Batavia aldermen hire law firm to diversify city energy portfolio

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council on Monday took another step toward addressing residents’ ongoing concerns regarding the city’s relationship with the Prairie State Energy Campus.

Batavia aldermen voted, 12-0, to approve an agreement for legal services with the Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block with a focus of broadening the city’s energy portfolio.

“The ultimate goal is to obtain greater diversification, however that might be obtained,” Batavia City Attorney Kevin Drendel said after the council’s regular meeting.

Aldermen cast their vote Monday after a roughly 40-minute closed session that included agenda items for the purchase and sale of electric power as well as an unrelated item on collective bargaining.

The agreement allows the city to retain Jenner & Block partner Michael Scodro, Dren-

del said during the meeting.

Scodro is being retained to review the city’s transition from a regulated electric market into its current position – an open market – and advise the city on how to best achieve the goal of a balanced and diversified energy portfolio going forward, Drendel said.

Retaining Scodro will give the city ties to more resources and ability for developing options and creative scenarios, Drendel said.

Batavia city officials have come under repeated criticism in recent years for the city’s investment in the downstate Prairie State campus.

In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a long-term power contract to buy electricity from Prairie State.

A class-action lawsuit against Prairie State was refiled toward the end of October, Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath previously said.

If the weather is particularly bad, Shangguan said he might be sitting alone. On Monday, he was joined by Andrew Hoffman, a 25-year-old Sugar Grove resident who works at a tea shop in Naperville. Another Sugar Grove resident, Diana Moore, 45, was at the table with her 6-year-old daughter, Tesla. Later in the night, they were joined by a librarian on a break.

The event is free. Shangguan, 44, on Monday kept filling cups with different kinds of tea.

Some of the tea is for sale at the store. He said some of it comes from the “200 pounds of tea” he said he brought back with him from China. Some of that tea, he said, doesn’t even have a name. People can stay for the whole session, show up later or leave earlier.

He was married and has a young daughter, but he said his wife recently died of cancer.

He returned to Sugar Grove 1∏ years ago.

“I wanted to reboot my life,” Shangguan said.

Java Plus is run by Michael Morkert, who said he was looking to expand his tea selection.

“Every year, I go to a coffee expo, and every year, tea is expanding,” Morkert said. “I’m hearing that tea is the new coffee.”

Shangguan would visit the shop, and after talking with him, Morkert said he knew Shangguan would be a good fit. Morkert said so much of today’s culture is about driving in and driving out, but “I’ve always wanted a place where you can sit down and stay for a

while.” That appealed to Shangguan, who welcomes everybody to his club to relax, unwind and learn a little bit about tea.

Shangguan said he wouldn’t call himself a tea master, and he said he wouldn’t tell people what they should like.

“It’s always an argument – what’s good,” Shangguan said.

“If you like it, it’s good.”

Monday’s session included visitors with different levels of tea experience. Hoffman works

at Adagio Teas in Naperville and said he appreciates what Shangguan has brought to Sugar Grove.

“It was nice to hear something different than what you hear from self-proclaimed tea lovers who don’t know about different teas,” said Hoffman, who said learning about Shangguan’s teas can be an adventure.

Moore said she comes to meet new people and hear about the teas. She said one of her daughters is more interested in teas.

“I usually come every week,” she said.

Shangguan can tell visitors how he acquired the tools he uses. He can show off the tea pots and share stories of buying teas in China that can cost thousands of dollars. He said nobody who visits the tea club would need to make a purchase.

“A lot of this is education,” Shangguan said. “A lot of people don’t know tea. They know Lipton. … It’s education, and it’s chatting. People just don’t do that these days.”

District 303 sets preschool tour dates

Yoga teacher embraces Iyengar style, training

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 will offer tours of its preschool program to interested parents next week, according to a press release.

The tour dates are as follows at the district’s current preschool locations: • 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ferson Creek Elementary School, 38W160 Bolcum Road, St. Charles Township.

• 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Jan. 14 at Norton Creek Elementary School, 2033 Smith Road, West Chicago.

• 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at Fox Ridge Elementary School, 1905 E. Tyler Road, St. Charles.

Registration dates for the 2016-17 academic year will be determined after the school board makes its decision on the facilities options on Monday, according to the release.

The district plans to send registration to returning students as soon as possible, the release states.

The release indicated that some sites could change.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Amy Massat said she was one of those people who took regular yoga and teacher training – only to find yet another form that she embraced, called Iyangar.

The yoga style is named after B.K.S. Iyengar, who died last August. He was the teacher who helped bring Hatha yoga to the west, Massat said.

“It’s a rigorous program,” Massat said. “There is a reason for every posture you are

given. Standing is the starting point for beginners to understand how to use their legs.”

In all, Massat has been doing yoga for nine years. She Amy Massat took regular yoga and did hundreds of hours of training, teaching local classes at yoga studios and park districts.

But when she came to a Iyengar class, Massat found she could not even do a head-

stand.

“I was not physically strong enough,” Massat said.

Massat was taken with the Iyengar style of yoga and became certified in October.

She is one of two certified Iyengar instructors in Kane County, according to the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States website, www.iynaus.org.

Geneva gets ‘Project of the Year’ award for 3rd tier parking deck

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva’s third tier parking deck expansion was named “Project of the Year” by the American Public Works Association Fox Valley Branch.

The award, in the structures category for projects of less than $5 million, was based on safety performance, environmental impact, community relations, accomplishments under adverse conditions and quality control and construction innovations brought to the project, officials said.

“This award recognizes the behind-the-scenes efforts of staff,” Public Works Director Rich Babica said. “And [it] gives them some public recognition of that hard work and dedication that is not always seen by public on a daily basis.”

Babica said one of the “driving forces” of the project was a good example of intergovernmental pre-planning.

“With the Union Pacific [Railroad] third rail coming in the next few years … existing parking is going to be impacted, and we’re going to lose spaces,” Babica said.

Union Pacific and the Illinois Department of Transportation each will invest $45 million for the UP/Metra West line from River Forest

to Melrose Park and from West Chicago to Geneva, officials said last summer.

The city oversaw construction of the $4.5 million parking deck tier that began in August and was funded entirely by grants through Metra. Anticipating the inconvenience

of the deck closure, the city secured two temporary parking locations through an intergovernmental agreement with the Geneva Park District and a lease deal with the First Baptist Church of Geneva.

Officials then worked with Pace Suburban Bus Service to

provide a shuttle service running between those parking lots and the Geneva Metra Station during rush hours.

The deck’s first two levels reopened in February and the third tier opened in May, increasing the parking spaces by 176 for a total of 498, officials said.

The city’s construction consultant, V3 Engineering, prepared the application for the award with help from the city, Walsh Construction and the city’s architectural firm, officials said.

The parking deck construction management team of Babica, Brian Schiber, the assistant public works director/city engineer; civil engineer Elton Orozco; and Mayor Kevin Burns will attend a meeting in Aurora on Tuesday to receive the award.

The branch also will be submitting Geneva’s parking deck project for award consideration at the APWA Chicago Chapter level.

The APWA is an international, educational and professional association of public and private agencies.

The Chicago chapter is made up of 1,500 members in five branches throughout the region.

The interview summaries show that after turning over Gliniewicz’s body and checking for a pulse, officers didn’t search the area until K-9 units arrived, which Covelli said was what officers would be expected to do in order to protect the scene.

Sgt. Dawn Deservi in an interview Sept. 23 said she did not believe the dogs were tracking anything in the first search conducted in the hours after Gliniewicz’s death.

More than two months later, on Nov. 3, investigators, joined by Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd, announced that Gliniewicz’s death was a carefully staged suicide.

Investigators said they analyzed roughly 6,500 pages of text messages and bank records they received weeks after the shooting, as well as forensic evidence, before coming to their conclusion.

Covelli said the interviews with the first responding officers were part of the victimology report, but couldn’t be the driving force in the investigation’s early days.

“It was information, you can see from different officers at the scene. You have to put it together with facts,” Covelli said.

“What they told us, in the end, it all fits in.”

FOX LAKE – Newly released documents containing interviews with first responding officers at the scene of Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz’s shooting death have renewed questions about when the staged homicide was first suspected as a suicide, but investigators who for weeks denied the suicide theory say the interviews were pieces in a complicated investi- Lt. The village of Fox Lake on Monday released 18 pages, in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, that contain summaries of interviews Lake County Major Task Force investigators conducted with the first responding officers. Obama’s simplest case for greater gun regulation BLOOMBERG VIEW Guns are dangerous. This simple fact deserves more prominence in the discussion of gun rights and gun regulation in the U.S. – a debate that is being rejoined (if not renewed) this week as President Barack Obama announces new efforts to reduce gun violence.

More than just the gun movement ignores the danger of firearms. It’s a wider cultural failing. In October, a 2-year-old in South Carolina found a revolver in the seat pocket of a car and shot his grandmother while they were riding. Last year, a 9-year-old girl lost control of the Uzi she was firing at an Arizona shooting range and shot her instructor dead.

About a third of U.S. households with children younger than 12 contain a gun. Every year between 2005 and 2012, according to one estimate, 110 children under the age of 15 were accidentally killed by a gun – most by other children or themselves.

Still, the heaviest toll of gun violence falls on adults; more than 30,000 Americans die and tens of thousands more are injured each year. The U.S. is not an outlier in crime in general. Americans are less likely to be victims of assault, for example, than citizens of other developed nations. The U.S. is merely an outlier – a gargantuan one – in its levels of gun violence.

This is a public safety problem. But it’s also a cultural problem, and should be addressed as such. Drunk driving was once perceived as a dangerous yet inevitable nuisance, albeit one with occasionally deadly consequences. It’s now widely regarded as antisocial, and sometimes criminal. Americans still drink plenty of alcohol. But they drink and drive far less than they used to.

Clear-eyed recognition of the inherent danger of firearms is necessary to draw attention to the ways in which they’re sold, stored and accessed, and by whom.

It would prompt social condemnation of parents who arm unstable children, or fail to safely and properly store guns in their homes. It would reinforce the call for universal background checks on gun purchases and for technologies such as trigger recognition that can reduce the risk of accidental injury or death. It would discourage the all-too-common habit of treating guns like toys.

The economist Herbert Stein once famously said, “If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.” Without changes to America’s gun culture and laws, there will be hundreds of thousands of pointless deaths and injuries in the years ahead. No civilized society can tolerate so much violence forever. It will be reduced only when society finally recognizes the danger – and then moves to address it.

To the Editor: On behalf of Batavia United Way, we wanted to say thank you to all who generously and kindly donated to the 12th annual Adopt A Family Program. Batavia United Way adopted 88 families, with an additional 20 families adopted by Batavia School District 101 staff.

Families are selected by Batavia School District counselors, social workers and administrators, based on need, and then Batavia United Way organizes sponsors to shop for them from wish lists provided by the kids or their parents.

As the executive director of Batavia United Way, I had the humbling privilege of reading every child’s wish list and then matching them to the enthusiastic and caring individuals, businesses, clubs and churches that would be shopping for them.

It was a whirlwind of activity, with a surplus of help. Chip In Batavia volunteers provided a bag of non-perishable supplies, in addition to a bag of fresh produce

The Batavia Woman’s Club filled more than 225 stockings; Batavia Women in Business, Batavia Youth Baseball and local companies provided checks and gift cards to fill any gaps, while the Batavia Lions Club donated funds and decorated Louise White Elementary for our festive drop-off night.

Everything was pulled together, figuratively tied with a bow, and tearful, overwhelmed and happy families picked up their gifts before the close of school for the holiday. Sponsors, the volunteers unloading trunks and even the adopted families waiting for their packages to arrive all munched on beautiful Christmas cookies baked by the staff of the Batavia Park District and friends. The collaboration, teamwork and

general community spirit was simply amazing.

At this point, gifts have been distributed. It is nice to reflect on and appreciate the incredible staff at District 101, in addition to our generous neighbors and community. The genuine concern and care for local families that are struggling was evident, as staff worked to help us help the families.

Louise White staff hosting our drop-off had an eternal “no worries, can do” attitude that inspired us all. We are so fortunate to have all of this support and kindness for our kids.

St. Charles East girls bowling continues improvement with win over Geneva

St. Charles East coach Tom Cole’s message was pretty simple at the beginning of the girls bowling season.

While the Saints have started making strides toward where Cole would like them to be at the end of the season, there is always room for improvement.

But that comes during practice. As for Tuesday afternoon’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual with Geneva, the Saints were all smiles as they picked up a decisive win, 2,833-2,180, over the Vikings at Bowling Green Sports Center.

“We’re still trying to get some of those basics down,” Cole said. “Things like picking up spares and lining up your targets. With the level we’re at, we still need to critique a lot of those things, but it’s certainly coming along.”

One girl that Cole is certainly not worried about coming along is junior Emma Vitallo. Her 588 series was 100 pins more than the next closest bowler on either team Tuesday afternoon. She set the tone for her strong day with an opening game of 242 – one of her higher games of the season.

Joining Vitallo with a strong score in the opening game of her day was Christa Ruff, with a 200, leading to her 444 series.

Although Vitallo is in the Saints girls bowling program for her third year, the junior can’t remember a team that she’s had more fun being a part of.

“I’m just really proud to be on this team this year,” Vitallo said. “Not that I wasn’t in past years, but I cannot remember

Leading the way for Geneva was Maddie Voss with a 431 series and a high game of 148.

The Vikings struggled to find consistent games for most of the afternoon as junior Emma Johlie was the only other Geneva bowler with a plus-400 series (406).

Both Cole and Geneva coach Lisa Meister would like that famed bowling word of “consistency” to improve with their teams, though Cole does feel he has seen progression since the season started.

“So far this year, the girls have improved their average by 20 pins each,” Cole said.

“It’s good, but there is still room for improvement. The girls are starting to come to the reality that spares can win these matches. I did tell them to just bowl at the begin-

ning, but I like that now they are coming up to me and asking questions such as ‘Where should I stand’ or ‘What do I do here to pick up this spare?’ It shows they’re willing to learn and get better.”

Vitallo and her fellow captain, senior Abby McSkimming, were the top two series for the Saints.

McSkimming added a 487 series, which was the closest score to Vitallo.

Although she was happy with the overall team result

and her 588 series, Vitallo said the Saints know what the overall season goal is and will not let a big win like Tuesday’s get to their heads.

“We’ll definitely take this with a grain of salt,” Vitallo said. “We just have to keep plugging along and getting better. We’ve seen glimpses of how good we can be when we’re consistent. I don’t think it comes with bowling every single day, but definitely tons of practice and staying patient.”

Though 15 games, St. Charles East holds an overall rebounding advantage on opponents, boasts more assists and has made the same rate of shots from beyond the arc, 24 percent.

Still, the Saints stand just 6-9 entering the second half of the season, although a self-subscribed remedy appears to be on the way.

“I think that we’re really working together more than in past games. … We look to everyone on the court,” senior forward Hannah Vitkus said. “Even on offensive rebounds, we don’t just go up with it. We look for outside people and looked for the shots and then rebounded again if we have to.”

The Saints are getting the scoring balance coach Lori Drumtra foresaw, with sophomore Sara Rosenfeldt leading the way while Vitkus and guard Sam Munroe offer secondary options.

East still would like to see additional equilibrium. The team has outscored opponents by 55 points in the second and third quarters, but trails opponents by 38 points in the first and fourth quarters.

Rosenfeldt has a pulse on a way the Saints can improve.

“Rebounding and good defense, and talking,” she said.

“And then our point guards really push the ball and help us run the floor.”

He’s excited about the team’s intensity and progress, to be sure, but also is cognizant of its next gear.

Bailey Crimmins, who had dealt with a balky ankle, is working back to form while other teammates also return to health.

“We feel like we’re playing pretty well right now,” Colombe said. “We still

feel like we can get better.

We haven’t had everybody healthy yet. We’ve had some kids dealing with some minor stuff. … There’s some things we think we can do better, but that’s how you always feel. But pretty happy with where we’re at.”

BURLINGTON – In one eight-minute quarter Tuesday, Burlington Central reminded any challengers that they are still very much the dominant force in the Big Northern Conference East Division.

For the first two quarters, Johnsburg looked intent on hanging around. Then the Rockets came out of the break and outscored the Skyhawks 24-4 in the third quarter to pull away and eventually win 64-37 in BNC East action.

“That was a third quarter for the ages,” Burlington Central coach Mark Smith said. “I thought we turned the screws up defensively.

We knew we were going to have a test but the girls, the five seniors especially, are really determined. They haven’t lost a conference game in three years. Johnsburg is right there with us in the conference so I thought we made quite a statement tonight, very impressive.”

Sam Pryor led the Rockets (12-1, 4-0 BNC East) with 18 points while Kayla Ross and Shelby Holt added 16 apiece.

Burlington Central held Johnsburg scoreless for the first 7:11 of the third quarter until a free throw by Cortland Sommerfeldt snapped the 24-0 run.

They ended the quarter up 51-24, outscoring Johnsburg 24-4 in the period.

“We played OK and we were down seven to one of the best teams in the state, I was pretty excited at halftime,” Johnsburg coach Brad Frey said. “And then holy cow, they came out and just punched us in the mouth and you know, they’re really good.”

Johnsburg came in with just one loss and seen as potentially the biggest conference challenger to Burlington Central.

The Rockets have won 42 consecutive BNC East games.

Burlington Central’s defense stifled the Skyhawks (15-2, 3-1), who didn’t have a scorer reach double digits.

“Since my seventh grade, us five seniors have been undefeated in conference, so our goal this year was to not lose a conference game,” Ross said. “I think this was our toughest game in conference so I think we’re good and we should win against them next time too, hopefully come out like this. … We do not want to lose a conference game, that’s one of our biggest goals.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North senior Morgan Rosencrants etched her name into the record books Tuesday and she was the last one to know about it.

Rosencrants became the third player in North’s history to eclipse 1,000 career points after she banked in a layup in the third quarter of a 58-39 victory over CaryGrove (4-14). North’s coaches had kept the milestone a secret from the senior in order to keep her focused.

“We didn’t want her thinking about it,” North head coach Sean Masoncup said.

“Huge accomplishment. I was happy for her. She’s a great player and it shows how great of a player she is. I’m really proud of her.”

Rosencrants, who had 15 points and seven rebounds for the game, joined Kelsey Smith and Nichole Davidson as the three North Stars (11-3) to reach 1,000 points for their careers.

After scoring 10 of the team’s first 14 points in the first quarter and 13 in the first half, Masoncup knew the senior was just two points away from the record at halftime.

Coming out of the break, Masoncup drew up a play to counter the Trojan’s 2-1-2 zone and Rosencrants broke wide open diving down the lane for a layup and a place in history.

“We ran something right away. The first time, we made up a brand new play against their zone, and the second time down we ran it correctly and got a layup out of it,” Masoncup said. “We might start

using it from now on because we got a wide-open layup out of it.”

Play stopped as North’s bench mobbed the senior and the home crowd acknowledged the accomplishment with a standing ovation.

“I had no idea about it,” Rosencrants said. “I thought the ref had called a foul, and it was an and-one, so that’s why everyone was excited but then, my team told me.”

The Stars went on a 14-3 run at the end of the first quarter to blow a three-point lead into a 14-point advantage.

North’s Kyla Helsel drained a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter alone to help St. Charles balloon its lead into double digits, capping off the barrage with a 3-ball that swirled around the entire rim twice before finally dropping as the buzzer sounded to end the first.

After allowing 14 points in the first quarter, North’s defense stiffened and allowed only 15 points in the second and third quarters, combined.

“We went out on their shooters but then they started sending people backdoor so we packed it in a little bit to help out Claire [Jakaitis] in the middle so she wasn’t alone there,” Rosencrants said.

While the North Stars were happy to tip off 2016 with a win, Tuesday’s game will have a place in the North record books as Rosencrants joins some elite company.

“It feels good, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Rosencrants said. “It means a lot to know I have such good teammates to get me the ball. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars have officially announced its field staff for the 2016 season, which kicks off April 7.

Mike Benjamin headlines that group and becomes the 17th manager in franchise history.

Previously the manager of the 2015 AZL Diamondbacks (Rookie League) – compiling a 25-30 record – Benjamin also played a 13-year career in the Major Leagues with the San Francisco Giants (1989-95), Philadelphia Phillies (1996), Boston Red Sox (1997-98) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1999-2000, ’02) as an infielder.

Mark Grudzielanek, who served as the Cougars manager in 2015, has been named Assistant Hitting Coordinator in the Diamondbacks farm system.

Since you are avoiding the foods mentioned above, you may want to eat more of these foods, to compensate: • DAIRY: lactose-free milk; rice, almond and coconut milk; lactose-free yogurt; hard cheeses.

• FRUIT: bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, grapefruit, honeydew, kiwi, lemon, lime, oranges and strawberries.

• VEGETABLES: bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, bok choy, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, ginger, lettuce, olives, parsnips, potatoes, spring onions and turnips.

• PROTEIN: beef, pork, chicken, fish, eggs and tofu.

• NUTS/SEEDS: almonds, macadamia nuts, peanuts, pine nuts and walnuts.

Don’t misunderstand me: People are different, including people with IBS. Not all of the foods I advise you to eat less of will negatively affect your IBS. Some will, some won’t. And some that will make your symptoms worse will not do so for another person with IBS. Likewise, eating only the foods I advise you to eat more of won’t guarantee you freedom from IBS. But they are a good place to start in reducing the symptoms of IBS. You need to limit only those foods that you know are problematic for you.

And if you’re not sure about some, try what’s called an elimination diet. That involves removing all foods from the “eat less” list from your diet, and then reintroducing one food at a time, noting whether it worsens your symptoms. If not, add it back to your diet. The IBS diet really can help you.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and dating a guy who is 21. We’ve been together for over a year, and I really like him a lot. Mario is a great guy.

He doesn’t take drugs or smoke cigarettes, but he does drink.

He usually can limit the amount of alcohol he drinks, but sometimes I’m with him when he drives his car after a few too many drinks.

I’ve been telling him that he should not drive when he has been drinking, but he thinks I’m nagging him and that he has no trouble driving after drinking.

And he reminds me that he has never had an accident after he’s been drinking.

She was coming home after attending an evening college class. It was about 10:30 p.m. when my friend and her friend decided to pull into a fast-food restaurant to get a snack.

As she stopped to wait for a car in the opposite lane to pass, her automobile was struck from the rear by a car driven by a lady who was so drunk she didn’t even apply her brakes.

My friend was dead on arrival at a local hospital and her friend suffered multiple broken bones.

The woman who caused the accident told authorities that she had consumed nine

or 10 drinks in two hours at a friend’s birthday party. She was so drunk that she never saw my friend’s car.

She’d been trying to light a cigarette with her car cigarette lighter.

My friend was a beautiful, caring and happy friend who wanted to teach young children.

One moment she was a vibrant, healthy, intelligent human being, the next, she was a lifeless, crumpled body – all because someone decided to get totally smashed drunk and then decided to get behind the wheel of a 4,000-pound vehicle and to drive it without control of her mind.

In the twinkling of an eye, I lost my friend forever and ever.

This void will never leave me, nor will it leave her parents, sisters and brothers and her many other friends.

All this sorrow and grief was because of one drunk driver.

I hope my painful message will encourage your teen readers to never drink and drive and never ride with a driver who has been drinking.

Dear Dr. K: I have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and I hear there is a diet to help that. Can you tell me about it?

Dear Reader: Unfortunately, IBS is pretty common.

Symptoms include cramping, diarrhea, gas and bloating. But you are right: Research has identified certain foods that tend to trigger IBS, and avoiding these foods can help you reduce your symptoms.

The new diet for IBS targets and eliminates certain types of carbohydrates that the small intestine has trouble absorbing. We’ll call it the “IBS diet,” even though its official name is the “low FODMAP diet.” (Please don’t ask what “FODMAP” stands for; you don’t want to know, and I don’t want to try to remember.)

Research has found that certain carbohydrates increase the amount of fluid in the bowel and create more gas. This leads to bloating and changes the speed at which food is digested. The result is gas, pain and diarrhea. Avoiding these foods reduces IBS symptoms in most people with IBS. These are the foods to avoid: • DAIRY: cow’s milk, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, cottage cheese and ricotta cheese.

• FRUITS: apples, apricots, blackberries, cherries, nectarines, pears, peaches, cherries, mangoes and watermelon.

• VEGETABLES: artichokes, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, beetroot, cauliflower, garlic, mushrooms, onions and snow peas.

• GRAINS: wheat, rye.

• LEGUMES: chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and soy products.

• HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. • SWEETENERS such as honey, agave nectar, sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol and isomalt found in sugar-free gum and mints.

It wasn’t until after the death of recording artist Karen Carpenter that media attention focused on how serious and life-threatening an eating disorder could be. Dear Abby: At the age of 15 I was raped by my first boyfriend. It’s how I lost my virginity. Shortly afterward, I became severely depressed and bulimic. I blocked my trauma until 11 years later, when I had a flashback. I sought out a therapist and have been seeing him for the past six months.

I feel so much resentment and anger toward my family for not having helped me through this difficult time.

They didn’t know about the rape, but they knew about my eating disorder, and I’m sure they must have noticed my depressed mood. They simply looked the other way, and I was offered no help whatsoever.

I am angry with my mother especially, because she has always been detached and critical of me. I’m afraid to tell her what happened for fear of being blamed. She has now been diagnosed with cancer, and I’m afraid she’ll die before I get the courage to tell her. What can I do? – Angry
