Business owners plan new start after fire No injuries; Ameliorate Massage, FEET by Karen hope to find new home

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Theresa Winters described her business, Ameliorate Massage in St. Charles, as her favorite place to be. She had been at the location at 826 S. Third St. for nearly four years.

“I wanted to have this office, and I was so happy to have it,” she said. “I was able to make it exactly the way I wanted it, a beautiful, peaceful sanctuary that would welcome everyone in.”

On Sunday, Winters learned the building that housed her business – along with two other businesses and a residential unit – had been destroyed by fire. Though disappointed, Winters said Monday that she lives by a belief that “all things work together for good,” and the longtime St. Charles resident vows to open a new business in the city.

The St. Charles Fire Department reported that it responded to a call for an odor investigation at 5:38 a.m. Sunday. Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said Monday that personnel arrived at 5:43 a.m. and discovered fire in the building’s basement, which was moving upstairs. The fire was extinguished in three hours, he said.

The building’s residents were able to escape, and there were no injuries to them or to firefighters, Schelstreet said.

Schelstreet said a fire report is being prepared, and it is expected to be done in about a week. He said though there are theories about what might have caused the fire, officials are not yet ready to release information about the investigation. He did say it was not considered a suspicious fire at this time.

“It did spread quickly … and we’re focusing on a couple of things,” Schelstreet said.

He said damage was estimated at $350,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents. He said it was a particular challenge for firefighters because of heavy snow that was falling, along with

The property actually included two addresses – 826 S. Third St. and 828 S. Third St., St. Charles. In addition to Ameliorate Massage, the building housed a business called FEET

by Karen Reflexology, run by Karen Heftman, as well as a hair salon, The Snippery.

There also were tenants who lived in the upstairs area.

Heftman said she had operated FEET by Karen since June 2013, subletting her area from Winters. She was at the scene of the fire on Sunday, and she said she felt grateful that nobody was hurt. On Sat-

urday, she said, she was working at the business.

“It could have happened at any time,” she said.

Heftman said her business was a dream, and she said she found a warmth and a connection with Winters.

She said Sunday was “a sad day.” She said everything had been “completely demolished.” But, like Winters, she said she would look to reopen her business at a new location.

Though she said she would prefer to open a business in St. Charles, she is a Hampshire-area resident and might consider that area as well.

Heftman said she made connections in the Tri-Cities area, at LivingWell and the Holmstad, and had just become a member of the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce. She said she was touched by the outpouring of well wishes and support, calling it “more than I could have imagined.”

“I felt pretty popular in such a short time there,” she said.

Winters called the location “a great spot.” She was out of town at the time of the fire, but she said she was saddened when she saw a photo taken by a neighbor as officials were doing their duty of clearing the scene.

“My awning, it was personally handcrafted for me, and that was one of the last things the bulldozer ended up bringing down,” she said. “It was such an eye-catcher, beautiful and attractive.”

But, she said, she is hoping a new location will present itself.

“The healing will continue,” Winters said.

Police warn of car burglaries in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is encouraging motorists to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight after a string of burglaries were reported throughout the city.

Items including a laptop case, a purse, a navigation unit, loose change and gift

cards were reported stolen from vehicles Wednesday and Thursday, police spokesperson Lisa Blackwell said.

The thefts occurred overnight into early morning at residences on the 0-100 block of McKinley Street, 1200 block of Jewel Avenue and on the 1600 block of South 13th Avenue, Blackwell said.

All of the vehicles were unlocked, she said. She advises

motorists to lock their cars and either remove their valuables or hide them from view.

People also should be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity, such as loud or unusual noises, Blackwell said.

“If anything looks out of place, don’t hesitate to call,” she said. “Call the police. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

8LOCAL BRIEFS Batavia to offer driver’s exam review course BATAVIA – Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with the Eastside Community Center of the Batavia Park District, will offer a Rules of the Road review course for all citizens in the Batavia area from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the community center, 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia.

The course is free, and its purpose is to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination.

The course prepares applicants for the general written and road exams, and also provides information on the vision screening.

Fox Valley Hospice in need of volunteers GENEVA – Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice, a community-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving those with life-threatening illnesses and the bereaved, is in need of volunteers to serve clients in the Fox Valley area.

Batavia to apply for grant funds for river corridor study Focus will be on Fox River; estimated cost is $130K

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – On Monday, aldermen approved city staff applying to Kane County for a share of its Community Development Block Grant funds instead of applying for Riverboat funds to do a study of the Fox River corridor.

Community Development Director Scott Buening said the study is necessary as the corridor is in the heart of the Batavia community.

Last year, the city applied for a Riverboat grant for the same study, but did not receive funds due to significant competition for the grants.

The study is estimated to cost $130,000.

The city would allocate $30,000 for in-house services, such as engineering and planning, $50,000 would be

Weather makes travel treacherous Conditions seem to impact rural, western Kane County more than cities

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Roads in Kane County remained slick with ice and covered with drifting snow Monday, prompting authorities to urge people to stay home if possible.

The weather appeared to impact rural, western Kane County more than the cities. St. Charles, for example, had no significant traffic incidents to report, Interim Police Chief Steve Huffman said.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesperson for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said blowing snow continued to limit visibility Monday on such roads as Route 47.

“It was pretty close to blizzard-like,” Gengler said, noting some roads were down to one lane.

He expected problems for Monday evening because many north-south roads were affected by drifting snow. He singled out Route 47 north of Route 64 as especially problematic.

“Parts of Route 47 in this stretch have drifts across the southbound lane of traffic that are as high as a car,” Gengler said in an email.

By Monday, the sheriff’s office was receiving isolated reports of stuck motorists, Gengler said. Over the weekend, he said, the problem was more widespread, with upwards of 20 vehicles stuck in random spots on Route 38 between Elburn and Maple Park.

Gengler said deputies were too busy to provide details about the individual crashes but said they weren’t serious. In the Randall Road incident, he said, the motorist lost control on a slick por-

tion of the road, crossed the center line and flipped once the vehicle hit snow.

Hoffman expects travel will remain hazardous until midweek.

“This is going to be like this probably through Wednesday because the salt’s not melting the ice,” he said.

“It’s dangerous.”

As a designated warming center in St. Charles, the Lazarus House was, as Executive Director Liz Eakins said, “very, very busy” Monday.

But, she said, the facility at 214 Walnut St. wasn’t at capacity.

“We haven’t had to turn anybody away, and we never will,” Eakins said. “We are just so grateful to have this warm, safe place for folks in our communities to be housed and to be well fed.”

A wind chill warning remains in effect until noon today for northern Illinois, as the forecast calls for wind chills of 30 below zero to 50 below zero.

Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said such warnings are issued once wind chills reach 30 below zero.

“That’s not common at all for northern Illinois,” he said.

Wind chills Monday morning reached 47 below zero in Aurora, Friedlein said. Winds were gusting around 30 to 33 mph but should gradually diminish, he said, noting open areas could experience blowing snow into this morning.

Subzero temperatures are expected to remain in the area through noon today, which would total 36 consecutive hours with temperatures below zero, he said.

The longest stretch of subzero temperatures for Chicago dates to December 1983, when officials recorded 98 consecutive hours below zero, Friedlein said.

More recently, he said, the winter of 1994 had 44 consecutive hours of below-zero temperatures, and early February 1996 had 66 consecutive hours of subzero temperatures.

Dr. Steve Holtsford, who worked in Delnor Hospital’s emergency room Monday, encouraged people to stay home if possible to avoid the dangers of frostbite.

Symptoms of frostbite include white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy and numbness.

Monday, the city of St. Charles canceled its night meetings; Geneva City Hall closed; and most Kane County forest preserves closed. Refuse pickup also was delayed by one day in Sugar Grove, St. Charles, Batavia and Geneva.

But those with cabin fever had at least one place to go – Funway in Batavia.

and bumper cars – opened at 11 a.m. Monday and will open at the same time today. Usually, she said, it opens at 4 p.m.

She stressed that all employees worked on a voluntary basis.

“We’ve had a pretty good turnout today,” she said Monday afternoon. “Funway prides itself in being a fun and safe environment.”

“We’ve been doing the same thing for a while,” recreation supervisor Kristin Bykowski said, noting attendance has been declining in recent years.

“We really need to pick their brains.”

Middle and high school students are invited to share their ideas during focus group meetings this week and next at the Peg Bond Center, 151 Island Ave., Batavia.

Meetings for high school students are set from 7 to 8 p.m. today and Jan. 15.

Middle school students can share feedback from 7 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday and Jan. 14.

Refreshments will be served, and all ideas are welcome.

Later, Bykowski said, the park district will seek input from parents and community organizations. The park district hopes to preview some of the ideas in its summer book with the goal of implementing programming by the start of the school year, Bykowski said.

While sledding, individuals noticed an increased amount of hay bales could be used to ensure safer rides.

“I’ve seen little kids smash

into trees [and] break their noses; these hay bales need to extend farther,” Sugar Grove resident Michael Hammond, 14, said. “And people take [the hay bales] and ride them down the hill.”

In addition, Sugar Grove resident Jacob Urban, 15, said he thinks taller stacks of hay bales would be beneficial to sledders.

“I don’t think the one hay bale in front of the one tree is going to help – I think that’s just going to make it worse because you’re going to plant [into the hay bale] and then hit the tree,” Urban said.

Elgin resident Dean Ashton, 47, visited Johnson’s Mound with his wife and two children. “[We] put [our kids] in the front of the sled so we kind of cradle them while sledding down,” Ashton said.

The Ashtons said they went sledding Saturday to beat cabin fever before the winter temperatures dropped to frigid lows.

ELBURN – At Johnson’s Mound in Elburn, sledding ranges from traditional to adventurous in order to satisfy each sledder’s creativity.

On Saturday, sledders came equipped with a wide variety of sleds – anything from disks and snowboards to an air mattress and kiddie pool.

Groups of sledders were taking advantage of ideal sledding conditions, with a fresh layer of snow on the ground.

The mound is split into two sledding hills, separated by a strip of trees.

One hill is shorter and padded with a thick layer of snow while the other features a long, steep drop and clusters of icy bumps. Hay bales are used to indicate walk-up paths.

“This year it’s nice because there’s ice and it’s not muddy so it makes [us] go faster,” Maple Park resident Elizabeth Bettag, 19, said. “[We] get a lot

Village plans emergency notification system test

Traffic safety campaign nets three DUI arrests

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – The Village of North Aurora will conduct a test of its new Nixle 360 emergency notification system beginning at 9 a.m. today, according to a news release issued by the North Aurora Police Department.

The test will consist of an automated phone call to listed and unlisted AT&T landline telephone lines in the village. The message will be begin with an introduction

by Village President Dale Berman, followed by the test message, the release stated.

Residents who receive their phone service from Comcast will not receive the test call because officials still are in the process of obtaining an emergency phone number database from Comcast.

The Nixle 360 system is an Internet-based emergency notification system that combines phone calls, emails and text messages to reach residents and subscribers. The

system replaces the Reverse 911 system, a hardware-based phone call system purchased in 2007 that has become outdated, the release stated.

The new system will be utilized by all village departments to notify residents and subscribers of urgent or emergency information.

Once the new Nixle 360 system is operational, village officials will share information on how to register to receive emails as well as calls and text messages on a cellphone.

In addition to the DUI arrests, police issued these citations: 18 for seat-belt violations; one for driving with a suspended or revoked

license; three for driving without insurance; 10 for speeding; and four for other violations.

Officers also gave 40 warnings for various violations.

The enforcement period, which ended Sunday, was done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

It was part of a statewide program that aims to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

John was raised in Dixon and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II in the Pacific. Before and after the war, he attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1949. He married Julia “Julie” Marloth on Jan. 11, 1947, and together they raised six children.

The family moved to St. Charles in 1954; he and Julie resided there until they moved to Geneva six years ago. John was a real estate developer and the owner of a general contracting company specializing in industrial and commercial construction.

John was a longtime member of St. Patrick Church, served on the parish council and finance council, and he and Julie were honorary chairpersons of the capital campaign to build the St. Patrick Crane Road church.

He was a steadfast supporter of the University of Notre Dame.

He played basketball for the Fighting Irish and was a member of the Monogram Club; he later served on the University’s Business Advisory Council.

In addition, he and Julie made significant contributions to capital

campaigns for Notre Dame.

He is survived by his wife, Julie; his children, William (Elizabeth) of St. Charles; Mary Parker of Wild Rose, Wis.; Martin (Eve) of Santa Fe, N.M.; Louise (Michael) Lachapelle of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; James (Irene) of Mequon, Wis.; and Kathryn (Jay) Reynolds of St. Charles; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Winifred (Don) Youngmark of Dixon and MaryLu McCall of Sugar Grove.

He was preceded in death by his infant grandson, John Timothy Loftus.

The visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St. (three blocks west of the river and one block south of Route 64), St. Charles.

Funeral services will begin with

prayers at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, before proceeding to St. Patrick Catholic Church, 408 Cedar St., St. Charles, to celebrate Mass at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in Prairie Cemetery in St. Charles.

KANEVILLE TOWNSHIP – Morton H. “Mort” Haffey, 67, of Kaneville Township, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

He was born Nov. 5, 1946, in Geneva, the son of Morton and Grace (Rumple) Haffey.

Mort owned and operated several farms in Kane County and truly loved his work. He was a train enthusiast. Mort was a loving father, grandfather and brother and will be missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Mort is survived by his children, Tammy Haffey and John Haffey, both of Maple Park; grandchildren, Krystal and Heather; sister, Darlene Carlson of Lake Holiday; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Jack.

While working as a student in the Kaneland High School cafeteria, he met his high school sweetheart, Patricia O’Brien. Ron and Pat wed on Feb. 23, 1963.

After they were married, Ron worked as a farmhand for the Flint family before becoming a drywall taper for Painter’s District Council 30.

While Ron worked hard on the job, his passion was serving as an Elburn Lions Club member.

Ron and Pat spent many of their free hours at the park helping at company picnics, Elburn Days and other events. Ron was a past Lions Club president and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 1988.

Health changes limited Ron’s involvement in Lions events in recent years. He greatly missed the park and camaraderie he felt there.

Ron’s quick smile and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

He was a Chicago Cubs fan and began watching many games on television when his health declined. Like all Cub fans, Ron experienced the ups and downs of their play and was known to let a few swear words fly when something went awry for his team.

Ron is survived by his children, Rona Henne of Batavia, Lori (John) Hoffman of Aurora and Jeff Henne of Elburn.

He also leaves his grandchildren, Kevin (Amanda) Hoffman of Yorkville, Kyle Hoffman and fiancée Bailey Peterson of Yorkville, Madison Hoffman of Aurora, Nick and Melanie Henne of Elburn and Michael Henne of Batavia; as well as his sister, Lorraine Kaus of DeKalb; and several nieces and nephews. Ron’s first great-grandchild, Quinn Hoffman, is due to arrive in March. Ron also leaves his faithful canine companion, Snoops, whom he loved despite her less-than-ideal manners.

Ron preceded in death by his wife, Pat, whom he has missed dearly; parents; and brother, Roger.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Larry Erickson for faithfully driving Dad into Elburn for breakfast in recent years; his caregiver Debbie Brandau for her companionship and long talks on the porch with Dad; and Michelle Mars, Dad’s favorite waitress at Papa G’s, for the laughs she shared with him.

Just a trim THE WASHINGTON POST That didn’t take long – President Barack Obama’s signature on a hard-won House-Senate budget deal was barely dry before members of Congress from both parties began falling all over themselves to undo one of its provisions.

We refer to the 1 percentage-point reduction in military pension annual cost-of-living increases, which provides $6 billion in savings over 10 years, intended, in part, to restore badly needed funds for current national defense.

Bowing to the powerful military retiree lobby, Senate Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, N.H., and House Republicans Martha Roby, Ala., and Michael G. Fitzpatrick, Pa., have introduced bills that would replace the pension trim with, respectively, higher corporate tax collections or a reduction in child tax credits for low-income families.

Opponents of the provision decry its purported unfairness to those who have served at great risk in the past, and they assert that it will harm recruitment and retention in the future. The facts suggest otherwise.

For one thing, the cut is an exceedingly modest one on a pension plan that already is far more generous than private-sector equivalents. For someone who enlisted at age 18 and retired as an Army sergeant first class at 38, lifetime retirement pay would decline from $1.734 million to $1.626 million, according to House Budget Committee staff. And that $1.626 million would still be filled out with generous military health coverage and earnings for working in the

civilian sector, which most military retirees do.

This is not “breaking faith with the promise that was made to these folks that have waged war for this nation for the last 12 years,” as the president of the Military Officers Association of America, Vice Adm. Norbert Ryan, said Thursday on “PBS NewsHour.” It is a small shift in resources toward training and equipping those who might have to defend us in the future.

Rhetoric notwithstanding, many of the war-fighters who bear the biggest combat burdens get no pension at all; only one-eighth of enlisted personnel serve the 20 years necessary to qualify, according to a 2011 report by the Defense Business Board.

As these numbers imply, most recruits didn’t join for the pension.

“Surveys consistently report that military retirement has little value in recruitment or retention for at least the first 10 years of service,” the board found.

It’s impossible to say whether either the Democratic or Republican proposals to undo the pension trim will pass; their respective “pay-fors” seem equally unacceptable to members of the opposing party, while the White House seems disinclined to revisit the issue.

It’s sufficiently depressing that the debate sank to this level so quickly.

Like civilian entitlements, military retirement — a $50 billion-plus item in the defense budget — is overdue for deeper reforms, such as adjustment to the allor-nothing 20-year service requirement. And it does the men and women of our armed forces no dishonor to say so.

Davidson on upswing for North

S

t. Charles North junior forward Nichole Davidson aspired to play collegiately from the time she first picked up a basketball as a first-grader.

Doubling her scoring average from last season reinforces the notion that Davidson’s best basketball still is ahead of her.

So far, so good this season entering Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division road game at Geneva. One of the area’s most improved players, Davidson is hovering around 17 points a game – approaching twice her mark of 9.4 as a sophomore – while her intangibles keep trending upward, too.

“Last year, I didn’t have as much confidence as I should have,” Davidson said. “This year, I have it with me all the time.”

Davidson admittedly felt nerves during key spots last

season, whether she took aim with long jumpers or was called on to drive the lane.

At 5-foot-11, she offers first-year North coach Sean Masoncup the luxury to do both. Davidson’s range extends to within a few steps inside the arc, and she’s agile enough to beat most posts to the basket if other teams use bigs to defend her.

After studying tape from former coach Colleen Backer’s final season at North, Masoncup found Davidson “fit into the system perfectly.”

She is free to use her athleticism offensively or as North gets into transition.

The biggest difference is her newfound ability to go strong to the basket or at least be a more solid decision-maker with the ball.

“She’s just grown as a basketball player while her teammates have done a good job of getting her open,” Masoncup said. “She’s definitely had the hot hand lately.”

Davidson scored 29, 25 and 22 points in the North Stars’ past three games at DundeeCrown’s Charger Classic, helping the team go 2-2 and earn a tournament split after struggling in its opener against eventual champion New Trier.

Even as Naperville Central defended her with a box-and-one after halftime in the Classic finale, Davidson adapted to the extra attention by ratcheting up her own ‘D.’ “Coach has told me that this year is my year to prove to everyone that I’m better, and I needed to show my strength,” Davidson said.

“I’ve just been pushing myself every game.”

Davidson’s added urgency has rubbed off on younger teammates, which should prove beneficial for a team that mostly relies on underclassmen.

Sophomore forward Morgan Rosencrants, another dual-threat type, especially has lauded her friend’s abili-

ty to inspire her fundamental development. Like Davidson, Rosencrants played in each of North’s 29 games as a freshman, averaging 7.6 points, third-most on the team.

“We didn’t really know each other, and then we were on the same team together,” Rosencrants said. “She helped me and I helped her, and that definitely brought us closer.”

With Monday’s practice canceled because of severe cold weather that closed schools around the region, North took an impromptu team-bonding trip to St. Charles Bowl.

While Davidson finished first on the team, she made sure not to get ahead of herself. Even a meager bowling average transcends the best basketball average, but confidence always can be a constant.

“I just can’t be nervous and have to know it’s going to go in, so I have to try my best,” Davidson said.

“We’re more organized.

We’re more structured. We challenge the kids daily and expect a lot out of them,” Smalley said. “It’s no longer the Little League mindset.

They seem to respond well from it all the time. You treat them like an adult, they’ll act like an adult. You treat them like a kid, they’ll act like a kid.”

Smalley, 26, won nine games in 2009 and compiled a 2.73 ERA to lead the A’s system and earn accolades as organizational pitcher of the year.

“Smalls, he had a [heck] of a year that year,” said then-Cougars manager Steve Scarsone, who is entering his second season with Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.

The momentum quickly derailed. When Smalley returned to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in July 2010, it wasn’t with much revelry.

Struggles with Advanced-A Stockton (Calif.) prompted an unplanned homecoming, and Smalley was out of the game less than a year later.

Admitting he’s felt the itch to give pitching another chance, Smalley eventually restrains himself, knowing he’s likely got a better window into the game now.

“Just kind of tried to start a brand down here, you know what I mean?” he said. “It’s gone well. It’s all reputation-based. Getting the youth into the game.”

Kenny Smalley keeps telling his girlfriend he’ll bring her to Chicago one of these days.

The weather differences between home and his current southern California surroundings aren’t the half of it.

A Batavia and St. Charles North product who became the first native “Kane County” Cougar as an emerging right-hander in 2009, Smalley happily focused his baseball radar on overseeing developing talent when his own playing career stalled.

“There’s 6-foot-5 lefties who throw 95 [mph] on every block out here,” said Smalley, who transferred to St. Charles North after beginning his high school Kenny Smalley career at Batavia. “But there’s no organization, no structure.”

That’s where Smalley intends to come in. Since spring training 2011 – his final days in professional ball after the parent Oakland A’s released him – Smalley has plotted and worked to build his reputation as a youth and high school coach.

He started by putting his name and credentials on Craigslist, took on the few clients who called, gained former Cougars teammate Matt Fitts as a partner and guided a successful youth travel team.

Word-of-mouth eventually spread, bringing former Major League first baseman Tony Clark and his father, Art, as backers for what now is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization. The venture is aligned with Bulldogs Elite baseball club – the nickname for the 12U to 15U program merely a coincidence to Smalley’s Batavia days – and X-Factor Baseball/Softball Academy, a 16,000 square-foot facility in Corona, Calif., about 100 miles north of San Diego.

NOTEWORTHY Evanston game a head-scratcher for Saints Saturday night’s loss at Evanston was one of the most perplexing games coach Pat Woods has seen with the Saints.

East played a lights-out first half, leading a quality Wildkits team, 38-22, at the break, before turning in a second-half clunker that Woods said was “the complete opposite” performance en route to a 72-64 loss.

What happened?

“I think I’m still trying to figure it out, and it’s been almost 24 hours,” Woods said on Sunday.

A Saints backcourt led by Dom Adduci and Cole Gentry is among the Upstate Eight Conference’s finest, but Woods said taking care of the ball proved problematic as Evanston wrestled control of the game.

“Unfortunately, our guardplay hurt us [Saturday], and that’s usually our strength,” Woods said. “In the second half it hurt us, not being able to play with the lead and making good decisions with the ball.”

The loss was East’s second in a row, as the Saints dropped to 8-7. East was scheduled to return to action tonight against Glenbard West but that game is one of many weather casualties today. It has been rescheduled for Wednesday.

Woods is eager to see how the Saints bounce back from the second-half meltdown in Evanston.

“We’re either going to learn a lot from that and end up being really good or, if we continue down that path, we’re going to struggle,” Woods said. “I think we’ll end up being really good because

we have that type of talent, and as long as we get Dave (Mason) back, he’s going to fill a gap we need.”

Mason, a 6-foot-7 senior, has not played this season after undergoing foot surgery Nov. 15. The Saints had hoped to have him back by now but the healing has taken longer than Woods originally anticipated.

Once Mason returns, forwards such as AJ Washington and Mick Vyzral – who are not true, post players – will receive some welcome support in the paint. Woods said he’s not sure when Mason

will make his season debut.

“At this point we’ve been wrong every time, so I would project before the North game on [Jan. 18] … but we’ve been off on our projections before,” Woods said. “We’ll eventually get him back. Still a lot of season left.”

Ryan David making mark for Kaneland Kaneland sophomore forward Ryan David has worked his way into Kaneland’s starting lineup, and has impressed his big brother in the process.

“I think he’s been awe-

some,” said Drew David, the Knights’ senior point guard.

“He’s really deceptively long.

He definitely does everything we lack in some spots. He definitely picks up the slack in all those areas. I think he’s been a really big player for us.”

Ryan David made a crucial 3-pointer in the third quarter of Saturday’s United Center game against Geneva, beginning a Kaneland rally after Geneva built a 10-point lead late in the quarter. The Knights stormed back to take a fourth quarter lead before falling, 54-51.

Ryan David providing quality minutes became all the more crucial for Kaneland due to a pair of injuries that have kept forward/center Jake Gomes and guard Dylan Vaca out of action in recent weeks.

As for the novelty of playing alongside his 6-foot-3 younger brother, Drew David said that faded quickly.

“I don’t really notice it,” Drew David said. “We’re just kind of playing out there.

We’ve played a lot in the driveway and stuff, so it’s not really that different.”

No UC game for Ramblers Mooseheart was originally scheduled to play Gage Park today at the United Center, but that will not happen because Gage Park did not sell its necessary allotment of tickets, said Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens.

The nonconference game was then shifted to Mooseheart but has been moved from today to Friday because of the weather.

Geneva sinks Kaneland in dramatic fashion at UC

After scoring 41 points on the University of Illinois’ home floor in a Geneva comeback win last month, Navigato again rose to the occasion in a glitzy setting, drilling a decisive 3-pointer with 3 seconds to go Saturday at the United Center as the Vikings defeated Kaneland, 54-51.

Navigato scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter. His hesitance to declare which marquee game is the season’s highlight to date was in stark contrast to the decisiveness with which he played when the Vikings needed their star to bail them out of fourth quarter trouble.

“Just to play on this floor was awesome, especially with this group of guys,” Navigato said. “It was amazing. I’ll remember this forever.”

Kaneland senior Ty Carlson expressed similar sentiments after his own lategame dagger.

style at the United Center, sinking a dramatic 3-pointer to tie the score at 51 with 15 seconds to go in the game.

After a timeout, Geneva had possession with 9.4 seconds to play.

“We went to a 1-3-1,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said. “I was hoping they were maybe drawing something up for [man-to-man defense].

Unfortunately, I think our contest was a 5-10 kid and another 5-10 kid against a 6-5 kid. Nate can shoot over that.

He made a big shot. He’s a Division I player. Big-time players rise in big-time moments, and that’s what he did.”

After a timeout, the Knights had only 3.3 seconds with which to work. The Vikings elected to foul Kaneland’s Drew David with 2.3 seconds left rather than let the Knights (7-4) shoot a potentially tying 3-pointer.

David missed both free

throws – the second intentionally – and Kaneland senior John Pruett slapped the rebound toward Connor Fedderly in the corner, but Fedderly’s desperation 3-point try was off line, sealing the fifth win in a row for the Vikings (13-3).

Navigato’s late surge distracted from the big-time performance by Carlson, who scored a game-high 21 points.

In addition to his tying 3-pointer with 15 seconds left, Carlson made 3-pointers to bring Kaneland within 20-19 at the end of the first half and to within 37-33 on a bizarre buzzer-beater to end the third quarter.

Carlson tracked down a long rebound and heaved an off-balance, wild shot that hit the heel of the rim with a thud, then dropped in.

Carlson said the shot was “a brick,” but oh, well.

“I just always try to get offensive rebounds. When I saw it go up, I went for it. I didn’t know where I was but I just put it up, and luckily it went in,” said Carlson, as members of the Luvabulls waited to take over the Kaneland locker room.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM If you can’t afford a rooster or running deer weathervane, or any other 19th-century weathervane made by an important company, you might be able to find a homemade example.

Most folk-art collectors consider all weathervanes, commercially made or homemade, to be folk art. Prices are highest for the most elaborate 3-D vanes by known makers. Homemade vanes often are cut from sheets of iron to look like silhouettes of deer, men, animals, birds, cars, trains, Indians, flags or occupational examples, like a photographer with a camera or a sailor with a telescope. It is difficult to date a homemade weathervane. Collectors pay the highest auction prices for good design, unusual subjects, good paint and old patina. Bullet holes, missing paint and dents don’t seem to lower the value if the cutout is unusual, perhaps a 1930s car or a large and artistic whale.

Some homemade vanes sell for thousands of dollars, but others might turn up at your local yard sale or flea market.

Whirligig weathervanes, often of wood, also are going up in price.

Horses, roosters and eagles are the most popular shapes today and, unfortunately, often are the most reproduced. Always look in the backyard, in the garage and up at the roof when going to an estate or house sale. Buyers often overlook outdoor folk art. *** Q: Years ago, I was given a very heavy glass vase. It’s 6 inches high by 4 1/2 inches wide and is made of black cased glass within clear glass.

A: The Kosta glassworks factory in Sweden dates back to 1742. Its name is a combination of the last names of the two founders, Koskull and Stael. Kosta manufactured only window glass, glass for light fixtures and drinking glasses until the late 1890s, when it hired its own designers and started making art glass. Glass artist Vicke Lindstrand (1904-1983), who had previously worked at Orrefors, was Kosta’s artistic director from 1950 to 1973.

During Lindstrand’s tenure, model numbers starting with a “1” were “production vases” made in large quantities. The number 1556 on your vase probably is the model number.

Kosta merged with Boda and Afors in 1976 and became Kosta Boda, so it’s likely your vase was made before 1976. In 1989 Kosta Boda merged with Orrefors and was renamed Orrefors Kosta Boda. Then, in 2005, the company was sold to the New Wave Group, which closed the Orrefors factory and today uses only the Kosta Boda label.

While your vase may not be rare or extremely valuable, it still is a good piece of Swedish art glass. *** Q: Could you tell me the value of a set of dining-room furniture made by American of Martinsville? The walnut set, which was purchased new in 1942, includes a table, six chairs, sideboard, china cabinet and hutch.

A: American of Martinsville was founded in 1906 in Martinsville, Va. It made only bedroom sets until the 1920s, when it introduced dining-room sets.

If a mug’s design is unusual and the mug was issued in limited quantity, it might be of interest to collectors. A: It’s a singletree, which also is often called a “whiffletree” or “whippletree.” It was used to hitch the traces of a horse’s harness to a plow or other implement. William Louden (1841-1931) held several patents for improvements to farm equipment. He invented a hay carrier in 1867 and founded Louden Manufacturing Works in Fairfield, Iowa, a year later to manufacture hay carriers and other farm equipment. From 1906 to 1939, the company, by then named Louden Machinery Co., also designed barns.

Louden Machinery Co. was sold in 1956 and its farm equipment was not made after 1965. Singletrees don’t show up for sale very often. When they do, they usually sell for under $50. *** Tip: Look carefully at a piece of cut glass before you buy it.

Fashion bloggers Tom and Lorenzo strike chord with ‘snark, sass & style’

By SORAYA NADIA MCDONALD The Washington Post Leave it to a bunch of unwitting sports nuts to crash a website run by two gay men who make a living telling celebrities, “Girl, that’s not your dress.”

But that’s what happened to Tom Fitzgerald and Lorenzo Marquez, creators of TomandLorenzo.com, a fashion and pop-culture blog that offers smart, sharply written, but never mean criticism of celebrity style. TLo, as the duo is known to devotees, wrote a post in August 2012 about tennis star Serena Williams, who’d worn a red form-fitting Victoria Beckham dress for a “Late Show” appearance. The post was linked by a bunch of bigger sports sites, generating so much traffic that TomandLorenzo.com crashed.

To this day, it’s their most popular post.

But it’s the site’s second mostviewed post – a 6,000-word “Mad Men” essay – that helps to explain the 9 million page views per month chalked up by TLo and distinguishes the duo in a field of culture bloggers.

“They’re the perfect combination of snark, sass & style. And I learn stuff too!,” tweeted Mary Beth Mosley, one of TLo’s “bitter kittens” (a.k.a. dedicated fans).

“Being a gay man in a semi-rural area, Tom & Lorenzo are the gay grandfathers I have been looking for my entire life,” Jake Bowen wrote in an email.

“Mad Men” is one of the most heavily analyzed television shows on the Internet despite its relatively small audience (the sixth season finale in June had a series-high 2.7 million viewers). But Fitzgerald and Marquez found a niche.

In addition to offering show recaps, whenever new episodes are airing they publish the Wednesday feature “Mad Style,” which interprets the choices of costume designer Janie Bryant.

“Tom and Lorenzo’s ability to follow a character’s development through the costume design of ‘Mad Men’ continues to amaze me and leaves me with a feeling of awe,” Bryant wrote in an

In February, Fitzgerald and Marquez, both 47, will release their book, “Everyone Wants to Be Me or Do Me: Tom & Lorenzo’s Fabulous & Opinionated Guide to Celebrity Life & Style.”

When a lady star does well on the red carpet, they give her a “Werq!” in the spirit of Ru Paul. But when she experiences missteps, they generally don’t excoriate her for it. They tell her to fire her stylists. Or they tell her, “Girl, that’s not your dress.”

Their criticism isn’t limited to women. TomandLorenzo.com is one of the few sites that doles its hilariously tetchy commentary on male and female stars alike. A regular reader knows a picture of Johnny Depp in leather fringe and denim is going to elicit the words “elderly gay wind chime.”

It may seem silly to obsess about these things, but Fitzgerald and

Marquez have pulled back the curtain on the theatrics and strategies of the red carpet, and there’s nothing simple about it. It’s an event that’s just as highly orchestrated as a wedding, all for the sake of selling you something.

“When you feature a red-carpet post, you’re promoting the designer who gave them the clothes, the stylist who styled them – even if you don’t name the person – the shoes, the bag, everything. The red carpet is the phoniest thing in the world, and there is so much money on the line,” Fitzgerald said. “The minute that stiletto hits the red carpet and she pivots out of her limo seat and stands up, it’s all about promoting her, promoting her movie, promoting her dress, promoting her shoes, promoting her jewelry. So much is on the line.”

“Everything is calculated,” Marquez added.

“Right! This is why we’re so damn critical,” Fitzgerald said. “I would never criticize a person in the real world the way I critique someone wearing $75,000 worth of stuff to promote a $200 million project.”

Parents wonder if having second child is worth it Dear Abby: My husband and I are happily married and will celebrate 15 years of marriage next year. We have a 5-year-old daughter. Our dilemma is whether or not we should have another child.

I’m 38 and my husband is 40.

We have become comfortable with the fact that our daughter is getting more independent. We plan on doing a lot of traveling, and I will change jobs after I complete school. We are not sure about starting over with a baby.

We are doing OK financially, and if we have a second child, it would have to be within the next year, while I finish my classes and can be home to be with the baby.

Dear Reader: One of the liver’s many jobs is detoxification – ridding the blood of toxins. Cirrhosis, a liver disease, interferes with the liver’s ability to detoxify substances in the blood.

Your liver sees medications as toxins. When your liver is compromised, medications that are normally considered “safe” may no longer be safe for you.

The safest pain medicine for someone with cirrhosis is acetaminophen (Tylenol). However, even this is more risky in people with cirrhosis. That’s because this medicine can be toxic to the liver. There is some evidence that it may be more likely to injure a liver already damaged, such as from cirrhosis.

I advise patients with cirrhosis not to take more than 2,000 milligrams (mg) in one day, or more than 650 mg per dose. That’s the equivalent of two regular-strength acetaminophen tablets. Take acetaminophen for the shortest time as possible. Some doctors believe it’s OK for people with cirrhosis to take as much as 3,000 milligrams (mg) in one day, but

Another frequently used non-prescription class of painkillers is the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen.

Unfortunately, cirrhosis raises the risk of internal bleeding from NSAIDs. Also, cirrhosis makes the kidneys more vulnerable to injury from drugs, particularly NSAIDs. So I think it’s best for people with cirrhosis to avoid NSAIDs. When possible, use non-drug strategies to relieve pain. Here are some strategies to try when you experience a tension headache: • Ice or heat, and rest. Numb the pain with an ice pack, wrapped in a towel and applied to your forehead and temples for 15 minutes at a time. If muscle tension accompanies your head pain, apply heat packs to your neck and the back of your head.

• Tai chi and yoga appear to reduce headache frequency and severity. But they don’t help relieve a headache once it has begun.

• Acupuncture involves in-

serting fine needles into the skin.

This may release endorphins, the body’s natural painkilling chemicals. Acupuncture can be used for relieving head pain as it occurs and for reducing headache frequency.

• Biofeedback. Head pain is often triggered by muscle tension.

During biofeedback sessions you’ll learn to recognize when you’re tensing up the muscles in the back, neck, shoulders or head – and to relax them before they cause pain. Biofeedback treats and prevents tension headaches.

• Massage. I’ve had several patients who have found that massage of the muscles in the back of the neck gave them relief, though I know of no studies proving its value.

Finally, avoid situations that seem to bring on your tension headaches, such as working at a computer uninterrupted for several hours, or arguments with your children. It may reduce the number of tension headaches you get, and it won’t damage your liver.

Mom’s a weekend alcoholic Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and live with my mother, who is divorced from my father and also from her second husband. During the week, when my mother works, she tells me how good I am, how much she loves me and how proud she is of me.

But on the weekends, she turns into a monster. Mom is an alcoholic. She has a good job and rarely misses work because she only drinks on the weekends. When she is drinking, she is a different person. She says she hates me and wishes I were never born.

I try to tell her to stop drinking, but she just says to mind my own business. She never hits me, but she threatens to. Sometimes I wonder if, deep down, she really does hate me.

What should I do when she is drinking? I would rather have no mother than one who drinks. – Nameless, Brunswick, Ga. Dear Nameless: You need to join Alateen.

Your mother does love her daughter, but her love is trumped by drinking. Alcoholics usually hate themselves, which causes them to act as though they hate everyone around them. Because they can’t face their self-loathing, they take their hostility out on others. Don’t argue with Mom when she’s drinking; indeed, whenever possible,

You will learn in Alateen that alcoholism is a disease. Though it cannot be cured, alcoholics can choose to stop hating themselves, stop drinking alcohol and begin leading happy, productive and loving lives. I know this is what you want for your mom. With courage, perseverance and support from Alateen, you can help bring this about.

Dr. Wallace: I’m in my first year of college and required to pass two semesters of a foreign language. I decided to take French, but I’m having a tough time. I took three years of Spanish in high school and didn’t have one problem. That’s probably because my parents and I speak Spanish at home.

My professor advised me to drop French with no grade and take Spanish next semester. I really wanted to learn another language, but not at the expense of my grade point average. What do you think I should do? – Lupe, El Paso, Tex. Dear Lupe: Take your professor’s advice. It is very difficult and time-consuming to learn a foreign language at the college level without prior classwork at the secondary-school level.

Fulfill your foreign language requirement by taking Spanish.

The International Bridge Press Association jury does a tough job in choosing the annual award winners in four categories – bidding, declarer play, defense and juniors.

This deal, which would have been my junior winner, could have also been in the declarer-play list. South was Adam Kaplan of New Port Richie, Fla. In the auction, one club showed 16-plus points; four clubs was a control-bid (cuebid); four spades was Roman Key-Card Blackwood; five clubs indicated one key-card (an ace or the heart king); five clubs asked for the heart queen; and six hearts showed that card and denied a side-suit king.

After winning with dummy’s spade ace, declarer cashed the heart ace. When East dropped the 10, South deduced that hearts were 3-1. He cashed dummy’s club king, played a club to his ace, and led his last spade.

If West had found the best defense, discarding a diamond, declarer would have won with dummy’s spade king and led another spade, discarding his remaining diamond – the key play. Probably East would have led a spade, but Kaplan would have ruffed high, played a diamond to dummy’s ace, ruffed dummy’s diamond seven, and crossruffed the rest of the tricks.

Instead, West trumped the second spade and returned his third heart. Kaplan claimed, saying that he would discard his last diamond on dummy’s spade king and ruff his two low clubs on the board.

Brilliant, especially for someone who was only 16 years old.
