Sheriff introduces leadership team

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Donald Kramer on Monday swore in former Geneva police officer Eddie Jackson, the first employee Kramer has sworn in as Kane County sheriff.

“Congratulations and welcome to Kane County,” Kramer told Jackson during a news conference in the lobby of the sheriff’s office.

Kramer held the conference – the first since he took office last month – to introduce the members of his four-person leadership team.

Each person has a different focus, Kramer said.

Jackson, who served as Geneva’s crime prevention officer for many years, will serve as director of court security, Kramer said. He said Jackson’s knowledge in security should help identify weaknesses at the county’s court facilities.

Gengler briefly served as former Sheriff Pat Perez’s undersheriff. In his new role, Kramer said, public safety won’t be among Gengler’s

responsibilities, but he will continue his role as public information officer.

“He’s got a full-time job,” Kramer said, noting the office has more than 300 employees, is always hiring and conducts background checks.

Other organizational changes include scheduling lieutenants on all three shifts

– days, evenings and midnights, Kramer said.

The lieutenants were assigned by seniority, Kramer said, noting those he ran against in the race for sheriff – Lt. Kevin Williams and Lt. Willie Mayes – have been assigned to days. The sheriff said he also is letting them implement some ideas they had.

Going forward, Kramer said he intends to address a union contract with the correctional center and hopes to talk with every employee – if only for five minutes – within the next 60 days. He wants to see if they’re happy and what their aspirations are, he said.

He said communication with employees is important.

“I want to settle the problems before they become a grievance,” Kramer said.

The sheriff expects he will end his first year at or under budget. He noted he has cut back on a few positions, including a grant writer and an administrative assistant, but he is seeking a finance director.

‘A lot of drama’ to play out in Campton Hills

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills Village President is seeking to remove Trustee Al Lenkaitis Jr. and replace him at a special meeting today, asserting that he moved out of the village.

According to the agenda, Village President Patsy Smith again seeks to assert her right not to reappoint Police Chief Daniel Hoffman and appoint Sgt. Bob Reichardt as chief instead.

The agenda also gives notice of Smith’s planned vetoes of previous Village Board actions to extend Hoffman’s contract to May, to return Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen from leave and to stop her from hiring an assistant.

The board previously acted

on these issues over Smith’s objections. Hoffman and Johnsen said they would not comment.

The meeting is at the Campton Township Community Center, 5N082 Old Lafox Road.

It starts at 6:30 p.m.

Lenkaitis said he is working in Eldorado, participates in meetings via telephone and has not moved.

“I still have a house in Campton Hills,” Lenkaitis said. “I am still a registered voter, and I am still an elected official.”

As to a future move, Lenkaitis said he is “thinking about it” and if things work out in Eldorado, then he and the family would move.

“Ask the president who she delivered the packet to on Saturday,” Lenkaitis said. “She hand-delivered it to me at my

house in Campton Hills.”

Smith, however, insisted Lenkaitis no longer is a resident at a house on the 6N300 block of Fair Oaks Drive and cannot continue to serve as a trustee.

“He moved out of town,” Smith said of Lenkaitis.

“When I was there Saturday, there was a moving van.”

Trustee Laura Andersen said Smith does not have the authority to determine whether someone is not a resident.

“We have asked Al, and he is still a resident,” Andersen said. “He is working there, in [Eldorado] but not living there.”

The trustees scheduled another special meeting to follow, at 7 p.m., directing Smith to give Johnsen access to village facilities, computer network, email and other files

and software. The board previously acted on this as well, returning Johnsen to work.

Andersen said Johnsen’s passwords were disabled and she still does not have access to the server or her emails.

As to Johnsen’s ability to hire an assistant, Andersen said hiring one full-time person with benefits has brought in 60 applicants.

“It’s a sad state of affairs,” Andersen said. “We’re trying to see that the right thing is done.”

Smith said state law gives her the right to veto anything that financially obligates the village – such as another fulltime employee.

“I’m trying to make sure they are following the law,” Smith said. “It’s just drama.

It’s just a lot of drama, unnecessary drama.”

Three Kaneland hopefuls face candidacy objections

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Electoral Board will hear testimony regarding 12 objections to the nominating petitions of three candidates for Kaneland District 302 School Board in the April 7 consolidated election and one regarding a candidate for the Elgin U46 school board.

The board will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at 719 S. Batavia Ave., in the conference room of the Kane County Clerk’s Office, Building B, Geneva.

The three-member electoral board consists of Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and Kane County Circuit Clerk Thomas Hartwell, or their designees. The meeting is open to the public.

The first hearing is set for

10 a.m. for an objection to the nominating petitions of Brian Sauvageau for the Elgin district. The rest are set in 15-minute increments from 10:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. to hear objections to Kaneland hopefuls Jerry Elliott and Dan Nagel of Sugar Grove Township and incumbent Tony Valente of Sugar Grove.

Valente often has been critical of the district’s spending and voted against a tax levy increase. Elliott is a frequent filer of Freedom of Information Act requests and also a critic of the district’s finances. Nagel regularly attends Kaneland school board meetings.

Elliott said he was taken by surprise at the objections “I think it’s really quite wild,” Elliott said of the objections. “I’m going to stay a candidate and defend myself.

I think I have good grounds, too.”

If he is removed, Elliott said he might run as a write-in candidate.

Objectors are Gale Pavlak and Lynn McHenry of Elburn, and Peter Lopatin and Teresa Witt of Sugar Grove. Pavlak, Lopatin and Witt are seeking re-election to the board.

McHenry is a social sciences teacher at Kaneland High School, the chief negotiator for the Kaneland Education Association and her signature also appears on one of Witt’s nominating petitions.

The first three hearings are for objector Pavlak starting at 10:15 a.m.; the second three for McHenry, starting at 11 a.m.; the third for Lopatin begins at 12:30 p.m.; and the fourth for Witt begins at 1:15 p.m.

Witt and McHenry said they objected to the candidates because they used the wrong form for their nominating petitions. Witt and McHenry said

the correct form for signatures was P-7 and Elliott, Valente and Nagel used P-7A. “Clearly, proper procedure was not followed,” McHenry said.

“They used a form that is only used by seven school districts in the state and we are not one of them,” Witt said.

“The problem using that form is that it does not include the township you live in. When circulating the petitions, those who signed in order to nominate were not aware of the township. There is a limit for how many from one township can serve on the Kaneland school board.”

Witt said with Kaneland being a large district of 149 square miles covering nine townships in Kane County and a small area in DeKalb County, it is important that no more than three school board members can be from any one township.

“This prevents a quorum from any one township that would have the interests of Sugar Grove over Elburn to dominate the board,” Witt said. “We want a sampling from many townships.”

Witt said she did not think there would be repercussions from voters if the three are removed from the ballot.

“It’s nerve-wracking to fill out the paperwork to run for election. It can be very stressful dotting all the I’s and crossing all the T’s,” Witt said. “The majority of people go through that due diligence and come up with the right forms. It does not seem right that three people would turn in wrong stuff and still be considered for election without having done all they have to do.”

The others running for the Kaneland board are Ryan Kerry of Elburn and Pamela Voorhees of Maple Park.

‘THIS IS THEIR ENTIRE WORLD’ Haley’s Playground providing play, therapy for kids with disabilities

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Xander McKenna, 4, had a wide smile on his face as he played around in the bouncy house during a recent trip to Haley’s Playground.

“He is always on the move,” said his mother, Desiree McKenna, of Oswego.

But it’s not just play for Xander, who was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old and still doesn’t talk. McKenna said such activity helps him with his perception skills.

“He can’t tell where his body is,” she said. “Even though he has really good balance, he can’t tell where his body is. He needs this in order for his body to feel normal.”

North Aurora resident Jackie Olson founded Haley’s Playground in 2011 to be a safe place for children and adults with disabilities to play and learn. Haley’s Playground Inc. is a nonprofit organization named after Olson’s 9-year-old daughter, Haley, who has autism.

The program had been at the village-owned North Aurora Activity Center in North Aurora, but Olson was forced to find a new home for Haley’s Playground when the building closed in March because of structural damage.

Since April, Haley’s Playground has been at the Association of Individual Development’s Keeler Center at 409 New Indian Trail Court, Aurora. AID provides services to individuals who have developmental, physical and/or mental disabilities.

Olson said it’s been a blessing.

“The kids get services on the weekends, and the adults from the AID program get to use it during the week,” Olson said. “We have learned to work closer together so we can provide more services for

Haley’s Playground offers programs on Saturday mornings. Upcoming classes will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday and Jan. 24.

Olson is an occupational therapist. She tries to make sure those in the program have plenty of sensory experiences. For example, nonverbal students can use a microphone connected to a sound system to improve their communication skills.

“A lot of these kids are nonverbal or say very few words,” Olson said. “It helps with their communication.”

Olson said she knows autistic children can get overstimulated. For those occasions, Haley’s Playground also offers a darkened tent

that kids who are overstimulated can crawl in and regulate their bodies, she said.

In addition, participants are paired with their peers who don’t have developmental disabilities.

“They are with other kids who want to teach them and learn about them,” Olson said.

That was the case recently when McKenna’s 6-yearold daughter, Sydney, who doesn’t have developmental disabilities, was paired with an autistic child.

“They get to learn about other kids,” Olson said. “Not all autistic kids are the same.

My son is a thrill-seeker. He wants scary movies and roller coasters. A lot of autistic kids are the exact opposite.”

Haley’s Playground operates with the help of volunteers, such as Brennan Hare, 15, an Aurora Central Catholic High School student. He has been a volunteer since Olson first started Haley’s Playground.

Hare said he is happy to help give participants in the program the help they need.

“I can’t imagine what it means to these kids,” he said.

“To them, this is their entire

world.”

McKenna said she enjoys the opportunity to network with other parents, as well as giving her a little break.

“I can kind of relax for a moment, which doesn’t seem like a big deal, but my son doesn’t sleep through the night,” McKenna said. “It’s been a month since he slept through the night, so giving me an hour break is huge.”

Because she already is running out of room at the Keeler Center, Olson said she plans to open a second location on West Galena Boulevard in Aurora.

--“Vernacular Tobacco Cabinet” was the name of this piece in a Nov. 2014 Garth’s auction. It doesn’t seem to be made by a skilled cabinetmaker. Although it looks like two pieces, the back construction shows that it was made to be one piece - a fitted cabinet at the bottom behind the ad and an empty space behind the mirrored door. Few collectors know how it was used. The cabinet is a little over 5 feet high. The ad of Old Judge Cigarettes identifies the probable maker, Goodwin & Co., an American tobacco manufacturer from New York City working before the Civil War. Old Judge was one of its brands. The company merged with others and became part of the American Tobacco Co. Collectors today like their tobacco cards picturing baseball players; one set called “Old Judge,” issued in 1887-1890, was 1 7/16 by 2 1/2 inches. A larger set, called “Old Judge Cabinets,” issued from 1888 to 1889, was 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches. The mirrored section of the wooden cabinet seems to be missing some sort of shelf or racks, probably pipe racks. The lower part has cubby holes, drawers and partitions that may have held loose tobacco, a mixing bowl, humidor, pipe cleaners and cards. The ad, showing a convict held in the stocks, dates from about 1900. An unusual piece, it sold for $780. *** Q: I inherited my mother’s black Catalin Mah Jong set, which she got in the 1940s. Some of the paint has worn off some of the Jokers and

Flowers. What is it worth, and how can I sell it?

A: Mah Jong originated in China, and early sets imported into the U.S. had ivory, bone or bamboo tiles.

Catalin, a polymer developed in the 1930s, has the look of ivory at a lower price. Sets made in the 1920s and ‘30s didn’t include jokers. Sets made since 1971 include eight jokers and eight flowers. Collectors want sets that have the full set of tiles, in good condition; you can’t buy single tiles to replace lost ones. The backs won’t match. Mah Jong sets often sell online. The value of your set is reduced a little because of the missing paint.

A full set in a box sells for $200$250. *** Q: I have a blue-and-white plate with a picture of Paul Revere on it and a border of fruit and flowers. I found it in an old steamer trunk in my grandmother’s attic. I’m over 80 years old, so I think the plate was made about 1800. The back of the plate reads “Ride of Paul Revere Apr. 18, 1775. Staffordshire, England,” and it’s marked “RM CO.” in a diamond shape. How old is it, and what is it worth?

A: This mark was used by Rowland & Marsellus, an importer in business in New York City from 1893 to about 1937. Several factories in Staffordshire, England, made historical blue souvenir plates and other chinaware decorated with American scenes.

Historical scenes, important buildings, landmarks, cities and colleges were transfer-printed onto the china.

Plates with rolled edges are the most wanted. Rowland & Marsellus used a diamond-shape mark from about 1893 to 1900. Your rolled-edge plate is worth about $55.

Look at the tree trunk pictured above. Some of the rings are wide and some of them are thin. A wide ring tells us that this was a good year for growing.

There was the right amount of water and sunlight. Drought causes slower growth and narrow rings. Dark spots tell us that the tree survived a fire that year.

By reading the rings of trees, dendrochronologists can read the story of our planet, stories that reside in living trees and in logs used to build ancient buildings. Tree rings have told of weather patterns that lead to severe fires. They have revealed century-long droughts, insect plagues and times of volcanic eruptions.

WILLIAM F. RADECKY Born: Sept. 1, 1926 Died: Dec. 29, 2014 William F. Radecky, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, formerly of Geneva, died peacefully on December 29, 2014, surrounded by his family, from complications of prostate cancer, and quietly entered Heaven.

Bill and his wife Irene were lifelong residents of Geneva, prior to moving to Grand Rapids in 2009, where they have resided at the Breton Ridge campus of Holland Home. For fourty years, they owned Tri- City Builders in Geneva; he was known for his honesty, integrity, and meticulous attention to detail in home remodeling and custom built homes.

Bill was a lifelong member of the Geneva Lutheran Church and active with the Lions Club and Boy Scouts.

He was an avid skier for much of his life, enjoyed golf and was a member of the Geneva Country Club.

Irene and Bill were blessed by many long friendships and enjoyed sharing their vacation homes at Crystal Lake, Michigan and Vero Beach, Florida with family and friends. Bill always had a kind word or humorous story to tell and will be greatly missed by his family for whom he was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend.

Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene; as well as a sister, Betty Thomas; son, William Jr.; and daughter, Susan (David) Oviatt; 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

At his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at the Breton Ridge campus of Holland Home at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, January 9, 2015.

Deborah Drallmeier, 20, of Geneva was doing a punishing abdominal workout on a slant board. Every time she came up, Anthony McCoy, 22, of DeKalb would throw her a ball.

Drallmeier said she would do four sets of 20.

McCoy said he works as a promoter for the company sponsoring the worldwide workout.

Drallmeier said she started working out intensely about a year ago to prepare for boot camp when she joins the Air Force.

“I think this will make boot camp a little easier,” Drallmeier said.

Water main to be replaced by fall

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday took two votes related to the city’s Fifth Avenue water main replacement project scheduled for this year.

Council members voted 9-0 on two items – one in favor of approving a notice of intent to award the project to Martam Construction for about $2.6 million, and the other to award project construction engineering services to Trotter & Associates for $234,000.

Ward 1 Alderman Ron Silkaitis was absent Monday

from the council’s regular meeting.

The project is scheduled to begin in April and be completed sometime in September, according to the city’s executive summary of the notice of intent. The project’s groundbreaking cannot happen until after April 15, said John Lamb, the city’s environmental services manager.

“We’re looking forward to getting this thing started,” St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina said after the votes.

The water main will be constructed on North Fifth Avenue, or Route 25, between North Avenue in St.

Charles and Q Center, 1405 N. 5th Ave. in St. Charles, Lamb said.

The budgeted amount for the project is $2.4 million and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency loan approval for the project is about $2.99 million, according to the executive summary.

As part of the agency’s loan program process, the city will submit the notice of intent along with the bid packet to the agency for review. Once the review is completed and the documents are returned, a notice of award will be issued, the summary states.

N. Aurora takes step toward possible dam removal

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – North Aurora village trustees Monday took another step toward the possible removal of the dam near North Aurora Village Hall as they approved an intergovernmental agreement between the village, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Fox Valley Park District.

“It sets up the guidelines for all three entities working together,” North Aurora Village Administrator Steve Bosco told village trustees at Monday’s North Aurora Village Board meeting.

The dam removal project is broken into two phases.

The first phase is for design engineering and the second phase is for the dam’s demolition.

As proposed, the IDNR would provide up to $500,000 in funding for the project’s design engineering. IDNR has allocated $2.5 million toward the dam’s demolition.

The IDNR has stated its intent to remove dams to improve water quality, aquatic habitat and recreational safety. Village Trustee Laura Curtis was the sole trustee to vote against the agreement.

Curtis said the money could be put to better use in

other projects, such as burying the power lines along Route 31.

“We have a beautiful riverfront,” she said. “This is something that isn’t broke.

Why should we fix it?”

Village trustee Chris Faber said the state is not offering the village $3 million to bury the power lines. North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said the agreement isn’t committing the village to demolishing the dam.

“This is the first step,” he said.

The dam in North Aurora is owned by the IDNR and maintained by the Fox Valley Park District.

ELBURN – Muscles were pumping and sweat was flying Saturday at Pound 4 Pound Fitness in Elburn as the gym participated in an effort to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous group workout.

The effort was being sponsored by ViSalus, a health and fitness company. For every person who participates, ViSalus will donate 30 meals to children in need through its charity, Project 10 Kids, said Danny DeKing, co-owner of the fitness center with Ryan Darby.

“We’re going for a Guiness World Record for the largest simultaneous group workout,” DeKing said. “It’s worldwide at 2,000 different locations.”

Everyone who signed in during that hour Saturday got to work out for free, and each signature on the sign-in sheet meant 30 meals for a child struggling with malnutrition, DeKing said.

Their participation is an opportunity not only to raise awareness about proper nutrition for children, exercise and fitness, DeKing said, but to draw attention to adult obesity challenges in the U.S. His father, Chet DeKing, 57, of Sugar Grove participated because he wanted to be part of the effort to get nourishing food to hungry chil-

More snow on way for area

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Dave Rosenberg of St. Charles and his daughters, Ava, 10, and Abigail, 10, said they had been disappointed that this winter season had not produced much snow.

So after the inch or so of snow that fell on Kane County over the weekend, they were at Langum Park in St. Charles to take in some sledding fun Sunday.

“We were very anxious to get out,” Rosenberg said.

“We’re a little surprised there hasn’t been much snow this season.”

According to the National Weather Service, St. Charles received 1.3 inches of snow from the storm. Batavia received about 1 inch of snow and Geneva received 1.4 inches.

And more snow is on the way. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Kane County that started at 6 p.m. Monday. The area could see another 2 to 4 inches of snow.

Cold is in the forecast for the next several days. The

high temperature Wednesday – which is expected to be the coldest day of the week – is forecast to be zero, according to the National Weather Service. Wind chills that day are expected to be between 20 and 30 below zero.

Even though Sunday’s storm didn’t produce a lot of snow, it was good enough for Matt Wifler of West Chicago and his 6-year-old daughter, Elli, who were at Langum Park.

“It’s pretty good for sledding,” Matt Wifler said. “It’s enough to make it slippery.”

Police seek suspects in tobacco store theft

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two men robbed a tobacco store in St. Charles with a gun and a knife Sunday afternoon, according to a news release issued Monday from St. Charles police.

Police at 6:27 p.m. Sunday were called to the Tobacco and Gift Store, 1556 E. Main St., St. Charles, right after the robbery occurred, according to the release.

Two men – one armed with a handgun, the other armed with a knife – approached the display case and removed two items from the case, the

release states. The men also demanded the store owner’s phone, said Lisa Blackwell, St. Charles police spokeswoman.

The two men then ran from the business through the rear entrance on foot with the phone and two items from the display case, according to the release. No one was injured during the robbery. Police did not find the men after checking the area, the release states.

The two suspects are described as white and white or Hispanic.

The white suspect is in his early 20s, 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches with blond hair and wearing a black/gray

Mexican blanket-style poncho and multicolored bandana. He was armed with a handgun, according to the release.

Blackwell said police continue to investigate the incident and as of Monday afternoon, no other updates were available.

STC police share holiday traffic campaign results KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles police traffic safety campaign netted one driving-under-the-influence arrest and four citations for various violations, the department announced Monday in a news release.

The traffic campaign was completed during an enforcement period from Dec. 19 through Sunday, in cooperation with – and funded by – the Illinois Department of Transportation, the release said. It was part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

According to the release, the four citations consisted of the following: two citations for driving without insurance, one for speeding and one for an unspecified violation.

St. Charles police also gave nine warnings for other violations, the release said.

During a previous traffic safety campaign that coincided with the Thanksgiving holiday, St. Charles police reported six DUI arrests, two drug arrests and 22 citations for various violations.

The police department advises residents to drive carefully and keep impaired motorists off city streets.

Upgrade to Supreme Court long overdue THE WASHINGTON POST “On November 10, 1893, The Washington Post identified an emerging technology that was reshaping American society: Pneumatics!”

This is how Chief Justice John Roberts began his 2014 Year-End Report on the Federal Judiciary, in which he announced a long-overdue move to put court documents online. But he stopped well short of embracing other obvious improvements, such as live video or audio from the Supreme Court chamber.

“The courts will always be prudent whenever it comes to embracing the ‘next big thing,’ ” he wrote.

Allow us to reclaim some

dignity. Sure, zipping documents around in metal tubes wasn’t the most important communication technology ever created, or even the most important created around that time. But audio and video broadcasting – on TV, radio and the Internet – is not the next big thing. It is a longbeen thing, an indispensable tool for connecting people with each other – and the government with the people.

We’ve thought the Supreme Court should allow cameras in its chamber for a long time. So have many judges who already work with cameras rolling.

The justices consider cases of national importance, the outcomes of which can affect

millions of Americans, and they do it with taxpayer money. Yet the court stands out in its refusal to ease access to and understanding of the public proceedings that it conducts.

The court doesn’t allow live video broadcasts and only sometimes makes exceptions for audio.

Typically, those interested in a full account of the day’s cases must read transcripts posted hours after oral arguments occur or wait for the court to release audiotapes at week’s end.

Critics of putting cameras in courtrooms say that broadcasts would turn otherwise-staid legal proceedings into circuses, with lawyers

and judges playing to the television audience rather than seriously sorting out tough legal questions. Yet the justices already keep lawyers under control, constantly cutting them off before they finish their sentences. Really, the justices would have to keep only themselves in check.

Critics also worry about disruptions from the observers in the chamber. But the rare disruptive audience member can be removed easily.

And critics fret about the personal security of justices who might become more recognizable. Yet the justices are public figures, whether they like it or not.

There are also risks to

keeping things the way they are. Reporters must read from transcripts stripped of crucial cues such as tone of voice and facial expression, which opens a wide opportunity for mistaken or deliberate misinterpretation.

That is, if journalists don’t just rely on the snippets that observers in the chamber share on Twitter, which often define the first impressions of what occurred.

One way or another, there will be real-time discussion of major court cases. For the sake of the public’s understanding of the legal process and the integrity of public debate, the court should do all it can to ensure that discussion is well-informed.

As 2014 closes, we can look back at many instances when an out-of-control federal government wasted billions of dollars that it took from the citizens, repeatedly deceived us about its activities and time and again trampled on the rights of citizens in this country.

I believe that people are finally seeing how things are going, thus the heavy voting for the Republican Party. The constitution has been twisted to give the federal government power far beyond anything the founders ever planned.

To sum it up, 2014 has been a very bad year for rights, freedoms and the U.S. constitution.

HICAGO – Inadvertently channeling his inner prep student section, Bulls radio announcer Chuck Swirsky lobbed a question to a few reporters late Saturday afternoon.

“Where is Kaneland?”

Swirsky asked, straightfaced and without the familiar chant-and-clap singsong often associated with that phrase.

For 32 minutes of clock time before that moment, the Kaneland and St. Charles North boys basketball teams basked in the exposure that accompanied playing at the United Center.

Swirsky’s query merely provided a topper as he prepared to broadcast the Bulls’ game against the Boston Celtics that night.

Even the adults involved in the high school production beamed.

“It’s still surreal,” North public address announcer Michael Smith said at halftime.

Well, to be technical, it really was a horn blaring, and the distance for which Callaghan had to compensate wasn’t what he was used to, either.

“A little bit longer halfcourt shot, isn’t it?” North Stars assistant Rob Prentiss grinned, leaning toward Callaghan as the second quarter started.

Yup, playing at the United Center offered its share of adjustments, but North ultimately proved more adept in a 70-43 victory against Kaneland in a boys basketball matinee.

“In the first quarter, especially, it takes some time to get used to the bigger surroundings,” Callaghan said.

“So you just have to keep your head up and keep playing basketball.”

North (9-6) overcame early struggles with finishing to shoot just shy of 50 percent in the first half, building a 36-17 lead at the break.

More than halfway through both his high school career and his bid to become a Batavia wrestling centurion, Michael Doranski still is finding his way with one particular experience.

“As the season goes on, you start to get into more of a leadership role,” Doranski said. “Everybody starts to get their place, and I’m starting to actually feel it this year as an upperclassman.”

As the Bulldogs approached the holiday break, Doranski admitted that reality took time to register.

“Yeah, it’s weird. I still feel like a freshman,” the junior 120-pounder said. “But, you know, I have over 50 wins on varsity already, so starting to get up there.”

Doranski collected two more victories in a home triangular Saturday, earning a decision against his McHenry foe before rolling to a 15-0 technical fall against Elgin.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 in Upstate Eight Conference River Division duals with the Elgin victory, and will aim to clinch a conference title in the next 10 days.

Batavia visits St. Charles North on Friday and hosts Geneva on Jan. 15.

Doranski’s brother, Dylan, has license to feel like a freshman, largely because he is.

The brothers limit their work to 30- to 60-minute sessions because they compete or train six days a week.

Puzzling bladder condition is helped by several therapies Dear Doctor K: I have interstitial cystitis. Medications have helped, but not much. What else could help relieve my symptoms?

Dear Reader: Interstitial cystitis is a puzzling bladder condition in which the bladder wall becomes irritated or inflamed. We don’t know what causes the condition.

Some doctors speculate that an infection, most likely with viruses, is responsible. However, I’m not aware of any good evidence in support of that.

The symptoms of interstitial cystitis are similar to those of a bacterial urinary tract infection.

However, in interstitial cystitis, there is no bacterial infection, and the symptoms do not respond to antibiotic treatment.

Symptoms include frequent urination, an intense urge to urinate and a burning sensation during urination. People may also experience pain, pressure or tenderness in the bladder area. In many patients, symptoms come and go.

In others, symptoms continue to get worse.

In some people, interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that lasts for many years. In others, it disappears suddenly. But symptoms may return again, even years after the first illness.

There is no therapy that cures the disorder, so the goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Often a person needs to try several therapies before finding the right combination: • Dietary changes. Caffeinated beverages, alcohol, chocolate, and spicy or high-acid foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes are some of many foods that can aggravate the condition. Each person needs to experiment to discover what she or he needs to avoid. Smoking aggravates interstitial cystitis in some people, and quitting smoking can also help.

• Bladder training. Patients can learn to reduce frequent urination by following a schedule for urinating. You can think of it as “willing” the bladder to urinate less often. It is the same kind of discipline that works in people who have overactive bladder, a condition much more common than interstitial cystitis. While bladder training cuts down on the frequent urination, unfortunately it doesn’t reduce the pain of urination.

• Oral medications. Pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron) is the only medication specifically approved for the treatment of interstitial cystitis. Other drugs not specifically approved for the

condition also may offer relief.

They include analgesics (pain relievers), tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines and H2 blockers used to treat heartburn.

• Bladder distention. Sterile water is used to stretch the bladder.

This may allow the bladder to hold more urine and interfere with pain signals transmitted by nerves in the bladder.

• Bladder instillation (bladder wash). The bladder is filled with a sterile solution containing one of a number of ingredients that work directly on the bladder wall to reduce inflammation and block pain. It may also prevent muscle contractions that cause pain, frequency and urgency of urination.

• Electrical nerve stimulation.

Mild electrical impulses are used to stimulate nerves to the bladder.

The electrical pulses may increase blood flow to the bladder, strengthen pelvic muscles or trigger the release of substances that block pain.

While these various treatments help many patients, we won’t have a sure-fire treatment for interstitial cystitis until research uncovers its cause.

This time, it was only minor damage and neither of us was injured, but it could have been much worse.

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that drivers using a handheld cellphone are four times more likely to be involved in an accident.

With over 100 million citizens having the luxury of using a cellphone, safety problems for drivers who use them while driving could become as serious as drinking and driving.

Many states and local communities have banned cellphone use while driving. I for one would be all for banning cellphone use by all motor vehicle drivers everywhere!

Francesco Petrarch, a 14th-century Italian poet, said, “A short cut to riches is to subtract from our desires.”

At the bridge table, a short cut – a short suit – will make you wealthier if – an important if – you have a fit with partner.

Look at today’s North hand. After partner opens one spade, what should North respond?

If you count shortage points, add three for a singleton when you have at least a nine-card fit. So, the North hand is worth 11 support points, which is ideal for a threespade limit raise.

If you count losers, the North hand has eight: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. (No suit has more than three losers.) Eight losers is also the number for a game-invitational limit raise.

Then South, who knows that his excellent diamond suit will provide discards, immediately uses Roman Key-Card Blackwood. North replies five hearts, showing two key-cards (two aces, or one ace and the trump king) and denying the trump queen. Now South knows that six spades is high enough.

West leads the club queen. What should declarer do?

The play ought to be straightforward. South should win with his club ace and draw two rounds of trumps. When they break 3-1, he turns to diamonds, discarding dummy’s last two clubs as quickly as possible. Declarer ruffs his fourth diamond in the dummy, cashes the heart ace, trumps a heart back to hand and ruffs his remaining club in the dummy. Then he can claim, his hand containing two trumps and a high diamond.

West takes only one trump trick.

The Redevelopment Project Area is generally bounded by 1st Street on the west, 3rd Avenue on the east, Indiana Street on the south and Main Street (west of Fox River) and Cedar Avenue (east of Fox River) on the north.

At the hearing, there will be considered the approval of the Redevelopment Plan and Project for and the designation of the proposed Redevelopment Project Area and adoption of tax increment allocation financing therefor. The proposed Redevelopment Plan and Project is on file and available for public inspection at the office of the City Clerk, City Charles City Hall, 2 East Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois. Pursuant to the Redevelopment Plan and Project the Village proposes to alleviate conservation area and blighted area conditions in the Redevelopment Project Area and to enhance the tax base of the City and the taxing districts having taxable property within the Redevelopment Project Area by utilizing tax increment financing to fund various eligible project costs to stimulate private investment within the Redevelopment Project Area. These eligible project costs may include, but may not be limited to, studies, surveys, professional fees, property assembly and rehabilitation costs, construction of public improvements and facilities, financing, administrative and other professional costs, all as authorized under the Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act, as amended. The Redevelopment Plan objectives include promoting and protecting the health, safety, morals and welfare of the public by establishing a public/private partnership, establishing economic growth, development and training in the City by working within the guidelines of the business attraction and retention strategies developed by the City, encouraging private investment while conforming with the City's comprehensive plan, restoring and enhancing the City's tax base, enhancing the value of the proposed Redevelopment Project Area, improving the environmental quality of the proposed Redevelopment Project Area, and retaining and attracting employment opportunities within the proposed Redevelopment Project Area. To achieve these objectives, the Redevelopment Plan proposes to provide assistance by paying or reimbursing costs related to the acquisition, construction and installation of public facilities, property assembly and rehabilitation, site preparation and improvement, job training and other eligible redevelopment project costs, the execution of one or more redevelopment agreements and the payment of financing, administrative and other professional costs.

Prior to the date of the hearing, each taxing district having property in the Redevelopment Project Area and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity may submit written comments to the City, to the attention of the City Clerk, 2 East Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois 60174.

There is hereby convened a joint review board to consider the proposed Redevelopment Plan and Project for and the designation of the proposed Redevelopment Project Area and the adoption of tax increment allocation financing therefor. The joint review board shall consist of a representative selected by each community college district, local elementary school district and high school district or each local community unit school district, park district, township, fire protection district and county that will have the authority to directly levy taxes on the property within the Redevelopment Project Area at the time that the Redevelopment Project Area is approved, a representative selected by the City, and a public member. The Redevelopment Project Area is generally bounded by South 3rd Street on the west, South 2nd Street on the east, Walnut Street on the south and Main Street on the north.

There will be considered at the hearing amendment of the Redevelopment Plan and Project for and the amendment of the Redevelopment Project Area and confirmation of tax increment allocation financing therefor. The amended Redevelopment Plan and Project is on file and available for public inspection at the office of the City Clerk, City Hall, 2 East Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois. Pursuant to the amended Redevelopment Plan and Project the City proposes to alleviate blighted area conditions in the amended Redevelopment Project Area and to enhance the tax base of the City and the taxing districts having taxable property within the Redevelopment Project Area by utilizing tax increment financing to fund various eligible project costs to stimulate private investment within the Redevelopment Project Area. These eligible project costs may include, but may not be limited to, studies, surveys, professional fees, property assembly costs, construction of public improvements and facilities, financing, administrative and other professional costs, all as authorized under the Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act, as amended. The Redevelopment Plan objectives include promoting and protecting the health, safety, morals and welfare of the public by establishing a public/private partnership, establishing economic growth, and development in the City, encouraging private investment while conforming with the City's comprehensive plan, restoring and enhancing the City's tax base, enhancing the value of the amended Redevelopment Project Area, improving the environmental quality of the amended Redevelopment Project Area, and retaining and attracting employment opportunities within the proposed Redevelopment Project Area. To achieve these objectives, the Redevelopment Plan proposes to provide assistance by paying or reimbursing costs related to the acquisition, construction and installation of public facilities, property assembly, site preparation and improvement, environmental remediation, job training and other eligible redevelopment project costs, the execution of one or more redevelopment agreements, and the payment of financing, administrative and other professional costs.

Prior to the date of the hearing, each taxing district having property in the Redevelopment Project Area and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity may submit written comments to the Village, to the attention of the City Clerk, City Hall, 2 East Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois 60174.

There is hereby convened a joint review board to consider the amended Redevelopment Plan and Project for and the designation of the proposed Redevelopment Project Area and the confirmation of tax increment allocation financing therefor. The joint review board shall consist of a representative selected by each community college district, local elementary school district and high school district or each local community unit school district, park district, library district, township, fire protection district and county that will have the authority to directly levy taxes on the property within the amended Redevelopment Project Area at the time that the amended Redevelopment Project Area is approved, a representative selected by the City, and a public member. The first meeting of said joint review board shall be held at 5:00 p.m. on the 16th day of December, 2014, at the City Hall, 2 East Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois.

At the hearing, all interested persons or affected taxing districts may file written objections with the City Clerk and may be heard orally with respect to any issues regarding the amendment of the Redevelopment Plan and Project for and the amendment of the Redevelopment Project Area and the confirmation of tax increment allocation financing therefor.
