do last year – and be a physical and an emotional leader for us.

That’s been a big deal for us.

“Shea, as well. I don’t care if she has points, rebounds, whatever it is. We’re just a different team when she’s playing.

I don’t know what it is other than that.

She’s glue for us. She holds us together.”

Gentry considered the rocky game a constructive night for the Saints, who came in flying high.

“It was definitely something where we needed to battle through adversity,” Gentry said. “It’s good for us at this point in the season. But a lot of it was our start. We had a really poor start. … It’s a good teaching point for our team because we know we can play with anybody, but we’ve also got to know if we don’t play well, anybody can play with us.”

After the recent Pontiac Holiday Tournament, St. Charles North boys basketball coach Tom Poulin said senior guard Jake Ludwig “has shown he can hold his own against some of the best in the state.”

Ludwig’s spirited stretch also earned him a nod as the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week. Catching up with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley, Ludwig addressed the team’s tournament run and more. Here’s an edited transcript:

WEST CHICAGO – Watching his St. Charles East boys bowling team maintain its torrid, season-opening pace is one thing for Saints coach Steve Dessauer.

ADVICE Woman’s illicit affair seems to upset only her sister Dear Abby: My sister has been seeing a married man for two years. He has told her the only reason he is staying in this loveless marriage is for his daughter (standard lie of a cheating husband).

Because her nudity makes you uncomfortable, the most tactful way to approach this would be for Brent to explain to his mother that you were not raised this way, and that you both would appreciate it if she’d wear a robe when you’re around. It’s worth a try.

Place limits on new teen drivers so they remain safe Dear Doctor K: My son is going to get his driver’s license in a few months. How can I help him get ready for this new responsibility?

Dear Reader: Taking the test to get my first driver’s license was one of the most emotionally charged moments of my teenage years. Being able to drive oneself around is an important step toward independence. Boy, did I want that independence.

I aced the written test of driving rules. But there also was the test of my driving skill. More on that later.

When your kids get their driver’s licenses, it’s liberating for all of you: You no longer have to drive them everywhere, and they no longer have to depend on you for rides. But it also means more worries for you. Motor-vehicle accidents are the No. 1 cause of death for adolescents.

Here are some steps you can take to help your son drive safely: • Don’t rely solely on driver’s education programs. These courses can be helpful, but you are still your child’s key role model. Make sure your son always sees you wearing your seat belt, driving within the speed limit, driving defensively and taking responsi-

• Limit night driving. Driving at night is more difficult, especially for less-experienced drivers. In addition, it is at night that kids are more likely to be driving with more passengers, more distractions and a greater likelihood of alcohol use.

Passengers, especially other teens, are a major risk factor for accidents involving teen drivers.

They cause distractions that new drivers cannot handle well.

• Practice driving with your son. Help him learn to handle difficult situations like night driving and heavy traffic by practicing with him.

• Insist that seat belts be worn at all times. Make it a family rule that everyone must wear a seat belt when driving or riding in any car.

• Do not allow drinking and driving. Urge your son NEVER to drink if he is driving and NEVER to accept a ride from someone

who has been drinking.

• Plan for emergencies. Make sure your son knows what to do in case he (or a friend) has been drinking and was supposed to drive home. Let him know that he can call you and you will pick him up, no questions asked. It is also a good idea to make sure he has enough money with him at all times for public transportation or cab fare.

• Choose cars carefully. Base your decision on safety and not image. Investigate the crash-test performance of different vehicles.

Spend money to have certain safety features installed. It is well worth it.

Oh yes, my driving test. The examiner – let’s call him Darth Vader – failed me for going 27 mph in a 25-mph zone. He wanted to impress upon me the importance of speed limits. Fortunately, when I returned for my repeat driving test, Darth was nowhere to be seen, and the Force was with me.

I agree with her. Most bikers are safe, courteous riders. It’s the four-wheel vehicles that usually cause the problems.

As a former high school administrator, I am very familiar with reasons why students are tardy. I would “guesstimate” that 90 percent of tardies are the fault of 10 percent of the student body.

The constantly tardy students are usually not on time because they lack self-discipline and responsibility, and I believe this is also your problem. Unless you stop finding excuses for your tardiness and take control of your time, you will continue to be late to school even if you have a motorbike.

Yesterday we saw a deal in which a good trump fit increased the value of a hand. If one fit is good, just imagine what a double fit will do.

How would you and your partner bid today’s North-South hands?

South opens one heart, and North raises to two hearts. (Yes, North has a maximum and the Losing Trick Count says that he is worth a game-invitational raise, but unless that diamond suit is useful, the hand will prove disappointing to partner. Starting with two hearts seems right to me.) What should happen after that?

South might jump to four hearts, but that is overly hasty. It is much better to rebid three diamonds. Yes, North will think that is a help-suit game-try, which might be made with a weaker suit, but South is interested in his partner’s diamond holding.

Here, North’s hand could not be better. Typically, he would either sign off in three hearts or jump to four hearts.

Now, though, he should raise to four diamonds. This announces the delicious double fit. And South should see the expediency of bidding six diamonds, not six hearts, because the club ruff(s) will be in the shorter trump hand.

In six diamonds, South takes one spade, five hearts, five diamonds and a club ruff in his hand.

Note, though, that there are only 11 tricks with hearts as trumps.
