District 302, Elgin U46 races potentially affected

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Electoral Board will hear testimony regarding 12 objections to the nominating petitions of three candidates for Kaneland District 302 School Board in the April 7 consolidated election and one regarding a candidate for the Elgin U46 school board.

The board will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at 719 S. Batavia Ave., in the conference room of the Kane County Clerk’s Office, Building B, Geneva.

The three-member electoral board consists of Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and Kane County Circuit Clerk Thomas Hartwell, or their designees. The meeting is open to the public.

The first hearing starts at 10 a.m. for Elgin district candidate Brian Sauvageau.

The rest are set in 15-minute increments from 10:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. for Kaneland hopefuls Jerry Elliott and Dan Nagel of Sugar Grove Township and incumbent Tony Valente of Sugar Grove. Valente often has been critical of the district’s spending and voted against a tax levy increase.

Elliott is a frequent filer of Freedom of Information Act requests and also a critic of the district’s finances. Nagel regularly attends Kaneland school board meetings.

Elliott said he was taken by surprise at the objections “I think it’s really quite wild,” Elliott said. “I’m going to stay a candidate and defend myself. I think I have good grounds, too.”

If he is removed, Elliott said he might run as a writein candidate.

Objectors are Gale Pavlak and Lynn McHenry of Elburn, and Peter Lopatin and Teresa Witt of Sugar Grove.

About the Kane County Electoral Board The Kane County Electoral Board will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday to hear objections to the nominating petitions of three candidates for District 302 and Elgin U46 school boards.

Pavlak, Lopatin and Witt are seeking re-election to the board. McHenry is a social sciences teacher at Kaneland High School, the chief negotiator for the Kaneland Education Association and her signature also appears on one of Witt’s nominating petitions.

The first three hearings are for objector Pavlak starting at 10:15 a.m.; the second three for McHenry, starting at 11 a.m.; the third for Lopatin begins at 12:30 p.m.; and the fourth for Witt begins at 1:15 p.m.

Witt and McHenry said they objected to the candidates because they used the

wrong form for their nominating petitions. Witt and McHenry said the correct form for signatures was P-7 and Elliott, Valente and Nagel used P-7A. “Clearly, proper procedure was not followed,” McHenry said.

“They used a form that is only used by seven school districts in the state and we are not one of them,” Witt said.

“The problem using that form is that it does not include the township you live in. When circulating the petitions, those who signed in order to nominate were not aware of the township. There is a limit for how many from one township can serve on the Kaneland school board.”

Witt said with Kaneland being a large district of 149 square miles covering nine townships in Kane County and a small area in DeKalb County, it is important that no more than three school board members can be from any one township.

“This prevents a quorum from any one township that would have the interests of Sugar Grove over Elburn to dominate the board,” Witt said. “We want a sampling from many townships.”

Witt said she did not think there would be repercussions from voters if the three are removed from the ballot.

“It’s nerve-wracking to fill out the paperwork to run for election. It can be very stressful dotting all the I’s and crossing all the T’s,” Witt said. “The majority of people go through that due diligence and come up with the right forms. It does not seem right that three people would turn in wrong stuff and still be considered for election without having done all they have to do.”

The others running for the Kaneland board are Ryan Kerry of Elburn and Pamela Voorhees of Maple Park.

Elburn gym participates in worldwide group workout

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Muscles were pumping and sweat was flying Saturday at Pound 4 Pound Fitness in Elburn as the gym participated in an effort to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous group workout.

The effort was being sponsored by ViSalus, a health and fitness company. For every person who participates, ViSalus will donate 30 meals to children in need through its charity, Project 10 Kids, said Danny DeKing, co-owner of the fitness center with Ryan Darby.

“We’re going for a Guiness World Record for the largest simultaneous group workout,” DeKing said. “It’s worldwide at 2,000 different locations.”

Everyone who signed in during that hour Saturday got to work out for free, and each signature on the sign-in sheet meant 30 meals for a child struggling with malnutrition, DeKing said.

Their participation is an opportunity not only to raise awareness about proper nutrition for children, exercise and fitness, DeKing said, but to draw attention to adult obesity challenges in the U.S. His father, Chet DeKing, 57, of Sugar Grove participated because he wanted to be part of the effort to get nourishing food to hungry children.

Others working out Saturday included best friends Dylan Nauert and Jaumaureo Phillips, both 18, of Sugar Grove. The former Kaneland Knights football players now playing football for their universities, Nauert for St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and Phillips for Aurora University.

“I want to support the cause and support the kids,” Phillips said.

“I want to support the cause,” Nauert said, “and feed the children.”

Deborah Drallmeier, 20, of Geneva was doing a punishing abdominal workout on a slant board. Every time she came up, Anthony McCoy, 22, of DeKalb would throw her a ball.

Drallmeier said she would do four sets of 20.

McCoy said he works as a promoter for the company sponsoring the worldwide workout.

Drallmeier said she started working out intensely about a year ago to prepare for boot camp when she joins the Air Force.

“I think this will make boot camp a little easier,” Drallmeier said.

Kindergarten preview sessions set

Parents of incoming kindergarten students are encouraged to have their children participate in a session at their future school.

To be eligible for kindergarten enrollment for the 2015-16 school year, children must be at least 5 years of age on, or before, Sept. 1.

The kindergarten preview is a one-hour session, during which prospective kindergartners participate in activities as a small group while being observed by teachers and parents. During this time, the child’s fine motor, cognitive, speech and language skills are

observed.

The news release urged parents or guardians to attend a preview session with their child at the school within

their current school boundary. However, preview sessions at other participating schools may be available to families with scheduling conflicts. Final session times will be determined by overall responses, the release stated.

Attendees will begin the registration process at the preview and should bring their child’s original county birth certificate, as well as proof of residency, including a real estate tax bill, signed lease or closing agreement/ mortgage. Also, they should bring two items with name and address, such as driver’s license with current address, voter registration card or a utility bill.

Parents should contact their child’s school as soon as possible if they are unable to attend any sessions March 13.

ST. CHARLES – Dave Rosenberg of St. Charles and his young daughters, Ava, 10, and Abigail, 10, have been disappointed that this winter season hasn’t produced much snow.

So after the inch or so of snow that fell on Kane County overnight, they were at Langum Park in St. Charles to take in some sledding fun Sunday.

“We were very anxious to get out,” Rosenberg said.

“We’re a little surprised there hasn’t been much snow this season.”

According to the National Weather Service, St. Charles received 1.3 inches of snow from the storm. Batavia received about 1 inch of snow and Geneva received 1.4 inches.

Even though the storm didn’t produce a lot of snow, it was good enough for Matt Wifler of West Chicago and his 6-year-old daughter, Elli “It’s pretty good for sledding,” Wifler said. “It’s enough to make it slippery.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – St. Charles North forward Jack Callaghan heaved a desperation shot from near midcourt as the first-quarter buzzer sounded Saturday.

Well, to be technical, it really was a horn blaring, and the distance for which Callaghan had to compensate wasn’t what he was used to, either.

“A little bit longer half-court shot, isn’t it?” North Stars assistant Rob Prentiss grinned, leaning toward Callaghan as the second quarter started.

Yup, playing at the United Center offered its share of adjustments, but North ultimately proved more adept in a 70-43 victory against Kaneland in a boys basketball matinee.

“In the first quarter, especially, it takes some time to get used to the

bigger surroundings,” Callaghan said.

“So you just have to keep your head up and keep playing basketball.”

North (9-6) overcame early struggles with finishing to shoot just shy of 50 percent in the first half, building a 36-17 lead at the break.

Jake Ludwig scored 15 points to lead three North Stars in double figures. Callaghan and Armon Osborne followed with 12 apiece.

Reserve guard Jake Marczuk paced the 5-8 Knights with nine points, finding his shooting touch well after North had dictated the pace of the nonconference game.

“St. Charles North is really good,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said.

“They have guys who know their roles and love their roles. They’re a really fantastic team.”

Tipping off a few hours before the arena’s more prominent hoops tenant,

the Bulls, entertained the Boston Celtics, the North Stars – officially the game’s hosts – and the Knights enjoyed a number of NBA creature comforts.

One of those struck even before the game officially began. The starting lineups were announced alongside the same musical accompaniment the Bulls use – the beginning of The Alan Parsons Project’s song “Sirius.”

Officials taped a high school 3-point line inside the professional arc, but that hardly stopped players from letting fly from longer distance, namely in the closing minutes and during an eight-minute, running-clock JV game that followed.

Someone – be it an athlete, reserve or fan – loyally shouted “NBA RANGE!” at each occurrence.

Early in the second quarter, Kaneland closed to within 20-14 on consec-

utive treys. The sequence seemed to spark the North Stars, who scrambled to cover the perimeter and the rest of the floor with added urgency.

“Our defense has been getting stronger, and that’s really been what is helping us over the past few weeks,” Ludwig said.

Ryan David scored six points for Kaneland, while Jake Gomes and Jacob Violett both chipped in five.

Both coaches emptied their benches by at least the beginning of the fourth quarter. The JV game allowed even more memories of playing in a big venue to sprout.

“To get everyone in and producing is always what you want to do,” North coach Tom Poulin said.

That thinking stands whether a half-court prayer comes from 42 feet or 47 feet. Callaghan’s shot, by the way, did not fall.

“He would do that every game as we were walking out that tunnel,” Tillman said.

“It was always cool to hear him say that because we would get fired up.”

Briggs did learn from Tillman in the toughest of times.

The hard-hitting linebacker learned the meaning of true strength when Tillman and his wife were dealing with their daughter’s heart condition in 2008.

“He was coming in and out of practice at that time,” Briggs said. “It was heavy on his heart. Visiting him in the hospital and seeing his wife in tears and at the point where you’re just kind of cried out, she didn’t have tears to cry.

“What I learned is how strong they are, how strong he is as a man and how much stronger they are for the situation. Those are the situations that define human

beings, the toughest situations.”

••• Briggs and Tillman aren’t done, despite spending the past two seasons dealing with injuries. This might be the final chapter of their Bears careers with their contracts expiring, but they want to keep playing.

“Charles should be remembered as the best cornerback to play for the Bears,” Briggs said. “There is no cornerback that has done the things that he’s done.”

And Briggs?

“Mike Singletary, Brian Urlacher, Dick Butkus,” Tillman said. “You can put him in that category of all the other greats.”

Spending the last four games together on the sideline, Briggs said he’d call out plays and Tillman would pick out routes. And they were right more often than not.

“I’m like, there’s no way we can stop playing this game right now,” Briggs said. “We know way too much. We understand way too much. I don’t see a reason why we have to stop playing this football game when you have too much offer.”

he Bears won, but linebacker Lance Briggs was heartbroken.

As riveting as the 28-20 victory against the 49ers was in Week 2, there were tears for cornerback Charles Tillman.

“I was hoping so much that the MRI the next day would come out negative,” Briggs told the Sun-Times.

But it didn’t.

Tillman had a ruptured tricep and was put on injured reserve. That Sept. 14 game could go down as the last game Briggs and Tillman play together.

It’s all part of an unceremonious end for two of the greatest Bears ever. On Nov. 28, Briggs joined Tillman on IR with a groin injury.

“Twelve years ago, we never thought that we’d start our first game together,” Tillman told the Sun-Times.

“It’s been a little silly that we’re both on IR and we ended the same way. It’s not how I planned on ending my career in Chicago.”

It’s an end of an era.

Tillman and Briggs, who were drafted in the second and third rounds, respectively, in 2003, are the longest-tenured current Bears.

“We didn’t bring the championship home to Chicago like we should have,” Briggs said. “But we have a lot of great memories.

“I feel a lot of Chicagoans will remember a lot of great games. It definitely is an end of an era. … But it was a great era in my mind.”

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Abby: I am a 25-year-old woman. My parents divorced when I was young. I kept in contact with my father until he dropped out of my life when I was around 11.

I came across Dad again on Facebook recently. He’s now in a domestic partnership with another man. It wasn’t a shock because Mom had told me some time ago she had suspected he was gay.

What upset me were several posts he made about wanting a happy family with his partner.

I know the family he made with Mom may not have been his ideal, but my sister and I ARE his family. I feel like we were tossed aside for this idea of a new family, which seems cold and callous. I haven’t mentioned it to my sister because I think she’d find it upsetting.

I want to confront Dad, but also think it might be best to just leave it alone.

Any advice? – Uncounted In California Dear Uncounted: I think you should contact your father, start a dialogue with him and ask why he dropped out of your life.

His reason may be that he was made to feel that his presence in your life was unwelcome, or a fear that you would not be able to accept his sexual orientation.

It seems strange to me that he would leave his daughters behind for no reason.

He may need to hear it from you before he can move forward and reconnect with you and your sister.

Dear Abby: I am engaged to the father of my son. We have been together for five years. He’s in a wheelchair and has been since he was a child. I love him very much and am ready to be his wife.

Every time I would tell my mother we planned to be married, she’d give me a thousand reasons why marrying the man I love would be stupid. We are now at a point in our lives where we are financially stable and are finally ready. When I told Mom, she called me selfish and said she won’t be there. I am heartbroken.

Am I a horrible person for marrying the man I love despite the fact that my family can’t accept his disability?

They keep asking if I understand the responsibility that comes with being with a person in a wheelchair. I know I can’t change other people’s minds, but do people really think it’s bad for a walking person to marry a person in a wheelchair? – Engaged In Michigan Dear Engaged: You’re not a “horrible person,” and yes, some people do harbor this prejudice.

You appear to be a young woman with her head on straight, and I hope you won’t allow your mother’s refusal to attend your wedding to stand in the way of your happiness.

While there are some things people in wheelchairs can’t do, there are many things at which they excel.

Many people with disabilities earn a comfortable living using the muscle between their ears in careers such as law, counseling, teaching, Internet technology and more, and some have become fine craftsmen because of their manual dexterity.

Perhaps if your family were to concentrate less on what your fiance can’t do and more on the things he can, they’d be more accepting.

At the end of last week, I described a couple of deals featuring junior players, for which the age limit is 26 at the moment. In November, I watched a game including Sam Hanser of Saint Louis, who is only 13 years old. In this deal, Hanser handled the ending nicely, overcoming the bad trump break.

Given the adverse vulnerability and the unimpressive long suit, opening two spades was sensible.

West led a low diamond. Hanser ruffed East’s 10 and led his club six. Although second hand low is right most of the time, here South was marked with some club length, given his diamond void. So West should have won with her ace, but she ducked.

After winning with dummy’s king, declarer (not best) played another club. East should have discarded a heart, but she threw a diamond. West won with her ace and gave her partner a club ruff.

East now pushed through a trump, South’s nine losing to West’s king.

South ruffed West’s diamond exit and led a low trump, getting the bad news. But declarer ruffed the next diamond and played a heart to dummy’s queen, bringing everyone down to four cards.

Dummy had the ace-seven of hearts and two high clubs. East held the ace-jack of spades and two diamonds. South retained the queen-eight of spades and king-five of hearts.

Declarer led a winning club.

If East had ruffed low, South would have overruffed and played winners. When East discarded on dummy’s last two clubs, at trick 12 declarer led a heart through East’s ace-jack of spades toward his queeneight. South lost only four spades and one club.
